Developing advanced electrolytes with high Li affinity is crucial for achieving long-cycling lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, the strong Li+-solvent interactions in conventional electrolytes often induce difficult Li+ desolvation especially under low-temperature conditions, resulting in the formation of fragile electrode interfaces involving solvents, and thus dissatisfactory cycling stability of LMBs. Herein, by introducing various diluents into the lithium hexafluorophosphate in 1, 2-dimethoxyethane electrolyte, we reveal that Li+ desolvation is influenced by not only the diluent-solvent interaction but also the diluent-anion interaction. Based on these findings, a diluent selection parameter (DSP), which is calculated based on the product of interaction energies of diluent-solvent/diluent-Li+ and diluent-anion/diluent-Li+, is proposed for diluent selection. A diluent with a larger DSP is more favorable for promoting Li+ desolvation and improving the low-temperature performance of LMBs. With the rationally selected 1, 2-dichloroethane diluent (DSP=3.95), Li||Cu cell enables high Li reversibility (98.5% after 300 cycles). Li||LiFePO4 cell barely loses capacity at -20 °C for 300 cycles. The Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cell with the anode-to-cathode capacity ratio of 2.7 retains 87% capacity retention after 100 cycles. The utilization of thin zinc (Zn) anodes with a high depth of discharge is an effective strategy to increase the energy density of aqueous Zn metal batteries (ZMBs), but challenged by the poor reversibility of Zn electrode due to the serious Zn-consuming side reactions at the Zn||electrolyte interface. Here, we introduce 2-bromomethyl-1,3-dioxolane (BDOL) and methanol (MeOH) as electrolyte additive into aqueous ZnSO 4 electrolyte. In the as-formulated electrolyte, BDOL with a strong electron-withdrawing group (-CH 2 Br) tends to pair with the H 2 O-Zn-MeOH complex, leading to the formation of organobromine-partnered H 2 O-Zn-MeOH cluster ions. During the Zn electrodeposition process, the formed ZnO-dominated by-products induce the polymerization of BDOL monomers, which are previously adsorbed on the electrode. As a result, a uniform dual-layer SEI with ZnO-dominated outer layer and polyether-dominated inner layer is built on the surface of Zn electrode. With such an in situ formed dual-layer SEI, the Zn||Mg 0.9 Mn 3 O 7  ⋅ 2.7H 2 O pouch cell using a 10-um Zn anode (corresponding to a low negative to positive areal capacity ratio of 3.56) successfully operated for 300 cycles with a high capacity retention of 86 %, promising a high practical energy density of >120 Wh/kg (based on the total mass of Zn and Mg 0.9 Mn 3 O 7  ⋅ 2.7H 2 O)., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) presents an opportunity to replace elemental sulfur as a "shuttle-free" cathode for secondary Li-S batteries, which can be an ideal choice for stationary energy storage due to its abundance, low cost, and sustainability. The electrolyte options for the state-of-the-art SPAN batteries have been limited to the flammable carbonate and ether ones, which raises safety concerns. Here, we explored the use of a non-flammable acetonitrile (AN) electrolyte for SPAN battery for the first time and identified the irreversible cleavage of C-S bonds of SPAN as the main reason for the failure of SPAN in AN electrolyte. Fortunately, by introducing 10 wt % fluoroethylene carbonate into the AN electrolyte, the bond cleavage in SPAN is suppressed and a stable cathode electrolyte interface is formed, both contributing to stabilizing the structure of SPAN during electrochemical process. Consequently, we achieved a stable cycling for 900 cycles in Li||SPAN cells. Moreover, by pairing with a pre-lithiated graphite (pGr) anode, the newly formulated electrolyte enables extended cycle life for 1500 cycles with a capacity retention of 91 % and superb safety in pGr||SPAN full cell. Featured with the highest possible energy density, anode-free lithium-metal batteries (AFBs) are still challenged by the fast capacity decay, especially for the ones operated in commercial carbonate electrolytes, which can be ascribed to the poor stability and continual broken/formation of the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) formed on the anode side. Here, sacrificial additives, which have low solubility in carbonate electrolytes and can be continuously released, are proposed for AFBs. The sacrificial and continuously-releasing feature gifts the additives the capability to form and heal the SEI during the long-term cycling process, thus minimizing the loss of active Li and enabling the AFLMBs with high loading LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (21.7 mg cm -2 ) cathode a high capacity-retention of 68.9% after 50 cycles in commercial carbonate electrolyte, in contrast to the control cell failed after 30 cycles. Diazirines are versatile carbene precursors that are extensively used in biological target identification experiments. However, their photo-activation wavelength ( ca. 365 nm) precludes their use in living organisms. Here we show that a reconceptualization of the diazirine hybridization state leads to conjugation of the diazirine motif to longer-wavelength chromophores. In a model diazirine-fluorene conjugate, we are able to achieve direct activation (and subsequent C-H insertion) with >450 nm light for the first time. The sustainable development of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries calls for efficient recycling technologies for spent LFP (SLFP). Even for the advanced direct material regeneration (DMR) method, multiple steps including separation, regeneration, and electrode refabrication processes are still needed. To circumvent these intricacies, new regeneration methods that allow direct electrode reuse (DER) by rejuvenating SLFP electrodes without damaging its structure are desired. Here, a 0.1 M lithium triethyl borohydride/tetrahydrofuran solution, which has the proper reductive capability to reduce Fe 3+ in SLFP to Fe 2+ without alloying with the aluminum current collector, is selected as the lithiation/regeneration reagent to restock the Li loss and regenerate SLFP electrodes. By soaking the SLFP electrodes in the lithiation solution, we successfully rejuvenated the crystal structure and electrochemical activity of SLFP electrodes with structural integrity within only 6 minutes at room temperature. When being directly reused, the regenerated LFP electrodes deliver a high specific capacity of 162.6 mAh g -1 even after being exposed to air for 3 months. The DER strategy presents significant economic and environmental benefits compared with the DMR method. Scholars usually unconsciously employ the Tapio decoupling model with a static perspective and results-oriented philosophy, which often leads to errors. Therefore, we propose an improved Tapio decoupling model that adopts a dynamic perspective and process-oriented philosophy. Taking China, the world's largest carbon emitter, as a case study, we investigate the decoupling of its provincial industrial carbon emissions (ICE) from industrial value-added (IVA) during 2005-2020 using both the conventional and improved decoupling model, followed by a comparative analysis of their results. Our findings are as follows: (1) Both China's ICE and IVA exhibited a general upward trend during the study period, with non-linear annual ICE and IVA variations observed across all provinces. (2) Overall, China's provincial IVA increasingly decoupled from ICE, with some provinces achieving a strong decoupling state during 2015-2020; however, from the long-term perspective spanning the entire study period, most provinces remained in a weak decoupling state. (3) The conventional decoupling model tends to yield overly optimistic results in empirical study of China, with the decoupling indices during the periods of 2005-2010 and 2005-2020 determined by the conventional model even had significant statistical difference between those determined by the improved model. (4) To ensure equity, differentiated carbon reduction policies should be tailored to each province, considering factors such as absolute carbon emissions, short-term decoupling states, and long-term decoupling states. 