Background: Aluminum phosphides (AlP) is a solid fumigant pesticide known for its high toxicity and mortality. Diagnosis of AlP is based on the history and clinical examination. The literature on the early prediction of adverse outcomes following AlP exposure is limited. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) as early accessible predictors of mortality in AlP-exposed patients., Method: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study on 420 adult patients with acute AlP poisoning., Results: This study reported mean NLR and PLR of 4.07 ± 3.82 and 182.97 ± 147.29, respectively. Patients with high NLR and PLR showed more severe presentation, indicated by the significantly lower Glasgow scales and higher poison severity score grades. Besides, the need for mechanical ventilation, vasopressor therapy, and ICU admission was significantly higher among patients with high NLR and PLR ( P  = 0.000). We observed a significantly higher proportion of mortality among patients with high NLR (69.5%) and PLR (87.4%) ( P  = 0.000). The NLR > 3.42, PLR > 172.5, and their combinations were significant predictors of mortality, showing area under curves above 0.94. Utilizing a combination of NLR and PLR yielded a modestly improved performance as a mortality predictor with a slight increase in the Youden index (0.81). The high NLR and high PLR groups had mean survival times of 28.851 and 16.256 h respectively., Conclusion: These findings suggest that high NLR and PLR are associated with a worse prognosis and a higher mortality risk among patients with acute AlP poisoning., (© The Author(s) 2024. Objectives: To evaluate the predictivity of haematologic parameters and HALP score on testicular viability in adults with testicular torsion., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 139 men ≥18 years of age who underwent testicular detorsion with fixation (n = 90) or orchiectomy (n = 49) due to testicular torsion in five different tertiary centers between May 2019 and August 2023. Demographic, pre-, peri- and postoperative data were analyzed., Results: The hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score in the orchiectomy group was significantly lower compared to the detorsion group (adjusted p = 0.032). Platelet to lymphocyte ratio and duration of torsion were significantly higher in the orchiectomy group (adjusted p = 0.048, adjusted p = 0.000, respectively). Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio did not reach statistical significance between the groups (adjusted p = 0.074) Furthermore, the orchiectomy group had statistically significantly more heterogeneous echotexture on scrotal ultrasonography (adjusted p = 0.000). On binary logistic regression analysis; platelet-lymphocyte ratio and HALP score were not found as significant predictors for surgical outcome (p = 0.296, p = 0.078, respectively). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that only heterogeneous echotexture on scrotal Doppler ultrasonography and duration of torsion were independent risk factors for testicular necrosis development (p = 0.004, p < 0.001, respectively)., Conclusions: This study demonstrates that heterogeneous echotexture on ultrasound and longer duration of torsion seem to be independent risk factors for testicular necrosis after testicular torsion in adults. Purpose: Patients presenting with ureteral stones and concurrent urinary tract infections require prompt kidney drainage as per standard care guidelines. However, even in patients who are promptly drained and treated with appropriate antibiotics, the mortality rate due to urosepsis has been reported to be nearly 9%. Therefore, Predictive tools for early sepsis detection have become essential. The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) are potential biomarkers for predicting infection risk in these patients., Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis involving patients diagnosed with obstructing ureteral stones who underwent urgent stent placement due to suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) in the emergency room (ER) was conducted. The baseline characteristics of patients were age, sex, comorbidities, and urological history. Laboratory data collected during hospitalization included total leukocyte and platelet counts and blood cultures. Ratios were calculated from the serum studies obtained upon admission to the ER. A logistic regression model was utilized to predict the incidence of positive qSOFA score (sepsis prediction score), the need for vasopressors, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and sepsis, using NLR and PLR as independent variables., Results: Between January 2016 and December 2020, 143 patients with a diagnosis of obstructing ureteral stone were admitted to the ER with a suspected UTI. 11.9% showed a positive qSOFA score, 20.3% required vasopressor support for > 1 h after ureteral stent placement, 28.7% required ICU admission, and 16.8% met sepsis criteria. Sepsis was defined as patients who were qSOFA positive and vasopressors needed for more than 1 h following stent placement. Logistic regression analysis revealed that PLR and positive blood cultures correlated significantly with positive qSOFA scores. Using logistic regression analysis, PLR, NLR, and positive blood culture were each independent predictors of vasopressor requirements, ICU admission, and urosepsis., Conclusions: NLR and PLR may be valuable prognostic markers for predicting urosepsis risk in urolithiasis patients who present with obstructing stones and concern for systemic infection. Background: We conducted a large-scale epidemiological analysis to investigate the associations between systemic inflammation markers and heart failure (HF). Our aim is to identify potential biomarkers for early detection of HF., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We investigated the associations between five systemic inflammation markers (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio [NLR], platelet to lymphocyte ratio [PLR], systemic immune inflammation index [SII], system inflammation response index [SIRI], and aggregate index of systemic inflammation [AISI]) and the risk of HF., Results: The prevalence rates of HF exhibited a gradual increase across increasing logNLR, logPLR, logSII, logSIRI, and logAISI tertiles. Compared to those in the highest tertiles of logNLR, logSII, logSIRI, and logAISI had a 1.579-fold, 1.341-fold, 1.956-fold, and 1.499-fold increased risk of HF compared to those in the lowest tertile respectively. Conversely, there was no significant correlation between logPLR and HF risk among subjects in the highest tertile. The restricted cubic splines (RCS) analysis revealed a non-linear relationship between the elevation of systemic inflammation markers and HF prevalence. Specifically, a per standard deviation increase in any of these variables is associated with a respective 45%, 29%, 28%, 44% and 29% increase in HF prevalence. Background and Objectives: Following nephrectomy with curative intent, a subset of patients diagnosed with non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma (nmRCC) will present late recurrences, with metastatic relapses after 5 years from the surgical intervention. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of late recurrences in Romanian patients with nmRCC that have undergone surgery and to assess the clinicopathological characteristics prognostic for late-relapse RCC., Materials and Methods: This is a single-center, retrospective and observational study that analyzed patients with nmRCC with clear cell histology who underwent surgical resection of the primary tumor with curative intent. The patients included in the study were treated and further surveilled according to a personalized follow-up plan between January 2011 and December 2012 in The Oncology Institute "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuţă", Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Study endpoints included median disease-free survival (DFS), median overall survival (OS), as well as evaluation of possible prognostic factors indicative of late relapse., Results: In the study cohort (n=51), the median DFS was 46 months and median OS was 130 months. DFS was significantly correlated with the International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium (IMDC) score (p=0.04, HR=2.48; 95% CI [1.02, 6.01]), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (a higher NLR value was associated with a poorer DFS, p=0.035), tumor size (T4 tumors vs. T1 p<0.05, HR=9,81; 95% CI [2.65, 36.27]) and Fuhrman nuclear grade (Fuhrman grade 1 vs. Fuhrman grade 3 p<0.05, HR=4,16; 95% CI = [1.13,15.22]). Fifty one percent of the patients included experienced disease relapse. From this subgroup, a significant percentage of 42% patients presented disease recurrence after 60 months from nephrectomy. OS was correlated to IMDC score (p=0.049, HR=2.36; 95% CI [1, 5.58]) and Fuhrman nuclear grade (Fuhrman grade 1 vs. Fuhrman grade 3 p<0.05, HR=3,97; 95% CI [1.08, 14.54])., Conclusions: The results of this study support the previously presented biological behavior of RCC, demonstrating that late recurrences in RCC are not uncommon occurrences and patients with localized RCC should be followed up for a longer interval after the surgery for the primary tumor. Background: Avelumab and pembrolizumab are administered after platinum-based chemotherapy for the treatment of metastatic urothelial carcinoma. We explored the prognostic factors and risk scores for predicting the outcomes of metastatic or unresectable urothelial carcinoma at the start of treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors., Methods: This retrospective study included patients with metastatic or unresectable urothelial carcinoma treated with avelumab or pembrolizumab after platinum-based chemotherapy between January 2017 and December 2022. Prognostic factors, including patient and tumor characteristics and blood data at the initiation of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy, were examined., Results: This study included 36 and 207 patients treated with avelumab and pembrolizumab, respectively, for metastatic or unresectable urothelial carcinoma. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, presence of visceral metastases, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and lactate dehydrogenase levels were independent prognostic factors for predicting overall survival. The median overall survival of patients in the risk-score model was 58.5 months (score zero), 27.9 months (one), 13.1 months (two) and 3.9 months (three or higher). The C-index for overall survival was 0.718 for the newly developed risk score compared with 0.679 for the Bellmunt score and 0.703 for the Bellmunt-C-reactive protein score. Additionally, the C-index for overall survival using the immune prognostic index derived from lactate dehydrogenase and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio was 0.646 compared with 0.615 for the Lung Immune Prognostic Index., Conclusions: A risk score that includes the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and lactate dehydrogenase may serve as a useful model for predicting prognosis following the initiation of immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with metastatic or unresectable urothelial carcinoma., (© The Author(s) 2024. Background: This study investigates the role of Delta Neutrophil Index (DNI), an inflammation marker, in late-onset fetal growth restriction (LO-FGR) and its prediction of composite adverse neonatal outcomes., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 684 pregnant women (456 with normal fetal development and 228 with LO-FGR) who delivered at Health Sciences University Etlik Zubeyde Hanim Women's Health Training and Research Hospital between January 1, 2015, and June 30, 2018. Composite adverse neonatal outcomes were defined as at least one of the following: 5th minute APGAR score < 7, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission., Results: The FGR group had significantly higher levels of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and DNI compared to controls (p < 0.05, for all). For FGR diagnosis, the DNI demonstrated the highest area under the curve (AUC = 0.677, 95% CI: 0.642-0.711) with a cut-off value of > -2.9, yielding a sensitivity of 78.41%, a specificity of 52.97%, a positive likelihood ratio (+ LR) of 1.68, and a negative likelihood ratio (-LR) of 0.37 (p < 0.001). For predicting composite adverse neonatal outcomes in the FGR group, DNI again demonstrated superior performance with an AUC of 0.635 (95% CI: 0.598-0.670), a cut-off value of > -2.2, a sensitivity of 69.90%, a specificity of 55.36%, a + LR of 1.56, and a -LR of 0.51 (p < 0.001). NLR, PLR, and MLR had AUCs below 0.55, indicating poor discriminative ability, with none reaching statistical significance., Conclusion: This study highlights the potential role of DNI as a promising biomarker for detecting inflammatory processes associated with LO-FGR and its complications., (© 2024. Background: Recent evidence links the prognosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI) to various factors, including baseline clinical characteristics, TBI specifics, and neuroimaging outcomes. This study focuses on identifying risk factors for short-term survival in severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) cases and developing a prognostic model., Methods: Analyzing 430 acute sTBI patients from January 2018 to December 2023 at the 904th Hospital's Neurosurgery Department, this retrospective case-control study separated patients into survival outcomes: 288 deceased and 142 survivors. It evaluated baseline, clinical, hematological, and radiological data to identify risk and protective factors through univariate and Lasso regression. A multivariate model was then formulated to pinpoint independent prognostic factors, assessing their relationships via Spearman's correlation. The model's accuracy was gauged using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, with additional statistical analyses for quantitative factors and model effectiveness. Internal validation employed ROC, calibration curves, Decision Curve Analysis (DCA), and Clinical Impact Curves (CIC) to assess model discrimination, utility, and accuracy. The International Mission for Prognosis and Analysis of Clinical Trials in TBI (IMPACT) and Corticosteroid Randomization After Significant Head injury (CRASH) models were also compared through multivariate regression., Results: Factors like unilateral and bilateral pupillary non-reactivity at admission, the derived neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), D-dimer to fibrinogen ratio (DFR), infratentorial hematoma, and Helsinki CT score were identified as independent risk factors (OR > 1), whereas serum albumin emerged as a protective factor (OR < 1). The model showed superior predictive performance with an AUC of 0.955 and surpassed both IMPACT and CRASH models in predictive accuracy. Internal validation confirmed the model's high discriminative capability, clinical relevance, and effectiveness., Conclusions: Short-term survival in sTBI is significantly influenced by factors such as pupillary response, dNLR, PLR, DFR, serum albumin levels, infratentorial hematoma occurrence, and Helsinki CT scores at admission. Inflammation is a complex physiological process that plays a pivotal role in many if not all pathological conditions, including infectious as well as inflammatory diseases, like periodontitis and autoimmune disorders. Inflammatory response to periodontal biofilms and tissue destruction in periodontitis is associated with the release of inflammatory mediators. Chronic inflammation can promote the development of cancer. Persistence of inflammatory mediators plays a crucial role in this process. Quantification and monitoring of the severity of inflammation in relation to cancer is essential. Periodontitis is mainly quantified based on the severity and extent of attachment loss and/or pocket probing depth, in addition with bleeding on probing. In recent years, studies started to investigate inflammation indices in association with periodontal diseases. To date, only few reviews have been published focusing on the relationship between blood cell count, inflammation indices, and periodontitis. This review presents a comprehensive overview of different systemic inflammation indices, their methods of measurement, and the clinical applications in relation to periodontitis and cancer. This review outlines the physiological basis of inflammation and the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of the parameters described. Key inflammation indices are commonly utilized in periodontology such as the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio. Inflammation indices like the platelet to lymphocyte ratio, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit, red blood cell distribution width, lymphocyte to monocyte ratio, delta neutrophil index, and the systemic immune inflammation index are also used in hospital settings and will be discussed. Purpose: Inflammatory markers in the blood have been linked to tumor prognosis, but their specific prognostic significance in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients undergoing intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is not well established. This study aims to evaluate the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) in this patient population., Patients and Methods: A total of 406 non-metastatic NPC patients were included in the study. NLR, PLR, and LMR were stratified according to their average values. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Cox multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate the associations of NLR, PLR, and LMR with PFS and OS., Results: Patients with NLR > 2.78 had worse PFS (P = 0.008) and OS (P < 0.001); PLR > 162.48 was related to lower PFS (P = 0.018) but not OS (P = 0.29); LMR > 5.05 showed no significant difference in PFS and OS compared to LMR ≤ 5.05 (P values were 0.13 and 0.94, respectively). Multivariate analysis indicated that NLR was an independent prognostic factor for PFS (HR, 1.674; 95% CI, 1.006-2.784; P = 0.047) and OS (HR, 4.143; 95% CI, 2.111-8.129; P = 0.000), while PLR and LMR did not demonstrate significant associations with PFS and OS., Conclusion: This study identifies NLR as a novel and independent prognostic indicator for NPC patients receiving IMRT, offering valuable insights that could inform future clinical decision-making. Clinical Relevance: The role and prognostic significance of systemic inflammatory markers in various malignancies have been the subject of investigation. The role of these inflammatory markers in eyelid lesions remains to be elucidated., Background: Benign and malignant lesions of the eyelid are common presentations in eye clinics. Systemic inflammatory markers derived from a complete blood count may provide insight into the benign-malignant differentiation of the lesion., Methods: This study included 134 patients who underwent surgery for eyelid lesions between 2021-2023. The lesions were evaluated by oculoplastic surgeons and operated on with a preliminary diagnosis of benign or malignant. According to the histopathological diagnosis, benign lesions were included in Group 1 and malignant lesions in Group 2. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune inflammation index (SII) (NxP/L) based on neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet counts were calculated from the preoperative complete blood count of all patients., Results: Eighty-eight patients were included in Group 1 and 46 patients in Group 2. There were 41/47 (Female/Male) in Group 1 and 19/27 (F/M) males in Group 2 ( p  = 0.345). The mean age was 62.91 ± 9.04 years in Group 1 and 65.41 ± 8.76 years in Group 2 ( p  = 0.127). The preliminary diagnosis and histopathological diagnosis were incompatible in 5 cases in both groups. In Group 1: NLR = 1.82 ± 0.72, PLR = 124.50 ± 45.19 and SII = 454.51 ± 220.20, in Group 2: NLR = 2.48 ± 0.89, PLR = 128.12 ± 49.58 and SII = 590.22 ± 271.09. NLR and SII differences between groups were statistically significant, while PLR was similar ( p  < 0.001, p  = .002, p  = .671). ROC curve analysis showed that the optimal cut-off values for NLR, PLR, and SII were 1.99, 119.16, and 475.21, respectively., Conclusion: High levels of NLR and SII in eyelid tumours can be used as an adjunct to examination findings in the preliminary diagnosis of the lesion as benign or malignant and may influence surgical planning.

