Lake Burlan, a lentic ecosystem artificially created by untreated runoff from adjacent rice fields, is located in the Amazon region within the dry forests of northern Peru. This body of water plays a fundamental role in agriculture and recreational activities in the area, which are fundamental to the local economy. This research aimed to evaluate the water quality of Lake Burlan using the Water Quality Index of Peru (WQI-PE). In addition, both spatial and depth variations of limnological parameters and trace elements were determined. The WQI-PE was calculated at seven sampling stations at two depths (surface level and one meter), using 18 limnological parameters and nine trace elements. The WQI-PE assessment indicated that the lake water quality ranged from poor to fair for both depths. Statistical analysis showed that nine limnological parameters and five trace elements showed spatial differences across seven sampling stations, while three limnological parameters and two trace elements showed depth-dependent variations. Concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead were in exceedance of the national and international standards on environmental water quality. Therefore, the water quality of Lake Burlan is affected mainly by the impact of the surrounding rice fields and recreational activities. Background: The core vector control tools used to reduce malaria prevalence are currently long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), and indoor residual spraying (IRS). These interventions are hindered by insecticide resistance and behavioural adaptation by malaria vectors. Thus, for effective interruption of malaria transmission, there is a need to develop novel vector control interventions and technologies to address the above challenges. Larviciding using drones was experimented as an innovative tool that could complement existing indoor interventions to control malaria., Methods: A non-randomized larviciding trial was carried out in irrigated rice fields in sub-urban Kigali, Rwanda. Potential mosquito larval habitats in study sites were mapped and subsequently sprayed using multirotor drones. Application of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) (Vectobac ® WDG) was followed by entomological surveys that were performed every two weeks over a ten-month period. Sampling of mosquito larvae was done with dippers while adult mosquitoes were collected using CDC miniature light traps (CDC-LT) and pyrethrum spraying collection (PSC) methods. Malaria cases were routinely monitored through community health workers in villages surrounding the study sites., Results: The abundance of all-species mosquito larvae, Anopheles larvae and all-species pupae declined by 68.1%, 74.6% and 99.6%, respectively. Larval density was reduced by 93.3% for total larvae, 95.3% for the Anopheles larvae and 61.9% for pupae. The total adult mosquitoes and Anopheles gambiae sensu lato collected using CDC-Light trap declined by 60.6% and 80% respectively. Malaria incidence also declined significantly between intervention and control sites (U = 20, z = - 2.268, p = 0.023)., Conclusions: The larviciding using drone technology implemented in Rwanda demonstrated a substantial reduction in abundance and density of mosquito larvae and, concomitant decline in adult mosquito populations and malaria incidences in villages contingent to the treatment sites. A comprehensive and precise evaluation of Arthropoda diversity in agricultural landscapes can enhance biological pest control strategies. We used Malaise traps and sweep nets to collect insects from three double-cropping paddy fields. DNA was extracted from the ethanol preservative of the Malaise traps and from tissue samples of selected parasitoid wasps. This was followed by amplification using DNA barcoding primers to prepare high-throughput sequencing libraries. We annotated a total of 4956 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), encompassing 174 genera and 32 families of parasitoid wasps. The ethanol filter method efficiently captured a wide range of information. However, the method has low resolution and may result in a reduced estimate of species abundance. Additional insect species were also identified in the parasitoid samples. This suggests that high throughput sequencing from adult parasitoid wasps can also detect host species, enabling a better understanding of host species and providing insights into food webs.

