This study introduces the development of a photothermal-based microfluidic paper analytical device (PT-µPAD) integrated with near-field communication (NFC) technology and smartphone readout for enzyme-free glucose quantification in human samples. With the properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) both as a nanozyme and as a photothermal substrate, there is no need for costly reagents like enzymes or a readout instrumentation for the selective and sensitive detection of glucose. In PT-µPADs, AuNPs are etched by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) generated from glucose catalysis. Photothermal detection from the plasmonic heating of these AuNPs when illuminated by a 533nm LED light source is achieved by inserting the PT-µPAD sensor into a portable NFC platform suitable for smartphone readout. Temperature variation is directly proportional to the glucose concentration. After optimization, we acquired a linear range between 5.0 and 20.0 µmol L -1 ( R 2 = 0.9967) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 25.0 nmol L -1 for glucose. Additionally, while our sensor does not utilize any enzyme, it is remarkably selective to glucose with no effects from interferences. Recovery studies in various human control samples indicated a range of 99.73-102.66% with the highest RSD of 3.53%, making it highly accurate and precise. Moreover, our method is more sensitive than other methods relying on conventional µPADs for glucose sensing. By integrating the potential benefits of microfluidics, nanomaterials as nanozymes, and NFC technology for wireless readout, our sensor demonstrates great promise as an accessible, affordable, and shelf-stable device for glucose quantification. Moreover, this concept can be extended to detect other molecules of interest as a point-of-care (POC) diagnostics device.

This article presents the development of a distance-based thread analytical device (dTAD) integrated with an ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) for quantitative monitoring of zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) in human urine samples. The IIP was easily chemically modified onto the thread channel using dithizone (DTZ) as a ligand to bind to Zn 2+ with methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as well as 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as cross-linking agents to enhance the selectivity for Zn 2+ detection. The imprinted polymer was characterized using Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Under optimization, the linear detection range was from 1.0 to 20.0 mg L -1 ( R 2 = 0.9992) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.0 mg L -1 . Other potentially interfering metal ions and molecules did not interfere with this approach, leading to high selectivity. Furthermore, our technique exhibits a remarkable recovery ranging from 100.48% to 103.16%, with the highest relative standard deviation (% RSD) of 5.44% for monitoring Zn 2+ in human control urine samples, indicating high accuracy and precision. Similarly, there is no significant statistical difference between the results obtained using our method and standards on zinc supplement sample labels. The proposed method offers several advantages in detecting trace Zn 2+ for point-of-care (POC) medical diagnostics and environmental sample analysis, such as ease of use, instrument-free readout, and cost efficiency. Overall, our developed dTAD-based IIP method holds potential for simple, affordable, and rapid detection of Zn 2+ levels and can be applied to other metal ions' analysis.

This article introduces distance-based paper analytical devices (dPADs) integrated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and carbon dots (CDs) for simultaneous quantification of cytokine biomarkers, namely C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in human biological samples for diagnosis of cytokine syndrome. Using fluorescent CDs and MIP technology, the dPAD exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity. Detection is based on fluorescence quenching of CDs achieved through the interaction of the target analytes with the MIP layer on the paper substrate. Quantitative analysis is easily accomplished by measuring the distance length of quenched fluorescence with a traditional ruler and naked eye readout enabling rapid diagnosis of cytokine syndrome and the underlying infection. Our sensor demonstrated linear ranges of 2.50-24.0 pg mL -1 ( R 2 = 0.9974), 0.25-3.20 pg mL -1 ( R 2 = 0.9985), and 1.50-16.0 pg mL -1 ( R 2 = 0.9966) with detection limits (LODs) of 2.50, 0.25, and 1.50 pg mL -1 for CRP, TNF-α, and IL-6, respectively. This sensor also demonstrated remarkable selectivity compared to a sensor employing a non-imprinted polymer (NIP), and precision with the highest relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5.14%. The sensor is more accessible compared to prior methods relying on expensive reagents and instruments and complex fabrication methods. Furthermore, the assay provided notable accuracy for monitoring these biomarkers in various human samples with recovery percentages ranging between 99.22% and 103.58%. By integrating microfluidic systems, nanosensing, and MIPs technology, our developed dPADs hold significant potential as a cost-effective and user-friendly analytical method for point-of-care diagnostics (POC) of cytokine-related disorders. This concept can be further extended to developing diagnostic devices for other biomarkers.

