One of the most important purposes of enzyme engineering is to increase the thermal and kinetic stability of enzymes, which is an important factor for using enzymes in industry. The purpose of the present study is to achieve a higher thermal stability of α-chymotrypsin (α-Chy) by modification of the solvent environment. The influence of sucrose was investigated using thermal denaturation analysis, fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism, molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results point to the effect of sucrose in enhancing the α-Chy stability. Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed one binding site that is dominated by static quenching. Molecular docking and MD simulation results indicate that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces play a major role in stabilizing the complex. T m of this complex was enhanced due to the higher H-bond formation and the lower surface hydrophobicity after sucrose modification. The results show the ability of sucrose in protecting the native structural conformation of α-Chy. Sucrose was preferentially excluded from the surface of α-Chy which is explained by the higher tendency of water toward favorable interactions with the functional groups of α-Chy than with sucrose., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. During the past 10 years, quantum tunneling has been established as one of the dominant mechanisms for recombination in random distributions of electrons and positive ions, and in many dosimetric materials. Specifically quantum tunneling has been shown to be closely associated with two important effects in luminescence materials, namely long term afterglow luminescence and anomalous fading. Two of the common assumptions of quantum tunneling models based on random distributions of electrons and positive ions are: (a) An electron tunnels from a donor to the nearest acceptor, and (b) the concentration of electrons is much lower than that of positive ions at all times during the tunneling process. This paper presents theoretical studies for arbitrary relative concentrations of electrons and positive ions in the solid. Two new differential equations are derived which describe the loss of charge in the solid by tunneling, and they are solved analytically. The analytical solution compares well with the results of Monte Carlo simulations carried out in a random distribution of electrons and positive ions. Possible experimental implications of the model are discussed for tunneling phenomena in long term afterglow signals, and also for anomalous fading studies in feldspars and apatite samples.

In this paper, a theory of fluorescence quenching in micelles which enables a dynamic approach to the evaluation of the aggregation numbers of micelles is presented. This method is based on a detailed kinetic model of quenching of fluorescent probe developed by Tachiya (1975, 1982) and takes into account that a part of quenchers are associated with micelles but the remaining quenchers are in the aqueous phase. The approach presented is an improvement on a previous fluorescence quenching method (Turro and Yekta, 1978) and is applied to determine the aggregation number of sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SAS) in aqueous dipeptide solution using cetylpyridinium chloride as quencher. We investigate reversible diffusion-influenced reactions of an isolated pair in two dimensions. To this end, we employ convolution relations that permit deriving the survival probability of the reversible reaction directly in terms of the survival probability of the irreversible reaction. Furthermore, we make use of the mean reaction time approximation to write the irreversible survival probability in restricted spaces as a single exponential. In this way, we obtain exact and approximative expressions in the time domain for the reversible survival probability for three different two dimensional spatial domains: The infinite plane, the annular domain, and the surface of a sphere. Our obtained results should prove useful in the context of membrane-bound reversible diffusion-influenced reactions in cell biology.

In the present study we explore the efficacy of caffeine in dissociating the ethidium (Et) molecule, a model DNA-intercalator as well as a potential mutagen, from nanometer sized micelles of various charges. Steady-state and picosecond-resolved spectroscopic studies on the detachment of Et from various biomimicking micelles of different charges (cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), neutral (polar) Triton X-100 (TX-100), and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)) reveal the specificity of the caffeine molecule for carrying out such dissociation. The picosecond-resolved Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies between a DNA minor groove binder dye Hoeschst 33258 (H258, donor) and Et (acceptor) have been employed to investigate the alteration in their association in the presence of caffeine at the molecular level. Analysis of our experimental results employing both the generalized and the extended version of the well-known "Infelta-Tachiya model" vividly illustrates how the distribution of Et along with the equilibrium constant of its solubilization in the micelle changes in the presence of caffeine in aqueous solution. Finally, our fluorescence micrographs of squamous epithelial cells validate the alteration of FRET efficiency between the donor and the acceptor due to the release of the latter in the presence of caffeine.

