The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to provide an accurate description of the effect of Ramadan observance on sleep duration, sleep quality, daily nap duration, and daytime sleepiness in athletes and physically active individuals. Five electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Wiley, and Taylor and Francis) were used to search for relevant studies conducted with athletes or physically active individuals during Ramadan, published in any language, and available before May 23, 2021. Studies that included assessments of sleep quantity and/or quality, and/or daytime sleepiness, and/or daily naps in athletes and physically active individuals were included. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using "QualSyst". Of the 18 papers included in this study (298 participants in total), 14 were of strong quality, two were moderate, and the remaining two were rated as weak. Individuals who continued to train during Ramadan experienced a decrease in sleep duration (number of studies, K = 17, number of participants, N = 289, g = -0.766, 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.199 to -0.333, p = 0.001). Additionally, the global score of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index increased from 4.053 (K = 5, N = 65, 95% CI 3.071-5.034) pre-Ramadan, to 5.346 (95% CI 4.362-6.333) during Ramadan, indicating a decrease in sleep quality. The duration of daytime naps increased during compared to pre-Ramadan (K = 2, N = 31, g = 1.020, 95% CI 0.595-1.445, p = 0.000), whereas Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores remained unchanged during versus pre-Ramadan (K = 3, N = 31, g = 0.190, 95% CI -0.139-0.519, p = 0.257). In conclusion, individuals who continued to train during Ramadan experienced a decrease in sleep duration, impairment of sleep quality, and increase in daytime nap duration, with no change in daytime sleepiness levels., (© 2021 The Authors. Introduction: Whether acute caffeine supplementation can offset the negative effects of one-night of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on endurance exercise performance is currently unknown., Methods: Ten healthy recreational male runners (age: 27 ± 6 years; V ˙ O 2 max : 61 ± 9 mL/kg/min) completed 4 trials in a balanced Latin square design, which were PSD + caffeine (PSD-Caf), PSD + placebo (PSD-Pla), normal sleep (NS) + caffeine (NS-Caf) and NS + placebo (NS-Pla). 3 and 8 h sleep windows were scheduled in PSD and NS, respectively. 10-km treadmill time trial (TT) performance was assessed 45 min after caffeine (6 mg/kg/body mass)/placebo supplementation in the morning following PSD/NS. Blood glucose, lactate, free fatty acid and glycerol were measured at pre-supplementation, pre-exercise and after exercise., Results: PSD resulted in compromised TT performance compared to NS in the placebo conditions by 5% (51.9 ± 7.7 vs. 49.4 ± 6.9 min, p = 0.001). Caffeine improved TT performance compared to placebo following both PSD by 7.7% (PSD-Caf: 47.9 ± 7.3 min vs. PSD-Pla: 51.9 ± 7.7 min, p = 0.007) and NS by 2.8% (NS-Caf: 48.0 ± 6.4 min vs. NS-Pla: 49.4 ± 6.9 min, p = 0.049). TT performance following PSD-Caf was not different from either NS-Pla or NS-Caf (p = 0.185 and p = 0.891, respectively). Blood glucose, lactate, and glycerol concentrations at post-exercise, as well as heart rate and the speed/RPE ratio during TT, were higher in caffeine trials compared to placebo., Conclusions: Caffeine supplementation offsets the negative effects of one-night PSD on 10-km running performance., (© 2024. Considering the main component of cardiovascular disease and due to the high prevalence of hypertension, controlling blood pressure is required in individuals with various health conditions. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) which studied the effects of pomegranate consumption on blood pressure have shown inconsistent findings. As a result, we intended to assess the effects of pomegranate consumption on systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure in adults. Systematic literature searches up to January 2024 were carried out using electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, to identify eligible RCTs assessing the effects of pomegranate on blood pressure as an outcome. All the individuals who took part in our research were adults who consumed pomegranate in different forms as part of the study intervention. Heterogeneity tests of the selected trials were performed using the I 2 statistic. Random effects models were assessed based on the heterogeneity tests, and pooled data were determined as the weighted mean difference (WMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Of 2315 records, 22 eligible RCTs were included in the current study. Our meta-analysis of the pooled findings showed that pomegranate consumption significantly reduced SBP (WMD: -7.87 mmHg; 95% CI: -10.34 to -5.39; p < 0.001) and DBP (WMD: -3.23 mmHg; 95% CI: -5.37 to -1.09; p = 0.003). Individuals with baseline SBP > 130 mmHg had a significantly greater reduction in SBP compared to individuals with baseline SBP < 130 mmHg. Also, there was a high level of heterogeneity among studies (SBP: I 2  = 90.0% and DBP: I 2  = 91.8%). Overall, the results demonstrated that pomegranate consumption lowered SBP and DBP in adults. Although our results suggest that pomegranate juice may be effective in reducing blood pressure in the pooled data, further high-quality studies are needed to demonstrate the clinical efficacy of pomegranate consumption., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

This study aims to investigate the impact of a 40-min nap opportunity on perceived recovery, exertion, and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) following the 5-m shuttle run test (5SRT), after 1 night of normal sleep. In a randomised, counterbalanced, cross-over design, 17 trained men (mean [SD] age 20 [3] years, height 173 [6] cm, body mass 68 [6] kg) performed a 5SRT under two conditions: a 40-min nap opportunity and no-nap condition. After both conditions, electromyography signals during a 5-s isometric knee extension were recorded before and immediately after the 5SRT. Two electrical nerve stimulations at the femoral nerve were measured during and after the MVIC. Force, voluntary activation level, M-wave amplitudes, potentiated twitch, and electromyography signals (root mean square) were measured during each MVIC. Perceived exertion was recorded after each repetition of the test and perceived recovery was determined after the end of the MVIC. Compared to the no-nap condition, the 40-min nap resulted in significant enhancements in both the highest distance (p < 0.01, Δ = +7.6%) and total distance (p < 0.01, Δ = +7.5%). Before and after exercise, values for MVIC, root mean square, M-wave amplitudes, and voluntary activation level were improved after the 40-min nap opportunity compared to no-nap condition (all p ≤ 0.01). Values for perceived exertion and recovery were improved after the 40-min nap opportunity in comparison with no-nap condition (p ≤ 0.01). A 40-min nap opportunity improved repeated high-intensity short-term maximal performance, perceived recovery, associated neuromuscular responses, and reduced perceived fatigue. Abstract: Kang, J, Ratamess, NA, Faigenbaum, AD, Bush, JA, Finnerty, C, DiFiore, M, Garcia, A, and Beller, N. Time-of-day effects of exercise on cardiorespiratory responses and endurance performance-A systematic review and meta-analysis. J Strength Cond Res 37(10): 2080-2090, 2023-The time-of-day effect of exercise on human function remains largely equivocal. Hence, this study aimed to further analyze the existing evidence concerning diurnal variations in cardiorespiratory responses and endurance performance using a meta-analytic approach. Literature search was conducted through databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Article selection was made based on inclusion criteria concerning subjects' characteristics, exercise protocols, times of testing, and targeted dependent variables. Results on oxygen uptake (V̇ o2 ), heart rate (HR), respiratory exchange ratio, and endurance performance in the morning (AM) and late afternoon or evening (PM) were extracted from the chosen studies. Meta-analysis was conducted with the random-effects model. Thirty-one original research studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. Meta-analysis revealed higher resting V̇ o2 (Hedges' g = -0.574; p = 0.040) and resting HR (Hedges' g = -1.058; p = 0.002) in PM than in AM. During exercise, although V̇ o2 remained indifferent between AM and PM, HR was higher in PM at submaximal (Hedges' g = -0.199; p = 0.046) and maximal (Hedges' g = -0.298; p = 0.001) levels. Endurance performance as measured by time-to-exhaustion or the total work accomplished was higher in PM than in AM (Hedges' g = -0.654; p = 0.001). Diurnal variations in V̇ o2 appear less detectable during aerobic exercise. The finding that exercising HR and endurance performance were greater in PM than in AM emphasizes the need to consider the effect of circadian rhythm when evaluating athletic performance or using HR as a criterion to assess fitness or monitor training., (Copyright © 2023 National Strength and Conditioning Association.)

