Purpose: This paper investigates the biomechanical benefits of using hybrid constructs that combine cannulated screws with tension band wiring (TBW) cerclage compared to cannulated screws with anterior Variable Angle locking neutralisation plates (VA LNP). These enhancements can bear heavier loads and maintain the repaired patella's integrity, in contrast to traditional methods., Method: Eighteen fresh-frozen human cadaver patellae were carefully fractured transversely at their midpoints using a saw. They were then divided into two groups of nine for subsequent utilisation. Fixation methods included Cannulated Screw Fixation added with either TBW or VA LNP Fixation Technique. Cyclic loading simulations (500 cycles) were conducted to mimic knee motion, tracking fracture displacement with Optotrak. After that, the constructs were secured over a servo-hydraulic testing machine to determine the load-to-failure on axial mode., Results: The average fracture displacement for the anterior neutralisation plate group was 0.09 ± 0.12 mm, compared to 0.77 ± 0.54 mm for the tension band wiring with cannulated screw group after 500 cyclic loading. This result is statistically significant ( p  = 0.004). The anterior neutralisation plate group exhibited a mean load-to-failure of 1359 ± 21.53 N, whereas the tension band wiring group showed 780.1 ± 22.62 N, resulting in a significant difference between the groups ( p  = 0.007)., Conclusion: This research highlights the superior biomechanical advantage of VA LNP over TBW for treating simple transverse patella fractures with two cannulated screws. Adhesive bonding plays a pivotal role in structural connections, yet the bonding strength is notably affected by the presence of pore defects. However, the invisibility of interior pores severely poses a challenge to understanding their influence on tensile failure behaviors under loading. In this study, we present a pioneering investigation into the real-time micro-failure mechanisms of adhesively bonded structures using in situ X-ray micro-CT. Moreover, the high-precision finite element analysis (FEA) of stress distribution is realized by establishing the real adhesive layer model based on micro-CT slices. The findings unveil that pores induce stress concentration within the adhesive layer during the tensile process, with stress levels significantly contingent upon pore sizes rather than their specific shapes. Consequently, larger pores initiate and propagate cracks along their paths, ultimately culminating in the failure of adhesively bonded structures. These outcomes serve as a significant stride in elucidating how pore defects affect the bonding performance of adhesively bonded structures, offering invaluable insights into their mechanisms.

We test the hypothesis that loading conditions affect the statistical features of crackling noise accompanying the failure of porous rocks by performing discrete element simulations of the tensile failure of model rocks and comparing the results to those of compressive simulations of the same samples. Cylindrical samples are constructed by sedimenting randomly sized spherical particles connected by beam elements representing the cementation of granules. Under a slowly increasing external tensile load, the cohesive contacts between particles break in bursts whose size fluctuates over a broad range. Close to failure breaking avalanches are found to localize on a highly stressed region where the catastrophic avalanche is triggered and the specimen breaks apart along a spanning crack. The fracture plane has a random position and orientation falling most likely close to the centre of the specimen perpendicular to the load direction. In spite of the strongly different strengths, degrees of 'brittleness' and spatial structure of damage of tensile and compressive failure of model rocks, our calculations revealed that the size, energy and duration of avalanches, and the waiting time between consecutive events all obey scale-free statistics with power law exponents which agree within their error bars in the two loading cases., Competing Interests: We declare we have no competing interests., (© 2023 The Authors.)

Adhesive joints possess a number of advantages over traditional joining methods and are widely used in composite structures. Conventional non-destructive examination techniques do not readily reveal joint degradation before the formation of explicit defects. Embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors and the resistance of carbon nanotube (CNT)-doped conductive joints have been proposed to monitor the structural integrity of adhesive joints. Both techniques will be employed and compared in the current work to monitor damage development in adhesive joints under tensile and cyclic fatigue loading. Most of the previous works took measurements under an applied load, which by itself will affect the monitoring signals without the presence of any damage. Moreover, most FBG works primarily relied on the peak shifting phenomenon for sensing. Degradation of adhesive and inter-facial defects will lead to non-uniform strain that may chirp the FBG spectrum, causing complications in the peak shifting measurement. In view of the above shortfalls, measurements are made at some low and fixed loads to preclude any unwanted effect due to the applied load. The whole FBG spectrum, instead of a single peak, will be used, and a quantitative parameter to describe spectrum changes is proposed for monitoring purposes. The extent of damage is revealed by a fluorescent penetrant and correlated with the monitoring signals. With these refined techniques, we hope to shed some light on the relative merits and limitations of the two techniques.