In this paper, influence of crowding by inert particles on the geminate reaction kinetics is theoretically investigated. Time evolution equations for the survival probability of a geminate pair are derived from the master equation taking into account the correlation among all diffusing particles, and the results are compared with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. In general, excluded volume interactions by the inert particles slow down the diffusive motion of reactants. However, when the initial concentration of the inert particles is uniform and high, we show that additional influence of interference between reaction and correlated diffusion accelerates the transient decay of the survival probability in the diffusion-controlled limit. We also study the escape probability for a nonuniform initial distribution of the inert particles by taking the continuous limit in space. We show that reaction yield is increased when the reaction proceeds in the presence of a positive density gradient of the inert particles which inhibits the escape of reactants. The kinetic problem of a diffusion-mediated reaction, in which minority reactants are immobile and majority reactants are mobile, is known as the target problem. The standard theory of the target problem ignores the excluded volume interaction between the mobile reactants. Recently, a new theory of the target problem was proposed where the effect of excluded volume interaction was analytically investigated using a lattice model with prohibited double occupancy of the lattice sites. The results of that theory are approximate and need verification. In this work, we perform Monte Carlo simulations on lattices and use their results to assess the accuracy of the analytical theory. We also generalize our theory to the case of different dimensionality and perform calculations for lattices in one- and two-dimensional systems. The analytical results accurately reproduce the simulation results except in the dilute limit in one dimension. In some bimolecular diffusion-controlled electron transfer (ET) reactions such as ion recombination (IR), both solvent polarization relaxation and the mutual diffusion of the reacting ion pair may determine the rate and even the yield of the reaction. However, a full treatment with these two reaction coordinates is a challenging task and has been left mostly unsolved. In this work, we address this problem by developing a dynamic theory by combining the ideas from ET reaction literature and barrierless chemical reactions. Two-dimensional coupled Smoluchowski equations are employed to compute the time evolution of joint probability distribution for the reactant (P((1))(X,R,t)) and the product (P((2))(X,R,t)), where X, as is usual in ET reactions, describes the solvent polarization coordinate and R is the distance between the reacting ion pair. The reaction is described by a reaction line (sink) which is a function of X and R obtained by imposing a condition of equal energy on the initial and final states of a reacting ion pair. The resulting two-dimensional coupled equations of motion have been solved numerically using an alternate direction implicit (ADI) scheme (Peaceman and Rachford, J. Soc. Ind. Appl. Math. 1955, 3, 28). The results reveal interesting interplay between polarization relaxation and translational dynamics. The following new results have been obtained. (i) For solvents with slow longitudinal polarization relaxation, the escape probability decreases drastically as the polarization relaxation time increases. We attribute this to caging by polarization of the surrounding solvent. As expected, for the solvents having fast polarization relaxation, the escape probability is independent of the polarization relaxation time. (ii) In the slow relaxation limit, there is a significant dependence of escape probability and average rate on the initial solvent polarization, again displaying the effects of polarization caging. Escape probability increases, and the average rate decreases on increasing the initial polarization. Again, in the fast polarization relaxation limit, there is no effect of initial polarization on the escape probability and the average rate of IR. (iii) For normal and barrierless regions the dependence of escape probability and the rate of IR on initial polarization is stronger than in the inverted region. (iv) Because of the involvement of dynamics along R coordinate, the asymmetrical parabolic (that is, non-Marcus) energy gap dependence of the rate is observed.

By applying diffuse reflectance transient absorption spectroscopy to dye-sensitized solar cells under operational conditions, we were able to directly correlate interfacial electron injection kinetics from a Ru complex sensitizer to a TiO(2) nanocrystalline electrode with the incident photon to current efficiency values. It was revealed that ionic liquid electrolytes reduced the initial electron injection efficiency by suppression of the approximately 100 ps process.

The theory of diffusion-mediated reactions is already established for the target problem in the dilute limit, where the immobile target is surrounded by many quenchers. For lattice random walks in the crowded situation, each quencher is surrounded by other quenchers differently. As a result, each quencher migrates differently in the presence of site blocking effects. However, in the conventional theory, such difference is ignored and quenchers are assumed to move independently of each other. In this paper, theory of diffusion-mediated reactions of target problem is developed by taking into account the site blocking effects for quencher migration and the difference in the configuration of quenchers around each quencher. Our result interpolates between those in high and low limits of quencher concentrations and is a lower bound of the survival probability. In the static limit, the exact result is reproduced for a localized sink. In the presence of diffusion, the approximation is better when intrinsic reaction rates are low.

Recently single photon emission has been observed for systems in which multiple excitons are generated by pulsed excitation. When fast pair annihilation of excitons takes place, finally a single exciton remains and single photon can be emitted. Its efficiency depends on the competition among pair annihilation, unimolecular nonradiative, and radiative processes. The efficiency of single photon emission is usually studied by measuring the correlation of emitted photons after pulsed excitation by the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss method. The photon correlation measured in this method is different from that calculated by taking into account all pairs of emitted photons, which was presented in a previous paper. We calculate the former rigorously for the first time in the case of multiple excitations and compare it with the latter. We also calculate correlation of arrival times of two photons by the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss method. These results should be useful for the analysis of the antibunching measurement by the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss method.

