The study presented here elucidate the concentrations of radionuclides and potentially toxic elements in the soil samples around the Novaya Zemlya in the Russian Arctic zone, determined using HPGe gamma spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and direct mercury analyzer. The average detected concentrations for 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, 235 U and 137 Cs were 36.40, 46.06, 768, 2.06 and 4.71 Bq/kg, respectively. At many sampling sites, the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr) were higher than the natural levels. Positive Matrix Factorization analysis revealed the contribution of oil dumps (32%), natural sources (16%), bird colonies (32%) and atmospheric deposition (20%) for elevated elements content. In the case of radionuclides, the natural occurring contamination (38%) was primary source followed by dumped material (32%) and bird colonies (30%). The radiological risk from radionuclides was relatively high, yet still under permissible levels. For potentially toxic elements, Fe was predominant non-carcinogenic pollutant and Ni emerged as major carcinogenic contaminant. Keeping in view the high content of some elements, future studies are required to keep the human and ecological risk low, and to establish scientific grounds for the contribution of settled bird species. Oil wastewater often contains high levels of radium, a carcinogenic and radioactive element. This article closely engages with two investigations of radium in groundwater downstream from oil wastewater storage pits. While one investigation found that radium did not travel beyond the storage pits, the other found evidence of elevated radium some two kilometers downstream. With an agential realist analysis, we resolve these differences, showing that these two experimental apparatuses defined and mobilized two different phenomena of radium, and of radium-as-contaminant. What geologists call 'rock-water interactions' are materially meaningful intra -actions. Far from being a mere philosophical gloss on otherwise conventional science, the 'intra-' signifies that, in these processes, the sediment and the groundwater are bringing each other into being. Groundwater sampling entails a specific set of intra-actions with the subsurface that enact different agential cuts. In addition, a geochemical focus on objects, rather than relations, also constrains understandings of chemical harm and accountability. These concepts do not only affect experimental apparatuses; rather, they come into being through and with each other. Therefore, rigorous approaches to groundwater and remediation do not lie in the pull to reify individual groundwater constituents, or to arbitrate between 'contaminant' and 'contaminated'. Rather, rigorous approaches lie in the role of chemical relations in constituting specific groundwater phenomena. We elaborate three aspects of these relations: the constitution of radium-as-isolated-element through the ontological work of sampling schema, the formation of scale and attendant spacetimematterings within experimental apparatuses, and the work of contamination logics within conceptualizations of chemical harm. This analysis has major implications for understanding the potential harm of oil wastewater to groundwater.

Containing only low levels of U-bearing minerals, U ores often have to undergo hydrometallurgical processing for the separation of other minerals. Hydrometallurgical operations, even after being shut down, could pose radiological risk to the ecosystem and human health due to the radionuclide contamination of surrounding environmental media. This study investigated the contamination of radionuclides in the agricultural topsoils downstream of a decommissioned hydrometallurgical U plant in southern China, and assessed the corresponding radiological risk and evaluated its impact on soil microbial communities. The values of geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index indicate that all soil samples were significantly contaminated with U and 226 Ra, with their concentrations being 4.4-28.7 times and 4.4-114.8 times higher than the corresponding regional background values, respectively. The mean outdoor annual effective dose (OAED) in the sampling plot next to the drainage ditch downstream of the decommissioned plant was up to 3.9 and 8.2 times higher than the Chinese annual effective dose limit and global average, respectively, which is indicative of unacceptable radiological risk for the local farm workers. Soil microbial composition was obviously impacted by the soil physicochemical properties and radionuclides. Specifically, Cladophialophora, which belongs to the fungal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of total Cd, total U, organic U, residual U, and total K, while Methanosarcina, which belongs to the archaeal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of 226 Ra and residual U. Soil pH and total N content were significantly correlated with the abundance of several bacterial genera and the dominant archaeal genus (i.e., Candidatus Nitrocosmicus). The American radium dial worker (RDW) cohort of over 3,200 persons is being revisited as part of the Million Person Study (MPS) to include a modern approach to RDW dosimetry. An exceptional source of data and contextualization in this project is an extensive collection of electronic records (requiring 43 gigabytes (GB) of storage) digitized from existing microfilm and microfiche housed at the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR). Although the type, extent, and quality (e.g., legibility) of record(s) varies between individuals, the remarkable occupational, medical and demographic data include in vivo radiation measurements (e.g., radon breath, whole body counts), autopsy results, medical records (including copies of radiographs), interviews over the years, and correspondence. Of particular dosimetric interest are the details of radiation measurements. For example, there are some instances where hand-written and transcribed values are both available, along with notes providing context for why a particular measurement in a time series of measurements was chosen to assign an intake, or if there were concerns about a particular measurement. Born prior to 1935, RDW have nearly all passed away. Thus, the updated dosimetry, especially for the bone, will allow the correlation of lifetime cumulative dose with radiation risk. Here we review typical information available in this collection of historical records, highlighting some interesting finds, and discuss the relevance to current and ongoing work related to updating the dosimetry of the RDW in the Million Person Study, including providing an example of the usefulness of information contained in these records., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly occurring cancer in the United States, with higher incidence rates among Black populations. Groundwater concentrations of natural radionuclides uranium and radium have seldom been investigated in relation to CRC despite their known carcinogenicity. We investigate spatial patterns of CRC by race, and in relation to groundwater concentrations of uranium and radium, testing the hypothesis that uranium and radium in groundwater might differentially contribute to incident CRC in Black and White populations in counties of Georgia, USA. Black populations showed a higher incidence of CRC than White populations; the median incident rate difference was 9.23 cases per 100,000 (95% CI: 2.14, 19.40). Spatial cluster analysis showed high incidence clusters of CRC in similar regions for Black and White populations. Linear regression indicated there are, on average, 1-2 additional cases of colorectal cancer in counties with higher levels of radium in their groundwater, irrespective of race. Uranium was not associated with CRC. This ecologic study suggests that radium in groundwater may be linked with increased incidence of CRC, although it did not explain higher CRC incidence rates in Black populations. Further studies are needed to verify this association given the inherent limitations in the ecologic study design and the crude exposure assessment.

