Metallic Pd has been proved highly promising when paired with Cu for industrially important acetylene semi-hydrogenation. Herein, we demonstrate that high-surface-area siloxene can feasibly enable alloying between Pd and Cu via room-temperature reduction with Si-H bonds. Unprecedentedly small Cu nanoparticles with isolated Pd were in situ loaded on siloxene, addressing the core problem of low selectivity of Pd and low activity of Cu. This devised structure outclassed the traditional impregnated SiO 2 in every aspect of the catalytic performance for the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene under industry conditions, with a 91% acetylene conversion and an impressive 93% selectivity to ethylene at 200 °C, and showed long-term stability with negligible activity decay at this harsh temperature. This work provides new insights for the design of economic bimetallic loaded catalysts for balancing the activity-selectivity dilemma, demonstrating the viability of siloxene as both a synthetic reagent and a carrier material for efficient catalysis.

This study explores the synthesis, structural characterization, and host-guest interactions of heteroatom bridged nanobelts, focusing on a cyclothianthrene nanobelt and a fused nanobelt incorporating thianthrene and phenoxathiin. Utilizing a cyclization-followed-by-bridging synthetic approach, both molecular belts were successfully synthesized, and their structures confirmed through NMR and MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. Crystallographic studies revealed that the cyclothianthrene nanobelt adopts an octagonal column-like conformation, while the hybrid belt forms an oval tub-shaped shape, both exhibiting distinct assembly motifs. The host-guest chemistry of these nanobelts was investigated with fullerenes (C 60 , C 70 , and PC 61 BM). The cyclothianthrene belt showed no interaction with these fullerenes, whereas the other belt demonstrated adaptive binding capabilities, forming stable complexes with C 60 and C 70 through π-π interactions and C-H⋅⋅⋅S hydrogen bonds. The binding constants indicated that the hybrid belt has a stronger affinity for C 70 due to better size complementarity. Additionally, its interaction with PC 61 BM showcased a specific 1 : 1 binding mode despite exhibiting a smaller binding constant. Improving the solar-to-thermal energy conversion efficiency of photothermal nanomaterials at no expense of other physicochemical properties, e.g., the catalytic reactivity of metal nanoparticles, is highly desired for diverse applications but remains a big challenge. Herein, a synergistic strategy is developed for enhanced photothermal conversion by a greenhouse-like plasmonic superstructure of 4 nm cobalt nanoparticles while maintaining their intrinsic catalytic reactivity. The silica shell plays a key role in retaining the plasmonic superstructures for efficient use of the full solar spectrum, and reducing the heat loss of cobalt nanoparticles via the nano-greenhouse effect. The optimized plasmonic superstructure catalyst exhibits supra-photothermal CO 2 methanation performance with a record-high rate of 2.3 mol g Co -1 h -1 , close to 100% CH 4 selectivity, and desirable catalytic stability. Background: Atelectasis is a commonly observed postoperative complication of general anesthesia in children. Pulmonary protective ventilation strategies have been reported to have a beneficial effect on postoperative atelectasis in children. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block technique in preventing the incidence of postoperative atelectasis in children., Materials and Methods: This study enrolled 100 consecutive children undergoing elective laparoscopic bilateral hernia repair and randomly divided them into the control and TAP groups. Conventional lung-protective ventilation was initiated in both groups after the induction of general anesthesia. The children in the TAP group received an ultrasound-guided TAP block with 0.3 mL/kg of 0.5% ropivacaine after the induction of anesthesia., Results: Anesthesia-induced atelectasis was observed in 24% and 84% of patients in the TAP (n = 50) and control (n = 50) groups, respectively, before discharge from the post-anesthetic care unit (T3; PACU) (odds ratio [OR], 0.062; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.019-0.179; P < 0.001). No significant difference was observed between the control and TAP groups in terms of the lung ultrasonography (LUS) scores 5 min after endotracheal intubation (T1). However, the LUS scores were lower in the TAP group than those in the control group at the end of surgery (T2, P < 0.01) and before discharge from the PACU (T3, P < 0.001). Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) is a promising technique for producing propene due to its low operative temperature and coke-resistant feature. Recently, boron-based catalysts have been widely investigated for ODHP owing to their brilliant performance. Herein, we report that boron in the form of nanosheets can be prepared feasibly by exfoliating layered MgB 2 with hydrochloric acid, and can efficiently and stably catalyze ODHP. At 530 °C, the catalyst exhibits propene and ethene selectivities as high as 63.5% and 18.4%, respectively, at a 40% propane conversion. The olefin productivity reaches 2.48 g olefin g cat -1 h -1 , superior to the commercial h-BN and other reported boron-based catalysts. Even after testing for 100 h at 530 °C, the catalyst still maintains excellent stability. This work expands the effective boron-based catalyst family for ODHP and demonstrates the great potential of the new type of 2D material-boron nanosheet for energy and catalytic applications.

Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) is a promising process for producing propene. Recently, some boron-based catalysts have exhibited excellent olefin selectivity in ODHP. However, their complex synthetic routes and poor stability under high-temperature reaction conditions have hindered their practical application. Herein, we report a self-evolution method rather than conventional assembly approaches to acquire structures with excellent stability under a high propane conversion, from a single precursor-MgB 2 . The catalyst feasibly prepared and optimized exhibited a striking performance: 60% propane conversion with a 43.2% olefin yield at 535°C. The BO x corona pinned by the strong interaction with the borate enabled zero loss of the high conversion (around 40%) and olefins selectivity (above 80%) for over 100 h at 520°C. To overcome the thermodynamic and kinetic impediments of the Sabatier CO 2 methanation reaction, the process must be operated under very high temperature and pressure conditions, to obtain an industrially viable conversion, rate, and selectivity. Herein, we report that these technologically relevant performance metrics have been achieved under much milder conditions using solar rather than thermal energy, where the methanation reaction is enabled by a novel nickel-boron nitride catalyst. In this regard, an in situ generated HOB⋅⋅⋅B surface frustrated Lewis's pair is considered responsible for the high Sabatier conversion 87.68 %, reaction rate 2.03 mol g Ni -1 h -1 , and near 100 % selectivity, realized under ambient pressure conditions. Driving metal-cluster-catalyzed high-temperature chemical reactions by sunlight holds promise for the development of negative-carbon-footprint industrial catalysis, which has yet often been hindered by the poor ability of metal clusters to harvest and utilize the full spectrum of solar energy. Here, we report the preparation of Mo 2 TiC 2 MXene-supported Ru clusters (Ru/Mo 2 TiC 2 ) with pronounced broadband sunlight absorption ability and high sintering resistance. Under illumination of focused sunlight, Ru/Mo 2 TiC 2 can catalyze the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction to produce carbon monoxide from the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen with enhanced activity, selectivity, and stability compared to their nanoparticle counterparts. Notably, the CO production rate of MXene-supported Ru clusters reached 4.0 mol·g Ru -1 ·h -1 , which is among the best reported so far for photothermal RWGS catalysts. Detailed studies suggest that the production of methane is kinetically inhibited by the rapid desorption of CO from the surface of the Ru clusters.

Catalysis based on two-dimensional silicon has been under intense investigation recently. However, its substandard catalytic activity is far from industrialization. In this work, we demonstrate a new solution to this problem formulated on the batch synthesis of siloxene with an enhanced specific surface area (217.8 m 2 g -1 ). A two-dimensional porous structure was prepared, enabling great support and dispersion of metal nanoparticles. Catalytic evaluations of such hybrid structures for the (photo)thermal CO 2 hydrogenation reaction and the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction revealed a significant performance advantage over the benchmark two-dimensional silicon structures synthesized via the conventional method. This work may confer notable viability on two-dimensional silicon for advanced energy, catalytic, and environmental applications.

Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) is a major environmental pathogen causing coliform mastitis, characterized by cell death and mammary tissue damage. Our previous study has shown the antimicrobial effect of Zophobas morio ( Z. morio ) hemolymph against mastitis pathogens. In this study, we established E. coli -induced cellular and animal models for mastitis, aiming to evaluate the protective effect of Z. morio hemolymph against E. coli -induced mastitis in vivo and in vitro. In mice with E. coli , Z. morio hemolymph attenuated bacterial burden and histopathological impairment, reduced the production of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-18, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and the ratio of CD4 + T/CD8 + T, and increased the production of IL-2 triggered by E. coli . Z. morio hemolymph also enhanced the integrity of the blood-milk barrier in E. coli -induced mastitis. In E. coli -stimulated porcine mammary epithelial cells, Z. morio hemolymph inhibited E. coli -induced inflammatory responses and upregulated tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Claudin-3 and Occludin). Moreover, we found that the anti-inflammatory effect of Z. morio hemolymph was mediated by inhibiting E. coli -induced NLRP3 inflammasome assembly, Caspase-1 activation, and reversing the inhibitory effect of E. coli on autophagy. Besides, Z. morio hemolymph augmented ATG5/ATG16L1-mediated autophagy activation, negatively regulated NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Our results reveal that Z. morio hemolymph alleviates E. coli -induced mastitis via lessening the inflammatory response by regulating the NLRP3 and ATG5/ATG16L1 signaling pathway, as well as repairing the blood-milk barrier.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an important animal pathogen and has a negative economic impact on cattle industries worldwide. In this study, the BVDV strain named BJ175170 was detected, isolated, and identified from cattle in Beijing, China, during herd screening by BVDV antigen-ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). To investigate its genomic features, the characteristic 5'UTR region of the isolates were sequenced and BLAST analyzed. BVDV BJ175170 belongs to the BVDV-1c subtype, which differs from the Beijing prevalent BVDV strains. The BVDV particles were further observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). To evaluate the virulence of the BVDV BJ175170, the BVDV seronegative rabbits were intraperitoneally inoculated with the virus suspension. Blood samples were analyzed for changes in leukocyte number and antibody titer, and tissue samples were taken for histopathology analysis. These data confirmed again that rabbits could act as the reservoir of BVDV, which poses a small but non-zero risk of re-infection for BVDV-free cattle herds. To our knowledge, this is the first report of pathological changes in rabbits after exposure to BVDV-1c subtype, which could act as experimental reference. Treating hazardous waste Ni from the electroplating industry is mandated world-wide, is exceptionally expensive, and carries a very high CO 2 footprint. Rather than regarding Ni as a disposable waste, the chemicals and petrochemicals industries could instead consider it a huge resource. In the work described herein, we present a strategy for upcycling waste Ni from electroplating wastewater into a photothermal catalyst for converting CO 2 to CO. Specifically, magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated in amine functionalized porous SiO 2 , is demonstrated to efficiently scavenge Ni from electroplating wastewater for utilization in photothermal CO 2 catalysis. The core-shell catalyst architecture produces CO at a rate of 1.9 mol·g Ni -1 ·h -1 (44.1 mmol·g cat -1 ·h -1 ), a selectivity close to 100%, and notable long-term stability. Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a critical animal pathogen that leads to cattle production losses associated with acute disease, immune dysregulation, reproductive failure, and respiratory disease. Due to the monotonous control technique and neglect of BVDV, increasing prevalence of BVDV has caused significant economic losses in the cattle industry worldwide. Therefore, novel anti-BVDV drugs are essential to prevent and control BVDV. Our previous studies have found that Forsythoside A (FTA) could inhibit the replication of BVDV via TRAF2-dependent CD28-4-1BB signaling in bovine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), but whether they can directly inhibit the BVDV remains unclear. Here, we further investigated the effects of FTA on BVDV and its underlying mechanisms of action. We found that FTA significantly inhibited the replication of BVDV in the MDBK cell directly. The results demonstrated that FTA could reduce the functional activation of Caspase-1 to inhibit the inflammatory response caused by BVDV infection and increase the expression of type I interferon (IFN-I) to clear the virus in vitro. The animal experiment was performed to evaluate the antiviral effect of FTA in vivo. Notably, after challenged with BVDV, mice with FTA + E rns -E2 protein displayed alleviated pathological damage and decreased the viral load in the spleen compared with mice inoculated with E rns -E2 protein. Furthermore, treatment with FTA enhanced body defense and delayed infection by the BVDV. Our results reveal that FTA suppresses BVDV replication both in vitro and in vivo and therefore shows promise as an anti-BVDV agent.

