The use of plastic materials has brought about significant social benefits but has also led to negative consequences, particularly their accumulation in aquatic environments. Studies have shown that small plastic particles, known as microplastics (MPs), can carry various harmful pollutants, such as heavy metals (HMs). Therefore, the aim of this research is to investigate the impact of polyethylene-type MPs on the long-term exposure of different HMs on freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus armatus and cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa, in both isolated cultures and phytoplanktonic community conditions. Over a period of 28 days, the strains were subjected to concentrations of Ag + , Cu +2 , and Cr +6 corresponding to their respective 72 h-EC 10 , with or without the presence of MPs. Throughout this period, the growth cell ratio, photosynthetic activity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were monitored. The findings indicated a substantial inhibitory impact on cell growth during the initial 7-14 days of exposure, followed by a reduction until reaching values like the controls after 28 days of exposure. There was a disturbance in photosynthetic activity during the first 72 h of exposure, which gradually returned to control levels, mainly significantly affected the respiration phase. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity was also affected during the initial 14 days of exposure. The presence or absence of MPs in the culture medium did not significantly alter the observed effects. However, interspecies competition created a more favorable environment for M. aeruginosa over the freshwater microalgae S. armatus. These findings suggest that the formation of MP-HMs complexes may have a limited impact on reducing the adverse effects of HMs in long-term exposures. Microplastics (MPs) and pesticides are two pollutants of concern in agricultural soils. 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA), a highly toxic metabolite of dicarboximide fungicides, commonly co-exists with MPs and poses a risk to the environment and food safety. Batch adsorption and soil incubation experiments were employed to investigate the effects of polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on the environmental behavior of 3,5-DCA in soil. Chive (Allium ascalonicum) was used as the experimental plant, a pot experiment was conducted to examine the effects of individual or combined exposure to MPs and 3,5-DCA on plant 3,5-DCA bioaccumulation, growth characteristics, and phytotoxicity. The results showed that PE- and PLA-MPs increased the adsorption capacity of soil to 3,5-DCA and prolonged the degradation half-life of 3,5-DCA by 6.24 and 16.07 d, respectively. Two MPs partially alleviated the negative effects of 3,5-DCA on the root length and fresh weight of chives, while PE-MPs had a positive and dose-dependent impact on the contents of photosynthetic pigment in chive leaves. Co-exposure to 3,5-DCA and MPs increased residues of 3,5-DCA in soil and chive roots but had no significant effect on 3,5-DCA residues in chive stems or leaves. Moreover, 3,5-DCA residues in PLA-MP soil were consistently higher than those in PE-MP soil. Conclusively, MPs altered the 3,5-DCA adsorption and degradation behavior in soil, as well as its bioaccumulation in chives. Microplastics (MPs)-induced changes in soil nutrient cycling and microbial activity may pose a potential risk to soil ecosystem. Although some studies have explored these topics, there is still a large space for exploration and a relative lack of research on the mechanism by which soil health and its functions are affected by these changes. Thus, this study investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) MPs with two particle sizes (13 μm and 130 μm) at five concentrations (0%, 1%, 3%, 6% and 10%, w/w) on soil biochemical properties and ecosystem function. The findings revealed that the exposure to 13 μm MPs significantly reduced soil respiration (Res) rate, β-glucosidase (Glu) and catalase (CAT) activity, which accompanied with enhanced urease activity and decreased soil pH, available phosphorus (AP), dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and available potassium (AK) content in most cases. However, 130 μm MPs exerted negligible influence on the DOC and DRP content, Glu and CAT activity. High concentrations of 130 μm MPs significantly reduced soil pH, total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), AP and AK content, but significantly increased soil Res rate. Overall, soil ecosystem function was significantly reduced by the addition of MPs. The Res rate, soil AP and DRP content and Glu activity were the most important predictors of soil ecosystem function. We found that the risk posed by MPs to soil ecosystem function was dose-dependent and size-dependent. Agricultural mulching films are potential sources of microplastics (MPs) in soil. As an alternative to conventional non-degradable mulching films, a variety of different biodegradable mulching films are used. However, it is not yet known whether MPs from biodegradable mulching films pose a lower risk to terrestrial invertebrates compared to MPs from conventional mulching films. In this study, the effects of MPs produced from two conventional polyethylene (PE-1 and PE-2) and two biodegradable (starch-based poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate); PBAT-BD-1, and PBAT-BD-2) fossil-based mulching films on terrestrial crustacean woodlice Porcellio scaber and mealworm Tenebrio molitor were compared. A key finding was that no clear differences in induced responses between biodegradable and conventional MPs were detected. No adverse effects on P. scaber after two weeks and on T. molitor after four weeks of exposure were observed up to 5 % (w/w dry soil) of either MP type. However, some sublethal physiological changes in metabolic rate and immune parameters were found in P. scaber after two weeks of exposure indicating a response of organisms to the presence of MP exposure in soil. In addition, it was demonstrated that both types of MPs might affect the soil water holding capacity and pH. Tire wear particles (TWPs) in stormwater runoff have been widely detected and were generally classified into microplastics (MPs). TWPs and conventional MPs can be intercepted and accumulated in stormwater filtration systems, but their impacts on filtration, adsorption and microbial degradation processes of conventional pollutants (organic matters, nitrate and ammonium) have not been clarified. TWPs are different from MPs in surface feature, chemical components, adsorption ability and leaching of additives, which might lead to their different impacts on conventional pollutants removal. In this study, five different levels of aged polyethylene MPs (PEMPs) and aged TWPs contamination in stormwater filtration systems were simulated using thirty-three filtration columns. Results showed that ultraviolet aging treatment was less influential for the aging of TWPs than that of PEMPs, the specific surface area of aged PEMPs (1.603 m 2 /g) was over two times of unaged TWPs (0.728 m 2 /g) in the same size. Aged PEMPs and aged TWPs had different impacts on conventional pollutants removal performance and microbial communities, and the difference might be enlarged with exposure duration. The intensified aged PEMPs contamination generally promoted conventional pollutants removal, whereas aged TWPs showed an opposite trend. Mild contamination (0.01% and 0.1%, wt%) of aged PEMP/TWPs was beneficial to the richness and diversity of microbial communities, whereas higher contamination of aged PEMPs/TWPs was harmful. Aged PEMPs and TWPs had different impact on microbial community structure. Overall, the