On a two-dimensional crystal, a "superlattice" with nanometer-scale periodicity can be imposed to tune the Bloch electron spectrum, enabling novel physical properties inaccessible in the original crystal. While creating 2D superlattices by means of nanopatterned electric gates has been studied for band structure engineering in recent years, evidence of electron correlations─which drive many problems at the forefront of physics research─remains to be uncovered. In this work, we demonstrate signatures of a correlated insulator phase in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene modulated by a gate-defined superlattice potential, manifested as resistance peaks centered at integer multiples of single electron per superlattice unit cell carrier densities. The observation is consistent with the formation of a stack of flat low-energy bands due to the superlattice potential combined with inversion symmetry breaking. Our work paves the way to custom-designed superlattices for studying band structure engineering and strongly correlated electrons in 2D materials.

High structural stability, dual organic-inorganic nature, and tunability in chemical functionality are promising characteristics of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs). These properties assist Zr-MOFs in extending their applications in various fields, especially adsorptive removal of pollutants. In this work, two well-known Zr-MOFs (UiO-66(Zr) and MIL-140(Zr) with the formula Zr 6 O 4 (OH) 4 (BDC) 6 , H 2 BDC is benzene 1,4-dicarboxylic acid) were synthesized and decorated with a dihydrotetrazine functional group through postsynthesis linker exchange (PSLE). Two dihydrotetrazine (DHTZ)-functionalized frameworks, UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ and MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ, were applied for the removal of quinoline (Qui) and indole (Ind) from the model oil. The results of adsorption experiments at room temperature display that these functionalized Zr-MOFs have significantly improved removal capacities for Qui (875% for UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ and 303% for MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ) and Ind (722% for UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ and 257% for MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ). Mechanistic studies based on X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies reveal that there is a specific kind of host-guest interaction between dihydrotetrazine and nitrogen-containing compounds (NCCs). UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ adsorbs 1426 mg·g -1 Qui and 1176 mg·g -1 Ind, while MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ adsorbs 619 mg·g -1 Qui and 511 mg·g -1 Ind. The lower adsorption capacities of MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ compared to UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ are related to its lower surface area (783 m 2 ·g -1 versus 330 m 2 ·g -1 ). The recyclability of the frameworks goes up to five cycles without any significant decrease in the removal capacity. These results indicate that dihydrotetrazine-functionalized Zr-MOFs are highly stable platforms with superior adsorption capacity compared to basic and neutral NCCs.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality for both men and women among all ethnicities worldwide. Although significant improvements in the management of CVD occurred in the 20th century, non-invasive, universal, early diagnostic biomarkers and newer therapeutic drugs are needed for clinical treatment by physicians. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of endogenous, non-coding, single-stranded, small RNA molecules that are critically controlled by all human biological processes. Moreover, dysregulated miRNA expression is directly involved in various CVDs, including stable coronary artery disease and acute coronary syndrome. Several miRNAs that are enriched in the plasma of CVD patients have potential as clinical biomarkers, and overexpression or inhibition of specific miRNAs has novel therapeutic significance in the management of CVD. Aging is a multifactorial physiological process that gradually deteriorates tissue and organ function and is considered a non-modifiable major risk factor for CVDs. Recently, several studies established that various miRNAs essentially regulate aging and aging-related disease processes. Background: Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is an acute infectious disease that damages the rabbit industry by producing significant mortality rates in young and adult rabbits. RHD is better controlled by vaccination., Objective: The current study's goal was to prepare and evaluate the immuno-enhancing effect of montanide ISA70 and aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH) 3 ) gel incorporated within the inactivated RHDV2 vaccine and assess the vaccine's protective efficacy against the homologous and heterologous local RHDV2 strains in rabbits., Methods: Inactivated RHDV vaccines were prepared using Montanide ISA70 oil or Al(OH) 3 gel adjuvants and submitted to sterility, safety, and potency tests. 200 rabbits were equally divided into 4 groups: G1 (control), G2 (vaccinated with gel-incorporated vaccine), G3 (vaccinated with montanide-incorporated vaccine), and G4 (vaccinated with gel- and montanide-incorporated vaccines). Individual blood samples were collected from one week to six months from all groups. The vaccine's potency was measured by the HI test and protection percentage post challenge., Results: Data revealed slightly increasing HI titer means reaching the 1st peak at 4 weeks post-vaccination (7.33, 7.67, and 7.33 log2 in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th groups, respectively), then slightly decreasing and peaked again, giving 9.33 log2 for the2 nd group at 3 months post-vaccination (MPV), 10.67 log2 for 3rd the group, and 10.33 log2 for the 4th group at 5 months post-vaccination. Titer gradually decreased but remained protective. The protection rate ranged from 80-100% and 80-90% for homologous and heterologous local RHDV2 vaccines, respectively, within 3 weeks and 6 months post-challenge. The montanide oil RHDV2 vaccine induced better protection than the aluminum gel RHDV2 vaccine., Conclusion: The results demonstrated evidence of cross-protection between RHDV2 strains. We propose heterostructures that realize first and second order topological superconductivity with vanishing net magnetization by utilizing altermagnetism. Such platforms may offer a significant improvement over conventional platforms with uniform magnetization since the latter suppresses the superconducting gap. We first introduce a 1D semiconductor-superconductor structure in proximity to an altermagnet that realizes end Majorana zero modes (MZMs) with vanishing net magnetization. Additionally, a coexisting Zeeman term provides a tuning knob to distinguish topological and trivial zero modes. We then propose 2D altermagnetic platforms that can realize chiral Majorana fermions or higher order corner MZMs. Our Letter paves the way toward realizing Majorana boundary states with an alternative source of time-reversal breaking and zero net magnetization.

Quantum geometry plays a pivotal role in the second-order response of PT-symmetric antiferromagnets. Here we study the nonlinear response of 2D altermagnets protected by C_{n}T symmetry and show that their leading nonlinear response is third order. Furthermore, we show that the contributions from the quantum metric and Berry curvature enter separately: the longitudinal response for all planar altermagnets only has a contribution from the quantum metric quadrupole (QMQ), while transverse responses in general have contributions from both the Berry curvature quadrupole (BCQ) and QMQ. We show that for the well-known example of d-wave altermagnets the Hall response is dominated by the BCQ. Both longitudinal and transverse responses are strongly dependent on the crystalline anisotropy. While altermagnets are strictly defined in the limit of vanishing spin orbit coupling (SOC), real altermagnets exhibit weak SOC, which is essential to observe this response. Specifically, SOC gaps the spin-group protected nodal line, generating a response peak that is sharpest when SOC is weak. Two Dirac nodes also contribute a divergence to the nonlinear response, whose scaling changes as a function of SOC. Finally, we apply our results to thin films of the 3D altermagnet RuO_{2}. Our work uncovers distinct features of altermagnets in nonlinear transport, providing experimental signatures as well as a guide to disentangling the different components of their quantum geometry.