Increasing welding speed can promote the productivity of laser welding. However, humping defects often occur, which limits the application of this strategy. The existing explanations for the humping formation remain vague, and mitigation and suppression methods are limited. In this research, high-speed imaging experiments and numerical simulation of the high-speed laser welding process are performed. Through careful examination, the humping phenomenon is explained. At high welding speed, the high-speed melt flow caused by recoil pressure is hindered by the solidified region in the melt pool, leading to the occurrence of a swelling. The swelling then grows, forming a valley in front of the swelling under the effect of surface tension. The solidification of the valley results in the occurrence of a second swelling. This process repeats and humping defect forms. Marangoni force and viscous force also have influence on this process. In addition, it is found that adding a Tungsten Inert Gas arc behind the laser beam can effectively suppress the humping.

Cu-based catalysts exhibit excellent performance in hydrogenation reactions. However, the poor stability of Cu catalysts under high temperatures has restricted their practical applications. The preparation of stable Cu catalysts supported by SiO 2 with strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has thus aroused great interest due to the high abundance, low toxicity, feasible processability, and low cost of SiO 2 . The challenge in the construction of such SMSI remains to be the inertness of SiO 2 . Herein, a simple and scalable method is developed to prepare 2D silica (2DSiO 2 ) supported Cu catalysts with SMSI by carefully manipulating the topological exfoliation of CaSi 2 with CuCl 2 and thereafter calcination. The prepared Cu-2DSiO 2 catalysts with the unique encapsulated Cu nanoparticles exhibit excellent activity and long-term stability in high-temperature CO 2 hydrogenation reactions. Spermatogonia are the source of spermatogenic waves. Abnormal spermatogonia can cause ab-normal spermatogenic waves, which manifest as spermatogenic disorders such as oligospermia, hypospermia, and azoospermia. Among them, the self-renewal of spermatogonia serves as the basis for maintaining the process of spermatogenesis, and the closely regulated balance between self-renewal and differentiation of spermatogonia can maintain the continuous production of spermatozoa. Tet methylcytosine dioxygenase 1(TET1) is an important epitope modifying enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC), thereby causing the methylation of specific genes site hydroxylation, enabling the DNA de-methylation process, and regulating gene expression. However, the hydroxymethylation sites at which TET1 acts specifically and the mechanisms of interaction affecting key differential genes are not clear. In the present study, we provide evidence that the expression of PLZF, a marker gene for spermatogonia self-renewal, was significantly elevated in the TET1 overexpression group, while the expression of PCNA, a proliferation-related marker gene, was also elevated at the mRNA level. Significant differential expression of SP1 was found by sequencing. SP1 expression was increased at both mRNA level and protein level after TET1 overexpression, while differential gene DAXX expression was downregulated at protein level, while the expression of its reciprocal protein P53 was upregulated. In conclusion, our results suggest that TET1 overexpression causes changes in the expression of SP1, DAXX and other genes, and that there is a certain antagonistic effect between SP1 and DAXX, which eventually reaches a dynamic balance to maintain the self-renewal state of spermatogonia for sustained sperm production. Transformation of CO 2 into value-added products via photothermal catalysis has become an increasingly popular route to help ameliorate the energy and environmental crisis derived from the continuing use of fossil fuels, as it can integrate light into well-established thermocatalysis processes. The question however remains whether negative CO 2 emission could be achieved through photothermal catalytic reactions performed in facilities driven by electricity mainly derived from fossil energy. Herein, we propose universal equations that describe net CO 2 emissions generated from operating thermocatalysis and photothermal reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) and Sabatier processes for batch and flow reactors. With these reactions as archetype model systems, the factors that will determine the final amount of effluent CO 2 can be determined. Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes a severe threat to the cattle industry due to ineffective control measures. Gypenoside is the primary component of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, which has potential medicinal value and has been widely applied as a food additive and herbal supplement. However, little is known about the antiviral effects of gypenoside. The present study aimed to explore the antiviral activities of gypenoside against BVDV infection. The inhibitory activity of gypenoside against BVDV was assessed by using virus titration and performing Western blotting, quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR), and immunofluorescence assays in MDBK cells. We found that gypenoside exhibited high anti-BVDV activity by interfering with the viral attachment to and internalization in cells. The study showed that BVDV infection inhibits apoptosis of infected cells from escaping the innate defense of host cells. Our data further demonstrated that gypenoside inhibited BVDV infection by electively activating the apoptosis of BVDV-infected cells for execution, as evidenced by the regulation of the expression of the apoptosis-related protein, promotion of caspase-3 activation, and display of positive TUNEL staining; no toxicity was observed in non-infected cells. Collectively, the data identified that gypenoside exerts an anti-BVDV-infection role by inhibiting viral attachment and internalization and selectively purging virally infected cells. Therefore, our study will contribute to the development of a novel prophylactic and therapeutic strategy against BVDV infection.

