Flexibility has been pursued enthusiastically in the field of porous crystals for enhancing their adsorption and separation performances. However, flexibility has never been observed among porous crystals sustained thoroughly by van der Waals interactions since flexible motions readily lead to the collapse of the porous architecture. Here we report a van der Waals crystal featuring conformational flexibility as well as permanent microporosity. The single-crystal structure and its structural transition in response to the adsorption of water molecules were unambiguously disclosed by means of electron and X-ray crystal structure analyses. The peripheral aromatic rings of the constituent molecule rotated as increasing the ambient humidity, while the connectivity of the pores was maintained throughout the structural transition. The transformative pores allowed the guest water molecules to move exceedingly quickly through the pores with a time constant of 490 μs. We demonstrated that the quick release of water induced by photothermal heating induced a significant upward bending of a film set above the crystalline powder compared to conventional porous materials. Triarylboranes (TABs) have been employed as colorimetric and/or fluorometric anion sensors. The majority of TAB-based anion sensors exhibit blue-shift modes of absorption and photoluminescence (PL) or turn off of PL, attributed to the intrinsic electronic polarity of the trivalent boron unit in their molecular designs. In this Concept article, I introduce a novel approach to modulating the photophysical properties of TABs toward a red-shift mode by balancing the dual, opposing roles of the amine-bridged TAB (phenazaborine). This molecular design strategy enables significant changes in color and emission response to anions, shifting to the lower energy regime in solution. ConspectusModulating the photophysical properties of organic emitters through molecular design is a fundamental endeavor in materials science. A critical aspect of this process is the control of the excited-state energy, which is essential for the development of triplet exciton-harvesting organic emitters, such as those with thermally activated delayed fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence. These emitters are pivotal for developing highly efficient organic light-emitting diodes and bioimaging probes. A particularly promising class of these emitters consists of twisted donor-acceptor organic π-conjugated scaffolds. These structures facilitate a spatial separation of the frontier molecular orbitals, which is crucial for achieving a narrow singlet-triplet energy gap. This narrow gap is necessary to overcome the endothermic reverse intersystem crossing process, enhancing the efficiency of thermally activated delayed fluorescence. To precisely modulate the photophysical properties of these emitting materials, it is essential to understand the electronic structures of new donor-acceptor scaffolds, especially those influenced by heteroatoms, as well as their conformations and topologies. This understanding not only improves the efficiency of these emitters but also expands their potential applications in advance technologies.In 2014, the Takeda group made a significant breakthrough by discovering a novel method for synthesizing U-shaped diazaacenes (dibenzo[ a,j ]phenazine) through an oxidative skeletal rearrangement of 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diamines. This class of compounds is typically challenging to synthesize using conventional organic reactions. The resulting unique geometric and electronic structure of U-shaped diazaacenes opened new possibilities for photophysical applications. Leveraging the U-shaped structure, photoluminescent properties, and high electron affinity, we developed twisted donor-acceptor-donor compounds. These compounds exhibit efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence, stimuli-responsive luminochromism, heavy atom-free room-temperature phosphorescence, and anion-responsive red shifts. These innovative emitters have demonstrated significant potential in various practical applications, including organic light-emitting diode devices and advanced sensing systems.In this Account, I summarize our achievements in modulating the photofunctions of dibenzo[ a,j ]phenazine-cored twisted donor-acceptor-donor compounds by controlling excited-state singlet-triplet energy gaps through conformational regulation. Our comprehensive studies revealed the significant impact of heteroatoms, molecular conformations, and topologies on the photophysics of these compounds. These findings highlight the importance of molecular engineering in tailoring the photophysical properties of organic donor-acceptor π-conjugated materials for specific applications. Our research has demonstrated that incorporating heteroatoms into the molecular framework effectively tunes the electronic properties and, consequently, the photophysical behavior of the compounds. Understanding the influence of heteroatoms, conformational dynamics, and molecular topology on excited-state behavior will open new avenues for next-generation optoelectronic devices and biological technologies. These advancements include ultra-low-power displays, photonic communication, and super-resolution biomedical imaging. Ultimately, our work highlights the potential of strategic molecular design in driving innovation across various fields, paving the way for the development of cutting-edge technologies that leverage the unique properties of organic emitters.