Recent development in single molecule spectroscopy enabled us to measure the decay kinetics of individual excited probes surrounded by randomly distributed quenchers. Since the distribution of quenchers around individual excited probes change from one excited probe to another, the quenching rate constant also changes from one excited probe to another. We calculated the distribution of quenching rate constants of individual excited probes theoretically and analyzed the observed distributions of quenching rate constants, which were recently measured by Lupton et al. [J. Phys. Chem. C 111, 11511 (2007)] by using single molecule spectroscopy.

This paper deals with the exact extension of the original Onsager theory of the escape probability to the case of finite recombination rate at nonzero reaction radius. The empirical theories based on the Eigen model and the Braun model, which are applicable in the absence and presence of an external electric field, respectively, are based on a wrong assumption that both recombination and separation processes in geminate recombination follow exponential kinetics. The accuracies of the empirical theories are examined against the exact extension of the Onsager theory. The Eigen model gives the escape probability in the absence of an electric field, which is different by a factor of 3 from the exact one. We have shown that this difference can be removed by operationally redefining the volume occupied by the dissociating partner before dissociation, which appears in the Eigen model as a parameter. The Braun model gives the escape probability in the presence of an electric field, which is significantly different from the exact one over the whole range of electric fields. Appropriate modification of the original Braun model removes the discrepancy at zero or low electric fields, but it does not affect the discrepancy at high electric fields. In all the above theories it is assumed that recombination takes place only at the reaction radius. The escape probability in the case when recombination takes place over a range of distances is also calculated and compared with that in the case of recombination only at the reaction radius.

The photon emission statistics from a single molecule containing multichromophores under pulsed excitation is theoretically studied. Fast nonradiative pair annihilation of excitons efficiently produces a single exciton, which acts as a single photon emitter. By taking into account the discrete nature of exciton numbers and the competition among pair annihilation, and unimolecular radiative and nonradiative decay of excitons, we obtain analytical expressions of photon emission statistics, the average number of emitted photons, and the normalized photon pair correlation which represents the ratio of the number of photon pairs created by the same pulse to that created by different pulses. The normalized photon pair correlation is influenced by the ratio of the pair annihilation rate to the total unimolecular decay rate including both radiative and nonradiative processes but is not influenced by the ratio of the unimolecular radiative and nonradiative rates. On the other hand, the single photon emission intensity depends on the ratio of the unimolecular radiative and nonradiative rates from the exciton left alone after pair annihilation. The conclusion is consistent with recent experimental results on conjugated polymers with various sizes in different host materials.

The diffusion-influenced reversible reaction of a neutral particle and a charged particle in an external field is analytically solved in three dimensions. A generalized nonisotropic boundary condition is used and a kinetic equation for the probability density function is set up. A tridiagonal matrix equation is derived for the coefficients of the series solution and we obtain the solution within the diagonal approximation in the Laplace domain. We also find that the long time asymptotic behavior of the first term solution shows a kinetic transition from a power law to an exponential behavior as the field strength is increased. The full numerical calculation reveals that the first term solution deviates slightly at short times but gives good result at long times. Thus it contributes dominantly to the kinetic transition behavior at long times. For the irreversible limit, we find a different kinetic transition behavior from a power law to an exponential increase through a constant in the transition region for the initially bound state.

We study direct energy transfer by multipolar or exchange interactions between diffusive excited donor and diffusive unexcited acceptors. Extending over the case of long-range transfer of an excitation energy a nonperturbative approach by Bray and Blythe [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 150601 (2002)], originally developed for contact diffusion-controlled reactions, we determine exactly long-time asymptotics of the donor decay function in one-dimensional systems.

Barrierless chemical reactions have often been modeled as a Brownian motion on a one-dimensional harmonic potential energy surface with a position-dependent reaction sink or window located near the minimum of the surface. This simple (but highly successful) description leads to a nonexponential survival probability only at small to intermediate times but exponential decay in the long-time limit. However, in several reactive events involving proteins and glasses, the reactions are found to exhibit a strongly nonexponential (power law) decay kinetics even in the long time. In order to address such reactions, here, we introduce a model of barrierless chemical reaction where the motion along the reaction coordinate sustains dispersive diffusion. A complete analytical solution of the model can be obtained only in the frequency domain, but an asymptotic solution is obtained in the limit of long time. In this case, the asymptotic long-time decay of the survival probability is a power law of the Mittag-Leffler functional form. When the barrier height is increased, the decay of the survival probability still remains nonexponential, in contrast to the ordinary Brownian motion case where the rate is given by the Smoluchowski limit of the well-known Kramers' expression. Interestingly, the reaction under dispersive diffusion is shown to exhibit strong dependence on the initial state of the system, thus predicting a strong dependence on the excitation wavelength for photoisomerization reactions in a dispersive medium. The theory also predicts a fractional viscosity dependence of the rate, which is often observed in the reactions occurring in complex environments.