Cyclothianthrenes, a series of sulphur-embedded hydrocarbon belts proposed a decade ago, were successfully constructed through a stepwise bottom-up synthesis. The belt [6]cyclothianthrene ([6]CT) is the smallest and most strained member of the family yet reported. Both [6]CT and [8]CT are the first examples of cyclothianthrene characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. An unprecedented chiral belt [7]CT and a Möbius-shaped [9]CT were also achieved via modular synthesis. Crystallographic and computational studies show that belts [6]CT-[8]CT have prism-like conformations with well-defined tubular cavities which have potential for guest molecule inclusion. Cyclic voltammograms further revealed that these belts are redox-active. The conversion of CO 2 into fuels and feedstock chemicals via photothermal catalysis holds promise for efficient solar energy utilization to tackle the global energy shortage and climate change. Despite recent advances, it is of emerging interest to explore promising materials with excellent photothermal properties to boost the performance of photothermal CO 2 catalysis. Here, we report the discovery of MXene materials as superior photothermal supports for metal nanoparticles. As a proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate that Nb 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 , two typical MXene materials, can enhance the photothermal effect and thus boost the photothermal catalytic activity of Ni nanoparticles. A record CO 2 conversion rate of 8.50 mol·g Ni -1 ·h -1 is achieved for Nb 2 C-nanosheet-supported Ni nanoparticles under intense illumination. Our study bridges the gap between photothermal MXene materials and photothermal CO 2 catalysis toward more efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversions and stimulates the interest in MXene-supported metal nanoparticles for other heterogeneous catalytic reactions, particularly driven by sunlight.

Coliforms and Staphylococcus spp. infections are the leading causes of bovine mastitis. Despite extensive research and development in antibiotics, they have remained inadequately effective in treating bovine mastitis induced by multiple pathogen infection. In the present study, we showed the protective effect of Zophobas morio ( Z. morio ) hemolymph on bovine mammary epithelial cells against bacterial infection. Z. morio hemolymph directly kills both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria through membrane permeation and prevents the adhesion of E. coli or the clinically isolated S. simulans strain to bovine mammary epithelial (MAC-T) cells. In addition, Z. morio hemolymph downregulates the expression of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor family member pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), caspase-1, and NLRP6, as well as inhibits the secretion of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-18, which attenuates E. coli or S. simulans -induced pyroptosis. Overall, our results suggest the potential role of Z. morio hemolymph as a novel therapeutic candidate for bovine mastitis.

Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli is the causative agent of diarrhea in infants and animals worldwide. Many isolated strains recovered from pigs with postweaning diarrhea are multidrug resistance (MDR), and hybrids of E. coli are potentially more virulent, as enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC)/Shiga-toxigenic E. coli (STEC) hybrids. Here, we used whole-genome sequencing to analyze clinical isolates of the five colistin-resistant E. coli . The E. coli CAU15104, CAU15134, and CAU16060 belonged to ETEC/STEC hybrids, displaying the same serotype O3:H45 and sequence type ST4214. The E. coli CAU16175 and CAU16177 belonged to atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (aEPEC), display O4:H11 and O103:H2, ST29, and ST20, respectively. The E. coli CAU16175 carries six plasmids. An IncHI2-type plasmid, pCAU16175&#95;1, harbors an IS 26 -enriched MDR region, which includes 16 antimicrobial-resistant genes. An IncFII-type plasmid, pCAU16175&#95;3, harbors mcr-1.1, tet (M), and bla TEM-1B , whereas mcr-1.1 is located within a Tn 2 derivative. Our findings indicate that the ETEC/STEC strains of the O3:H45 serotype as well as the aEPEC strains of the O4:H11 and O103:H2 serotypes are associated with postweaning diarrhea in swine and that some of diarrheagenic E. coli contains IS 26 -enriched MDR region and the mcr-1 gene located within a Tn 2 derivative on IncFII plasmid., (Copyright © 2020 Guo, Wang, Wang, Su, Wang and Zhu.)

Hoop-shaped or belt-like molecules have been fascinating not only due to their challenging synthesis, but also unique physical and chemical properties. The incorporation of heteroatoms (N, O, S, etc.) into these belts could alter both molecular structures and electronic properties which will lead to versatile applications, from advanced host-guest systems to functional materials. Despite numerous computational studies, the synthesis and characterization of heteroatom-bridged double-stranded molecular belts remains scarce. Here we report the synthesis, crystal structure, and host-guest chemistry of two novel heteroatom-bridged belt-like macrocycles composed of phenoxathiin. The bowl-shaped belt demonstrates a strong binding affinity (K a  = 3.6 × 10 9  M ‒2 ) towards fullerene C 60 and forms a 2:1 capsule-like complex with the aid of C‒H···S hydrogen bonds. The column-like belt can bind the cyclic guest [2,2]paracyclophane to form a ring-in-ring complex. The modular synthesis, structural specificity, and diverse host-guest chemistry of cyclophenoxathiins markedly expands the known chemistry of molecular belts.

