Improving energy efficiency in the building sector is a subject of significant interest, considering the environmental impact of buildings. Energy efficiency involves many aspects, such as occupant comfort, system monitoring and maintenance, data treatment, instrumentation… Physical modeling and calibration, or artificial intelligence, are often employed to explore these different subjects and, thus, to limit energy consumption in buildings. Even though these techniques are well-suited, they have one thing in common, i.e., the need for user cases. This is why we propose to share a part of the large volume of data collected on our modular education building. The building is located on Nanterre's CESI Engineering school campus and welcomes approximately 80 students daily. A network of more than 150 sensors and actuators allows monitoring of the physical behavior of the entire building, preserving optimal comfort and energy consumption. The floor constitutes one of the largest areas within a building with which users interact most frequently in daily activities. Employing floor sensors is vital for smart-building digital twins, wherein triboelectric nanogenerators demonstrate wide application potential due to their good performance and self-powering characteristics. However, their sensing stability, reliability, and multimodality require further enhancement to meet the rapidly evolving demands. Thus, this work introduces a multimodal intelligent flooring system, implementing a 4 × 4 floor array for multimodal information detection (including position, pressure, material, user identity, and activity) and human-machine interactions. The floor unit incorporates a hybrid structure of triboelectric pressure sensors and a top-surface material sensor, facilitating linear and enhanced sensitivity across a wide pressure range (0-800 N), alongside the material recognition capability. The floor array is implemented by an advanced output-ratio method with minimalist output channels, which is insensitive to environmental factors such as humidity and temperature. In addition to multimodal sensing, energy harvesting is co-designed with the pressure sensors for scavenging waste energy to power smart-building sensor nodes. This paper introduces an efficient barrier model for enhancing smart building surveillance in harsh environment with thin walls and structures. After the main research problem of minimizing the total number of wall-recognition surveillance barriers, we propose two distinct algorithms, Centralized Node Deployment and Adaptation Node Deployment, which are designed to address the challenge by strategic placement of surveillance nodes within the smart building. The Centralized Node Deployment aligns nodes along the thin walls, ensuring consistent communication coverage and effectively countering potential disruptions. Conversely, the Adaptation Node Deployment begins with random node placement, which adapts over time to ensure efficient communication across the building. The novelty of this work is in designing a novel barrier system to achieve energy efficiency and reinforced surveillance in a thin-wall environment. Instead of a real environment, we use an ad hoc server for simulations with various scenarios and parameters. Then, two different algorithms are executed through those simulation environments and settings. Also, with detailed discussions, we provide the performance analysis, which shows that both algorithms deliver similar performance metrics over extended periods, indicating their suitability for long-term operation in smart infrastructure.

A dataset of sensor measurements is presented. Our dataset contains discrete measurements of 8 IoT devices located in various places in a research lab at the University of Bristol. Nordic nRF52840 DK IoT devices periodically collects environmental data, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, gas, room light intensity, accelerometer; including also a measurement quality indicator. The measurements were taken every 10 seconds over a six-month period between February and September 2022. In addition, we provide Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of the IoT devices. The data files are formatted as CSV files. There are various software libraries available to access and read this file format. We provide "README.txt" file which explains the repository and how to use dataset. Each data file is named according to its creation date and, once it reaches a size of 1MB, it is compressed and archived. A new folder is created every week to store all the data files from that week automatically. The dataset can be used for drift detection such as malicious or anomaly detection algorithms. It can also be used for smart building applications like occupation detection. This study addresses the pressing issue of energy consumption and efficiency in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), a region experiencing growing demand for energy resources. Temperature control plays a vital role in achieving energy efficiency; however, traditional control systems may struggle to adapt to the non-linear and time-varying characteristics of the problem. To tackle this challenge, a fuzzy petri net (FPN) controller is proposed as a more suitable solution that combines fuzzy logic (FL) and petri nets (PN) to model and simulate complex systems. The main objective of this research is to develop an intelligent energy-saving framework that integrates advanced methodologies and air conditioning (AC) systems to optimize energy utilization and create a comfortable indoor environment. The proposed system incorporates user identification to authorize individuals who can set the temperature, and FL combined with PN is utilized to monitor and transmit their preferred temperature settings to a PID controller for adjustment. The experimental findings demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating the FPN controller with a convertible frequency AC compressor in significantly reducing energy consumption by 94% compared to using the PN controller alone. The utilization of the PN controller alone resulted in a 25% reduction in energy consumption. Conversely, employing a fixed-frequency compressor led to a 40% increase in energy consumption. These results emphasize the advantages of integrating FL into the PN model, as it effectively reduces energy consumption by half, highlighting the potential of the proposed approach for enhancing energy efficiency in AC systems.

