Background: HIV drug resistance can reduce the effectiveness of antiretroviral drugs in preventing morbidity and mortality, limit options for treatment, and prevention. Our study aimed to assess HIV-1 subtypes and HIV drug resistance among key populations in HIV Sentinel Surveillance Plus Behavior in 2018 and 2020., Methods: One-stage venue-based cluster sampling was used to recruit participants at hotspots identified for men who have sex with men (MSM) in 7 provinces and sexual minority females and female sex workers (FSW) in 13 provinces. Participants completed a standard questionnaire about risk and preventive behaviors, and antiretroviral therapy history, and provided intravenous blood for HIV testing. HIV drug resistance testing was conducted on HIV-positive samples with viral load >1000 copies/mL., Results: A total of 185 of 435 (42.5%) HIV-positive samples had viral load ≥1000 copies/mL, of which 130 of 136 from MSM and 26 of 49 from FSW were successfully sequenced. Six HIV-1 subtypes were detected (CRF01_AE, A, CRF07/08_BC, B, C, CRF25_cpx), with CRF01_AE (82.7%, 129/156) the most common. Drug resistance mutations were detected in 16.7% of participants overall (26/156), in 15.4% (20/130) of MSM, and in 23.1% (6/26) of FSW. Mutations associated with resistance to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) were the most frequently detected (73.1%, 19/26). The high level of resistance was presented in NNRTI and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors classes. There are 10 major resistance mutations detected with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (M184VI-25.0%, K65KR-50.0%, Y115F-25%), NNRTI (K103N-21.1%, E138A-10.5%, V106M-5.3%, K101E-5.3%, G190A-5.3%), protease inhibitors (L33F-40.0%, M46L-20.0%)., Conclusions: Vietnam's HIV Sentinel Surveillance Plus system identified an emerging strain of HIV-1 and mutations associated with resistance to multiple drug classes among MSM and FSW., Competing Interests: The authors declared no potential conflicts of interest concerning the research, authorship, or publication of this article., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. There is a controversy whether histamine H 1 -receptor activation raises or lowers or does not affect contractility in the human heart. Therefore, we studied stimulation of H 1 -receptors in isolated electrically stimulated (one beat per second) human atrial preparations (HAP). For comparison, we measured force of contraction in left atrial preparations (LA) from mice with overexpression of the histamine H 1 -receptor in the heart (H 1 -TG). We detected the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression of human histamine H 1 -receptors in HAP. In LA from H 1 -TG, each cumulatively applied concentration of histamine and a dual H 1 /H 2 -agonist called 2-(2-thiazolyl)-ethylamine (ThEA) caused a time-dependent initial negative inotropic effect followed over time by a lasting positive inotropic effect. Both effects were concentration-dependent in LA from H 1 -TG. After 100 µM cimetidine, 10 µM histamine exercised a positive inotropic effect in HAP that was diminished by 10 µM mepyramine, an H 1 -receptor antagonist. The concentrations of mepyramine and cimetidine used here are based on the work of others and our own work (e.g., Guo et al. J Cardiovasc Pharmacol. 6:1210-5 1984, Rayo Abella et al. J Pharmacol Exp Ther. 389:174-185 2024). Similarly, we observed that ThEA (10 µM, 30 µM, 100 µM cumulatively applied) induced a concentration- and time-dependent positive inotropic effect in HAP. In HAP, we detected never negative inotropic effects to either histamine or ThEA. The positive inotropic effects to ThEA in HAP were reduced by mepyramine. The positive inotropic effects of ThEA in LA from H 1 -TG and in HAP were not accompanied by reductions in the time of tension relaxation. We conclude that stimulation of histamine H 1 -receptors only increases and does not decrease force of contraction in the HAP in our patients., Competing Interests: Declarations. Purpose: This article aims to assess the impact of factors affecting the senses (via Sensory Marketing theory) on customer perceived quality and satisfaction when using health services in public hospitals. Based on the results, the research proposes solutions for public hospitals to improve the service experience to increase customer satisfaction in Vietnam generally and in developing countries particularly., Design/methodology/approach: The authors used 619 respondents' non-convenient probability sampling method, focusing on objects experienced with public hospital services in Vietnam. A preliminary quantitative study ( n  = 113) and qualitative research ( n  = 20) have been conducted to finalise the designed questionnaire before conducting a formal quantitative survey. Cronbach Alpha, CFA and SEM have been used to explore the meanings of the data collected., Findings: The result showed that through Sensory Marketing, sensorial stimulus (tactile, sight, smell and taste) significantly impacts customer satisfaction with medical services at the public hospital. Research findings are the premise to conclude that the application of the Sensory Marketing model creates a great sensory experience, and minimises negative psychological feelings in the medical, especially in a prioritised personalisation society., Practical Implications: The authors open up a new health service quality and satisfaction assessment tool based on the original human senses that were previously applied in researching other services, it has been proven to be successfully applied to specific service areas such as healthcare. Rationale: Current literature describes only 2 cases combining miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) with lingual appliances. These cases require 2 impressions, 1 before and 1 after palatal expansion, to ensure accurate lingual appliance placement, potentially increasing treatment time and cost. This case report aimed to demonstrate a modified workflow of combining MARPE and lingual appliances in managing an adult patient with anteroposterior and transversal discrepancies, requiring only a single digital impression for both fabrication and positioning., Patient Concerns: A 29-year-old female presented with anterior and posterior crossbites, a class III skeletal relationship, and maxillary constriction. The patient desired a nonsurgical and esthetic treatment approach., Diagnoses: The patient was diagnosed with a class III malocclusion with anterior and posterior crossbite on a skeletal hypodivergent class III relationship and upper posterior constriction., Interventions: Treatment included MARPE for skeletal expansion, digitally planned lingual appliances for tooth alignment, and lower arch distalization for class III correction. A modified appliance sequence was utilized for optimal expansion retention and lingual bracket transfer accuracy., Outcomes: The treatment successfully corrected the crossbites, improved dental and facial esthetics, and achieved partial skeletal correction., Lessons: The combination of MARPE and lingual appliances offers a viable treatment alternative that prioritizes both esthetics and effective skeletal expansion for nonsurgical and esthetic management of adult class III malocclusion with maxillary constriction. Beekeeping for honey production is a vital economic activity in Vietnam, significantly contributing to the nation's agricultural exports and poverty alleviation. However, the widespread use of pesticides, compounded by insufficient regulations, poses serious challenges to the industry and threatens bee health. This study examined the oral toxicities of five commonly used agricultural insecticides including bifenthrin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam, and chlorantraniliprole, on four honey bee species prevalent in Vietnam: the Asian honey bee (Apis cerana), the European honey bee (A. mellifera), the giant honey bee (A. dorsata), and the red dwarf honey bee (A. florea). Our results indicated significant variability in toxicity among the pesticides and honey bee species, with the managed species A. cerana showing the highest tolerance across all tested insecticides. In contrast, the wild species A. dorsata and A. florea were significantly more sensitive. Laws of physics shape adaptations to locomotion, and semiaquatic habitats of water striders provide opportunities to explore adaptations to locomotion on water surface. The hydrodynamics of typical propelling with symmetrical strokes of midlegs is well understood, but the subsequent passive sliding on surface has not been explored. We hypothesized that morphological and behavioural adaptations to sliding vary by body size. Based on empirical observations of water striders across a wide range of body size, we constructed a theoretical model of floating and resistance during sliding. Our model predicts that large water striders are too heavy to support anterior body on forelegs during sliding when their two midlegs are off the surface symmetrically during a recovery phase after stroke in symmetric gait. Heavy species should either (i) develop sufficiently long forelegs to support their anterior body on surface during symmetric gait or (ii) use asymmetric gait when one forward-extended midleg supports anterior body. Observations were consistent with these predictions. Additionally, medium-sized insects were observed to switch between symmetrical and asymmetrical gait in the manner that reduces sliding resistance. Our results illustrate how habitat-specific physical processes cause morphological and behavioural diversity associated with body size among biological organisms.

