Improperly cooked fish, carrying active metacercariae (MCs), can pose a significant risk for transmitting fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FBZTs) to human consumers. This study aimed to enhance our understanding of FBZTs by conducting a comprehensive cross-sectional analysis involving various fish species, such as Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), and red-belly tilapia (Tilapia zillii). These fish specimens were collected from distinct Egyptian governorates, specifically Giza, Kafr al-Shaykh, and Fayoum. The recovered flukes from experimentally infected domestic pigeons were identified as Prohemistomum vivax, Haplorchis pumilio, and Pygidiopsis genata based on morphological features. Furthermore, the identity of the retrieved adult flukes was confirmed using three species-specific primers for PCR amplification and sequencing analysis of the ITS rDNA region and have been deposited in GenBank with the following accession numbers: P. vivax (OR291421.1 and OR291422.1), P. genata (OP099561.1), and H. pumilio (OM439581.1-OP090510.1). Quantitative real-time PCR targeting the immunological genes Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and Interleukin-1 (IL-1Β) was employed to compare the cellular immune response between infected with EMCs and uninfected O. niloticus. The results indicated a significant increase in TNF- and IL-1Β levels in FBZTs-infected vs un-infected fishes. Importantly, the presence of adult flukes and EMCs led to substantial histological alterations in both experimentally infected pigeons and naturally infected fish tissues. Myxozoa, a unique group of obligate endoparasites within the phylum Cnidaria, can cause emerging diseases in wild and cultured fish populations. Recently, the myxozoan Myxobolus bejeranoi has been identified as a prevalent pathogen infecting the gills of cultured hybrid tilapia, leading to systemic immune suppression and considerable mortality. Here, we employed a proteomic approach to examine the impact of M. bejeranoi infection on fish gills, focusing on the structure of the granulomata, or cyst, formed around the proliferating parasite to prevent its spread to surrounding tissue. Enrichment analysis showed increased immune response and oxidative stress in infected gill tissue, most markedly in the cyst's wall. The intense immune reaction included a consortium of endopeptidase inhibitors, potentially combating the myxozoan arsenal of secreted proteases. Analysis of the cyst's proteome and histology staining indicated that keratin intermediate filaments contribute to its structural rigidity. Moreover, we uncovered skin-specific proteins, including a grainyhead-like transcription factor and a teleost-specific S100 calcium-binding protein that may play a role in epithelial morphogenesis and cysts formation. These findings deepen our understanding of the proteomic elements that grant the cyst its distinctive nature at the critical interface between the fish host and myxozoan parasite.

In the present study, we examined 30 individuals of introduced African cichlids, Oreochromis niloticus and Coptodon rendalli, collected in a river spring of the Pardo River, Paranapanema River basin, southeastern Brazil. Based on morphological and molecular analyses of the partial LSU rDNA gene, we identified four species of monogeneans, Cichlidogyrus tilapiae, C. thurstonae, C. mbirizei, and Scutogyrus longicornis on the gills of O. niloticus, whereas individuals of C. rendalli were infested only with C. papernastrema. This is the first record of C. mbirizei and C. papernastrema in tilapias from Brazil. The ecological consequences of the introduction of exotic species of tilapia such as O. niloticus and C. rendalli along with their monogenean parasites in a wild environment represented by a river spring are discussed. Our new molecular data on Cichlidogyrus and Scutogyrus contribute to the investigation of the phylogenetic interrelationships of these widely distributed genera of monogeneans since their species composition is still unsettled., (© M.B. Invasive Nile tilapias negatively impact native tilapia species through hybridisation and competition. However, the co-introduction of parasites with Nile tilapia, and subsequent changes in parasite communities, are scarcely documented. Monogeneans are known pathogens of cultured Nile tilapia, although little is known about their fate once Nile tilapias establish in new ecosystems. We investigate the parasitological consequences of Nile tilapia introduction on native tilapias in basins in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Zimbabwe, focusing on ectoparasitic dactylogyrids (Monogenea). Using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) and nuclear 18S-internal transcribed spacer 1 (18S-ITS1) rDNA region of 128 and 166 worms, respectively, we evaluated transmission of several dactylogyrid species. Parasite spillover from Nile tilapia was detected for Cichlidogyrus tilapiae to Coptodon guineensis in Cameroon, Cichlidogyrus thurstonae to Oreochromis macrochir in the DRC, and Cichlidogyrus halli and C. tilapiae to Coptodon rendalli in Zimbabwe. Parasite spillback to Nile tilapia was detected for Cichlidogyrus papernastrema and Scutogyrus gravivaginus from Tilapia sparrmanii and Cichlidogyrus dossoui from C. rendalli or T. sparrmanii in the DRC, and Cichlidogyrus chloeae from Oreochromis cf. mortimeri and S. gravivaginus from O. macrochir in Zimbabwe. 'Hidden' transmissions (i.e. transmission of certain parasite lineages of species that are naturally present on both alien and native hosts) were detected for C. tilapiae and Scutogyrus longicornis between Nile tilapia and Oreochromis aureus and C. tilapiae between Nile tilapia and Oreochromis mweruensis in the DRC, and Cichlidogyrus sclerosus and C. tilapiae between Nile tilapia and O. cf. mortimeri in Zimbabwe. A high density of Nile tilapia occurring together with native tilapias, and the broad host range and/or environmental tolerance of the transmitted parasites, are proposed as factors behind parasite transmission through ecological fitting. However, continuous monitoring and the inclusion of environmental variables are necessary to understand the long-term consequences of these transmissions on native tilapias and to elucidate other underlying factors influencing these transmissions., (Copyright © 2023 Australian Society for Parasitology. Translocation of fishes for aquaculture has resulted in the co-introduction of some of their parasites. African cichlid fishes, generically called "tilapias" have been introduced worldwide, along with their monogenean parasites. In a nation-wide survey, we characterised monogeneans of the genus Gyrodactylus infecting farmed "tilapia" throughout Mexico. We also collected native fishes around farms, to look for potential parasite spillover from cultured fishes. Monogeneans were identified taxonomically using morphological and molecular characters. Originally African, pathogenic Gyrodactylus cichlidarum was recorded in every farm surveyed, infecting different "tilapia" varieties, as well as three native cichlid fish species. Previously, we had shown that G. cichlidarum also infects native, non-cichlid fishes in Mexico. We also recorded that Gyrodactylus yacatli is widely distributed in Mexico, infecting cultured "tilapia" and native fishes; and present data indicating that this is a further translocated African parasite. A third, unidentified gyrodactylid infected farmed and native fishes in Chiapas, southern Mexico; we describe the new species as Gyrodactylus shinni n. sp., and provide evidence that this is a third monogenean translocated with African fish. The wide distribution of exotic parasites co-introduced with "tilapia" and their spillover to native fishes may have an important impact on the ichthyofauna in Mexico, one the world's megadiverse countries.

