Background/objectives: The relationship between macronutrient intake and cognitive decline in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains underexplored., Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the association between the protein-to-carbohydrate energy ratio (%E:P) and cognitive impairment among 192 elderly T2DM patients. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Self-Administered Gerocognitive Exam (SAGE), while dietary intake data, including (%E:P), was gathered using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire., Results: Participants had a mean age of 71 ± 6 years, 46.4% were female, and the median BMI was 30 ± 4 kg/m 2 . After adjusting for confounding variables, patients in the highest (%E:P) tertile showed significantly higher MoCA and SAGE scores compared to those in the lowest tertile ( p < 0.005). We identified an optimal (%E:P) threshold of 0.375 for predicting cognitive impairment, with a sensitivity of 53% and specificity of 64%., Conclusions: These findings suggest that a lower (%E:P) ratio may be a risk factor for cognitive impairment in elderly T2DM patients. Monitoring this ratio may serve as an early detection tool for cognitive deterioration. Moreover, current protein intake recommendations for older adults with T2DM may be insufficient to prevent cognitive impairment. The effect of liver fibrosis on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients is unclear. Therefore, we performed a prospective cross-sectional study on 219 patients with T2DM and older than 60 years to evaluate the association between liver fibrosis, liver steatosis, and cognitive impairment. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to screen for MCI or dementia. Liver fibrosis was estimated using the non-invasive Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score, and liver steatosis was assessed with the hepatic steatosis index. The mean age was 71 ± 6 years, 47% were women and according to MoCA cut-off values, 53.88% had MCI and 16.43% had dementia. A moderate or high risk of advanced fibrosis was significantly higher in patients with MCI or dementia compared to those with normal cognition ( p < 0.001). After adjusting for confounders, a FIB-4 score greater than 1.54 was associated with MCI or dementia ( p = 0.039). Multivariate analysis identified age over 70.5 years, antiplatelet medication use, and a FIB-4 score above 1.54 as the most relevant risk factors. Liver fibrosis, but not liver steatosis, is associated with MCI or dementia in older T2DM patients, suggesting that FIB-4 score might be a simple biomarker for the detection of cognitive impairment.

This is a report on a pilot study that tests the feasibility of assembling photonic metamaterials (PMs) using light gradient forces. Following a strategy that works like modular construction, light gradient forces, produced by a tightly focused, 1D standing wave optical trap, time-multiplexed across a 2D lattice are used to assemble voxels consisting of prefabricated, monodispersed nanoparticles (NPs) with radii ranging from 30 to 500 nm into 3D structures on a hydrogel scaffold. Hundreds of NPs can be manipulated concurrently into a complex heterogeneous voxel this way, and then the process can be repeated by stitching together voxels to form a metamaterial of any size, shape, and constituency although imperfectly. Imperfections introduce random phase shifts and amplitude variations that can have an adverse effect on the band structure. Regardless, PMs are created this way using two different dielectric NPs, polystyrene and rutile, and then the near-infrared performance for each is analyzed with angle-, wavelength-, and polarization-dependent reflection spectroscopy. The cross-polarized spectra show evidence of a resonance peak. Interestingly, whereas the line shape from the polystyrene array is symmetric, the rutile array is not, which may be indicative of Fano resonance. Type 2 diabetes mellitus has a worldwide prevalence of 10.5% in the adult population (20-79 years), and by 2045, the prevalence is expected to keep rising to one in eight adults living with diabetes. Mild cognitive impairment has a global prevalence of 19.7% in adults aged 50 years. Both conditions have shown a concerning increase in prevalence rates over the past 10 years, highlighting a growing public health challenge. Future forecasts indicate that the prevalence of dementia (no estimations done for individuals with mild cognitive impairment) is expected to nearly triple by 2050. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for the development of cognitive impairment, and such impairment increase the likelihood of poor glycemic/metabolic control. High phytate intake has been shown to be a protective factor against the development of cognitive impairment in observational studies. Diary phytate intake might reduce the micro- and macrovascular complications of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus through different mechanisms. We describe the protocol of the first trial (the PHYND trial) that evaluate the effect of daily phytate supplementation over 56 weeks with a two-arm double-blind placebo-controlled study on the progression of mild cognitive impairment, cerebral iron deposition, and retinal involvement in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our hypothesis proposes that phytate, by inhibiting advanced glycation end product formation and chelating transition metals, will improve cognitive function and attenuate the progression from Mild Cognitive Impairment to dementia in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus and mild cognitive impairment. In order to contribute to the shift from petro-based chemistry to biobased chemistry, necessary to minimize the environmental impacts of the chemical industry, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol (4-vinyl guaiacol, 4VG) was used to synthesize a platform of biobased monomers. Thus, nine biobased monomers were successfully prepared. The synthesis procedures were investigated through the green metrics calculations in order to quantify the sustainability of our approaches. Their radical homopolymerization in toluene solution initiated by 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) was studied and the effect of residual 4VG as a radical inhibitor on the kinetics of polymerization was also explored. The new homopolymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR) spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography and thermal analyses (dynamical scanning calorimetry DSC, thermal gravimetric analysis TGA). By varying the length of the alkyl ester or ether group of the 4VG derivatives, homopolymers with T g ranging from 117 °C down to 5 °C were obtained. These new biobased monomers could be implemented in radical copolymerization as substitutes to petro-based monomers to decrease the carbon footprint of the resulting copolymers for various applications.