Hemolysin-coregulated protein (Hcp) of Salmonella enteritidis is known to be a structural and effector protein of the T6SS, but little is known about the role of Hcp in host cells. In this study, Hcp was expressed by plasmid pEGFP-N1-hcp in BHK-21 cells and the results showed that the subcellular localization of Hcp was predominantly in the cytoplasm of BHK-21 cells. When Hcp was over-expressed by transfecting plasmid pCI-neo-hcp in BHK-21 cells and mRNA sequencing was performed to analyze differentially expressed genes, the results showed a change in the expression levels of 307 mRNAs (fold change > 2, and p  < 0.01). Amongst these, 125 mRNAs were up-regulated and 182 mRNAs were down-regulated. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis showed that differentially expressed genes were enriched in tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling pathway, IL-17 signaling pathway, and cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction. Subsequently, we selected differentially expressed genes of TNF signaling pathway and verified the changes by real-time PCR. The results were consistent with the trend observed for the sequencing results. The efficiency of heterogeneous photocatalysis for converting solar to chemical energy is low on a per photon basis mainly because of the difficulty of capturing and utilizing light across the entire solar spectral wavelength range. This challenge is addressed herein with a plasmonic superstructure, fashioned as an array of nanoscale needles comprising cobalt nanocrystals assembled within a sheath of porous silica grown on a fluorine tin oxide substrate. This plasmonic superstructure can strongly absorb sunlight through different mechanisms including enhanced plasmonic excitation by the hybridization of Co nanoparticles in close proximity, as well as inter- and intra-band transitions. With nearly 100% sunlight harvesting ability, it drives the photothermal hydrogenation of carbon dioxide with a 20-fold rate increase from the silica-supported cobalt catalyst. As an analogue to the vapor-liquid-solid process, the solution-liquid-solid (SLS) method offers a mild solution-phase route to colloidal 1D nanostructures with controlled sizes, compositions, and properties. However, direct growth of 1D nanostructure arrays through SLS processes remains in its infancy. Herein, this study shows that SLS processes are also suitable for the growth of nanorod arrays on the substrate. As a proof of concept, seedless growth of silica nanorod arrays on a variety of hydrophilic substrates such as pristine and oxide-modified glass, metal sheets, Si wafers, and biaxially oriented polypropylene film are demonstrated. Also, the silica nanorod arrays can be used as a new platform for the fabrication of catalysts for photothermal CO 2 hydrogenation and the reduction of 4-nitrophenol reactions. To obtain an effective vaccine candidate against bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) disease which causes great economical loss in cattle industries, recombinant E rns -E2 protein vaccine containing MF59 and CPG-ODN adjuvants was prepared and assessed in this study. The recombinant plasmid (pET32a-E rns -E2) was constructed and transformed into BL21 (DE3) cells to produce E rns -E2 protein. We immunized mice with the MF59-and CPG-ODN-adjuvanted recombinant E rns -E2 protein, E2 protein, or E rns protein, respectively. To evaluate immunogenicity and efficacy of a vaccine-adjuvant combination, mice were challenged with BVDV BJ175170 strain after immunization. All adjuvanted vaccines elicited detectable humoral and cellular immune responses, the BVDV-specific antibody titers as well as interleukin 4 (IL-4) levels in sera of mice immunized with the recombinant E rns -E2 protein were higher than in those of mice immunized with either the recombinant E rns or E2 protein. Besides, immunization with the E rns -E2 vaccines induced higher percentage of CD4 + IFN-γ + , CD8 + IFN-γ + T cells and CD3 + TNF-α + T cells compared with the other vaccines. More protective efficacy against BVDV infection was acquired in the mice treated with the recombinant E rns -E2 protein, as shown by a reduction of viremia and slight pathological changes compared with both the control mice and the other vaccinated mice. The effective removal and recovery of phosphorus from aquatic environments are highly important for successful eutrophication control and phosphorus recycling. Herein, we prepared biochar containing MgO nanoparticles (MgO-biochar) by fast pyrolysis of MgCl 2 -impregnated corn stalks, probed its phosphate adsorption performance. Through the fast pyrolysis, the MgCl 2 promoted the formation of micropores and mesoporous, and decomposed into MgO nanoparticles with the size smaller than 100 nm. The adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption property increased with the increase of Mg content, and had a strong correlation with the external surface area. And the phosphate adsorption was well described by the Langmuir-Freundlich model (maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 60.95 mg P/g). Kinetic analysis and characterization analysis of MgO-biochar for different adsorption time indicated that phosphate adsorption onto MgO-biochar was mainly controlled by rapid binding to the external surface (about 75% of the equilibrium adsorption amount), and the uptake rate was limited by the slow diffusion of phosphate into the biochar interior (about 25% of the equilibrium adsorption amount). The results suggested that the synthesized MgO-biochar with enough MgO active site dispersed on a higher external surface can be used as a potential adsorbent for phosphate removal and recovery from aqueous solution., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe 3 O 4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu 2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO 2 outside Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 . The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.

In this study, a novel oral vaccine of recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum ( L. plantarum ) containing the gp85 protein was explored, and the effects of this vaccine on the prevention of subgroup J Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV-J) infection were assessed. In the current study, the gp85 protein of ALV-J was expressed on the surface of L. plantarum with the surface-display motif, pgsA , by constructing a shuttle vector pMG36e:pgsA:gp85 . Surface localization of the fusion protein was verified by western blotting and flow cytometry. Subsequently, Specific Pathogen Free Hy-Line Brown layer chickens were orally vaccinated with the recombinant L. plantarum and presented with high levels of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) titers in bile and duodenal-mucosal fluid. After challenged with ALV-J of a 3 × 10 3 50% tissue culture infective dose (TCID50), serum samples of the chickens were collected and viremia was analyzed. Results showed that, compared to the L. plantarum and PBS control group, the recombinant L. plantarum group showed a significant rise in antibody levels after inoculation, and provide improved protection against ALV-J according to viremia detection. Rationale: Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic infection caused by sporothrix schenckii complex. The misdiagnosis rate of sporotrichosis is very high. Fungal microscopic examination and timely culture help us make an accurate diagnosis and treatment. We observed that combined treatments are more effective than monotherapy in treatment of sporotrichosis., Patient Concerns: A 47-year-old female complained of pustules and scabs on her nose tip that lasted for 1 month at our hospital. She was diagnosed with skin infection and treated with antibiotics for 20 days. Nonetheless, the treatment did not result in any improvement with the lesion., Diagnoses: The results on bacterial culture, sensitive test, special stains, and multiple acid-fast cultures were negative. Finally, fungi were observed by KOH. Finally, fungal hyphae were observed by KOH and by fluorescent staining. Taupe filamentous colonies of sporothrix-like species appeared by fungal culture. The diagnosis of sporotrichosis was finally confirmed based on the lesion characteristics and the results of laboratory examination., Interventions: The lesions did not alleviate with Itraconazole oral administration for 1 month. Then we treated the patient with the combination therapy of itraconazole (ITR) and terbinafine. At the same time, the compound glycyrrhizin tablet was used for liver protection., Outcomes: The patient was free of clinical symptoms of sporotrichosis following the treatment and did not have complications during an 8-month follow-up., Lessons: We should always be alert to sporotrichosis although it is not a very common disease. It is important to adapt fungi microscopic analysis and culture for an accurate diagnosis. ITR is the first choice for sporotrichosis. However, combination treatment is more effective for stubborn cases.