The interaction of trans-resveratrol (TRES) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy (FS) with Tachiya model. The binding number maximum of TRES was determined to be 8.86 at 293.15 K, 23.42 at 303.15 K and 33.94 at 313.15 K and the binding mechanism analyzed in detail. The apparent binding constants (K (a)) between TRES and BSA were 5.02 x 10(4) (293.15 K), 8.89 x 10(4) (303.15 K) and 1.60 x 10(5) L mol(-1) (313.15 K), and the binding distances (r) between TRES and BSA were 2.44, 3.01, and 3.38 nm at 293.15, 303.15, and 313.15 K, respectively. The addition of TRES to BSA solution leads to the enhancement in RLS intensity, exhibiting the formation of the aggregate in solution. The negative entropy change and enthalpy change indicated that the interaction of TRES and BSA was driven mainly by van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonds. The process of binding was a spontaneous process in which Gibbs free energy change was negative.

The Ivanov-Anderson model (and an earlier treatment by Kubo) envisages a decay of the orientational correlation by random but large amplitude molecular jumps, as opposed to infinitesimal small jumps assumed in Brownian diffusion. Recent computer simulation studies on water and viscous liquids have shown that large amplitude motions may indeed be more of a rule than exception. Existing theoretical studies on jump diffusion mostly assume an exponential (Poissonian) waiting time distribution for jumps, thereby again leading to an exponential decay. Here we extend the existing formalism of Ivanov and Anderson to include an algebraic waiting time distribution between two jumps. As a result, the first (l=1) and second (l=2) rank orientational time correlation functions show the same long time power law, but their short time decay behavior is quite different. The predicted Cole-Cole plot of dielectric relaxation reproduces various features of non-Debye behavior observed experimentally. We also developed a theory where both unrestricted small jumps and large angular jumps coexist simultaneously. The small jumps are shown to have a large effect on the long time decay, particularly in mitigating the effects of algebraic waiting time distribution, and in giving rise to an exponential-like decay, with a time constant, surprisingly, less than the time constant that arises from small amplitude decay alone.

By using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with visible pump and IR probe to observe generation of injected electrons, we could directly observe plasmon-induced electron transfer from 10 nm gold nanodots to TiO2 nanocrystalline film. It was revealed that the reaction time was within 240 fs and the yield was about 40%.

We investigate the energy gap law of electron transfer in nonpolar solvents for charge separation and charge recombination reactions. In polar solvents, the reaction coordinate is given in terms of the electrostatic potentials from solvent permanent dipoles at solutes. In nonpolar solvents, the energy fluctuation due to solvent polarization is absent, but the energy of the ion pair state changes significantly with the distance between the ions as a result of the unscreened strong Coulomb potential. The electron transfer occurs when the final state energy coincides with the initial state energy. For charge separation reactions, the initial state is a neutral pair state, and its energy changes little with the distance between the reactants, whereas the final state is an ion pair state and its energy changes significantly with the mutual distance; for charge recombination reactions, vice versa. We show that the energy gap law of electron-transfer rates in nonpolar solvents significantly depends on the type of electron transfer.

The mechanism of exciplex formation proposed in a previous paper has been refined to show how exciplex formation and Marcus electron transfer (ET) in fluorescence quenching are related to each other. This was done by making simple calculations of the free energies of the initial (DA*) and final (D+A-) states of ET. First it was shown that the decrease in D-A distance can induce intermolecular ET even in nonpolar solvents where solvent orientational polarization is absent, and that it leads to exciplex formation. This is consistent with experimental results that exciplex is most often observed in nonpolar solvents. The calculation was then extended to ET in polar solvents where the free energies are functions of both D-A distance and solvent orientational polarization. This enabled us to discuss both exciplex formation and Marcus ET in the same D-A pair and solvent on the basis of 2-dimensional free energy surfaces. The surfaces contain more information about the rates of these reactions, the mechanism of fluorescence quenching by ET, etc., than simple reaction schemes. By changing the parameters such as the free energy change of reaction, solvent dielectric constants, etc., one can construct the free energy surfaces for various systems. The effects of free energy change of reaction and of solvent polarity on the mechanism and relative importance of exciplex formation and Marcus ET in fluorescence quenching can be well explained. The free energy surface will also be useful for discussion of other phenomena related to ET reactions.