Along the coastline, urbanisation and industrialization pose significant challenges to marine habitats and biodiversity. Most wastewater that reaches the marine environment contains toxic metals, which, as they are non-biodegradable, accumulate in the biota and enter the marine food chain. This study presents the concentration of nine heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Cd) in zooplankton (copepods) during the Spring Intermonsoon/Pre-Monsoon (April 2019) in the western Bay of Bengal (BoB). Higher Fe concentrations were found in copepods both nearshore (42,352 µg/g) and offshore (9835 µg/g). However, the relative amounts of heavy metals in copepods from 16 locations (eight nearshore and eight offshore) varied in the order of Fe > Zn > Cu > Co > Cr > Mn > Ni > Pb > Cd. The copepods in the nearshore locations had higher concentrations of heavy metals than those offshore. Compared to earlier data on heavy metals, particularly those that are physiologically non-essential and toxic, the current study demonstrates higher amounts of these metals in copepods in the inshore BoB [Ni (avg. 58.7 ± 5.5 µg/g), Pb (avg. 25.6 ± 4.7 µg/g), and Cd (avg. 16.4 ± 0.9 µg/g)]. Considering the strong East India Coastal Currents in the western BoB, trace metal-concentrated copepods could be transported too far along the Indian coastline from the current study area., (© 2023. Purpose: Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) describes an entity characterized by ultrastructural muscle damage. Hesperidin methyl chalcone (HMC) is a synthetic flavonoid presenting analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. We evaluated the effects of HMC upon DOMS., Method: In a preventive paradigm, 31 sedentary young men were submitted to a randomized, double-blinded parallel trial and received HMC 500 mg or one placebo capsule × 3 days before an intense dynamic exercise protocol (concentric/eccentric actions) applied for lower limbs for inducing muscle damage. Assessments were conducted at baseline, and 24 and 48 h after, comprising physical performance, and post-muscle soreness and damage, inflammation, recovery of muscle strength, and postural balance associated with DOMS. HMC safety was also evaluated. Thirty participants completed the study., Results: HMC improved the performance of participants during exercise (40.3 vs 51.3 repetitions to failure, p = 0.0187) and inhibited CPK levels (90.5 vs 57.9 U/L, p = 0.0391) and muscle soreness during passive quadriceps palpation (2.6 vs 1.4 VAS cm, p = 0.0439), but not during active actions, nor did it inhibit IL-1β or IL-10 levels. HMC improved muscle strength recovery, and satisfactorily refined postural balance, without inducing injury to kidneys or liver., Conclusions: Preemptive HMC supplementation may be beneficial for boosting physical performance and for the amelioration of clinical parameters related to DOMS, including pain on muscle palpation, increased blood CPK levels, and muscle strength and proprioceptive deficits, without causing adverse effects. These data advance the understanding of the benefits provided by HMC for DOMS treatment, which supports its usefulness for such purpose., (© 2023. Mid-day napping has been recommended as a countermeasure against sleep debt and an effective method for recovery, regardless of nocturnal sleep duration. Herein, we summarize the available evidence regarding the influence of napping on exercise and cognitive performance as well as the effects of napping on athletes' perceptual responses prior to or during exercise. The existing studies investigating the influence of napping on athletic performance have revealed equivocal results. Prevailing findings indicate that following a normal sleep night or after a night of sleep loss, a mid-day nap may enhance or restore several exercise and cognitive performance aspects, while concomitantly provide benefits on athletes' perceptual responses. Most, but not all, findings suggest that compared to short-term naps (20-30 min), long-term ones (>35-90 min) appear to provide superior benefits to the athletes. The underlying mechanisms behind athletic performance enhancement following a night of normal sleep or the restoration after a night of sleep loss are not clear yet. However, the absence of benefits or even the deterioration of performance following napping in some studies is likely the result of sleep inertia. The present review sheds light on the predisposing factors that influence the post-nap outcome, such as nocturnal sleep time, mid-day nap duration and the time elapsed between the end of napping and the subsequent testing, discusses practical solutions and stimulates further research on this area., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Abstract: Kusumoto, H, Ta, C, Brown, SM, and Mulcahey, MK. Factors contributing to diurnal variation in athletic performance and methods to reduce within-day performance variation: A systematic review. J Strength Cond Res 35(12S): S119-S135, 2021-For many individuals, athletic performance (e.g., cycle ergometer output) differs based on the time of day (TOD). This study identified factors contributing to diurnal variation in athletic performance and methods to reduce TOD performance variation. Comprehensive searches of PubMed, Ovid, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Libraries were conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Peer-reviewed