Mouse models are vital for assessing risk from environmental carcinogens, including ionizing radiation, yet the interspecies difference in the dose response precludes direct application of experimental evidence to humans. Herein, we take a mathematical approach to delineate the mechanism underlying the human-mouse difference in radiation-related cancer risk. We used a multistage carcinogenesis model assuming a mutational action of radiation to analyze previous data on cancer mortality in the Japanese atomic bomb survivors and in lifespan mouse experiments. Theoretically, the model predicted that exposure will chronologically shift the age-related increase in cancer risk forward by a period corresponding to the time in which the spontaneous mutational process generates the same mutational burden as that the exposure generates. This model appropriately fitted both human and mouse data and suggested a linear dose response for the time shift. The effect per dose decreased with increasing age at exposure similarly between humans and mice on a per-lifespan basis (0.72- and 0.71-fold, respectively, for every tenth lifetime). The time shift per dose was larger by two orders of magnitude in humans (7.8 and 0.046 years per Gy for humans and mice, respectively, when exposed at ~35% of their lifetime). The difference was mostly explained by the two orders of magnitude difference in spontaneous somatic mutation rates between the species plus the species-independent radiation-induced mutation rate. Trophoblast stem cells (TSCs), derived from the trophectoderm of the blastocyst, are used as an in vitro model to reveal the mechanisms underlying placentation in mammals. In humans, suitable culture conditions for TSC derivation have recently been established. The established human TSCs (hTSCs) differentiate efficiently toward two trophoblast subtypes: syncytiotrophoblasts (STBs) and extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs). However, the efficiency of differentiation is lower in macaque TSCs than in hTSCs. Here, we demonstrate that the activation of Wnt signaling downregulated the expression of inhibitory G protein and induced trophoblastic lineage switching to the STB progenitor state. The treatment of macaque TSCs with a GSK-3 inhibitor, CHIR99021, upregulated STB progenitor markers and enhanced proliferation. Under the Wnt signaling-activated conditions, macaque TSCs effectively differentiated to STBs upon dbcAMP and forskolin treatment. RNA-seq analyses revealed the downregulation of inhibitory G protein, which may make macaque TSCs responsive to forskolin. Interestingly, this lineage switching appeared to be reversible as the macaque TSCs lost responsiveness to forskolin upon the removal of CHIR99021. Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) is a diabetes mellitus subtype caused by a single gene. The detection rate of the responsible gene is 27% in the United Kingdom, indicating that the causative gene remains unknown in the majority of clinically diagnosed MODY cases. To improve the detection rate, we applied comprehensive genetic testing using whole exome sequencing (WES) followed by Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) and functional analyses. Twenty-one unrelated Japanese participants with MODY were enrolled in the study. To detect copy number variations (CNVs), WES was performed first, followed by MLPA analysis for participants who were negative on the basis of WES. Undetermined variants were analyzed according to their functional properties. WES identified 7 pathogenic and 3 novel likely pathogenic variants in the 21 participants. Functional analyses revealed that 1 in 3 variants was pathogenic. MLPA analysis applied to the remaining 13 undetermined samples identified 4 cases with pathogenic CNVs: 3 in HNF4A and 1 in HNF1B. Pathogenic variants were identified in 12 participants (12/21, 57.1%) - relatively high rate reported to date. Background:  We previously reported that normalization of motor evoked potential (MEP) monitoring amplitude by compound muscle action potential (CMAP) after peripheral nerve stimulation prevented the expression of anesthetic fade (AF), suggesting that AF might be due to reduced synaptic transfer in the neuromuscular junction., Methods:  We calculated the time at which AF began for each of craniotomy and spinal cord surgery, and examined whether AF was avoided by CMAP after peripheral nerve stimulation normalization in each. Similar studies were also made with respect to the upper and lower limb muscles., Results:  AF was observed in surgery lasting 160 minutes for craniotomy and 260 minutes or more for spinal surgery, and 195 minutes in the upper limb muscles and 135 minutes in the lower limb muscles. In all the series, AF could be avoided by CMAP after peripheral nerve stimulation normalization., Conclusion:  AF of MEP occurred in both craniotomy and spinal cord surgery, and it was also corrected by CMAP after peripheral nerve stimulation. AF is considered to be mainly due to a decrease in synaptic transfer of the neuromuscular junction due to the accumulation of propofol because of the avoidance by CMAP normalization. Primordial carbon delivered to the early earth by asteroids and meteorites provided a diverse source of extraterrestrial organics from pre-existing simple organic compounds, complex solar-irradiated macromolecules, and macromolecules from extended hydrothermal processing. Surface regolith collected by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft from the carbon-rich asteroid 162173 Ryugu present a unique opportunity to untangle the sources and processing history of carbonaceous matter. Here we show carbonaceous grains in Ryugu can be classified into three main populations defined by spectral shape: Highly aromatic (HA), Alkyl-Aromatic (AA), and IOM-like (IL). These carbon populations may be related to primordial chemistry, since C and N isotopic compositions vary between the three groups. Diffuse carbon is occasionally dominated by molecular carbonate preferentially associated with coarse-grained phyllosilicate minerals. Compared to related carbonaceous meteorites, the greater diversity of organic functional chemistry in Ryugu indicate the pristine condition of these asteroid samples., (© 2024. Interaction of mast cells (MCs) with fibroblasts is essential for MC maturation within tissue microenvironments, although the underlying mechanism is incompletely understood. Through a phenotypic screening of >30 mouse lines deficient in lipid-related genes, we found that deletion of the lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) receptor LPA 1 , like that of the phospholipase PLA2G3, the prostaglandin D 2 (PGD 2 ) synthase L-PGDS, or the PGD 2 receptor DP1, impairs MC maturation and thereby anaphylaxis. Mechanistically, MC-secreted PLA2G3 acts on extracellular vesicles (EVs) to supply lysophospholipids, which are converted by fibroblast-derived autotaxin (ATX) to LPA. Fibroblast LPA 1 then integrates multiple pathways required for MC maturation by facilitating integrin-mediated MC-fibroblast adhesion, IL-33-ST2 signaling, L-PGDS-driven PGD 2 generation, and feedforward ATX-LPA 1 amplification. Defective MC maturation resulting from PLA2G3 deficiency is restored by supplementation with LPA 1 agonists or PLA2G3-modified EVs. Purpose: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) are commonly prescribed anti-diabetic medications with various beneficial effects; however, they have also been associated with ketoacidosis. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of SGLT2i-associated perioperative ketoacidosis (SAPKA) in surgical patients., Methods: We conducted a multicenter, prospective cohort study across 16 centers in Japan, enrolling surgical patients with diabetes who were prescribed SGLT2is between January 2021 and August 2022. Patients were monitored until the third postoperative day to screen for SAPKA, defined as urine ketone positivity with a blood pH of < 7.30 and HCO 3 level ≤ 18.0 mEq/L, excluding cases of respiratory acidosis., Results: In total, 759 of the 762 evaluated patients were included in the final analysis. Among these, three patients (0.40%) had urine ketones with a blood pH of < 7.30; however, blood gas analysis revealed respiratory acidosis in all three, and none of them was considered to have SAPKA. The estimated incidence of SGLT2i-associated postoperative ketoacidosis was 0% (95% confidence interval, 0%-0.4%)., Conclusions: The observed incidence of SAPKA in our general surgical population was lower than expected. Rationale: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the last trump card for severe respiratory failure. The main complications of ECMO are bleeding and thrombosis, both of which can be life-threatening. Large blood clots can cause central airway obstruction (CAO) during ECMO, and CAO should be removed as soon as possible because of asphyxiation. However, there is no comprehensive reports on its frequency and management. The purpose of this study is to share therapeutic experiences for rare and serious conditions and provide valuable insights., Patient Concerns: We report 3 patients placed on ECMO for severe respiratory failure., Diagnosis: CAO due to large blood clots occurred during ECMO in all 3 patients., Interventions: Large blood clots were removed using flexible bronchoscopy, grasping forceps, and net retrieval devices in all 3 patients., Outcomes: In all 3 patients, large blood clots were removed multiple times during ECMO. The patients' respiratory conditions improved and they were eventually weaned off the ECMO., Lessons: CAO due to large blood clots during ECMO is rare. The frequency of CAO requiring bronchoscopic removal was estimated to be approximately 1,5%. When this occurs, clots should be removed as soon as possible. Background: The optimal subsequent treatment strategy for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC) after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) and consolidative durvalumab therapy remains unknown. We aimed to determine the optimal subsequent treatment strategy for this clinical population., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 523 consecutive patients with LA-NSCLC treated with CRT and analyzed the treatment outcomes of subsequent therapy after progression following CRT and consolidative durvalumab therapy. Patients who received tyrosine kinase inhibitors as subsequent therapy were excluded., Results: Out of 122 patients who received subsequent chemotherapy, 55% underwent platinum-based, 25% non-platinum-based, and 20% immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-containing therapies. In the platinum-based group, patients with a durvalumab-progression-free survival (Dur-PFS) ≥ 1 year had a significantly longer median subsequent therapy-PFS (SubTx-PFS) than those with Dur-PFS < 1 year (13.2 months vs. 4.7 months; hazard ratio, 0.45; 95% confidence interval, 0.21-0.97; P = .04). Furthermore, among patients receiving non-platinum-based chemotherapy, the median SubTx-PFS was longer in the combined with angiogenesis inhibitor group than in the without group, although the difference was not statistically significant. No significant difference of SubTx-PFS was observed between the reason for durvalumab discontinuation and the outcomes of ICI-containing therapy., Conclusion: In clinical practice, platinum-based chemotherapy rechallenge is frequently employed following progression subsequent to CRT and consolidative durvalumab therapy for LA-NSCLC. Optimal treatment strategies may consider Dur-PFS and angiogenesis inhibitor feasibility. The Planning and Acting Network for Low Dose Radiation Research in Japan (PLANET) was established in 2017 in response to the need for an all-Japan network of experts. It serves as an academic platform to propose strategies and facilitate collaboration to improve quantitative estimation of health risks from ionizing radiation at low-doses and low-dose-rates. PLANET established Working Group 1 (Dose-Rate Effects in Animal Experiments) to consolidate findings from animal experiments on dose-rate effects in carcinogenesis. Considering international trends in this field as well as the situation in Japan, PLANET updated its priority research areas for Japanese low-dose radiation research in 2023 to include (i) characterization of low-dose and low-dose-rate radiation risk, (ii) factors to be considered for individualization of radiation risk, (iii) biological mechanisms of low-dose and low-dose-rate radiation effects and (iv) integration of epidemiology and biology. In this context, PLANET established Working Group 2 (Dose and Dose-Rate Mapping for Radiation Risk Studies) to identify the range of doses and dose rates at which observable effects on different endpoints have been reported; Working Group 3 (Species- and Organ-Specific Dose-Rate Effects) to consider the relevance of stem cell dynamics in radiation carcinogenesis of different species and organs; and Working Group 4 (Research Mapping for Radiation-Related Carcinogenesis) to sort out relevant studies, including those on non-mutagenic effects, and to identify priority research areas. We report primordial aqueous alteration signatures in water-soluble organic molecules from the carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft of JAXA. Newly identified low-molecular-weight hydroxy acids (HO-R-COOH) and dicarboxylic acids (HOOC-R-COOH), such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, glyceric acid, oxalic acid, and succinic acid, are predominant in samples from the two touchdown locations at Ryugu. The quantitative and qualitative profiles for the hydrophilic molecules between the two sampling locations shows similar trends within the order of ppb (parts per billion) to ppm (parts per million). A wide variety of structural isomers, including α- and β-hydroxy acids, are observed among the hydrophilic molecules. We also identify pyruvic acid and dihydroxy and tricarboxylic acids, which are biochemically important intermediates relevant to molecular evolution, such as the primordial TCA (tricarboxylic acid) cycle. Here, we find evidence that the asteroid Ryugu samples underwent substantial aqueous alteration, as revealed by the presence of malonic acid during keto-enol tautomerism in the dicarboxylic acid profile. Background: Secondary carnitine deficiency in patients with anorexia nervosa has been rarely reported. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of carnitine deficiency in severely malnourished patients with eating disorders during refeeding and assess its potential adverse effects on treatment outcomes., Method: In a cohort study of 56 female inpatients with eating disorders at a single hospital from March 2010 to December 2020, we measured plasma free carnitine (FC) levels and compared to those of a healthy control group (n = 35). The patients were categorized into three groups based on FC levels: FC deficiency (FC< 20 µmol/L), FC pre-deficiency (20 µmol/L ≤ FC< 36 µmol/L), and FC normal (36 µmol/L ≤ FC)., Results: Upon admission, the patients had a median age of 26 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 21-35) and a median body mass index (BMI) of 13.8 kg/m 2 (IQR: 12.8-14.8). Carnitine deficiency or pre-deficiency was identified in 57% of the patients. Hypocarnitinemia was associated with a decline in hemoglobin levels during refeeding (odds ratio [OR]: 0.445; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.214-0.926, p = 0.03), BMI at admission (OR: 0.478; 95% CI: 0.217-0.874, p = 0.014), and moderate or greater hepatic impairment at admission (OR: 6.385; 95% CI: 1.170-40.833, p = 0.032)., Conclusions: Hypocarnitinemia, particularly in cases of severe undernutrition (BMI< 13 kg/m 2 at admission) was observed in severely malnourished patients with eating disorders