Rice cultivation in Southeast Asia is a One Health interface intersecting human, animal, and environmental health. This complexity creates a potential for zoonotic transmission between diverse reservoirs. Bats harbor viruses like Nipah; mosquitoes transmit arboviruses; rodents spread hantaviruses. Domestic animals- including pigs with influenza and dogs with rabies and aquatic animals can also transmit pathogens. Climate change and urbanization may further disrupt rice agro-ecologies. This paper explores animal viral reservoirs, vectors, and historical practices associated with risk in rice farming. Climate and land use changes could enhance spillover. Solutions are proposed, including surveillance of animals, vectors, water, and air to detect threats before major outbreaks, such as improved biosecurity, hygiene, and livestock vaccinations. Antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) present significant risks to environments and public health. In particular, there is increasing awareness of the role of soil nitrogen in ARG dissemination. Here, we investigated the connections between antibiotic resistome and nitrogen-cycling microbes in paddy soil by performing five-year field experiments with the treatments of no nitrogen fertilization (CK), reduced chemical nitrogen fertilization (LN), conventional chemical nitrogen fertilization (CN) and plant-derived organic nitrogen fertilization (ON). Compared with CK treatment, CN and ON treatments significantly increased soil NH 4 + and TN concentrations by 25.4%-56.5% and 10.4%-20.1%, respectively. Redundancy analysis revealed significantly positive correlation of NH 4 + with most ARGs, including tetA, macB and barA. Correspondingly, CN and ON treatments enhanced ARG abundances by 21.9%-23.2%. Moreover, CN and ON treatments promoted nitrate/nitrite-reducing bacteria and linked the corresponding N-cycling functional genes (narG, narH, nirK and nrfA) with most ARGs. Metagenomic binning was performed and identified Gemmatimonadaceae, Caulobacteraceae, Ilumatobacteraceae and Anaerolineaceae as hosts for both ARGs and nitrate/nitrite reduction genes that were enriched by CN and ON treatments. Soil resistome risk score analysis indicated that, although there was increased relation of ARG to nitrogen-cycling microorganisms with nitrogen fertilizer application, the environmental risk of ARGs was not increased due to the lower distribution of ARGs in pathogens. Resource partitioning among tropical bats in agricultural areas of Peninsular Malaysia remains unclear. This study was conducted to evaluate resource partitioning among bats by examining their fecal samples. The main bat species sampled included: Rhinolophus coelophyllus , Rhinolophus malayanus , Rhinolophus pusillus , Rhinolophus refulgens , Taphozous melanopogon and Hipposideros larvatus . Two harp traps were set at different elevations on a hilltop (Gunung Keriang) and two high nets were used in neighboring rice fields at three sites, for three consecutive nights per sampling from April 2021 to February 2022. A total of 301 bats and 1,505 pellets were analyzed using a conventional approach which examined the fecal sample under the microscope. All of the bat species within the study had insects from the order Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera and Hemiptera in their diet. Larger bats exhibited a greater variety of prey consumption. Male individuals were observed to be generalists while female individuals were specialists, particularly during pregnancy and lactating reproductive stages. Bat species and insect order had a significant impact on the percentage fragment frequency of the insects consumed. Rhinolophus coelophyllus specialized in feeding on Coleoptera and Diptera, H. larvatus fed on Coleoptera, R. malayanus fed on Hemiptera, R. pusillus and T. melanopogon fed on Lepidoptera. Future molecular analysis can be carried out to further identify the insect pests consumed by these bats up to species level. Global warming is influenced by an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration in the atmosphere. Consequently, Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) is the main factor that influences the exchange of carbon (C) between the atmosphere and the soil. As a result, agricultural ecosystems are a potential carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sink, particularly rice paddies ( Oryza sativa ). Therefore, a static chamber with a portable CO 2 analyzer was designed and implemented for three rice plots to monitor CO 2 emissions. Furthermore, a weather station was installed to record meteorological variables. The vegetative, reproductive, and maturation phases of the crop lasted 95, 35, and 42 days post-sowing (DPS), respectively. In total, the crop lasted 172 DPS. Diurnal NEE had the highest CO 2 absorption capacity at 10:00 a.m. for the tillering stage (82 and 89 DPS), floral primordium (102 DPS), panicle initiation (111 DPS), and flowering (126 DPS). On the other hand, the maximum CO 2 emission at 82, 111, and 126 DPS occurred at 6:00 p.m. At 89 and 102 DPS, it occurred at 4:00 and 6:00 a.m., respectively. NEE in the vegetative stage was -25 μmolCO2 m2 s-1, and in the reproductive stage, it was -35 μmolCO2 m2 s-1, indicating the highest absorption capacity of the plots. The seasonal dynamics of NEE were mainly controlled by the air temperature inside the chamber (Tc) (R = -0.69), the relative humidity inside the chamber (RHc) (R = -0.66), and net radiation (R n ) (R = -0.75). These results are similar to previous studies obtained via chromatographic analysis and eddy covariance (EC), which suggests that the portable analyzer could be an alternative for CO 2 monitoring.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice fields has been recognized as a severe global agro-environmental issue. To reach the goal of controlling Cd risk, we must pay more attention and obtain an in-depth understanding of the environmental behavior, uptake and translocation of Cd in soil-rice systems. However, to date, these aspects still lack sufficient exploration and summary. Here, we critically reviewed (i) the processes and transfer proteins of Cd uptake/transport in the soil-rice system, (ii) a series of soil and other environmental factors affecting the bioavailability of Cd in paddies, and (iii) the latest advances in regard to remediation strategies while producing rice. We propose that the correlation between the bioavailability of Cd and environmental factors must be further explored to develop low Cd accumulation and efficient remediation strategies in the future. Second, the mechanism of Cd uptake in rice mediated by elevated CO 2 also needs to be given more attention. Meanwhile, more scientific planting methods (direct seeding and intercropping) and suitable rice with low Cd accumulation are important measures to ensure the safety of rice consumption. In addition, the relevant Cd efflux transporters in rice have yet to be revealed, which will promote molecular breeding techniques to address the current Cd-contaminated soil-rice system. The potential for efficient, durable, and low-cost soil remediation technologies and foliar amendments to limit Cd uptake by rice needs to be examined in the future. Mediterranean wetlands provide many ecosystem services to humans and other organisms. However, these services are being increasingly damaged. The prioritization of ecosystem services is essential to start a decision-making process focused on environmental policies, highlighting the necessity of equilibrium between sustainability and human well-being. This study analyzes the similarities and differences among the ecosystem services provided by the Spanish RAMSAR Mediterranean wetlands, where rice production is the main economic activity. These areas are the Ebro Delta, the Albufera Natural Park and the Guadalquivir Marshes (Doñana Biosphere Reserve). Despite being different areas, environmental and agricultural policies sometimes treat their characteristics without distinction since they are conceptually englobed in the same category. This analysis aims to study whether geographical and sociocultural factors could influence the prioritization of ecosystem services. The prioritization of the three study areas was conducted using the Analytic Network Process (ANP), a multi-criteria decision-making method which allows decision-makers to manage the ecosystem's complexity. The results are helpful for future policies and in understanding the complex network of interconnections among ecosystem services. Additionally, results show that there are statistically significant differences in priorities among the three study areas due to geographical and cultural reasons. Moreover, results have also shown that decision-makers' judgements influenced the priorities depending on their background and personal or professional preferences. Introduction: Deep insights into adhering soil of root zones (rhizosphere and rhizoplane) microbial community could provide a better understanding of the plant-microbe relationship. To better understand the dynamics of these microbial assemblies over the plant life cycle in rhizodeposition along rice roots., Methods: Here, we investigated bacterial distribution in bulk, rhizosphere, and rhizoplane soils at tillering, heading, and mature stage, from rice ( Oryza sativa ) fields of the Northeast China., Results and Discussion: Our results revealed that soil bacterial α-diversity and community composition were significantly affected by root compartment niches but not by temporal change. Compared to rhizoplane soils in the same period, bulk in the heading and rhizosphere in the mature had the largest increase in Shannon's index, with 11.02 and 14.49% increases, respectively. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, and Acidobacteria are predominant across all soil samples, bulk soil had more phyla increased across the growing season than that of root related-compartments. Deterministic mechanisms had a stronger impact on the bacterial community in the compartments connected to the roots, with the relative importance of the bulk soil, rhizoplane and rhizosphere at 83, 100, and 56%, respectively. Because of ecological niche drivers, the bacterial networks in bulk soils exhibit more complex networks than rhizosphere and rhizoplane soils, reflected by more nodes, edges, and connections. More module hub and connector were observed in bulk (6) and rhizoplane (5) networks than in rhizosphere (2). We also detected shifts from bulk to rhizoplane soils in some functional guilds of bacteria, which changed from sulfur and nitrogen utilization to more carbon and iron cycling processes. Taken together, our results suggest distinct bacterial network structure and distribution patterns among rhizosphere, rhizoplane, and bulk soils, which could possibly result in potential functional differentiation. The incorporation of post-harvest crop straw and application of industrial and agricultural wastes to paddy soils increase rice crop yields and soil fertility. However, the impacts of combined applications of straw and waste products on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming potential (GWP) of paddy soils are unclear. Therefore, we conducted a field experiment in subtropical rice in China to test the effects of applications of straw, straw+biochar, straw+shell slag, straw+gypsum slag, straw+silicon, and straw+steel slag on rice yields, GWP, and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). The results showed that, compared to the control, cumulative emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from paddy soils were 15.2, 16.9, and 36.6 % lower following application of straw+steel slag, straw+silicon, and straw+gypsum, respectively, and cumulative emissions of methane (CH 4 ) were 5.0 and 62.1 % lower following application of straw+steel slag and straw+gypsum, respectively. Meanwhile, relative to the addition of straw alone, application of straw+steel slag and straw+gypsum reduced GHG emissions largely due to reductions in CO 2 emissions, further declining the GWP of CO 2 and GHGI. In addition, temperature sensitivity (Q 10 ) of CO 2 emissions was highest following application of straw+silicon and lowest following application of straw+gypsum. There were no treatment effects on mean dissolved porewater concentrations of CO 2 , CH 4 , or nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and soil emissions of CO 2 were negatively correlated with mean dissolved concentrations of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O. Rice yields were reduced following application of straw+gypsum and unaffected by the other treatments. Although rice production landscapes are often the scene of homicides, vertebrate decomposition and associated arthropods have never been described from rice paddies. Tropical rice landscapes are typically composed of irrigated/non-irrigated rice fields, fallow land (i.e., uncultivated fields), and low earthen levees (bunds) used as access pathways. The specific microclimatic and environmental conditions associated with each subunit of rice field landscapes are likely to impact carcass decomposition as well as the arthropod species associated with carrion. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the combined effects of constraints on arthropod colonization and survival, scarcity of necromass, limited habitat architecture, and recurrent disturbance limit the ability of carrion-related arthropods to colonize corpses and large carcasses in tropical rice-fields. Our results from monitoring pig carcasses in Philippine rice fields indicated that vertebrate decomposition in irrigated fields was slower and incomplete when compared to non-irrigated fields and bunds. Carcasses were colonized by a small complex of carrion-related arthropods that differed in composition and relative species abundance between dry bunds and relatively humid rice paddies. Fire ants (Solenopsis germinata) were observed frequently on carcasses exposed on bunds, rarely in non-irrigated fields, and almost never in irrigated fields. The presence of fire ants was associated with reduced blow fly (Chrysomya megacephala) abundance. Taken together, this indicates that the arthropod fauna associated with carcasses in tropical rice fields is relatively simple in contrast to the generally high arthropod diversity reported for other ecosystems at tropical latitudes. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from rice fields have huge effects on climate change. Low-cost systems and management practices to quantify and reduce GHGs emission rates are needed to achieve a better climate. The typical GHGs estimation processes are expensive and mainly depend on high-cost laboratory equipment. This study introduces a low-cost sensor-based GHG sampling and estimation system for rice fields. For this, a fully automatic gas chamber with a sensor-integrated gas accumulator and quantifier unit was designed and implemented to study its performance in the estimation efficiency of greenhouse gases (CH 4 , N 2 O, and CO 2 ) from rice fields for two crop seasons. For each crop season, three paddy plots were prepared at the experimental site and then subjected to different irrigation methods (continuous flooding (CF), intermittent flooding (IF), and controlled intermittent flooding (CIF)) and fertilizer treatments to study the production and emission rates of GHGs throughout the crop growing season at regular intervals. A weather station was installed on the site to record the seasonal temperature and rainfall events. The seasonal total CH 4 emission was affected by the effects of irrigation treatments. The mean CH 4 emission in the CIF field was smaller than in other treatments. CH 4 and N 2 O emission peaks were high during the vegetative and reproductive phases of rice growth, respectively. The results indicated that CIF treatment is most suitable in terms of rice productivity and higher water use efficiency. The application of nitrogen fertilizers produced some peaks in N 2 O emissions. On the whole, the proposed low-cost GHGs estimation system performed well during both crop seasons and it was found that the adaption of CIF treatment in rice fields could significantly reduce GHG emissions and increase rice productivity. The research results also suggested some mitigation strategies that could reduce the production of GHGs from rice fields.