Smart, and ultra-low energy consuming Internet of Things (IoTs), wireless sensor networks (WSN), and autonomous devices are being deployed to smart buildings and cities, which require continuous power supply, whereas battery usage has accompanying environmental problems, coupled with additional maintenance cost. We present Home Chimney Pinwheels (HCP) as the Smart Turbine Energy Harvester (STEH) for wind; and Cloud-based remote monitoring of its output data. The HCP commonly serves as an external cap to home chimney exhaust outlets; they have very low inertia to wind; and are available on the rooftops of some buildings. Here, an electromagnetic converter adapted from a brushless DC motor was mechanically fastened to the circular base of an 18-blade HCP. In simulated wind, and rooftop experiments, an output voltage of 0.3 V to 16 V was realised for a wind speed between 0.6 to 16 km/h. This is sufficient to operate low-power IoT devices deployed around a smart city. The harvester was connected to a power management unit and its output data was remotely monitored via the IoT analytic Cloud platform "ThingSpeak" by means of LoRa transceivers, serving as sensors; while also obtaining supply from the harvester. The HCP can be a battery-less "stand-alone" low-cost STEH, with no grid connection, and can be installed as attachments to IoT or wireless sensors nodes in smart buildings and cities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated new needs due to the associated health risks and, more specifically, its rapid infection rate. Prevention measures to avoid contagions in indoor spaces, especially in office and public buildings (e.g., hospitals, public administration, educational centres, etc.), have led to the need for adequate ventilation to dilute the possible concentration of the virus. This article presents our contribution to this new challenge, namely the Ventilation Early Warning System (VEWS) which has aims to adapt the operation of the current Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems to the ventilation needs of diaphanous workspaces, based on a Smart Campus Digital Twin (SCDT) framework approach, while maintaining sustainability. Different technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms are combined to collect and integrate monitoring data (historical records, real-time information, and location-related patterns) to carry out forecasting simulations in this digital twin. The generated outputs serve to assist facility managers in their building governance, considering the appropriate application of health measures to reduce the risk of coronavirus contagion in combination with sustainability criteria. Smart workplace Internet of Things (IoT) solutions rely on several sensors deployed efficiently in the workplace environment to collect accurate data to meet system goals. A vital issue for these sensor-based IoT solutions is privacy. Ideally, the occupants must be monitored discreetly, and the strategies for maintaining privacy are dependent on the nature of the data required. This paper proposes a new sensor design approach for IoT solutions in the workplace that protects occupants' privacy. We focus on a novel sensor that autonomously detects and captures human movements in the office to monitor a person's sedentary behavior. The sensor guides an eHealth solution that uses continuous feedback about desk behaviors to prompt healthy movement breaks for seated workers. The proposed sensor and its privacy-preserving characteristics can enhance the eHealth solution system's performance. Compared to self-reporting, intrusive, and other data collection techniques, this sensor can collect the information reliably and timely. We also present the data analysis specific to this new sensor that measures two physical distance parameters in real-time and uses their difference to determine human actions. This architecture aims to collect precise data at the sensor design level rather than to protect privacy during the data analysis phase.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) has arisen as one of the most severe problems due to its ongoing mutations as well as the absence of a suitable cure for this virus. The virus primarily spreads and replicates itself throughout huge groups of individuals through daily touch, which regretfully can happen in several unanticipated way. As a result, the sole viable attempts to constrain the spread of this new virus are to preserve social distance, perform contact tracing, utilize suitable safety gear, and enforce quarantine measures. In order to control the virus's proliferation, scientists and officials are considering using several social distancing models to detect possible diseased individuals as well as extremely risky areas to sustain separation and lockdown procedures. However, models and systems in the existing studies heavily depend on the human factor only and reveal serious privacy vulnerabilities. In addition, no social distancing model/technique was found for monitoring, tracking, and scheduling vehicles for smart buildings as a social distancing approach so far. In this study, a new system design that performs real-time monitoring, tracking, and scheduling of vehicles for smart buildings is proposed for the first time named the social distancing approach for limiting the number of vehicles (SDA-LNV). The proposed model employs LiFi technology as a wireless transmission medium for the first time in the social distance (SD) approach. The proposed work is considered as Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. It might aid authorities in counting the volume of likely affected people. In addition, the proposed system design is expected to help reduce the infection rate inside buildings in areas where traditional social distancing techniques are not used or applicable.