A numerical solution for competitive diffusion into two static charged sinks is presented and compared against an approximate analytical solution. It is shown that for an attractive Coulomb potential the correction to the total diffusive flux of ionic reactants due to diffusion interaction between sinks may be ignored for large enough values of the Onsager length and thus the reaction rate can be described by the classical Debye formula. On the other hand, for repulsive potentials the competition becomes more profound than in the case of uncharged sinks. However, this effect is of little interest because of a small value of the diffusive flux on the reaction surface.

The transient absorption of nanocrystalline TiO(2) films in the visible and IR wavelength regions was measured under the weak-excitation condition, where the second-order electron-hole recombination process can be ignored. The intrinsic dynamics of the electron-hole pairs in the femtosecond to picosecond time range was elucidated. Surface-trapped electrons and surface-trapped holes were generated within approximately 200 fs (time resolution). Surface-trapped electrons, which gave an absorption peak at around 800 nm, and bulk electrons, which absorbed in the IR wavelength region, decayed with a 500-ps time constant due to relaxation into deep bulk trapping sites. It is already known that, after this relaxation, electrons and holes survive for microseconds. We interpreted these long lifetimes in terms of the prompt spatial charge separation of electrons in the bulk and holes at the surface.

The authors extend their previous work published in Leontyev and TachiyaJ. Chem. Phys. 123, 224502 (2005) and study not only forward but also reverse electron transfer between pyrene and dimethylaniline in a nonpolar solvent, n-hexane. The distribution function methodology and molecular dynamics technique adopted in their previous work are used. Two algorithms (I and II) are formulated for obtaining the reorganization energy and the solvation free energy difference in the linear response approximation. The two algorithms are combined with different cutoff schemes and tested for polarizable and nonpolarizable solvent models. Agreement between the results obtained by the two algorithms was achieved only for simulations employing the particle mesh Ewald treatment. It is concluded that algorithm I provides a reliable scheme for evaluation of the reorganization energy and the solvation free energy difference. Moreover, a new algorithm referred to as the G-function algorithm is formulated which does not assume the linear response approximation, and is tested on evaluation of the solvation free energy difference. Agreement between the results from the G-function algorithm and those from algorithms I and II is fairly good, although it depends on the degree of statistical consistency of the simulations. In the case of nonpolar solvents the G-function method has practical importance because, unlike the conventional thermodynamic integration approach, it requires equilibrium molecular configuration ensembles only for the initial and final states of the system.

In the present paper the authors present a theoretical model to explain the kinetics involving the induction period observed by Irie et al. [Nature (London) 420, 759 (2002)] for photoisomerization of diarylethene derivatives dispersed on polymer films at a single molecular level. In the model we assume that both ground state and excited state free energy landscapes which result from the interaction between the photochromic molecule and the surrounding polymer are rugged and have several local minima along the pathway to the critical point at which isomerization actually occurs. We assume that after one photoexcitation a fraction of the photochromic molecule moves to a new local minimum and stays there, although the other fraction returns to the original local minimum. The former effect is referred to as the memory effect. After repeated photoexcitations the photochromic molecule moves gradually from one local minimum to another in the pathway to the isomerization point. It finally reaches the isomerization point, where isomerization occurs. Their model successfully reproduces the kinetics of photoisomerization of diarylethene derivatives dispersed on polymer films observed experimentally.

It is rather difficult to design a multilayer photocurrent generator system on the ITO electrode, however, the preparation of thin film with high surface concentration of donor units is indispensable in order to achieve high conversion efficiency. The polymer film of porphyrin bearing pyroles on the electrode was prepared by the potential sweep method. It was indicated that the self-aggregation can be suppressed by encapsulation of the porphyrin unit in the cavity of macro-cyclic host molecule, cyclodextrin. We established the non-equilibrium host-guest system with porphyrins and cyclodextrins for the first time. The photocurrent density and the quantum yield in the porphyrin-cyclodextrin system are remarkably improved. It was demonstrated that the high quantum yield, perhaps 25 times larger, arises from the isolation of the porphyrin unit by cyclodextrin through host-guest interactions.