during refeeding, a critical metabolic transition phase. Moderate or severe hepatic impairment at admission was considered a potential indicator of hypocarnitinemia. Although hypocarnitinemia was not associated with any apparent adverse events other than anemia during refeeding, the possibility that carnitine deficiency may be a risk factor for more serious complications during sudden increases in energy requirements associated with changes in physical status cannot be denied. This study reports two cases of rare symptomatic subsidence of titanium cages after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). First, an 82-year-old man underwent ACDF at C5/6 and C6/7 using two 6 mm height box-type titanium cages. On the 34th postoperative day, motor weakness occurred in the right upper limb, and CT showed that the cage at C5/6 had subsided 6 mm into the C6 vertebral body. On postoperative day 55, both cages were removed, and C6 corpectomy was performed. The C5-7 space was refixed with a mesh cage and plate. He was discharged home from the rehabilitation hospital three months later. Second, a 41-year-old man underwent ACDF at C5/6 and C6/7 using two 5 mm height box-type titanium cages. He fell violently on the 33rd postoperative day, causing pain from the neck to the left hand, weakness, and skillful movement disorder in the left hand, and CT showed that the cages at C5/6 and C6/7 had subsided by 7 mm and 6 mm, respectively. On the 65th postoperative day, both cages were removed by reoperation, and C6 and 7 corpectomy was performed. The space between C5 and T1 was refixed with a mesh cage and plate. He was discharged home two months later. Possible causes of titanium cage subsidence include osteoporosis, trauma, vertebral cortex damage by an operative procedure, and cage height of 6 mm or more. Introduction: The conventional method of placing transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) electrodes is just above the target brain area. However, this strategy for electrode placement often fails to improve motor function and modulate cortical excitability. We investigated the effects of optimized electrode placement to induce maximum electrical fields in the leg regions of both M1 and SMA, estimated by electric field simulations in the T1and T2-weighted MRI-based anatomical models, on motor performance and cortical excitability in healthy individuals., Methods: A total of 36 healthy volunteers participated in this randomized, triple-blind, sham-controlled experiment. They were stratified by sex and were randomly assigned to one of three groups according to the stimulation paradigm, including tDCS with (1) anodal and cathodal electrodes positioned over FCz and POz, respectively, (A-P tDCS), (2) anodal and cathodal electrodes positioned over POz and FCz, respectively, (P-A tDCS), and (3) sham tDCS. Dental drilling sounds can induce anxiety in some patients. This study aimed to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the relationship between dental fear and auditory stimuli. Thirty-four right-handed individuals (21 women and 13 men; average age, 31.2 years) were selected. The level of dental fear was assessed using the dental fear survey (DFS). Based on a threshold DFS score > 52, participants were categorized into two groups: dental fear (DF) group (n = 12) and control group (n = 22). Two types of stimuli were presented in a single session: dental and neutral sounds. Cerebral activation during the presentation of these sounds was evaluated using contrast-enhanced blood oxygenation level-dependent fMRI. In the DF group, dental sounds induced significantly stronger activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus and left caudate nucleus (one-sample t test, P < 0.001). In contrast, in the control group, significantly stronger activation was observed in the bilateral Heschl's gyri and left middle frontal gyrus (one-sample t test, P < 0.001). Additionally, a two-sample t test revealed that dental sounds induced a significantly stronger activation in the left caudate nucleus in the DF group than in the control group (P < 0.005). These findings suggest that the cerebral activation pattern in individuals with DF differs from that in controls. Background: Hyperornithinemia-hyperammonemia-homocitrullinuria (HHH) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive urea cycle disorder associated with a high risk of exacerbation of hyperammonemia during the perioperative period. Here, we describe an adult patient with HHH syndrome who developed hyperammonemic encephalopathy secondary to postoperative constipation., Case Presentation: A 52-year-old patient with HHH syndrome underwent intrathecal baclofen pump insertion for lower limb spasticity under general anesthesia. The surgery was uneventful, without any increase in serum ammonia levels. However, after surgery, he was constipated, and on postoperative day (POD) 3, he fell into a coma with an exacerbation of hyperammonemia (894 µg/dL). After administering a glycerin enema, he defecated, leading to a rapid decrease in serum ammonia levels to 165 µg/dL. He regained consciousness, and serum ammonia levels remained stable as long as he defecated., Conclusions: We suggest strict management of defecation during the perioperative period to prevent hyperammonemia in patients with HHH syndrome., (© 2024. Background: Although several complications of transcranial motor-evoked potentials (Tc-MEPs) have been reported, reports of arrhythmias during Tc-MEP are very rare., Case Presentation: A 71-year-old woman underwent transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion under general anesthesia, with intraoperative Tc-MEP monitoring. Preoperative electrocardiography showed an incomplete right bundle branch block but no cardiovascular events in her life. After induction of anesthesia, Tc-MEP was recorded prior to the surgery. During the Tc-MEP monitoring, electrocardiography and arterial blood pressure showed a second-degree atrioventricular block, but it improved rapidly at the end of the stimulation, and the patient was hemodynamically stable. Tc-MEP was recorded seven times during surgery; the incidence of P waves without QRS complexes was significantly higher than before stimulation. The surgery was uneventful, and she was discharged eight days postoperatively without complications., Conclusions: Our case suggests that electrical stimulation for Tc-MEP can cause arrhythmia. Background: Postoperative intracranial complications are rare in spine surgery not including cranial procedures. We describe an uncommon case of pseudohypoxic brain swelling (PHBS) and secondary hydrocephalus after transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) presenting as impaired consciousness and repeated seizures., Case Presentation: A 65-year-old man underwent L4-5 TLIF for lumbar spondylolisthesis and began experiencing generalized seizures immediately postoperatively. Computed tomography (CT) revealed diffuse cerebral edema-like hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. He was transported to our hospital, at which time epidural drainage was halted and anti-edema therapy was commenced. His impaired consciousness improved. However, he suffered secondary hydrocephalus due to continuous bleeding from a dural defect and spinal epidural fluid collection 3 months later. Following the completion of dural repair and insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, his neurologic symptoms and neuroimaging findings improved significantly., Conclusions: PHBS can be considered in patients with unexpected neurological deterioration following lumbar spine surgery even with the absence of documented durotomy. This might be due to postoperative intracranial hypotension-associated venous congestion, and to be distinguished from the more common postoperative cerebral ischemic events-caused by arterial or venous occlusions-or anesthetics complications.

Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a lipid carrier in both the peripheral and the central nervous systems (CNSs). Lipid-loaded ApoE lipoprotein particles bind to several cell surface receptors to support membrane homeostasis and brain injury repair. In the brain, ApoE is produced predominantly by astrocytes, but it is also abundantly expressed in most neurons of the CNS. In this study, we addressed the role of ApoE in the hippocampus in mice, focusing on its role in response to radiation injury. To this aim, 8-week-old, wild-type, and ApoE-deficient (ApoE -/- ) female mice were acutely whole-body irradiated with 3 Gy of X-rays (0.89 Gy/min), then sacrificed 150 days post-irradiation. In addition, age-matching ApoE -/- females were chronically whole-body irradiated (20 mGy/d, cumulative dose of 3 Gy) for 150 days at the low dose-rate facility at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES), Rokkasho, Japan. To seek for ApoE-dependent modification during lineage progression from neural stem cells to neurons, we have evaluated the cellular composition of the dentate gyrus in unexposed and irradiated mice using stage-specific markers of adult neurogenesis. Our findings indicate that ApoE genetic inactivation markedly perturbs adult hippocampal neurogenesis in unexposed and irradiated mice. The effect of ApoE inactivation on the expression of a panel of miRNAs with an established role in hippocampal neurogenesis, as well as its transcriptional consequences in their target genes regulating neurogenic program, have also been analyzed. Our data show that the absence of ApoE -/- also influences synaptic functionality and integration by interfering with the regulation of mir-34a, mir-29b, and mir-128b, leading to the downregulation of synaptic markers PSD95 and synaptophysin mRNA. Finally, compared to acute irradiation, chronic exposure of ApoE null mice yields fewer consequences except for the increased microglia-mediated neuroinflammation. Exploring the function of ApoE in the hippocampus could have implications for developing therapeutic approaches to alleviate radiation-induced brain injury.

Porous metallic nanomaterials exhibit interesting physical and chemical properties, and are widely used in various fields. Traditional fabrication techniques are limited to metallurgy, sintering, electrodeposition, etc., which limit the control of pore size and distribution, and make it difficult to achieve materials with high surface areas. On the other hand, the chemical preparation of metallic nanoparticles is usually carried out with strong reducing agents or at high temperature, resulting in the formation of dispersed particles which cannot evolve into porous metal. In this study, we reported the simple fabrication of coral-like mesoporous Pd nanomaterial (Pd NC) with a ligament size of 4.1 nm. The fabrication was carried out by simple solvothermal reduction at a mild temperature of 135 °C, without using any templates. The control experiments suggested that tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) played a critical role in the Pd(II) reduction into Pd nanoclusters and their subsequent aggregation to form Pd NC, and another key point for the formation of Pd NC is not to use a strong reducing agent. In alkaline water electrolysis, the Pd NC outperforms the monodisperse Pd NPs and the state-of-the-art Pt (under large potentials) for H 2 evolution reaction, probably due to its mesoporous structure and large surface area. This work reports a simple and novel method for producing porous metallic nanomaterials with a high utilization efficiency of metal atoms, and it is expected to contribute to the practical preparation of porous metallic nanomaterials by solvothermal reductions.

Background: In western Yokohama, our hospital and primary care clinics manage adults with asthma via a coordinated care system. We investigated the changes in the fractional expired nitric oxide (FeNO), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV 1 ), and forced oscillation technique (FOT) parameters over 3 years in a cohort of patients in our collaborative system., Methods: From 288 adults with well controlled asthma managed under the Yokohama Seibu Hospital coordinated care system between January 2009 and May 2018, we selected 99 subjects to undergo spirometry, FeNO and FOT testing over 3 years and analyzed the changes in these parameters., Results: Of the 99 patients enrolled, 17 (17.2%) experienced at least one exacerbation (insufficiently controlled (IC)), whereas, 82 (82.8%) remained in well controlled during the 3-year study period. Of well-controlled patients, 54 patients (54.5%) met the criteria for clinical remission under treatment (CR); the remaining 28 patients did not meet the CR criteria (WC). There were no differences in FeNO, FEV 1 , or FOT parameters at baseline among the IC, WC, and CR groups. The levels of FEV 1 decreased gradually, whereas the levels of FeNO decreased significantly over 3 years. The levels of percent predicted FEV 1 (%FEV 1 ) significantly increased. We also observed significant improvement in FOT parameters; reactance at 5 Hz (R 5 ), resonant frequency (Fres), and integral of reactance up to the resonant frequency (AX). The CR group demonstrated significant relationships between the change in FeNO and the change in FEV 1 and between the change in FEV 1 and the change in FOT parameters. No significant correlations emerged in the IC or WC group., Conclusion: The decrease in FeNO and increase in %FEV 1 , we observed in all study participants suggest that the coordinated care system model benefits patients with asthma. Although it is difficult to predict at baseline which patients will experience an exacerbation, monitoring changes in FeNO and FEV 1 is useful in managing patients with asthma. During emerging adulthood, individuals' subjective well-being declines owing to challenges regarding identity, work, and romantic relationships. Although the relationships among personality traits, self-construal, and well-being have been examined, studies have focused on personal rather than relational subjective well-being. Furthermore, self-construal's moderating effect on the relationship between personality traits and subjective well-being remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined the relationships among the Big-five personality traits and subjective well-being (life satisfaction, happiness, and interdependent happiness) and the moderating effect of self-construal among 1548 Japanese emerging adults (M age  = 22.24, SD = 1.01). Regression analysis indicated that all aspects of subjective well-being were negatively associated with neuroticism and positively associated with extraversion, independent and interdependent self-construal. Further, agreeableness was positively associated with personal and relational well-being. Independent or interdependent self-construal can moderate the relationships between neuroticism, extraversion, and agreeableness and subjective well-being. Extraterrestrial minerals on the surface of airless Solar System bodies undergo gradual alteration processes known as space weathering over long periods of time. The signatures of space weathering help us understand the phenomena occurring in the Solar System. However, meteorites rarely retain the signatures, making it impossible to study the space weathering processes precisely. Here, we examine samples retrieved from the asteroid Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft and discover the presence of nonmagnetic framboids through electron holography measurements that can visualize magnetic flux. Magnetite particles, which normally provide a record of the nebular magnetic field, have lost their magnetic properties by reduction via a high-velocity (>5 km s -1 ) impact of a micrometeoroid with a diameter ranging from 2 to 20 μm after destruction of the parent body of Ryugu. Around these particles, thousands of metallic-iron nanoparticles with a vortex magnetic domain structure, which could have recorded a magnetic field in the impact event, are found. Through measuring the remanent magnetization of the iron nanoparticles, future studies are expected to elucidate the nature of the nebular/interplanetary magnetic fields after the termination of aqueous alteration in an asteroid., (© 2024. Mast cell stabilizers, including disodium cromoglycate (DSCG), were found to have potential as the agonists of an orphan G protein-coupled receptor, GPR35, although it remains to be determined whether GPR35 is expressed in mast cells and involved in suppression of mast cell degranulation. Our purpose in this study is to verify the expression of GPR35 in mast cells and to clarify how GPR35 modulates the degranulation. We explored the roles of GPR35 using an expression system, a mast cell line constitutively expressing rat GPR35, peritoneal mast cells, and bone marrow-derived cultured mast cells. Immediate allergic responses were assessed using the IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) model. Various known GPR35 agonists, including DSCG and newly designed compounds, suppressed IgE-mediated degranulation. GPR35 was expressed in mature mast cells but not in immature bone marrow-derived cultured mast cells and the rat mast cell line. Degranulation induced by antigens was significantly downmodulated in the mast cell line stably expressing GPR35. A GPR35 agonist, zaprinast, induced a transient activation of RhoA and a transient decrease in the amount of filamentous actin. GPR35 agonists suppressed the PCA responses in the wild-type mice but not in the GPR35 -/- mice. These findings suggest that GPR35 should prevent mast cells from undergoing degranulation induced by IgE-mediated antigen stimulation and be the primary target of mast cell stabilizers. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The agonists of an orphan G protein-coupled receptor, GPR35, including disodium cromoglycate, were found to suppress degranulation of rat and mouse mature mast cells, and their antiallergic effects were abrogated in the GPR35 -/- mice, indicating that the primary target of mast cell stabilizers should be GPR35., (Copyright © 2024 by The Author(s).)