Long-term care refers to any support, both medical and non-medical, provided to the elderly with a chronic illness or disability due to physical or mental conditions. Since the cost of long-term care insurance is not inexpensive, low-cost devices and sensors can be used to create medical assistance systems to reduce human maintenance costs. The requirement of security and privacy under healthcare information protection is a critical issue for internet of medical things (IoMT) data transmission. In this paper, we designed an IoMT security robot for a long-term care system. The goal of this IoMT security robot is to provide secure transmission of the residents' private information. It is composed of three layers, namely, collection, encryption, and transmission. The function of the IoMT security robot is to first collect data from the patient or the elderly, then provide efficient data encryption, and deliver secured data transmission mechanisms to send the valuable data to the cloud. This IoMT security robot also has a server authentication mechanism, and a support IoT and IoMT devices inspection function. Our evaluation results showed that even when we utilized a low power consumption device like Raspberry Pi, AES algorithm achieved an encrypt and decrypt of 100-100 K bytes under 9 ms, which is a lot better than ECC, which takes about 104 ms. With the awakening of health awareness, people are raising a series of health-related requirements for the buildings they live in, with a view to improving their living conditions. In this context, BIM (Building Information Modeling) makes full use of cutting-edge theories and technologies in many domains such as health, environment, and information technology to provide a new way for engineers to design and build various healthy and green buildings. Specifically, sensors are playing an important role in achieving smart building goals by monitoring the surroundings of buildings, objects and people with the help of cloud computing technology. In addition, it is necessary to quickly determine the optimal sensor placement to save energy and minimize the number of sensors for a building, which is a de-trial task for the cloud platform due to the limited number of sensors available and massive candidate locations for each sensor. In this paper, we propose a Fast Sensor Placement Location Optimization approach (FSPLO) to solve the BIM problem in cloud-aided smart buildings. In particular, we quickly filter out the repeated candidate locations of sensors in FSPLO using Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) techniques to maintain only a small number of optimized locations for deploying sensors around buildings. In this way, we can significantly reduce the number of sensors used for health and green buildings. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important parameter in protecting the occupants of an indoor environment. Previous studies have shown that an indoor environment with poor ventilation increases airborne virus transmission. Existing research has concluded that high ventilation rates can reduce the risk of individuals in indoor environments being infected. However, most existing ventilation systems are designed to be efficient under non-pandemic conditions. Ultimately, indoor environments will become hotspots for the transmission of airborne viruses. Current infection risk assessments can estimate virus transmission via airborne routes, but with limited information sharing among stakeholders. Our own research did not identify any systems that integrate risk assessments with smart sensors in order to support information sharing with experts in indoor environments in their decision-making process. To fill this gap, we designed a blockchain-based prototype (AIRa) that integrates CO 2 smart sensor data with infection risk assessments from a post-pandemic perspective. This system generates two types of alerts: (1) P-Alert and (2) R0-Alert for decision-making by building owners, such as increasing the ventilation rate or track and trace, as needed. AIRa shows various benefits over three existing infection-control alert systems. Our solution stores and shares information such as the timestamp and room number, instead of storing building user's personal information. Our approach does not require a QR code to be scanned or a mobile app to be downloaded in order to enable track and trace. However, AIRa is still an early prototype for evaluating the risks of airborne virus transmission in smart building environments. With the growing need to obtain information about power consumption in buildings, it is necessary to investigate how to collect, store, and visualize such information using low-cost solutions. Currently, the available building management solutions are expensive and challenging to support small and medium-sized buildings. Unfortunately, not all buildings are intelligent, making it difficult to obtain such data from energy measurement devices and appliances or access such information. The internet of things (IoT) opens new opportunities to support real-time monitoring and control to achieve future smart buildings. This work proposes an IoT platform for remote monitoring and control of smart buildings, which consists of four-layer architecture: power layer, data acquisition layer, communication network layer, and application layer. The proposed platform allows data collection for energy consumption, data storage, and visualization. Various sensor nodes and measurement devices are considered to collect information on energy use from different building spaces. The proposed solution has been designed, implemented, and tested on a university campus considering three scenarios: an office, a classroom, and a laboratory. Restricted by the hierarchical and centralized system architecture, smart buildings face challenges such as limited adaptability and robustness, single application functionalities, and complex configurations. To address the above shortcomings, we learn from the activity patterns of natural bee swarms and propose Honeycomb, an open-source smart-building solution with fully distributed architecture. Honeycomb is a robust, flexible smart-building solution without any central server or global leader. An asynchronous leaderless spanning tree-based communication pattern is developed to generate and maintain the communication topology of Honeycomb in real time. Benefiting from this communication pattern, Honeycomb has plug-and-play ability. Various distributed applications are designed for building operating tasks and are deployed in a real Honeycomb prototype. The prototype demonstrates significant energy efficiency improvement from the control of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system with video-based occupancy information. The latest progress in information and communication technology (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have opened up new opportunities for real-time monitoring and controlling of cities' structures, infrastructures, and services. In this context, smart water management technology provides the data and tools to help users more effectively manage water usage. Data collected with smart water devices are being integrated with building management systems to show how much water is used by occupants as well as to identify the consumption areas to use water more efficiently. By this approach, smart buildings represent an innovative solution that enhances a city's sustainability and contributes to overcoming environmental challenges due to increasing population and climate change. One of the main challenges is resource-saving and recovery. Water is an all-important need of all living beings, and the concerns of its scarcity impose a transition to innovative and sustainable management starting from the building scale. Thus, this manuscript aims to provide an updated and valuable overview for researchers, consumers, and stakeholders regarding implementing smart and sustainable technologies for water resource management, primarily for building-scale uses.