publications reporting quantitative, significant diurnal variation (p ≤ 0.05) of athletic performance with explanations for the differences were included. Studies providing effective methods to reduce diurnal variation were also included. Literature reviews, studies involving nonhuman or nonadult subjects, studies that intentionally manipulated sleep duration or quality, and studies deemed to be of poor methodological quality using NIH Quality Assessment Tools were excluded. Forty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Body temperature differences (n = 13), electromyographic parameters (n = 10), serum biomarker fluctuations (n = 5), athlete chronotypes (n = 4), and differential oxygen kinetics (n = 3) were investigated as significant determinants of diurnal variation in sports performance. Successful techniques for reducing diurnal athletic performance variability included active or passive warm-up (n = 9), caffeine ingestion (n = 2), and training-testing TOD synchrony (n = 3). Body temperature was the most important contributor to diurnal variation in athletic performance. In addition, extended morning warm-up was the most effective way to reduce performance variation. Recognizing contributors to diurnal variation in athletic performance may facilitate the development of more effective training regimens that allow athletes to achieve consistent performances regardless of TOD., (Copyright © 2020 National Strength and Conditioning Association.)

Three dimensional (3D) printing has recently expanded in popularity and has become an effective approach for tissue engineering. Advances in tissue engineering have increased the effectiveness of cell-based therapies. Indeed, the ultimate goal of such treatment is the development of conditions similar to fetal wound regeneration. In this context, technology of 3D printing also allows researchers to more effectively compose multi-material and cell-laden scaffolds with less effort. In this study, we explored a synthetic gel scaffold derived from 3D bioprinter with or without stem cells to accelerate wound healing and skin defects. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) were isolated and seeded into 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold. Morphological and cell adherence properties of 3D scaffold were assessed by hemotoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining and scanning electron microscopy and cell viability was determined by methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay. In vivo assessment of the scaffold was done using H&E staining in the full-thickness burn rat model. The experimental groups included; (a) untreated (control), (b) 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold (Trial 1), and (c) 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold loaded with ADSC (Trial 2). Our results represented 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold with or without ADSCs accelerated wound contraction and healing compared to control groups. Epithelization was completed until 21 days after operation in scaffold alone. In scaffold with ADSCs group, epithelization was faster and formed a multi-layered epidermis with the onset of cornification. In conclusion, 3D bioprinter derived-gel scaffold with or without ADSCs has the potential to be used as a wound graft material in skin regenerative medicine., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Abstract: Costa, BDV, Ferreira, MEC, Gantois, P, Kassiano, W, Paes, ST, de Lima-Júnior, D, Cyrino, ES, and Fortes, LS. Acute effect of drop-set, traditional, and pyramidal systems in resistance training on neuromuscular performance in trained adults. J Strength Cond Res 35(4): 991-996, 2021-The aim of this study was to analyze the acute effects of resistance training (RT) systems on lower- and upper-limb performance in trained adults. Eighteen male young adults with experience in RT aged from 18 to 26 years underwent the 3 experimental conditions (drop-set [DS], decrescent pyramid [DP], and traditional [TR]). The subjects performed 2 exercises (bench press and leg press 45°). In the DS condition, they underwent 2 sets of 10 repetitions at 12RM, followed by 5 additional repetitions with an intensity of 15RM with 6-minute interval rest between sets. In the DP, it was performed 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 10RM, 12RM, and 15RM, respectively, and the rest interval was 3 minutes between sets. In the TR, the subjects performed 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 12RM with 3 minutes of rest between sets. Countermovement jump, peak power (Wpeak), and force (Fpeak) in the bench press were evaluated in the baseline, before, and 30 minutes after the experimental sessions. Countermovement jump performance decreased significantly only after the DS and DP conditions (-6.7 and -1.9%, respectively). The groups were significantly different in the post-intervention; the DS condition presented lower values when compared with the DP (p = 0.01) and TR (p = 0.001). According to Fpeak and Wpeak, only DS condition significantly decreased the performance (-3.8 and -4.1%, respectively). The results indicate the DS and DP conditions impair the neuromuscular performance of the lower limbs, whereas for upper limbs, only DS condition negatively affect upper-limb performance., (Copyright © 2019 National Strength and Conditioning Association.)

