Background/objectives: Oncoplastic reconstruction (IOR) performed in conjunction with breast conserving therapy (BCT) has been found to improve psychosocial well-being, reduce hospitalization time, and reduce cost burden. Few studies have looked at the safety profile, complication rates, and overall outcomes in patients ages 65 years and older undergoing IOR versus BCT alone., Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, single-institution medical record review was conducted of women diagnosed with breast cancer age 65 years or older who received IOR or BCT alone. Demographics, clinical data, and major and minor complication profiles were compared between cohorts., Results: A total of 310 patients were included. Of these, 126 received IOR, while 184 received BCT alone. Age >85 was found to have a significantly higher risk for any complication and was an independent predictor for experiencing any complication (OR: 8.5, p = 0.015; OR: 1.06, p = 0.029). Major complication rates were significantly higher in the BCT cohort (16.9% vs. 7.9%, p = 0.023)., Conclusion: IOR in the elderly is a safe option and was not found to be a predictor of experiencing higher complications. Patients who are 85 years and older had a higher risk of complications, and future studies may explore risk-benefit in that particular cohort of patients in which BCT is planned., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Arctic and alpine tundra ecosystems are large reservoirs of organic carbon 1,2 . Climate warming may stimulate ecosystem respiration and release carbon into the atmosphere 3,4 . The magnitude and persistency of this stimulation and the environmental mechanisms that drive its variation remain uncertain 5-7 . This hampers the accuracy of global land carbon-climate feedback projections 7,8 . Here we synthesize 136 datasets from 56 open-top chamber in situ warming experiments located at 28 arctic and alpine tundra sites which have been running for less than 1 year up to 25 years. We show that a mean rise of 1.4 °C [confidence interval (CI) 0.9-2.0 °C] in air and 0.4 °C [CI 0.2-0.7 °C] in soil temperature results in an increase in growing season ecosystem respiration by 30% [CI 22-38%] (n = 136). Our findings indicate that the stimulation of ecosystem respiration was due to increases in both plant-related and microbial respiration (n = 9) and continued for at least 25 years (n = 136). The magnitude of the warming effects on respiration was driven by variation in warming-induced changes in local soil conditions, that is, changes in total nitrogen concentration and pH and by context-dependent spatial variation in these conditions, in particular total nitrogen concentration and the carbon:nitrogen ratio. Tundra sites with stronger nitrogen limitations and sites in which warming had stimulated plant and microbial nutrient turnover seemed particularly sensitive in their respiration response to warming. Plant roots influence many ecological and biogeochemical processes, such as carbon, water and nutrient cycling. Because of difficult accessibility, knowledge on plant root growth dynamics in field conditions, however, is fragmentary at best. Minirhizotrons, i.e. transparent tubes placed in the substrate into which specialized cameras or circular scanners are inserted, facilitate the capture of high-resolution images of root dynamics at the soil-tube interface with little to no disturbance after the initial installation. Their use, especially in field studies with multiple species and heterogeneous substrates, though, is limited by the amount of work that subsequent manual tracing of roots in the images requires. Furthermore, the reproducibility and objectivity of manual root detection is questionable. Here, we use a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for the automatic detection of roots in minirhizotron images and compare the performance of our RootDetector with human analysts with different levels of expertise. Our minirhizotron data come from various wetlands on organic soils, i.e. highly heterogeneous substrates consisting of dead plant material, often times mainly roots, in various degrees of decomposition. This may be seen as one of the most challenging soil types for root segmentation in minirhizotron images. RootDetector showed a high capability to correctly segment root pixels in minirhizotron images from field observations (F1 = 0.6044; r 2 compared to a human expert = 0.99). Reproducibility among humans, however, depended strongly on expertise level, with novices showing drastic variation among individual analysts and annotating on average more than 13-times higher root length/cm 2 per image compared to expert analysts. CNNs such as RootDetector provide a reliable and efficient method for the detection of roots and root length in minirhizotron images even from challenging field conditions. Background and Aims: Forest peatlands represent 25 % of global peatlands and store large amounts of carbon (C) as peat. Traditionally they have been drained in order to increase forestry yield, which may cause large losses of C from the peat. Rewetting aims to stop these losses and to restore the initial storage function of the peatlands. As roots represent major peat-forming elements in these systems, we sampled roots with diameter <5 mm in a drained and a rewetted forest peatland in north-east Germany to evaluate differences in tree biomass investments below ground, root functional characteristics and root age., Methods: We cored soil next to Alnus glutinosa stems and sorted root biomass into <1, 1-2 and 2-5 mm diameter classes. We measured biomass distribution and specific root area (SRA) in 10-cm depth increments down to 50 cm, and estimated root age from annual growth rings., Key Results: Root biomass in the rewetted site was more than double that in the drained site. This difference was mostly driven by very fine roots <1 mm, which accounted for 51 % of the total root biomass and were mostly (75 %) located in the upper 20 cm. For roots <1 mm, SRA did not differ between the sites. However, SRA of the 1-2 mm and 2-5 mm diameter roots was higher in the drained than in the rewetted site. Root age did not differ between sites., Conclusions: The size-dependent opposite patterns between root biomass and their functional characteristics under contrasting water regimes indicate differences between fine and coarse roots in their response to environmental changes. Root age distribution points to similar root turnover rates between the sites, while higher root biomass in the rewetted site clearly indicates larger tree C stocks below ground under rewetting, supporting the C sink function of the ecosystem., (© The Author(s) 2020. Unbiased gold nanoparticles are negatively charged in aqueous solution but not hydrated. Optical spectroscopy of voltage-clamped single gold nanoparticles reveals evidence that anion adsorption starts at positive potentials above the point of zero charge, causing severe but reversible plasmon damping in combination with a spectral red shift exceeding the linear double layer charging effect. Plasmon damping by adsorbate is relevant for the use of nanoparticles in catalysis, in biodiagnostics, and in surface enhanced Raman scattering., (© 2012 American Chemical Society)

