Solar interfacial evaporation technology has the advantages of environmentally conscious and sustainable benefits. Recent research on light absorption, water transportation, and thermal management has improved the evaporation performance of solar interfacial evaporators. However, many studies on photothermal materials and structures only aim to improve performance, neglecting explanations for heat and mass transfer coupling or providing evidence for performance enhancement. Numerical simulation can simulate the diffusion paths and heat and water transfer processes to understand the thermal and mass transfer mechanism, thereby better achieving the design of efficient solar interfacial evaporators. Therefore, this review summarizes the latest exciting findings and tremendous advances in numerical simulation for solar interfacial evaporation. First, it presents a macroscopic summary of the application of simulation in temperature distribution, salt concentration distribution, and vapor flux distribution during evaporation. Second, the utilization of simulation in the microscopic is summed up, specifically focusing on the movement of water molecules and the mechanisms of light responses during evaporation. Finally, all simulation methods have the goal of validating the physical processes in solar interfacial evaporation. The oxygen discharge process significantly affects the electrochemical performance of a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), which requires an optimal structure of the flow field implemented in the bipolar plate (BP) component. In this study, we numerically investigated the two-phase (liquid water and oxygen) flow in the PEMWE's channel region with different outlet manifold structures utilizing the volume of fluid (VOF) model. Then, the oxygen volume fraction at the liquid/gas diffusion layer (L/GDL) surface, i.e., the interface of the channel and L/GDL, obtained by the liquid water and oxygen flow model was incorporated into a three-dimensional (3D) PEMWE model, which made it possible to predict the influence of the outlet manifold structure on the multiple transfers inside the whole electrolyzer as well as the electrochemical performance. The results indicate that the existence of oxygen in the flow field significantly decreased the electrolyzer voltage at a fixed operation current density and deteriorated the uniform distribution of the oxygen amount, current density (corresponding to the electrochemical reaction rate) and temperature in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), indicating that the rapid oxygen removal from the flow field is preferred in the operation of the electrolyzer. Moreover, slight increases in the width of the outlet manifold were helpful in relieving the oxygen accumulation in the anode CL and, hence, improved the electrolyzer performance with more uniform distribution characteristics.

Traditional dual-ion lithium salts have been widely used in solid polymer lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). Nevertheless, concentration polarization caused by uncontrolled migration of free anions has severely caused the growth of lithium dendrites. Although single-ion conductor polymers (SICP) have been developed to reduce concentration polarization, the poor ionic conductivity caused by low carrier concentration limits their application. Herein, a dual-salt quasi-solid polymer electrolyte (QSPE), containing the SICP network as a salt and traditional dual-ion lithium salt, is designed for retarding the movement of free anions and simultaneously providing sufficient effective carriers to alleviate concentration polarization. The dual salt network of this designed QSPE is prepared through in-situ crosslinking copolymerization of SICP monomer, regular ionic conductor, crosslinker with the presence of the dual-ion lithium salt, delivering a high lithium-ion transference number (0.75) and satisfactory ionic conductivity (1.16 × 10 -3  S cm -1 at 30 °C). Comprehensive characterizations combined with theoretical calculation demonstrate that polyanions from SICP exerts a potential repulsive effect on the transport of free anions to reduce concentration polarization inhibiting lithium dendrites. As a consequence, the Li||LiFePO 4 cell achieves a long-cycle stability for 2000 cycles and a 90% capacity retention at 30 °C. Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the main criterion for arrhythmia detection. As a means of identification, ECG leakage seems to be a common occurrence due to the development of the Internet of Medical Things. The advent of the quantum era makes it difficult for classical blockchain technology to provide security for ECG data storage. Therefore, from the perspective of safety and practicality, this article proposes a quantum arrhythmia detection system called QADS, which achieves secure storage and sharing of ECG data based on quantum blockchain technology. Furthermore, a quantum neural network is used in QADS to recognize abnormal ECG data, which contributes to further cardiovascular disease diagnosis. Each quantum block stores the hash of the current and previous block to construct a quantum block network. The new quantum blockchain algorithm introduces a controlled quantum walk hash function and a quantum authentication protocol to guarantee legitimacy and security while creating new blocks. In addition, this article constructs a hybrid quantum convolutional neural network called HQCNN to extract the temporal features of ECG to detect abnormal heartbeats. The simulation experimental results show that HQCNN achieves an average training and testing accuracy of 94.7% and 93.6%. And the detection stability is much higher than classical CNN with the same structure. HQCNN also has certain robustness under the perturbation of quantum noise. Besides, this article demonstrates through mathematical analysis that the proposed quantum blockchain algorithm has strong security and can effectively resist various quantum attacks, such as external attacks, Entanglement-Measure attack and Interception-Measurement-Repeat attack.

Introduction: Silicon is a major trace element in humans and a prospective supporting biomaterial to bone regeneration. Submicron silicon pillars, as a representative surface topography of silicon-based biomaterials, can regulate macrophage and osteoblastic cell responses. However, the design of submicron silicon pillars for promoting bone regeneration still needs to be optimized. In this study, we proposed a submicron forest-like (Fore) silicon surface (Fore) based on photoetching. The smooth (Smo) silicon surface and photoetched regular (Regu) silicon pillar surface were used for comparison in the bone regeneration evaluation. Methods: Surface parameters were investigated using a field emission scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, and contact angle instrument. The regulatory effect of macrophage polarization and succedent osteogenesis was studied using Raw264.7, MC3T3-E1, and rBMSCs. Finally, a mouse calvarial defect model was used for evaluating the promoting effect of bone regeneration on the three surfaces. Results: The results showed that the Fore surface can increase the expression of M2-polarized markers (CD163 and CD206) and decrease the expression of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Fore surface can promote the osteogenesis in MC3T3-E1 cells and osteoblastic differentiation of rBMSCs. Furthermore, the volume fraction of new bone and the thickness of trabeculae on the Fore surface were significantly increased, and the expression of RANKL was downregulated. In summary, the upregulation of macrophage M2 polarization on the Fore surface contributed to enhanced osteogenesis in vitro and accelerated bone regeneration in vivo . Three-dimensional printing is a revolutionary strategy to fabricate dental implants. Especially, 3D-printed dental implants modified with nanoscaled titanium oxide layer (H-SLM) have impressively shown quick osseointegration, but the accurate mechanism remains elusive. Herein, we unmask a domino effect that the hydrophilic surface of the H-SLM facilitates blood wetting, enhances the blood shear rate, promotes blood clotting, and changes clot features for quick osseointegration. Combining computational fluid dynamic simulation and biological verification, we find a blood shear rate during blood wetting of the hydrophilic H-SLM 1.2-fold higher than that of the raw 3D-printed implant, which activates blood clot formation. Blood clots formed on the hydrophilic H-SLM demonstrate anti-inflammatory and pro-osteogenesis effects, leading to a 1.5-fold higher bone-to-implant contact and a 1.8-fold higher mechanical anchorage at the early stage of osseointegration. This mechanism deepens current knowledge between osseointegration speed and implant surface characteristics, which is instructive in surface nanoscaled modification of multiple 3D-printed intrabony implants.