study found that TWPs were more detrimental than PEMPs in filtration systems. Nanofiltration (NF) technology is increasingly used in the water treatment and separation fields. However, most research has focused on refining the selective layer while overlooking the potential role of the supporting layer. With expertise in ultrathin polymer films, particularly in the production of polyethylene (PE) membranes, we explore the possibility of improving NF membrane performance by precisely controlling the structure and surface properties of the ultrathin supporting layer in this work. Here, we introduced an innovative NF membrane that used a submicrometer ultrathin PE membrane produced through a biaxial stretching process, which is significantly thinner than commercial PE membranes available on the market. The core innovations are as follows: first, we focused on precise control of the supporting layer rather than just the selective layer, achieving significant enhancements in overall NF membrane performance; second, the ultrathin PE supporting layer served as a tunable interface for interfacial polymerization, offering possibilities for structural control of the selective layer and advancing membrane performance innovations. The resulting NF membrane boasts an overall thickness of ∼630 nm, which represents the thinnest NF membrane documented to date. This ultrathin NF membrane showed an ultrahigh Cl - /SO 4 2- selectivity of 338.03, placing it at the forefront of existing literature. This study sheds light on the important role of the supporting layer in the preparation of selective layers. We believe that this approach has the potential to contribute to the development of ultrathin, high-performance NF membranes.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the world's oceans and pose serious environmental concerns, including their ingestion and the release of potentially toxic mixtures of intrinsic and extrinsic chemical compounds (i.e. leachates; MPLs). Mussels, as key intertidal bioengineers and filter-feeders are particularly susceptible to both exposure pathways. While the effects of microplastic ingestion have been widely investigated, research on the impacts of MPLs has only recently begun. This study examined the influence of MPLs derived from beached pellets collected in two separate regions, namely France and Portugal, on the respiration rates of two key ecosystem engineers, Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis. Possibly due to distinct mixtures of leached chemicals, unlike Portuguese-MPLs, exposure to French-MPLs significantly decreased the respiration rate of both mussel species. This research provides new insights into the physiological impacts of MPLs on bioengineer species, highlighting the importance of MP source and potential cascading effects at the ecosystem level. This study investigates the effect of aging of polyethylene (PE) microplastics (MP) on its interaction with organic compounds (OCs). Initially, pristine PE MPs were subjected to UV-aging, followed by characterization of their chemical structure and thermal properties. UV-aging resulted in formation of new functional groups such as carbonyl (CO), -OH, and unsaturation, along with changes in crystallinity and melting temperature. Complimentary sorption experiments were conducted with a suite of environmentally significant and structurally related OCs i.e., phenol, 2,3,6-trichlorophenol, triclosan, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, tetrachloroethylene and hexachloroethane, using pristine and UV-aged PE MPs. In addition to the distribution coefficients (i.e., K PEW ) obtained experimentally, relevant data from the literature was also gathered for the purpose of developing a poly-parametric linear free energy relationship (pp-LFER) model. Two models were developed for predicting sorption onto: (i) only UV-aged PE, yielding an R 2  = 0.96, RMSE = 0.19 (n = 16), (ii) PE that has undergone various types of aging, yielding an R 2  = 0.83, RMSE = 0.68 (n = 36). Lastly, a direct comparison was performed between two pp-LFERs developed for the interaction of the same OCs with pristine vs. aged PE (n = 7). In addition to the predictive strength, the system coefficients enabled mechanistic inferences to be made; such that while molecular volume or non-specific hydrophobic interactions govern OC-pristine PE interactions, polar interactions and H-bonding also play important roles for OC-aged PE interactions. Trifluralin, Chlorpyrifos, and Procymidone migration performance from polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable (Mater-Bi: M-B) mulching films was examined. Desorption of pesticides from PE and M-B was studied using soil-plastic microcosms, considering temperature, soil humidity, and mulching film type as experimental variables. Trifluralin and Chlorpyrifos desorption was higher for PE than for M-B under all experimental conditions. In both cases, as the temperature increased from 25º C to 40º C, pesticide migration also increased, whereas as the soil humidity raised from 30% to 60%, pesticide desorption decreased. In the case of Procymidone, migration from PE and M-B at 25º C was similar under both soil moisture conditions. Migration percentages were similar for both mulch films at 40ºC and 30% soil humidity. However, at higher soil moisture (60%), migration from M-B was greater than from PE. A linear relationship was observed between the percentage of migration and the vapor pressure of the pesticides. In all cases, migration increased with higher vapor pressure, indicating a possible migration mechanism in the vapor phase. Pesticide migration increased at high temperatures (40º C). The effect of soil humidity in reducing pesticide migration was more significant at lower levels (30%). In addition, the mesoplastic sorption of pesticides in soil columns was studied using PE and M-B films. While the recoveries for Trifluralin, Chlorpyrifos, and Procymidone in the PE films were 0.05% ± 0.01%, 0.13% ± 0.03%, and non-detectable, the recoveries for M-B were: 0.49% ± 0.07%, 0.31% ± 0.09%, and 0.17% ± 0.10%, respectively, indicating that M-B was a better adsorbent than PE in all cases. This behavior should be considered in combination with the lower migration percentages observed for this type of mulching film in the microcosm experiments. In this study, we show that low-density polyethylene films, a prevalent choice for food packaging in everyday life, generated high numbers of microplastics (MPs) and hundreds to thousands of plastic-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) substances under simulated food preparation and storage conditions. Specifically, the plastic film generated 66-2034 MPs/cm 2 (size range 10-5000 μm) under simulated aging conditions involving microwave irradiation, heating, steaming, UV irradiation, refrigeration, freezing, and freeze-thaw cycling alongside contact with water, which were 15-453 times that of the control (plastic film immersed in water without aging). We also noticed a substantial release of plastic-derived DOM. Using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry, we identified 321-1414 analytes with molecular weights ranging from 200 to 800 Da, representing plastic-derived DOM containing C, H, and O. The DOM substances included both degradation products of polyethylene (including oxidized forms of oligomers) and toxic plastic additives. Interestingly, although no apparent oxidation was observed for the plastic film under aging conditions, plastic-derived DOM was more oxidized (average O/C increased by 27-46%) following aging with a higher state of carbon saturation and higher polarity. These findings highlight the future need to assess risks associated with MP and DOM release from plastic wraps.