The development of distance-based paper analytical devices (dPADs) integrated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to monitor Escherichia coli (E. coli) levels in food samples is presented. The fluidic workflow on the device is controlled using a designed hydrophilic bridge valve. Dopamine serves as a monomer for the formation of the E. coli-selective MIP layer on the dPADs. The detection principle relies on the inhibition of the E. coli toward copper (II) (Cu 2+ )-triggered oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) on the paper substrate. Quantitative detection is simply determined through visual observation of the residual yellow color of the OPD in the detection zone, which is proportional to E. coli concentration. The sensing exhibits a linear range from 25.0 to 1200.0 CFU mL -1 (R 2  = 0.9992) and a detection limit (LOD) of 25.0 CFU mL -1 for E. coli detection. Additionally, the technique is highly selective with no interference even from the molecules that have shown to react with OPD to form oxidized OPD. The developed device demonstrates accuracy and precision for E. coli quantification in food samples with recovery percentages between 98.3 and 104.7% and the highest relative standard deviation (RSD) of 4.55%. T-test validation shows no significant difference in E. coli concentration measured between our method and a commercial assay. The proposed dPAD sensor has the potential for selective and affordable E. coli determination  in food samples without requiring sample preparation. Furthermore, this strategy can be extended to monitor other molecules for which MIP can be developed and integrated into paper-microfluidic platform., (© 2024. Transdermal drug delivery offers a promising alternative to traditional methods such as oral ingestion and hypodermic injection. Hypodermic injections are painful, while oral ingestion requires higher doses due to enzymatic degradation and poor absorption. While microneedles address the pain issue, they are limited to delivering small amounts of drugs and can be impractical due to peeling off with motion and sweat. Herein, this work proposes soft injectables using drug-carrying sutures for painless and localized sustained delivery in the dermis. These sutures can remain in place during delivery and are suitable for all skin types. Surgical sutures can also serve as open capillary microfluidic channels carrying drug from a wearable drug reservoir to enable long-term (weeks to months) transdermal drug delivery. The experiments focus on delivering 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), a cancer drug, and rhodamine B, a drug model. A fixed-length suture of 60 cm delivers 0.43 mg of 5-flurouracil in 15 min. The experiments also demonstrate a continuous drug delivery of rhodamine B for over 8 weeks at a rate of 0.0195 mL h -1 . A natural stress response induces elevated cortisol levels in biological fluids, such as saliva. While current sensor technologies can detect cortisol in real time, their sensitivity and reliability for human subjects have not been assured. This is due to relatively low concentrations of salivary cortisol, which fluctuate throughout the day and vary significantly between individuals. To address these challenges, we present an improved electrochemical biosensor leveraging graphene's exceptional conductivity and physicochemical properties. A 1-pyrenebutyric acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (PBASE-NHS)-modified commercial graphene foam (GF) electrode is presented to realize an ultra-sensitive biosensor for cortisol detection directly in human saliva. The biosensor fabrication process entails the attachment of anti-cortisol monoclonal antibodies (mAb-cort) onto a PBASE-NHS/GF electrode through noncovalent immobilization on the vertically stratified graphene foam electrode surface. This unique immobilization strategy preserves graphene's structural integrity and electrical conductivity while facilitating antibody immobilization. The binding of cortisol to immobilized mAb-cort is read out via differential pulse voltammetry using ferri/ferro redox reactions. The immunosensor demonstrates an exceptional dynamic range of 1.0 fg mL -1 to 10,000 pg mL -1 (R 2  = 0.9914) with a detection limit of 0.24 fg mL -1 (n = 3) for cortisol. Furthermore, we have established the reliability of cortisol sensors in monitoring human saliva. We have also performed multiple modes of validation, one against the established enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a second by a third-party service Salimetric on 16 student volunteers exposed to different stress levels, showing excellent correlation (r = 0.9961). This study presents a rapid microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) capable of simultaneously monitoring Gram-negative bacteria and nitrite ions (NO 2 - ) for water quality monitoring. We utilize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalized with polymyxin molecules (AuNPs@polymyxin) to cause color change due to aggregation for the detection of Gram-negative bacteria, and antiaggregation in the presence of o -phenylenediamine (OPD) for NO 2 - detection. In this study, Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) serves as the model of a Gram-negative bacterium. Using the developed μPADs, the color changes resulting from aggregation and antiaggregation reactions are measured using a smartphone application. The linear detection ranges from 5.0 × 10 2 to 5.0 × 10 5 CFU/mL ( R 2 = 0.9961) for E. coli and 0.20 to 2.0 μmol/L ( R 2 = 0.995) for NO 2 - . The detection limits were determined as 2.0 × 10 2 CFU/mL for E. coli and 0.18 μmol/L for NO 2 - . Notably, the newly developed assay exhibited high selectivity with no interference from Gram-positive bacteria. Additionally, we obtained acceptable recovery for monitoring E. coli and NO 2 - in drinking water samples with no significant difference between our method and a commercial assay by t test validation. The sensor was also employed for assessing the quality of the pond and environmental water source. Notably, this approach can also be applied to human urine samples with satisfactory accuracy. Furthermore, the assay's stability is extended due to its reliance on AuNPs rather than reagents like antibodies and enzymes, reducing costs and ensuring long-term viability. Our cost-effective μPADs therefore provide a real-time analysis of both contaminants, making them suitable for assessing water quality in resource-limited settings.

There is a need for flexible chemical sensors for the ecological and physiological research of avian species such as house sparrows ( Passer domesticus ). Current methods in this field are invasive and require multiple physical interactions with the birds. Emerging research in flexible bioelectronics can enable realization of implantable devices that are mechanically compliant with the underlying tissues for continuous real-time sensing in situ . However, challenges still remain in forming an intimate flexible interface. One of the promising flexible bioelectronic platforms for tissue-embedded sensing is based on functionalizing surgical sutures or threads. Threads have three-dimensional flexibility, high surface-area-to-volume ratio, inherent wicking properties, and are easily functionalizable using reel-to-reel dip coating. Threads are ideal as they are lightweight, therefore, would not interfere with flight motion and would only require minimal interaction with the bird. However, the challenge remains in achieving a highly conductive yet flexible electrode for electrochemical sensing using materials such as gold. In this study, we address this issue through novel gold deposition directly on thread substrate followed by enzyme immobilization to realize flexible electrochemical glucose biosensors on medical-grade sutures. These sensors were calibrated and tested in a range that is wide enough to include the expected range of glucose concentration in house sparrows (0-8.55 mM). Glucose monitoring in house sparrows will provide insights into energy metabolism and regulation during stress responses. In addition, the stability, repeatability, and selectivity of the sensor were tested with final validation in a real bird. Our innovative gold-coated, thread-based flexible electrochemical glucose sensor can also be used in other small and large animals. This can also be extended to monitoring other metabolites in future.