'Anode-free' Li metal batteries offer the highest possible energy density but face low Li coulombic efficiency when operated in carbonate electrolytes. Here we report a performance improvement of anode-free Li metal batteries using p-block tin octoate additive in the carbonate electrolyte. We show that the preferential adsorption of the octoate moiety on the Cu substrate induces the construction of a carbonate-less protective layer, which inhibits the side reactions and contributes to the uniform Li plating. In the mean time, the reduction of Sn 2+ at the initial charging process builds a stable lithophilic layer of Cu 6 Sn 5 alloy and Sn, improving the affinity between the Li and the Cu substrate. Notably, anode-free Li metal pouch cells with tin octoate additive demonstrate good cycling stability with a high coulombic efficiency of ~99.1%. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection as a potential development strategy for hydrogen peroxide and dopamine sensors has received extensive attentions. Herein, BiOI/ZnIn 2 S 4 -X (X = n (BiOI)/n(ZnIn 2 S 4 )) heterojunction was synthesized using various molar ratios via a two-step method. A series of characterization techniques were employed to analyze the composition, surface structure, valence state, and optical properties of BiOI/ZnIn 2 S 4 -X. The results show that BiOI/ZnIn 2 S 4 -X perform significantly better than both BiOI and ZnIn 2 S 4 . Furthermore, BiOI/ZnIn 2 S 4 -9% exhibits superior visible light absorption capacity and photocurrent response among all of the BiOI/ZnIn 2 S 4 -X tested. Therefore, a PEC sensor was developed using BiOI/ZnIn 2 S 4 -9% for the detection of hydrogen peroxide and dopamine. The linear detection range for hydrogen peroxide spans from to 1 ~ 40,000 µM, with the LOD of 0.036 µM (S/N = 3). For dopamine, the corresponding values are 2 ~ 250 µM for the linear detection range, and 0.017 μM for the LOD, respectively. Logged and disturbed forests are often viewed as degraded and depauperate environments compared with primary forest. However, they are dynamic ecosystems 1 that provide refugia for large amounts of biodiversity 2,3 , so we cannot afford to underestimate their conservation value 4 . Here we present empirically defined thresholds for categorizing the conservation value of logged forests, using one of the most comprehensive assessments of taxon responses to habitat degradation in any tropical forest environment. We analysed the impact of logging intensity on the individual occurrence patterns of 1,681 taxa belonging to 86 taxonomic orders and 126 functional groups in Sabah, Malaysia. Our results demonstrate the existence of two conservation-relevant thresholds. First, lightly logged forests (<29% biomass removal) retain high conservation value and a largely intact functional composition, and are therefore likely to recover their pre-logging values if allowed to undergo natural regeneration. Second, the most extreme impacts occur in heavily degraded forests with more than two-thirds (>68%) of their biomass removed, and these are likely to require more expensive measures to recover their biodiversity value. Solid electrolyte interface (SEI) is arguably the most important concern in graphite anodes, which determines their achievable Coulombic efficiency (CE) and cycling stability. In spent graphite anodes, there are already-formed (yet loose and/or broken) SEIs and some residual active lithium, which, if can be inherited in the regenerated electrodes, are highly desired to compensate for the lithium loss due to SEI formation. However, current graphite regenerated approaches easily destroy the thin SEIs and residue active lithium, making their reuse impossible. Herein, this work reports a fast-heating strategy (e.g., 1900 K for ≈150 ms) to upcycle degraded graphite via instantly converting the loose original SEI layer (≈100 nm thick) to a compact and mostly inorganic one (≈10-30 nm thick with a 26X higher Young's Modulus) and still retaining the activity of residual lithium. Thanks to the robust SEI and enclosed active lithium, the regenerated graphite exhibited 104.7% initial CE for half-cell and gifted the full cells with LiFePO 4 significantly improved initial CE (98.8% versus 83.2%) and energy density (309.4 versus 281.4 Wh kg -1 ), as compared with commercial graphite. Using Li 2 S cathodes instead of S cathodes presents an opportunity to pair them with Li-free anodes (e.g., graphite), thereby circumventing anode-related issues, such as poor reversibility and safety, encountered in Li-S batteries. However, the moisture-sensitive nature of Li 2 S causes the release of hazardous H 2 S and the formation of insulative by-products, increasing the manufacturing difficulty and adversely affecting cathode performance. Here, Li 4 SnS 4 , a Li + conductor that is air-stable according to the hard-soft acid-base principle, is formed in situ and uniformly on Li 2 S particles because Li 2 S itself participates in Li 4 SnS 4 formation. When exposed to air (20% relative humidity), the protective Li 4 SnS 4 layer maintains its components and structure, thus contributing to the enhanced stability of the Li 2 S@Li 4 SnS 4 composite. In addition, the Li 4 SnS 4 layer can accelerate the sluggish conversion of Li 2 S because of its favorable interfacial charge transfer, and continuously confine lithium polysulfides owing to its integrity during electrochemical processes. A graphite-Li 2 S pouch cell containing a Li 2 S@Li 4 SnS 4 cathode is constructed, which shows stable cyclability with 97% capacity retention after 100 cycles. The cobalt-free layered oxide cathode of LiNi 0.65 Mn 0.35 O 2 is promising for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, under high-voltage conditions, severe side reactions between the Co-free cathode and electrolyte, as well as grain boundary cracks and pulverization of particles, hinder its practical applications. Herein, an electrolyte regulation strategy is proposed by adding fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and LiPO 2 F 2 as electrolyte additives in carbonate-based electrolytes to address the above issues. As a result, a homogeneous and dense organic-inorganic hybrid cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) film is formed on the cathode surface. The CEI film consists of C-F, LiF, Li 2 CO 3 , and Li x PO y F z species, which is proven to be highly conductive and effective in suppressing structure damage and alleviating the interfacial reactions between the cathode and electrolyte. With such a CEI film, the interfacial stability of the Co-free cathode and the high-voltage cycling performance of Li||LiNi 0.65 Mn 0.35 O 2 are greatly improved. A reversible capacity of 155.1 mAh g -1 and a capacity retention of 81.3% over 150 cycles are attained at a 4.8 V charge cutoff voltage with the tamed electrolyte, whereas the cell without the additives only retains 76.1% capacity retention. Therefore, our work demonstrates the synergistic effect of FEC and LiPO 2 F 2 in stabilizing the interface of Co-free cathode materials and provides an alternative strategy for the electrolyte design of high-voltage LIBs.

