Friedrich Wegener was the author of a comprehensive description of a disease that was named Wegener's granulomatosis. In 2010, its name was changed to granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), the reason being that Wegener's links to Nazism were revealed. The research was conducted between May 2021 and August 2023 and was based on the historical method (understood as defining the subject of research, critical analysis of collected historical source materials, and historiographical synthesis) using the methods of direct and indirect inference ascribed to the historical method. Wegener and his wife were members of numerous Nazi organizations. He was rewarded for his stance by the German Reich. Together with his family, he lived in very comfortable conditions for the standards of the time, unattainable for the average person. He described himself as a frontline combatant in the Nazi invasion of Poland. Friedrich Wegener's links with Nazism were more extensive than has hitherto been known. The links involved his professional and private life. They testify to his membership in numerous Nazi organizations, as well as his active involvement in the activities of various institutions and communities of the German Reich and his overt expression of support for Hitler. Wegener's numerous accolades from the German Reich providing him with professional, material and personal benefits were proof of his links with the Nazi movement. Several rivers that are tributaries of the Oder estuary are inhabited by Salmo trutta L, the most important of which are Ina, Gowienica, and Wołczenica. Both forms of the species, sea trout and resident brown trout, are present. All rivers are traditionally stocked with either sea trout from the neighboring Pomeranian river Rega basin or resident brown trout from various locations. To examine populations in these rivers in terms of genetic structure, genetic diversity, and origin, they were analyzed using 13 microsatellite loci. Relatedness was also assessed for fish stocked in the same year. The obtained genotypes were compared with breeding stocks used for stocking in Poland. The analyses revealed a significant genetic distance between adult individuals from Ina and Rega Rivers and fish caught during electrofishing. Strong kinship relationships were identified in the sampled areas, with high proportions of fish originating from stocking and their dominance in numbers over wild juveniles, primarily in smaller tributaries. Additionally, clear separation in the origin of stocked individuals was observed. Border militarization can impede people's interactions with nature in borderlands. We surveyed one border community to understand how local use of Białowieża Forest, one of Europe's last primary forest complexes, is affected by militarization. Out of 100 returned surveys, most respondents had a negative view of enforced border security measures (closure of the border zone, construction of a border barrier, military activities). Many felt they were not adequately consulted about these policies. Respondents felt discouraged from visiting Białowieża Forest mainly due to the presence of uniformed services and worsened conditions of forest roads caused by heavy machinery and traffic. Newcomers reported negative impacts on their health and well-being, while people born in the region (locals) had mixed reactions. Although locals were more equivocal in opposing the border barrier than newcomers, both groups perceived the environmental costs of its construction as high and reported a sense of separation from neighboring Belarus., Competing Interests: Declarations. Pedigree indices (PI) and genomically enhanced breeding values (GBV) of Polish Holstein-Friesian heifers were compared with their future performance. Phenotypes of 15,794 cows from 294 herds were analyzed. The traits evaluated included milk, fat and protein yield, somatic cell score (SCC), stature, overall udder and feet and legs score, heifer conception rate, and longevity. PI and GBV were from official evaluation systems, and performance records were adjusted for non-genetic effects. Correlations between breeding values and adjusted phenotypes were analyzed. Additionally, cows within each herd were divided into quartiles based on their breeding values, and the performance of cows from the top and bottom quartiles was compared. For production traits, similar analyses were conducted separately for high and low milk-producing herds to check for possible genotype by environment interaction. The analyses confirmed the significant correlation between breeding values and cow performance. Incorporating genomic information into PI significantly improved the predictive accuracy for milk, fat, and protein yields, as well as for SCC and stature, with increases ranging from 34 to 64%. Comparisons of cows' performance from the top and bottom quartiles supported these observations for all these traits except protein yield, with differences in performance being 43-92% greater when cows were ranked by GBV instead of PI. In a more productive environment, greater differences in performance were found between the top and bottom quartiles. These findings suggest that Polish breeders can enhance the outcomes of their breeding decisions by using GBV instead of PI. This change offers particular benefits in improving the predictability of future performance for the most economically important traits such as milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, somatic cell score, and stature., Competing Interests: Declarations. The purpose of the paper was to apply an Artificial Neural Networks with Radial Basis Function to develop an application model for diagnosing a subclinical ketosis type I and II in dairy cattle. While building the neural network model, applied methodology was compatible to the procedures used in Data Mining processes. The data set was created based on the composition of milk samples of 1520 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows. The milk samples were collected during test-day milkings and made available by Polish Federation of Cattle Breeders and Milk Producers. The milk composition parameters were used as the input variables for RBF network models. The value of the output variable was determined based on the content of β-hydroxybutyric acid in blood of cows. In the next stage of the work, the qualities of the pre-selected models were compared and the best ones were chosen. The sensitivity and specificity as well as the size of the AUC (Area Under the Curve) under the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) were