The implementation of centralized drinking water treatment systems necessitates lower operational costs and improved biopolymer removal during ultrafiltration (UF), which can be afforded by gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration. However, prior to implementing GDM filtration in centralized systems, biofilm growth in compacted membrane configurations, such as inside-out hollow fiber (HF), and its impact on permeate flux need to be investigated. To this end, we operated modules with distinct limits on available space for biofilm growth: (1) outside-in 1.5 mm 7-capillary HF (non-limited), (2) inside-out 1.5 mm 7-capillary HF (limited), and (3) inside-out 0.9 mm 7-capillary HF (very limited). Here, we observed that the lower the space available for biofilm growth, the lower the permeate flux. To improve GDM performance with inside-out HF, we applied daily shear stress to the biofilm surface with forward flush (FF) or combined relaxation and forward flush (R+FF). We showed that applying shear stress to the biofilm surface was insufficient for controlling flux loss due to low available space for biofilm growth. At the experimental endpoint, we backwashed with a stepwise transmembrane pressure (TMP) increase or a single TMP on all inside-out HF modules, which removed the biofilm from its base. Afterwards, higher fluxes were yielded. We also showed that all modules exhibited a gradual increase in biopolymer removal followed by stabilization between 70 and 90%. Additionally, control of biofilm growth with surface shear stress did not affect biopolymer removal. In summary, the implementation of inside-out HF with GDM filtration is challenged by low available space for biofilm growth, but may be remedied with a regular backwash to remove biofilm from its base. The use of brewer`s yeast to replace textured soy protein (TSP) in burgers was investigated. Three formulations were made, corresponding to a control formulation with 4% TSP, a formulation containing 4% yeast cells in their natural state, and a formulation made with 4% mechanically ruptured yeast cells, which were characterized for the chemical, technological, and sensory properties. Significant differences were observed for pH and instrumental color between the formulations, with no changes in the visual color evaluation by the untrained assessors. The addition of yeast cells resulted in a higher cooking yield and lower reduction in diameter, contributing to maintaining the shape and juiciness of burgers, which is a positive aspect from the technological point of view. The TSP-based formulation presented higher overall appearance and flavor scores when compared with the other formulations, with no significant differences for the other sensory attributes. The results showed that debittering of yeast-cell biomass is required to remove hop resins and tannins before using in burgers, aimed to improve the product`s acceptance and the purchase intent. The objective of this research was to evaluate the immobilization of the enzyme β-galactosidase in a genipin-activated chitosan support. The influence of the number of spheres and substrate concentration on immobilization yield (IY) and enzyme activity (EA) was analyzed using experimental design. Thermal, operational and storage stabilities were assessed, and the enzymatic derivatives were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The TGA showed that the enzymatic derivatives kept their thermal behavior, and the SEM images revealed smooth surfaces in all the spheres. The optimized conditions for the immobilization process were 4.57 mg·mL -1 of spheres and a substrate concentration of 10 mM (IY = 84.13%; EA = 24.97 U·g -1 ). Thermal stability was enhanced at 10 and 37 °C, enabling four successive cycles of lactose hydrolysis in diluted UHT milk. Increased interest in the use of word embeddings, such as word representation, for biomedical named entity recognition (BioNER) has highlighted the need for evaluations that aid in selecting the best word embedding to be used. One common criterion for selecting a word embedding is the type of source from which it is generated; that is, general (e.g., Wikipedia, Common Crawl), or specific (e.g., biomedical literature). Using specific word embeddings for the BioNER task has been strongly recommended, considering that they have provided better coverage and semantic relationships among medical entities. To the best of our knowledge, most studies have focused on improving BioNER task performance by, on the one hand, combining several features extracted from the text (for instance, linguistic, morphological, character