The refractive index (RI) of biological tissues is a fundamental material parameter that characterizes how light interacts with tissues, making accurate measurement of RI crucial for biomedical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. A Janus sensor (JBS) is designed in this paper, and the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is used to detect subtle changes in RI in biological tissues. The asymmetric arrangement of the dielectric layers breaks spatial parity symmetry, resulting in significantly different PSHE displacements during the forward and backward propagation of electromagnetic waves, thereby realizing the Janus effect. The designed JBS can detect the RI range of 1.3~1.55 RIU when electromagnetic waves are incident along the + z -axis, with a sensitivity of 96.29°/refractive index unit (RIU). In the reverse direction, blood glucose concentrations are identified by the JBS, achieving a sensitivity of 18.30°/RIU. Detecting different RI range from forward and backward scales not only overcomes the limitation that single-scale sensors can only detect a single RI range, but also provides new insights and applications for optical biological detection through high-sensitivity, label-free and non-contact detection.

This study presents a novel method leveraging surface wave-assisted photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) to construct physical unclonable functions (PUFs). PUFs exploit inherent physical variations to generate unique Challenge-Response pairs, which are critical for hardware security and arise from manufacturing discrepancies, device characteristics, or timing deviations. We explore PSHE generation-based PUF design, expanding existing design possibilities. With recent applications in precise sensing and computing, PSHE offers promising performance metrics for our proposed PUFs, including an inter-Hamming distance of 47.50% , an average proportion of unique responses of 62.5% , and a Pearson correlation coefficient of - 0.198. The PUF token demonstrates robustness to simulated noise. Additionally, we evaluate security using a machine learning-based attack model, employing a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) regression model with a randomized search method. The average accuracy of successful attack prediction is 9.70% for the selected dataset. Recently there is a report of the experimental signatures of a fractional quantum spin hall (FQSH) state at hole filling n=3 in a twisted MoTe_{2} bilayer. Previous theories of FQSH phases simply considered a decoupled pair of a fractional quantum Hall phase and its time reversal partner. Here, we show the first construction of an FQSH phase beyond the decoupling picture. We consider a pair of half-filled C=±1 Chern bands in the two valleys, similar to the well-studied quantum Hall bilayer, but now with opposite chiralities. Because of the strong intervalley repulsion, we expect a charge gap to open with low-energy physics dominated by the neutral intervalley excitons. However, the presence of an effective "flux" frustrates exciton condensation by proliferating vortices. Here, we construct a vortex liquid of excitons dubbed a vortex spin liquid, formed from exciton pairing of the composite fermions in the decoupled composite Fermi liquid phase. This insulator is a quantum spin liquid with gapless spin excitations carried by the flux of an emergent U(1) gauge field. Additionally, there exist neutral and spinless Fermi surfaces formed by fermionic vortices of a nearby intervalley-coherent order. Unlike a conventional Mott insulator, the vortex spin liquid phase also exhibits a quantized FQSH effect with gapless helical charge modes along the edge. Our work demonstrates the possibility of nontrivial FQSH phases and provides predictions to detect them in future experiments.

The continuous pursuit of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials with intriguing properties has been a driving force in advancing various scientific and technological frontiers. Here, based on a wide range of first-principles calculations, we predicted the existence of a novel family of 2D transition-metal oxides, the Ti 3 O M O enes (MXene-like 2D transition oxides), and determined its distinctive electronic and topological properties. A pair of 2D antiferromagnetic (AFM) Dirac points precisely located at the Fermi level in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is observed in the 1T-Ti 3 O monolayer. Moreover, upon halogenation on a bare monolayer, 1T-Ti 3 OCl 3 and 1T-Ti 3 OBr 3 monolayers display the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect with nontrivial helical edge states within the gapless bulk states. Specifically, single layer 1T-Ti 3 OF 3 behaves as an indirect semiconductor with a gap of 0.81 eV, exhibiting a strong light-harvesting capability. The indirect-gap feature can be switched to a direct one by only exerting a small tensile strain of 1.5%. These findings broaden emerging phenomena in a rich family of M O enes, suggesting a novel platform for the development of next-generation nanodevices.

A comprehensive exploration of the intriguing phenomena known as the spin Nernst effect (SNE) and the spin Hall effect (SHE) within the context of nonmagnetic strong topological insulatorZnCu2SnSe4, has been carried out employing first-principles calculations. Our theoretical calculations unveil significantly large intrinsic spin Nernst conductivity (SNC) and spin Hall conductivity (SHC) in the bulk topological insulatorZnCu2SnSe4. Delving deeper into the intricacies of our findings, we elucidate how the inverted band order in the topological materials drastically influences the spin Berry curvature, consequently exerting a profound impact on SHC and SNC. Detailed analyses reveal that the contribution from the bulk to the generation of pure spin current in a topological insulator is comparable to that of a surface. This underscores the potential role of topological insulators in the development of spin-switching devices. We present compelling evidence thatZnCu2SnSe4holds immense promise as an optimal candidate for the generation of pure spin currents, achieved through the application of both thermal gradients and electric fields. Recently, a significant amount of attention has been attracted toward a third classification of magnetism, altermagnetism, due to the unique physical properties of altermagnetic materials, which are compensated collinear antiferromagnets that host time-reversal symmetry-breaking phenomena like a ferromagnet. In an altermagnetic material, through the nonrelativistic altermagnetic spin-splitting effect (ASSE), a transverse spin current is generated upon charge current injection. However, it is very challenging to experimentally establish the ASSE since it is inevitably mixed with the spin Hall effect due to the relativistic spin-orbit coupling of the material. Additionally, the dependence on the hard-to-probe and hard-to-control Néel vectors makes it even more difficult to observe and establish the ASSE. In this Letter, we utilize the thermal spin injection from the ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet and detect an inverse altermagnetic spin-splitting effect (IASSE) in the high-quality epitaxial altermagnetic RuO_{2} thin films. We observe an opposite sign for the spin-to-charge conversion through the IASSE compared to the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). The efficiency of the IASSE is approximately 70% of the ISHE in RuO_{2}. Moreover, we demonstrate that the ASSE or IASSE effect is observable only when the Néel vectors are well aligned. By modifying the Néel vector domains via RuO_{2} crystallinity, we study the ASSE or IASSE unequivocally and quantitatively. Our Letter provides significant insight into the spin-splitting effect in altermagnetic materials.