Human activity recognition (HAR) is fundamental to many services in smart buildings. However, providing sufficiently robust activity recognition systems that could be confidently deployed in an ordinary real environment remains a major challenge. Much of the research done in this area has mainly focused on recognition through pre-segmented sensor data. In this paper, real-time human activity recognition based on streaming sensors is investigated. The proposed methodology incorporates dynamic event windowing based on spatio-temporal correlation and the knowledge of activity trigger sensor to recognize activities and record new events. The objective is to determine whether the last event that just happened belongs to the current activity, or if it is the sign of the start of a new activity. For this, we consider the correlation between sensors in view of what can be seen in the history of past events. The proposed algorithm contains three steps: verification of sensor correlation (SC), verification of temporal correlation (TC), and determination of the activity triggering the sensor. The proposed approach is applied to a real case study: the "Aruba" dataset from the CASAS database. F1 score is used to assess the quality of the segmentation. The results show that the proposed approach segments several activities (sleeping, bed to toilet, meal preparation, eating, housekeeping, working, entering home, and leaving home) with an F1 score of 0.63-0.99.

Graphene papers (GPs) have revolutionized the area of sensors toward low-cost, user-friendly and wearable/portable owning to their unique properties such as scalable production capacity, tunable microstructure, and extraordinary mechanical flexibility. They can be utilized as versatile building blocks by regulating their architectures to enhance various properties like electronic property, thermal conductivity and mechanical strength. Furthermore, thanks to the excellent compatibility, GPs as support materials are able to associate with other materials through various interaction forces to realize specific functionalization. With the impressive performances mentioned above, lots of smart devices like flexible sensors, advanced wearable/stretchable electronics, and high-performance point-of-care analytical devices are continually and rapidly being developed. Herein, this review aims at offering a critical engineering insight from smart architecture of macroscopic GPs to sensor application, with the emphasis on purpose-driven specific dual-mode functionalization (structural functionalization and foreign materials functionalization). We summarize the multiple possibilities to functionalize graphene and its derivative based papers/films/membranes. In this paper, an intelligent data analysis method for modeling and optimizing energy efficiency in smart buildings through Data Analytics (DA) is proposed. The objective of this proposal is to provide a Decision Support System (DSS) able to support experts in quantifying and optimizing energy efficiency in smart buildings, as well as reveal insights that support the detection of anomalous behaviors in early stages. Firstly, historical data and Energy Efficiency Indicators (EEIs) of the building are analyzed to extract the knowledge from behavioral patterns of historical data of the building. Then, using this knowledge, a classification method to compare days with different features, seasons and other characteristics is proposed. The resulting clusters are further analyzed, inferring key features to predict and quantify energy efficiency on days with similar features but with potentially different behaviors. Finally, the results reveal some insights able to highlight inefficiencies and correlate anomalous behaviors with EE in the smart building. The approach proposed in this work was tested on the BlueNet building and also integrated with Eugene, a commercial EE tool for optimizing energy consumption in smart buildings.