Purpose: Fearful dental patients often cite various dental instruments or procedures as triggers for their dental fear. Thus, visual dental stimuli provoke anxiety. This preliminary study aimed to assess the level of aversion to visual stimuli in dental patients and compare it with that in dentists., Patients and Methods: A total of 43 dental patients (25 women, 18 men; average age, 29.9 ± 13.3 years; patient group) and 13 dentists (4 women, 9 men; average age, 28.2 ± 2.0 years; dentist group) were included. All participants had previously undergone dental treatment. The dental fear level was assessed using the self-reported Dental Fear Survey (DFS). Thirty-two images associated with dental treatment were prepared and classified into three categories: dental instruments, dental procedures, and the dental environment. All participants rated their level of disgust toward each image on a visual analog scale with scores ranging from 0 to 100., Results: In the patient group, the disgust ratings for tooth extraction, dental drilling, and local anesthesia were >60, which were significantly different from those in the dentist group (Mann-Whitney U- test, p <0.001, p =0.001, and p =0.001, respectively). The ranking order of the disgust ratings for the 32 images showed significant correlation between the patient and dentist groups (Spearman correlation coefficient, r=0.80, p <0.001). In the patient group, the disgust ratings for dental impressions and the interdental brush, dental light, and dental chair were significantly correlated with DFS scores (r=0.61, p <0.001; r=0.47, p =0.001; r=0.41, p =0.006; and r=0.40, p =0.008, respectively)., Conclusion: This study revealed that patients have more negative feelings toward invasive procedures than dentists. However, a significant correlation was identified between the ranking of aversion-provoking dental stimuli by patients and dentists. Tosufloxacin tosilate is classified as a new quinolone antibacterial agent, which has been reported to cause crystal nephropathy. However, the origin of these crystal deposits has not yet been elucidated. We encountered a case of renal failure that progressed slowly owing to crystal-forming interstitial nephritis after long-term exposure to tosufloxacin. Mass spectrometry of the renal specimens revealed that tosufloxacin was deposited in the kidneys. The patient's renal function improved slowly with the withdrawal of tosufloxacin and steroid therapy. This is the first case to demonstrate the presence of crystal deposits consisting of tosufloxacin.

The dose-response characteristics of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) remain uncertain but may be related to variability in brain electric fields due to individual anatomical factors. Here, we investigated whether the electric fields influence the responses to motor cortical tDCS. In a randomized cross-over design, 21 participants underwent 10 min of anodal tDCS with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 mA or sham. Compared to sham, all active conditions increased the size of motor evoked potentials (MEP) normalized to the pre-tDCS baseline, irrespective of anterior or posterior magnetic test stimuli. The electric field calculated in the motor cortex of each participant had a nonlinear effect on the normalized MEP size, but its effects were small compared to those of other participant-specific factors. Background: Sensitive gag reflexes prevent dental patients from receiving appropriate treatment. Aromatherapy helps patients relax during dental procedures. However, the effect of aromatherapy on the gag reflex caused by the stimulation of the oral cavity is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate whether aromatherapy reduces gag reflexes during oral stimulation., Methods: In this randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blind, crossover study, the gag reflexes of 24 healthy individuals (12 females and 12 males; mean age: 34.3 ± 9.5 years) were quantified. A standard saliva ejector was slowly guided down the participant's throat to determine the maximum tolerance of the gag reflex, and the insertion distance was measured to quantify the gag reflex. All individuals participated in an aromatherapy session with peppermint essential oil and a placebo session with distilled water. The gag reflex was quantified before (baseline) and after each session. Another measurement was performed using nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation as a positive control., Results: Gag reflex values significantly increased after aromatherapy with both peppermint essential oil and placebo compared to baseline values (paired t-test, P < 0.001 and P = 0.014, respectively). The gag reflex value also increased significantly during nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation (paired t-test, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the increase rate of gag reflex values between the positive control and aromatherapy interventions, but it was significantly lower after the placebo intervention (repeated measures analysis of variance, P = 0.003; post-hoc test, P = 0.83 and P = 0.02)., Conclusion: Aromatherapy with peppermint essential oil has the potential for reducing gag reflex during dental procedures., Trial Registration: The study was registered in the University hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry under the code UMIN000050616 (approved 17/03/2023)., (© 2024. The Hayabusa2 spacecraft delivered samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu to Earth. Some of the sample particles show evidence of micrometeoroid impacts, which occurred on the asteroid surface. Among those, particles A0067 and A0094 have flat surfaces on which a large number of microcraters and impact melt splashes are observed. Two impact melt splashes and one microcrater were analyzed to unveil the nature of the objects that impacted the asteroid surface. The melt splashes consist mainly of Mg-Fe-rich glassy silicates and Fe-Ni sulfides. The microcrater trapped an impact melt consisting mainly of Mg-Fe-rich glassy silicate, Fe-Ni sulfides, and minor silica-rich glass. These impact melts show a single compositional trend indicating mixing of Ryugu surface materials and impactors having chondritic chemical compositions. The relict impactor in one of the melt splashes shows mineralogical similarity with anhydrous chondritic interplanetary dust particles having a probable cometary origin. The chondritic micrometeoroids probably impacted the Ryugu surface during its residence in a near-Earth orbit.