Bilateral edematous optic disc swelling from papilledema is caused by elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a clinical syndrome with elevated ICP of unclear etiology, is a frequent cause of this condition. IIH typically affects obese middle-aged females. Papilledema usually has a fairly symmetrical bilateral pattern. Unilateral papilledema is a rare disorder that must be detected early to avoid optic nerve damage. However, the etiology of unilateral papilledema remains unclear. Introduction:  Endometrial carcinoma, the most prevalent gynecologic malignancy in developed countries, represents a significant public health issue worldwide. DNA mismatch repair (dMMR) deficiency is an important molecular mechanism in endometrial carcinoma development, clinical course, and prognosis., Aims and Objectives:  This study aimed to determine the incidence and histological subtypes of endometrial carcinoma among Bahraini women, evaluate the prevalence of MMR deficiency using immunohistochemistry in these patients and analyze the association between MMR deficiency and clinicopathological features, including potential links to Lynch syndrome., Patients and Methods:  This single-center retrospective study included 115 endometrial carcinoma patients diagnosed between January 2020 to June 2023. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess the expression of the four main MMR proteins (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2). Clinicopathological features and survival outcomes were compared between MMR-deficient and MMR-proficient tumors. Medical records of patients were retrieved from I-SEHA system. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS., Results:  The study included a wide age range of patients, with a mean age of 59.5 years. The majority were Bahraini nationals. Endometrioid carcinoma was the most common histologic subtype (73%), followed by serous carcinoma (8.7%). Most patients presented with early-stage disease (76.8% stage I), and 39.8% had low-grade tumors. Significant proportions of cases showed loss of expression of mismatch repair (MMR) proteins MLH1 (24.2%), PMS2 (25%), MSH6 (14.5%), and MSH2 (12.7%), without significant associations with age.  Conclusion: This study found endometrial cancer to be a significant health concern in Bahrain, with a relatively high prevalence and younger age of onset compared to global averages. The data shows a predominance of endometrioid subtype and higher-grade tumors. Notably, a substantial proportion exhibited MMR deficiency, an important biomarker. These findings suggest the need for enhanced screening, early detection, and tailored treatment approaches in Bahrain. Introduction: The family plays a crucial role in shaping children's identity and understanding of gender-based roles. This study aims to explore the experiences of Iranian transgender individuals with their families' reactions to their transgender identity disclosure., Methods: In 2018, nurse researchers conducted this qualitative study on 11 transgender individuals in Iran using a phenomenological approach, targeted and snowball sampling, and Colaizzi's seven-step method for data analysis. Rigor was ensured by adhering to Lincoln and Guba's standards., Results: The study found varied reactions to transgender children among Iranian families, including abuse to avoid stigma. The study revealed two main themes, maladaptive and adaptive reactions, and identified six categories: denial of reality, mourning, coercion, deprivation, support out of necessity, and compromise of family reactions., Discussion: Education and support systems may help address the cultural challenges that face families with transgender children. Newly synthesized vaccines prepared from formalin-killed bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes were investigated in the current study to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly synthesized vaccine as well as their safety by injected intraperitoneal. The study involved several steps 1st step is the preparation of the vaccine followed by the 2nd step: Evaluate the effectiveness and vaccine safety against pathogenic S. pyogenes through 4 different groups including control (Group I). Group II (Bacterial, infected group), Group III (Vaccine), and the Last group was the challenged group after the vaccination (Vacc + Bac). Different Immunological and biochemical parameters were measured in addition to hematological and histopathological examinations. For example, oxidative/antioxidants, inflammatory biomarkers, fragmentation and cell damage, and finally the histopathological study. The current study showed an increase in all oxidative, inflammatory, and cell damage (DNA fragmentation assays), additionally markedly elevation in histopathological cell damage in the infected group (Group II) compared with the control group. The vaccine and challenged after vaccination group (vaccine + Bacteria), showed great improvement in oxidative biomarkers (LPO) and an increase in antioxidants biomarkers (GSH, SOD, GST, DPPH, ABTS, GR and GPx), Also the inflammation and histopathological examination. Myocardial infarction (MI), frequently referred to as a heart attack, happens when the blood supply to a region of the myocardium is reduced. It might be quiet or devastating, causing hemodynamic decline and rapid death. The most common cause of MI is coronary artery disease, which is the leading cause of mortality in the United States. Prolonged lack of oxygen can lead to myocardial cell loss and necrosis. Patients may report chest pain, pressure, and electrocardiogram alterations. Management of MI relies greatly on the interprofessional team. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of MI in Saudi Arabia. Between 2000 and 2024, English-language papers were gathered to demonstrate the prevalence of MI in Saudi Arabia. Overall, there were four articles. Surveys and studies of national databases were the most utilized methods (n=4). We found that heart attacks are a significant health issue in Saudi Arabia, with certain lifestyle choices and medical conditions increasing the risk. Heart attacks are a major health concern in Saudi Arabia. Introduction: Anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the left sinus of Valsalva (R-ACAOS) is a relatively rare condition that can potentially lead to devastating outcomes. The current study aims to investigate the cardiac-related disorders among patients with incidental R-ACAOS diagnosis through computed tomography angiography (CTA)., Methods: The current cross-sectional study has been conducted on 50 patients diagnosed with R-ACAOS who underwent CTA. Based on CTA, the patients' were categorized as R-ACAOS with interarterial course and non-interarterial course. The demographic and medical characteristics, any history of cardiac intervention and New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification at the time of diagnosis were recruited. Patients were revisited to assess cardiac-associated variables, including symptoms, the presence of heart failure and current NYHA function class., Results: The variables including the history of cardiac intervention (P-value<0.001), the presence of heart failure (P-value = 0.010) and NYHA function class at the time of diagnosis (P-value = 0.006) were remarkably higher among those with interarterial course of R-ACAOS; while, the other variables including chest pain at rest (P-value = 0.55) or on exertion (P-value = 0.12), current NYHA function class, current cardiac-associated symptoms except for dyspnea at rest (P-value = 0.012), mortality and coronary calium score did not differ (P-value>0.05). coronary interventions led to significantly improved NYHA function class (P-value<0.05)., Conclusion: Based on the findings of the current study, R-ACAOS with interarterial course leads to significantly higher rates of atherosclerotic-related symptoms and events compared with the other types of RCA anomalies. Objective: To investigate the relationship between dental fear and dental caries in children aged 6 to 12 years in a systematic review and meta-analysis., Methods: Systematic review search terms were selected according to medical subject headings (MeSH) or non-MeSH. An electronic search of studies published in English assessing the relationship between dental fear (children's fear survey schedule-dental subscale) and dental caries (DMFT or dmft index) was carried out of the Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Proquest databases up to March 2022. Of 5,759 articles retrieved initially, 16 were eligible for inclusion in the study, and 5 of these were included in the quantitative analysis. The quality of studies was evaluated based on the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Begg tests were employed to assess the publication bias., Results: According to the meta-analysis, the results revealed no statistically significant difference in mean of DMFT score in low and high fear score groups, with a mean difference of 1.28 (95% confidence interval -0.132 to 2.693) (P = 0.076). A statistically significant difference was found in the mean dmft score for the low and high fear score groups, with a mean difference of 0.227 (95% confidence interval 0.058 to 0.395) (P = 0.008). The mean dmft was significantly higher in the high fear score group., Conclusion: Dental fear has a significant relationship with caries in primary teeth, but not in permanent teeth.