To address the scarcity and class imbalance of abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) databases, which are crucial in AI-driven diagnostic tools for potential cardiovascular disease detection, this study proposes a novel quantum conditional generative adversarial algorithm (QCGAN-ECG) for generating abnormal ECG signals. The QCGAN-ECG constructs a quantum generator based on patch method. In this method, each sub-generator generates distinct features of abnormal heartbeats in different segments. This patch-based generative algorithm conserves quantum resources and makes QCGAN-ECG practical for near-term quantum devices. Additionally, QCGAN-ECG introduces quantum registers as control conditions. It encodes information about the types and probability distributions of abnormal heartbeats into quantum registers, rendering the entire generative process controllable. Simulation experiments on Pennylane demonstrated that the QCGAN-ECG could generate completely abnormal heartbeats with an average accuracy of 88.8%. Moreover, the QCGAN-ECG can accurately fit the probability distribution of various abnormal ECG data. In the anti-noise experiments, the QCGAN-ECG showcased outstanding robustness across various levels of quantum noise interference. These results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential applicability of the QCGAN-ECG for generating abnormal ECG signals, which will further promote the development of AI-driven cardiac disease diagnosis systems. Smart healthcare aims to revolutionize med-ical services by integrating artificial intelligence (AI). The limitations of classical machine learning include privacy concerns that prevent direct data sharing among medical institutions, untimely updates, and long training times. To address these issues, this study proposes a digital twin-assisted quantum federated learning algorithm (DTQFL). By leveraging the 5G mobile network, digital twins (DT) of patients can be created instantly using data from various Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices and simultane-ously reduce communication time in federated learning (FL) at the same time. DTQFL generates DT for patients with specific diseases, allowing for synchronous training and updating of the variational quantum neural network (VQNN) without disrupting the VQNN in the real world. This study utilized DTQFL to train its own personalized VQNN for each hospital, considering privacy security and training speed. Simultaneously, the personalized VQNN of each hospital was obtained through further local iterations of the final global parameters. The results indicate that DTQFL can train a good VQNN without collecting local data while achieving accuracy comparable to that of data-centralized algorithms. In addition, after personalized train-ing, the VQNN can achieve higher accuracy than that with-out personalized training.

Hydrothermal processes are considered a promising strategy for the conversion of ever-growing plastic wastes. Plasma-assisted peroxymonosulfate-hydrothermal process has attracted increasing attention in enhancing the efficiency of hydrothermal conversion. However, the role of solvent in this process is unclear and rarely researched. Herein, the conversion process with different water-based solvents was investigated based on a plasma-assisted peroxymonosulfate-hydrothermal reaction. As the ratio of the solvent effective volume in the reactor increased from 20% to 53.3%, the conversion efficiency displayed an obvious decrease from 7.1% to 4.2%. The results indicated that the increased pressure caused by the solvent greatly reduced the surface reaction and forced the hydrophilic groups to shift back to the carbon chain, thereby reducing the reaction kinetics. A further increase in the solvent effective volume ratio could promote the conversion in the inner layer of the plastics to achieve an increase of the conversion efficiency. Next-generation ultrahigh power density proton exchange membrane fuel cells rely not only on high-performance membrane electrode assembly (MEA) but also on an optimal cell structure. To this end, this work comprehensively investigates the cell performance under various structures, and it is revealed that there is unexploited performance improvement in structure design because its positive effect enhancing gas supply is often inhibited by worse proton/electron conduction. Utilizing fine channel/rib or the porous flow field is feasible to eliminate the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and hence increase the power density significantly due to the decrease of cell thickness and gas/electron transfer resistances. The cell structure combining fine channel/rib, GDL elimination and double-cell structure is believed to increase the power density from 4.4 to 6.52 kW L -1 with the existing MEA, showing nearly equal importance with the new MEA development in achieving the target of 9.0 kW L -1 ., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Porous flow fields distribute fuel and oxygen for the electrochemical reactions of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells through their pore network instead of conventional flow channels. This type of flow fields has showed great promises in enhancing reactant supply, heat removal, and electrical conduction, reducing the concentration performance loss and improving operational stability for fuel cells. This review presents the research and development progress of porous flow fields with insights for next-generation PEM fuel cells of high power density (e.g., ∼9.0 kW L -1 ). Materials, fabrication methods, fundamentals, and fuel cell performance associated with porous flow fields are discussed in depth. Major challenges are described and explained, along with several future directions, including separated gas/liquid flow configurations, integrated porous structure, full morphology modeling, data-driven methods, and artificial intelligence-assisted design/optimization.