Introduction: The popularity of nonoperative management for acute appendicitis is based on the untested assumption that it offers a lower risk alternative to surgery in patients who are at high risk for morbidity and mortality with appendectomy. We hypothesized that patients who were at a high risk with appendectomy would also be at a high risk for complications following nonoperative management., Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with acute, uncomplicated appendicitis in the 2004-2017 National Inpatient Sample. We used a logistic regression model to predict the risk of morbidity or mortality following appendectomy and applied this model to predict the risk of patients managed nonoperatively. High risk was defined as ≥2 standard deviations above the mean predicted risk of morbidity or mortality. We used inverse probability weighting of the propensity score to compare outcomes of nonoperative versus operative management for high-risk patients., Results: The sample included 21,242 high-risk patients with a median age of 68 years (interquartile range 57-78), and 31% were managed nonoperatively. Compared to surgery, nonoperative management was associated with a 9% decrease in complications (95% confidence interval [CI] 7%-10%), 2% increase in mortality (95% CI 2%-3%), $10,202 increase in hospital costs (95% CI $9,065-$11,339), 3-day increase in length of stay (95% CI 2-3), and 9% greater likelihood of discharge to skilled nursing facilities (95% CI 8%-10%)., Conclusion: Nonoperative management of acute appendicitis in high-risk patients may reduce morbidity but increase mortality, duration of hospitalization, discharge to skilled facility, and costs. Brown macroalgae represent a sustainable and abundant source of lipids with acknowledged functional and health benefits. Nonetheless, macroalgae lipidome has been poorly unraveled due to lipids complex structural and chemical diversity. In this study, a comprehensive lipidomic analysis was performed in four macroalgae: Saccharina latissima, Fucus vesiculosus, Fucus serratus and the invasive Sargassum muticum, using HILIC-C30RP-HRMS. Neutral lipids (tri-, di-glycerides) comprised 72-82% of total lipids (TL) with a highly unsaturation profile (27-49% depending on species). The polar lipidome comprised glycolipids, phospholipids, betaine lipids and sphingolipids with varied content among macroalgae. S. latissima displayed the greatest level of glycolipids (23% of TL), by contrast with the dominance of long-chain polyunsaturated betaine lipids (10-18% of TL) in the other species, particularly in S. muticum. Phospholipids and sphingolipids were detected in low abundance (<1.7% of TL). Introduction: Human metabolomics has made significant strides in understanding metabolic changes and their implications for human health, with promising applications in diagnostics and treatment, particularly regarding the gut microbiome. However, progress is hampered by issues with data comparability and reproducibility across studies, limiting the translation of these discoveries into practical applications., Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the fit-for-purpose of a suite of human stool samples as potential candidate reference materials (RMs) and assess the state of the field regarding harmonizing gut metabolomics measurements., Methods: An interlaboratory study was conducted with 18 participating institutions. The study allowed for the use of preferred analytical techniques, including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)., Results: Different laboratories used various methods and analytical platforms to identify the metabolites present in human stool RM samples. The study found a 40% to 70% recurrence in the reported top 20 most abundant metabolites across the four materials. In the full annotation list, the percentage of metabolites reported multiple times after nomenclature standardization was 36% (LC-MS), 58% (GC-MS) and 76% (NMR). Out of 9,300 unique metabolites, only 37 were reported across all three measurement techniques., Conclusion: This collaborative exercise emphasized the broad chemical survey possible with multi-technique approaches. Recidivism risk assessment is crucial for effective case management of men convicted of sex offending. The use of empirical actuarial risk tools has become routine in the field. However, the development of actuarial risk scales for assessing general, violent and/or sexual recidivism in these men is ongoing: The Static-99 led to the Static-99R and the Static-2002R, and the BARR-2002R emerged to assess violent recidivism risk. A study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the inter-rater and predictive validity of the Static-99R, the Static-2002R, and the BARR-2002R in a sample of 328 men convicted of sex offending released from prison in French Belgium. When the instruments were considered integrally, the two versions of the Static-the Static-99R and the Static-2002R-proved better at predicting sexual recidivism and the BARR-2002R was better at predicting violent recidivism. And, the predictive and incremental predictive validity of the factor structure identified by Brouillette-Alarie et al. (2016) was examined. Terpenes in essential oils (EOs) have recently received significant attention due to their potential to improve brain and whole-body health. A deeper understanding of the terpene composition of edible EOs is important for fully exploring their possible applications. In our study, we employed a comprehensive study using four different methods to analyze EO samples, including GC-MS with solid phase microextraction (SPME), liquid injection (LI), derivatization to trimethylsilyl ethers (TMSE), and LC-MS. Our findings revealed that relying on a single analytical method may be insufficient for detecting all terpenes in EOs. Despite identifying a total of 156 terpenes in the samples, only 58 were detectable across all 4 methods. To obtain a more accurate terpene profile of EOs, we advocate for the combined use of LI-GC and TMSE-GC. Previous studies have demonstrated antiestrogenic and antiproliferative effects of these molecules in breast cancer cells. Notably, we have reported that pure synthetic glyceollins I and II act through various pathways, including ERα, FOXM1, AhR, and HIF pathways to inhibit cell proliferation and migration. In this study, the potential antitumor activity of glyceollins enriched in crude soybean extracts, obtained by solid fermentation with Aspergillus sojae, was investigated in vivo on MCF-7 breast cancer cells implanted in the chorioallantoic membrane of the chick egg and on ovariectomized nude mice. The first trial showed a substantial reduction in the migration of MCF-7 cells treated with the natural extracts. However, the natural extracts significantly reduced the estrogen-dependent growth of transplanted tumors in orally fed nude mice. Our results showed that natural soybean extracts slightly but significantly reduced estrogen-dependent growth of the transplanted tumors in orally fed nude mice. These results were confirmed by immunohistochemistry of Ki-67 and histone H 3 S 10 phosphorylation (H 3 S 10 P), revealing lower expression of these proliferation markers in the transplanted tumors from mice fed with the fermented extracts. Additionally, compared to the control animals, we observed a lower expression of angiogenesis markers such as CD31 and CD34. Surprisingly, transcriptomic analysis of RNA from transplanted MCF-7 cells revealed no differential gene expression. These results may suggest that orally consumed natural glyceollins exert biological effects throughout the body, acting indirectly to reduce tumor angiogenesis and consequently tumor volume. The quest for targeted therapies is critical in the battle against cancer. The RAS/MAP kinase pathway is frequently implicated in neoplasia, with ERK playing a crucial role as the most distal kinase in the RAS signaling cascade. Our previous research demonstrated that the interaction between ERK and MYD88, an adaptor protein in innate immunity, is crucial for RAS-dependent transformation and cancer cell survival. In this study, we examine the biological consequences of disrupting the ERK-MYD88 interaction through the ERK D-recruitment site (DRS), while preserving ERK's kinase activity. Our results indicate that EI-52, a small-molecule benzimidazole targeting ERK-MYD88 interaction induces an HRI-mediated integrated stress response (ISR), resulting in immunogenic apoptosis specific to cancer cells. Additionally, EI-52 exhibits anti-tumor efficacy in patient-derived tumors and induces an anti-tumor T cell response in mice in vivo. Nanozymes based on manganese oxide (MnO 2 ) are demonstrated to be promising probes in colorimetric sensing applications. In this study, the r-MnO 2 /β-MnO 2 heterophase nanostructure was simply prepared by a calcination process with controllable temperature. The characterization of the nanostructured material was confirmed by SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, Raman, TGA-DSC, and XRD analysis. The r-MnO 2 /β-MnO 2 exhibits a remarkably good catalytic activity in the oxidation process of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) compared with the r-MnO 2 or Mn 2 O 3 nanostructure owing to its heterophase junctions. The enhanced performance of the colorimetric sensor for ascorbic acid (AA) detection was investigated using the r-MnO 2 /β-MnO 2 heterophase nanostructure as probe. The r-MnO 2 /β-MnO 2 material enhanced the monitoring of AA in the wide linear range from 1 µM to 50 μM with