An understanding of the mechanical behavior of polymeric materials is crucial for making advancements in the applications and efficiency of nanocomposites, and encompasses their service life, load resistance, and overall reliability. The present study focused on the prediction of the mechanical behavior of biopolymeric nanocomposites with nano-clays as the nanoadditives, using a new modeling and simulation method based on Comsol Multiphysics software 6.1. This modeling considered the complex case of flake-shaped nano-clay additives that could form aggregates along the polymeric matrix, varying the nanoadditive thickness, and consequently affecting the resulting mechanical properties of the polymeric nanocomposite. The polymeric matrix investigated was biopolyamide 11 (BIOPA11). Several BIOPA11 samples reinforced with three different contents of nano-clays (0, 3, and 10 wt%), and with three different nano-clay dispersion grades (employing three different extrusion screw configurations) were obtained by the compounding extrusion process. The mechanical behavior of these samples was studied by the experimental tensile test. The experimental results indicate an enhancement of Young's modulus as the nano-clay content was increased from 0 to 10 wt% for the same dispersion grades. In addition, the Young's modulus value increased when the dispersion rate of the nano-clays was improved, showing the highest increase of around 93% for the nanocomposite with 10 wt% nano-clay. A comparison of the modeled mechanical properties and the experimental measurements values was performed to validate the modeling results. The simulated results fit well with the experimental values of Young's modulus.

In recent years, there has been a challenging interest in developing low-cost biopolymeric materials for wastewater treatment. In the present work, new adsorbents, based on different types of chitosan (commercial, commercial chitin-derived chitosan and chitosan synthesized from shrimp shell waste) and inorganic-organic composites have been evaluated for copper ions removal. The efficacy of the synthesis of chitosan-based composite beads has been determined by studying various characteristics using several techniques, including FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, porosimetry (N 2 adsorption), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Adsorption kinetics was performed using different adsorption models to determine the adsorption behavior of the materials in the aqueous media. For all composite beads, regardless of the type of chitosan used, good capacity to remove copper ions from simulated waters was observed (up to 17 mg/g), which proves that the new materials hold potential for heavy metal retention. However, the adsorption efficiency was influenced by the type of chitosan used. Thus, for the series where commercial chitosan (CC) was used, the removal efficiency was approximately 29%; for the series with chitosan obtained from commercial chitin (SC), the removal efficiency was approximately 34%; for the series with chitosan enriched with CaCO 3 (SH), the removal efficiency was approximately 52%.

In this work, a preparative supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) method was first developed to separate a series of chiral compounds evaluated as lactam-based P2RX7 antagonists. Subsequently, high-performance liquid chromatography, SFC, and capillary electrophoresis (CE) were comparatively investigated as QC tools to determine the enantiomeric purity of the separated isomers, including analytical performance and greenness. The screening of the best conditions was carried out in liquid and SFC on the nine derivatives and the amylose tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate)-based chiral stationary phase was found to be highly efficient. The same screening was carried out in CE and very different conditions, either in acidic or basic background electrolyte and different cyclodextrins used as chiral selectors, allowed the separation of six of the nine derivatives. 1-((3,4-Dichlorophenyl)carbamoyl)-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid (compound 1) was chosen as a probe, and its semi-preparative separation by SFC and enantiomeric verification using the three techniques are presented. This present study describes the investigation of new promising hybrid cryogels able to retain high amounts of antibiotics, specifically penicillin G, using chitosan or chitosan-biocellulose blends along with a naturally occurring clay, i.e., kaolin. In order to evaluate and optimize the stability of cryogels, three types of chitosan were used in this study, as follows: (i) commercial chitosan; (ii) chitosan prepared in the laboratory from commercial chitin; and (iii) chitosan prepared in the laboratory from shrimp shells. Biocellulose and kaolin, previously functionalized with an organosilane, were also investigated in terms of their potential to improve the stability of cryogels during prolonged submergence under water. The organophilization and incorporation of the clay into the polymer matrix were confirmed by different characterization techniques (such as FTIR, TGA, SEM), while their stability in time underwater was investigated by swelling measurements. As final proof of their superabsorbent behavior, the cryogels were tested for antibiotic adsorption in batch experiments, in which case cryogels based on chitosan extracted from shrimp shells seem to exhibit excellent adsorption properties for penicillin G.