Stimuli-responsive smart optical materials hold great promise for applications in active optics, display, sensing, energy conversion, military camouflage, and artificial intelligence. However, their applications are greatly restricted by the difficulty of tuning different optical properties within the same material, especially by a single stimulus. Here, magnetic modulations of multiple optical properties are demonstrated in a crystalline colloidal array (CCA) of magnetic nanorods. Small-angle X-ray scattering studies reveal that these nanorods form an unusual monoclinic crystal in concentrated suspensions. The CCA exhibits optical anisotropy in the form of a photonic bandgap and birefringence, thus enabling magnetic tuning of the structural color and transmittance at a rate of 50 Hz. As a proof-of-concept, it is further demonstrated that the fabrication of a multifunctional device for display, anticounterfeiting, and smart-window applications based on this multiple magneto-optical effect. We present a systematic study on the ionic permeability and protective ability of silica shells with different aging degrees by using the acid etching of silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles as the model reaction. Contradictory to common impressions, we found that the ionic permeability of silica shells increased rather than decreased with the increasing aging degree. This trend may be explained by the chemical nature of the sol-gel silica shell that affects the wettability and, thereby, the transportation of water molecules and hydrated ions. Our study provides novel insights into the protective ability of sol-gel derived silica, which enables us to design thin but low-permeability shells for the stability of inner nanoparticles under harsh conditions without scarifying the performance of core-shell nanostructures., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Fingerprinting-based Wi-Fi indoor positioning has great potential for positioning in GPS-denied areas. However, establishing a fingerprinting map (also called a radio map) prior to positioning (site survey) is normally a labor-intensive task. This paper proposes a method for easy site survey without need for any extra hardware. The user can conduct the site survey adopting only a smart phone. The collected inertial-based readings are processed using the pedestrian dead-reckoning algorithms to generate a raw trajectory. Then a factor graph optimization method is proposed to re-estimate the trajectory by adding constraints originated from collected Wi-Fi fingerprints and landmark positions. The proposed method is verified through an experiment in a mall. The mean positioning error is 1.10 m and the maximum error is 2.25 m. This level of positioning accuracy is considered sufficient for radio map generation purposes. A classical baseline algorithm, the k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) algorithm, is adopted to test the positioning performance of the radio map (RM), which also validates the quality of the constructed RM from the proposed method.

A target recognition method of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is proposed via matching attributed scattering centers (ASCs) to binary target regions. The ASCs extracted from the test image are predicted as binary regions. In detail, each ASC is first transformed to the image domain based on the ASC model. Afterwards, the resulting image is converted to a binary region segmented by a global threshold. All the predicted binary regions of individual ASCs from the test sample are mapped to the binary target regions of the corresponding templates. Then, the matched regions are evaluated by three scores which are combined as a similarity measure via the score-level fusion. In the classification stage, the target label of the test sample is determined according to the fused similarities. The proposed region matching method avoids the conventional ASC matching problem, which involves the assignment of ASC sets. In addition, the predicted regions are more robust than the point features. The Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition (MSTAR) dataset is used for performance evaluation in the experiments. According to the experimental results, the method in this study outperforms some traditional methods reported in the literature under several different operating conditions. Under the standard operating condition (SOC), the proposed method achieves very good performance, with an average recognition rate of 98.34%, which is higher than the traditional methods. Moreover, the robustness of the proposed method is also superior to the traditional methods under different extended operating conditions (EOCs), including configuration variants, large depression angle variation, noise contamination, and partial occlusion.

The aim of this study was to develop and test an optimal vaccination strategy against bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) based on the E2 glycoprotein of the BJ1305 strain. To achieve higher E2-specific antibody titers and to broaden the cellular immune response, a plasmid encoding the E2 protein (pcDNA3.1-E2) was constructed and a purified recombinant E2 protein was generated. The E2 protein was emulsified in the adjuvant ISA 61 VG prior to administration. We immunized mice three times with pcDNA3.1-E2 or the recombinant E2 protein or primed twice with pcDNA3.1-E2 and boosted once with the E2 protein. To evaluate the protection against BVDV conferred by the vaccines, the mice were challenged with BVDV strain Oregon C24V after the third immunization. Although all immunized mice developed humoral and cellular immune responses, the E2-specific antibody titers in the DNA prime-protein boost group were significantly higher than those elicited by either the DNA or the protein vaccine. In addition, vaccination with the E2 DNA vaccine induced higher percentages of CD4 + IFN-γ + T cells and CD8 + IFN-γ + T cells among total CD3 + T cells than the other regimens. The predominant antibody subclass in the vaccinated mice was IgG1. Serum tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels in the DNA prime-protein boost group were significantly higher after the third immunization than in the other groups. Moreover, the mice treated with the DNA prime-protein boost vaccination regimen acquired protection against BVDV challenge, as shown by a significant reduction of viremia, only minor pathological changes, and a lower viral antigen burden than in the control and solo vaccinated mice. These results demonstrate the potential advantage of a DNA prime-protein boost vaccination approach over a solo vaccination for the prevention of BVDV. Adult neurogenesis is important for the development of regenerative therapies for human diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) through the recruitment of adult neural stem cells (NSCs). NSCs are characterized by the capacity to generate neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. To identify key factors involved in manipulating the adult NSC neurogenic fate thus has crucial implications for the clinical application. Here, we report that BAF45D is expressed in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus, the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle, and the central canal (CC) of the adult spinal cord. Coexpression of BAF45D with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a radial glial like cell marker protein, was identified in the SGZ, the SVZ and the adult spinal cord CC. Quantitative analysis data indicate that BAF45D is preferentially expressed in the neurogenic zone of the LV and the neurons of the adult CNS. Furthermore, during the neuroectoderm differentiation of H9 cells, BAF45D is required for the expression of PAX6, a neuroectoderm determinant that is also known to regulate the self-renewal and neuronal fate specification of adult neural stem/progenitor cells. Together, our results may shed new light on the expression of BAF45D in the adult neurogenic zones and the contribution of BAF45D to early neural development.