Utilizing spin pumping, we present a comparative study of the spin-charge conversion in RuO_{2}(101) and RuO_{2}(110) films. RuO_{2}(101) shows a robust in-plane crystal-axis dependence, whereas RuO_{2}(110) exhibits an isotropic but stronger one. Symmetry-based analysis and first-principles calculations reveal that the spin-charge conversion in RuO_{2}(110) originates from the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) due to nodal lines splitting. In RuO_{2}(101), the ISHE also dominates although the inverse spin splitting effect (ISSE) may coexist. These findings, in sharp contrast to previously attributed ISSE, are further corroborated by the reciprocal relation between the spin pumping and the spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements.

Coupling the spin Hall effect with novel degrees of freedom of electrons is central to the rich phenomena observed in condensed-matter physics. Here, using symmetry analysis and a low-energy k·p model, we report the sliding ferroelectricity engineered coupling between spin Hall effect and emerging layertronics, thereby generating the layer spin Hall effect (LSHE), in a 2D lattice. The physics is rooted in a pair of T -symmetry connected valleys, which experience spin splitting accompanied by large Berry curvature under spin-orbit coupling. The interaction between the out-of-plane ferroelectricity and electronic properties gives rise to the layer-locked Berry curvature and thus layer-polarized spin Hall effect (LP-SHE) in the bilayers. Such LP-SHE is strongly coupled with sliding ferroelectricity, enabling it to be ferroelectrically reversible. Using first-principles calculations, the mechanism is further demonstrated in a series of real bilayer systems, including MoS 2 , MoTe 2 , WSe 2 , MoSi 2 P 4 , and MoSi 2 As 4 . These phenomena and insights open a new direction for spin Hall effect.

We experimentally investigate the charge-spin interconversion by introducing a lighter impurity, namely nitrogen (N) into Pt by varying the nitrogen gas flow rate, Q from 0 to 20%, and studying the Onsager reciprocity of spin Hall effect (SHE) via complementary methods of spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance and spin-pumping inverse SHE measurements, respectively. We notice a reduction in the crystalline nature of Pt upon nitrogen incorporation. We observe the influence of extrinsic side-jump scattering induced SHE by measuring the spin Hall efficiency,θSHin a wide temperature range from 10 to 296 K. Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators are two-dimensional electronic materials that have a bulk band gap similar to an ordinary insulator but have topologically protected pairs of edge modes of opposite chiralities 1-6 . So far, experimental studies have found only integer QSH insulators with counter-propagating up-spins and down-spins at each edge leading to a quantized conductance G 0  = e 2 /h (with e and h denoting the electron charge and Planck's constant, respectively) 7-14 . Here we report transport evidence of a fractional QSH insulator in 2.1° twisted bilayer MoTe 2 , which supports spin-S z conservation and flat spin-contrasting Chern bands 15,16 . At filling factor ν = 3 of the moiré valence bands, each edge contributes a conductance 3 2 G 0 with zero anomalous Hall conductivity. The state is probably a time-reversal pair of the even-denominator 3/2-fractional Chern insulators. Furthermore, at ν = 2, 4 and 6, we observe a single, double and triple QSH insulator with each edge contributing a conductance G 0 , 2G 0 and 3G 0 , respectively. Our results open up the possibility of realizing time-reversal symmetric non-abelian anyons and other unexpected topological phases in highly tunable moiré materials 17-19 ., (© 2024. The recently discovered Van der Waals antiferromagnets have suffered from the lack of a comprehensive method to study their magnetic properties. Here, we propose an ac intrinsic magnon spin Hall current driven by surface acoustic waves as a novel probe for such antiferromagnets. Our results pave the way towards mechanical detection and manipulation of the magnetic order in two-dimensional antiferromagnets. Furthermore, they will overcome the difficulties with weak magnetic responses inherent in the use of antiferromagnets and hence provide a building block for future antiferromagnetic spintronics.

We use a single-photon detector to detect the spin Hall effect of light (SHEL) of a quasi-single-photon beam obtained in this Letter. The physics of the spin Hall effect and its quantum weak measurement method with a dimensionless pointer are elucidated through particle number representation. Our weak measurement scheme obviates the necessity of high-resolution single-photon array detectors. Consequently, we have successfully observed the spin Hall effect within a 20 ns temporal window using a position-resolution-independent single-photon detector with remarkably low-noise levels. The weak measurement of the dimensionless pointer presented in this Letter boosts both the detection accuracy and the response speed of the photonics spin Hall effect, thereby contributing significantly to fundamental theoretical research in spin photonics and precise measurements of physical property parameters.

When a spin-splitting field is introduced to a thin film superconductor, the spin currents polarized along the field couples to energy currents that can only decay via inelastic scattering. We study spin and energy injection into such a superconductor where spin-orbit impurity scattering yields inverse spin-Hall and spin-swapping currents. We show that the combined presence of a spin-splitting field, superconductivity, and inelastic scattering gives rise to a strong enhancement of the ordinary inverse spin-Hall effect, as well as unique inverse spin-Hall and spin-swapping signals orders of magnitude stronger than the ordinary inverse spin-Hall signal. These can be completely controlled by the orientation of the spin-splitting field, resulting in a long-range charge and spin accumulations detectable much further from the injector than in the normal state. While the enhanced inverse spin-Hall signals offer a major improvement in spin detection sensitivity, the unique spin-swap signals can be utilized for designing devices where both the spin and current directions are controlled and altered throughout the geometry.

