Thermochromic phase change materials (TPCMs) are gaining increasing interest among scientists. These multifunctional materials can store thermal energy but also, at the same time, during the phase transition, they can change colour. Thermal conductivity is also extremely important for this type of material, which is why various additives are used for this purpose. This work aimed to study the properties of thermochromic phase change materials with an inorganic modifier. Stearic acid, behenyl alcohol, and bromocresol purple were used as thermochromic system components, while boron nitride particles were used as an additive. The key tests for such systems are thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which allow determining the thermal stability of the materials (at around 170 °C) and phase transition parameters (thermal energy storage of 300 J/g in the range of 40-75 °C). The thermochromic properties were tested, and satisfactory results were obtained. In the end, laser flash analysis (LFA) tests indicated that boron nitride improves the thermal conductivity of the organic thermochromic phase change material by almost 30%. The results showed that the tested materials have great potential as thermochromic phase change materials for thermal energy storage.

Wood characterized by desired mechanical properties and wood joining material is essential for creating wooden structures. The polymer adhesives are suitable for such applications due to the possibility of energy dissipation from stresses generated by wooden structures and the elimination of thermal bridging, which are common problems in metal joining materials. This research focuses on the thermophysical properties of the laboratory-prepared flexible and rigid polyurethanes to select an appropriate polymer adhesive. Our results showed that the highest thermal stability was in the case of the new PSTF-S adhesive, which reached 230 °C, but the lowest mass loss in the air environment was around 54% for the PS material. The mean thermal expansion coefficient for F&R PU adhesives was 124-164∙10 -6 K -1 . The thermal diffusivity of examined adhesives varied between 0.100 and 0.180 mm 2 s -1 . The thermal conductivity, depending on the type of polyurethane, was in the 0.13-0.29 W∙m -1 ∙K -1 range. The relative decrease in thermal diffusivity after heating the adhesives to 150 °C was from 2% for materials with the lowest diffusivity to 23% for the PU with the highest value of heat transfer. Vibrational spectroscopy is the most effective, efficient and informative method of structural analysis of amorphous materials with silica matrix and, therefore, an indispensable tool for examining silicon oxycarbide-based amorphous materials (SiOC). The subject of this work is a description of the modification process of SiOC glasses with phosphate ions based on the structural examination including mainly Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy. They were obtained as polymer-derived ceramics based on ladder-like silsesquioxanes synthesised via the sol-gel method. With the high phosphate's volatility, it was decided to introduce the co-doping ions to create [AlPO 4 ] and [BPO 4 ] stable structural units. As a result, several samples from the SiPOC, SiPAlOC and SiPBOC systems were obtained with various quantities of the modifiers. All samples underwent a detailed structural evaluation of both polymer precursors and ceramics after high-temperature treatment with Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR). Obtained results proved the efficient preparation of desired materials that exhibit structural parameters similar to the unmodified one. They were X-ray-amorphous with no phase separation and crystallisation. Spectroscopic measurements confirmed the presence of the crucial Si-C bond and how modifying ions are incorporated into the SiOC network. It was also possible to characterise the turbostratic free carbon phase. The structure and properties of the glass can be modified by introducing appropriate additives. Dolomite is one of the primary raw materials modifying the properties of glass, in which the essential component is calcium-magnesium double carbonate CaCO 3 ∙MgCO 3 . The paper presents the research results on glasses obtained by smelting pure amphibolite and amphibolite modified with 10 and 20% dolomite additives. The raw material used was mined in the Poland region of Lower Silesia. The glass melting process was carried out in an electric furnace at 1450 °C for 2 h. The structure and properties of the glasses and crystallization products were determined by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Viscosity and Vickers microhardness were also measured. It was found that the modification of amphibolite glass by adding dolomite affects the glasses' properties and structure. The research results determined the effect of dolomite addition on the properties of alumino-silicate glasses in terms of the mineral fibre products used in the construction industry.