Photophysical modulation of triarylboranes (TABs) through Lewis acid-base interactions is a fundamental approach for sensing anions. Yet, design principles for anion-responsive TABs displaying significant red-shift in absorption and photoluminescence (PL) have remained elusive. Herein, a new strategy for modulating the photophysical properties of TABs in a red-shift mode has been presented, by using a nitrogen-bridged triarylborane (1,4-phenazaborine: PAzB) with a contradictory dual role as a Lewis acid and an electron donor. Following the strategy, PAzB derivatives connected with an electron-deficient azaaromatic have been developed, and these compounds display a distinct red-shift in their absorption and PL in response to an anion. Spectroscopic analyses and quantum chemical calculations have revealed the formation of a tetracoordinate borate upon the addition of fluoride, narrowing the HOMO-LUMO gap and enhancing the charge-transfer character in the excited state. Novel water-dispersible donor-acceptor-donor π-conjugated bolaamphiphiles, having dibenzophenazine as the acceptor and heteroatom-bridged amphiphilic diarylamines as the donors, have been developed. The materials displayed a distinct photoluminescence color change in response to humidity in a poly(vinylalcohol) matrix.

On-surface synthesis is of importance to fabricate low dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials with atomic precision. Here, we synthesize nitrogen-doped nanographene with an [18]annulene pore and its dimer through sequential reactions of debromination, aryl-aryl coupling, cyclodehydrogenation and C-N coupling on Ag(111) from 3,12-dibromo-7,8-diaza[5]helicene. The inner structures of the products were characterized with scanning tunneling microscopy with a CO terminated tip at low temperature. Furthermore, the first four unoccupied electronic states of the nanographene were investigated with a combination of scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Except for the LUMO + 2 state observed at +1.3 V, the electronic states at 500 mV, 750 mV and 1.9 V were attributed to the superatom molecular orbitals at the [18]annulene pore, which were significantly shifted towards the Fermi level due to the hybridization with the confined surface state., (© 2023. The photophysics of a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitting macrocycle consisting of two dibenzo[a,j]phenazine acceptor moieties bridged by two N,N,N',N'-tetraphenylene-1,4-diamine donor units was scrutinized in solution by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. The fluorescence lifetime of the compound proved to be strongly solvent-dependent. It ranges from 6.3 ns in cyclohexane to 34 ps in dimethyl sulfoxide. In polar solvents the fluorescence decay is predominantly due to internal conversion. In non-polar ones radiative decay and intersystem crossing contribute. Contrary to the behaviour in polymer matrices (S. Izumi et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2020, 142, 1482) the excited state decay is not predominantly due to prompt and delayed fluorescence. A new class of diamino-substituted π-extended phenazine compound was synthesized, and its photophysical properties were investigated. The U-shaped diaminophenazine displayed photoluminescence in solution with moderate quantum yield. The diamino aromatic compound was found applicable to the poly-condensation with formaldehyde to form Tröger's base ladder polymer. Previous work has reported the synthesis of donor-acceptor-donor molecules based on dibenzophenazine acceptor group, presenting thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) properties and their application in the assembly of highly efficient electroluminescent devices. Herein, we focus on the characterisation of charge carrier species through UV-Vis-NIR spectroelectrochemical and potentiostatic EPR techniques, in addition to the investigation of electropolymerisation properties of some compounds depicted in this study. The promising electrochromic features of both small molecules and conjugated polymers led to the assembly and investigation of electrochromic devices, evidencing the materials' versatility, applied in such different approaches as electrochromic windows and electroluminescent devices. Perfluorinated aromatic compounds, the so-called perfluoroarenes, are widely used in materials science owing to their high electron affinity and characteristic intermolecular interactions. However, methods to synthesize highly strained perfluoroarenes are limited, which greatly limits their structural diversity. Herein, we report the synthesis and isolation of perfluorocycloparaphenylenes (PFCPPs) as a class of ring-shaped perfluoroarenes. Using macrocyclic nickel complexes, we succeeded in synthesizing PF[n]CPPs (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) in one-pot without noble metals. The molecular structures of PF[n]CPPs (n = 10, 12, 14) were determined by X-ray crystallography to confirm their tubular alignment. Photophysical and electrochemical measurements revealed that PF[n]CPPs (n = 10, 12, 14) exhibited wide HOMO-LUMO gaps, high reduction potentials, and strong phosphorescence at low temperature. PFCPPs are not only useful as electron-accepting organic materials but can also be used for accelerating the creation of topologically unique molecular nanocarbon materials., (© 2022. A dual-photofunctional organogermanium compound based on a donor-acceptor-donor architecture that exhibits thermally activated delayed fluorescence and mechano-responsive luminochromism has been developed. The developed compound was successfully applied as an emitter for efficient organic light-emitting diodes.