Spin current generation from charge current in nonmagnetic materials promises an energy-efficient scheme for manipulating magnetization in spintronic devices. In some asymmetric two-dimensional (2D) materials, the Rashba and valley effects coexist owing to strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which induces the spin Hall effect due to spin-momentum locking of both effects. Herein, we propose a new Janus structure MoSiAs 2 Se with both valley physics and the Rashba effect and reveal an effective way to modulate the properties of this structure. The results demonstrated that applying an external electric field is an effective means to modulating the electronic properties of MoSiAs 2 Se, leading to both type I-II phase transitions and semiconductor-metal phase transitions. Furthermore, the coexistence of the Rashba and valley effects in monolayer MoSiAs 2 Se contributes to the spin Hall effect (SHE). The magnitude and direction of spin Hall conductivity can also be manipulated with an out-of-plane electric field. Our results enrich the physics and materials of the Rashba and valley systems, opening new opportunities for the applications of 2D Janus materials in spintronic devices.

An exciton-polariton condensate is a hybrid light-matter state in the quantum fluid phase. The photonic component endows it with characters of spin, as represented by circular polarization. Spin-polarization can form stochastically for quasi-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensates at parallel momentum vector k|| ∼ 0 from bifurcation or deterministically for propagating condensates at k|| > 0 from the optical spin-Hall effect (OSHE). Here, we report deterministic spin-polarization in exciton-polariton condensates at k|| ∼ 0 in microcavities containing methylammonium lead bromide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystals under non-resonant and linearly polarized excitation. We observe two energetically split condensates with opposite circular polarizations and attribute this observation to the presence of strong birefringence, which introduces a large OSHE at k|| ∼ 0 and pins the condensates in a particular spin state. Such spin-polarized exciton-polariton condensates may serve not only as circularly polarized laser sources but also as effective alternatives to ultracold atom Bose-Einstein condensates in quantum simulators of many-body spin-orbit coupling processes., (© 2024 Author(s). To the best of our knowledge, a novel tunable photonic spin Hall effect is proposed based on a pair of liquid crystal Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) lenses. Owing to the spin-dependent geometric phases, a PB lens focus or defocus the incident light field according to its spin angular momentum. By cascading two PB lenses with a small gap, the focus and defocus effects can be suppressed, and the transmitted light fields with opposite spin will be deflected toward opposite directions when the two PB lenses have a relative lateral displacement. The deflection angles vary linearly with the displacements, thus double-lines two-dimensional continuous beam scanning is achieved with a scanning angle of 39 o  × 39° and a beam diverging angle of 0.028 o  × 0.028°. The scanning beam is used to write different patterns on a 200 nm thick gold film. We believe this beam scanning system can find wide applications ranging from laser processing, Lidar, particle manipulation, to free space optical communications.

2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, are ideal platforms for spin-to-charge conversion (SCC) as they possess strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), reduced dimensionality and crystal symmetries as well as tuneable band structure, compared to metallic structures. Moreover, SCC can be tuned with the number of layers, electric field, or strain. Here, SCC in epitaxially grown 2D PtSe 2 by THz spintronic emission is studied since its 1T crystal symmetry and strong SOC favor SCC. High quality of as-grown PtSe 2 layers is demonstrated, followed by in situ ferromagnet deposition by sputtering that leaves the PtSe 2 unaffected, resulting in well-defined clean interfaces as evidenced with extensive characterization. Through this atomic growth control and using THz spintronic emission, the unique thickness-dependent electronic structure of PtSe 2 allows the control of SCC. Indeed, the transition from the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE) in 1-3 monolayers (ML) to the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in multilayers (>3 ML) of PtSe 2 enabling the extraction of the perpendicular spin diffusion length and relative strength of IREE and ISHE is demonstrated. This band structure flexibility makes PtSe 2 an ideal candidate to explore the underlying mechanisms and engineering of the SCC as well as for the development of tuneable THz spintronic emitters., (© 2024 The Authors. The spin Hall effect (SHE), in which an electrical current generates a transverse spin current, plays an important role in spintronics for the generation and manipulation of spin-polarized electrons. The phenomenon originates from spin-orbit coupling. In general, stronger spin-orbit coupling favours larger SHEs but shorter spin relaxation times and diffusion lengths. However, correlated magnetic materials often do not support large SHEs. Achieving large SHEs, long-range spin transport and magnetism simultaneously in a single material is attractive for spintronics applications but has remained a challenge. Here we demonstrate a giant intrinsic SHE coexisting with ferromagnetism in AB-stacked MoTe 2 /WSe 2 moiré bilayers by direct magneto-optical imaging. Under moderate electrical currents with density <1 A m -1 , we observe spin accumulation on transverse sample edges that nearly saturates the spin density. We also demonstrate long-range spin Hall transport and efficient non-local spin accumulation that is limited only by the device size (about 10 µm). The gate dependence shows that the giant SHE occurs only near the interaction-driven Chern insulating state. At low temperatures, it emerges after the quantum anomalous Hall breakdown. Two linked gear wheels in a micromachine can be simultaneously rotated in opposite directions by using a laser beam that has in its section areas the spin angular momentum (SAM) of the opposite sign. However, for instance, a cylindrical vector beam has zero SAM in the focus. We alter a cylindrical vector beam so as to generate areas in its focus where the SAM is of opposite signs. The first alteration is adding to the cylindrical vector beam a linearly polarized beam. Thus, we study superposition of two rotationally symmetric beams: those with cylindrical and linear polarization. We obtain an expression for the SAM and prove two of its properties. The first property is that changing superposition coefficients does not change the shape of the SAM density distribution, whereas the intensity changes. The second property is that maximal SAM density is achieved when both beams in the superposition have the same energy. The second perturbation is adding a spatial carrier frequency. We study the SAM density of a cylindrical vector beam with a spatial carrier frequency. Due to periodic modulation, upon propagation in space, such a beam is split into two beams, having left and right elliptic polarization. Thus, in the beam transverse section, areas with the spin of different signs are separated in space, which is a manifestation of the spin Hall effect. We demonstrate that such light beams can be generated by metasurfaces, with the transmittance depending periodically on one coordinate.