Up-conversion nanoparticles have garnered lots of attention due to their ability to transform low energy light (near-infrared) into high-energy (visible) light, enabling their potential use as remote visible light nano-transducers. However, their low efficiency restricts their full potential. To overcome this disadvantage, fluoroindate glasses (InF 3 ) doped at different molar concentrations of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ were obtained using the melting-quenching technique, reaching the highest green emission at 1.4Yb and 1.75Er (mol%), which corresponds to the 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 (540-552 nm) transition. The particles possess the amorphous nature of the glass and have a high thermostability, as corroborated by thermogravimetric assay. Furthermore, the spectral decay curve analysis showed efficient energy transfer as the rare-earth ions varied. This was corroborated with the absolute quantum yield (QY) obtained (85%) upon excitation at 385 nm with QYEr = 17% and QYYb = 68%. Additionally, InF 3 -1.4Yb-1.75Er was milled and functionalized using poly(ethylene glycol) to impart biocompatibility, which is essential for biomedical applications. Glasses and devitrificates from the SiO 2 -B 2 O 3 -P 2 O 5 -K 2 O-CaO-MgO system with constant contents of SiO 2 and P 2 O 5 network formers, modified by the addition of B 2 O 3 , were analyzed. All materials were synthesized by the traditional melt-quenching technique. The glass stability (GS) parameters (K rg , ∆T, K W , K H ) were determined. The effect of the addition of B 2 O 3 on the GS, liquation phenomenon, crystallization process, and the type of crystallizing phases were examined using SEM-EDS, DSC, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy imaging methods. It was observed that the addition of B 2 O 3 increased the tendency of the glass to crystallize. Both phosphates (e.g., Ca 9 MgK(PO 4 ) 7 , Mg 3 Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 4 ), and silicates (e.g., K 2 Mg 5 (Si 12 O 30 ), CaMg(Si 2 O 6 ), MgSiO 3 ) crystallized in the studied system. The Raman spectrum for the orthophosphate Mg 3 Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 4 stanfieldite type was obtained. Boron ions were introduced into the structures of crystalline compounds at high crystallization temperatures. The type of crystallizing phases was found to be related to the phenomenon of liquation, and the order of their occurrence was dependent on the Gibbs free enthalpy.

The removal of uremic toxins from patients with acute kidney injury is a key issue in improving the quality of life for people requiring peritoneal dialysis. The currently utilized method for the removal of uremic toxins from the human organism is hemodialysis, performed on semipermeable membranes where the uremic toxins, along with small molecules, are separated from proteins and blood cells. In this study, we describe a mixed-linker modulated synthesis of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks for efficient removal of uremic toxins. We determined that the efficient adsorption of uremic toxins is achieved by optimizing the ratio between -amino functionalization of the UiO-66 structure with 75% of -NH 2 groups within organic linker structure. The maximum adsorption of hippuric acid and 3-indoloacetic acid was achieved by UiO-66-NH 2 (75%) and by UiO-66-NH 2 (75%) 12.5% HCl prepared by modulated synthesis. Furthermore, UiO-66-NH 2 (75%) almost completely adsorbs 3-indoloacetic acid bound to bovine serum albumin, which was used as a model protein to which uremic toxins bind in the human body. The high adsorption capacity was confirmed in recyclability test, which showed almost 80% removal of 3-indoloacetic acid after the third adsorption cycle. Furthermore, in vitro cytotoxicity tests as well as hemolytic activity assay have proven that the UiO-66-based materials can be considered as potentially safe for hemodialytic purposes in living organisms.

A series of silicate-phosphate glass materials from the SiO 2 -P 2 O 5 -K 2 O-MgO system (pure and doped with sulfur ions) were synthesized by melting raw material mixtures that contained activated carbon as a reducer. The bulk composition of glass was confirmed with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. The homogeneity of the glass was confirmed through elemental mapping at the microstructural level with scanning electron microscopy combined with an analysis of the microregions with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The structural and optical properties of the glass were studied by using spectroscopic techniques. The infrared spectroscopy studies that were conducted showed that the addition of sulfur caused changes in the silicate-phosphate networks, as they became more polymerized, which was likely related to the accumulation of potassium near the sulfur ions. By using irradiation with an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) nanosecond laser system operating at the second harmonic wavelength, the glass samples emitted a wide spectrum of luminescence, peaking at about 700 nm when excited by UV light (210-280 nm). The influence of the glass composition and the laser-processing parameters on the emission characteristics is presented and discussed. This work also referred to the density, molar volume, and theoretical optical basicity of pure and sulfur-doped glass.

