The number of metal-containing waste streams resulting from electronic end-of life products, metallurgical by-products, and mine tailings to name but a few, is increasing worldwide. In recent decades, the potential to exploit these waste streams as valuable secondary resources to meet the high demand of critical and economically important raw materials has become more prominent. In this review, fundamental principles of bio-based metal recovery technologies are discussed focusing on microbial metabolism-dependent and metabolism-independent mechanisms as sustainable alternatives to conventional chemical metal recovery methods. In contrast to previous reviews which have partially addressed this topic, a special focus will be given on how fundamental principles of bio-based recovery technologies can influence the selectivity and specificity of metal recovery. While conventional methods for metal recovery show benefits in terms of economic affordability, bio-based recovery technologies offer advantages in terms of efficiency and environmentally friendliness. Modifications and adaptations in the processes of biosorption, bioaccumulation and bioelectrochemical systems are highlighted, further emphasizing the application of metal-binding peptides and siderophores to increase selectivity in the recovery of metals. Single metal solutions or mixtures with a low complexity have been the focus of previous studies and reviews, but this does not reflect the nature of complex industrial effluents. Therefore, key challenges that arise when dealing with complex polymetallic solutions are addressed and the focus is set on optimizing bio-based technologies to recover metals efficiently and selectively from bio-leachates or liquid waste streams., Competing Interests: Authors AS and SS were employed by company K1-MET GmbH. This study focused on the economic feasibility of two potential industrial-scale bioleaching technologies for metal recovery from specific metallurgical by-products, mainly basic oxygen steelmaking dust (BOS-D) and goethite. The investigation compared two bioleaching scaling technology configurations, including an aerated bioreactor and an aerated and stirred bioreactor across different scenarios. Results indicated that bioleaching using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans proved financially viable for copper extraction from goethite, particularly when 5% and 10% pulp densities were used in the aerated bioreactor, and when 10% pulp density was used in the aerated and stirred bioreactor. Notably, a net present value (NPV) of $1,275,499k and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 65% for Cu recovery from goethite were achieved over 20-years after project started using the aerated and stirred bioreactor plant with a capital expenditure (CAPEX) of $119,816,550 and an operational expenditure (OPEX) of $5,896,580/year. It is expected that plant will start to make profit after one year of operation. Aerated and stirred bioreactor plant appeared more reliable alternative compared to the aerated bioreactor plant as the plant consists of 12 reactors which can allow better management and operation in small volume with multiple reactors. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) is the most widely used second-generation semiconductor material. However, a large amount of GaAs scrap is generated at various stages of the GaAs wafer production process. Volatile GaAs clusters are inevitably generated during the process of GaAs vacuum thermal decomposition, resulting in lower purity of the recovered arsenic and the loss of gallium. In this study, thermodynamic analysis and dynamics simulation were combined to discuss the possibility of separating GaAs clusters and arsenic from a microscopic perspective. A vacuum thermal decomposition-directional condensation recovery process for GaAs scrap was proposed. By properly adjusting the separation parameters such as heating temperature, holding time and raw material size, high purity of gallium (99.99%) and arsenic (99.5%) were directly recovered under a system pressure of 1 Pa, heating temperature of 1323 K, holding time of 3 h, and GaAs scrap size of 2.5 cm. GaAs clusters were also recovered in powder form. The problem of difficult separation of GaAs clusters from arsenic was effectively solved by this method, and the purity of recovered arsenic was greatly improved. No additives are required and no waste liquid or gas emission in the whole process. In emerging economies, a significant amount of secondary resources are recycled by the informal sector, which can seriously harm the environment. However, some previous studies of industry management policy design ignored geographical factors. This paper introduces Geographic Information Systems into an agent-based cross-regional recycling model, and employs lead-acid batteries as an example. The model quantitatively displays the evolution of recycling markets in 31 provinces in Mainland China. Results show that: (1) High subsidies can significantly increase the number of formal enterprises in the short term, but their