Identifying the fibres in historical textiles presents a complex challenge due to the wide variety of plant, animal and early synthetic materials that have been used. Traditionally, this identification process involves sampling followed by either microscopic examination or ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. However, there are instances when sampling is restricted due to the good condition or significant value of the object under analysis. Additionally, the presence of leather components alongside textiles can further complicate the identification. This paper proposes a novel non-invasive method for fibre identification based on External Reflection (ER) FTIR spectroscopy, which has been rarely applied to textiles or leather. The current research demonstrates that ER-FTIR spectrum is a viable tool for fibre identification on both recent and historical textiles. The non-invasiveness of the analytical approach enables a comprehensive investigation without compromising the number or position of samples. Respect to ATR-FTIR spectra, the ER-FTIR spectra frequently exhibit an amplification of certain diagnostic bands, facilitating the identification of the various fibres examined in this study (cotton, hemp, viscose, silk, wool, leather, polyamide, acrylic, polyester). The extended spectral range (7500-375 cm -1 ) which is provided by ER-FTIR spectrometry also contains extra bands in the near infrared region, which can provide key information for the discrimination due to the lack of distortion phenomena. The technique was applied to the characterisation of textile materials coming from a collection of 10 traditional Japanese samurai armours spanning from the 16th to the 20th century (Museo delle Culture, Lugano, Switzerland). For the first time, the results provided a comprehensive overview of the textiles utilized in Japanese armours across various historical periods. Overall, the appearance of materials in samurai armours reflects the evolution of armour-making techniques and the influence of socio-cultural factors throughout Japanese history. Synthetic and semi-synthetic materials were easily detected, revealing the occurrence of a past conservation treatment or the early adoption of modern man-made materials in the manufacturing of traditional armours. The approach outlined in this case study can be applied to textile collections of various kinds, offering a reliable mean to discern the yarn composition and detect non-original components. Validating thermodynamic models is essential in experimental geosciences for exploring increasingly complex systems and developing analytical protocols. However, investigating solid-fluid equilibria in mm 3 -sized experimental capsules poses several challenges, particularly in sulfur-bearing chemical systems. These include maintaining bulk fluid composition and performing quantitative analysis with extremely low amounts of synthesized fluid. We present an innovative methodology for measuring ultra-low amounts of sulfur volatiles (H 2 S and SO 2 ) generated during experimental runs at high pressure and temperature conditions of 3 GPa and 700 °C. Using solid sulfides (FeS + FeS 2 ) and water as reactants, we performed redox-controlled syntheses employing a piston cylinder apparatus. We demonstrate that ex-situ measurements of these fluids by quadrupole mass spectrometry ensure accurate and precise analysis, confirming predicted thermodynamic compositions. Anodic TiO 2 nanotube arrays decorated with Ni, Cu, and NiCu alloy thin films were investigated for the first time for the photocatalytic degradation of paracetamol in water solution under UV irradiation. Metallic co-catalysts were deposited on TiO 2 nanotubes using magnetron sputtering. The influence of the metal layer composition and thickness on the photocatalytic activity was systematically studied. Photocatalytic experiments showed that only Cu-rich co-catalysts provide enhanced paracetamol degradation rates, whereas Ni-modified photocatalysts exhibit no improvement compared with unmodified TiO 2 . The best-performing material was obtained by sputtering a 20 nm thick film of 1:1 atomic ratio NiCu alloy: this material exhibits a reaction rate more than doubled compared with pristine TiO 2 , enabling the complete degradation of 10 mg L -1 of paracetamol in 8 h. The superior performance of NiCu-modified systems over pure Cu-based ones is ascribed to a Ni and Cu synergistic effect. Kinetic tests using selective holes and radical scavengers unveiled, unlike prior findings in the literature, that paracetamol undergoes direct oxidation at the photocatalyst surface via valence band holes. Finally, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) tests and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HR-MS) analysis were conducted to assess the degree of mineralization and identify intermediates. In contrast with the existing literature, we demonstrated that the mechanistic pathway involves direct oxidation by valence band holes.

We used in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to investigate the composition-performance correlation of Ni-SrTiO 3 photocatalysts active for water splitting. After preparation and exposure to ambient conditions, the Ni particles on SrTiO 3 consist of Ni(0) and Ni(II) phases, with a 4:1 at % ratio, in a metal/oxide core/shell configuration, as confirmed by XPS and TEM-EDX. In situ XAS experiments using an aqueous slurry of the Ni-SrTiO 3 photocatalyst and simultaneous continuous exposure to 365 nm light with a power density of 100 mW cm -2 and the X-rays do not reveal significant changes in oxidation state of the Ni particles. Contrarily, when the X-rays are discontinuously applied, UV excitation leads to oxidation of a significant fraction of Ni(0) to Ni(II), specifically to NiO and Ni(OH) 2 phases, along with cocatalyst restructuring. Ni dissolution or oxidation to higher valence states (e.g., Ni(III)) was not observed. The UV light-induced oxidation of Ni(0) causes the hydrogen evolution rate to drop to similar rates as observed for pristine SrTiO 3 , suggesting that Ni(0) is the active phase for H 2 generation. Our results underscore the importance of assessing the effects of (continuous) X-ray exposure to (photo)catalyst-containing aqueous slurries during in situ XAS experiments, which can significantly influence the observation of compositional and structural changes in the (photo)catalysts. A synthetic protocol for the preparation of a new class of morpholino homonucleosides in enantiopure form starting from readily available 1,2-aminoalcohols or glycidol has been developed. Key intermediates of the synthetic sequence are 2-bromomethyl morpholines, diastereoselectively achieved from the corresponding alkenols by palladaelectro-catalyzed alkoxybromination of unactivated alkenes. The so obtained bromo derivatives are in turn susceptible to functionalization with nucleic bases for easy access to morpholino homonucleosides.

A hybrid cellulose-based programmable nanoplatform for applications in precision radiation oncology is described. Here, sugar heads work as tumor targeting moieties and steer the precise delivery of radiosensitizers, i.e. gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. This "Trojan horse" approach promotes a specific and massive accumulation of radiosensitizers in TNBC cells, thus avoiding the fast turnover of small-sized AuNPs and the need for high doses of AuNPs for treatment. Application of X-rays resulted in a significant increase of the therapeutic effect while delivering the same dose, showing the possibility to use roughly half dose of X-rays to obtain the same radiotoxicity effect. These data suggest that this hybrid nanoplatform acts as a promising tool for applications in enhancing cancer radiotherapy effects with lower doses of X-rays.