Nodal-line semimetals, characterized by Dirac-like crossings along one dimensional k -space lines, represent a unique class of topological materials. In this study, we investigate the intriguing properties of room-temperature antiferromagneticMnC4and its nodal-line features both with and without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In the absence of SOC, we identify a doubly degenerate Dirac-nodal line, robustly protected by a combination of time-reversal, mirror, and partial-translation symmetries. Remarkably, this nodal line withstands various external perturbations, including isotropic and anisotropic strain, and torsional deformations, due to the ionic-like bonding between Mn atoms and C clusters. With the inclusion of SOC, we observe a distinctive quasi-Dirac-nodal line that emerges due to the interplay between antiferromagnetism and SOC-induced spin-rotation symmetry breaking. Finally, we observed a robust spin Hall conductivity that aligns with the energy range where the quasi-nodal line appears. This study presents a compelling example of a robust symmetry-protected Dirac-nodal line antiferromagnetic monolayer, which has potential for applications in next-generation spintronic devices., (© 2024 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Optical differential operation is the basic principle of optical image edge detection, which has the advantages of high efficiency, simple structure and markerless compared with the traditional digital image processing methods. In this paper, we propose an optical differential operation with high contrast based on the photonic spin Hall effect in a Weyl semimetal, which enables to switch between one- and two-dimensional edge detection. Due to the unique optical and electrical properties of the Weyl semimetal, a transport model for the differential operation is established, which is closely related to the beam shifts. By tuning the incidence conditions, we effectively manipulate the in-plane and transverse shifts to switch differential operations between one and two dimensions. The contrast of the differential operation is further regulated by changing the physical parameters of the Weyl semimetal, and can be improved by two orders of magnitude compared to the conventional differentiator. This study provides new possibilities in edge detection and image processing owing to the advantages of switchable dimension and high contrast.

It is widely recognized that light exhibits a wave-particle duality. However, the explanation for the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) primarily relies on the wave nature of light as dictated by Maxwell's Equations. There is a lack of exploration into the particle nature of light in this regard. In this context, we offer a fresh interpretation of the PSHE from the perspective of particle nature of light. For the out-of-plane PSHE, the spin shifts result from the macroscopic manifestation of the conservation of spin-orbital angular momentum of one photon. For the in-plane PSHE, the spin shifts arise from the spread of in-plane wavevector. Based on the wave nature of light, we also obtain the same spin shifts, confirming the consistency of the wave-particle duality of light. Furthermore, we find that the spin shifts of the PSHE are not the overall displacement of photons with the same handedness, but the outcome of coherent superposition among photons of the same handedness. These discoveries further enhance our comprehension of the fundamental nature of the PSHE.

The spin Hall effect (SHE) allows efficient generation of spin polarization or spin current through charge current and plays a crucial role in the development of spintronics. While SHE typically occurs in non-magnetic materials and is time-reversal even, exploring time-reversal-odd (T-odd) SHE, which couples SHE to magnetization in ferromagnetic materials, offers a new charge-spin conversion mechanism with new functionalities. Here, we report the observation of giant T-odd SHE in Fe 3 GeTe 2 /MoTe 2 van der Waals heterostructure, representing a previously unidentified interfacial magnetic spin Hall effect (interfacial-MSHE). Through rigorous symmetry analysis and theoretical calculations, we attribute the interfacial-MSHE to a symmetry-breaking induced spin current dipole at the vdW interface. Furthermore, we show that this linear effect can be used for implementing multiply-accumulate operations and binary convolutional neural networks with cascaded multi-terminal devices. The spin Hall effect (SHE) can generate a pure spin current by an electric current, which is promisingly used to electrically control magnetization. To reduce the power consumption of this control, a giant spin Hall angle (SHA) in the SHE is desired in low-resistivity systems for practical applications. Here, critical spin fluctuation near the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition in chromium (Cr) is proven to be an effective mechanism for creating an additional part of the SHE, named the fluctuation spin Hall effect. The SHA is significantly enhanced when the temperature approaches the Néel temperature ( T N . This value is higher than the room-temperature value by 153% and leads to a low normalized power consumption among known spin-orbit torque materials. This study demonstrates the critical spin fluctuation as a prospective way to increase the SHA and enriches the AFM material candidates for spin-orbitronic devices.T N . The photonic spin Hall effect, referring to the spatial separation of photons with opposite spins due to spin-orbit interactions, has enabled potential for various spin-sensitive applications and devices. Here, using scattering-type near-field scanning optical microscopy, we observe spin-orbit interactions introduced by a subwavelength semiring antenna integrated in a plasmonic circuit. Clear evidence of unidirectional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons is obtained by direct comparison of the amplitude- and phase-resolved near-field maps of the plasmonic nanocircuit under excitation with photons of opposite spin states coupled to a plasmonic nanoantenna. We present details of the antenna design and experimental methods to investigate the spatial variation of complex electromagnetic fields in a spin-sensitive plasmonic circuit. The reported findings offer valuable insights into the generation, characterization, and application of the photonic spin Hall effect in photonic integrated circuits for future and emerging spin-selective nanophotonic systems.

