The development of a tavorite structured K- transition metal (T M )- fluorophosphate, having earth-abundant Fe as the only T M , crystallizing in the orthorhombic crystal system and facilitating stable-cum-reversible electrochemical K-extraction/insertion, has been reported here. Synthesized using low-cost precursors, KFePO 4 F has also been found to be air-stable. Detailed information pertaining to the bonding/structure, including lattice site occupancy, have been obtained via diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and FTIR, with XPS, Mössbauer and ESR revealing the oxidation states and nature of Fe in the as-synthesized condition and upon being subjected to electrochemical potassiation/depotassiation. The electrochemical K-insertion/extraction, supported by reversible Fe-redox, leads to a reversible K-storage capacity of ~102 mAh/g (within 1.5-4.0 V), along with a 1 st cycle Coulombic efficiency (CE) of ~93 % (with CE>99.9 % from 2 nd cycle onwards). Ex-situ X-ray diffraction, as well as operando synchrotron diffraction during galvanostatic cycling, indicates reversible changes in peak positions upon electrochemical K-extraction/insertion, with no evidence for structural change. When used as cathode material in K-ion 'full' cell (with hard carbon-based anode), a discharge capacity of ~68 mAh/g, along with capacity retention of ~70 % after 50 cycles, has been obtained; which confirms that this newly-developed earth-abundant Fe-based potassium fluorophosphate can be utilized for potential application in sustainable battery chemistries, like K-ion batteries., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Cathode materials are usually the key to determining battery capacity, suitable cathode materials are an important prerequisite to meet the needs of large-scale energy storage systems in the future. Polyanionic compounds have significant advantages in metal ion storage, such as high operating voltage, excellent structural stability, safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness, and can be excellent cathode options for rechargeable metal-ion batteries. Although some polyanionic compounds have been commercialized, there are still some shortcomings in electronic conductivity, reversible specific capacity, and rate performance, which obviously limits the development of polyanionic compound cathodes in large-scale energy storage systems. Up to now, many strategies including structural design, ion doping, surface coating, and electrolyte optimization have been explored to improve the above defects. Based on the above contents, this paper briefly reviews the research progress and optimization strategies of typical polyanionic compound cathodes in the fields of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and other promising metal ion batteries (sodium ion batteries (SIBs), potassium ion batteries (PIBs), magnesium ion batteries (MIBs), calcium ion batteries (CIBs), zinc ion batteries (ZIBs), aluminum ion batteries (AIBs), etc.), aiming to provide a valuable reference for accelerating the commercial application of polyanionic compound cathodes in rechargeable battery systems., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

The development of cathode materials has always been one of the most crucial areas of research in the field of sodium-ion batteries. Sulfate-based polyanionic materials, known for their high working voltage characteristics, have received widespread attention. In this work, a fluoro-sulfate sodium-ion battery cathode material, Na 3 Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 F modified with carbon nanotubes, was developed using a low-temperature solid-state annealing method. This Na 3 Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 F cathode exhibits an exceptionally high voltage of 3.77 V, excellent discharge capacity (102 mAh/g at 0.1C), and good rate capability. This material broadens the research directions for cathode materials and holds promise as a foundation for the further development of high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Desolvation processes, though common in self-assembled biological structures, are rarely evidenced and utilized in the design of crystalline architectures. In this study, we introduce a novel approach using the [Mo 8 S 8 O 8 (OH) 8 (guest)] 2- complex, formed by the self-condensation of four [Mo V 2 O 2 S 2 ] 2- fragments around a guest unit (Mo VI O 6 H 4 or oxalate), as a chaotropic scaffold for crystallizing hybrid organic-inorganic systems with natural cyclodextrins. Our findings reveal that β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) facilitates the formation of host-guest complexes, while α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) induces the formation of a Kagome-type structure with significant voids. These new compounds were thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction (both powder and single-crystal), N 2 adsorption, elemental and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, solution studies using 1 H NMR titration and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) demonstrated pre-association of the building units in solution. The tribe-material is the key factor affecting the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Inorganic materials have higher heat resistance and stability than widely used organic materials. However, the weaker tribe-property limits the application of TENGs. Modulating surface roughness by changing particle shape and size is a simple way to increase performance for TENGs. Polyoxometalates (POMs) have unrivalled structural diversity and can self-assemble to form different nanostructures. In this study, we propose [{(NH 4 ) 42 [Mo 72 VI Mo 60 V O 372 (CH 3 COO) 30 (H 2 O) 72 ] ⋅ ca.300H 2 O ⋅ ca.CH 3 COONH 4 )}-Mo 132 ] and [{Na 8 K 14 (VO) 2 [{(Mo VI ) (Mo 5 VI O 21 )(H 2 O) 3 ]} 10 {(Mo VI )Mo 5 VI O 21 (H 2 O) 3 (SO 4 )} 2 {V IV O(H 2 O) 20 } {V IV O} 10 ({KSO 4 } 5 ) 2 ] ⋅ 150H 2 O)}-Mo 72 V 30 ] with blackberry structure which are cured and prepared into film by spin-coating technique, are used as positive tribe-materials for the first time in the field of TENGs. Keplerate-type POMs can form blackberry structures with higher dispersibility and flexibility, which can be used to control surface roughness by regulating the size of particles. The discovery proves that the particle size influences the surface roughness, which adjusts the output of TENGs. According to our findings, Mo 132 -h-TENG generates an output voltage of 29.3 V, an output charge of 8 Nc, which is 2-3 folds higher than Mo 132 -TENG, and a maximum power density of 6.25 mW ⋅ m -2 at 300 MΩ. Biocidal coatings are of great interest to the healthcare system. In this work, the biocidal activity of coatings based on a complex biocide containing polymer and inorganic active antibacterial components was studied. Silver oxide was distributed in a matrix of a positively charged interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC) of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) using ultrasonic dispersion, forming nanoparticles with an average size of 5-6 nm. The formed nanoparticles in the matrix are not subject to agglomeration and changes in morphology during storage. It was found that the inclusion of silver oxide in a positively charged IPEC allows a more than 4-fold increase in the effectiveness of the complex biocide against E. coli K12 in comparison with the biocidal effect of PDADMAC and IPEC. Polycation, IPEC, and the IPEC/Ag 2 O ternary complex form coatings on the glass surface due to electrostatic adsorption. Adhesive and cohesive forces in the resulting coatings were studied with micron-scale coatings using dynamometry. It was found that the stability of the coating is determined primarily by adhesive interactions. At the macro level, it is not possible to reliably identify the role of IPEC formation in adhesion. On the other hand, use of the optical tweezers method makes it possible to analyze macromolecules at the submicron scale and to evaluate the multiple increase in adhesive forces when forming a coating from IPEC compared to coatings from PDADMAC. Thus, the application of ternary IPEC/Ag 2 O complexes makes it possible to obtain coatings with increased antibacterial action and improved adhesive characteristics.

