UVA-induced facial fluorescence (UVAF) is recognized as an objective measurement technique to quantify the severity of acne. However, notable inconsistencies in quantitative outcomes have been observed in various studies, possibly due to the fact that different colors of fluorescence represent different pathophysiological implications. This study investigated the pathophysiological importance of UVAF color differences and improved its reliability in assessing acne severity. MIDOO Smart Skin Imager was used to capture UVAF and analyze the correlation between fluorescence colors and acne lesions. Techniques such as two-photon excited fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, western blot, and high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) were used to examine the biochemical composition and structure of comedonal plugs and follicular casts associated with different fluorescence colors. We found that green fluorescence correlates with non-inflammatory acne lesions (comedones), while orange-red fluorescence shows no correlation with either type of lesion. Green fluorescence is associated with higher levels of keratin, indicating keratinization, while orange-red fluorescence is associated with porphyrin from S. epidermidis. UVAF color differences - orange-red are from porphyrins and green from keratin. In this article, we explore multi-material additive manufacturing (MMAM) for conductive trace printing using molten metal microdroplets on polymer substrates to enhance digital signal transmission. Investigating microdroplet spread informs design rules for adjacent trace printing. We studied the effects of print distance on trace morphology and resolution, noting that printing distance showed almost no change in the printed trace pitch. Crosstalk interference between adjacent signal traces was analyzed across frequencies and validated both experimentally and through simulation; no crosstalk was visible for printed traces at input frequencies below 600 kHz. Moreover, we demonstrate printed trace reliability against thermal shock, whereby no discontinuation in conductive traces was observed. Our findings establish design guidelines for MMAM electronics, advancing digital signal transmission capabilities.

The technology to jet print metal lines with precise shape fidelity on diverse substrates is gaining higher interest across multiple research fields. It finds applications in additively manufactured flexible electronics, environmentally friendly and sustainable electronics, sensor devices for medical applications, and fabricating electrodes for solar cells. This paper provides an experimental investigation to deepen insights into the non-contact printing of solder lines using StarJet technology, eliminating the need for surface activation, substrate heating, curing, or post-processing. Moreover, it employs bulk metal instead of conventional inks or pastes, leading to cost-effective production and enhanced conductivity. The effect of molten metal temperature, substrate temperature, standoff distance, and printing velocity was investigated on polymer foils (i.e., PET sheets). Robust printing parameters were derived to print uniform, bulge-free, bulk metal lines suitable for additive manufacturing applications. The applicability of the derived parameters was extended to 3D-printed PLA, TPU, PA-GF, and PETG substrates having a much higher surface roughness. Additionally, a high aspect ratio of approx. 16:1 wall structure has been demonstrated by printing multiple metal lines on top of each other. While challenges persist, this study contributes to advancing additively manufactured electronic devices, highlighting the capabilities of StarJet metal jet-printing technology.

Isoporous block copolymer membranes are viewed as the next-generation separation membranes for their unique structures and urgent application in precise separation. However, an obvious weakness for such membranes is their poor solvent-resistance which limits their applications to aqueous solution, and isoporous membranes with superior solvent-resistance and tunable pore size have been rarely prepared before. Herein, self-supporting isoporous membranes with excellent solvent resistance are prepared by the facile yet robust hyper-crosslinking approach which is able to create a rigid network in whole membranes. The hyper-crosslinking is found to be a novel and non-destructive approach that does not change pore size and isoporous structure during the reaction, and the resulting hyper-crosslinked isoporous membranes display superior structural and separation stability to a broad range of solvents with varied polarities for months to years. More importantly, hyper-crosslinking has proved to be a universal strategy that is applicable to isoporous membranes with varied pore size and pore chemistry, offering an important opportunity to prepare solvent-resistant isoporous membranes with customizable pore size and pore functionality that are important to realize their accurate separations in organic solvents. The reversible formation and cleavage of disulfide bonds under physical/chemical stimuli make it a valuable motif in constructing dynamically cross-linked materials. In the present work, the block copolymer bearing pendent dithiolanes was synthesized and fabricated into isoporous membranes by the combination of self-assembly and nonsolvent-induced phase separation strategy. The cross-linking within the membrane was realized by the thiol-initiated ring-opening cascades of cyclic disulfides. Successful formation of disulfide bond networks within the isoporous membranes was proved by the Raman spectra, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and rheological analysis. The cross-linking in membranes was further demonstrated by the notably improved toughness and obviously enhanced swelling resistance to acid/alkaline solution as well as organic solvents. Importantly, the cross-linked isoporous membranes were fully dissolvable in solution containing dithiothreitol, which enabled the complete cleavage of disulfide bonds and successful recovery of the block copolymer that was able to be repeatedly fabricated into isoporous membranes with pore sizes identical to membranes prepared from the freshly synthesized copolymer. Our results indicate that dynamically cross-linked isoporous membranes with improved durability and good recyclability can be custom-made by simply incorporating active dithiolane moieties into self-assembling block copolymers.

Background: Glutamatergic dysfunction has been implicated in sensory integration deficits in schizophrenia, yet how glutamatergic function contributes to behavioural impairments and neural activities of sensory integration remains unknown., Methods: Fifty schizophrenia patients and 43 healthy controls completed behavioural assessments for sensory integration and underwent magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for measuring the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) glutamate levels. The correlation between glutamate levels and behavioural sensory integration deficits was examined in each group. A subsample of 20 pairs of patients and controls further completed an audiovisual sensory integration functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task. Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) activation and task-dependent functional connectivity (FC) were assessed based on fMRI data. Full factorial analyses were performed to examine the Group-by-Glutamate Level interaction effects on fMRI measurements (group differences in correlation between glutamate levels and fMRI measurements) and the correlation between glutamate levels and fMRI measurements within each group., Results: We found that schizophrenia patients exhibited impaired sensory integration which was positively correlated with ACC glutamate levels. Multimodal analyses showed significantly Group-by-Glutamate Level interaction effects on BOLD activation as well as task-dependent FC in a 'cortico-subcortical-cortical' network (including medial frontal gyrus, precuneus, ACC, middle cingulate gyrus, thalamus and caudate) with positive correlations in patients and negative in controls., Conclusions: Our findings indicate that ACC glutamate influences neural activities in a large-scale network during sensory integration, but the effects have opposite directionality between schizophrenia patients and healthy people. This implicates the crucial role of glutamatergic system in sensory integration processing in schizophrenia.