A consortium of landfill bacteria including strain G3 can break down polyethylene, a long-lasting plastic that accumulates in the environment. The complete genome sequence of strain G3 was determined by PacBio and Nanopore sequencing and consists of three circular replicons. Polyethylene (PE) is the most abundant plastic waste, and its conversion to hydrogen (H 2 ) offers a promising route for clean energy generation. However, PE decomposition typically requires high temperatures due to its strong chemical bonds, leading to significant carbon emissions and low H 2 selectivity (theoretically less than 75 vol % after accounting for further steam-reforming reactions). Here, we report a mechanocatalytic strategy that upcycles PE into high-purity H 2 (99.4 vol %) with an exceptional H 2 recovery ratio of 98.5 % (versus 15.7 % via thermocatalysis), using manganese as a catalyst at a low temperature of 45 °C. This method achieves a reaction rate 3 orders of magnitude higher than thermocatalysis. The marked improvement in H 2 recovery ratio is mainly due to metal carbides formation induced by the mechanocatalytic process, which does not catalyze hydrocarbons formation. Background: The increasing use of plastic packaging materials generates concerns related to the environmental problem generated by their waste. As a result, the search for new recycling methodologies to extend the lifecycle of plastic packaging is becoming more important, without forgetting to ensure the safety of these materials. Currently, the use of recycled polyolefins as food contact materials is not widespread yet. This is because the decontamination processes currently available are insufficient to produce clean, safe materials suitable for such applications. This work is focused on the evaluation of the safety of recycled high-density polyethylene (rHDPE), and the search for strategies to achieve its decontamination., Results: To this end, three batches of flakes and three batches of pellets of rHDPE coming from the mechanical recycling of post-consumer milk bottles were analyzed. The analysis of the volatile and semi-volatile compounds present in the samples was carried out using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), finding a total of 67 compounds. The strategy to achieve the decontamination of flakes and pellets of this material has been based on the application of high temperature and vacuum at lab scale, obtaining a clear decrease in volatile compounds, below 50% of the initial value in most cases when applying 120 °C during 5 h. The migration test performed in the samples (treated and untreated) to different food simulants (10 % ethanol and 3 % acetic acid, 95 % ethanol) revealed also a clear decrease of concentrations of volatiles., Significance: The findings are highly encouraging, demonstrating substantial progress toward the safe and effective use of rHDPE in specific food packaging applications. This indicates a significant step forward in the potential uses of rHDPE. Background: The risk of re-operation, otherwise known as revision, following primary hip replacement depends in part on the prosthesis implant materials used. Current performance evidences are based on a broad categorisation grouping together different materials with potentially varying revision risks. We investigated the revision rate of primary total hip replacement (THR) reported in the National Joint Registry by specific types of bearing surfaces used., Methods and Findings: We analysed THR procedures across all orthopaedic units in England and Wales. All patients who received a primary THR between 2003 and 2019 in the public and private sectors were included. We investigated the all-cause and indication-specific risks of revision using flexible parametric survival analyses to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs). We identified primary THRs with heads and monobloc cups or modular acetabular component THRs with head and shell/liner combinations. A total of 1,026,481 primary THRs were analysed (Monobloc: n = 378,979 and Modular: n = 647,502) with 20,869 (2%) of these primary THRs subsequently undergoing a revision episode (Monobloc: n = 7,381 and Modular: n = 13,488). For monobloc implants, compared to implants with a cobalt chrome head and highly crosslinked polyethylene (HCLPE) cup, the all-cause risk of revision for monobloc acetabular implant was higher for patients with cobalt chrome (hazard rate at 10 years after surgery: 1.28 95% confidence intervals [1.10, 1.48]) or stainless steel head (1.18 [1.02, 1.36]) and non-HCLPE cup. The risk of revision was lower for patients with a delta ceramic head and HCLPE cup implant, at any postoperative period (1.18 [1.02, 1.36]). For modular implants, compared to patients with a cobalt chrome head and HCLPE liner primary THR, the all-cause risk of revision for modular acetabular implant varied non-constantly. THRs with a delta ceramic (0.79 [0.73, 0.85]) or oxidised zirconium (0.65 [0.55, 0.77]) head and HCLPE liner had a lower risk of revision throughout the entire postoperative period. Similar results were found when investigating the indication-specific risks of revision for both the monobloc and modular acetabular implants. While this large, nonselective analysis is the first to adjust for numerous characteristics collected in the registry, residual confounding cannot be rule out., Conclusions: Prosthesis revision is influenced by the prosthesis materials used in the primary procedure with the lowest risk for implants with delta ceramic or oxidised zirconium head and an HCLPE liner/cup. Waste management of persistent polymers such as polyolefins (PO) 1 still represents a major challenge, often leading to material loss from the value chain and contributing to plastic pollution. This study investigated an integrated process to valorize PO pyrolysis side stream. PO wax was recovered and used as a feedstock for a microbial bioconversion process. A modified emulsification protocol (using two-surfactants system) allowed the successful dispersion and bioconversion of PO wax without the need of the extra oxidation step. Enrichment of plastic landfill inocula allowed to develop efficient mixed microbial consortia (MMC) able to grow on PO wax. Adaptive laboratory evolution improved 4 times cell growth, leading to 2.6-17.3 times shorter lag phase. The bioconversion process using the adapted MMC was performed in a 2 L-bioreactor with PO wax-emulsified media (10 g L -1 ) at neutral pH and 20% pO 2 . 87% of substrate was consumed within 12 h and complete consumption was achieved within 48 h (4 times faster than previously reported). A maximum of 2.95 g CDW L -1 of biomass was produced, while the intracellular triglycerides reached a maximum of 105.5 mg L -1 at 30 h. Moreover, the conversion of PO wax into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) was demonstrated and the production was maximized by statistical optimization. Maximum PHA titer of 384 0.1 mg L -1 was achieved, which represents a 1.5-17 times improvement from previous reports. Microplastics can accumulate in the excess sludge from wastewater treatment plants through domestic wastewater. This study investigated the co-pyrolysis behavior of sewage sludge coexisting with two types of microplastics (polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA)) and found a superior comprehensive pyrolysis performance. By calculating the difference between theoretical and experimental weight loss during the pyrolysis process, it was found that the incorporation of microplastics PE and PLA created a synergistic effect at 270°C-450 °C, which was confirmed through the Malek method analysis from a pyrolysis mechanism perspective that it could increase the random nuclei on each particle, that is, enhance the heterogeneous diffusion of volatiles. The average activation energy was reduced by 84.99 kJ/mol, as determined using three isoconversional methods: Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Starink. Regarding the products, the aforementioned synergistic effect led to a reduction in char retention and larger specific surface area of the biochar, while the quantities of gaseous products and bio-oil escalated. Through a thermogravimetric analyzer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), an increase in aromatic hydrocarbons, alkanes, aldehydes, ethers, and esters in the gaseous products were detected. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) revealed an increase in hydrocarbons, esters, and alcohols in the bio-oil, and acids and aldehydes decreased, overall enhancing the quality of the bio-oil. Indonesia generates approximately 7.8 million tons of plastic waste annually, which 4.9 million tons is mismanaged. Presently, there is significant concern on microplastics (MPs) pollution in aquatic environment. The research on the prevalence of MPs in river systems are comparatively lower than the studies conducted on marine systems. The primary goal of this research was to look into the prevalence of MPs in the river water of Mahakam of Tenggarong City, Indonesia. To adequately represent this area, a meticulous selection method was used to find five separate sampling locations, with two stations at each location, positioned 200 m apart on opposite sides of the river. According to the study's findings, MPs has been observed in the range of 19.2 ± 1.8 to 58.5 ± 3.5 particles/l. Based on the MPs type, fragments (43.4 %) were the most common type of MPs found in water samples. Furthermore, 44.6 % of the MPs had size smaller than 1000 μm. The prevalent hues observed in the water samples were transparent and black, composing 75.6 % of overall formation. Most studies assessing the effects of microplastics (MPs) on freshwater ecosystems use reference materials of a certain size, shape, and polymer type. However, in the environment, aquatic organisms are exposed to a mixture of different polymers with different sizes and shapes, resulting in different bioaccessible fractions and effects. This study assesses the fate and effects of an environmentally relevant mixture of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) fragments, polypropylene (PP) fragments, and polyester (PES) fibres in indoor freshwater microcosms over 28 days. The MP mixture contained common polymers found in freshwater ecosystems, had a size range between 50 and 3887 µm, and was artificially aged using a mercury lamp. The invertebrate species included in the microcosms, Lymnea stagnalis (snail) and Lumbriculus variegatus (worm), were exposed to four MP concentrations: 0.01, 0.05, 0.1 and 1 % of sediment dry weight. MPs fate was assessed by performing a balance of the MPs in the surface water, water column, and sediment after a stabilization period and at the end of the experiment. Sedimentation rates per day were calculated (2.13 % for PES, 1.46 % for HDPE, 1.87 % for PP). The maximum size of MPs taken up by the two species was determined and compared to the added mixture and their mouth size. The size range taken up by L. variegatus was smaller than L. stagnalis and significantly different from the size range in the added mixture. The No Observed Effect Concentrations (NOECs) for the reproduction factor of L. variegatus and the number of egg clutches produced by L. stagnalis were 0.01 % and 0.1 % sediment dry weight, respectively. The EC10 and EC50 for the same endpoint for L. stagnalis were 0.25 % and 0.52 %, respectively. Background: In a previous study we have shown that a cemented vitamin E-doped highly cross-linked polyethylene (VEPE) compared to a conventional polyethylene cup in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has a slightly higher proximal migration but significantly lower wear rates up to 2 years after surgery. In this follow-up study we investigated the same cohort at 6 years., Methods: This was a double-blinded, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial on patients with osteoarthritis, with a mean age of 66 years. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either the conventional polyethylene cup or the VEPE cup in a 1:1 ratio. The primary endpoint was proximal implant migration of the cup measured with radiostereometric analysis (RSA). Secondary endpoints included wear rate of the cup and patient-reported outcome measurements (PROM)., Results: At the 6-year follow-up, 25 patients (11 controls, 14 VEPE) were available for RSA measurements, and we found no statistically significant difference in proximal migration between the VEPE and control groups. The wear rate was significantly lower in the VEPE group compared to controls, 0.03 mm/year and 0.07 mm/year, respectively with a mean difference 0.04 mm, (95% CI, 0.02-0.06 mm). There were no cup revisions and no difference in PROM between the groups., Conclusions: Based on our 6-year results, the VEPE group exhibited no statistical or clinically relevant difference compared to the control group, and the wear rate was significantly lower in the VEPE group. The rate limiting stage is char reactivity during gasification that can be influenced by its physicochemical structural characteristics. In this study, the effects of feedstock share, rice straw (RS) and polyethylene (PE), on the physicochemical properties and gasification reactivity of chars were investigated and their relationships were discussed. The char gasification reactivity was investigated via isothermal experiments using a thermal analyzer. The results indicated that the PE addition improved the specific surface area (SSA) and pore volume (V p ) of the char obtained from co-pyrolysis RS with PE. The SSA of the char increased by 1.31 times when the PE content was 60 wt%, compared with that of RS char. The order degree and gasification reactivity of the co-pyrolysis char samples increased with increasing PE content beyond 40 wt%. The char reactivity in the early stage of co-gasification was primarily determined by the order degree of carbonaceous and pore structure. Introduction: The inelasticity of ceramic bearings might affect primary stability and migration of implants in press-fit total hip arthroplasty (THA). This randomised controlled trial compares migration patterns of the uncemented Delta-TT cup and H-MAX S stem between ceramic and polyethylene liners, up to 5 years follow-up., Methods: Patients receiving primary press-fit THA were randomly allocated to a ceramic ( n   =  28) or polyethylene ( n   =  25) liner. Migration was measured using model-based radiostereometric analysis (RSA) at baseline and 1.5, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 60 months postoperatively and compared between groups using mixed models statistical analysis. The focus of this study is on the 2- to 5-year migration of the Delta-TT cup and migration during complete follow-up of the H-MAX S stem up to 5-years., Results: At 5-year follow-up, mean (95% CI) proximal cup translation was 0.56 (0.37-0.74) mm in ceramic and 0.58 (0.25-0.90) mm in polyethylene ( p   =  0.729). The mean change in adduction was 1.05° (0.27-1.82°) in ceramic and 0.78° (-0.16-1.71°) in polyethylene. Mixed modelling showed that all between-group effects were ⩽0.20 mm for translation and ⩽0.22° for rotation at 5 years postoperatively ( p  ⩾ 0.23). Mean cup migration between 2 and 5 years was limited (all parameters <0.17 mm and <0.30°). At 5-year follow-up, mean stem subsidence was 2.09 mm (0.89-3.29 mm) in ceramic and 2.55 (0.97-4.12) mm in polyethylene. The mean change in internal rotation was 3.69° (1.98-5.40°) in ceramic and 4.01° (2.20-5.81°) in polyethylene. Most stem migration occurred up to 1.5 months, stabilising afterwards. All between-group effects were ⩽0.75 mm for translations and ⩽1.41° for rotations ( p  ⩾ 0.26)., Conclusions: 5-year migration patterns of press-fit cups and stems were similar between ceramic and polyethylene liners. Micro- and nanoplastics (MNP) have recently received particular attention in freshwater and marine ecosystems, but less is known about their impact on terrestrial species. Ants can be used as biological indicators for many types of pollutants and are therefore a good candidate to explore the effects of MNP pollution. In the present study, we investigated the ability of workers from seven colonies of the acrobat ant Crematogaster scutellaris to detect MNP in their food. After two days of starvation, groups of ten ants were tested for their preference toward control and polyethylene-treated solutions. Every 5 min over a total 20 min period, the number of workers feeding on either solution was counted. The results showed that C. scutellaris workers could detect and avoid contaminated food, feeding more often on the uncontaminated solution in the first 10 min. However, after 10 min the food preference was no longer significant between the groups, likely owing to feeding satiation. We then assessed whether this feeding behaviour is sufficient to cause the accumulation of MNP in the ant. We thereby provided a solution containing fluorescent MNP (fMNP) at the same concentration as in the previous experiments. Observation of the ants' mouthparts using fluorescent light microscopy showed that after 10 min dense aggregations of fMNP were visible. Further investigations are needed to understand the mechanisms of detection of MNP by ants, and the accumulation dynamics in ants' bodies. Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) combine the properties of plastics and lignocellulosic fillers. A particular limitation in their use is usually a hydrophobic, poorly wettable surface. The surface properties of materials can be modified using ion implantation. The research involved using composites based on polyethylene (PE) filled with sawdust or bark (40%, 50%, and 60%). Their surfaces were modified by argon ion implantation in three fluencies (1 × 10 15 , 1 × 10 16 , and 1 × 10 17 cm -2 ) at an accelerating voltage of 60 kV. Changes in the wettability, surface energy, and surface colour of the WPCs were analysed. It was shown that argon ion implantation affects the distinct colour change in the WPC surface. The nature of the colour changes depends on the filler used. Implantation also affects the colour balance between the individual variants. Implantation of the WPC surface with argon ions resulted in a decrease in the wetting angle. In most of the variants tested, the most significant effect on the wetting angle changes was the ion fluence of 1 × 10 17 cm -2 . Implantation of the WPC surface also increased the surface free energy of the composites. The highest surface free energy values were also recorded for the argon ion fluence of 1 × 10 17 cm -2 .