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (eCO 2 ) greatly impacts greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of CH 4 and N 2 O from rice fields. Although eCO 2 generally stimulates GHG emissions in the short term (<5 years) experiments, the responses to long-term (≥10 years) eCO 2 remain poorly known. Here we show, through a series of experiments and meta-analysis, that the eCO 2 does not necessarily increase CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from rice paddies. In an experiment of free-air CO 2 enrichment for 13-15 years, CH 4 and N 2 O emissions were decreased by 11-54% and 33-54%, respectively. The decline of CH 4 emissions was related to the reduction of CH 4 production and enhancement of CH 4 oxidation via raising soil Eh and soil-water interface [O 2 ] under eCO 2 . Moreover, the eCO 2 significantly decreased NH 4 + -N content, suggesting a reduction of soil nitrification and thereby N 2 O emissions. A meta-analysis showed that CH 4 and N 2 O emissions were stimulated under short-term eCO 2 while reduced under long-term eCO 2 . The eCO 2 -induced increase in yield and biomass and the ratio of mcrA genes/pmoA genes declined with eCO 2 duration, indicating an eCO 2 -stimulation of methanogenesis lower than that of methanotrophy over time by fewer increased substrates. Upscaling the results of meta-analysis, the eCO 2 -induced global paddy CH 4 and N 2 O emissions shifted from an increase (+0.17 Pg CO 2 -eq year -1 ) in the short term into a decrease (-0.11 Pg CO 2 -eq year -1 ) in the long term. The lectotype of Chara pelosiana Avetta 1898 was designated in 2000 by Langangen, who merged the species with Chara fibrosa Agardh ex Bruzelius. Chara pelosiana belongs to the section Agardhia Wood, but the true identity of the species has yet to be confirmed. The purpose of this work is to show some historical and morphological findings regarding this enigmatic species, on the basis of the analysis of herbarium specimens. The original material, which was studied by Avetta, is missing in Italian herbaria, but portions of it have been found in the Herbarium of Jena. Historical research on botanists related with this species resulted in the discovery of several specimens to be considered "original material", and new unpublished localities in Northern Italy. Morphological observations have been made on portions of herbarium specimens as a contribution to unveil the taxonomic identity of this taxon. The specimens are diplostichous with ecorticate branchlets, have stipulodes in a single row, one or two per branchlet, and spine cell up to 1 mm long.

