Tobacco smoke has numerous adverse effects on both human and animal health, including impaired reproductive function. Recent research has explored environmental exposure in dogs, investigating various biological matrices. However, no data are currently available on the presence of cotinine, a nicotine metabolite, in the canine ejaculate. This study aimed to evaluate the detectability of cotinine in the semen of dogs living with smoking owners. Additionally, seminal cotinine concentrations were correlated with those in serum and hair. To further examine the potential impact of smoking on canine fertility, the relationships between seminal cotinine, total sperm concentration, and antioxidant activity in plasma and semen were analyzed in exposed and non-exposed dogs. This study is the first to demonstrate the presence of cotinine in canine ejaculate and its correlation with blood and hair concentrations. While the potential toxic effect of cotinine on seminal parameters and male fertility in dogs requires further investigation, it is crucial to raise awareness among pet owners about the risks associated with domestic smoking for their animals.

The Open Databases Integration for Materials Design (OPTIMADE) application programming interface (API) empowers users with holistic access to a growing federation of databases, enhancing the accessibility and discoverability of materials and chemical data. Since the first release of the OPTIMADE specification (v1.0), the API has undergone significant development, leading to the v1.2 release, and has underpinned multiple scientific studies. In this work, we highlight the latest features of the API format, accompanying software tools, and provide an update on the implementation of OPTIMADE in contributing materials databases. We end by providing several use cases that demonstrate the utility of the OPTIMADE API in materials research that continue to drive its ongoing development., Competing Interests: G. J. Compliance with good research data management practices means trust in the integrity of the data, and it is achievable by full control of the data gathering process. In this work, we demonstrate tooling which bridges these two aspects, and illustrate its use in a case study of automated battery cycling. We successfully interface off-the-shelf battery cycling hardware with the computational workflow management software AiiDA, allowing us to control experiments, while ensuring trust in the data by tracking its provenance. We design user interfaces compatible with this tooling, which span the inventory, experiment design, and result analysis stages. Other features, including monitoring of workflows and import of externally generated and legacy data are also implemented. Magnetostriction results from the coupling between magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom. Though it is associated with a relatively small energy, we show that it plays an important role in determining the site of an implanted muon, so that the energetically favorable site can switch on crossing a magnetic phase transition. This surprising effect is demonstrated in the cubic rocksalt antiferromagnet MnO which undergoes a magnetostriction-driven rhombohedral distortion at the Néel temperature T_{N}=118  K. Above T_{N}, the muon becomes delocalized around a network of equivalent sites, but below T_{N} the distortion lifts the degeneracy between these equivalent sites. Our first-principles simulations based on Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory and molecular dynamics are consistent with the experimental data and help to resolve a long-standing puzzle regarding muon data on MnO, as well as having wider applicability to other magnetic oxides.

Cryptorchidism, the failed descent of one or both testes into the scrotum, is a common developmental disorder in male dogs. Cryptorchidism may affect canine fertility, reducing the quality of the semen, and may promote spermatic cord torsion and onset of neoplasia. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are epigenetic regulators of gene expression and their dysregulation is associated with disorders of spermatogenesis and testis neoplasia. The present study aimed at investigating the expression of miRNAs in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) canine retained testes and testes affected by seminoma, and at integrating miRNAs to their target genes. Forty testicular FFPE specimens from 30 dogs were included - 10 scrotal and 10 contralateral retained from 10 unilateral cryptorchid dogs; 10 tumoral testes affected by seminoma from non-cryptorchid dogs; 10 scrotal normal testes from non-cryptorchid dogs included as the control. The expression level of three miRNAs, namely miR-302c-3p, miR-302a-3p, and miR-371-3p, associated with testicular disorders, were quantified using RT-qPCR. The comparative analysis demonstrated that the level of miR-302a-3p and miR-371a-3p were quantifiable exclusively in control testes. The expression level of miR-302c-3p was higher in the control than in the other groups; its expression decreased in retained testes compared to scrotal testes and testes with seminoma. Gene Ontology analysis pointed out that these miRNAs may be involved in the modulation of estrogen and thyroid hormone signaling pathways. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are among the most promising candidates for beyond-silicon electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum computing applications. Recently, their recognized importance sparked a push to discover and characterize novel 2D materials. Within a few years, the number of experimentally exfoliated or synthesized 2D materials went from a few to more than a hundred, with the number of theoretically predicted compounds reaching a few thousand. In 2018 we first contributed to this effort with the identification of 1825 compounds that are either easily (1036) or potentially (789) exfoliable from experimentally known 3D compounds. Here, we report on a major expansion of this 2D portfolio thanks to the extension of the screening protocol to an additional experimental database (MPDS) as well as the updated versions of the two databases (ICSD and COD) used in our previous work. This expansion leads to the discovery of an additional 1252 monolayers, bringing the total to 3077 compounds and, notably, almost doubling the number of easily exfoliable materials to 2004. We optimize the structural properties of all these monolayers and explore their electronic structure with a particular emphasis on those rare large-bandgap 2D materials that could be precious in isolating 2D field-effect-transistor channels. Finally, for each material containing up to 6 atoms per unit cell, we identify the best candidates to form commensurate heterostructures, balancing requirements on supercell size and minimal strain.

Active and passive smoking in pregnant women is associated with perinatal morbidity and mortality risk, including abortion, preterm birth, low birthweight, and malformations. No data are available on intrauterine exposure to smoking during pregnancy in dogs. This study aimed to fill this gap by exploring the detectability and quantity of cotinine, the major metabolite of nicotine, in maternal (serum and hair) and newborn (amniotic fluid and hair) biospecimens collected at birth in dogs. For this purpose, twelve pregnant bitches, six exposed to the owner's smoke and six unexposed, were enrolled. A further six non-pregnant bitches exposed to passive smoke were included to investigate the role of pregnancy status on cotinine uptake. Exposed dogs, dams, and puppies had greater cotinine concentrations than unexposed ones. Although without statistical significance, serum and hair cotinine concentrations were higher in pregnant compared to non-pregnant bitches, suggesting a different sensitivity to tobacco smoke exposure during gestation. The present results provide evidence for cotinine transplacental passage in the dog. It is conceivable that fragile patients such as pregnant, lactating, and neonate dogs may be more susceptible to the harmful effects of second-hand smoke exposure. Owners should be sensitized to the risk of smoke exposure for their pets.

