The allogenic bone marrow transplantation has turned from experimental treatment method into standard therapy of many malignant hematological diseases, autoimmune disorders and immunodeficiency conditions. The need for bone marrow transplantation is experienced by thousands of patients with blood cancer at the limited number of real donors. The determining potential of donation, as well as identifying motives and factors that contribute into or prevent joining of citizens the register of bone marrow donors, is of particular actuality. The study was carried out in two stages, based on combined strategy of methods for collecting empirical information (mixed methods research). At the first stage, based on the results of series of in-depth interviews implemented within the framework of the Blood 5 media project (Rusfond, 2019), the types of motivations for donation were identified. At the second stage (June 2022) formalized survey of potential donors of the Vasya Perevoshchikov National Register of Bone Marrow Donors (hereinafter referred to as the National Register) was carried out. The sampling included 8037 respondents: 13.7% of all bone marrow donors listed in the National Register. The opinions of the Russians that joined the National Register demonstrate complicated picture of motives and factors determining personal strategies and experience of participation in donation. The fears and obstacles to bone marrow donation are widespread in public consciousness due to insufficient information about donorship procedure and its consequences. The donorship potential is rather high, but it is not fully implemented. The Russians are frustrated about participating in donorship. They understand the need for donorship, realize it as moral duty, as complicity to important cause, empathy towards patients. At the same time they are afraid for their health, because they are not sufficiently aware of the essence of donorship and its consequences.

The shortage of transplants and their corollary, the need for transplants, have led France to expand its organ procurement options. Since 2005, France has benefited from a new medical, legal and organizational framework for organ procurement from deceased donors after circulatory arrest, in accordance with Maastricht category III., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Masson SAS. Background: There is a discrepancy between the reported increase in donor conversion rates and the number of organs available for transplant., Methods: Secondary analysis of data obtained from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients from January 2003 through December 2015 was performed. The primary outcomes were the (1) number of brain-dead donors from whom solid organs were recovered and (2) number of the organs transplanted. Descriptive statistics and growth plots were used to examine the trajectory of organ donation, recovery, and transplantation outcomes over the 11-year period., Results: From 2003 to 2006, the number of brain-dead donors increased from 6187 to 7375, remaining relatively stable at approximately 7200 thereafter. The average eligible deaths per organ procurement organization dropped from 182.7 (standard deviation [SD]: 131.3) in 2003 to 149.3 (SD: 111.4) in 2015. This suggests a total of 12 493 unrealized potential donors (2006-2015)., Conclusions: Since 2006, a steady decline in the number of donor-eligible deaths was reported. In 2003, the reported eligible deaths was 11 326. This number peaked in 2004 at 11 346, tumbling to 9781 eligible donors in 2015, despite a 9% increase in the US population. From 2006 to 2015, the data indicate an artificial depression and underestimation of the true potential of brain-dead donors in the United States of conservatively 12 493 donors or 39 728 missing organs. New metrics providing objective but verifiable counts of the donor pool are needed.

Introduction: Morocco stays far behind other countries in the domain of organ donation and transplantation. Improving the knowledge of Moroccan students, about organ donation and transplantation, can be a key factor in the development of transplant activity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of students concerning organ donation and transplantation., Materials and Methods: The opinion survey was conducted in Marrakech city, with four high education structures with a pre-established questionnaire. The survey questions answered four main themes, which are: the evaluation of knowledge, the opinion and attitude of citizen, the explanation of refusal and the propositions to encourage organ donation in Morocco., Results: Hundred percent of surveyed subjects answered the questionnaire. Among them, 40.3% were men. The middle age was 21.5 years. Out of 503 surveyed students, 89.4% were aware of organ transplant in Morocco. A quarter of students believed that removal and transplant acts were realized just in public health establishments, which have the authorization. Two persons out of 3 were able to identify transplantable organs and tissues. More than half accepted to donate their organs after death. The religious reason was in the head list of refusal determinants of organ donation after death, with a prevalence of 39.7%., Conclusion: Young Moroccans have limited knowledge relating to organ donation. The development of this therapy needs to establish an adequate project of information and motivation of general population., (Copyright © 2015 Association Société de néphrologie.