Mining activities and high geological background are considered the important factors causing heavy metal(loid)s accumulation in rice fields of karst area. In this study, the contents, main sources, and the factors influencing bio-availability of heavy metal(loid)s were determined using conditional inference tree (CIT), random forest (RF), and geostatistical analyses with 105 soil samples collected from rice fields in karst area. Contamination by Cd, Hg, As, and Pb in soil was relatively serious in the study area in which the compound pollution was highly similar to that in the flooded area. CIT and RF effectively identified the contributions of natural and anthropogenic inputs of soil heavy metal(loid)s. Concentrations of Pb, As, and Hg were closely associated with human inputs whose cumulative contribution rates reached 68%, 87%, and 86%, respectively. Industrial activities (28%) and geogenic characteristics (44%) were primary sources of Cd accumulation. The soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM), distance from city center, the contents of heavy metal(loid)s in soil, and industry type were the most important factors influencing bio-availability of heavy metal(loid)s. Methanotrophs are aerobic to micro-aerophilic bacteria, which oxidize and utilize methane, the second most important greenhouse gas. The community structure of the methanotrophs in rice fields worldwide has been studied mainly using culture-independent methods. Very few studies have focused on culturing methanotrophs from rice fields. We developed a unique method for the cultivation of methanotrophs from rice field samples. Here, we used a modified dilute nitrate mineral salts (dNMS) medium, with two cycles of dilution till extinction series cultivation with prolonged incubation time, and used agarose in the solid medium. The cultivation approach resulted in the isolation of methanotrophs from seven genera from the three major groups: Type Ia ( Methylomonas , Methylomicrobium , and Methylocucumis ), Type Ib ( Methylocaldum and Methylomagnum ), and Type II ( Methylocystis and Methylosinus ). Growth was obtained till 10 -6 -10 -8 dilutions in the first dilution series, indicating the culturing of dominant methanotrophs. Our study was supported by 16S rRNA gene-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) of three of the rice samples. Our analyses and comparison with the global scenario suggested that the cultured members represented the major detected taxa. Strain RS1, representing a putative novel species of Methylomicrobium , was cultured; and the draft genome sequence was obtained. Genome analysis indicated that RS1 represented a new putative Methylomicrobium species. Methylomicrobium has been detected globally in rice fields as a dominant genus, although no Methylomicrobium strains have been isolated from rice fields worldwide. Ours is one of the first extensive studies on cultured methanotrophs from Indian rice fields focusing on the tropical region, and a unique method was developed. Using the free air CO 2 enrichment (FACE) platform, an in-situ field experiment was conducted to explore the impacts of elevated CO 2 mole fraction ( x [CO 2 ]) on N 2 O emissions from strongly and weakly responsive rice cultivars. Under elevated x [CO 2 ], grain yield of the strongly responsive rice cultivars increased significantly, by more than 30%, whereas the weakly responsive cultivars showed a growth rate of 10%-15%. The four treatments comprised A-W (normal x [CO 2 ]+weakly responsive cultivar), F-W (elevated x [CO 2 ]+weakly responsive cultivar), A-S (normal x [CO 2 ]+strongly responsive cultivar), and F-S (elevated x [CO 2 ]+strongly responsive cultivar). Compared to the normal x [CO 2 ] treatments (A-S and A-W), when the strongly and weakly responsive cultivars were exposed to elevated x [CO 2 ](F-S and F-W), N 2 O emissions decreased by 52.54% ( P <0.05) and 38.40% ( P <0.05), rice yield increased by 22.96% ( P <0.05) and 12.11% ( P >0.05), and N 2 O emission intensity decreased by 61.68% ( P <0.05) and 45.13% ( P <0.05), respectively. Moreover, N 2 O emissions of all treatments were significantly positively correlated with NH 4 + -N content ( P <0.05), whereas not correlated with NO 2 O emissions of the strongly responsive cultivar in rice fields under elevated - -N content. Soil temperature is an important factor affecting the N 2 O emissions of the strongly responsive cultivar in rice fields under elevated x [CO 2 ] conditions. Through comprehensive consideration of climate conditions, in the future, priority should be given to planting the strongly responsive cultivar, ensuring high rice yield and significant reduction in N 2 O emissions.