Introduction: This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the motivation to lead (MTL) scale consisting of three factors-affective-identity MTL, non-calculative MTL, and social-normative MTL-and examine its construct validity and reliability., Methods: The participants comprised 500 university students and 500 employees aged 20-29 years registered with a Japanese research company., Results: Based on a confirmatory factor analysis, the three-factor model was found to be appropriate for the Japanese context. The measurement invariance analyses indicated scalar invariance between students and employees and between men and women. Finally, the correlation analysis with the Big Five personality traits conducted to examine construct validity indicated that affective-identity MTL and social-normative MTL had significant relationships with all five traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, open-mindedness, and negative emotionality). Although non-calculative MTL was not significantly correlated, it can be interpreted in the Japanese context., Discussion: The results indicate the adequate construct validity and reliability of the Japanese version of the MTL scale. Characterization of the elemental distribution of samples with rough surfaces has been strongly desired for the analysis of various natural and artificial materials. Particularly for pristine and rare analytes with micrometer sizes embedded on specimen surfaces, non-invasive and matrix effect-free analysis is required without surface polishing treatment. To satisfy these requirements, we proposed a new method employing the sequential combination of two imaging modalities, i.e., microenergy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (micro-XRF) and Raman micro-spectroscopy. The applicability of the developed method is tested by the quantitative analysis of cation composition in micrometer-sized carbonate grains on the surfaces of intact particles sampled directly from the asteroid Ryugu. The first step of micro-XRF imaging enabled a quick search for the sparsely scattered and micrometer-sized carbonates by the codistributions of Ca 2+ and Mn 2+ on the Mg 2+ - and Fe 2+ -rich phyllosilicate matrix. The following step of Raman micro-spectroscopy probed the carbonate grains and analyzed their cation composition (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Fe 2+ + Mn 2+ ) in a matrix effect-free manner via the systematic Raman shifts of the lattice modes. The carbonates were basically assigned to ferroan dolomite bearing a considerable amount of Fe 2+ + Mn 2+ at around 10 atom %. These results are in good accordance with the assignments reported by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, where the thin-sectioned and surface-polished Ryugu particles were applicable. The proposed method requires neither sectioning nor surface polishing; hence, it can be applied to the remote sensing apparatus on spacecrafts and planetary rovers. Furthermore, the non-invasive and matrix effect-free characterization will provide a reliable analytical tool for quantitative analysis of the elemental distribution on the samples with surface roughness and chemical heterogeneity at a micrometer scale, such as art paintings, traditional crafts with decorated shapes, as well as sands and rocks with complex morphologies in nature.

Objective: While mixed dentition space analysis is a common practice in pediatric dentistry, digital models created using an intraoral scanner are not as widely used in clinical settings. This preliminary study used a very small sample size with one reference model and aimed to (1) compare the accuracy of mixed dentition space analysis using a digital model obtained from an optical impression with that of conventional plaster model-based analysis and (2) assess inter-examiner differences., Results: The space required for the mandibular permanent canine and premolars and arch length discrepancy were calculated using each model. The largest significant difference between plaster- and digital model-based analyses was identified when the right arch length discrepancy was considered (-0.49 mm; 95% confidence interval: -0.95-0.03); however, the value was considered clinically insignificant. Significant inter-examiner differences were observed for six items of the plaster model; however, no such differences were observed when using the digital model. In conclusion, digital model space analysis may have the same level of accuracy as conventional plaster model analysis and likely results in smaller inter-examiner differences than plaster model analysis., (© 2023. Purpose: The effect of chronic low dose-rate radiation exposure on cancers was investigated by analyzing the data of mice experiments conducted at the Institute for Environmental Sciences (IES). This analysis focuses on the differences between malignant lymphomas and solid cancers., Materials and Methods: The analysis is conducted based on the mathematical model introduced in our previous work. The model is expanded to analyze malignant lymphomas and solid cancers separately. Using the expanded model, the effect of chronic low dose-rate radiation on malignant lymphomas and solid cancers are discussed based on their occurrences, progressions, and mortalities., Results: Non-irradiated control group and 20 mGy/day × 400 days irradiated groups are analyzed. The analysis showed that radiation exposure shortened mean life expectancy for both malignant lymphomas and solid cancers (shorter by 89.6 days for malignant lymphomas and 149.3 days for solid cancers). For malignant lymphomas, both the occurrence and the progression are affected by radiation exposure. The mean age at which malignant lymphoma developed in mice was shortened by 32.7 days and the mean progression period was shortened by 57.3 days. The occurrence of solid cancer is also affected by radiation exposure, wherein the mean age at which solid cancer develops was shortened by 147.9 days. However, no significant change in progression period of solid cancers was seen in the analysis., Conclusions: The analysis showed that the occurrence and mean lifespan are affected in both malignant lymphomas and solid cancers. The shortening of the progression period is only seen in malignant lymphoma, no significant change was observed in solid cancers.

Mast cells and basophils share many characteristics, such as surface expression of the high affinity receptor of IgE, FcεRI, granule storage of histamine, which is released during their activation, and potentials to produce pro-/anti-inflammatory cytokines. These similar leukocytes, however, were found to have their own process of differentiation. Indeed, accumulating evidence suggests that these cells should play critical roles in type I allergy including anaphylaxis and in urticaria. Various inflammatory mediators derived from mast cells/basophils, such as histamine, platelet-activating factor, prostanoids, and leukotrienes, have been paid a particular attention to as the therapeutic targets for type I allergy and inflammatory diseases. Recent progress in the field of mast cell/basophil research has shed light on their physiological roles in bacterial infection, energy metabolism, and cutaneous/intestinal inflammation. This review makes a brief introduction of these recent studies, which are expected to provide novel therapeutic approaches for infectious and chronic inflammatory diseases.

Purpose: In this paper, we described our mathematical model for radiation-induced life shortening in detail and applied the model to the experimental data on mice to investigate the effect of radiation on cancer-related life-shortening., Materials and Methods: Our mathematical model incorporates the following components: (i) occurrence of cancer, (ii) progression of cancer over time, and (iii) death from cancer. We evaluated the progression of cancer over time by analyzing the cancer incidence data and cumulative mortalities data obtained from mice experiments conducted at the Institute for Environmental Sciences (IES)., Results: We analyzed non-irradiated control and 20 mGy/day × 400 days irradiated groups. In the analysis, all malignant neoplasms were lumped together and referred to as 'cancer'. Our analysis showed that the reduction in lifespan (104 days in median) was the result of the early onset of cancer (68 days in median) and the shortening of the cancer progression period (48 days in median)., Conclusions: We described in detail our mathematical model for radiation-induced life-shortening attributed to cancer. We analyzed the mice data obtained from the experiment conducted at the IES using our model. We decomposed radiation-induced life-shortening into the early onset of cancer and the shortening of the cancer progression period.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening lung condition characterized by widespread inflammation and pulmonary edema. Adrenomedullin (AM), a bioactive peptide with various functions, is expected to be applied in treating ARDS. Its functions are regulated primarily by two receptor activity-modifying proteins, RAMP2 and RAMP3, which bind to the AM receptor calcitonin receptor-like receptor (CLR). However, the roles of RAMP2 and RAMP3 in ARDS remain unclear. We generated a mouse model of ARDS via intratracheal administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and analyzed the pathophysiological significance of RAMP2 and RAMP3. RAMP2 expression declined with LPS administration, whereas RAMP3 expression increased at low doses and decreased at high doses of LPS. After LPS administration, drug-inducible vascular endothelial cell-specific RAMP2 knockout mice (DI-E-RAMP2 -/- ) showed reduced survival, increased lung weight, and had more apoptotic cells in the lungs. DI-E-RAMP2 -/- mice exhibited reduced expression of Epac1 (which regulates vascular endothelial cell barrier function), while RAMP3 was upregulated in compensation. In contrast, after LPS administration, RAMP3 -/- mice showed no significant changes in survival, lung weight, or lung pathology, although they exhibited significant downregulation of iNOS, TNF-α, and NLRP3 during the later stages of inflammation. Based on transcriptomic analysis, RAMP2 contributed more to the circulation-regulating effects of AM, whereas RAMP3 contributed more to its inflammation-regulating effects. These findings indicate that, while both RAMP2 and RAMP3 participate in ARDS pathogenesis, their functions differ distinctly. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contain ≲20% of the carbon in the interstellar medium. They are potentially produced in circumstellar environments (at temperatures ≳1000 kelvin), by reactions within cold (~10 kelvin) interstellar clouds, or by processing of carbon-rich dust grains. We report isotopic properties of PAHs extracted from samples of the asteroid Ryugu and the meteorite Murchison. The doubly- 13 C substituted compositions (Δ2× 13 C values) of the PAHs naphthalene, fluoranthene, and pyrene are 9 to 51‰ higher than values expected for a stochastic distribution of isotopes. The Δ2× 13 C values are higher than expected if the PAHs formed in a circumstellar environment, but consistent with formation in the interstellar medium. By contrast, the PAHs phenanthrene and anthracene in Ryugu samples have Δ2× 13 C values consistent with formation by higher-temperature reactions.

