Extrusion-based 3D printing is a facile technology to construct complex structures of hydrogels, especially for tough hydrogels that have shown demonstrated potential in load-bearing materials and tissue engineering. However, 3D-printed hydrogels often possess mechanical properties that do not guarantee their usage in tissue-mimicking, load-bearing components, and motion sensors. This study proposes a novel strategy to construct high-strength and anisotropic Fe 3+ cross-linked poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate double network hydrogels. The semi-flexible sodium alginate chains act as a "conformation regulator" to promote the formation of strong intermolecular interactions between polymer chains and lock the more extended conformation exerted by the pre-stretch, enabling the construction of 3D-printed hydrogel structures with high orientation. The equilibrated anisotropic hydrogel filaments with a water content of 50-60 wt.% exhibit outstanding mechanical properties (tensile strength: 9-44 MPa; elongation at break: 120-668%; Young's modulus: 7-62 MPa; toughness: 26-52 MJ m - 3 ). 3D-printed anisotropic hydrogel structures with high mechanical performance show demonstrated potential as loading-bearing structures and electrodes of flexible triboelectric nanogenerators for versatile human motion sensing., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Aloe-emodin (AE) is a natural compound with photodynamic properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of AE-mediated photodynamic inactivation (PDI) on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The bacteriostatic efficiency under different photodynamic conditions and photosensitizing mechanism was studied in detail. The results showed that AE-mediated PDI exhibited a typical concentration and time-dependent characteristics. In terms of bactericidal mechanism, disruption of membrane integrity and increase of cell membrane permeability was observed. Type II reaction was assumed as the main photochemical reaction involved in AE-mediated PDI as evidenced by the action of different ROS quenching agents. Furthermore, AE-mediated PDI decreased the bacterial survival in freshly squeezed apple juice and maintained its quality. As a prerequisite for ensuring the safety and stability of people's daily lives, security monitoring has become increasingly important in the current rapid development of the economy. Intelligent sensing technology with lower power consumption will promote the upgradation of electronic devices and expand new application requirements. In this review, the recent progress in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as self-powered intelligent sensors for monitoring different kinds of biometric characteristics is summarized, including sliding behavior, handwriting behavior, keystroke dynamics, gait characteristics, and voice characteristics. Additionally, the applications of self-powered systems based on TENGs in individual electronics authentication and home security are comprehensively summarized. Finally, the remaining challenges and open opportunities are also discussed.

Stretchable electronics are of great significance for the development of the next-generation smart interactive systems. Here, we propose an intrinsically stretchable organic tribotronic transistor (SOTT) without a top gate electrode, which is composed of a stretchable substrate, silver nanowire electrodes, semiconductor blends, and a nonpolar elastomer dielectric. The drain-source current of the SOTT can be modulated by external contact electrification with the dielectric layer. Under 0-50% stretching both parallel and perpendicular to the channel directions, the SOTT retains great output performance. After being stretched to 50% for thousands of cycles, the SOTT can survive with excellent stability. Moreover, the SOTT can be conformably attached to the human hand, which can be used for tactile signal perception in human-machine interaction and for controlling smart home devices and robots. The development of stretchable electronics requires the invention of compatible high-performance power sources, such as stretchable supercapacitors and batteries. In this work, two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene is being explored for flexible and printed energy storage devices by fabrication of a robust, stretchable high-performance supercapacitor with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to create a composite electrode. The Ti 3 C 2 T x /RGO composite electrode combines the superior electrochemical and mechanical properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x and the mechanical robustness of RGO resulting from strong nanosheet interactions, larger nanoflake size, and mechanical flexibility. It is found that the Ti 3 C 2 T x /RGO composite electrodes with 50 wt % RGO incorporated prove to mitigate cracks generated under large strains. The composite electrodes exhibit a large capacitance of 49 mF/cm 2 (∼490 F/cm 3 and ∼140 F/g) and good electrochemical and mechanical stability when subjected to cyclic uniaxial (300%) or biaxial (200% × 200%) strains. The as-assembled symmetric supercapacitor demonstrates a specific capacitance of 18.6 mF/cm 2 (∼90 F/cm 3 and ∼29 F/g) and a stretchability of up to 300%. The developed approach offers an alternative strategy to fabricate stretchable MXene-based energy storage devices and can be extended to other members of the large MXene family.