Objective: To assess the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII), as diagnostic markers for neonatal sepsis., Methods: This retrospective study involve neonates with sepsis and healthy neonates as controls. NLR, PLR, and SII were compared between groups., Result: In total, 60 neonates with sepsis and 60 healthy controls were involved in the study. Compared with controls, the sepsis group had higher values for NLR, PLR and SII. Logistic regression analysis suggested that the NLR, PLR and SII were independent risk factors for neonatal sepsis. Clinical manifestations of neonatal sepsis are often unspecified. Therefore, sepsis biomarkers could be used to support diagnosis while waiting for blood culture results, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of NLR and PLR as diagnostic markers in neonatal sepsis. A cross-sectional study was conducted at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, Indonesia, from April to October 2019. This study included neonates aged less than 28 days, diagnosed with suspected sepsis, and had no previous history of antibiotics administration. Patients underwent clinical assessment, laboratory examination, and blood culture. Patients were grouped into sepsis and non-sepsis based on the blood culture results. The median hematological examination and the range of NLR and PLR in both the sepsis and non-sepsis groups were subjected to analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test to assess differences. NLR and PLR optimal cut-off values were determined using a receiver operator curve (ROC) with a confidence interval of 95%. A total of 137 neonates were enrolled, of which 49 were classified as sepsis and 89 as non-sepsis based on blood culture results. The optimal cutoff values for NLR and PLR were 2.75 and 11.73. Using those cutoff values, NLR and PLR could predict neonatal sepsis with sensitivities of 52.1% and 47.9%, specificities of 50.6% and 47.2%, area under the curve (AUC) of 0.46 and 0.47, with p =0.525 and p =0.662, respectively. Introduction: Biomarkers that help to evaluate the immune system and could be useful in multiple sclerosis (MS) are the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII). The objective of this work is to evaluate the significance of the SII index, PLR, and NLR before and after transplantation in individuals with MS who underwent autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (aHSCT) at a single institution., Methods: Patients with MS who received an aHSCT between 2017 and 2022 were included in the study. NLR, PLR, and SII index were calculated prior to the transplant and 100 days after, and evaluation of the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) was done before the transplant and 12 months after. The cohort was divided into two groups: aHSCT responders (R) and nonresponders (NR)., Results: Fifty-eight individuals were examined: 37 patients in the responders group R group and 21 in NR group. There was no statistically significant difference in the SII, NLR, and PLR prior to the transplant, however at 100 days post-HSCT, NLR in the R group was 1.8 versus 3.1 in the NR group (p = 0.003), PLR was 194 versus 295, respectively (p = 0.024), meanwhile SII index was 489.5 versus 729.3 (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: High NLR and SII index values after the aHSCT were associated with a worsening in the EDSS score. However, since this is the first ever study that compared NLR and SII index with the aHSCT response in persons with MS, further studies must be performed to corroborate this information., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Background: Inflammation is considered to play an important role in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), but the relationship between inflammation and poor prognosis in these patients has not yet been studied., Methods: We enrolled AMI patients combined with COPD and divided them into three groups according to the tertiles of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) respectively. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for in-hospital all-cause death in these patients. Covariates were adjusted stepwise to determine the association between inflammatory markers and poor prognosis. Also, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the greatest predictive indicator for all-cause death., Results: A total of 281 AMI patients combined with COPD were enrolled, of which 31 experienced in-hospital mortality. The risk of all-cause death was significantly higher among those with higher NLR. The highest tertile of NLR was significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause death (all P  < 0.05). This association remained significant after adjusting for confounding factors [Odds Ratio (OR): 10.571, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.307-48.442, P  = 0.002]. Background: The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), a promising inflammatory biomarker, contributes to the development of atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the importance of PLR in predicting adverse events in people undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with T2D., Methods: We consecutively enrolled 8831 people who underwent PCI and divided them into four groups according to PLR and glycemic metabolic status (PLR-Low/High without T2D, PLR-Low/High with T2D). The endpoints were major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and stent thrombosis. A multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to determine this association., Results: During the 2.4-year follow-up, 663 (7.5%) MACCE and 75 (0.85%) stent thromboses were recorded. The risk of MACCE (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.10-1.53, P = 0.002) and stent thrombosis (HR: 2.32, 95% CI: 1.38-3.90, P = 0.002) was significantly higher in people with high PLR levels than in those with low PLR. Among people with T2D, the PLR-High group showed a significantly higher risk of MACCE (HR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.21-2.09, P = 0.001) and stent thrombosis (HR: 3.15, 95% CI: 1.32-7.52, P = 0.010). Background: Increasing evidence has showed that inflammatory biomarkers, including neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and fibrinogen can be used as predictors in the prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The aim of this study was to explore prognostic value of these biomarkers and evaluate the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of combined score based on plasma fibrinogen and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (F-PLR score)., Methods: A total of 506 patients with ESCC were enrolled in this study. Harrell's concordance index (c-index) was used to determine the optimal cut-off values of these markers and evaluate their prognostic significance. The relationship between factors with survival rates (including overall survival [OS] and disease-free survival [DFS]) was explored by Kaplan-Meier curve, univariate analysis and multivariate cox hazard analysis., Results: Our result indicated that high F-PLR score was significantly associated with longer tumor length and deeper depth of tumor invasion (p < 0.01). The result of Cox multivariable analysis showed that F-PLR score was an independent prognostic factor for OS (p = 0.002) and DFS (p = 0.003). In addition, F-PLR score presented the greater c-index values for OS and DFS compared with NLR, PLR and fibrinogen level. Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a complex neuroinflammatory disease characterized by severe disability. In this study, we investigated the relationship between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)/serum albumin quotient (Qalb) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in assessing disease severity., Method: A retrospective analysis of 72 NMOSD patients and 72 healthy controls was conducted, and patients were divided into two groups based on their Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores., Results: NMOSD patients had significantly higher levels of serum PLR, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to healthy controls (all P<0.01). Patients in the EDSS≥4 group exhibited significantly elevated levels of Qalb, QIgG, QIgA, QIgM, and PLR (P=0.000, P<0.0001, P=0.0019, P=0.0001, respectively). Spearman's correlation test revealed significant positive associations between Qalb, QIgG, QIgA, QIgM, PLR, and EDSS score. Specifically, Qalb (r=0.571; P<0.001), QIgG (r=0.551; P<0.001), QIgA (r=0.519; P<0.001), and QIgM (r=0.541; P<0.001) demonstrated significant positive correlations with EDSS score, while PLR exhibited a moderate positive correlation (r=0.545; P<0.001) with EDSS score and a mild positive association (r=0.387; P<0.001) with Qalb. The increase of Qalb was positively correlated with the increased EDSS score (r=0.528, P=0.001), as well as the increase of QIgG (r=0.509, P=0.001), and the increase of QIgA (r=0.4989, P=0.03). ROC analysis indicated that Qalb, QIgG, QIgA, QIgM, and PLR levels could effectively serve as indicators of NMOSD severity (all P<0.0001). Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is associated with higher mortality as a result of poor prognosis and unavailability of effective treatment options. This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical value of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) to aid in differentiating early hepatocellular carcinoma from liver cirrhosis patients. Three hundred and nine (309) patients including 155 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 154 patients with liver cirrhosis were enrolled in this study. General clinical characteristics and blood parameters of each patient were collected, calculated, and retrospectively analyzed. Mann-Whitney U test was calculated to compare the two groups. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve was performed to investigate the diagnostic potential of PLR in the prediction of HCC at a cut-off with high accuracy (area under the curve [AUC]) > 0.80. Hemoglobin (HB) concentration, red blood cell (RBC) count, neutrophil (NEU) count, platelet count, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significantly higher in the HCC patients than in the liver cirrhosis patients (p < 0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that the AUC, optimal cut-off value, sensitivity, and specificity of PLR to predict HCC patients were 0.912, 98.7, 81.2%, and 80.6% respectively. Platelet parameters like Mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and WBC parameters like Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio(PLR) have recently been emerging as a new prognostic marker in number of coronary artery disease (CAD) with limited studies to explore their utility., Aims and Objectives: this study aimed to evaluate MPV, P-LCR, PDW, PLR, NLR and GRACE risk score in CAD patients., Material and Methods: this descriptive cross-sectional study was done in 330 cases of CAD and 200 healthy controls were studied.MPV, platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR), PLR, NLR and PDW of patients were analyzed., Results: In our study, 245 were males and 85 were females. Mean PDW, MPV, Mean PLCR, Mean NLR was significantly higher in CAD cases as compared to controls ( p value < 0.05). Mean PLR was not significantly different in CAD cases and controls. Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) can pose significant risks to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors and diagnostic value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) for SSIs in patients undergoing laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma., Methods: A retrospective analysis of 866 patients at our hospital was conducted between June 2016 and June 2022. The study divided patients into two groups: those with SSIs and those without. General data and operative room-related information were collected. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were clearly defined. Peripheral blood indicators were analysed, and observation indicators were meticulously selected, including surgery time, usage of a laminar flow operating room and intraoperative hypothermia. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0 software, including univariate, multivariate analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis., Results: Thirty-six out of 866 patients developed SSIs. Statistically significant differences were found for surgery time, usage of non-laminar flow operating rooms and intraoperative hypothermia (p < 0.05). ROC curve analysis showed an AUC of 0.765 (95% CI: 0.636-0.868) for serum NLR and PLR, with optimal cut-off values at NLR 4.8 and PLR 196, indicating moderate to strong discriminative ability for SSIs., Conclusions: The study identified non-laminar flow operating rooms, extended surgery time, and intraoperative hypothermia as significant risk factors for SSIs. Background: Using straightforward and accessible haematological parameters platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) to diagnose preeclampsia (PE) early and precisely remains a challenge. Although several clinical studies suggested that PLR is able to diagnose PE, there has been no systematic evaluation of the diagnostic utility., Objectives: To examine the diagnostic accuracy and potential applicability of PLR in the detection of PE., Study Design: Seven databases were searched using a combination of PLR and PE terms, and all potentially pertinent studies were systematically searched up to March 2023. All potentially relevant studies both prospective and retrospective were reviewed. To assess the diagnostic value of PLR for PE, pooled sensitivity (Sen), specificity (Spe), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (SROC-AUC) were calculated., Results: Thirteen studies were enrolled in the meta-analysis. In the second and third trimesters, the PLR suggested a diagnostic value for PE with a pooled Sen of 54.7% [95% confidence interval (CI) (51.7, 57.6)], Spe of 77.8% [95% CI (75.5, 80.0)], + LR of 2.457 [95% CI (1.897, 3.182)], -LR of 0.584 [95% CI (0.491, 0.695)], DOR of 4.434 [95% CI (3.071, 6.402)], the SROC-AUC of 0.7296 and the standard error (SE) of 0.0370., Conclusion: For the diagnosis of PE, PLR has a limited sensitivity but an acceptable specificity, and showed moderate accuracy. Further using complete blood count (CBC) indicators such as PLR alone or in combination to diagnose and predict PE could reduce healthcare costs and improve maternal and child prognosis.