Background: Optimal prescription of resistance exercise load (kg) is essential for the development of maximal strength. Two methods are commonly used in practice with no clear consensus on the most effective approach for the improvement of maximal strength., Objective: The primary aim of this review was to compare the effectiveness of percentage 1RM (% 1RM) and repetition maximum targets (RM) as load prescription methods for the development of maximal strength., Methods: Electronic database searches of MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and CINAHL Complete were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Studies were eligible for inclusion if a direct measure of maximal strength was used, a non-training control group was a comparator, the training intervention was > 4 weeks in duration and was replicable, and participants were defined as healthy and between the ages of 18-40. Methodological quality of the studies was evaluated using a modified Downs and Black checklist. Percentage change (%) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for all strength-based training groups were calculated. Statistical significance (p < 0.05) was reported from each study., Results: Twenty-two studies comprising a total of 761 participants (585 males and 176 females) were found to meet the inclusion criteria. 12 studies were returned for % 1RM, with 10 for RM. All studies showed statistically significant improvements in maximal strength in the training groups (31.3 ± 21.9%; 95% CI 33.1-29.5%). The mean quality rating for all studies was 17.7 ± 2.3. Four studies achieved a good methodological rating, with the remainder classified as moderate., Conclusions: Both % 1RM and RM are effective tools for improving maximal strength. % 1RM appears to be a better prescriptive method than RM potentially due to a more sophisticated management of residual fatigue. However, large heterogeneity was present within this data. Lower body and multi-joint exercises appear to be more appropriate for developing maximal strength. Greater consensus is required in defining optimal training prescriptions, physiological adaptations, and training status.

From April 2003 to December 2006, 195 patients with de novo symptomatic myeloma and younger than 60 years of age were randomly assigned to receive either tandem transplantation up front (arm A, n = 97) or one autologous stem-cell transplantation followed by a maintenance therapy with thalidomide (day + 90, 100 mg per day during 6 months) (arm B, n = 98). Patients included in arm B received a second transplant at disease progression. In both arms, autologous stem-cell transplantation was preceded by first-line therapy with thalidomide-dexamethasone and subsequent collection of peripheral blood stem cells with high-dose cyclophosphamide (4 g/m(2)) and granulocyte colony stimulating factor. Data were analyzed on an intent-to-treat basis. With a median follow-up of 33 months (range, 6-46 months), the 3-year overall survival was 65% in arm A and 85% in arm B (P = .04). The 3-year progression-free survival was 57% in arm A and 85% in arm B (P = .02). Up-front single autologous transplantation followed by 6 months of maintenance therapy with thalidomide (with second transplant in reserve for relapse or progression) is an effective therapeutic strategy to treat multiple myeloma patients and appears superior to tandem transplant in this setting. The herbaceous perennial Lepidium draba L. is an invasive weed of rangelands and riparian areas in North America and Australia. As of 2002, it had infested 40,500 ha of rangeland in Oregon and large areas in Wyoming and Utah. Little is known of plant pathogens occurring on L. draba, especially in the United States, that could be useful for biological control of the weed. Leaf spots were first noted on a stand of L. draba near Shepherd, MT in 1997. The spots were mostly circular but sometimes irregularly shaped and whitish to pale yellow. The pathogen was erroneously assumed to be Cercospora beticola since its morphological traits closely resembled that species and the area had large fields of sugar beet with heavy Cercospora leaf spot incidence. Diseased leaves of L. draba were collected in 1997 and 2007. Conidia, borne singly on dark gray, unbranched conidiophores produced on dark stromata late in the season, were elongate, hyaline, multiseptate, 38 to 120 × 2 to 6 μm (mostly 38 to 50 × 2 to 5 μm) and had bluntly rounded tips and wider, truncate bases. These characteristics were consistent with the description of C. bizzozeriana Saccardo & Berlese (2). To isolate the fungus, spores were picked from