a limit of detection of 0.84 µM. Dopamine receptors have been claimed not to directly increase contractility in the human heart. Therefore, we performed contraction experiments in isolated electrically driven human atrial preparations (HAP). For comparison, we performed contraction experiments with left atrial preparations of transgenic mice which harbor a cardiac overexpression of human D 1 -dopamine receptors (D 1 -TG). In D 1 -TG, first we noted that dopamine (10 nM-10 µM cumulatively applied) in the presence of propranolol exerted a concentration- and time-dependent positive inotropic effect in D 1 -TG. In a similar fashion, dopamine increased force of contraction in the presence of 0.4 µM propranolol in HAP and these effects were amplified by pre-treatment with inhibitor of phosphodiesterase III (1 µM) cilostamide. Moreover, contractile effects of dopamine in the presence of propranolol 0.4 µM in HAP were antagonized by odapipam, haloperidol, or raclopride. Ten micromolars of fenoldopam in the presence of cilostamide increased force of contraction in HAP and this effect was antagonized by SCH 23390. The utility of a universal DNA 'barcode' fragment (658 base pairs of the Cytochrome C Oxidase I [COI] gene) has been established as a useful tool for species identification, and widely criticized as one for understanding the evolutionary history of a group. Large amounts of COI sequence data have been produced that hold promise for rapid species identification, for example, for biosecurity. The fruit fly tribe Dacini holds about a thousand species, of which 80 are pests of economic concern. We generated a COI reference library for 265 species of Dacini containing 5601 sequences that span most of the COI gene using circular consensus sequencing. We compared distance metrics versus monophyly assessments for species identification and although we found a 'soft' barcode gap around 2% pairwise distance, the exceptions to this rule dictate that a monophyly assessment is the only reliable method for species identification. We found that all fragments regularly used for Dacini fruit fly identification >450 base pairs long provide similar resolution. 11.3% of the species in our dataset were non-monophyletic in a COI tree, which is mostly due to species complexes. We conclude with recommendations for the future generation and use of COI libraries. We revise the generic assignment of Dacus transversus stat. rev. Hardy 1982, and Dacus perpusillus stat. rev. Experimental access to cell types within the mammalian spinal cord is severely limited by the availability of genetic tools. To enable access to lower motor neurons (LMNs) and LMN subtypes, which function to integrate information from the brain and control movement through direct innervation of effector muscles, we generated single cell multiome datasets from mouse and macaque spinal cords and discovered putative enhancers for each neuronal population. We cloned these enhancers into adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) driving a reporter fluorophore and functionally screened them in mouse. The most promising candidate enhancers were then extensively characterized using imaging and molecular techniques and further tested in rat and macaque to show conservation of LMN labeling. Additionally, we combined enhancer elements into a single vector to achieve simultaneous labeling of upper motor neurons (UMNs) and LMNs. African swine fever virus (ASFV) has spread through many countries and regions worldwide, causing significant losses. Timely detection of ASFV-infected pigs is crucial for disease control. In this study, we assessed the performance of two pen-side tests: a portable real-time PCR (qPCR) test for detecting viral genomic DNA and a lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for detecting viral antigens. To determine the time from infection to the earliest detection, 10 ASFV-seronegative pigs were inoculated intramuscularly with 10 4.0 hemadsorption dose 50 of a highly virulent ASFV strain. Whole blood and oral swab samples were alternately collected from each group of five pigs daily until all succumbed to the infection. Samples were promptly subjected to the two pen-side tests upon collection, and a subset was transported to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory for analysis using a reference qPCR assay. Viral genomic DNA was consistently detected by the reference qPCR assay in all blood samples from 2 days postinfection (dpi), preceding the onset of clinical signs, and in oral swabs from 4 dpi onwards. The portable qPCR test demonstrated comparable performance to the reference qPCR assay for both whole blood and oral swab samples. The LFIA exhibited 100% specificity when testing with whole blood samples but showed reduced sensitivity, particularly for blood samples collected early or late after infection. Plastic pollution is becoming increasingly severe and is attracting global attention. One of its consequences is the recent discovery of micropollutant discharge into water, with Bisphenol A (BA-MP) being a typical example. This study utilizes an advanced oxidation process based on Pt-doped ZnO photocatalyst to remove BA-MP. Health concerns related to the release of BA-MP from plastic waste are discussed. Besides, the results of the photodegradation experiment show that the Pt-ZnO photocatalyst can remove 94.1% of BA-MP within 60 min when exposed to solar light. Moreover, after five reuse cycles, Pt-ZnO retains a high BA-MP removal efficiency of 71.2%, and its structure remains largely unchanged compared to the original material. The removal efficiency of BA-MP leaching from plastic waste was measured at 98.8%, confirming the suitability of Pt-ZnO for the treatment of micropollutants. Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and migration play critical roles in arterial remodeling. Citropten, a natural organic compound belonging to coumarin and its derivative classes, exhibits various biological activities. However, mechanisms by which citropten protects against vascular remodeling remain unknown. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of citropten on VSMC proliferation and migration under high-glucose (HG) stimulation. Citropten abolished the proliferation and migration of rat vascular smooth muscle cells (RVSMCs) in a concentration-dependent manner. Also, citropten inhibited the expression of proliferation-related proteins, including proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), cyclin E1, cyclin D1, and migration-related markers such as matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), MMP2 and MMP9, in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, citropten inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK and AKT, as well as hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) expression, mediated to the Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) transcription factor. Using pharmacological inhibitors of ERK, AKT, and HIF-1α also strongly blocked the expression of MMP9, PCNA, and cyclin D1, as well as migration and the proliferation rate. Finally, molecular docking suggested that citropten docked onto the binding site of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a well-known agonist of TRPV1. The adsorption of organic compounds onto metal surfaces holds significant importance across various applications, where understanding the intricate interactions between the compounds and the metal surfaces is indispensable. By using density functional theory calculations, this study investigated the impact of functional groups on the interaction between the thione form of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and the Cu(111) surface. The results indicated that substituting functional groups at the C6 position exerts a dual influence on the covalent and non-covalent interactions (NCI). Electron-donating groups enhanced both covalent and non-covalent interactions, whereas electron-withdrawing groups decreased covalent while increasing non-covalent interactions. The covalent interaction between MBTs and Cu(111) is mainly governed by the electron donation from the occupied orbitals of the molecules to the conduction band of copper, with the absolute interaction energies (eV) increasing in the order of MBT-NO 2 (0.629) < MBT-COOH (0.660) < MBT-Cl (0.699) < MBT (0.715) < MBT-SH (0.727) < MBT-OH (0.733) < MBT-CH 3 (0.735) < MBT-OCH 3 (0.749) < MBT-NH 2 (0.781) < MBT-NHCH 3 (0.792). The influence of functional groups on covalent interactions is clarified by examining changes in the molecule's electronic structure, revealing a linear relationship between covalent interaction energy and HOMO energy, or the Hammett substituent constant. However, the impact of functional groups on non-covalent interactions is more complex and cannot be described by changes in the electronic structure. A novel parameter, the substitution interaction energy, was proposed to capture the effect of functional groups on the NCI-included adsorption energy of MBT derivatives on the Cu(111) surface. The stronger the substitution interaction, the stronger the NCI-included interaction of MBTs on Cu(111). The absolute NCI-included interaction energies follow the order of MBT (2.141) < MBT-Cl (2.213) < MBT-COOH (2.266) < MBT-CH 3 (2.294) < MBT-OH (2.331) < MBT-OCH 3 (2.379) < MBT-NO 2 (2.461) = MBT-NH 2 (2.461) < MBT-SH (2.530) < MBT-NHCH 3 (2.565). These insights offer valuable guidance for manipulating the adsorption of organic substances on metal surfaces through functional groups in diverse applications.