Pesticide use is known to have a negative impact on the habitat use of birds. The decomposition of residual pesticides causes a drastic decrease in the biomass of wildlife food sources, indirectly affecting the ecosystem. In this study, we investigated the effects of pesticide use on the distributions of grey herons ( Ardea cinerea ) and great egrets ( Ardea alba ) in rice fields in the Republic of Korea. From early May to mid-June in 2015 and 2016, we recorded the abundance of these birds and their prey (loaches, other fish, tadpoles, and benthic invertebrates) and investigated their dependence on rice agricultural practices (eco-friendly vs conventional) and field types (harrowed, plowed, or transplanted). We found that both grey herons and great egrets preferentially used transplanted fields. Grey herons were observed more in conventional rice fields, while great egrets were observed more in eco-friendly rice fields. This may be driven by the distribution of their preferred prey types; we observed a higher density of tadpoles (the prey type favored by grey herons) in conventional fields and a higher density of loaches (the preferred prey of great egrets) in eco-friendly fields. Pesticides drive these patterns both directly and indirectly; pesticide use in conventional rice fields directly suppresses the abundance of loaches, which frees the tadpole population from predation pressures and indirectly boosts their abundance in conventional rice fields. Our findings suggest that the distributions of grey herons and great egrets vary depending on food availability and are directly and indirectly influenced by pesticide use.

Background: The sibling species of the malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae (sensu stricto) and Anopheles coluzzii co-exist in many parts of West Africa and are thought to have recently diverged through a process of ecological speciation with gene flow. Divergent larval ecological adaptations, resulting in Genotype-by-Environment (G × E) interactions, have been proposed as important drivers of speciation in these species. In West Africa, An. coluzzii tends to be associated with permanent man-made larval habitats such as irrigated rice fields, which are typically more eutrophic and mineral and ammonia-rich than the temporary rain pools exploited by An. gambiae (s.s.) METHODS: To highlight G × E interactions at the larval stage and their possible role in ecological speciation of these species, we first investigated the effect of exposure to ammonium hydroxide and water mineralisation on larval developmental success. Mosquito larvae were exposed to two water sources and increasing ammonia concentrations in small containers until adult emergence. In a second experiment, larval developmental success was compared across two contrasted microcosms to highlight G × E interactions under conditions such as those found in the natural environment., Results: The first experiment revealed significant G × E interactions in developmental success and phenotypic quality for both species in response to increasing ammonia concentrations and water mineralisation. The An. coluzzii strain outperformed the An. gambiae (s.s.) strain under limited conditions that were closer to more eutrophic habitats. The second experiment revealed divergent crisscrossing reaction norms in the developmental success of the sibling species in the two contrasted larval environments. As expected, An. coluzzii had higher emergence rates in the rice paddy environment with emerging adults of superior phenotypic quality compared to An. gambiae (s.s.), and vice versa, in the rain puddle environment., Conclusions: Evidence for such G × E interactions lends support to the hypothesis that divergent larval adaptations to the environmental conditions found in man-made habitats such as rice fields in An. coluzzii may have been an important driver of its ecological speciation.

Extensive wetland habitat loss across the continental United States has caused post-harvested rice fields to become an important surrogate wetland habitat for migratory waterfowl. Flooded rice fields used by waterfowl have the potential to provide agronomic benefits to soil. Increasing interest in the reciprocal relationship between birds and flooded rice fields has given rise to many studies that aim to quantify bird abundance. However, surveying large flocks of birds in open agricultural fields is challenging because traditional ground and aerial surveys can cause birds to flush or re-allocate spatially, thus biasing counts that are reflected in following management practice recommendations. To avoid this, we used camera surveys and an open-access image manipulation program to estimate 24-h bird use of rice fields. Indices of bird abundance from counts were used to estimate fecal matter input to rice fields. Successful refueling at staging sites is essential for the survival and reproduction of migratory birds. Understanding their staging ecology is therefore crucial for the conservation of migrant species. Rice fields in the mid-western region of the Korean Peninsula serve as staging habitats for the black-tailed godwit ( Limosa limosa ). We examined the behavior of staging black-tailed godwits in rice fields located in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway during their northward migration. Specifically, we tested the effect of flock size and water level on the foraging, vigilance, and resting behaviors of black-tailed godwits. Our observations revealed that as flock size increased, stepping rate, pecking rate, and vigilance duration decreased, while probing rate, preening duration, and foraging efficiency increased. Stepping and pecking rates increased at low water levels, compared with high water levels. We determined that the behavior of black-tailed godwits at the staging site is influenced by flock size and water level. These observations suggest that black-tailed godwits form larger flocks to increase foraging efficiency by lowering individual-level vigilance, and to spend more time on preening, which is critical for flight and survival. It can be also inferred, based on the shift in primary foraging mode between probing and pecking depending on the water level, that they obtain higher foraging efficiency by flexibly adapting their foraging mode to the conditions in rice fields that are subject to agricultural activities. Our results are expected to serve as basic data for establishing efficient management strategies for anthropogenic habitats for the conservation of migratory shorebirds such as black-tailed godwit.