Rad9 protein plays an important role in cell-cycle checkpoint signal transduction in human and yeast cells, but knowledge about Rad9 in plants is limited. This study reports that the Rad9 gene of rice can generate the transcript products OsRad9.1 and OsRad9.2 through alternative splicing. OsRad9.1, with all nine exons, is the main cell-cycle checkpoint protein involved in the response of rice to genotoxic stresses (ultraviolet radiation and antibiotic stress), environmental stresses (drought, salt, and heavy metal stress), and auxin stimuli (2,4-D, IAA, and IBA). Meanwhile, transcript isoform OsRad9.2, which lost exon7 and exon8, showed different preferential stimulation effects on these stresses and pollen development duration. These results might indicat that besides the monitoring and repair of DNA damage, Rad9 might involve in the development of pollen.

Selenium (Se) can play a protective role against heavy metal toxicity. This experiment aims to evaluate the effect of Se supplementation at different doses on the chicken brains. Oxidative stress was induced in the chicken brains by chromium(VI). A total of 105 Hyland brown male chickens were randomly divided into seven groups, including the control group, poisoned group [6%LD 50 K 2 Cr 2 O 7 body weight (B.W.)], and detoxification groups K 2 Cr 2 O 7 (6%LD 50 ) + Se (0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.50, and 5.00 Na 2 SeO 3 mg/kg B.W.) orally in water for 42 days. The chickens were detected by the activities of mitochondrial membrane potential, 2'-benzoyloxycinnamaldehyde, superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and Ca 2+ -ATPase. Cr(VI) administration caused histopathological damage. In addition, changes in oxidative stress indicators were observed in the chicken's brains. Se supplement increased the levels of GSH, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and Ca 2+ -ATPase and reduced MDA activity in the detoxification groups. However, the high-dose Se supplementation groups of 2.50 and 5.00 mg/kg reduced the activities of GSH, MMP, and Ca 2+ -ATPase; increased the brain-body ratio; and increased SOD activity. In conclusion, Cr(VI) exposure caused oxidative stress. Se exerted a remission effect on toxic responses in the chicken brains. However, a high Se concentration was synergistic to the toxic effect of Cr(VI).

In our research, the molecular evolutions of NDV F and HN genes were analyzed. The phylogenetic analyses of NDV sequences indicated that NDV could be divided into two genotypes: Class I (lentogenic strains) and Class II (velogenic or mesogenic strains). Each genotype possesses high gene homology. Furthermore, the selected pressure analysis showed that the dN/dS of velogenic, mesogenic NDV strains F gene was significantly high and the ω(dN/dS) is 1.1725>1. These results imply that mutations in velogenic, mesogenic NDV F gene are favored by positive natural selection and it has acted to diversify NDV virulence at the nucleotide and amino acid level. We estimated that the subsequent rapid adaptation of the Newcastle disease virus to chickens were likely dependent on a high rate of mutation and the positive selection of mutations in the major F gene., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Polysaccharides were isolated from Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A.DC. (PG) and the effects of three polysaccharides (PGPS 80 , PGPS 60 , PGPS t ) on their immunological activities were studied. The structure identification of PGPSs was assessed using physicochemical and spectral methods. Results showed that PGPS t (2.67×10 5 Da) compared to PGPS 80 (1.01×10 5 Da) and PGPS 60 (1.12×10 5 Da) has relatively higher average molecular weight(Mw) at the first peak with a narrower molecular weight distribution and all consisted of glucose, mannose, arabinose, galactose, xylose and rhamnose in different mass percentages. PGPS 80 and PGPS t linked mainly by 1,3-and 1,6-β-d-Galp residues. The immunological efficacy of PGPSs was performed on chicken peritoneal macrophages. Results showed that PGPS t significantly increased phagocytic rates, proliferation and NO production, stimulated macrophages to produce cytokines, including TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 as well as stimulated macrophages to express the maturation markers CD80 and CD86. Palladium (Pd)-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of alkynes has been one of the most studied hydrogenation reactions in the last century. However, kinetic studies conducted to reveal the catalyst's active centers have been hindered because of dynamic surface changes on Pd during the reaction. In the present study, bimetallic Pd-Au nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes have been synthesized at room temperature as catalysts for selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, which show effectively enhanced selectivity compared to their monometallic counterparts. Structural and surface analyses of fresh and reacted catalysts reveal that selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene is favored over nanosized Pd-Au bimetallic phases due to modifications in the Pd surface in terms of neighboring site isolation and electron density reduction.

