We examine the effects of imperfect phase estimation of a reference signal on the bit error rate and mutual information over a communication channel influenced by fading and thermal noise. The Two-Wave Diffuse-Power (TWDP) model is utilized for statistical characterization of propagation environment where there are two dominant line-of-sight components together with diffuse ones. We derive novel analytical expression of the Fourier series for probability density function arising from the composite received signal phase. Further, the expression for the bit error rate is presented and numerically evaluated. We develop efficient analytical, numerical and simulation methods for estimating the value of the error floor and identifying the range of acceptable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values in cases when the floor is present during the detection of multilevel phase-shift keying (PSK) signals. In addition, we use Monte Carlo simulations in order to evaluate the mutual information for modulation orders two, four and eight, and identify its dependence on receiver hardware imperfections under the given channel conditions. Our results expose direct correspondence between bit error rate and mutual information value on one side, and the parameters of TWDP channel, SNR and phase noise standard deviation on the other side. The results illustrate that the error floor values are strongly influenced by the phase noise when signals propagate over a TWDP channel. In addition, the phase noise considerably affects the mutual information.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that develops as a consequence of pancreatic β-cell death induced by proinflammatory mediators. Because Origanum vulgare L. ssp. hirtum (Greek oregano) contains antiinflammatory molecules, we hypothesized that it might be beneficial for the treatment of T1D. An ethyl acetate extract of oregano (EAO) was prepared from the leaves by a polar extraction method. Phytochemical composition was determined by liquid chromatography-UV diode array coupled to ion-trap mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization interface (LC/DAD/ESI-MS(n) ). In vitro immunomodulatory effect of EAO was estimated by measuring proliferation (MTT) or cytokine secretion (ELISA) from immune cells. Diabetes was induced by multiple low doses of streptozotocin (MLDS) in male C57BL/6 mice and EAO was administered intraperitoneally for 10 d. Determination of cellular composition (flow cytometry) and cytokine production (ELISA) was performed on 12th d after diabetes induction. EAO suppressed the function of both macrophages and lymphocytes in vitro. In vivo, EAO treatment significantly preserved pancreatic islets and reduced diabetes incidence in MLDS-challenged mice. Besides down-modulatory effect on macrophages, EAO reduced the number of total CD4(+) and activated CD4(+) CD25(+) T cells. Furthermore, EAO affected the number of T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 17 (Th17) cells through downregulation of their key transcription factors T-bet and RORγT. Because EAO treatment protects mice from development of hyperglycemia by reducing proinflammatory macrophage/Th1/Th17 response, this plant extract could represent a basis for future diabetes therapy., (© 2016 Institute of Food Technologists®)

Acrylate nanoanchors of subdiffraction-limited diameter are written with optical stimulated emission depletion (STED) lithography. After incubation, 98% of all nanoanchors are loaded quickly with fluorescently labeled antibodies. Controlling the size of the nanoanchors allows for limiting the number of the antibodies. Direct stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (dSTORM) imaging, statistical distribution of fluorescence, quantitative fluorescence readout, and single molecule blinking consistently prove that 80% of the nanoanchors with a 65 nm diameter are carrying only one antibody each, which are functional as confirmed with live erythrocytes.

Pollen tubes extend through pistil tissues and are guided to ovules where they release sperm for fertilization. Although pollen tubes can germinate and elongate in a synthetic medium, their trajectory is random and their growth rates are slower compared to growth in pistil tissues. Furthermore, interaction with the pistil renders pollen tubes competent to respond to guidance cues secreted by specialized cells within the ovule. The molecular basis for this potentiation of the pollen tube by the pistil remains uncharacterized. Using microarray analysis in Arabidopsis, we show that pollen tubes that have grown through stigma and style tissues of a pistil have a distinct gene expression profile and express a substantially larger fraction of the Arabidopsis genome than pollen grains or pollen tubes grown in vitro. Genes involved in signal transduction, transcription, and pollen tube growth are overrepresented in the subset of the Arabidopsis genome that is enriched in pistil-interacted pollen tubes, suggesting the possibility of a regulatory network that orchestrates gene expression as pollen tubes migrate through the pistil. Reverse genetic analysis of genes induced during pollen tube growth identified seven that had not previously been implicated in pollen tube growth. Two genes are required for pollen tube navigation through the pistil, and five genes are required for optimal pollen tube elongation in vitro. Our studies form the foundation for functional genomic analysis of the interactions between the pollen tube and the pistil, which is an excellent system for elucidation of novel modes of cell-cell interaction., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Uncertainty is an intrinsic phenomenon in control of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). The presence of uncertainty is related to impreciseness of GRN models due to: (1) Errors caused by imperfection of measurement devices and (2) Models' inability to fully capture a complex structure of the GRN. Consequently, there is a discrepancy between actual behaviour of the GRN and what is predicted by its mathematical model. This can result in false control signals, which can drive a cell to an undesirable state. To address the problem of control under uncertainties, a risk-sensitive control paradigm is proposed. Robustness is accomplished by minimisation of the mean exponential cost as opposed to, for instance, minimisation of the mean square cost by risk-neutral controllers. The authors derive an optimal risk-sensitive controller when a GRN is modelled by a context-sensitive probabilistic Boolean network (CSPBN). By using a relation between the relative entropy and free-energy, a relative stability of the cost achieved by the risk-sensitive controller is demonstrated when the distribution of the CSPBN attractors is perturbed, as opposed to the cost of the risk-neutral controller that exhibits increase. The use of the relation between the relative entropy and free-energy to analyse the influence of a particular attractor on the robustness of the controller is studied. The efficiency of the risk-sensitive controller is tested for the CSPBN obtained from the study of malignant melanoma.