Antimony (Sb) contamination poses significant environmental and health concerns due to its toxic nature and widespread presence, largely from anthropogenic activities. This study addresses the urgent need for an accurate speciation analysis of Sb, particularly in water sources, emphasizing its migration from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic materials. Current methodologies primarily focus on total Sb content, leaving a critical knowledge gap for its speciation. Here, we present a novel analytical approach utilizing frontal chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (FC-ICP-MS) for the rapid speciation analysis of Sb(III) and Sb(V) in water. Systematic optimization of the FC-ICP-MS method was achieved through multivariate data analysis, resulting in a remarkably short analysis time of 150 s with a limit of detection below 1 ng kg -1 . The optimized method was then applied to characterize PET leaching, revealing a marked effect of the plastic aging and manufacturing process not only on the total amount of Sb released but also on the nature of leached Sb species. This evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of the FC-ICP-MS approach in addressing such an environmental concern, benchmarking a new standard for Sb speciation analysis in consideration of its simplicity, cost effectiveness, greenness, and broad applicability in environmental and health monitoring.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococci, GBS) is responsible for severe infections in both neonates and adults. Currently, empiric antimicrobial therapy for sepsis and meningitis is the combined use of penicillin and gentamicin due to the enhanced bactericidal activity. However, high-level gentamicin resistance (HLGR) abrogates the synergism. The rate of HLGR was investigated within a dataset of 433 GBS strains collected from cases of invasive disease in both adults and neonates as well as from pregnant carriers. GBS isolates (n = 20, 4.6%) presented with HLGR (gentamicin MIC breakpoint >1024 mg/L) that was differently diffused between strains from adults or neonates (5.2% vs. 2.8%). Notably, 70% of HLGR GBS strains (14 isolates) were serotype IV. Serotype IV HLGR-GBS isolates were susceptible to all antibiotics tested, exhibited the alpha-C/HvgA/PI-2b virulence string, and belonged to sequence type 1010 (clonal complex (CC) 452). The mobile element that harbored the HLGR aac (6')- aph (2)″ gene is a novel integrative and conjugative element (ICE) about 45 kb long, derived from GBS 515 ICE tRNA Lys . The clonal expansion of this HLGR hypervirulent serotype IV GBS CC452 sublineage may pose a threat to the management of infections caused by this strain type.

Mercury is a pervasive and concerning pollutant due to its toxicity, mobility, and tendency to biomagnify in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Speciation analysis is crucial to assess exposure and risks associated with mercury, as different mercury species exhibit varying properties and toxicities. This study aimed at developing a selective detection method for organic mercury species in a non-invasive biomonitoring matrix like human hair. The method is based on frontal chromatography (FC) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), using a low pressure, homemade, anion exchange column inserted in a standard ICP-MS introduction system, without requiring high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenation. In addition to the extreme simplification and cost reduction of the chromatographic equipment, the proposed protocol involves a fast, streamlined and fully integrated sample preparation process (in contrast to existing methods): the optimized procedure features a 15-min ultrasonic assisted extraction procedure and 5 min analysis time. Consequently, up to 100 samples could be analyzed daily, making the method highly productive and suitable for large-scale screening programs in public and environmental health. Moreover, the optimized procedure enables a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.5 μg/kg for a 10 mg hair microsample. All these features undeniably demonstrate a significant advancement in routine biomonitoring practices. The goal of accurately quantifying trace elements in ultrapure silicon carbide (SiC) with a purity target of 5N (99.999% purity) was addressed. The unsuitability of microwave-assisted acid digestion followed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis was proved to depend mainly on the contamination induced by memory effects of PTFE microwave vessels and by the purity levels of acids, even if highly pure ones were used in a clean environment. A new analytical protocol for the direct analysis of the solid material by laser ablation coupled with ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) was then exploited. Different samples were studied; the best results were obtained by embedding SiC (powders or grains) in epoxy resin. This technique has the great advantage of avoiding any source of external contamination, as grinding, pressing and sintering pretreatments are totally unnecessary. Two different laser wavelengths (266 and 193 nm) were tested, and best results were obtained with the 266 nm laser. The optimized protocol allows the determination of elements down to the sub-mg/kg level with a good accuracy level.

To correctly manage a collection of historical silks, it is important to detect if the yarn has been originally subjected to degumming. This process is generally applied to eliminate sericin; the obtained fiber is named soft silk, in contrast with hard silk which is unprocessed. The distinction between hard and soft silk gives both historical information and useful indications for informed conservation. With this aim, 32 samples of silk textiles from traditional Japanese samurai armors (15th-20th century) were characterized in a non-invasive way. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy has been previously used to detect hard silk, but data interpretation is challenging. To overcome this difficulty, an innovative analytical protocol based on external reflection FTIR (ER-FTIR) spectroscopy was employed, coupled with spectral deconvolution and multivariate data analysis. The ER-FTIR technique is rapid, portable, and widely employed in the cultural heritage field, but rarely applied to the study of textiles. The ER-FTIR band assignment for silk was discussed for the first time. Then, the evaluation of the OH stretching signals allowed for a reliable distinction between hard and soft silk. Such an innovative point of view, which exploits a "weakness" of FTIR spectroscopy-the strong absorption from water molecules-to indirectly obtain the results, can have industrial applications too.