Nanoparticles (NPs) are confronted with limited and disappointing delivery efficiency in tumors clinically. The tumor extracellular matrix (ECM), whose physical traits have recently been recognized as new hallmarks of cancer, forms a main steric obstacle for NP diffusion, yet the role of tumor ECM physical traits in NP diffusion remains largely unexplored. Here, we characterized the physical properties of clinical gastric tumor samples and observed limited distribution of NPs in decellularized tumor tissues. We also performed molecular dynamics simulations and in vitro hydrogel experiments through single-particle tracking to investigate the diffusion mechanism of NPs and understand the influence of tumor ECM physical properties on NP diffusion both individually and collectively. Furthermore, we developed an estimation matrix model with evaluation scores of NP diffusion efficiency through comprehensive analyses of the data. Thus, beyond finding that loose and soft ECM with aligned structure contribute to efficient diffusion, we now have a systemic model to predict NP diffusion efficiency based on ECM physical traits and provide critical guidance for personalized tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Precise prediction of the hindered diffusion behavior of electroneutral particles in fibrous media plays a critical role in the development of drugs, polymer membranes, and porous electrodes. However, the random microstructure and unknown coupling relationship of multiple resistance mechanisms lead to the lack of a universal prediction model. In this work, a dual-resistance model is proposed by reconstructed pore-scale simulations, which presents the coexistence of steric and hydrodynamic resistances in the multiplication form. The simulation results show that the relationship between steric resistance and structural parameters (porosity, fiber radius, and particle radius) is exponential, while that for hydrodynamic resistance is polynomial. The dominant diffusion resistance is found to change from hydrodynamic to steric resistance with a decrease in porosity. The fluorescent polystyrene microsphere diffusivity in a series of SiO 2 fibrous media is determined by single-particle tracking experiments, quantitatively confirming the dual-resistance model. The present model can be used for rapid diffusivity prediction and fibrous membrane and drug design.

Osmotic energy conversion features directional ion migration in selective nanochannels, dominated by interfacial effects, temperature, and concentration. Current efforts emphasize membrane modification for superior reliability and durability, whereas the origin and implication of interfacial effects are unclear. This work performs ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for hydrated ion-graphene oxide interfaces by regulating the temperature and concentration. The interfacial effects associated with their induced anisotropic ion diffusion and ion selectivity are revealed. The scientific essence of the interfacial effects is an electron transfer triggered by hydrated ion-functional group interactions. The interfacial effects are clarified to include dynamic solvation structures, interfacial H-bonds, and chemical reactions. Ions possess incomplete hydration shells, and their arrangements vary from ordered to disordered to overlapped. Interfacial H-bonds restrict hydrated ions by constraining water molecules, whereas continuous reactions provide lateral pathways to generate anisotropy. Cation selectivity is further clarified by negative surface charges from hydroxyl deprotonation. Besides, temperature rise induces disordered hydrated ions as well as frequent and violent reactions, enhancing ion diffusion, selectivity, and anisotropy; excessive concentrations produce overlapped hydrated ions, more H-bonds, and inferior reactions, weakening ion diffusion, selectivity, and anisotropy. Finally, the bottom-up concept for osmotic energy conversion is summarized, and elevated temperature combined with low concentration is found to boost ion diffusion and ion selectivity synergistically. This work provides an in-depth understanding of interfacial phenomena and ion behaviors in nanochannels.

Emerging metamaterials have served as an efficient strategy for the realization of unconventional heat control and management using structural thermal properties, and many functional thermal metadevices have been investigated. However, thermal functions are usually fixed or limited in the switching range. Thus far, real-time thermal regulation is elusive for thermal metamaterials because of deterministic artificial metastructures and uncontrollable phase transitions, coupled with the absence of dynamic adaptability. Here, a self-adaptive metasurface platform to implement programmable thermal functions via the automatic evolution of thermoelectric heat sources and real-time control of the driven voltage is reported. The proof-of-concept smart platform experimentally demonstrates arbitrary switching between elaborate thermal patterns consolidated into an active thermoelectric element matrix. Further, thermal pixels and feedback control systems are integrated into printed circuit boards, resulting in self-adaptability to any thermal requirements. With the development of the Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technologies, massive biometric data are collected by different organizations. These data have great significance but also worsen the privacy risks. Electro-CardioGram (ECG)-based Identity Recognition (EIR) is a popular Biometric technology. An ECG record is an internal Biology feature of a person and has time continuity. Thus, compared with traditional Biometric methods like face recognition, EIR may be less vulnerable to attack. We propose an Autoencoder-based EIR system, called Personalized AutoEncoder (PerAE). PerAE maintains a small autoencoder model (called Attention-MemAE) for each registered user of a system. The Attention-MemAE enhances the autoencoder by using a memory module and two attention mechanisms. A user's Attention-MemAE classifies the hearbeats of other users as anomalies. An Attention-MemAE can be updated when the distribution of the user's ECG data is changed. By using personalized autoencoder, PerAE can improve the time efficiency and reduce the memory overhead. It improves the adaptability, scalability, and maintainability of EIR systems. Experiment results show that to train an Attention-MemAE with 90 % identification accuracy for a user, we can just take five minutes to collect the user's ECG data (around 500 heartbeat samples).

Ultra-conductive heat transport showcases significant potentials in popular thermal managements with convection, phase change, and heat source. However, it is captivated impossible for passive thermal manipulation, usually bounded by intrinsic thermal conductivities of natural materials, to outperform these active recipes in need of extra energy payload. Here, a robust recipe to create passive ultra-conductive thermal metamaterials consisting of nothing but bulk natural materials is reported. Thanks to the local thermal resistance regulation by vertical thermal transport channel, the proof-of-concept thermal metamaterials experimentally demonstrate extreme effective conductivity (1915 W m -1  K -1 ) solely with naturally occurring materials. The purely conductive modulation without any external energy is comparable to active counterparts, and further reveals its robustness and unexpected convenience. The performance and durability of proton exchange fuel cells (PEMFCs) are greatly affected by the bipolar plate (BP). In this paper, the thermal and electrical conductivities and mechanical property of graphite filled with resin composite BPs were collectively enhanced through the effectively coupled manipulations of molding pressure and impregnation pressure. The microstructures show that the resin tends to distribute at the top region of the rib under high impregnation pressure. The thermal and electrical conductivities of the pure expanded graphite BP is well reserved in the composite BPs under high molding pressure, which can facilitate the heat transfer and electron conduction in the PEMFCs. The relative density and compressive strength of composite BPs were greatly enhanced by the impregnation of resin compared to the expanded graphite under high molding pressure without the impregnation of resin (HU-BP). The maximum thermal conductivity, compressive strength, and minimum interfacial contact resistance (ICR) are collectively achieved in the HL-BP. The enhanced thermal-electrical and mechanical properties could be mainly attributed to the well-reserved continuous networks of graphite in the composite BPs. The findings in this paper are expected to synergetically improve the thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of composite BPs through coupled manipulations of the molding and impregnation pressures, which in turn enhances the power density and durability of PEMFCs.