Prion diseases, also known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, are caused by the accumulation of abnormal isoforms of the prion protein (scrapie isoform of the prion protein, PrPSc) in the central nervous system. Many compounds with anti-prion activities have been found using in silico screening, in vitro models, persistently prion-infected cell models, and prion-infected rodent models. Some of these compounds include several types of polymers. Although the inhibition or removal of PrPSc production is the main target of therapy, the unique features of prions, namely protein aggregation and assembly accompanied by steric structural transformation, may require different strategies for the development of anti-prion drugs than those for conventional therapeutics targeting enzyme inhibition, agonist ligands, or modulation of signaling. In this paper, we first overview the history of the application of polymers to prion disease research. Next, we describe the characteristics of each type of polymer with anti-prion activity. Finally, we discuss the common features of these polymers. Although drug delivery of these polymers to the brain is a challenge, they are useful not only as leads for therapeutic drugs but also as tools to explore the structure of PrPSc and are indispensable for prion disease research., (© 2022. Na metal is a promising anode material for the preparation of next-generation high-energy-density sodium-ion batteries; however, the high reactivity of Na metal severely limits the choice of electrolyte. In addition, rapid charge-discharge battery systems require electrolytes with high Na-ion transport properties. Herein, we demonstrate a stable and high-rate sodium-metal battery enabled by a nonaqueous polyelectrolyte solution composed of a weakly coordinating polyanion-type Na salt, poly[(4-styrenesulfonyl)-(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide] (poly(NaSTFSI)) copolymerized with butyl acrylate, in a propylene carbonate solution. It was found that this concentrated polyelectrolyte solution exhibited a remarkably high Na-ion transference number ( t Na ) at 60 °C. Furthermore, the surface of the Na electrode was modified with polyanion chains anchored via the partial decomposition of the electrolyte. The surface-tethered polyanion layer effectively suppressed the subsequent decomposition of the electrolyte, thereby enabling stable Na deposition/dissolution cycling. Finally, an assembled sodium-metal battery with a Na PP = 0.9) and a high ionic conductivity (σ = 1.1 mS cm -1 ) at 60 °C. Furthermore, the surface of the Na electrode was modified with polyanion chains anchored via the partial decomposition of the electrolyte. The surface-tethered polyanion layer effectively suppressed the subsequent decomposition of the electrolyte, thereby enabling stable Na deposition/dissolution cycling. Finally, an assembled sodium-metal battery with a Na 0.44 MnO 2 cathode demonstrated an outstanding charge/discharge reversibility (Coulombic efficiency >99.8%) over 200 cycles while also exhibiting a high discharge rate (i.e., 45% capacity retention at 10 mA cm -2 ).

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a series of molecular metal compounds based on W and Mo elements, exhibiting excellent physical and chemical properties. POMs have been widely used in the fields of photoelectric materials, catalytic materials, and coordination chemistry. In recent years, POMs have emerged in the field of chemiresistive gas sensors. They can work as electron acceptors and improve the gas-sensing performance of traditional sensing materials by means of capturing electrons from semiconductors, separating electrons produced by light excitation or thermal excitation and delaying the recombination of electrons and holes. So far, the highest sensing sensitivity response of POMs-based chemiresistive gas sensor is 231 to 1 ppm NO 2 gas. In this review, an overview is investigated about how POMs have evolved as sensing materials in gas sensors. First, some POMs and POMs-based sensing materials in recent years are introduced and classified. After that, brief analyses for each kind of sensing materials are provided. Then we compare the reported POMs-based sensors in different sensing parameters. Finally, the future outlooks are discussed on the basis of the current developments. This work is the first comprehensive overview of POMs-based chemiresistive gas sensors. This work can provide valuable information for developing high-performance POMs-based gas sensors.