Protein-mimetic peptides (PMPs) are shorter sequences of self-assembling proteins, that represent remarkable building blocks for the generation of bioinspired functional supramolecular structures with multiple applications. The identification of novel aminoacidic sequences that permit the access to valuable biocompatible materials is an attractive area of research. In this work, in silico analysis of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa YeaZ protein ( Pa YeaZ) led to the identification of a tetradecapeptide that represents the shortest sequence responsible for the YeaZ-YeaZ dimer formation. Based on its sequence, an innovative 20-meric peptide, called PMP-2, was designed, synthesized, and characterized in terms of secondary structure and self-assembly properties. PMP-2 conserves a helical character and self-assembles into helical nanofibers in non-polar solvents (DMSO and trifluoroethanol), as well as in dilute (0.5 mM) aqueous solutions. In contrast, at higher concentrations (>2 mM) in water, a conformational transition from α-helix to β-sheet occurs, which is accompanied by the Protein-mimetic peptide aggregation into 2D-sheets and formation supramolecular gel in aqueous environment. The goals of this work are the evaluation of the performances of official methods in the challenging determination of Cr(VI) in Cr(III)-rich particulate matter, and the development of a novel and robust analytical protocol for this issue. A liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry apparatus (LC-ICP-MS), together with an isotope-enriched spike addition technique, was used to allow the study of Cr(III)/Cr(VI) interconversions during the extraction step. An original separation strategy based on Cr(OH) 3 head-column stacking was developed to tolerate high concentrations of Cr(III) (up to 10 mg/kg, with a Cr(VI) limit of detection of 0.51 µg/kg) without the need of any sample pretreatment. After observing, the official extraction protocols always yield false positive values in the challenging situation of particulate matter of leather industries (where huge amounts of Cr(III) are present), a new extraction strategy was developed. The novel procedure involves a 48-h extraction at room temperature using a pH-8 phosphate buffer, which demonstrated that no Cr(III)/Cr(VI) interconversions occur during this phase. To get rid of any possible interference caused by co-extracted substances, the measurement of the redox potential, together with the addition of a Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox buffer was performed to fix chromium speciation during the overall analytical protocol.

Ocean sediments consist mainly of calcium carbonate and organic matter (phytoplankton debris). Once subducted, some carbon is removed from the slab and returns to the atmosphere as CO 2 in arc magmas. Its isotopic signature is thought to reflect the bulk fraction of inorganic (carbonate) and organic (graphitic) carbon in the sedimentary source. Here we challenge this assumption by experimentally investigating model sediments composed of 13 C-CaCO 3  +  12 C-graphite interacting with water at pressure, temperature and redox conditions of an average slab-mantle interface beneath arcs. We show that oxidative dissolution of graphite is the main process controlling the production of CO 2 , and its isotopic composition reflects the CO 2 /CaCO 3 rather than the bulk graphite/CaCO 3 (i.e., organic/inorganic carbon) fraction. A fast and cost-effective procedure based on Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the selective determination of methylmercury (MeHg) is proposed and validated for fish tissue analysis. Selectivity for MeHg is achieved by simply inserting a strong anion exchange resin to block inorganic mercury as negatively charged chloride species, leaving MeHg unretained. The procedure features a 15 min extraction time followed by a 100 s analysis time achieving a limit of detection of 1.6 μg kg -1 on solid samples. The effect of the solution composition and inorganic mercury concentration were extensively studied to fully assess the selectivity of the procedure: Hg(II):MeHg ratios up to 50 are tolerated and cause systematic errors lower than 15%. The entire procedure was successfully validated by standard reference material from the marine food web, namely fish muscle and liver plus zooplankton. The complete dissolution of silicate-containing materials, often necessary for elemental determination, is generally performed by microwave-assisted digestion involving the forced use of hydrofluoric acid (HF). Although highly efficient in dissolving silicates, this acid exhibits many detrimental effects (e.g., formation of precipitates, corrosiveness to glassware) that make its removal after digestion essential. The displacement of HF is normally achieved by evaporation in open-vessel systems: atmospheric contamination or loss of analytes can occur when fuming-off HF owing to the non-ultraclean conditions necessarily adopted for safety reasons. This aspect strongly hinders determination at the ultra-trace level. To overcome this issue, we propose a clean and safe microwave-assisted procedure to induce the evaporative migration of HF inside a sealed "vessel-inside-vessel" system: up to 99.9% of HF can be removed by performing two additional microwave cycles after sample dissolution. HF migrates from the digestion solution to a scavenger (ultrapure H 2 O) via a simple physical mechanism, and then, it can be safely dismissed/recycled. The procedure was validated by a soil reference material (NIST 2710), and no external or cross-contamination was observed for the 27 trace elements studied. The results demonstrate the suitability of this protocol for ultra-trace analysis when the utilization of HF is mandatory.

Invasive infections by group B streptococci (iGBS) are the leading cause of sepsis and meningitis in the first three months of life worldwide. The clinical and microbiological characteristics of neonatal and infant iGBS in Italy during the years 2015-2019 were investigated. Voluntary-based surveillance reported 191 cases (67 early-onset (EOD) and 124 late-onset disease (LOD)) and 89 bacterial isolates were received. The main clinical manifestations were sepsis (59.2%) followed by meningitis (21.5%), bacteremia (12.0%) and septic shock (6.3%). Hospitalized preterm babies accounted for one third of iGBS and constituted the most fragile population in terms of mortality (8.2%) and brain damage (16.4%). GBS serotype III was predominant in EOD (56%) and caused almost all LOD (95%). The rate of resistance to clindamycin reached 28.8%. Most of clindamycin-resistant GBS strains (76%) were serotype III-ST17 and possessed the genetic markers of the emerging multidrug resistant (MDR) CC-17 sub-clone. Our data revealed that iGBS is changing since it is increasingly reported as a healthcare-associated infection (22.6%), mainly caused by MDR-CC17. Continuous monitoring of the clinical and microbiological characteristics of iGBS remains of primary importance and it represents, at present, the most effective tool to support prevention strategies and the research on the developing GBS vaccine.

In this study, the microstructure of mock-up mortar specimens for a historic environment, composed of different mixtures, was studied using mercury intrusion porosity (MIP) and microcomputed tomography (µCT), highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of both techniques. Porosity, sphericity, and pores size distribution were studied, evaluating changes according to mortar composition (aerial and hydraulic binders, quartz sand, and crushed limestone aggregate). The µCT results were rendered using 3D visualization software, which provides complementary information for the interpretation of the data obtained using 3D data-analysis software. Moreover, µCT contributes to the interpretation of MIP results of mortars. On the other hand, MIP showed significant ink-bottle effects in lime and cement mortars samples that should be taken into account when interpreting the results. Moreover, the MIP results highlighted how gypsum mortar samples display a porosity distribution that is best studied using this technique. This multi-analytical approach provides important insights into the interpretation of the porosimetric data obtained. This is crucial in the characterization of mortars and provides key information for the study of building materials and cultural heritage conservation.