Background and Objectives: Postoperative dysphagia is a common complication of anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF), although its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Patients with severe dysphagia may suffer from serious complications such as aspiration pneumonia, in addition to difficulty with oral intake or malnutrition; therefore, a prompt indicator for postoperative management would be helpful. We quantitatively evaluated the retropharyngeal space (RS) after ACDF and investigated its association with postoperative dysphagia., Methods: This multicenter retrospective study analyzed the clinical data of 82 consecutive patients who underwent ACDF. The anteroposterior distance (APD) of the RS was measured at the C2 level using a lateral radiographic view on postoperative day 1. Postoperative dysphagia was subjectively assessed using the Bazaz-Yoo Dysphagia Severity Scale. We statistically evaluated the association between the APD of the RS and postoperative dysphagia., Results: The mean APD of the RS in all 82 patients was 3.6 mm preoperatively and significantly increased to 8.2 mm postoperatively (P < .0001). Twenty-two patients (26.8%) had postoperative dysphagia. Multivariable analysis revealed that the postoperative APD was associated with postoperative dysphagia (odds ratio 1.27, 95% CI 1.10-1.50, P = .0007). The receiver operating characteristic curve (area under the curve 0.70, 95% CI 0.58-0.83) demonstrated that the postoperative APD of the RS cutoff value was 6.1 mm, with a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 35%. With this cutoff value, the positive and negative predictive values for postoperative dysphagia were 36% and 100%, respectively., Conclusion: Our data demonstrate that a value of 6.1 mm for the APD of the RS is an effective indicator for dysphagia after ACDF, which contributes to optimizing the patient management in the acute postoperative period., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). The carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu has been explored by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft to elucidate the actual nature of hydrous asteroids. Laboratory analyses revealed that the samples from Ryugu are comparable to unheated CI carbonaceous chondrites; however, reflectance spectra of Ryugu samples and CIs do not coincide. Here, we demonstrate that Ryugu sample spectra are reproduced by heating Orgueil CI chondrite at 300°C under reducing conditions, which caused dehydration of terrestrial weathering products and reduction of iron in phyllosilicates. Terrestrial weathering of CIs accounts for the spectral differences between Ryugu sample and CIs, which is more severe than space weathering that likely explains those between asteroid Ryugu and the collected samples. Previous assignments of CI chondrite parent bodies, i.e., chemically most primitive objects in the solar system, are based on the spectra of CI chondrites. This study indicates that actual spectra of CI parent bodies are much darker and flatter at ultraviolet to visible wavelengths than the spectra of CI chondrites.

In the management of post-injury patients with activity limitations, methods to prevent musculoskeletal disorders and hasten recovery are important. This randomized controlled, single-blinded study was a preliminary investigation of the combined effect of nutritional support with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on muscle strength and thickness. Healthy young adult males (median age, 21 years) were enrolled; each of their hands was randomly assigned to one of the following four groups: Placebo, Nutrition, NMES, and Nutrition + NMES. All participants received whey protein or placebo (3x/week for 6 weeks) and NMES training (3x/week for 6 weeks) on the abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscle of either the left or right hand. ADM muscle strength and thickness were analyzed at baseline and at week 7. We analyzed 38 hands (9 Placebo, 10 Nutrition, 9 NMES, 10 Nutrition + NMES). There was significantly greater muscle strengthening in the Nutrition + NMES group compared to the Placebo group or the NMES group, but no significant difference in gain of muscle thickness. The combined intervention may be effective in improving muscle strength. Purpose: Generation of nociceptive sensory evoked potentials (NEPs) by selective stimulation of nociceptive intraepidermal nerve fibers is a simple technique which could be used as intraoperative nociception monitor. We evaluated the effects of remifentanil, propofol and sevoflurane on NEPs by this technique., Methods: Patients undergoing general anesthesia were assigned to groups in two studies. A-δ fiber selective NEPs were recorded. Study 1: NEPs were recorded at control, under anesthetics administration: remifentanil at an effect-site concentration (Ce) of 1.0 ng/mL (n = 10), propofol at Ce of 0.5 µg/mL (n = 10), or sevoflurane at 0.2 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) (n = 10), and recovery from the anesthetics. Study 2: NEPs were recorded at control and under administration of higher dose anesthetics: propofol at Ce of 0.5 and 1.0 µg/mL (n = 10) or sevoflurane at 0.2 and 0.5 MAC (n = 10). A P-value < 0.016 was considered statistically significant in multiple analyses., Results: Study 1: Remifentanil at Ce of 1.0 ng/mL significantly suppressed the amplitude of NEPs (mean amplitude (standard deviation) of control vs. remifentanil administration: 16.8 µV (3.8) vs. 10.1 µV (2.5), P < 0.001). Propofol and sevoflurane did not suppress the amplitude significantly. Study 2: Propofol at Ce of 0.5 and 1.0 µg/mL and sevoflurane at 0.2 and 0.5 MAC did not suppress the amplitude significantly., Conclusion: The amplitude of A-δ fiber selective NEPs was suppressed by remifentanil but not propofol or sevoflurane. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of cutting balloon angioplasty (CBA) and conventional balloon angioplasty (control group) for recurrent vascular access stenosis in arteriovenous fistulas., Materials and Methods: This prospective, randomized single-center clinical trial included patients with hemodynamically significant recurrent vascular access stenosis of an arteriovenous fistula. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to assess primary patency, whereas the log-rank test was used to evaluate differences in patency between groups. Functional evaluations were performed using Doppler ultrasonography., Results: Patients ( n  = 122) were randomly assigned to undergo CBA or conventional balloon angioplasty between December 2012 and November 2017. The clinical success rate was 100% in both groups. The anatomical success rates were 65% and 56% in the CBA and control groups, respectively. The primary patency of the target lesion was significantly better in the CBA group (33.3%) than in the control group (16.1%) at 6 months (hazard ratio, 0.50; 95% confidence interval, 0.33-0.77; p  = 0.00171). The stenosis percentage decreased significantly after angioplasty in the CBA group (Δ-50.7%) compared with the control group (Δ-41.9%) ( p  = 0.0008). Access flow, measured using duplex Doppler ultrasonography, improved after angioplasty in both groups (300-526 ml/min in the control group and, 268-546 ml/min in the CBA group). Change in access flow (Δ + 278 ± 162) in the CBA group tended to be greater than that in the control group (Δ + 226 ± 151) ( p  = 0.07). Studies of material returned from Cb asteroid Ryugu have revealed considerable mineralogical and chemical heterogeneity, stemming primarily from brecciation and aqueous alteration. Isotopic anomalies could have also been affected by delivery of exogenous clasts and aqueous mobilization of soluble elements. Here, we show that isotopic anomalies for mildly soluble Cr are highly variable in Ryugu and CI chondrites, whereas those of Ti are relatively uniform. This variation in Cr isotope ratios is most likely due to physicochemical fractionation between 54 Cr-rich presolar nanoparticles and Cr-bearing secondary minerals at the millimeter-scale in the bulk samples, likely due to extensive aqueous alteration in their parent bodies that occurred [Formula: see text] after Solar System birth. In contrast, Ti isotopes were marginally affected by this process. Our results show that isotopic heterogeneities in asteroids are not all nebular or accretionary in nature but can also reflect element redistribution by water.