The disposal of blue algae (BA) and corn gluten (CG) wastes and the simultaneous recovery of abundant phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) by pyrolysis to obtain biochars with high fertility is a promising strategy. However, pyrolysis of BA or CG alone by a conventional reactor cannot reach the target. Herein, we propose a novel MgO-enhanced N and P recovery method by designing a two-zone staged pyrolysis reactor to highly efficiently recover N and P with easily available plant forms in BA and CG. The results show that a 94.58% total phosphorus (TP) retention rate was achieved by means of the special two-zone staged pyrolysis method, in which the effective P (Mg 2 PO 4 (OH) and R-NH-P) accounted for 52.9% of TP, while the total nitrogen (TN) reached 4.1 wt%. In this process, stable P was formed first at 400 °C to avoid rapid volatilization and then to form hydroxyl P at 800 °C. Meanwhile, Mg-BA char in the lower zone can efficiently absorb N-containing gas generated by the upper CG, forming dispersible N. Background: A few studies have reported the association between famine exposure during fetal development and risk of CVD, but no mechanisms have been explored., Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine risk of CVD in adulthood after exposure to famine during the fetal stage and explore the mediating role of systemic inflammation., Methods: A total of 59,416 participants of the Kailuan Study without CVD were included. All participants were divided into 3 groups based on date of birth, including the unexposed group (1963-1974), the fetal-exposed group (1959-1962), and the childhood-exposed group (1949-1958). Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) (neutrophils × platelets / lymphocytes) and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) (neutrophils × monocytes / lymphocytes) are 2 novel systemic inflammation indexes that represent the level of systemic inflammation. Time-weighted Cox regression was used to test the effect of famine exposure on risk of CVD, and a mediation model was used to calculate the role of systemic inflammation., Results: During a median follow-up period of 12.36 (12.69, 13.16) y, a total of 3772 cases of CVD were documented. Compared with unexposed participants, the fetal-exposed group had an increased risk of CVD (HR: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.38) and stroke (HR: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.51) but not MI. No association was observed in the childhood-exposed group. In mediation analysis, SII mediated an estimated 24.43% of the association between fetal exposure and CVD (24.61% for stroke and 23.27% for MI). For SIRI, this percentage was 30.20% for CVD (29.94% for stroke and 31.25% of MI)., Conclusions: Fetal exposure to famine may increase risk of CVD in adulthood. The Rh/BINAPa and ZSM-35(10) co-catalyzed tandem hydroformylation-acetalization of olefins has been developed. A series of olefins with various alcohols performed well in the process, affording the corresponding acetals with high regioselectivities (l/b ≥ 30.5) and excellent catalytic activities (TON of the Rh catalyst up to 4.3 × 10 4 ). Control experiments and DFT calculations indicated that the Rh/L11-catalyzed hydroformylation occurred in the solvent outside the molecular sieve, while the acetalization of intermediate aldehydes with alcohols takes place mainly in the interior of the molecular sieve.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the association between longitudinal change in non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) and subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk., Design: A retrospective study., Setting: Data were obtained from the Kailuan Study, a dynamic cohort study initiated in 2006 in Tangshan, China., Participants: The current study included 41 085 participants (mean age 53.9±11.6 years) free of CVD events in or before 2012. The non-HDL-C trajectory was developed according to the repeated measurement during 2006-2012 surveys to predict the CVD risk from 2012 to 2020., Primary Outcome Measures: CVD events included myocardial infarction and stroke., Results: 3 discrete non-HDL-C trajectories were identified: low-increasing (n=20 038), moderate-increasing (n=17 987) and high-increasing (n=3060). During 8 years of follow-up, 1797 CVD events were documented. Relative to the low-increasing pattern, adjusted HRs were 1.25 (95% CI: 1.13 to 1.38) for the moderate-increasing pattern and 1.46 (95% CI: 1.24 to 1.71) for the high-increasing pattern after adjustment for potential confounders such as age, sex, education background, smoking status, drinking status, physical activity, body mass index, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and lipid-lowering medications., Conclusions: Changes in non-HDL-C were significantly associated with subsequent risk of CVD events, and participants with a high-increasing pattern had a higher CVD risk. Background: Patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) have a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the possible mechanisms are not fully understood and further exploration of the possible factors influencing the high incidence of CVD in patients with MS is still needed., Objectives: This study aims to examine the association between fetal famine exposure and the risk of CVD in adulthood with MS., Methods: Of 13,744 MS patients free of CVD selected from the Kailuan Study in 2006 (referred as the baseline survey) were included in the study. China suffered a severe famine from 1959 to 1962, so the participants born during this period were classified as the uterine famine exposed group. All patients were born between January 1, 1949, and December 31, 1974. Based on the date of birth, all patients were divided into the no-exposed group (born between January 1, 1963, and December 31, 1974), uterine famine exposed group (born between January 1, 1959 and December 31, 1962), and childhood famine exposed group (born between January 1, 1949 and December 31, 1958). After following up to December 31, 2019, the weighted Cox regression analysis model was used to calculate the effect of early life famine exposure in MS individuals on the risk of CVD in adulthood., Results: During the 12.12 years of follow-up, the incidence of CVD was 5.87%, 10.13%, and 10.90% in the no-exposed group, uterine famine exposed group, and childhood famine exposed group, respectively. Compared with participants in the no-exposed group, the CVD risk and stroke risk increased in participants in the uterine famine exposed group (for CVD, HR: 1.32, 95% CI 1.04-1.67; for stroke, HR:1.37, 95% CI 1.05-1.79), but not in childhood famine exposed group. However, the increased CVD risks were only observed in females or smokers. No increased MI risks were observed for participants in the uterine famine exposed group or childhood famine exposed group., Conclusions: Our findings suggested that exposure to famine during uterine life might increase the risk of CVD in adulthood in participants with MS., (© 2022. Hubs in the brain network are the regions with high centrality and are crucial in the network communication and information integration. Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) exhibit wide range of abnormality in the hub regions and their connected functional connectivity (FC) at the whole-brain network level. Study of the hubs in the brain networks supporting complex social behavior (social brain network, SBN) would contribute to understand the social dysfunction in patients with SCZ. Forty-nine patients with SCZ and 27 healthy controls (HC) were recruited to undertake the resting-state magnetic resonance imaging scanning and completed a social network (SN) questionnaire. The resting-state SBN was constructed based on the automatic analysis results from the NeuroSynth. Our results showed that the left temporal lobe was the only hub of SBN, and its connected FCs strength was higher than the remaining FCs in both two groups. SCZ patients showed the lower association between the hub-connected FCs (compared to the FCs not connected to the hub regions) with the real-life SN characteristics. These results were replicated in another independent sample (30 SCZ and 28 HC). These preliminary findings suggested that the hub-connected FCs of SBN in SCZ patients exhibit the abnormality in predicting real-life SN characteristics., (© 2021. Accurately predicting the water quality of treated water from a water treatment plant (WWTP) based on the obtained operating database is of great significance. However, it is difficult for common mechanistic models to work well. In this study, a back propagation artificial neural network (BPANN) model with high accuracy was developed to predict the denitrification efficiency based on a 1-year operating database. Standardized principal component analysis (PCA) methods were used to address the data, and the PCA processed data exhibited the best accuracy. In three WWTPs adopting the anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A 2 O) process, the ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency of WWTPs was successfully predicted by using five variables: inlet flow rate, pH value, original ammonia nitrogen concentration, Chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration, and total phosphorus concentration. Importantly, the obtained BPANN model can be effectively used for other widely used treatment processes, such as oxidation ditch (OD), sequencing batch reactor activated sludge process (SBR), membrane bioreactor (MBR), and cyclic activated sludge technology (CAST), by simply optimizing the training data ratios between 50/50 and 90/10. This is the first trial to set up a universal model for predicting the denitrification efficiency of WWTPs adopting common biological processes. Empathy is the ability to generate emotional responses (i.e., cognitive empathy) and to make cognitive inferences (i.e., affective empathy) to other people's emotions. Empirical evidence suggests that patients with bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit impairment in cognitive empathy, but findings on affective empathy are inconsistent. Few studies have examined the neural mechanisms of cognitive and affective empathy in patients with BD. In this study, we examined the empathy-related resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in BD patients. Thirty-seven patients with BD and 42 healthy controls completed the self-report Questionnaires of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE), the Yoni behavioural task, and resting-sate fMRI brain scans. Group comparison of empathic ability was conducted. The interactions between group and empathic ability on seed-based whole brain rsFC were examined. BD patients scored lower on the Online Simulation subscale of the QCAE and showed positive correlations between cognitive empathy and the rsFC of the dorsal Medial Prefrontal Cortex (dmPFC) with the lingual gyrus. The correlations between cognitive empathy and the rsFC of the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) with the fusiform gyrus, the cerebellum and the parahippocampus were weaker in BD patients than that in healthy controls. Protein electrophoresis and immunoblotting are indispensable analytical tools for the characterization of proteins and posttranslational modifications in complex sample matrices. Owing to the lack of automation, commonly employed slab-gel systems suffer from high time demand, significant sample/antibody consumption, and limited reproducibility. To overcome these limitations, we developed a paper-based open microfluidic platform for electrophoretic protein separation and subsequent transfer to protein-binding membranes for immunoprobing. Electrophoresis microstructures were digitally printed into cellulose acetate membranes that provide mechanical stability while maintaining full accessibility of the microstructures for consecutive immunological analysis. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate separation of fluorescently labeled marker proteins in a wide molecular weight range (15-120 kDa) within only 15 min, reducing the time demand for the entire workflow (from sample preparation to immunoassay) to approximately one hour. Sample consumption was reduced 10- to 150-fold compared to slab-gel systems, owing to system miniaturization. Moreover, we successfully applied the paper-based approach to complex samples such as crude bacterial cell extracts. We envisage that this platform will find its use in protein analysis workflows for scarce and precious samples, providing a unique opportunity to extract profound immunological information from limited sample amounts in a fast fashion with minimal hands-on time., (© 2021 The Authors. Social behaviour requires the brain to efficiently integrate multiple social processes, but it is not clear what neural substrates underlie general social behaviour. While psychosis patients and individuals with subclinical symptoms are characterized by social dysfunction, the neural mechanisms underlying social dysfunctions in schizophrenia spectrum disorders remains unclear. We first constructed a general social brain network (SBN) using resting-state functional connectivity (FC) with regions of interest based on the automatic meta-analysis results from NeuroSynth. We then examined the general SBN and its relationship with social network (SN) characteristics in 30 individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ) and 33 individuals with social anhedonia (SA). We found that patients with SCZ exhibited deficits in their SN, while SA individuals did not. SCZ patients showed decreased segregation and functional connectivity in their SBN, while SA individuals showed a reversed pattern with increased segregation and functional connectivity of their SBN. Sparse canonical correlation analysis showed that both SCZ patients and SA individuals exhibited reduced correlation between SBN and SN characteristics compared with their corresponding healthy control groups. These preliminary findings suggest that both SCZ and SA participants exhibit abnormality in segregation and functional connectivity within the general SBN and reduced correlation with SN characteristics. Objective: The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the risk factors of malignant middle cerebral artery infarction (MMCAI) patients and explore an applicable prognostic predictor for MMCAI patients undergoing decompressive craniectomy (DC). Methods: Clinical data from the period 2012-2017 were retrospectively evaluated. Forty-three consecutive MMCAI patients undergoing DC were enrolled in this study. The 30-day mortality was assessed, and age, location, hypertension, pupil dilation, onset to operation duration, midline shift, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score were identified by univariate analysis and binary logistic regression. Results: In this retrospective study for DC patients, the 30-day mortality was 44.2%. In the univariate analysis, advanced age (≥60 years), right hemispheric location, hypertension, pupil dilation, shorter onset to operation duration (<48 h), improved midline shift ( t = 4.214, p < 0.01), and lower pre-operation GCS score were significant predictors of death within 30 days. In binary logistic regression analysis, age [odds ratio (OR) = 1.141, 95% CI 1.011-1.287], the improvement of the midline shift (OR = 0.764, 95% CI 0.59-0.988), and pupillary dilation (OR = 15.10, 95% CI 1.374-165.954) were independent influencing factors. For the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of the relationship between post-operation outcomes and midline shift improvement, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.844, and the cutoff point of midline shift improvement was 0.83 cm. Conclusion: Improved midline shift was a significant predictor of 30-day mortality. Background: Cornell assessment of pediatric delirium (CAPD) showed advantage in diagnosis of pediatric delirium in Chinese critically ill patients. But its performance in surgical patients is still unclear. The present study was designed to validate the diagnostic performance of CAPD in surgical pediatric patients., Methods: This is a prospective validation study. Pediatric patients who underwent selective surgery and general anesthesia were enrolled. Primary outcome was the incidence of delirium within postoperative three days. CAPD Chinese version was used to evaluate if the patient had delirium one time per day. At the meantime, a psychiatrist employed Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition to diagnose delirium, which was the "gold standard", and the result was considered as reference standard. Sensitivity, specificity and area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were calculated to investigate the performance of CAPD., Results: A total of 170 patients were enrolled. Median age was 4 years old. As diagnosed by psychiatrist, 23 (13.5 %) patients experienced at least one episode of delirium during the follow-up period. When diagnostic threshold was set at 9, CAPD showed the optimal sensitivity (87.0 %, 95 %CI 65.3 %-96.6 %) and specificity (98.0 %, 95 %CI 93.7 %-99.5 %) in comparison with other diagnostic thresholds. ROC analysis showed that CAPD was a good delirium assessment instrument with area under curve of 0.911 (95 % CI 0.812 to 1.000, P < 0.001). Background: Sorafenib is an oral multi-kinase inhibitor that was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, resistance to sorafenib is an urgent problem to be resolved to improve the therapeutic efficacy of sorafenib. As the activation of AKT/mTOR played a pivotal role in sorafenib resistance, we evaluated the effect of a dual mTOR complex 1/2 inhibitor Torin2 on overcoming the sorafenib resistance in HCC cells., Methods: The sorafenib-resistant Huh7 and Hep3B cell lines were established from their parental cell lines. The synergistic effect of sorafenib and Torin2 on these cells was measured by cell viability assay and quantified using the Chou-Talalay method. Apoptosis induced by the combination of sorafenib and Torin2 and the alteration in the specific signaling pathways of interest were detected by Western blotting., Results: Sorafenib treatment inversely inhibited AKT in parental but activated AKT in sorafenib-resistant Huh7 and Hep3B HCC cells, which underscores the significance of AKT activation. Torin2 and sorafenib synergistically suppressed the viability of sorafenib-resistant cells via apoptosis induction. Torin2 successfully suppressed the sorafenib-activated mTORC2-AKT axis, leading to the dephosphorylation of Ser136 in BAD protein, and increased the expression of total BAD, which contributed to the apoptosis in sorafenib-resistant HCC cells., Conclusions: In this study, Torin2 and sorafenib showed synergistic cytostatic capacity in sorafenib-resistant HCC cells, via the suppression of mTORC2-AKT-BAD pathway. Introduction: Alteration of empathy is common in patients with psychiatric disorders. Reliable and valid assessment tools for measuring empathy of clinical samples is needed. The Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy (QCAE) is a newly-developed instrument to capture cognitive and affective components of empathy. This study aimed to validate the QCAE and compared self-reported empathy between clinical groups with varied psychiatric diagnoses and healthy sample., Methods: The present study performed factor analysis for the QCAE on clinical samples in the Chinese setting (n = 534), including patients with schizophrenia (n = 158), bipolar disorder (n = 213) and major depressive disorder (n = 163). Internal consistency, internal correlation and convergent validity was examined in the subsample (n = 361). Group comparison among patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and healthy controls (n = 107) was conducted to assess the discriminant validity., Results: Our results indicated acceptable factor model, good reliability and validity of the QCAE. Impaired cognitive empathy was found in clinical samples, especially in patients with schizophrenia, while higher affective empathy was found in patients with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder., Conclusion: The QCAE is a useful tool in assessing empathy in patients with varied psychiatric diagnoses.