Trees structure the Earth's most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations 1-6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth's 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories 7 , we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world's most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees., (© 2024. The emergence of Plasmodium parasite resistance to current front-line antimalarial treatments poses a serious threat to global malaria control and highlights the necessity for the development of therapeutics with novel targets and mechanisms of action. Plasmepsins IX and X (PMIX/PMX) have been recognised as highly promising targets in Plasmodium due to their contribution to parasite's pathogenicity. Recent research has demonstrated that dual PMIX/PMX inhibition results in the impairment of multiple parasite's life cycle stages, which is an important feature in drug resistance prevention. Herein we report novel hydroxyethylamine photoaffinity labelling (PAL) probes, designed for PMIX/PMX target engagement and proteomics experiments in Plasmodium parasites. The prepared probes have both a photoreactive group (diazirine or benzophenone) for covalent attachment to target proteins, and a terminal alkyne handle allowing their use in bioorthogonal ligation. One of the synthesised benzophenone probes was shown to be highly promising as demonstrated by its outstanding antimalarial potency (IC 50 = 15 nM versus D10 P. falciparum ) and its inhibitory effect against Pf PMX in an enzymatic assay. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies show that the inclusion of the benzophenone and alkyne handle does not alter the binding mode compared to the parent compound. The photoaffinity probe can be used in future chemical proteomics studies to allow hydroxyethylamine drug scaffold target identification and validation in Plasmodium . Lithium (Li) metal electrodes show significantly different reversibility in the electrolytes with different salts. However, the understanding on how the salts impact on the Li loss remains unclear. Herein, using the electrolytes with different salts (e.g., lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ), lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB), and lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide (LiFSI)) as examples, we decouple the irreversible Li loss (SEI Li + and "dead" Li) during cycling. It is found that the accumulation of both SEI Li + and "dead" Li may be responsible to the irreversible Li loss for the Li metal in the electrolyte with LiPF 6 salt. While for the electrolytes with LiDFOB and LiFSI salts, the accumulation of "dead" Li predominates the Li loss. We also demonstrate that lithium nitrate and fluoroethylene carbonate additives could, respectively, function as the "dead" Li and SEI Li + inhibitors. Inspired by the above understandings, we propose a universal procedure for the electrolyte design of Li metal batteries (LMBs): (i) decouple and find the main reason for the irreversible Li loss; (ii) add the corresponding electrolyte additive. With such a Li-loss-targeted strategy, the Li reversibility was significantly enhanced in the electrolytes with 1,2-dimethoxyethane, triethyl phosphate, and tetrahydrofuran solvents. Rail corrugation is a common problem in metro lines, and its efficient recognition is always an issue worth studying. To recognize the wavelength and amplitude of rail corrugation, a particle probabilistic neural network (PPNN) algorithm is developed. The PPNN is incorporated with the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the probabilistic neural network. On the basis of the above, the in-vehicle noise characteristics measured in the field are used to recognize normal rail wavelengths of 30 and 50 mm. A stepwise moving window search algorithm suitable for selecting features with a fixed order was developed to select in-vehicle noise features. Sound pressure levels at 400, 500, 630 and 800 Hz of in-vehicle noise are fed into the PPNN, and the average accuracy can reach 96.43%. The bogie acceleration characteristics calculated by the multi-body dynamics simulation model are used to recognize normal rail amplitudes of 0.1 and 0.2 mm. The bogie acceleration is decomposed by the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise, and a reconstructional signal is obtained. The energy entropy of the reconstructional signal is fed into the PPNN, and the average accuracy can reach 95.40%. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising energy storage solutions with low cost and superior safety, but they suffer from chemical and electrochemical degradations closely related to the electrolyte. Here, a new zinc salt design and a drop-in solution for long cycle-life aqueous ZIBs are reported. The salt Zn(BBI) 2 with a rationally designed anion group, N-(benzenesulfonyl)benzenesulfonamide (BBI - ), has a special amphiphilic molecular structure, which combines the benefits of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups to properly tune the solubility and interfacial condition. This new zinc salt does not contain fluorine and is synthesized via a high-yield and low-cost method. It is shown that 1 m Zn(BBI) 2 aqueous electrolyte with a widened cathodic stability window effectively stabilizes Zn metal/H 2 O interface, mitigates chemical and electrochemical degradations, and enables both symmetric and full cells using a zinc-metal electrode., (© 2023 The Authors. Mass transfer limitation usually causes the poor performance of biotrickling filters (BTFs) for the treatment of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during long-term operation. In this study, two identical lab-scale BTFs were established to remove a mixture of n-hexane and dichloromethane (DCM) gases using non-ionic surfactant Tween 20 by Pseudomonas mendocina NX-1 and Methylobacterium rhodesianum H13. A low pressure drop (≤110 Pa) and a rapid biomass accumulation (17.1 mg g -1 ) were observed in the presence of Tween 20 during the startup period (30 d). The removal efficiency (RE) of n-hexane was enhanced by 15.0%- 20.5% while DCM was completely removed with the inlet concentration (IC) of 300 mg·m -3 at different empty bed residence times in the Tween 20 added BTF. The viable cells and the relative hydrophobicity of the biofilm were increased under the action of Tween 20, which facilitated the mass transfer and enhanced the metabolic utilization of pollutants by microbes. Besides, Tween 20 addition enhanced the biofilm formation processes including the increased extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion, biofilm roughness and biofilm adhesion. Stable zinc (Zn)/electrolyte interface is critical for developing rechargeable aqueous Zn-metal batteries with long-term stability, which requires the dense and stable Zn electrodeposition. Herein, an interfacial lattice locking (ILL) layer is constructed via the electro-codeposition of Zn and Cu onto the Zn electrodes. The ILL layer shows a low lattice misfit (δ = 0.036) with Zn(002) plane and selectively locks the lattice orientation of Zn deposits, enabling the epitaxial growth of Zn deposits layer by layer. Benefiting from the unique orientation-guiding and robustly adhered properties, the ILL layer enables the symmetric Zn||Zn cells to achieve an ultralong life span of >6000 h at 1 mA cm -2 and 1 mAh cm -2 , a low overpotential (65 mV) at 10 mAh cm -2 , and a stable Zn plating/stripping for >90 h at an ultrahigh Zn depth of discharge (≈85%). In conventional lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), active lithium (Li) ions, which function as charge carriers and could only be supplied by the Li-containing cathodes, are also consumed during the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase. Such irreversible Li loss reduces the energy density of LIBs and is highly desired to be compensated by prelithiation additives. Herein, lithium selenide (Li 2 Se), which could be irreversibly converted into selenide (Se) at 2.5-3.8 V and thus supplies additional Li, is proposed as a cathode prelithiation additive for LIBs. Compared with previously reported prelithiation reagents ( e.g. , Li 6 CoO 4 , Li 2 O, and Li 2 S), the delithiation of Li 2 Se not only delivers a high specific capacity but also avoids gas release and incompatibility with carbonate electrolytes. The electrochemical characterizations show that with the addition of 6 wt % Li 2 Se to the LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathodes, a 9% increase in the initial specific capacity in half Li||LFP cells and a 19.8% increase in the energy density (based on the total mass of the two electrodes' materials) could be achieved without sacrificing the other battery performance. This work demonstrates the possibility to use Li 2 Se as a high-efficiency prelithiation additive for LIBs and provides a solution to the high-energy LIBs.