Owing to the perfect combination of metallic conductivity, liquid fluidity, and mechanical stability, liquid metals (LMs) are considered the potential materials of the electromechanical system and the basic components of liquid robot. Here, triboelectric effect-driven liquid metal actuators (TLMAs) have been demonstrated, in which the motions of LMs could be driven and accurately controlled by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). By the coulomb forces of transferred triboelectric charges in interdigital electrodes and inertia effects, the LM could be driven for continuous linear and circular motions, respectively. As an alternative structure, the motion of LMs could also be accurately controlled, in which the reciprocating and merging of LMs have been demonstrated. Moreover, the TLMA could serve as a control switch to modulate on/off of an LED by integrating into a circuit, and a transport system based on TLMA has also been demonstrated. In this work, the TENG is used as a medium to first drive and accurately control LMs by external mechanical force, which may have great applications in Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS), liquid robot, and intelligent microcontroller.

A high-speed micromotor is usually actuated by a power source with high voltage and frequency. Here we report a triboelectric micromotor by coupling a micromotor and a triboelectric nanogenerator, in which the micromotor can be actuated by ultralow-frequency mechanical stimuli. The performances of the triboelectric micromotor are exhibited at various structural parameters of the micromotor, as well as at different mechanical stimuli of the triboelectric nanogenerator. With a sliding range of 50 mm at 0.1 Hz, the micromotor can start to rotate and reach over 1000 r min -1 at 0.8 Hz. The maximum operation efficiency of the triboelectric micromotor can reach 41%. Additionally, the micromotor is demonstrated in two scanning systems for information recognition. This work has realized a high-speed micromotor actuated by ultralow frequency mechanical stimuli without an external power supply, which has extended the application of triboelectric nanogenerator in micro/nano electromechanical systems, intelligent robots and autonomous driving.

Electric double layers (EDLs) formed in electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (FETs) induce an extremely large local electric field that gives a highly efficient charge carrier control in the semiconductor channel. To achieve highly efficient triboelectric potential gating on the FET and explore diversified applications of electric double layer FETs (EDL-FETs), a triboiontronic transistor is proposed to bridge triboelectric potential modulation and ion-controlled semiconductor devices. Utilizing the triboelectric potential instead of applying an external gate voltage, the triboiontronic MoS 2 transistor is efficiently operated owing to the formation of EDLs in the ion-gel dielectric layer. The operation mechanism of the triboiontronic transistor is proposed, and high current on/off ratio over 10 7 , low threshold value (75 μm), and steep switching properties (20 µm dec -1 ) are achieved. A triboiontronic logic inverter with desirable gain (8.3 V mm -1 ), low power consumption, and high stability is also demonstrated. This work presents a low-power-consuming, active, and a general approach to efficiently modulate semiconductor devices through mechanical instructions, which has great potential in human-machine interaction, electronic skin, and intelligent wearable devices. Tribotronics, a new field that involves the coupling of triboelectricity and semiconductors, has attracted great interest in the nanoenergy and nanoelectronics domains. This paper proposes a tribotronic bipolar junction transistor (TBJT) that incorporates a bipolar junction transistor and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) in the single-electrode mode. When the mobile triboelectric layer slides on the device surface for electrification, a bias voltage is created and applied to the emitter junction, and then the base current from the TENG is amplified. Based on the fabricated TBJT, a mechanical frequency monitoring sensor with high sensitivity and excellent stability and a finger-triggered touch switch were developed. This work demonstrated for the first time a tribotronic device with simultaneously controlled voltage and current voltage/current simultaneously controlled tribotronic device, which has promising potential applications in micro/nano-sensors, human-machine interactions, intelligent instrumentation, wearable electronics, and other applications., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.