Zn(II)porphyrin-substituted calix[4]arene 1 serves as molecular tweezers for 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2] octane (DABCO) selectively, which led to the formation of Ensemble I. The molecular segments composing the calixarene cavity change upon inclusion of DABCO as Ensemble I were evaluated through (13)C NMR longitudinal relaxation times (T(1)) for the first time. As for Ensemble I, the 1:1 complex should be formed. The T(1) values for Ensemble I are generally smaller than those for 1: in CDCl(2)CDCl(2), DT1 = 5.03 s for C-1, 5.31 s for C-2, 0.13 s for C-3, 0.7 s for C-4, and 0.16 s for C-5. This substantiates that the rings of Ensemble I are firmly freezed because of the two-point coordination by DABCO. In 1, the T1 values for C-3 are always greater than those for C-4, and the difference between C-3 and C-4 is slight. As for Ensemble I, on the other hand, the difference between C-3 and C-4 is large. We can suggest two different motions for phenol units in 1 and Ensemble I: a rotational motion around a C-1 to C-4 axis (A) and a seesaw motion around a C-2 to C-2' axis (B). The data indicate that in Ensemble I motion (A) is predominant over motion (B). This indicates that motion (B) is specifically suppressed because of the two-point coordination interactions in Ensemble I.

A new calixarene-based donor-acceptor system, cone conformer 1, was prepared for the first time. In this compound, the calix[4]arene serves to juxtapose a tri-chloroquinone acceptor near the porphyrin photo-donor plane. As to the conformational control, the cone conformer 1 gave two peaks of phenolic OH groups at 8.40 and 8.43 ppm. This shows that cone conformer 1 is stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The fluorescence intensity of 1 was 35% of that for the control compound 2. This means the tri-chloroquinone group in 1 efficiently quenched the fluorescence of ZnP*. The shortest edge-to-edge separation of the chromophores of 1 is ca. 8 A (as judged by CPK models). This provides a new calixarene-based supramolecular system in which through-space donor-to-acceptor electron transfer is observed upon photoexcitation.

We report on the selective ionization of oriented nonpolar molecules with asymmetric structure by using phase-controlled two-color omega + 2omega laser pulses with an intensity of 1.0 x 10(13) W/cm(2) (tunneling ionization regime) and a pulse duration of 130 fs. The orientation of 1-bromo-2-chloroethane was monitored by the directional asymmetries of the forward-backward emission in dissociative ionization. The observed direction of orientation clearly confirms that molecular orientation is induced not by dynamic orientation but by selective ionization of oriented molecules, which reflects the structure of the highest occupied molecular orbital. This method can be applied for the vast majority of molecules.

A stochastic model of triplet exciton dynamics in multichromophoric conjugated polymers is presented and analyzed in detail, with a focus on the single molecule spectroscopy observables. The model deals with the evolution of a discrete statistical distribution of triplets in isolated polymer molecules. This approach should provide more accurate quantitative information on the dynamic processes involved, as compared to the previously used two-state model which assumes that a conjugated polymer cannot contain more than one triplet. In particular, it allows for determination of the triplet-triplet annihilation rate.

We consider electron injection into the conduction band of a semiconductor, from an electronically excited state of a dye molecule, adsorbed on its surface. For arbitrary width of the conduction band, the survival probability of the excited state can be calculated using a Green's-function approach. We show that the existence of a split-off state can play an important role in the total injection probability. In the wide band limit, the survival probability decays exponentially, but for finite band widths it does not. We further investigate the effect of vibrations on the process. A Green's operator technique may be used to solve this too exactly. We show that the problem may be reduced to a non-Hermitian eigenvalue problem for the vibrational states alone. Exact results can be obtained for arbitrary bandwidth and for a few vibrational degrees of freedom. In the wide band limit, the dynamics is particularly simple and we find that (1) the survival probability of the excited state is unchanged by the inclusion of vibrational motion, but (2) each vibrational state now has a finite lifetime. Numerical results are presented for the effects of reorganization energy, energy of the injecting level, and the variation of the matrix element for the electron injection, on the survival probability of the electron in the excited state. As an illustration of the approach, we also present results of numerical calculation of the absorption spectrum of perylene adsorbed on TiO(2) and compare it with experimental results.

The photoluminescence in amorphous semiconductors decays according to the power law t(-delta) at long times. The photoluminescence is controlled by dispersive transport of electrons. The latter is usually characterized by the power alpha of the transient current observed in the time-of-flight experiments. Geminate recombination occurs by radiative tunneling which has a distance dependence. In this paper, we formulate ways to calculate reaction rates and survival probabilities in the case carriers execute dispersive diffusion with long-range reactivity. The method is applied to obtain tunneling recombination rates under dispersive diffusion. The theoretical condition of observing the relation delta=alpha/2+1 is obtained and theoretical recombination rates are compared to the kinetics of observed photoluminescence decay in the whole time range measured.

