Immunotherapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) exhibits notable variability in efficacy. Concurrently, recent research emphasizes circRNAs' impact on the ESCC tumor microenvironment. To further explore the relationship, we leveraged circRNA, microRNA, and mRNA sequence datasets to construct a comprehensive immune-related circRNA-microRNA-mRNA network, revealing competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) roles in ESCC. The network comprises 16 circular RNAs, 13 microRNAs, and 1,560 mRNAs. Weighted gene co-expression analysis identified immune-related modules, notably cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) and myeloid-derived suppressor cell modules, correlating significantly with immune and stemness scores. Among them, the CAF module plays a crucial role in extracellular matrix function and effectively discriminates ESCC patients. Four hub collagen family genes within CAF correlated robustly with CAF, macrophage infiltration, and T-cell exclusion. In-house sequencing and RT-qPCR validated their elevated expression. We also identified CAF module-targeting drugs as potential ESCC treatments. In summary, we established an immune-related circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network that not only illuminates ceRNA functionality but also highlights circRNAs' involvement in the CAF through collagen gene targeting. These findings hold promise to predict ESCC immune landscapes and therapy responses, ultimately aiding in more personalized and effective clinical decision-making.

The metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR, GRM) family is involved in multiple signaling pathways and regulates neurotransmitter release. However, the evolutionary history, distribution, and function of the mGluRs family in lampreys have not been determined. Therefore, we identified the mGluRs gene family in the genome of Lethenteron reissneri, which has been conserved throughout vertebrate evolution. We confirmed that Lr-GRM3, Lr-GRM5, and Lr-GRM7 encode three types of mGluRs in lamprey. Additionally, we investigated the distribution of Lr-GRM3 within this species by qPCR and Western blotting. Furthermore, we conducted RNA sequencing to investigate the molecular function of Lr-GRM3 in lamprey. Our gene expression profile revealed that, similar to that in jawed vertebrates, Lr-GRM3 participates in multiple signal transduction pathways and influences synaptic excitability in lampreys. Moreover, it also affects intestinal motility and the inflammatory response in lampreys. This study not only enhances the understanding of mGluRs' gene evolution but also highlights the conservation of GRM3's role in signal transduction while expanding our knowledge of its functions specifically within lampreys. Recently, visible-light-driven photocatalysis attracts much concerns in the remediation of environmental organic pollutants. In this study, the cerium doped biochar was fabricated through the hydrothermal method, and served as an efficient photocatalyst towards rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation. Almost 100% of rhodamine B was removed by 2.0 g·L -1 cerium doped biochar after 60 min of visible light irradiation at pH 3, but only about 25.50% and 29.60% of rhodamine B was removed by cerium dioxide and biochar under identical conditions. The degradation process coincided well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the photodegradation rate constant of cerium doped biochar was 0.0485·min -1 , which was respectively 97 and 44 times that of biochar (0.0005·min -1 ) and cerium dioxide (0.0011·min -1 ). According to the trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy analysis, h + , O 2 - ∙ and ∙OH all participated in the degradation of rhodamine B in the cerium doped biochar photocatalytic systems, and the function of h + and ∙OH was dominated. Consequently, the biochar could not only be an excellent carrier for supporting cerium dioxide, but also greatly improved its photocatalytic activity. The band gap of cerium doped biochar was narrower than cerium dioxide, which could improve the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs under visible-light excitation, thus ultimately enhanced the degradation of rhodamine B. At present, there is a research gap concerning the specific functions and mechanisms of the Notch gene family and its signaling pathway in jawless vertebrates. In this study, we identified a Notch1 homologue ( Lr. Notch1) in the Lethenteron reissneri database. Through bioinformatics analysis, we identified Lr. Notch1 as the likely common ancestor gene of the Notch gene family in higher vertebrates, indicating a high degree of conservation in the Notch gene family and its signaling pathways. To validate the biological function of Lr. Notch1, we conducted targeted silencing of Lr . Notch1 in L. reissneri and analyzed the resultant gene expression profile before and after silencing using transcriptome analysis. Our findings revealed that the silencing of Lr. Notch1 resulted in differential expression of pathways and genes associated with signal transduction, immune regulation, and metabolic regulation, mirroring the biological function of the Notch signaling pathway in higher vertebrates. This article systematically elucidated the origin and evolution of the Notch gene family while also validating the biological function of Lr. Notch1. These insights offer valuable clues for understanding the evolution of the Notch signaling pathway and establish a foundation for future research on the origin of the Notch signaling pathway, as well as its implications in human diseases and immunomodulation.

Purpose: Deep learning (DL) is widely used in dose prediction for radiation oncology, multiple DL techniques comparison is often lacking in the literature. To compare the performance of 4 state-of-the-art DL models in predicting the voxel-level dose distribution for cervical cancer volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). Methods and Materials: A total of 261 patients' plans for cervical cancer were retrieved in this retrospective study. A three-channel feature map, consisting of a planning target volume (PTV) mask, organs at risk (OARs) mask, and CT image was fed into the three-dimensional (3D) U-Net and its 3 variants models. The data set was randomly divided into 80% as training-validation and 20% as testing set, respectively. The model performance was evaluated on the 52 testing patients by comparing the generated dose distributions against the clinical approved ground truth (GT) using mean absolute error (MAE), dose map difference (GT-predicted), clinical dosimetric indices, and dice similarity coefficients (DSC). Results: The 3D U-Net and its 3 variants DL models exhibited promising performance with a maximum MAE within the PTV 0.83% ± 0.67% in the UNETR model. The maximum MAE among the OARs is the left femoral head, which reached 6.95% ± 6.55%. For the body, the maximum MAE was observed in UNETR, which is 1.19 ± 0.86%, and the minimum MAE was 0.94 ± 0.85% for 3D U-Net. The average error of the Dmean difference for different OARs is within 2.5 Gy. The average error of V40 difference for the bladder and rectum is about 5%. The mean DSC under different isodose volumes was above 90%. Conclusions: DL models can predict the voxel-level dose distribution accurately for cervical cancer VMAT treatment plans. All models demonstrated almost analogous performance for voxel-wise dose prediction maps. Considering all voxels within the body, 3D U-Net showed the best performance. Delirium is a severe acute neuropsychiatric syndrome that commonly occurs in the elderly and is considered an independent risk factor for later dementia. However, given its inherent complexity, few animal models of delirium have been established and the mechanism underlying the onset of delirium remains elusive. Here, we conducted a comparison of three mouse models of delirium induced by clinically relevant risk factors, including anesthesia with surgery (AS), systemic inflammation, and neurotransmission modulation. We found that both bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cholinergic receptor antagonist scopolamine (Scop) induction reduced neuronal activities in the delirium-related brain network, with the latter presenting a similar pattern of reduction as found in delirium patients. Consistently, Scop injection resulted in reversible cognitive impairment with hyperactive behavior. No loss of cholinergic neurons was found with treatment, but hippocampal synaptic functions were affected. These findings provide further clues regarding the mechanism underlying delirium onset and demonstrate the successful application of the Scop injection model in mimicking delirium-like phenotypes in mice.