In this paper, a sensitive determination method for polyanion using a glucose oxidase (GOx) enzymatic reaction with ferricyanide ion is described. We previously reported that the GOx enzymatic reaction was significantly promoted by a cationic polymer of ε-poly-L-lysine (εPL), and the enzymatic reaction could be utilized for the determination of εPL. Generally, polycation stoichiometrically forms polyion complex with polyanion. Thus, it is expected that the promotion effect of εPL on the enzymatic reaction is interfered by polyanion, and the enzymatic reaction is also applicable to the determination of polyanion. Predictably, the promotion effect of εPL was stoichiometrically interfered by polyanions, such as polyvinyl sulfate and polyacrylate, and the interference effect allowed for the determination of the polyanions. The detection limit of polyanion was estimated to be ~ 0.3 μeq L -1 . Polyoxidometalates (POMs) exhibit a range of biological properties that can be exploited for a variety of therapeutic applications. However, their potential utility as antivirals has been largely overlooked in the ongoing efforts to identify safe, effective and robust therapeutic agents to combat COVID-19. We focus on decavanadate (V10), a paradigmatic member of the POM family, to highlight the utility of electrostatic forces as a means of disrupting molecular processes underlying the SARS-CoV-2 entry into the host cell. While the departure from the traditional lock-and-key approach to the rational drug design relies on less-specific and longer-range interactions, it may enhance the robustness of therapeutic agents by making them less sensitive to the viral mutations. Native mass spectrometry (MS) not only demonstrates the ability of V10 to associate with the receptor-binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, but also provides evidence that this association disrupts the protein binding to its host cell-surface receptor. Furthermore, V10 is also shown to be capable of binding to the polybasic furin cleavage site within the spike protein, which is likely to decrease the effectiveness of the proteolytic processing of the latter (a pre-requisite for the viral fusion with the host cell membrane). Although in vitro studies carried out with SARS-CoV-2 infected cells identify V10 cytotoxicity as a major factor limiting its utility as an antiviral agent, the collected data provide a compelling stimulus for continuing the search for effective, robust and safe therapeutics targeting the novel coronavirus among members of the POM family., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Background: Evidence of crosstalk between the complement and coagulation cascades exists, and dysregulation of either pathway can lead to serious thromboinflammatory events. Both the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the alternative pathway of complement interact with anionic surfaces, such as glycosaminoglycans. Hitherto, there is no evidence for a direct interaction of properdin (factor P [FP]), the only known positive regulator of complement, with coagulation factor XI (FXI) or activated FXI (FXIa)., Objectives: The aim was to investigate crosstalk between FP and the intrinsic pathway and the potential downstream consequences., Methods: Chromogenic assays were established to characterize autoactivation of FXI in the presence of dextran sulfate (DXS), enzyme kinetics of FXIa, and the downstream effects of FP on intrinsic pathway activity. Substrate specificity changes were investigated using SDS-PAGE and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was used to determine direct binding between FP and FXIa., Results/conclusions: We identified a novel interaction of FP with FXIa resulting in functional consequences. FP reduces activity of autoactivated FXIa toward S-2288. FXIa can cleave FP in the presence of DXS, demonstrated using SDS-PAGE, and confirmed by LC-MS. FXIa can cleave factor IX (FIX) and FP in the presence of DXS, determined by SDS-PAGE. DXS alone modulates FXIa activity, and this effect is further modulated by FP. We demonstrate that FXI and FXIa bind to FP with high affinity. Furthermore, FX activation downstream of FXIa cleavage of FIX is modulated by FP. This was attributed to a unique conduction phenomenon resulting from the faster diffusion of transiently solvated Li ions along the interconnected aggregates of polyanion chains. Amyloid aggregation, including aggregation and propagation of prion protein, is a key factor in numerous human diseases, so-called amyloidosis, with a very poor ability for treatment or prevention. The present work describes the effect of sulfated or sulfonated polymers (sodium dextran sulfate, polystyrene sulfonate, polyanethole sulfonate, and polyvinyl sulfate) on different stages of amyloidogenic conversion and aggregation of the prion protein, which is associated with prionopathies in humans and animals. All tested polymers turned out to induce amyloid conversion of the ovine prion protein. As suggested from molecular dynamics simulations, this effect probably arises from destabilization of the native prion protein structure by the polymers. Short polymers enhanced its further aggregation, whereas addition of high-molecular poly(styrene sulfonate) inhibited amyloid fibrils formation. According to the seeding experiments, the protein-polymer complexes formed after incubation with poly(styrene sulfonate) exhibited significantly lower amyloidogenic capacity compared with the control fibrils of the free prion protein. The cytotoxicity of soluble oligomers was completely inhibited by treatment with poly(styrene sulfonate). To summarize, sulfonated polymers are a promising platform for the formulation of a new class of anti-prion and anti-amyloidosis therapeutics.

Polymer coatings based on polycations represent a perspective class of protective antimicrobial coatings. Polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and its water-soluble complexes with sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) were studied by means of dynamic light-scattering, laser microelectrophoresis and turbidimetry. It was shown that addition of six mol.% of polyanion to polycation results in formation of interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC) that was stable towards phase separation in water-salt media with a concentration of salts (NaCl, CaCl 2 , Na 2 SO 4 , MgSO 4 ) up to 0.5 M. Most of the polyelectrolyte coatings are made by layer-by-layer deposition. The utilization of water-soluble IPEC for the direct deposition on the surface was studied. The coatings from the PDADMAC and the PSS/PDADMAC complex were formed on the surfaces of hydrophilic glass and hydrophobic polyvinylchloride. It was found that formation IPEC allows one to increase the stability of the coating towards wash-off with water in comparison to individual PDADMAC coating on both types of substrates. The visualization of the coatings was performed by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Mg 3- x Ga 1+ x Ir ( x = 0.05) was synthesized by direct reaction of the elements in welded tantalum containers at 1200 °C and subsequent annealing at 500 °C for 30 days. Its crystal structure represents a new prototype and was determined by single-crystal technique as follows: space group P 6 3 / mcm , Pearson symbol hP 90, Z = 18, a = 14.4970(3) Å, c = 8.8638(3) Å. The composition and atomic arrangement in Mg 3 GaIr do not follow the 8- N rule due to the lack of valence electrons. Based on chemical bonding analysis in positional space, it was shown that the title compound has a polycationic-polyanionic organization. In comparison with other known intermetallic substances with this kind of bonding pattern, both the polyanion and the polyanion are remarkably complex. Mg 3- x Ga 1+ x Ir is an example of how the general organization of intermetallic substances (e.g., formation of polyanions and polycations) can be understood by extending the principles of 8- N compounds to electron-deficient materials with multi-atomic bonding.