Emotion recognition is central in prosocial interaction, enabling the inference of mental and affective states. Individuals who have committed sexual offenses are known to exhibit socio-affective deficits, one of the four dynamic risk assessment dimensions found in the literature. Few research focused on emotion recognition. The available literature, exclusively on individuals in prison who have committed sexual offenses, showed contrasting results. Some found a global (across all emotions) or specific (e.g., anger, fear) deficit in emotion recognition. In contrast, others found no difference between individuals in prison who have committed sexual offenses and those who have committed non-sexual offenses. In addition, no such study has been undertaken among forensic inpatients who exhibit socio-affective deficits. This study aims to investigate the recognition of dynamic facial expressions of emotion in 112 male participants divided into three groups: forensic inpatients who have committed sexual offenses ( n = 37), forensic inpatients who have committed non-sexual offenses ( n = 25), and community members ( n = 50), using the Signal Detection Theory indices: sensitivity ( d ') and response bias ( c ). In addition, measures related to reaction time, emotion labeling reflection time, task easiness, and easiness reflection time were also collected. Non-parametric analyses (Kruskall-Wallis' H , followed by Mann-Whitney's U with Dunn-Bonferroni correction) highlighted that the two forensic inpatient groups exhibited emotion recognition deficits when compared to community members. Forensic inpatients who have committed sexual offenses were more conservative in selecting the surprise label than community members. They also took significantly more time to react to stimuli and to select an emotional label. Alzheimer's disease is one of the causes associated with the early stages of dementia. Nowadays, the main treatment available is to inhibit the actions of the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme, which has been identified as responsible for the disease. In this study, computational methods were used to examine the structure and therapeutic ability of chemical compounds extracted from Millettia brandisiana natural products against AChE. This plant is commonly known as a traditional medicine in Vietnam and Thailand for the treatment of several diseases. Furthermore, machine learning helped us narrow down the choice of 85 substances for further studies by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations to gain deeper insights into the interactions between inhibitors and disease proteins. Of the five top-choice substances, γ-dimethylallyloxy-5,7,2,5-tetramethoxyisoflavone emerges as a promising substance due to its large free binding energy to AChE and the high thermodynamic stability of the resulting complex.

Aims: Anthrax is reported with frequency but poorly understood in Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam. In Vietnam, anthrax surveillance is national. However, case detection, prevention, and control are implemented locally at the provincial level. Here, we describe the epidemiological characteristics, identify spatial clusters of human anthrax, and compare the variation in livestock anthrax vaccine coverage to disease incidence in humans and livestock using historical data in Son La province, Vietnam (2003-2020)., Methods and Results: Most human cases occurred between April and September. Most of the patients were male, aged 15-54 years old. The human cases were mainly reported by public district hospitals. There was a delay between disease onset and hospitalization of ~5 days. We identified spatial clusters of high-high incidence communes in the northern communes of the province using the local Moran's I statistic. The vaccine coverage sharply decreased across the study period. The province reported sporadic human anthrax outbreaks, while animal cases were only reported in 2005 and 2022., Conclusions: These results suggest underreporting for human and livestock anthrax in the province. Intersectoral information sharing is needed to aid livestock vaccination planning, which currently relies on reported livestock cases. The spatial clusters identify areas for targeted surveillance and livestock vaccination, while the seasonal case data suggest prioritizing vaccination campaigns for February or early March ahead of the April peak. Background: The consequences of failed nonoperative management of appendicitis in older patients have not been described., Methods: We used the 2004-2017 National Inpatient Sample to identify acute appendicitis patients managed nonoperatively (<65 years old: 32,469; ≥65 years old: 11,265). Outcomes included morbidity, length of stay (LOS), inpatient costs, and discharge to skilled facilities. Differences were estimated using propensity scores., Results: For patients <65, nonoperative failure was associated with increased morbidity (7 ​% [95 ​% CI 6.9 ​%-8.1 ​%]), LOS (3 day [95 ​% CI 3-4]), costs ($9015 [95 ​% CI $8216- $9446]), and discharges to skilled facilities (1 ​% [95 ​% CI 0.9 ​%-1.6 ​%]) compared to successful nonoperative treatment. Sjögren's disease (SjD) is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease with no approved disease-modifying therapies. Dazodalibep (DAZ), a novel nonantibody fusion protein, is a CD40 ligand antagonist that blocks costimulatory signals between T and B cells and antigen-presenting cells, and therefore may suppress the wide spectrum of cellular and humoral responses that drive autoimmunity in SjD. This study was a phase 2, randomized, double-blinded, placebo (PBO)-controlled trial of DAZ with a crossover stage in two distinct populations of participants with SjD. Population 1 had moderate-to-severe systemic disease activity and population 2 had an unacceptable symptom burden and limited systemic organ involvement. All participants had a diagnosis of SjD, with 21.6% and 10.1% having an associated connective tissue disease (rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus) in populations 1 and 2, respectively. The remaining participants would be considered as having primary Sjögren's syndrome. The primary endpoint for population 1 (n = 74) was the change from baseline in the European League Against Rheumatism Sjögren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index at day 169. The primary endpoint for population 2 (n = 109) was the change from baseline in the European League Against Rheumatism Sjögren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index at day 169. The primary endpoints (least squares mean ± standard error) were achieved with statistical significance for both population 1 (DAZ, -6.3 ± 0.6; PBO, -4.1 ± 0.6; P = 0.0167) and population 2 (DAZ, -1.8 ± 0.2; PBO, -0.5 ± 0.2; P = 0.0002). DAZ was generally safe and well tolerated. Among the most frequently reported adverse events were COVID-19, diarrhea, headache, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, arthralgia, constipation and urinary tract infection. In summary, DAZ appears to be a potential new therapy for SjD and its efficacy implies an important role for the CD40/CD40 ligand pathway in its pathogenesis. Although recent advances in machine learning have shown its success to learn from independent and identically distributed (IID) data, it is vulnerable to out-of-distribution (OOD) data in an open world. Domain generalization (DG) deals with such an issue and it aims to learn a model from multiple source domains that can be generalized to unseen target domains. Existing studies on DG have largely focused on stationary settings with homogeneous source domains. However, in many applications, domains may evolve along a specific direction (e.g., time, space). Without accounting for such non-stationary patterns, models trained with existing methods may fail to generalize on OOD data. In this paper, we study domain generalization in non-stationary environment. We first examine the impact of environmental non-stationarity on model performance and establish the theoretical upper bounds for the model error at target domains. Then, we propose a novel algorithm based on adaptive invariant representation learning, which leverages the non-stationary pattern to train a model that attains good performance on target domains. Experiments on both synthetic and real data validate the proposed algorithm.