Occupants are the core of the built environment. Traditional heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems operate with predefined schedules and maximum occupancy assumptions with no consideration of specific occupant information. These generalized assumptions usually do not align with the actual demand and result in over-conditioning and occupant discomfort. In recent years, with the aid of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) and Computer Science (CS), it is possible to acquire real-time and accurate occupant information to satisfy the exact thermal requirement through specific HVAC control in one particular built environment. This mechanism is called HVAC "Occupant-centric Control (OCC)." HVAC OCC strategy starts with collecting the occupant's information (e.g., presence/absence) and then applies it to meet the occupant's requirement (e.g., thermal comfort). However, even though some research studies and field pilot demonstrations have been devoted to the field of OCC, there is a lack of systematic knowledge about occupant data, which is the principal component of OCC for HVAC researchers and practitioners. To fill this gap, this review paper discusses OCC with a particular emphasis on occupant information and investigates how this information can assist HVAC operation in providing an acceptable built environment in required spaces during the required time. This paper presented the architecture and construction of a novel smart building system that could monitor and control buildings' use in a safe and optimal way. The system operates on a Raspberry local server, which could be connected via the cloud technology to a central platform. The local system includes nine modules that inter-communicate. The system detects sensor faults, and provides a friendly interface to occupants. The paper presented the software architecture IoT used for the building monitoring and the use of this system for the management of fifteen social housing units during a year. The system allowed the investigation of indoor comfort and both energy and hot water consumptions. Data analysis resulted in the detection of abnormal energy consumptions. The system could be easily used in buildings' management. It works in a plug-and-play mode.

Smart buildings in big cities are now equipped with an internet of things (IoT) infrastructure to constantly monitor different aspects of people's daily lives via IoT devices and sensor networks. The malfunction and low quality of service (QoS) of such devices and networks can severely cause property damage and perhaps loss of life. Therefore, it is important to quantify different metrics related to the operational performance of the systems that make up such computational architecture even in advance of the building construction. Previous studies used analytical models considering different aspects to assess the performance of building monitoring systems. However, some critical points are still missing in the literature, such as (i) analyzing the capacity of computational resources adequate to the data demand, (ii) representing the number of cores per machine, and (iii) the clustering of sensors by location. This work proposes a queuing network based message exchange architecture to evaluate the performance of an intelligent building infrastructure associated with multiple processing layers: edge and fog. We consider an architecture of a building that has several floors and several rooms in each of them, where all rooms are equipped with sensors and an edge device. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis of the model was performed using the Design of Experiments (DoE) method to identify bottlenecks in the proposal. A series of case studies were conducted based on the DoE results. The DoE results allowed us to conclude, for example, that the number of cores can have more impact on the response time than the number of nodes. Simulations of scenarios defined through DoE allow observing the behavior of the following metrics: average response time, resource utilization rate, flow rate, discard rate, and the number of messages in the system. Three scenarios were explored: (i) scenario A (varying the number of cores), (ii) scenario B (varying the number of fog nodes), and (iii) scenario C (varying the nodes and cores simultaneously). Depending on the number of resources (nodes or cores), the system can become so overloaded that no new requests are supported. The queuing network based message exchange architecture and the analyses carried out can help system designers optimize their computational architectures before building construction.