Parasitic infestations on cultured fish due to the crustacean isopod Alitropus typus has been on the rise in recent years, causing large scale mortality, leading to significant economic loss to the farmer. Crustaceans are encased by an exoskeleton composed of chitin, protein and lipid microfibril frameworks, in which calcium carbonate is deposited. A strategy focused on the degradation of the exoskeletal framework utilizing nonpathogenic microorganisms that produce a wide variety of hydrolytic enzymes may be an environment-friendly and safe alternative to control these pests. The present study was aimed to formulate a microbial consortium having chitinase, protease, lipase and urease producing bacteria from seafood processing effluents that can potentially degrade the exoskeleton of A. typus. Based on the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the extracellular enzymes produced by the isolates, a novel consortium was prepared with three strains that were not antagonistic to each other and were nonpathogenic. The chitinase producing - Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Bacillus altitudinis that produced protease and lipase as well; and non-chitinase producing Klebsiella pneumoniae were taken in the ratio of 1:1:2 respectively (10 9 CFU/mL). The result showed 100 % mortality of the isopods within five days when applied at a concentration of 2% (v/v) of 10 7 CFU/mL without any adverse effect on the fish host Oreochromis niloticus. Analysis of the ultrastructural alterations of the parasites by Environmental Scanning Electron microscopy (ESEM) showed noticeable exoskeletal damages. The microbial members of the consortium displayed remarkable chemotactic properties towards A. typus. The results suggest that the microbial consortium acts as a potential parasiticide that can be used for the control of A. typus infestation in aquaculture ponds., thus benefitting the aquaculture industry especially the small-scale farmers., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. The mechanisms of action of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in monogenean parasites of the genus Cichlidogyrus were investigated through a microarray hybridization approach using genomic information from the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans . The effects of two concentrations of AgNPs were explored, low (6 µg/L Ag) and high (36 µg/L Ag). Microarray analysis revealed that both concentrations of AgNPs activated similar biological processes, although by different mechanisms. Expression profiles included genes involved in detoxification, neurotoxicity, modulation of cell signaling, reproduction, embryonic development, and tegument organization as the main biological processes dysregulated by AgNPs. Two important processes (DNA damage and cell death) were mostly activated in parasites exposed to the lower concentration of AgNPs. To our knowledge, this is the first study providing information on the sub-cellular and molecular effects of exposure to AgNPs in metazoan parasites of fish.

The study provides descriptions of two new species of Enterogyrus coexisting in the stomach of the Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters). Enterogyrus multispiralis n. sp. and Enterogyrus mashegoi n. sp. were collected from hosts sampled at Nwanedi-Luphephe Dam, Limpopo River System, South Africa. The two new species can be differentiated from other members of the genus based on the spirality characteristics of the cirrus. Enterogyrus multispiralis n. sp. has an unique 8/9-2-4 cirrus spiral formula. The length of the cirrus and its spriral formula 5-2-3 make E. mashegoi n. sp. morphometrically unique from other Enterogyrus spp. Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA partial 18S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) and 28S were obtained and compared with available sequences of Enterogyrus in GenBank. This is the first record of data on 18S rDNA region of Enterogyrus spp. A phylogenetic comparison was conducted, which included all data available for Enterogyrus spp., but this was limited to 28S data. The closest species to both new species of the present study was an undescribed Enterogyrus sp. 2 from Sarotherodon galilaeus (Linnaeus) described from Senegal (i.e. 2.1 and 2.9% uncorrected pairwise genetic distance to E. multispiralis n. sp. and E. mashegoi n. sp., respectively). These species represent new records for Africa resulting in a total number of 12 described valid species.

Background: Monogenea van Beneden, 1858 is a group of parasitic flatworms, commonly found infecting bony fish. Several genera, such as Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960, are reported to include potential pathogenic species that can negatively impact aquaculture fish stocks. They can switch from introduced to native fish and vice versa. In Africa (and all over the world), fish species belonging to Cichlidae are often kept in aquaculture and represent a major source of food. Thus, research on the biodiversity and occurrence of monogenean species on these fish is of importance for aquaculture and conservation. The present study is a survey of the diversity of species of Cichlidogyrus in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on three cichlid species: Orthochromis sp. 'Lomami', Serranochromis cf. macrocephalus, and Tilapia sparrmanii Smith, 1840., Methods: Specimens of Cichlidogyrus were isolated from the gills and mounted on glass slides with Hoyer's medium. The genital and haptoral hard parts were measured and drawn using interference contrast., Results: In total, six species of Cichlidogyrus were found, all new to science: C. bulbophallus n. sp. and C. pseudozambezensis n. sp. on S. cf. macrocephalus, C. flagellum n. sp. and C. lobus n. sp. on T. sparrmanii, C. ranula n. sp. on S. cf. macrocephalus and Orthochromis sp. 'Lomami', and C. maeander n. sp. found on Orthochromis sp. 'Lomami' and T. sparrmanii. The first four species are considered to be strict specialists, C. ranula n. sp. an intermediate generalist and C. maeander n. sp. a generalist. These parasite species show morphological similarities to species found in the Lower Guinea and Zambezi ichthyofaunal provinces, which might be explained by past river capture events between river systems of the Congo Province and both these regions., Conclusions: Serranochromis cf. macrocephalus and Orthochromis sp. 'Lomami' can harbour respectively three and two species of Cichlidogyrus, all described in this study. Tilapia sparrmanii can harbour seven species, of which three are described in the present study. These results highlight the species diversity of this parasite genus in the Congo Basin.

A new species of Dermoergasilus Ho & Do, 1982 (Copepoda: Ergasilidae) parasitic on the gills of the redbelly tilapia Coptodon zillii (Gervais) from Basrah, southern Iraq, is described. Dermoergasilus cichlidus n. sp. is morphologically similar to D. longiabdominalis El-Rashidy & Boxshall, 2001 in the body length to width ratio, the swimming legs armature, the shape of the urosome and the small slightly spiniform seta on the exopodal segment of leg 5. However, the main differences are the presence of long setae on the endopod of leg 1 in D. cichlidus n. sp. (vs relatively short setae); the inner apical spine on the tip of the endopod of leg 1 being only slightly longer than the outer apical spine (vs inner apical spine about twice as long as the outer); the first interpodal sternite ornamented with spinules (vs interpodal sternites not ornamented); and the caudal rami and anal somite of equal length (vs caudal rami length c.2/3 of the length of the anal somite). Dermoergasilus occidentalis can be distinguished from D. cichlidus n. sp. by the relative length of the antennal segments, the absence of a minute terminal spine on the digital process of the caudal ramus and by differences in the mouth parts.