The problem that has aroused the interest of this review refers to the harmful effect of heavy metals on water sources due to industrial development. In this respect, the review is aimed at achieving a literature survey on the outstanding results and advancements in membranes and membrane technologies for the advanced treatment of heavy metal-loaded wastewaters. Particular attention is given to synthetic polymer membranes, for which the proper choice of precursor material can provide cost benefits while ensuring good decontamination activity. Furthermore, it was also found that better removal efficiencies of heavy metals are achieved by combining the membrane properties with the adsorption properties of inorganic powders. The membrane processes of interest from the perspective of industrial applications are also discussed. A noteworthy conclusion is the fact that the main differences between membranes, which refer mainly to the definition and density of the pore structure, are the prime factors that affect the separation process of heavy metals. Literature studies reveal that applying UF/MF approaches prior to RO leads to a better purification performance.

Chitosan is used in medicine, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture, water treatment, and food due to its superior biocompatibility and biodegradability. Nevertheless, the complex and relatively expensive extraction costs hamper its exploitation and, implicitly, the recycling of marine waste, the most abundant source of chitosan. In the spirit of developing environmental-friendly and cost-effective procedures, the present study describes one method worth consideration to deliver calcium-carbonate-enriched chitosan from shrimp shell waste, which proposes to maintain the native minerals in the structure of chitin in order to improve the thermal stability and processability of chitosan. Therefore, a synthesis protocol was developed starting from an optimized deacetylation procedure using commercial chitin. The ultimate chitosan product from shrimp shells, containing native calcium carbonate, was further compared to commercial chitosan and chitosan synthesized from commercial chitin. Finally, the collected data during the study pointed out that the prospected method succeeded in delivering calcium-carbonate-enriched chitosan with high deacetylation degree (approximately 75%), low molecular weight (Mn ≈ 10.000 g/ mol), a crystallinity above 59 calculated in the (020) plane, high thermal stability (maximum decomposition temperature over 300 °C), and constant viscosity on a wide range of share rates (quasi-Newtonian behavior), becoming a viable candidate for future chitosan-based materials that can expand the application horizon.

The success of a ferroelectric tunnel junction (FTJ) depends on the asymmetry of electron tunneling as given by the tunneling electroresistance (TER) effect. This characteristic is mainly assessed considering three transport mechanisms: direct tunneling, thermionic emission, and Fowler-Nordheim tunneling. Here, by analyzing the effect of temperature on TER, we show that taking into account only these mechanisms may not be enough in order to fully characterize the performance of FTJ devices. We approach the electron tunneling in FTJ with the non-equilibrium Green function (NEGF) method, which is able to overcome the limitations affecting the three mechanisms mentioned above. We bring evidence that the performance of FTJs is also affected by temperature-in a non-trivial way-via resonance (Gamow-Siegert) states, which are present in the electron transmission probability and are usually situated above the barrier. Although the NEGF technique does not provide direct access to the wavefunctions, we show that, for single-band transport, one can find the wavefunction at any given energy and in particular at resonant energies in the system.

In this study, composite hydrogels with interpenetrated polymer networks (IPNs), based on bacterial cellulose (BC) and poly(acrylic acid- co-N , N '-methylene-bis-acrylamide) (PAA), were synthesized by radical polymerization and characterized herein for the first time. Liquid fertilizer (LF) formulations, containing potassium, phosphorus, ammonium oxides and micronutrients, were encapsulated directly into the IPNs of the composite hydrogels during synthesis. Thermal analyses and scanning electron microscopy of control and composite xerogels highlighted the formation of IPNs between BC and PAA. Swelling determinations confirmed the influence of the crosslinker and of the liquid fertilizer concentration upon the density of the IPNs. Further rheology studies and release profiles indicated how the presence of BC and the increase of the crosslinking density of IPNs improved the mechanical strength and the release profile of LF for the innovative composite BC-PAA hydrogels. Results regarding the fertilizer release indicated that the presence of the BC led to a more controlled liberation of the fertilizer proving that this new formulation is potentially viable for application in agricultural practices., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