The adverse health effects of both active and passive tobacco smoke have been well-known in humans for a long time. It is presumable that even pets, which intimately share the owner's lifestyle, may be exposed to the same risks. This study aimed to detect and quantify cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine) in the serum and hair of dogs using a specific commercial ELISA immunoassay kit. A total of 32 dogs, 16 exposed and 16 unexposed to the owner's smoke, were enrolled. The cotinine concentration was higher in the exposed than the unexposed group in both matrices ( p < 0.001), with greater values in serum than in hair ( p < 0.001). Exposed bitches had higher hair cotinine than male dogs ( p < 0.001). Conversely, serum and fur cotinine concentrations were lower in female than male dogs of the unexposed group ( p < 0.01). The exposure intensity, age, and weight of the dogs did not affect cotinine concentrations. A cut-off value of 2.78 ng/mL and 1.13 ng/mL cotinine concentration in serum and fur, respectively, was estimated to distinguish between the exposed and unexposed dogs. Cotinine was confirmed as a valuable marker of passive smoking also in dogs. Although owners do not perceive secondhand smoke as a risk for their dogs, greater awareness should be advisable, especially in pregnant animals.

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is associated with morbidity, hospitalizations, absenteeism, and mortality among healthcare workers (HCW)., Aim: To evaluate the seroconversion rate in HCW exposed to SARS-CoV-2 in the early pandemic phase in 2020 at a regional reference hospital., Material and Methods: One hundred seventy-nine HCW working at a regional hospital were invited to a longitudinal study performed between April-July 2020. A serological analysis by ELISA IgG for viral nucleoprotein and protein S with a secondary analysis by ELISA IgG protein S1/S2 for samples with positive or doubtful result was carried out together with a complementary online survey to inquire about occupational or community exposures to SARS-CoV-2., Results: Two cases with baseline infection were detected (1.1%, one symptomatic and one asymptomatic) and no cases of seroconversion were detected. During the study period, there were 136 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, and regional weekly COVID-19 incidence ranged from 2.7 to 24.4 per 100,000 inhabitants. No SARS-CoV-2 cases were detected by PCR among 27 HCW who consulted for respiratory symptoms in the period. Online surveys confirmed direct care of COVID-19 patients and also detected a high degree of unprotected social interaction at work., Conclusions: There was no evidence of seroconversion in this group of HCW exposed to the risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2 during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Personal protective equipment and other measures used by the HCW were extremely useful for their protection in the initial phase of the pandemic.

Maximally-localized Wannier functions (MLWFs) are broadly used to characterize the electronic structure of materials. Generally, one can construct MLWFs describing isolated bands (e.g. valence bands of insulators) or entangled bands (e.g. valence and conduction bands of insulators, or metals). Obtaining accurate and compact MLWFs often requires chemical intuition and trial and error, a challenging step even for experienced researchers and a roadblock for high-throughput calculations. Here, we present an automated approach, projectability-disentangled Wannier functions (PDWFs), that constructs MLWFs spanning the occupied bands and their complement for the empty states, providing a tight-binding picture of optimized atomic orbitals in crystals. Key to the algorithm is a projectability measure for each Bloch state onto atomic orbitals, determining if that state should be kept identically, discarded, or mixed into the disentanglement. Birth weight (bW) is considered an indicator of neonatal maturity and a predictor of neonatal mortality. According to its importance, many efforts have been made so far to identify physiological body weight ranges at birth. Due to the high heterogeneity among breeds, optimal bW is difficult to define in dogs. The aim of this study was to carefully analyze the shape and pattern of the bW distribution in dogs. Furthermore, the role of breed on bW determination was specifically investigated in relation to maternal (age, weight, height, diet, season, litter size) and neonatal (sex, malformations, assistance at birth) aspects. For these purposes two canine breeds with very similar phenotypic characteristics, Golden and Labrador retrievers, were selected. An accurate statistical model to explore bW distribution and compare it between Goldens and Labradors was developed. At birth most of the Golden and Labrador pups (estimated 95th percentile) weighed up to 630 g and 500 g, respectively. The estimated 5th percentile of bW distributions was 295 g in Golden and 290 g in Labrador pups. These lowest values could be indicative cut-offs of underweight pups. The probability of neonatal mortality within 1 week of life decreased with increasing bW (P = 0.031) and was higher in Golden than Labrador pups even though this difference was not significant. Cryptorchidism is a common disorder in the canine population with some aspects still unclear. Although the bilateral condition is known to lead to fertility problems and predisposition to testicular cancer, the neoplastic risk for scrotal testis in unilateral cryptorchid dog is controversial. Therefore, the therapeutic approach to the canine unilateral cryptorchid is arbitrary so far. This study aimed to investigate precancerous testicular lesions, such as immaturity and atrophy, and compare them in scrotal and undescended testes using an in-depth diagnostic analysis based on immunophenotypic patterns. With this purpose, 26 adult male dogs of different ages and breeds, affected by unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism were enrolled. After surgical removal, testes were examined immunohistochemically to assess their positivity for specific markers of the canine foetal/neonatal period, that is vimentin (VIM), cytokeratin (CK), desmin (DES), inhibin-α (INH), and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in Sertoli cells, and placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) in germ cells. Except for the ubiquitous VIM, all the markers were more expressed in neoplastic gonads compared to healthy ones (P < 0.05). Similarly, testes detected with Sertoli cell-only tubules as well as with Sertoli cells hyperplasia showed higher expression than gonads without such alterations for CK, DES, AMH and PLAP, and for CK and DES, respectively (P < 0.05). The same trend was observed in undescended respect to scrotal testes even though their positivity was significant only for DES, INH and AMH (P < 0.05). Immunohistochemical positivity found in scrotal testes of unilateral cryptorchid dogs, even in absence of detectable anatomical abnormalities, was suggestive of precancerous lesions. Despite the limited sample size, this study could help to clarify the predisposition to neoplastic development in normally descended testes. Layered materials (LMs), such as graphite, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition-metal dichalcogenides, are at the center of an ever-increasing research effort, due to their scientific and technological relevance. Raman and infrared spectroscopies are accurate, non-destructive approaches to determine a wide range of properties, including the number of layers, N , and the strength of the interlayer interactions. We present a general approach to predict the complete spectroscopic fan diagrams, i.e. , the relations between frequencies and N for the optically active shear and layer-breathing modes of any multilayer comprising N ≥ 2 identical layers. In order to achieve this, we combine a description of the normal modes in terms of a one-dimensional mechanical model, with symmetry arguments that describe the evolution of the point group as a function of N . Group theory is then used to identify which modes are Raman- and/or infrared-active, and to provide diagrams of the optically active modes for any stack composed of identical layers. We implement the method and algorithms in an open-source tool to assist researchers in the prediction and interpretation of such diagrams. Our work will underpin future efforts on Raman and infrared characterization of known, and yet not investigated, LMs.