While plastics provide convenience, they also endanger the safety of the natural environment. Microplastic pollution caused by plastic aging has become an urgent concern in public places. In order to study the effects of microplastics on soil physical properties, the electrical resistance and thermal conductivity of soils containing different polyethylene and moisture content were tested. The results show that polyethylene have two effects on soil electrical resistance: one is that the plastic particles increase electrical resistance, and the other is that the electrostatic field carried by the plastic particles reduces electrical resistance. The effect of the two factors is balanced by the content of polyethylene at 6-8%. When the polyethylene content of the soil was 6% and 10%, the coefficients of electrical resistance variation were 0.89, 0.67, 0.85, 0.96, 0.97, 0.99 and 0.95, 0.68, 0.71, 0.93, 0.95, 0.96, respectively. Polyethylene alters soil properties by affecting water distribution through hydrophobicity. The water content gradually increases to 10%, the liquid conduction area inside the soil increases, and the higher the soil's ability to conduct electricity and heat. Background: Modern literature has brought into question if wear of tibial inserts made from conventional or highly crosslinked polyethylene (HXL PE) is still a factor limiting longevity of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the mid- to long-term. It is the objective of this study to determine: 1) most common causes of mid- to long-term TKA failure, 2) the prevalence of delamination, and 3) the medial/lateral linear wear rates of conventional and HXL PE tibial inserts retrieved in the mid- to long-term., Methods: A tibial insert retrieval cohort of 107 inserts (79 conventional, 28 HXL PE) with a minimum time in situ of 6.5 years (mean 11.7 ± 4) was studied. Failure causes were determined from chart-review, delamination presence was assessed microscopically, and medial/lateral linear wear was determined by minimal thickness changes measured with a dial-indicator., Results: The most common mid-to long-term etiologies for failure were instability (44.9%), PE wear 15%), aseptic loosening (14%), and infection (13.1%). Delamination occurred in 70% of inserts (72.1% conventional, 64.3% HXLPE). Gross material loss due to delamination appeared to be the underlying reason for at least 33.3% of cases exhibiting instability. Of the cases removed for infection, 75% exhibited no histopathological hallmarks of acute infection. The medial/lateral wear rates were 0.054/0.051 (conventional) and 0.014/0.011 (HXL) mm/y, respectively., Conclusions: Polyethylene wear still appears to be a major primary and secondary cause for TKA revision in the mid- to long-term. Introduction: Microplastic pollution has emerged as a significant global change factor, with the potential to alter the biological, physicochemical properties of soil and to subsequently affect plant growth. Despite growing recognition of the impacts of microplastic pollution, the mechanisms by which microplastics modify plant leaf chemistry and influence allelopathic interactions among co-existing plant species remain unclear., Methods: We used the native perennial forb Achyranthes bidentata and the invasive annual forb Amaranthus spinosus as focal species. We grew the two species with and without competition with each other. This setup was further combined with a treatment involving the addition of polyethylene (PE). We then testd the effects of aqueous extract on seed germination and seedling growth for five invasive and five native species. Subsequently, metabolomic analysis was conducted on the aqueous extracts, in which significant allelopathic effects were observed on test species., Results and Discussion: The presence of PE microplastics enhanced the biomass of both Achyranthes and Amaranthus under competitive and non-competitive growth conditions. Furthermore, PE microplastics were found to induce a negative allelopathic effect for the native plant Achyranthes on co-occurring plants, which appeared to be mediated through changes in leaf chemistry. Bisdemethoxycurcumin, ethylparaben, salicin 6'-sulfate and 5-hydroxy-3',4',7-trimethoxyflavone glucoside were proven important compounds for allelopathic enhancement. Overall, these results suggest that microplastic pollution has the capability to influence the co-existence of invasive and native plants by altering their allelopathic potential. This insight into the interactions between microplastics and plant allelopathy provides a novel perspective on how microplastic pollution could modify plant species interactions and ecosystem dynamics. Plastics are used widely in almost every field of life, but their synthetic and persistent nature makes them harmful for the environment. The aim of this research was to evaluate the degradation abilities of Aspergillus niger , Candida albicans , and Acremonium sclerotigenum on microplastics (MPs). MP pieces of 4 ± 1 mm, including polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene, were incubated with fungal inoculums for 30 days. The degradation of treated MPs was determined by biofilm formation, weight loss, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform analyses. The results indicated that the polyethylene MPs treated with Aspergillus niger exhibited the highest level of biofilm formation (optical density 1.595) and percentage weight loss (16%). In the case of polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene MPs, Acremonium sclerotigenum and co-culture showed weight loss of 6% and 10%, respectively. Candida albicans was observed to be the least effective in biodegradation analyses. SEM observation revealed the surface modifications as holes, pits, cracks, and increased roughness in treated MPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the chemical structure of each polymer exhibited some variations. Polyolefins such as polyethylenes and polypropylenes are the most-produced plastic waste globally, yet are difficult to convert into useful products due to their unreactivity. Pyrolysis is a practical method for large-scale treatment of mixed, contaminated plastic, allowing for their conversion into industrially-relevant petrochemicals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), despite their tremendous utility in heterogeneous catalysis, have been overlooked for polyolefin depolymerization due to their perceived thermal instabilities and inability of polyethylenes and polypropylenes to penetrate their pores. Herein, we demonstrate the viability of UiO-66 MOFs containing coordinatively-unsaturated zirconium nodes, as effective catalysts for pyrolysis that significantly enhances the yields of valuable liquid and gas hydrocarbons, whilst halving the amounts of residual solids produced. Reactions occur on the Lewis-acidic UiO-66 nodes, without the need for noble metals, and yield aliphatic product distributions distinctly different from the aromatic-rich hydrocarbons that can be obtained from zeolite catalysis. We also demonstrate the first unambiguous characterization of polyolefin penetration into UiO-66 pores at pyrolytic temperatures, allowing access to the abundant Zr-oxo nodes within the MOF interior for efficient C-C cleavage. Aim: To compare the exposure rate, infection rate, percentage of enhancement, and success rate between Medpor and the three-dimensional printed polyethylene (3DP-PE) orbital implant in a preliminary report., Methods: This prospective, randomized, equivalence, controlled trial was conducted at two institutes. The equivalent margin was ±10%. The sample size for the equivalence trial was 174 participants per group. Patients who were eligible for enucleations received either Medpor or 3DP-PE implants based on a randomized block of six. The surgeries were performed by five oculoplastic surgeons. The assessor and patients were masked. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the orbit was performed at least 6mo after operation and the fibrovascular ingrowth was analyzed using the Image J software. Follow-up continued at least 1y after surgery. The intention to treat and per protocol approaches were used., Results: Totally 128 patients met the criteria in the report. Fifty Medpor and 55 3DP-PE cases completed the trial. The most common cause of blindness was trauma. The mean follow-up times of Medpor and 3DP-PE were 33 and 40mo respectively. The exposure rate was not statistically significant between two groups (6.0% and 7.3%), P <0.05, 95%CI (-9.8%, +12.0%). The success rates were 94% (Medpor) and 92.7% (3DP-PE). No postoperative infection was reported. Nine patients had MRI tests and two had implant exposures with 66.3% enhancement at 75mo (Medpor) and 58% enhancement at 57mo (3DP-PE) postoperatively., Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference in exposure rate and success rate between Medpor and 3DP-PE in enucleation in the report. However, we cannot conclude that they are equivalent in terms of the exposure rate and success rate because the 95%CI is wider than ±10%. Physico-chemical properties of microplastics (MPs) change during weathering in the environment. There is a lack of knowledge about the effects of such environmentally relevant MPs on organisms. We investigated: 1) the physico-chemical changes of MPs due to UV-VIS weathering, and 2) compared the effect of pristine and aged MPs on the behaviour of the water flea Daphnia magna and terrestrial crustacean Porcellio scaber. Dry powders of MPs were produced from widely used polymer types: disposable three-layer polypropylene (PP) medical masks (inner, middle and outer), polyester textile fibres, car tires and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) bags and were subjected to accelerated ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) ageing. Our results show that the extent of transformation depends on the type of polymer, with PP showing the most changes, followed by LDPE, textile fibres and tire particles. Obvious fragmentation was observed in PP and textile fibres. In the case of PP, but