Conventional wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in smart home-building (SHB) are typically driven by batteries, limiting their lifespan and the maximum number of deployable units. To satisfy the energy demand for the next generation of SHB which can interconnect WSNs to make the internet of smart home-building (IoSHB), this study introduces the design and implementation of a 250 mW to 2.3 W energy harvesting device. The proposed device is dynamically autonomous owing to the integration of embedded solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and power storage through a supercapacitor (SC; 5 V, 0.47 F) capable of powering WSNs for 95 s (up to 4.11 V). The deployed device can harvest indoor and outdoor ambient light at a minimum illumination of 50 lux and a maximum illumination of 200 lux. Moreover, the proposed system supports wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to do data transfer to a webserver as a complete internet of things (IoT) device. A customized android dashboard is further developed for data monitoring on a smartphone. All in all, this self-powered WSN node can interface with the users of the SHBs for displaying ambient data, which demonstrates its promising applicability and stability.

The emergence of COVID-19 pandemic is causing tremendous impact on our daily lives, including the way people interact with buildings. Leveraging the advances in machine learning and other supporting digital technologies, recent attempts have been sought to establish exciting smart building applications that facilitates better facility management and higher energy efficiency. However, relying on the historical data collected prior to the pandemic, the resulting smart building applications are not necessarily effective under the current ever-changing situation due to the drifts of data distribution. This paper investigates the bidirectional interaction between human and buildings that leads to dramatic change of building performance data distributions post-pandemic, and evaluates the applicability of typical facility management and energy management applications against these changes. According to the evaluation, this paper recommends three mitigation measures to rescue the applications and embedded machine learning algorithms from the data inconsistency issue in the post-pandemic era. Among these measures, incorporating occupancy and behavioural parameters as independent variables in machine learning algorithms is highlighted. The importance of the security of building management systems (BMSs) has increased given the advances in the technologies used. Since the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system in buildings accounts for about 40% of the total energy consumption, threats targeting the HVAC system can be quite severe and costly. Given the limitations on accessing a real HVAC system for research purposes and the unavailability of public labeled datasets to investigate the cybersecurity of HVAC systems, this paper presents a dataset of a 12-zone HVAC system that was collected from a simulation model using the Transient System Simulation Tool (TRNSYS). The development of the smart building concept and building automation field is based on the exponential evolution of monitoring and control technologies. Residents of the smart building must interact with the monitoring and control system. A widely used method is specific applications executed on smartphones, tablets, and PCs with Bluetooth connection to the building control system. At this time, smartphones are increasingly used in everyday life for payments, reading newspapers, monitoring activity, and interacting with smart homes. The devices used to build the control system are interconnected through a specific network, one of the most widespread being the Building Automation and Control Network (BACnet) network. Here, we propose the use of the BACnet Application Layer over Bluetooth. We present a proposal of a concept and a practical implementation that can be used to test and validate the operation of the BACnet Application Layer over Bluetooth.

The Internet of things presents tremendous opportunities for the energy management and occupant comfort improvement in smart buildings by making data of environmental and equipment parameters more readily and continuously available. Long-range (LoRa) technology provides a comprehensive wireless solution for data acquisition and communication in smart buildings through its superior performance, such as the long-range transmission, low power consumption and strong penetration. Starting with two vital indicators (network transmission delay and packet loss rate), this study explored the coverage and transmission performances of LoRa in buildings in detail. We deployed three LoRa receiver nodes on the same floor and eight LoRa receiver nodes on different floors in a 16-story building, respectively, where data acquisition terminal was located in the center of the whole building. The communication performance of LoRa was evaluated by changing the send power, communication rate, payload length and position of the wireless module. In the current research, the metrics of LoRa were quantified to facilitate its practical application in smart buildings. To the best of our knowledge, this may be the first academic research evaluating RTT performance of LoRa via practical experiments.