Background: As a processing method of RNA precursors, alternative splicing (AS) is critical to normal cellular activities. Aberrant AS events are associated with cancer development and can be promising targets to treat cancer. However, no detailed and unbiased study describes the current state of AS of cancer research. We aim to measure and recognize the current state and trends of AS cancer research in this study., Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection was used to acquire the articles. Utilizing three bibliometric tools (CiteSpace, VOSviewer, R-bibliometrix), we were able to measure and recognize the influence and collaboration data of individual articles, journals, and co-citations. Analysis of co-occurrence and burst information helped us identify the trending research areas related to AS of cancer., Results: From 2012 to 2021, the total number of papers on AS of cancer published in 766 academic journals was 3,507, authored by 20,406 researchers in 405 institutions from 80 countries/regions. Research involving AS of cancer genes was primarily conducted in the United States and China; simultaneously, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, and National Cancer Institute were the institutions with strong research capabilities. Scorilas Andreas is the scholar with the most publications, while the most co-citations were generated by Wang, Eric T. Plos One published the most papers on AS of cancer, while J Biol Chem was the most co-cited academic journal in this field. The results of keyword co-occurrence analysis can be divided into three types: molecular (P53, CD44, androgen receptor, srsf3, esrp1), pathological process (apoptosis, EMT, metastasis, angiogenesis, proliferation), and disease (breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric cancer)., Conclusion: Research on AS of cancer has been increasing in intensity over the past decade. Current AS of cancer studies focused on the hallmarks of AS in cancer and AS signatures including diagnostic and therapeutic targets. Among them, the current trends are splicing factors regulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition and other hallmarks, aberrant splicing events in tumors, and further mechanisms. A novel Fenton-like catalyst made of reduced graphene oxide-coated CuFeO 2 (rGO-coated CuFeO 2 ) was synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction method to remove terramycin from aqueous solutions. The catalytic degradation performance of rGO-coated CuFeO 2 for terramycin was verified with H 2 O 2 activation. The characterization reveals that rGO-coated CuFeO 2 has a micro- and mesoporous structure, with groups such as C=C/C-C, CH 2 -CO, and HO-C=O found on the surface. The Fenton-like catalytic degradation of terramycin by rGO-coated CuFeO 2 was in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the elevated temperature accelerated the reaction. Terramycin was catalytically degraded by rGO-coated CuFeO 2 in two steps: terramycin was first adsorbed by rGO, and then Fenton-like degradation took place on its surface. This research presents new insight into the design and fabrication of Fenton-like catalysts with enhanced performance.

Background: For patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has become one of the options for clinical local treatment. Immune parameters, including platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and systemic immune inflammatory (SII), predict survival in various cancers. This study aimed to determine whether peripheral immune parameters can predict survival in patients with uHCC undergoing IMRT and establish a clinically useful prognostic nomogram for survival prediction., Methods: The clinical data of 309 HCC patients were retrospectively analyzed and randomly divided into training (n = 216) and validation (n = 93) cohorts. PLR, NLR and SII were collected before and after IMRT. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were performed to identify independent prognostic factors affecting survival, which were used to generate a nomogram., Results: The median survival was 16.3 months, and significant increases in PLR, NLR, and SII were observed after IMRT (P < 0.001). High levels of immune parameters were associated with poor prognosis (P < 0.001); enlarged spleen, Barcelona clinic liver cancer stage (B and C), post-SII, and delta-NLR were independent risk factors for survival and were included in the nomogram, which accurately predicted 3- and 5-year survival. The nomogram was well verified in the validation cohort., Conclusions: High levels of immune parameters are associated with poor prognosis in uHCC patients receiving IMRT. g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 /TiO 2 nanocomposite materials were loaded onto a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane using a phase inversion method to obtain a photocatalytic flat membrane for dye removal. The morphology, structure, and photocatalytic activity of the g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 /TiO 2 nanoparticles and composite membrane were evaluated. The g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 /TiO 2 /PVDF membrane exhibited superior morphology, hydrophilic properties, and antifouling performance compared with the raw PVDF membrane. Four-stage filtration was performed to evaluate the self-cleaning and antifouling capacity of the g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 /TiO 2 /PVDF membrane. Upon irradiating the composite membrane with visible light for 30 min, its irreversible fouling resistance (Rir) was low (9%), and its flux recovery rate (FRR) was high (71.0%) after five filtration cycles. The removal rate of rhodamine B (RhB) from the composite membrane under visible light irradiation reached 98.1% owing to the high photocatalytic activity of the membrane, which was superior to that of raw PVDF membrane (42.5%). A mechanism of photocatalytic composite membranes for RhB degradation was proposed. The flipped learning approach with the use of social media as an emerging technology has changed the quality of learning in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) educational contexts. This review probed the effect of the web-based flipped learning approach on learners' engagement and critical thinking. The earlier studies revealed the significance of social media in developing learner engagement and critical thinking. Studies indicated that the provision of opportunities for more cooperative and collaborative learning activities, and high-quality interaction through the use of social media can be influential in developing learners' engagement. Moreover, social media platforms can provide a context for feedback, and various types of challenging tasks that can improve EFL learners' critical thinking. To investigate the effect of pulmonary rehabilitation combined with diaphragm pacemaker therapy on the diaphragm function of severely ill patients on mechanical ventilation. Forty patients were randomly divided into the control group (CG; n = 20) and experimental group (EG; n = 20). The CG was given basic ICU nursing and conventional rehabilitation treatment. The EG added a diaphragm pacemaker and pulmonary rehabilitation therapies along with basic ICU nursing and conventional rehabilitation treatment. The relevant indexes were compared at baseline and postintervention, including the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), Acute Physiology, Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scores, diaphragm mobility and thickness. The indexes of mechanical ventilation time, ICU and total hospital stays were compared between the two groups. There was no difference in the GCS and APACHE II scores, and diaphragm mobility and thickness between the two groups before treatment (P > 0.05). After 30 days of treatment, the GCS scores increased in both groups, the APACHE II scores decreased significantly, and diaphragm mobility and thickness decreased compared with before treatment (P < 0.05), but the improvement of each index in the EG was more evident than in the CG. Compared with the CG, the indexes of the EG, including offline, ICU and total hospitalization times, were significantly shorter (P < 0.05). Additionally, there were no adverse events such as accidental tube detachment or falling out of bed during treatment. In order to improve the recognition effect of student weariness emotion in English classroom, this paper combines intelligent Internet of Things technology and big data technology to construct an improvement model of student weariness emotion in English classroom. In the process of student facial expression recognition, according to the given grayscale threshold, this paper extracts the surface contour information from the three-dimensional volume data, extracts the student's surface contour information, and uses triangular facets to fit to form a triangular mesh. Moreover, this paper renders a triangular mesh model and shows how to speed up the calculation of PFH. In addition, this paper proposes a Fast Point Feature Histogram, which uses an iterative closest point fine registration algorithm for image registration. Finally, this paper constructs an emotion recognition model of students' weariness in English classroom. Objective: This study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of levothyroxine sodium tablets combined with I 131 in the treatment of patients after thyroidectomy and the effect on thyroglobulin (Tg) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels., Methods: 80 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer who required thyroidectomy after surgery between July 2019 and January 2021 were recruited for prospective study, 40 patients in the control group received levothyroxine sodium tablets, and 40 patients in the experimental group received levothyroxine sodium treatment plus I 131 treatment. Treatment effect, serum Tg and TSH levels, and relapse were measured., Results: The removal rate of residual thyroid tissue in the experimental group (87.50%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (57.50%) ( P < 0.05). Levothyroxine sodium tablets plus I 131 was associated with a significantly higher efficacy versus levothyroxine sodium tablets ( P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the serum Tg levels between the two groups before treatment ( P > 0.05). After treatment, the serum Tg levels in both groups were significantly decreased, and levothyroxine sodium tablets plus I 131 resulted in a significantly lower Tg level versus levothyroxine sodium tablets ( P < 0.05). Before treatment, the two groups showed similar TSH levels ( P > 0.05). After treatment, patients receiving levothyroxine sodium tablets plus I 131 had a significantly greater increase in the TSH levels versus levothyroxine sodium tablets ( P < 0.05). The recurrence rate of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group ( P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Levothyroxine sodium tablets plus I 131 for post-operative patients with differentiated thyroid cancer enhance the removal rate of residual thyroid tissue, effectively reduce serum Tg level, and increase TSH level, with significant therapeutic effects, low recurrence rates, and a high safety profile., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2022 Ya-Ling Pang et al.)