fascicles of conidiophores with a fine-tipped glass rod, suspended in sterile water, and spread on plates of water agar. Germinated spores were transferred to potato dextrose agar (PDA). The ITS1, 5.8S, and ITS2 sequences of this fungus (GenBank Accession No. EU887131) were identical to sequences of an isolate of C. bizzozeriana from Tunisia (GenBank Accession No. DQ370428). However, these sequences were also identical to those of a number of Cercospora spp. in GenBank, including C. beticola. We also compared the actin gene sequences of the Montana isolate of C. bizzozeriana (GenBank Accession No. FJ205397) and an isolate of C. beticola from Montana (GenBank Accession No. AF443281); the sequences were 94.6% similar, an appreciable difference. For pathogenicity tests, cultures were grown on carrot leaf decoction agar. Aqueous suspensions of 10 4 spores per ml from cultures were sprayed on 6-week-old L. draba plants. Plants were covered with plastic bags and placed on the greenhouse bench at 20 to 25°C for 96 h. Koch's postulates were completed by reisolating the fungus from the circular leaf spots that appeared within 10 days, usually on lower leaves. Spores of C. bizzozeriana were also sprayed on seedlings of sugar beet, collard, mustard, radish, cabbage, and kale under conditions identical to those above. No symptoms occurred. After the discovery of the disease in 1997, plants of L. draba in eastern Montana, Wyoming, and Utah were surveyed from 1998 to 2003 for similar symptoms and signs, but none were found. This, to our knowledge, is the first report of C. bizzozeriana in the United States. The initial report of the fungus in North America was from Manitoba in 1938 (1). It has recently been reported as occurring on L. draba in Tunisia (4) and Russia (3) and is reported as common in Europe (2). Hoary cress (Lepidium draba (L.) subsp. draba (synonym = Cardaria draba (L.) Desv.) (1), family Brassicaceae, is a common weed in Russia but it is an aggressive invasive weed in the northwestern United States. In the summer of 2006, dying hoary cress plants were found near Kugoyeyskoye in the Krylovskoy area of the Krasnodar Region of Russia. Plants had grayish white leaf spots on most of the leaves. In some cases, the diseased leaf spots dropped out of the leaves producing shot-holes. In most cases, the leaf spots coalesced and the leaves wilted and died. Diseased leaves were collected, air dried, and sent to the quarantine facility of the Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research Unit (FDWSRU), USDA/ARS, Fort Detrick, MD. The air-dried leaves were observed microscopically, and numerous conidiophores and conidia were observed on both sides of leaves within and around the lesions. The fungus isolated (DB06-018) conformed to the description of Cercospora bizzozeriana Saccardo & Berlese (2). Conidiophores were 1 to 5 geniculate, unbranched, pale olive-brown, and uniform in color and width (4 μm). Conidia were multiseptate, hyaline, cylindric, straight to slightly curved, and measured 57 to 171 μm (average 103) long × 3.8 to 6.7 μm (average 4.6) wide. Leaves of rosettes (10 to 15 cm in diameter) of four hoary cress plants were spray inoculated with an aqueous suspension of conidia (1 × 10 5 /ml) and mycelia harvested from 6- to 8-day-old cultures grown on V8 medium. Inoculated plants and two noninoculated plants were placed in a dew chamber at 20°C in darkness and continuous dew. After 96 h, plants were moved from the dew chamber to a greenhouse bench. All plants were watered twice daily. After 12 days, symptoms were observed on all inoculated plants. Symptoms were identical to those observed in the field in Russia. No symptoms were observed on noninoculated plants. C. bizzozeriana was reisolated from the leaves of all symptomatic plants. Nucleotide sequences were obtained for the internal transcribed spacer regions ITS1 and ITS2 and the 5.8S ribosomal RNA gene (GenBank Accession No. EU031780) and aligned with the same sequences obtained from another C. bizzozeriana isolate (GenBank Accession No. DQ370428) collected in Tunisia. There was 100% alignment of the two sequences with no gaps. Both isolates of C. bizzozeriana are destructive pathogens on hoary cress and locally severe epidemics have been observed in both Russia and Tunisia (4). This fungus has also been reported in North America (3) and has the potential as a biological control agent where the weed is a problem. To our knowledge, this is the first report of C. bizzozeriana on L. draba subsp. draba in Russia. A voucher specimen has been deposited with the U.S. National Fungus Collections (BPI 878175).