Modeling and control of the heating feature of living spaces remain challenging tasks because of the intrinsic nonlinear nature of the involved processes as well as the strong nonlinearity of the entailed dynamic parameters in those processes. Although nowadays, adaptive heating controllers represent a crucial need for smart building energy management systems (SBEMS) as well as an appealing perspective for their effectiveness in optimizing energy efficiency, unfortunately, the leakage of models competent in handling the complexity of real living spaces' heating processes means the control strategies implemented in most SBEMSs are still conventional. Within this context and by considering that the living space's occupation rate (i.e., by users or residents) may affect the model and the issued heating control strategy of the concerned living space, we have investigated the design and implementation of a data-driven machine learning-based identification of the building's living space dynamic heating conduct, taking into account the occupancy (by the residents) of the heated space. In fact, the proposed modeling strategy takes advantage, on the one hand, of the forecasting capacity of the time-series of the nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) model, and on the other hand, from the multi-layer perceptron's (MLP) learning and generalization skills. The proposed approach has been implemented and applied for modeling the dynamic heating conduct of a real five-floor building's living spaces located at Senart Campus of University Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), taking into account their occupancy (by users of this public building). The obtained results assessing the accuracy and addictiveness of the investigated hybrid machine learning-based approach are reported and discussed.

This paper aims to contribute to the field of ambient intelligence from the perspective of real environments, where noise levels in datasets are significant, by showing how machine learning techniques can contribute to the knowledge creation, by promoting software sensors. The created knowledge can be actionable to develop features helping to deal with problems related to minimally labelled datasets. A case study is presented and analysed, looking to infer high-level rules, which can help to anticipate abnormal activities, and potential benefits of the integration of these technologies are discussed in this context. The contribution also aims to analyse the usage of the models for the transfer of knowledge when different sensors with different settings contribute to the noise levels. Finally, based on the authors' experience, a framework proposal for creating valuable and aggregated knowledge is depicted.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a paradigm shift from host-to-host Internet Protocol (IP)-based communication to content-based communication. In ICN, the content-retrieval process employs names that are given through different naming schemes such as hierarchical, flat, attribute, and hybrid. Among different ICN architectures, Named-Data Networking (NDN) has gained much interest in the research community and is actively being explored for the Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor networks, and follows a hierarchical naming format. NDN protocol follows a pull-based communication model where the content consumer gets content irrespective of the location of the content provider. The content provider in NDN and sensor networks can be considered to be a distributed database that monitors or controls the environment and caches the sensed data or controls information into their memory. The proposed Name-INtegrated Query (NINQ) framework for NDN-based IoT provides a flexible, expressive, and secure query mechanism that supports content retrieval as well as control and configuration command exchange among various nodes in a smart building. Different use cases are presented in this paper that expand on the behavior of proposed query framework in different scenarios. Simulation results of data collection and exchange of control commands show that proposed query framework significantly improves Interest Satisfaction Rate (ISR), Command Satisfaction Rate (CSR), energy efficiency, and average delay. Moreover, it is evident from the simulation results that proposed query framework significantly reduces the number of transmissions in the network in both data collection and exchange of control command scenarios, which improves the network performance.

Smart buildings with connected lighting and sensors are likely to become one of the first large-scale applications of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, as the number of interconnected IoT devices is expected to rise exponentially, the amount of collected data will be enormous but highly redundant. Devices will be required to pre-process data locally or at least in their vicinity. Thus, local data fusion, subject to constraint communications will become necessary. In that sense, distributed architectures will become increasingly unavoidable. Anticipating this trend, this paper addresses the problem of presence detection in a building as a distributed sensing of a hidden Markov model (DS-HMM) with limitations on the communication. The key idea in our work is the use of a posteriori probabilities or likelihood ratios (LR) as an appropriate "interface" between heterogeneous sensors with different error profiles. We propose an efficient transmission policy, jointly with a fusion algorithm, to merge data from various HMMs running separately on all sensor nodes but with all the models observing the same Markovian process. To test the feasibility of our DS-HMM concept, a simple proof-of-concept prototype was used in a typical office environment. The experimental results show full functionality and validate the benefits. Our proposed scheme achieved high accuracy while reducing the communication requirements. The concept of DS-HMM and a posteriori probabilities as an interface is suitable for many other applications for distributed information fusion in wireless sensor networks.