The Open Databases Integration for Materials Design (OPTIMADE) consortium has designed a universal application programming interface (API) to make materials databases accessible and interoperable. We outline the first stable release of the specification, v1.0, which is already supported by many leading databases and several software packages. This study aims to understand the extent to which a time of emergency, (e.g. the COVID-19 pandemic), impacts consumer behaviour in terms of risk and expectations. The methodology involves the systematic content analysis of 15,000 tweets collected from three countries (UK, Italy and Spain) in April 2020. The results suggest that the top-of-mind expectation by consumers deals with escaping from home and enjoying freedom, either by having a good meal (UK), drinking alcoholic beverages (Spain), or travelling (Italy). They also suggest that the high levels of risk individuals were exposed to during the pandemic will not influence behavior in the long-term post-lockdown. Instead, they suggest consumers are willing to restore their consumption levels especially of activities that contribute to the sense of escapism. Finally, results provide evidence of the cultural differences emerging from consumers from different countries during the pandemic. The ever-growing availability of computing power and the sustained development of advanced computational methods have contributed much to recent scientific progress. These developments present new challenges driven by the sheer amount of calculations and data to manage. Next-generation exascale supercomputers will harden these challenges, such that automated and scalable solutions become crucial. In recent years, we have been developing AiiDA (aiida.net), a robust open-source high-throughput infrastructure addressing the challenges arising from the needs of automated workflow management and data provenance recording. Here, we introduce developments and capabilities required to reach sustained performance, with AiiDA supporting throughputs of tens of thousands processes/hour, while automatically preserving and storing the full data provenance in a relational database making it queryable and traversable, thus enabling high-performance data analytics. AiiDA's workflow language provides advanced automation, error handling features and a flexible plugin model to allow interfacing with external simulation software. The associated plugin registry enables seamless sharing of extensions, empowering a vibrant user community dedicated to making simulations more robust, user-friendly and reproducible.

Materials Cloud is a platform designed to enable open and seamless sharing of resources for computational science, driven by applications in materials modelling. It hosts (1) archival and dissemination services for raw and curated data, together with their provenance graph, (2) modelling services and virtual machines, (3) tools for data analytics, and pre-/post-processing, and (4) educational materials. Data is citable and archived persistently, providing a comprehensive embodiment of entire simulation pipelines (calculations performed, codes used, data generated) in the form of graphs that allow retracing and reproducing any computed result. When an AiiDA database is shared on Materials Cloud, peers can browse the interconnected record of simulations, download individual files or the full database, and start their research from the results of the original authors. The infrastructure is agnostic to the specific simulation codes used and can support diverse applications in computational science that transcend its initial materials domain.

Background: Y90 transarterial radioembolization (Y90-RE) may improve clinical outcomes of unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC); however, the optimal timing for Y90-RE is still debated. The purpose of this multicenter study was to retrospectively evaluate clinical outcomes of RE in patients with unresectable ICC, comparing three different settings: chemotherapy naïve patients (group A), patients with disease control after first-line chemotherapy (group B) and patients with progression after first-line chemotherapy (group C)., Materials and Methods: The study included 81 consecutive patients (49 male, mean age 62.4 ± 11.8 years): 35 (43.2%) patients were in group A, 19 (23.5%) in group B, and 27 (33.3%) in group C. Preprocedural clinical variables, tumour response according to RECIST 1.1 and overall survival (OS) were analysed and compared., Results: Baseline demographic and clinical features did not differ significantly among groups, with the exception of prior surgical procedures that were significantly higher in group C patients, and macrovascular invasion that was more frequent in group B. Radiological response was available in 79 patients; objective response and disease control rates were 41.8% and 83.6%, respectively, without significant differences among groups. Median OS was 14.5 months (95% CI: 11.1-16.9) and was not significantly different among treatment groups. At multivariate analysis, tumour burden > 50%, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (N/L) ratio ≥ 3 and radiological progression as best response resulted to be significant (P < 0.05) independent factors, negatively associated with OS., Conclusion: Y90-RE is a valuable treatment option in unresectable ICC, irrespectively from the timing of treatment. Tumour extension, N/L ratio and radiological response affect post-treatment survival.