Members of the genus Methylobacter (Mtb) have been identified to be the most dominant methanotrophs in aquatic as well as terrestrial habitats. Methylobacter shows four species with validly published names and these are grouped in two clades based on phylogenetic and genomic comparisons. Mtb luteus and Mtb marinus (synonym: Mtb whittenburyi) belong to clade 1 Methylobacter. Clade 2 Methylobacter comprises of two species: Mtb tundripaludum and Mtb psychrophilus (type strain, no longer available). We isolated a yellow pigmented, rod-shaped methanotroph, strain (KRF1), from a tropical rice field in India, which might represent a putative novel species within Methylobacter clade 2. The cells are long, thick and motile rods. The strain grows under variable oxygen concentration (5-80% air) and also in nitrogen free media (5-50% air). The morphological, chemotaxonomic and genomic features of KRF1 were investigated in details. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization values and average nucleotide identity (ANI) comparisons with the members of its closest species, Mtb tundripaludum, were in the range of 20-26% and ~ 73-81%, respectively. The fatty acid methyl esters profile of KRF1 was different from the profile of Mtb tundripaludum SV96 T . The major cell wall fatty acids of strain KRF1 are 16:1 ω7c/16:1 ω6c summed feature (55.4%) and 16:1 ω5c (28.6%). The draft genome of KRF1 is of 5.04 Mbp in size with a GC content of 49.3% and the whole genome shotgun sequencing project has the accession number RYFG00000000 (version: RYFG02000000). Due to the difficulties in the maintenance and cryopreservation of this culture, it could not be deposited in two international culture collections. We thereby propose KRF1 to be member of a Candidatus species, 'Candidatus Methylobacter oryzae' KRF1. The culture is maintained live in our laboratory and also in our institutional WDCM approved culture collection (MACS Collection of Microorganisms) as MCMB-1471.

Background: The wide distribution of malaria mosquito breeding sites within tropical environments limits the mosquito larval source management efforts to control malaria. Rice farming contributes substantially in supporting malaria mosquito productivity in tropical countries. To overcome this challenge, this study was carried out to determine the effect of applying a mixture of biolarvicide and fertilizer on mosquito larvae density in rice farms under semi-field conditions in Tanzania., Methods: A semi-field experiment was designed to determine the timing of application of a biolarvicide, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) and fertilizer (di-ammonium phosphate-DAP or urea) and assess their effect on mosquito larvae density and rice grain outputs. The experiment had five blocks (4 treatment arms and one control arm) and each had four replicates. Treatment arms had different intervals of days between treatments for mixtures of fertilizer and biolarvicides. The dosages used were 10 g of Bti/16 M 2 and 160 g of DAP/Urea/16 m 2 ., Results: In overall, the intervention blocks (with biolarvicide) had lowest mean mosquito larvae abundance compared to control block (F = 22.42, P < 0.001). Similarly, the control arm maintained highest density of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato larvae compared to interventions blocks (F = 21.6, P < 0.001). The best determined timing for application of Bti was in 7 and in 10 days (F = 3.753, P < 0.001). There was neither significant different in mean rice grain harvest per ten panicle (F = 1.453, P = 0.27) nor mean difference in rice grain harvest (F = 1.479, P = 0.26) per intervention arms., Conclusion: The findings of this study have shown that application of a mixture of Bti and fertilizer have impact on both mosquito larvae density and maintaining yield rice harvest. Thus, application of a combination of biolarvicide and fertilizer can be an alternative approach in malaria mosquito intervention among rice farming communities of rural Tanzania.

River deltas are ecologically and economically valuable coastal ecosystems but low elevations make them extremely sensitive to relative sea level rise (RSLR), i.e. the combined effects of sea level rise and subsidence. Most deltas are subjected to extensive human exploitation, which has altered the habitat composition, connectivity and geomorphology of deltaic landscapes. In the Ebro Delta, extensive wetland reclamation for rice cultivation over the last 150 years has resulted in the loss of 65% of the natural habitats. Here, we compare the dynamics of habitat shifts under two departure conditions (a simulated pristine delta vs. the human-altered delta) using the Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) under the 4.5 and 8.5 RCP (Representative Concentration Pathways) scenarios for evaluating their resilience to RSLR (i.e. resistance to inundation). Results showed lower inundation rates in the human delta (~10 to 22% by the end of the century, depending on RCP conditions), mostly due to ~4.5 times lower initial extension of coastal lagoons compared to the pristine delta. Yet, inundation rates from ~15 to 30% of the total surface represent the worst possible human scenario, assuming no flooding protection measures. Besides, accretion rates within rice fields are disregarded since this option is not available in SLAMM for developed dry land. In the human delta, rice fields were largely shifted to other wetland habitats and experienced the highest reductions, mostly because of their larger surface. In contrast, in the pristine delta most of the habitats showed significant decreases by 2100 (~2 to 32% of the surface). Coastal infrastructures (dykes or flood protection dunes) and reintroduction of riverine sediments through irrigation channels are proposed to minimize impacts of RSLR. In the worst RCP scenarios, promoting preservation of natural habitats by transforming unproductive rice fields into wetlands could be the most sustainable option., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. An elliptical to cucumber-shaped methanotroph with large cells was isolated from a rice rhizosphere in Western India. Strain Sn10-6 is one of the first methanotrophs to be isolated from Indian rice fields. Cells of Sn10-6 are Gram-negative, motile, large in size (3-6 µm × 1.5-2 µm) and contain intracellular cytoplasmic membrane stacks. Colonies of Sn10-6 and liquid cultures have a pale pink colour. Strain Sn10-6 was initially isolated under micro-oxic conditions but later adapted to grow under fully oxic conditions. The major fatty acids present were identified as C 16:1 ω6c, C 16:1 ω7c and C 16:0 and ubiquinone was found to be the major quinone. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain Sn10-6 displays high similarity to the genes of Methylovulum psychrotolerans Sph1 T (93.6%) followed by Methylosarcina fibrata AML-C10 T (93.5%) and about 90-93% similarity to the genes of known species of Type I methanotrophic genera from the family Methylococcaceae. The draft genome information indicated that the G + C content of strain Sn10-6 is 43.9 mol%. Phylogenetic trees using 16S rRNA gene and the particulate methane mono-oxygenase sequences unequivocally placed Sn10-6 close to the genus Methylovulum. Based on the 16S rRNA gene differences, morphological characters and draft genome information, strain Sn10-6 (=MCC 3492 =KCTC 15683) is described here as the type strain of a novel species within a new genus, 'Candidatus Methylocucumis oryzae'.