Smart buildings will soon be a reality due to innovative Internet of Things (IoT) applications. IoT applications can be employed not only for energy management in a building, but also for solving emerging social issues, such as inter-floor noise-related disputes in apartments and the solitary death of an elderly person. For example, acceleration sensors can be used to detect abnormal floor vibrations, such as large vibrations due to jumping children or unusual vibrations in a house where an elderly person is living alone. However, the installation of a conventional accelerometer can be restricted because of the sense of privacy invasion. In this study, a self-powered wireless sensor using a threshold-based method is studied for the detection of floor vibrations. Vibration levels of a bare slab in a testbed are first measured when a slab is impacted by a bang machine and an impact ball. Second, a piezoelectric energy harvester using slab vibration is manufactured to generate electrical power over a threshold. Next, the correlation among harvested energy, floor vibration, and impact noise is studied to check whether harvested energy can be employed as a condition detection threshold. Finally, a prototype of a self-powered wireless sensor to detect abnormal conditions in floor vibrations is developed and its applicability is demonstrated.

Tiles are commonly used to cover the exteriors of buildings in Taiwan. However, older buildings in Taiwan encounter the problem of tiles falling off due to natural deterioration, which is unsightly, and more importantly, a threat to public safety. Nevertheless, no current method exists that can effectively detect flaws in building tiles in real time. This study combined the fields of civil engineering and automatic control to reduce risks caused by falling tiles by improving real-time detection of at-risk areas. Micro-resistance was combined with fuzzy theory as the logical foundation for evaluating tile status. String-type strain gauges were adopted as sensors to design a smart skin sensory system that could measure signs of deterioration in tile surface lesions. The design was found to be feasible. In the future, it can be further developed for facile real-time assessment of tile status.

At present, the domotization of homes and public buildings is becoming increasingly popular. Domotization is most commonly applied to the field of energy management, since it gives the possibility of managing the consumption of the devices connected to the electric network, the way in which the users interact with these devices, as well as other external factors that influence consumption. In buildings, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems have the highest consumption rates. The systems proposed so far have not succeeded in optimizing the energy consumption associated with a HVAC system because they do not monitor all the variables involved in electricity consumption. For this reason, this article presents an agent approach that benefits from the advantages provided by a Multi-Agent architecture (MAS) deployed in a Cloud environment with a wireless sensor network (WSN) in order to achieve energy savings. The agents of the MAS learn social behavior thanks to the collection of data and the use of an artificial neural network (ANN). The energy sector is closely interconnected with the building sector and integrated Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) solutions for effective energy management supporting decision-making at building, district and city level are key fundamental elements for making a city Smart. The available systems are designed and intended exclusively for a predefined number of cases and systems without allowing for expansion and interoperability with other applications that is partially due to the lack of semantics. This paper presents an advanced Internet of Things (IoT) based system for intelligent energy management in buildings. A semantic framework is introduced aiming at the unified and standardised modelling of the entities that constitute the building environment. Suitable rules are formed, aiming at the intelligent energy management and the general modus operandi of Smart Building. In this context, an IoT-based system was implemented, which enhances the interactivity of the buildings' energy management systems. The results from its pilot application are presented and discussed. The Internet of Things (IoT) has gained an incredible importance in the communication and networking industry due to its innovative solutions and advantages in diverse domains. The IoT' network is a network of smart physical objects: devices, vehicles, buildings, etc. The IoT has a number of applications ranging from smart home, smart surveillance to smart healthcare systems. Since IoT consists of various heterogeneous devices that exhibit different traffic patterns and expect different quality of service (QoS) in terms of data rate, bit error rate and the stability index of the channel, therefore, in this paper, we formulated an optimization problem to assign channels to heterogeneous IoT devices within a smart building for the provisioning of their desired QoS. To solve this problem, a novel particle swarm optimization-based algorithm is proposed. Then, exhaustive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. Smart applications of the Internet of Things are improving the performance of buildings, reducing energy demand. Local and smart networks, soft computing methodologies, machine intelligence algorithms and pervasive sensors are some of the basics of energy optimization strategies developed for the benefit of environmental sustainability and user comfort. This work presents a distributed sensor-processor-communication decision-making architecture to improve the acquisition, storage and transfer of thermal energy in buildings. The developed system is implemented in a near Zero-Energy Building (nZEB) prototype equipped with a built-in thermal solar collector, where optical properties are analysed; a low enthalpy geothermal accumulation system, segmented in different temperature zones; and an envelope that includes a dynamic thermal barrier. An intelligent control of this dynamic thermal barrier is applied to reduce the thermal energy demand (heating and cooling) caused by daily and seasonal weather variations. Simulations and experimental results are presented to highlight the nZEB thermal energy reduction.