Background: Accurate diagnosis of delirium is very important for prevention and treatment. Present study was designed to validate the 3-Minute Diagnostic Interview for CAM-defined Delirium Chinese version (3D-CAM-CN) in surgical ICU patients., Methods: In this prospective diagnostic study, the 3D-CAM was translated into Chinese with culture adaption. Two interviewers (Roles A and B) independently administrated 3D-CAM-CN assessment in adult patients from postoperative days 1 to day 3. At the meantime, a panel of psychiatrists diagnosed delirium according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth edition as the reference standard. The sensitivity and specificity were calculated to analyze the diagnostic character of the 3D-CAM-CN. Kappa coefficient was used to evaluate interrater reliability., Results: Two hundred forty-five adult patients were assessed for at least 2 days, resulting a total of 647 paired-assessments. When compared with the reference standard, the sensitivity and specificity of the 3D-CAM-CN assessment were 87.2 and 96.7%, respectively, by Role A and 84.6 and 97.4%, respectively, by Role B, with good interrater reliability (Kappa coefficient = 0.82, P < 0.001). It also performed well in patients with mild cognitive impairment, with the sensitivity from 85.7 to 100% and the specificity from 95.7 to 96.4%., Conclusion: Our results showed that the 3D-CAM-CN can be used as a reliable and accurate instrument for delirium assessment in surgical patients., Trial Registration: This trail was approved by the Clinical Research Ethic Committee of Peking University First Hospital (No. 2017-1321) and registered on Chinese clinical trial registry on July 6, 2017 (ChiCTR-OOC-17011887).