Background: Papilledema is the optic disc swelling caused by increased intracranial pressure (ICP) that can damage the optic nerve and cause subsequent vision loss. Pseudopapilledema refers to optic disc elevation without peripapillary fluid that can arise from several optic disc disorders, with optic disc drusen (ODD) being the most frequent cause. Occasionally, pseudopapilledema patients are mistakenly diagnosed as papilledema, leading to the possibility of unneeded procedures. We aim to thoroughly examine the most current evidence on papilledema and pseudopapilledema causes and several methods for distinguishing between both conditions., Methods: An extensive literature search was conducted on electronic databases including PubMed and google scholar using keywords that were relevant to the assessed pathologies. Data were collected and then summarized in comprehensive form., Results: Various techniques are employed to distinguish between papilledema and pseudopapilledema. These techniques include Fundus fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Lumbar puncture and other invasive procedures may be needed if results are suspicious., Conclusion: Papilledema is a sight-threatening condition that may lead to visual affection. Many disc conditions may mimic papilledema. Accordingly, differentiation between papilledema and pseudopailledema is crucial and can be conducted through many modalities., (© 2024. Trehalose serves as a crucial osmolyte and plays a significant role in stress tolerance. The influence of exogenously added trehalose (1 and 5 mM) in alleviating the chromium (Cr; 0.5 mM) stress-induced decline in growth, photosynthesis, mineral uptake, antioxidant system and nitrate reductase activity in Vigna radiata was studied. Chromium (Cr) significantly declined shoot height (39.33%), shoot fresh weight (35.54%), shoot dry weight (36.79%), total chlorophylls (50.70%), carotenoids (29.96%), photosynthesis (33.97%), net intercellular CO 2 (26.86%), transpiration rate (36.77%), the content of N (35.04%), P (35.77%), K (31.33%), S (23.91%), Mg (32.74%), and Ca (29.67%). However, the application of trehalose considerably alleviated the decline. Application of trehalose at both concentrations significantly reduced hydrogen peroxide accumulation, lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage, which were increased due to Cr stress. Application of trehalose significantly mitigated the Cr-induced oxidative damage by up-regulating the activity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (182.03%), catalase (125.40%), ascorbate peroxidase (72.86%), and glutathione reductase (68.39%). Besides this, applied trehalose proved effective in enhancing ascorbate (24.29%) and reducing glutathione content (34.40%). In addition, also alleviated the decline in ascorbate by Cr stress to significant levels. The activity of nitrate reductase enhanced significantly (28.52%) due to trehalose activity and declined due to Cr stress (34.15%). Exogenous application of trehalose significantly improved the content of osmolytes, including proline, glycine betaine, sugars and total phenols under normal and Cr stress conditions. Over the recent decades, stem cell-based therapies have been considered as a beneficial approach for the treatment of various diseases. In these types of therapies, the stem cells and their products are used as treating agents. Despite the helpful efficacy of stem cell-based therapies, there may be challenges. Oxidative stress (OS) is one of these challenges that can affect the therapeutic properties of stem cells. Therefore, it seems that employing strategies for the reduction of OS in combination with stem cell therapy can lead to better results of these therapies. Based on the available evidence, antioxidant therapy and photobiomodulation (PBM) are strategies that can regulate the OS in the cells. Antioxidant therapy is a method in which various antioxidants are used in the therapeutic processes. PBM is also the clinical application of light that gained importance in medicine. Antioxidants and PBM can regulate OS by the effect on mitochondria as an important source of OS in the cells. Considering the importance of OS in pathologic pathways and its effect on the treatment outcomes of stem cells, in the present review first the stem cell therapy and effects of OS on this type of therapy are summarized. Then, antioxidant therapy and PBM as approaches for reducing OS with a focus on mitochondrial function are discussed. Wound infections are a significant concern in healthcare, leading to long healing times. Traditional approaches for managing wound infections rely heavily on systemic antibiotics, which are associated with the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Therefore, the development of alternative antibacterial materials for wound care has gained considerable attention. In today's world, new generations of wound dressing are commonly used to heal wounds. These new dressings keep the wound and the area around it moist to improve wound healing. However, this moist environment can also foster an environment that is favorable for the growth of bacteria. Excessive antibiotic use poses a significant threat to human health and causes bacterial resistance, so new-generation wound dressings must be designed and developed to reduce the risk of infection. Wound dressings using antimicrobial compounds minimize wound bacterial colonization, making them the best way to avoid open wound infection. We aim to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the latest advancements in antibacterial materials for wound management.

Background: Septic necrosis of the femoral head and neck in children represents a challenging problem. Several reconstructive techniques have been described but with disappointing long-term results. Vascularized epiphyseal transfer utilizing the proximal fibula have been successfully used for reconstruction of the proximal humerus and distal radius and only scarcely used for hip reconstruction. This cohort represents the largest reported series of epiphyseal transfer for hip reconstruction following septic necrosis in children., Methods: A total of 18 patients with an average age at surgery of 5.4 years were included. The average follow-up was 3.6 years (range 2.3 to 6.8 y)., Results: Transient postoperative foot drop was observed in 4 patients. Radiographic resorption of the transferred fibula occurred in 2 cases. Longitudinal growth averaged 7.3 mm/year, and the physis width increased by an average of 2.7 mm/year. The rate of longitudinal growth was fastest after the age of 10 years (18.5 mm/y), which coincides with the pubertal growth spurt. All successful transfers had an open growth plate on final follow-up radiographs. Ten patients had limb length discrepancy of an average 2.8 cm (range 1 to 8 cm). Thirteen patients had satisfactory functional according to the criteria of Hunka et al. Three patients had unsatisfactory results; one had painful nonunion at the fibula-femur junction, and the other two had limited flexion range of 45 degrees. The average postoperative neck-shaft angle was 96.4 degrees which decreased by an average of 8 degrees at the final follow-up. Three patients underwent a valgus subtrochanteric osteotomy to correct a severe varus deformity. The final neck-shaft angle correlated significantly with the functional results where it averaged 96 degrees in the satisfactory group and 57 degrees in the unsatisfactory group., Conclusion: Vascularized epiphyseal transfer presents a promising treatment for children with septic necrosis of the femoral head and neck in whom other methods have failed to provide satisfactory long-term results. One of the significant challenges of vanadium redox flow batteries is connected to the negative electrode where the main reaction of V(ii)/V(iii) and the side reaction of hydrogen evolution compete. To address this issue, we used titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene coating via drop-casting to introduce oxygen functional groups and metals on the carbon electrode surface. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the even distribution of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene on the electrodes and the presence of titanium and termination groups (-O, -Cl, and -F). The cyclic voltammetry analysis of MXene-coated electrodes showed more sharp electrochemical peaks for the V(ii)/V(iii) reaction than thermal-treated electrodes, even at relatively high scan rates. Notably, a relatively high reaction rate of 5.61 × 10 -4 cm s -1 was achieved for the V(ii)/V(iii) reaction on MXene-coated electrodes, which shows the competitiveness of the method compared to thermal treatment (4.17 × 10 -4 cm s -1 ). The flow battery tests, at a current density of 130 mA cm -2 , using MXene-coated electrodes showed pretty stable discharge capacity for over 100 cycles. In addition, the voltage and energy efficiency were significantly higher than those of the system using untreated electrodes. This article proposes an exploration technique for multiagent reinforcement learning (MARL) with graph-based communication among agents. We assume that the individual rewards received by the agents are independent of the actions by the other agents, while their policies are coupled. In the proposed framework, neighboring agents collaborate to estimate the uncertainty about the state-action space in order to execute more efficient explorative behavior. Different from existing works, the proposed algorithm does not require counting mechanisms and can be applied to continuous-state environments without requiring complex conversion techniques. Moreover, the proposed scheme allows agents to communicate in a fully decentralized manner with minimal information exchange. And for continuous-state scenarios, each agent needs to exchange only a single parameter vector. The performance of the algorithm is verified with theoretical results for discrete-state scenarios and with experiments for the continuous ones.