Machine learning (ML) methods are proliferating in scientific research. However, the adoption of these methods has been accompanied by failures of validity, reproducibility, and generalizability. These failures can hinder scientific progress, lead to false consensus around invalid claims, and undermine the credibility of ML-based science. ML methods are often applied and fail in similar ways across disciplines. Motivated by this observation, our goal is to provide clear recommendations for conducting and reporting ML-based science. Drawing from an extensive review of past literature, we present the REFORMS checklist (recommendations for machine-learning-based science). It consists of 32 questions and a paired set of guidelines. REFORMS was developed on the basis of a consensus of 19 researchers across computer science, data science, mathematics, social sciences, and biomedical sciences. REFORMS can serve as a resource for researchers when designing and implementing a study, for referees when reviewing papers, and for journals when enforcing standards for transparency and reproducibility.

Introduction and Importance: Abdominal ectopic pregnancy (AEP) located at hepatic region and pelvic-wall ectopic pregnancy (EP) are rare entities, that provoking a potentially life-threatening condition. Due to insufficient data, a proper management of non-specific types remains a challenge for all gynecologists worldwide., Case Presentation: Two child-bearing age women were hospitalized due to delayed menstruation and a urine pregnancy test was positive without a determination of intrauterine pregnancy. The first EP case was located at the pelvic wall which identified incidentally during laparoscopy for a presumed tubal ectopic pregnancy on ultrasonography throughout. The second EP case was found at the hepatic region due to intermittent pain rising from the right upper quadrant region and serial ultrasonic findings. In our management, both cases were successfully assessed by laparoscopy and laparotomy without requiring further intervention, respectively., Clinical Discussion: An accurate diagnosis of EP location at liver and pelvic wall is totally difficult since its uncommon location. An initial assessment should be based on clinical symptoms and the treatment remains controversial. The surgical management including laparotomy and laparoscopy depends on clinical evaluation, experience of surgeon, and interdisciplinary team. Thus, these abnormal sites of ectopic pregnancy ought to take into consideration for all gynecologists in an emergency condition with a major hemorrhage., Conclusions: In reproductive age women, primary EP at liver and pelvic wall should be considered with high index of suspicion if intrauterine pregnancy is totally excluded. Objectives: To compare maternal outcome measures in surgical management of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS)-the modified one-step conservative uterine surgery (MOSCUS), a new approach at Tu Du Hospital in Vietnam, versus cesarean hysterectomy, and to identify factors that appear to contribute to the successful outcome of the MOSCUS., Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at Tu Du Hospital in southern Vietnam between January 2019 and December 2020. The study enrolled all pregnant women at more than 28 weeks of pregnancy with a diagnosis of PAS who underwent either a cesarean hysterectomy or a uterus-preserving approach using the MOSCUS method., Results: The prevalence of PAS at our single tertiary referral hospital was 0.4% (619 PAS cases/132 518 births) in 2 years. Among 296 patients, the surgical time duration, estimated blood loss, and red blood cell transfusion in the MOSCUS group (n = 217) were all significantly less than in the cesarean hysterectomy group (n = 79) (152.72 ± 42.23 vs 185.13 ± 58.22 min, 1000 vs 1500 mL, and 500 vs 710 mL, respectively). Intraoperatively, the rate of visceral injuries in the hysterectomy group was higher than that in the MOSCUS group (P < 0.001). However, the rate of postoperative infection was higher in the MOSCUS group than in the cesarean hysterectomy group (P = 0.012). Of a total of 217 cases managed using the MOSCUS management, 24 required a secondary hysterectomy; the success rate was 88.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 84.3%-93.1%). Some of the primary factors associated with the success of MOSCUS included maternal age less than 35 years, planned surgery, severity of PAS, and estimated blood loss during surgery (odds ratio [OR] 5.16, 95% CI 1.96-13.59; OR 3.05, 95% CI 1.08-8.62; OR 3.62, 95% CI 1.19-10.98; and OR 49.66, 95% CI 11.16-221.02, respectively; P < 0.05)., Conclusion: MOSCUS is an acceptable alternative to cesarean hysterectomy in many patients diagnosed with PAS. This new surgical management of PAS resulted in the preservation of the uterus, and a favorable outcome in nearly 9 out of 10 pregnant women. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic remains a major public health issue worldwide. In Vietnam, the HIV epidemic is essentially driven by people who inject drugs (PWID). This study aims to compare mortality and loss to follow-up (LTFU) between PWID and other patients. From June 2017 to April 2018, HIV-infected adults were enrolled in a prospective cohort from time of ART initiation in six provinces of North Vietnam. The end date was July 2020. Mortality and LTFU were described using competing-risk survival models. Factors associated with mortality and with LTFU were identified using Cox models with a competing-risk approach. Of the 578 participants, 261 (45.2%) were PWID and almost exclusively male. 49 patients died, corresponding to a mortality rate (95% confidence interval (CI)) of 3.7 (2.8-4.9) per 100 person-months, and 79 were lost to follow-up, corresponding to a rate (95% CI) of 6.0 (4.8-7.4) per 100 person-months. PWID were at higher risk of death but not of LTFU. Overall, LTFU was high in both groups. Latecomers to clinical visits were more at risk of both death and LTFU. Therefore, this should be a warning to clinical teams and preventive actions taken in these patients. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03249493..