embedding, and word embedding itself) and, on the other, testing several state-of-the-art named entity recognition algorithms. The latter, however, do not pay great attention to the influence of the word embeddings, and do not facilitate observing their real impact on the BioNER task. For this reason, the present study evaluates three well-known NER algorithms (CRF, BiLSTM, BiLSTM-CRF) with respect to two corpora (DrugBank and MedLine) using two classic word embeddings, GloVe Common Crawl (of the general type) and Pyysalo PM + PMC (specific), as unique features. Furthermore, three contextualized word embeddings (ELMo, Pooled Flair, and Transformer) are compared in their general and specific versions. The aim is to determine whether general embeddings can perform better than specialized ones on the BioNER task. To this end, four experiments were designed. In the first, we set out to identify the combination of classic word embedding, NER algorithm, and corpus that results in the best performance. The second evaluated the effect of the size of the corpus on performance. The third assessed the semantic cohesiveness of the classic word embeddings and their correlation with respect to several gold standards; while the fourth evaluates the performance of general and specific contextualized word embeddings on the BioNER task. Results show that the classic general word embedding GloVe Common Crawl performed better in the DrugBank corpus, despite having less word coverage and a lower internal semantic relationship than the classic specific word embedding, Pyysalo PM + PMC; while in the contextualized word embeddings the best results are presented in the specific ones. We conclude, therefore, when using classic word embeddings as features on the BioNER task, the general ones could be considered a good option. Background: Cereal bars are a sweet-tasting, nutritious, and enjoyable source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Ingredients can be added to the formulation to improve certain characteristics, such as protein content. Some of these ingredients are derived from yeast from fermentation processes. This study aimed to add value to the residue resulting from the wine fermentation process (wine lees) by applying it in the formulation of cereal bars., Results: Three formulations of cereal bars with different concentrations of autolyzed yeast biomass were developed. The effect of the addition of biomass was investigated by chemical and sensorial analysis. The cereal bar with the highest concentration of autolyzed biomass (5%) showed the highest protein content (73.4 g kg -1 ). The findings regarding acceptance obtained by sensory analysis showed that the samples with 2.5% and 5% autolyzed biomass pleased consumers., Conclusions: Formulations of autolyzed biomass-based cereal bars have increased protein content as the autolyzed biomass concentration has increased. Moreover, the acceptance of the cereal bars with autolyzed biomass in concentrations of 2.5% and 5% was satisfactory. The objective of this study was to evaluate yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) from beer fermentation in its natural form (NY) and subjected to different processes of cellular ruptured [mechanical method using ultrasound (MRY) and modified autolysis using NaCl and ethanol (MAY)] regarding functional and digestibility properties, comparing them with textured soy protein (TSP). Ultrasound treatment resulted in 42% disruption efficiency and the micrographs obtained from scanning electron microscopy analysis showed important morphological modifications due to processes of cellular ruptured action. MRY cells presented more pronounced damage than LN, which suggests the rupture of the cell wall and exit of the internal material to the medium. NY, MRY, MAY, and TSP presented a very close composition concerning the protein content, ranging from 39.32 to 43.80% and moisture of 0.07-0.14%. In vitro digestibility of brewing yeast samples equated the digestibility of TSP (higher than 94%). Cellular disruption with ultrasound (MRY) caused an increase in foaming ability, stability and also oil retention capacity (8.82 mL of oil/g of protein). Modified autolysis (MAY) resulted in higher water holding capacity (14.50 g of water/g of protein) and index of water solubility (greater than 64%) with a decrease in their emulsifying properties. The highest water absorption capacity was presented by the TSP and NY. Therefore, in its different forms, yeast can be applied as a functional and technological ingredient in the food industry, with significant technological capabilities and potential applications.