The dominance of safener can unite with herbicides acquiring the efficient protection of crop and qualifying control of weeds in agricultural fields. In order to solve the crop toxicity problem and exploit the novel potential safener for fenoxaprop- P -ethyl herbicide, a series of trichloromethyl dichlorobenzene triazole derivatives were designed and synthesized by the principle of active subunit combination. A total of 21 novel substituted trichloromethyl dichlorobenzene triazole compounds were synthesized by substituted aminophenol and amino alcohol derivatives as the starting materials, using cyclization and acylation. All the compounds were unambiguously characterized by IR, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, and HRMS. A greenhouse bioassay indicated that most of the title compounds could protect wheat from injury caused by fenoxaprop- P -ethyl at varying degrees, in which compound 5o exhibited excellent safener activity at a concentration of 10 μmol/L and was superior to the commercialized compound fenchlorazole. A structure-activity relationship for the novel compounds was determined, which demonstrated that those compounds containing benzoxazine groups showed better activity than that of oxazole-substituted compounds. Introducing a benzoxazine fragment and electron-donating group to specific positions could improve or maintain the safener activity for wheat against attack by the herbicide fenoxaprop- P -ethyl. A molecular docking model suggested that a potential mechanism between 5o and fenoxaprop- P -ethyl is associated with the detoxication of the herbicide. Results from the present work revealed that compound 5o exhibited good crop safener activities toward wheat and could be a promising candidate structure for further research on wheat protection.

