Background:  In young women with venous thromboembolism (VTE) related to weak transient risk factors, it remains unknown whether stress levels and intimate partner violence (IPV) are associated with recurrence. The VTE-WEAK study aims to investigate the association between perceived stress and IPV with a recurrence of VTE in women with a first episode of VTE due to combined oral contraceptives, pregnancy-puerperium, minor trauma/fracture, brief surgery, infection or brief immobility, and not using antithrombotic prophylaxis., Material and Methods:  We performed a multicenter, international, observational, retrospective study on women referred for thrombophilia screening who were subsequently monitored. Patients were aged 18 to 55 years old and free of high-risk thrombophilia. When a recurrence of VTE was suspected for the first time, the perceived stress level and IPV were evaluated using self-administrated PSS-10 and Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST) questionnaires., Results:  We monitored 7,754 women over 43,880 patients-years. A first suspected recurrence occurred in 4,772 women, among whom 1,316 had an objectively confirmed recurrence. The perceived stress level and an IPV situation were both independent risk factors for recurrence: moderate stress: adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.630 (1.415-2.468); high perceived stress: aOR 10.03 (7.528-13.36); IPV: 1.953 (1.546-2.468), p  < 0.0001., Conclusion:  The perceived level of stress and IPV are associated with a recurrence of VTE when suspected. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) targeting women is probably underestimated during a woman's lifetime. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a multifactorial disease associated with haemostasis-activating conditions. Minor injuries can trigger VTE., Objectives: We aimed to look for an association between VTE and IPV in women taking combined oral contraceptives (COCs) METHODS: We performed a multicentric, international, matched case-control study. Patients were women with a first VTE associated with COC intake. Controls were women taking COCs undergoing regular gynaecological check-ups. Patients and Controls were matched for country, age, length of COC intake and type (997 pairs). IPV was evaluated using the WAST self-administrated questionnaire., Results: IPV, defined as a WAST score value at least 5, was diagnosed in 33 Controls (3.3 %) and 109 patients (10.9 %), conditional odds ratio (OR): 3.586, 95 % confidence interval (2.404-5.549), p < 0.0001. After multivariate analysis, the adjusted OR was 3.720 (2.438-5.677), p < 0.0001. Sensitivity analysis using increasing WAST score thresholds confirmed the association., Conclusions: A first VTE in women taking COCs is associated with IPV. This association can have strong human consequences but also raises significant medical issues, for instance on the haemorrhagic risk of anticoagulant treatments in abused women. Major and minor trauma increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), but violence against young women is not reported as a precipitating factor for thrombosis. Here, we report 20 cases of first VTE events in women of childbearing age after evidence of intimate partner violence. Other risk factors for VTE were often associated. In most cases, women did not report this state of violence at the first consultation and their doctors did not suspect it. We imagine that it is an underdiagnosed situation and should call for a systematic evaluation. Anticancer treatments induce vulvovaginal complications that alter the quality of life and sexuality of patients. New technologies, such as photobiomodulation, could address this problem, for which few effective therapeutic solutions exist. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of patients seeking treatment and to observe the effects of photobiomodulation. This is a prospective cohort of patients treated for cancer, in failure of first-line medical treatment, managed at the University Hospital of Nîmes. The history, symptoms and impact of the disorders on their quality of life were collected. At follow-up, improvement was assessed using the PGI-I and FSFI questionnaires. Twenty-eight patients were treated. They were all menopausal, half of them after anticancer treatments [chemotherapy (78%), radiotherapy (36%), hormone therapy (36%)]. The main symptom reported was vaginal dryness (72%). Seventy-one percent of patients (n=20) felt that their daily life was affected≥8/10. All patients had sexual dysfunction. Twenty-two patients received at least 6 sessions of photobiomodulation. Seventy-two percent (n=18) of patients felt better or much better after treatment (PGI-I≤2). The median improvement estimated by the patients was 65% (Q1=50%; Q3=72.5%). There was also a significant clinical improvement. No serious adverse events were reported. Due to the small number of patients in a heterogeneous population