Nonylphenol (NP) belongs to the metabolites of commercial detergents, which acts as an environmental endocrine disruptor. NP is reported to have multiple toxicity including reproductive toxicity. In present study, we reported the protective effects of melatonin on the NP-exposed oocyte quality. We set up a mouse in vivo model of NP exposure (500 μg/L), by daily drinking and continued feeding for 4 weeks; and we gave a daily dose of melatonin (30 mg/kg) to the NP-exposed mice. Melatonin supplementation restores the development ability of oocytes exposed to NP, and this was due to the reduction of ROS level and DNA damage by melatonin. Melatonin could rescue aberrant mitochondria distribution, mitochondria membrane potential, which also was reflected by ATP content and mtDNA copy number. Moreover, melatonin could restore the RPS3 expression to ensure the ribosome function for protein synthesis, and reduced GRP78 protein level to protect against ER stress and ER distribution defects. We also found that vesicle protein Rab11 from Golgi apparatus was protected by melatonin at the spindle periphery of oocytes of NP-exposed mice, which further moderated LAMP2 for lysosome function. Our results indicate that melatonin protects oocytes from NP exposure through its effects on the reduction of oxidative stress and DNA damage, which might be through its amelioration on the organelles in mice., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The combination of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus sorafenib prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) than sorafenib or TACE monotherapy for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study assessed the efficacy and safety of radiotherapy (RT) plus monoclonal antibody against programmed cell death 1 (anti-PD1) versus TACE plus sorafenib for patients with advanced HCC., Methods: Patients with advanced HCC who treated with RT plus anti-PD1 and TACE plus sorafenib were enrolled. Objective response rate (ORR), PFS, disease control rate (DCR) and OS were calculated to assess the antitumor response and the treatment-related adverse events to the safety., Results: Between January 2018 to March 2021, 37 patients underwent RT plus anti-PD1 and 41 patients underwent TACE plus sorafenib. The baseline characteristics between the two groups were comparable. The ORR and DCR were significantly higher in the RT + PD1 group than the TACE plus sorafenib group according to RECIST 1.1 (54.05% vs. 12.20%, P < 0.001; 70.27% vs. 46.37%, P = 0.041; respectively) and according to mRECIST (56.76% vs. 31.71%, P = 0.039; 70.27% vs. 46.37%, P = 0.041; respectively). RT plus anti-PD1 provided significantly better PFS (HR, 0.51; 95% CI 0.30-0.86; P = 0.017) than TACE plus sorafenib. Moreover, patients with RT plus anti-PD1 had significantly higher 3-, 6-, and 9-month OS rates than those with TACE plus sorafenib(97.3% vs. 92.30%, P < 0.001; 91.89% vs. 68.60%, P < 0.001; 75.5% vs. 60.60%, P < 0.001; respectively). The median OS was more favorable 17.4 months for the RT + PD1 group and 11.9 months for the TACE plus sorafenib group. No treatment-related death was observed. Grade 3 or more treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) occurred significantly less in patients in the RT + PD1 group than the TACE plus sorafenib group (29.7% vs. 75.6%, P < 0.001), and all TRAEs were manageable., Conclusions: In this real-world study, RT plus anti-PD1 showed significantly promising efficacy and manageable safety than TACE plus sorafenib in patients with advanced HCC. This study explored the effect and potential mechanism of Danlou Tablets(DLT) on insulin resistance in db/db mice with type 2 diabetic mellitus(T2 DM). The db/db male mice were randomly assigned into model control(MC) group, metformin(MET, tablet, 100 mg·kg~(-1)) group, and DLT(1 g·kg~(-1)) group, and C57 BL/6 J mice were taken as normal control(NC) group. The mice in the MET group and DLT group were given corresponding drugs by gavage once a day for 16 weeks. The fasting blood glucose, glucose tolerance, and insulin tolerance were measured to evaluate the effect of DLT on blood glucose and insulin resistance in diabetic mice. The serum free fatty acid, triacylglycerol, and total cholesterol levels were determined to evaluate the effect of DLT on blood lipids in diabetic mice. The liver index and perirenal fat index were calculated to measure the effect of DLT on lipid accumulation in non-adipose tissue and adipose tissue. Western blot was performed to determine the protein levels of insulin receptor-β(IRβ), phospho-IRβ(p-IRβ), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3 K), and insulin receptor substrate-1(IRS-1) involved in IRS-1/PI3 K/Akt signaling pathway in the livers of mice to reveal the mechanism of DLT in alleviating insulin resistance in diabetic mice. The protein levels of sterol regulatory element binding protein-1(SREBP-1) and the mRNA levels of sterol regulatory element binding protein-1 c(SREBP-1 c), fatty acid synthase(FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase(ACC), diacylglycerol acyltransferase-1(Dgat1), and diacylglycerol acyltransferase-2(Dgat2) involved in the SREBP-1/FAS signaling pathway were detected to evaluate the effect of DLT on lipid metabolism in diabetic mice. Real-time quantitative PCR was employed to determine the mRNA levels of galectin-3(Gal-3), interleukin-6(IL-6), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1) in mouse liver to evaluate the effect of DLT on inflammatory response in diabetic mice. The results showed that DLT significantly reduced the blood glucose and lipid levels and alleviated the insulin resistance in diabetic mice. Compared with the MC group, DLT significantly up-regulated the protein levels of p-IRβ, PI3 K, and IRS-1(P&lt;0.05 or P&lt;0.01), and down-regulated the protein level of SREBP-1 in liver tissues of diabetic mice(P&lt;0.05). DLT lowered the mRNA levels of SREBP-1 c, FAS, ACC, Dgat1, and Dgat2 related to lipid metabolism as well as those of Gal-3, IL-6, and MCP-1 associated with inflammation in the livers of diabetic mice(P&lt;0.05 or P&lt;0.01). The findings of this study suggest that DLT may alleviate insulin resistance in diabetic mice by regulating IRS-1/PI3 K/Akt signaling pathway and SREBP-1/FAS signaling pathway to reduce lipid production and inhibit inflammatory response.