Thrombin, a proteolytic enzyme, plays an essential role in catalyzing many blood clotting reactions. Thrombin can act as a marker for some blood-related diseases, such as leukemia, thrombosis, Alzheimer's disease and liver disease. Therefore, its diagnosis is of great importance in the fields of biological and medical research. Biosensors containing sandwich-type structures have attracted much consideration owing to their superior features such as reproducible and stable responses with easy improvement in the sensitivity of detection. Sandwich-type platforms can be designed using a pair of receptors that are able to bind to diverse locations of the same target. Herein, we investigate recent advances in the progress and applications of thrombin aptasensors containing a sandwich-type structure, in which two thrombin-binding aptamers (TBAs) identify different parts of the thrombin molecule, leading to the formation of a sandwich structure and ultimately signal detection. We also discuss the pros and cons of these approaches and outline the most logical approach in each section.

Objective: Staging workup and detection of distant metastases is important in newly diagnosed breast cancer in order to make treatment decisions and establish the prognosis. There is wide variation in current recommendations for staging investigations in breast cancer. Routine staging is performed for all patients in Bahrain because of lack of consistent guidelines. Optimization of the criteria for staging is important for identification of metastases, while minimizing harm and costs. The aim of this study was to evaluate factors associated with distant metastases in newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer, in order to establish local guidelines for proper selection of patients for systemic staging., Materials and Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer at Salmaniya Medical Complex in Bahrain who underwent staging investigations between January 2016 and December 2022 were identified from a pathology database. Patients with previous history of cancer, synchronous tumors, bilateral breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ were excluded. Clinical, radiological and pathological data were retrospectively analyzed., Results: A total of 593 patients underwent staging computed tomography and bone scans or a PET scan. Distant metastases were identified in 20.7% of cases. M1 disease was significantly associated with multifocality/multicentricity, high grade tumors, hormone receptor-negative cancers, high Ki67 index, advanced tumor stage, node-positive disease, triple-negative breast cancer, use of PET scans and those who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Age was not associated with identification of distant metastases., Conclusion: The prevalence of distant metastases in this population of newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer was higher than previously reported. Routine staging of all patients at presentation was not indicated, especially for asymptomatic patients with early breast cancer. This study identified certain groups of patients with a higher risk of distant metastasis, in whom metastatic workup should be performed. Direct removal of trivalent arsenic, As(III), arsenite, or H 3 AsO 3 , is a great challenge in accessing clean sources of water. Different methodologies and materials were applied in this regard, but among them, direct removal of As(III) species using a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based adsorbent shows a great deal of potential. Although some studies were conducted on As(III) removal using MOFs, studies of functional groups are still quite rare. For this purpose, three novel functionalized defective Zr-MOFs, using UiO-66 [Zr 6 (OH) 4 O 4 (BDC) 6 , where BDC 2- = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate], were fabricated to investigate the competitive or cooperative roles of the free -NH 2 and/or -SH site in the removal of As(III). UiO-66 was functionalized with monocarboxylate linkers, including glycine (Gly, NH 2 -CH 2 -COOH), cysteine [Cys, SH(CH 2 )-NH 2 (CH)-COOH], and mercaptopropionic acid [Mer, SH-(CH 2 ) 2 -COOH]. Gly@UiO-66, Cys@UiO-66, and Mer@UiO-66 were applied for the direct removal of As(III) species. Although Cys@UiO-66 is functionalized with both amine and thiol functional groups, Gly@UiO-66 has a higher adsorption capacity (301.4 mg g -1 ) with respect to As(III), which is among the best reported values. This is due to the fact that (1) the affinity of amine sites in Gly@UiO-66 for As(III) is higher than that of thiol sites in Mer@UiO-66 and (2) Cys@UiO-66 has a very small surface area compared to that of Gly@UiO-66. Mechanistic studies using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and vibrational spectroscopy reveal that not only the functionalization and chemical nature of the function but also other parameters such as the protonation-deprotonation mechanisms and chemical state of the function are other critical factors for designing a functional MOF-based adsorbent with high affinity for and maximum capacity with respect to the target analyte.

Zirconium metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) are potential candidates for decontamination of water resources from harmful pollutants due to their modulable porosity and chemical stability in aqueous solutions. Linker functionalization is an approach for tuning the host-guest chemistry of Zr-MOFs and extends their applications in environmental monitoring. In this work, the structure of UiO-66(Zr) (formulated Zr 6 (OH) 4 O 4 (BDC) 6 , BDC 2- = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) was functionalized with dihydrotetrazine group via postsynthesis linker exchange (PSLE) method. The functionalized framework, UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ, was applied for the removal of arsenate ions from aqueous solutions. The results show that UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ can adsorb 583 mg g -1 of As(V) at pH = 7 after 2 h, which is significantly higher than that of the UiO-66(Zr). According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), the removal mechanism is based on possible hydrogen bindings between free -C-NH and -C═N- sites of dihydrotetrazine function with -O - and -OH sites of As(V) species. Removal tests in real samples show that UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ still has a high capacity (220 mg g -1 ) to As(V) ions in complex matrixes and also can decrease the concentration of As(V) below the detection limit (0.05 ppm) of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method. Since the dihydrotetrazine-decorated UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ reaches one the highest adsorption capacities to As(V) species, it can be considered a potential candidate for water treatment in real-life applications.

Functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), especially those based on sulfur and nitrogen atoms, were frequently applied for the removal of Hg(II) ions. However, a systematic study on the cooperative or competitive roles of -SH and -NH 2 functions in the presence of secondary mechanisms (proton transfer and redox) is still rare. In this work, the UiO-66 framework (Zr 6 (OH) 4 O 4 (BDC) 6 , BDC 2- = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) was decorated with functional monocarboxylate linkers including glycine (Gly), mercaptopropionic acid (Mer), and cysteine (Cys). Due to the molecular similarity of these functional linkers, the coordination affinity between the amine and thiol sites with Hg(II) ions can be compared, and the effect of proton transfer and redox mechanisms on the possible thiol···Hg(II) and amine···Hg(II) interactions can be investigated. The results show that the Cys@UiO-66 framework can adsorb 1288 mg g -1 of Hg(II), while Mer@UiO-66 and Gly@UiO-66 can adsorb 593 and 313 mg g -1 at pH = 7 and 500 ppm, respectively. This is due to the facts that both the amine and the thiol functions of the Cys@UiO-66 framework show synergism in Hg(II) removal, and the secondary mechanisms reduce the affinity of thiol in Mer@UiO-66 and amine in Gly@UiO-66 frameworks in the removal process of Hg(II) ions. Free -SH sites in Mer@UiO-66 undergo a redox convert to -SO 3 H groups, and free protonated -NH 2 sites in Gly@UiO-66 do not fully deprotonate during Hg(II) removal. Yet, in the case of Cys@UiO-66, free protonated -NH 2 sites are fully deprotonated, and free SH sites did not convert to -SO 3 H groups during Hg(II) removal. These observations show that the redox and proton transfer mechanisms can negatively affect the adsorption capacity of functional MOFs containing free -SH and -NH 2 groups. So, not only the functionalization but also control over secondary mechanisms in the removal process are necessary parameters to improve the affinity between functional MOFs and Hg(II) ions.