This study focused on the effect of silica nanoparticles as adjuvant for vaccine applications comprised of gp85, a dominating structural protein of J Subgroup Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV-J), and which was evaluated by comparing with the responsiveness induced by that emulsified in Freund adjuvant. Thirty-six chickens were inoculated twice with gp85 adjuvanted with the silica nanoparticles or Freund's adjuvant at the 2nd and 3rd week old. Two weeks later, the inoculated chickens were challenged with a 10 2.2 50% tissue culture infective dose (TCID50) of ALV-J. The blood samples were collected weekly to detect the serum antibodies and viremia. Results showed that positive serum antibodies (S/P value>0.6) against gp85 emerged at the third week in the inoculated chickens, while the antibodies level persisted longer in silica nanoparticles adjuvanted-group to Freund's adjuvanted-group. Furthermore, viremia in silica nanoparticles adjuvanted-group was recovered more quickly compared with Freund's adjuvanted-group. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in nearly every aspect of biology, including physiological, biochemical, developmental and pathological processes. Therefore, a highly sensitive and accurate method of detection of miRNAs has great potential in research on theory and application, such as the clinical approach to medicine, animal and plant production, as well as stress response. Here, we report a strategic method to detect miRNAs from multicellular organisms, which mainly includes liquid hybridization and solid phase detection (LHSPD); it has been verified in various species and is much more sensitive than traditional biotin-labeled Northern blots. By using this strategy and chemiluminescent detection with digoxigenin (DIG)-labeled or biotin-labeled oligonucleotide probes, as low as 0.01-0.25 fmol [for DIG-CDP Star (disodium2-chloro-5-(4-methoxyspiro{1,2-dioxetane-3,2'-(5'-chloro)tricyclo[3.3.1.13,7]decan}-4-yl)phenyl phosphate) system], 0.005-0.1 fmol (for biotin-CDP Star system), or 0.05-0.5 fmol (for biotin-luminol system) of miRNA can be detected and one-base difference can be distinguished between miRNA sequences. Pogonatherum paniceum is a highly drought- and salt-tolerant plant species that is typically used for ecological restoration and the conservation of soil and water in many countries. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying plant abiotic stress responses, especially to salinity and drought stresses, in species such as P. paniceum could be important to broader crop improvement efforts. GDP-D-mannose pyrophosphorylase (GMPase) is the limiting enzyme in the synthesis of L-ascorbic acid (AsA), which plays a crucial role in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We have cloned and characterized the cDNA of the PpGMP gene of P. paniceum encoding a GMPase. The full-length cDNA sequence contains 1411 nucleotides encoding a putative protein with 361 amino acid residues and an approximate molecular mass of 39.68 kDa. The GMPase transcript was up-regulated in P. paniceum plants subjected to salinity and drought stress, respectively. Transgenic tobacco expressing PpGMPase exhibited enhanced salinity and drought resistance, a higher seed germination rate, better growth performance, a higher AsA content, a more stable redox state, higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and lower levels of malonaldehyde (MDA) and H2O2 under drought and salinity stress. Taken together, expression of PpGMPase in tobacco conferred salinity and drought stress tolerance by increasing the content of AsA, thereby enhancing ROS-detoxifying functions. Thus, PpGMP is a potential candidate gene for crop improvement.

Intronic microRNAs (in-miRNAs) as a class of miRNA family that regulates gene expression are still poorly understood in plants. In this study, we systematically identified rice in-miRNAs by re-mining eight published small RNA-sequencing datasets of rice. Furthermore, based on the collected expression, annotation, and putative target data, we investigated the structures, potential functions, and expression features of these in-miRNAs and the expression patterns of their host genes. A total of 153 in-miRNAs, which account for over 1/4 of the total rice miRNAs, were identified. In silico expression analysis showed that most of them (∼63%) are tissue or stage-specific. However, a majority of their host genes, especially those containing clustered in-miRNAs, exhibit stable high-level expressions among 513 microarray datasets. Although in-miRNAs show diversity in function and mechanism, the DNA methylation directed by 24 nt in-miRNAs may be the main pathway that controls the expressions of target genes, host genes, and even themselves. These findings may enhance our understanding on special functions of in-miRNAs, especially in mediating DNA methylation that was concluded to affect the stability of expression and structure of host and target genes.

A novel iron superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) gene from Jatropha curcas was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). This recombinant enzyme was isolated by a combined procedure involving immobilized metal-ion affinity chromatography and ion-exchange chromatography. The apparent molecular mass of this purified enzyme (designated as JcFe-SOD) was 35 kDa on SDS-PAGE. The full-length complementary DNA sequence of JcFe-SOD contained a 918-bp open reading frame encoding a 305-amino-acid precursor of 34.589 kDa. The result of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry showed that the purified enzyme may own two forms: a dimer and a monomer. The enzyme was relatively stable and showed 54% activity when incubated in 70°C for 60 Min. JcFe-SOD was found to have good pH stability in the pH range of 5.5-9.5 at 25°C over 1 H incubation. The activity of this enzyme was gradually inhibited by increasing concentration of H₂O₂, 2-mercaptoethanol, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Considering that the patients would bear the annoyance of fixed posture for long time when they are examined with gastrointestinal wireless endoscopy, even though portable devices have been developed, the treatments still depend on PC so much, we proposed an embedded solution based on ARM + FPGA. It used embedded ARM9 S3C2440 as processor core, collected images from digestive tract through capsule endoscopy which can be swallowed down there, and wirelessly transferred these images to the receiving system, then used video decoder chip SAA7114H for analog of NTSC video image decode. And under FPGA's logic controlling, effective digital video signal was transferred to S3C2440 for further treatment. Finally within the embedded Linux environment, we programmed the visual user interfaces using the QT/Embedded, realizing the offline record of the real-time video images of digestive tract portable and preferences. It can make patients move more freely and even without PC when examining. In addition, the method greatly improves the efficiency of the doctor, and is more intelligent and with more humane nature.

A full-length cDNA encoding a putative diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT; EC 2.3.1.20) was obtained from sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds. The 1524-bp open reading frame of this cDNA, designated as HaDGAT1, encodes a protein of 507 amino acids with a molecular mass of 58.5 kDa showing high homology to DGAT1 enzymes of other plants. The protein characters, such as a predicted structure with a long N-terminal hydrophilic domain followed by 9 transmembrane domains, acyl-CoA-binding signature, diacylglycerol (DAG)-binding and putative endoplasmic reticulum retrieval motifs (ER-DIR), also indicated that HaDGAT belongs to the DGAT1 family. HaDGAT1 is expressed in all plant tissues especially in developing seeds. Expression of recombinant HaDGAT1 in yeast showed an 1.76-fold increase of total fatty acids, especially unsaturated fatty acids such as palmitoleic acid (enhanced by 86.6%) and oleic acid (enhanced by 81.6%).

Northern blot analysis is a powerful research tool for discovery, validation and expression of genes, and is currently widely used to detect microRNA (miRNA) accumulation. However, the traditional Northern blot procedure, which is based on a support membrane, is overly elaborate and time-consuming, although it is unsurpassed in accuracy for determining the sizes and amounts of multiple small RNAs sharing high sequence identity. Here we present an alternative method derived from plant miRNAs, liquid Northern hybridization, using fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide probes and characterized by simple and specific miRNA determination and quantitation. The entire detection process is completed within a few hours, and multiple miRNAs can be simultaneously detected in a single experiment.