not polyester textile fibres, changes in FTIR spectra and surface properties were observed. Tire particles and LDPE did not change in size, but clear changes were observed in their FTIR spectra. Most MPs, aged and pristine, did not affect the swimming of daphnids. The only effect observed was a significant increase in path length and swimming speed for the pristine tire particles when the recording was done with particles remaining in the wells. After transfer to a clean medium, this effect was no longer present, suggesting a physical rather than chemical effect. Similarly, woodlice showed no significant avoidance response to the MPs tested, although there was a noticeable trend to avoid soils contaminated with pristine polyester textile fibers and preference towards the soils contaminated with aged MP of the middle mask layer. Microplastics (MPs) affect the carbon cycle in coastal salt marsh soils. However, studies on their effects on CHCl 3 and CHBr 3 , which are volatile halohydrocarbons that can damage the ozone layer, are lacking. In this study, indoor simulation experiments were conducted to explore the effects of MPs invasion on the source and sink characteristics of soil CHCl 3 and CHBr 3 . The results showed that different concentrations of polyethylene (PE)-MPs promoted CHCl 3 and CHBr 3 emissions. Emission peaks of the two gases appeared on days 3 and 15 during the culture cycle. CHCl 3 and CHBr 3 fluxes were mainly affected by soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities. PE-MPs caused changes in soil properties, microorganisms, and related functional genes. Soil total organic carbon, which was significantly and positively correlated with CHCl 3 . Dissolved organic matter, which was one of the main factors affecting CHBr 3 , its relative content increased after the addition of PE-MPs. The abundances of Methylocella and Dehalococcoides, which mediate dechlorination reduction, decreased with the addition of PE-MPs. The addition of PE-MPs also significantly varied the abundance of ctrA, which controls dechlorination in soil microorganisms. The gene pceA greatly influenced CHCl 3 emissions. In addition, CHBr 3 flux was influenced by the interactions between sediment redox and microbial co-metabolic reactions under the control of genes such as TC.FEV.OM and soxB. Interstitial meiofauna, organisms smaller than 500 μm that live between sediment grains, are the most abundant animals on Earth. They play crucial roles in biogeochemical cycles, but their responses to microplastics (MPs) remain understudied. Due to their size, meiofauna may be particularly vulnerable to MPs. We quantified how realistic levels of MP contamination affect bioturbation, oxygen penetration depth (OPD), and diffusive oxygen uptake (DOU) in sediment mesocosms over thirteen days. Bioturbation depth and OPD increased, while DOU decreased across all treatments. However, sediments containing MPs had lower bioturbation depth and slightly higher OPD compared to controls. The reduction in bioturbation was likely due to meiofauna stress, while the highest MP contamination caused increased bioturbation depth, likely due to evasion responses. Increased OPD over time was likely due to reduced labile organic matter. Background: This retrospective study compares the outcomes of unicompartmental medial fixed-bearing knee arthroplasty (mUKA), involving a cemented metal-backed (MB) or an all-polyethylene (AP) tibial component, performed in obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) > 30 with a follow-up of at least 5 years., Methods: The institutional database was mined for primary mUKAs involving an MB or an AP tibial component (MB-UKA and AP-UKA groups, respectively) performed from January 2015 to August 2019. Patient demographics and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were compared and a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis (1:1) using multiple variables was conducted., Results: PSM analysis yielded 37 pairs of obese MB-UKA and AP-UKA patients. At 5 years, the Knee Society Function Score (KSFS) was 75.1 ± 10.6 in MB-UKA and 79.4 ± 9.1 in AP-UKA patients (p = 0.029), and the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) was 38.1 ± 4.4 in MB-UKA and 40.6 ± 5.7 in AP-UKA patients (p = 0.011)., Conclusion: At five-year follow-up, in a matched group of obese MB-UKA and AP-UKA patients, the AP-UKA group achieved better KSFSs and OKSs. Background: Microplastics (MPs), plastic particles < 5 mm in size, are prevalent in the environment, and human exposure to them is inevitable. To assess the potential risk of MPs on human health, it is essential to consider the physicochemical properties of environmental MPs, including polymer types, size, shape, and surface chemical modifications. Notably, environmental MPs undergo degradation due to external factors such as ultraviolet (UV) rays and waves, leading to changes in their surface characteristics. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the health effects of MPs, with a specific focus on their surface degradation. This study concentrates on cytotoxic MPs with surface degradation through UV irradiation, aiming to identify the mechanisms underlying their cell toxicity., Results: Polyethylene (PE) and surface-degraded PE achieved through UV light irradiation were employed as model MPs in this study. We explored the impact of PE and degraded PE on cell death in murine macrophage cell line RAW264.7 cells and human monocyte cell line THP-1 cells. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that degraded PE induced programmed cell death without activating caspase 3, while non-degraded PE did not trigger programmed cell death. These findings suggest that degraded PE might induce programmed cell death through mechanisms other than caspase-driven apoptosis. To understand the mechanisms of cell death, we investigated how cells responded to degraded PE-induced cellular stress. Immunofluorescence and western blotting analyses demonstrated that degraded PE induced autophagosome formation and increased p62 expression, indicating inhibited autophagy flux after exposure to degraded PE. Furthermore, degraded PE exposure led to a decrease in acidic lysosomes, indicating lysosomal dysregulation. These results imply that degraded PE induces lysosomal dysfunction, subsequently causing autophagy dysregulation and cell death., Conclusions: This study unveils that UV-induced degradation of PE results in cell death attributed to lysosomal dysfunction. This study investigated the impacts of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) with varying particle sizes (13 μm and 6.5 μm) on the growth and antioxidant responses of two freshwater algae species, Oscillatoria princeps (O. princeps) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa). The results revealed a significant reduction in chlorophyll a content in both algal species upon exposure to PE-MPs, indicating a disruption of photosynthesis. Furthermore, Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity decreased in O. princeps, while Catalase (CAT) activity increased in both species, indicating complex physiological responses to microplastic stress. Notably, phycotoxin levels in O. princeps decreased with PE-MP exposure, while those in C. pyrenoidosa increased, particularly with 6.5 μm PE-MPs. These findings underscore the potential toxic effects of PE-MPs on freshwater algal growth and metabolism, as well as their influence on toxin production. Alongside the concerns of waste management, plastic production represents a future problem for managing greenhouse gas emissions. Advanced recycling and bio-based production are paramount to face this challenge. The sustainability of bio-based polyethylene (bioPE) depends on the feedstock, avoiding stress on natural resources. This work discusses Brazil's potential to meet future global bioPE demand by 2050, using sugarcane as feedstock and considering environmental sustainability for production expansion. From the assessed 35.6 Mha, 3.55 Mha would be exempt from trade-offs related to land use change (dLUC), biodiversity, and water availability. The scenario with the highest circularity efficiency would require 22.2 Mha to meet the global demand, which can be accommodated in areas with positive impacts in carbon stocks, neutral impacts in water availability, and medium impacts on biodiversity. Background and Purpose:  In contemporary total hip replacement (THR), dislocation is one of the most common complications. At our institution, the cause of an increase in the dislocation rate was recently reported to be reduced head coverage of a newly introduced neutral liner. We therefore aimed to ascertain whether differences exist in articulating head coverage between the various neutral liners used in contemporary THR. A secondary aim was to utilize coverage measurements to develop a new liner coverage classification., Methods:  The articulating head coverage of 25 modular neutral polyethylene liners used in 6 uncemented cup designs from 4 major manufacturers was evaluated. The measurements were performed in a metrology laboratory and a mathematical model was developed to calculate coverage of the articulating surfaces. Further, 1 "elevated rim" liner and 1 "face changing liner" were included to develop a new liner coverage classification., Results:  The articulating head coverage among the studied liners ranged from 167.7° to 194.8°, corresponding to a variation of 27.1°. The variations with different cup and head sizes within each design were smaller (from 1.0° to 5.6°) than those between different designs. Each of the liner designs offered distinct coverage, even though they were all classified as neutral. Based on measurements, a set of descriptive parameters to discriminate different liners in terms of coverage was created., Conclusion:  We showed that all neutral liners are not equal - instead, they clearly varied in terms of their actual coverage design. We suggest our set of descriptive parameters called "hemispheric coverage index values" be used in discriminating the differences in liner coverage.