The COVID-19 pandemic (that started in early 2020) is causing several disruptions in the short- and mid-term, to which businesses have to adapt. Some retailers have reacted to the emergency immediately, displaying a plethora of different intervention types. The authors aim to synthesize the challenges that retailers are facing during the COVID-19 emergency. Angiosarcomas developing in unusual sites such as the small bowel are rare, and fewer than 65 cases have been reported in the literature. They are not uncommonly associated with a known eliciting factor. Thus, among hitherto described cases of angiosarcoma of the small bowel, 16 were radiation-induced. One additional example of ileal post-irradiation angiosarcoma (PRA) in a 72-year-old female patient with a past history of uterine leiomyosarcoma is herein reported as a reminder of this causal association. Wannier90 is an open-source computer program for calculating maximally-localised Wannier functions (MLWFs) from a set of Bloch states. It is interfaced to many widely used electronic-structure codes thanks to its independence from the basis sets representing these Bloch states. In the past few years the development of Wannier90 has transitioned to a community-driven model; this has resulted in a number of new developments that have been recently released in Wannier90 v3.0. In this article we describe these new functionalities, that include the implementation of new features for wannierisation and disentanglement (symmetry-adapted Wannier functions, selectively-localised Wannier functions, selected columns of the density matrix) and the ability to calculate new properties (shift currents and Berry-curvature dipole, and a new interface to many-body perturbation theory); performance improvements, including parallelisation of the core code; enhancements in functionality (support for spinor-valued Wannier functions, more accurate methods to interpolate quantities in the Brillouin zone); improved usability (improved plotting routines, integration with high-throughput automation frameworks), as well as the implementation of modern software engineering practices (unit testing, continuous integration, and automatic source-code documentation). These new features, capabilities, and code development model aim to further sustain and expand the community uptake and range of applicability, that nowadays spans complex and accurate dielectric, electronic, magnetic, optical, topological and transport properties of materials.

Two-dimensional materials are emerging as a promising platform for ultrathin channels in field-effect transistors. To this aim, novel high-mobility semiconductors need to be found or engineered. Although extrinsic mechanisms can in general be minimized by improving fabrication processes, the suppression of intrinsic scattering (driven, for example, by electron-phonon interactions) requires modification of the electronic or vibrational properties of the material. Because intervalley scattering critically affects mobilities, a powerful approach to enhance transport performance relies on engineering the valley structure. We show here the power of this strategy using uniaxial strain to lift degeneracies and suppress scattering into entire valleys, dramatically improving performance. This is shown in detail for arsenene, where a 2% strain stops scattering into four of the six valleys and leads to a 600% increase in mobility. The mechanism is general and can be applied to many other materials, including in particular the isostructural antimonene and blue phosphorene.

Background: Complexity of robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) mostly depends on tumor size and location. Totally endophytic renal masses represent a surgical challenge in terms of both intraoperative identification and anatomical dissection., Objective: To detail a novel technique for marking preoperatively endophytic renal tumors with transarterial superselective intrarenal mass delivery of indocyanine green (ICG)-lipiodol mixture, in order to enhance surgical margins control during purely off-clamp (OC) RAPN with the use of near-infrared fluorescence imaging., Design, Setting, and Participants: Between June and July 2017, 10 consecutive patients with totally endophytic renal masses underwent preoperative ICG tumor marking immediately followed by RAPN., Surgical Procedure: Preoperative superselective transarterial delivery of a lipiodol-ICG mixture (1:2 volume ratio) into tertiary-order arterial branches feeding the renal mass prior to transperitoneal OC-RAPN., Measurements: Clinical data were prospectively collected in our institutional RAPN dataset. Perioperative, pathological, and functional outcomes of RAPN were assessed., Results and Limitations: Median tumor size was 3cm (interquartile range 2.3-3.8). The median PADUA score was 10 (9-11). Angiographic procedure was successful in all patients. Median operative time was 75min (65-85); median estimated blood loss was 250ml (200-350). No conversion to on-clamp PN or radical nephrectomy was needed. All patients had uneventful perioperative course; median hospital stay was 3 d (2-3). At discharge, median hemoglobin (Hgb) and percent estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) drop were 3.3g/dl (2.1-3.3) and 11% (10-20%), respectively. Surgical margins were negative in all cases. One-year median ipsilateral renal volume and 1-yr eGFR percent decreases were 11.7% (6-20.9%) and 12.2% (5.3-13.7%), respectively., Conclusions: We described a novel technique to simplify challenging RAPN based on ICG superselective transarterial tumor marking. Objective: The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness and complications occurrence of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in the treatment of osteoid osteoma (OO) in non-operating room anesthesia (N.O.R.A.)., Patients and Methods: From 2014 to 2017, 61 patients affected by OO (40 men and 21 women) with an age of 20.7 years on average (range, 4-51 years; 12 patients aged 20 years or younger) underwent computed tomography-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in N.O.R.A. (Non-Operating Room Anesthesia). Lesion sites treated were: femur (27), tibia (22), pelvis (2), talar bone (3), distal radius (1), and humerus (6). Mean follow-up time was 36 months. In each case, anesthesiologic support followed a new protocol (N.O.R.A. protocol), approved by our Institute. Primary success rate, complications, symptom-free intervals, and follow-up results were evaluated., Results: Pain relief (evaluated with Visual Analogue Scale - VAS) was significant in 97% of patients; it disappeared within 24 hours of the procedure in 44 patients, within 3 days in 10 patients, and within 7 days in 7 patients. After 6 months of observation time, 60 of 61 patients were successfully treated and had no more complaints. In 2 patients, two major complications were found: infection of the site treated, healed with antibiotics, and a nerve lesion, healed with steroid therapy. No other complications were observed., Conclusions: RFA is a highly effective, efficient, minimally invasive and safe method for the treatment of OO following N.O.R.A.