The size of an ion affects everything from the structure of water to life itself. In this report, to gauge their size, ions dissolved in water are forced electrically through a sub-nanometer-diameter pore spanning a thin membrane and the current is measured. The measurements reveal an ion-selective conductance that vanishes in pores <0.24 nm in diameter-the size of a water molecule-indicating that permeating ions have a grossly distorted hydration shell. Analysis of the current noise power spectral density exposes a threshold, below which the noise is independent of current, and beyond which it increases quadratically. This dependence proves that the spectral density, which is uncorrelated below threshold, becomes correlated above it. The onset of correlations for Li + , Mg 2+ , Na + and K + -ions extrapolates to pore diameters of 0.13 ± 0.11 nm, 0.16 ± 0.11 nm, 0.22 ± 0.11 nm and 0.25 ± 0.11 nm, respectively-consonant with diameters at which the conductance vanishes and consistent with ions moving through the sub-nanopore with distorted hydration shells in a correlated way.

This study evaluated the production of cellulolytic enzymes from different agricultural residues. The crude enzyme extract produced was characterized and applied for saccharification of some agricultural residues. Maximum cellulolytic activities were obtained using soybean hulls. All enzymatic activities were highly stable at 40 °C at a pH range of 4.5-5.5. For stability at low temperatures, the enzyme extract was stored at freezing temperature and cooling for about 290 days without major loss of activity. The K m values found for total cellulase (FPase), endoglucanase (CMCase), and xylanase were 19.73 mg ml -1 , 0.65 mg ml -1 , and 22.64 mg ml -1 , respectively, and V max values were 0.82 mol min -1  mg -1 , 0.62 mol min -1  mg -1 , and 104.17 mol min -1  mg -1 to cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, and xylan, respectively. In the saccharification tests, the total amount of total reducing sugars (TRS) released from 1 g of soybean hulls catalyzed by the enzymes present in the crude enzyme extract was 0.16 g g -1 dry substrate.

The knowledge of pseudothrombocytopenia (PTCP) is important for the accuracy of a clinical assessment and for avoiding unnecessary treatment. An elderly patient was hospitalized with left lung pneumonia. Severe thrombocytopenia [platelet (PLT) number: 18 × 10 9 /L] without any clinical bleeding was found in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid blood collection tube. PLT measurement was repeated in various anticoagulant [sodium citrate, lithium heparin, disodium oxalate, hirudin, and magnesium sulfate (Mg-sulfate)] sample collection tubes and all of them showed thrombocytopenia except with Mg-sulfate. To the best of our knowledge, PTCP with five anticoagulant sample collection tubes has not been reported earlier.

Background: This study investigated the performance of a membrane reactor system for esterification of oleic acid and butyric acid with ethanol by Penicillium crustosum lipase using polyethersulfone membranes with molecular weight cut-offs of 30, 60 and 100 kDa at pressures up to 200 kPa., Results: The confinement of lipase with 60 and 100 kDa membranes showed the best results. The esterification of butyric acid in the membrane reactor and with free lipase showed higher conversions than those obtained with oleic acid, since the system operated with oleic acid was more subject to fouling and thus could not be run for repeated cycles., Conclusion: The confinement of lipase from P. crustosum in a membrane reactor was possible, resulting in the satisfactory conversion of butyric acid to ethyl butyrate with the possibility of reuse of the immobilized enzyme., (© 2014 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Lipases produced by a newly isolated Sporidiobolus pararoseus strain have potential catalytic ability for esterification reactions. After production, the enzymatic extracts (conventional crude and precipitated, 'CC' and 'CP', and industrial crude and precipitated, 'IC' e 'IP') were partially characterized. The enzymes presented, in general, higher specificity for short chain alcohols and fatty acids. The precipitated extract showed a good thermal stability, higher than that for crude enzymatic extracts. The 'CC' and 'CP' enzymes presented high activities after exposure to pH 6.5 and 40 °C. On the other hand, the 'IC' and 'IP' extracts kept their activities in a wide range of pH memory but presented preference for higher reaction temperatures. Preliminary studies of application of the crude lipase extract in the enzymatic production of geranyl propionate using geraniol and propionic acid as substrates in solvent-free system led to a reaction conversion of 42 ± 1.5%.