Li-ion batteries (LIBs) that can operate under low temperature (LT) conditions are essential for applications in orbital missions, subsea areas, and electric vehicles. Unfortunately, severe capacity loss is witnessed due to tremendous kinetic barriers that emerge at LT. Herein, to surmount such kinetic limitations, a low dielectric environment is tamed throughout the bulk electrolyte, which efficaciously brought the Li + desolvation energy down to 30.76 kJ mol -1 . At the meantime, the adoption of sodium cations (Na + ) is proposed as a hetero-cation additive, and a Li-Na hybrid and fluoride-rich interphase is further identified via preferential reduction of Na + -(solvent/anion) clusters, which is found to efficiently facilitate Li + migration through the LiF/NaF grain boundaries. Based on a N/P ratio of 1.1, the graphite/LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NCM) full cell (cathode loading of ≈18.5 mg cm -2 ) delivers a capacity as high as 125.1 mAh g -1 under -20 °C with prolonged cycling to 100 cycles. Finally, a 270 Wh kg -1 graphite/NCM pouch cell is assembled, which affords a discharge capacity of 108.7 mAh g -1 under -40 °C during the initial cycles. The use of non-solvating, or as-called sparingly-solvating, electrolytes (NSEs), is regarded as one of the most promising solutions to the obstacles to the practical applications of Li-S batteries. However, it remains a puzzle that long-life Li-S batteries have rarely, if not never, been reported with NSEs, despite their good compatibility with Li anode. Here, we find the capacity decay of Li-S batteries in NSEs is mainly due to the accumulation of the dead Li 2 S at the cathode side, rather than the degradation of the anodes or electrolytes. Based on this understanding, we propose an electrochemical strategy to reactivate the accumulated Li 2 S and revive the dead Li-S batteries in NSEs. With such a facile approach, Li-S batteries with significantly improved cycling stability and accelerated dynamics are achieved with diglyme-, acetonitrile- and 1,2-dimethoxyethane-based NSEs. Due to the poor electronic conductivity of solid sulfur and sulfides, the dissolution of S α- (α = 0, 2/8, 2/6, 2/4) into a liquid electrolyte and the vehicular diffusion of S α- to carbon black are necessary for the electrochemical activity of a sulfur cathode in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, exactly how much dissolution and diffusion are required for high sulfur utilization and how this may control the minimum electrolyte/sulfur ratio, (E/S) min , have not been quantitatively settled. In this work, we show experimentally that a dissolved polysulfide concentration which is too high (>10-20 MS) may gel the liquid electrolyte, leading to catastrophic loss of S α- mobility, a failure mode that is especially susceptible in a high-donor-number (DN) electrolyte under a lean condition (low E/S), similar to a traffic jam, resulting in high electrochemical polarization and low sulfur utilization. In contrast, we show that a low-DN electrolyte, even with a low polysulfide solubility of 0.1-0.5 MS, will never encounter a gelation catastrophe even at extremely low E/S, leading to unprecedentedly high energy density. Specifically, high sulfur utilizations of 96% (1600 mAh g -1 ) and 78% (1300 mAh g -1 ) are reached in an electrolyte as lean as E/S = 2 and 1 μL mg -1 Li-S coin cells when DME 1.6 LiFSI-HFE of low solvation capability (DN = 13.9) is adopted, even paired against a high-sulfur-loading cathode (5 mg cm -2 ).