There exists a strong correlation between the pH levels of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and GI diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), ulcerative colitis, and pancreatis. Existing methods for diagnosing many GI diseases predominantly rely on invasive, expensive, and time-consuming techniques such as colonoscopy and endoscopy. In this study, an autonomous ingestible smart biosensing system in a pill format with integrated pH sensors is reported. The smart sensing pills will measure the pH profile as they transit through the GI tract. The data is then downloaded from the pills after they are collected from the feces. The sensor is based on electrodeposited PANI on carbon-coated conductive threads providing high pH sensitivity. Engineering innovations allowed integration of thread-based sensors on 3D-printed pill surfaces with front-end readout electronics, memory, and microcontroller assembled on mm-size circular printed circuit boards. The entire smart sensing pill possesses an overall length of 22.1 mm and an outer diameter of 9 mm. The modular biosensing system allows integration of thread-based biosensors to monitor other biomarkers in GI tract that mitigates the complex sensor fabrication process as well as overall pill assembly., (© 2023. Herein, we successfully developed a thread-based analytical device (μTAD) for simultaneous immunosensing of two biomolecules with attomolar sensitivity by using a photothermal effect. A photothermal effect exploits a strong light-to-heat energy conversion of plasmonic metallic nanoparticles at localized surface plasmon resonance. The key innovation is to utilize the cotton thread to realize this sensor and the use of chitosan modification for enhancing the microfluidic properties, for improving the efficiency of photothermal conversion, and for sensor stability. The developed μTAD sensor consists of (i) a sample zone, (ii) a conjugation zone coated with gold nanoparticles bound with an antibody (AuNPs-Ab 2 ), and (iii) a test zone immobilized with a capture antibody (anti-Ab 1 ). The prepared μTAD is assembled in a custom three-dimensional (3D) printed device which holds the laser for illumination and the thermometer for readout. The 3D-printed supportive device enhances signal response by focusing light and localizing the heat generated. For proof of concept, simultaneous sensing of two key stress and inflammation biomarkers, namely, cortisol and interleukin-6 (IL-6), are monitored using this technique. Under optimization, this device exhibited a detection linear range of 2.0-14.0 ag/mL (R 2 = 0.9988) and 30.0-360.0 fg/mL (R 2 = 0.9942) with a detection limit (LOD) of 1.40 ag/mL (∼3.86 amol/L) and 20.0 fg/mL (∼950.0 amol/L) for cortisol and IL-6, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of both biomolecules in human samples indicated recoveries in the range of 98.8%-102.88% with the highest relative standard deviation being 3.49%, offering great accuracy and precision. These results are the highest reported sensitivity for these analytes using an immunoassay method. Our PT-μTAD strategy is therefore a promising approach for detecting biomolecules in resource-limited point-of-care settings.

In this study, nanomaterials capable of enzyme-free glucose quantification and colorimetric readout are integrated into a microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs). Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were utilized as a peroxidase-like nanozyme and a colorimetric probe to achieve glucose monitoring. In this developed device, glucose is oxidized by AuNPs to generate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which flows in the paper microchannels toward detection zones. H 2 O 2 then etches the immobilized AgNPs to induce a color change. The intensity of color change is easily monitored using a smartphone application. Following method optimization, we obtained a linear range from 0.50 to 10.0 mmol L -1  (R 2  = 0.9921) and a detection limit (LOD) of 340.0 μmol L -1 . This falls in the clinically relevant range for glucose monitoring and diabetes diagnosis in humans. In addition, the total analysis time is just 20 min, which is significantly less than the same experiment performed in the solution phase. Also, our method is markedly selective; other substrates do not interfere. The recovery test in human control samples was in the range of 98.47-102.34% and the highest relative standard deviation (RSD) was 3.58%. The enzyme-free approach for glucose sensing is highly desirable for diabetes diagnosis as it replaces the more expensive enzyme with cheaper nanomaterials. In conventional communication systems, dedicated tunable circuit elements are used to realize different functions and achieve performance metrics. For example, tuning the center frequency or the input impedance of an antenna in a radio frequency (RF) system is performed by complex impedance-matching circuits. In this paper, the antenna utilizes the temperature-induced irreversible mechanical deformation of a shape memory alloy (SMA) as a natural way to tune the antenna's shape and configuration, thereby providing inherent tunability without bulky circuit elements. Devices that can morph their functions on demand provide a rich yet unexplored paradigm for the next generation of electronic devices and sensors. For example, an antenna that can morph its shape can be used to adapt communication to different wireless standards or improve wireless signal reception. We utilize temperature-sensitive shape memory alloys (SMA) to realize a shape morphing antenna (ShMoA). In the designed architecture, multiple conjoined shape memory alloy sections form the antenna. The shape morphing of this antenna is achieved through temperature control. Different temperature threshold levels are used for programming the shape. Besides its conventional use for RF applications, ShMoA can serve as a multi-level temperature sensor, analogous to thermoreceptors in an insect antenna. ShMoA essentially combines the function of temperature sensing, embedded computing for detection of threshold crossings, and radio frequency readout, all in the single construct of a shape-morphing antenna (ShMoA) without the need for any battery or peripheral electronics. The ShMoA can be employed as bio-inspired wireless temperature sensing antennae on mobile robotic flies, insects, drones and other robots. Existing techniques for diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders in stomach, small and large intestines, and colon depend on biopsy, endoscopy or colonoscopy methods which are invasive, expensive and time-consuming. In fact, such methods also lack the ability to access large parts of the small intestine. In this article, we demonstrate a smart ingestible biosensing capsule that is capable of monitoring pH activity in small and large intestines. pH is a known biomarker for several gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. Functionalized threads utilized as pH sensing mechanism are integrated with front-end readout electronics and 3D-printed case. This paper demonstrates a modular sensing system design that alleviates the sensor fabrication difficulties as well as the overall assembly of the ingestible capsule.

Wearables have garnered significant attention in recent years not only as consumer electronics for entertainment, communications, and commerce but also for real-time continuous health monitoring. This has been spurred by advances in flexible sensors, transistors, energy storage, and harvesting devices to replace the traditional, bulky, and rigid electronic devices. However, engineering smart wearables that can seamlessly integrate with the human body is a daunting task. Some of the key material attributes that are challenging to meet are skin conformability, breathability, and biocompatibility while providing tunability of its mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties. Electrospinning has emerged as a versatile platform that can potentially address these challenges by fabricating nanofibers with tunable properties from a polymer base. In this article, we review advances in wearable electronic devices and systems that are developed using electrospinning. We cover various applications in multiple fields including healthcare, biomedicine, and energy. We review the ability to tune the electrical, physiochemical, and mechanical properties of the nanofibers underlying these applications and illustrate strategies that enable integration of these nanofibers with human skin., (© 2022 Author(s).)