Studying the mechanisms of the spin Hall effect (SHE) is essential for the fundamental understanding of spintronic physics. By now, despite the intensive studies of SHE on heavy metal (HM)/metallic magnet heterostructures, the SHE on HM/ferrimagnetic insulator (FMI) heterostructures still remains elusive. Here, we study the mechanism of SHE in the Pt/Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) heterostructure. We first tune the crystallinity and resistivity of Pt by an annealing method, and then study the spin-orbit torque (SOT) in the tuned-Pt/TmIG devices. The SOT generation efficiency per unit electric field and spin Hall angle were obtained, which are insensitive to the annealing temperature. We further demonstrate that the intrinsic contribution in the moderately dirty regime is responsible for the SHE in our Pt/TmIG bilayer. Our study provides an important piece of information for the SHE in FMI-based spintronic physics.

In this paper, we propose a precision method to measure the chiroptical signal of Artemisinin solutions using the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) on the Ce:YIG-YIG-SiO 2 structure as a probe. The effects of transmission distance, incident angles, applied magnetic fields of different directions, and beam waist of light on the weak measurement system are analytically investigated through simulations. It is found that decreasing the beam waist of the incident spot, increasing the incident angle, increasing the transmission distance, and adding a longitudinal magnetic field is conducive to enhancing the amplification transverse shift of PSHE, thus the measurement sensitivity is greatly improved. Based on the optimal weak measurement scheme, the detection limit for concentration measurement of artemisinin based on optical rotatory (OR) was reduced to 0.05 mg/ml. The measurement precision of the OR angle has been improved to 10 -7 rad.

The traditional law of refraction defines the incidence plane as the plane including the incident beam wavevector and the surface normal vector at the interface of two different optical media. The optical spin Hall effect (OSHE) refers to the spin-dependent transverse shift of the refracted beam perpendicular to the incidence plane. In this Letter, we demonstrate that OSHE in out-of-plane refraction can be detected and visualized in the far-field, even at small and normal incidence angles. The extent of spin-dependent photon spatial separation induced by anomalous refraction can be customized by manipulating the 2D additive momentum from the metasurface. Experimental visualization of the OSHE confirms the existence of a new, to the best of our knowledge, plane to describe the OSHE of the refracted beam outside the incidence plane.

Since the enhancement of the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is limited around the Brewster's angle, the scientific problem of how to extend the range of incident angles and to keep them unidirectional for the enhanced PSHE remains open. Here, we propose an effective method to achieve the ultrawide angle and unidirectional enhancement of PSHE via the omnidirectional Brewster's effect in a tilted uniaxial crystal. By properly setting the permittivity and the optical axial angle of the uniaxial crystal, the omnidirectional Brewster's effect can be obtained to realize an ultrawide angle enhancement of the PSHE. Then, by appropriately deviating the optical axial angle, the ultrawide enhancement of the PSHE can be achieved within the maximum incident angle range of 60° with unchanged direction. These findings inspire an unprecedented route to facilitate the applications in precision measurement and spin-dependent devices.

By inserting the monolayer graphene between the balanced gain and loss layers, the graphene-incorporated quasi-parity-time (PT) symmetric structure is established. In this contribution, the introduction of graphene provides a new degree of freedom to manipulate the optical performance as well as the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE). The coherent perfect absorption (CPA)-laser mode still remains in the graphene-incorporated quasi-PT symmetric system, and the spin shift of transmitted light can be significantly enhanced (i.e., up to its upper limitation) in the vicinity of CPA-laser mode, which is 18 times larger than the value of a simple PT symmetric structure. In addition, the excitation of the CPA-laser mode and the huge spin shift of transmitted light can be achieved with the thin gain/loss layers, which will be conducive to the miniaturization of nanophotonic devices based on the photonic SHE in the future.

When a magnon passes through two-dimensional magnetic textures, it will experience a fictitious magnetic field originating from the 3×3 skew-symmetric gauge fields. To date, only one of the three independent components of the gauge fields has been found to play a role in generating the fictitious magnetic field, while the other two are perfectly hidden. In this Letter, we show that they are concealed in the nonlinear magnon transport in magnetic textures. Without loss of generality, we theoretically study the nonlinear magnon-skyrmion interaction in antiferromagnets. By analyzing the scattering features of three-magnon processes between the circularly polarized incident magnon and breathing skyrmion, we predict a giant Hall angle of both the confluence and splitting modes. Furthermore, we find that the Hall angle reverses its sign when one switches the handedness of the incident magnons. We dub this the nonlinear topological magnon spin Hall effect. Our findings are deeply rooted in the bosonic nature of magnons that the particle number is not conserved, which has no counterpart in low-energy fermionic systems and may open the door for probing gauge fields by nonlinear means.

The multi-focus metalens can couple the light into multiple channels in optical interconnections, which is beneficial to the development of planar, miniaturized, and integrated components. We propose broadband photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) driven multi-focus metalenses, in which each nanobrick plays a positive role for all focal points. Three PSHE driven metalenses with four, six, and eight focal points have been designed and investigated, respectively. Under the incidences of left-/right-handed circularly polarized (LCP/RCP) light, these metalenses can generate regularly distributed two, three, and four RCP/LCP focal points, respectively. The uniformity of the focusing intensity has been investigated in detail by designing an additional four six-focus metalenses with different focus distributions. The uniqueness of these metalenses makes this design philosophy very attractive for applications in spin photonics, compact polarization detection, multi-imaging systems, and information processing systems.