Machine learning (ML) techniques have shown great potential for screening corrosion inhibitors. In this study, a data-driven quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) model using the gradient boosting decision tree (GB) algorithm combined with the permutation feature importance (PFI) technique was developed to predict the corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE) of organic compounds on carbon steel. The results showed that the PFI method effectively selected the molecular descriptors most relevant to the IE. Using these important molecular descriptors, an IE predictive model was trained on a dataset encompassing various categories of organic corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel, achieving RMSE, MAE, and R 2 of 6.40%, 4.80%, and 0.72, respectively. The integration of GB with PFI within the ML workflow demonstrated significantly enhanced IE predictive capability compared to previously reported ML models. Subsequent assessments involved the application of the trained model to drug-based corrosion inhibitors. The model demonstrates robust predictive capability when validated on available and our own experimental results. Furthermore, the model has been employed to predict IE for more than 1500 drug compounds, suggesting five novel drug compounds with the highest predicted IE on carbon steel. Two planthopper species of the family Nogodinidae are added to the fauna of Vietnam, both from two localities in Thua Thien-Hue Province: Bach Ma National Park and Phong Dien District. The first species belongs to Goniopsarites Meng, Wang & Wang, 2014, G.mientrunganus Constant & Pham, sp. nov. , and the second belongs to Pisacha Distant, 1906, P.yinggensis Meng, Wang & Wang, 2014. Pisachayinggensis was previously recorded from Hainan Island, China. These new records greatly extend the distribution of both genera, which were known from southern China, Hainan and North Vietnam, to the south, reaching the mid area of Central Vietnam. Sexual dimorphism is reported in P.yinggensis for the first time. Illustrations of habitus and male terminalia of the new species are given as well as distribution maps and photographs of live specimens and their habitat. Introduction: We assessed trends in HIV and syphilis prevalence, HIV incidence, related risk factors, and preventive behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Vietnam from 2015 to 2020., Methods: Data originated from the HIV Sentinel Surveillance Plus system, which sampled MSM at venues and hotspots in seven of Vietnam's 63 provinces in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2020 ( N = 1100-1445 per year; ∼150-300 per province per year)., Results: HIV prevalence estimates increased from 6.6% (95% CI 4.5-9.6) in 2015 to 13.8% (95% CI 10.5-18.2, p = .001 for trend) in 2020 overall, and separately in An Giang, Can Tho, Hai Phong, and Khanh Hoa provinces but not in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or Kien Giang. Syphilis prevalence increased from 2.7% (95% CI 1.4-5.1) in 2015 to 12.6% (95% CI 8.7-18.0) in 2020 overall ( p < .001 for trend), and separately in An Giang, Can Tho, and Hai Phong provinces but not in Ho Chi Minh City or Kien Giang. We calculated time-at-risk from first anal sex to first HIV-positive or last HIV-negative test to estimate HIV incidence. Estimated HIV incidence suggested increasing rates of seroconversion from 1.36 per 100 person-years experienced by participants in 2015 to 2.61 per 100 person-years among participants in 2020 (hazard ratio per year 1.13, 95% CI 1.08-1.18, p < .001). There was a statistically significant increase in HIV testing, STI testing, and receipt of free condoms over the period ( p < .05 for trend), and a statistically significant decrease in amphetamine use ( p = .043 for trend)., Conclusions: Despite prevention efforts and improvements in some risk indicators, consecutive cross-sectional sampling results provide evidence of increasing incidence of HIV and syphilis among MSM in Vietnam, especially outside the major cities. Background: Soybean is one of the most cultivated crops globally and a staple food for much of the world's population. The annual global crop losses due to infection by Phytophthora sojae is currently estimated at $20B USD, yet we have limited understanding of the role of lipid mediators in the adaptative strategies used by the host plant to limit infection. Since root is the initial site of this infection, we examined the infection process in soybean root infected with Phytophthora sojae using scanning electron microscopy to observe the changes in root morphology and a multi-modal lipidomics approach to investigate how soybean cultivars remodel their lipid mediators to successfully limit infection by Phytophthora sojae., Results: The results reveal the presence of elevated biogenic crystals and more severe damaged cells in the root morphology of the infected susceptible cultivar compared to the infected tolerant cultivars. Furthermore, induced accumulation of stigmasterol was observed in the susceptible cultivar whereas, induced accumulation of phospholipids and glycerolipids occurred in tolerant cultivar., Conclusion: The altered lipidome reported in this study suggest diacylglycerol and phosphatidic acid mediated lipid signalling impacting phytosterol anabolism appears to be a strategy used by tolerant soybean cultivars to successfully limit infection and colonization by Phytophthora sojae., (© 2024. Breast cancer is a frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of death among women worldwide. Tumor-associated macrophages stimulate cytokines and chemokines, which induce angiogenesis, metastasis, proliferation, and tumor-infiltrating immune cells. Although interleukin-32 (IL-32) has been implicated in the development and modulation of several cancers, its function in breast cancer remains elusive. Mutation of interleukin-32θ (IL-32θ) in the tissues of patients with breast cancer was detected by Sanger sequencing. RT-qPCR was used to detect the mRNA levels of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and mediators. The secreted proteins were detected using respective enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Evaluation of the inhibitory effect of mutant IL-32θ on proliferation, migration, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and cell cycle arrest in breast cancer cells was conducted using MTS assays, migration assays, and Western blotting. A point mutation (281C>T, Ala94Val) was detected in IL-32θ in both breast tumors and adjacent normal tissues, which suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory factors, EMT factors, and cell cycle related factors. Mutated IL-32θ inhibited the expression of inflammatory factors by regulating the NF-κB pathway. Furthermore, mutated IL-32θ suppressed EMT markers and cell cycle related factors through the FAK/PI3K/AKT pathway. It was inferred that mutated IL-32θ modulates breast cancer progression. Mulberry ( Morus alba L.) is highly important crop in Vietnam, playing a key role in the country's economy through sericulture, food supply, pharmaceuticals, and beverage industries (Nguyen et al., 2018; Rohela et al., 2020). Recently, many mulberry-growing areas in Lam Dong, Vietnam have reported severe symptoms associated with nematode infection, including yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and severe root galling, leading to a significant decline in mulberry productivity. From April to December 2022, twenty soil and root samples from mulberry-growing areas in Lam Dong (Da Teh: 11°28'48.11"N; 107°28'23.74"E elevation: 133m; Lam Ha 11°48'25.13"N; 108°14'7.13"E elevation: 848m) were collected to uncover the presence of Meloidogyne enterolobii parasitizing mulberry in Vietnam. One nematode population was randomly selected for characterizing in this study among analyzed nematode populations. Females were extracted from heavily galled roots (Fig. S1) from a single mulberry tree in Lam Dong, Vietnam, using a needle and forceps (Subbotin et al., 2021). The perineal patterns of adult females (n = 10) have an oval shape, with clearly visible phasmids, along with a prominently high and squared dorsal arch. The striae are smooth and coarse, while the perivulval region remains devoid of striae. The lateral lines appear indistinct, and the tail tip is easily observable. Morphometric measurements were as follows: body length = 585 ± 78 (464-724) µm, body width = 367 ± 75 (271-529) µm, neck length = 221.5 ± 30.7 (167-269.6) µm, stylet length = 13.1 ± 1.2 (11.4-15.1) µm, vulva-slit length 16.3±2.3 (10.4-18) µm, vulva-anus distance = 16.8±3.0 (11.4-18) µm, anus-tail tip distance = 10.3±2.1 (6.9-14.2) µm, interphasmidial distance = 15.9 ± 3.7 (10.3-23.4) µm. The morphology of this nematode population is highly in agreement with the original description of M. enterolobii (Yang & Eisenback, 1983). This population was also identified using the D2-D3 of 28S rRNA and 18S rRNA (Powers et al., 2017; Subbotin et al., 2006) regions. The D2-D3 of 28S rRNA sequences from this study (accession numbers: OR889633) exhibited 99.5-99.8% similarity to the sequences of M. enterolobii from GenBank (accession numbers: OR214950 and ON496981). While the 18S rRNA sequences (accession numbers: OR896547) showed 99.2-99.3% similarity to the sequences of M. enterolobii from GenBank (accession numbers: MZ955995, MZ531901, and MW488150). To carry out Koch's postulates, 2000 J2s from collected M. enterolobii egg masses (initial population) were inoculated on two-month-old plantlets of mulberry (n = 6), planted on 2L pots within a screenhouse, non-inoculated plantlets (n=6) served as negative controls. After 90 days post-inoculation, nematode reproduction factors (RF = final density (nematodes were extracted from the whole root system and corresponding soil samples (Subbotin et al., 2021)) / initial population) and root damage symptoms were evaluated. The inoculated plantlets exhibited consistent yellowing leaves, stunting, and root galling symptoms (Fig. S1), mirroring observations from the field, with an average RF of 11.5. Control plants displayed no symptoms. Root-knot nematodes extracted from the roots were identified as M. enterolobii through molecular analyses of D2-D3 of 28S and 18S rRNA regions (GenBank accession numbers: OR889634 (D2-D3 of 28S) and OR896548 (18S)), thereby confirming that mulberry acts as a host for M. enterolobii. Currently, this nematode has been reported to be associated with two different host plants, including guava (Trinh et al., 2022) and pomelo (Le et al., 2023). Our discovery marks the first documented case of Meloidogyne enterolobii parasitizing mulberry in Vietnam. While the impact on mulberry productivity remains to be really important for sericulture food supply, pharmaceuticals, and beverage industries; the aggressive nature of M. enterolobii , as observed in the field and confirmed by the screenhouse tests, raises concerns about potential economic losses in mulberry production. Therefore, further investigations are needed to assess the extent of M. enterolobii infestation in mulberry orchards and to develop effective control measures to safeguard the sustainability of mulberry cultivation in Vietnam.