Microneedles offer a convenient transdermal delivery route with potential for long term sustained release of drugs. However current microneedle technologies may not have the mechanical properties for reliable and stable penetration (e.g. hydrogel microneedles). Moreover, it is also challenging to realize microneedle arrays with large size and high flexibility. There is also an inherent upper limit to the amount and kind of drugs that can be loaded in the microneedles. In this paper, we present a new class of polymeric porous microneedles made from biocompatible and photo-curable resin that address these challenges. The microneedles are unique in their ability to load solid drug formulation in concentrated form. We demonstrate the loading and release of solid formulation of anesthetic and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, namely Lidocaine and Ibuprofen. Paper also demonstrates realization of large area (6 × 20 cm 2 ) flexible and stretchable microneedle patches capable of drug delivery on any body part. Penetration studies were performed in an ex vivo porcine model supplemented through rigorous compression tests to ensure the robustness and rigidity of the microneedles. Detailed release profiles of the microneedle patches were shown in an in vitro skin model. Oxygen plays a key role in human physiology and is abnormally modulated in various disease pathologies making its in situ monitoring quite important. Most oxygen sensors are not able to measure oxygen levels deep inside the tissue or have mismatched electrode-tissue interfaces. In this study we developed a flexible thread-based oxygen sensor that combines the unique advantages of minimal invasiveness and superior flexibility offering the possibility for tissue integration. The sensor is featured by a simple and low-cost fabrication approach which allows for measuring the overall oxygen concentration either over a large surface area or locally at any spot in any three-dimensional environment with high spatial accuracy and high sensitivity. The sensor can sensitively detect dissolved oxygen levels within the physiological range of tissue oxygenation. The sensor's performance is insensitive to pH variation from 5.8 to 8.0. The sensor shows good repeatability and stability over a period of one week in phosphate buffered saline. In addition, the signal variation is less than 10% after hundreds of cycles of physical bending. Using a hydrogel-based tissue model the sensor has been shown to probe dissolved oxygen levels at different spatial locations inside a tissue-like environment.

Human machine interfaces that can track head motion will result in advances in physical rehabilitation, improved augmented reality/virtual reality systems, and aid in the study of human behavior. This paper presents a head position monitoring and classification system using thin flexible strain sensing threads placed on the neck of an individual. A wireless circuit module consisting of impedance readout circuitry and a Bluetooth module records and transmits strain information to a computer. A data processing algorithm for motion recognition provides near real-time quantification of head position. Incoming data is filtered, normalized and divided into data segments. A set of features is extracted from each data segment and employed as input to nine classifiers including Support Vector Machine, Naive Bayes and KNN for position prediction. A testing accuracy of around 92% was achieved for a set of nine head orientations. Results indicate that this human machine interface platform is accurate, flexible, easy to use, and cost effective.

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) gel electrolytes have recently emerged as promising alternatives to ionic liquid- or water-based gels for "ionic skin" sensor applications. Researchers have also been exploring the effects that varying amounts of water may have on the local hydrogen bonding environment within a few model DES systems. In this study, the physical properties and ionic conductivities of biopolymer (gelatin)-supported gels featuring two established DESs and three DES/water mixture formulations are investigated and compared. The DES/water mixtures are formed by combining choline chloride with one of three organic hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), ethylene glycol, glycerol, or 1,2-propanediol, in a 1:2 molar ratio, together with a controlled amount of water, 25 mol % (approximately 5-6 wt % water). For the same fixed gelatin content (20 wt %), DES/water mixture gel Young's modulus values are found to be tunable based on the organic HBD identity, increasing 6-fold from 7 (1,2-propanediol) to 42 (glycerol) kPa. Furthermore, large differences are observed in the resulting gel properties when water has been intentionally added to well-studied DESs. Coformulation with water is found to increase ethylene glycol-based DES gel toughness, measured via tensile testing, from 23 to 68 kJ/m 3 while simultaneously boosting gel room temperature ionic conductivity from 3.3 to 5.2 mS/cm. These results highlight the multiple roles that controlled amounts of water in DES can play within gelatin-supported DES/mixture gel electrolytes, such as influencing gelatin self-assembly and reducing local viscosity to promote facile ion transport.

Transfection is a key function for many single-cell analyses. Reversible electroporation (EP) using high intensity electric fields is a simple means of transfection applicable to most cell types. For reversible EP, precise control over the electric field is critical to regulate the induced pore densities in the membrane and maintain cell viability. Individually accessible microelectrode arrays enabled by semiconductor fabrication methods have emerged as a viable technology for single-cell analyses but do not provide for effective electroporation capabilities due to the planar arrangement of electrodes. Towards the goal of a fully integrated single-cell analysis platform, we utilize a commercial complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process to realize microcavities which allow for single-cell confinement with integrated three-dimensionally aligned electrodes for effective poration. The structure is formed using the inherent metal stack available within the CMOS process as a hard etch mask for deep-reactive ion etching. Using this structure, to our knowledge, we present the first on-CMOS demonstration of controlled electroporation with the goal of transfection using human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293) stained with Calcein as a model. We report an increase in calcein leaching from the cells subject to increasing electric field intensities with subsequent reuptake confirming cell viability post electroporation. These results are supported by numerical simulation of theoretical pore density which are in good agreement with numerical simulation. In this article, we present a magnetically-tunable quad-band filter with high tunability in the frequency range of 2.1-3.9 GHz. A multi-band filter with four stop-bands comprises of a microstrip line coupled to four frequency-selective split-ring resonators (SRRs). We achieve tuning of individual frequency bands using magnetic reed switches connected in between the capacitive gaps of each split-ring resonator. Application of magnetic field tunes this capacitance affecting its resonance frequency. The measured reflection spectrum of the proposed device matches well with the simulation results. The results show more than 25% tunability for each of the four bands with bandwidth values in the range of 30-70 MHz with over 100% overall tunability in the 2.1-3.9 GHz frequency spectrum.

Physically intimate, real-time monitoring of human biomarkers is becoming increasingly important to modern medicine and patient wellness. Such monitoring is possible due to advances in soft and flexible materials, devices and bioelectronics systems. Compared to other flexible platforms, multifilament textile fibers or threads offer superior flexibility, material diversity, and simple ambient processing to realize a wide range of flexible devices such as sensors, electronics, and microfluidics. In this paper, we realize unique flexible transistors on threads and interconnect them to realize logic gates and small-scale integrated circuits. Compared to prior textile-based transistors, the proposed thread-based transistors (TBTs) are realized with a readily shaped, colloidally dispersed gel consisting of silica nanoparticles and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMI TFSI) ionic liquid for all-around electrolyte gating of a carbon nanotube (CNT) semiconducting network assembled on the thread. We interconnect TBTs with thread-based electrochemical sensors (TBEs) to realize an all-thread based multiplexed diagnostic device. All-thread based platforms are thin, highly flexible and conformal, allowing them to be worn directly on the skin without any polymeric substrate, or sutured transdermally using a needle.