Objectives: We aimed to develop and validate radiologic scores from [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT and MRI to guide individualized induction chemotherapy (IC) for patients with T3N1M0 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC)., Methods: A total of 542 T3N1M0 patients who underwent pretreatment [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT and MRI were enrolled in the training cohort. A total of 174 patients underwent biopsy of one or more cervical lymph nodes. Failure-free survival (FFS) was the primary endpoint. The radiologic score, which was calculated according to the number of risk factors from the multivariate model, was used for risk stratification. The survival difference of patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) with or without IC was then compared in risk-stratified subgroups. Another cohort from our prospective clinical trial (N = 353, NCT03003182) was applied for validation., Results: The sensitivity of [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT was better than that of MRI (97.7% vs. 87.1%, p < 0.001) for diagnosing histologically proven metastatic cervical lymph nodes. Radiologic lymph node characteristics were independent risk factors for FFS (all p < 0.05). High-risk patients (n = 329) stratified by radiologic score benefited from IC (5-year FFS: IC + CCRT 83.5% vs. CCRT 70.5%; p = 0.0044), while low-risk patients (n = 213) did not. These results were verified again in the validation cohort., Conclusions: T3N1M0 patients were accurately staged by both [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT and MRI. Biochar, a carbonaceous material with engineering potential, has gained attention as an efficient catalyst in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs). Although biomass feedstocks are known as a critical factor for the performance of biochar, the relationship between the catalytic efficiency/mechanism and the types of biomass feedstocks is still unclear. Thus, according to recent advances in experimental and theoretical researches, this paper provides a systematic review of the properties of biochar, and the relationship between catalytic performance in PS-AOPs and biomass feedstocks, where the differences in physicochemical properties (surface properties, pore structure, etc.) and activation path of different sourced biochars, are introduced. In addition, how the tailoring of biochar (such as heteroatomic doping and co-pyrolysis of biomass) affects its activation efficiency and mechanism in PS-AOPs is summarized. Finally, the suitable application scenarios or systems of different sourced biochars, appropriate methods to improve the catalytic performance of different types of biochar and the prospects and challenges for the development of biochar in PS-AOPs are proposed., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: We aimed to develop and prospectively validate a risk score model to guide individualized concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for patients with stage II nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) era., Materials and Methods: In total, 1220 patients who received CCRT or IMRT alone were enrolled in this study, including a training cohort (n = 719), a validation cohort (n = 307), and a prospective test cohort (n = 194). Patients were stratified into different risk groups by a risk score model based on independent prognostic factors, which were developed in the training cohort. Survival rates were compared by the log-rank test. The validation and prospective test cohorts were used for validation., Results: Total tumor volume, Epstein-Barr virus DNA, and lactate dehydrogenase were independent risk factors for failure-free survival (FFS, all p < 0.05). A risk score model based on these three risk factors was developed to classify patients into low-risk group (no risk factor, n = 337) and high-risk group (one or more factors, n = 382) in the training cohort. In the high-risk group, CCRT had better survival rates than IMRT alone (5-year FFS: 82.6% vs. 74.0%, p = 0.028). However, there was no survival difference between CCRT and IMRT alone either in the whole training cohort (p = 0.15) or in the low-risk group (p = 0.15). The results were verified in the validation and prospective test cohorts., Conclusion: A risk score model was developed and prospectively validated to precisely select high-risk stage II NPC patients who can benefit from CCRT, and thus guided individualized treatment in IMRT era., (© 2021 The Authors. Proteins in Jumonji family function as histone demethylases and participate in cardiac development. Jumonji domain containing 5 (JMJD5) is responsible for the embryonic development through removing methyl moieties from H3K36me2 histone, and has pro-proliferative effect on heart and eye development. However, the protective role of JMJD5 against oxygen-glucose deprivation and reperfusion (OGD/R)-induced injury in cardiomyocytes has not been fully understood. Firstly, myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) rat model was established by ligation of left coronary artery. OGD/R was performed in non-transfected H9C2 or H9C2 transfected with pcDNA-JMJD5 plasmid to induce cell cytotoxicity. Data from qRT-PCR and western blot showed that JMJD5 was reduced in the heart tissues of myocardial I/R rat model and OGD/R-induced H9C2. Secondly, JMJD5 over-expression attenuated OGD/R-induced decrease in cell viability and increase in lactate dehydrogenase secretion and cell apoptosis in H9C2. Mitophagy was promoted by pcDNA-mediated over-expression of JMJD5 with enhanced protein expression of LC3-I, LC3-II, Atg5, and Beclin 1. Thirdly, knockdown of JMJD5 aggravated OGD/R-induced decrease in hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), whereas JMJD5 over-expression enhanced BNIP3 (Bcl-2/adenovirus E1B 19-kDa interacting protein) through upregulation of HIF-1α. Lastly, BNIP3 silencing promoted cell apoptosis, suppressed mitophagy, and attenuated the protective effects of JMJD5 over-expression against OGD/R-induced injury in H9C2. Biochar as an emerging carbonaceous material has exhibited a great potential in environmental application for its perfect adsorption ability. However, there are abundant persistent free radicals (PFRs) in biochar, so the direct and indirect PFRs-mediated removal of organic and inorganic contaminants by biochar was widely reported. In order to comprehend deeply the formation of PFRs in biochar and their interactions with contaminants, this paper reviews the formation mechanisms of PFRs in biochar and the PFRs-mediated environmental applications of biochar in recent years. Finally, future challenges in this field are also proposed. Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effects of Biejia Yugan Granule on hepatic fibrosis caused by compound factors in rats and its effect on TGF-β1/Smads signaling pathway. Methods: SD rats were randomly divided into blank control group, model control group, colchicine group, Biejia Yugan Granule low, medium and high dose (1.85, 3.70, 7.40 g/kg) groups ( n = 8 in each group). The rat model of hepatic fibrosis was established by treating with 5% alcohol 15 ml/kg (ig) everyday and injecting with 40% carbon tetrachloride (sc) twice a week for 42 days. The effects of Biejia Yugan Granule on liver function, liver index and water content, serum hepatic fibrosis related indicators, key proteins and gene expression of TGF-β1/Smads signaling pathway in rats were observed. Results: Biejia Yugan Granule at the doses of 1.85, 3.70 and 7.40 g/kg could decrease the serum levels of ALT, AST, ALP and HA, PCⅢ, C-Ⅳ, LN significantly, reduce the water content of liver tissue leads to the decrease of liver index, regulate the liver tissue TGF-β1, Smad3 mRNA and Smad7 mRNA expressions. Conclusion: Biejia Yugan Granule has obvious effects of reducing enzyme and protecting liver and inhibiting hepatic fibrosis, and inhibiting TGF-β1/Smads signaling pathway is one of its mechanisms of anti-hepatic fibrosis.