Neonicotinoids and fipronil are the most widely used insecticides in the world. Previous studies showed that these compounds have high toxicity to a wide taxonomic range of non-target invertebrates. In rice cultivation, they are frequently used for nursery-box treatment of rice seedlings. The use of fipronil and neonicotinoid imidacloprid is suspected to be the main cause of population declines of red dragonflies, in particular Sympetrum frequens, because they have high lethal toxicity to dragonfly nymphs and the timing of the insecticides' introduction in Japan (i.e., the late 1990s) overlapped with the sharp population declines. However, a causal link between application of these insecticides and population declines of the dragonflies remains unclear. Therefore, we estimated the amount of the insecticides applied for nursery-box treatment of rice seedlings and analyzed currently available information to evaluate the causality between fipronil and imidacloprid usage and population decline of S. frequens using Hill's causality criteria. Based on our scoring of Hill's nine criteria, the strongest lines of evidence were strength, plausibility, and coherence, whereas the weakest were temporality and biological gradient. We conclude that the use of these insecticides, particularly fipronil, was a major cause of the declines of S. frequens in Japan in the 1990s, with a high degree of certainty. The existing information and our analyses, however, do not allow us to exclude the possibility that some agronomic practices (e.g., midsummer drainage or crop rotation) that can severely limit the survival of aquatic nymphs also played a role in the dragonfly's decline.

Wireless channel propagation characteristics and models are important to ensure the communication quality of wireless sensor networks in agriculture. Wireless channel attenuation experiments were carried out at different node antenna heights (0.8 m, 1.2 m, 1.6 m, and 2.0 m) in the tillering, jointing, and grain filling stages of rice fields. We studied the path loss variation trends at different transmission distances and analyzed the differences between estimated values and measured values of path loss in a free space model and a two-ray model. Regression analysis of measured path loss values was used to establish a one-slope log-distance model and propose a modified two-slope log-distance model. The attenuation speed in wireless channel propagation in rice fields intensified with rice developmental stage and the transmission range had monotone increases with changes in antenna height. The relative error (RE) of estimation in the free space model and the two-ray model under four heights ranged from 6.48⁻15.49% and 2.09⁻13.51%, respectively, and these two models were inadequate for estimating wireless channel path loss in rice fields. The ranges of estimated RE for the one-slope and modified two-slope log-distance models during the three rice developmental stages were 2.40⁻2.25% and 1.89⁻1.31%, respectively. The one-slope and modified two-slope log-distance model had better applicability for modeling of wireless channels in rice fields. The estimated RE values for the modified two-slope log-distance model were all less than 2%, which improved the performance of the one-slope log-distance model. This validates that the modified two-slope log-distance model had better applicability in a rice field environment than the other models. These data provide a basis for modeling of sensor network channels and construction of wireless sensor networks in rice fields. Our results will aid in the design of effective rice field WSNs and increase the transmission quality in rice field sensor networks.

A key factor in the colonization probabilities of parasites is the host's characteristic habitat. Considering that rice fields are simple habitats compared with natural wetlands, we comparatively analyzed the composition of the cercariae communities in Biomphalaria snails in an agricultural and a nonagricultural habitat of Corrientes Province, Argentina. We collected 2998 Biomphalaria snails from November 2011 to May 2012: B. tenagophila, B. occidentalis, B. peregrina, and B. orbignyi in the nonagricultural habitat and B. straminea in the agricultural habitat. Nine cercaria species were found in the nonagricultural habitat and 12 in the agricultural habitat, with overall parasite prevalence of 9.27 and 7.69%, respectively. The overall prevalence and mean species richness of cercariae showed no significant differences between habitats. The cercariae communities of the 2 habitats showed low similarity (38%), sharing 4 species. The mean species diversity of cercariae was higher in the nonagricultural habitat. Our results suggest that rice fields provide conditions for the hosts and cercariae that are somewhat similar to those of nonagricultural wetlands, although the contrasting characteristics of habitats can influence the presence of different intermediate and definitive hosts and consequently impact parasite diversity.