Background: Inflammation has been suggested to play a role in heart failure (HF) pathogenesis. However, the role of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), as a novel biomarker, to assess HF prognosis needs to be investigated. We sought to evaluate the impact of PLR on HF clinical outcomes., Methods: English-published records in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web-of-science databases were screened until December 2023. Relevant articles evaluated PLR with clinical outcomes (including mortality, rehospitalization, HF worsening, and HF detection) were recruited, with PLR difference analysis based on death/survival status in total and HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients., Results: In total, 21 articles ( n  = 13,924) were selected. The total mean age was 70.36 ± 12.88 years (males: 61.72%). Mean PLR was 165.54 [95% confidence interval (CI): 154.69-176.38]. In total, 18 articles ( n  = 10,084) reported mortality [either follow-up (PLR: 162.55, 95% CI: 149.35-175.75) or in-hospital (PLR: 192.83, 95% CI: 150.06-235.61) death rate] and the mean PLR was 166.68 (95% CI: 154.87-178.50). Further analysis revealed PLR was significantly lower in survived HF patients rather than deceased group (152.34, 95% CI: 134.01-170.68 versus 194.73, 95% CI: 175.60-213.85, standard mean difference: -0.592, 95% CI: -0.857 to -0.326, p  < 0.001). A similar trend was observed for HFrEF patients. PLR failed to show any association with mortality risk (hazard ratio: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.99-1.05, p  = 0.289). Analysis of other aforementioned outcomes was not possible due to the presence of few studies of interest., Conclusion: PLR should be used with caution for prognosis assessment in HF sufferers and other studies are necessary to explore the exact association.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer fascinating opportunities for fundamental nanoscale science and various technological applications. They are a promising platform for next generation optoelectronics and energy harvesting devices due to their exceptional characteristics at the nanoscale, such as tunable bandgap and strong light-matter interactions. The performance of TMD-based devices is mainly governed by the structure, composition, size, defects, and the state of their interfaces. Many properties of TMDs are influenced by the method of synthesis so numerous studies have focused on processing high-quality TMDs with controlled physicochemical properties. Plasma-based methods are cost-effective, well controllable, and scalable techniques that have recently attracted researchers' interest in the synthesis and modification of 2D TMDs. TMDs' reactivity toward plasma offers numerous opportunities to modify the surface of TMDs, including functionalization, defect engineering, doping, oxidation, phase engineering, etching, healing, morphological changes, and altering the surface energy. Here we comprehensively review all roles of plasma in the realm of TMDs. The fundamental science behind plasma processing and modification of TMDs and their applications in different fields are presented and discussed. Future perspectives and challenges are highlighted to demonstrate the prominence of TMDs and the importance of surface engineering in next-generation optoelectronic applications.

Contemporary agriculture heavily relies on pesticides for pest eradication and disease management. Consequently, current study was carried out to assess the acaricidal/antifungal efficacy of emulsifiable concentrate (10 % EC) derived from Boswellia carterii ( B. carterii ) against adult females of Tetranychus urticae ( T. urticae ), and five fungal pathogens. The meticulous examination of the chemical constitution of the crude extracts derived from the resin of B. carterii was conducted through the employment of the venerable technique known as Gas-Liquid Chromatography (GLC). The formulated petroleum-ether extract (FPEE) and formulated ethyl-acetate extract (FEAE) of B. carterii at a concentration of 10 mg ml -1 exhibited notable antioxidant activity with rates of 62.0 % and 90.8 %, respectively. In vitro , the FEAE exhibited potent inhibition against all the tested phytopathogenic fungi at different concentrations, whereas FPEE showed comparatively less efficacy. Interestingly, at 4000 ppm concentration, FEAE completely ceased the mycelial growth compared with the control. Moreover, following a span of 72 h of intervention, FPEE exhibited a greater degree of toxicity towards mature females of the T. urticae. This was evidenced by the LC 50 value of 422.52 parts per million (ppm) for FPEE, which surpassed the LC 50 value of 539.50 ppm observed for FEAE. Background: Frailty is a common problem in elderly individuals. However, this issue is not well investigated among heart failure (HF) patients with appropriate scales. We aimed to translate and evaluate Edmonton frailty scale (EFS) validity and reliability in Iranian HF adults., Methods: We implemented this methodological study on stable HF patients referred to an outpatient heart clinic in Isfahan, Iran. The translation was done using the forward-backward method. Ten individuals were asked to comment about all items in terms of understandability and simplicity. Fifteen experts were invited, and their ratings on each item were collected to measure the content validity index (CVI) and content validity ratio (CVR). Cronbach's alpha was used for the assessment of internal consistency. After completing the scale for the second time with a two-week interval, test-retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) measurement was done., Results: The translation process was performed uneventfully. All items were reported to be simple and meaningful. CVI of items ranged from the minimum of 0.80 to a maximum of 1.00 plus an acceptable CVR of at least 0.60. Fifty HF patients (age: 67.2±14.1 years, males: 56%) completed the questionnaire twice without missing data. Cronbach's alpha was first to be 0.550. After omitting three items about social support, drug usage, and nutrition, the value was raised to 0.711. Test-retest reliability showed a good index of consistency (ICC: 0.693, 95% confidence interval: 0.527-0.810)., Conclusion: Modified Persian EFS is a simple and meaningful tool with high validity and acceptable reliability for assessing frailty in HF individuals irrespective of age., Competing Interests: None of the authors had any personal or financial conflicts of interest.