Objective: To investigate the effects of Butylphthalide (NBP) on airway mucus hypersecretion, interleukin-13 (IL-13) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in asthmatic mice. Methods: The mice were randomly divided into control group, asthma group, DEX group and high, medium and low doses of NBP (100, 50, 25 mg/kg) groups ( n =12). Ovalbumin (OVA) injection was sensitized on the 1st, 8th, and 15th day of the experiment, and OVA was inhaled on the 22nd day to stimulate for 5 weeks to replicate the asthma model, and 20 mg/kg of NBP was given for intervention before the challenge. Finally, the asthma behavior, the secretion of goblet cells and Mucin 5ac (Muc5ac)were observed, and meanwhile the viscosity of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the levels of Muc5ac, IL-13 and TNF-α in BALF were measured by ELISA. Results: Compared with the control group, the degree of sneezing, nose scratching and asthma, the proliferation of airway epithelial goblet cells and secretion of Muc5ac in the asthma group were increased significantly ( P ＜0.01), meanwhile, the viscosity of BALF and the contents of Muc5ac, IL-13 and TNF-α were also increased significantly ( P ＜0.01). Compared with the asthma group, the above behavioral scores of asthma were decreased significantly ( P ＜0.01) after the intervention of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg NBP, as well as the proliferation of airway epithelial goblet cells, secretion of Muc5ac, the viscosity of BALF and the contents of Muc5ac, IL-13 and TNF-α were significantly lower than those of the asthma group ( P ＜0.05, 0.01). Conclusion: NBP has the effect of anti-asthma by inhibiting mucus hypersecretion, and one of its mechanisms is to alleviate the abnormal expressions of IL-13 and TNF-α.

Background: Depression in essential tremor (ET) has been constantly studied and reported, while the associated brain activity changes remain unclear. Recently, regional homogeneity (ReHo), a voxel-wise local functional connectivity (FC) analysis of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, has provided a promising way to observe spontaneous brain activity., Methods: Local FC analyses were performed in forty-one depressed ET patients, 49 non-depressed ET patients and 43 healthy controls (HCs), and then matrix FC and clinical depression severity correlation analyses were further performed to reveal spontaneous neural activity changes in depressed ET patients., Results: Compared with the non-depressed ET patients, the depressed ET patients showed decreased ReHo in the bilateral cerebellum lobules IX, and increased ReHo in the bilateral anterior cingulate cortices and middle prefrontal cortices. Twenty-five significant changes of ReHo clusters were observed in the depressed ET patients compared with the HCs, and matrix FC analysis further revealed that inter-ROI FC differences were also observed in the frontal-cerebellar-anterior cingulate cortex pathway. Correlation analyses showed that clinical depression severity was positively correlated with the inter-ROI FC values between the anterior cingulate cortex and bilateral middle prefrontal cortices and was negatively correlated with the inter-ROI FC values of the anterior cingulate cortex and bilateral cerebellum lobules IX., Conclusion: Our findings revealed local and inter-ROI FC differences in frontal-cerebellar-anterior cingulate cortex circuits in depressed ET patients, and among these regions, the cerebellum lobules IX, middle prefrontal cortices and anterior cingulate cortices could function as pathogenic structures underlying depression in ET patients.

Low-cost biochar adsorbent owning great potential for environmental remediation faces a bottleneck in application for its unsatisfied adsorption performance. Compared to the efforts on increasing adsorption capacity, improving adsorption speed which is important for treatment efficiency is often neglected. Herein, a hierarchical porous biochar (HPB) derived from shrimp shell was prepared and exhibited good adsorption capacity (Q m >300 mg/g) and fast adsorptive equilibrium (≤10 min) towards three typical aromatic organics, whose adsorption universality was further proved by two-way ANOVA analysis. Whereafter, model analysis demonstrated that, the adsorptive forms (mono- and multi-layers) on HPB depended on whether the contaminant is charged. Compared to the benzene-ring site of organics, the charged site contributed 5.13 times to adsorption promotion in monolayer but -0.49 times in inhibition for multilayers forms. Simultaneously, functional group sites contributed relatively weak (0.023 to 0.342 times only). Following structural control revealed that, hierarchical pore structure of HPB was the key for the fast adsorption speed, and highly graphitic structure was important for the high adsorption capacity. To develop a metal-free biochar with high and inherent catalytic activity towards refractory and highly toxic contaminants in advanced oxidation processes, it is necessary to explore its reaction pathways and responsible catalytic sites. Herein, a metal-free biochar derived from corn cob (CCBC) was prepared and used for reaction pathway analysis during peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation. The pyrolysis temperature played an important role for regulating the biochar structure and properties, and CCBC obtained at 800 °C showed the best adsorption capacity and catalytic activity towards five typical organic pollutants, including 2, 4-dichlorophenol, Tetracycline hydrochloride, Ciprofloxacin, Methyl orange and Rhodamine B, due to its richer pore and defect structure. Further treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater demonstrated the good efficiency and potential of this metal-free catalyst for practical application. Radical (58% contribution) and non-radical (42% contribution) pathways were both found in CCBC/PDS system. Background: Medication and behavior therapy are the conventional treatments for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but they have limitations for preschool children. Evidence suggests that pediatric tuina, which is a modality of traditional Chinese medicine, might have beneficial effects on this condition., Objective: To assess the feasibility of conducting an RCT in terms of recruitment, use, and acceptability of the parent-administered pediatric tuina for ADHD symptoms in preschoolers., Methods: It is a single-center, two-arm, parallel, open-label, pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT). Sixty children with pre-specified ADHD symptoms (hyperactivity, anxiety, and sleep disturbance) together with one of their parents will be recruited and randomized into two groups at a 1:1 ratio. Parents in the parent-administered tuina group (intervention group, n = 30) will attend an online training program to learn pediatric tuina skills for ADHD symptoms and conduct this treatment on their children at home. Parents in the parent-child interaction group (comparison group, n = 30) will attend an online training about progressive muscle relaxation exercise and do this exercise with their children at home. Additional teaching materials will be provided to the participants in both groups. Both interventions should be carried out every other day during a 2-month treatment period, with each time around 20 min. Assessment will be performed at baseline, week 4, and week 8. The primary outcome measure is the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham parent scale; the secondary outcomes include preschool anxiety scale, children's sleep habits questionnaire, and parental stress scale. A process evaluation embedded within the outcome evaluation will be performed. Differences in the scale scores and test parameters between groups will be examined using a linear mixed-effects model. Qualitative data will be analyzed using thematic content analysis, facilitated by QSR NVivo., Discussion: This study will provide evidence on the acceptability and feasibility of pediatric tuina for ADHD in preschool children. Objective: To investigate the prevention and treatment effect of Biejia Yugan Granule (BYG) on ethanol-induced hepatic fibrosis (EHF) rats. Methods: SD rats were randomly divided into blank control group, model group, BYG group, colchicine group and BYG low and BYG high dose groups ( n =8). The EHF rat model was established by intragastric edible ethanol with a gradually increased dose. Briefly, the rats of model group, colchicine group and BYG low and high dose groups were given gavage of 5 g/(kg·d) ethanol at week 1～4, 7 g/(kg·d) ethanol at week 5～8, 9 g/(kg·d) ethanol at week 9～12 and 9.5 g/(kg·d) ethanol at week 13～24. And the other two groups were treated with equal volume water. At the same time, the corresponding drugs were administrated daily: BYG group was treated with Biejia Yugan Granules 5.55 g/kg, colchicine group was treated with colchicine 0.1 mg/kg, BYG low-dose and high-group were treated with Biejia Yugan Granules 1.85 and 5.55 g/kg respectively. The blank control group and model control group were given the same amount of purified water. On the 169th day of the experiment, the effects of BYG on the macroscopic changes of rat liver organs, the water content of liver tissue and the pathological changes of fibrosis, the content of hydroxy proline (Hyp) in liver tissue and the expression levels of α-SMA and CREB were observed. Results: BYG at the doses of 1.85 and 5.55 g/kg could significantly improve the macroscopic changes of liver and pathological changes of liver tissue fibrosis in rats with EHF, reduce the contents of water and Hyp in liver tissue, and down-regulate the expressions of α-SMA and CREB. Conclusion: BYG has obvious effect on inhibiting EHF and one of its mechanisms is down-regulate the content of CREB.