A new thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) compound based on a donor-acceptor (D-A) architecture (D = phenoxazine; A = dibenzo[ a,j ]phenazine) has been developed, and its photophysical properties were characterized. The D-A compound is applicable as an emitting material for efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and its external quantum efficiency (EQE) exceeds the theoretical maximum of those with prompt fluorescent emitters. Novel electron donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) compounds comprising dibenzo[a,j]phenazine as the central acceptor core and two 7-membered diarylamines (iminodibenzyl and iminostilbene) as the donors have been designed and synthesized. Investigation of their physicochemical properties revealed the impact of C 2 insertion into well-known carbazole electron donors on the properties of previously reported twisted dibenzo[a,j]phenazine-core D-A-D triads. Slight structural modification caused a drastic change in conformational preference, allowing unique photophysical behavior of dual emission derived from room-temperature phosphorescence and triplet-triplet annihilation. Furthermore, electrochemical analysis suggested sigma-dimer formation and electrochemical polymerization on the electrode. Two-dimensional honeycomb molecular networks confine a substrate's surface electrons within their pores, providing an ideal playground to investigate the quantum electron scattering phenomena. Besides surface state confinement, laterally protruding organic states can collectively hybridize at the smallest pores into superatom molecular orbitals. Although both types of pore states could be simultaneously hosted within nanocavities, their coexistence and possible interaction are unexplored. Here, we show that these two types of pore states do coexist within the smallest nanocavities of a two-dimensional halogen-bonding multiporous network grown on Ag(111) studied using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and electron plane wave expansion simulations. We find that superatom molecular orbitals undergo an important stabilization when hybridizing with the confined surface state, following the significant lowering of its free-standing energy. These findings provide further control over the surface electronic structure exerted by two-dimensional nanoporous systems.

Room temperature phosphorescence materials offer great opportunities for applications in optoelectronics, due to their unique photophysical characteristics. However, heavy-atom-free organic emitters that can realize distinct electrophosphorescence are rarely exploited. Herein a new approach for designing heavy-atom-free organic room temperature phosphorescence emitters for organic light-emitting diodes is presented. The subtle tuning of the singlet and triplet excited states energies by appropriate choice of host matrix allows tailored emission properties and switching of emission channels between thermally activated delayed fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence. Moreover, an efficient and heavy-atom-free room temperature phosphorescence organic light-emitting diode using the developed emitter is realized.