Data from the Voyager probes have provided us with the first measurement of cosmic ray intensities at MeV energies, an energy range that had previously not been explored. Simple extrapolations of models that fit data at GeV energies, e.g., from AMS-02, however, fail to reproduce the Voyager data in that the predicted intensities are too high. Oftentimes, this discrepancy is addressed by adding a break to the source spectrum or the diffusion coefficient in an ad hoc fashion, with a convincing physical explanation yet to be provided. Here, we argue that the discrete nature of cosmic ray sources, which is usually ignored, is instead a more likely explanation. We model the distribution of intensities expected from a statistical model of discrete sources and show that its expectation value is not representative but has a spectral shape different from that for a typical configuration of sources. The Voyager proton and electron data are however compatible with the median of the intensity distribution.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor and cognitive dysfunctions that can usually be treated by physiotherapy or cognitive training, respectively. The effects of consecutive physiotherapy and cognitive rehabilitation programs on PD deficits are less investigated., Objective: We investigated the effects of 3 months of physiotherapy (physiotherapy treatment group) or consecutive physiotherapy and cognitive (physiotherapy and cognitive treatment group) rehabilitation programs on cognitive, motor, and psychological aspects in 20 PD patients., Methods: The two groups switched programs and continued rehabilitation for another 3 months. The outcomes were score improvement on cognitive (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Frontal Assessment Battery, Trail Making Test, Verbal Phonemic Fluency, Digit Span, and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning), motor (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-III, Berg Balance Scale, Two-Minute Walking Test, and Time Up and Go), and psychological (Beck Depression Inventory and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) scales., Results: Between-group comparison revealed a significant difference in functional mobility between the two rehabilitation programs. Improvements in walking abilities were noted after both interventions, but only the patients treated with consecutive training showed better performance on functional mobility and memory tasks., Conclusion: Our findings support the hypothesis that consecutive physiotherapy plus cognitive rehabilitation may have a greater benefit than physiotherapy alone in patients with PD.

An analytical method derived from the coupling of frontal chromatography (FC) with Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is proposed for the fast determination of Cr(VI) ultra-traces. The insertion of a short, homemade column filled with a strong cationic exchange resin in the flow-path of a commercial ICP-MS allows on-line trapping of cationic Cr(III) and elution of anionic Cr(VI). As a result, only the Cr(VI) front reaches the detector. This separation mechanism enables the highly selective quantification of Cr(VI) ultra-traces (LOD = 0.026 µg/kg - defined as 3 s of 10 replicated measurements of a 0.050 µg/kg solution) over a wide linearity range (tested up to 1024 µg/kg), even in the presence of Cr(III) concentration as high as 50 mg/kg. Key advantages of the proposed method are the extremely short analysis time (one minute), together with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the modifications applied over a commercial ICP-MS instrumental configuration. No time- or chemical-consuming pretreatments are needed: it is only necessary to acidify the sample prior Cr(VI) determination, as normally performed for common ICP-MS analysis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have become a key tool in the biotechnological landscape due to their well-documented ability to mediate intercellular communication. This feature has been explored and is under constant investigation by researchers, who have demonstrated the important role of EVs in several research fields ranging from oncology to immunology and diagnostics to regenerative medicine. Unfortunately, there are still some limitations to overcome before clinical application, including the inability to confine the EVs to strategically defined sites of interest to avoid side effects. In this study, for the first time, EV application is supported by 3D bioprinting technology to develop a new strategy for applying the angiogenic cargo of human umbilical vein endothelial cell-derived EVs in regenerative medicine. EVs, derived from human endothelial cells and grown under different stressed conditions, were collected and used as bioadditives for the formulation of advanced bioinks. After in vivo subcutaneous implantation, we demonstrated that the bioprinted 3D structures, loaded with EVs, supported the formation of a new functional vasculature in situ , consisting of blood-perfused microvessels recapitulating the printed pattern. The use of insoluble bismuth salts, typically BiPO 4 , is known to be a viable alternative to classical Bi 3+ ion electrochemical reduction for the preparation of bismuth film electrodes (BiFE) on screen-printed electrodes. The freshly prepared electrodes are indefinitely stable, and the active bismuth film is simply formed by in situ reduction. Two aspects are still to be investigated, namely the bismuth distribution on the working electrode and the possible residual presence of the counteranion, namely phosphate. High-vacuum techniques such as electron microscopy or spectroscopy, which are commonly employed for this purpose, cannot be safely used: the bismuth surface is well-known to reconstruct and recrystallize under the electron beam in vacuum. Here, we demonstrate the suitability and the effectiveness of laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS, a technique that vaporizes and analyzes the surface material under flowing helium at atmospheric pressure) for the characterization of BiFE. Fast and stable measurements of bismuth and phosphorous distribution are achieved with the advantage of a minimum alteration of the sample surface, avoiding possible interferences. This investigation evidenced how, upon reductive activation, the bismuth film is distributed with a radial symmetry and the phosphate counteranion is completely absent on the working electrode surface.

Pt nanoparticles are typically decorated as co-catalyst on semiconductors to enhance the photocatalytic performance. Due to the low abundance and high cost of Pt, reaching a high activity with minimized co-catalyst loadings is a key challenge in the field. We explore a dewetting-dealloying strategy to fabricate on TiO 2 nanotubes nanoporous Pt nanoparticles, aiming at improving the co-catalyst mass activity for H 2 generation. For this, we sputter first Pt-Ni bi-layers of controllable thickness (nm range) on highly ordered TiO 2 nanotube arrays, and then induce dewetting-alloying of the Pt-Ni bi-layers by a suitable annealing step in a reducing atmosphere: the thermal treatment causes the Pt and Ni films to agglomerate and at the same time mix with each other, forming on the TiO 2 nanotube surface metal islands of a mixed PtNi composition. In a subsequent step we perform chemical dealloying of Ni that is selectively etched out from the bimetallic dewetted islands, leaving behind nanoporous Pt decorations. Under optimized conditions, the nanoporous Pt-decorated TiO 2 structures show a>6 times higher photocatalytic H 2 generation activity compared to structures modified with a comparable loading of dewetted, non-porous Pt. We ascribe this beneficial effect to the nanoporous nature of the dealloyed Pt co-catalyst, which provides an increased surface-to-volume ratio and thus a more efficient electron transfer and a higher density of active sites at the co-catalyst surface for H 2 evolution., (© 2019 The Authors. A frontal chromatography-ICP-MS method (FC-ICP-MS) is proposed as an innovative approach for fast elemental speciation analysis: inorganic arsenic speciation was selected as the first case study to prove the feasibility of the technique and to explore its potentialities and limits. The principal benefits of the FC-ICP-MS approach are the short analysis time and the very simple instrumental setup. As(III) and As(V) front separation is performed over a strong anion exchanger at pH 7.5. After the optimization of the instrumental setup and the frontal chromatographic parameters, As(III) and As(V) concentrations up to 240 μg/kg can be determined within 120-140 s using different univariate and multivariate calibration approaches. Best results in terms of accuracy in prediction were obtained using the partial least squares (PLS) calibration achieving limits of detection of 0.18 and 0.21 μg/kg for As(III) and As(V), respectively. This approach was also used to establish the figures of merit of the method. The proved feasibility and good performances (in terms of analysis time and accuracy) of this technique lay the groundwork for future applications of FC-ICP-MS for the speciation of other elements.