Purpose: Radioembolisation is part of the multimodal treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at specialist liver centres. This study analysed the impact of prior treatment on tolerability and survival following radioembolisation., Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 325 consecutive patients with a confirmed diagnosis of HCC, who received radioembolisation with yttrium-90 resin microspheres at eight European centres between September 2003 and December 2009. The decision to treat was based on the clinical judgement of multidisciplinary teams. Patients were followed from the date of radioembolisation to last contact or death and the nature and severity of all adverse events (AEs) recorded from medical records., Results: Most radioembolisation candidates were Child-Pugh class A (82.5%) with multinodular HCC (75.9%) invading both lobes (53.1%); 56.3% were advanced stage. Radioembolisation was used first-line in 57.5% of patients and second-line in 34.2%. Common prior procedures were transarterial (chemo)embolisation therapies (27.1%), surgical resection/transplantation (17.2%) and ablation (8.6%). There was no difference in AE incidence and severity between prior treatment subgroups. Median (95% confidence interval [CI]) survival following radioembolisation was similar between procedure-naive and prior treatment groups for Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage A: 22.1 months (15.1-45.9) versus 30.9 months (19.6-46.8); p = 0.243); stage B: 18.4 months (11.2-19.4) versus 22.8 months (10.9-34.2); p = 0.815; and stage C: 8.8 months (7.1-10.8) versus 10.8 months (7.7-12.6); p = 0.976., Conclusions: Radioembolisation is a valuable treatment option for patients who relapse following surgical, ablative or vascular procedures and remain suitable candidates for this treatment.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic applications. Yet, only a few dozen 2D materials have been successfully synthesized or exfoliated. Here, we search for 2D materials that can be easily exfoliated from their parent compounds. Starting from 108,423 unique, experimentally known 3D compounds, we identify a subset of 5,619 compounds that appear layered according to robust geometric and bonding criteria. High-throughput calculations using van der Waals density functional theory, validated against experimental structural data and calculated random phase approximation binding energies, further allowed the identification of 1,825 compounds that are either easily or potentially exfoliable. In particular, the subset of 1,036 easily exfoliable cases provides novel structural prototypes and simple ternary compounds as well as a large portfolio of materials to search from for optimal properties. For a subset of 258 compounds, we explore vibrational, electronic, magnetic and topological properties, identifying 56 ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic systems, including half-metals and half-semiconductors.

Liver transplantation (LT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the Milan criteria (MC) is nowadays a curative procedure. Yttrium-90 microspheres radioembolization (Y90-RE) has shown to be an effective and safe treatment of primary liver tumors. The aim of this work is to offer a view on the publications which report on the use of Y90-RE as bridge or downstaging prior to LT. Twenty articles have been considered for this world review. About 178 LT in patients were treated with Y90-RE prior to LT. Most of patients had a downstaging strategy. In all series alpha-fetoproteins decreased between Y90-RE and LT. In order to make results of computational scientific research findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable, it is necessary to decorate them with standardised metadata. However, there are a number of technical and practical challenges that make this process difficult to achieve in practice. Here the implementation of a protocol is presented to tag crystal structures with their computed properties, without the need of human intervention to curate the data. This protocol leverages the capabilities of AiiDA, an open-source platform to manage and automate scientific computational workflows, and the TCOD, an open-access database storing computed materials properties using a well-defined and exhaustive ontology. Based on these, the complete procedure to deposit computed data in the TCOD database is automated. All relevant metadata are extracted from the full provenance information that AiiDA tracks and stores automatically while managing the calculations. Such a protocol also enables reproducibility of scientific data in the field of computational materials science. As a proof of concept, the AiiDA-TCOD interface is used to deposit 170 theoretical structures together with their computed properties and their full provenance graphs, consisting in over 4600 AiiDA nodes.

Background: Yttrium-90 microspheres radioembolization (Y90-RE) has shown to be an effective and safe treatment of primary liver tumors. According to the staging system of the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC), patients with macrovascular invasion are staged as BCLC-C. This paper comprises a presentation of the results following application of the procedure., Methods: From January 2002 to December 2015, 367 patients were transplanted at the San Camillo Hospital Center. One hundred and forty-three patients were transplanted for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and in 22 cases patients were treated with Y90-RE before liver transplantation (LT), of them 4 with macrovascular invasion were included in this study., Results: The four patients had a complete response for the thrombosis, and were included in the waiting list within the Milan criteria. Means interval time between Y90-RE and LT was 15.86 months. No patient death was observed at Y90-RE procedure or at LT. We obtain a free-survival of 39.1 (range, 6-76) months. In all four cases the complete thrombosis regression was observed., Conclusions: We reported a short series of patients transplanted after Y90-RE in patients with BCLC stage C. In our experience we achieved acceptable overall and disease-free survival. Background: Liver transplantation (LT) is a well-established procedure for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) within the Milan criteria. Yttrium-90 microspheres radioembolization (Y90-RE) has shown to be an effective and safe treatment of primary liver tumors. We retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of the Y90-RE in patients with HCC prior to LT., Methods: From January 2002 to December 2015, 365 patients were transplanted at the San Camillo Hospital Center. One hundred forty-three patients were transplanted for HCC, and in 22 cases the patients were treated with Y90-RE before LT., Results: Three patients were treated with Y90-RE within the Milan criteria, and 19 patients were out of criteria before Y90-RE. Four patients had an increasing MELD score between Y90-RE and LT. On the other hand, alpha-fetoprotein decreases after Y90-RE treatment in all cases. No patient death was observed in Y90-RE procedure or at LT. In 78.9 % of cases, a successful downstaging was observed, and in 100 % of cases bridging was achieved. From Y90-RE treatment overall survival was 43.9 months. From LT, overall mean survival was 30.2 months with a free survival of 29.6 months. The overall survival after LT analysis between the patients treated with Y90-RE and patients without was not significant (p = 0.113). Free survival analysis was not significant (p = 0.897) between the two populations., Conclusions: We successfully performed LT in patients after Y90-RE treatment both as bridging and downstaging for HCC and obtained a similar overall and free survival of LT for HCC within Milan criteria. Y90-RE becomes a real option to provide curative therapy for patients who traditionally are not considered eligible for surgery.

In the race towards high-performance ultra-scaled devices, two-dimensional materials offer an alternative paradigm thanks to their atomic thickness suppressing short-channel effects. It is thus urgent to study the most promising candidates in realistic configurations, and here we present detailed multiscale simulations of field-effect transistors based on arsenene and antimonene monolayers as channels. The accuracy of first-principles approaches in describing electronic properties is combined with the efficiency of tight-binding Hamiltonians based on maximally localized Wannier functions to compute the transport properties of the devices. These simulations provide for the first time estimates on the upper limits for the electron and hole mobilities in the Takagi's approximation, including spin-orbit and multi-valley effects, and demonstrate that ultra-scaled devices in the sub-10-nm scale show a performance that is compliant with industry requirements.