Despite their pathogenic effects on fish, the diversity of trematodes from the family Diplostomidae remains vastly unexplored in Africa and specifically South Africa. To date, only six species of diplostomids have been reported from freshwater fishes in this country, with only two species being molecularly characterised. In this study, combined morphological and molecular analyses were used to identify and describe metacercariae of the Diplostomidae (Digenea) parasitising banded tilapia Tilapia sparrmanii (Perciformes: Cichlidae) collected within the North West Province, South Africa. Metacercariae found on the body surface and muscles of the fish were separated into four groups based on the infection site, the colour of the cysts and the morphology of excysted specimens. Isolates from each group were further identified through molecular analyses. Comparative analyses of the newly generated 28S rDNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and cox1 sequences revealed the presence of four species of which three were identified as Bolbophorus sp. 3 (28S rDNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and cox1), Posthodiplostomum sp. 9 (28S rDNA and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and Uvulifer sp. 4 (28S rDNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and cox1), respectively, and the fourth species belonging to the Diplostomidae gen. sp. (28S rDNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and cox1). Morphology of metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum sp. was compared with metacercariae of this genus previously reported in fishes in Africa. This study presents the first molecular data for species of Bolbophorus Dubois, 1935, Posthodiplostomum Dubois, 1936 and Uvulifer Yamaguti, 1934 from Africa, and it highlights the need for future research on the diversity of diplostomid parasites in South Africa and in Africa as whole.

Introduction: Lipidomics is an emerging field with great promise for biomarker and mechanistic studies due to lipids diverse biological roles. Clinical research applying lipidomics is drastically increasing, with research methods and tools developed for clinical applications equally promising for wildlife studies., Objectives: Limited research to date has applied lipidomics, especially of the intact lipidome, to wildlife studies. Therefore, we examine the application of lipidomics for in situ studies on Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) in Loskop Dam, South Africa. Wide-scale mortality events of aquatic life associated with an environmentally-derived inflammatory disease, pansteatitis, have occurred in this area., Methods: The lipidome of adipose tissue (n = 31) and plasma (n = 51) from tilapia collected from Loskop Dam were characterized using state of the art liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry., Results: Lipid profiles reflected pansteatitis severity and were significantly different between diseased and healthy individuals. Over 13 classes of lipids associated with inflammation, cell death, and/or oxidative damage were upregulated in pansteatitis-affected adipose tissue, including ether-lipids, short-chained triglyceride oxidation products, sphingolipids, and acylcarnitines. Ceramides showed a 1000-fold increase in the most affected adipose tissues and were sensitive to disease severity. In plasma, triglycerides were found to be downregulated in pansteatitis-affected tilapia., Conclusion: Intact lipidomics provided useful mechanistic data and possible biomarkers of pansteatitis. Lipids pointed to upregulated inflammatory pathways, and ceramides serve as promising biomarker candidates for pansteatitis. As comprehensive coverage of the lipidome aids in the elucidation of possible disease mechanisms, application of lipidomics could be applied to the understanding of other environmentally-derived inflammatory conditions, such as those caused by obesogens.

Tilapias are important aquaculture fishes that have been introduced widely all over the world, often carrying their monogenean parasites with them. An extensive investigation on monogeneans of invasive tilapias was conducted in 19 natural water sources in south China between July 2015 and December 2017. We found nine known species of monogeneans, i.e., Enterogyrus coronatus, E. malmbergi, Cichlidogyrus cirratus, C. halli, C. sclerosus, C. thurstonae, C. tilapiae, Scutogyrus longicornis, Gyrodactylus cichlidarum, and one unknown Gyrodactylus species. In addition to reporting ten new hosts and four new geographical records, we observed new morphological characteristics of these species. Observation on living specimens of Enterogyrus spp. demonstrated that these two species have characteristic opisthaptoral retraction capacities, while the opisthaptor glands were not observed in our specimens of E. coronatus and E. malmbergi. The morphological differences of the accessory piece of the male copulatory complex between C. cirratus and C. mbirizei (character for species differentiation) could result from the observation at different perspectives, which indicates that C. mbirizei is likely a synonym of C. cirratus. A more detailed structure of the sclerotized parts of Cichlidogyrus spp. and S. longicornis were revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Myxosporean infections can cause severe damage to commercially grown tilapia. Here, we report a novel myxosporean that was found in gills of Oreochromis aureus male × Oreochromis niloticus female, which is an important aquaculture tilapia hybrid in Israel. Three-month-old fish were found to have cysts located in gill muscle tissue, which were filled with both immature and mature spores. Affected fish displayed higher mortality rate. Spore dimensions (10.8 ± 0.7 μm length × 6.8 ± 0.6 μm width) and molecular characterization using 18S ribosomal DNA revealed that the unknown parasite belongs in the Myxobolus clade. Based on the infection site, spore morphology and molecular characterization, we describe this parasite as Myxobolus bejeranoi n. sp. (MF401455). Phylogenetic analysis showed that the new species is most closely related to two Myxobolus spp. from O. niloticus in Egypt and Ghana.

Austrodiplostomum compactum from Nannopterum brasilianus, and its metacercaria from Geophagus sp. and Oreochromis mossambicus captured (1979) at its type locality, Valencia Lake, Venezuela, by the author, are redescribed. The adult is characterized by its large body size, and an oral sucker smaller than the pharynx. The metacercaria has a similar body size as the adult, and the small genital primordia occupy 4.1-7.3% of body length. Experimental infections in chickens with metacercariae of Diplostomulum mordax from brains of Odonthestes bonariensis, captured (2015) at Dique Paso de las Piedras, near Bahia Blanca City, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, resulted in 10 adults 5 days postexposure. These adults correspond to Austrodiplostomum mordax as described from N. brasilianus at Lacombe Lagoon, Buenos Aires Province, and differ from A. compactum in their smaller body size, and an oral sucker larger than the pharynx. The metacercaria has a similar body size as the adult and differs mainly in that the larger genital primordia occupy 11.6-13.8% of body length. The status of earlier published Austrodiplostomum species in the American continent is discussed in view of available morphological and molecular data. A lectotype of A. mordax is here designated, and Austrodiplostomum ostrowskiae is considered as a new synonym of A. compactum.