Polyanions as polymers carrying multiple negative charges have been extensively studied with regard to their potential antiviral activity. Most studies to date focused on organic polyanionic polymers, both natural and synthetic. The inorganic polymer, polyphosphate (polyP), despite the ubiquitous presence of this molecule from bacteria to man, has attracted much less attention. More recently, and accelerated by the search for potential antiviral agents in the fight against the pandemic caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, it turned out that polyP disrupts the first step of the viral replication cycle, the interaction of the proteins in the virus envelope and in the cell membrane that are involved in the docking process of the virus with the target host cell. Experiments on a molecular level using the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and the cellular angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor revealed that polyP strongly inhibits the binding reaction through an electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged centers of the polyP molecule and a cationic groove, which is formed by positively charged amino acids on the RBD surface. In addition, it was found that polyP, due to its morphogenetic and energy delivering activities, enhances the antiviral host innate immunity defense of the respiratory epithelium. In recent years, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) has attracted increasing attention as a biomedical polymer or biomaterial with a great potential for application in regenerative medicine, in particular in the fields of tissue engineering and repair. The interest in polyP is based on two properties of this physiological polymer that make polyP stand out from other polymers: polyP has morphogenetic activity by inducing cell differentiation through specific gene expression, and it functions as an energy store and donor of metabolic energy, especially in the extracellular matrix or in the extracellular space. No other biopolymer applicable in tissue regeneration/repair is known that is endowed with this combination of properties. In addition, polyP can be fabricated both in the form of a biologically active coacervate and as biomimetic amorphous polyP nano/microparticles, which are stable and are activated by transformation into the coacervate phase after contact with protein/body fluids. PolyP can be used in the form of various metal salts and in combination with various hydrogel-forming polymers, whereby (even printable) hybrid materials with defined porosities and mechanical and biological properties can be produced, which can even be loaded with cells for 3D cell printing or with drugs and support the growth and differentiation of (stem) cells as well as cell migration/microvascularization. Potential applications in therapy of bone, cartilage and eye disorders/injuries and wound healing are summarized and possible mechanisms are discussed., (© 2022. No other virus after the outbreak of the influenza pandemic of 1918 affected the world's population as hard as the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The identification of effective agents/materials to prevent or treat COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 is an urgent global need. This review aims to survey novel strategies based on inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), a biologically formed but also synthetically available polyanionic polymeric material, which has the potential of being a potent inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 virus-cell-docking machinery. This virus attaches to the host cell surface receptor ACE2 with its receptor binding domain (RBD), which is present at the tips of the viral envelope spike proteins. On the surface of the RBD an unusually conserved cationic groove is exposed, which is composed of basic amino acids (Arg, Lys, and His). This pattern of cationic amino acids, the cationic groove, matches spatially with the anionic polymeric material, with polyP, allowing an electrostatic interaction. In consequence, the interaction between the RBD and ACE2 is potently blocked. PolyP is a physiological inorganic polymer, synthesized by cells and especially enriched in the blood platelets, which releases metabolically useful energy through enzymatic degradation and coupled ADP/ATP formation. In addition, this material upregulates the steady-state-expression of the mucin genes in the epithelial cells. High-voltage generation (over 4 V versus Li + /Li) of polyanion-positive electrode materials is usually achieved by Ni 3+ /Ni 2+ , Co 3+ /Co 2+ , or V 4+ /V 3+ redox couples, all of which, however, encounter cost and toxicity issues. In this short review, our recent efforts to utilize alternative abundant and less toxic Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Cr 4+ /Cr 3+ redox couples are summarized. Most successful examples are alluaudite Na 2 Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 (3.8 V versus sodium and hence 4.1 V versus lithium) and β 1 -Na 3 Al 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 -type Na 3 Cr 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 (4.7 V versus sodium and hence 5.0 V versus lithium), where maximizing Δ G by edge-sharing Fe 3+ -Fe 3+ Coulombic repulsion and the use of the 3d 2 /3d 3 configuration of Cr 4+ /Cr 3+ are essential for each case. Possible exploration of new high-voltage cathode materials is also discussed.