The Belgrade dermatovenereologic moulge collection is formed during the period between 1925 and 1958, with one break between 1940 and 1950. The first moulages have been created after the foundation of the Belgrade University's School of Medicine and the Institute of Dermatology and Venereology (IDV), when this form of education became very significant. The collection is now comprised of 350 moulages, of which 280 pieces are completely preserved, whereas 70 are previously damaged. This article describes the work of two authors of moulages: one was Dr. Sergej Pavlovic Alisov, physician, amateur sculptor and painter, and the other was academic sculptor Vojislav Sikoparija. Wide variety of presented cases of skin and venereal diseases have been analysed; before World War I, there was a high proportion and florid pathology of venereal diseases and leprosy, whereas after World War II, these diseases became infrequent. Moulages at the IDV display high authenticity, which in some cases, made possible the correction of original diagnosis according to current criteria. Moulages represent a very significant subject of medical profession, and the need of an expert opinion on the conservation and reparation of moulages, which could be implemented by those in possession of such collections, is emphasized.

A fast rate-optimal rate allocation algorithm is proposed for parallel transmission of scalable images in multichannel systems. Scalable images are transmitted via fixed-length packets. The proposed algorithm selects a subchannel, as well as a channel code rate for each packet, based on the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the subchannels. The resulting scheme provides unequal error protection of source bits and significant gains are obtained over equal error protection schemes. An application of the proposed algorithm to JPEG2000 transmission shows the advantages of exploiting differences in SNRs between subchannels. Multiplexing of multiple sources is also considered, and additional gains are achieved by exploiting information diversity among the sources.

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is shown to significantly outperform LDPC coded on-off keying (OOK) over the atmospheric turbulence channel in terms of both coding gain and spectral efficiency. In the regime of strong turbulence at a bit-error rate of 10(-5), the coding gain improvement of the LDPC coded single-side band unclipped-OFDM system with 64 sub-carriers is larger than the coding gain of the LDPC coded OOK system by 20.2 dB for quadrature-phase-shift keying (QPSK) and by 23.4 dB for binary-phase-shift keying (BPSK).

A maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) symbol decoding supplemented with iterative decoding is proposed as an effective mean for suppression of intrachannel nonlinearities. The MAP detector, based on Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv algorithm, operates on the channel trellis, a dynamical model of intersymbol interference, and provides soft-decision outputs processed further in an iterative decoder. A dramatic performance improvement is demonstrated. The main reason is that the conventional maximum-likelihood sequence detector based on Viterbi algorithm provides hard-decision outputs only, hence preventing the soft iterative decoding. The proposed scheme operates very well in the presence of strong intrachannel intersymbol interference, when other advanced forward error correction schemes fail, and it is also suitable for 40 Gb/s upgrade over existing 10 Gb/s infrastructure.

Optical Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) is shown to outperform RZ-OOK transmission in high-speed optical communications systems in terms of transmission distance and spectral efficiency. The OOFDM in combination with the subcarrier multiplexing offers a significant improvement in spectral efficiency of at least 2.9 bits/s/Hz.

We evaluate the use of edge-illuminated holographic Bragg filters formed in phenanthrenequinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) for optical-code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) coding and decoding applications. Experimental cascaded Bragg filters are formed to select two different wavelengths with a fixed distance between the gratings and are directly coupled to a fiber-measurement system. The configuration and tolerances of the cascaded gratings are shown to be practical for time-wavelength OCDMA applications.

One of the main obstacles to the wider use of the modern error-correction codes is that, due to the complex behavior of their decoding algorithms, no systematic method which would allow characterization of the bit-error-rate (BER) is known. This is especially true at the weak noise where many systems operate and where coding performance is difficult to estimate because of the diminishingly small number of errors. We show how the instanton method of physics allows one to solve the problem of BER analysis in the weak noise range by recasting it as a computationally tractable minimization problem.

We introduce a method that allows analytical or semianalytical estimating of the post-error correction bit error rate (BER) when a forward-error correction is utilized for transmitting information through a noisy channel. The generic method that applies to a variety of error-correction schemes in the regimes where the BER is low is illustrated using the example of a finite-size code approximated by a treelike structure. Exploring the statistical physics formulation of the problem we find that the BER decreases with the signal-to-noise ratio nonuniformly, i.e., crossing over through a sequence of phases. The higher the signal-to-noise ratio the lower the symmetry of the phase dominating BER.

The effects of obidoxime, a pyridinium oxime, on the cholinesterase activity and acetylcholine content of the submandibular glands of rats poisoned with armin, an organophosphorus anticholinesterase agent, were studied. The results indicate that obidoxime-induced reactivation of phosphorylated cholinesterase can suppress completely the increase in the concentration of acetylcholine that develops within the submandibular gland after administration of armin alone.