Elucidating the factors affecting the transfer of naturally occurring radionuclides (NOR) between environmental compartments is a key part of the assessment of ecosystem's exposure to naturally occurring radionuclide materials (NORM). For that, the sorption and desorption solid-liquid distribution coefficients (K d ) of radium (Ra) were quantified in a collection of 31 soil samples with contrasting edaphic properties under controlled conditions in laboratory batch experiments. Ra sorption was demonstrated to be moderate to high, with K d (Ra) values ranging from 10 2 to 10 3  L kg -1 . Ra sorbed was mostly irreversible, as evidenced by desorption percentages lower than 2 %. An exploratory analysis with partial least squares (PLS) regression identified the soil properties that correlated with K d (Ra) and discarded those that were not relevant for describing K d variability. A dataset of the sorption K d (Ra) values and associated soil properties was built from our own data and from the literature after performing an in-depth review of similar Ra sorption studies. For the first time, K d (Ra) parametric prediction models were constructed using univariate linear regression (ULR) and multivariate linear regression (MLR). Ra sorption in soils was mostly explained by the soil properties directly or indirectly related to the available exchange sites, such as the levels of water-soluble and exchangeable Ca and Mg as well as the pH of the contact solution. The most promising models explained around 80 % of the K d (Ra) data variance, only needing K d (Ca + Mg) or additional soil descriptors such as pH, Mn content, and the specific surface area. The validation of the proposed models confirmed that K d (Ra) can be predicted with only a few soil properties that can be characterised in routine analysis. Background: Actinium-225 is one of the most promising radionuclides for targeted alpha therapy. Its limited availability significantly restricts clinical trials and potential applications of 225 Ac-based radiopharmaceuticals., Methods: In this work, we examine the possibility of 225 Ac production from the thermal neutron flux of a nuclear reactor. For this purpose, a target consisting of 1.4 mg of 226 Ra(NO 3 ) 2 (T 1/2  = 1600 years) and 115.5 mg of 90 % enriched, stable 157 Gd 2 O 3 was irradiated for 48 h in the Breazeale Nuclear Reactor with an average neutron flux of 1.7·10 13  cm -2 ·s -1 . Gadolinium-157 has one of the highest thermal neutron capture cross sections of 0.25 Mb, and its neutron capture results in emission of high-energy, prompt γ-photons. Emitted γ-photons interact with 226 Ra to produce 225 Ra according to the 226 Ra(γ, n) 225 Ra reaction. Gadolinium debulking and separation of undesirable, co-produced 227 Ac from 225 Ra was achieved in one step by using 60 g of branched DGA resin. After 225 Ac ingrowth from 225 Ra (T 1/2  = 14.8 d), 225 Ac was extracted from the 226 Ra and 225 Ra fraction using 5 g of bDGA resin and then eluted using 5 mM HNO 3 ., Results: Measured activity of 225 Ac showed that 6(1) kBq or 0.16(3) μCi (1σ) of 225 Ra was produced at the end of bombardment from 0.9 mg of 226 Ra., Conclusion: The developed 225 Ac separation is a waste-free process which can be used to obtain pure 225 Ac in a nuclear reactor., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence this work., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. This study explored the alteration of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs: 226 Ra (≈ 238 U), 232 Th, 40 K) in an anthropogenically disrupted urban river-basin (Turag, Bangladesh) in terms of constitutional substances (Sc, Ti, V, Fe, La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Th, U) of heavy-minerals. Average activity concentrations of 226 Ra (≈ 238 U), 232 Th, and 40 K were 41.5 ± 12.9, 72.1 ± 27.1, and 639 ± 100 Bqkg -1 , respectively which were relatively higher compared to crustal origin. ∑REEs, Ta, W, Th, and U were ~2 times higher compared to crustal values with Ce and Eu-anomalies. APCS-MLR and PMF receptor models were used to determine the various anthropogenic and/or geogenic sources of NORMs and elements. Layer-wise variations of NORMs and elements were observed to trace the response of sedimentary processes towards the incoming pollution load. Presence of REEs indicates moderate degree of ecological risk to aquatic biota. Produced water (i.e., a mixture of returned injection fluids and geologic formation brines) represents the largest volumetric waste stream associated with petroleum production in the United States. As such, produced water has been the focus of intense study with emphasis on understanding the geologic origin of the fluids, environmental impacts of unintended or intentional release, disposal concerns, and their commodity (e.g., lithium) potential. However, produced water geochemistry from many active petroleum plays remain poorly understood leading to knowledge gaps associated with the origin of brine salinity and parameters (e.g., radium levels) that can impact treatment, disposal, and possible reuse. Here we evaluate the major ion geochemistry, radium concentrations, and stable water isotope composition of ~120 produced water samples collected from 17 producing unconventional petroleum wells in Weld County, Colorado from the Late Cretaceous Niobrara Formation. This sample set encompasses eight produced water time series from four new wells across production days 0 to ~365 and from four established wells across production days ~1000 to ~1700. Additionally, produced water from nine other established Niobrara Formation wells were sampled at discrete time points ranging from day 458 to day 2256, as well as hydraulic fracturing input fluids. These results expand the available Niobrara Formation produced water geochemical data, previously limited to a few wells sampled within the first year of production, allowing for the heterogeneity of major ions and radium to be evaluated. Specific highlights include: (i) observations that boron and bromide concentrations are higher in produced waters from new wells compared to older, established wells, suggesting the role of input fluids contributing to fluid geochemistry; and (ii) barium and radium concentrations vary between the producing benches of the Niobrara Formation with implications for treating radiological hazards in produced waters from this formation. Furthermore, we explore the geochemical relationships between major ion ratios and stable water isotope composition to understand the origin of salinity in Niobrara Formation brines from the Denver-Julesburg Basin. Surface water and sediments from the Jackpile mine, St. Anthony mine, Rio Paguate, Rio Moquino, and Mesita Dam areas near Pueblo of Laguna, New Mexico, were analyzed for 226 Ra and U using gamma (γ) spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, respectively. Activity ratios for 226 Ra/ 238 U for solid samples range from 0.34 ± 0.13 to 16 ± 2.9, which reflect uranium transport and accumulation (<1), relatively pristine material in secular equilibrium (1), and removal of uranium by weathering (>1). Concentrations ranging from 80 to 225 μg L -1 U were detected in unfiltered water samples near the Jackpile mine. Water samples upstream and downstream from the mine contained concentrations ranging from 12 to 15 μg L -1 U. Water samples collected from the North Pit standing pond in the Jackpile mine contained as much as 1560 pCi L -1 of 226 Ra, and passing the water through a 0.2 μM filter did not substantially reduce the activity of 226 Ra in the water. 234 Th and 226 Ra are in secular equilibrium in this water, while radon gas was lost from the water. The results of the current study provide insight into the distribution of U-series radionuclides in the Pueblo of Laguna area, including detection of high levels of radioactivity in water at some locations within the Jackpile mine.