Background: Bright light therapy (BLT) is an effective treatment for seasonal affective disorder and non- seasonal depression. The efficacy of BLT in treating patients with bipolar disorder is still unknown., Aims: The aim of this study is to examine the efficacy, onset time and clinical safety of BLT in treating patients with acute bipolar depression as an adjunctive therapy (trial registration at ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02009371)., Methods: This was a multi-center, single blind, randomized clinical trial. Seventy-four participants were randomized in one of two treatment conditions: BLT and control (dim red light therapy, dRLT). Sixty-three participants completed the study (33 BLT, 30 dRLT). Light therapy lasted for two weeks, one hour every morning. All participants were required to complete several scales assessments at baseline, and at the end of weeks 1 and 2. The primary outcome measures were the clinical efficacy of BLT which was assessed by the reduction rate of HAMD-17 scores, and the onset time of BLT which was assessed by the reduction rate of QIDS-SR16 scores. The secondary outcome measures were rates of switch into hypomania or mania and adverse events., Results: 1) Clinical efficacy: BLT showed a greater ameliorative effect on bipolar depression than the control, with response rates of 78.19% vs. 43.33% respectively (p < 0.01). 2) Onset day: Median onset day was 4.33 days in BLT group. 3) BLT-emergent hypomania: No participants experienced symptoms of hypomania. 4) Side effects: No serious adverse events were reported., Conclusion: BLT can be considered as an effective and safe adjunctive treatment for patients with acute bipolar depression., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Many molecular epidemiological studies have been performed to explore the association between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and cancer risk in diverse populations. However, the results were inconsistent. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association between cancer risk and MTHFR C677T (150,086 cases and 200,699 controls from 446 studies) polymorphism. Overall, significantly increased cancer risk was found when all eligible studies were pooled into the meta-analysis. In the further stratified and sensitivity analyses, significantly increased breast cancer risk was found in Asians and Indians, significantly decreased colon cancer risk was found, significantly decreased colorectal cancer risk was found in male population, significantly increased gastric cancer risk was found in Caucasians and Asians, significantly increased hepatocellular cancer risk was found in Asians, significantly decreased adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (AALL) risk was found in Caucasians, significantly decreased childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (CALL) risk was found in Asians, and significantly increased multiple myeloma and NHL risk was found in Caucasians. In summary, this meta-analysis suggests that MTHFR C677T polymorphism is associated with increased breast cancer, gastric cancer, and hepatocellular cancer risk in Asians, is associated with increased gastric cancer, multiple myeloma, and NHL risk in Caucasians, is associated with decreased AALL risk in Caucasians, is associated with decreased CALL risk in Asians, is associated with increased breast cancer risk in Asians, is associated with decreased colon cancer risk, and is associated with decreased colorectal cancer risk in male population. Moreover, this meta-analysis also points out the importance of new studies, such as Asians of HNC, Asians of lung cancer, and Indians of breast cancer, because they had high heterogeneity in this meta-analysis (I(2) > 75%).