Reasonably simple, efficient, and possessing aspects of generality, the methodology for the synthesis of new, water-soluble, dendrimeric polyesters with great potential applications as antiviral drugs in their own right is described. The essential aspect of the presented approach is a quite unique, immediate access to the polyanionic material at each generation during divergent synthesis. Six target polyanionic dendrimers (generations 1, 2, and 3) have been synthesized. The key monomers applied in this project were 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid derivatives, which also worked as direct precursors of the charged dendrimer surface.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated coronavirus 2 has caused a global public health crisis with high rates of infection and mortality. Treatment and prevention approaches include vaccine development, the design of small-molecule antiviral drugs, and macromolecular neutralizing antibodies. Polymers have been designed for effective virus inhibition and as antiviral drug delivery carriers. This review summarizes recent progress and provides a perspective on polymer-based approaches for the treatment and prevention of coronavirus infection. Polyanions are an important class of water-soluble polymers because polyanions are utilized in a wide range of industrial fields. It is thus a great challenge to develop polyanions with novel structures to make their applications broader. In this study, a new polyanion with a dense 1,2,3-triazole backbone, poly(4-azido-5-hexanoic acid) (poly(AH)), was synthesized by copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) polymerization of t -butyl 4-azido-5-hexanoate followed by hydrolysis of the t -butyl ester groups. Turbidimetric and potentiometric titration data indicated that poly(AH) was well soluble in water under basic conditions (pH < 7) and a weaker polyanion (apparent p K a = 5.4) than polyacrylic acid (apparent p K a = 4.5). Adsorption tests exhibited that sodium salt of poly(AH) (poly(AH)Na) adsorbed most preferably Fe 3+ among the four metal ions examined, i.e., Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , Li + , and Fe 3+ . 1 H spin-lattice relaxation time measurements indicated that Fe 3+ ions were adsorbed favorably onto the 1,2,3-triazole residues.

The assembly of a hexameric lattice of retroviral immature particles requires the involvement of cell factors such as proteins and small molecules. A small, negatively charged polyanionic molecule, myo-inositol hexaphosphate (IP6), was identified to stimulate the assembly of immature particles of HIV-1 and other lentiviruses. Interestingly, cryo-electron tomography analysis of the immature particles of two lentiviruses, HIV-1 and equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), revealed that the IP6 binding site is similar. Based on this amino acid conservation of the IP6 interacting site, it is presumed that the assembly of immature particles of all lentiviruses is stimulated by IP6. Although this specific region for IP6 binding may be unique for lentiviruses, it is plausible that other retroviral species also recruit some small polyanion to facilitate the assembly of their immature particles. To study whether the assembly of retroviruses other than lentiviruses can be stimulated by polyanionic molecules, we measured the effect of various polyanions on the assembly of immature virus-like particles of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV), a member of alpharetroviruses, Mason-Pfizer monkey virus (M-PMV) representative of betaretroviruses, and murine leukemia virus (MLV), a member of gammaretroviruses. RSV, M-PMV and MLV immature virus-like particles were assembled in vitro from truncated Gag molecules and the effect of selected polyanions, myo-inostol hexaphosphate, myo-inositol, glucose-1,6-bisphosphate, myo-inositol hexasulphate, and mellitic acid, on the particles assembly was quantified. Our results suggest that the assembly of immature particles of RSV and MLV was indeed stimulated by the presence of myo-inostol hexaphosphate and myo-inositol, respectively. In contrast, no effect on the assembly of M-PMV as a betaretrovirus member was observed.

Proper assembly and disassembly of both immature and mature HIV-1 hexameric lattices are critical for successful viral replication. These processes are facilitated by several host-cell factors, one of which is myo-inositol hexaphosphate (IP6). IP6 participates in the proper assembly of Gag into immature hexameric lattices and is incorporated into HIV-1 particles. Following maturation, IP6 is also likely to participate in stabilizing capsid protein-mediated mature hexameric lattices. Although a structural-functional analysis of the importance of IP6 in the HIV-1 life cycle has been reported, the effect of IP6 has not yet been quantified. Using two in vitro methods, we quantified the effect of IP6 on the assembly of immature-like HIV-1 particles, as well as its stabilizing effect during disassembly of mature-like particles connected with uncoating. We analyzed a broad range of molar ratios of protein hexamers to IP6 molecules during assembly and disassembly. The specificity of the IP6-facilitated effect on HIV-1 particle assembly and stability was verified by K290A, K359A, and R18A mutants. In addition to IP6, we also tested other polyanions as potential assembly cofactors or stabilizers of viral particles. IMPORTANCE Various host cell factors facilitate critical steps in the HIV-1 replication cycle. One of these factors is myo-inositol hexaphosphate (IP6), which contributes to assembly of HIV-1 immature particles and helps maintain the well-balanced metastability of the core in the mature infectious virus. Using a combination of two in vitro methods to monitor assembly of immature HIV-1 particles and disassembly of the mature core-like structure, we quantified the contribution of IP6 and other small polyanion molecules to these essential steps in the viral life cycle. Our data showed that IP6 contributes substantially to increasing the assembly of HIV-1 immature particles. Additionally, our analysis confirmed the important role of two HIV-1 capsid lysine residues involved in interactions with IP6. Na 3 V(PO 4 ) 2 was reported recently as a novel cathode material with high theoretical energy density for Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, whether V 3+ /V 4+ /V 5+ multielectron reactions can be realized during the charging process is still an open question. In this work, Na 3 V(PO 4 ) 2 is synthesized by using a solid-state method. Its atomic composition and crystal structure are verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) joint refinement. The electrochemical performance of Na 3 V(PO 4 ) 2 is evaluated in two different voltage windows, namely 2.5-3.8 and 2.5-4.3 V. 51 V solid-state NMR (ssNMR) results disclose the presence of V 5+ in Na 2- x V(PO 4 ) 2 when charging Na 3 V(PO 4 ) 2 to 4.3 V, confirming Na 3 V(PO 4 ) 2 is a potential high energy density cathode through realization of V 3+ /V 4+ /V 5+ multielectron reactions.