effectiveness decreases when the proportion of government funds in subsidies is above 80% in the long run; (2) The number of illegal recycling enterprises increases by 294% in eight inland provinces (e.g., Ningxia, Xinjiang) when all funds are invested in supervision, but this number is quite small in subsidy policy scenarios; (3) In four eastern regions, including Beijing and Tianjin, the number of illegal recycling enterprises decreases by 84% if supervision is more favored than subsidy; (4) In the optimal case where spatiotemporal factors are considered in all 31 regions, illegal recycling enterprises and waste lead emissions can be reduced by 95.59% and 45.85% nationwide. Our proposed recycling model offers a detailed simulation of multiple regions and diverse stakeholders, and serves as a useful reference for targeted recovery policies. Recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) including palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), and ruthenium (Ru) from high-level radioactive liquid waste (HLLW) possesses enormous environmental and economic benefits. A non-contact photoreduction method was herein developed to selectively recover each PGM from HLLW. Soluble Pd(II), Rh(III), and Ru(III) ions were reduced to insoluble zero-valent metals and separated from simulated HLLW containing neodymium (Nd) as a representative for lanthanides, another main component in HLLW. Detailed investigation on the photoreduction of different PGMs revealed that Pd(II) could be reduced under 254- or 300-nm UV exposure using either ethanol or isopropanol as reductants. Only 300-nm UV light enabled the reduction of Rh(III) in the presence of ethanol or isopropanol. Ru(III) was the most difficult to reduce, which was only realized by 300-nm UV illumination in isopropanol solution. The effects of pH was also studied, suggesting that lower pH favored the separation of Rh(III) but hindered the reduction of Pd(II) and Ru(III). A delicate three-step process was accordingly designed to achieve the selective recovery of each PGM from simulated HLLW. Pd(II) was reduced by 254-nm UV light with the help of ethanol in the first step. Then Rh(III) was reduced by 300-UV light in the second step after the pH was adjusted to 0.5 to suppress the Ru(III) reduction. In the third step, Ru(III) was reduced by 300-nm UV light after isopropanol was added and the pH was adjusted to 3.2. The separation ratios of Pd, Rh, and Ru exceeded 99.8%, 99.9%, and 90.0%, respectively. Meanwhile, all Nd(III) still remained in the simulated HLLW. The separation coefficients between Pd/Rh and Rh/Ru exceeded 56,000 and 75,000, respectively. In recent two decades, ultrasound has been broadly applied to the hydrometallurgical leaching process to recover valuable metals within raw materials, aiming to solve the shortcomings of the conventional leaching process, including relatively low leaching recovery, long leaching duration, high reagent usage, high energy consumption and so on. The present work focuses on a comprehensive overview of the ultrasound-enhanced leaching of various metals, such as common nonferrous and ferrous metals, rare metals, rare earth elements, and precious metals, from raw metal ores and secondary resources. Moreover, the enhanced leaching mechanisms by ultrasound are discussed in detail and summarized based on the improvement of leaching kinetics, enhancement of the mass transfer and diffusion of lixiviants, and promotion of the oxidative conversion of metals from insoluble to soluble states. The exploitation and utilization of secondary resources have the social benefits of saving resources, reducing pollution, and reducing production costs. Currently, less than 20% of titanium secondary resources can be recycled, and there are few reviews on titanium secondary resources recovery, which cannot fully reveal the technical information and progress of titanium secondary resources recovery. This work presents the current global distribution of titanium resources and market supply and demand, then focuses on an overview of technical studies on titanium extraction from different titanium-bearing secondary slags. The following types of titanium secondary resources are mainly available: sponge titanium production, the production of titanium ingot, titanium dioxide production, red mud, titanium-bearing blast furnace slag, spent SCR catalyst, and lithium titanate waste. The various methods of secondary resource recovery are compared, including the advantages and disadvantages, and the future development direction of the titanium recycling process is pointed out. On the one hand, recycling companies can classify and recover each type of residual waste according to its characteristics. On the other hand, solvent extraction technology can be the direction of attention due to the increased requirement for the purity of recovered materials. The increasing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) for modern industry has led to a surge in mining activities and consequently has released these metals into the environment. Intensifying REEs in a habitat has