Piezoelectric organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have recently attracted much attention in the field of optoelectronic devices. However, their piezoelectric properties as a possible way to modulate device performances have rarely been reported. Here, we study experimentally a photodetector based on CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (MAPbI 3 ) single crystals, whose performance is effectively modulated via an emerging effect-the piezo-phototronic effect, which is to use the piezoelectric polarization charges to tune the optoelectronic processes at the interface. A piezoelectric coefficient of 10.81 pm/V of the CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystal is obtained. Under 680 nm laser illumination with a power density of 3.641 mW/cm 2 and at an external bias of 2 V, compared to the case without straining, the light current of the photodetector is enhanced by ∼120% when a 43.48 kPa compressive pressure is applied. The response speed of the photocurrent is 3 and 2 times faster than the cases without applying pressure for the light-on and light-off states, respectively. This work proves that the performance of the photodetector based on MAPbI 3 single crystals can be effectively enhanced by the piezo-phototronic effect, providing a good method for optimizing the performance of future perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Because silicon transistors are rapidly approaching their scaling limit due to short-channel effects, alternative technologies are urgently needed for next-generation electronics. Here, we demonstrate ultrathin ZnO piezotronic transistors with a ∼2 nm channel length using inner-crystal self-generated out-of-plane piezopotential as the gate voltage to control the carrier transport. This design removes the need for external gate electrodes that are challenging at nanometer scale. These ultrathin devices exhibit a strong piezotronic effect and excellent pressure-switching characteristics. By directly converting mechanical drives into electrical control signals, ultrathin piezotronic devices could be used as active nanodevices to construct the next generation of electromechanical devices for human-machine interfacing, energy harvesting, and self-powered nanosystems.

Smart skin is expected to be stretchable and tactile for bionic robots as the medium with the ambient environment. Here, a stretchable triboelectric-photonic smart skin (STPS) is reported that enables multidimensional tactile and gesture sensing for a robotic hand. With a grating-structured metal film as the bioinspired skin stripe, the STPS exhibits a tunable aggregation-induced emission in a lateral tensile range of 0-160%. Moreover, the STPS can be used as a triboelectric nanogenerator for vertical pressure sensing with a maximum sensitivity of 34 mV Pa -1 . The pressure sensing characteristics can remain stable in different stretching conditions, which demonstrates a synchronous and independent sensing property for external stimuli with great durability. By integrating on a robotic hand as a conformal covering, the STPS shows multidimensional mechanical sensing abilities for external touch and different gestures with joints bending. The physical filtration mechanism of a traditional face mask has a low removal efficiency of ultrafine particulates in the size range of 10-1000 nm, which are badly harmful to human health. Herein, a novel self-powered electrostatic adsorption face mask (SEA-FM) based on the poly(vinylidene fluoride) electrospun nanofiber film (PVDF-ESNF) and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) driven by respiration (R-TENG) is developed. The ultrafine particulates are electrostatically adsorbed by the PVDF-ESNF, and the R-TENG can continually provide electrostatic charges in this adsorption process by respiration. On the basis of the R-TENG, the SEA-FM shows that the removal efficiency of coarse and fine particulates is higher than 99.2 wt % and the removal efficiency of ultrafine particulates is still as high as 86.9 wt % after continually wearing for 240 min and a 30-day interval. This work has proposed as a new method of wearable air filtration and may have great prospects in human health, self-powered electronics, and wearable devices.

Alginate, as a natural linear polysaccharide derived from brown sea algae, has the advantage of low toxicity, good biocompatibility, and biodegradability, which has aroused wide interests in recent years. In this study, a degradable triboelectric generator based on an alginate film is presented. The calcium alginate film, which is prepared by a simple freeze-drying method and a crosslinking reaction, has a form of porous structures that are beneficial for triboelectric power generation. The fabricated TENG has a stable output performance with a maximum voltage, current, and power of 33 V, 150 nA, and 9.5 μW, respectively. The performances of the TENG were investigated at different thicknesses of the calcium alginate film and various concentrations of the sodium alginate solution, as well as the degradability of the film with different thicknesses and temperatures. In addition, the TENG was designed for harvesting water wave energy in a low-frequency range from 1 to 4 Hz. Storing energy harvested by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) from ambient mechanical motion is still a great challenge for achieving low-cost and environmental benign power sources. Here, an all-solid-state Na-ion battery with safe and durable performance used for efficient storing pulsed energy harvested by the TENG is demonstrated. The solid-state sodium-ion batteries are charged by galvanostatic mode and pulse mode with the TENG, respectively. The all-solid-state sodium-ion battery displays excellent cyclic performance up to 1000 cycles with a capacity retention of about 85% even at a high charge and discharge current density of 48 mA g -1 . When charged by the TENG, an energy conversion efficiency of 62.3% is demonstrated. The integration of TENGs with the safe and durable all-solid-state sodium-ion batteries is potential for providing more stable power output for self-powered systems.