Changing morbidity and mortality due to COVID-19 across the pandemic has been linked with factors such as the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants and vaccination. Mutations in the Spike glycoprotein enhanced viral transmission and virulence. We investigated whether SARS-CoV-2 mutation rates and entropy were associated COVID-19 in Pakistan, before and after the introduction of vaccinations. We analyzed 1,705 SARS-CoV-2 genomes using the Augur phylogenetic pipeline. Substitution rates and entropy across the genome, and in the Spike glycoprotein were compared between 2020, 2021 and 2022 (as periods A, B and C). Mortality was greatest in B whilst cases were highest during C. In period A, G clades were predominant, and substitution rate was 5.25 × 10 -4 per site per year. In B, Delta variants dominated, and substitution rates increased to 9.74 × 10 -4 . In C, Omicron variants led to substitution rates of 5.02 × 10 -4 . Genome-wide entropy was the highest during B particularly, at Spike E484K and K417N. During C, genome-wide mutations increased whilst entropy was reduced. Enhanced SARS-CoV-2 genome substitution rates were associated with a period when more virulent SARS-CoV-2 variants were prevalent. Reduced substitution rates and stabilization of genome entropy was subsequently evident when vaccinations were introduced. Background: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), as a recent inflammatory index, has been reported to be a prognostic tool in different diseases. However, implication of this ratio in heart failure (HF) is less investigated. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the potential impact of NLR on HF clinical outcomes., Methods: Relevant English published records in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were screened up to July 2023. Articles reporting clinical outcomes (follow-up or in-hospital mortality, readmission, HF prediction, extended hospital stay length, pulmonary vascular resistance, atrial fibrillation, renal disease and functional capacity) in HF sufferers were collected for further analysis with addition of NLR difference stratified by death/survived and HF status., Results: Thirty-six articles (n = 18231) were finally selected which reported NLR in HF sufferers (mean: 4.38, 95% confidence interval (CI): 4.02-4.73). We found 25 articles reported NLR and total mortality (either follow-up death (N = 19): 4.52 (95% CI: 4.03-5.01) or in-hospital death (N = 10): 5.33 (95% CI: 4.08-6.57)) with mean NLR of 4.74 (95% CI: 4.28-5.20). NLR was higher among deceased patients compared to survived ones (standard mean difference: 0.67 (95% CI: 0.48-0.87), P < 0.001)). NLR was found to be related with higher mortality risk (continuous variable: hazard ratio (HR): 1.12, 95% CI: 1.02-1.23, P = 0.013), categorical variable: HR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.27-2.46, P = 0.001, T2 vs. T1: HR:1.56, 95%CI: 1.21-2.00, P = 0.001, T3 vs. T1: HR:2.49, 95%CI: 1.85-3.35, P < 0.001). Other aforementioned variables were not feasible to analyze due to presence of few studies., Conclusions: NLR is a simple and acceptable prognostic tool for risk stratification and prioritizing high risk patients in clinical settings, especially in resource limited nations., (© 2023. Chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been rapidly evolving in different parts of the world. We examined the clinical and angiographic characteristics and procedural outcomes of 1,079 consecutive CTO PCIs performed in 1,063 patients at 10 centers in the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, and Asia regions between 2018 and 2022. The mean age was 61 ± 10 years and 82% of the patients were men. The prevalence of diabetes (49%) and previous PCI (50%) was high. The most common target vessel was the right coronary artery (51%), followed by the left anterior descending artery (33%) and the circumflex artery (15%). The mean Japanese CTO score was 2.1 ± 1.2 and mean PROGRESS-CTO (Prospective Global Registry for the Study of Chronic Total Occlusion Intervention) score was 1.2 ± 1.0. The technical and procedural success rates were high (91% and 90%, respectively) with a low incidence (1.6%) of in-hospital major adverse cardiac events. The incidence of perforation was 4.6% (n = 50): guidewire exit was the most common mechanism of perforation (48%) and 14 patients required pericardiocentesis (28%). Antegrade wire escalation was the most common crossing strategy used (91%), followed by retrograde approach (24%) and antegrade dissection and re-entry (12%). Median contrast volume, air kerma radiation dose, and fluoroscopy time were 300 (200 to 400) ml, 3.7 (2.0 to 6.3) Gy, and 40 (25 to 65) minutes, respectively. Drought stress memory occurring in some plants plays a crucial role in their adaptation to unfavorable conditions. However, in open-pollinated plants, this phenomenon is assumed to be affected by population plasticity resulting from kind and level of diversity and inbreeding depression. Physiological perspectives of drought stress memory in four synthetic poly-crossed populations (groups) of orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) constructed from parental genotypes with contrasting levels (narrow and wide) of molecular and morphological genetic variation were assessed. Populations of two generations (Syn1 and Syn2) were developed and were subjected to three moisture treatments, including normal irrigation (C), primary mild stress-secondary intense stress (D1D2), and secondary intense stress (D2). Pre-exposure to drought significantly improved the mean values of leaf water, chlorophyll, proline, and ascorbate peroxidase compared to intense stress, leading to more effective memory responses. Superiority of groups with high levels of molecular diversity for most traits, suggesting that the molecular genetic distance among parents is an effective predictor of progeny performance. The results indicated that the fitness of progenies of the four polycross groups declines significantly from Syn1 to Syn2, however the magnitude of observed inbreeding depends on the level of diversity and moisture conditions. We propose a hypothesis that underscores the interplay between genetic diversity among parents and drought stress memory providing valuable insights for developing new synthetic varieties in open-pollinated grasses. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder associated with various complications encompassing male reproductive dysfunction. The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of biologically active Lepidium sativum seed oil (LSO) against the testicular dysfunction associated with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. Male adults (n = 24) were divided into four groups: control, LSO-administered, diabetic (D), and LSO-treated diabetic (D+LSO) groups. LSO was extracted from L. sativum seeds, and its chemical composition was determined using GC-MS. Serum testosterone levels, testicular enzymatic antioxidants (catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)), an oxidative stress (OS) biomarker, malondialdehyde (MDA), pro-inflammatory markers (NF-kB, IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-α), and the expression level of NF-kB were assessed. In addition, histopathological changes were evaluated in testicular tissues. The results obtained showed that the chemical composition of LSO indicated its enrichment mainly with γ-tocopherol (62.1%), followed by 2-methylhexacosane (8.12%), butylated hydroxytoluene (8.04%), 10-Methylnonadecane (4.81%), and δ-tocopherol (3.91%). Moreover, LSO administration in the D+LSO mice significantly increased testosterone levels and ameliorated the observed testicular oxidative damage, inflammatory response, and reduced NF-kB expression compared to the diabetic mice. Biochemical and molecular analyses confirmed the histological results. In conclusion, LSO may prevent the progression of diabetes-induced impairment in the testes through inhibition of the OS- and NF-kB-mediated inflammatory response.

Future generations of solid-state lighting (SSL) will prioritize the development of innovative luminescent materials with superior characteristics. The phosphors converted into white light-emitting diodes (white LEDs) often have a blue-green cavity. Cyan-emitting phosphor fills the spectral gap and produces "full-visible-spectrum lighting." Full-visible spectrum lighting is beneficial for several purposes, such as light therapy, plant growth, and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. The design of cyan garnet-type phosphors, like Ca 2 LuHf 2 Al 3 O 12 (CLHAO), has recently been the subject of interest. This review study reports a useful cyan-emitting phosphor based on CLHAO composition with a garnet structure to have a cyan-to-green emitting color with good energy transfer. It could be employed as cyan filler in warm-white LED manufacturing. Due to its stability, ability to dope with various ions suitable for their desired qualities, and ease of synthesis, this garnet-like compound is a great host material for rare-earth ions. The development of CLHAO cyan-emitting phosphors has exceptionally high luminescence, resulting in high CRI and warm-white LEDs, making them a viable desire for LED manufacturing. In this study, a Co-MOF was synthesized via a co-precipitation procedure and then used as support for stabilizing Ag ions and producing Co-MOF@Ag 2 O nanocomposite by microwave irradiation. The characterization of synthesized Co-MOF@Ag 2 O nanocomposite was performed by using different techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR). The prepared Co-MOF@Ag 2 O nanocomposite was applied as a heterogeneous nano-catalyst in the synthesis of pyrazolopyranopyrimidines in water at 50 °C via the one-pot multicomponent reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, hydrazine hydrate, aromatic aldehydes and barbituric acid derivatives. Through this straightforward and effective protocol, different tricyclic fused pyrazolopyranopyrimidines were synthesized at high yields, and short reaction times, through an uncomplicated work-up process with no by-product. The Co-MOF@Ag 2 O nanocomposite has been effectively recycled for four consecutive cycles without appreciable loss in its activity. Cost-effectiveness, no need for column chromatography, mild conditions, catalyst recyclability, and eco-friendly nature make it a promising candidate compared to other methods., (© 2023. Perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) have emerged as a promising class of luminescent materials offering size and composition-tunable luminescence with high efficiency and color purity in the visible range. PeNCs doped with Yb 3+ ions, known for their near-infrared (NIR) emission properties, have gained significant attention due to their potential applications. However, these materials still face challenges with weak NIR electroluminescence (EL) emission and low external quantum efficiency (EQE), primarily due to undesired resonance energy transfer (RET) occurring between the host and Yb 3+ ions, which adversely affects their emission efficiency and device performance. Herein, we report the synergistic enhancement of NIR emission in a CsPbCl 3 host through co-doping with Yb 3+ /Nd 3+ ions for perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs). The co-doping of Yb 3+ /Nd 3+ ions in a CsPbCl 3 host resulted in enhanced NIR emission above 1000 nm, which is highly desirable for NIR optoelectronic applications. This cooperative energy transfer between Yb 3+ and Nd 3+ can enhance the overall efficiency of energy conversion. Furthermore, the PeLEDs incorporating the co-doped CsPbCl 3 /Yb 3+ /Nd 3+ PeNCs as an emitting layer exhibited significantly enhanced NIR EL compared to the single doped PeLEDs. The optimized co-doped PeLEDs showed improved device performance, including increased EQE of 6.2% at 1035 nm wavelength and low turn-on voltage. Our findings highlight the potential of co-doping with Yb 3+ and Nd 3+ ions as a strategy for achieving synergistic enhancement of NIR emission in CsPbCl 3 perovskite materials, which could pave the way for the development of highly efficient perovskite LEDs for NIR optoelectronic applications.

