Background: The use of protein supplements by athletes has risen due to their effectiveness in meeting dietary needs. However, there is a growing concern about the presence of potentially toxic metals (PTMs. Al, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in these supplements. Consequently, it is crucial to evaluate the levels of these PTMs to ensure the safety of the supplements., Methods: The objective of the current study was to assess the PTMs concentrations in protein supplements and examine any possible health hazards. Twenty-five samples of protein supplements were purchased from different pharmacies to screen them for metals. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was utilized to analyze metal content. Additionally, chemometric methods such as Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC), principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were employed to identify possible sources of PTMs contamination in protein supplements., Results: Concentration ranges for PTMs were found as, Al (0.03-3.05 mg/kg), Cr (0.11-0.89 mg/kg), Mn (1.13-8.40 mg/kg), Ni (0.06-0.71 mg/kg), Cu (1.05-5.51 mg/kg), Zn (2.14-27.10 mg/kg), Cd (0.01-0.78 mg/kg), and Pb (0.06-0.57 mg/kg). The weekly intake of Cd exceeded the level of tolerable weekly intake (TWI) set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)., Conclusion: Athletes, bodybuilders, fitness enthusiasts, dieters, young adults and adolescents, and health-conscious individuals should be conscious of Cd concentration as it does not compliance the TWI set by EFSA. Background: Parthenium hysterophorous and Lantana camara are notable for their significant phytochemical and antimicrobial properties. Advancements in phytochemical research have led to the development of novel formulations and products derived from P. hysterophorus and L. camara. For instance, patent extracts from these plants have been utilized in the formulation of pharmaceutical drugs, herbal supplements, cosmeceuticals, and agricultural products. P. hysterophorous, commonly known as Santa Maria feverfew or Congress grass, contains various bioactive compounds like terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics, and alkaloids.These compounds are the key to its medicinal properties, particularly its antimicrobial activity. On the other hand, L. camara, often referred to as wild sage, is rich in phytochemicals such as terpenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloid glycosides., Methods: P. hysterophorous and L. camara plants selected and checking their antimicrobial activity by agar well diffusion method., Results: In our study, we found that the leaf extract of P. hysterophorous exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity against E. coli. P. hysterophorous exhibited the most potent antifungal activity against A. niger and T. viride, with a diameter of inhibition zone measuring 12 mm, followed by A. flavus and A. parasiticus. In case of L. camara, the inhibitory zone ranging from 14 to 18 mm was detected against S. abony, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and K. pneumonia. Purpose: Wood comprises different cell types, such as fibers, tracheids and vessels, defining its properties. Studying cells' shape, size, and arrangement in microscopy images is crucial for understanding wood characteristics. Typically, this involves macerating (soaking) samples in a solution to separate cells, then spreading them on slides for imaging with a microscope that covers a wide area, capturing thousands of cells. However, these cells often cluster and overlap in images, making the segmentation difficult and time-consuming using standard image-processing methods., Results: In this work, we developed an automatic deep learning segmentation approach that utilizes the one-stage YOLOv8 model for fast and accurate segmentation and characterization of macerated fiber and vessel form aspen trees in microscopy images. The model can analyze 32,640 x 25,920 pixels images and demonstrate effective cell detection and segmentation, achieving a mAP 0.5 - 0.95 of 78 %. To assess the model's robustness, we examined fibers from a genetically modified tree line known for longer fibers. The outcomes were comparable to previous manual measurements. Additionally, we created a user-friendly web application for image analysis and provided the code for use on Google Colab., Conclusion: By leveraging YOLOv8's advances, this work provides a deep learning solution to enable efficient quantification and analysis of wood cells suitable for practical applications., (© 2024. Objective: The objective of the current study was to find out the independent and interactive effects of prilled fat supplementation with protein on the production performance of early lactating Nili Ravi buffaloes., Methods: Sixteen early lactating buffaloes (36.75±5.79 d in milk; mean±standard error) received 4 treatments in 4×4 Latin-square design according to 2×2 factorial arrangements. The dietary treatments were: i) low protein low fat, ii) low protein high fat, iii) high protein low fat, and iv) high protein high fat. The dietary treatments contained 2 protein (8.7% and 11.7% crude protein) and fat levels (2.6% and 4.6% ether extract) on a dry matter basis., Results: The yields of milk and fat increased with increasing protein and fat independently (p≤0.05). Energy-, protein-, and fat-corrected milk yields also increased with increasing protein and fat independently (p≤0.05). Increasing dietary protein increased the protein yield by 3.75% and lactose yield by 3.15% and increasing dietary fat supplies increased the fat contents by 3.93% (p≤0.05). Milk yield and fat-corrected milk to dry matter intake ratios were increased at high protein and high fat levels (p≤0.05). Milk nitrogen efficiency was unaffected by dietary fat (p>0.10), whereas it decreased with increasing protein supplies (p≤0.05). Plasma urea nitrogen and cholesterol were increased by increasing protein and fat levels, respectively (p≤0.05). The values of predicted methane production reduced with increasing dietary protein and fat., Conclusion: It is concluded that prilled fat and protein supplies increased milk and fat yield along with increased ratios of milk yield and fat-corrected milk yields to dry matter intake. However, no interaction was observed between prilled fat and protein supplementation for production parameters, body weight, body condition score and blood metabolites. Predicted methane production decreased with increasing protein and fat levels.