Boron doped ordered mesoporous carbon (BMC) was prepared to improve the adsorption of Pb(II). The effects of several parameters such as contact time, pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption by both pristine ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) and BMC were investigated. Thermodynamic, sorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics models were used to study the adsorption mechanisms by each of the adsorbents. Based on intraparticle diffusion model, the adsorption process by the two adsorbents mainly involved the quick liquid-film diffusion stage and slow pore diffusion portion, and fitting experimental data with Temkin model indicates that the adsorption process by both of the adsorbents involve physisorption and chemisorption. Based on Langmuir model, the estimated maximum adsorption capacity for BMC was about 1.3 times higher than the pristine OMC. Moreover, BMC retained good adsorption performance in tap and lake water, and could be regenerated effectively and recycled using EDTA. The results suggested that BMC, with enhanced adsorption performance compared with OMC, could be considered as very effective and promising materials for Pb (II) removal from wastewater., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. A stability-enhanced magnetic catalyst, composed of α-Fe 2 O 3 @Fe 3 O 4 shell-core magnetic nanoparticles and graphene oxide (MGO), was prepared and characterized by scanning electron micrope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). Catalyst synthesis was used to efficiently activate persulfate for the removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). A magnetic nanoparticle:GO mass ratio of 5 (MGO-5) exhibited a better catalytic efficiency and could be effectively reused four times. The influences of the pollutant, catalyst, and oxidant concentrations were investigated, and the intrinsic relationships among these factors and the degradation kinetic constant were evaluated by a fitting method. It was found that the catalytic degradation process in the MGO-5-persulfate-2,4-DCP system was most likely dominated by an interfacial catalytic reaction, with an activation energy of 13.88 kJ/mol. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that both sulfate radicals (SO 4 - ) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) were responsible for 2,4-DCP removal, but surface-bounded SO 4 - played a greater role. Chloride ions at a concentration of 0-60 mg/L had no effect on 2,4-DCP removal. Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effects of Radix Angelicae Sinensis (RADA) on airway mucus hypersecretion and the tumor necrosis factor-α/ nuclear factor- κB (TNF-α/NF-κB) signaling pathway in Yin-deficiency asthma mice. Methods: KM mice were randomly divided into control group, model group, ambroxol group and RADA low, medium and high dose (2, 4 and 8 g/kg) group( n =12). Ovalbumin and the thyroid gland were used to replicate the model of Yin-deficiency asthma. Asthma symptoms in mice , immune globulin E (IgE) , TNF-α , and the expressions of Mucin 5ac (Muc5ac) and NF- κB in lung tissue were observed under the intervention of RADA. Results: RADA at the doses of 2,4 and 8 g/kg could alleviate the asthma symptoms of Yin-deficiency asthma mice significantly, reduce the levels of IgE in serum and TNF-α in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and inhibite the overexpressions of Muc5ac and NF- κB in lung tissue. Conclusion: RADA has significant anti-asthmatic effect. One of its mechanisms is to inhibit TNF-α/NF- κB signaling pathway and to alleviate airway mucus hypersecretion.

The activation of persulfate to produce active radicals has been attracting wide attention in environmental remediation fields. Among various catalysts, non-metal carbocatalysts and carbon-based composites have shown attractive prospects given that they are environmental-friendly, highly efficient, abundant, and diverse. In this paper, the use of carbon-based magnetic nanocomposites as catalysts for persulfate activation was reviewed and discussed. The preparation methods of carbon-based magnetic nanocomposites were first briefly summarized. Subsequently, the use of activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, biochar, and nanodiamond-based magnetic composites to activate persulfate was discussed, respectively. A synergetic effect between carbon materials and magnetic nanoparticles facilitated the activation process because of the increased electron transfer capacity, good dispersity of magnetic nanoparticles, and good repeatability and separability. Both radical and non-radical pathways were detected in the activation processes, but the specific mechanisms were greatly influenced by the components of the catalyst and solution conditions. And fundamental studies were needed to clarify the inner mechanisms of the process. In the end, strategies for enhancing the catalytic performances of carbon-based magnetic nanocomposites were suggested. It is expected that this review will provide some inspirations for developing highly efficient and green catalyst, as well as sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation technology for the remediation water environment.

Humic acid (HA) is ubiquitous in the environment, and its effect on the adsorption of pollutants onto biochar (BC) has been widely investigated. However, the catalytic degradation of organic contaminants induced by persistent free radicals (PFRs) in BC is not negligible. In this study, two different source of external HA, dissolved HA and coated HA, was employed to assess the effect of HA on the degradation of organic contaminant ciprofloxacin (CIP) by PFRs in BC. Results showed that relatively low concentration of dissolved HA promoted the removal of CIP from 59.78% (control) to 66.70% (5 mg/L dissolved HA) by BC, but higher concentration of dissolved HA inhibited. By contrast, coated HA altered the characteristics of BC and had negative impact on organics removal. The removal of CIP by BC in the presence of HA did not have a great difference at pH 6-9, and increasing dissolved oxygen promoted CIP degradation. In addition, the contribution of CIP removal led by adsorption was 47.61%, 41.62% and 47.84% respectively for BC, BC + dissolved HA and 1% HA coated BC. Correspondingly, the contribution of CIP removal led by •OH induced from PFRs in BC was respectively 21.88%, 35.58% and 25.11%, and the contribution led by PFRs themselves oxidation was 30.51%, 22.80% and 27.05%, respectively. The calculated contributions of adsorption and degradation to CIP removal demonstrated that the contribution of degradation to CIP removal led by •OH increased, while the contribution led by PFRs themselves oxidation was inhibited in the presence of dissolved and coated HA., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Novel Nb-doped Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. XRD, Raman spectra, XPS and SEM were adopted to analyze the structure and morphology of the samples, then the structure-dependent optical properties, photoelectric behavior and photocatalytic activities were investigated, and the structure-property relationship was also discussed. The results show that doping Nb 5+ can increase the oxygen vacancies in the Bi 2 WO 6 lattice and reduce the optical band gap of Bi 2 WO 6 . The oxygen vacancies also act as electron traps, which promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Hence, compared with the pure Bi 2 WO 6 , the as-prepared Nb-doped Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets exhibit enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for removing contaminants in water such as rhodamine B and tetracycline., Competing Interests: The authors confirm that they have no conflict of interest., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Landfill leachate was pretreated by chemical flocculation with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) as a flocculant, and subsequently purified by the microelectrolysis-Fenton (MEF) process. Response surface methodology was employed to optimize the MEF process, and the optimal conditions were initial pH 3.20, H 2 O 2 concentration 3.57 g/L, and Fe-C dosage 104.52 g/L. The PAC coagulation combined with MEF processes obtained a superior decontamination performance, and the predicted chemical oxygen demand (COD) and humic acids (HA) removal were respectively 90.27% and 93.79%. The strong fluorescence peak at 425 nm and the trapping experiment showed that ⋅ OH was generated during MEF, which had a strong oxidation ability to degrade organic recalcitrant pollutants. The ultraviolet-visible spectra and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrices spectra (3D-EEMs) indicated that PAC coagulation could preferentially remove protein-like substances, while the MEF process was effective in destructing organic recalcitrant pollutants, especially humic-like and fulvic-like substances.