The increasing awareness of the potential health risks associated with microplastics' (MPs) and nanoplastics' (NPs) presence in the environment has led to a significant rise in research focused on these particles over the past few years. This review focuses on the research on MPs'/NPs' presence and spread, pathways of exposure, toxicological effects on human health and legal framework related to MP/NP challenges. Several research projects have aimed to assess their potential harm to human health, focusing on different systems and organs. After exposure (independent of the pathway), these hazards reach the blood stream and concentrate in different organs. Further, they are responsible for harmful changes, having an immediate effect (pain, inflammation, or hormone imbalance) or lead to a long-term disease (e.g., infertility, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or cancer). Toxicological effects have been noticed at high concentrations of MPs, specifically polystyrene, the most widespread typical MP, but only short-term effects have been mostly studied. Significant quantities of consumed MPs have been discovered to have diverse detrimental effects, posing a threat to human welfare. The exact concentrations of microplastics that are inhaled and swallowed and then build up in the human body are still not known. Further investigation is necessary to evaluate the impact of MP/NP contamination at minimal concentrations and for prolonged durations.

The widespread presence of microplastics in the environment has raised significant concerns regarding their potential impact on human and animal health. Among various microplastic types, polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) are particularly prevalent due to the extensive use in packaging and consumer products. Exploring the uncharted therapeutic potentials of naringin, this study delves into its mitigating effects on disruptions in kallikrein-3 levels, steroidal-thyroidal hormone balance, and antioxidant defense triggered by PE-MPs exposure, paving the way for novel interventions in environmental toxin-induced endocrine and oxidative stress disorders. Male Wistar rats (n = 24) were randomly grouped into four: Control, PE-MPs (1.5 mg/kg), PE-MPs + NAR (1.5 mg/kg PE-MPs + 100 mg/kg NAR), and NAR (100 mg/kg). Hormonal and antioxidant parameters were assessed after 28 days of exposure. PE-MPs exposure caused a significant increase(p < 0.005) in the level of kallikrein-3 (KLK-3) while it significantly reduces the levels of testosterone (TST), luteinizing hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and Free-triiodothyronine (fT3) and Total cholesterol (TChol) concentration. PE-MPs exposure also disrupted significantly (p < 0.005) antioxidant profile by down-regulating the activities of glutathione-S-transferase, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reducing levels of glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AA) while concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were increased relative to control. However, the mitigating potentials of naringin on disruptions in hormonal and antioxidant profiles caused by PE-MPs exposure were demonstrated, as NAR normalized KLK-3, steroid, and thyroid hormone levels, cholesterol concentration, and enhanced antioxidant defense. Micro- and nano-plastics (MPs/NPs) have emerged as a global pollutant, yet their impact on the root environment of plants remains scarcely explored. Given the widespread pollution of phthalate esters (PAEs) in the environment due to the application of plastic products, the co-occurrence of MPs/NPs and PAEs could potentially threaten the growth medium of plants. This study examined the combined effects of polystyrene (PS) MPs/NPs and PAEs, specifically dibutyl phthalate and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, on the chemical properties and microbial communities in a wheat growth medium. It was observed that the co-pollution with MPs/NPs and PAEs significantly increased the levels of oxalic acid, formic acid, and total organic carbon (TOC), enhanced microbial activity, and promoted the indigenous input and humification of dissolved organic matter, while slightly reducing the pH of the medium solution. Although changes in chemical indices were primarily attributed to the addition of PAEs, no interaction between PS MPs/NPs and PAEs was detected. High-throughput sequencing revealed no significant change in microbial diversity within the media containing both PS MPs/NPs and PAEs compared to the media with PS MPs/NPs alone. However, alterations in energy and carbohydrate metabolism were noted. Proteobacteria dominated the bacterial communities in the medium solution across all treatment groups, followed by Bacteroidetes and Verrucomicrobia. The composition and structure of these microbial communities varied with the particle size of the PS in both single and combined treatments. Moreover, variations in TOC, oxalic acid, and formic acid significantly influenced the bacterial community composition in the medium, suggesting they could modulate the abundance of dominant bacteria to counteract the stress from exogenous pollutants. Mulching films, widely used in agriculture, are a large source of microplastics (MPs) to soil. However, there is little knowledge on the long-term effects of agricultural MPs on soil invertebrates. We investigated the effects of MPs from conventional non-biodegradable, fossil-based, low-density polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable fossil-based poly(butylene adipate-coterephthalate) (starch-PBAT blend) mulching films on two generations of the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. No effects of MPs (0.005 %-5 %, w/w dry food) on mealworm development and survival were observed until the end of the experiments (12 weeks for the first generation, nine weeks for the second generation), but effects on their moulting and growth were observed. These were most evident for PE MPs (5 %, w/w), where a decrease in larval growth and moulting was noted in the first generation. On the contrary, PBAT MPs (5 %, w/w) significantly induced the growth of mealworms in the second generation. In addition, there was a non-significant trend towards increased growth at all other PBAT MP exposure concentrations. Increased growth is most likely due to the biodegradation of starch PBAT MPs by mealworms. Microplastics and metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) are environmental pollutants that have attracted significant attention. However, there have been relatively few studies on the combined pollution of these substances in the soil-plant system. To investigate the environmental impact and interaction mechanisms of these two pollutants, a pot experiment was conducted to examine the effects of soil exposure on peanut growth. The experiment results revealed that polyethylene (PE) had a minimal effect on peanut growth, while CuO NPs significantly inhibited peanut growth. Peanut biomass decreased by over 50 % in all Cu treatments. The presence of PE significantly impacted the dissolution and absorption of CuO NPs. When 0.5 % PE was present, the dissolution and transformation of CuO NPs were limited, resulting in a total Cu concentration of 458 mg/kg. Conversely, when 5 % PE was present, the