Gas transport mechanisms can be categorized into viscous flow and mass diffusion, both of which may coexist in a porous media with multiscale pore sizes. To determine the dominant transport mechanism and its contribution to gas transport capacity, the gas viscous flow and mass diffusion processes are analyzed in single nanoscale pores via a theoretical method, and are simulated in 3D nanoporous media via pore-scale lattice Boltzmann methods. The apparent permeability from the viscous flow and apparent diffusivity from the mass diffusion are estimated. A dimensionless parameter, i.e., the diffusion-flow ratio, is proposed to evaluate the dominant transport mechanism, which is a function of the apparent permeability, apparent diffusivity, bulk dynamic viscosity, and working pressure. The results show that the apparent permeability increases by approximately two orders of magnitude when the average Knudsen number ( Kn avg ) of the nanoporous media or Knudsen number ( Kn ) of single nanoscale pores increases from 0.1 to 10. Under the same conditions, the increment in the apparent diffusivity is only approximately one order of magnitude. When Kn  < 0.01, the apparent permeability has a lower bound (i.e., absolute permeability). When Kn  > 10, the apparent diffusivity has an upper bound (i.e., Knudsen diffusivity). The dominant transport mechanism in single nanoscale pores is the viscous flow for 0.01 <  Kn <  100, where the maximum diffusion-flow ratio is less than one. In nanoporous media, the dominant transport relies heavily on Kn avg and the structural parameters. For nanoporous media with the pore throat diameter of 3 nm, Kn avg  = 0.2 is the critical point, above which the mass diffusion is dominant; otherwise, the viscous flow is dominant. Thermal management of H 2 gas storage in a tank is crucial for determining the H 2 gas deliverable capacity. In this study, a strategy for the design of an excellent comprehensive performance fuel storage tank from the screening of microscopic materials to the design of macroscopic particle adsorption tank performance is proposed. The best metal-organic framework (MOF) for H 2 deliverable capacity in a computation-ready experimental MOF database is first screened using a grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. An upscale model that combines the finite volume method with GCMC is then established to investigate the H 2 charging and discharging processes in a screened best MOF-filled adsorption particle tank that is integrated with a phase-change material (PCM) jacket. The process of the heat and mass transfer in the screened best MOF particle adsorption tank with and without the PCM jacket-inserted metal foam is studied. The results show that the prescreened XAWVUN has the highest gravimetric and considerable volumetric deliverable capacity among 503 MOFs, which can reach up to 23.1 mol·kg -1 and 20.8 kg·m -3 at 298 K and pressures between 35 000 kPa (adsorption pressure) and 160 kPa (desorption pressure), respectively. The H 2 deliverable capacity can be maximized by 3.2 and 12.1% for PCM jackets inserted with metal foam in the H 2 charging and discharging processes when it is compared with the case without the PCM jacket, respectively. The above study will facilitate the development of new equipment for hydrogen storage.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the main subtype of non-small cell lung cancer with a poor survival prognosis. In our study, gene expression, DNA methylation, and clinicopathological data of primary LUAD were utilized to identify potential prognostic markers for LUAD, which were recruited from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Univariate regression analysis showed that there were 21 methylation-associated DEGs related to overall survival (OS), including 9 down- and 12 up-regulated genes. The 12 up-regulated genes with hypomethylation may be risky genes, whereas the other 9 down-regulated genes with hypermethylation might be protective genes. By using the Step-wise multivariate Cox analysis, a methylation-associated 6-gene (consisting of CCL20, F2, GNPNAT1, NT5E, B3GALT2, and VSIG2) prognostic signature was constructed and the risk score based on this gene signature classified patients into high- or low-risk groups. Patients of the high-risk group had shorter OS than those of the low-risk group in both the training and validation cohort. Multivariate Cox analysis and the stratified analysis revealed that the risk score was an independent prognostic factor for LUAD patients. The methylation-associated gene signature may serve as a prognostic factor for LUAD patients and the represent hypermethylated or hypomethylated genes might be potential targets for LUAD therapy.

Introduction: With the aggravation of population aging, the incidence of intertrochanteric fracture also increases dramatically. Patients are often elderly accompany with severe osteoporosis and various complications. Therefore, we should select an individualized treatment based on the each patient's state. Arthroplasty is recommended for unstable fractures with obvious osteoporosis, ipsilateral femoral head necrosis or arthritis. Rigid fixation of the greater trochanter with arthroplasty is challenging because of the powerful pulling forces created by multiple muscles being transmitted to the greater trochanter. Currently, there are few contemporary literatures on the evaluation of unstable intertrochanteric fracture with efficient fixation of the greater trochanter. Moreover, there is no consensus to choose which implant to immobilize the greater trochanter. The purpose of this study was to review previous literatures and provide a valuable guidance., Conclusions: The locking plate, which not only provides rigid fixation but also results in lower rate of postoperative complications. When nanoparticles (NPs) enter into the biological system, a wide range of proteins will coat on their surfaces forming protein corona, which changes the initial synthetic characteristics of NPs to the biological identity, resulting in the loss of their targets or specially designed properties. Although pre-coating with proteins would reduce the protein corona formation, they may diminish the targeting moieties in the transport process. Patchy NPs can offer unique advantages of asymmetry, heterogeneity, and multi-functions. This has inspired us to use the asymmetry to realize the versatility of NPs, to accommodate stealth and targeting functions. In this study, we performed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the adsorption mechanism between patchy NPs and human serum albumin, and the interaction mechanism between NP-HSA and the membrane. The results show that there is a high probability for HSA to interact with the hydrophobic, or charged brushes of patchy NPs. The adsorption sites, as calculated through the contact probability between NPs and the residues, depend on the NP surface properties. Furthermore, the HSA adsorption on NPs could improve the NP-membrane interaction. The simulation results provide deep understanding of the NP interaction mechanism, which would help the NP design for their biomedical applications.