Primary venous leiomyosarcoma is very rare and first description was made by Perl in 1871. Most cases are from venous system and half of them are reported to originate in inferior vena cava. We report the case of a 77-year-old Caucasian man with a leiomyosarcoma of the femoral vein. A leg preservation surgery was decided. Eight months later, the patient died of tumor progression. A PubMed search using the terms "leiomyosarcoma femoral vein" and "leiomyosarcoma vein" was performed. All cases of composite iliac-femoral leiomyosarcoma were excluded, and as far as possible, only well-documented cases were included. Median age was 55 years, seven men and six women, tumor resection was performed by six authors, six others performed a vascular resection, and one preferred for a thigh excision. Prognosis remains poor if metastasis is present, and in these cases, a conservative surgery is recommended to preserve patients' quality of life.

Unprecedented and fascinating phenomena have been recently observed at oxide interfaces between centrosymmetric cubic materials, where polar discontinuities can give rise to polarization charges and electric fields that drive a metal-insulator transition and the appearance of a two-dimensional electron gas. Lower-dimensional analogues are possible, and honeycomb lattices offer a fertile playground, thanks to their versatility and the extensive ongoing experimental efforts in graphene and related materials. Here we suggest different realistic pathways to engineer polar discontinuities in honeycomb lattices and support these suggestions with extensive first-principles calculations. Several approaches are discussed, based on (i) nanoribbons, where a polar discontinuity against the vacuum emerges, and (ii) functionalizations, where covalent ligands are used to engineer polar discontinuities by selective or total functionalization of the parent systems. All the cases considered have the potential to deliver innovative applications in ultra-thin and flexible solar-energy devices and in micro- and nano-electronics.

Aim: The purpose of the present study was to characterize the morphological features of thymoma metastases in lymph nodes and to evaluate the possibility of their subtyping according to the 2004 WHO classification of thymus tumors., Materials and Methods: We reviewed 210 thymoma cases in our series of thymic epithelial tumors (TET), including their recurrences and lymphogenous metastases. Three cases of lymph node metastases, one case occurring synchronously with the primary tumor and one synchronously with the first relapse (both in intrathoracic location) and one case of metastasis observed in a laterocervical lymph node subsequently to two thymoma relapses were found., Results: The metastatic nodes were variably but extensively involved in all cases. The histological features were similar in both primary tumors and metastases. Thymoma metastases were subtyped according to the WHO classification as B3 (one case) and B2 (two cases), and distinctive features in comparison to metastatic epithelial neoplasias from other sites were observed., Conclusion: Thymoma lymph node metastases, although rare, can be subtyped according to the WHO classification on the basis of their morphological and immunohistochemical features. Clinically, the presence of nodal metastases may herald subsequent relapses and further metastases even in extrathoracic sites.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the radiation dose in patients undergoing liver angiographic procedure and verify the usefulness of different dose measurements to prevent deterministic effects. Gafchromic film, MicroMOSFET data and DIAMENTOR device of the X-ray system were used to characterize the examined interventional radiology (IR) procedure., Materials and Methods: A liver embolization procedure, the SIRT (Selective Internal Radiation Therapy), was investigated. The exposure parameters from the DIAMENTOR as well as patient and geometrical data were registered. Entrance skin dose map obtained using Gafchromic film (ESDGAF) in a standard phantom as well as in 12 patients were used to calculate the maximum skin dose (MSDGAF). MicroMOSFETs were used to assess ESD in relevant points/areas. Moreover, the maximum value of five MicroMOSFETs array, due to the extension of treated area and to the relative distance of 2-3 cm of two adjacent MicroMOSFETs, was useful to predict the MSD without interfering with the clinical practice. PCXMC vers.1.5 was used to calculate effective dose (E) and equivalent dose (H)., Results: The mean dose-area product (DAPDIAMENTOR) for SIRT procedures was 166 Gycm2, although a wide range was observed. The mean MSDGAF for SIRT procedures was 1090 mGy, although a wide range was experienced. A correlation was found between the MSDGAF measured on a patient and the DAPDIAMENTOR value for liver embolizations. MOSFET and Gafchromic data were in agreement within 5% in homogeneous area and within 20% in high dose gradient regions. The mean equivalent dose in critical organs was 89.8 mSv for kidneys, 22.9 mSv for pancreas, 20.2 mSv for small intestine and 21.0 mSv for spleen. Whereas the mean E was 3.7 mSv (range: 0.5-13.7)., Conclusions: Gafchromic films result useful to study patient exposure and determine localization and amplitude of high dose skin areas to better predict the skin injuries. Then, DAPDIAMENTOR or MOSFET data could offer real-time methods, as on-line dose alert, to avoid any side effects during liver embolization with prolonged duration.