The protein-only hypothesis predicts that infectious mammalian prions are composed solely of PrP Sc , a misfolded conformer of the normal prion protein, PrP C . However, to date, all wild type protein-only PrP Sc preparations lack significant levels of prion infectivity. Using a systemic biochemical approach, our laboratory isolated and identified two different endogenous cofactor molecules, RNA (Deleault et al., 2003 [50]; Deleault et al., 2007 [59]) and phosphatidylethanolamine (Deleault et al., 2012 [61]; Deleault et al., 2012 [18]), which facilitate the formation of prions with high levels of specific infectivity, leading us to propose to the alternative hypothesis that cofactor molecules are required to form wild type infectious prions (Deleault et al., 2007 [59]; Deleault et al., 2012 [18]; Geoghegan et al., 2007 [57]). In addition, we found that purified cofactor molecules restrict the strain properties of chemically defined infectious prions (Deleault et al., 2012 [18]), suggesting a "cofactor selection" model in which natural variation in the distribution of strain-specific cofactor molecules in different parts of the brain may be responsible for strain-dependent patterns of neurotropism (Deleault et al., 2012 [18]; Geoghegan et al., 2007 [57])., (© 2020 Elsevier Inc. Recently, one of the promising strategies to fight sensitive and resistant bacteria, and decrease the morbidity and mortality rates due to non-nosocomial infections, is to use antibiotic-loaded nanoparticles. In this study, ampicillin-loaded chitosan-polyanion nanoparticles were produced through the techniques of ionic gelation and polyelectrolyte complexation assisted by high-intensity sonication, using several crosslinking agents, including phytic acid (non-polymeric polyanion), sodium and potassium salts of poly(maleic acid- alt -ethylene) and poly(maleic acid- alt -octadecene) (polymeric polyanions). These nanoparticles were analysed and characterised in terms of particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential and encapsulation efficiency. The stability of these nanosystems was carried out at temperatures of 4 and 40 °C, and the antimicrobial effect was determined by the broth microdilution method using sensitive and resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains. The results reveal that most of the nanosystems have sizes <220 nm, positive zeta potential values and a monodisperse population, except for the nanoparticles crosslinked with PAM-18 polyanions. The nanometric systems exhibited adequate stability preventing aggregation and revealed a two-fold increase in antimicrobial activity when compared with free ampicillin. This study demonstrates the potential application of synthesised nanoparticles in the field of medicine, especially for treating infections caused by pathogenic S. aureus strains.

In the current study, electrostatically-driven pH responsive, supramolecular hydrogels of the trilacunary Wells-Dawson-type 15-tungsto-2-phosphate polyanion (P 2 W 15 ) and chitosan hydrochloride (ChCl) were prepared, using methacrylic acid as pH responsive agent using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The prepared hydrogels were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRD and thermal analyses (TGA-DSC). The swelling and pH based P 2 W 15 release profile of the hydrogels showed maximum swellability and release at pH 7.4. Different mathematical models were applied, showing that P 2 W 15 release followed supercase transport-II mechanism and zero-order kinetics. The cytotoxicity results showed that free and embedded P 2 W 15 exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines (MCF-7; HeLa) with minimal effects on normal cells (Vero). The developed hydrogels were administered to the rabbits for determining the pharmacokinetic behavior of the polyanion. Moreover, the developed hydrogel system as well as polyanion concentration used were also checked for its oral tolerability and safety evaluation in rabbits. The histopathological studies, serum chemistry (except blood glucose level) and hematological investigations exhibited that administered hydrogel suspension at maximal tolerable dose (4000mg/kg body weight) and polyanion concentration used (20mg) were safe from in-vivo point of view. The new [SnBi 3 ] 5- polyanion is obtained by the reaction of K 3 Bi 2 with K 4 Sn 9 or K 12 Sn 17 in liquid ammonia. The anion is iso(valence)electronic with and structurally analogous to the carbonate ion. Despite the high negative charge of the anion, the Sn-Bi bond lengths range between single and double bonds. Quantum-chemical calculations at a DFT-PBE0/def2-TZVPP/COSMO level of theory reveal that the partial double bond character between the heavy main-group atoms Bi and Sn originates from a delocalized π-electronic system. The structure of the anion is determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of the compounds K 5 [SnBi 3 ] 9 NH 3 (1) and K 9 [K(18-crown-6)][SnBi 3 ] 2 ⋅15 NH 3 (2). Polyelectrolytes are a prospective tool for protection of proteins against aggregation. We compared synthetic polyanion, poly(styrene sulfonate), and natural chaperones of different types, namely, GroEL-like chaperonin from Pseudomonas aeruginosa phage EL and human small heat shock protein HspB5 (αB-crystallin), in their ability to prevent aggregation of client proteins. At 45 °C, all three agents efficiently suppressed thermal aggregation of phage endolysin. At higher temperatures, HspB5 and poly(styrene sulfonate) also inhibited endolysin aggregation, though polyanion became less efficient than HspB5 at 55 °C and 60 °C. However, the polyanion completely protected another protein, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, even at 60 °C, in contrast to both natural chaperones whose effect disappeared at 50-55 °C. Ferroxidase activity has been reported to be altered in various biological fluids in neurodegenerative disease, but the sources contributing to the altered activity are uncertain. Here we assay fractions of serum and cerebrospinal fluid with a newly validated triplex ferroxidase assay. Our data indicate that while ceruloplasmin, a multicopper ferroxidase, is the predominant source of serum activity, activity in CSF predominantly derives from a <10 kDa component, specifically from polyanions such as citrate and phosphate. We confirm that in human biological samples, ceruloplasmin activity in serum is decreased in Alzheimer's disease, but in CSF a reduction of activity in Alzheimer's disease originates from the polyanion component.