The sample from the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu is analyzed in the context of carbonaceous meteorites soluble organic matter. The analysis of soluble molecules of samples collected by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft shines light on an extremely high molecular diversity on the C-type asteroid. Sequential solvent extracts of increasing polarity of Ryugu samples are analyzed using mass spectrometry with complementary ionization methods and structural information confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Here we show a continuum in the molecular size and polarity, and no organomagnesium molecules are detected, reflecting a low temperature and water-rich environment on the parent body approving earlier mineralogical and chemical data. High abundance of sulfidic and nitrogen rich compounds as well as high abundance of ammonium ions confirm the water processing. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are also detected in a structural continuum of carbon saturations and oxidations, implying multiple origins of the observed organic complexity, thus involving generic processes such as earlier carbonization and serpentinization with successive low temperature aqueous alteration., (© 2023. Purpose: The use of an endotracheal tube (ET) cuff filled with alkalized lidocaine (AL) can suppress ET-induced emergence phenomena, such as hypertension, tachycardia and coughing, and postoperative sore throat (POST) and hoarseness (PH). The efficacy of intracuff lidocaine may vary depending on the cuff shape, but there has been no study on the effects of a tapered cuff filled with AL. We examined whether intracuff AL suppresses ET-induced emergence phenomena, POST and PH., Methods: Sixty-two patients were enrolled in this study and the patients were randomly allocated to a group in which the tapered cuff was filled with AL (Group AL) and a group in which the tapered cuff was filled with normal saline (Group S). The primary outcomes of this study were changes in mean blood pressure (MBP) and heart rate (HR) at extubation. MBP, HR and the number of coughs were recorded before and up to 10 min after extubation. The degree of POST and the incidences of POST and PH were recorded at 15 min, 2 h and 24 h after extubation., Results: Changes in MBP before extubation and HR before and after extubation were significantly lower in Group AL than in Group S (p < 0.025). The number of coughs at extubation and the incidence of PH at 2 h after extubation were significantly lower in Group AL than in Group S (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.014, respectively)., Conclusion: AL in a tapered cuff significantly suppresses ET-induced cardiovascular changes in MBP and HR., (© 2023. Purpose: We investigated the 90-day mortality rate in elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery and the association of preoperative cardiac function with mortality., Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 133 consecutive patients aged 80 years or older who underwent hip fracture surgery. We obtained information for patient sex, age, comorbidities, medications, anesthesia method, left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions assessed by echocardiography, and preoperative brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed., Results: The 90-day mortality rate in patients with a mean age of 88.9 years was 7.5% (10/133). More than half of the patients had diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle. There were no significant differences in preoperative cardiac systolic and diastolic functions between the mortality group and non-mortality group. The preoperative BNP level in the mortality group was significantly higher than that in the non-mortality group (p = 0.038). Preoperative BNP level was not an independent risk factor for 90-day mortality (p = 0.081) in the primary multivariate logistic regression analysis but was an independent risk factor (p = 0.039) with an odds ratio of 1.004 (95% CI 1.000-1.008) in the sensitivity analysis with different explanatory variables., Conclusion: The 90-day mortality rate in patients over 80 years old after hip fracture surgery was 7.5%. There were no significant differences in preoperative cardiac function assessed by echocardiography between the mortality and non-mortality groups. Our results suggest that there is no association or only a weak association of high BNP level with 90-day mortality in this age population., (© 2023. Samples from the carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu provide information on the chemical evolution of organic molecules in the early solar system. Here we show the element partitioning of the major component ions by sequential extractions of salts, carbonates, and phyllosilicate-bearing fractions to reveal primordial brine composition of the primitive asteroid. Sodium is the dominant electrolyte of the salt fraction extract. Anions and NH 4 + are more abundant in the salt fraction than in the carbonate and phyllosilicate fractions, with molar concentrations in the order SO 4 2-  > Cl -  > S 2 O 3 2-  > NO 3 -  > NH 4 + . The salt fraction extracts contain anionic soluble sulfur-bearing species such as S n -polythionic acids (n < 6), C n -alkylsulfonates, alkylthiosulfonates, hydroxyalkylsulfonates, and hydroxyalkylthiosulfonates (n < 7). The sulfur-bearing soluble compounds may have driven the molecular evolution of prebiotic organic material transforming simple organic molecules into hydrophilic, amphiphilic, and refractory S allotropes., (© 2023. In the samples collected from the asteroid Ryugu, magnetite displays natural remanent magnetization due to nebular magnetic field, whereas contemporaneously grown iron sulfide does not display stable remanent magnetization. To clarify this counterintuitive feature, we observed their nanoscale magnetic domain structures using electron holography and found that framboidal magnetites have an external magnetic field of 300 A m -1 , similar to the bulk value, and its magnetic stability was enhanced by interactions with neighboring magnetites, permitting a disk magnetic field to be recorded. Micrometer-sized pyrrhotite showed a multidomain magnetic structure that was unable to retain natural remanent magnetization over a long time due to short relaxation time of magnetic-domain-wall movement, whereas submicron-sized sulfides formed a nonmagnetic phase.