In liver stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) using fiducial markers, the accuracy of automatic image recognition of fiducial markers is important, and the imaging dose cannot be neglected in image-guided radiotherapy. Optimal imaging parameters of fiducial markers were investigated for automatic image recognition and imaging dose. We investigated automatic recognition with fiducial markers of different shapes and sizes. In addition, the optimum imaging conditions were examined based on the automatic recognition when the presence or absence of a filter, focal spot size, and phantom thickness were altered using the fiducial markers with a high automatic recognition. The results for different shapes and sizes of fiducial markers showed that larger markers were recognized more automatically, whereas shorter markers were recognized in the correct position. By using the filter, we were able to reduce the imaging dose by one third or one half compared to the case without the filter. The results for the focal spot size showed that using a larger size resulted in higher automatic recognition accuracy than using a smaller size. For the relationship between the automatically recognized imaging conditions and the air kerma when the phantom thickness was altered, it was necessary to keep the tube current-time product constant and increase the tube voltage in order to avoid poor recognition accuracy. The parameters we proposed are effective in shortening the treatment time and reducing the imaging dose because they allow us to acquire images with low doses and high accuracy of automatic recognition.

A new thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)-displaying macrocyclic compound m-1 comprising of two electron-donors (N,N'-diphenyl-m-phenylenediamine) and two electron-acceptors (dibenzo[a,j]phenazine) has been synthesized. The macrocycle developed herein is regarded as a regioisomer of the previously reported TADF macrocycle p-1, which has two N,N'-diphenyl-p-phenylenediamines as the donors. To understand the influence of the topology of the phenylenediamine donors on physicochemical properties of TADF-active macrocycles, herein the molecular structure in the single crystals, photophysical properties, electrochemical behavior, and TADF properties of m-1 have been investigated compared with those of p-1. Aziridines, i.e., the smallest saturated N-heterocycles, serve as useful building blocks in synthetic organic chemistry. Because of the release of the large ring strain energy accommodated in the small ring, (ca. 27 kcal/mol), aziridines undergo ring-opening reactions with a variety of nucleophiles. Therefore, among the synthetic reactions utilizing aziridines, regioselective ring-opening substitutions of aziridines with nucleophiles, such as heteroatomic nucleophiles (e.g., amines, alcohols, and thiols) and carbonaceous nucleophiles (e.g., carbanions, organometallic reagents, and electron-rich arenes), constitute a useful synthetic methodology to synthesize biologically relevant β-functionalized alkylamines. However, the regioselection in such traditional ring-opening substitutions of aziridines is highly dependent on the substrate combination, and stereochemical control is challenging to achieve, especially in the case of Lewis acid-promoted variants. Therefore, the development of robust catalytic ring-opening functionalization methods that enable precise prediction of regioselectivity and stereochemistry is desirable. In this direction, our group focused on the highly regioselective and stereospecific nature of the stoichiometric oxidative addition elementary step of 2-substituted aziridines into Pd(0) complexes in an S N 2 fashion. In conjunction with the recent advancements in transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of alkyl pseudohalides containing a C(sp 3 )-Q (Q = O, N, S, etc.) bond, aziridines can be used as nonclassical alkyl pseudohalides in regioselective and stereospecific cross-couplings.In this Account, starting from the background of transition-metal-catalyzed ring-opening functionalization of aziridines, our contributions to the palladium-catalyzed regioselective and stereoinvertive cross-couplings of aziridines with organoboron reagents to form C(sp 3 )-C, C(sp 3 )-B, and C(sp 3 )-Si bonds have been compiled. The developed methods allow the syntheses of medicinally important amine compounds, e.g., enantioenriched β-phenethylamines, β-amino acids, and their boron and silyl surrogates, from readily available enantiopure aziridine substrates. Notably, the regioselectivity of the ring opening can be switched by appropriate selection of the catalyst (i.e., Pd/NHC vs Pd/PR 3 systems). Computational studies rationalized the detailed mechanisms of the full catalytic cycle and the regioselectivity and stereospecificity of the reactions. The computational results suggested that the interactions operating between the Pd catalyst and aziridine substrate play important roles in determining the regioselection of the aziridine ring-opening event (i.e., oxidative addition). Also, the computational results rationalized the role of water molecules in promoting the transmetalation step through the formation of a Pd-hydroxide active intermediate. This Account evidences the benefits of synergistic collaborations between experimental and computational methods in developing novel transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.