As part of ongoing surveys of the gyrodactylid parasite fauna of freshwater fishes in Mexico, we recorded the infection of three species of poeciliids (Poecilia mexicana, Poeciliopsis gracilis, and Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus [syn.=Heterandria bimaculata]) with Gyrodactylus cichlidarum, a monogenean parasite of cichlid fishes, which has been co-introduced globally with its translocated, African "tilapia" hosts. This tilapia pathogen was found on poeciliid fishes both within their native distribution range in the Gulf of Mexico slope, as well as on invasive species artificially introduced to the Mexican highlands, to rivers draining into the Pacific Ocean. Identity of G. cichlidarum was confirmed by morphological and molecular analyses. Prevalence and abundance of infection were low, but this is the first record of G. cichlidarum infecting poeciliids (Cyprinodontiformes), which are distantly related to this parasite's primary cichlid fish hosts (Perciformes). This study provides evidence that G. cichlidarum, a recognized pathogen which has been co-introduced globally with its cichlid fish hosts for aquacultural purposes, is able to infect non-related poeciliid fishes inhabiting water bodies adjacent to tilapia farms, thereby potentially increasing its ability to disperse between farms and different river basins. It is of particular concern that G. cichlidarum was found on poeciliids, as these invasive fishes have been introduced worldwide and could act as carriers for this parasite known to induce significant mortality of farmed tilapias - globally, the second most important freshwater aquaculture fish group, after the carps., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. The flatworms of the genus Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae) are gill parasites of freshwater fish, affecting predominantly the family Cichlidae. Cichlidogyrus tiberianus Paperna, 1960 and Cichlidogyrus dossoui Douëllou, 1993 are among the most widely distributed species of the genus, occurring in several African river basins and infecting many different host species, including the economically important Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus) and redbreast tilapia Coptodon rendalli (Boulenger). Despite their wide distribution, C. tiberianus and C. dossoui have so far been studied only by light microscopy. In this paper they are redescribed on the basis of scanning electron microscopy of newly-collected material. The new material was obtained from redbreast tilapia caught in the Luapula River (D. R. Congo). The haptoral sclerites and genitalia are redescribed and illustrated in detail. Special attention is given to the complex morphology of the male copulatory organ.

This study investigates the recent evolution of a rich parasite community associated with one of the world's most invasive species, the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Populations from the species' native range (Mozambique) are compared to a population from New Caledonia (Wester Pacific), an island where the species was introduced in 1954. The results support the complete local extinction of the gill parasite community in the course of the invasion process. Up to six gill parasite species per locality were documented in the O. mossambicus native range, and previous surveys consistently reported at least one parasite species introduced along African cichlid species established out of Africa. The absence of parasites in New Caledonia is therefore exceptional. This can be attributed to local factors, such as a strong initial population bottleneck, the likely absence of multiple host introductions, and the frequent occurrence of brackish watersheds that might enhance the probability for natural deparasitation.

Fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FZT) including heterophyids and opisthorchiids are prevalent in native and aquaculture fish in Southeast Asia. FZT are reported highly prevalent in juvenile aquaculture fish that belonged to the family Heterophyidae, particularly Haplorchis taichui. Aquaculture fish are reported to have varying levels of natural infection with H. taichui, but data for their susceptibility as well as resistance to infection are not available. The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility of five aquaculture fish to H. taichui. Experimental infections were performed by exposing fish individually to 0 (control), 50, 100, or 200 H. taichui cercariae for 12 h. Metacercarial burden was measured at 45 days postinfection. Three out of five fish species, silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), were highly susceptible to H. taichui infection with percentage ranging from 93.33 to 100%. The Nile and red tilapia were not susceptible to infection. Among the susceptible fish species, silver barb had higher intensity of H. taichui metacercariae than common carp and mrigal (P < 0.001). Metacercarial burden significantly correlated with the dose of cercarial infection (P < 0.001). Our findings that common aquaculture fish species have varying degrees of susceptibility to H. taichui infection provide important information to reduce parasite transmission in aquaculture fish.

The study re-evaluated the status of encysted metacercariae (EMC) of Family Heterophyidae in fresh and brackish water fish in an endemic focus in Egypt, as well as to study their morphological pattern. Seasonal variation of EMC was matched with their prevalence and intensity in infected fish. The study covered a period of one year from first of April 2011 to end of March 2012. The total percent of infection in the examined fish was 71.9% and 42.6% for brackish and fresh water respectively. The highest prevalence of the recovered EMC in both sources of water was for Heterophyes heterophyes (57.9%), followed by Pygidiopsis genata (39.7%), other Heterophyes spp. (21.09%), Haplorchis pumilio (19.5%), Phagicola spp (19.5%) and Stictodora tridactyla (6.2%). The highest mean intensity of the recovered EMC in both sources of water was for Pygidiopsis genata (10.27±2.83), followed H. heterophyes (9.45±7.13), Haplorchis pumilio (1.76±2.03), Phagicola spp. (1.59±1.71), other Heterophyes spp. (0.82±0.99) and Stictodora tridactyla (0.48±0.92). By using ANOVA test, there was significant difference in sizes of EMC of Pyigidiopsis genata (P=0.04) and Phagicola spp. EMC (P=0.03) in comparison to corresponding ones in all fish species. By using Student T-test, there was significant higher size of Haplorchis pumilio EMC in Tilapia species in comparison to the corresponding one in Mugil species. Monthly variation showed that summer was the season with the highest prevalence and highest mean intensity of EMC in both brackish and fresh water fish. Also, undifferentiated EMC most properly of genus Centrocestus was demonstrated.

Heterophyiasis is an intestinal disease that remains endemic in many parts of the world, particularly the Nile Delta of Egypt and Southeast Asia, yet the populations at risk of infection expand throughout the world. The main histopathological feature of infection is villous atrophy, but the underlying factors are not well understood. Apoptosis of the villous epithelial cells was previously reported to be enhanced during intestinal parasitic infections; however, the role of Heterophyes heterophyes on enterocyte apoptosis was to be explored. Therefore, intestinal sections from mice experimentally infected with H. heterophyes were studied histopathologically and immunohistochemically for caspase-3 and NF-κB and compared to non-infected control mice. Atrophic villi covered by poorly differentiated epithelial cells were observed in the 2nd week post-infection. Also, we noted marked hyperplasia of the intestinal crypts with abundant inflammatory cellular infiltrate in the lamina propria, as well as apoptosis of cells lining the intestinal villi. Both caspase-3 and NF-κB showed positive staining in the intestinal epithelial cells with varying grades of intensity over the length of infection. Caspase-3 expression rose at the 2nd week p.i. then decreased over time, whereas NF-κB expression showed progressive increase throughout the weeks of infection. In conclusion, caspase-3 activation may be an important factor in the apoptotic pathway in early heterophyiasis, and, on the other hand, NF-κB seems to play a role in protecting the intestinal cells from excessive apoptosis. These observations may help open new avenues for tissue protective therapies that avoid or control the deleterious processes of apoptosis in various inflammatory conditions., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. This study presents the distribution of 15 major and trace elements in sediments and fish and their pericardial parasites from Lake Naivasha, Kenya. The lake is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley and is under strong anthropogenic pressure mainly due to agricultural activities. Its fish provide a valuable protein source for approximately 100,000 people in the area. Fish and their parasites have been acknowledged as indicators of environmental quality due to their accumulation potential for both essential and nonessential trace elements. A total of 34 specimens of the blue spotted tilapia Oreochromis leucostictus and pooled samples of their pericardial parasite, the anisakid nematode Contracaecum multipapillatum (larvae 3), were examined. Element concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). The concentrations of elements in the sediments reflected the geology of the area and did not point to pollution: none of the investigated trace elements, including Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn, showed elevated values. In contrast, concentrations in the fish muscle were elevated for Li, Sr, Cd, and Zn, with high target hazard quotients (THQ > 0.1) indicating a potential health risk to the consumers of this fish. Fish liver showed significantly higher concentrations of the trace elements Fe, Mn, Cd, and Cu compared to the muscle and C. multipapillatum. In the parasite, Zn had the highest concentration, but the worms only minimally accumulated trace elements in relation to their fish host.