We demonstrate an ultrafast manipulation of the Rabi splitting energy Ω(R) in a metal-molecular aggregate hybrid nanostructure. Femtosecond excitation drastically alters the optical properties of a model system formed by coating a gold nanoslit array with a thin J-aggregated dye layer. Controlled and reversible transient switching from strong (Ω(R) ≃ 55 meV) to weak (Ω(R) ≈ 0) coupling on a sub-ps time scale is directly evidenced by mapping the nonequilibrium dispersion relations of the coupled excitations. Such a strong, externally controllable coupling of excitons and surface plasmon polaritons is of considerable interest for ultrafast all-optical switching applications in nanoscale plasmonic circuits.

The studies on synthetic, spectroscopic and biological properties of platinum(IV) complexes, [PtCl(4)(R(2)eddp)] (R = Et, 1; n-Pr, 2), containing kappa(2)N,N' bidentate ligands, esters of ethylenediamine-N,N'-di-3-propionic acid (HOOCCH(2)CH(2)NHCH(2)CH(2)NHCH(2)CH(2)COOH, H(2)eddp), are reported. Complexes have been characterized by infrared, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis and it was concluded that the coordination of the ligands occurs via nitrogen donor atoms of the ester ligands (R(2)eddp). Cytotoxicity studies were performed for ligand precursors and corresponding platinum(IV) complexes. Although the n-Pr(2)eddp.2HCl itself showed no activity (IC(50) values > 125 microM) in selected cell lines, the activity of complex 2, via apoptotic mode of cell death, has increased significantly for a broad range of cancer cell lines tested in vitro (IC(50) = 8.6-49 microM). As it was found that complexes 1 and 2 are able to interact with pBR322 plasmid DNA, platinum(IV) complexes of this type may act as drugs and pro-drugs.