Gold-decorated TiO2 nanotubes were used for the photocatalytic abatement of Hg(ii) in aqueous solutions. The presence of dewetted Au nanoparticles induces a strong enhancement of photocatalytic reduction and scavenging performances, with respect to naked TiO2. In the presence of chlorides, a massive formation of Hg2Cl2 nanowires, produced from Au nanoparticles, was observed using highly Au loaded photocatalysts to treat a 10 ppm Hg(ii) solution. EDS and XPS confirmed the nature of the photo-produced nanowires. In the absence of chlorides and/or at lower Hg(ii) starting concentrations, the scavenging of mercury proceeds through the formation of Hg-Au amalgams. Solar light driven Hg(ii) abatements up to 90% were observed after 24 h. ICP-MS analysis revealed that the removed Hg(ii) is accumulated on the photocatalyst surface. Regeneration of Hg-loaded exhaust photocatalysts was easily performed by anodic stripping of Hg(0) and Hg(i) to Hg(ii). After four catalytic-regeneration cycles, only a 10% decrease of activity was observed.

Subboiling distillation has been used since two decades for the purification of analytical grade acids from inorganic contaminants and demonstrated an efficient method to obtain pure acids starting from reagent grade chemicals. Nevertheless, the effect of the subboiling parameters on the purity of the distilled acids has never been methodically investigated. Aim of the present research is a systematic evaluation of the subboiling distillation protocol for the production of pure hydrochloric and nitric acid. In particular, the effect of the subboiling temperature and the number of subsequent distillations was investigated as these parameters were recognised as the most important factors controlling acid purity, acid concentration, and distillation yield. The concentration of twenty elements in the purified acids was determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. As a result, the subboiling temperature (up to 82°C) and the number of subsequent distillations (up to four) were demonstrated not to affect the purity of the distilled nitric and hydrochloric acids. Under normal laboratory conditions, the residual elemental concentrations were in most cases below 10 ng/L in both nitric (2.75% w/w) and hydrochloric (0.1 M) blanks. Ultrapure nitric and hydrochloric acids could accordingly be produced under the most favorable conditions, i.e., the highest temperature and one distillation process only.

In a recent study, we showed that tactile perception can be enhanced by applying a placebo manipulation consisting of verbal suggestion and conditioning (Fiorio et al., Neuroscience 217:96-104, 2012). Whether this change in perception is related to a better tactile functioning is still unknown. Aim of this study is to investigate whether placebo-induced enhancement of tactile perception results in better somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT), as a proxy of tactile acuity. To this purpose, a group of subjects (experimental group) was verbally influenced and conditioned about the effect of an inert cream in enhancing tactile perception, while a control group was informed about the real nature of the cream. In both groups, we measured STDT before and after cream application, by means of pairs of electrical stimuli delivered on the index fingertip and separated by ascending inter-stimulus intervals. STDT was defined as the shortest time interval at which the two stimuli were perceived as separated. Results revealed an increase in subjective perception of stimulus intensity and a reduction of STDT only in the experimental group. This study proves that a placebo procedure, consisting of verbal suggestion and a short conditioning, can reduce the temporal discrimination threshold.

Laser Ablation - Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a powerful method to determine the elemental composition of solid-state samples as it combines the high sensitivity and isotope selectivity of ICP-MS detection and the simplicity of laser ablation sampling. This technique enables rapid multiple sampling of the analysed material, such as needed for mapping or in-depth profiling applications. However, the duration of these measurements is practically restricted by the time taken for the particle to be transported from the sampling point to the ICP torch. The ablation cell, i.e. the sample holder, should combine high removal rate, high efficiency (i.e. complete transport of the ablated material) and reduced memory effects. These goals may be achieved by carefully designing the geometry of the cell and its gas flow patterns. A new cell design which enables a homogeneous wahout time of around 210 ms from a cylindrical chamber with 70 mm diameter is introduced in this paper. Washout time was determined as the time for the transient signal of 238U from a NIST610 glass standard to fall to 10% of its peak value. This result is achieved by combining a diffused, cylindrical flow pattern with an extraction tube coaxial with the laser beam and fixed to the laser assembly which enables the sampling point to be constantly positioned on the ablation spot. The lower part of the cell is mounted on the x,y stage for sample movement: the cell sealing is warranted by a viscous film junction between the lower and upper cell parts. Purpose: Evaluate effects of maternal immunization in a mouse model of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) vaginal colonization using clinical isolates., Materials and Methods: Female pregnant mice were immunized with heat-killed GBS 21 days before pregnancy and were inoculated intravaginally with GBS cultures (5 × 10 7 CFU twice a day for three days) from the 16th day of pregnancy. Gestation period and mice survival were monitored. Maternal anti-GBS IgG levels have been determined by ELISA analysis in vaccinated, unvaccinated mothers and newborns., Results: Maternal immunization before pregnancy provided protection to newborns for three of the four GBS strains used. Evaluation of the immunogenicity showed that this vaccination induced higher levels of IgG in vaccinated compared to unvaccinated dams and the presence of antibodies in the offspring at embryonic and postnatal age, and a Th1 response and high levels of IgG2a subclass antibody and IFN-γ were detected. A significant reduction of preterm births was observed in vaccinated mothers (p< 0.05)., Conclusions: Our finding suggest that vaccinated mothers could protect their progeny from GBS infection and preterm birth through passive immunization. The proposed mouse model may represent a noninvasive and effective tool to investigate pathogenetic mechanisms of GBS ascending infection and for vaccine protection studies.