This paper reviews the recent achievements in the enhanced production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from waste activated sludge (WAS). The enhanced strategies are divided into two approaches. The first strategy focuses on the regulation of carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio by co-digestion of WAS with carbon-rich substrates, including municipal solid wastes (MSW), marine algae, agricultural residues, and animal manures. The other strategy is to enhance the solubilization and hydrolysis of WAS or inhibit the methanogenesis by applying various pretreatments, such as mechanical, chemical, enzymatic, and thermal pretreatment. Finally, the applications of WAS-derived VFAs are discussed. The future researches in enhancing VFAs production and wide application of the VFAs from both technical and economic perspectives are proposed.

Electronic medical records (EMRs), such as hospital discharge summaries, contain a wealth of information only expressed in natural language. Automated methods for extracting information from these records must be able to recognize medical concepts in text and their semantic context. A contextual property critical to reason on information from EMRs is the doctor's belief status or assertion of the patient's medical problem. Research on the medical assertion classification (MAC) can establish the foundation for various health data analyses and clinical applications. However, previous MAC studies are mainly based on traditional machine learning methods which mostly require manually constructed features and the original unlabeled data cannot be easily and effectively applied to classification or classification tasks. Furthermore, external medical knowledge such as various medical dictionary bases, which provides rich explain and definition information about medical entity, is rarely utilized in existing neural network models of medical information extraction. In this study, we propose a deep neural network architecture enhanced by medical knowledge attention layer through combining GRU neural network with CNN model to classify the assertion type of medical problem such as disease and symptom in Chinese EMRs. The attention layer in the model is applied to integrate entity representations learned from medical dictionary bases as query for encoding. Experimental results on own manually annotated corpus indicate our approach achieves better performance compared to existing methods.

As a widely used antibiotic, tetracycline has a huge hidden danger to human health. Municipal sludge rich in organic substances has the potential to produce biochar. In this work, the municipal sludge biochar from solid waste was modified by the alkali-acid binding method, and tetracycline was efficiently removed from the aqueous solution, the adsorption removal efficiency reached to 86% at initial concentration of 200 mg/L. The activation energy was determined by analyzing the adsorption kinetics at different temperatures and tetracycline concentrations. The results showed that tetracycline adsorption on modified biochar was endothermic reaction. Presenting the Langmuir-Freundlich model, adsorption site energy distributions was reckoned. The average adsorption site energy and corresponding standard deviation of the adsorption site energy distribution were deduced emphatically to inquiry the strength of tetracycline adsorption on modified biochar and the adsorption site heterogeneity. The method proposed of research further proves that modified biochar from sewage sludge remove tetracycline from contaminated water has great potential, and exploration of tetracycline adsorption mechanisms by quantifying average site energy. A heterogeneous catalyst (M-N-rGO) composed of stability enhanced magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide was synthesized and characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, and XPS. It showed excellent catalytic degradation properties in advanced oxidation technology. In the presence of 200 mg/L catalyst and 135 mg/L persulfate at pH 5, 95% of 10-20 mg/L methylene blue could be degraded in 90 min with the TOC removal efficiency of 50%. The rate constant based on pseudo-first-order kinetics ranged from 0.0227 to 0.0488/min in the temperature range of 15 to 32 °C, and the activation energy was 32.5 kJ/mol. Under the optimal operation conditions, 20 mg/L of 2,4-dichlorophneol (2,4-DCP) could be removed almost completely. EPR analysis showed that sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were responsible for degradation of pollutants, and radical quenching experiments indicated that nonradical pathway also played a role in pollutant removal. And a mechanism for M-N-rGO and persulfate system was elucidated. This catalyst was easy for preparation, low-cost, highly effective, convenient for separation, and could be used effectively for four times through 0.1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 regeneration. It provided a choice for wastewater treatment in practice.

Background: Depression is one of the most common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), but its pathogenesis is still not very clear. Recently, degree centrality, a voxel-level whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) analysis of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, has provided the most promising way to explore the neural network mechanisms underlying depressed PD., Methods: Degree centrality, voxel-wise image and clinical symptoms correlation and secondary seed-based FC analyses were performed in twenty-seven drug-naïve, early stage depressed PD patients, 27 non-depressed PD patients and 27 healthy controls (HCs) to reveal voxel-level whole-brain FC changes in depressed PD., Results: Compared with the HCs, depressed PD and non-depressed PD patients shared similar brain degree centrality abnormalities mainly in the basal ganglia, insular cortex, motor cortices, default mode network, prefrontal gyrus and the cerebellum. However, compared with non-depressed PD, depressed PD showed degree centrality abnormalities in the right middle prefrontal gyrus, anterior cingulate cortices, supplementary motor cortices and cerebellum lobule VI. The right middle prefrontal gyrus degree centrality abnormalities were correlated with the clinical depression severity, and using it as a seed, a secondary seed-based FC analysis further revealed the FC changes in the anterior cingulate cortices and the cerebellum lobule VI., Conclusions: Our findings revealed that dysfunction in extensive brain areas were involved in depressed PD, and among these regions, the right middle prefrontal gyrus, anterior cingulate cortices and the cerebellum may pose as pathogenesis hubs underlying depressed PD., (Copyright © 2018. Highly efficient simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) contamination from water was accomplished by nitrogen-functionalized magnetic ordered mesoporous carbon (N-Fe/OMC). The mutual effects and inner mechanisms of their adsorption onto N-Fe/OMC were systematically investigated by sole and binary systems, and thermodynamic, sorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics models. The liquid-film diffusion step might be the rate-limiting step for PNP and Pb(II). The fitting of experimental data with Temkin model indicates that the adsorption process of PNP and Pb(II) involve physisorption and chemisorption. There exist site competition and enhancement of PNP and Pb(II) on the sorption to N-Fe/OMC. Moreover, N-Fe/OMC could be regenerated effectively and recycled by using dilute NaOH and acetone. These demonstrated superior properties of N-Fe/OMC indicate that it could be applied to treatment of wastewaters containing both lead and PNP., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)