Background: Evidence suggests that inflammation contributes to tumor development, from onset to progression and metastasis. Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a composite parameter that provides information from two distinct cellular elements, platelets, and lymphocytes. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the prognostic role of the PLR, in terms of overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), cancer-specific survival (CSS) and progression-free survival (PFS), in patients with primary head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treated with surgery followed or not by adjuvant therapies., Materials and Methods: This systematic review was performed according to the guidelines reported in the Cochrane Handbook and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement. Meta-analysis of OS and DFS was performed using the inverse of variance test. Random-effect models were used on the basis of high heterogeneity. Risk of bias assessment, quality of evidence within studies (GRADE) and trial sequential analysis (TSA) were also performed., Results: The analysis revealed that a higher value of pretreatment PLR correlates with a statistically significant decrease of OS (HR, 1.85; 95% CI: [1.23, 2.80]; P < .00001), confirmed by TSA. The meta-analysis reports an association between high PLR and DFS (HR,1.46; 95% CI: [1.03, 2.06]; P = .003); but TSA suggests that it his should be considered as a false positive. Purpose: To explore the relationship between the systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) and postoperative delirium (POD) in older patients with hip arthroplasty surgery., Patients and Methods: Older patients who underwent elective hip arthroplasty surgery were included in this retrospective study. SIRI, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were collected from blood routine examination at admission. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between SIRI levels and POD was analyzed., Results: Ultimately, 116 older patients who met the inclusion criteria were assessed. Thirty-four (29%) of 116 patients diagnosed with POD were defined as the POD group, and the rest consisted of the Non-POD group. Compared with non-POD patients, POD patients showed significantly higher levels of SIRI ( P < 0.001) and NLR ( P = 0.002) at admission. There was no significance in the levels of PLR between two groups. SIRI was independently associated with the occurrence of POD in multivariate logistic regression analysis [odds ratio (OR) = 3.34, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 1.26-8.85, P = 0.016]. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that SIRI with an optimal cutoff value of 0.987 predicted the POD with a sensitivity of 88.2% and specificity of 74.4%, and the area under the curve was 0.82 (95% CI, 0.74-0.90, P < 0.01)., Conclusion: Preoperative SIRI and NLR levels in the blood are associated with the occurrence of POD. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is defined as hearing loss of more than 30 dB in less than 72 h. SSNHL is a frequent complaint and an emergency in otolaryngology. Various biomarkers have been used to determine the prognosis of SSNHL. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the relationship between the different biomarkers and the prognosis of SSNHL. We searched English-language literature up to October 2022 in four databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane, and Science Direct. This search was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. This study was reported in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (ID = CRD42022369538). All studies examining the role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) concluded that higher NLR is associated with a worse prognosis. The results of studies regarding the relationship between platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) are controversial. Other factors shown to be associated with SSNHL include Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), blood glucose, iron levels, serum endocan, salusin-beta, and bone turnover biomarkers. Introduction: Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet/ lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are readily available and inexpensive biomarkers that have received great attention for diagnosing type 2 diabetes(T2DM) complications. The objective of the present cross-sectional study was to compare diagnostic values of these biomarkers with C-reactive protein(CRP) in detecting diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) and osteomyelitis (OS) and discriminating between the degree of DFU according to Wagner's classification., Methods: A total of 217 individuals (42 healthy controls, 40 T2DM patients without DFU, and 135 patients with DFU) were enrolled. The DFU patients were classified according to Wagner's classification into grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3. Blood samples were obtained and various biochemical and hematological parameters including creatine, CRP, HbA1c, NLR, and PLR were measured., Results: The levels of CRP, PLR, and NLR were significantly higher in the patients with DFU and OS compared to healthy controls and T2DM patients without DFU. The median values of CRP were correlated with the severity of DFU and increased with DFU grades. The highest values of CRP, NLR, and PLR were observed in the DFU patients with OS which were significantly higher than those of DFU patients with grades 1 and 2 as well as T2DM patients without DFU. Background: The pathogenesis of depression has not yet been fully understood. The association between platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and depression has been investigated in previous studies, however, the results were controversial. The objective of the study was to explore the potential relationship between PLR and depression and symptom severity., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2005 to 2018. Totally 30,032 adults were analyzed, and 2480 reported depression. Depression and symptom severity were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). PLR was calculated as the ratio of platelets to lymphocytes. Multivariable weighted-logistic regression models and generalized additive model (GAM) were employed to evaluate the linear and nonlinear association between PLR and depression and symptom severity., Results: There was a negative association for Q3 (odds ratio [OR]: 0.82, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.68 to 0.99) when comparing participants for Q1 between 10-PLR and depression after fully adjusting the covariates; however, there was no significant association between 10-PLR and symptom severity. GAM showed that 10-PLR was associated with depression and symptom severity in a nonlinear manner. The inflection points were at 12.15. Subgroup analyses showed nonlinear relationships only in specific subgroups. Conclusions : PLR is associated with depression among adults in the United States. U-shaped nonlinear relationships and threshold effects were observed between 10-PLR and depression and symptom severity. Background: In recent years, several studies have investigated the relationship between platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and the prognosis of patients with laryngeal cancer, but the results remain controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of pretreatment PLR in patients with laryngeal cancer. Methods: Up to July 2023, we searched PubMed, PubMed Central, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI and Wanfang databases to collect relevant articles evaluating the relationship between PLR and the prognosis of laryngeal cancer. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using the random effect-model. Results: A total of 14 included studies involving 3220 patients with laryngeal cancer were included. The combined results suggested that elevated PLR was associated with poorer overall survival (HR = 2.21, 95% CI, 1.67 - 2.93, p < 0.001), progression-free survival (HR = 2.54, 95% CI, 1.76-3.66, p < 0.001), recurrence-free survival (HR = 1.87, 95% CI,1.45 - 2.42, p < 0.001), and disease-free survival (HR = 1.46, 95% CI, 1.08-1.98, p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis further confirmed that pretreatment PLR was an independent predictor of OS in laryngeal cancer patients. Conclusion: Higher pretreatment PLR is strongly related to poor prognosis of laryngeal cancer patients. This indicates that PLR has the potential to serve as a valuable biomarker for predicting the prognosis of laryngeal cancer. Background/aim: Immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory treatments developed in recent years as a result of a better understanding of the pathophysiology of systemic rheumatic diseases (SRDs) improve the prognosis. Despite medical advances, individuals with SRDs at any stage may require intensive care and have a high mortality rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with rheumatic diseases admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), and the factors associated with the risk of mortality., Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study that included patients with rheumatic diseases in the medical ICU. Factors of ICU 28-day mortality were identified by multiple-variable logistic analysis., Results: A total of 127 patients with SRDs admitted to the medical ICU were enrolled. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (32.3%) was the most common diagnosis of SRDs in patients admitted to the ICU. The reasons for admission to the ICU were combined infection and primary SRD flare-up (35.4%), primary SRD flare-up (22%), SRD-unrelated reasons (22%), infection (17.3%), drug side effects (3.9%), and SRD-related complications (0.8%). The most common organ dysfunctions before (49.6%) and during (77.2%) admission to ICU were in the respiratory system. The 28-day mortality was 78 (61.4%). While the maximum procalcitonin, serum lactate, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were higher in the nonsurvivor group, the platelet and serum albumin levels were statistically significantly lower than those in the survivor group (p < 0.05). Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of chemotherapy following immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). The association between inflammatory and nutritional factors and prognosis has also been investigated., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (RMHNSCC) patients who received chemotherapy following ICI therapy. The response rate and survival after chemotherapy, and nutritional and inflammatory factors, were examined., Results: The ICI before chemotherapy was nivolumab in 36 patients (70.6%) and pembrolizumab in 15 patients (29.4%). The chemotherapy regimens consisted of PTX in 32 patients (62.7%), PTX + Cmab in 9 (17.6%), and S1 in 10 (19.6%). The median overall survival (OS) was 20 months (95% CI 12-25), the estimated 12-month OS rate was 63.3%, the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 5 months (CI 4-6), and the 12-month PFS estimate was 8.9%. Univariate analysis significantly correlated Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), controlling nutritional status score (CONUT), and prognostic nutrition index (PNI) with OS and PFS. Additionally, these factors were significantly correlated with OS and PFS in the log-rank tests., Conclusions: Chemotherapy following ICI is highly effective. Objectives: Systemic inflammation has an important role in psoriasis, which is a chronic disease with an increasing prevalence and is associated with comorbidity. Our aim is to investigate the relationship of hematological parameters and C-reactive protein (CRP) with the presence and severity of the disease in patients with psoriasis. It is also to investigate whether it can be used as a biomarker in monitoring the response to systemic treatment., Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted with the participation of 139 psoriasis patients receiving biological therapy (BT) and conventional therapy (CT) and 140 healthy controls. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data of patients and controls were examined and all parameters were compared with the psoriasis area severity index (PASI) score. In addition, the changes in these parameters before the treatment and in the third month of the treatment were examined in the patient groups who received BT and CT., Results: White blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, monocytes, platelet (PLT), plateletcrit, red blood cell, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), CRP and erythrocytesedimentation (ESR) levels were higher compared to the healthy control group in psoriasis patients (p<0.05). Baseline PASI values were positively correlated with WBC, neutrophils, monocytes, NLR, MLR, and CRP. WBC, neutrophil, NLR, CRP, and ESR levels decreased in all patients in the third month of treatment (p<0.05). WBC, PLT, neutrophil, and NLR in patients receiving BT; while WBC, neutrophil, NLR, CRP, and ESR levels decreased in patients receiving CT, RDW levels increased (p<0.05). Adalimumab; NLR and basophil, methotrexate; WBC, NLR, neutrophil, and ESR levels caused a significant decrease (p<0.05)., Conclusion:  The fact that increased WBC, neutrophils, monocytes, NLR, MLR, and CRP levels are associated with the severity of psoriasis indicates that these parameters reflect systemic inflammation in psoriasis. Introduction:  Differentiating between bacterial and viral gastroenteritis is crucial in pediatric enteritis practice. Our objective was to use machine learning (ML) to identify acute gastroenteritis (AG) caused by bacteria based on blood cell counts and interview findings., Methods:  ML was performed using a decision tree classifier based on data from previously published papers. We included 164 children between one and 108 months diagnosed with gastroenteritis, with 112 having bacterial AG and 52 having viral AG as subjects and controls. Feature selection was performed using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and the classifier's performance was evaluated by five-fold cross-validation. Additionally, we presented a tree diagram of the decision tree classifier as a flowchart for practical applications., Results:  The area under curve (AUC) was 0.80, indicating a moderate model. Three important features in this model were platelet-lymphocyte ratio, eosinophil count, and leukocyte count., Conclusions:  In conclusion, this study demonstrates that bacterial AG can be estimated from blood cell counts with moderate accuracy. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are simple markers of systemic inflammatory responses. It has been previously suggested that they can predict COVID-19 severity. Age and frailty may also influence their values. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 severity versus age and frailty on NLR and PLR values. This was a retrospective, observational two cohorts' comparative study. The first cohort is comprised of patents positive for SARS-CoV-2, with mild or asymptomatic disease, admitted to designated COVID-19 departments in a large geriatric medical center (GMC). The second included patients with COVID-19 admitted to designated COVID-19 departments in a large general hospital for symptomatic disease from March 2020 to March 2021. We compared baseline characteristics including comorbidities and chronic medications, disease symptoms, laboratory tests and compared the NLR and PLR between the two groups. The 177 patients admitted to the COVID-designated department in the GMC were over three decades older than the 289 COVID-19 patients admitted to the general hospital care (HC). They had substantially more comorbidities and chronic medications. All common disease symptoms were significantly more common in the HC group. Almost two thirds of the GMC patients remained asymptomatic compared to 2.1% in the HC group. Inflammatory markers, such as CRP and LDH, were significantly higher in the HC group. The NLR and PLR were both significantly higher in the GMC cohort comprised of older frailer patients with milder disease. Introduction: The Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) have recently been reported as potentially useful indicators of inflammation. In this study, the authors investigated their predictive role for postoperative complications of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)., Method: This study was conducted on the medical records of patients who had undergone isolated CABG in 2019-2020 in Isfahan, Iran. The baseline clinical characteristics were obtained from medical records. The diagnosis of postoperative Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) was defined based on the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guideline. The postoperative bleeding amount was measured from the total chest tube output during the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission after surgery. NLR and PLR were measured by dividing the neutrophil and platelet counts by the lymphocyte count, respectively. All data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24., Results: Of 356 patients, data of 280 patients, including 219 males and 61 females, were recruited. The mean age among all patients was 63.78±9.07 years. There were no significant differences between the bleeding group and non-bleeding group regarding NLR (2.33(1.89-2.73) vs. 2.20(1.63-3)) and PLR (119.26(94.41-146.39) vs. 110.26(82.13-136.34)) (p=0.742, p=0.228 respectively). NLR and PLR were significantly higher in AKI-positive patients (P< 0.001 and P=0.002, respectively). Only NLR showed the potential ability to predict postoperative AKI in the crude model (P<0.001) based on the regression tests. Moreover, no significant correlation was seen between both NLR and PLR and hospital stay time, ICU stay time, and in-hospital mortality., Conclusion: The authors found that an increased NLR is associated with a higher risk for AKI after CABG. Objective: Immune checkpoint inhibitors are rapidly being used in solid and hematologic malignancies, including gynecologic cancers. The high mortality and relapsing rates of advanced gynecologic malignancies remain a challenging issue. This study aimed to identify the predicting factors associated with survival prognosis and disease control in patients with refractory/relapsing (R/R) gynecologic malignancies receiving anti PD-1 therapy., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 49 patients diagnosed with R/R gynecologic malignancies between July 2012 and June 2019 in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan. Among the 49 patients, 6 were excluded due to incomplete medical records or not receiving anti PD-1 therapy. The remaining 43 patients were further divided into responsive and non-responsive groups according to disease control for predicting prognostic factor analysis., Results: For the 43 cases, the median age at diagnosis and disease follow-up length were 54 years and 29 months, respectively. Among them, 23 (53%) were categorized into the responsive group, and the remaining 20 (47%) were categorized into the non-responsive group. The mortality rates were 17% and 25% in the responsive and non-responsive groups, respectively. The responsive group had significantly higher absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), higher absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and low platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) than the non-responsive group. Background: Previous studies have suggested that the ratios of immune-inflammatory cells could serve as prognostic indicators in ovarian cancer. However, which of these is the superior prognostic indicator in ovarian cancer remains unknown. In addition, studies on the prognostic value of the platelet to neutrophil ratio (PNR) in ovarian cancer are still limited., Methods: A cohort of 991 ovarian cancer patients was analyzed in the present study. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were utilized to choose the optimal cut-off values of inflammatory biomarkers such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and PNR. The correlation of inflammatory biomarkers with overall survival (OS) and relapse-free survival (RFS) was investigated by Kaplan-Meier methods and log-rank test, followed by Cox regression analyses., Results: Kaplan-Meier curves suggested that LMR<3.39, PLR≥181.46, and PNR≥49.20 had obvious associations with worse RFS (P<0.001, P=0.018, P<0.001). Multivariate analysis suggested that LMR (≥3.39 vs. <3.39) (P=0.042, HR=0.810, 95% CI=0.661-0.992) and PNR (≥49.20 vs. <49.20) (P=0.004, HR=1.351, 95% CI=1.103-1.656) were independent prognostic indicators of poor RFS. Objective: Placental abruption (PA) is an obstetric emergency. This study investigated the use of platelet indices in PA in its early stages to determine if it could aid in diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Sixty-two pregnant women with PA and 130 pregnant women who delivered due to idiopathic preterm delivery were included in this case-control study. Blood samples including platelet indices, biochemical, and coagulation parameters were obtained before cesarean section. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were recorded. Results: There was no significant difference between the groups as to hemoglobin, hematocrit, and white blood count. Platelet, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were significantly lower, platelet distribution width (PDW) was significantly higher in the PA patients. Conclusion: In the current study, MPV and PLR were lower and PDW was higher in PA patients. These parameters may be useful in assessment of PA.

