Several techniques have been proposed for bone regeneration in patients with atrophic ridges. Nowadays, GBR represents the gold standard, and it allows obtaining sufficient bone volumes for a correct implant-prosthetic rehabilitation. Our goal is to perform a systematic review of the literature on the use of titanium meshes in GBR in order to evaluate the reliability of the procedure, the regeneration obtained, and the failures. Furthermore, we will evaluate the success and survival rate of the inserted implants. The selected articles concern vertical and/or horizontal regeneration of the alveolar ridge using titanium grids, in association or not with biomaterials, before and simultaneously with implant placement. Six articles were selected for the present review, including a total of 139 patients, 156 sites, and 303 implants. Titanium grids in combination with autogenous bone were used in 2 cases, 5 in combination with a mixture of autogenous bone and bone substitutes. The overall survival and success rates of implants were 98.3% and 85.25%, respectively. In conclusion, our review shows how the use of titanium mesh represented a predictable method for the rehabilitation of complex atrophic sites.

In this paper we describe the procedure for the optical calibration of large size deformable mirrors, acting as wavefront correctors for adaptive optics systems. Adaptive optics compensate the disturbance due to the atmospheric turbulence to restore the telescope resolution. We will showcase in particular the activities performed for the Adaptive Secondary Mirror (ASM) of the Magellan Adaptive Optics system (MagAO), which is an instrument for the 6.5 m Magellan Clay Telescope, located at Las Campanas Observatory, in Chile. The MagAO ASM calibration is part of the MagAO-2K project, a major MagAO upgrade that started in 2016 with the goal of boosting adaptive optics (AO) correction at visible wavelengths to image exoplanets. For the first time, the optical quality of MagAO mirror is reported. We describe the procedures developed to achieve high SNR interferometric measurements of the ASM modes under the presence of dome convection noise and telescope vibrations. These measurements were required to produce an improved control matrix with up to 500 modes to close the AO loop on sky with enhanced performances. An updated slaving algorithm was developed to improve the control of actuators vignetted by the central obscuration. The calibrations yielded also a new ASM flattening command, updating the one in use since the MagAO commissioning in 2013. With the new flattening command, a 22 nm RMS surface error was achieved. Finally, we present on-sky results showing the MagAO performance achieved with the new calibrations.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the long term results of ribbond retainer after orthodontic treatment. One hundred and thirty patients who were orthodontically treated satisfied the inclusion criteria of having received a semipermanent retention were treated with FRC lingual retainers (Ribbond (®)). It was performed a follow up evaluation after 2 years average from the retainer application and any complication or failure was recorded. Data from 119 remaining patients that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed and no instances of loosening were observed. It may be concluded that orthodontic canine-to-canine FRC retainers provide aneffective means of retaining realigned anterior teeth for at least two years.

Objective: This randomized clinical study examined the use of hyaluronic acid to treat infrabony periodontal defects over a period of 24 months., Method and Materials: Forty subjects with a two-wall infrabony defect (probing depth [PD] >= 7 mm; clinical attachment level [CAL] >= 7 mm) were selected. The defects were randomly divided into two groups: sites treated with hyaluronic acid (test group) and those treated with open flap debridement (control group)., Results: The 12- and 24-month evaluations were based on clinical and radiographic parameters. The primary outcome variable was CAL. Test defects shows a mean CAL gain of 1.9 ± 1.8 mm, while the control defects yielded a significantly lower gain of 1.1 ± 0.7 mm. PD reduction was also significantly higher in the test group (1.6 ± 1.2 mm) than in the control group (0.8 ± 0.5 mm). Frequency distribution analysis of the study outcomes indicated that hyaluronic acid increased the predictability of clinically significant results (CAL gains >= 2 mm and PD reduction >= 2 mm) in the test group compared with the controls., Conclusions: The treatment of infrabony defects with hyaluronic acid offered an additional benefit in terms of CAL gain, PD reduction, and predictability compared to treatment with open flap debridement.

The tooth structure preservation is the best way to postpone more invasive therapies. Especially in young patients more conservative techniques should be applied. Bonded porcelain veneers and even more the direct composite restorations, are the two therapeutic procedures that require the fewer sacrifice of dental tissue, finalized to the optimal recovery of aesthetic and functional outcome.Although the two techniques require different methods and materials, is possible to achieve a correct integration of both the methods by some technical and procedural measures. In the presented case is planned a rehabilitation of the four upper incisors by ceramic veneers and direct composite restorations.Care is taken for the surface treatment of ceramic restorations, with the objective of achieving integration, not only between natural teeth and restorations, but also between the different materials in use.The purpose of this article is to show how a proper design of the treatment plan leads to obtain predictable results with both direct and indirect techniques.

Little is known about specific IL-23 alterations associated with breast cancer and the data available are still controversial. Therefore, the evaluation of changes in serum IL-23 levels may add further information on the role of this cytokine in breast cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate prospectively the prognostic importance of circulating IL-23 in patients with untreated breast cancer, respect to healthy controls, and the association with clinico-pathological variables. The study involved 50 women diagnosed with stages I-IV breast cancer and 38 healthy controls. Of the 50 breast cancer patients, 37 women were recruited prior to their initial adjuvant chemotherapy and 13 prior to receive first line chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Adjuvant chemotherapy patients were at least in their 4th week post-surgery. IL-23 serum concentrations were measured by a quantitative enzyme immunoassay technique. We found a statistically significant higher systemic cytokine value in women with cancer in comparison with the control group (14.52±11.39 pg/ml vs. 6.35±4.63 pg/ml, P<0.0001). Patients with shorter overall survival presented higher IL-23 values, suggesting a negative prognostic correlation. There was no significant differences in IL-23 levels among patients according to the biomolecular characteristics, the different subtypes and the presence of metastatic disease. This work investigated, for the first time, the role of IL-23 in breast cancer patients showing a significant increase respect the control group. However, further validations are needed in larger studies to better investigate the implications of IL-23 increase in these patients., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Objective: The extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar may result in periodontal complications on the distal surface of the adjacent second molar. The purpose of this study was to compare the influence of three full-thickness flaps on the periodontal healing of the adjacent second molar after extraction of impacted mandibular third molars., Method and Materials: Forty-five volunteers with bilateral impaction of the mandibular third molars were selected. Each patient was randomly assigned to one of three groups: group A (envelope flap modified by Thibauld and Parant), group B (Laskin triangular flap), and group C (envelope flap modified by Laskin). The periodontal health of the second molars was evaluated at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery via clinical measurements., Results: After 21 days, there was no correlation between postoperative complications (such as edema and alveolitis) and flap design. However, there was a statistically significant reduction of pocket probing depth (PPD) and increase of clinical attachment level (CAL) in group B compared to the other groups (P<.05) 24 months after surgery., Conclusion: The effect of the type of flap used for mandibular third molar surgery on the periodontal status of the second molars as well as the factors that influence this outcome remains uncertain. Regardless of the flap design, the periodontal conditions of the adjacent second molar deteriorated after 12 and 24 months. A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma occurring in the gingival tissue on the site of the mandibular right canine is reported. The histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features are discussed and compared with the recent literature on malignant fibrous histiocytomas.