A two-component model of gradient elution chromatography is investigated to theoretically study the effects of simultaneous variations in temperature and solvent strength on the retention behaviors of elution profiles in thermally insulated liquid chromatographic columns. The gradient elution technique is based on the gradual increase or decrease in eluent strength during the chromatographic operation by varying the composition of the mobile phase. The enthalpy of adsorption is primarily responsible for internal temperature variations inside the column, as heat adsorbs during the adsorption process and releases in the desorption phase. Both types of variations change the propagation speeds of moving pulses inside the column which can lead to better separation of the components and a reduction in the recycling time for the next injection. The equilibrium dispersive model (EDM) coupled with the energy balance equation for temperature and transport equation for the volume fraction of the solvent is utilized to simulate this complex process. The resulting nonlinear model equations are approximated by applying a semi-discrete second-order finite volume scheme. The numerical solutions are used to study the impact of a gradient starting and ending times, volume-fraction of the solvent, solvent strength parameter, the slope of gradient, enthalpy of adsorption, injection temperature, and the ratio of specific heats on the concentration profiles., (© The Author(s) 2023. Drought is one of the foremost outcomes of global warming and global climate change. It is a serious threat to humans and other living beings. To reduce the adverse impact of drought, mitigation strategies as well as sound projections of extreme events are essential. This research aims to strengthen the robustness of anticipated twenty-first century drought by combining different Global Climate Models (GCMs). In this article, we develop a new drought index, named Maximum Relevant Prior Feature Ensemble index that is based on the newly proposed weighting scheme, called weighted ensemble (WE). In the application, this study considers 32 randomly scattered grid points within the Tibetan Plateau region and 18 GCMs of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) of precipitation. In this study, the comparative inferences of the WE scheme are made with the traditional simple model averaging (SMA). To investigate the trend and long-term probability of various classes, this research employs Markov chain steady states probability, Mann-Kendall trend test, and Sen's Slope estimator. The outcomes of this research are twofold. Aberrant condensation and localization of the RNA-binding protein (RBP) fused in sarcoma (FUS) occur in variants of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Changes in RBP function are commonly associated with changes in axonal cytoskeletal organization and branching in neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we asked whether branching defects also occur in vivo in a model of FUS-associated disease. We use two reported Xenopus models of ALS/FTD (of either sex), the ALS-associated mutant FUS(P525L) and a mimic of hypomethylated FUS, FUS(16R). Both mutants strongly reduced axonal complexity in vivo. We also observed an axon looping defect for FUS(P525L) in the target area, which presumably arises due to errors in stop cue signaling. To assess whether the loss of axon complexity also had a cue-independent component, we assessed axonal cytoskeletal integrity in vitro. Using a novel combination of fluorescence and atomic force microscopy, we found that mutant FUS reduced actin density in the growth cone, altering its mechanical properties. Background: Achieving a reliable seal in root canal obturation is essential for the success of endodontic treatment. Despite the availability of multiple techniques, the comparative sealing abilities of these methods remain a topic of investigation, particularly in permanent molars., Materials and Methods: This in vitro study involved 60 extracted permanent molars, divided randomly into three groups: Group A (lateral compaction), Group B (thermoplasticized gutta-percha), and Group C (single cone). After instrumentation and obturation, the sealing ability was assessed using a dye penetration method. Arbitrary values were assigned to quantify the extent of dye penetration., Results: The mean dye penetration values were as follows: Group B (thermoplasticized gutta-percha) had the lowest penetration (2.1 ± 0.3 mm), followed by Group A (lateral compaction) (3.5 ± 0.4 mm), and Group C (single cone) exhibited the highest penetration (5.2 ± 0.6 mm)., Conclusion: In this study, thermoplasticized gutta-percha demonstrated superior sealing ability compared to lateral compaction and single cone techniques in permanent molars. Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Primary hypothyroidism is a common comorbid condition, but little is known about its association with COVID-19 severity and outcomes. This study aims to identify the frequency of hypothyroidism in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 as well as describe the differences in outcomes between patients with and without pre-existing hypothyroidism using an observational, multinational registry., Methods: In an observational cohort study we enrolled patients 18 years or older, with laboratory-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection between March 2020 and February 2021. The primary outcomes were (1) the disease severity defined as per the World Health Organization Scale for Clinical Improvement, which is an ordinal outcome corresponding with the highest severity level recorded during a patient's index COVID-19 hospitalization, (2) in-hospital mortality and (3) hospital-free days. Secondary outcomes were the rate of intensive care unit (ICU) admission and ICU mortality., Results: Among the 20,366 adult patients included in the study, pre-existing hypothyroidism was identified in 1616 (7.9%). The median age for the Hypothyroidism group was 70 (interquartile range: 59-80) years, and 65% were female and 67% were White. The most common comorbidities were hypertension (68%), diabetes (42%), dyslipidemia (37%) and obesity (28%). After adjusting for age, body mass index, sex, admission date in the quarter year since March 2020, race, smoking history and other comorbid conditions (coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia), pre-existing hypothyroidism was not associated with higher odds of severe disease using the World Health Organization disease severity index (odds ratio [OR]: 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.92, 1.13; p = .69), in-hospital mortality (OR: 1.03; 95% CI: 0.92, 1.15; p = .58) or differences in hospital-free days (estimated difference 0.01 days; 95% CI: -0.45, 0.47; p = .97). Pre-existing hypothyroidism was not associated with ICU admission or ICU mortality in unadjusted as well as in adjusted analysis., Conclusions: In an international registry, hypothyroidism was identified in around 1 of every 12 adult hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Pre-existing hypothyroidism in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was not associated with higher disease severity or increased risk of mortality or ICU admissions. Objective: To describe the characteristics of COVID-19 patients with pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum (PTX/PM) and their association with patient outcomes., Patients and Methods: Adults admitted to five Mayo Clinic hospitals with COVID-19 between 03/2020-01/2022 were evaluated. PTX/PM was defined by imaging. Descriptive analyses and a matched (age, sex, admission month, COVID-19 severity) cohort comparison was performed. Hospital mortality, length of stay (LOS), and predisposing factors were assessed., Results: Among 6663 patients, 197 had PTX/PM (3 %) (75 PM, 40 PTX, 82 both). The median age was 59, with 71 % males. Exposure to invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and high-flow nasal cannula before PTX/PM were 42 %, 17 %, and 20 %, respectively. Among isolated PTX and PM/PTX patients 70 % and 53.7 % underwent an intervention, respectively, while 96 % of the PM-only group was followed conservatively.A total of 171 patients with PTX/PM were compared to 171 matched controls. PTX/PM patients had more underlying lung disease (40.9 vs . 23.4 %, p   <  0.001) and lower median body mass index (BMI) (29.5 vs . 31.3 kg/m 2 , p  = .007) than controls. Among patients with available data, PTX/PM patients had higher median positive end-expiratory and plateau pressures than controls; however, differences were not significant (10 vs. 8 cmH 2 O; p = 0.38 and 28 vs. 22 cmH 2 O; p  = 0.11, respectively). PTX/PM patients had a higher odds of mortality (adjusted odds ratio [95%CI]: 3.37 [1.61-7.07]) and longer mean LOS (percent change [95%CI]: 39 [9-77]) than controls., Conclusion: In COVID-19 patients with similar severity, PTX/PM patients had more underlying lung disease and lower BMI. Global warming upsets the environmental balance and leads to more frequent and severe climatic events. These extreme events include floods, droughts, and heatwaves. These widespread extreme events disrupt various sectors of ecosystems directly. However, among all these events, drought is one of the most prolonged climatic events that significantly destroys the ecosystem. Therefore, accurate and efficient assessment of droughts is necessary to mitigate their detrimental impacts. In recent years, several drought indices based on global climate models (GCMs) of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) have been proposed to quantify and monitor droughts. However, each index has its advantages and limitations. As each index ensembles different models by using different statistical approaches, it is well known that the margin of error is always a part of statistics. Therefore, this study proposed a new drought index to reduce the uncertainty involved in the assessment of droughts. The proposed index named the Ridge Ensemble Standardized Drought Index (RESDI) is based on the innovative ensemble approach termed ridge parameters and distance-based weighting (RDW) scheme. And the development of this RDW scheme is based on two types of methods i.e., ridge regression and divergence-based method. In this research, we ensemble 18 different GCMs of CMIP6 using the RDW scheme. A comparative analysis of the RDW scheme is performed against the simple model average (SMA) and Bayesian model averaging (BMA) schemes at 32 locations on the Tibetan plateau. The comparison revealed that RDW has less mean absolute error (MAE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE). Therefore, the developed RESDI based on RDW is used to project drought properties under three distinct shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios: SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5, across seven different time scales (1, 3, 7, 9, 12, 24, and 48). The projected data is then standardized by using the K-components Gaussian mixture model (K-CGMM). In addition, the study employs steady-state probabilities (SSPs) to determine the long-term behavior of drought. This study scrutinized the phytochemical composition, curative, hepato and nephro protective effect of different doses of lyophilized juice of Citrus reticulata fruit against paracetamol induced toxicity. Phytochemical screening and RP-HPLC analysis were conducted to quantify total polyphenols and flavonoids respectively. For evaluation of in vivo curative and protective effects, thirty six rats were randomly divided into six groups. In first four groups 1, II, III and IV paracetamol 75mg/kg, i.p, 150mg/kg, 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg p.o doses of lyophilized juice were administered to rats respectively. Blood samples were withdrawn at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours in paracetamol treated rats. For screening of hepato and nephro protective effect Group V and VI were fed on lyophilized juice (250mg/kg and 500mg/kg p.o) for seven days and on 8 th day blood samples were collected at 0,24,48 and 72 hours. Hepatic and renal biomarkers were monitored. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of total polyphenols (20.7±0.3GAEmg/g) and flavonoid contents (21.2±0.4QE mg/g). RP-HPLC also confirmed the presence of Myricetin, Quercetin and Kaempferol in fruit juice. The lyophilized juice at 500mg/kg dose have shown profound decrease in paracetamol induced elevated serum levels of liver and kidney functions, which suggests a possible therapeutic role of its constituents in hepatic and kidney malfunctions.