Fish is an important food source for an estimated 300,000 people inhabiting the shores of Lake Turkana, Kenya. Despite its large size (7560 km2) and importance, the lake remains one of the least studied in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. This study describes the parasite community of the elongate tigerfish Hydrocynus forskahlii (Cuvier, 1819) and the redbelly tilapia Tilapia zillii (Gervais, 1848). A total of 87 individuals (43 H. forskahlii and 44 T. zillii) were dissected and examined for parasites. Two taxa infected H. forskahlii, the dominant one being an anisakid nematode Contracaecum sp. (L3) (P = 83.7%, mean intensity (MI) = 46.0, abundance (A) = 38.5). Twelve parasite taxa were recovered from T. zillii, with metacestodes of the gryporhynchid cestode Amirthalingamia macracantha being dominant (P = 79.5, MI = 10.3, A = 8.2). This was the first report of a mixture of merocercoids and plerocercoids in the same host. Fish size was positively correlated with the major parasite infection levels, but, the prevalence of Contracaecum sp. in H. forskahlii was negatively correlated with size, probably reflecting ontogenetic shifts in habitats and diets with age. Fish sex was not a significant influencing factor, with the exception of Contracaecum sp. in H. forskahlii, where prevalence differed significantly between sexes (p<0.05), with the females having a higher prevalence than the males. We conclude that H. forskahlii had a poor parasitic community but that the infection levels with Contracaecum sp. were high. T. zillii had a rich parasite fauna, although, most parasites occurred at low intensities.

Clinostomidae are digeneans characterized by a complex taxonomic history, continuously under revision based on both morphological and molecular analysis. Among the 14 species considered valid so far Clinostomum phalacrocoracis has been well described only at the adult stage, whereas the morphology of the metacercarial stage has been reported only once. During a parasitological survey carried out on 262 wild cichlids sampled from Lake Kinneret (Israel) metacercariae referable to C. phalacrocoracis were found in 18 fingerlings. In this study, we report this clinostomid species for the first time in wild fish from Israel describing the metacercarial stage of Clinostomum phalacrocoracis, coupling its morphological description with molecular analysis carried out on ITS rDNA and COI mtDNA sequences., (© M. Chilodonelids are small ciliated protozoans found worldwide and can be dangerous in culture conditions. This study presents morphometric data on the ciliate Chilodonella that is found in cultured Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), native bait fish tuvira (Gymnotus aff. inaequilabiatus) and native pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) and includes a histopathological assessment of the changes that occur in the pacu. For parasitic diagnosis, skin and gill samples were scraped onto slides, dried at room temperature, stained with Giemsa or impregnated with silver nitrate, and the measurements were obtained from photomicrographs. In the diseased pacu, the first gill arch was collected and fixed in a 10% buffered formalin solution for histopathological analysis. Parasite specimens from the different collection sites were identified morphologically as C. hexasticha Kiernik (1909). Diseased fish exhibited depigmentation, skin ulceration, scale loss, excessive mucus production and gill lesions. Histopathological analysis of pacu gills displayed epithelial proliferation with mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate, hemorrhages, and scattering necrosis. In Brazilian-farmed fish this is the first record of C. hexasticha, which has great pathogenic potential in cultured freshwater species. A checklist of the 23 species of Ancyrocephalidae (Monogenea) parasitizing Tilapia species sampled from both sides of the Cameroon Volcanic Line is provided. As already reported elsewhere, Cichlidogyrus aegypticus in Cameroon shows two different shape of its vagina, and C. tilapiae, C. arthracanthus and C. tiberianus were found on a wide range of host species. Among the 23 studied species of Monogenea, three are considered new species and are described herein: Cichlidogyrus berminensis n. sp. from Tilapia bemini, characterized by a short penis with marked narrow heel, a simple and straight accessory piece ending in a large hook, and a medium sized pair of uncinuli I; Cichlidogyrus gillesi n. sp. from Tilapia guineensis, characterized by a large and trapezoid heel of the penis and a S-shaped and wrinkle walled vagina; and Scutogyrus vanhovei n. sp. from Tilapia mariae, characterized by the presence of a distinct swollen portion of the penis. From a parasite's point of view, the CVL has no influence on species dispersion/distribution.

Background: Infections of the ciliate protozoan Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet, 1876, can cause heavy mortalities in freshwater aquaculture systems. Following the ban of malachite green on fish for human consumption, currently available chemical therapies are only partially efficacious even when repeatedly applied. There is, therefore, an urgent necessity to identify more efficient and environmentally friendly control strategies. In the present study, the use of a substrate algae feeder leopard pleco, Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps, as a biological agent to control I. multifiliis infections on blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus, reared in a warm-water, experimental tank-based system is explored., Results: The free-swimming protomont stage of I. multifiliis demonstrated selective settlement behaviour towards biofilm-covered substrates. Following a controlled exposure, the number of I. multifiliis trophonts establishing on naive blue tilapia, O. aureus, was 4.9 ± 0.4 when reared with G. gibbiceps, significantly lower than when reared in isolation (13.3 ± 0.9; ANOVA, P < 0.001)., Conclusion: This study demonstrates for the first time the potential of G. gibbiceps as a biological control to reduce I. multifiliis on commercially valuable fish stocks in warm-water systems. This likely originated from the grazing activity of G. gibbiceps on the biofilm layer upon which the multiplicative stage of I. multifiliis was shown preferentially to settle. Therapeutic strategies against pathogenic protozoan species like I. multifiliis could greatly benefit from incorporating, where appropriate, a biological control targeting the external multiplicative life stages of the parasite, potentially reducing the current dependence on chemical interventions., (Copyright © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Aquatic systems are affected by a variety of anthropogenic activities that decrease water quality through the introduction of organic and inorganic pollutants. To investigate the relationship between fish parasite communities and water quality, metazoan parasites were examined in 140 specimens of the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) sampled in three lakes in the Limpopo Province, namely the Luphephe-Nwanedi Dams (regarded as unpolluted), the Flag Boshielo Dam (regarded as moderately polluted) and a return water dam on a mine site (regarded as polluted). The monogenean parasites Cichlidogyrus halli, digenean larval stages of Clinostomum and Diplostomum spp. and a gryporynchid cestode were found in or on O. mossambicus in all the sampled sites. The distribution of monogeneans (Cichlidogyrus sclerosus, Cichlidogyrus dossoui, Cichlidogyrus tilapiae, Scutogyrus longicornis and three Enterogyrus spp.), metacercarial stages of two digeneans (Neascus and Acanthostomum spp.) and nematodes (an unidentified nematode, Contracaecum sp., Paracamallanus cyathopharynx and Procamallanus laevionchus) was limited to the unpolluted and moderately polluted lakes. Larval stages of Diplostomum sp. were present in O. mossambicus collected from the unpolluted and polluted sites. The variability of the calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity) and the parameters of species richness and diversity suggest that the structure of parasite communities are affected by the pollution levels of the water. The unpolluted reference site had the highest species richness and the highest overall parasite abundance values.