Background & Aims: The European Network on Radioembolization with Yttrium-90 resin microspheres study group (ENRY) conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the outcomes among elderly (≥ 70 years) and younger patients (<70 years) with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who received radioembolization at 8 European centers., Methods: Patients with confirmed diagnosis of unresectable HCC who either progressed following resection or locoregional treatment and/or who were considered poor candidates for chemoembolization were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team for radioembolization with (90)Y-resin microspheres (SIR-Spheres; Sirtex Medical). The survival outcome and all adverse events were compared between the two age groups., Results: Between 2003 and 2009, 128 elderly and 197 younger patients received radioembolization. Patients in both groups had similar demographic characteristics. Many elderly and younger patients alike had multinodular, BCLC stage C disease, invading both lobes (p = 0.648). Elderly patients had a lower tumor burden, a smaller median target liver volume (p = 0.016) and appeared more likely to receive segmental treatment (p = 0.054). Radioembolization was equally well tolerated in both cohorts and common procedure-related adverse events were predominantly grade 1-2 and of short duration. No significant differences in survival between the groups were found (p = 0.942) with similar median survival in patients with early, intermediate or advanced BCLC stage disease., Conclusions: Radioembolization appears to be as well-tolerated and effective for the elderly as it is for younger patients with unresectable HCC. In a prospective multicenter phase II trial of radioembolization with yttrium-90 ((90)Y-RE) in chemorefractory liver-dominant metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), we showed that median survival was 12.6 months (95% CI 7.0-18.3) with 48% of 50 patients achieving disease control. In this extension retrospective study, we analyzed whether a panel of biomarkers, known to be associated to an adverse clinical outcome, underwent variations in CRC liver metastases pre and post (90)Y-RE.Of the 50 patients included in the study, 29 pre-(90)Y-RE therapy and 15 post-(90)Y-RE had liver biopsy specimens available. In these series we investigated survivin, p53, Bcl-2 and Ki-67 expression pre- and post-(90)Y-RE by immuhistochemistry (IHC). Our findings evidenced a decrease of survivin (77% vs 33%), p53 (93% vs 73%), Bcl-2 (37% vs 26%) expression as well as of Ki-67 proliferation index (62.5% vs 40%) on liver biopsies collected post-(90)Y-RE as compared to pre-(90)Y-RE. In the subset of 13 matched liver metastases we further confirmed the reduction of survivin (92.3% vs 53.8%; p = 0.06), p53 (100% vs 69.2%; p = 0.05) and Bcl-2 (69.2% vs 53.8%; p = 0.05) expression post-(90)Y-RE. This biomarker modulation was accompanied by morphological changes as steatohepatitis, hepatocyte necrosis, collagen deposition, proliferating and/or bile duct ectasia, focal sinusoidal dilatation and fibrosis.Although our analysis was conducted in a very limited number cases, these changes appear strictly related to the response to (90)Y-RE therapy and may deserve further investigation on a larger series of patients.

Introduction: Radioembolisation (selective internal radiation therapy; SIRT), as part of a continuous strategy contributed to the improvement in response rates and median survival for unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer. Therefore, the role of SIRT in the different stages of treatment plan was investigated in this review., Areas Covered: After a brief description of the principles of SIRT, the review focused on the clinical evidences of published trials on the current experience of radioembolisation and its role in both salvage setting and earlier lines of chemotherapy., Expert Opinion: Evidence from Phase I studies and small Phase II/III randomised controlled trials has provided an early signal of the safety and improved overall survival, which can be achieved with radioembolisation and chemotherapy compared with chemotherapy (alone), due to an improved liver control. In the salvage setting, interesting results were observed in term of response, toxicity and median overall survival. Until the results of these early-line randomised trials will be available, radioembolisation could be considered either alone or combined with an appropriate chemotherapy regimen following failure of first- or second-line therapy.

We hypothesized that redox analysis could provide sensitive markers of the oxidative pathway associated to the presence of an increasing number of cardiovascular risk factors (RFs), independently of type. We classified 304 subjects without cardiovascular disease into 4 groups according to the total number of RFs (smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, hyperhomocysteinaemia, diabetes, obesity, and their combination). Oxidative stress was evaluated by measuring plasma total and reduced homocysteine, cysteine (Cys), glutathione, cysteinylglycine, blood reduced glutathione, and malondialdehyde. Twenty-seven percent of subjects were in group 0 RF, 26% in 1 RF, 31% in 2 RF, and 16% in ≥ 3 RF. By multivariable ordinal regression analysis, plasma total Cys was associated to a higher number of RF (OR = 1.068; 95% CI = 1.027-1.110, P = 0.002). Total RF burden is associated with increased total Cys levels. These findings support a prooxidant effect of Cys in conjunction with RF burden, and shed light on the pathophysiologic role of redox state unbalance in preclinical atherosclerosis.

Unlabelled: Radioactive (90)Y-selective internal radiation (SIR) sphere therapy is increasingly used for the treatment of nonresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the maximum delivered dose is limited by severe injury to the nontarget tissue, including liver parenchyma. Our study aimed to implement radiobiologic models for both tumor control probability (TCP) and normal-tissue complication probability (NTCP) to describe more effectively local response and the liver toxicity rate, respectively., Methods: Patients with documented HCC, adequate bone marrow parameters, and regular hepatic and pulmonary function were eligible for the study. Patients who had pulmonary shunt greater than 20% of (99m)Tc-labeled macroaggregated albumin or any uncorrectable delivery to the gastrointestinal tract, reverse blood flow out of the liver, or complete portal vein thrombosis were excluded. Patients received a planned activity of the (90)Y-SIR spheres, determined using the empiric body surface area method. The dose distribution was determined using posttreatment (3-dimensional) activity distribution and Monte Carlo dose voxel kernel calculations, and the mean doses to healthy liver and tumor were calculated for each patient. Response was defined according to Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) and recommendations of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). Criteria were used to assess possible liver toxicities. The parameters of TCP and NTCP models were established by direct maximization of the likelihood., Results: Seventy-three patients were treated. With an average dose of 110 Gy to the tumor, complete or partial response was observed in 74% and 55% of patients according to the EASL guideline and RECIST, respectively, and the predicted TCPs were 73% and 55%, respectively. With a median liver dose of 36 Gy (range, 6-78 Gy), the >or=grade 2 (G2), >or=grade 3 (G3), and >or=grade 4 (G4) liver toxicities were observed in 32% (23/73), 21% (15/73), and 11% (8/73) of patients, respectively. The parameters describing the >or=G2 liver toxicity data using the NTCP model were a tolerance dose of the whole organ leading to a 50% complication probability of 52 Gy (95% confidence interval, 44-61 Gy) and a slope of NTCP versus dose of 0.28 (95% confidence interval, 0.18-0.60), assuming n = 1., Conclusion: The radiobiologic approach, based on patient-specific dosimetry, could improve the (90)Y-microsphere therapeutic approach of HCC, maintaining an acceptable liver toxicity.