with no control group, we cannot extrapolate our results. However, the objective was to assess the status of these pathologies and the contribution of photobiomodulation in patients who have failed first-line treatment; and these results are encouraging., (Copyright © 2023 Société Française du Cancer. Malignancies can be associated with positive antiphospholipid antibodies but the incidence of cancer among women with the purely obstetric form of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is currently unknown. Our aim was to investigate the comparative incidence of cancers in women with a history of obstetric APS within a referral university hospital-based cohort (NOH-APS cohort). We performed a 17-year observational study of 1,592 non-thrombotic women with three consecutive spontaneous abortions before the 10 th week of gestation or one fetal death at or beyond the 10 th week of gestation. We compared the incidence of cancer diagnosis during follow-up among the cohort of women positive for antiphospholipid antibodies (n=517), the cohort of women carrying the F5 rs6025 or F2 rs1799963 polymorphism (n=279) and a cohort of women with negative thrombophilia screening results (n=796). The annualized rate of cancer was 0.300% (0.20%-0.44%) for women with obstetric APS and their cancer risk was substantially higher than that of women with negative thrombophilia screening [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 2.483; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.27-4.85]. The computed standardized incidence ratio for women with obstetric APS was 2.89; 95% CI: 1.89-4.23. Among antiphospholipid antibodies, lupus anticoagulant was associated with incident cancers (aHR 2.608; 95% CI: 1.091-6.236). Objective: To study the correlation between expired air carbon (EACO) and urinary cotinine, and to determine the impact of tobacco smoking on in vitro fertilization (IVF) results., Patients and Methods: We studied prospectively 221 patients in our ART center from October 2002 to October 2004: 51 active smokers, 85 passive smokers, and 85 non-smokers. Patients were classified into active, passive smokers, or non-smokers, based on a questionnaire. We measured urinary cotinine and EACO on the embryo transfer day and we recorded the IVF parameters., Results: Two hundred and twenty-one patients were included. We observed a 17.2% reduction of estradiolemy (P=0.05), a 1.5% reduction of pregnancies (NS), a 7.8% reduction of infants born alive (NS), a 28.5% reduction of twin pregnancies (P=0.06), as well as a 10% increase of miscarriages (NS) in the active smokers in comparison with non-smokers (the same trends were observed between active and passive smokers). EACO and urinary cotinine were well correlated. There was a negative correlation between estradiolemy and urinary cotinine (R=-0.15, P=0.02)., Discussion and Conclusion: Tobacco smoking intensity may be dilatory on IVF results. There is a high correlation between EACO and urinary cotinine. Other larger studies would probably obtain results more statistically significant.

The real innovation of multislice helical CT is its technology of detectors. These detectors may be isotropic, anisotropic or hybrid according to the manufacturers. Whatever the concept in terms of geometric resolution or evolutivity, all of them provide similar implementations and image quality. Data transfer and computer performances are as much as eight times higher than those of single slice CTs. Large pitches are routinely available. The speed of workstation softwares has been dramatically increased. Acquisition times have also been reduced like on new single-detector CTs. According to the machine, a 360 degrees rotation of the tube is obtained in 0.5 to 0.8 sec. Evolution more than revolution, there is need for further clinical expertise to know whether this new technology is able to substitute for other imaging modalities. In the meantime, what is sure is that it will generate new clinical applications.

A sub-capsular haematoma of the liver is a rare but very serious complication of pregnancy. We report a case of a primipara whose pregnancy was first complicated by hypertension, then by a haematoma of the liver at the 28th week of amenorrhoea. It was diagnosed because of the clinical symptoms associated with the hypertension and a pain in the right hypochondrium and nausea. The diagnosis of haematoma of the liver was made before rupture and confirmed by ultrasound of the liver and by tomodensitometry made it possible to avoid operating on the liver during the laparotomy that was carried out to terminate the pregnancy. Regular X-ray follow-ups showed that the lesion had regressed in six months. MRI investigation of the parenchyma of the liver showed no cause of the lesions. If there is even the slightest suspicion of a haematoma of the liver in pregnancy, ultrasound nowadays should be carried out because it is indispensable to make the diagnosis.