Adhesive joints in composite structures are subject to degradation by elevated temperature and moisture. Moisture absorption leads to swelling, plasticization, weakening of the interface, interfacial defects/cracking and reduction in strength. Moisture and material degradation before the formation of defects are not readily revealed by conventional non-destructive examination techniques. Embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors can reflect the swelling strain in adhesive joints and offer an economical alternative for on-line monitoring of moisture absorption under hygrothermal aging. Most of the available works relied on the peak shifting phenomenon for sensing. Degradation of adhesive and interfacial defects will lead to non-uniform strain that may chirp the FBG spectrum, causing complications in the peak shifting measurement. It is reasoned that the full spectral responses may be more revealing regarding the joint's integrity. Studies on this aspect are still lacking. In this work, single-lap joint composite specimens with embedded FBGs are soaked in 60 °C water for 30 days. Spectrum evolution during this period and subsequent tensile and fatigue failure has been studied to shed some light on the possible use of the full spectral response to monitor the development of hygrothermal degradation.

Essentially, every failure of a short fiber reinforced composite (SFRC) under tension is induced from a matrix failure, the prediction of which is of fundamental importance. This can be achieved only when the homogenized stresses of the matrix are converted into true values in terms of stress concentration factors (SCFs) of the matrix in an SFRC. Such an SCF cannot be determined in the classical way. In this paper, a closed-form formula for the longitudinal tensile SCF in the SFRC is derived from the matrix stresses determined through an elastic approach. The other directional SCFs in an SFRC are the same as those in a continuous fiber composite already available. A bridging model was used to calculate the homogenized stresses explicitly, and a failure prediction of the SFRC with arbitrary fiber aspect ratio and fiber content was made using only the original constituent strength data. Results showed that the volume fraction, the aspect ratio, and the orientation of the fiber all have significant effect on the tensile strength of an SFRC. In a certain range, the tensile strength of an SFRC increases with the increase in fiber aspect ratio and fiber volume content, and the strength of the oriented short fiber is higher than that of the random short fiber arrangement. Good correlations between the predicted and the available measured strengths for a number of SFRCs show the capability of the present method.

Herein, the stress-state dependence of fracture entropy for a polyamide 6 material is investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. Although previous research suggests that a constant entropy increase can be universally applied for the definition of material fracture, the dependence of stress triaxiality has not yet been discussed. In this study, entropy values are evaluated by molecular dynamics simulations with varied combined stress states. The calculation is implemented using the 570,000 all-atom model. Similar entropy values are obtained independently of stress triaxiality. This study also reveals the relationship between material damage, which is correlated with void size, and the entropy value.

The addition of alkali-resistant glass fiber to concrete effectively suppresses the damage evolution such as microcrack initiation, expansion, and nucleation and inhibits the development and penetration of microcracks, which is very important for the long-term stability and safety of concrete structures. We conducted indoor flat tensile tests to determine the occurrence and development of cracks in alkali-resistant glass fiber reinforced concrete (AR-GFRC). The composite material theory and Krajcinovic vector damage theory were used to correct the quantitative expressions of the fiber discontinuity and the elastic modulus of the concrete. The Weibull distribution function was used and an equation describing the damage evolution of the AR-GFRC was derived. The constitutive equation was validated using numerical parameter calculations based on the elastic modulus, the fiber content, and a performance test of polypropylene fiber. The results showed that the tensile strength and peak strength of the specimen were highest at a concrete fiber content of 1%. The changes in the macroscopic stress-strain curve of the AR-GFRC were determined and characterized by the model. The results of this study provide theoretical support and reference data to ensure safety and reliability for practical concrete engineering.

Introduction: This study aims to investigate the strength characteristics of fiber composites under uniaxial tensile stress., Methods: A tensile failure finite element model based on fracture mechanics was built for fiber composites. The principal stress concentration-release-transfer evolution and the crack propagation of the composites under the conditions of equal single fiber width, unequal quantity, and equal total fiber width and unequal quantity were discussed., Results: The tensile strength of the composites increased with fiber quantity when the width of each single fiber was equal., Conclusions: The tensile strength of the composites increased with fiber quantity when the total width of the composite fiber was equal.

A self-developed rotary multi-cutter device cuts stainless steel wire ropes into segments to fabricate twisted wires. Stainless steel porous twisted wire materials (PTWMs) with a spatial composite intertexture structure are produced by the compaction and subsequent vacuum solid-phase sintering of twisted wires. The stainless steel PTWMs show two types of typical uniaxial tensile failure modes, i.e. , a 45° angle fracture mode and an auxetic failure mode (the PTWMs expand along the direction perpendicular to the tension). The effects of the sintering parameters, porosities, wire diameters, and sampling direction on the tensile properties of the PTWMs are carefully investigated. By increasing the sintering temperature from 1130 °C to 1330 °C, the tensile strength of the PTWMs with 70% target porosity increased from 7.7 MPa to 28.6 MPa and the total failure goes down to 50%. When increasing the sintering time from 90 min to 150 min, the tensile strength increases from 12.4 MPa to 19.1 MPa and the total failure elongation drops to 78.6%. The tensile strength of the PTWMs increases from 28.9 MPa to 112.7 MPa with decreasing porosity from 69.5% to 46.0%, and the total failure elongation also increases from 14.8% to 40.7%. The tensile strength and the failure strain of the PTWMs with fine wires are higher than those of the PTWMs with coarse wires under the same porosity. Sampling direction has a small influence on the tensile properties of the PTWMs.