Introduction: Intramedullary nailing is the treatment of choice for most displaced tibial shaft fractures. The ability to maintain a mechanically stable fixation becomes more difficult the further the fracture extends distally or proximally or when unreamed tibial nails are used. We assumed that a new angular stable locking option would provide improved stability and reduced interfragmentary movements in a distal tibia in vitro fracture model., Materials and Methods: Left and right bones of 8 pairs of human cadaveric tibiae were randomly assigned to either a group with conventional locked or a group with angular stable locked intramedullary nails. Nails of 10-mm-diameter were used after reaming up to 11 mm. A transverse distal osteotomy was performed and the specimens were tested mechanically under eccentric axial load. A video optical measurement system was used to determine the angular displacement of the osteotomy gap during loading., Results: Construct stiffness, maximum load of the bone-nail construct and gap angle at 0.5 kN load were measured. The group with the angular stable locking option showed significantly higher stiffness values and reduced fracture gap motion compared to the group with conventional locked nails., Discussion: A new angular stable locking option of intramedullary nails provides higher stability in terms of construct stiffness and reduced interfragmentary movements in a distal tibia in vitro fracture model.

We report measurements of a coherent coupling between surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and quantum well excitons in a hybrid metal-semiconductor nanostructure. The hybrid structure is designed to optimize the radiative exciton-SPP interaction which is probed by low-temperature, angle-resolved, far-field reflectivity spectroscopy. As a result of the coupling, a significant shift of approximately 7 meV and an increase in broadening by approximately 4 meV of the quantum well exciton resonance are observed. The experiments are corroborated by a phenomenological coupled-oscillator model predicting coupling strengths as large as 50 meV in structures with optimized detunings between the coupled exciton and SPP resonances. Such a strong interaction can, e.g., be used to enhance the luminescence yield of semiconductor quantum structures or to amplify SPP waves.

Acetylplatinum(II) complexes trans-[Pt(COMe)Cl(L)2] (L = PPh3, 2a; P(4-FC6H4)3, 2b) were found to react with dialkyldisulfides R2S2 (R = Me, Et, Pr, Bu; Pr = n-propyl, Bu = n-butyl), yielding trinuclear 44 cve (cluster valence electrons) platinum clusters [(PtL)3(mu-SR)3]Cl (4). The analogous reaction of 2a-b with Ph2S2 gave SPh bridged dinuclear complexes trans-[{PtCl(L)}2(mu-SPh)2] (5), whereas the addition of Bn2S2 (Bn = benzyl) to 2a ended up in the formation of [{Pt(PPh3)}3(mu3-S)(mu-SBn)3]Cl (6). Theoretical studies based on the AIM theory revealed that type 4 complexes must be regarded as triangular platinum clusters with Pt-Pt bonds whereas complex 6 must be treated as a sulfur capped 48 ve (valence electrons) trinuclear platinum(II) complex without Pt-Pt bonding interactions. Phosphine ligands with a lower donor capability in clusters 4 proved to be subject to substitution by stronger donating monodentate phosphine ligands (L' = PMePh2, PMe2Ph, PBu3) yielding clusters [(PtL')3(mu-SR)3]Cl (9). In case of the reaction of clusters 4 and 9 with PPh2CH2PPh2 (dppm), a fragmentation reaction occurred, and the complexes [(PtL)2(mu-SMe)(mu-dppm)]Cl (12) and [Pt(mu-SMe)2(dppm)] (13) were isolated. Furthermore, oxidation reactions of cluster [{Pt(PPh3)}3(mu-SMe)3]Cl (4a) using halogens (Br2, I2) gave dimeric platinum(II) complexes cis-[{PtX(PPh3)}2(mu-SMe)2] (14, X = Br, I) whereas oxidation reactions using sulfur and selenium afforded chalcogen capped trinuclear 48 ve complexes [{Pt(PPh3)}3(mu3-E)(mu-SMe)3] (15, E = S, Se). All compounds were fully characterized by means of NMR and IR spectroscopy, microanalyses, and ESI mass spectrometry. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analyses were performed for the triangular cluster 4a, the trinuclear complex 6, as well as for the dinuclear complexes trans-[{Pt(AsPh3)}2(mu-SPh)2] (5c), [{Pt(PPh3)}2(mu-SMe)(mu-dppm)]Cl (12a), and [{{PtBr(PPh3)}2(mu-SMe)2] (14a).