In this study, we present a theoretical study of the quantum spin Hall effect in InN/InGaN coupled multiple quantum wells with the individual well widths equal to two atomic monolayers. We consider triple and quadruple quantum wells in which the In content in the interwell barriers is greater than or equal to the In content in the external barriers. To calculate the electronic subbands in these nanostructures, we use the eight-band k∙p Hamiltonian, assuming that the effective spin-orbit interaction in InN is negative, which represents the worst-case scenario for achieving a two-dimensional topological insulator. For triple quantum wells, we find that when the In contents of the external and interwell barriers are the same and the widths of the internal barriers are equal to two monolayers, a topological insulator with a bulk energy gap of 0.25 meV can appear. Increasing the In content in the interwell barriers leads to a significant increase in the bulk energy gap of the topological insulator, reaching about 0.8 meV. In these structures, the topological insulator can be achieved when the In content in the external barriers is about 0.64, causing relatively low strain in quantum wells and making the epitaxial growth of these structures within the range of current technology. Using the effective 2D Hamiltonian, we study the edge states in strip structures containing topological triple quantum wells. We demonstrate that the opening of the gap in the spectrum of the edge states caused by decreasing the width of the strip has an oscillatory character regardless of whether the pseudospin-mixing elements of the effective Hamiltonian are omitted or taken into account. The strength of the finite size effect in these structures is several times smaller than that in HgTe/HgCdTe and InAs/GaSb/AlSb topological insulators. Therefore, its influence on the quantum spin Hall effect is negligible in strips with a width larger than 150 nm, unless the temperature at which electron transport is measured is less than 1 mK. In the case of quadruple quantum wells, we find the topological insulator phase only when the In content in the interwell barriers is larger than in the external barriers. We show that in these structures, a topological insulator with a bulk energy gap of 0.038 meV can be achieved when the In content in the external barriers is about 0.75. Since this value of the bulk energy gap is very small, quadruple quantum wells are less useful for realizing a measurable quantum spin Hall system, but they are still attractive for achieving a topological phase transition and a nonlocal topological semimetal phase.

Elements of micromachines can be driven by light, including structured light with phase and/or polarization singularities. We investigate here a paraxial vector Gaussian beam with an infinite number of polarization singularities residing evenly on a straight line. The intensity distribution is derived analytically and the polarization singularities are shown to exist only in the initial plane and in the far field. The azimuthal angle of the polarization singularities is shown to increase in the far field by π/2. We obtain the longitudinal component of the spin angular momentum (SAM) density and show that it is independent of the azimuthal angle of the polarization singularities. Upon propagation in free space, an infinite number of C-points is generated, where polarization is circular. We show that the SAM density distribution has a shape of four spots, two with left and two with right elliptic polarization. The distance to the transverse plane with the maximal SAM density decreases with decreasing distance between the polarization singularities in the initial plane. Generating such alternating areas with positive and negative SAM density, despite linear polarization in the initial plane, manifests the optical spin Hall effect. Application areas of the obtained results include designing micromachines with optically driven elements.

We report the observation of the isotropic spin Hall effect in a ferromagnet. We show that the spin Hall effect in an epitaxially grown Fe&#95;{3}Si generates a sizable spin current with a spin direction that is noncollinear with the magnetization. Furthermore, we find that the spin Hall current is independent of the relative orientation between its spin direction and the magnetization; the spin Hall effect is isotropic. This observation demonstrates that the intrinsically generated transverse spin component is protected from dephasing, providing fundamental insights into the generation and transport of spin currents in ferromagnets.

In this paper, the sub-wavelength transverse displacement of photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is significantly enhanced by the surface exciton polariton (SEP) for application in gas sensing. The transverse displacement of 14.4 times the wavelength of incident light is achieved with the SEP enhanced PSHE, which is about 3 times that of surface plasmon resonance enhanced PSHE. A gas sensor based on SEP enhanced PSHE is proposed for the detection of SO 2 , and the refractive index sensitivity of 6320.4 µm/RIU is obtained in the refractive index range from 1.00027281 to 1.00095981. These results undoubtedly demonstrate SEP to be a promising mechanism for PSHE enhancement, and open up new opportunities for highly sensitive gas sensing, biosensing, and chemical sensing.

Multiple works suggest the possibility of classification of quantum spin Hall effect with magnetic flux tubes, which cause separation of spin and charge degrees of freedom and pumping of spin or Kramers-pair. However, the proof of principle demonstration of spin-charge separation is yet to be accomplished for realistic, ab initio band structures of spin-orbit-coupled materials, lacking spin-conservation law. In this work, we perform thought experiments with magnetic flux tubes on [Formula: see text]-bismuthene, and demonstrate spin-charge separation, and quantized pumping of spin for three insulating states, that can be accessed by tuning filling fractions. With a combined analysis of momentum-space topology and real-space response, we identify important role of bands supporting even integer invariants, which cannot be addressed with symmetry-based indicators. Our work sets a new standard for the computational diagnosis of two-dimensional, quantum spin-Hall materials by going beyond the [Formula: see text] paradigm and providing an avenue for precise determination of the bulk invariant through computation of quantized, real-space response., (© 2023. Metasurface-based research with phase-change materials has been a prominent and rapidly developing research field that has drawn considerable attention in recent years. In this paper, we proposed a kind of tunable metasurface based on the simplest metal-insulator-metal structure, which can be realized by the mutual transformation of insulating and metallic states of vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) and can realize the functional switching of photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE), absorption and beam deflection at the same terahertz frequency. When VO 2 is insulating, combined with the geometric phase, the metasurface can realize PSHE. A normal incident linear polarized wave will be split into two spin-polarized reflection beams traveling in two off-normal directions. When VO 2 is in the metal state, the designed metasurface can be used as a wave absorber and a deflector, which will completely absorb LCP waves, while the reflected amplitude of RCP waves is 0.828 and deflects. Our design only consists of one layer of artificial structure with two materials and is easy to realize in the experiment compared with the metasurface of a multi-layer structure, which can provide new ideas for the research of tunable multifunctional metasurface.

Graphene is a light material for long-distance spin transport due to its low spin-orbit coupling, which at the same time is the main drawback for exhibiting a sizable spin Hall effect. Decoration by light atoms has been predicted to enhance the spin Hall angle in graphene while retaining a long spin diffusion length. Here, we combine a light metal oxide (oxidized Cu) with graphene to induce the spin Hall effect. Its efficiency, given by the product of the spin Hall angle and the spin diffusion length, can be tuned with the Fermi level position, exhibiting a maximum (1.8 ± 0.6 nm at 100 K) around the charge neutrality point. This all-light-element heterostructure shows a larger efficiency than conventional spin Hall materials. The gate-tunable spin Hall effect is observed up to room temperature. Our experimental demonstration provides an efficient spin-to-charge conversion system free from heavy metals and compatible with large-scale fabrication.

