Background: Genital tract infections are posing a series of public health challenges for women in both developed and developing countries. Microbial infections of the vagina can lead to serious medical complications such as preterm labor, amniotic fluid infection, premature rupture of the fetal membranes, and low birth weight of the neonate, leading to high perinatal morbidity and mortality. In Ethiopia, limited information is found on the burden, antimicrobial susceptibility profile and associated factors for aerobic vaginitis. Thus, this study was aimed to determine the burden of AV, antimicrobial susceptibility profile of aerobic bacterial isolates and associated factors among women attending Gondar town health facilities, northwest Ethiopia., Methods: A health facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 214 study participants from February 1 to May 31, 2019. For all consecutive women, demographic variables were collected using a structured questionnaire and two vaginal swabs for each were collected. The diagnosis of AV and BV was based on the composite score of Donders and Nugent criteria, respectively. All bacteria were isolated and characterized by conventional culture techniques. The antimicrobial susceptibility pattern was performed using the disc diffusion technique. Logistic regression, univariate and multivariate analysis were carried out. A p-value ≤ 0.05 at 95% CI was considered as statistically significant., Results: The overall prevalence of vulvovaginitis among women was 50%. The identified aetiologies of vulvovaginitis were bacterial vaginosis (35.5%), candidiasis (23.8%), aerobic vaginitis (22.9%) and trichomoniasis (3.3%). Aerobic bacteria, especially Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli , were predominantly isolated in the vaginal samples. The prevalence of the multidrug resistance rate was 38.98%. The isolated Gram positive bacteria were sensitive to antibiotics like vancomycin, cefoxitin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, and gentamicin, whereas the Gram negative bacteria isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and meropenem., Conclusion: The high burden of bacterial vaginosis and aerobic vaginitis was reported. Therefore, regular screening of women using microbiological diagnosis should be promoted. The common bacteria isolated were Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli . Additionally, antibiotics like vancomycin, cefoxitin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, gentamicin, and meropenem were shown to have good action against the majority of bacteria isolates., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest for this work., (© 2021 Yasin et al.)

Background: There are many reasons for mothers not receiving modern obstetric care, being dissatisfied by health care deliveries is one of the major factors. There are limited studies about maternal satisfaction with labor and delivery care services in Ethiopia and particularly in the study area. Therefore, the aim of this study was to better understand client satisfaction on existing labor and delivery care service and associated factors among mothers who gave birth in the University of Gondar Teaching Hospital, Ethiopia., Methods: This institution based cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar Referral Hospital. 593 mothers who gave birth between July and September 2016 were enrolled. Study participants were selected by systematic random sampling. A standardized, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Descriptive and summary statistics were performed. A linear regression model was fitted and variables having a P value of ≤0.05 in the multivariable model were considered statistically significant., Result: Overall, 31.3% of mothers were satisfied by the existing labor and delivery care. Living in rural areas (-2.9%; 95% CI: -5.75,-0.12) and the presence of a co-morbidity (-3.2%; 95%CI:-5.70, -0.72) were the factor which have a negative influence on maternal satisfaction. On the other hand, travel time to reach to the hospital (hours) (0.79%; 95% CI: 0.07, 1.52), birth by episiotomy or assisted vaginal delivery (6.3%; 95%CI: 1.56, 11.04), and receiving cost-free maternal health services (6.66%; 95%CI: 3.31, 10.01) were the factors that had positive influence., Conclusion: The level of satisfaction of laboring mothers with the labor and delivery care services was poor. Rural residency and chronic medical co-morbidity were negatively associated with level of satisfaction while travel time, mode of delivery, and payment free delivery service had a statistically significant positive influence on satisfaction., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Objective: Dual contraceptive is the use of male condom besides any modern contraceptive. It reduces parent to child transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections between partners. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of dual contraceptive use among HIV positive women at University of Gondar Hospital, North West Ethiopia., Result: The prevalence of dual contraceptive use was found to be 13.2% (95% CI 10.5, 16.0). Partner involvement in post-test counseling [AOR = 3.11 (95% CI = 1.74, 5.57)], open partner discussion on using dual contraceptive [AOR = 7.84, 95% CI (4.26, 14.42)], provision of counseling about dual contraception [AOR = 6.56, 95% CI (3.54, 12.18)], age 18-24 years [AOR = 4.79, 95% CI (1.72, 13.32)], age 25-34 years [AOR = 1.97, 95% CI (1.01, 3.85)] and being a housewife [AOR = 4.38, 95% CI (1.89, 10.16)] were significant factors associated with dual contraceptive use. The prevalence of dual contraceptive use was low. This shows, there is a need to in promote partner involvement in HIV testing and counseling by offering counseling session in a couple-basis. It is also necessary for programmers to routinely focus on provision of dual contraception for HIV-infected women and Integration of family planning into HIV care follow-up clinic need to be strengthened.

Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimate, one-third of pregnancies end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or induced abortion in the world. There are various reasons for a woman to seek induced abortion. However, limited information is available so far in the country and particularly in the study area. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to identify the determinants of induced abortion among clients coming for abortion care services at Bahirdar Felegehiwote referral hospital, Northwest Ethiopia., Methods: Institutional based unmatched case-control study was conducted from September to December 2014. Interview administered questioner was used to collect primary data. Enumeration and systematic random sampling (K = 3) method was used to select 175 cases and 350 controls. A binary logistic regression model was fitted to identify determinant factors. Odds ratio with 95% CI was computed to assess the strength and significance of the association., Result: All sampled cases and controls were actually interviewed. The likelihood of abortion was higher among non-married women [AOR: 18.23, 95% CI: 8.04, 41.32], students [AOR: 11.46, 95% CI: 6.29, 20.87], and women having a monthly income of less than 500 ETB [AOR: 11.46, 95% CI: 6.29, 20.87]. However, the likelihood of abortion was lower among women age greater than 24 years [AOR: 0.29, 95% CI: 0.11, 0.79] and who had the previous history of induced abortion [AOR: 0.31, 95% CI: 0.15, 0.65]., Conclusion: The study identified being non-married, student, women age less than 24 years, having the previous history of induced abortion, and low monthly income as an independent determinant of induced abortion. Interventions focused on the identified determinant factors are recommended.