The objectives of the present study were to standardize a reproducible infection procedure with Cryptocaryon irritans and to examine the effects of infectious dose level on the immune protection in Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). This study demonstrated that direct enumeration of trophonts on the pectoral fin was useful to quantitatively assess immune protection against C. irritans. The number of trophonts on a pectoral fin was positively correlated with infectious dose of live theronts. Fish immunized by direct exposure under controlled laboratory conditions allowed for in depth examination of the effects of the degree of infectious dose on immune response. There was no significant positive correlation between the initial infectious dose and degree of immune responses. Mozambique tilapia initiated a strong immune protection by direct exposure with even a small number of parasites (e.g. 300 theronts per fish). Moreover, as the result of the protein analysis, we identified 28 kD proteins that could be responsible for the immobilizing antigen.

An investigation was conducted into the parasitic infection of an indigenous cichlid, Oreochromis mossambicus, collected seasonally from the Nwanedi-Luphephe dams of the Limpopo River System from July 2007 to April 2009. Of 157 host specimens examined, 115 (73.25%) were infected by at least one gill parasite. In all, 1565 monogenean specimens were collected, belonging to five different species and two genera: Cichlidogyrus (C. halli, C. sclerosus, C. tilapiae and C. dossoui) and Scutogyrus (S. longicornis). Infracommunities were poor, with only 27 (17.20%) hosts harbouring four of the five species observed. Cichlidogyrus halli was the dominant species, with a prevalence of 73.25%. Prevalence values for each of the other four species were less than 50%. The mean intensities for each of the five species were low ( < 8 parasites/host). The parasite abundance and intensity levels were not influenced by either the sex or the size of the host. The abundance of all parasite species except for S. longicornis exhibited seasonal fluctuations, reaching peaks in winter and summer. The spatial distribution of each parasite was studied on different regions of the gill, and positive associations among some species were revealed.

Centrocestusformosanus is a zoonotic trematode from Asia and has been mainly associated as cause of death of cultured fish. To identify pathogen trematode species in tilapia fry (Oreochromis niloticus) and to determine mollusks hosting these parasites, freshwater mollusks were collected from tilapia cultured ponds and experimental infections were carried out with tilapia fries and different mollusk species. A total of 907 freshwater mollusks were obtained from tilapia ponds and were identified to species level, four gastropods and one bivalve were determined: Melania tuberculata, Melanoides turricula, Pomacea flagellata, Haitia cubensis and Anodontiles luteola. For the first time, the presence of M. turricula and H. cubensis are reported in Costa Rica. Seven morphotypes of cercariae (Xifiodiocercaria, Equinostoma, Oftalmocercaria, Parapleurolofocercus, Cistocerca, Furcocercaria and Leptocercaria) parasitizing all five species of mollusks were found, all of distome type. Experimental exposure of tilapia fry to M. tuberculata demonstrated that the parapleurolofocercus morphotype found in the mollusk is in accordance with the finding of C. formosanus in tilapia fry. An abundance and mean intensity of 1018-1027 digeneans per gill in each exposed fish was determined. Centrocestus formosanus is reported for the first time in Costa Rica, for which the primary and secondary intermediate hosts were also determined.

A total of 100 Tilapia fish samples were collected from brackish water (n = 50) and fresh water (n = 50) resources, Northern Egypt, and examined for heterophyid encysted metacercariae (EMC) during the period from August 2007 to July 2008. The overall prevalence of infection was 32%; 22% for brackish water fish and 42% for fresh water fish. Significant differences in parasite occurrence among body regions were found, with muscles of the tail and caudal third being highly affected (93.4%) followed by middle third (84.3%) and anterior third (75%), while the head region had the lowest infection (21.9%). The prevalence was highest in summer season (46.4%) followed by spring (37.5%) and autumn (27.3%), and was lowest in winter (15.4%). The prevalence of infection decreased as fish size increased. Adult heterophyids, Heterophyes heterophyes, Heterophyes aequalis, Pygidiopsis genata, Haplorchis yokogawai, and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) ascolonga were recovered from EMC-feed puppies. Eggs of heterophyid type were detected in 10 (13.3%) out of 75 human stool specimens from local residents. An association exists between being a female (odd ratio [OR] 1.59 and 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.42-6.04), a fisherman (OR 1.39 [95% CI 0.26-7.48]), a housewife (OR 1.24 [95% CI 0.29-6.28]), 15-45 years old (OR 2.22 [95% CI 0.58-8.53]), or aged 5-14 years (OR 1.29 [95% CI 0.30-5.58]) and heterophyid infection. Measures should be implemented to reduce the risk of transmission of heterophyids to human and fish-eating animals.

Factors affecting prevalence and site preferences of heterophyid metacercariae (MC) were investigated in this study. A total of 173 specimens of a freshwater fish, Tilapia zilli were collected during autumn 2008, winter 2009 and summer 2009, from Ismailia fresh water canal, Egypt. Results showed that the total prevalence of heterophyid MC was 95.37%. The heterophyid MC consisted of Haplorchis yokogawi (47.4%), Pygidiopsis genata (21.4%), and Phagicola ascolonga (93.64%). H. yokogawi MC was detected in striated muscles, P. ascolonga in liver and kidney while, P. genata was detected in muscles, liver and kidney. The aggregation indices showed that all MC were aggregated and the P. genata was the most highly aggregated followed by H. yokogawi and then P. ascolonga. Responses of the heterophyid MC to host sex, weight and season greatly varied according to species of MC. Different responses of interaction for heterophyid MC intensity were found by GLIM analysis and this variation dependant on the type of infection (single or mixed infections). Factors affecting site preference of heterophid MC infection were discussed and further studies in other locations are required to examine the factors affecting site preference.

Encysted metacercariae (EMC) from seven trematod-zoonotic parasites were exposed to different temperature mechanisms. Boiling of the infected fishes was sufficient to kill the EMC, frying of fishes for five minutes was quite sufficient to inhibit the viability of EMC, but frying for 10 minutes killed all EMC. Grilling of infected Tilapia zillii was sufficient to kill EMC after 10 minutes; however five minutes were sufficient only to kill EMC in Clarias gariepinus. Regarding chilling at 5 degrees C, T. zillii EMC showed variation in response. Complete loss of viability of Prohemistomatidae EMC was achieved after 14 days, for Haplorchidae after 11 days, for Diplostomatidae after 12 days, while Clinostomatidae EMC required 15 days. For Cl. gariepinus, Bagrus bajad and Chrysichthys auratus achieved results were similar to those for T. zillii but with fewer days of withstanding chilling. The EMC infecting Tilapia lost their viability by freezing at -5 degrees C & -10 degrees k for Prohemistomatidae after 48 & 40 hours, for Diplostomatidae after 24 & 16 hours and for Clinostomatidae cysts after 48 &32 hours respectively. In infected Clarias gariepinus, Bagrus bajad and Chrysichthys auratus the EMC lost their viability by fireezing at -5 degrees C & -10 degrees C for periods shorter than those of Tilapia sp.