The maintenance of a healthy corneal epithelium under both normal and wound healing conditions is achieved by a population of stem cells (SCs) located in the basal epithelium at the corneoscleral limbus. In the light of the development of strategies for reconstruction of the ocular surface in patients with limbal stem cell deficiency, a major challenge in corneal SCs biology remains the ability to identify stem cells in situ and in vitro. To date, not so much markers exist for the identification of different phenotypes. CESCs (corneal epithelial stem cells) isolated from limbal biopsies were maintained in primary culture for 14 days and stained with Hoechst and a panel of FITC-conjugated lectins. All lectins, with the exception of Lycopersicon esculentum, labelled CESCs irrespective of the degree of differentiation. Lycopersicon esculentum, that binds N-acetylglucosamine oligomers, labelled intensely only the surface of TACs (single corneal epithelial stem cells better than colonial cells). These results suggest that Lycopersicon esculentum lectin is a useful and easy-to-use marker for the in vitro identification of TACs (transient amplifying cells) in cultures of isolated CESCs., (Copyright 2010. Background: This multi-centre phase II clinical trial is the first prospective evaluation of radioembolisation of patients with colorectal liver metastases (mCRC) who failed previous oxaliplatin- and irinotecan-based systemic chemotherapy regimens., Methods: Eligible patients had adequate hepatic, haemopoietic and renal function, and an absence of major hepatic vascular anomalies and hepato-pulmonary shunting. Gastroduodenal and right gastric arteries were embolised before hepatic arterial administration of yttrium-90 resin microspheres (median activity, 1.7 GBq; range, 0.9-2.2)., Results: Of 50 eligible patients, 38 (76%) had received > or =4 lines of chemotherapy. Most presented with synchronous disease (72%), >4 hepatic metastases (58%), 25-50% replacement of total liver volume (60%) and bilateral spread (70%). Early and intermediate (>48 h) WHO G1-2 adverse events (mostly fever and pain) were observed in 16 and 22% of patients respectively. Two died due to renal failure at 40 days or liver failure at 60 days respectively. By intention-to-treat analysis using Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours, 1 patient (2%) had a complete response, 11 (22%) partial response, 12 (24%) stable disease, 22 (44%) progressive disease; 4 (8%) were non-evaluable. Median overall survival was 12.6 months (95% CI, 7.0-18.3); 2-year survival was 19.6%., Conclusion: Radioembolisation produced meaningful response and disease stabilisation in patients with advanced, unresectable and chemorefractory mCRC.

It is known that under a tensile strain of about 2% of the lattice constant, the energy of the bottom conduction state of bulk Ge at the Gamma point falls below the minimum at the L point, leading to a direct gap material. In this paper we investigate how the same condition is realized in tensile strained Ge quantum wells. By means of a tight-binding sp(3)d(5)s(*) model, we study tensile strained Ge/Si(0.2)Ge(0.8) multiple quantum well (MQW) heterostructures grown on a relaxed SiGeSn alloy buffer along the [001] direction. We focus on values of the strain fields at the crossover between the indirect and direct gap regime of the MQWs, and calculate band edge alignments, electronic band structures, and density of states. We also provide a numerical evaluation of the MQW material gain spectra for TE and TM polarization under realistic carrier injection levels, taking into account the leakages related to the occupation of the electronic states at the L point. The analysis of the different orbital contributions to the near-gap states of the complete structure allows us to give a clear interpretation of the numerical results for the strain-dependent TM/TE gain ratio. Our calculations demonstrate the effectiveness of the structures under consideration for light amplification.

Background: Various nuclear envelope derivatives, such as the annulate lamellae, the intranuclear tubules as well as the nuclear projections and pockets may be observed electron microscopically in tumour cells., Patients and Methods: In a series of eight gastric adenocarcinomas, ultrastructural features of nuclear envelope changes were analyzed and correlated to the biology of the tumours., Results: Histologically, three tumours were intestinal-type adenocarcinomas and showed annulate lamellae in the cytoplasm of some tumor cells. Five tumors were mixed-type adenocarcinomas, with a solid growth pattern; two of these tumours were characterized by the presence of intranuclear tubules, whereas the remaining three tumours exhibited nuclear pockets and projections. Seven out of eight patients died due to metastatic disease during the follow-up period (median 31 months)., Conclusion: Ultrastructural evaluation of pleomorphism of the nuclear envelope may be an ancillary method for the pathologist in the study of nuclear grading of gastric carcinomas.

Granuloma is a focal, compact collection of inflammatory cells in which mononuclear phagocytes predominate. The authors report 9 cases of papillary-tubular gastric adenocarcinomas characterized by mature granulomas associated with recent microhemorrhages. Mature granulomas were composed of foamy, CD68-positive histiocytes with occasional giant cells. Hemosiderin-containing macrophages were present in the tumor stroma, suggesting phagocytosis of erythrocytes. Under electron microscopy, mature (nonepithelioid) granulomas and clusters containing 1 macrophage and 1-3 eosinophils were found. This study provides morphological examples of skewed type II macrophage infiltration in gastric adenocarcinomas that is involved in scavenging activity, particularly erythrophagocytosis, formation of mature (nonepithelioid granulomas), and heterotypic aggregation with eosinophils.

Background: Angiogenesis requires complex multistep signalling pathways and a high degree of spatial and temporal coordination among endothelial cells and pericytes. The two cell types exhibit numerous contacts in vivo and in vitro, including the occurrence of peg-socket junctions., Materials and Methods: Ultrastructural findings in 9 cases of advanced gastric carcinomas were reviewed with special emphasis on endothelium/pericyte peg-socket junctions., Results: The incidence of peg-socket junctions was approximately 8% in 5 out of 9 cases. The remaining 4 cases showed a very low rate, including two cases in whom interactions were totally absent. Peg-socket junctions consisted of cytoplasmic projection from the pericyte protruding into the endothelial indentation. The endothelial cells interacting with pericytes showed ultrastructural signs of partial stabilization such as continuous endothelial lining, regularly constructed interendothelial junctions, more or less integrated pericytes, and multilayered basement membrane., Conclusion: Our ultrastructural study confirms previous reports regarding pericyte/endothelial peg-socket interdigitations in murine and human granulation tissues and extends these findings to the microvasculature of human gastric carcinomas.