Vapochromic behaviour of porous crystals is beneficial for facile and rapid detection of gaseous molecules without electricity. Toward this end, tailored molecular designs have been established for metal-organic, covalent-bonded and hydrogen-bonded frameworks. Here, we explore the hydrochromic chemistry of a van der Waals (VDW) porous crystal. The VDW porous crystal VPC-1 is formed from a novel aromatic dendrimer having a dibenzophenazine core and multibranched carbazole dendrons. Although the constituent molecules are connected via VDW forces, VPC-1 maintains its structural integrity even after desolvation. VPC-1 exhibits reversible colour changes upon uptake/release of water molecules due to the charge transfer character of the constituent dendrimer. Detailed structural analyses reveal that the outermost carbazole units alone are mobile in the crystal and twist simultaneously in response to water vapour. Electron-deficient azaaromatics play crucial roles in organic material fields. Therefore, the development of synthetic methods for electron-deficient azaaromatics and the exploration of their properties and functions is important for the advancement of materials sciences and related research fields. In this Feature Article, we describe new synthetic methods for exotic electron-deficient azaaromatics and their utilization in the design of multi-photofunctional organic materials. The key findings involve a novel oxidative skeletal rearrangement of binaphthaenediamines to give U-shaped azaaromics, i.e., dibenzo[a,j]phenazine, in good yields. The unique physicochemical features of the dibenzophenazine allow for the development of multi-photofunctional organic materials based on a U-shaped and twisted electron-donor-acceptor-donor scaffold. The developed compounds exhibit efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence, mechanochromic luminescence, and room-temperature phosphorescence, and they serve as emissive materials in organic light-emitting diodes.

Changes in the photophysical properties of pyrene (Py)-octafluoronaphthalene (OFN) co-crystals (Py⋅OFN) upon mechanical stimuli are described herein. The Py⋅OFN co-crystal showed a mechano-induced bathochromic shift in emission, and a similar tendency was observed for the 1,3,6,8-tetramethylpyrene-OFN co-crystal. These shifts are due to disruption of the microscopic molecular orientation in the co-crystal, which allows for excimer formation. In sharp contrast to the parent Py⋅OFN and methyl-substituted Py-OFN co-crystals, no mechano-induced bathochromic shift was observed when longer alkyl chains were introduced to the 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-positions of the Py chromophore. This photophysical opposability against mechanical stimuli could be explained by the orthogonally oriented alkyl groups on the Py ring, which existed between two Py cores like pillars. This fixed OFN to maintain the face-to-face alternatively stacked structure of the co-crystal and thus prevented the formation of the Py excimer. A new class of thermally activated delayed fluorescent donor-acceptor-donor-acceptor (D-A-D-A) π-conjugated macrocycle comprised of two U-shaped electron-acceptors (dibenzo[ a , j ]phenazine) and two electron-donors ( N , N '-diphenyl- p -phenyelendiamine) has been rationally designed and successfully synthesized. The macrocyclic compound displayed polymorphs-dependent conformations and emission properties. Comparative studies on physicochemical properties of the macrocycle with a linear surrogate have revealed significant effects of the structural cyclization of the D-A-repeating unit, including more efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Furthermore, an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device fabricated with the macrocycle compound as the emitter has achieved a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 11.6%, far exceeding the theoretical maximum (5%) of conventional fluorescent emitters and that with linear analogue (6.9%).