Transition metal-containing polyanion compounds are attractive for use as cathode materials in sodium-ion batteries (SIB) because they possess elevated higher intrinsic electrochemical potentials versus oxide analogs given the same M n+/(n+1)+ redox couple, which leads to higher energy densities. NaMPO 4 (M = transition metal) compounds have a driving force to form into the electrochemically inactive maricite phase when using conventional methods. Herein we report on the synthesis of a NaCoPO 4 (NCP) polymorph ("Red"-phase) by a microwave-assisted solvothermal process at 200 °C using tetraethylene glycol as the solvent. Ex situ XRD, XANES, and electrochemical data are used to determine the reversibility of the Co 2+/3+ redox center.

Noble copolymers from xanthan gum (XG) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were synthesised through surfactant mediated graft copolymerization. The copolymers were applied as a biosorbent for inorganic Hg(II) at higher concentration level (300ppm). The copolymers were characterized using different analytical techniques which showed, the grafting principally occurred across the amorphous region of XG. Measurement of zeta potential and hydrodynamic size indicated, the copolymers were strong polyanion and possessed greater hydrodynamic size (almost in all cases) than XG, despite a strong molecular degradation that took place simultaneously during grafting. In the dispersed form, all grades of the copolymer displayed higher adsorption capability than XG, however, the grade with maximum grafting produced the highest efficiency (68.03%). Manipulation produced further improvement in efficiency to 72.17% with the same copolymer after 75min at a pH of 5.0. In situ encapsulation is a frequently used method to prepare hydrogels loaded with high quantities of therapeutic proteins. However, many cross-linking reactions, such as Michael-type addition or Diels-Alder (DA) reaction are not tolerant toward nucleophiles; therefore, side-reactions with proteins can occur during cross-linking. This may lead to undesired protein conjugation, activity loss and incomplete protein release. In this study, a number of polyanions, namely alginate, dextran sulfate, hyaluronic acid, heparin, and poly(acrylic acid), were screened for their capability to protect proteins during covalent cross-linking. To this end, lysozyme was incubated with furyl- and maleimide-substituted methoxy poly(ethylene glycol); different pH values were tested. The degree of PEGylation and the residual activity of lysozyme were investigated. Without polyanions, 61.1% of the total lysozyme amount was PEGylated at pH7.4; the residual activity was 20.3% of the initial activity. With the most effective polyanion (dextran sulfate), PEGylation could be completely suppressed; the residual activity was 98.4%. The protective effect of polyanions was attributed to electrostatic interactions with proteins; the "shielding" could be reversed by adding high salt concentrations. Furthermore, the protective effect was dependent on the concentration and molecular mass of the polyanion, but almost independent of the protein concentration. As a proof of concept, hydrogels were loaded with lysozyme and bevacizumab during cross-linking via DA reaction. Without polyanions, a large fraction of the protein was covalently bound to the polymer network resulting in degradation-controlled release; the residual activity of lysozyme was 50.0%. With polyanions, the protein molecules were mobile and their release was diffusion-controlled. The residual activity of lysozyme was 88.9%; the released bevacizumab was structurally intact. As layer-by-layer self-assembly deposition (LbL) is a versatile technique for surface modification, protein adsorption on the LbL modified glass is evaluated in this study. At the beginning, glass slides was silanized by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). Sodium alginate (Alg), poly(γ-glutamic acid) (PGA) and poly(aspartic acid) (PAsp) were selected as polyanion electrolytes and chitosan (CS) was used as the polycation electrolyte. Both polyanion and polycation electrolytes alternately deposited on the silanized glass slide surface by the LbL technique to get three different polyanion/chitosan series of LbL films ([Alg/CS], [PGA/CS], and [PAsp/CS]). Three kinds of kinetic model including pseudo-first-order, second-order kinetic and intraparticle diffusion model were used to evaluate the adsorption of albumin on the three different polyanion/chitosan series of LbL films. It is found that the adsorption of albumin on the polyanion/chitosan series of LbL films can be described well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism. To make sure if the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism of protein adsorbed on the other polyanion/polycation LbL films is also suitable, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(L-lysine) (PLL) are used as two other polycations. The [polyanion/PAH] and [polyanion/PLL] series of LbL films were prepared with the same LbL technique for albumin, fibrinogen, and fibronectin adsorption. From the results, it is found that albumin, fibrinogen, and fibronectin adsorption on the various polyanion/polycation LbL films can be described well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic mechanism. Borate chemistry offers attractive features for iron based polyanionic compounds. For battery applications, lithium iron borate has been proposed as cathode material because it has the lightest polyanionic framework that offers a high theoretical capacity. Moreover, it shows promising characteristics with an element combination that is favorable in terms of sustainability, toxicity, and costs. However, the system is also associated with a challenging chemistry, which is the major reason for the slow progress in its further development as a battery material. The two major challenges in the synthesis of LiFeBO3 are in obtaining phase purity and high electrochemical activity. Herein, we report a facile and scalable synthesis strategy for highly pure and electrochemically active LiFeBO3 by circumventing stability issues related to Fe(2+) oxidation state by the right choice of the precursor and experimental conditions. Additionally, we carried out a Mössbauer spectroscopic study of electrochemical charged and charged-discharged LiFeBO3 and reported a lithium diffusion coefficient of 5.56 × 10(-14) cm(2) s(-1) for the first time.