The escalating global industrial expansion has led to the extensive release of organic compounds into water bodies, resulting in substantial pollution and posing severe threats to both human health and the ecosystem. Among common micropollutants, bisphenol A (MP-BA) has emerged as a significant endocrine-disrupting chemical with potential adverse effects on human health and the environment. This study aims to develop an efficient photocatalyst, specifically by incorporating palladium-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Pd@GCN), to eliminate MP-BA pollutants present in industrial wastewater. The examination of optical properties and photoluminescence indicates that incorporating Pd into GCN enhances the visible light absorption spectra, which extends beyond 570 nm, and accelerates the separation rate of electron-hole pairs. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of MP-BA increases from 81.7 to 98.8% as the solution pH rises from 5.0 to 9.0. Moreover, Pd@GCN significantly improves the removal rate of MP-BA in wastewater samples, reaching an impressive 92.8% after 60 min of exposure to solar light. Furthermore, the Pd@GCN photocatalyst exhibits notable reusability over six cycles of MP-BA degradation, indicating its promising potential for the treatment of organic pollutants in wastewater under solar light conditions., (© 2024. Background: The purpose of this study was to (1) compare post-treatment outcomes of operative and nonoperative management of acute appendicitis in multi-morbid patients and (2) evaluate the generalizability of prior clinical trials by determining whether outcomes differ in multi-morbid patients compared to the young and healthy patients who resemble prior clinical trial participants., Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the National Inpatient Sample from 2004 to 2017. We included 368,537 patients with acute, uncomplicated appendicitis who were classified as having 0 or 2+ comorbidities. We compared inpatient morbidity, mortality, length of stay, and costs using propensity scores. Unmeasured confounding was addressed with probabilistic sensitivity analysis., Results: Overall, 5% of patients without comorbidities were treated nonoperatively versus 20% of multi-morbid patients. Compared to surgery, nonoperative management was associated with a 3.5% decrease in complications (95% confidence interval 3%-4%) for multi-morbid patients, but there was no significant difference for patients without comorbidity. However, nonoperative management was associated with a 1.5% increase in mortality for multimorbid patients (95% confidence interval 1.3%-1.7%). Costs and length of stay were lower for all patients treated with surgery. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis showed that results were robust to the effects of unmeasured confounding., Conclusion: Our results raise concerns about the generalizability of clinical trials that compared nonoperative and operative management of appendicitis because (1) those trials enrolled mostly young and healthy patients, and (2) results in multi-morbid patients differ from outcomes in younger and healthier patients., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Background and Objective: Gallic acid (GA) possesses various beneficial functions including antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory as well as inhibiting osteoclastogeneis. However, effects on osteogenic differentiation, especially in human ligament periodontal (hPDL) cells, remain unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the function of GA on osteogenesis and anti-inflammation in hPDL cells and to explore the involved underlying mechanism., Methods: Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (Pg-LPS) treatment was used as a model for periodontitis. ROS production was determined by H2DCFDA staining. Trans-well and wound healing assays were performed for checking the migration effect of GA. Alizarin red and alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) assays were performed to evaluate osteogenic differentiation. Osteogenesis and inflammatory-related genes and proteins were measured by real-time PCR and western blot., Results: Our results showed that GA-treated hPDL cells had higher proliferation and migration effect. GA inhibited ROS production-induced by Pg-LPS. Besides, GA abolished Pg-LPS-induced inflammation cytokines (il-6, il-1β) and inflammasome targets (Caspase-1, NLRP3). In addition, GA promoted ALP activity and mineralization in hPDL cells, lead to enhance osteoblast differentiation process. The effect of GA is related to G-protein-coupled receptor 35 (GPR35)/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway., Conclusion: GA attenuated Pg-LPS-induced inflammatory responses and periodontitis in hPDL cells. Background: Cardiopulmonary collapse is a catastrophic event in cesarean section, which leads to adverse outcomes for both the mother and the fetus. Pulmonary embolism is one of the rare etiologies of this entity. We herein reported the successful management of acute embolism pulmonary associated with cesarean delivery on a healthy pregnant woman at our tertiary referral hospital., Case Presentation: A full-term pregnant woman hospitalized for planned cesarean delivery due to placenta previa without cardiorespiratory diseases. She was scheduled uneventfully for a planned cesarean section. After placental delivery, the patient spontaneously fell into cardiopulmonary collapse and her vital signs deteriorated rapidly. The obstetricians promptly completed the cesarean section and performed all procedures to prevent the PPH and preserve the uterus. At the same time, the anesthesiologists continued to carry out advanced heart-lung resuscitation in order to control her vital signs. After surgery, the multidisciplinary team assessed the patient and found a thrombus in her pulmonary circulation. Therefore, the patient was managed with therapeutic anticoagulation. The patient recovered in good clinical condition and was discharged after 2 weeks without any complications., Conclusions: The diagnosis of acute pulmonary embolism is extremely difficult due to uncommon occurrence, sudden onset, and non-specific presentation. Awareness of this life-threatening pathology during cesarean delivery should be raised. Interdisciplinary assessment must be essentially established in this life-threatening condition. Background: Trichobakin (TBK), a member of type I ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs), was first successfully cloned from Trichosanthes sp Bac Kan 8-98 in Vietnam. Previous study has shown that TBK acts as a potential protein synthesis inhibitor; however, the inhibition efficiency and specificity of TBK on cancer cells remain to be fully elucidated., Methods and Results: In this work, we employed TBK and TBK conjugated with a part of the amino-terminal fragment (ATF) of the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), which contains the Ω-loop that primarily interacts with urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor, and can be a powerful carrier in the drug delivery to cancer cells. Four different human tumor cell lines and BALB/c mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma cells (LLC) were used to evaluate the role of TBK and ATF-TBK in the inhibition of tumor growth. Here we showed that the obtained ligand fused RIP (ATF-TBK) reduced the growth of four human cancer cell lines in vitro in the uPA receptor level-dependent manner, including the breast adenocarcinoma MDA-MB 231 cells and MCF7 cells, the prostate carcinoma LNCaP cells and the hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells. Furthermore, the conjugate showed anti-tumor activity and prolonged the survival time of tumor-bearing mice. The ATF-TBK also did not cause the death of mice with doses up to 48 mg/kg, and they were not significantly distinct on parameters of hematology and serum biochemistry between the control and experiment groups., Conclusions: In conclusion, ATF-TBK reduced the growth of four different human tumor cell lines and inhibited lung tumor growth in a mouse model with little side effects. The quasi-static regime of friction between a rigid steel indenter and a soft elastomer with high adhesion is studied experimentally. An analysis of the formally calculated dependencies of a friction coefficient on an external load (normal force) shows that the friction coefficient monotonically decreases with an increase in the load, following a power law relationship. Over the entire range of contact loads, a friction mode is realized in which constant shear stresses are maintained in the tangential contact, which corresponds to the "adhesive" friction mode. In this mode, Amonton's law is inapplicable, and the friction coefficient loses its original meaning. Some classical works, which show the existence of a transition between "adhesive" and "normal" friction, were analyzed. It is shown that, in fact, there is no such transition. A computer simulation of the indentation process was carried out within the framework of the boundary element method, which confirmed the experimental results.