Coherent phase control of the photodissociation reaction of the dimethylsulfide has been achieved by means of quantum-mechanical interference between one- and three-photon transitions. Dimethylsulfide was irradiated by fundamental and frequency-tripled outputs of a visible laser (600.5-602.5 nm), simultaneously to yield CH3S+ and CH3SCH2+ fragment ions. The branching ratio of the two product channels could be modulated with variation of the phase difference between the light fields. This accounted for the difference between the molecular phases of the two product channels. The phase lag was observed to have a maximum value of 8 degrees at 601.5 nm. This is the first result of a selective bond breaking in a polyatomic molecule by the coherent phase control.

To investigate the primary process of photocatalytic oxidation of TiO2, interfacial charge-transfer reaction of trapped holes formed in nanocrystalline TiO2 films by UV irradiation was directly measured by highly sensitive femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy under low intensity excitation condition to avoid fast electron-hole recombination. Accordingly, the rates and yields of photocatalytic oxidation of several alcohols adsorbed on TiO2 were evaluated successfully.

The intermolecular electron transfer in a solute pair consisting of pyrene and dimethylaniline is investigated in a nonpolar solvent, n-hexane. The earlier elaborated approach [M. Tachiya, J. Phys Chem. 97, 5911 (1993)] is used; this method provides a physically relevant background for separating inertial and inertialess polarization responses for both nonpolarizable and polarizable molecular level simulations. The molecular-dynamics technique was implemented for obtaining the equilibrium ensemble of solvent configurations. The nonpolar solvent, n-hexane, was treated in terms of OPLS-AA parametrization. Solute Lennard-Jones parameters were taken from the same parametrization. Solute charge distributions of the initial and final states were determined using ab initio level [HF/6-31G(d,p)] quantum-chemical calculations. Configuration analysis was performed explicitly taking into account the anisotropic polarizability of n-hexane. It is shown that the Gaussian law well describes calculated distribution functions of the solvent coordinate, therefore, the rate constant of the ET reaction can be characterized by the reorganization energy. Evaluated values of the reorganization energies are in a range of 0.03-0.11 eV and significant contribution (more then 40% of magnitude) comes from anisotropic polarizability. Investigation of the reorganization energy lambda dependence on the solute pair separation distance d revealed unexpected behavior. The dependence has a very sharp peak at the distance d=7 A where solvent molecules are able to penetrate into the intermediate space between the solute pair. The reason for such behavior is clarified. This new effect has a purely molecular origin and cannot be described within conventional continuum solvent models.

Recently, ultrafast two-photon photoemission has been used to study electron solvation at a two-dimensional metalpolar adsorbate interfaces [A. Miller et al., Science 297, 1163 (2002)]. The electron is bound to the surface by the image interaction. Earlier we have suggested a theoretical description of the states of the electron interacting with a two-dimensional layer of the polar adsorbate [K. L. Sebastian et al., J. Chem. Phys. 119, 10350 (2003)]. In this paper we have analyzed the dynamics of electron solvation, assuming a trial wave function for the electron and the solvent polarization and then using the Dirac-Frenkel variational method to determine it. The electron is initially photoexcited to a delocalized state, which has a finite but large size, and causes the polar molecules to reorient. This reorientation acts back on the electron and causes its wave function to shrink, which will cause further reorientation of the polar molecules, and the process continues until the electron gets self-trapped. For reasonable values for the parameters, we are able to obtain fair agreement with the experimental observations.

The dynamics of ultrafast electron injection from a coumarin derivative (NKX-2311), which is an efficient photosensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cells, into the conduction band of TiO(2) nanocrystalline films have been investigated by means of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in a wide wavelength range from 600 nm to 10 mum. In the absence of Li(+) ions, electron injection into the TiO(2) conduction band occurred in about 300 fs. In the presence of Li(+) ions, however, electron injection occurred within approximately 100 fs, and the oxidized dye generated was found to interact with nearby Li(+) ions. Possible positions of Li(+) ion attachment to the dye molecule were examined by means of semiempirical molecular orbital calculations. The electron injection efficiency was found to increase by a factor of 1.37 in the presence of Li(+) ions. The effects of Li(+) ions on the energy of the TiO(2) conduction band and the electronic interaction between the dye molecule and Li(+) ions are discussed, and the major cause for the acceleration of electron injection was suggested to be a conduction-band shift of TiO(2).

In this paper, we study the fluorescence fluctuation correlation function in structured fluids where the diffusion coefficients of probe molecules have different values depending on the distance from initial position, and we derive two simple expressions. Both of them reproduce the exact numerical results rather accurately. One of the expressions contains a time-dependent diffusion coefficient and has a clear physical meaning. We show a procedure to analyze experimental data using the time-dependent diffusion coefficient which results from crossover from free diffusion inside a mesh to hindered diffusion through mesh structures.