The clinical success of [ 223 Ra]RaCl 2 (Xofigo®) for the palliative treatment of bone metastases in patients with prostate cancer has highlighted the therapeutic potential of α-particle emission. Expanding the applicability of radium-223 in Targeted Alpha Therapy of non-osseous tumors is followed up with significant interest, as it holds the potential to unveil novel treatment options in the comprehensive management of cancer. Moreover, the use of barium radionuclides, like barium-131 and -135m, is still unfamiliar in nuclear medicine applications, although they can be considered as radium-223 surrogates for imaging purposes. Enabling these applications requires the establishment of chelators able to form stable complexes with radium and barium radionuclides. Until now, only a limited number of ligands have been suggested and these molecules have been primarily inspired by existing structures known for their ability to complex large metal cations. However, a systematic inspection of chelators specifically tailored to Ra 2+ and Ba 2+ has yet to be conducted. This work delves into a comprehensive investigation of a series of small organic ligands, aiming to unveil the coordination preferences of both radium-223 and barium-131/135m. Electronic binding energies of both metal cations to each ligand were theoretically computed via Density Functional Theory calculations (COSMO-ZORA-PBE-D3/TZ2P), while thermodynamic stability constants were experimentally determined for Ba 2+ -ligand complexes by potentiometry, NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The outcomes revealed malonate, 2-hydroxypyridine 1-oxide and picolinate as the most favorable building blocks to design multidentate chelators. At CERN-ISOLDE, high-purity radioactive ion beams of 219 Fr and 221 RaF were investigated with α-decay spectroscopy at the CRIS and ASET experiments in the course of three different experimental campaigns. Legacy disposal of oil and gas produced water (OGPW) to surface water has led to radium contamination in streambed sediment creating a long-term radium source. Increased radium activities pose a potential health hazard to benthic organisms, such as freshwater mussels, as radium is capable of bioaccumulation. This project quantifies the impact of OGPW disposal on adult freshwater mussels, Eurynia dilatata, which were examined along the Allegheny River adjacent to a centralized waste treatment facility (CWT) that historically treated and then discharged OGPW. Radium isotopes ( 226 Ra and 228 Ra) were measured in streambed sediment, mussel soft tissue, and mussel hard shell collected upstream, at the outfall, 0.5 km downstream, and 5 km downstream of the CWT. Total radium activity was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in mussel tissue (mean = 3.44 ± 0.95 pCi/g), sediment (mean = 1.45 ± 0.19 pCi/g), and hard shell (mean = 0.34 ± 0.11 pCi/g) samples 0.5 km downstream than background samples collected upstream (mean = 1.27 ± 0.24; 0.91 ± 0.09; 0.10 ± 0.02 pCi/g respectively). Mussel shells displayed increased 226 Ra activities up to 5 km downstream of the original discharge. Downstream soft tissue and hard shell 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios, as well as hard shell metal/calcium (e.g., Na/Ca; K/Ca; Mg/Ca) and 228 Ra/ 226 Ra ratios demonstrated trends towards values characteristic of Marcellus OGPW. Adsorption reactions of various cations on clay minerals have different effects on their environmental behaviors depending on the molecular-scale adsorption structure. Some cations form outer-sphere complexes via hydration, while others create inner-sphere complexes through dehydration. This preference dictates their environmental impact. However, the factors controlling these complex formations remain unclear. Furthermore, research on the adsorption preferences of radium (Ra) is lacking. Thus, this study conducted the first EXAFS study of Ra 2+ adsorbed on clay minerals and showed that Ra 2+ forms inner-sphere complexes on vermiculite, which can be surprising because Ra 2+ is a divalent cation and prefers to be hydrated. In order to investigate the factors controlling the complex formations, this study conducted systematic EXAFS measurements and DFT calculations for alkali and alkaline earth metal cations. The results showed the importance of the size-matching effect between the adsorbed cation and the cavity of the tetrahedral sheets and that the complex formation can be estimated by the combination of the ionic radius and hydration enthalpy of the adsorbed cation. Furthermore, this study also analyzed environmental core samples. Solid process fine waste or tailings of a uranium mill is a potential source of release of radiologically significant gaseous radon ( 222 Rn). A number of variables such as radium ( 226 Ra) content, porosity, moisture content, and tailings density can affect the extent of emanation from the tailings. Further, if a cover material is used for remediation purposes, additional challenges due to changes in the matrix characteristics in predicting the radon flux can be anticipated. The uranium mill tailings impoundment systems at Jaduguda have been in use for the long-term storage of fine process waste (tailings). A pilot-scale remediation exercise of one of the tailings ponds has been undertaken with 30 cm soil as a cover material. For the prediction of the radon flux, a numerical model has been developed to account for the radon exhalation process at the remediated site. The model can effectively be used to accommodate both the continuous and discrete variable inputs. Depth profiling and physicochemical characterization for the remediated site have been done for the required input variables of the proposed numerical model. Produced water from conventional oil and gas wells (O&G PW) is beneficially reused as an inexpensive alternative to commercial dust suppressants which minimize inhalable particulate matter (PM 10 ) from unpaved roads. The efficacy and environmental impacts of using O&G PW instead of commercial products have not been extensively investigated, although O&G PW has been used for dust suppression for decades and often has elevated concentrations of environmental pollutants. In this study, the effectiveness of O&G PW is compared to commercial products under variable humidity conditions by measuring total generated PM 10 emissions from treated road aggregate discs. To measure environmental impacts, model roadbeds were treated with six O&G PW and commercial products then subjected to a simulated two-year, 24-h storm event. Generated runoff water was collected and characterized. In efficacy studies, O&G PW offered variable dust reduction (10-85 %) compared to rainwater controls under high humidity (50 %) conditions but performed similarly or worse than controls when humidity was low (20 %). Conversely, all but two commercial products reduced dust emissions by over 90 % regardless of humidity. In rainfall-runoff experiments, roads treated with O&G PWs and CaCl 2 Brine generated runoff that was hypersaline, indicating that mobilization of soluble salts could contribute to freshwater salinization. Though most runoff concentrations were highest from roadbeds treated with CaCl 2 Brine, runoff from roadbeds treated with O&G PW had the highest concentrations of combined radium (83.6 pCi/L), sodium (3560 mg/L), and suspended solids (5330 mg/L). High sodium concentrations likely dispersed clay particles, which increased road mass loss by 47.2 kg solids/km/storm event compared to rainwater controls. Roadbeds treated with CaCl 2 Brine, which had low sodium concentrations, reduced solid road mass loss by 98.1 kg solids/km/storm event. Introduction: Older adults with metastatic prostate cancer (mPC) experience high symptom burden associated with treatment. Frailty may exacerbate treatment toxicity. The aim of this study was to explore short-term treatment toxicity in patients with metastatic prostate cancer., Materials and Methods: Older adults with metastatic prostate cancer starting chemotherapy, androgen-receptor-axis targeted therapies, or radium-223 participated in a prospective, multicentre, observational study. Participants self-reported symptoms daily using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System for one treatment cycle via internet or telephone. The most common moderate-to-severe symptoms (score≥4), their duration, and the proportion of participants who experienced improvements in symptom severity (score<4) after reporting moderate-to-severe symptoms at baseline were determined using descriptive statistics. Once-weekly symptom questionnaires were administered and analyzed using linear mixed effect models. Symptom incidence, duration, and frailty associations were assessed using t-tests and chi-square tests., Results: Ninety participants completed the study (mean age=77 years [standard deviation=6.1], 42% frail [Vulnerable Elders Survey≥3]). The most common moderate-to-severe symptoms across cohorts were fatigue (46.8%), insomnia (42.9%), poor wellbeing (41.2%), pain (37.5%), and decreased appetite (37.1%). Poor wellbeing had a higher incidence in frail participants (62.5% in frail vs. 31.4% in non-frail, p=0.039). Symptom duration varied across cohorts and between frail and non-frail participants. Among participants who reported moderate-to-severe symptoms at baseline, no more than 15% improved in any symptom. There were statistically significant improvements in weekly symptoms for fatigue, decreased appetite, and insomnia in the chemotherapy cohort only., Discussion: Limitations include a short follow-up duration, lack of a control group, and few radium-223 participants. Background & Purpose: Radium-223 (Ra223) improves survival in metastatic prostate cancer (mPC), but its impact on systemic immunity is unclear, and biomarkers of response are lacking. We examined markers of immunomodulatory activity during standard clinical Ra223 and studied the impact of Ra223 on response to immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) in preclinical models., Materials & Methods: We conducted a single-arm biomarker study of Ra223 in 22 bone mPC patients. We measured circulating immune cell subsets and a panel of cytokines