Isolation of cells and their transfection in a controlled manner is an integral step in cell biotechnology. Electric field approaches such as dielectrophoresis (DEP) offers a more viable method for targeted immobilization of cells without any labels. For transfection of cells to incorporate exogenous materials, electrical methods such as electroporation, are preferred over chemical and viral delivery methods since they minimally affect cell viability and can target many types. However prior approaches to both methods required multiple excitation sources, an AC source for DEP-based trapping and another DC source for electroporation. In this paper, we present a first of its kind flow through lab-on-chip platform using a single AC excitation source for combined trapping using negative dielectrophoresis (nDEP) and AC electroporation. Use of AC fields for electroporation eliminates the unwanted side effects of electrolysis or joule heating at electrodes compared to DC electroporation. Adjusting the flow rate and the electrical parameters of the incident AC field precisely controls the operation (trap, trap with electroporation and release). The platform has been validated through trapping and simultaneous transfection of HEK-293 embryonic kidney cells with a plasmid vector containing a fluorescent protein tag. Numerical scaling analysis is provided that indicates promise for individual cell trapping and electroporation using low voltage AC fields.

Three-dimensional printers have revolutionized many scientific fields with its low-cost, accessibility and ease of printing. In this paper, we show how stereolithography (SLA) based 3D printers can enable realization of innovative 3D optical devices formed through the fusion of metamaterials with geometrical optics or MEGO. It utilizes a combination of desktop SLA 3D printer and metal deposition/coating systems. Using this approach, we present innovative metamaterial embedded optical components such as mushroom-type metamaterials, curved wide-angle metamaterial absorbers/reflectors and a frequency selective moth eye hemispherical absorber. Finally a unique MEGO device formed through the fusion of a frequency selective metamaterial with an optical parabolic reflector has been demonstrated that combines their individual properties in a single device. The fabricated MEGO devices operate in the millimeter wave frequency range. Simulation and measurement results using terahertz continuous-wave spectrometer validate their functionality and performance. A fabrication method for a stable entrapment of optically responsive dyes on a thread substrate is proposed to move towards a detection system that can be integrated into clothing. We use the dyes 5,10,15,20-Tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine manganese(III) chloride (MnTPP), methyl red (MR), and bromothymol blue (BTB), for a proof-of-concept. Our optical approach utilizes a smartphone to extract and track changes in the red (R), green (G) and blue (B) channel of the acquired images of the thread to detect the presence of an analyte. We demonstrate sensing of 50-1000 ppm of vapors of ammonia and hydrogen chloride, components commonly found in cleaning supplies, fertilizer, and the production of materials, as well as dissolved gas sensing of ammonia. The devices are shown to be stable over time and with agitation in a centrifuge. This is attributed to the unique dual step fabrication process that entraps the dye in a stable manner. The facile fabrication of colorimetric gas sensing washable threads is ideal for the next generation of smart textile and intelligent clothing.

In this work, a paper-based optoelectronic sensor (paper-nose) is presented for sensing volatile gases in air. The proposed optoelectronic sensor is a combination of both colorimetric (optical) and chemiresistive (electronic) sensor arrays in order to improve the selectivity of the paper-nose in the complex air background. The optical sensors are based on chemoresponsive dyes, namely Reichardt's dye (2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenyl-1-pyridinio)phenolate), bromocresol purple, methyl red, bromothymol blue, brilliant yellow and manganese tetraphenylporphyrin (Mn-TPP). The chemiresistive sensors are based on nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNT), PEDOT:PSS, graphite, and an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMI TFSI). Sensor is fabricated through direct handwriting of sensing materials using a pen on paper without the need of expensive cleanroom facilities. The optoelectronic sensor is tested in ambient air with different volatile gases such as methanol, ammonia, toluene, acetone and ethanol and their mixtures of varying concentrations. The detected electrical and optical responses together form a unique signature for each volatile gas and its mixture. Support-vector machine (SVM) is applied for target classification and detection. This paper presents a novel CMOS image sensor for luminescence imaging with direct lifetime-dependent digital pulse frequency modulated output. Recently reported parasitic insensitive multicycle charge modulation scheme is applied to accumulate photon-generated charges in discrete programmable time windows over multiple exposures. An autoreset pulse serving as the digital output is generated by comparing the multicycle charge integrated output with a reference threshold. The detected luminescence's lifetime is extracted by monitoring the frequency in this digital pulse. To compensate for the background photocurrent generated by ambient light and built-in offset, a charge pump based calibration circuitry is also proposed. Driven by a 10-KHz clock signal with 20-μs pulse width as the integration time window, the proposed circuitry can achieve responsivity and resolution at 575 nm wavelength. It has lifetime resolution of 8 ns. The proposed sensor chip was applied for lifetime measurement of a Ru(dpp) 3 (PF 6 ) 2 fluorescent sample whose lifetime was estimated to be 4.2 μs. A two-dimensional luminescence intensity and lifetime images of a single white LED have also been obtained to further validate its functionality.

Computer vision algorithms are often limited in their application by the large amount of data that must be processed. Mammalian vision systems mitigate this high bandwidth requirement by prioritizing certain regions of the visual field with neural circuits that select the most salient regions. This work introduces a novel and computationally efficient visual saliency algorithm for performing this neuromorphic attention-based data reduction. The proposed algorithm has the added advantage that it is compatible with an analog CMOS design while still achieving comparable performance to existing state-of-the-art saliency algorithms. This compatibility allows for direct integration with the analog-to-digital conversion circuitry present in CMOS image sensors. This integration leads to power savings in the converter by quantizing only the salient pixels. Further system-level power savings are gained by reducing the amount of data that must be transmitted and processed in the digital domain. The analog CMOS compatible formulation relies on a pulse width (i.e., time mode) encoding of the pixel data that is compatible with pulse-mode imagers and slope based converters often used in imager designs. This letter begins by discussing this time-mode encoding for implementing neuromorphic architectures. Next, the proposed algorithm is derived. Hardware-oriented optimizations and modifications to this algorithm are proposed and discussed. Next, a metric for quantifying saliency accuracy is proposed, and simulation results of this metric are presented. Finally, an analog synthesis approach for a time-mode architecture is outlined, and postsynthesis transistor-level simulations that demonstrate functionality of an implementation in a modern CMOS process are discussed.