We have synthesized a targeted imaging agent for rheumatoid arthritis based on polysulfated gold nanorods. The CTAB layer on gold nanorods was first replaced with PEG-thiol and then with dendritic polyglycerolsulfate at elevated temperature, which resulted in significantly reduced cytotoxicity compared to polyanionic gold nanorods functionalized by non-covalent approaches. In addition to classical characterization methods, we have established a facile UV-VIS based BaCl2 agglomeration assay to confirm a quantitative removal of unbound ligand. With the help of a competitive surface plasmon resonance-based L-selectin binding assay and a leukocyte adhesion-based flow cell assay, we have demonstrated the high inflammation targeting potential of the synthesized gold nanorods in vitro. In combination with the surface plasmon resonance band of AuNRs at 780 nm, these findings permitted the imaging of inflammation in an in vivo mouse model for rheumatoid arthritis with high contrast using multispectral optoacoustic tomography. The study offers a robust method for otherwise difficult to obtain covalently functionalized polyanionic gold nanorods, which are suitable for biological applications as well as a low-cost, actively targeted, and high contrast imaging agent for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. This paves the way for further research in other inflammation associated pathologies, in particular, when photothermal therapy can be applied.

Nanoparticles (NPs) constitute an important medium for the targeted delivery of cancer therapeutics. Targeting of NPs to a specific cell type is traditionally achieved through the modification of the NP surface with peptides, aptamers, or other motifs that specifically recognize a cell-surface receptor, leading to internalization of NPs via clathrin and caveolae-mediated endocytosis. We have discovered that modifying the NP surface with anionic polyelectrolytes of varying lipophilicity can regulate the uptake of lipid NPs by endothelial and epithelial cells. Furthermore, we report the finding that synthetic polyelectrolytes composed of an aromatic sulfonic acid backbone exhibit specific affinity for caveolae of endothelial cells. By exploiting the higher expression of caveolae in endothelial cells in comparison with epithelial cells, a purely physiochemical approach to the targeted uptake of lipid NPs to endothelial cells is demonstrated. The ability to confer preferential affinity for NPs to cell surface domains by varying the charge and lipophilic characteristics of an NP surface offers a general means of achieving targeted delivery without the need for receptor-ligand-type targeting strategies.

The surface of styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) membrane is modified with tri-steps in this study. At first, two step modified SBS membrane (MSBS) was prepared with epoxidation and ring opening reaction with maleated ionomer. Then chitosan was used as the polycation electrolyte and sodium alginate, poly(γ-glutamic acid) (PGA) and poly(aspartic acid) (PAsp) were selected as polyanion electrolytes to deposit on the surfaces of MSBS membrane by the layer-by-layer self-assembly (LbL) deposition technique to get three [chitosan/polyanion] LbL modified SBS membranes, ([CS/Alg], [CS/PGA] and [CS/PAsp]). From the quantitative XPS analysis and water contact angle measurement, it is found that the order of wettability and the content of functional group percentages of COO(-) and OCN on the three [CS/polyanion] systems are [CS/Alg]>[CS/PGA]>[CS/PAsp]. Performances of water vapor transmission rates, fibronectin adsorption, antibacterial assessment and 3T3 fibroblast cell growth on [CS/Alg], [CS/PGA] and [CS/PAsp] membranes were also evaluated. With the evaluation of water vapor transmission rate, these [CS/Alg], [CS/PGA] and [CS/PAsp] membranes are sterile semipermeable with water evaporation at about 82±8g/day·m(2). It is found that the amount of fibronectin adsorption on the three [CS/polyanion] systems is significantly determined by the sum of the functional group of COO(-) and OCN on the surfaces of [CS/Alg], [CS/PGA] and [CS/PAsp] systems. The results are inverse with the sum of the functional group of COO(-) and OCN on the three [CS/polyanion]. From the cytotoxicity test and cell adhesion and proliferation assay of 3T3 fibroblasts on the three [CS/polyanion] systems, it revealed that the cells not only remained viable but they also proliferated on the surfaces of [CS/Alg], [CS/PGA] and [CS/PAsp]. The bactericidal activity was found on [CS/Alg], [CS/PGA] and [CS/PAsp]. The transport of bacterial through these [CS/polyanion] membranes was also conducted. Succinylation of serum albumin produces a negatively charged protein with a potent anti-HIV-1/2 and anti-SIVmac activity. The in vitro IC50 values of Suc-HSA against the respective primate lentiviruses are in the low nanomolar concentration range. Succinylated homologous serum albumin was given intravenously at four different doses, ranging from 0.1 to 10 mg/kg to Wistar rats and Cynomolgus monkeys. Plasma samples were assayed for their drug content using iodinated proteins. The pharmacokinetics parameters were calculated by a single compartment model, taking into account a potential saturable elimination process. In rats as well as in monkeys succinylated serum albumin clearly showed dose-dependent kinetics. The rate of Suc-SSA elimination from the bloodstream in macaques could be described by a Vmax of 11.7 ± 0.2 µg/min kg-(1) and a K. of 0.40 ± 0.06 µg/mL (5.5 nM). The elimination of Suc-RSA in rats was characterized by a 10-fold higher V. of 112 ± 29 µg/min kg(-1) and a much higher K. of 25 ± 9 µg/mL (340 nM). The volume of distribution was about the plasma volume for both species. In rats, no significant differences were found between the kinetic parameters of Suc-RSA, Suc-HSA, or Suc-SSA. Histochemical staining of tissue sections obtained from the liver, spleen, kidneys, and different lymph nodes showed that endothelial cells and macrophages from the liver and spleen are involved in the clearance of the negatively charged albumins. Since replication of HIV mainly takes place in the lymphoid tissue, uptake of succinylated albumin in this system may imply an interesting therapeutic aspect of the negatively charged albumins.
