Background: A retrotransposon HORT1 in the promoter of the anthocyanin activator gene PeMYB11, microRNA858 (miR858) that targets PeMYB11, and a repressor PeMYBx have been implicated in pigmentation patterning diversity of harlequin Phalaenopsis orchids. However, the interrelationship among them remains to be elucidated., Results: To understand how these factors interact to generate anthocyanin spots in Phalaenopsis, we successfully developed a mathematical model based on the known reaction-diffusion system to simulate their interplay and refined the conceptual biological model. Intriguingly, the expression of both PeMYBx and PeMYB11 were in phase for purple spot formation, even though they showed adverse effects on anthocyanin accumulations. An increase in the self-activation rate of PeMYB11 resulted in the increased size of purple spots, but no effects on spot fusion. Decreased degradation rate of miR858 in the purple regions, led to disruption of the formation of spotted pigmentation patterning and a full-red pigmentation pattern. Significantly, the reduced miR858 level promotes the fusion of large dark purple dots induced by the solo-LTR of HORT1, eventually generating the purple patches. In addition, the spatially heterogeneous insertion of HORT1 caused by the remnant solo-LTR of HORT1 derived from random homologous unequal recombination of HORT1 in individual cells of floral organs could explain the diverse pigmentation patterning of harlequin Phalaenopsis., Conclusions: This devised model explains how HORT1 and miR858 regulate the formation of the pigmentation patterning and holds great promise for developing efficient and innovative approaches to breeding harlequin Phalaenopsis orchids., (© 2024. The replacement of humans by machines has gradually become a technological trend. In this study, a dual robotic arm was used in the belt conveyor operation system to track the screw and nut assembly using mutual visual tracking and positioning technology. Moreover, this study simulated the automatic assembly process using a dual robotic arm in a smart factory. An inverse kinematics operation was constructed using a geometric method to control the dual robotic arm to track the screw and nut assembly on the conveyor belt in real time using mutual visual tracking and positioning technology based on a single-lens charge-coupled device of a robotic arm. This study utilized a dual robotic arm to grab the screw and nut using fuzzy visual tracking control. After completing the grabbing of the screw and nut with tracking and positioning errors of 8%, the dual robotic arms continued to complete the assembly of the screw and nut. Therefore, through the establishment technology of mutual visual tracking and positioning of the dual robotic arm in this study, assembly tasks can be efficiently completed in related fields in the future.

Control of organic matter, nutrients and disinfection byproduct formation is a major challenge for the drinking water treatment plants on Matsu Islands, Taiwan, receiving source water from the eutrophic reservoirs. A pilot entrapped biomass reactor (EBR) system was installed as the pretreatment process to reduce organic and nitrogen contents into the drinking water treatment plant. The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and combination of preceding physical treatment (ultraviolet and ultrasound) on the treatment performance were further evaluated. The results showed that the EBR system achieved higher than 81%, 35%, 12% and 46% of reduction in chlorophyll a (Chl a), total COD (TCOD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total nitrogen (TN), respectively under varied influent concentrations. The treatment performance was not significantly influenced by HRT and presence/absence of physical pretreatment and the effluent water quality was stable; however, removal efficiencies and removal rates of Chl a, TCOD and DOC showed strong correlation with their influent concentrations. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy identified fulvic-like and humic-like substances as the two major components of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the reservoir, and decreased intensity of the major peaks in effluent EEM fluorescence spectra suggested the effective removal of DOM without production of additional amount of soluble microbial products in the EBR. Through the treatment by EBR, about 10% of reduction of total trihalomethane formation potential for the effluent could also be achieved. Activating transcription factor 2 (ATF2) is a member of the leucine zipper family of DNA-binding proteins and is widely distributed in tissues including the liver, lung, spleen, and kidney. Like c-Jun and c-Fos, ATF2 responds to stress-related stimuli and may thereby influence cell proliferation, inflammation, apoptosis, oncogenesis, neurological development and function, and skeletal remodeling. Recent studies clarify the regulatory role of ATF2 in inflammation and describe potential inhibitors of this protein. In this paper, we summarize the properties and functions of ATF2 and explore potential applications of ATF2 inhibitors as tools for research and for the development of immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory drugs.

This paper presents a highly sensitive oxygen sensor that comprises an optical fiber coated at one end with platinum(II) meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (PtTFPP) and PtTFPP entrapped core-shell silica nanoparticles embedded in an n-octyltriethoxysilane (Octyl-triEOS)/tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS) composite xerogel. The sensitivity of the optical oxygen sensor is quantified in terms of the ratio I(0)/I(100), where I(0) and I(100) represent the detected fluorescence intensities in pure nitrogen and pure oxygen environments, respectively. The experimental results show that the oxygen sensor has a sensitivity (I(0)/I(100)) of 166. The response time was 1.3s when switching from pure nitrogen to pure oxygen, and 18.6s when switching in the reverse direction. The experimental results show that compared to oxygen sensors based on PtTFPP, PtOEP, or Ru(dpp)(3)(2+) dyes, the proposed optical fiber oxygen sensor has the highest sensitivity. In addition to the increased surface area per unit mass of the sensing surface, the dye entrapped in the core of silica nanoparticles also increases the sensitivity because a substantial number of aerial oxygen molecules penetrate the porous silica shell.