Aim: Selexipag is an oral selective prostacyclin receptor agonist approved for treatment of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In the present study, we aim to assess the safety and efficacy of selexipag in triple combination therapy with endothelial receptor antagonists (ERAs) and PDE5is for Chinese PAH patients., Methods and Results: A single center retrospective study was performed on group 1 PAH patients ( n = 68) initiating triple combination therapy with selexipag from 1 February 2020 to 31 August 2021 in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (Shandong, China). Adolescents, children, and PAH patients with unrepaired congenital heart disease were excluded. The French pulmonary hypertension network (FPHN) non-invasive risk assessment, echocardiogram parameters, and clinical data, including tolerability, safety, and death/hospitalization events associated with PAH, were collected. Of the 68 patients, 31 (45.6%) patients had tolerable side effects while only a single patient discontinued selexipag due to severe diarrhea. In the analysis of the efficacy set of 62 patients, the median selexipag treatment time from selexipag initiation to last risk assessment was 27 (21, 33) weeks. Compared to baseline parameters, the percentage of WHO FC III/IV decreased from 77.4% (48) to 24.2% (15) ( p = 0.000), median 6-min walk distance (6MWD) increased 82 m [from 398 (318, 450) to 480 (420, 506) m; p = 0.000], and NT-proBNP levels decreased from 1,216 (329, 2,159) to 455 (134, 1,678) pg/mL ( p = 0.007). Patients who improved to three low-risk criteria increased from 9.7 to 38.7%. Right ventricular diameter (RV) diameter also decreased and was accompanied by an improved tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE). Patients transitioning from subcutaneous treprostinil to selexipag continued to show improvements in WHO FC, 6MWD (404 ± 94 vs. 383 ± 127 m) and NT-proBNP levels (2,319 ± 2,448 vs. 2,987 ± 3,770 pg/mL). This study aimed to apply a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to predict optimal dosing regimens of pazopanib (PAZ) for safe and effective administration when co-administered with CYP3A4 inhibitors, acid-reducing agents, food, and administered in patients with hepatic impairment. Here, we have successfully developed the population PBPK model and the predicted PK variables by this model matched well with the clinically observed data. Most ratios of prediction to observation were between 0.5 and 2.0. Suitable dosage modifications of PAZ have been identified using the PBPK simulations in various situations, i.e., 200 mg once daily (OD) or 100 mg twice daily (BID) when co-administered with the two CYP3A4 inhibitors, 200 mg BID when simultaneously administered with food or 800 mg OD when avoiding food uptake simultaneously. Additionally, the PBPK model also suggested that dosing does not need to be adjusted when co-administered with esomeprazole and administration in patients with wild hepatic impairment. Furthermore, the PBPK model also suggested that PAZ is not recommended to be administered in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Aqueous zinc batteries are appealing devices for cost-effective and environmentally sustainable energy storage. However, the zinc metal deposition at the anode strongly influences the battery cycle life and performance. To circumvent this issue, here we propose the use of lanthanum nitrate (La(NO 3 ) 3 ) as supporting salt for aqueous zinc sulfate (ZnSO 4 ) electrolyte solutions. Via physicochemical and electrochemical characterizations, we demonstrate that this peculiar electrolyte formulation weakens the electric double layer repulsive force, thus, favouring dense metallic zinc deposits and regulating the charge distribution at the zinc metal|electrolyte interface. When tested in Zn||VS 2 full coin cell configuration (with cathode mass loading of 16 mg cm -2 ), the electrolyte solution containing the lanthanum ions enables almost 1000 cycles at 1 A g -1 (after 5 activation cycles at 0.05 A g -1 ) with a stable discharge capacity of about 90 mAh g -1 and an average cell discharge voltage of ∼0.54 V., (© 2022. Artificial interfaces can alleviate the side reactions and the formation of the metallic (e.g., Li, Na, and Zn) dendrites. However, the traditional ones always breakdown during the repeated plating/stripping and fail to regulate the electrodeposition behaviors of the electrodes. Herein, a self-healable ion regulator (SIR) is designed as a desolvation shield to protect the Zn electrodes and guide the Zn electrodeposition. Benefiting from the intermolecular hydrogen bonds, SIR shows a superb capability to in situ repair the plating/stripping-induced cracks. Besides, the results of theoretical calculations and electrochemical characterizations show that the coating reduces water molecules in the solvated sheath of hydrated Zn 2+ and restrains the random Zn 2+ diffusion on the Zn surface. The effect of zinc on the kinetics of coke gasification was studied by a nonisothermal method. The results indicated that with the increase of zinc content, coke gasification tended to move to the low-temperature zone, it occurred earlier, and the reaction rate increased. The main curve fitting method was used to analyze the mechanism function of coke gasification before and after adding zinc. The modified shrinking core model was found to be the optimal mechanism function for coke gasification, with which the kinetic parameters obtained showed that the pre-exponential factor and apparent activation energy of coke gasification decreased significantly with the increase of zinc adsorption amount. Moreover, a kinetic compensation effect was found to exist in the effect of zinc on coke gasification. The Directional Polarimetric Camera (DPC) is the first Chinese multi-angle polarized Earth observation satellite sensor, which was successfully launched on 9 May 2018, onboard the GaoFen-5 satellite in the Chinese High-Resolution Earth Observation Program. The DPC's observation is one of the most important space-borne multi-spectral, multi-angular polarimetric measurements of the global Earth-atmosphere system at the present stage. Although rigorous radiometric calibration had been performed for the DPC before launch, its in-flight performance may change because of the process of launch, harsh environment of space, and aging of the sensor. Due to the absence of the onboard calibration system, vicarious calibration methods are necessary for the DPC's in-flight performance monitoring and calibration. In this paper, we adapted the Rayleigh absolute calibration method, the sun glint inter-band calibration method, and the sun glint polarization calibration method to the DPC sensor. First, the calibration errors of these three methods caused by ancillary data uncertainties (e.g., aerosol, chlorophyll concentration, absorption gases amount, and wind speed) were analyzed in detail. The error budgets show that the aerosol parameters (optical thickness and aerosol model) are some of the critical factors affecting both the radiometric and polarimetric calibration accuracies for the Rayleigh and sun glint methods. The DPC radiometric and polarimetric in-flight calibration during its commissioning phase was then implemented. The absolute coefficients of short spectral bands (443, 490, 565, and 670 nm) were calibrated by the well-characterized Rayleigh scattering signal over the ocean. Using the 565 nm band as a reference band, the Rayleigh absolute calibration was then transferred to other bands (443, 490, 670, and 865 nm) through inter-band calibration using the specular reflection of the sun over the ocean. The polarization measurements of the DPC at polarized bands (490, 670, and 865 nm) were calibrated with the polarized reflection of the sun glint over ocean. The preliminary results show that the radiometric sensitivity of the DPC changed very little after launch at the four visible bands. The absolute calibration coefficient differences from pre-flight calibration are smaller than 0.5% at the 443 and 670 nm bands, while they are within ±2 % at the 490 and 565 nm bands. However, a large deviation at 865 nm band of about 9% from pre-flight calibration was indicated by the sun glint inter-band calibration. The degree of linear polarization measurement of the DPC is validated with high accuracy of about 0.02 at the 865 nm band, while the deviation at 490 and 670 nm bands are relatively larger, reaching 0.04. The DPC/GaoFen-5 shows a good in-flight performance of radiometric measurement and generally reliable polarimetric measurement after launch.