Minimizing platinum (Pt) loading while reserving high reaction efficiency in the catalyst layer (CL) has been confirmed as one of the key issues in improving the performance and application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). To enhance the reaction efficiency of Pt catalyst in CL, the interfacial interactions in the three-phase interface, i.e., carbon, Pt, and ionomer should be first clarified. In this study, a molecular model containing carbon, Pt, and ionomer compositions is built and the radial distribution functions (RDFs), diffusion coefficient, water cluster morphology, and thermal conductivity are investigated after the equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) and nonequilibrium MD simulations. The results indicate that increasing water content improves water aggregation and cluster interconnection, both of which benefit the transport of oxygen and proton in the CL. The growing amount of ionomer promotes proton transport but generates additional resistance to oxygen. Both the increase of water and ionomer improve the thermal conductivity of the C. The above-mentioned findings are expected to help design catalyst layers with optimized Pt content and enhanced reaction efficiency, and further improve the performance of PEMFCs.

The traditional sound absorption problem has not been completely resolved over the last 200 years. At every stage, its research has changed depending on practical requirements and current technologies. Phononic crystals (PCs) and acoustic metamaterials (AMs) have gained attention because of their extensive investigation and development over the past 30 years. Especially, the use of these materials brings new vitality into the traditional sound absorption problem to figure out broad working band and low-frequency absorption. This review highlights recent progress in sound absorption-from airborne to waterborne absorption-and gradient-index AMs. Progress in gradient-index AMs is singled out because of their favorable impedance matching, good viscous and thermal dissipation, and lengthened propagation paths compared with those of other materials. The progress in sound absorption of PCs and AMs is promising to serve as the next-generation sound absorbing materials, trap and reuse acoustic energy, and attenuate earthquake/tsunami wave in the future., (Copyright © 2020 The Author(s). The use of ornamental plant will increase with the improvement in living standards in green and blue-green infrastructure of urban settings. Nicotiana alata is an ornamental plant, frequently grown as a model plant for horticulture, medicine, and scientific research studies throughout the world. Despite its popularity, little is known about the response of N. alata against heavy metals (HMs). This work is based on the hydroponic study to identify the impacts of selected HMs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb) on N. alata, at 0, 50 and 100 μM concentration, with the co-application of EDTA, at 0 and 2.5 mM in hydroponics system. The HMs uptake was found to be dose dependent, with significant higher uptake at 100 μM of respective HM. Highest cumulative uptake (mg kg -1 of HMs in root, shoot, and leaf dried weight) noted were 767.50 ± 50.83, 862.30 ± 23.83, 271.29 ± 18.68, 1117.49 ± 46.10 and 2166.81 ± 102.09, for Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb at 100 μM, respectively. It was identified that EDTA co-application with HMs resulted in boosted HMs uptake, with cumulative uptake percentage increment of 41.62, 54.67, 53.98, 34.48 and 19.92% for 100 μM of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb, respectively. Higher uptake led to negative impact on plant physiology, photosynthetic pigments, and higher lipid peroxidation, H 2 O 2 contents, and electrolyte leakage that increased the stress. Higher HMs uptake induced higher antioxidant enzymatic response. Lateral flow assays (LFAs) are promising candidates in biomedical diagnosis fields due to their rapid, low-cost, and portable features. However, improving their sensitivity remains challenging due to the unclear roles of capture probes with different distribution formats on the particle transfer and capturing in the test line. Therefore, we designed experiments and observed an asymmetrical U-shaped distribution of control probes throughout the NC membrane thickness. Based on this outcome, a two-dimensional mathematical model based on the Langmuir surface reaction kinetics was developed to investigate the effect of capture probe distributions on LFA performance. A two-dimensional model was qualitatively validated by comparing with the experimental results and the simulations of the reported one-dimensional model. Then, a higher detection signal was achieved by using the U-shaped distribution of capture probes throughout the NC membrane thickness instead of a uniform distribution. Furthermore, when the NC membrane thickness was less than 110 μm, the ratio of the detection signal in the visible region to the signal in the total section at the test line was above 13%. A thin NC membrane will produce a strong detection signal in the visible region at the test line. The developed model is capable of providing direct predictions in designing highly sensitive LFAs.

Water slip at solid surfaces is important for a wide range of micro-/nanofluidic applications. While it is known that water slip behavior depends on surface functionalization, how it impacts the molecular level dynamics and mass transport at the interface is still not thoroughly understood. In this paper, we use nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the slip behavior of water confined between gold surfaces functionalized by self-assembled monolayer (SAM) molecules with different polar functional groups. We observe a positive-to-negative slip transition from hydrophobic to hydrophilic SAM functionalizations, which is found to be related to the stronger interfacial interaction between water molecules and more hydrophilic SAM molecules. The stronger interaction increases the surface friction and local viscosity, making water slip more difficult. More hydrophilic functionalization also slows down the interfacial water relaxation and leads to more pronounced water trapping inside the SAM layer, both of which impede water slip. The results from this work will provide useful insights into the understanding of the water slip at functionalized surfaces and design guidelines for various applications.

Nucleic acid lateral flow assays (NALFAs) have attracted much attention due to their rapid, robust, simple, and cost-effective features. However, the current NALFAs are still limited by low sensitivity because of the poor understanding and control of the underlying complex flow and reaction processes. Although enormous efforts have been devoted to enhancing detection sensitivity of NALFAs, developing simple NALFAs with high sensitivity remains difficult. Thus, we proposed a novel physical-chemical coupling method using dissoluble saline barriers and developed the corresponding mathematical model to better understand the underlying processes to enhance the NALFA sensitivity. Through optimizing the design parameters (e.g., saline barriers patterns, volume, and concentrations) experimentally and numerically, we achieved the highest 10-fold sensitivity enhancement for detection of nucleic acids (including HBV, Staphylococcus aureus, and salmonella as model targets) using this method. The physical-chemical coupling method offers a facile strategy for developing highly sensitive NALFAs.