In this paper, a rigorous theoretical study is conducted to analyze the influence of varying solvent compositions on the retention characteristics of elution profiles within a fixed-bed liquid chromatographic column. In gradient chromatography, the propagation speed of elution profiles is manipulated through a progressive variation in the mobile-phase composition. Consequently, enhanced separation of the mixture components can be achieved together with a reduction in the requisite recycling times for subsequent injections. In other words, both the efficiency and the selectivity of the column can be enhanced. The lumped kinetic model coupled with the convection-diffusion equation for the volume fraction of the solvent is applied to simulate the process. The resulting nonlinear model equations are numerically solved by applying a semidiscrete second-order finite-volume method. The numerical solutions are utilized to quantify the effects of gradient starting and ending times, solvent composition, solvent strength parameters, and gradient slope on the concentration profiles. Additionally, temporal numerical moments are plotted versus the starting and ending times of the gradient, and standard performance criteria are presented for evaluating the process performance. Background: Endodontic microbial flora plays a pivotal role in the development and persistence of periodontal endodontic lesions (PELs). Understanding the composition and prevalence of microbial species in PELs is essential for effective treatment strategies., Materials and Methods: Microbial samples were collected from 50 teeth diagnosed with PELs. Sterile paper points were used to obtain samples from the root canals. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted and subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene to identify bacterial species. The obtained data were analyzed using statistical methods., Results: The microbial analysis revealed a diverse range of bacterial species in PELs. The most prevalent species were Porphyromonas gingivalis (32.5%), Treponema denticola (28.0%), and Fusobacterium nucleatum (22.5%). Streptococcus mutans (9.0%) and Actinomyces naeslundii (8.0%) were also frequently detected. Additionally, Prevotella intermedia (7.0%), Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (3.5%), and Enterococcus faecalis (2.5%) were present in lower frequencies., Conclusion: The presence of a diverse microbial flora in teeth with PELs underscores the polymicrobial nature of these lesions. The predominance of periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis , Treponema denticola , and Fusobacterium nucleatum suggests a strong association between periodontal and endodontic infections. Background and Aims: Lumbar vertebral bone attenuation, measured in Hounsfield units (HU) can indirectly indicate the bone mineral density (BMD). The aim of this study is to determine the optimal HU threshold on abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans to detect osteopathy in patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP)., Methods: This cross-sectional study included patients with CP who underwent CT scans to measure HU at L1 to L4 vertebrae. The mean lumbar vertebral attenuation of female renal transplant donors, aged 20-30 years was utilized to calculate the T-score HU of all patients at each vertebral level. Receiver operator characteristic analysis was used to determine the HU and T-score HU for diagnosis of osteopathy in patients with CP. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry value was used to categorize osteopenia and osteoporosis., Results: A total of 175 patients (mean age, 34.5 ± 10.9 years; 72 % males) and 33 female renal transplant donors (mean age, 28 ± 2.4 years) were included. A threshold HU value 212 or T score HU of -1.80 at L1 vertebra was found to have a 78 % sensitivity and 70 % specificity for differentiating between osteoporosis and non-osteoporosis (osteopenia and normal BMD). After completing treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC), patients often face oral complications like oral pain, limited mouth opening and dry mouth which significantly reduce their oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). These issues impact their overall well-being, social activities and long-term survival. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate OHRQoL and its association with sociodemographic characteristics, oral hygiene practices and oral clinical parameters such as oral hygiene status and oral mucositis grade in patients who have completed treatment for head and neck cancer. This cross-sectional study involved 79 HNC-treated patients within first year after completion of cancer treatment attending ENT and dental clinics at outpatient department (OPD) setting in Karachi. Data was collected electronically using structured questionnaire comprising of EORTC QLQ H&N - 35 to measure OHRQoL, patients were also examined for oral hygiene status using oral hygiene index- simplified (OHI-s) and oral mucositis grade using WHO oral mucositis scale. Multiple linear regression was used to test OHRQoL associations with the sociodemographic and different clinical factors. The result showed an overall mean score for oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of 25.02 ± 15.86 (95% CI 21.46-28.57), with difficulty in mouth opening 53.16 ± 18.88 and dry mouth 45.14 ± 24.48 being predominant concerns for decline in the OHRQoL in the population. Male predilection was observed among participants n = 60 (75.9%), majority of the participants n = 41 (51.9%) were below 52 years of age. n = 63 (80%) participants received radiotherapy alongside surgery and chemotherapy. Most of participants n = 66 (83.5%) experienced moderate to severe oral mucositis with poor oral hygiene status n = 56 (71%). Significant associations were found between OHRQoL and BMI, OH status, marital status, monthly income, gender and fluoride toothpaste (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that Quality of Life (QoL) among HNC treated patients is negatively impacted by their poor oral health, post cancer treatment. Background and Aims: Limited data exist on the safety of early nasogastric (NG) feeding in patients with cirrhosis after endotherapy for variceal bleeding (VB). We studied the impact of early NG tube feeding in these patients in this proof-of-concept open-label randomized controlled trial., Methods: Eligible patients with cirrhosis undergoing endotherapy for VB were randomized to receive either a liquid diet through a 14 Fr NG tube (commencing 1 h after endotherapy) (early feeding [EF] group) or sips of water and lemon water orally (standard-of-care [SOC] group) for total duration of 48 h. The primary outcome was 5-day rebleeding in both arms. Other outcomes included 5-day infection rate, hepatic encephalopathy during hospitalization, and 6-week mortality., Results: Eighty patients (Mean age: 41 ± 11.5 years; males [82.5%]; alcohol etiology [55%]) were included. Baseline median Child-Pugh and MELD scores were similar (CTP: 8 [IQR: 8-9] vs 9 [8-9.25]; P  = 0.47 and MELDNa: 13 [10.75-16.25] vs 15 [12-18.25]; P  = 0.16). The 5-day rebleeding rates in EF and SOC groups were 2.5% and 5%, respectively ( P  = 0.55), and non-inferiority or superiority of either could not be demonstrated. The incidence of infection (2.5% [EF] vs 2.5% [SOC]; P  = 1.00) and development of HE (5% [EF] vs 2.5% [SOC]; P  = 0.36) during hospitalization were comparable. The average daily calorie and protein intake in the EF group during the 48 h was 1318 ± 240 Kcals and 43.4 ± 9.2 g of proteins. The hypomethylation of fused in sarcoma (FUS) in frontotemporal lobar degeneration promotes the formation of irreversible condensates of FUS. However, the mechanisms by which these hypomethylated FUS condensates cause neuronal dysfunction are unknown. Here we report that expression of FUS constructs mimicking hypomethylated FUS causes aberrant dendritic FUS condensates in CA1 neurons. These hypomethylated FUS condensates exhibit spontaneous, and activity induced movement within the dendrite. They impair excitatory synaptic transmission, postsynaptic density-95 expression, and dendritic spine plasticity. These neurophysiological defects are dependent upon both the dendritic localisation of the condensates, and their ability to undergo liquid-liquid phase separation. These results indicate that the irreversible liquid-liquid phase separation is a key component of hypomethylated FUS pathophysiology in sporadic FTLD, and this can cause synapse dysfunction in sporadic FTLD., (© 2023. Core-shell particles enable the separation of intricate mixtures in a highly efficient and rapid manner. The porous shell particles increased the separation efficiency with expedited flow rates due to an abatement in the pore volume accessible for longitudinal diffusion and a decrease in diffusion path length. This study focuses on the numerical approximation of a nonlinear isothermal general rate model applied to stationary bed columns that are replete with inert core adsorbents featuring double adsorption sites. The transport of solute in heterogeneous porous media can be modeled by a nonlinear convection acquiescent partial differential equation system together with a specific nonlinear algebraic relation: the bi-Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Therefore, it is important to develop accurate and reliable numerical techniques that can perform accurate numerical simulations of these models. We extended and implemented a second-order, semidiscrete, high-resolution finite volume method to simulate the governing equations of the model. Single solute flow and multi component mixture flows are assessed through a series of numerical experiments to theoretically illustrate the repercussions of intraparticle diffusion, film mass resistance, axial dispersion, and the size of the inert core radius upon simulated elution curves. Ultra-processed food (UPF) intake is associated with increased non-communicable disease risks. However, systematic reports on sociodemographic predictors of UPF intake are lacking. This review aimed to understand UPF consumption based on sociodemographic factors, using nationally representative cohorts. The systematic review was pre-registered (PROSPERO:CRD42022360199), following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE searches (‘ultra-processed/ultraprocessed’ and ‘ultra-processing/ultraprocessing’) until 7 September 2022 retrieved 1131 results. Inclusion criteria included: observational, nationally representative adult samples, in English, in peer-reviewed journals, assessing the association between sociodemographics and individual-level UPF intake defined by the NOVA classification. Exclusion criteria included: not nationally representative, no assessment of sociodemographics and individual-level UPF intake defined by NOVA. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). Fifty-five papers were included, spanning thirty-two countries. All thirteen sociodemographic variables identified were significantly associated with UPF intake in one or more studies. Significant differences in UPF intake were seen across age, race/ethnicity, rural/urbanisation, food insecurity, income and region, with up to 10–20% differences in UPF intake (% total energy). Higher UPF intakes were associated with younger age, urbanisation and being unmarried, single, separated or divorced. Education, income and socioeconomic status showed varying associations, depending on country. Multivariate analyses indicated that associations were independent of other sociodemographics. Household status and gender were generally not associated with UPF intake. NOS averaged 5·7/10. Several characteristics are independently associated with high UPF intake, indicating large sociodemographic variation in non-communicable disease risk. These findings highlight significant public health inequalities associated with UPF intake, and the urgent need for policy action to minimise social injustice-related health inequalities.

We present a new approach to segment and classify bacterial spore layers from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images using a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Random Forest (RF) classifier algorithm. This approach utilizes deep learning, with the CNN extracting features from images, and the RF classifier using those features for classification. The proposed model achieved 73% accuracy, 64% precision, 46% sensitivity, and 47% F1-score with test data. Compared to other classifiers such as AdaBoost, XGBoost, and SVM, our proposed model demonstrates greater robustness and higher generalization ability for non-linear segmentation. Our model is also able to identify spores with a damaged core as verified using TEMs of chemically exposed spores. Therefore, the proposed method will be valuable for identifying and characterizing spore features in TEM images, reducing labor-intensive work as well as human bias., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Background A single-stranded RNA genome-encapsulated virus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is known to cause severe acute respiratory syndrome in humans. People with diabetes and hypertension are often more susceptible to developing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and experience a disproportionately higher rate of morbidity and death compared to the general population. The COVID-19 pandemic has become an urgent worldwide issue. Therefore, the main goal of this study is to assess how diabetes and hypertension, both separately and together, affect clinical outcomes in terms of morbidity and mortality in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. This study aimed to evaluate the disease outcomes in hypertensive and diabetic patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Methodology This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2022 to November 2022. Using purposive selective sampling, a total of 90 known hypertensive and diabetic patients with COVID-19 aged 18-90 years admitted in COVID-19 isolation wards and intensive care units (ICUs) of Mayo Hospital Lahore were recruited in this study after obtaining informed consent and IRB approval from the Institutional Review Board of King Edward Medical University, Lahore. Patients who did not provide consent, patients whose positive polymerase chain reaction reports for COVID-19 were not available, pregnant females, and patients with other comorbidities were excluded from the study. Data were collected from the COVID-19 isolation medical wards and ICUs from patient charts containing age, the status of hypertension and diabetes, disease status, severity, and levels of inflammatory markers, i.e., D-dimers, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum ferritin, C-reactive protein (CRP). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Quantitative variables such as age were presented as mean ± SD. Qualitative variables such as hypertension, diabetes, and levels of inflammatory markers were presented as frequency and percentages. Results In this study, 90 patients were included, with 51 (57%) females and 39 (43%) males, all of whom were either hypertensive, diabetic, or both. In total, 70 (78%) patients were admitted to ICUs and 20 (22%) to COVID-19 medical isolation wards. Among 70 ICU patients, 39 (43.3%) were on continuous positive airway pressure/bilevel positive airway pressure, seven (7.8%) were on ventilators, and 44 (48.8%) were on normal oxygen masks/non-rebreather masks with high-flow oxygen. Overall, 100% of the patients included in the study had raised levels of inflammatory markers, low lymphocyte count, and increased neutrophil count. In total, 84 (93%) patients had severely high and six (7%) patients had moderately high CRP levels. Moreover, 33 (36.7%) patients had severely high and 57 (63.3%) patients had moderately high D-dimer levels. Further, 25 (28%) patients had severely high, 26 (29%) patients had moderately high, and 39 (43.3%) patients had significantly raised levels of serum ferritin. In total, 21 (23%) patients had severely high, 37 (41%) had moderately high, and 32 (36%) had significantly raised levels of serum LDH. Among the 90 patients, 65 (73%) expired and 25 (27%) survived. Of the expired patients, 62 (95%) were admitted to ICUs, and three (5%) were admitted to wards. This paper presents the numerical approximation of a nonlinear equilibrium-dispersive (ED) model of multicomponent mixtures for simulating single-column chromatographic processes. Using Danckwerts boundary conditions (DBCs), the ED is studied for both generalized and standard bi-Langmuir adsorption isotherms. Advection-diffusion partial differential equations are used to represent fixed-bed chromatographic processes. As the diffusion term is significantly weaker than the advection term, sophisticated numerical techniques must be applied for solving such model equations. In this study, the model equations are numerically solved by using the Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) finite element method. The technique is designed to handle sudden changes (sharp discontinuities) in solutions and to produce highly accurate results. The method is tested with several case studies considering different parameters, and its results are compared with the high-resolution finite volume scheme. One-, two-, and three-component liquid chromatography elutions on fixed beds are among the case studies being considered. Pulmonary auscultation is essential for detecting abnormal lung sounds during physical assessments, but its reliability depends on the operator. Machine learning (ML) models offer an alternative by automatically classifying lung sounds. ML models require substantial data, and public databases aim to address this limitation. This systematic review compares characteristics, diagnostic accuracy, concerns, and data sources of existing models in the literature. Papers published from five major databases between 1990 and 2022 were assessed. Quality assessment was accomplished with a modified QUADAS-2 tool. The review encompassed 62 studies utilizing ML models and public-access databases for lung sound classification. Artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machines (SVM) were frequently employed in the ML classifiers. The accuracy ranged from 49.43% to 100% for discriminating abnormal sound types and 69.40% to 99.62% for disease class classification. Seventeen public databases were identified, with the ICBHI 2017 database being the most used (66%). The majority of studies exhibited a high risk of bias and concerns related to patient selection and reference standards. Summarizing, ML models can effectively classify abnormal lung sounds using publicly available data sources. Nevertheless, inconsistent reporting and methodologies pose limitations to advancing the field, and therefore, public databases should adhere to standardized recording and labeling procedures.