Topical administration of drugs in a timely manner according to the physiological need at the wound site can enhance the healing rate of chronic wounds. Herein, an electronic wound dressing that enables active topical drug delivery in response to electrically induced pH change is demonstrated for potential treatment of chronic wounds. In this platform, the pH of the dressing is controlled using an electrical field. This allows precise electrical control over the temporal profile of pH-mediated drug release. This engineered dressing is comprised of microfabricated electrodes serving as anode and cathode, a pH sensitive hydrogel, and controlled electronic circuitry. The anode is coated with a pH sensitive poly(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate/Laponite hydrogel layer containing drug loaded chitosan nanoparticles (ChPs). Applying a DC voltage between the electrodes results in a local change in pH near the electrodes. In basic environments found near the anode, the ChPs release their drug due to the dehydration process, while in acidic environments the release profile is negligible. Turning off the DC voltage results in immediate pH recovery and cessation of drug release. Chronic wounds are a major health concern and they affect the lives of more than 25 million people in the United States. They are susceptible to infection and are the leading cause of nontraumatic limb amputations worldwide. The wound environment is dynamic, but their healing rate can be enhanced by administration of therapies at the right time. This approach requires real-time monitoring of the wound environment with on-demand drug delivery in a closed-loop manner. In this paper, a smart and automated flexible wound dressing with temperature and pH sensors integrated onto flexible bandages that monitor wound status in real-time to address this unmet medical need is presented. Moreover, a stimuli-responsive drug releasing system comprising of a hydrogel loaded with thermo-responsive drug carriers and an electronically controlled flexible heater is also integrated into the wound dressing to release the drugs on-demand. The dressing is equipped with a microcontroller to process the data measured by the sensors and to program the drug release protocol for individualized treatment. In this paper we present fabrication of hollow and solid chitosan microneedles using a recently proposed low-cost and cleanroom-free fabrication method called Cross-Over Lines (COL) laser engraving. COL engraving is achieved using a commercial CO 2 laser-cutter to create microneedle molds on acrylic sheet. PDMS is then casted on the acrylic sheet microneedle mold to create base PDMS microneedles which are then used to generate other polymeric needles. In this paper, we cast and cure chitosan solution on the base PDMS microneedles which easily detaches from PDMS needles on drying. The resulted microneedles are hollow chitosan microneedles. We also made solid microneedles by silanizing and casting PDMSon-PDMS microneedles. We report promising preliminary results on drug delivery using these hollow and solid chitosan microneedles.

Luminescence plays an important role in many scientific and industrial applications. This paper proposes a novel complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensor chip that can realize both luminescence intensity and lifetime sensing. To enable high sensitivity, we propose parasitic insensitive multicycle charge modulation scheme for low-light lifetime extraction benefiting from simplicity, accuracy, and compatibility with deeply scaled CMOS process. The designed in-pixel capacitive transimpedance amplifier (CTIA) based structure is able to capture the weak luminescence-induced voltage signal by accumulating photon-generated charges in 25 discrete gated 10-ms time windows and 10-μs pulsewidth. A pinned photodiode on chip with 1.04 pA dark current is utilized for luminescence detection. The proposed CTIA-based circuitry can achieve 2.1-mV/(nW/cm 2 ) responsivity and 4.38-nW/cm 2 resolution at 630 nm wavelength for intensity measurement and 45-ns resolution for lifetime measurement. The sensor chip is employed for measuring time constants and luminescence lifetimes of an InGaN-based white light-emitting diode at different wavelengths. In addition, we demonstrate accurate measurement of the lifetime of an oxygen sensitive chromophore with sensitivity to oxygen concentration of 7.5%/ppm and 6%/ppm in both intensity and lifetime domain. This CMOS-enabled oxygen sensor was then employed to test water quality from different sources (tap water, lakes, and rivers).

Paper-based microfluidic devices with screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) for electrochemical sensing are popular for low-cost point-of-care diagnostics. The electroactive sensing area in these devices is always the irregular, bottom-SPE surface which is in contact with the analyte flowing within the paper substrate. Unfortunately, this results in an electroactive area which varies widely from sensor to sensor. In this paper, we present a three-dimensional paper-based analytical device with a hollow 3D fluid reservoir which allows for use of a more uniform top-SPE surface as the electroactive sensing area. The use of this isolated reservoir eliminates the need for dielectric inks used in conventional SPEs on paper. Our sensors are fabricated using a combination of wax-printing, screen-printing and simple folding via a cleanroom free process without the need for expensive equipment. Additionally, for the first time, we demonstrate an electrochemical paper-based analytical device with a custom designed potentiostat integrated circuit (IC) as a miniaturized reader. The versatility of the sensor is demonstrated through voltammetric, amperometric and potentiometric measurements of important biochemical analytes such as dopamine, glucose and pH. The 3D ePAD together with a custom CMOS potentiostat demonstrates a low-cost, versatile, self-contained system suitable for point-of-care diagnostic devices.

Oxygen is essential to cell survival and tissue function. Not surprisingly, ischemia resulting from myocardial infarction induces cell death and tissue necrosis. Attempts to regenerate myocardial tissue with cell based therapies exacerbate the hypoxic stress by further increasing the metabolic burden. In consequence, implanted tissue engineered cardiac tissues suffer from hypoxia-induced cell death. Here, we report on the generation of oxygen-generating hydrogels composed of calcium peroxide (CPO) laden gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA). CPO-GelMA hydrogels released significant amounts of oxygen for over a period of 5 days under hypoxic conditions (1% O 2 ). The released oxygen proved sufficient to relieve the metabolic stress of cardiac side population cells that were encapsulated within CPO-GelMA hydrogels. In particular, incorporation of CPO in GelMA hydrogels strongly enhanced cell viability as compared to GelMA-only hydrogels. Importantly, CPO-based oxygen generation reduced cell death by limiting hypoxia-induced necrosis. The current study demonstrates that CPO based oxygen-generating hydrogels could be used to transiently provide oxygen to cardiac cells under ischemic conditions. Therefore, oxygen generating materials such as CPO-GelMA can improve cell-based therapies aimed at treatment or regeneration of infarcted myocardial tissue.