A strength of microfluidic chip laboratories is the rapid heat transfer that, in principle, enables a very homogeneous temperature distribution in chemical processes. In order to exploit this potential, we present an integrated chip system where the temperature is precisely controlled and monitored at the microfluidic channel level. This is realized by integration of a luminescent temperature sensor layer into the fluidic structure together with inkjet-printed micro heating elements. This allows steering of the temperature at the microchannel level and monitoring of the reaction progress simultaneously. A fabrication procedure is presented that allows for straightforward integration of thin polymer layers with optical sensing functionality in microchannels of glass-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chips of only 150 μm width and 29 μm height. Sensor layers consisting of polyacrylonitrile and a temperature-sensitive ruthenium tris-phenanthroline probe with film thicknesses of about 0.5 to 6 μm were generated by combining blade coating and abrasion techniques. Optimal coating procedures were developed and evaluated. The chip-integrated sensor layers were calibrated and investigated with respect to stability, reproducibility, and response times. These microchips allowed observation of temperature in a wide range with a signal change of around 1.6 % per K and a maximum resolution of around 0.07 K. The device is employed to study temperature-controlled continuous micro flow reactions. This is demonstrated exemplarily for the tryptic cleavage of coumarin-modified peptides via fluorescence detection.

Regular exercise has been known to have many benefits, for example, improving physical performance, promoting health and preventing chronic diseases such as metabolic diseases. As a very important organelles in eukaryotic cells, mitochondria exhibit superb plasticity in response to exercise. Exercise may promote mitochondrial biogenesis and eliminate the dysfunctional mitochondria via mitophagy in order to maintain the normal function of the mitochondrial network. These dynamic changes keep mitochondria in health state and ensure the energy supply for cells. This review summarized the studies on the regulation of mitochondrial quality control by exercise, and provided a reasonable explanation for exercise to promote health and prevent diseases.

As highly plastic tissue, skeletal muscle adapts to stressors such as exercise. Reasonable amount of exercise is known to play a role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer. However, in the field of Exercise Physiology, the debate has been on for a while as to which kind of exercise is more effective in health promotion. In this review, the authors contrast and compare the signaling pathways mediated by different types of exercise, and boldly speculate the intrinsic similarities and discrepancies among them, hoping to enrich the theoretical frames of exercise adaptation, as well as provide effective exercise regimen to the public.

Purpose: This systematic analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pemetrexed based salvage chemotherapy for treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer., Methods: Clinical studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of pemetrexed based regimens on response and safety for patients with colorectal cancer were identified using a predefined search strategy. Pooled response rates (RRs) were calculated., Results: For pemetrexed based regimens, 4 clinical studies including 201 patients with advanced colorectal cancer were considered eligible for inclusion. The analysis suggested that, in all patients, pooled RR was 20.4% (41/201). Major adverse effects were neutropenia, anorexia, fatigue, and anemia. No treatment related death occurred with pemetrexed based treatment., Conclusion: This systematic analysis suggests that pemetrexed based regimens are associated with mild activity with good tolerability in treating patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Articular cartilage is a thin complex tissue that covers the bony ends of joints. Changes in the composition and structure of articular cartilage will cause degeneration, which may further lead to osteoarthritis. Decreased stiffness is one of the earliest symptoms of cartilage degeneration and also represents the imperfect quality of repaired cartilage. An optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based air-jet indentation system was recently developed in our group to measure the mechanical properties of soft tissues. In this study, this system was applied to quantify the change of mechanical properties of articular cartilage after degeneration induced by enzymatic digestions. Forty osteochondral disks (n = 20 × 2) were prepared from bovine patellae and treated with collagenase and trypsin digestions, respectively. The apparent stiffness of the cartilage was measured by the OCT-based air-jet indentation system before and after the degeneration. The results were also compared with those from a rigid contact mechanical indentation and an ultrasound water-jet indentation. Through the air-jet indentation, it was found that the articular cartilage stiffness dropped significantly by 84% (p < 0.001) and 63% (p < 0.001) on average after collagenase and trypsin digestions, respectively. The stiffness measured by the air-jet indentation system was highly correlated (R > 0.8, p < 0.001) with that from the other two indentation methods. This study demonstrated that the OCT-based air-jet indentation can be a useful tool to quantitatively assess the mechanical properties of articular cartilage, and this encourages us to further develop a miniaturized probe suitable for arthroscopic applications.