Performance evaluation of drilling fluids is essential for a successful drilling project, as they not only remove drill cuttings but also prevent undesired penetration or outflow of formation fluids by sealing off wellbore walls. However, concerns have been raised about the use of chemical additives in drilling fluids due to their toxicity and non-biodegradability. To this end, agricultural waste materials are recognized as a promising alternative as they are cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and can be used as a substitute for lost circulation materials. Rice husk ash (RHA) has become popular as an additive due to its renewable characteristics, including its large surface area, silica content, and microporous structure. This research article explores the rheological properties of drilling fluid with RHA as a filter control medium. The results showed that increasing concentrations of RHA in the drilling mud significantly improved its rheology, particularly at higher concentrations (15 and 20 wt.%). The addition of RHA modified the filtration and rheological properties of the drilling mud, resulting in improved plastic viscosity, yield point, density, gel strength, and thixotropy. However, filter loss and mud cake thickness increased at elevated RHA concentrations. Furthermore, the pH test revealed that the mud's properties shifted toward the acidic region as the RHA concentration increased. The results indicate that RHA could be used as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional chemical additives with a positive environmental impact. This study may also provide valuable insights into the use of RHA in water-based bentonite mud and could serve as a guide for future research in the drilling industry., (© 2023. Introduction Chronic venous insufficiency is a common condition that leads to the development of incompetent great or short saphenous veins (GSV or SSV) resulting in varicose vein development. Conservative management is initially employed for its treatment; however, the varicosities that do not respond to conservative management may require intervention by surgery or endovenous routes. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and mechanochemical ablation (MOCA) are the two most common endovascular techniques available for the management of incompetent GSV or SSV. Clarivein and Flebogrif are two devices to treat incompetent GSV or SSV by MOCA. Mechanical ablation is provided by their flexible cutting elements and chemical ablation is provided by polidocanol or sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS). RFA uses radiofrequency waves to treat venous insufficiency. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the early treatment outcome results for incompetent GSV or SSV treated with RFA or MOCA by Flebogrif. Materials and methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study undertaken at the Radiology Department of Indus Hospital and Health Network. Electronic Medical Records of all the patients who underwent RFA or MOCA for GSV or SSV for venous insufficiency from January 2021 to December 2021 were included. Both male and female patients aged 18 years and above diagnosed with venous insufficiency having Clinical, Etiologic, Anatomic, and Pathophysiologic (CEAP) scores of >1 were included. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v 22 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) was used for data entry and analysis. Results 137 patients were included in the present study with a mean age of 53.8 ± 12.1 years. Pre-procedure CEAP score was C3 in 59 (84.4%), C4 in four (5.7%), and C6 in seven (10.0%) patients in patients who underwent RFA, and it was successful in 69 (98.6%) patients. Pre-procedure CEAP score was C3 in 62 (92.5%), C4 in two (3.0%), and C6 in three (4.5%) patients who underwent MOCA, and it was successful in 59 (88.1%) patients. Pain was the most frequent complication observed in both RFA and MOCA. Introduction: Myosin IXB (MYO9B) is an unconventional myosin with RhoGAP activity and thus is a regulator of actin cytoskeletal organization. MYO9B was previously shown to be necessary for skeletal growth and health and to play a role in actin-based functions of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts. However, its role in responses to mechanical stimulation of bone cells has not yet been described. Therefore, experiments were undertaken to determine the role of MYO9B in bone cell responses to mechanical stress both in vitro and in vivo . Methods: MYO9B expression was knocked down in osteoblast and osteocyte cell lines using RNA interference and the resulting cells were subjected to mechanical stresses including cyclic tensile strain, fluid shear stress, and plating on different substrates (no substrate vs. monomeric or polymerized collagen type I). Osteocytic cells were also subjected to MYO9B regulation through Slit-Robo signaling. Further, wild-type or Myo9b -/- mice were subjected to a regimen of whole-body vibration (WBV) and changes in bone quality were assessed by micro-CT. Results: Unlike control cells, MYO9B-deficient osteoblastic cells subjected to uniaxial cyclic tensile strain were unable to orient their actin stress fibers perpendicular to the strain. Osteocytic cells in which MYO9B was knocked down exhibited elongated dendrites but were unable to respond normally to treatments that increase dendrite length such as fluid shear stress and Slit-Robo signaling. Osteocytic responses to mechanical stimuli were also found to be dependent on the polymerization state of collagen type I substrates. Wild-type mice responded to WBV with increased bone tissue mineral density values while Myo9b -/- mice responded with bone loss. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are highly efficient, low-emission, and fuel-flexible energy conversion devices. However, their commercialization has lagged due to the lack of long-term durability. Among several performance degradation mechanisms, cathode degradation and elemental inter-diffusion of the electrolyte and cathode has been identified as the predominant factors. In the most common SOFC systems, a cobalt-based perovskite material is used, for example LSC or LSCF. These cobalt-based materials offer mixed conductivity and higher concentration of oxygen vacancies as compared to LSM at lower operating temperature leading to favorable reduction kinetics. However, the presence of cobalt results in higher cost, higher thermal expansion co-efficient (TEC) mismatch and most importantly leads to rapid degradation. Various elements like strontium, cobalt, cerium, chromium, or zirconium accumulate or deposit at the electrode-electrolyte interface, which results in sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). These elements react to form secondary phases that have lower ionic and electronic conductivity, cover active reaction sites, and eventually lead to cell and system deterioration. Over the past decade, several studies have focused on preventative and protective measures to prolong SOFC lifetime which includes novel fabrication techniques, introduction of new layers, addition of thin films to block the cation transport. Such efforts to prevent the formation of insulating phases and decomposition of the cathode have resulted in a remarkable improvement in long-term stability. A wide range of macromolecules can undergo phase separation, forming biomolecular condensates in living cells. These membraneless organelles are typically highly dynamic, formed reversibly, and carry out essential functions in biological systems. Crucially, however, a further liquid-to-solid transition of the condensates can lead to irreversible pathological aggregation and cellular dysfunction associated with the onset and development of neurodegenerative diseases. Despite the importance of this liquid-to-solid transition of proteins, the mechanism by which it is initiated in normally functional condensates is unknown. Here we show, by measuring the changes in structure, dynamics, and mechanics in time and space, that single-component FUS condensates do not uniformly convert to a solid gel, but rather that liquid and gel phases coexist simultaneously within the same condensate, resulting in highly inhomogeneous structures. Furthermore, our results show that this transition originates at the interface between the condensate and the dilute continuous phase, and once initiated, the gelation process propagates toward the center of the condensate. To probe such spatially inhomogeneous rheology during condensate aging, we use a combination of established micropipette aspiration experiments together with two optical techniques, spatial dynamic mapping and reflective confocal dynamic speckle microscopy. These results reveal the importance of the spatiotemporal dimension of the liquid-to-solid transition and highlight the interface of biomolecular condensates as a critical element in driving pathological protein aggregation.