Estimates of dissolved CO 2 in subduction-zone fluids are based on thermodynamic models, relying on a very sparse experimental data base. Here, we present experimental data at 1-3 GPa, 800 °C, and ∆FMQ ≈ -0.5 for the volatiles and solute contents of graphite-saturated fluids in the systems COH, SiO 2 -COH ( + quartz/coesite) and MgO-SiO 2 -COH ( + forsterite and enstatite). The CO 2 content of fluids interacting with silicates exceeds the amounts measured in the pure COH system by up to 30 mol%, as a consequence of a decrease in water activity probably associated with the formation of organic complexes containing Si-O-C and Si-O-Mg bonds. The interaction of deep aqueous fluids with silicates is a novel mechanism for controlling the composition of subduction COH fluids, promoting the deep CO 2 transfer from the slab-mantle interface to the overlying mantle wedge, in particular where fluids are stable over melts.Current estimates of dissolved CO 2 in subduction-zone fluids based on thermodynamic models rely on a very sparse experimental data base. Here, the authors show that experimental graphite-saturated COH fluids interacting with silicates at 1-3 GPa and 800 °C display unpredictably high CO 2 contents.

Background: The characteristics of group B streptococcus (GBS) neonatal disease in a period of 7 years are reported., Methods: The estimation of the neonatal GBS disease risk and prevention strategies adopted at delivery in absence of national guidelines was evaluated by the analysis of 3501 questionnaires. Notification of 194 neonatal GBS infections was recorded. In addition, 115 strains from neonatal early-onset disease (EOD) and late-onset disease, respectively, plus 320 strains from pregnant women were analyzed by molecular typing methods and for antibiotic resistance., Results: Preterm deliveries, precipitous labor and GBS negatively screened mothers were the prominent causes for an inadequate or lack of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis and EOD occurrence. The superimposable serotype distribution of GBS strains from EOD and from antenatal screening confirmed the vertical transmission from mother to neonate as the cause of disease. On the contrary, late-onset disease was almost exclusively caused by the internationally diffused clonal complex 17. Erythromycin resistance was detected in 17% of strains. Resistance to clindamycin was 15.3 %., Conclusions: The administration of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis to negatively GBS screened women in presence of risk factors was a deviation from the recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it should deserve further consideration. Routine surveillance and molecular typing of circulating clones are essential for the effective management of the neonatal GBS disease.

Microwaves are widely used to assist digestion, general sample treatment and synthesis. The use of aqua regia is extensively adopted for the closed vessel mineralization of samples prior to trace element detection, leading to the contamination of microwave vessels by chlorine containing species. The latter are entrapped in the polymeric matrix of the vessels, leading to memory effects that are difficult to remove, among which the risk of silver incomplete recoveries by removal of the sparingly soluble chloride is the predominant one. In the present paper, we determined by mass spectrometry that hydrogen chloride is the species entrapped in the polymeric matrix and responsible for vessel contamination. Moreover, several decontamination treatments were considered to assess their efficiency, demonstrating that several cleaning cycles with water, nitric acid or silver nitrate in nitric acid were inefficient in removing chloride contamination (contamination reduction around 90%). Better results (≈95% decrease) were achieved by a single decontamination step in alkaline environment (sodium hydroxide or ammonia). Finally, a thermal treatment in a common laboratory oven (i.e. without vacuum and ventilation) was tested: a one hour heating at 150°C leads to a 98.5% decontamination, a figure higher than the ones obtained by wet treatments which requires comparable time. Mercury substitution is a big issue in electroanalysis, and the search for a suitable, and less toxic, replacement is still under development. Of all the proposed alternatives, bismuth films appear to be the most viable solution, although they are still suffering some drawbacks, particularly the influence of deposition conditions and linearity at low concentrations. In this paper, the most promising strategies for bismuth film deposition on screen-printed electrodes (surface modifications, polymeric film deposition, insoluble salt precursors) will be evaluated for trace metal analysis. Objective: Pain prevalence data for patients at various stages after stroke., Design: Repeated cross-sectional, observational epidemiological study., Setting: Hospital-based multicenter study., Subjects: Four hundred forty-three prospectively enrolled stroke survivors., Methods: All patients underwent bedside clinical examination. The different types of post-stroke pain (central post-stroke pain, musculoskeletal pains, shoulder pain, spasticity-related pain, and headache) were diagnosed with widely accepted criteria during the acute, subacute, and chronic stroke stages. Differences among the three stages were analyzed with χ(2)-tests., Results: The mean overall prevalence of pain was 29.56% (14.06% in the acute, 42.73% in the subacute, and 31.90% in the chronic post-stroke stage). Time course differed significantly according to the various pain types (P < 0.001). The prevalence of musculoskeletal and shoulder pain was higher in the subacute and chronic than in the acute stages after stroke; the prevalence of spasticity-related pain peaked in the chronic stage. Conversely, headache manifested in the acute post-stroke stage. The prevalence of central post-stroke pain was higher in the subacute and chronic than in the acute post-stroke stage. The development of a scanning reactor for planar catalysts is presented here. With respect to other existing models, this reactor is able to scan catalysts even with low turnover frequencies with a minimum sensed circular area of approximately 6 mm in diameter. The downstream gas analysis is performed with a quaprupole mass spectrometer. The apparatus performances are presented for two different reactions: the hydrogenation of butadiene over palladium films and the oxidation of CO over a gold/titania catalyst. With the final setup, true scans in both X and Y directions (or even in a previously defined complex directional pattern) are possible within a scan speed ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 mm/min. Finally, this apparatus aims at becoming a valuable tool for high throughput and combinatorial experimentation to test patterned active surfaces and catalytic libraries.