A label-free electrochemical sensor, based on a classic lead ions (Pb 2+ )-dependent GR-5DNAzyme as the catalytic unit, disodium-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) as DNA intercalator, and nanoporous gold (NPG) for signal amplification, was designed for sensitive and selective detection of Pb 2+ . Firstly, NPG modified electrode surface were employed as a platform for the immobilization of thiolated probe DNA, and then, hybridized with DNAzyme catalytic beacons. The Pb 2+ -induced catalytic reaction makes the substrate strand break at the cleavage sitGe irreversibly, which disturbs the formation of DNA strands. AQDS served as an indicator that intercalated into the base-pairing regions of DNAzyme, resulting in a strong electrochemical signal. In the presence of Pb 2+ , the complementary regions were reduced, due to the fracture of the DNA strand, resulting in the release of AQDS. And a decreased current was obtained, corresponding to Pb 2+ concentration. Taking advantage of the amplification effect of NPG electrode for increasing the reaction sites of thiol modified capture probe, the proposed electrochemical biosensor could detect Pb 2+ quantitatively, in the range of 1-120nM, with a limit of detection as low as 0.02nM, which is much lower than the maximum contamination level for Pb 2+ in drinking water defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The electrochemical sensor was also used to detect Pb 2+ from real water samples, and the results showed excellent agreement with the values determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. Orexin is a member of neuropeptides which was first identified in the hypothalamus. The globus pallidus is a key structure in the basal ganglia, which is involved in both normal motor function and movement disorders. Morphological studies have shown the expression of both OX1 and OX2 receptors in the globus pallidus. Employing single unit extracellular recordings and behavioural tests, the direct in vivo electrophysiological and behavioural effects of orexin-A in the globus pallidus were studied. Micro-pressure administration of orexin-A significantly increased the spontaneous firing rate of pallidal neurons. Correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between orexin-A induced excitation and the basal firing rate. Furthermore, application of the specific OX1 receptor antagonist, SB-334867, decreased the firing rate of pallidal neurons, suggesting that endogenous orexinergic systems modulate the firing activity of pallidal neurons. Orexin-A increased the excitability of pallidal neurons through both OX1 and OX2 receptors. In 6-hydroxydopamine parkinsonian rats, orexin-A-induced increase in firing rate of pallidal neurons was stronger than that in normal rats. Immunostaining revealed positive OX1 receptor expression in the globus pallidus of both normal and parkinsonian rats. Finally, postural test showed that unilateral microinjection of orexin-A led to contralateral deflection in the presence of systemic haloperidol administration. Further elevated body swing test revealed that pallidal orexin-A and SB-334867 induced contralateral-biased swing and ipsilateral-biased swing respectively. Objective: To investigate the chemical components and the activity of anti-endometrial cancer cells of the petroleum ether extract in Scutellariae barbatae and Hedyotis diffusa and the herb pair., Methods: Main composition analysis and identification were determined by the GC-MS technology combined with Kovats retention index( KI). Activity of anti-endometrial cancer cells was researched by MTT assay., Results: Unsaturated fatty acid,esters,sterol and other compounds in Scutellariae barbatae,Hedyotis diffusa and the herb pair were identified by GC-MS. Hedyotis diffusa and the herb pair contained more anthraquinones which distinguished from Scutellariae barbatae. The IC50 values for HEC-1A cells of petroleum ether extract in Scutellariae barbatae and Hedyotis diffusa and the herb pair were 275. 204 μg / m L,105. 826 μg / m L,148. 645 μg / m L. The IC50 values for Ishikawa cells of petroleum ether extract in Scutellariae barbatae and Hedyotis diffusa and the herb pair are 189. 114 μg / m L,77. 974 μg / m L,137. 999 μg / m L., Conclusion: Petroleum ether extract in Scutellariac barbatae and Hedyotis diffusa and the herb pair has inhibition effect on the proliferation of HEC-1A and Ishikawa cells,the Hedyotis diffusa has the strongest activity of anti-endometrial cancer. It is speculated that the strongest activity could be related to the higher content of anthraquinones.

This study was aimed at evaluating the hypouricemic effect of the anthocyanin-rich purple sweet potato extract (APSPE). In vitro, APSPE has been proved to significantly inhibit XO activity in a dose-dependent manner. In vivo, APSPE could not only inhibit the XO activity in mouse liver, but also reduce the serum uric acid level in hyperuricemic mice and affect the expression of mRNA levels of related renal transporters, such as mURAT1, mGLUT9, mOAT1 and mOCTN2. Moreover, APSPE could effectively regulate BUN and Cr levels to normal and decrease the inflammatory cellular influx in the tubule of the hyperuricemic mice. This study indicates the potential clinical utility of APSPE as a safe and effective anti-hyperuricemia bioactive agent or functional food.

Waste-activated sludge (WAS) solubilized remarkably after enzymatic-enhanced anaerobic digestion, but its dewaterability was deteriorated. In this study, a novel method was performed to improve the dewaterability of enzymatic-enhanced anaerobic digestion sludge by adding CaCl2 (0.01~1.00 g/g total sludge). The capillary suction time (CST), moisture content, and filtrate turbidity were employed to characterize the dewaterability of WAS, and the possible mechanisms involved were clarified. The results showed the dewaterability did not worsen when CaCl2 was added before sludge digestion, and the CST, moisture content, and filtrate turbidity were notably reduced with the increase of CaCl2 dosage. It also shown that calcium ions played an important role in the bioflocculation of digested sludge by neutralizing negative charges on the surface of sludge. In addition, soluble protein initially lowered a little and then observably improved with the addition of CaCl2, while soluble carbohydrate was reduced sharply first and then bounced back afterwards. The interactions between calcium ions and the biopolymer further enhanced the dewatering of sludge through bridging of colloidal particles together.

Magnetic Fe/Ni nanoparticles doped bimodal mesoporous carbon (MBMC) was prepared for highly effective adsorption of cationic dye methylene blue (MB) and anionic dye methyl orange (MO). Structure characterization demonstrated that Fe/Ni nanoparticles were embedded into the interior of the mesoprous carbon, and MBMC maintained ordered and bimodal mesopores. The effects of several parameters such as contact time, pH, temperature, ionic strength and dye molecular structure on the adsorption were investigated. Alkaline pH was better for MB adsorption, while acidic pH was more favorable for MO uptake. The adsorption capacity was slightly enhanced when existing ion concentrations increased. Adsorption on MBMC was affected by the molecular structures of different dyes, and both primary and secondary pores of MBMC were involved in dye adsorption. The adsorption kinetics fitted well with pseudo-second-order model and exhibited 3-stage intraparticle diffusion mode. Equilibrium data were best described by Langmuir model, and the estimated maximum adsorption capacity for MB and MO was 959.5mg/g and 849.3mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Moreover, the adsorbent could be regenerated using ethanol, and the regenerated adsorbent after seven cycles could retain over 80% of the adsorption capacity for the fresh adsorbent. Unlabelled: BACKGROWND: Macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (MIP-l α/CCL3) belongs to the C-C chemokine family (CCL3), which can be secreted by macrophages, other types of hematopoietic cells and bone marrow stromal cells. Higher levels of MIP-1α were found to be associated with several kinds of hematologic malignancies, including multiple myeloma (MM), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Moreover, MIP-1α has been reported to be an adverse prognostic factor for CLL. However, the impact of MIP-1α on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has been poorly investigated., Objective: To investigate the influence of MIP-1α on proliferction of AML cells., Methods: Using MLL-AF9 induced AML mouse model, the expression of MIP-1α was measured by real time quantitative RT-PCR. AML cell proliferation was examined by cell counting and colony forming assay (CFC). The influence of blocking the MIP-1α action on the growth and pathogenic ability of AML cells was explored by using the small molecule antagonist for interfering interaction of MIP-1α with its receptor CCR1., Results: The MIP-1α could promote the proliferation and colony formation of AML cells, the blocking MIP-1a could inhibit the growth of AML cells and delay onset of AML., Conclusion: The MIP-1a promotes the occurence and progression of AML, therefore blocking the MIP-1α signal pathway may be served as a strategy to inhibit the growth of AML cells, and MIP-1α can be a potential target for treatment of AML.