Background: The aim of this study is to determine the prognostic value of the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and their dynamic changes on survival outcomes in metastatic colorectal cancers (mCRC)., Methods: The data of 199 patients with mCRC were retrospectively analyzed. To evaluate the temporal relation between the PNI, NLR, and PLR values and survival, pre-chemotherapy PNI, NLR, and PLR levels were assessed from peripheral blood cell counts on admission; post-chemotherapy PNI, NLR, and PLR levels were assessed with follow-up blood cell counts within two weeks after chemotherapy; and the difference between pre-chemotherapy PNI, NLR, and PLR levels and post-chemotherapy PNI, NLR, and PLR levels was evaluated as delta PNI, delta NLR, and delta PLR., Results: The median PNI, PLR, and NLR were 39.01, 150.2 and 2.53 before chemotherapy and 38.2, 146.6, and 3.31 after chemotherapy, respectively. The median OS was 23.7 months (95%CI:17.8-29.7) and 28.9 months (95%CI:24.8-33.08) for pre-chemotherapy PNI level < 39.01 vs. PNI level ≥ 39.01, respectively(p = 0.035) The positive delta PNI was significantly higher for OS than the negative delta PNI(p < 0.009). Delta PLR and delta NLR were not significant for OS and PFS(p > 0.05 for all)., Conclusions: The results of this study clearly show that the negative delta PNI to be an independent predictor of poor OS and poor PFS in patients with colon cancer who received first line treatment. Background: The serum systemic inflammation biomarkers have been established as predictors of prognosis in gastric cancer (GC) patients, but their prognostic value in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with GC has not been well studied. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative systemic inflammation biomarkers in Asian HIV-infected patients with GC., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 41 HIV-infected GC patients who underwent surgery between January 2015 and December 2021 at the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center. Preoperative systemic inflammation biomarkers were measured and patients were divided into two groups based on the optimal cut-off value. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were measured using the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test. Multivariate analysis of variables was performed using the Cox proportional regression model. As a comparison, 127 GC patients without HIV infection were also recruited., Results: The median age of the 41 patients included in the study was 59 years, with 39 males and two females. The follow-up period for OS and PFS ranged from 3 to 94 months. The cumulative three-year OS rate was 46.0%, and the cumulative three-year PFS rate was 44%. HIV-infected GC patients had worse clinical outcomes compared to the normal GC population. The optimal cut-off value for preoperative platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) was 199 in HIV-infected GC patients. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that a low PLR was an independent predictor of better OS and PFS (OS: HR = 0.038, 95% CI: 0.006-0.258, P < 0.001; PFS: HR = 0.027, 95% CI: 0.004-0.201, P < 0.001). Furthermore, higher preoperative PLR in HIV-infected GC was significantly associated with lower BMI, hemoglobin, albumin, CD4 + T, CD8 + T, and CD3 + T cell counts., Conclusion: The preoperative PLR is an easily measurable immune biomarker that may provide useful prognostic information in HIV-infected GC patients. Introduction : At the crossroads of heart failure (HF) and systemic inflammation, platelets and lymphocytes are both influenced as well as actively participating in the bidirectional relationship. The platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) could therefore be a marker of severity. This review aimed to assess the role of PLR in HF. Methods : We searched the PubMed (MEDLINE) database using the keywords "platelet", "thrombocyte", "lymphocyte", "heart failure", "cardiomyopathy", "implantable cardioverter defibrillator", "cardiac resynchronization therapy" and "heart transplant". Results : We identified 320 records. 21 studies were included in this review, with a total of 17,060 patients. PLR was associated with age, HF severity, and comorbidity burden. Most studies reported the predictive power for all-cause mortality. Higher PLR was associated with in-hospital and short-term mortality in univariable analysis, however, it was not consistently an independent predictor for this outcome. PLR > 272.9 associated an adjusted HR of 3.22 (95%CI 1.56 - 5.68, p<0.001) for 30-day fatality. During long-term follow-up from 6 months to 5 years, PLR was an independent predictor of mortality in most studies, with cut-off values ranging from > 150 to > 194.97 and adjusted HR from 1.47 (95%CI 1.06 - 2.03, p=0.019) to 5.65 (95%CI 2.47-12.96, p<0.001). PLR > 173.09 had an adjusted OR 2.89 (95%CI 1.17-7.09, p=0.021) for predicting response to cardiac resynchronization therapy. PLR was not associated with outcomes after cardiac transplant or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Background: We aimed to examine the hematological parameters of pregnant patients with ureteral stones that require intervention., Methods: Medical data of patients presenting to urology department between October 2018 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with flank pain associated with hydronephrosis were included in the study and divided into two groups according to whether an intervention was performed or not (Group-1, Group-2). Ureterorenoscopy (URS) or ureteral stent placement was performed as intervention. Demographic data, complete blood count (CBC), urine analysis, and ultrasonographic findings were collected. Gestational age (week), number of pregnancies, maternal age (years), Anteroposterior pelvis diameter (mm), VAS (Visual Analog Scale) (range 1-10) and mean platelet volume (MPV) were collected from the patient file. Inflammatory markers including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were computed., Results: About 35 patients were included in Group-1 and 52 patients in Group-2. Ureterorenoscopy was performed in 21/35 (60%) patients, and ureteral stents were placed in 14/35 (40%) patients. None of the patients experienced complications. There was no statistical difference between these two groups in terms of maternal age, gestational age, number of pregnancies, pelvis diameter, PLR, and MPV. VAS and NLR were statistically higher in group-1 ( p  < 0.05). According to the Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis performed for the prediction of ureteral stone presence, the best cut-off point for the NLR 4.153 (sensitivity 80%, specificity 80.6%, area under curve (AUC): 0.824)., Conclusions: We think that NLR can be used to determine the group that needs to be intervented due to ureteral stones in patients with symptomatic hydronephrosis during pregnancy.

Objectives: Data are limited regarding the relationship of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet/ lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with neurological symptoms (NS) in COVID-19 patients. This study is the first to assess the utility of the NLR, MLR, and PLR for predicting COVID-19 severity in infected patients with NS., Materials and Methods: Consecutive 192 PCR-positive COVID-19 patients with NS were included in this cross-sectional and prospective study. The patients were classified into the non-severe and severe groups. We analyzed routinely complete blood count in these groups in terms of COVID-19 disease severity., Results: Advanced age, a higher body mass index, and comorbidities were significantly more common in the severe group ( P < 0.001). Among the NS, anosmia ( P = 0.001) and memory loss ( P = 0.041) were significantly more common in the non-severe group. In the severe group, the lymphocytes and monocyte counts and the hemoglobin level were significantly lower, while the neutrophil count, NLR, and PLR were significantly higher (all P < 0.001). In the multivariate model, advanced age and a higher neutrophil count were independently associated with severe disease (both P < 0.001) but the NLR and PLR were not (both P > 0.05)., Conclusion: We found positive associations of COVID-19 severity with the NLR and PLR in infected patients with NS. Introduction: Considering the oncological outcomes, understanding the preoperative factors associated with and predicting advanced stage and T3a upstage will help in risk assessment and selection of the right treatment., Material and Method: Patients with postoperative pathology of Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) and stage T1-2 N0M0 were included in the study. Demographic and pathological characteristics of the patients, Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and De Ritis- the ratio of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were recorded. Patients were classified according to T stage (T1-2 vs T3-4) and T3a upstage (T3a upstaged vs non-T3a upstaged)., Results: A total of 289 patients participated in the study when inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. No difference was found between the groups in terms of age, gender, body mass index, laterality, ABO blood group, Rh positivity and comorbidities. According to multivariate analysis, PLR, AST/ALT, Fuhrman grade, open radical nephrectomy (RN) and Clear Cell pathological subtype were found to be significant-independent factors in predicting advanced stage (T3-4) and T3a upstage (P<0.05)., Conclusion: It was found that higher PLR and AST/ALT ratios were associated with more advanced stage and postoperative T3a upstage in RCC patients. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between the pre-treatment peripheral platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) with the efficacy and prognosis of radiotherapy for cervical cancer. A total of 110 patients with cervical cancer who received radiotherapy at our hospital from November 2017 to November 2020 were retrospectively analysed. The cut-off values of PLR and PNI were obtained using the receive operating characteristic curve (ROC) and the Youden index. The patients were divided into high PLR and low PLR and high PNI and low PNI groups. We compared the clinical characteristics, 3-year overall survival (OS), and progression-free survival (PFS) between the high and low PLR groups, as well as the high and low PNI groups of patients. Cox regression was used to analyse the factors influencing OS and PFS. The median follow-up duration was 26 months. The optimal cut-off value for PLR was 186.88 and that for PNI was 47.35. The 3-year OS values were 81.00% and 97.10% for the high PLR (PLR > 186.88) and low PLR (PLR ≤ 186.88) groups, respectively, and the 3-year PFS values were 59.50% and 88.20% for the high PLR and low PLR groups, respectively, with statistically significant differences ( p < 0.05). The 3-year OS values were 97.50% and 74.20% for the high PNI (PNI > 47.35) and the low PNI (PNI ≤ 47.35) groups, respectively, and the 3-year PFS values were 87.30% and 51.60% for the high PNI and low PNI groups, respectively, with statistically significant differences ( p < 0.05). Multifactorial Cox regression analyses revealed that high PLR value (PLR > 187.88), low PNI value (PNI ≤ 47.35), histological type, and FIGO stage were independent risk factors for the OS of cervical cancer. Pretreatment PNI values and PLR values can be used as simple and feasible predictors of clinical efficacy and prognosis for patients treated with radiotherapy for cervical cancer.