Microfluidic fluorescence-activated cell sorters (μFACS) have attracted considerable interest because of their ability to identify and separate cells in inexpensive and biosafe ways. Here a high-performance μFACS is presented by integrating a standing surface acoustic wave (SSAW)-based, 3D cell-focusing unit, an in-plane fluorescent detection unit, and an SSAW-based cell-deflection unit on a single chip. Without using sheath flow or precise flow rate control, the SSAW-based cell-focusing technique can focus cells into a single file at a designated position. The tight focusing of cells enables an in-plane-integrated optical detection system to accurately distinguish individual cells of interest. In the acoustic-based cell-deflection unit, a focused interdigital transducer design is utilized to deflect cells from the focused stream within a minimized area, resulting in a high-throughput sorting ability. Each unit is experimentally characterized, respectively, and the integrated SSAW-based FACS is used to sort mammalian cells (HeLa) at different throughputs. A sorting purity of greater than 90% is achieved at a throughput of 2500 events s -1 . Lateral flow assays (LFAs) have attracted considerable attention in biomedical diagnostics. However, it's still challenging to achieve a high detection sensitivity and extensive working range, mainly because the underlying mechanism of complex reaction processes in LFAs remains unclear. Many mathematical models have been developed to analyze the complex reaction processes, which are only qualitative with limited guidance for LFA design. Now, a semi-quantitative convection-diffusion-reaction model is developed by considering the kinetics of renaturation of nucleic acids and the model is validated by our experiments. We established a method to convert the LFA design parameters between the simulation and experiment (i.e., inlet reporter particle concentration, initial capture probe concentration, and association rate constant), with which we achieved a semi-quantitative comparison of the detection limit and working range between simulations and experiments. Based on our model, we have improved the detection sensitivity and working range by using high concentrations of the inlet reporter particles and initial capture probe. Besides, we also found that target nucleic acid sequences with a high association rate constant are beneficial to improve the LFA performance. The developed model can predict the detection limit and working range and would be helpful to optimize the design of LFAs.

Paper-based microfluidic biosensors have recently attracted increasing attentions in point-of-care testing (POCT) territories benefiting from their affordable, accessible and eco-friendly features, where technologies for fabricating such biosensors are preferred to be equipment free, easy-to-operate and capable of rapid prototyping. In this work, we developed a pen-on-paper (PoP) strategy based on two custom-made pens, i.e., a wax pen and a conductive-ink pen, to fully write paper-based microfluidic biosensors through directly writing both microfluidic channels and electrodes. Particularly, the proposed wax pen is competent to realize one-step fabrication of wax channels on paper, as the melted wax penetrates into paper during writing process without any post-treatments. The practical applications of the fabricated paper-based microfluidic biosensors are demonstrated by both colorimetric detection of Salmonella typhimurium DNA with detection limit of 1nM and electrochemical measurement of glucose with detection limit of 1mM. The developed PoP strategy for making microfluidic biosensors on paper characterized by true simplicity, prominent portability and excellent capability for rapid prototyping shows promising prospect in POCT applications., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Network coding is an effective means to enhance the communication efficiency. The characterization of network solvability is one of the most important topic in this field. However, for general network, the solvability conditions are still a challenge. In this paper, we consider the solvability of general quantum k-pair network in measurement-based framework. For the first time, a detailed account of measurement-based quantum network coding(MB-QNC) is specified systematically. Differing from existing coding schemes, single qubit measurements on a pre-shared graph state are the only allowed coding operations. Since no control operations are concluded, it makes MB-QNC schemes more feasible. Further, the sufficient conditions formulating by eigenvalue equations and stabilizer matrix are presented, which build an unambiguous relation among the solvability and the general network. And this result can also analyze the feasibility of sharing k EPR pairs task in large-scale networks. Finally, in the presence of noise, we analyze the advantage of MB-QNC in contrast to gate-based way. By an instance network [Formula: see text], we show that MB-QNC allows higher error thresholds. Specially, for X error, the error threshold is about 30% higher than 10% in gate-based way. In addition, the specific expressions of fidelity subject to some constraint conditions are given.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a serious public health problem, which can be transmitted through various routes (e.g., blood donation) and cause hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hence, it is necessary to do diagnostic screening for high-risk HBV patients in these transmission routes. Nowadays, protein-based technologies have been used for HBV testing, which however involve the issues of large sample volume, antibody instability and poor specificity. Nucleic acid hybridization-based lateral flow assay (LFA) holds great potential to address these limitations due to its low-cost, rapid, and simple features, but the poor analytical sensitivity of LFA restricts its application. In this study, we developed a low-cost, simple and easy-to-use method to improve analytical sensitivity by integrating sponge shunt into LFA to decrease the fluid flow rate. The thickness, length and hydrophobicity of the sponge shunt were sequentially optimized, and achieved 10-fold signal enhancement in nucleic acid testing of HBV as compared to the unmodified LFA. The enhancement was further confirmed by using HBV clinical samples, where we achieved the detection limit of 10 3 copies/ml as compared to 10 4 copies/ml in unmodified LFA. The improved LFA holds great potential for diseases diagnostics, food safety control and environment monitoring at point-of-care.