before and during Ra223 therapy and correlated them with overall survival (OS). Using two murine mPC models-orthotopic PtenSmad4-null and TRAMP-C1 grafts in syngeneic immunocompetent mice-we tested the efficacy of combining Ra223 with ICI., Results: Above-median level of IL-6 at baseline was associated with a median OS of 358 versus 947 days for below levels; p = 0.044, from the log-rank test. Baseline PlGF and PSA inversely correlated with OS (p = 0.018 and p = 0.037, respectively, from the Cox model). Ra223 treatment was associated with a mild decrease in some peripheral immune cell populations and a shift in the proportion of MDSCs from granulocytic to myeloid. In mice, Ra223 increased the proliferation of CD8 + and CD4 + helper T cells without leading to CD8 + T cell exhaustion in the mPC lesions. In one of the models, combining Ra223 and anti-PD-1 antibody significantly prolonged survival, which correlated with increased CD8 +  T cell infiltration in tumor tissue., Conclusion: The inflammatory cytokine IL-6 and the angiogenic biomarker PlGF at baseline were promising outcome biomarkers after standard Ra223 treatment. NASA has encouraged studies on 226 Ra deposition in the human brain to investigate the effects of exposure to alpha particles with high linear energy transfer, which could mimic some of the exposure astronauts face during space travel. However, this approach was criticized, noting that radium is a bone-seeker and accumulates in the skull, which means that the radiation dose from alpha particles emitted by 226 Ra would be heavily concentrated in areas close to cranial bones rather than uniformly distributed throughout the brain. In the high background radiation areas of Ramsar, Iran, extremely high levels of 226 Ra in soil contribute to a large proportion of the inhabitants' radiation exposure. A prospective study on Ramsar residents with a calcium-rich diet was conducted to improve the dose uniformity due to 226 Ra throughout the cerebral and cerebellar parenchyma. The study found that exposure of the human brain to alpha particles did not significantly affect working memory but was significantly associated with increased reaction times. This finding is crucial because astronauts on deep space missions may face similar cognitive impairments due to exposure to high charge and energy particles. Purpose: Radium-223 improves overall survival (OS) and reduces skeletal events in patients with bone metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), but relevant biomarkers are lacking. We evaluated automated bone scan index (aBSI) and circulating tumor cell (CTC) analyses as potential biomarkers of prognosis and activity., Patients and Methods: Patients with bone metastatic CRPC were enrolled on a prospective single-arm study of standard radium-223. 99m Tc-MDP bone scan images at baseline, 2 months, and 6 months were quantitated using aBSI. CTCs at baseline, 1 month, and 2 months were enumerated and assessed for RNA expression of prostate cancer-specific genes using microfluidic enrichment followed by droplet digital polymerase chain reaction., Results: The median OS was 21.3 months in 22 patients. Lower baseline aBSI and minimal change in aBSI (<+0.7) from baseline to 2 months were each associated with better OS ( P = .00341 and P = .0139, respectively). The higher baseline CTC count of ≥5 CTC/7.5 mL was associated with worse OS (median, 10.1 v 32.9 months; P = .00568). CTCs declined at 2 months in four of 15 patients with detectable baseline CTCs. Among individual genes in CTCs, baseline expression of the splice variant AR-V7 was significantly associated with worse OS (hazard ratio, 5.20 [95% CI, 1.657 to 16.31]; P = .00195). Baseline detectable AR-V7 , higher aBSI, and CTC count ≥5 CTC/7.5 mL continued to have a significant independent negative impact on OS after controlling for prostate-specific antigen or alkaline phosphatase., Conclusion: Quantitative bone scan assessment with aBSI and CTC analyses are prognostic markers in patients treated with radium-223. AR-V7 expression in CTCs is a particularly promising prognostic biomarker and warrants validation in larger cohorts.

Background: Actinium-225 ( 225 Ac) prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) radioligand therapy (RLT) is a novel therapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). We aimed to report the safety and antitumour activity of 225 Ac-PSMA RLT of mCRPC in a large cohort of patients treated at multiple centres across the world., Methods: This retrospective study included patients treated at seven centres in Australia, India, Germany, and South Africa. We pooled data of consecutive patients of any age and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status with histopathologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of the prostate who were treated with one or more cycles of 8 MBq 225 Ac-PSMA RLT administered intravenously for mCRPC. Previous lines of mCRPC treatment included taxane-based chemotherapy, androgen-receptor-axis inhibitors, lutetium-177 ( 177 Lu) PSMA RLT, and radium-223 dichloride. The primary outcomes were overall survival and progression-free survival., Findings: Between Jan 1, 2016, and May 31, 2023, 488 men with mCRPC received 1174 cycles of 225 Ac-PSMA RLT (median two cycles, IQR 2-4). The mean age of the patients was 68·1 years (SD 8·8), and the median baseline prostate-specific antigen was 169·5 ng/mL (IQR 34·6-519·8). Previous lines of treatment were docetaxel in 324 (66%) patients, cabazitaxel in 103 (21%) patients, abiraterone in 191 (39%) patients, enzalutamide in 188 (39%) patients, 177 Lu-PSMA RLT in 154 (32%) patients, and radium-223 dichloride in 18 (4%) patients. The median follow-up duration was 9·0 months (IQR 5·0-17·5). The median overall survival was 15·5 months (95% CI 13·4-18·3) and median progression-free survival was 7·9 months (6·8-8·9). In 347 (71%) of 488 patients, information regarding treatment-induced xerostomia was available, and 236 (68%) of the 347 patients reported xerostomia after the first cycle of 225 Ac-PSMA RLT. All patients who received more than seven cycles of 225 Ac-PSMA RLT reported xerostomia. Grade 3 or higher anaemia occurred in 64 (13%) of 488 patients, leukopenia in 19 (4%), thrombocytopenia in 32 (7%), and renal toxicity in 22 (5%). No serious adverse events or treatment-related deaths were recorded., Interpretation: 225 Ac-PSMA RLT shows a substantial antitumour effect in mCRPC and represents a viable therapy option in patients treated with previous lines of approved agents. Objectives: To investigate whether baseline 18F-sodium fluoride (NaF) and 18F-choline PET activity is associated with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) global and individual bone metastases' DWI MR imaging response to radium-223 treatment., Methods: Thirty-six bone-only mCRPC patients were prospectively recruited from three centers. Whole-body (WB)-MRI with DWI and 18F-NaF and 18F-choline PET/CT were performed at therapy baseline and 8-week intervals. In each patient, bone disease median global (g)ADC change between baseline and follow-up was calculated. Additionally, up to five bone target lesions per patient were delineated and individual median ADC change recorded. An ADC increase > 30% defined response per-patient and per-lesion. For the same targets, baseline 18F-NaF and 18F-choline PET SUVmax were recorded. Mean SUVmax across patient targets was correlated with gADC change and lesion SUVmax with per-lesion ADC change., Results: A total of 133 lesions in 36 patients (14 responders) were analyzed. 18F-NaF PET per-patient mean SUVmax was significantly higher in responders (median = 56.0 versus 38.7 in non-responders; p = 0.008), with positive correlation between SUVmax and gADC increase (rho = 0.42; p = 0.015). A 48.7 SUVmax threshold identified responders with 77% sensitivity and 75% specificity. Baseline 18F-NaF PET per-lesion SUVmax was higher in responding metastases (median = 51.6 versus 31.8 in non-responding metastases; p = 0.001), with positive correlation between baseline lesion SUVmax and ADC increase (rho = 0.39; p < 0.001). A 36.8 SUVmax threshold yielded 72% sensitivity and 63% specificity. Over the past century, human activities have contributed to the release of 226 Ra (t ½  = 1,600 y) in the environment, increasing the potential risks for human exposure and thus prompting scientists to monitor it. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is an alternative to alpha-spectrometry for the quantification of 226 Ra. However, the performances of radioanalytical procedures are rarely compared in a rigorous framework, which means that researchers may choose one on subjective factors or guesses. This article compares five published methods for the separation and preconcentration of 226 Ra in drinking waters based on chromatographic and extraction resins prior to its analysis by ICP-MS. We evaluated the turnaround time, generated wastes, and final cost of each protocol as the economic aspect can be an important criterion when selecting a method, particularly for sustainable environmental monitoring. Our results showed that 226 Ra was successfully separated and preconcentrated, yielding recoveries ranging between 84% and 105%. Method detection and quantification limits of respectively 2-7 fg L -1 (0.1-0.3 mBq L -1 ) and 6-24 fg L -1 (0.2-0.9 mBq L -1 ) were achieved when the separation method was coupled with ICP-MS. The turnaround times ranged between 6 and 21 hours, whereas the cost of the methods varied between 40 and 132 USD. This study highlights for the first time that methodologies recently published on the evaluation of 226 Ra levels in drinking water by ICP-MS have comparable figures of merit. The worldwide trend toward the construction of high-rise buildings with high energy efficiency highlights the role of building materials as a source of indoor radon in the modern urban environment. The aim of the study is to analyze the relationship between the Ra-226 activity concentration in building materials and indoor radon concentration using the example of multi-story buildings in Ekaterinburg. Measurements of the activity concentration of natural radionuclides in building materials were