Introduction: Workers involved in the production of Cd/As-based photovoltaic modules may be routinely or accidentally exposed to As- or Cd-containing inorganic compounds., Methods: Workers' exposure to As and Cd was investigated by environmental monitoring following a worst-case approach and biological monitoring from the preparation of the working facility to its decommissioning. Workplace surface contamination was also evaluated through wipe-test sampling., Results: The highest mean airborne concentrations were found during maintenance activities (As = 0.0068 µg m(-3); Cd = 7.66 µg m(-3)) and laboratory simulations (As = 0.0075 µg m(-3); Cd = 11.2 µg m(-3)). These types of operations were conducted for a limited time during a typical work shift and only in specifically suited containment areas, where the highest surface concentrations were also found (laboratory: As = 2.94 µg m(-2), Cd = 167 µg m(-2); powder containment booth: As = 4.35 µg m(-2), Cd = 1500 µg m(-2)). The As and Cd urinary levels (As&#95;u; Cd&#95;u) were not significantly different for exposed (As&#95;u = 6.11±1.74 µg l(-1); Cd&#95;u = 0.24±2.36 µg g(-1) creatinine) and unexposed workers (As&#95;u = 6.11±1.75 µg l(-1); Cd&#95;u = 0.22±2.08 µg g(-1) creatinine)., Conclusion: Despite airborne arsenic and cadmium exposure well below the threshold limit value (TLV) when the operation is appropriately maintained in line, workers who are involved in various operations (maintenance, laboratory test) could potentially be at risk of significant exposure, well in excess of the TLV. Nevertheless, the biological monitoring data did not show significant occupationally related arsenic and cadmium intake in workers and no significant changes or differences in arsenic and cadmium urinary level among the exposed and unexposed workers were found., (© The Author 2015. A new nanostructured α-Fe2O3 photoelectrode synthesized through plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) is presented. The α-Fe2O3 films consist of nanoplatelets with (001) crystallographic planes strongly oriented perpendicular to the conductive glass surface. This hematite morphology was never obtained before and is strictly linked to the method being used for its production. Structural, electronic, and photocurrent measurements are employed to disclose the nanoscale features of the photoanodes and their relationships with the generated photocurrent. α-Fe2O3 films have a hierarchical morphology consisting of nanobranches (width ∼10 nm, length ∼50 nm) that self-organize in plume-like nanoplatelets (350-700 nm in length). The amount of precursor used in the PE-CVD process mainly affects the nanoplatelets dimension, the platelets density, the roughness, and the photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity. The highest photocurrent (j = 1.39 mA/cm(2) at 1.55 VRHE) is shown by the photoanodes with the best balance between the platelets density and roughness. The so obtained hematite hierarchical morphology assures good photocurrent performance and appears to be an ideal platform for the construction of customized multilayer architecture for PEC water splitting.

We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 223 γ-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) in 2005-2010 during LIGO's fifth and sixth science runs and Virgo's first, second, and third science runs. The IPN satellites provide accurate times of the bursts and sky localizations that vary significantly from degree scale to hundreds of square degrees. We search for both a well-modeled binary coalescence signal, the favored progenitor model for short GRBs, and for generic, unmodeled gravitational wave bursts. Both searches use the event time and sky localization to improve the gravitational wave search sensitivity as compared to corresponding all-time, all-sky searches. We find no evidence of a gravitational wave signal associated with any of the IPN GRBs in the sample, nor do we find evidence for a population of weak gravitational wave signals associated with the GRBs. For all IPN-detected GRBs, for which a sufficient duration of quality gravitational wave data are available, we place lower bounds on the distance to the source in accordance with an optimistic assumption of gravitational wave emission energy of 10(-2)M⊙c(2) at 150 Hz, and find a median of 13 Mpc. For the 27 short-hard GRBs we place 90% confidence exclusion distances to two source models: a binary neutron star coalescence, with a median distance of 12 Mpc, or the coalescence of a neutron star and black hole, with a median distance of 22 Mpc. Finally, we combine this search with previously published results to provide a population statement for GRB searches in first-generation LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors and a resulting examination of prospects for the advanced gravitational wave detectors.

We propose here a novel voltammetric method for the determination of platinum at trace levels. The method is based on the interference that platinum generates on the anodic stripping signal of tin acidic solutions: in appropriate conditions platinum uses the intermediate formation of tin(II) ions, taking place during the tin cathodic reduction, to reduce itself and to form mixed Pt(II)-Sn(II) chloro-complexes. From the analysis of the anodic stripping plots obtained after subsequent additions of tin in a Pt-containing solution, it is possible to quantify accurately and precisely the Pt concentration from 3 ppb to more than 10 ppm. This novel method is validated for the analysis of Pt in heterogeneous catalysts, but in principle could be extended to other matrixes.

Idiopathic achalasia is a motor disorder of the esophagus of unknown etiology caused by loss of motor neurons determining an altered motility. It may determine severe symptoms such as progressive dysphagia, regurgitations, and pulmonary aspirations. Many therapeutic options may be offered to patients with achalasia, from surgery to endoscopic treatments such as pneumatic dilation, botulinum injection, peroral endoscopic myotomy, or endoscopic stenting. Recently, temporary placement of a stent was proposed by Cheng as therapy for achalasia disorders, whereas no Western authors have dealt with it up to date. The present study reports our preliminary experience in 7 patients with achalasia treated with a temporary stent. Partially covered self-expanding metallic stents (Micro-Tech, Nanjin, China) 80 mm long and 30 mm wide were placed under fluoroscopic control and removed after 6 days. Clinical follow-up was scheduled to check endoscopic success, symptoms release, and complications. The placement and the removal of the stents were obtained in all patients without complications. Mean clinical follow-up was 19 months. Five out of 7 patients referred total symptoms release and 2 experienced significant improvement of dysphagia. The procedure was not time consuming and was safe; no mild or severe complications were registered. In conclusion, our results may suggest a possible safe and effective endoscopic alternative treatment in patients with achalasia; however, further larger studies are necessary to confirm these promising, but very preliminary, data.