Nucleic acid testing (NAT) has been widely used for disease diagnosis, food safety control and environmental monitoring. At present, NAT mainly involves nucleic acid extraction, amplification and detection steps that heavily rely on large equipment and skilled workers, making the test expensive, time-consuming, and thus less suitable for point-of-care (POC) applications. With advances in paper-based microfluidic technologies, various integrated paper-based devices have recently been developed for NAT, which however require off-chip reagent storage, complex operation steps and equipment-dependent nucleic acid amplification, restricting their use for POC testing. To overcome these challenges, we demonstrate a fully disposable and integrated paper-based sample-in-answer-out device for NAT by integrating nucleic acid extraction, helicase-dependent isothermal amplification and lateral flow assay detection into one paper device. This simple device allows on-chip dried reagent storage and equipment-free nucleic acid amplification with simple operation steps, which could be performed by untrained users in remote settings. The proposed device consists of a sponge-based reservoir and a paper-based valve for nucleic acid extraction, an integrated battery, a PTC ultrathin heater, temperature control switch and on-chip dried enzyme mix storage for isothermal amplification, and a lateral flow test strip for naked-eye detection. It can sensitively detect Salmonella typhimurium, as a model target, with a detection limit of as low as 10 2 CFU ml -1 in wastewater and egg, and 10 3 CFU ml -1 in milk and juice in about an hour. This fully disposable and integrated paper-based device has great potential for future POC applications in resource-limited settings.

This is a retrospective analysis of the clinical effects of transplant of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC‑MSCs) for the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). The biological characteristics of hUC-MSCs were assessed using flow cytometry. Nine eligible patients were enrolled in the study as they adhered to the Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) classification of stage Ⅱ‑Ⅲa, and hUC‑MSCs were grafted by intra‑arterial infusion. Organize effective perfusion was assessed using the oxygen delivery index (ODI). The results showed that the ODI was increased at three days post‑operation. The MRI results revealed that at 12 and 24 months after treatment, the necrotic volume of the femoral heads was significantly reduced. No obvious abnormalities were observed. Taken together, these data indicate that intra‑arterially infused hUC‑MSCs migrate into the necrotic field of femoral heads and differentiate into osteoblasts, thus improving the necrosis of femoral heads. This finding suggested that intra‑arterial infusion of hUC‑MSCs MSCs is a feasible and relatively safe method for the treatment of femoral head necrosis.

In nucleic acid testing (NAT), gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-based lateral flow assays (LFAs) have received significant attention due to their cost-effectiveness, rapidity, and the ability to produce a simple colorimetric readout. However, the poor sensitivity of AuNP-based LFAs limits its widespread applications. Even though various efforts have been made to improve the assay sensitivity, most methods are inappropriate for integration into LFA for sample-to-answer NAT at the point-of-care (POC), usually due to the complicated fabrication processes or incompatible chemicals used. To address this, we propose a novel strategy of integrating a simple fluidic control strategy into LFA. The strategy involves incorporating a piece of paper-based shunt and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) barrier to the strip to achieve optimum fluidic delays for LFA signal enhancement, resulting in 10-fold signal enhancement over unmodified LFA. The phenomena of fluidic delay were also evaluated by mathematical simulation, through which we found the movement of fluid throughout the shunt and the tortuosity effects in the presence of PDMS barrier, which significantly affect the detection sensitivity. To demonstrate the potential of integrating this strategy into a LFA with sample-in-answer-out capability, we further applied this strategy into our prototype sample-to-answer LFA to sensitively detect the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in clinical blood samples. The proposed strategy offers great potential for highly sensitive detection of various targets for wide application in the near future.

Understanding the underlying mechanism of nanomedicine-biomembrane interactions is important for the design and optimization of payload delivery systems. This study investigates the interactions between polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer-paclitaxel conjugates and biomembranes using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We found that acidic conditions (e.g., pH ∼ 5) and membrane asymmetry can improve the conjugate penetration. Paclitaxel (PTX) distributions on a G4 PAMAM dendrimer can affect interactions via the penetration mechanism, although they have no significant effect on interactions via the adsorption mechanism. The random distribution of PTX can enhance the ability of PTX molecules to pass through asymmetric membranes. Furthermore, the penetration process becomes more difficult with increasing paclitaxel loading ratios. These results provide molecular insights into the precise translocation mechanism of dendrimer-drug conjugates and thus provide suggestions for drug design and delivery.

Understanding interactions between cell-penetrating peptides and biomembrane under tension can help improve drug delivery and elucidate mechanisms underlying fundamental cellular events. As far as the effect of membrane tension on translocation, it is generally thought that tension should disorder the membrane structure and weaken its strength, thereby facilitating penetration. However, our coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation results showed that membrane tension can restrain polyarginine translocation across the asymmetric membrane and that this effect increases with increasing membrane tension. We also analyzed the structural properties and lipid topology of the tensed membrane to explain the phenomena. Simulation results provide important molecular information on the potential translocation mechanism of peptides across the asymmetric membrane under tension as well as new insights in drug and gene delivery.

We have previously grafted human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) with blood plasma to treat rat tibia nonunion. To further examine the biological characteristics of this process, we applied an established hUC-MSCs-treated rat nonunion model with the addition of an inhibitor of AKT. SD rats (80) were randomly divided into four groups: a fracture group (positive control); a nonunion group (negative control); a hUC-MSCs grafting with blood plasma group; and a hUC-MSCs grafting with blood plasma & AKT blocker group. The animals were sacrificed under deep anesthesia at 4 and 8 weeks post fracture for analysis. The fracture line became less defined at 4 weeks and disappeared at 8 weeks postoperatively in both the hUC-MSCs grafting with blood plasma and grafting with blood plasma & the AKT blocker, which is similar to the fracture group. Histological immunofluorescence studies showed that the numbers of hUC-MSCs in the calluses were significantly higher in the hUC-MSCs grafting with blood plasma than those in group with the AKT blocker. More bone morphogenetic protein 2 and bone sialoprotein expression and less osteoprotegerin and bone gla protein expression were observed in the AKT blocker group compared to the hUC-MSCs grafting with blood plasma. AKT gene expression in the AKT blocker group was decreased 50% compared to the hUC-MSCs with plasma group and decreased 70% compared to the fracture group, while the elastic modulus was decreased. In summary, our work demonstrates that AKT may play a role in modulating osteogenesis induced by hUC-MSCs.