Background: The left ventricular dysfunction 36 (LVD-36) questionnaire is considered to be a tool to assess the impact of left ventricle impairment on patients' daily life. This methodological study was aimed to translate and assess the validity and reliability of the Persian draft of the LVD-36 questionnaire among Iranian heart failure (HF) patients., Methods: We recruited stable HF patients who referred to an outpatient heart clinic in Isfahan, Iran. The LVD-36 questionnaire was translated using the forward-backward method. Twenty HF patients were recruited for content validity assessment and were asked to express their opinions about the comprehensibility and meaningfulness of each item. We invited 14 experts to assess validity through content validity index (CVI) and content validity ratio (CVR). Reliability was assessed by Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), with the latter evaluated after invitation of the participants to complete the questionnaire for the second time., Results: The translation process was performed uneventfully without any significant alterations. A total of 150 HF patients were recruited to assess the reliability of the questionnaire in this study (age: 64.6±16 years, males: 58.6%). All items had acceptable CVI and CVR, ranging 0.85-1.00 and 0.57-1.00, respectively. Cronbach's alpha was 0.971. All participants completed the questionnaire for the second time with no missing data. Test-retest reliability revealed an excellent ICC value of 0.981 (95% CI: 0.977-0.985)., Conclusion: The Persian version of the LVD-36 questionnaire is a simple, valid and reliable tool for evaluating the impact of left ventricle impairment on the well-being of Iranian HF patients., (© 2023 The Author(s). Background: Organophosphate pesticides are one of the most extensively applied insecticides in agriculture. These insecticides persist in the environs and thereby cause severe pollution problems. Iron oxide polymer nanocomposites are wastewater remediation agents synthesized by various methods. When compared to chemical processes, green synthesis using plant extract is thought to be more cost- and environmentally-friendly., Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the green synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 @β-Cyclodextrin (Fe 3 O 4 @β-CD) nanoparticles using Ferulago angulata ( F. angulata ) methanol extract. These nanoparticles are loaded on polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibrous nanocomposite along with Ferulago angulata extract (2, 4, and, 6wt %) to produce PLA/Fe 3 O 4 @β-CD/ F. angulata extract nanofibrous nanocomposite as a new nano biosorbent. Furthermore, the antibacterial properties of this compound and its activity in diazinon removal have been evaluated., Materials and Methods: Fe 3 O 4 @β-CD nanoparticles synthesis was performed via co-precipitation method using FeCl 3 .6H 2 O and FeCl 2 .4H 2 O and β-cyclodextrin, and Ferulago angulata extract. Then polylactic acid/ Fe 3 O 4 @β-CD / F. angulate.extract nanofibrous nanocomposite was prepared by the electrospinning method. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the structure of the nanocomposite. The antibacterial activity of this nanocomposite against several fish and human bacterial pathogens, as well as its effectiveness in diazinon elimination, have been evaluated in the sections that follow., Results: The nanocomposite structure demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were produced and put into the polylactic acid matrix with an average particle size of 40 nm. Furthermore, the results showed that this nanocomposite exhibited removal efficiency of diazinon over 80% after 120 minutes under pH=7 and 2.5 gr.L -1 nanocomposite concentration. Also, this structure showed above 70% antibacterial ability against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and 60% antibacterial ability against Streptococcus iniae and Yersinia ruckeri ., Conclusion: Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposite synthesis may be accomplished in a delicate and efficient manner by using Ferulago angulata to produce Fe 3 O 4 @-CD nanoparticles. The stability of the nanoparticles was enhanced by combining Ferulago angulata extract with polylactic acid nanofibers to create an antibacterial homocomposition nanocomposite. Objective: Inflammatory biomarkers are novel tools to assess the prognosis of different cardiovascular diseases. We evaluated the impact of the monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) on clinical outcomes in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD)., Methods: We systematically screened English-language articles in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to 31 August 2022. Relevant articles reporting the MLR and its association with clinical outcomes (major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), coronary artery disease (CAD) severity, mortality, cardiac rupture, subclinical CAD, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) prediction, thin-cap fibroatheroma, no-reflow phenomenon, MLR-related differences in percutaneous coronary intervention, heart failure hospitalization, and depression) in patients with CHD were collected for further analysis., Results: Nineteen articles were selected. The mean MLR was 0.34. A higher MLR was significantly associated with an increased risk of MACE among patients with CHD. The MLR was an independent predictor of MACE in patients with ACS. No significant association was found for CAD severity. A complementary analysis was not performed because of few studies focusing on the other predefined endpoints., Conclusions: The MLR is a simple and widely available tool to predict MACE in patients with CHD. This biomarker can be utilized in emergency settings to prioritize high-risk patients and optimize therapeutic interventions.

Introduction: The World Health Organization recommends regular monitoring of the efficacy of nationally recommended antimalarial drugs. We present the results of studies on the efficacy of recommended antimalarials and molecular markers of artemisinin and partner resistance in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen., Methods: Single-arm prospective studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of artesunate-sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (ASSP) in Afghanistan and Pakistan, artemether-lumefantrine (AL) in all countries, or dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) in Sudan for the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum. The efficacy of chloroquine (CQ) and AL for the treatment of Plasmodium vivax was evaluated in Afghanistan and Somalia, respectively. Patients were treated and monitored for 28 (CQ, ASSP and AL) or 42 (DP) days. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-corrected cure rate and parasite positivity rate at Day 3 were estimated. Mutations in the P. falciparum kelch 13 (Pfk13) gene and amplifications of plasmepsin (Pfpm2) and multidrug resistance-1 (Pfmdr-1) genes were also studied., Results: A total of 1680 (249 for ASSP, 1079 for AL and 352 for DP) falciparum cases were successfully assessed. A PCR-adjusted ASSP cure rate of 100% was observed in Afghanistan and Pakistan. For AL, the cure rate was 100% in all but four sites in Sudan, where cure rates ranged from 92.1% to 98.8%. All but one patient were parasite-free at Day 3. For P. vivax, cure rates were 98.2% for CQ and 100% for AL. None of the samples from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen had a Pfk13 mutation known to be associated with artemisinin resistance. In Sudan, the validated Pfk13 R622I mutation accounted for 53.8% (14/26) of the detected non-synonymous Pfk13 mutations, most of which were repeatedly detected in Gadaref. A prevalence of 2.7% and 9.3% of Pfmdr1 amplification was observed in Pakistan and Yemen, respectively., Conclusion: High efficacy of ASSP, AL and DP in the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum infection and of CQ and AL in the treatment of P. vivax was observed in the respective countries. The repeated detection of a relatively high rate of Pfk13 R622I mutation in Sudan underscores the need for close monitoring of the efficacy of recommended ACTs, parasite clearance rates and Pfk13 mutations in Sudan and beyond. Excessive use of nitrogen (N) pollutes the environment and causes greenhouse gas emissions; however, the application of eco-friendly plant biostimulators (BSs) can overcome these issues. Therefore, this paper aimed to explore the role of diluted bee honey solution (DHS) in attenuating the adverse impacts of N toxicity on Phaseolus vulgaris growth, yield quality, physio-chemical properties, and defense systems. For this purpose, the soil was fertilized with 100, 125, and 150% of the recommended N dose (RND), and the plants were sprayed with 1.5% DHS. Trials were arranged in a two-factor split-plot design (N levels occupied main plots × DH- occupied subplots). Excess N (150% RND) caused a significant decline in plant growth, yield quality, photosynthesis, and antioxidants, while significantly increasing oxidants and oxidative damage [hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), superoxide (O 2 •- ), nitrate, electrolyte leakage (EL), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels]. However, DHS significantly improved antioxidant activities (glutathione and nitrate reductases, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, proline, ascorbate, α-tocopherol, and glutathione) and osmoregulatory levels (soluble protein, glycine betaine, and soluble sugars). Enzyme gene expressions showed the same trend as enzyme activities. Additionally, H 2 O 2 , O 2 •- , EL, MDA, and nitrate levels were significantly declined, reflecting enhanced growth, yield, fruit quality, and photosynthetic efficiency. The results demonstrate that DHS can be used as an eco-friendly approach to overcome the harmful impacts of N toxicity on P. vulgaris plants.