Tropical forests store 40-50 per cent of terrestrial vegetation carbon 1 . However, spatial variations in aboveground live tree biomass carbon (AGC) stocks remain poorly understood, in particular in tropical montane forests 2 . Owing to climatic and soil changes with increasing elevation 3 , AGC stocks are lower in tropical montane forests compared with lowland forests 2 . Here we assemble and analyse a dataset of structurally intact old-growth forests (AfriMont) spanning 44 montane sites in 12 African countries. We find that montane sites in the AfriMont plot network have a mean AGC stock of 149.4 megagrams of carbon per hectare (95% confidence interval 137.1-164.2), which is comparable to lowland forests in the African Tropical Rainforest Observation Network 4 and about 70 per cent and 32 per cent higher than averages from plot networks in montane 2,5,6 and lowland 7 forests in the Neotropics, respectively. Notably, our results are two-thirds higher than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change default values for these forests in Africa 8 . We find that the low stem density and high abundance of large trees of African lowland forests 4 is mirrored in the montane forests sampled. This carbon store is endangered: we estimate that 0.8 million hectares of old-growth African montane forest have been lost since 2000. We provide country-specific montane forest AGC stock estimates modelled from our plot network to help to guide forest conservation and reforestation interventions. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in children accounts for a small proportion of all infections and is usually mild or asymptomatic. There are few studies on the clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children, and the causes of the low prevalence in children remain unclear. Herein, we compared the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection between adults and children. Fifty-two patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) were retrospectively analyzed, including 38 adults and 14 children. Their clinical information such as epidemiological exposure history, laboratory indicators, chest computed tomography (CT) performance, and number of SARS-CoV-2 positive days were analyzed and compared. In children, 5 (35.71%) had mild COVID-19 and 9 (64.29%) had common type, while, in adults, 9 (23.68%) cases were mild, and 29 (76.32%) were common COVID-19. Among them, family clustering infection accounted for 50% (7/14) of child cases and 23.68% (9/36) of adult cases. Epidemiological exposure history, clinical classification, clinical symptoms, chest CT manifestations, and number of SARS-CoV-2-positive days were not significantly different between children and adults. However, the percentage of neutrophils in adults was significantly higher than that in children ( P < 0.05). The percentage and absolute value of lymphocytes, platelet counts, aspartate aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase in adults were lower than those in children ( P < 0.05). Conclusively, children infected with SARS-CoV-2 show the characteristics of family clustering, and the proportion of mild and asymptomatic infections is higher. For families with a history of epidemiological exposure, routine SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid testing and chest CT examination should be performed in asymptomatic children to determine whether they are infected. For Li-Se batteries, ether- and carbonate-based electrolytes are commonly used. However, because of the "shuttle effect" of the highly dissoluble long-chain lithium polyselenides (LPSes, Li 2 Se n , 4≤n≤8) in the ether electrolytes and the sluggish one-step solid-solid conversion between Se and Li 2 Se in the carbonate electrolytes, a large amount of porous carbon (>40 wt % in the electrode) is always needed for the Se cathodes, which seriously counteracts the advantage of Se electrodes in terms of volumetric capacity. Herein an acetonitrile-based electrolyte is introduced for the Li-Se system, and a two-plateau conversion mechanism is proposed. This new Li-Se chemistry not only avoids the shuttle effect but also facilitates the conversion between Se and Li 2 Se, enabling an efficient Se cathode with high Se utilization (97 %) and enhanced Coulombic efficiency. Moreover, with such a designed electrolyte, a highly compact Se electrode (2.35 g Se  cm -3 ) with a record-breaking Se content (80 wt %) and high Se loading (8 mg cm -2 ) is demonstrated to have a superhigh volumetric energy density of up to 2502 Wh L -1 , surpassing that of LiCoO 2 ., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The sensitivity of tropical forest carbon to climate is a key uncertainty in predicting global climate change. Although short-term drying and warming are known to affect forests, it is unknown if such effects translate into long-term responses. Here, we analyze 590 permanent plots measured across the tropics to derive the equilibrium climate controls on forest carbon. Maximum temperature is the most important predictor of aboveground biomass (-9.1 megagrams of carbon per hectare per degree Celsius), primarily by reducing woody productivity, and has a greater impact per °C in the hottest forests (>32.2°C). Our results nevertheless reveal greater thermal resilience than observations of short-term variation imply. Lean electrolyte (small E/S ratio) is urgently needed to achieve high practical energy densities in Li-S batteries, but there is a distinction between the cathode's absorbed electrolyte (AE) which is cathode-intrinsic and total added electrolyte (E) which depends on cell geometry. While total pore volume in sulfur cathodes affects AE/S and performance, it is shown here that pore morphology, size, connectivity, and fill factor all matter. Compared to conventional thermally dried sulfur cathodes that usually render "open lakes" and closed pores, a freeze-dried and compressed (FDS-C) sulfur cathode is developed with a canal-capillary pore structure, which exhibits high mean performance and greatly reduces cell-to-cell variation, even at high sulfur loading (14.2 mg cm -2 ) and ultralean electrolyte condition (AE/S = 1.2 µL mg -1 ). Interestingly, as AE/S is swept from 2 to 1.2 µL mg -1 , the electrode pores go from fully flooded to semi-flooded, and the coin cell still maintains function until (AE/S) min ≈ 1.2 µL mg -1 is reached. When scaled up to Ah-level pouch cells, the full-cell energy density can reach 481 Wh kg -1 as its E/S ≈ AE/S ratio can be reduced to 1.2 µL mg -1 , proving high-performance pouch cells can actually be working in the ultralean, semi-flooded regime., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2020 The Authors. Structurally intact tropical forests sequestered about half of the global terrestrial carbon uptake over the 1990s and early 2000s, removing about 15 per cent of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions 1-3 . Climate-driven vegetation models typically predict that this tropical forest 'carbon sink' will continue for decades 4,5 . Here we assess trends in the carbon sink using 244 structurally intact African tropical forests spanning 11 countries, compare them with 321 published plots from Amazonia and investigate the underlying drivers of the trends. The carbon sink in live aboveground biomass in intact African tropical forests has been stable for the three decades to 2015, at 0.66 tonnes of carbon per hectare per year (95 per cent confidence interval 0.53-0.79), in contrast to the long-term decline in Amazonian forests 6 . Therefore the carbon sink responses of Earth's two largest expanses of tropical forest have diverged. The difference is largely driven by carbon losses from tree mortality, with no detectable multi-decadal trend in Africa and a long-term increase in Amazonia. Both continents show increasing tree growth, consistent with the expected net effect of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide and air temperature 7-9 . Despite the past stability of the African carbon sink, our most intensively monitored plots suggest a post-2010 increase in carbon losses, delayed compared to Amazonia, indicating asynchronous carbon sink saturation on the two continents. A statistical model including carbon dioxide, temperature, drought and forest dynamics accounts for the observed trends and indicates a long-term future decline in the African sink, whereas the Amazonian sink continues to weaken rapidly. Overall, the uptake of carbon into Earth's intact tropical forests peaked in the 1990s. Given that the global terrestrial carbon sink is increasing in size, independent observations indicating greater recent carbon uptake into the Northern Hemisphere landmass 10 reinforce our conclusion that the intact tropical forest carbon sink has already peaked. This saturation and ongoing decline of the tropical forest carbon sink has consequences for policies intended to stabilize Earth's climate.