The lipase produced by a newly isolate Sporidiobolus pararoseus strain has potential catalysis ability for esterification reactions. In order to improve its synthetic activity, this work aimed at optimizing 'synthetic lipase' production by submerged fermentation of a conventional media based on peptone, yeast extract, NaCl and olive oil using experimental design technique. According to the results obtained in the first experimental design (2(4-1)), yeast extract and NaCl concentrations were tested to further optimization by response surface methodology. The maximum 'synthetic lipase' activity obtained was 26.9 U/mL in the optimized media (5.0, 6.8, 7.0 and 1.0% (wt/v) of peptone, yeast extract, NaCl and olive oil, respectively), representing a 6.36-fold increase compared to the initial medium. The time course of 'synthetic lipase' production in the optimized condition was evaluated in terms of synthetic activity, protease activity, biomass and total carbon and the maximum synthetic activity was observed during the stationary phase of growth.

Slot waveguides are very promising for optical sensing applications because of their peculiar spatial mode profile. In this paper we have carried out a detailed analysis of mode confinement properties in slot waveguides realized in very low refractive index materials. We show that the sensitivity of a slot waveguide is not directly related to the refractive index contrast of high and low materials forming the waveguide. Thus, a careful design of the structures allows the realization of high sensitivity devices even in very low refractive index materials (e.g., polymers) to be achieved. Advantages of low index dielectrics in terms of cost, functionalization and ease of fabrication are discussed while keeping both CMOS compatibility and integrable design schemes. Finally, applications of low index slot waveguides as substitute of bulky fiber capillary sensors or in ring resonator architectures are addressed. Theoretical results of this work are relevant to well established polymer technologies.

The main objective of this work was the isolation and screening of microorganisms with potential for producing lipases for the synthesis of fatty esters as well as evaluating the specificity of the enzymes produced, using different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and butanol) and fatty acids (oleic and lauric acids) as substrates. Promising biocatalysts for organic synthesis were obtained in this work. The isolated strains 69F and 161Y showed ability to efficiently catalyze the reaction for production of n-propyl oleate. Other strains can also be considered of potential interest, as 74F, 111Y, and 186Y. The future development of production using different substrates could result in cheap crude lipase of high importance to industrial applicability.

Aims: The objective of this work was to investigate the lipase production by a newly isolated Penicillium sp., using experimental design technique, in submerged fermentation using a medium based on peptone, yeast extract, NaCl and olive oil, as well as to characterize the crude enzymatic extracts obtained., Methods and Results: Lipase activity values of 9.5 U ml(-1) in 96 h of fermentation was obtained at the maximized operational conditions of peptone, yeast extract, NaCl and olive oil concentrations (g l(-1)) of 20.0, 5.0, 5.0 and of 10.0 respectively. The partial characterization of crude enzymatic extract obtained by submerged fermentation showed optimum activity at pH range from 4.9 to 5.5 and temperature from 37 degrees C to 42 degrees C. The crude extract maintained its initial activity at freezing temperatures up to 100 days., Conclusions: A newly isolated strain of Penicillium sp. used in this work yielded good lipase activities compared to the literature., Significance and Impact of the Study: The growing interest in lipase production is related to the potential biotechnological applications that these enzymes present. New lipase producers are relevant to finding enzymes with different catalytic properties of commercial interest could be obtained, without using genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Stress and anxiety of university science students (Chemistry) was evaluated in basal conditions and during exams using validated stress and anxiety questionnaires. The relations between the data obtained and various biochemical markers were established. Results showed that the evaluated students did not experience stress increase as a consequence of exams but suffered a significant increase in anxiety. The psychological findings agree with the urinary biomarkers studied. It is known that anxiety is related to partial magnesium reduction associated with a urinary magnesium excretion increase, as observed in the present data. Nevertheless, stress also correlates with a urinary calcium increase which was not detected in the present study.