In recent years, vacancy-ordered halide double perovskites have emerged as promising non-toxic and stable alternatives for their lead-based counterparts in optoelectronic applications. In particular, vacancy ordered Cs 2 PtI 6 has emerged as a star material because of its high absorption coefficient, band gap of 1.37 eV, and long minority carrier lifetime. Despite substantial experimental research on this new class of material, theoretical simulations of their device properties remain scarce. In this work, a novel n-i-p device architecture (FTO/SnO 2 /Cs 2 PtI 6 /MoO 3 /C) is theoretically investigated using a solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS-1D). Theoretical investigations are carried out in order to optimize the device performance structure by varying the perovskite and selective charge transport layer thickness, absorber and interface defect density, operating temperature, back contact, series and shunt resistance, respectively. The optimized device showed an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.52% at 300 K, which is higher than the previously reported values. Subsequent analysis of the device's spectral response indicated that it possessed 98.9% quantum efficiency (QE) and was visibly active. Introduction Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common primary hepatic cancer. Its early diagnosis can aid in its treatment by curative means such as surgery or ablation. Advanced-stage diagnosis limits these treatment options, and such cases can be treated with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) and drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) are usually used, and follow-up response is evaluated using modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (mRECIST) criteria. This study was done to compare the treatment response of cTACE and DEB-TACE in patients with HCC. Materials and methods A retrospective review of electronic medical records of all patients diagnosed with HCC from January 2021 to August 2022 who underwent cTACE or DEB-TACE was undertaken at the Department of Interventional Radiology, Indus Hospital and Health Network. Both male and female patients aged 18 years or above with Child-Pugh class A and B were included. DEB-TACE or cTACE was performed by a fellowship-trained interventional radiologist, and the response was evaluated at six weeks follow-up using mRECIST criteria. Results A total of 129 patients were included in this study, with a mean age of 54.1 ± 10.8 years. The mean size of HCC was 3.1 ± 1.7 cm. Seventy-eight (60.5%) patients underwent cTACE, and 51 (39.5%) underwent DEB-TACE. Out of the 78 patients who underwent cTACE, complete response (CR) was found in 28 (35.9%), partial response (PR) was found in 33 (42.3%), stable disease (SD) was found in 12 (15.4%), and progressive disease (PD) was found in five (6.4%) patients. Of the 51 patients who underwent DEB-TACE, CR was found in 13 (25.5%), PR was found in 20 (39.2%), SD was found in 11 (21.6%), and PD was found in seven (13.7%) patients. The principal explanation behind the energy emergency is rapidly increasing the use of hydrocarbon resources. Thus, the use of renewable resources is essential to overcome this dilemma. The consumption of hydrocarbon fuels and their discharge has destructive consequences on our surroundings. Third-generation photovoltaic (solar) cells are latest encouraging option in solar cells. Currently, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) utilize organic (natural and synthetic) dye and inorganic (ruthenium) as a sensitizer. The nature of this dye combined with different variables has brought about a change in its use. Natural dyes are a feasible alternative in comparison to expensive and rare ruthenium dye owing to their low cast, easy utility, abundant supply of resources, and no environmental threat. In this review, the dyes generally utilized in DSSC are discussed. The DSSC criteria and components are explained, and the progress in inorganic and natural dyes is monitored. Chikungunya fever is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and has drawn substantial attention in recent years. So far, no effective treatment is available in the form of drugs or vaccines. In this study, we aimed to screen some drugs against the pathogenic Chikungunya virus through a molecular docking approach. As a fact, the spike E2 protein plays an important role in viral attachment to the human host cell, binding to a cell receptor MXRA8. The molecules screened for in-silico interaction against MXRA8 were selected with top hit based on binding affinity. The existing intermolecular bonds were investigated further in the active site of the protein that interacts with the top-hit ligands. Gambogic acid (guttic acid) was depicted as the furthermost potential inhibitor when compared to the others it had the lowest binding affinity (-10.9 kcal/mol). Aging is linked to the deterioration of many physical and cognitive abilities and is the leading risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. The growing aging population is a significant healthcare problem globally that researchers must investigate to better understand the underlying aging processes. Advances in microarrays and sequencing techniques have resulted in deeper analyses of diverse essential genomes (e.g., mouse, human, and rat) and their corresponding cell types, their organ-specific transcriptomes, and the tissue involved in aging. Traditional gene controllers such as DNA- and RNA-binding proteins significantly influence such programs, causing the need to sort out long non-coding RNAs, a new class of powerful gene regulatory elements. However, their functional significance in the aging process and senescence has yet to be investigated and identified. Several recent researchers have associated the initiation and development of senescence and aging in mammals with several well-reported and novel long non-coding RNAs. Background: The effects of chronic pancreatitis (CP) on pregnancy and vice versa have not been studied well. We aimed to study the impact of CP on pregnancy-related outcomes and the effect of pregnancy on clinical profile of CP., Study and Goals: We did a retrospective analysis of all female patients of CP of child-bearing age (above 18 y). The pregnancy-related outcomes of patients with CP were compared with the age-matched 115 controls from the low-risk pregnancy group identified using a simplified antepartum high-risk pregnancy scoring form. The clinical course of CP during pregnancy was compared with the pre-pregnancy course., Results: Among the 338 eligible patients, 46 patients were included after exclusions. All these 46 patients had at least 1 conception and 41 had at least 1 completed pregnancy with a total of 117 conceptions and 96 completed pregnancies. The pregnancy-related outcomes in patients with CP like abortions (21.7% vs. 11.3%; P =0.087), preterm deliveries (14.6% vs. 10.4%; P =0.47), antepartum course (82.7% vs. 82.6%; P =0.58), stillbirths (4.9% vs. 4.3%; P =0.88), cesarean section (36.6% vs. 34%; P =0.849) were comparable with controls. There was overall improvement in the severity and frequency of pain during pregnancy as compared with the pre-pregnancy symptoms ( P =0.001)., Conclusion: CP is not associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Aim: To compare and evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy against Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) between a mix of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH) 2 ] powder and normal saline, a mix of Ca(OH) 2 powder and 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) gluconate solution, a mix of triple antibiotic powder (TAP) and normal saline, and mix of TAP and 2% CHX gluconate solution., Materials and Methods: A total of 60 teeth were included in the study. The first sample (S1) was collected after access opening from the widest canal of the tooth by inserting sterile absorbable paper point no 20 up to the full length of the canal for 1 minute. The second sample (S2) was collected after the chemomechanical preparation and irrigation. After that, subjects were randomly divided into four groups-group I-a mix of Ca(OH) 2 and normal saline; group II-a mix of Ca(OH) 2 and 2% CHX; group III-a mix of TAP and normal saline; and group IV-a mix of TAP and 2% CHX. Assigned intracanal medicaments were placed in the canals, and the teeth were temporarily sealed with a temporary restorative material. On the 7th day, canals were reopened and irrigated, and a third bacteriological sample (S3) was taken out. Objective: To develop and validate an updated lung injury prediction score for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (c-LIPS) tailored for predicting acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in