Introduction: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aim to analyze the current literature to evaluate neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) values among critically ill patients who develop delirium as compared to those who do not., Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were used to conduct a systematic search for relevant publications published before June 12, 2022. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used for quality assessment. Because a significant level of heterogeneity was found, we used the random-effects model to generate pooled effects., Results: Twenty-four studies including 11,579 critically ill patients, of whom 2439 were diagnosed with delirium, were included in our meta-analysis. Compared with the non-delirious group, the delirious group's NLR levels were significantly higher (WMD = 2.14; CI 95% = 1.48-2.80, p < 0.01). In the subgroup analysis according to the type of critical condition, the NLR levels in patients of delirious group were significantly more than those of non-delirious group in studies on POD, PSD and PCD (WMD = 1.14, CI 95% = 0.38-1.91, p < 0.01, WMD = 1.38, CI 95% = 1.04-1.72, p < 0.001, and WMD = 4.22, CI 95% = 3.47-4.98, p < 0.001, respectively). Background: There is still much unknown about the relationship between hematological parameters and vitamin D status in newborns. The aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between 25(OH)D3 (vitamin D) status and new defined systemic inflammatory markers neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in newborns., Methods: One hundred newborns were enrolled in the study. Serum vitamin D status, below < 12 ng/mL (< 30 nmol/L) as deficient, 12-20 ng/mL (30-50 nmol/L) as insufficient, and > 20 ng/mL (> 50 nmol/L) was considered as sufficient., Results: Parallel to maternal and newborn vitamin D status were also statistically different between the groups (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference was found between the deficient, sufficient and insufficient groups in terms of newborn hemoglobin, neutrophil, monocytes, NLR, PLT, PLR and neutrophil to monocyte ratio (NMR) (p < 0.05, in all). There was also a positive correlation between maternal and newborn vitamin D status (r = 0.975, p = 0.000). The newborn NLR were negative correlated with newborn vitamin D status (r = -0.616, p = 0.000)., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that there may be potential new biomarkers to predict inflammation associated with the inflammatory state that may arise due to changes in NLR, LMR, and PLR in vitamin D deficiency in newborns. Objective: This study was conducted to elucidate the predictive value of hematological indices, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV), to determine the clinical outcome of placental abruption in women regarding stillbirth., Methods: This retrospective review of medical charts was performed in a tertiary center experienced for maternal, fetal, and neonatal care, including 89 pregnant women with placental abruption with or without stillbirth. The results of the hemogram tests with hematological indices, including the NLR, PLR, and MPV, which are the routinely obtained parameters both at admission and 4 h postoperatively, were correlated with other clinical parameters., Results: The findings showed that although there were remarkable changes in some of the clinical features of women with placental abruption with or without stillbirth, in general, the study groups were found comparable regarding these variables. The values of NLR, PLR, and MPV in women with stillbirth presented remarkable changes when hemogram tests were used as pre-operative and post-operative laboratory examinations, although these changes did not correlate with each other meaningfully., Conclusion: Stillbirth is one of the most important complications of placental abruption requiring rapid diagnosis and regular follow-up after its surgical management. Introduction: Plasmapheresis is a frequently used procedure that removes the pathogenic components from circulation. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between plasmapheresis, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU) between 2014 and 2021., Methods: Forty-nine patients (27 females and 22 males) were included. Demographic characteristics, laboratory values of the day of admittance to the ICU, APACHE II scores, and length of stay were recorded., Results: The mean age was 52.73 ± 16.93. APACHE II value (p = 0.003; p < 0.01), NLR ratio (p = 0.001; p < 0.01) and PLR ratio (p = 0.001; p < 0.01) of the surviving group were lower than those of the deceased group, which was statistically significant., Conclusion: As high PLR and NLR levels suggest increased mortality in the ICU population, attention should be paid for increased NLR and PLR when plasmapheresis is decided on in the ICU., (© 2022 International Society for Apheresis and Japanese Society for Apheresis.)

Background: Accurately evaluating the lymph node status preoperatively is critical in determining the appropriate treatment plan for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. This study aimed to construct a novel nomogram to predict the probability of lymph node metastasis in clinical T1 stage patients based on non-invasive and easily accessible indicators., Methods: From October 2019 to June 2022, the data of 84 consecutive cT1 NSCLC patients who had undergone PET/CT examination within 30 days before surgery were retrospectively collected. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the risk factors of lymph node metastasis. A nomogram based on these predictors was constructed. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the calibration curve was used for assessment. Besides, the model was confirmed by bootstrap resampling., Results: Four predictors (tumor SUVmax value, lymph node SUVmax value, consolidation tumor ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio) were identified and entered into the nomogram. The model indicated certain discrimination, with an area under ROC curve of 0.921(95%CI 0.866-0.977). The calibration curve showed good concordance between the predicted and actual possibility of lymph node metastasis., Conclusions: This nomogram was practical and effective in predicting lymph node metastasis for patients with cT1 NSCLC. We performed a retrospective and observational study of patients with psoriasis. The aim of this study was to define the laboratory indicators reflecting the treatment response to tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitors and the predictors for the treatment response. From January 2010 to June 2022, 28, 15 and 12 patients with psoriasis were treated with infliximab (IFX), adalimumab (ADA) and certolizumab pegol (CZP), respectively. The values of C-reactive protein (CRP), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio decreased in parallel with psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) at weeks 12 and 52 of treatment. The percentage reduction of the CRP was correlated with that of the PASI at week 52 in all patients and subgroups treated with IFX. The percentage reduction of the PLR was correlated with that of the PASI at week 52 in all patients. Linear multivariate regression analyses revealed that the presence of scalp lesions was associated with a high percentage reduction of the PASI at week 52 in the ADA subgroup. The CRP and PLR might act as biomarkers reflecting the treatment response to TNF-α inhibitors in patients with psoriasis. The presence of scalp lesions might be a predictive factor for a high treatment response to ADA in patients with psoriasis.