The relationship between the photophysical properties and molecular orientation of 1,3,6,8-tetraalkylpyrenes in the solid state is described herein. The introduction of alkyl groups with different chain structures (in terms of length and branching) did not affect the photophysical properties in solution, but significantly shifted the emission wavelengths and fluorescence quantum yields in the solid state for some samples. Pyrenes bearing ethyl, isobutyl, or neopentyl groups at the 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-positions showed similar emission profiles in both the solution and solid states. In contrast, pyrenes bearing other alkyl groups exhibited an excimer emission in the solid state, similar to that of the parent pyrene. On studying the photophysical properties in the solid state with respect to the obtained crystal structures, the observed solid-state photophysical properties were found to depend on the relative position of the pyrene chromophores. The solid-state photophysical properties can be controlled by the alkyl groups, which provide changing crystal packing. Recently, missing pieces of organophosphorus compounds, i.e., aromatic-fused diketophosphanyl compounds, have attracted much attention as promising scaffolds of building blocks for functional organic materials. In this review, the brief historical background, synthetic methods, structures, and optoelectronic aspects of aromatic-fused diketophosphanyls are overviewed.

A Pd-catalyzed enantiospecific and regioselective ring-opening Suzuki-Miyaura arylation of aziridine-2-carboxylates was developed. The cross-coupling allows for the asymmetric preparation of enantioenriched β 2 -aryl amino acids, starting from commercially available enantiopure d- and l-serine esters. A catalyst-controlled regiodivergent and stereospecific ring-opening C(sp 3 )-Si cross-coupling of 2-arylaziridines with silylborane enabled by synergistic Pd/Cu dual catalysis has been developed. Just by selecting a suitable combination of catalysts, the regioselectivity of the coupling is completely switched to efficiently provide two regioisomers of β-silylamines ( i.e. , β-silyl-α-phenethylamines and β-silyl-β-phenethylamines) in good to high yields. Furthermore, a slight modification of the reaction conditions caused a drastic change in reaction pathways, leading to a tandem reaction to produce another regioisomer of silylamine ( i.e. , α-silyl-β-phenethylamines) in an efficient and selective manner., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019.)

Ni(II) 10-Phosphacorrole, a porphyrinoid containing phosphorus at the meso position, was synthesized from a bis(α,α'-dibromodipyrrin) Ni(II) complex and a phosphine anion via the palladium-catalyzed formation of a C-C and two C-P bonds. The optoelectronic properties of Ni(II) 10-phosphacorrole can be modulated effectively by oxidation or coordination of a metal to the phosphorus center. While Ni(II) 10-phosphacorrole exhibits a distinctly aromatic character due to the cyclic conjugation of 18 π-electrons, its oxide exhibited weak antiaromaticity, which was confirmed experimentally and theoretically.

Background: Bile leakage after hepatectomy is a common complication. The purpose of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate the usefulness of non-surgical management of bile leakage after hepatectomy, using 12-year data from a single center study., Methods: Data from 15 patients (13 men, two women; mean age 67.1 ± 7.0 years) who had undergone non-surgical management for bile leakage between January 2005 and November 2017 were retrospectively reviewed., Results: We categorized bile leakage as central ( n = 5) or peripheral ( n = 10) leakage based on communication with the biliary tree. Percutaneous bile leakage drainage and/or endoscopic naso-biliary drainage (ENBD) ( n = 2) or the rendezvous technique ( n = 3) was successfully performed in five central-type cases, while all peripheral-type cases were treated with drainage alone; only one case required additional ethanol ablation. Bacterial bile cultures were positive in 11 cases and negative in four cases. The drainage catheters were removed after complete resolution in 13 cases (86.7%), while two patients with cases of peripheral-type leakage died due to cancer progression while the drain was in place. No case needed conversion to reoperation. The mean duration of drainage therapy in all cases was 210.1 ± 163.0 days (range 17-531 days), with 316.8 ± 180.8 days in the central type and 156.7 ± 131.5 days in the peripheral type; this duration was not significantly different ( P = 0.129)., Conclusion: Non-surgical treatment is a minimally invasive and effective management strategy for postoperative bile leakage and the modality used depends on the type of bile leakage encountered.