A total of 410 Tilapia zillii, 70 Clarias gariepinus, 30 Bagrus bajad and 15 Chlrysichthys auratus fishes were collected from different water bodies in Qualyobia Governorate. Microscopic examination of samples showed infection in muscles and head region (gills & branchial cavity) with encysted metacercariae in 91.7% of T. zillii, 82.85% of Cl. gariepinus, 70% of B. bajad and 86.66% of Ch. auratus. The highest distribution of metacercarial infection among the T. zillii was in the muscles of posterior third and tail followed by the middle third, anterior third and head region (gills & branchial cavity) while the highest distribution of metacercarial infection among Cl. gariepinus was in the middle third muscles followed by the posterior third, anterior third and lastly in the head region. The highest metacercarial infection among B. bajad and Ch. auratus fish was in the posterior third muscles and branchial cavity respectively. The taxonomic morphology of the encysted metacercariae and the excysted ones was given

The parasitic ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (Ich) is one of the most important protozoan pathogens of freshwater fish worldwide. Examination of 4 species of Tilapia from the River Nile recorded highest rate infection in Oreochromis niloticus, followed by Oreochromis aureus, Sarotherodon galilaeus and Tilapia zilli. By electron microscopy, apoptotic cells collected from Tilapia species infected with "Ich" showed an aggregation on the apical and basal parts of the ciliated and non-ciliated endothelial lining the gill epithelium. Ultrastructural analysis showed that the chromatin in the liver of Ich-infected O. niloticus was highly condensed and massed at the center of the nucleus. UItrastructural analysis of "Ich" infected O. aureus showed that the nuclear membrane of hepatocytes was also shrunken. In S. galilaeus, chromatin was highly condensed, fragmented and massed at the nuclear center, occasionally forming crescent-shaped masses. Ultrastructural of O. niloticus spleen showed that the macrophage number was comparatively high as compared to control. In O. aureus, damaged splenic cell number did not change, and phagocytic capacity of macrophages was not very high. In Ich-infected S. galilaeus, a marked decrease in splenic cells number was seen. Analysis of DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis on gill, liver and spleen cells showed a ladder of DNA fragments in multiple of 180bp in length, pointing to an internucleosomal DNA cleavage.

The infection status with heterophyids in the second intermediate host fish obtained from brackish and fresh water resources in Dakahlia governorate, northern Egypt was investigated. Encysted metacercariae (EMC) in the fish species Mugil cephalus, Mugil capito, Mugil auratus, Tilapia nilotica, and Tilapia zilli from brackish water and T. nilotica and T. zilli from fresh water were isolated by artificial digestion method and identified by microscopic examination. Morphometric analysis of EMC isolated from these fishes identified seven phenotypically distinct groups. No significant morphologic differences were detected between EMC of the same group obtained from different fish species. The adult flukes recovered from seven groups of puppies separately infected with distinct EMC groups were compatible with seven species belong to six genera of Heterophyidae namely Heterophyes heterophyes, Heterophyes aequalis, Pygidiopsis genata, Haplorchis yokogawi, Prohemostomum vivax, Phagicola ascolonga, and Stictodora tridactyla. EMC of these seven heterophyid species were detected in all examined brackish water fishes. On the other hand, only EMC of P. genata, H. yokogawi, and P. ascolonga were detected in fresh water fishes, T. nilotica and T. zilli. These results indicate that heterophyid infections occur in brackish and fresh water fishes in northern Egypt, where the parasites are indigenous.

The humoral immune response of the tilapia Oreochromis niloticus was evaluated using a direct ELISA. Serum was tested from fish infected with Cichlidogyrus spp. (Monogenea) and from fish injected intraperitoneally with the Cichlidogyrus spp. antigenic extract, i.e., 150 microl of the Cichlidogyrus spp. saline extract diluted in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) (1:1) were inoculated intraperitoneally at day 0, followed by 2 dosages of 50 microl of the same Cichlidogyrus spp. saline extract diluted in Freund's incomplete adjuvant (FIA) (1:1) at weeks 2 and 4, respectively. The humoral response was also evaluated by the double immunodiffusion test (DID) and by serum protein and total immunoglobulin (Ig) determinations. The IgM OD values in the hyperimmune fish were significantly higher than in the infected and uninfected fish groups. In the DID test, a precipitation (antigen-antibody) band was observed between the Cichlidogyrus spp. saline extract and hyperimmune sera, but not with the other groups. Increases in serum protein concentration and total Igs were observed in the immunized fish at weeks 2 and 10 postinjection. Results from this study suggest that tilapia is capable of producing an induced humoral immune response against an antigenic extract of Cichlidogyrus spp.

The prevalence of fish-borne zoonotic trematode (FZT) metacercariae was investigated in fish farmed by rural households in Nghe An Province, located in northern Vietnam. In total, 716 fish, including tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and 6 carp species, i.e., grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), silver carp (Hypophthalmychthys molitrix), and roha (Labeo rohita), collected from 53 fish farms were examined. The overall prevalence of FZT metacercariae was 44.6%, ranging from 12.5% to 61.0% in fish species collected from grow-out ponds, which are the production system for growing fish from fingerling size to market size. The overall prevalence was 43.6% in fingerlings cultured in nurseries, ranging from 7.4% to 62.8% for different fish species. The FZT species recovered were heterophyids and echinostomatids and included Haplorchis pumilio, H. taichui, H. yokogawai, Centrocestus formosanus, Stellantchas musfalcatus, and Echinochasmus japonicus, all of which are intestinal flukes in humans, other mammals, and birds. This is the first report of H. yokogawai and E. japonicus in fish in Vietnam, and the first record for S. falcatus in northern Vietnam. Although a previous cross-sectional survey of the people living in these fish farm households revealed a very low prevalence of FZTs (< 1%), our results demonstrate that intestinal flukes are common in farmed fish in this area, suggesting that reservoir hosts such as dogs, cats, and pigs are more important in sustaining the life cycles of these flukes in fish farms than human hosts. This has implications for the effectiveness of control programs focused mainly on treatment of humans.