As countries advance in greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting for climate change mitigation, consistent estimates of aboveground net biomass change (∆AGB) are needed. Countries with limited forest monitoring capabilities in the tropics and subtropics rely on IPCC 2006 default ∆AGB rates, which are values per ecological zone, per continent. Similarly, research into forest biomass change at a large scale also makes use of these rates. IPCC 2006 default rates come from a handful of studies, provide no uncertainty indications and do not distinguish between older secondary forests and old-growth forests. As part of the 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, we incorporate ∆AGB data available from 2006 onwards, comprising 176 chronosequences in secondary forests and 536 permanent plots in old-growth and managed/logged forests located in 42 countries in Africa, North and South America and Asia. We generated ∆AGB rate estimates for younger secondary forests (≤20 years), older secondary forests (>20 years and up to 100 years) and old-growth forests, and accounted for uncertainties in our estimates. In tropical rainforests, for which data availability was the highest, our ∆AGB rate estimates ranged from 3.4 (Asia) to 7.6 (Africa) Mg ha -1  year -1 in younger secondary forests, from 2.3 (North and South America) to 3.5 (Africa) Mg ha -1  year -1 in older secondary forests, and 0.7 (Asia) to 1.3 (Africa) Mg ha -1  year -1 in old-growth forests. We provide a rigorous and traceable refinement of the IPCC 2006 default rates in tropical and subtropical ecological zones, and identify which areas require more research on ∆AGB. Sn/Nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (Sn@N-G) composites have been successfully synthesized via a facile method for lithium-ion batteries. Compared with the Sn or Sn/graphene anodes, the Sn@N-G anode exhibits a superb rate capability of 535 mAh g -1 at 2C and cycling stability up to 300 cycles at 0.5C. The improved lithium-storage performance of Sn@N-G anode could be ascribed to the effective graphene wrapping, which accommodates the large volume change of Sn during the charge-discharge process, while the nitrogen doping increases the electronic conductivity of graphene, as well as provides a large number of active sites as reservoirs for Li + storage.

Onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis are two neglected tropical diseases that together affect ∼157 million people and inflict severe disability. Both diseases are caused by parasitic filarial nematodes with elimination efforts constrained by the lack of a safe drug that can kill the adult filaria (macrofilaricide). Previous proof-of-concept human trials have demonstrated that depleting >90% of the essential nematode endosymbiont bacterium, Wolbachia , using antibiotics, can lead to permanent sterilization of adult female parasites and a safe macrofilaricidal outcome. AWZ1066S is a highly specific anti- Wolbachia candidate selected through a lead optimization program focused on balancing efficacy, safety and drug metabolism/pharmacokinetic (DMPK) features of a thienopyrimidine/quinazoline scaffold derived from phenotypic screening. AWZ1066S shows superior efficacy to existing anti- Wolbachia therapies in validated preclinical models of infection and has DMPK characteristics that are compatible with a short therapeutic regimen of 7 days or less. Most of the planet's diversity is concentrated in the tropics, which includes many regions undergoing rapid climate change. Yet, while climate-induced biodiversity changes are widely documented elsewhere, few studies have addressed this issue for lowland tropical ecosystems. Here we investigate whether the floristic and functional composition of intact lowland Amazonian forests have been changing by evaluating records from 106 long-term inventory plots spanning 30 years. We analyse three traits that have been hypothesized to respond to different environmental drivers (increase in moisture stress and atmospheric CO 2 concentrations): maximum tree size, biogeographic water-deficit affiliation and wood density. Tree communities have become increasingly dominated by large-statured taxa, but to date there has been no detectable change in mean wood density or water deficit affiliation at the community level, despite most forest plots having experienced an intensification of the dry season. However, among newly recruited trees, dry-affiliated genera have become more abundant, while the mortality of wet-affiliated genera has increased in those plots where the dry season has intensified most. Thus, a slow shift to a more dry-affiliated Amazonia is underway, with changes in compositional dynamics (recruits and mortality) consistent with climate-change drivers, but yet to significantly impact whole-community composition. Objective: Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE), as one of the most popular natural drug extracted from the grape, has been reported to improve endothelial function and arteriosclerosis. However, little is known about the influence of GSPE on hypertension and vascular remodeling. Profilin-1, an Actin-binding protein, is closely involved in the remodeling of large vessels in ouabain-induced hypertension. To date, there is no effective prevention or treatment in place for the high incidence of ischemic stroke associated with hypertension. In this study, we aimed to determine the role of GSPE via inhibition Profilin-1 in ischemic cerebral cortices of ouabain-hypertension rats and potentially provide a new target to prevent stroke associated with hypertension., Materials and Methods: The blood pressure of male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats was measured during a period of ouabain-induced hypertension. The expression of Profilin-1, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the cerebral cortex were determined by quantitative Real Time-PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blot. Histopathological and behavioral tests were also conducted., Results: Blood pressure elevation started at week 5 and reached clinical standards for hypertension at week 8. GSPE was proved to suppress Profilin-1 and VEGF levels through inhibition of Profilin-1-protein kinase B (AKT)-hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) signal pathway and promote eNOS expression. Moreover, the histopathological and ethiological improvement was observed in GSPE over-expression and Profilin-1 inhibition groups., Conclusions: We detected that GSPE could improve cerebral vascular damage through inhibiting Profilin-1 in an ouabain-induced hypertension model.