The enhancement of the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is usually limited at horizontally polarized incidence and around the nonadjustable Brewster angle. In this Letter, a flexible method for enhancing the reflective PSHE with tunable incident angle under both vertically (V) and horizontally (H) polarized light has been theoretically explored. By using the multipole decomposition method, the variable generalized Brewster angle (GBA) is proven to be obtained under both V- and H-polarized light at different wavelengths in the all-dielectric metasurface. Then, owing to the large ratio of Fresnel coefficients at the GBA, the enhancement of PSHE in this Letter can not only be available for both V- and H-polarization, but also achieved at widely tunable incident angle and different operating wavelengths in the same metasurface. This work provides a simple method to achieve the flexible enhancement of PSHE and offers a novel way for designing a functional spin-based photonic device.

As the in-plane spin splitting (IPSS) has a broad application for the precision measurement and sensing, it is extremely important to explore its enhancement mechanism via the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE). However, for a multilayer structure, the thickness in most of previous works is generally set as a fixed value, lacking the deeply exploration of the influence of thickness on the IPSS. By contrast, here we demonstrate the comprehensive understanding of thickness-dependent IPSS in a three layered anisotropic structure. As thickness increases, near the Brewster angle, the enhanced in-plane shift exhibits a thickness-dependently periodical modulation, besides with much wider incident angle than that in an isotropic medium. While near the critical angle, it becomes thickness-dependently periodical or linear modulation under different dielectric tensors of the anisotropic medium, no longer keeps almost constant in an isotropic medium. In addition, as exploring the asymmetric in-plane shift with arbitrary linear polarization incidence, the anisotropic medium could bring more obvious and wider range of thickness-dependently periodical asymmetric splitting. Our results deepen the understanding of enhanced IPSS, which is expected to promise a pathway in an anisotropic medium for the spin control and integrated device based on PSHE.

In inhomogeneous media, electromagnetic-wave rays deviate from the trajectories predicted by the leading-order geometrical optics. This effect, called the spin Hall effect of light, is typically neglected in ray-tracing codes used for modeling waves in plasmas. Here, we demonstrate that the spin Hall effect can be significant for radiofrequency waves in toroidal magnetized plasmas whose parameters are in the ballpark of those used in fusion experiments. For example, an electron-cyclotron wave beam can deviate by as large as 10 wavelengths (∼0.1 m) relative to the lowest-order ray trajectory in the poloidal direction. We calculate this displacement using gauge-invariant ray equations of extended geometrical optics, and we also compare our theoretical predictions with full-wave simulations.

Recently, broken symmetry within crystals has been attracting tremendous research interest since it can be utilized to effectively manipulate the propagation of photons. In particular, low-symmetry Bravais crystals can support hyperbolic shear polaritons (HShPs), holding great promise for technological upgrading in the emerging research area of spinoptics. Herein, an Otto-type multilayer structure consisting of a KRS5 prism, a sensing medium, and monoclinic β-Ga 2 O 3 crystals is designed to ameliorate the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE). The surface of β-Ga 2 O 3 is the monoclinic (010) plane ( x - y plane). We show that giant spin Hall shifts with three (or two) orders of magnitude of the incident wavelength can be obtained in the in-plane (or transverse) directions. The azimuthal dispersions of photonic spin Hall shifts present non-mirror-symmetric patterns upon tuning the rotation angle of β-Ga 2 O 3 around the z -axis in the plane. All of these exotic optical properties are closely correlated with the broken crystal lattice symmetry and the incurred excitation of HShPs in monoclinic β-Ga 2 O 3 crystals. By virtue of the remarkably enhanced PSHE, our proposed Otto-type multilayer structure shows a superior biosensing performance in which the maximum sensitivity is two orders of magnitude larger than that of previously reported PSHE biosensors based on two-dimensional materials. In addition, the optimized physical and structural parameters including the incident angle, excitation wavelength, azimuth angle and doping concentration of β-Ga 2 O 3 , thickness and refractive index of sensing medium are also investigated and presented. This work unequivocally confirms the strong influence of crystal symmetry on the PSHE, providing important insights into understanding the rich modulation of spin-orbit interactions of light via shear polaritons and therefore facilitating potential applications in photoelectronic devices.

Elements of micromachines can be driven by light, including structured light with phase and/or polarization singularities. We investigate a paraxial vectorial Gaussian beam with multiple polarization singularities residing on a circle. Such a beam is a superposition of a cylindrically polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam with a linearly polarized Gaussian beam. We demonstrate that, despite linear polarization in the initial plane, on propagation in space, alternating areas are generated with a spin angular momentum (SAM) density of opposite sign, that manifest about the spin Hall effect. We derive that in each transverse plane, maximal SAM magnitude is on a certain-radius circle. We obtain an approximate expression for the distance to the transverse plane with the maximal SAM density. Besides, we define the singularities circle radius, for which the achievable SAM density is maximal. It turns out that in this case the energies of the Laguerre-Gaussian and of the Gaussian beams are equal. We obtain an expression for the orbital angular momentum density and find that it is equal to the SAM density, multiplied by - m /2 with m being the order of the Laguerre-Gaussian beam, equal to the number of the polarization singularities. We consider an analogy with plane waves and find that the spin Hall affect arises due to the different divergence between the linearly polarized Gaussian beam and cylindrically polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam. Application areas of the obtained results are designing micromachines with optically driven elements.