Rice fields represent a valuable surrogate habitat for many wetland species, playing an important role for biodiversity conservation in human-managed landscapes. Despite the fact that several taxonomic groups have been thoroughly investigated in this agroecosystem, little is known about the orthopteran fauna which lives in and around rice paddies, especially in Europe. In this paper, we provide a first description of the orthopteran assemblages hosted in the rice agroecosystems of northern Italy, trying to evaluate their conservation value through an analysis of species ecological traits (habitat specificity and dispersal capacity). During field samplings in summer 2016, we detected 25 orthopteran species. The 24% of the community was composed by habitat specialist species and the 56% of the sampled taxa was characterised by high dispersal capacities. Rice fields are an extremely dynamic ecosystem, characterised by the continuous succession of flooding and drying periods and conditioned by many other farming activities. Consequently, the orthopteran fauna in rice crops is mainly composed of species well adapted to sudden environmental changes. On the other hand, rice fields represent a particular biotope, providing a suitable habitat especially for hygrophilous species, which are otherwise restricted to scattered marsh areas. In order to preserve orthopteran diversity in rice agroecosystems, sustainable farming practices should be applied, especially by preserving and restoring marginal semi-natural habitats, by reducing grass management intensity on paddy banks and by discouraging rice cultivation in dry soils.

Incorporation of straw together with microbial inoculant (a microorganism agent, accelerating straw decomposition) is being increasingly adopted in rice cultivation, thus its effect on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions merits serious attention. A 3-year field experiment was conducted from 2010 to 2012 to investigate combined effect of straw and microbial inoculant on methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) in a rice field in Jurong, Jiangsu Province, China. The experiment was designed to have treatment NPK (N, P and K fertilizers only), treatment NPKS (NPK plus wheat straw), treatment NPKSR (NPKS plus Ruilaite microbial inoculant) and treatment NPKSJ (NPKS plus Jinkuizi microbial inoculant). Results show that compared to NPK, NPKS increased seasonal CH4 emission by 280-1370%, while decreasing N2O emission by 7-13%. When compared with NPKS, NPKSR and NPKSJ increased seasonal CH4 emission by 7-13% and 6-12%, respectively, whereas reduced N2O emission by 10-27% and 9-24%, respectively. The higher CH4 emission could be attributed to the higher soil CH4 production potential triggered by the combined application of straw and microbial inoculant, and the lower N2O emission to the decreased inorganic N content. As a whole, the benefit of lower N2O emission was completely offset by increased CH4 emission, resulting in a higher GWP for NPKSR (5-12%) and NPKSJ (5-11%) relative to NPKS. Due to NPKSR and NPKSJ increased rice grain yield by 3-6% and 2-4% compared to NPKS, the GHGI values for NPKS, NPKSR and NPKSJ were comparable. These findings suggest that incorporating straw together with microbial inoculant would not influence the radiative forcing of rice production in the terms of per unit of rice grain yield relative to the incorporation of straw alone., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Background: In Vietnam, paddy rice fields have been identified as a major non-point source of pesticide pollution of surface- and groundwater which is often directly used for domestic purposes. One strategy to assess the risk of pesticide pollution is to use process-based models. Here, we present a new model developed for simulating short-term pesticide dynamics in combined paddy rice field-fish pond farming systems. The model was calibrated using the Gauss-Marquardt-Levenberg algorithm and validated against measured pesticide concentrations of a paddy field-fish pond system typical for northern Vietnam., Results: In the calibration period, model efficiencies were 0.82 for dimethoate and 0.87 for fenitrothion. In the validation period, modelling efficiencies slightly decreased to 0.42 and 0.76 for dimethoate and fenitrothion, respectively. Scenario simulations revealed that a field closure period of 1 day after pesticide application considerably reduces the risk of pond and surface water pollution., Conclusion: These results indicate that the proposed model is an effective tool to assess and evaluate management strategies, such as extended field closure periods, aiming to reduce the loss of pesticides from paddy fields., (© 2013 Society of Chemical Industry.)

An entomological investigation was carried out in an agricultural area, mainly rice fields, of the Po river plain, located in the municipalities of Lacchiarella (MI) and Giussago (PV) (Lombardy, Italy). In 2009 and 2010, ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were sampled along rice field banks and in restored habitats, by means of pitfall traps. The area appeared as species-rich, compared to other anthropogenic habitats in the Po river pain. Most of the collected Carabids were species with a wide distribution in the Paleartic region, eurytopic and common in European agroecosystems. The assemblages were dominated by small-medium, macropterous species, with summer larvae. No endemic species were found. Species with southern distribution, rarely found north of the Po river, were also sampled. Amaralittorea is recorded for the first time in Italy.

Background: A few elements of soil are radioactive. Soil can transfer radionuclide into plants feeding human. Sometimes their levels are as high as to be concern of human healthy. Rice has an important share for Iranian foods especially in north of Iran. Therefore we decided to obtain radionuclides concentration emitting γ rays in Lahijan City (Northern Iran) rice fields using γ spectroscopy., Methods: Twenty eight samples from rice field's soils and 12 samples from superficial soils were collected at a square of 10*10 m2 to get 2kg weight. To make dry samples were put into oven at 105°C for 24h. Then they were milled and 950 gr of each sample was transferred to Marinelli container with 1000(cc) volume, sealed and left for 40 days to get secular equilibrium. After measuring Ph, Electric conductivity and organic carbon, γ spectroscopy was done to get sample gamma spectrum at 2000-6000 sec using HpGe detector., Results: It was found (226)Ra activity in rice fields of 29.273±0.72 Bqkg-1 and city soil of 31.02±1.1 Bqkg-1 and also 232Th activity of 37.47±1.12 Bqkg-1 for rice fields' soils and 40.47±1.68 Bqkg-1 for city soil were in standard mode., Conclusion: (40)K activities mean value according to UNSCEAR; 2000 was found a little greater than standard. A little value of (137)Cs was found in Lahijan rice fields and city soils that could be as a result of Chernobyl accident. In except of 137Cs, for three other under studied city soil elements, activities were greater than that of rice fields.