We present a disposable low cost paper-based metamaterial for sensing liquids based on their dielectric properties. The sensor is based on resonance shift due to the change in the effective capacitance of each resonator in the metamaterial array. Key novelty in the design is the implementation of metamaterial on low cost and ubiquitous paper substrate. This metamaterial-on-paper sensor is fabricated in a totally cleanroom-free process using wax printing and screen printing. Wax patterning of paper enables creation of microfluidic channels such that liquid analytes can be delivered to each metamaterial unit cell for sensing. Screen printing is used to implement disc shaped resonator unit cells. We demonstrate sensing of liquids: Oil, methanol, glycerol and water each showing an average resonance frequency shift of 1.12 (9.6%), 4.12 (35.4%), 8.76 (75.3%) and 11.63 GHz (100%) around the center frequency of around 94 GHz respectively. Being label-free, this approach can be expanded to sense other liquids based on their dielectric constants.

In this work, pH sensing directly in biological media using three dimensional liquid gated graphene transistors is presented. The sensor is made of suspended network of graphene coated all around with thin layer of hafnium oxide (HfO2), showing high sensitivity and sensing beyond the Debye-screening limit. The performance of the pH sensor is validated by measuring the pH of isotonic buffered, Dulbecco's phosphate buffered saline (DPBS) solution, and of blood serum derived from Sprague-Dawley rat. The pH sensor shows high sensitivity of 71 ± 7 mV/pH even in high ionic strength media with molarities as high as 289 ± 1 mM. High sensitivity of this device is owing to suspension of three dimensional graphene in electrolyte which provides all around liquid gating of graphene, leading to higher electrostatic coupling efficiency of electrolyte to the channel and higher gating control of transistor channel by ions in the electrolyte. Coating graphene with hafnium oxide film (HfO2) provides binding sites for hydrogen ions, which results in higher sensitivity and sensing beyond the Debye-screening limit. Recent research activities in the area of low-cost sensing and diagnostics that are realized on cellulosic paper substrate are presented. First a three-dimensional origami paper-based analytical device (omPAD) with multiple electrochemical sensors, an integrated sample reservoir and tight integration with a custom CMOS potentiostat is presented. Second, an optical sensor array with built-in microfluidic channel for sample delivery is presented. The sensors are fabricated using a combination of wax printing and screen-printing using a solution based approach in ambient conditions without the need for expensive fabrication equipment or a cleanroom. Readout is based on using existing consumer grade electronic devices like flatbed scanner (for optical sensor) or custom designed CMOS potentiostat (for electrochemical sensors). Together the 3D paper-based analytical device with integrated sensor, microfluidics and portable readout instrumentation demonstrates a low-cost, self-contained system suitable for sensing and point-of-care diagnostics.

Threads, traditionally used in the apparel industry, have recently emerged as a promising material for the creation of tissue constructs and biomedical implants for organ replacement and repair. The wicking property and flexibility of threads also make them promising candidates for the creation of three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic circuits. In this paper, we report on thread-based microfluidic networks that interface intimately with biological tissues in three dimensions. We have also developed a suite of physical and chemical sensors integrated with microfluidic networks to monitor physiochemical tissue properties, all made from thread, for direct integration with tissues toward the realization of a thread-based diagnostic device (TDD) platform. The physical and chemical sensors are fabricated from nanomaterial-infused conductive threads and are connected to electronic circuitry using thread-based flexible interconnects for readout, signal conditioning, and wireless transmission. To demonstrate the suite of integrated sensors, we utilized TDD platforms to measure strain, as well as gastric and subcutaneous pH in vitro and in vivo ., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The ever increasing demand for bandwidth in wireless communication systems will inevitably lead to the extension of operating frequencies toward the terahertz (THz) band known as the 'THz gap'. Towards closing this gap, we present a multi-level amplitude shift keying (ASK) terahertz wireless communication system using terahertz spatial light modulators (SLM) instead of traditional voltage mode modulation, achieving higher spectral efficiency for high speed communication. The fundamental principle behind this higher efficiency is the conversion of a noisy voltage domain signal to a noise-free binary spatial pattern for effective amplitude modulation of a free-space THz carrier wave. Spatial modulation is achieved using an an active metamaterial array embedded with pseudomorphic high-electron mobility (pHEMT) designed in a consumer-grade galium-arsenide (GaAs) integrated circuit process which enables electronic control of its THz transmissivity. Each array is assembled as individually controllable tiles for transmissive terahertz spatial modulation. Using the experimental data from our metamaterial based modulator, we show that a four-level ASK digital communication system has two orders of magnitude improvement in symbol error rate (SER) for a degradation of 20 dB in transmit signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) using spatial light modulation compared to voltage controlled modulation.