carried out using a new non-destructive method. A radon survey conducted early provided the data on indoor radon concentrations in the same apartments. The obtained Ra-226 activity concentrations in building materials in high-rise buildings were found to be relatively low, ranging from 9.1 to 51 Bq/kg. The typical radon entry rate by diffusion from building materials for modern Russian multi-story buildings can be accepted as equal to 0.5 Bq/(m 3 ∙h) per 1 Bq/kg of Ra-226 activity concentration. Ra-226 in building materials has been shown to be a primary source of indoor radon in modern high-rise buildings, where this factor can cause indoor radon concentrations above the reference level of 100 Bq/m 3 at low air exchange rates. Purpose: To conduct an appropriate use criteria expert panel update on clinical topics relevant to current clinical practice regarding postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT)., Methods and Materials: An analysis of the medical literature from peer-reviewed journals was conducted from May 4, 2010 to May 4, 2022 using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines to search the PubMed database to retrieve a comprehensive set of relevant articles. A well-established methodology (modified Delphi) was used by the expert panel to rate the appropriate use of procedures., Results: Evidence for key questions in PMRT regarding benefit in special populations and technical considerations for delivery was examined and described. Risk factors for local-regional recurrence in patients with intermediate-risk disease that indicate benefit of PMRT include molecular subtype, age, clinical stage, and pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Use of hypofractionated radiation in PMRT has been examined in several recent randomized trials and is under investigation for patients with breast reconstruction. The use of bolus varies significantly by practice region and has limited evidence for routine use. Adverse effects occurred with both PMRT preimplant and postimplant exchange in 2-staged breast reconstruction., Conclusions: Most patients with even limited nodal involvement will likely benefit from PMRT with significant reduction in local-regional recurrence and potential survival. Patients with initial clinical stage III disease and/or any residual disease after neoadjuvant chemotherapy should be strongly considered for PMRT. Growing evidence supports the use of hypofractionated radiation for PMRT with equivalent efficacy and decreased acute side effects, but additional evidence is needed for special populations. There is limited evidence to support routine use of bolus in all patients. Timing of PMRT regarding completion of 2-staged breast reconstruction requires a discussion of increased risks with radiation postimplant exchange compared with increased risk of failure of reconstruction or surgical complications with radiation preimplant exchange., (Copyright © 2023. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) can be highly enriched in nutrients, especially in bays with strong human activity, but has often been overlooked in coastal nutrient budgets. This study investigated the impact of both fresh and saline SGD on nutrient budgets in Sanmen Bay, China, a region heavily influenced by human activities. Based on the 224 Ra mass balance model, the total SGD flux was estimated to be (1.1 ± 0.1) × 10 8  m 3 d -1 (13.9 ± 0.5 cm d -1 ). Additionally, a water-salt mass balance model revealed that fresh SGD flux accounted for ~9.0 % of the total SGD flux. The results highlight the significance of fresh SGD as a freshwater source, contributing to 35.9 % of the total dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) flux via SGD. Considering all nutrient sources and sinks in the Sanmen Bay, SGD was identified as the primary source of nutrients in Sanmen Bay, contributing 53.9 % and 11.9 % of the total dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and DIP input, respectively. Furthermore, the discharge of industrial/domestic sewage and mariculture wastewater also posed a potential threat to nutrient levels in the bay. The article summarizes the activity concentrations data of 226 Ra and the sum of uranium isotopes (∑U) in samples of drinking underground water for different regions of Ukraine studied during 1998-2023 in the radiation monitoring laboratory of the State Institution "O.M. Marzieiev Institute of Public Health National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Arithmetic mean and standard deviations, minimum and maximum values for 226 Ra and ∑U activity concentrations are presented for the entire 1240 sample set and for each region separately. Collected data show that the established state permissible level for drinking water of 1.0 Bq/l is exceeded for 226 Ra in 1.1% of the studied samples, and for ∑U-in 3.9% correspondingly. The detected high levels of 226 Ra and ∑U activity concentrations correspond to certain regions belonging to the Ukrainian crystalline shield territory. A comparison of the current data with the data of previous studies held during of 1989-1991 indicates a significant difference: for the previous studies the average and standard deviations are much higher. We attribute this to the fact that the centralized sampling of previous studies was random, and it was related exclusively to communal water supply systems. At the same time, the current sample set covers a much larger number of regions, different water consumers; the data set includes the results of repeated studies for a large number of sources, in particular, sources with purified water. Hypothetical exposure doses caused by consumption of 226 Ra and ∑U in water for the current sample set were estimated for different age groups for each sample studied, as is, without taking into account the pattern of water consumption. The corresponding dose exceeds the WHO recommended value of 0.1 mSv per year for children under the age of one year for 220 cases (17.7%). Background: Prostate brachytherapy (BT) techniques have evolved over the past century. This paper aimed to preserve our collective memory of history and the early development of its technique. We searched articles in PubMed and Google Scholar using keywords referring to authors, dates, and BT technical details, including different radioactive sources and country-specific publications. We reviewed the work published by Holm and Aronowitz. The digital library Internet Archives was used to retrieve original journal articles, science newspaper printings, and government reports, which allowed us to situate the development of BT in its sociopolitical context in Europe and the USA. Our search was conducted in English, French, and German languages., Summary: Early BT methods were developed by European physicians with early access to radium. Technical advancements were made by HH Young, who brought this practice to the USA, where Barringer pioneered the use of radon seeds and low-dose interstitial brachytherapy. While centralized radiotherapy centers, such as Memorial Hospital in New York, emerged for training and research, the high cost of radium and opposing interests made brachytherapy harder to implement in Germany. After World War II, the introduction of man-made radioisotopes allowed experiments with colloidal solutions and new seeds, including I-125. Introduction: Mallinckrodt Chemical Works was a uranium processing facility during the Manhattan Project from 1942 to 1966. Thousands of workers were exposed to low-dose-rates of ionizing radiation from external and internal sources. This third follow-up of 2514 White male employees updates cancer and noncancer mortality potentially associated with radiation and silica dust., Materials and Methods: Individual, annualized organ doses were estimated from film badge records ( n monitored = 2514), occupational chest x-rays ( n  = 2514), uranium urinalysis ( n  = 1868), radium intake through radon breath measurements ( n  = 487), and radon ambient measurements ( n  = 1356). Silica dust exposure from pitchblende processing was estimated ( n  = 1317). Vital status and cause of death determination through 2019 relied upon the National Death Index and Social Security Administration Epidemiological Vital Status Service. The analysis included standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), Cox proportional hazards, and Poisson regression models., Results: Vital status was confirmed for 99.4% of workers (84.0% deceased). For a dose weighting factor of 1 for intakes of uranium, radium, and radon decay products, the mean and median lung doses were 65.6 and 29.9 mGy, respectively. SMRs indicated a difference in health outcomes between salaried and hourly workers, and more brain cancer deaths than expected [SMR: 1.79; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.14, 2.70]. No association was seen between radiation and lung cancer [hazard ratio (HR) at 100 mGy: 0.93; 95%CI: 0.78, 1.11]. The relationship between radiation and kidney cancer observed in the previous follow-up was maintained (HR at 100 mGy: 2.07; 95%CI: 1.12, 3.79). Cardiovascular disease (CVD) also increased significantly with heart dose (HR at 100 mGy: 1.11; 95%CI: 1.02, 1.21). Exposures to dust ≥23.6 mg/m 3 -year were associated with nonmalignant kidney disease (NMKD) (HR: 3.02; 95%CI: 1.12, 8.16) and kidney cancer combined with NMKD (HR: 2.46; 95%CI: 1.04, 5.81), though without evidence of a dose-response per 100 mg/m 3 -year., Conclusions: This third follow-up of Mallinckrodt uranium processors reinforced the results of the previous studies. There was an excess of brain cancers compared with the US population, although no radiation dose-response was detected. The association between radiation and kidney cancer remained, though potentially due to few cases at higher doses. The association between levels of silica dust ≥23.6 mg/m 3 -year and NMKD also remained. No association was observed between radiation and lung cancer. A positive dose-response was observed between radiation and CVD; however, this association may be confounded by smoking, which was unmeasured. Future work will pool these data with other uranium processing worker cohorts within the Million Person Study.