impacts on its ecosystem, but on the other side, it also provides the opportunity to recover REEs from low-grade minerals. Phytomining has emerged as an ecologically sound technique to extract these valuable elements from contaminated soils where traditional mining is not competitive. This paper presents and reviews the concept of REE phytomining from three scientific areas. The accumulation of rare earth metals in plants is the first stage, referred to as the phytoextraction process. This is followed by elevating REE concentrations into bio-ores via the enrichment phase. The enormous amount of spent catalysts generated worldwide may pose a risk to the environment because of their high load of metals, including vanadium. The latter may be mobilized and released to the environment if managed improperly. Moreover, the catalysts could be considered as secondary resources rather than waste. This study aimed at the efficient extraction of vanadium from spent desulfurization catalyst (SDC) from a sulfuric acid production plant. The raw SDC and the post-extraction residues were characterized in terms of their chemical and phase composition. The metal mobility from the materials was examined with both single-step and multi-step extractions. The environmental risk assessment was performed using sequential extraction. The study revealed that both tested methods (citric acid leaching and bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) enable the extraction of nearly 96% of V from SDC with a simultaneous reduction of metal mobility. However, the bacterial treatment was found more suitable. The leached residue was mostly (> 90%) composed of SiO 2 , which makes it a potential candidate for application in construction (e.g., concrete mixtures) after additional examinations. This research investigated the treatment process of an Iranian zinc plant residue for recycling lead utilizing brine leaching and cementation with aluminum powder. Response surface modeling was employed for this purpose and accordingly, two quadratic mathematical models with R 2 of 0.9058 and 0.9463 were identified for relationship between process parameters. The ANOVA and 3D response surface graphs exhibited that the leaching and cementation processes were significantly depended on the interactive effects between influential parameters. The interaction effects of liquid/solid ratio with NaCl concentration, temperature and stirring rate, and quadratic effect of NaCl concentration had the largest impact on the recovery. It was also distinguished that the most impressive parameters on the cementation performance were the linear effect of Al:Pb molar ratio, cementation time and temperature, and the quadratic impact of agitation rate. Additionally, numerical optimization was carried out by desirability function approach and the maximum leaching recovery of lead (77.14%) was achieved at 400 g/L NaCl concentration, 10 mL/g liquid/solid ratio, 300 rpm stirring speed, 50 °C temperature, and 60-min leaching time. Also, the highest cementation efficiency (74.97%) was determined after 75 min at 1.5 Al:Pb molar (stoichiometry) ratio, ~ 420 rpm agitation rate, and 50 °C temperature. The recycling of secondary resources is complicated as consumers, recyclers and governments are all involved in this process. In developing countries, compared to legal recyclers, illegal recyclers not only have cost advantages but also create serious pollution. Inappropriate management policies may cause disorder in the recycling market or inefficient fiscal management. This paper takes China's lead-acid batteries (LABs) from 2000 to 2015 as an example to construct a model of a secondary resource recovery system based on heterogeneous groups and analyzes the environmental and economic impacts of used LAB recycling. By simulating the implementation of different tax cuts, subsidies and regulatory policies by the government in each year, we observe the overall environmental impact of the recycling industry. This study finds that when the total amount of government expenditures is limited, the optimal policy combination emphasizes tax reduction and subsidy policies during the growth period of the recycling industry and uses more funds for supervision in the mature period. Under the balance of fiscal revenues and expenditures, the optimal policy combination can reduce the number of illegal recycling companies and waste lead emissions from the recycling market by 97.9% and 45.8%, respectively. Compared to research conducted using mathematical models and system dynamics models, this result is more in line with the actual situation, and the content is more intuitive. The separation of gallium from iron by solvent extraction from chloride media is challenging because the anionic chloridometalates, FeCl 4 - and GaCl 4 - , display similar chemical properties. However, we report here that the selective separation of gallium from iron in HCl solution can be achieved using the dual-purpose ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium iodide in a solvent extraction process. In this case, the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ by the iodide counterion was found to inhibit Fe transport, facilitating quantitative Ga extraction by the ionic liquid with minimal Fe extraction from 2 M HCl.