In this paper we investigate theoretically the effect of an external electric field on the rate constant of steady-state bulk diffusion-controlled reactions. We generalize previously derived results for isotropic diffusion in the absence of interparticle interaction [J. Chem. Phys. 87, 4622 (1987)] to the case where translational diffusion is anisotropic. A frequently occurring situation of transverse isotropy where D(x)=D(y) not equal to D(z) is considered in detail. We derive the first-order expansion for the reaction rate constant in terms of the electric field strength E, k(E)=k(0) (1+1/2epsilongamma), where gamma=k(0)/4piRD( perpendicular ), epsilon=qER/k(B)T, q is the charge, R is the contact distance, and D( perpendicular ) is the transverse diffusion coefficient. Numerical calculations show that this first-order expansion works well in the whole range of applicability of the Nernst-Einstein relation, i.e., for epsilon<1., ((c) 2004 American Institute of Physics.)

We have investigated coherent control of the dissociative ionization of IBr using phase-controlled two-color omega+2omega laser pulses with an intensity of 1.0 x 10(12) W/cm and a pulse duration of 130 fs. The directional asymmetries of the photofragment angular distributions showed oscillation behavior dependent on the relative phase difference between the omega and 2omega pulses. The phase dependencies of the directional asymmetries observed for iodine ions and bromine ions were out of phase with each other. This result shows that a phase-controlled omega+2omega optical field can produce molecular orientation in which the optical field discriminates between parallel and antiparallel configuration of molecules that have a permanent dipole.

This review is focused on the basic theory of diffusion-assisted reactions in microheterogeneous systems, from porous solids to self-organized colloids and biomolecules. Rich kinetic behaviors observed experimentally are explained in a unified fashion using simple concepts of competing distance and time scales of the reaction and the embedding structure. We mainly consider pseudo-first-order reactions, such as luminescence quenching, described by the Smoluchowski type of equation for the reactant pair distribution function with a sink term defined by the reaction mechanism. Microheterogeneity can affect the microscopic rate constant. It also enters the evolution equation through various spatial constraints leading to complicated boundary conditions and, possibly, to the reduction of dimensionality of the diffusion space. The reaction coordinate and diffusive motion along this coordinate are understood in a general way, depending on the problem at hand. Thus, the evolution operator can describe translational and rotational diffusion of molecules in a usual sense, it can be a discrete random walk operator when dealing with hopping of adsorbates in solids, or it can correspond to conformational fluctuations in proteins. Mathematical formulation is universal but physical consequences can be different. Understanding the principal features of reaction kinetics in microheterogeneous systems enables one to extract important structural and dynamical information about the host environments by analyzing suitably designed experiments, it helps building effective strategies for computer simulations, and ultimately opens possibilities for designing systems with controllable reactivity properties.

In biological systems, because of higher intracellular viscosity and/or the restriction of the diffusion space inside cells, the (apparent) diffusion coefficient of an intracellular species (e.g., water) is generally smaller than when it is in the extracellular medium. This difference affects the spin-echo signal attenuation in the pulsed field gradient NMR experiment and thus affords a means of separating the intracellular from the extracellular species, thereby providing a basis for studying transmembrane transport. Such experiments have commonly been analyzed using the macroscopic model of Kärger (see Adv. Magn. Reson. 21:1-89 (1988)). In our previous study, we considered a microscopic model of diffusive transport through a spherical interface using the short gradient pulse approximation (J. Magn. Reson. A114:39-46 (1995)). The spins in the external medium were modeled with the "partially absorbing wall" condition or as having a small but finite lifetime. In the present paper, we extend our treatment to the case in which there is no limitation upon the lifetime in either medium. We also consider a simple modification of Kärger's model that more properly accounts for the restricted intracellular diffusion. Importantly, it was found that the exact solution within the short gradient pulse approximation developed here and the modified Kärger model are in close agreement in the (experimentally relevant) long-time limit. The results of this study show that when there is no limitation upon the lifetime of the transported species in either phase, the spin-echo attenuation curve is very sensitive to transport.

A stochastic model for migration dynamics of solute molecules from the bulk aqueous phase to the intravesicular water pool is developed with a goal to interpret recent passive permeability measurements of bilayer membranes. Previously neglected fluctuations of the number of solubilized species in the inner water pool of a vesicle are naturally incorporated into the model. For a homogeneous one-phase bilayer, the model predicts exponential long-time asymptotics of the migration dynamics with a rate constant given by a sum of the frequencies of exit and entry of a solute molecule from/into the intravesicular water pool into/from the bulk aqueous phase. The long-time constant is directly related to the membrane permeability.