Chemical contamination of seafood has become a global health concern. Carp fish is one of the most widely consumed globally, and several studies have been conducted on the contamination of carp fish with radioisotopes. In the current study, a meta-analysis and probabilistic exposure assessment regarding the Potassium-40 ( 40 K), Polonium-210 ( 210 Po), Radium-226 ( 226 Ra), and Thorium-230 ( 230 Th) in the fillet tissue of carp fish were performed. In this regard, Scopus and PubMed were screened to retrieve the associated citations with on the concentration of radioisotopes in the fillet tissue of carp fish until October 2021. The rank order of radioisotopes in fillet tissue carp fish was 40 K (103.49 Bq kg -1 ) > 210 Po (9.39 Bq kg -1 ) > 226 Ra (0.62 Bq kg -1 ) > 230 Th (0.39 Bq kg -1 ). The highest effective dose due to 210 Po ingestion was observed in Spain (male; 4.44E-05 Sv y -1 , female; 2.67E-06 Sv y -1 ); 40 K (female, 5.07E-07 Sv y -1 ); 226 Ra (male, 9.93E-09 Sv y -1 ). The mean of effective dose (ED) in the male and females in India due to ingestion of 230 Th as result of carp fish consumption was (1.70E-06 Sv y -1 ) and (7.01E-08 Sv y -1 ), respectively. The probabilistic exposure assessment by the Monte Carlo simulation method revealed that consumers of fillet tissue carp fish content of radioisotopes are at a safe range (0.001 Sv y -1 ).

In this study, the radon gas and radium concentration in the bottled mineral water samples was measured. A total of sixty samples were collected from bottled mineral water sold in the markets in Kahramanmaraş. DURRIDGE Rad7 electronic radon detector was used for measurements. Radon and radium activity amounts range from 33.50 ± 1.30 mBq/L to 51.70 ± 2.20 mBq/L, and 2.92 ± 0.15 mBq/L to 4.51 ± 0.26 mBq/L, respectively. Average radon and radium active amounts are 41.67 ± 1.54 mBq/L and 3.63 ± 0.18 mBq/L, respectively. Total annual effective dose values were calculated for these mineral waters according to three different scenarios. In the first of these, it was assumed that natural mineral water was consumed annually instead of 730 L of drinking water (S1). In the second case, 150 L which was the annual average amount of natural mineral water consumed in European Union member countries was used for the annual average amount of natural mineral water consumed by adults (S2). Finally, the annual average amount of natural mineral water consumed in Turkey, 14 L, was used for adults (S3). For scenarios (S1, S2, S3), the total (ingestion + inhalation) annual average dose values ranged from 6.83E-04 mSv/y to 1.05E-03 mSv/y, 1.40E-04 mSv/y to 2.17E-04, and 1.32E-05 mSv/y to 2.03E-05 mSv/y, their average values were 8.49E-04 mSv/y, 1.75E-04 mSv/y, and 1.64E-05 mSv/y, respectively. The measurements of activity concentration of radium ( 226Ra ), thorium ( 232Th) and potassium ( 40K ) natural radionuclides using high purity germanium ( HPGe ) detector to assess harmful effects on people residing around Royal Uranium Site, Sikar, Rajasthan, India. The activity concentrations range from 29.03 ± 3.72 to 69.95 ± 4.07 Bq/kg for 226Ra with a mean value of 47.01 Bq/kg, 57.99 ± 6.13 to 113.94 ± 6.54 Bq/kg with a mean value of 86.56 Bq/kg for 232Th,678.19 ± 76.36 to 1426.55 ± 81.32 Bq/kg for 40K with a mean value of 1195 Bq/kg. Average Radium Equivalent Activity was measured 261.59 ± 35.48 Bq/kg. The total outdoor absorbed gamma dose rate ranged from 78.42 to 157.91 nGy/h with a mean value of 122.12 nGy/h.The average annual effective dose equivalent outdoors and indoors was found 0.75 mSv.Mean external (Hex) and internal (Hin) hazard indices are measured 0.70 and 0.82, respectively, for the study area., (© The Author(s) 2023. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the natural radioactivity and potential radiological risks of frequently used building materials in Uttara Kannada district. Using an High purity Germanium Detector (HPGe) detector-based gamma-ray spectrometer, the activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K was determined. The activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the construction materials vary from 13.78 ± 0.90 to 151.9 ± 1.85, 14.21 ± 0.80 to 207.72 ± 2.9 and 55.26 ± 1.20 to 1298.24 ± 25 Bq kg-1 with an average value of 40.57 ± 1.37,60.13 ± 1.70 and 425.38 ± 4.75 Bq kg-1 having a geometric mean of 33.07, 46.49 and 290.20 Bq kg-1, respectively. The mean annual effective dose equivalent was found to be 0.68 mSv y-1 and is less than the International Commission on Radiological Protection proposed acceptable limit of 1 mSv y-1. Every creature on earth undergoes continuous exposure to natural background radiation. Hence, it is crucial to monitor systematically, the degree of radioactivity in the ecosystem and possible radiological health hazards. The present study attempt to investigate the dynamics of prominent radionuclides and various radiological parameters associated with terrestrial gamma radiations along the littoral regions of the Kollam district, a well-reported high background radiation area in India. The gamma radiation exposure rate along the coastal belt of Kollam was measured using a portable Micro-R-survey meter and associated radiological parameters have been calculated and compared with the global average values. The result indicates that the radiological parameters cross the safe limits recommended by the UNSCEAR 2000. A high value is found in the shoreline of Chavara, with a maximum absorbed dose rate of 11 945.1nGyh-1. The monazite-enriched black sand widely distributed all along the coast, which contains natural radioisotopes such as 40K, 226Ra and 232Th, has greatly contributed to the increase in radiation levels in the regions., (© The Author(s) 2023. Despite the EU states being under the umbrella of the European Directive 2013/59/Euratom, a certain degree of heterogeneity may be noticed in the implementation of EU recommendations concerning regulation and handling of NORM into national legislation and practice. This is mainly a result of the still existing incomplete international knowledge about different phenomena related to NORM. Therefore, the attempt to advance the understanding of the behaviour and exposure of NORM is at the core of the European RadoNorm project. Within this context, an international survey on NORM has been prepared. The goals of the survey were to gather information and data from European countries that will contribute making an updated and/or new (a) systematic overview of NORM exposure situations and their analysis with respect to different radiation protection aspects, (b) knowledge about applied radioecological models in a variety of NORM exposure situations to improve evaluation of possible exposure doses and risk for population and workers, as well as of environmental risk, and (c) overview of overall mitigation measures applied in NORM involving industries, and possible remediation activities applied at NORM affected legacy sites. The survey is built upon an extended list of NORM-involving industries and processes, covers general aspects of NORM, presence of multi-stressors, as well as practical procedures applied in management and regulation, also in the context of a circular economy. The survey responses were obtained from 19 countries. An analysis of survey responses proved that NORM control is still a complex issue for many countries, and the recently-introduced regulatory solutions require further interpretation for developing procedures and good practices. Several machine learning algorithms including artificial neural networks (ANN), random forest (RF) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) were used to construct a radon flux density (RFD) map of Moscow for the purpose of finding which one of them would be the best for radon delineation. Predictors used included geological soil classes for quaternary and some pre-quaternary sediment types, elevations of quaternary and pre-quaternary layers, 226 Ra content in soil, ambient dose equivalent rate (ADER), distances to geodynamically active zones and lineaments. Training of the models was performed using previously collected radon