Background/objectives: It is unclear whether palatal canine impaction is related to genetic or local/environmental factors. If a genetic origin is assumed, then it could be expected that palatal canine impaction is associated with overall craniofacial development. Within this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the craniofacial morphology of individuals with palatal canine impaction and compare it to a matched group of normal controls., Materials/methods: The sample for this investigation comprised 404 individuals (232 females and 172 males). Half of these individuals presented with unilateral or bilateral palatal canine impaction confirmed clinically and radiographically. The other half were matched for sex and age with the first half and comprised individuals without tooth impaction, apart from third molars. The shape of the craniofacial structures was outlined on calibrated cephalometric images through 15 curves and 127 landmarks (11 fixed and 116 semi-landmarks). Shape configurations were superimposed using Procrustes Superimposition and the resulting shape coordinates were reduced into principal components for all subsequent analyses. The effect of palatal canine impaction on craniofacial shape was assessed with regression models, separately in females and males. All statistical tests were performed assuming a type-1 error of 5%., Results: Individuals with palatally impacted canines appear to have a less convex face, a more brachyfacial skeletal pattern, and a sagittally extended premaxilla. In females effect sizes ranged between η2 = 0.136-0.397 (P < 0.05) and in males between η2 = 0.125-0.396 (P < 0.05, apart from the entire craniofacial configuration: P = 0.259)., Limitations: Palatal canine impaction was not confirmed through cone beam computer tomography images in all patients, however, in those cases, the treatment history confirmed the diagnosis., Conclusions/implications: Palatal canine impaction is related to a distinct craniofacial shape in females and males. These findings allow for speculation that palatal canine impaction is affected by genetic pathways involved in overall craniofacial development., (© The Author(s) 2024. Purpose: We propose a tumor tracking framework for 2D cine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on a pair of deep learning (DL) models relying on patient-specific (PS) training., Methods and Materials: The chosen DL models are: (1) an image registration transformer and (2) an auto-segmentation convolutional neural network (CNN). We collected over 1,400,000 cine MRI frames from 219 patients treated on a 0.35 T MRI-linac plus 7500 frames from additional 35 patients that were manually labeled and subdivided into fine-tuning, validation, and testing sets. The transformer was first trained on the unlabeled data (without segmentations). We then continued training (with segmentations) either on the fine-tuning set or for PS models based on 8 randomly selected frames from the first 5 seconds of each patient's cine MRI. The PS auto-segmentation CNN was trained from scratch with the same 8 frames for each patient, without pre-training. Furthermore, we implemented B-spline image registration as a conventional model, as well as different baselines. Output segmentations of all models were compared on the testing set using the Dice similarity coefficient, the 50% and 95% Hausdorff distance (HD 50% /HD 95% ), and the root-mean-square-error of the target centroid in superior-inferior direction., Results: The PS transformer and CNN significantly outperformed all other models, achieving a median (interquartile range) dice similarity coefficient of 0.92 (0.03)/0.90 (0.04), HD 50% of 1.0 (0.1)/1.0 (0.4) mm, HD 95% of 3.1 (1.9)/3.8 (2.0) mm, and root-mean-square-error of the target centroid in superior-inferior direction of 0.7 (0.4)/0.9 (1.0) mm on the testing set. Their inference time was about 36/8 ms per frame and PS fine-tuning required 3 min for labeling and 8/4 min for training. The transformer was better than the CNN in 9/12 patients, the CNN better in 1/12 patients, and the 2 PS models achieved the same performance on the remaining 2/12 testing patients., Conclusions: For targets in the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis, we found 2 PS DL models to provide accurate real-time target localization during MRI-guided radiotherapy., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Tooth eruption is an essential process for the development of the oral and maxillofacial system. Several inherited and acquired diseases might affect this tightly regulated process, resulting in premature, delayed, or even failed tooth eruption. The purpose of this article is to review the literature and the clinical parameters of metabolic bone diseases that affect tooth eruption. It examines the physiological aspects of tooth eruption and the pathophysiological changes induced by metabolic bone diseases, including changes in bone metabolism, density, and structure. The search strategy for this review included an electronic search in PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library using the following keywords: "metabolic bone diseases", "tooth eruption", "delayed tooth eruption", and each reported disease in combination with "tooth eruption disorders", covering publications up to March 2024 and limited to English-language sources. Understanding the influence of metabolic bone diseases on tooth eruption is crucial for managing both dental and skeletal manifestations associated with these disorders. This review suggests that a multidisciplinary approach to treatment may significantly improve oral outcomes for patients suffering from such conditions. Clinicians should be aware of the specific dental abnormalities that may arise and consider comprehensive evaluations and individualized treatment plans. These findings underscore the need for further research into targeted therapies that address these abnormalities.