Polyurethane flexible joints (PUFJ) and fiber reinforced polyurethanes (FRPU) have shown great potential in the repair and protection of masonry and concrete structures. However, some questions have been raised about the durability of such solutions. The accelerated weathering and thermal stability tests carried out so far have shown the mechanical stability of PS-polyurethane in temperatures up to 100 °C and some UV-induced surface degradation. The paper reports the results from tensile tests of PS-polyurethane, used in the technologies mentioned above after being subjected to aging in different corrosive factors, a thermal analysis of unaged polymer which consists of DSC-TGA and dilatometry studies, and SEM-microscopy observation of the specimens with the indication of the elemental composition (EDS). PS-polyurethane showed low sensitivity to weathering with exposition to UV-radiation, some reactiveness to aqueous environments of a different chemical nature, and resistivity to soil and freezing in both air and water. SEM observations indicated changes in the composition of mineral fillers as the main effect of immersion in different water solutions. DSC-TGA studies showed the thermal stability of PS-polyurethane up to 200 °C and degradation proceeding in five stages. Dilatometry studies revealed that the first-degree thermal degradation over 200 °C causes a serious loss of mechanical properties.

Currently, there is a growing interest in the development of multi-colored materials based on the combination of two or more systems (organic or inorganic) as a strategy to take advantage of their combined physical or chemical properties. These multi-colored materials have found potential applications as sensors, amplifiers, and optical fibers. In this work, the physical characteristics of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) doped with Terbium(III)-tris-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) (Tb(tmhd) 3 ) at 1.57-1.58 mmol and Rhodamine B (RhB) at different concentrations were analyzed. The emission obtained from these samples (multichromophoric samples) varied as function of RhB concentration due to an efficient energy transfer process (33-65%). The role of PMMA as inert matrix that assists in the recombination process was confirmed by FTIR and Raman spectra analysis. Glasses have been synthesized in the system P2O5-SiO2-K2O-MgO-CaO modified by addition of MoO3. Glasses were prepared by conventional fusion method from 40 g batches. The influence of Mo-cations on the analysed glass structure was investigated by means of Raman and (31)P MAS-NMR techniques. It has been found that molybdate units can form Mo[MoO4/MoO6]-O-P and/or Mo[MoO4/MoO6]-O-Si bonds with non-bridging oxygens atoms of Q2 methaphosphate units, resulting in the transformation of chain methaphosphate structure into pyrophosphate and finally into orthophosphate structure. It has been also found that increasing amount of MoO3 in the structure of investigated glasses causes their gradual depolymerization and molybdenum ions in the analysed glass matrix act as modifying cations., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Silicate-phosphate glasses of SiO2P2O5K2OMgOCaO system containing manganese ions were synthesized by the melt-quenching technique and were investigated to obtain information about the influence of Mn-cations on the glass structure and their chemical activity. Structural properties were studied using X-ray method, FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. The chemical activity of analyzed glasses in the 2 wt.% citric acid solution was measured by chemical analysis (ICP-AES, EDS) and SEM observations. It has been found that increasing amount of MnO2 in the structure of investigated glasses causes their gradual depolymerization. This process is more apparent in the case of the silico-oxygen subnetwork than phospho-oxygen one. This is related to increasing amounts of SiO4 tetrahedra containing two nonbridging oxygen atoms in silico-oxygen subnetwork. It has been also found that the presence of "weaker" chemical bonds of SiOMn type in comparison to SiOCa and SiOMg bonds is responsible for the increase in solubility of the analyzed silicate-phosphate glasses in conditions simulating natural soil environment., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