Recently we demonstrated that it is possible to influence tactile perception by applying a placebo manipulation consisting of verbal suggestion and conditioning and that this influence is associated to changes in the late components (N140 and P200) of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) (Fiorio et al., 2012). Due to the powerful effects of words in changing symptoms perception in the clinical domain, aim of this study was to investigate whether even in the tactile modality, perception can be changed by the mere use of persuasive words in a specific context. To this purpose, we adopted the same experimental setting of our previous study, apart from the conditioning procedure. A group of subjects (experimental group) has been verbally suggested about the effect of an inert cream in enhancing tactile perception, while a control group was informed about the inefficacy of the cream. In order to unveil the neurophysiological underpinnings of this effect, we compared the amplitude of late SEPs (P100, N140, P200), before and after treatment. Results showed that the experimental group did not perceive an increase of tactile sensation after the treatment and no modification occurred in the late SEPs. This study proves that verbal suggestion alone is not sufficient to induce enhanced tactile perception (at least with this experimental setting), suggesting that a conditioning procedure may be necessary in the tactile modality. Objective: To review current practice and update guidelines for the methodology of shortening composite measurement scales (CMSs)., Study Design and Setting: A literature review gathered data on 91 shortening processes from 1995 to 2009. The validity of the initial CMS, the shortening methods, and the validity of the derived short-form scales were examined. The results were compared with those from a previous literature review (articles from 1985 to 1995) to develop updated guidelines for CMS shortening., Results: The literature review revealed a persisting lack of use of rigorous methodology for CMS shortening. Of the 91 cases of CMS shortening, 36 combined a content approach and a statistical approach; 45 used only a statistical approach and 10 (11%) only a content approach. Introduction: The characteristics of Group B Streptococcal (GBS) early onset (EOD) and late onset (LOD) neonatal infections in Italy were analyzed. Two periods were considered, a first 3-years period (2007-2010), when notification of GBS infections was enforced under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Health, and a second 1 year period (2012) when reporting on neonatal GBS disease continued on voluntary basis., Methods: A standardized form was used to collect data on cases of neonatal GBS disease. They included both maternal and neonatal data., Results and Discussion: The two surveys underlined that preterm deliveries, precipitous labor and negatively GBS screened mothers are common causes of EOD occurrence, possibly explained by inadequate, or lack of, intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. Nevertheless, measures for reducing prevention failures and EOD incidence by an higher adherence to prevention strategies, as the Centre for Disease Control recommendations, are still possible and should be encouraged.

Background: Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is a rehabilitation approach for arm paresis consisting of an intensive schedule of treatment (6 h/d). The high demand of resources for CIMT is a critical issue for its implementation in the Italian health system., Objective: To compare the effects of a reduced-intensity modified CIMT (mCIMT) program that included splinting the unaffected arm for 12 hours daily with the effects of a conventional rehabilitation program for arm paresis in patients with stroke., Methods: Sixty-six participants with hemiparesis (3-24 months poststroke) who could extend the wrist and several fingers at least 10° were randomly assigned to mCIMT or conventional rehabilitation. Each group underwent 10 (2 h/d) treatment sessions (5 d/wk for 2 weeks). Patients were assessed with the Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT-FA and WMFT-T), the Motor Activity Log (MAL-AOU and MAL-QOM), and the Ashworth Scale before and after treatment and 3 months later., Results: Between-groups analysis showed that the mCIMT group overall had greater improvement than the control group in terms of the WMFT-FA (P = .010), MAL-AOU (P < .001), and MAL-QOM (P < .001). Differences between groups were significant both after treatment (P < .01) and at the 3-month follow-up (P < .01), although 40% of participants did not complete the 3-month assessment. Furthermore, the mCIMT group showed a greater decrease of Ashworth Scale score than the control group at 3 months (P = .021)., Conclusion: Two hours of CIMT may be more effective than conventional rehabilitation in improving motor function and use of the paretic arm in patients with chronic stroke.

Cervical dystonia (CD) is often associated with pain in the neck muscles, though the mechanisms underlying pain in this condition are still largely unknown. The aim of this study was to assess laser pain rating and CO(2) laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) in CD patients with pain in the posterior neck region. We assessed the N2/P2 LEP complex and laser pain rating in a group of 20 CD patients and in 21 normal subjects. In 11 of the 20 CD patients (group I), the N2/P2 complex was recorded after stimulation of the skin overlying the right and left deltoid muscles (painless and non-dystonic). In the remaining nine CD patients (group II), the N2/P2 complex was recorded after stimulation of the skin over the splenius capitis muscle (painful and dystonic) and after stimulation of the skin overlying the contralateral splenius muscle (painless and non-dystonic). In group I patients, the N2/P2 LEP amplitude and laser pain rating after stimulation of both shoulders did not differ significantly from those obtained in normal subjects. Similarly, in group II patients, the N2/P2 LEP amplitude and laser pain rating after stimulation of the painful and dystonic splenius capitis muscle did not differ significantly from those obtained from either the contralateral painless, non-dystonic splenius capitis or normal subjects. The results of this study demonstrate that cutaneous nociceptive pathway function in CD patients is normal, thereby indicating that muscle pain in CD is not associated with any central sensitization of nociceptive inputs in either painful (dystonic) or non-painful (non-dystonic) body areas.

Vanadium-containing saponite samples were synthesized in a one-pot synthetic procedure with the aim of preparing samples for potential application as fillers for polymeric composites. These vanadium-modified materials were prepared from an acid support by adopting a synthetic strategy that allowed us to introduce isolated structural V species (H/V-SAP). The physicochemical properties of these materials were investigated by XRD analysis and by DR-UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy of CO that was adsorbed at 100 K; these data were compared to those of a V-modified saponite material that did not contain any Brønsted acid sites (Na/V-SAP). The surface-acid properties of both samples (together with the fully acidic H-SAP material and the Na-SAP solid) were studied in the catalytic isomerization of α-pinene oxide. The V-containing solids were tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation reaction of propene to evaluate their potential use as flame-retardant fillers for polymer composites. The effect of tuning the presence of Lewis/Brønsted acid sites was carefully studied. The V-containing saponite sample that contained a marked presence of Brønsted acid sites showed the most interesting performance in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) reactions because they produced coke, even at 773 K. Sensory perception can be influenced by cognitive functions like attention and expectation. An emblematic case of this is the placebo effect, where a reduction in pain perception can be obtained by inducing expectation of benefit following a treatment. The current study assessed the behavioural and brain activity correlates of a placebo procedure inducing an enhancement of non-noxious somatic sensation. An experimental group was verbally suggested and surreptitiously conditioned about the effect of an inert cream in enhancing tactile perception, while a control group was informed about the actual inefficacy of the cream. Both groups received non-noxious electric shocks activating A-Beta fibres on the right index finger, before and after application of the cream in the same site. The behavioural and neurophysiological effects of this procedure were measured by a numerical rating scale of subjective perception and by recording cortical and subcortical somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs). Although the intensity of stimulation was physically identical in the two sessions, the experimental group reported stronger tactile sensation after cream treatment than before. In parallel, the experimental group showed enhanced somatosensory cortical responses (N140, P200) after treatment, whereas subcortical and early-cortical SEP components did not change. We suggest that these findings reflect top-down modulation on tactile perception probably due to an interplay between expectation and attention and might rely on interactions between prefrontal and parietal brain regions., (Copyright © 2012 IBRO.