A series of bisbenzofuro[2,3- b:3',2'- e]pyridines (BBZFPys) bearing a chlorine functionality have been efficiently synthesized through a Pd-catalyzed double oxidative intramolecular C-H/C-H coupling of monochlorinated 2,6-diaryloxypyridines. The subsequent Buchwald-Hartwig amination of the chlorinated BBZFPys allowed for the access to a new class of donor-acceptor (D-A) π-conjugated compounds that comprise BBZFPy as an electron acceptor (A) and diarylamines as a donor (D) unit. The investigation of the steady-state photophysical properties of the prepared D-A compounds revealed that they are emissive in both solution and solid states in the blue-to-green color region. The singlet-triplet energy splitting (Δ E ST ) was found to be much smaller than that of substituent-free BBZFPy (0.70 eV), ranging from 0.01 to 0.56 eV. The time-resolved spectroscopy revealed that the D-A compounds, comprising a bis( tert-butyl)carbazole as the D and CF 3 -attached BBZFPy as the A, showed delayed fluorescence (DF) in nonpolar matrix host material (Zeonex), while in a polar matrix (DPEPO), room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) was faintly observed. Furthermore, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated with the D-A compounds as a blue emitter showed a moderate external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) up to 1.5%.

A novel twisted donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) π-conjugated compound that contains flexible and moderately-electron-donating units has been designed and synthesized. It exhibited not only multi-color-changing mechanochromic luminescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, but also, unexpectedly, room-temperature phosphorescence in a host layer.

We report on the engineering of full thermally activated delayed fluorescence - based white organic light emitting diodes (W-OLEDs) composed of three emitters (2,7-bis(9,9-dimethyl-acridin-10-yl)-9,9-dimethylthioxanthene-S,S-dioxide (DDMA-TXO2), 2,7-bis(phenoxazin-10-yl)-9,9-dimethylthioxanthene-S,S-dioxide (DPO-TXO2) and 3,11-di(10H-phenoxazin-10-yl)dibenzo[a,j]phenazine (POZ-DBPHZ) in two different hosts. By controlling the device design through the study of the emission of DDMA-TXO2 and DPO-TXO2, the behaviour of POZ-DBPHZ in a device with more than one emitter, and the combination of the three materials, respectively, we show that external quantum efficiencies as high as 16% can be obtained for a structure with a correlated colour temperature close to warm white, together with colour rendering index close to 80. However it is in their performance stability that provides the true breakthrough: at 1000 cd/m 2 the efficiencies were still above 10%, which is one of the best for this type of devices.

Novel U-shaped donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) π-conjugated multi-functional molecules comprising dibenzo[ a , j ]phenazine (DBPHZ) as an acceptor and phenothiazines (PTZ) as donors have been developed. Most importantly, the D-A-D compounds exhibit not only distinct tricolor-changeable mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) properties but also efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Quantum chemical calculations, X-ray diffraction analysis, and systematic studies on the photophysical properties indicated that the "two-conformation-switchable" PTZ units play a highly important role in achieving multi-color-changing MCL. Time-resolved photophysical measurements revealed that the developed D-A-D compounds also exhibit efficient orange-TADF. Furthermore, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices fabricated with the new TADF emitters have achieved high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) up to 16.8%, which significantly exceeds the theoretical maximum (∼5%) of conventional fluorescent emitters.

A palladium catalyzed regioselective borylative ring opening reaction of 2-arylaziridines to give β-amino-β-arylethylborates was developed. The reaction reported herein represents the first example of ring-opening borylation of non-vinylic aziridines and direct borylative C(sp 3 )-N bond cleavage of neutral organic substrates. NMR studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the active intermediate for the reaction is a PdL 2 complex [L = P( t -Bu) 2 Me]. The multi-component artificial force-induced reaction method (MC-AFIR) located the transition states for the regioselectivity-determining aziridine ring opening that proceeds in an S N 2 fashion, and explained the selectivity of the reaction. The full catalytic cycle consists of a selectivity-determining aziridine ring opening (oxidative addition), a proton transfer, phosphine ligand dissociation from the catalyst, boron-boron bond cleavage, and reductive elimination. Water is important to the drive the transmetalation step. The calculated overall mechanism and selectivity are consistent with the experimental results.