dissolution and transformation of CuO NPs were promoted, leading to a DTPA-Cu concentration of 141 mg/kg, the highest level observed. The distribution of trace elements in peanut stems also responded to the differences in Cu concentration. Both pollutants significantly disrupted soil bacteria, with CuO NPs having a more pronounced effect than PE. Throughout the entire growth cycle of peanuts, no chemical adsorption occurred between PE and CuO NPs, and CuO NPs had no significant impact on the aging rate of PE. Orthopaedic surgeons hold differing opinions on replacing the patella during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for knee osteoarthritis, sparking a continued discussion on the optimal approach. Patellar resurfacing (PR) replaces the patella's surface with a prosthetic component, aiming to enhance joint function and reduce anterior knee pain. However, it has potential complications such as avascular necrosis, fractures, and patellar clunk syndrome. This analysis evaluates the effectiveness of TKA with and without PR, highlighting the variations in outcomes between the two methods. Findings suggest that resurfacing is associated with improved clinical outcomes, activity level, patient satisfaction, and pain relief. Nevertheless, the decision should be individualized based on patient preferences and circumstances. The microplastics (MPs) vector effect of environmental contaminants (such as polychlorinated biphenyls-PCBs) to organism tissues is currently one of the major concerns regarding MPs pollution in the marine environment. The relative importance of MPs as vectors for the bioaccumulation of contaminants to marine organisms compared to other naturally occurring particles has been poorly investigated and never by using biofilm-covered particles. The present study compares the role of biofilm-covered microplastics and sand particles as vectors for the transfer and bioaccumulation of ¹⁴C-PCB-153 into various body compartments of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. After 14 days of exposure, similar transfer efficiency of ¹⁴C-PCB-153 from both types of biofilm-covered particles was obtained (t-test, p-val = 0.43). The particle type was not found to affect the concentration (two-way ANOVA, p-val per dry weight = 0.92, p-val per lipid weight = 0.80) and distribution (two-way ANOVA, p-val = 0.85) of ¹⁴C-PCB-153 among the different body compartments of sea urchins. These findings suggest that biofilm-covered MPs located on the seafloor may act as similar vectors for the bioaccumulation of PCB-153 in sea urchin tissues compared to other biofouled natural particles such as sand. Microplastics (MPs) pollution in freshwater poses a risk to various ecosystems and health security. In 2018, the Chinese government banned fishing since 2018 in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), but the fate and risk of MPs in wild fish remain unclear. Therefore, a detailed investigation was conducted into the occurrence of MPs in 18 wild fish species in the TGR using a Micro Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, and the trophic transfer and risks were assessed. MPs in fish were aged, with abundances ranging from 0.68 ± 0.98 to 4.00 ± 2.12 items/individual. Most particles were less than 1 mm in size (73.4 %), with fibers being the dominant shape (48.9 %) and transparent as the dominant color (35 %). Polyethylene (PE) was the most prevalent type. The bioconcentration factor (BCF), bioaccumulation factor (BAF), trophic magnification factor (TMF) and polymer hazard index (PHI) were low, suggesting no trophic transfer and a low risk of MPs. The BAF may provide a more reasonable description of the degree of enrichment of MPs, and 'items/individual' or 'g/individual' can be used to describe MPs concentrations in fish. The accumulation of polyethylene microplastic (PE-MPs) in soil can significantly impact plant quality and yield, as well as affect human health and food chain cycles. Therefore, developing rapid and effective detection methods is crucial. In this study, traditional machine learning (ML) and H2O automated machine learning (H2O AutoML) were utilized to offer a powerful framework for detecting PE-MPs (0.1 %, 1 %, and 2 % by dry soil weight) and the co-contamination of PE-MPs and fomesafen (a common herbicide) in soil. The development of the framework was based on the results of the metabolic reprogramming of soybean plants. Our study stated that traditional ML exhibits lower accuracy due to the challenges associated with optimizing complex parameters. H2O AutoML can accurately distinguish between clean soil and contaminated soil. Notably, H2O AutoML can detect PE-MPs as low as 0.1 % (with 100 % accuracy) and co-contamination of PE-MPs and fomesafen (with 90 % accuracy) in soil. The VIP and SHAP analyses of the H2O AutoML showed that PE-MPs and the co-contamination of PE-MPs and fomesafen significantly interfered with the antioxidant system and energy regulation of soybean. Chemical grafting of low-density polyethylene film blended with ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (PE/EPDM) using styrene monomer followed by a sulfonation process was investigated. Different factors affecting the grafting process, such as monomer and initiator concentrations, time of reaction, and grafting temperature, were studied. Sulfonation of the grafted films was carried out using chlorosulfonic acid in dichloromethane. Characterization of the grafted and sulfonated films was performed using ATR-FTIR, SEM, TGA, and XRD instruments. The grafting was successfully performed in aqueous media using sodium bisulfite as initiator, reaching a grafting yield of 130% and an ion exchange capacity of 1.2 m eq /g. The removal of thorium ions from aqueous solution was studied using the obtained ion exchange films. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Th(IV) was 177.5 mg. g -1 (pH = 3, 298 K and 60 min). The potential of superworm to remove certain plastic polymers has recently been noted. In this study, aerobic bacterial strains were isolated from the gut of Zophobas morio larvae which were fed with polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) polymers. Strains P2 (Leminorella), P6 (Bacillus), P9 (Bacillus), and P5 (Citrobacter) were associated with the highest PS (2.7%), PP (1.3%), PET (1.1%), and PE (0.42%) weight loss after 28 days, respectively. Pretreatments including thermal treatment (80 °C for 10 days), weathering (4 months in the free environment), and nitric and sulfuric acids (1 N, 10 days) improved the degradation of PE (1.3%), PET (1.9%), PP (5.2%), and PS (8.3%) by the same strains, respectively. Further analyses on the PS degradation by Leminorella sp. P2 revealed acid pretreatment promoted the formation of the C = C, C = O, and O-H functional groups. Surface irregularities, as well as a 3.6-fold increase in surface roughness, were observed in the PS film subjected to biodegradation. The contact angle dropped from 98.4° to 42.2° following the biodegradation. Bacterial depolymerization was confirmed by the 8.7% and 3.4% reduction of Mn and Mw and the change in polydispersity from 1.65 to 1.75. The results suggest that Zophobas morio microbiota in combination with abiotic pretreatment can be considered for plastic waste management., (© 2024.