COVID-19., Patients and Methods: This was a registry-based cohort study using the Viral Infection and Respiratory Illness Universal Study. Hospitalized adult patients between January 2020 and January 2022 were screened. Patients who qualified for ARDS within the first day of admission were excluded. Development cohort consisted of patients enrolled from participating Mayo Clinic sites. The validation analyses were performed on remaining patients enrolled from more than 120 hospitals in 15 countries. The original lung injury prediction score (LIPS) was calculated and enhanced using reported COVID-19-specific laboratory risk factors, constituting c-LIPS. The main outcome was ARDS development and secondary outcomes included hospital mortality, invasive mechanical ventilation, and progression in WHO ordinal scale., Results: The derivation cohort consisted of 3710 patients, of whom 1041 (28.1%) developed ARDS. The c-LIPS discriminated COVID-19 patients who developed ARDS with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.79 compared with original LIPS (AUC, 0.74; P<.001) with good calibration accuracy (Hosmer-Lemeshow P=.50). Despite different characteristics of the two cohorts, the c-LIPS's performance was comparable in the validation cohort of 5426 patients (15.9% ARDS), with an AUC of 0.74; and its discriminatory performance was significantly higher than the LIPS (AUC, 0.68; P<.001). Serum Magnesium plays a significant role in different diabetic complications. This comparative cross sectional study was conducted to evaluate serum magnesium levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) with and without nephropathy. A total of 182 diabetic patients (91 with nephropathy and 91 without nephropathy) were included. Odds ratio were calculated and Mann Whitney U test was used to compare quantitative variables; p<0.05 was considered significant. The results showed that 64/91 (70.3%) patients with nephropathy had hypomagnesaemia as compared to 21/91 (23.07%) patients without nephropathy. The risk of hypomagnesaemia was higher in patients with nephropathy than without nephropathy (Odds ratio 2.7 vs 0.34). Median magnesium levels (1.73 mg/dl) were lower in patients with nephropathy as compared to patients without nephropathy (2.09 mg/dl), p<0.01. It is concluded that magnesium levels were significantly lower in patients with diabetic nephropathy as compared to without nephropathy.

Introduction: Quantitative fecal fat estimation is the gold standard test to diagnose steatorrhea (fecal fat >7 g/day) in chronic pancreatitis (CP), but cumbersome and inconvenient. So, fecal elastase-1 (FE) is proposed as a good alternative but the data on the diagnostic utility of FE to diagnose steatorrhea is variable., Methods: This retrospective study included adult CP patients evaluated with both 24-h fecal-fat and FE tests within a 3-month period. The objective was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of FE to diagnose steatorrhea and to evaluate the FE progression over 9-month period., Results: Among the 147 included patients, the frequency of steatorrhea (fecal fat >7 g/day) was 34%. The sensitivity, specificity, and negative likelihood ratio (LR) of FE was 90%, 28.9% and 0.35 at cut-off of <100 μg/g stool to diagnose steatorrhea; and 96%, 11.3% and 0.35 at cut-off of <200 μg/g stool, respectively. The optimal cut-off of FE was <20 on receiver operating characteristic curve (sensitivity 66%; specificity 69%; positive LR 2.14). There was no statistically significant variation in FE levels over 9 months interval among a hundred patients., Conclusion: Compared to FE ≥ 200 μg/g stool, FE ≥ 100 can used to exclude steatorrhea (better specificity and negative LR). FE < 20 alone cannot replace fecal fat estimation to confirm steatorrhea but to be interpreted with clinical features. The formation of biomolecular condensates through phase separation from proteins and nucleic acids is emerging as a spatial organisational principle used broadly by living cells. Many such biomolecular condensates are not, however, homogeneous fluids, but possess an internal structure consisting of distinct sub-compartments with different compositions. Notably, condensates can contain compartments that are depleted in the biopolymers that make up the condensate. Here, we show that such double-emulsion condensates emerge via dynamically arrested phase transitions. The combination of a change in composition coupled with a slow response to this change can lead to the nucleation of biopolymer-poor droplets within the polymer-rich condensate phase. Our findings demonstrate that condensates with a complex internal architecture can arise from kinetic, rather than purely thermodynamic driving forces, and provide more generally an avenue to understand and control the internal structure of condensates in vitro and in vivo., (© 2023. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the diagnostic performances of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) for discriminating between benign and malignant salivary gland tumors (SGTs)., Materials and Methods: Sixty-seven patients with 71 SGTs who underwent MRI examination at 3 Tesla were included. There were 34 men and 37 women with a mean age of 57 ± 17 (SD) years (age range: 20-90 years). SGTs included 21 malignant tumors (MTs) and 50 benign SGTs (33 pleomorphic adenomas [PAs] and 17 Warthin's tumors [WTs]). For each SGT, DWI and IVIM parameters, mean, skewness, and kurtosis of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), pure diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo-diffusion coefficient (D*) and perfusion volume fraction (f) were calculated and further compared between SGTs using univariable analysis. Areas under the curves (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic of significant parameters were compared using the Delong test., Results: Significant differences in ADC mean , D mean and D* mean were found between SGTs (P < 0.001). The highest AUC values were obtained for ADC mean (0.949) for identifying PAs and D* mean (0.985) for identifying WTs and skewness and kurtosis did not outperform mean. To discriminate benign from malignant SGTs with thresholds set to maximize Youden index, IVIM and DWI produced accuracies of 85.9% (61/71; 95% CI: 75.6-93.0) and 77.5% (55/71; 95% CI: 66.0-86.5) but misdiagnosed MTs as benign in 28.6% (6/21) and 61.9% (13/21) of SGTs, respectively. After maximizing specificity to 100% for benign SGTs, the accuracies of IVIM and DWI decreased to 76.1% (54/71; 95% CI: 64.5-85.4) and 64.8% (46/71; 95% CI: 52.5-75.8) but no MTs were misdiagnosed as benign. IVIM and DWI correctly diagnosed 66.0% (33/50) and 50.0% (25/50) of benign SGTs and 46.5% (33/71) and 35.2% (25/71) of all SGTs, respectively., Conclusion: IVIM is more accurate than DWI for discriminating between benign and malignant SGTs because of its advantage in detecting WTs. This study examines long-term connection and short-term dynamics concerning ecological footprint and six independent variables, named fossil fuel consumption, energy consumption, financial depth, trade, GDP, and ICT for Pakistan's duration from 1960 to 2019. The "QARDL-quantile autoregressive distributed lag" technique is used for time series and panel estimation. The QARDL model exhibits the connection between variables over the quantiles range, reflecting varying stages of Pakistan's ecological footprint. The results exhibit noticeable quantile-varying co-integration connection among ecological footprint and six independent variables. The results accentuate the significant influence of energy consumption, strong financial position, economic growth, and ICT technologies on ecological well-being, which assists in understanding short and long-term impact on the environment in Pakistan., (© 2022. We proposed a novel approach based on a complementary split-ring resonator metamaterial in a two-port MIMO antenna, giving high gain, multiband results with miniature size. We have also analyzed a circular disk metasurface design. The designs are also defected using ground structure by reducing the width of the ground plane to 8 mm and etching all other parts of the ground plane. The electric length of the proposed design is 0.5λ × 0.35λ × 0.02λ. The design results are also investigated for a different variation of complementary split-ring resonator ring sizes. The inner and outer ring diameters are varied to find the optimized solution for enhanced output performance parameters. Good isolation is also achieved for both bands. The gain and directivity results are also presented. The results are compared for isolation, gain, structure size, and the number of ports. The compact, multiband, high gain and high isolation design can apply to WiMAX, WLAN, and satellite communication applications.