Osteoarthritis (OA) produces degenerative changes both in articular cartilage and subchondral bone. During OA, reflection of high frequency ultrasound from the cartilage-bone interface is affected by both changes in attenuation of the cartilage layer and acoustic properties of the interface. The objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the spectral content of ultrasound reflection from the cartilage-bone interface. Specifically, we analyzed the center frequency and -6 dB bandwidth of the broadband high-frequency (40 MHz) ultrasound signal. Intact bovine articular cartilage samples with and without the underlying subchondral bone (n = 6) were measured in vitro using a commercial high-frequency ultrasound scanner. Furthermore, the diagnostic potential of the measurement of center frequency and bandwidth for OA was studied with another series of bovine articular cartilage samples (n = 40) after enzymatic degradations of tissue proteoglycans and collagen. Compared with the reference spectrum at the same depth from a perfect reflector, a major downshift (>51%) of the center frequency and a reduction (>42%) of the bandwidth were observed in both sample groups when analyzing the ultrasound reflection from the cartilage-bone interface. The results suggest that attenuation in the cartilage layer primarily controls the observed downshift of the center frequency and acoustic properties of the subchondral bone play only a minor role in affecting the spectrum of the cartilage-bone interface. Changes in the ultrasound bandwidth of the cartilage-bone interface signals, compared with reference signals, were found to vary more than those in the center frequency in both cartilage sample groups. Compared with pretreatment values, a significant downshift in center frequency (p < 0.01) and a minor reduction in bandwidth of spectra from the cartilage-bone interface were recorded after chemical degradation of proteoglycans with trypsin. In contrast, center frequency and bandwidth of the echoes from the cartilage-bone interface did not change after the chemical degradation of cartilage collagen fibrils. The results suggest that proteoglycan loss, typical to OA, may be detected via the changes in the center frequency of the ultrasound reflected from the cartilage-bone interface., (Copyright © 2011 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology. Background: It has been demonstrated that only a minority of patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis B (CHB) obtain a sustained response after either interferon (IFN) or nucleos(t)ide analogue monotherapy. Therefore, combination therapy of drugs with synergistic antiviral effects was proposed to have a sustained response in these patients. We compared the effect and safety of lamivudine monotherapy and its combination with IFN including conventional interferon (CON-IFN) and pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) for HBeAg-negative CHB patients., Data Sources: A group of three independent reviewers identified 9 eligible randomized controlled trials through electronic searches (MEDLINE, OVID, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library Clinical Trials Registry, and the Chinese Medical Database), manual searches, and contact with experts. Sustained virological and biochemical responses were defined as primary efficacy measures. We performed quantitative meta-analyses to assess differences between CON-IFN plus lamivudine combination and lamivudine monotherapy groups., Results: No greater sustained virological and biochemical rates were found in patients receiving CON-IFN/lamivudine combination therapy [29.1% vs. 26.7%, odds ratio (OR)=0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.65-1.50, P=0.94, and 41.8% vs. 40.3%, OR=1.13, 95% CI 0.78-1.65, P=0.51, respectively], though a reduced YMDD mutation rate was achieved in the combination group [8.39% vs. 30.0%, OR=0.16, 95% CI 0.076-0.33, P<0.001]. However, data from one PEG-IFN trial showed greater sustained virological and biochemical rates in patients receiving combination therapy [response rate 19.5% vs. 6.6%, OR=3.42, 95% CI 1.71-6.84, P<0.001 and 60.0% vs. 44.2%, OR=1.88, 95% CI 1.23-2.85, P=0.003, respectively]., Conclusions: Addition of CON-IFN to lamivudine did not improve treatment efficacy but suppressed YMDD mutation by lamivudine. Combination of PEG-IFN and lamivudine might increase the sustained response, and further clinical trials are needed for confirmation.

Space flight induces acute changes in normal physiology in response to the microgravity environment. Articular cartilage is subjected to high loads under a ground reaction force on Earth. The objectives of this study were to investigate the site dependence of morphological and ultrasonic parameters of articular cartilage and to examine the site-specific responses of articular cartilage to simulated microgravity using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). Six rats underwent tail suspension (simulated microgravity) for four weeks and six other rats were kept under normal Earth gravity as controls. Cartilage thickness, ultrasound roughness index (URI), integrated reflection coefficient (IRC) and integrated backscatter coefficient (IBC) of cartilage tissues, as well as histological degeneration were measured at the femoral head (FH), medial femoral condyle (MFC), lateral femoral condyle (LFC), patello-femoral groove (PFG) and patella (PAT). The results showed site dependence not significant in all UBM parameters except cartilage thickness (p < 0.01) in the control specimens. Only minor changes in articular cartilage were induced by 4-week tail suspension, although there were significant decreases in cartilage thickness at the MFC and PAT (p < 0.05) and a significant increase in URI at the PAT (p < 0.01). This study suggested that the 4-week simulated microgravity had only mild effects on femoral articular cartilage in the rat model. This information is useful for human spaceflight and clinical medicine in improving understanding of the effect of microgravity on articular cartilage. Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint diseases among adults, and its early detection is still not possible. In this study, high-frequency ultrasound and ultrasound-assisted mechanical testing systems were used to quantitatively measure the morphologic, acoustic and mechanical properties of normal and enzymatically degraded bovine articular cartilages in vitro. A total of 40 osteochondral cartilage plugs were prepared from 20 bovine patellae (n=20x2) and divided into two groups for collagenase and trypsin digestions, respectively. A high-frequency ultrasound system (center frequency: 40 MHz) was used to analyze the surface integrity (ultrasound roughness index, URI), thickness and acoustic properties of the articular cartilages before and after enzymatic degradations. Acoustic parameters included the integrated reflection coefficient (IRC) from the cartilage surface, reflection from the cartilage-bone interface (AIB(bone)), integrated attenuation (IA) and integrated backscatter (IBS) of the internal cartilage tissue. A newly developed ultrasound water jet indentation system was used to assess the mechanical properties of the cartilage samples. The results showed that the URI increased significantly (p<0.05) after collagenase digestion while no significant change (p>0.05) was found after trypsin digestion. With regard to acoustic parameters, the IRC decreased significantly (p<0.05) after collagenase digestion while no significant change (p>0.05) was found after trypsin digestion. The AIB(bone) demonstrated an insignificant change after collagenase digestion (p>0.05) but a significant decrease after trypsin digestion (p<0.05). Both enzymatic degradation groups showed insignificant differences (p>0.05) in the IA but a significant increase (p<0.05) in the IBS after both enzymatic degradations. The apparent stiffness measured by ultrasound water jet indentation suggested that articular cartilage from both groups became significantly softer (p<0.05) after the enzymatic degradations. A significant relationship was found to exist between the IRC and URI (p<0.05). This study showed that high-frequency ultrasound can be a comprehensive tool to quantitatively and systematically analyze the morphologic, acoustic and mechanical properties of articular cartilage in association with its degeneration., (Copyright 2010 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology. In this study, optical coherence tomography (OCT) with an axial resolution of 15 mum was used to investigate the depth and degeneration dependences of the refractive index (RI) of articular cartilage collected from bovine patellae in vitro. Eighteen disks of articular cartilage with a diameter of 6.35 mm harvested from different patellae were successfully prepared. Each disk was cut into two halves and three horizontal cartilage slices (n = 18 x 2 x 3) with an approximately equal thickness of 0.5 mm were further prepared from each half disk. The cartilage slices were digested by two different enzymes, collagenase and trypsin, to disturb collagen fibrils and proteoglycans, respectively. The samples were submerged in the physiological saline and tested using OCT before and after the enzyme digestion and the RI for each specimen was calculated. The RI of articular cartilage from the superficial to deep regions was 1.361 +/- 0.032 (mean +/- SD), 1.338 +/- 0.036, and 1.371 +/- 0.041 for normal specimens; 1.357 +/- 0.036, 1.331 +/- 0.030, and 1.392 +/- 0.037 for trypsin digested specimens; and 1.361 +/- 0.032, 1.336 +/- 0.048, and 1.376 +/- 0.043 for those treated by collagenase, respectively. Two-factor repeated measure ANOVA revealed that for all the three groups of specimens, the RI in different depths was significantly different (p < 0.05). However, we found that the trypsin and collagenase treatments did not exert a significant effect on the RI (p > 0.05). The results suggested that the depth dependence of articular cartilage should be taken into account when OCT is used for related measurement.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a promising new technique for characterizing the structural changes of articular cartilage in osteoarthritis (OA). The calculation of quantitative parameters from the OCT signal is an important step to develop OCT as an effective diagnostic technique. In this study, two novel parameters for the quantification of optical surface reflection and surface roughness from OCT measurements are introduced: optical surface reflection coefficient (ORC), describing the amount of a ratio of the optical reflection from cartilage surface with respect to that from a reference material, and OCT roughness index (ORI) indicating the smoothness of the cartilage surface. The sensitivity of ORC and ORI to detect changes in bovine articular cartilage samples after enzymatic degradations of collagen and proteoglycans using collagenase and trypsin enzymes, respectively, was tested in vitro. A significant decrease (p < 0.001) in ORC as well as a significant increase (p < 0.001) in ORI was observed after collagenase digestion. After trypsin digestion, no significant changes in ORC or ORI were observed. To conclude, the new parameters introduced were demonstrated to be feasible and sensitive to detect typical OA-like degenerative changes in the collagen network. From the clinical point of view, the quantification of OCT measurements is of great interest since OCT probes have been already miniaturized and applied in patient studies during arthroscopy or open knee surgery in vivo. Further studies are still necessary to demonstrate the clinical capability of the introduced parameters for naturally occurring early OA changes in the cartilage.