Quantum mechanical calculations based on an extended Heisenberg model are compared with ferromagnetic resonance experiments on prototype trilayer systems Ni(7)/Cu(n)/Co(2)/Cu(001) in order to determine and separate for the first time quantitatively the sources of the temperature dependence of interlayer exchange coupling. Magnon excitations are responsible for about 75% of the reduction of the coupling strength from zero to room temperature. The remaining 25% are due to temperature effects in the effective quantum well and the spacer-magnet interfaces.

The energies of the kinetically inert, electronically saturated Lukehart-type metalla-beta-diketone [Re{(COMe)2H}(CO)4] (9 a) and of the kinetically labile, electronically unsaturated platina-beta-diketones [Pt{(COMe)2H}Cl2]- (10 a), [Pt2{(COMe)2H}2(micro-Cl)2] (11 a), and [Pt{(COMe)2H}(bpy)]+ (12 a) have been calculated by DFT at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level using effective core potentials with consideration of relativistic effects for the transition metals. Analogously, energies of the requisite open (non-hydrogen-bonded) equilibrium conformers (9 b, 10 c, 11 b, 12 b) and energies which were obtained from the hydrogen-bonded conformers by rigid rotation of the OH group around the C--O bond by 180 degrees followed by relaxation of all bond lengths and angles (9 c, 10 d, 11 c, 12 d) have been calculated. These energies were found to be higher by 14.7/27.2 (9 b/9 c), 20.7/27.2 (10 c/10 d), 19.2/25.7 (11 b/11 c), and 9.4/19.6 kcal mol(-1) (12 b/12 d) than those of the intramolecularly O--HO hydrogen-bonded metalla-beta-diketones 9 a, 10 a, 11 a, and 12 a, respectively. In acetylacetone (Hacac), the generic organic analogue of metalla-beta-diketones, the energies of the most stable non-hydrogen-bonded enol isomer (6 b) and of the conformer derived from the H-bonded form by rigid rotation of the OH group by 180 degrees followed by subsequent relaxation of all bond lengths and angles (6 k) were found to be 10.9/16.1 kcal mol(-1) (6 b/6 k) higher compared to the intramolecularly O--HO bonded isomer 6 a. Thus, the hydrogen bonds in metalla-beta- diketones must be regarded as strong and were found to be up to twice as strong as that in acetylacetone. A linear relationship was found between the hydrogen-bond energies based on the rigidly rotated structures and the OO separation in the hydrogen-bonded structures. Furthermore, these energies were also found to be correlated with the electron densities at the OH bond critical points (rhobcp) in the O--HO bonds of metalla-beta-diketones 9 a, 10 a, 11 a, and 12 a (calculated using the AIM theory). The comparison of the energies of the doubly intermolecularly hydrogen-bonded dinuclear platina-beta-diketone [{Pt{(COMe)2H}(bpy)}2]2+ (14) with that of the mononuclear intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded cation [Pt{(COMe)2H}(bpy)]+ (12 a) showed that the intermolecular hydrogen bonds in 14 are weaker than the intramolecular hydrogen bond in 12.

Exercise exerts heterogeneous effects on TSH secretion. Whereas TSH is rapidly stimulated by physical exercise within minutes, and these effects are well supported by careful experiments, the results of studies concerning intermediate and long-term response of TSH release to exercise remain unclear, and the underlying mechanism for both is still open to speculation.