The current study investigates a nonequilibrium and nonlinear two-dimensional lumped kinetic transport model of nonisothermal reactive liquid chromatography, considering the Bi-Langmuir adsorption isotherm, heterogeneous reaction rates, radial and axial concentration variations, and the adsorption and reaction enthalpies. The mathematical models of packed bed chromatographic processes are expressed by a highly nonlinear system of coupled partial differential algebraic equations connecting the phenomena of convection, diffusion, and reaction, for mass and energy balance, the differential algebraic equations for mass balance in the solid phase, and the algebraical expressions for the adsorption isotherms and for the reaction rates. The nonlinearity of the reaction term and the adsorption isotherm preclude the derivation of an analytical solution for the model equations. For this reason, a semidiscrete, high-resolution, finite-volume technique is extended and employed in this study to obtain the numerical solution. Several consistency checks are performed to evaluate the model predictions and analyze the precision of the proposed numerical scheme. A number of heterogeneously catalyzed stoichiometric reactions are numerically simulated to examine reactor performance under the influence of temperature and Bi-Langmuir adsorption dynamics, the level of coupling between mass and energy fronts, and to study the effects of various critical parameters. The assembly of biomolecules into condensates is a fundamental process underlying the organisation of the intracellular space and the regulation of many cellular functions. Mapping and characterising phase behaviour of biomolecules is essential to understand the mechanisms of condensate assembly, and to develop therapeutic strategies targeting biomolecular condensate systems. A central concept for characterising phase-separating systems is the phase diagram. Phase diagrams are typically built from numerous individual measurements sampling different parts of the parameter space. However, even when performed in microwell plate format, this process is slow, low throughput and requires significant sample consumption. To address this challenge, we present here a combinatorial droplet microfluidic platform, termed PhaseScan, for rapid and high-resolution acquisition of multidimensional biomolecular phase diagrams. Using this platform, we characterise the phase behaviour of a wide range of systems under a variety of conditions and demonstrate that this approach allows the quantitative characterisation of the effect of small molecules on biomolecular phase transitions., (© 2022. There is a paucity of literature regarding administrative approvals required for clinical studies during a pandemic. We aimed to evaluate variation in duration of administrative approvals within the Viral Infection and Respiratory illness Universal Study (VIRUS): A Global COVID-19 Registry., Design Setting and Subjects: Survey analysis of 188 investigators who participated in the VIRUS: COVID-19 registry, a prospective, observational global registry database of 287 sites., Interventions: None., Measurements and Main Results: For each study site approved through December 8, 2020, we assessed the duration in days: 1) from institutional review board (IRB) submission to IRB approval, 2) from IRB approval to Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) access, 3) from REDCap access to first patient data entry in REDCap, and 4) total duration from IRB submission to first patient data entry in REDCap. Analysis of variance and Wilcoxon rank-sum test were used to compare time durations. Of 287 sites, 188 sites (United States = 155, non-United States = 33) provided complete administrative data. There was considerable variability in duration from IRB submission to first patient data entry with median (interquartile range) of 28 days (16-50 d), with differences not significantly different by country (United States: 30 [17-50] vs non-United States: 23 d [8-46 d]; p = 0.08) or previous "multisite trial experience" (experienced: 27 [15-51] vs not experienced: 29 d [13-47 d]; p = 0.67). The U.S. sites had a higher proportion of female principal investigators ( n = 77; 50%), compared with non-U.S. sites ( n = 7; 21%; p = 0.002). Non-U.S. sites had a significantly shorter time to first patient data entry after REDCap access: 7 (1-28) versus 3 days (1-6 d) ( p = 0.02)., Conclusions: In this Society of Critical Care Medicine global VIRUS: COVID-19 Registry, we identified considerable variability in time from IRB submission to first patient data entry with no significant differences by country or prior multicenter trial experience. The lack of a consistent MRI radiomic signature, partly due to the multitude of initial feature analyses, limits the widespread clinical application of radiomics for the discrimination of salivary gland tumors (SGTs). This study aimed to identify the optimal radiomics feature category and MRI sequence for characterizing SGTs, which could serve as a step towards obtaining a consensus on a radiomics signature. Preliminary radiomics models were built to discriminate malignant SGTs (n = 34) from benign SGTs (n = 57) on T1-weighted (T1WI), fat-suppressed (FS)-T2WI and contrast-enhanced (CE)-T1WI images using six feature categories. The discrimination performances of these preliminary models were evaluated using 5-fold-cross-validation with 100 repetitions and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The differences between models’ performances were identified using one-way ANOVA. Results show that the best feature categories were logarithm for T1WI and CE-T1WI and exponential for FS-T2WI, with AUCs of 0.828, 0.754 and 0.819, respectively. These AUCs were higher than the AUCs obtained using all feature categories combined, which were 0.750, 0.707 and 0.774, respectively (p < 0.001). The highest AUC (0.846) was obtained using a combination of T1WI + logarithm and FS-T2WI + exponential features, which reduced the initial features by 94.0% (from 1015 × 3 to 91 × 2). CE-T1WI did not improve performance. Using one feature category rather than all feature categories combined reduced the number of initial features without compromising radiomic performance.