Background: Caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT) is a key enzyme that regulates melatonin synthesis and is involved in regulating the growth, development, and response to abiotic stress in plants. Tea plant is a popular beverage consumed worldwide, has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties, including its ability to reduce inflammation, improve digestion, and boost immune function. By analyzing genetic variation within the COMT family, while helping tea plants resist adversity, it is also possible to gain a deeper understanding of how different tea varieties produce and metabolize catechins, then be used to develop new tea cultivars with desired flavor profiles and health benefits., Results: In this study, a total of 25 CsCOMT genes were identified based on the high-quality tea (Camellia sinensis) plant genome database. Phylogenetic tree analysis of CsCOMTs with COMTs from other species showed that COMTs divided into four subfamilies (Class I, II, III, IV), and CsCOMTs was distributed in Class I, Class II, Class III. CsCOMTs not only undergoes large-scale gene recombination in pairs internally in tea plant, but also shares 2 and 7 collinear genes with Arabidopsis thaliana and poplar (Populus trichocarpa), respectively. The promoter region of CsCOMTs was found to be rich in cis-acting elements associated with plant growth and stress response. By analyzing the previously transcriptome data, it was found that some members of CsCOMT family exhibited significant tissue-specific expression and differential expression under different stress treatments. Subsequently, we selected six CsCOMTs to further validated their expression levels in different tissues organ using qRT-PCR. In addition, we silenced the CsCOMT19 through virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) method and found that CsCOMT19 positively regulates the synthesis of melatonin in tea plant., Conclusion: These results will contribute to the understanding the functions of CsCOMT gene family and provide valuable information for further research on the role of CsCOMT genes in regulating tea plant growth, development, and response to abiotic stress., (© 2024. Background: Most skin-related traits have been studied in Caucasian genetic backgrounds. A comprehensive study on skin-associated genetic effects on underrepresented populations such as Vietnam is needed to fill the gaps in the field., Objectives: We aimed to develop a computational pipeline to predict the effect of genetic factors on skin traits using public data (GWAS catalogs and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data from the 1000 Genomes Project-1KGP) and in-house Vietnamese data (WGS and genotyping by SNP array). Also, we compared the genetic predispositions of 25 skin-related traits of Vietnamese population to others to acquire population-specific insights regarding skin health., Methods: Vietnamese cohorts of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of 1008 healthy individuals for the reference and 96 genotyping samples (which do not have any skin cutaneous issues) by Infinium Asian Screening Array-24 v1.0 BeadChip were employed to predict skin-associated genetic variants of 25 skin-related and micronutrient requirement traits in population analysis and correlation analysis. Simultaneously, we compared the landscape of cutaneous issues of Vietnamese people with other populations by assessing their genetic profiles., Results: The skin-related genetic profile of Vietnamese cohorts was similar at most to East Asian cohorts (JPT: Fst = 0.036, CHB: Fst = 0.031, CHS: Fst = 0.027, CDX: Fst = 0.025) in the population study. In addition, we identified pairs of skin traits at high risk of frequent co-occurrence (such as skin aging and wrinkles (r = 0.45, p = 1.50e-5) or collagen degradation and moisturizing (r = 0.35, p = 1.1e-3))., Conclusion: This is the first investigation in Vietnam to explore genetic variants of facial skin. No effective screening tools for ovarian cancer (OC) exist, making it one of the deadliest cancers among women. Considering that little is known about the detailed progression and metastasis mechanism of OC at a molecular level, it is crucial to gain more insights into how metabolic and signaling alterations accompany its development. Herein, we present a comprehensive study using ultra-high-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) to investigate the spatial distribution and alterations of lipids in ovarian tissues collected from double knockout ( n = 4) and triple mutant mouse models ( n = 4) of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). Lipids belonging to a total of 15 different classes were annotated and their abundance changes were compared to those in healthy mouse reproductive tissue ( n = 4), mapping onto major lipid pathways involved in OC progression. From intermediate-stage OC to advanced HGSC, we provide direct visualization of lipid distributions and their biological links to inflammatory response, cellular stress, cell proliferation, and other processes. Transcatheter structural heart interventions are expanding into more complex spaces including mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, left atrial appendage occlusion, tricuspid transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, mitral/tricuspid valve-in-valve, and perivalvular leak closures. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), with concomitant fluoroscopy, has remained the gold standard for many of these interventions. Although three-dimensional intracardiac echocardiography has been used, applications were often limited to guidance for more "simple" procedures such as patent foramen ovale/atrial septal defect closure and/or intraprocedural adjunctive imaging guidance. Two new planthopper species of the tropiduchid genus Connelicita Wang & Bourgoin, 2015, C.bachmaensis Constant & Pham, sp. nov. , and C.phongdienensis Constant & Pham, sp. nov. are described from Bach Ma National Park and from the Centre for Conservation of Vietnam Natural Resources and Rescue of Animals and plants, Phong Dien District in Thua Thien-Hue Province, respectively. These new records greatly extend the distribution of the genus, which was known from southern China (Guangxi) and North Vietnam, to the south, reaching the mid area of Central Vietnam. New records are provided for C.haiphongensis Wang & Zhang, 2015, extending the distribution of the species from Cat Ba Island to a large zone in North Vietnam. Illustrations of habitus, details, and male genitalia are given as well as a distribution map and photographs of the habitat. An identification key to the species of Vietnam is provided. Nocardiosis in aquatic animals caused by Nocardia seriolae is a frequently occurring serious infection that has recently spread to many countries. In this study, DNA vaccines containing potential bacterial antigens predicted using the reverse vaccinology approach were developed and evaluated in orange-spotted groupers. In silico analysis indicated that proteins including cholesterol oxidase, ld-transpeptidase, and glycosyl hydroxylase have high immunogenicity and are potential vaccine candidates. In vitro assays revealed the mature and biological configurations of these proteins. Importantly, when compared to a control PBS injection, N. seriolae DNA-based vaccines showed significantly higher expression of IL1β, IL17, and IFNγ at 1 or 2 days, in line with higher serum antibody production and expression of other cellular immune-related genes, such as MHCI, CD4, and CD8, at 7 days post-immunization. Remarkably, enhanced immune responses and strong protective efficacy against a highly virulent strain of N. seriolae were recorded in DNA vaccine-cholesterol oxidase (pcD::Cho) injected fish, with a relative survival rate of 73.3%. Our results demonstrate that the reverse vaccinology approach is a valid strategy for screening vaccine candidates and pcD::Cho is a promising candidate that can boost both innate and adaptive immune responses and confer considerable protection against N. seriolae infection., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