During the deep reactive ion etching process, the sidewalls of a silicon mold feature rough wavy structures, which can be transferred onto a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannel through the soft lithography technique. In this article, we utilized the wavy structures of PDMS microchannel sidewalls to initiate and cavitate bubbles in the presence of acoustic waves. Through bubble cavitation, this acoustofluidic approach demonstrates fast, effective mixing in microfluidics. We characterized its performance by using viscous fluids such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). When two PEG solutions with a resultant viscosity 54.9 times higher than that of water were used, the mixing efficiency was found to be 0.92, indicating excellent, homogeneous mixing. The acoustofluidic micromixer presented here has the advantages of simple fabrication, easy integration, and capability to mix high-viscosity fluids (Reynolds number: ~0.01) in less than 100 ms.

Extensive studies have shown that titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanomaterials (NMs) can cause toxicity in vitro and in vivo under normal conditions. However, an adverse effect induced by nano-TiO2 in many diseased conditions, typically characterized by oxidative stress (OS), remains unknown. We investigated the toxicity of nano-TiO2 in rat liver cells (BRL-3A) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat livers under OS conditions, which were generated using hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) in vitro and alloxan in vivo, respectively. In vitro results showed that cell death ratios after nano-TiO2 exposure were significantly enhanced (up to 2.62-fold) in BRL-3A cells under OS conditions, compared with normal controls. Significant interactions between OS conditions and nano-TiO2 resulted in the rapid G0/G1 to S phase transition and G2/M arrest, which were opposite to G0/G1 phase arrest in cells after NMs exposure only. In vivo results showed that obvious pathological changes in rat livers and the increased activities of four enzymes (i.e. aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase) owing to liver damage after nano-TiO2 exposure under OS conditions, compared with their healthy controls. In addition, compared with increased hepatotoxicity after nano-TiO2 exposure, micro-TiO2 showed no adverse effects to cells and rat livers under OS conditions. Our results suggested that OS conditions synergistically increase nano-TiO2 induced toxicity in vitro and in vivo, indicating that the evaluation of nanotoxicity under OS conditions is essentially needed prior to various applications of NMs in foods, cosmetics and potential treatment of diseases., (Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Studying dendrimer-biomembrane interactions is important for understanding drug and gene delivery. In this study, coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the behaviors of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers (G4 and G5) as they interacted with asymmetric membranes from different sides of the bilayer, thus mimicking different dendrimer transport stages. The G4 dendrimer could insert into the membrane during an equilibrated state, and the G5 dendrimer could induce pore formation in the membrane when the dendrimers interacted with the outer side (outer interactions) of an asymmetric membrane [with 10% dipalmitoyl phosphatidylserine (DPPS) in the inner leaflet of the membrane]. During the interaction with the inner side of the asymmetric membrane (inner interactions), the G4 and G5 dendrimers only adsorbed onto the membrane. As the membrane asymmetry increased (e.g., increased DPPS percentage in the inner leaflet of the membrane), the G4 and G5 dendrimers penetrated deeper into the membrane during the outer interactions and the G4 and G5 dendrimers were adsorbed more tightly onto the membrane for the inner interactions. When the DPPS content reached 50%, the G4 dendrimer could completely penetrate through the membrane from the outer side to the inner side. Our study provides molecular understanding and reference information about different dendrimer transport stages during drug and gene delivery.

We evaluated the biological characteristics/effect of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) grafting with blood plasma on bone regeneration in rat tibia nonunion. SD rats (142) were randomly divided into four groups: fracture group (positive control); nonunion group (negative control); hUC-MSCs grafting with blood plasma group; and hUC-MSCs grafting with saline group. Rats were administered tetracycline (30 mg/kg) and calcein blue (5 mg/kg) 8 days before killing. The animals were killed under deep anesthesia at 4 and 8 weeks post fracture for radiological evaluation and histological/immunohistological studies. The hUC-MSCs grafting with blood plasma group was similar to fracture group: the fracture line blurred in 4 weeks and disappeared in 8 weeks postoperatively. Histological/immunohistological studies showed that hUC-MSCs were of low immunogenicity which merged in rat bone tissue, differentiated into osteogenic lineages, and completed the healing of nonunion. After stem cell transplantation, regardless of whether plasma or saline was used, new multi-center bone formation was observed; fracture site density was better in stem cell grafting with blood plasma group. We, therefore, concluded that the biological characteristics of hUC-MSCs-treated nonunion were different from the standard fracture healing process, and the proliferative and localization capacity of hUC-MSCs might benefit from the use of blood plasma.

Objective: To investigate the clinical effect of MSCs transplantation derived from human umbilical cord on bone nonunion., Methods: From December 2005 to December 2007, 72 patients with traumatic bone nonunion were treated. Auto-iliac bone transplantation was used in 36 patients (group A), including 27 males and 9 females, aging (34.0 +/- 2.1) years; including 18 cases of femoral fracture and 18 cases of tibia fracture; and the time of bone nonunion being (9.1 +/- 1.7) months. Percutaneous MSCs transplantation derived from human umbilical cord was used in 36 patients (group B), including 28 males and 8 females, aging (36.0 +/- 1.6) years; including 18 cases of femoral fracture and 18 cases of tibia fracture; and the time of bone nonunion being (6.4 +/- 1.9) months. There were no statistically significant differences in general data between two groups (P > 0.05). In group A, the site of bone nonunion was filled with relevant auto-iliac bone. In group B, the mixture of 6-8 mL platelet-rich plasma prepared by centrifugalizing venous blood and 1 x (10(6)-10(7)) P5 MSCs extracted from human umbilical cord denoted by volunteers was injected into the region of bone nonunion with 0.2 g demineralized bone powder., Results: Incision healed by first intention in group A. No puncture, deep infection, rejection and general fever reaction occurred in group B. All patients in two groups were followed up for (13.2 +/- 4.6) months. No loosening and breakage of internal fixation were observed in two groups. The motility and function of hip, knee and ankle were good. The time of bone union was (10.3 +/- 2.8) months in group A and (5.6 +/- 0.8) months in groups B, showing significant difference between two groups (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The percutaneous MSCs transplantation derived from human umbilical cord is more effective on bone nonunion than the traditional treatment, it is easily-to-operate, safe, reliable, and rapid for union. It is one of effective methods in treating bone nonunion.