Myocarditis is the most common cause of heart failure in children. We investigated viral etiology of myocarditis/dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in children and correlated molecular findings with pathologic and clinical data. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or reverse transcription (RT)-PCR were used to analyze 59 endomyocardial biopsies from 48 consecutive young (<18 yrs) patients (pts) with clinical and histologic diagnosis of myocarditis and DCM, employing primers designed to amplify specific sequences of various DNA and RNA viruses. Nucleic acids were successfully extracted in 41 pts and viral genomes were found in 20 (49%): 12 out of 26 pts (46%) with myocarditis, 6 out of 13 (46%) pts with DCM, and both patients with endocardial fibroelastosis. Enteroviruses were more common in DCM (72%), whereas adenoviruses and enteroviruses shared the same rate (36%) in myocarditis. The mumps virus genome was detected in the two pts with endocardial fibroelastosis. More diffuse inflammatory infiltrates and myocyte damage as well as more impaired left ventricular end diastolic volume and shortening fraction were noted in viral positive cases. PCR positive pts had a worse outcome, resulting in transplantation or death. Three out of 8 pts with viral myocarditis who underwent cardiac transplantation had recurrent PCR-proven graft viral infection. Viral myocarditis/DCM appeared to be a more severe disease than nonviral forms. Enteroviruses were more common in DCM, whereas adenoviruses were as frequent as enteroviruses in myocarditis. Persistence of viral infection was associated with disease deterioration. Viral myocarditis relapsed after transplantation.

The term calcium phosphate cement was introduced by Gruninger et al. (1). This type of cement can be prepared by reacting a calcium phosphate salt with an aqueous solution, which causes it to set by the crossing of the precipitated crystals. These cements offer a series of advantages that allow their use as grafts and substitutes of damaged parts of the bone system. However, these cements have low mechanical strength compared to human bones. This work studied the influence of the use of polyamide fibers in the mechanical properties of a calcium phosphate cement based on alpha-tricalcium phosphate as well as the mechanisms involved in the increase of mechanical strength. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the use of polymeric fibers to increase mechanical strength and the need for coupling agents for the effective performance of the fibers as reinforcement in these materials.

Recently, great attention has been paid to calcium phosphate cements, because of their advantages in comparison with conventional calcium phosphate bioceramics employed for bone repairing, regarding in situ handling, and shaping abilities. Nevertheless, the calcium phosphate cements exhibit relatively low mechanical strength. The aim of this work was the improvement of the compressive strength of alpha-tricalcium phosphate-based cement. The hydraulic setting reaction of this system produces a calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite phase suitable for bone repairing: alpha-Ca3(PO4)2 + H2O --> Ca9(HPO4)(PO4)5OH. Mechanical strength can be improved using technological solutions developed for other applications, such as Portland cement and dual-setting glass-ionomers, by using polymeric additives. The additives used in this work were sodium alginate, sodium polyacrylate, and an in situ polymerization system resulting in a polyacrylamide crosslinked hydrogel. Parameters evaluated were setting time, compressive strength before and after immersion in simulated body fluid, density, porosity, crystalline phases, and microstructure. Sodium alginate and sodium polyacrylate were deleterious to both setting time and mechanical strength. When the in situ polymerization system was added, two setting reactions progressed in parallel: the conventional hydraulic reaction and the copolymerization of acrylamide and crosslinking water-soluble monomers. The initial and final setting times of the "dual-setting" cement were 9 and 35 min, respectively, and they can be regulated varying the initiator, catalyst, and monomers concentrations. The initial compressive strength of the dual-setting cement (6.8 MPa at 0 h, and 15.2 MPa at 24 h) is higher than that of unmodified cement. The major crystalline phase after setting is hydroxyapatite. The dual-setting cement seems to be suitable for clinical applications in bone repairing and remodeling.