Topography is a key driver of tropical forest structure and composition, as it constrains local nutrient and hydraulic conditions within which trees grow. Yet, we do not fully understand how changes in forest physiognomy driven by topography impact other emergent properties of forests, such as their aboveground carbon density (ACD). Working in Borneo - at a site where 70-m-tall forests in alluvial valleys rapidly transition to stunted heath forests on nutrient-depleted dip slopes - we combined field data with airborne laser scanning and hyperspectral imaging to characterise how topography shapes the vertical structure, wood density, diversity and ACD of nearly 15 km 2 of old-growth forest. We found that subtle differences in elevation - which control soil chemistry and hydrology - profoundly influenced the structure, composition and diversity of the canopy. Capturing these processes was critical to explaining landscape-scale heterogeneity in ACD, highlighting how emerging remote sensing technologies can provide new insights into long-standing ecological questions., (© 2018 The Authors. Quantifying the relationship between tree diameter and height is a key component of efforts to estimate biomass and carbon stocks in tropical forests. Although substantial site-to-site variation in height-diameter allometries has been documented, the time consuming nature of measuring all tree heights in an inventory plot means that most studies do not include height, or else use generic pan-tropical or regional allometric equations to estimate height.Using a pan-tropical dataset of 73 plots where at least 150 trees had in-field ground-based height measurements, we examined how the number of trees sampled affects the performance of locally derived height-diameter allometries, and evaluated the performance of different methods for sampling trees for height measurement.Using cross-validation, we found that allometries constructed with just 20 locally measured values could often predict tree height with lower error than regional or climate-based allometries (mean reduction in prediction error = 0.46 m). The predictive performance of locally derived allometries improved with sample size, but with diminishing returns in performance gains when more than 40 trees were sampled. Estimates of stand-level biomass produced using local allometries to estimate tree height show no over- or under-estimation bias when compared with biomass estimates using field measured heights. We evaluated five strategies to sample trees for height measurement, and found that sampling strategies that included measuring the heights of the ten largest diameter trees in a plot outperformed (in terms of resulting in local height-diameter models with low height prediction error) entirely random or diameter size-class stratified approaches.Our results indicate that even limited sampling of heights can be used to refine height-diameter allometries. We recommend aiming for a conservative threshold of sampling 50 trees per location for height measurement, and including the ten trees with the largest diameter in this sample.

Knowledge about the biogeographic affinities of the world's tropical forests helps to better understand regional differences in forest structure, diversity, composition, and dynamics. Such understanding will enable anticipation of region-specific responses to global environmental change. Modern phylogenies, in combination with broad coverage of species inventory data, now allow for global biogeographic analyses that take species evolutionary distance into account. Here we present a classification of the world's tropical forests based on their phylogenetic similarity. We identify five principal floristic regions and their floristic relationships: ( i ) Indo-Pacific, ( ii ) Subtropical, ( iii ) African, ( iv ) American, and ( v ) Dry forests. Our results do not support the traditional neo- versus paleotropical forest division but instead separate the combined American and African forests from their Indo-Pacific counterparts. We also find indications for the existence of a global dry forest region, with representatives in America, Africa, Madagascar, and India. Less than half of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions remain in the atmosphere. While carbon balance models imply large carbon uptake in tropical forests, direct on-the-ground observations are still lacking in Southeast Asia. Here, using long-term plot monitoring records of up to half a century, we find that intact forests in Borneo gained 0.43 Mg C ha -1 per year (95% CI 0.14-0.72, mean period 1988-2010) above-ground live biomass. These results closely match those from African and Amazonian plot networks, suggesting that the world's remaining intact tropical forests are now en masse out-of-equilibrium. Although both pan-tropical and long-term, the sink in remaining intact forests appears vulnerable to climate and land use changes. Across Borneo the 1997-1998 El Niño drought temporarily halted the carbon sink by increasing tree mortality, while fragmentation persistently offset the sink and turned many edge-affected forests into a carbon source to the atmosphere.

Metal-air batteries, especially Li-air batteries, have attracted significant research attention in the past decade. However, the electrochemical reactions between CO 2 (0.04 % in ambient air) with Li anode may lead to the irreversible formation of insulating Li 2 CO 3 , making the battery less rechargeable. To make the Li-CO 2 batteries usable under ambient conditions, it is critical to develop highly efficient catalysts for the CO 2 reduction and evolution reactions and investigate the electrochemical behavior of Li-CO 2 batteries. Here, we demonstrate a rechargeable Li-CO 2 battery with a high reversibility by using B,N-codoped holey graphene as a highly efficient catalyst for CO 2 reduction and evolution reactions. Benefiting from the unique porous holey nanostructure and high catalytic activity of the cathode, the as-prepared Li-CO 2 batteries exhibit high reversibility, low polarization, excellent rate performance, and superior long-term cycling stability over 200 cycles at a high current density of 1.0 A g -1 . Tropical forests are global centres of biodiversity and carbon storage. Many tropical countries aspire to protect forest to fulfil biodiversity and climate mitigation policy targets, but the conservation strategies needed to achieve these two functions depend critically on the tropical forest tree diversity-carbon storage relationship. Assessing this relationship is challenging due to the scarcity of inventories where carbon stocks in aboveground biomass and species identifications have been simultaneously and robustly quantified. Here, we compile a unique pan-tropical dataset of 360 plots located in structurally intact old-growth closed-canopy forest, surveyed using standardised methods, allowing a multi-scale evaluation of diversity-carbon relationships in tropical forests. Diversity-carbon relationships among all plots at 1 ha scale across the tropics are absent, and within continents are either weak (Asia) or absent (Amazonia, Africa). A weak positive relationship is detectable within 1 ha plots, indicating that diversity effects in tropical forests may be scale dependent. The absence of clear diversity-carbon relationships at scales relevant to conservation planning means that carbon-centred conservation strategies will inevitably miss many high diversity ecosystems. As tropical forests can have any combination of tree diversity and carbon stocks both require explicit consideration when optimising policies to manage tropical carbon and biodiversity.

A lithium-polysulfide cell with superior stability is reported with N,O-codoped carbon hollow fiber (NCHF) sheets as a current collector. Due to the highly effective chemisorption and physical adsorption of lithium polysulfides on doped NCHF and a uniform Li2S precipitation during cycling, the Li2S6-impregnated NCHF electrodes exhibit high sulfur utilization and superior cycling stability even with a high areal sulfur loading of 6.2 mg cm(-2).
