Background: A rigorous learning needs assessment (LNA) is a crucial initial step in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) process. This scoping review aimed to collate, summarize, and categorize the reported LNA approaches adopted to inform healthcare professional CPD and highlight the gaps for further research., Method: In August 2020, nine bibliographic databases were searched for studies conducted with any health professional grouping, reporting the utilized LNA to inform CPD activities. Two reviewers independently screened the articles for eligibility and charted the data. A descriptive analytical approach was employed to collate, summarize, and categorize the literature., Results: 151 studies were included in the review; the majority adopted quantitative methods in the form of self-assessment surveys. Mixed-methods approaches were reported in only 35 studies. Descriptions of LNA development lacked detail of measures taken to enhance their rigor or robustness., Discussion: These findings do not reflect recommendations offered by the CPD literature. Further investigations are required to evaluate more recently advocated LNA approaches and add to their limited evidence-base. Similarly, the existing support afforded to CPD developers warrants further study in order to identify the necessary resource, infrastructure and expertise essential to design and deliver effective CPD programs.

Background: Nurses have a continuous presence and crucial role in response to disasters. During disasters, nurses apply specific knowledge and skills to minimize victims' health and life-threatening risks. Nurses' roles in crisis are not clearly stated in resources. Thus, this study aimed to explore nurses' role in the nursing disaster model., Methods: A scoping review was conducted using Joanna Briggs Institute framework. The review considered primary research and reviewed literature from following databases, including Web of Science, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, as well as the reference lists of articles identified for full-text review. Eligibility criteria were outlined as a priori to guide the literature selection., Results: Eight of 60 eligible articles met the inclusion criteria. The studies were conducted in different countries with no limit of time of published articles. The publications' design were three systematic reviews, one meta-synthesis, two qualitative types of research, one quasi-experimental, and one case study. The results showed nurses' roles in the three stages before, during, and after the crisis., Conclusion: This review provided a comprehensive understanding of the concept of the nursing role in the crisis, and nurses could be useful to save victims through preparing and implementing effective care at different stages of a crisis., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest The authors declare that there is no conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Firouzkouhi et al. Patient attachment styles may inform how patients react differently to the stress of being diagnosed with cancer, as well as how patients may desire to interact and be supported by their provider. The objectives of this study were two-fold: 1) to conduct a systematic scoping review to clarify how attachment theory is utilized and applied within the current body of research on the patient-provider relationship within cancer care, and 2) add to the existing body of literature by introducing an integrated model of patient attachment styles and patient-provider relationships for use in clinical and scholarly work. A systematic search of multiple databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, PsychInfo, and WorldCat was conducted using variations and combinations of keywords related to patient-provider relationship, attachment style, and cancer. The nine studies included in the review were published from 2011 to 2019. The majority of studies had participant samples with multiple cancer diagnoses (n = 5) and examined attachment as an independent or predictor variable (n = 6). Results suggest that a secure attachment was predictive of a better working alliance, more perceived support, less general distress, higher levels of trust and satisfaction with healthcare providers when compared to patients with an insecure attachment style. Data from the current review suggest that using an attachment theory framework can improve the understanding of the patient-provider relationship. We propose a conceptual model that aligns patient attachment style and patient-provider relationship types to be utilized in clinical practice in future research to tailor patient-centered cancer care., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd.