In this study, a new and efficient Rod-like bifunctional Fe-based MOF@CuO nanocomposites (RL BF Fe-based MOF@CuO NC) were synthesized as new and efficient heterogeneous catalyst through a simple method from easily available 1,3,5-benzenetricarbocylic acid linker, nitrate ferric as a source of iron and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles under microwave irradiation. The synthesized nanocatalysts were characterized with different techniques such as Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), mapping, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The RL BF Fe-based MOF@CuO NC had relatively high specific surface area (203 m 2  g -1 ) while exhibiting superparamagnetic properties. The catalytic activity of RL BF Fe-based MOF@CuO NC was explored in a facile and green methodology to prepare diverse N‑amino-2-pyridones by one-pot four component reactions comprising aromatic aldehyde, malononitrile, methyl cyanoacetate and hydrazine hydrate within mild and solvent-free conditions. This protocol enjoys features like providing the final products during low reaction times in excellent yields under solvent-free conditions. The use of easily available and inexpensive reactants for the synthesis of the catalyst, environmental compatibility, low catalyst loading, fast and clean work-up and reusability of catalyst for several cycles with consistent activity are counted as the outstanding features of this procedure., (© 2023. The high chemical and structural stabilities of zirconium (Zr)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in aquatic media make them ideal candidates for wastewater treatment. Rational decoration or Zr-MOFs with functional groups can significantly extend their application in this area. In this work, two well-known Zr-MOFs, UiO-66 and MIL-140-A, were functionalized with dihydrotetrazine function to increase their capability in water treatment. Investigations reveal that these two dihydrotetrazine (DHTZ)-functionalized MOFs, namely UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ and MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ, can be applied as a two-component array for highly selective and sensitive discrimination of arsenate (AsO 4 3- ) and phosphate (PO 4 3- ) ions in water in the presence of other anions. Photoluminescence (PL) tests using UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ show that this MOF can detect these two anions via a ratiometric response, 1.74 for arsenate and 1.84 for phosphate at 2 μM, with superior detection limits (7.2 × 10 -8 M for AsO 4 3- and 4.3 × 10 -8 M for PO 4 3- ). The ratiometric PL response of UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ toward arsenate and phosphate anions arises possibly from the arsenate-dihydrotetrazine hydrogen bonding. In the next step, colorimetric tests using MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ were conducted to discriminate the arsenate from phosphate with a very low detection limit at nanomolar level. This MOF undergoes a yellow-to-pink color change in the presence of arsenate ions, while no color change is observed in the presence of phosphate. This color change is observed through conversion of dihydrotetrazine sites inside the pores of MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ into tetrazine. Altogether, the PL response of UiO-66(Zr)-DHTZ is originated from the hydrogen bond-donating/accepting character of DHTZ function, while the colorimetric response of MIL-140(Zr)-DHTZ is based on the chemical conversion of DHTZ function. This work clearly shows that the decoration of Zr-based MOFs with multicharacter functional groups can develop their application in wastewater treatment as multipurpose platforms.

This study aims to synthesize and evaluate the corrosion inhibition properties of three newly prepared organic compounds based on benzo[h]quinoline hydrazone derivatives. The compounds structure were characterised using FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and Mass spectroscopy. Electrochemical methods, including Potentiodynamic Polarization (PP), Electrochemical Frequency Modulation (EFM), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to evaluate the compounds as corrosion inhibitors in HCl (1.0 M) for carbon steel (CS). Additionally, surface examination techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used to investigate the surface morphology and elemental composition of the CS before and after exposure to the synthesized compounds. The electrochemical measurements showed that compound VII achieved corrosion inhibition efficiency. SEM and EDX analysis further confirmed the creation of a passive film on the CS surface. The ability of cement to withstand harsh conditions is one of its most vital properties, especially in hydrocarbon wells, due to their association with high temperatures, high pressures, acidic components, and erosion. Conventional cement is prone to failure under extreme conditions and is also a costly component in oil and gas wells. This research evaluated the ability of a newly developed cement composed of fly ash reinforced with epoxy resin to withstand the harsh conditions of oil and gas wells. The novel cement was tested for its ability to resist high concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), high salinity, high temperatures, high pressures, gaseous and supercritical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and crude oil. Results showed that the novel cement had an overall excellent ability to perform under extreme conditions. The performance of the cement was a strong function of the fly ash concentration, with an increase in the fly ash concentration resulting in improvement in the cement. For all tests, the highest degradation for the novel cement that occurred was 0.62% after 7 continuous days of exposure, which is considered an extremely low value. This shows that the novel cement has a strong ability to maintain its integrity under extreme conditions.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is perhaps one of the most important events of the 21 st century. Periodontitis is one of the most prevalent diseases of the oral cavity. Due to possible pathways of interaction between these two diseases, we investigated their association., Methods: The study population consisted of hospitalized patients with established COVID-19 diagnoses. Patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 were considered controls, while cases had severe to critical COVID-19. Periodontal examination and serum and saliva sampling were performed for each patient. Relevant medical data were extracted from patients' hospital files., Results: Of the enrolled patients, 122 were included in the statistical analyses. The severity of periodontitis was directly and significantly correlated with the severity of COVID-19 (P < 0.001). Patients with generalized stage III or IV periodontitis displayed an adjusted odds ratio of 4.24 for severe to critical COVID-19. Salivary and serum interleukin-6 levels were significantly associated with COVID-19 severity (P values: 0.002 and 0.004, respectively). Hospitalization length was significantly associated with the severity of periodontitis (P = 0.004). Clinical attachment level and gingival index were associated with increased odds for adverse events (P values: 0.004 and 0.035, respectively), while number of remaining teeth was associated with decreased odds for adverse events (P = 0.023)., Conclusions: This study showed that the severity of periodontitis is associated with the severity of COVID-19. Background: The presence of comorbidities, especially those with a chronic inflammatory nature such as periodontitis, can facilitate COVID-19 progression toward more severe forms. Both of these diseases can affect systemic health and alter hematological test results. In this study, we decided to investigate COVID-19 and periodontitis' possible interaction with these alterations., Methods: Hospitalized patients with a definitive diagnosis of COVID-19 were included. Controls had mild to moderate COVID-19, while cases had severe to critical COVID-19. Periodontal examination was done for each patient. Relevant medical and hematological data were extracted from patient's hospital files., Results: A total of 122 patients entered the final analysis. The minimum white blood cell counts were associated with the severity of periodontitis. The interaction between periodontitis and COVID-19 was associated with increased minimum white blood cell counts and decreased platelet counts. COVID-19 severity was associated with increased venous oxygen saturation, prothrombin time, the maximum partial thromboplastin time, the maximum and average urea, the maximum creatinine, the maximum potassium, and lactate dehydrogenase, and decreased sodium levels., Conclusions: Results of this study showed that several blood parameters were associated with periodontitis, COVID-19, or the interaction between them., (© 2023.