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a widespread tool used to guide decision-makers towards optimal strategic choices for sustainable growth. A key aspect of LCA studies of waste management systems where recycling activities are present is to account for resource recovery and the related substitution effects. Although multiple scientific papers assume a 1:1 substitution ratio between similar materials/products, this is often incorrect as the actual ratio is likely to vary. The focus of this paper is on the calculation of the substitutability coefficient for secondary materials based on technical characteristics. A state of the art literature review showed that many different calculation procedures were applied, which led to a wide variety of substitutability coefficients (sometimes provided under different terminology). In this perspective, the objective of this paper is to provide guidelines on the procedure to be followed to calculate the substitutability coefficient for secondary materials, based on technical characteristics. These guidelines are then applied to two waste management case studies, one dealing with bottom ashes from incineration and the other with plastic waste. In total, sixteen technical substitutability coefficients are given for ten secondary materials, based on state of the art and presented case studies. The paper thus represents a step forward in quantifying the substitutability of secondary materials in waste management LCA studies. The thermal degradation behaviors and evolved products analysis of polyester paint and waste enameled wires during pyrolysis were studied. Thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) analyses were performed to investigate the mass loss characteristics. The pyrolysis solid residues generated during the process under optimal condition were detailedly analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Meanwhile, the pyrolysis gas and oil generated were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Kinetic analysis adopted the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall (OFW) model to confirm the reaction series by the variation pattern of activation energy. The results indicated that the pyrolysis of polyester paint and waste polyester enameled wires can be divided into three stages. The average activation energy of polyester paint and waste polyester enameled wires pyrolysis was 323.34 kJ/mol and 215.95 kJ/mol, respectively. The optimized pyrolysis temperature for polyester paint and waste polyester enameled wires was 500 °C and 900 °C, respectively. The chemical compositions of the pyrolysis residues of polyester paint and waste polyester enameled wires were basically same, mainly containing the compounds with CH, CO, aromatic ring, methyl, and aromatics bonds. The pyrolysis gas of polyester paint was mainly composed of C 2 H 6 , while that of waste polyester enameled wires mainly consisted of C 2 H 6 and C 4 H 8 O. This study investigates the potential for Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to detect buried glass 'hotspots' in a glass waste dump based on results from an open glass dump investigated initially. This detection potential is vital for excavation and later use of buried materials as secondary resources. After ERT, test pits (TPs) were excavated around suspected glass hotspots and physico-chemical characterisation of the materials was done. Hotspots were successfully identified as regions of high resistivity (>8000 Ωm) and were thus confirmed by TPs which indicated mean glass composition of 87.2% among samples (up to 99% in some). However, high discrepancies in material resistivities increased the risk for introduction of artefacts, thus increasing the degree of uncertainty with depth, whereas similarities in resistivity between granite bedrock and crystal glass presented data misinterpretation risks. Nevertheless, suitable survey design, careful field procedures and caution exercised by basing data interpretations primarily on TP excavation observations generated good results particularly for near-surface materials, which is useful since glass waste dumps are inherently shallow. Background: Fly ashes from municipal solid waste incineration contain significant amounts of (technology critical) elements. Processes to recover Cu or Zn are already in practice, but it still remains difficult to evaluate the full secondary resource potential of the ashes. One reason is the absence of a worldwide comparable analytical basis for detailed market analyses. To encounter this, (i) an advice on how to analyse 65 elements after microwave-assisted digestion by ICP-OES and ICP-MS is delivered, (ii) the heterogeneity (hours to annual cycle) is evaluated for a incineration plant, (iii) leaching efficiency with three different eluents and (iv) the market potential of the elements as commodities are evaluated., Results and Conclusions: Aqua regia digestion was found to be sufficient to evaluated the recovery potential; except for the mass constituents Al, Si, Sn, Ti and the trace components Cr, Hf, Nb, U and W, for which HF-containing digestions delivered better recoveries. On different time scales, ashes were very homogenous and HCl- as well as H 2 SO 4 -supported leaching delivered, satisfying results within an hour (exceptions are, e.g., Bi and Sb). In July 2018, the National Guideline Clearinghouse lost funding, leaving fewer freely available online guideline collections. Based on the authors' experience of the 3 major guideline-focused databases that are currently available (Guidelines International Network, the Turning Research into Practice database, and Guideline Central) an easy to use resource with stringent inclusion criteria is currently lacking, though new resources are in development. These 3 resources vary in scope, and none stood out as an all-encompassing favorite. Regardless of the source used to find and access guidelines, clinicians must evaluate guideline quality and currency before using them in clinical practice.

Solid metalliferous wastes (sludges, dusts, residues, slags, red mud and tailing wastes) originating from ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical industries are a serious environmental threat, when waste management practices are not properly followed. Metalliferous wastes generated by metallurgical industries are promising resources for biotechnological extraction of metals. These wastes still contain significant amounts of valuable non-ferrous metals, sometimes precious metals and also rare earth elements. Elemental composition and mineralogy of the metallurgical wastes is dependent on the nature of mining site and composition of primary ores mined. Most of the metalliferous wastes are oxidized in nature and contain less/no reduced sulfidic minerals (which can be quite well processed by biohydrometallurgy). However, application of biohydrometallurgy is more challenging while extracting metals from metallurgical wastes that contain oxide minerals. In this review, origin, elemental composition and mineralogy of the metallurgical solid wastes are presented. Phosphorus (P) is a vital macronutrient required to improve the agricultural yields but its excessive use as a fertilizer has resulted in pollution of water bodies leading to eutrophication. With no reserves of phosphorus source in Spain, increased dependence on phosphorus in agriculture have not only increased dependence on imports but also has raised concerns on its future availability as a resource. A Phosphorous Flow Analysis (PFA) was conducted for Spain for the year 2012 focusing on the food production and consumption systems. The results obtained were finally compared with PFA at both country level and continent level (EU-27). To quantify food and non-food flows systems, country specific data were considered. The sectors covered were crop production (CP), animal production (AP), food processing (FP), non-food production (NF) and consumption (HC). The findings reveal that a total of 325kt P was imported by Spain in 2012; 66% of which was accumulated in markets stock of food and feed, fertilizers and non-food (91kt P) while 33% was lost to the environment through land-fill, losses to water bodies, land accumulation and incineration. The largest proportion of losses is associated with water bodies (44.7kt P) followed by agriculture and land accumulation (42.1kt P). Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) received around 79.5kt P within wastewater, with 60% being removed in sewage sludge. The 31.7kt P discharged within final effluent represented the 71% of the total losses to water bodies. Around 69% of the sewage sludge was recycled to agriculture and 27% was sent directly to landfill including the ashes from incineration. Recycling of metals extends the efficient use of minerals and metals, reduces pressure on environment and results in major energy savings in comparison to primary production. In developing economies recycling had been an integral part of industrial activity and has become a major concern due to the handling of potentially hazardous material without any regard to the occupational health and safety (OH&S) needs. With rising awareness and interest from policy makers, the recycling scenario is changing and the large scale enterprises are entering the recycling sector. There is widespread expectation that these enterprises would use the Best Available Technologies (BAT) leading to better environment management and enhanced resource recovery. The major challenge is to enhance and integrate the activities of other stakeholders in the value chain to make recycling an economically viable and profitable enterprise. This paper is an attempt to propose a sustainable model for recycling in the developing economies through integration of the informal and formal sectors. The main objective is to augment the existing practices using a scientific approach and providing better technology without causing an economic imbalance to the present practices.