Obviously, the present study reports the coccidian parasite so-called Goussia cichlidarum for the first time in Egypt. Altogether, 25 exogenous stages were clearly distinguished from specimens of naturally infected fishes of Oreochromis niloticus, O. auraeus, and Tilapia zillii from different locations. The total prevalence of infection was about 41%. Mostly, infected fish grossly seemed with a healthy body, although severe lesions have been detected microscopically in massive infection. Portions of thick wall swim bladder have been placed in vitro. The released parasitic stages have been photographed, sketched, measured, described, and compared with previously described species. Oocysts, sporocysts, and sporozoites have also been differentiated morphologically and morphometrically. Maturity stages of sporozoites containing sporocysts within either an oocyst or those released and sporulated outside the oocyst were considerably discernible. In addition, endogenous stages have also been investigated in histological sections included gamonts, merozoites, oocysts, and different stages of sporozoites.

The encysted metacercariae (EMC) of heterophyids in the fish species; Mugil caphalus, M. capito, M. auratus, Oreochromis n. niloticus (=Tilapia nilotica), and Tilapia zillii trapped brackish and fresh water fishes were isolated by the artificial digestion method and identified. The EMC by morphometric analysis proved to be seven phenotypical distinct types. Cross-matched seven groups of clean laboratory bred puppies each was experimentally infected with a distinct EMC type. The recovered adult flukes were compatible to seven species of six genera of family Heterophyidae. These were Heterophyes heterophyes, H. aequalis, Pygidiopsis genata, Haplorchis yokogawai, Prohemostomumn vivax, Phagicola sp. and Stictodora sp. The EMC of the seven heterophyids were recovered from all the brackish water fishes, M. caphalus, M. capito, M. auratus, O. niloticus and T. zillii. On the other hand, the EMC of P. genata, Haplorchis yokogawai and Phagicola sp. were recovered only from the fresh water fish, O. niloticus and T. zillii. All the EMC was re-described and photographed.

The discovery of Transversotrema patialense cercariae in an aquarium harboring tropical fish triggered the present study. The purpose was to estimate the potential range of infection of local freshwater and fishpond populations by T. patialense. Experimental infection of T. patialense differed among 3 species employed: 76.5% for Tilapia zillii, 37.8% for Gambusia affinis, and none for 2 varieties of Cyprinus carpio. These patterns of infectivity are different from those published previously for T. patialense infections, and they may be attributed to the origin of the fish (temperate water vs. tropical and subtropical waters) and the size of their scales. In G. affinis, but not in the other species, worm load and fish length were closely related, and the left side harbored heavier worm burdens than the right side. Taken together, these results suggest that imported T. patialense may spread to various indigenous natural and cultured fish populations, with ensuing potential harm to these populations.

A study of Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus), O. aureus (Steindachner), Sarotherodon caudomarginatus (Boulenger), S. galilaeus (Linnaeus) and S. galilaeus sanagaensis (Thys van den Audenaerde) (Teleostei, Cichlidae) from different locations in Africa (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea, Niger and Senegal) revealed the presence of 11 species of monogenean gill parasites. Four, belonging to Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 and considered as new species, are described: C. rognoni n. sp., C. douellouae n. sp., C. giostrai n. sp. and C. njinei n. sp. They are distinguished by the shape and/or size of the sclerotised parts of the haptoral and copulatory complexes. C. thurstonae Ergens, 1981 from O. niloticus is redescribed.

Tilapia cabrae Boulenger, 1899, a cichlid fish from coastal lowlands of the Republic of Congo (Africa), was examined for gill parasites. Four new species of the Monogenea were found, all belonging to Cichlidogyrus (Ancyrocephalidae): C. berradae sp. n., C. revesati sp. n., C. legendrei sp. n., and C. lemoallei sp. n. A possible relationship between the relative size of haptoral sclerites (i.e., uncinuli compared to gripi) and microhabitat selection in the studied host-parasite model is discussed.

A Myxobolus heterospora (Baker, 1963) infection was found in 2 euryhaline tilapia species, Sarotherodon melanotheron melanotheron (Rüppel, 1853) and Tilapia zillii (Gervais, 1852), from a brackish water lake, Lake Nokoué (Benin, West Africa). The histology and ultrastructure of different levels of infection in intestinal connective tissues and wall tissues is described. A total of 391 S. melanotheron melanotheron and 222 T. zillii were examined from October 1987 to October 1989. M. heterospora was found throughout the study period, with a total prevalence of 42.19 and 26.57% for S. melanotheron melanotheron and T. zillii respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in occurrence as a function of season in S. melanotheron melanotheron but not in T. zilli, and there was a significant difference for size and sex in the former and for sex in the latter. M. heterospora induces total destruction of the intestine structure and probably leads to osmoregulatory disturbance. Further investigations of this myxosporean infection are necessary to determine its real effect on the host, since host survival and osmoregulatory rate have not yet been assessed.

The surface topography of Astiotrema impletum (Looss, 1899) Looss, 1900, from the white tilapia Oreochromis niloticus showed regional variations in the distribution of spines allover the body. The spines are abundant on the tegument of the head region, and the outer border of the ventral sucker. No spines were observed on the genital pore, on the inner rim of both the oral and ventral suckers, and on the tegumental surface of the posterior extremity of the body where the excretory pore is located. The sensory papillae are dome-shaped and arranged in a bilateral symmetrical pattern on both the oral and ventral suckers. They are also concentrated on the posterior extremity of the body. Some of these papillae possess a short knob-like process, while others have no process. Gland duct-like apertures were observed in four regions of the body: on the tegument covering the anterior extremity of the oral sucker, on the inner rim of the ventral sucker, in the region close to the genital aperture and in the region lying anterior to the excretory pore. The possible functions of the spines, sensory papillae, and gland duct-like apertures were discussed.

The parasitic fauna of two fish species, namely gill-netted samples of 652 Oreochromis leucostictus and 448 Tilapia zillii from Lake Naivasha and Oloidien Bay was investigated during the period from the end of October 1995 to September 1996. Five larval helminth parasites were recovered including the nematode, Contracaecum sp., the acanthocephalan Polyacanthorhynchus kenyensis, the digenetic trematode, Clinostomum sp. and two cestodes, Amirthalingamia sp. and Cyclustera sp. Both prevalence and intensity of the infection of these helminths increased in larger sized fish, whereas male fish were more heavily infected than females. No seasonality in infection level were observed. The health status of both fish species remained unaffected, although O. leucostictus from Oloidien Bay which harboured heavy infections of Contracaecum exhibited stuntedness and the lack of fatty deposits around the digestive caecum.

It is described the histopathology of the infection of Tilapia rendalli (Osteichthyes, Perciformes, Cichlidae) and Hypostomus regani (Osteichthyes, Siluriformes, Loricariidae) by lasidium larvae of Anodontites trapesialis (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Mycetopodidae). The larvae were encysted within the epidermis of the host, being surrounded by a thin hyaline membrane, 3-6 microm thick, of parasite origin. A proliferative host cell reaction did not occur. The histopathology of the infection shows that the lesions induced by the parasites are minimal. However, the numerous small lesions produced by the release of the larvae may provide optimal conditions for the infection by opportunistic pathogens, namely fungus, which may eventually cause the death of the host.