Epidermal pH is an indication of the skin's physiological condition. For example, pH of wound can be correlated to angiogenesis, protease activity, bacterial infection, etc. Chronic nonhealing wounds are known to have an elevated alkaline environment, while healing process occurs more readily in an acidic environment. Thus, dermal patches capable of continuous pH measurement can be used as point-of-care systems for monitoring skin disorder and the wound healing process. Here, pH-responsive hydrogel fibers are presented that can be used for long-term monitoring of epidermal wound condition. pH-responsive dyes are loaded into mesoporous microparticles and incorporated into hydrogel fibers using a microfluidic spinning system. The fabricated pH-responsive microfibers are flexible and can create conformal contact with skin. The response of pH-sensitive fibers with different compositions and thicknesses are characterized. The suggested technique is scalable and can be used to fabricate hydrogel-based wound dressings with clinically relevant dimensions. Images of the pH-sensing fibers during real-time pH measurement can be captured with a smart phone camera for convenient readout on-site. Through image processing, a quantitative pH map of the hydrogel fibers and the underlying tissue can be extracted. Trapping and manipulation of cells are essential operations in numerous studies in biology and life sciences. We discuss the realization of a Lab-on-a-Chip platform for dielectrophoretic trapping and repositioning of cells and microorganisms on a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, which we define here as Lab-on-CMOS (LoC). The LoC platform is based on dielectrophoresis (DEP) which is the force experienced by any dielectric particle including biological entities in non-uniform AC electrical field. DEP force depends on the permittivity of the cells, its size and shape and also on the permittivity of the medium and therefore it enables selective targeting of cells based on their phenotype. In this paper, we address an important matter that of electrode design for DEP for which we propose a three-dimensional (3D) octapole geometry to create highly confined electric fields for trapping and manipulation of cells. Conventional DEP-based platforms are implemented stand-alone on glass, silicon or polymers connected to external infrastructure for electronics and optics, making it bulky and expensive. In this paper, the use of CMOS as a platform provides a pathway to truly miniaturized lab-on-CMOS or LoC platform, where DEP electrodes are designed using built-in multiple metal layers of the CMOS process for effective trapping of cells, with built-in electronics for in-situ impedance monitoring of the cell position. We present electromagnetic simulation results of DEP force for this unique 3D octapole geometry on CMOS. Experimental results with yeast cells validate the design. These preliminary results indicate the promise of using CMOS technology for truly compact miniaturized lab-on-chip platform for cell biotechnology applications.

Topical administration of drugs and growth factors in a controlled fashion can improve the healing process during skin disorders and chronic wounds. To achieve this goal, a dermal patch is engineered that utilizes thermoresponsive drug microcarriers encapsulated within a hydrogel layer attached to a flexible heater with integrated electronic heater control circuitry. The engineered patch conformally covers the wound area and enables controlled drug delivery by electronically adjusting the temperature of the hydrogel layer. The drugs are encapsulated inside microparticles in order to control their release rates. These monodisperse thermoresponsive microparticles containing active molecules are fabricated using a microfluidic device. The system is used to release two different active molecules with molecular weights similar to drugs and growth factors and their release profiles are characterized. Current methods in treating chronic wounds have had limited success in large part due to the open loop nature of the treatment. We have created a localized 3D-printed smart wound dressing platform that will allow for real-time data acquisition of oxygen concentration, which is an important indicator of wound healing. This will serve as the first leg of a feedback loop for a fully optimized treatment mechanism tailored to the individual patient. A flexible oxygen sensor was designed and fabricated with high sensitivity and linear current output. With a series of off-the-shelf electronic components including a programmable-gain analog front-end, a microcontroller and wireless radio, an integrated electronic system with data readout and wireless transmission capabilities was assembled in a compact package. Using an elastomeric material, a bandage with exceptional flexibility and tensile strength was 3D-printed. The bandage contains cavities for both the oxygen sensor and the electronic systems, with contacts interfacing the two systems. Our integrated, flexible platform is the first step toward providing a self-operating, highly optimized remote therapy for chronic wounds.

Paper, a cheap and ubiquitous material, has great potential to be used as low-cost, portable and biodegradable platform for chemical and biological sensing application. In this paper, we are exploring a low-cost, flexible and reliable method to effectively pattern paper for capturing optical dyes and for flow-based delivery of target samples for colorimetric chemical sensing. In this paper, we target the detection of ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2), two of the important environmental and health biomarkers. By functionalizing the paper platform with diverse cross-reactive dyes sensitive to NH3 and CO2, their selective sensing within a certain pH range, as well as their detection at different concentrations can be achieved. The images of paper based device were captured by a flatbed scanner and processed in MATLAB(®) using a RGB model and PCA for quantitative analysis. We present a microfluidic optoelectronic sensor for saliva diagnostics with a potential application for non-invasive early diagnosis of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. The primary identified cause is infection by a gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori. These bacteria secrete the enzyme urease that converts urea into carbon dioxide (CO2) and ammonia (NH3), leading to their elevated levels in breath and body fluids. The proposed optoelectronic sensor will detect clinically relevant levels of CO2 and NH3 in saliva that can potentially be used for early diagnosis of stomach cancer. The sensor is composed of the embedded in a microfluidic device array of microwells filled with ion-exchange polymer microbeads doped with various organic dyes. The optical response of this unique highly diverse sensor is monitored over a broad spectrum, which provides a platform for cross-reactive sensitivity and allows detection of CO2 and NH3 in saliva at ppm levels., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. We propose a novel Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) based Lab-on-Chip (LoC) platform for trapping, rotation and detection of cells and microorganism utilizing dielectrophoresis (DEP). DEP is a highly selective function of the permittivity, size and shape of the entity, and also depends on the permittivity of its environment; these dependencies can be used to identify and trap particles of interest with high precision. Real-time monitoring of such cellular manipulation is also desirable. Towards this goal, we have implemented a three-dimensional (3D) octa-pole electrode structure directly using the built-in metal layers of standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process and demonstrate trapping and rotating of yeast cells. Moreover, we implement an impedance readout circuitry to monitor this process in situ. Paper presented both simulation and experimental results validating the platform.

There is a large variety of nanomaterials each with unique electronic, optical and sensing properties. However, there is currently no paradigm for integration of different nanomaterials on a single chip in a low-cost high-throughput manner. We present a high throughput integration approach based on spatially controlled dielectrophoresis executed sequentially for each nanomaterial type to realize a scalable array of individually addressable assemblies of graphene, carbon nanotubes, metal oxide nanowires and conductive polymers on a single chip. This is a first time where such a diversity of nanomaterials has been assembled on the same layer in a single chip. The resolution of assembly can range from mesoscale to microscale and is limited only by the size and spacing of the underlying electrodes on chip used for assembly. While many applications are possible, the utility of such an array is demonstrated with an example application of a chemical sensor array for detection of volatile organic compounds below parts-per-million sensitivity.

Biodegradable nanofibrous polymeric substrates are used to fabricate suturable, elastic, and flexible electronics and sensors. The fibrous microstructure of the substrate makes it permeable to gas and liquid and facilitates the patterning process. As a proof-of-principle, temperature and strain sensors are fabricated on this elastic substrate and tested in vitro.