We investigate the spin angular momentum (SAM) of double-index cylindrical vector beams in tight focus. Such a set of beams is a generalization of the conventional cylindrical vector beams since the polarization order is different for the different transverse field components. Based on the Richards-Wolf theory, we obtain an expression for the SAM distribution and show that if the polarization orders are of different parity, then the spin Hall effect occurs in the tight focus, which is there are alternating areas with positive and negative spin angular momentum, despite linear polarization of the initial field. We also analyze the orbital angular momentum spectrum of all the components of the focused light field and determine the overwhelming angular harmonics. Neglecting the weak harmonics, we predict the SAM distribution and demonstrate the ability to generate the focal distribution where the areas with the positive and negative spin angular momentum reside on a ring and are alternating in pairs, or separated in different semicircles. Application areas of the obtained results are designing micromachines with optically driven elements.

In this work, we analyze the design of a graphene- and germanium-based plasmonic sensor with photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) for detection of refractive index (RI) of a gas medium and magnetic field (B) applied to the graphene monolayer in THz frequency region. The PSHE phenomenon is studied in both conventional as well as modified weak measurements. The effect of gaseous medium thickness (d 4 ), transverse magnetic (TM) mode's order, and amplified angle parameter (Δ) is studied on the sensor's performance. Parameters such as sensitivity, resolution, and figure of merit have been considered for sensor's performance evaluation. The results indicate that in the conventional weak measurements, for a TM 1 mode (with d 4  = 20 µm, B = 0, and Δ = 0.1°), an RI resolution of 2.32 × 10 -12  RIU is achievable for gas medium in the range 1-1.1 RIU. In the modified weak measurements, for a TM 3 mode (with d 4  = 100 µm, B = 0, and Δ = 0.1°), the RI resolution close to 1.39 × 10 -10  RIU is achievable for gas sensing. The same sensor design was also studied for magnetic field sensing while keeping the value of gaseous medium RI (n 4 ) as 1. The results indicate that for a TM 1 mode (with d 4  = 20 µm and Δ = 0.1°), in the conventional weak measurements, a magnetic field resolution of 5.31 × 10 -4  µT (i.e., 0.53 nT) is achievable for a range 0-1 T of B. Further, it is found that in contrast with the conventional case, the resolutions in the modified weak measurements are improved for large values of the Δ. The spin Hall effect of light, referring to the spin-dependent and transverse splitting of light at an optical interface, is an interface-dependent phenomenon. In contrast to this commonly accepted statement, it has been recently reported that the spin Hall effect under circularly polarized light is interface-independent. Despite this interface-independence, however, the reflection of the spin Hall shifted beam is mostly suppressed under near-normal incidence, where the spin Hall shift is large because of the handedness reversal that occurs during the reflection. Here we present a single-layered dielectric metasurface to realize the interface-independent and strengthened spin Hall effect of light. Numerical simulation results confirmed that the anisotropic geometry of the metasurface induced phase-reversed reflection for one linear polarization and phase-preserved reflection for the other, thereby strongly strengthening the reflection of the spin-Hall-shifted beam. Our work will pave a route toward the precise displacement of the beam at the nanoscale without perturbing its polarization state.

Using an extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and a nonadiabatic dynamics method, we investigate the dynamics of bipolarons in coupled nondegenerate organic chains including the spin-orbit coupling and interchain coupling. By tracing the time-dependent evolution of the charges and spins in each chain, an obvious oscillating spin Hall effect (SHE) from the bipolaron transport is revealed. The results are compared with that from polaron-dominated transport. A reduction of amplitude and an increase of oscillating frequency are observed for the SHE from the bipolaron transport. The mechanism is attributed to the enhanced skew scattering off the larger transient deformations of the chains in the case of the bipolaron. Spectrum analysis by fast Fourier transform of the SHE signal demonstrates a distinct shift of two characteristic peaks to a higher onset frequency compared to the polaron transport. The charge-spin conversion efficiency is also compared, where a larger conversion efficiency is obtained from the bipolaron transport due to the lower saturated velocity. The effects of the strength of the electric field and the interactions are discussed. This work reveals the role of the bipolaron in organic SHE and provides a feasible way to achieve larger conversion efficiency by controlling the species of carriers with the concentration of the dopant.

Though numerous studies of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) of light beams propagating along the optic axis of uniaxial crystals have been carried out, in previous studies, the initial input beams have cylindrical symmetry. In this case, the total system preserves cylindrical symmetry so that the output light after passing through the uniaxial crystal doesn't exhibit spin dependent symmetry breaking. Therefore, no spin Hall effect (SHE) occurs. In this paper, we investigate the SOI of a kind of novel structured light beam, grafted vortex beam (GVB) in uniaxial crystal. The cylindrical symmetry of the system is broken by the spatial phase structure of the GVB. As a result, a SHE determined by the spatial phase structure emerges. It is found that the SHE and evolution of the local angular momentum are controllable both by changing the grafted topological charge of the GVB and by employing linear electro-optic effect of the uniaxial crystal. This can open a new perspective to investigate the SHE of light beams in uniaxial crystals via constructing and manipulating the spatial structure of the input beams artificially, hence offers novel regulation capabilities of spin photon.

In this work, a scanning inverse spin Hall effect measurement system based on a shorted coaxial resonator has been built, which provides a high throughput method to characterize spin transport properties. The system is capable of performing spin pumping measurements on patterned samples within an area of 100 × 100 mm 2 . Its capability was demonstrated with Py/Ta bilayer stripes deposited on the same substrate with different thicknesses of Ta. The results show that the spin diffusion length is about 4.2 nm with a conductivity of about 7.5 × 10 5  Ω -1  m -1 , which leads to the conclusion that the intrinsic mechanism of spin relaxation of Ta is the Elliott-Yafet interactions. The spin Hall angle of Ta is estimated to be about -0.014 at room temperature. The setup developed in this work provides a convenient, efficient, and nondestructive way to obtain the spin and electron transportation characteristics of the spintronic materials, which will fertilize this community by developing new materials and figuring out their mechanism.