A versatile phosphorus-containing π-conjugated building block, thieno[3,4-c]phosphole-4,6-dione (TPHODO), has been developed. A new family of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters based on U-shaped D-A-D architecture with a novel accepting unit has been developed. All investigated compounds have small singlet-triplet energy splitting (ΔEST ) ranging from 0.02 to 0.20 eV and showed efficient TADF properties. The lowest triplet state of the acceptor unit plays the key role in the TADF mechanism. A series of phosphorus analogues of aromatic-fused monoimides (phthalimides and naphthalimides) bearing a mesityl group on the P center have been synthesized. In a comparison of their photophysical, electrochemical, and thermal properties with those of the corresponding imides, the impact of P incorporation was revealed. 2-Halogenoimidazolium salts are found to catalyze aza-Diels-Alder reaction of aldimines with Danishefsky diene in an efficient manner. Comparative studies and titration experiments support the formation of halogen bonding between imines and catalysts.

A facile and moderately functional-group-tolerant synthetic method for the preparation of 7,8-diaza[5]helicenes has been developed. It comprises of an oxidative ring-closing process of 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diamine (BINAM) derivatives with a chlorine-containing oxidant (t-BuOCl) in the presence of a base (2,6-lutidine). In addition the basic physicochemical properties of newly synthesized compounds have been investigated.

An oxidative skeletal rearrangement of 1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diamines (BINAMs) that involves the cleavage of a strong C-C single bond of the binaphthalene unit and the nitrogen migration has been discovered. The unprecedented rearrangement enables access to a series of U-shaped azaacenes otherwise difficult to prepare in a selective manner by classical methods. Moreover, physicochemical properties of the unique azaacenes have been comprehensively investigated.

Phosphorus analogues of pyrromellitic diimides (PyDIs), which represent a family of privileged electron-accepting organic compounds, have been successfully synthesized as novel electron-accepting π-conjugated molecules. Investigation into their physicochemical properties uncovered their prominent electron-accepting abilities over the corresponding PyDI. A palladium-catalyzed stereospecific and regioselective cross-coupling of enantiopure 2-arylaziridines with arylboronic acids under mild conditions to construct a tertiary stereogenic center has been developed. N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands efficiently promote the coupling, suppressing β-hydride elimination. The enantiospecific cross-coupling allowed us for preparation of a series of biologically important 2-arylphenethylamine derivatives in an enantiopure form.

A straightforward synthetic method of both symmetric and unsymmetric aromatic azo compounds through an efficient and cross-selective oxidative dimerization of aromatic amines using tert-butyl hypoiodite (t-BuOI) under metal-free and mild conditions has been developed. This method was also found applicable to the synthesis of heteroaromatic azo compounds. The spectroscopic study indicates the involvement of N,N-diiodoanilines in the oxidative reaction as the key intermediate.

Hypervalent iodine(III)-induced oxidative [4+2] annulation of o-phenylenediamines and electron-deficient alkynes under metal-free conditions has been developed. The reaction allows for direct access to quinoxalines bearing two electron-withdrawing groups in an efficient manner.

A PCy3-catalyzed ring-expansion reaction of aziridine-fused fullerenes (aziridinofullerenes) through the insertion of CO2 and aryl isocyanates is disclosed. The reaction allows for CO2 fixation by aziridinofullerenes, producing oxazolidinone-fused fullerenes (oxazolidinofullerenes) in high yields, whereas treatment with aryl isocyanates led to a new fullerene family-imidazolidinone-fused fullerenes (imidazolidinofullerenes)-in good to high yields. Furthermore, a mechanistically related unprecedented fullerenyl phosphonium salt was successfully isolated.