A novel noncontact indentation system with the combination of an air jet and optical coherence tomography (OCT) was presented in this paper for the quantitative measurement of the mechanical properties of soft tissues. The key idea of this method is to use a pressure-controlled air jet as an indenter to compress the soft tissue in a noncontact way and utilize the OCT signals to extract the deformation induced. This indentation system provides measurement and mapping of tissue elasticity for small specimens with high scanning speed. Experiments were performed on 27 silicone tissue-mimicking phantoms with different Young's moduli, which were also measured by uniaxial compression tests. The regression coefficient of the indentation force to the indentation depth (N mm(-1)) was used as an indicator of the stiffness of tissue under air jet indentation. Results showed that the stiffness coefficients measured by the current system correlated well with the corresponding Young's moduli obtained by conventional mechanical testing (r = 0.89, p < 0.001). Preliminary in vivo tests also showed that the change of soft tissue stiffness with and without the contraction of the underlying muscles in the hand could be differentiated by the current measurement. This system may have broad applications in tissue assessment and characterization where alterations of mechanical properties are involved, in particular with the potential of noncontact micro-indentation for tissues.

Measuring the depth and degeneration dependences of articular cartilage is important for the investigation of cartilage structure and the reason behind its degeneration. The cartilage slices were digested by two different enzymes, collagenase and trypsin, to remove collagen fibres and proteoglycans, respectively. The samples were tested using OCT before and after the enzyme digestion and the RI for each specimen was calculated. Two-factor repeated measure ANOVA showed that for all the three groups of specimens, the RI in different depths was significantly different (p0.05). However, it was revealed that the trypsin and collagenase treatments did not exert a significant effect on the RI (p0.05). The results suggested that the depth dependence of articular cartilage should be taken into account when OCT is used for related measurement.

Objective: To investigate the expression of HPA and HIF-1alpha in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and their relationship with cancer development, invasion and metastasis., Methods: The expression of HPA mRNA and HIF-1alpha protein in 23 mucosa specimens of incisal margin, 26 para-tumorous dysplastic tissues and 70 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma specimens were detected by in situ hybridization assay and immunohistochemical staining, respectively., Results: The positive expression of HPA mRNA and HIF-1alpha protein were significantly increased as the epithelial cells progressed into carcinoma (P < 0.05). The expression of HPA mRNA and HIF-1alpha protein in the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were significantly correlated with the invasion depth, lymph node metastasis and clinical staging (P < 0.05), while it was not correlated with the differentiation of tumors (P > 0.05). There was a close correlation between the expression of HPA mRNA and HIF-1alpha protein in the carcinoma tissues (P < 0.01)., Conclusion: The high expression of HPA mRNA and HIF-1alpha protein is correlated with carcinogenesis, progression, invasion and metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. There may be a positive cooperation between two of them in the carcinogenesis and development of esophageal carcinoma. The determination of HPA mRNA and HIF-1 alpha will be useful in predicting tumor biological behavior.

Objective: To explore the cause and the treatment of liver hydatidosis complicated by biliary fistula, to reduce or prevent the incidence of the complication., Methods: From 1982 to 2002, 1 666 patients with liver hydatidosis were treated surgically in our hospital, and a retrospective analysis was conducted in 13 from the cohort, who developed biliary fisltula after the surgeries., Results: The incidence of liver hydatidosis-associated biliary fistula was 0.78% (13/1666), and 8 (61.5%) out of such cases were due to the primary liver hydatidosis, 3 (15.38%) were caused by damage to the small accessory hepatic duct or parahepatic byliary duct, and 2 (7.69%) by the puncture of the needle., Conclusion: Biliary fistula often arises from liver hydatidosis itself, and can be partly attributed to erroneous operation on the part of the operators, and prevention of this complication, therefore, is possible through careful operation.