flux density data from approximately ten thousand of measurements over 756 sites. ANN and RF algorithms produced the best maps with high correlation coefficients and low mean squared error, while MARS failed to get a high correlation coefficient and low mean squared error. Predictions made using RF were found to be more conservative due to higher prediction values of RFD, while those made using ANN were likely more realistic in their prediction value distribution, leading to the conclusion that RF is better for the purposes of delineation, while ANN is better for predicting average RFD values. The purpose of this survey was to examine the status of radiotherapy in Japan based on the cases registered in the Japanese Radiation Oncology Database (JROD), from 2015 to 2021, and to provide basic data to help improve the usefulness of the JROD in the future. The study population consisted of patients who underwent radiotherapy between 2014 and 2020 and did not opt out of the study. The survey item data analyzed in this study were entered into the database at each radiotherapy institution by referring to medical records from the preceding year. Our results show that the number of registered radiotherapy institutions and cases increased by ~50% in 2019 compared to those in 2015 (to 113 institutions and 60 575 cases, respectively). Among the survey item categories, the registration rate was lowest for prognostic information (13.9% on average over the 7-year period). In terms of the Japanese Society for Radiation Oncology disease site, the breast; lung, trachea and mediastinum and urogenital sites accounted for >50% of the total cases. The average survival and mortality rates over the 7-year study period were 67.4 and 17.4%, respectively. The X-ray radiotherapy completion rate exceeded 90% for all years and across all disease categories. 192Ir-based brachytherapy and 223Ra-based radionuclide therapy accounted for an average of 61.9 and 44.6%, respectively, of all corresponding cases over the 7-year period. This study is concerned with measuring and analyzing all the parameters that affect the increase of radioactive forcing values within foodstuffs. Radon gas and radioactive doses of various foodstuffs collected from the markets of the Jazan region were measured using the nuclear track detector (CR-39). The results showed that agricultural soils and food processing methods influence increasing the concentration of radon gas. The highest concentration of radon gas was recorded in the milk sample S11 with a value of 1204.65±108.00 Bq/m 3 , while the lowest value was in the sugar sample S31 with a value of 78.77±4.15 Bq/m 3 . The radon gas concentration results for flour, rice, sugar, and salt were all within the recommended limit, while 33% of the results of tea and 84% of the results of powdered milk were higher than the recommended limit. The average effective dose for different foodstuffs ranged from 14.82±1.92 to 2.61±0.25 mSv/y. There was a strong correlation between exhalation rates and radium values. This work presents the first in-depth study of soil radioactivity in the mangrove forest of Bangladesh part of the Sundarbans. It used HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry to measure the amount of natural radioactivity in soil samples from Karamjal and Harbaria sites of the world's largest mangrove forest. The activity concentrations of most of the 226Ra (14±2 Bqkg-1 to 35±4 Bqkg-1) and 232Th (30±5 Bqkg-1 to 50±9 Bqkg-1) lie within the world average values, but the 40K concentration (370± 44 Bqkg-1 to 660±72 Bqkg-1) was found to have exceeded the world average value. The evaluation of radiological hazard parameters revealed that the outdoor absorbed dose rate (maximum 73.25 nGyh-1) and outdoor annual effective dose (maximum 0.09 mSvy-1) for most samples exceeded the corresponding world average values. The elevated concentration of 40K is mainly due to the salinity intrusion, usage of fertilizers and agricultural runoff, and migration of waste effluents along the riverbanks. The liver is a common site of cancer metastases. Systemic therapy is widely accepted as the standard treatment for liver metastases (LM), although select patients with liver oligometastases may be candidates for potentially curative liver resection. Recent data support the role of nonsurgical local therapies such as ablation, external beam radiotherapy, embolization, and hepatic artery infusion therapy for management of LM. Additionally, for patients with advanced, symptomatic LM, local therapies may provide palliative benefit. The American Radium Society gastrointestinal expert panel, including members representing radiation oncology, interventional radiology, surgical oncology, and medical oncology, performed a systemic review and developed Appropriate Use Criteria for the use of nonsurgical local therapies for LM. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses methodology was used. These studies were used to inform the expert panel, which then rated the appropriateness of various treatments in seven representative clinical scenarios through a well-established consensus methodology (modified Delphi). Mineral springs in Massif Central, France can be characterized by higher levels of natural radioactivity in comparison to the background. The biota in these waters is constantly under radiation exposure mainly from the α-emitters of the natural decay chains, with 226Ra in sediments ranging from 21 Bq/g to 43 Bq/g and 222Rn activity concentrations in water up to 4600 Bq/L. This study couples for the first time micro- and nanodosimetric approaches to radioecology by combining GATE and Geant4-DNA to assess the dose rates and DNA damages to microorganisms living in these naturally radioactive ecosystems. It focuses on unicellular eukaryotic microalgae (diatoms) which display an exceptional abundance of teratological forms in the most radioactive mineral springs in Auvergne. Using spherical geometries for the microorganisms and based on γ-spectrometric analyses, we evaluate the impact of the external exposure to 1000 Bq/L 222Rn dissolved in the water and 30 Bq/g 226Ra in the sediments. Our results show that the external dose rates for diatoms are significant (9.7 μGy/h) and comparable to the threshold (10 μGy/h) for the protection of the ecosystems suggested by the literature. In a first attempt of simulating the radiation induced DNA damage on this species, the rate of DNA Double Strand Breaks per day is estimated to 1.11E-04. The 228 Th: 228 Ra ratios of foliage and organic soil horizons evolve with time following a predictable radioactive decay law and thus provide a new chronometer for absolute age-dating of plant and soil organic matter. Preferential uptake of 228 Th ( t 0.5 = 1.9 years) and 228 Ra ( t 0.5 = 5.9 years) by canopy tree species, ferns, and mosses, drives disequilibrium in the 232 Th- 228 Ra- 228 Th radioactive decay series within forest vegetation and organic soils. With examples from northeastern USA, we verify a new 228 Th: 228 Ra age model by demonstrating its concordance with the fallout radionuclide chronometer 7 Be: 210 Pb in the 0 to 5-year time frame [ R 2 = 0.87, RMSE = 0.5 years]. At our locality, canopy tree species assimilate 228 Th with a typical initial ratio ( 228 Th: 228 Ra) 0 ∼ 0.3, but in several instances, both deciduous and coniferous tree species show a preference for Th over Ra with ( 228 Th: 228 Ra) 0 exceeding 5. While the 228 Th: 228 Ra system is restricted to organic soil horizons, concordance of 228 Th: 228 Ra with established 7 Be: 210 Pb and 241 Am bomb-pulse chronometers establishes a coherent age-dating system of soil organic matter based on three independent chronometers and five particle reactive metals, and spanning 0-200 years in time scale that encompasses both organic and mineral soils to depths of up to 30 cm. Concordance indicates that these metals all follow common processes of organometallic colloid formation and migration and, in conjunction with 14 C, may open new opportunities to understand soil pedogenic processes that regulate the storage of carbon and atmospheric metals such as Pb and Hg.