The boundary integral equation (BIE) method ascertains explicit relations between localized surface phonon and plasmon polariton resonances and the eigenvalues of its associated electrostatic operator. We show that group-theoretical analysis of the Laplace equation can be used to calculate the full set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the electrostatic operator for shapes and shells described by separable coordinate systems. These results not only unify and generalize many existing studies, but also offer us the opportunity to expand the study of phenomena such as cloaking by anomalous localized resonance. Hence, we calculate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of elliptic and circular cylinders. We illustrate the benefits of using the BIE method to interpret recent experiments involving localized surface phonon polariton resonances and the size scaling of plasmon resonances in graphene nanodiscs. Finally, symmetry-based operator analysis can be extended from the electrostatic to the full-wave regime. Thus, bound states of light in the continuum can be studied for shapes beyond spherical configurations.

The dielectric behavior of a linear cluster of two or more living cells connected by tight junctions is analyzed using a spectral method. The polarizability of this system is obtained as an expansion over the eigenmodes of the linear response operator, showing a clear separation of geometry from electric parameters. The eigenmode with the second largest eigenvalue dominates the expansion as the junction between particles tightens, but only when the applied field is aligned with the cluster axis. This effect explains a distinct low-frequency relaxation observed in the impedance spectrum of a suspension of linear clusters.

The case which we present is the most recent of a personal statistics on 10 cardiopericardiac plagues and the decision to be related separately was requested by some particularities with special points of view: a) anatomo-lesional, transfixiant plague with the lost of the top of the heart and the section of the left coronary artery, left diaphragmatic penetrating plague, left hepatic transfixiant plague, penetrating gastric plague. b) some aspects of surgery techniques. c) the evolution of acute septic complications (mediastinopleuroparietal suppuration) which has requested special care and 97 days of hospitalisation. d) healing, good evolution after 14 months from the accident.

The measurement of solar UV radiation is usually performed using physical devices like photodiodes or photomultipliers or with chemical substances (actinometry). The application of biological material such as microorganisms for this purpose has gained increasing importance in the last few years. The microorganisms may be dried and spread on a flat surface or they may be in aqueous suspensions contained in UV-transparent vessels. If the measurements are done on flat surfaces, the irradiance weighted by the action spectrum of the dried microorganism used is the result of the measurement. If aqueous suspensions of microorganisms are used, contained for instance in spherical vessels, the fluence weighted by the action spectrum of the microorganisms in the aqueous suspension is the result. A problem of this method of measurement can be that inside the vessel the distribution of UV radiation is usually not homogeneous, causing distributions of fluences among the irradiated microorganisms, which may result in variation of the results depending on the mixing characteristics of the suspension during irradiation.

The influence of SDS upon the molecular properties of proflavine (3,6-diaminoacridine), acridine yellow (2,7-dimethyl-3,6-diaminoacridine) and methylene blue (3,7-bis-dimethylamino-phenothiazine) was studied comparatively to their properties in that of aqueous media. The absorption and emission spectra of the three dyes in SDS aqueous solution (1-100 mmol/l) were recorded. The spectroscopic data also allowed the evaluation of the critical micellization concentration (CMC), acidity constants in fundamental (pk(a)) and excited (pK(*)(a)) states, and lifetimes of excited singlet states.

Reflections from instruments in the surgical field involving the CO2 laser beam present a serious ocular hazard. In addition to the use of plastic or glass protective eyewear, this hazard can be minimized by utilizing anodized instruments and recognizing the specific distances at which various reflections are no longer hazardous depending upon certain variables, including laser output wattage, emergent beam lengths, and surface characteristics of the reflecting instruments.