Realizing active interaction with external environment/stimuli is a great challenge for current electronics. In this paper, a tribotronic tuning diode (TTD) is proposed by coupling a variable capacitance diode and a triboelectric nanogenerator in free-standing sliding mode. When the friction layer is sliding on the device surface for electrification, a reverse bias voltage is created and applied to the diode for tuning the junction capacitance. When the sliding distance increases from 0 to 25 mm, the capacitance of the TTD decreases from about 39 to 8 pF. The proposed TTD has been integrated into analog circuits and exhibited excellent performances in frequency modulation, phase shift, and filtering by sliding a finger. This work has demonstrated tunable diode and active analog signal modulation by tribotronics, which has great potential to replace ordinary variable capacitance diodes in various practical applications such as signal processing, electronic tuning circuits, precise tuning circuits, active sensor networks, electronic communications, remote controls, flexible electronics, etc.

Large-scale tactile sensor arrays are of great importance in flexible electronics, human-robot interaction, and medical monitoring. In this paper, a flexible 10 × 10 tribotronic transistor array (TTA) is developed as an active tactile sensing system by incorporating field-effect transistor units and triboelectric nanogenerators into a polyimide substrate. The drain-source current of each tribotronic transistor can be individually modulated by the corresponding external contact, which has induced a local electrostatic potential to act as the conventional gate voltage. By scaling down the pixel size from 5 × 5 to 0.5 × 0.5 mm 2 , the sensitivities of single pixels are systematically investigated. The pixels of the TTA show excellent durability, independence, and synchronicity, which are suitable for applications in real-time tactile sensing, motion monitoring, and spatial mapping. The integrated tribotronics provides an unconventional route to realize an active tactile sensing system, with prospective applications in wearable electronics, human-machine interfaces, fingerprint identification, and so on.

Portable and wearable personal electronics and smart security systems are accelerating the development of transparent, flexible, and thin-film electronic devices. Here, we report a transparent and flexible self-charging power film (SCPF) that functions either as a power generator integrated with an energy storage unit or as a self-powered information input matrix. The SCPF possesses the capability of harvesting mechanical energy from finger motions, based on the coupling between the contact electrification and electrostatic induction effects, and meanwhile storing the generated energy. Under the fast finger sliding, the film can be charged from 0 to 2.5 V within 2094 s and discharge at 1 μA for approximately 1630 s. Furthermore, the film is able to identify personal characteristics during a sliding motion by recording the electric signals related to the person's individual bioelectricity, applied pressing force, sliding speed, and so on, which shows its potential applications in security systems in touchpad technology.

A plasma-induced p-type MoS2 flake and n-type ZnO film diode, which exhibits an excellent rectification ratio, is demonstrated. Under 365 nm optical irradiation, this p-n diode shows a strong photoresponse with an external quantum efficiency of 52.7% and a response time of 66 ms. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has attracted a great attention as an excellent 2D material for future optoelectronic devices. Here, a novel MoS 2 tribotronic phototransistor is developed by a conjunction of a MoS 2 phototransistor and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) in sliding mode. When an external friction layer produces a relative sliding on the device, the induced positive charges on the back gate of the MoS 2 phototransistor act as a "gate" to increase the channel conductivity as the traditional back gate voltage does. With the sliding distance increases, the photoresponsivity of the device is drastically enhanced from 221.0 to 727.8 A W -1 at the 100 mW cm -2 UV excitation intensity and 1 V bias voltage. This work has extended the emerging tribotronics to the field of photodetection based on 2D material, and demonstrated a new way to realize the adjustable photoelectric devices with high photoresponsivity via human interfacing.

The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising mechanical energy harvesting technology, but its pulsed output and the instability of input energy sources make associated energy-storage devices necessary for real applications. In this work, feasible and efficient charging of Li-ion batteries by a rotating TENG with pulsed output current is demonstrated. In-depth discussions are made on how to maximize the power-storage efficiency by achieving an impedance match between the TENG and a battery with appropriate design of transformers. With a transformer coil ratio of 36.7, ≈72.4% of the power generated by the TENG at 250 rpm can be stored in an LiFePO 4 -Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 battery. Moreover, a 1 h charging of an LiCoO 2 -C battery by the TENG at 600 rpm delivers a discharge capacity of 130 mAh, capable of powering many smart electronics. Considering the readily scale-up capability of the TENG, promising applications in personal electronics can be anticipated in the near future.

Based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), the first active micro-actuator for optical modulation driven by mechanical energy without external power or mechanical joint is presented.