Across the United States, road palliatives are applied to roads for maintenance operations that improve road safety. In the winter, solid rock salts and brine solutions are used to reduce the accumulation of snow and ice, while in the summer, dust suppressants are used to minimize fugitive dust emissions. Many of these products are chloride-based salts that have been linked to freshwater salinization, toxicity to aquatic organisms, and damage to infrastructure. To minimize these impacts, organic products have been gaining attention, though their widespread adoption has been limited due to their higher cost. In some states, using produced water from conventionally drilled oil and gas wells (OGPWs) on roads is permitted as a cost-effective alternative to commercial products, despite its typically elevated concentrations of heavy metals, radioactivity, and organic micropollutants. In this study, 17 road palliatives used for winter and summer road maintenance were collected and their chemical composition and potential human toxicity were characterized. Results from this study demonstrated that liquid brine solutions had elevated levels of trace metals (Zn, Cu, Sr, Li) that could pose risks to human and environmental health. The radium activity of liquid calcium chloride products was comparable to the activity of OGPWs and could be a significant source of radium to the environment. The organic fractions of evaluated OGPWs and chloride-based products posed little risk to human health. The utilization of phosphorite deposits as an industrial resource is of paramount importance, and its sustainability largely depends on ensuring safe and responsible practices. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of phosphorite deposits for industrial applications such as the production of phosphoric acid and phosphatic fertilizers. To achieve this goal, the study meticulously examines the geochemical characteristics of the deposits, investigates the distribution of natural Radioactivity within them, and assesses the potential radiological risk associated with their use. The phosphorites are massive and collected from different beds within the Duwi Formation at the Hamadat mining area. They are grain-supported and composed of phosphatic pellets, bioclasts (bones), non-phosphatic minerals, and cement. Geochemically, phosphorites contain high concentrations of P2O5 (23.59-28.36 wt.%) and CaO (40.85-44.35 wt.%), with low amounts of Al2O3 (0.23-0.51 wt.%), TiO2 (0.01-0.03 wt.%), Fe2O3 (1.14-2.28 wt.%), Na2O (0.37-1.19 wt.%), K2O (0.03-0.12 wt.%), and MnO (0.08-0.18 wt.%), suggesting the low contribution of the detrital material during their deposition. Moreover, they belong to contain enhanced U concentration (55-128 ppm). They are also enriched with Sr, Ba, Cr, V, and Zn and depleted in Th, Zr, and Rb, which strongly supports the low detrital input during the formation of the Hamadat phosphorites. The high Radioactivity of the studied phosphorites is probably due to the widespread occurrence of phosphatic components (e.g., apatite) that accommodate U in high concentrations. Gamma spectrometry based on NaI (Tl) crystal 3×3 has been used to measure occurring radionuclides in the phosphorite samples. The results indicate that the radioactive concentrations' average values of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K are 184.18±9.19, 125.82±6.29, and 63.82±3.19 Bq Kg-1, respectively. Additionally, evaluations have been made of the radiological hazards. The calculated risk indicators exceeded the recommended national and world averages. Introduction: Osteosarcopenia is the progressive loss of musculoskeletal structure and functionality, contributing to disability and mortality. Despite complex interactions between bone and muscle, osteosarcopenia prevention and treatment in men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) focuses predominantly on bone health. It is unknown whether Radium-223 (Ra-223) therapy affects sarcopenia., Methods: We identified 52 patients with mCRPC who had received Ra-223 and had a baseline plus ≥1 follow-up abdominopelvic CT scan. The total contour area (TCA) and averaged Hounsfield units (HU) of the left and right psoas muscles were obtained at the inferior L3 endplate, and the psoas muscle index (PMI) was calculated therefrom. Intrapatient musculoskeletal changes were analyzed across various time points., Results: TCA and PMI gradually declined over the study period (P = .002, P = .003, respectively), but Ra-223 therapy did not accelerate sarcopenia, nor the decline of HU compared to the pre-Ra-223 period. The median overall survival of patients with baseline sarcopenia was numerically worse (14.93 vs. 23.23 months, HR 0.612, P = .198)., Conclusions: Ra-223 does not accelerate sarcopenia. Thus, worsening muscle parameters in men with mCRPC undergoing Ra-223 therapy are attributable to other factors. Importance: Thymic carcinoma is rare, and its oncologic management is controversial due to a paucity of prospective data. For this reason, multidisciplinary consensus guidelines are crucial to guide oncologic management., Objective: To develop expert multidisciplinary consensus guidelines on the management of common presentations of thymic carcinoma., Evidence Review: Case variants spanning the spectrum of stage I to IV thymic carcinoma were developed by the 15-member multidisciplinary American Radium Society (ARS) Thoracic Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) expert panel to address management controversies. A comprehensive review of the English-language medical literature from 1980 to 2021 was performed to inform consensus guidelines. Variants and procedures were evaluated by the panel using modified Delphi methodology. Agreement/consensus was defined as less than or equal to 3 rating points from median. Consensus recommendations were then approved by the ARS Executive Committee and subject to public comment per established ARS procedures., Findings: The ARS Thoracic AUC panel identified 89 relevant references and obtained consensus for all procedures evaluated for thymic carcinoma. Minimally invasive thymectomy was rated as usually inappropriate (regardless of stage) due to the infiltrative nature of thymic carcinomas. There was consensus that conventionally fractionated radiation (1.8-2 Gy daily) to a dose of 45 to 60 Gy adjuvantly and 60 to 66 Gy in the definitive setting is appropriate and that elective nodal irradiation is inappropriate. For radiation technique, the panel recommended use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy or proton therapy (rather than 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy) to reduce radiation exposure to the heart and lungs., Conclusions and Relevance: The ARS Thoracic AUC panel has developed multidisciplinary consensus guidelines for various presentations of thymic carcinoma, perhaps the most well referenced on the topic.

Hydrocarbon spills that reach the subsurface can modify aquifer geochemical conditions. Biogeochemical zones typically form proximal to the source zone that include iron (Fe(III)) and manganese (Mn(III/IV)) (hydr)oxide reduction, with potential to release associated geogenic contaminants to groundwater. Here, multi-level monitoring systems are used to investigate radium ( 226 Ra, 228 Ra) activities in an aquifer contaminated with a mixture of chlorinated solvents, ketones, and aromatics occurring as a dense non-aqueous phase liquid in the source zone. 226 Ra activities are up to 10 times higher than background 60 m downgradient from the source zone, where pH is lower, total dissolved solid concentrations are higher, and conditions are methanogenic. Correlations indicate that Fe and Mn (hydr)oxide reduction and sorption site competition are likely responsible for elevated Ra activities within the dissolved phase plume. 226 Ra activities return to background within the Fe(III)/SO 4 2- -reducing zone 600 m downgradient from the source, near the middle of the dissolved phase plume. Geochemical models indicate that sorption to secondary phases (e.g., clays) is important in sequestering Ra within the plume. Although maximum Ra activities within the plume are well below the U.S. drinking water standard, elevated activities compared to background emphasize the importance of investigating Ra and other trace elements at hydrocarbon-impacted sites.