taken as the main criteria for network models evaluation. The model characterized by sensitivity of 0.86, specificity of 0.71 and AUC of 0.89 was selected for ketosis type I. The optimal for ketosis type II showed the sensitivity and specificity 0.81 and 0.75, respectively, and the size of AUC above 0.85. Intro: The article tests the hypothesis that we can draw practical knowledge from the experience of service providers operating in the past. The research questions were formulated: can the historical example of the organization of medical care in the Polish Children's Hospital named after Karol and Maria be used as a viable example today? Is it relevant for contemporary practitioners? And do we still use the knowledge of predecessors? The authors decided to use the interwar Hospital and an operating paediatric ward of the Child-Friendly Hospital for a comparative analysis., Methods: The model of the European Regional Office of the World Health Organization for integrated delivery of health services was adopted as the analysis framework. We based the analysis on descriptive methods, starting with a literature review of routine activities of the Karol and Maria Hospital (historical example) and a paediatric hospital in Poland (contemporary example), then we conducted a comparative transversal study concerning the extent to which integrated care occurs in the WHO model. Finally, the elements of the process evaluation were used in the work., Results: The research model used enabled us to provide answers to the research questions formulated. The comparative study of a historical hospital and a contemporary one has shown that some problems and ways of solving them constantly reappear in the discussion on the management of evidence-based medical care. Europe is highly dependent on soybean meal imports and anticipates an increase of domestic plant protein production. Ongoing climate change resulted in northward shift of plant hardiness zones, enabling spring-sowing of freezing-sensitive crops, including soybean. However, it requires efficient reselection of germplasm adapted to relatively short growing season and long-day photoperiod. In the present study, a PCR array has been implemented, targeting early maturity (E1-E4, E7, E9, and E10), pod shattering (qPHD1), and growth determination (Dt1) genes. This array was optimized for routine screening of soybean diversity panel (204 accessions), subjected to the 2018-2020 survey of phenology, morphology, and yield-related traits in a potential cultivation region in Poland. High broad-sense heritability (0.84-0.88) was observed for plant height, thousand grain weight, maturity date, and the first pod height. Significant positive correlations were identified between the number of seeds and pods per plant, between these two traits and seed yield per plant as well as between flowering, maturity, plant height, and first pod height. PCR array genotyping revealed high genetic diversity, yielding 98 allelic combinations. The most remarkable correlations were identified between flowering and E7 or E1, between maturity and E4 or E7 and between plant height and Dt1 or E4. The study demonstrated high applicability of this PCR array for molecular selection of soybean towards adaptation to Central Europe, designating recessive qPHD1 and dominant Dt1, E3, and E4 alleles as major targets to align soybean growth season requirements with the length of the frost-free period, improve plant performance, and increase yield., Competing Interests: Declarations. The honeybee is one of the most important pollinators in the world. The frequently observed poor health of honeybee colonies can be caused by various factors, e.g. environmental pollution, nutritional stress, and climate changes. Moreover, honeybees are constantly exposed to a wide spectrum of pathogens, such as parasites, bacteria, and viruses. We examined the occurrence of various diseases in different-aged worker honeybees from two colonies kept in natural and laboratory conditions during spring, summer, and autumn in Poland. The honeybees were examined by PCR to detect infection with selected pathogens: Nosema ceranae, N. apis, N. bombi, Acarapis woodi, trypanosomatids, and neogregarines (Mattesia or Apicystis species) and by RT-PCR to identify deformed wing virus (DWV), black queen cell virus (BQCV), and acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV). DWV and N. ceranae turned out to be the dominant pathogens. Trypanosomatids and BQCV were also found in several samples. We did not detect the presence of the other pathogens: N. apis, N. bombi, A. woodi, neogregarines, or ABPV. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The increasing evolution of pathogen resistance is a global problem that requires novel solutions. Recently, an increased interest in ethnomedicinal sources can be observed in the derivation of new medicines. The return to traditional medicinal formulations handed down for generations is being followed, but it is necessary to revise them again, taking into account the generally accepted research protocol., Aim of the Study: We aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial potential of historical deposits of Silesian healing clay (SHC), used in ethnomedicine against Gram-positive bacteria and to assess their biological activity using a primary dermal fibroblast line (NHDF) and a model monocyte line (THP1)., Materials and Methods: Information on medicinal clay deposits that occur in Silesia and are traditionally used in ethnomedicine or ancient medicine and known as terra sigillata Silesiaca or SHC, was selected on available source materials and old prints and maps from the archives of the Polish Geological Institute (Wrocław, Poland). Subsequently, their places of occurrence were identified and traced in the field by taking three deposits from the Silesia territory: Upper Silesia (D1), Opole Silesia (D2), and Lower Silesian (D3) Voivodeships for analysis. Their basic parameters and antimicrobial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria, Gram-positive streptococci and staphylococci, including methicillin-resistant strains, were examined. The study evaluated the effects of clays on growth and vitality using a primary dermal fibroblast line (NHDF) and a monocytic line (THP1). Studies were performed on a cell culture model to determine the effects on tissue regeneration (fibroblasts) and anti-inflammatory effects (monocytes). The study attempted to identify the mechanism of antimicrobial action, especially the textural characteristics and geochemical composition, as well as the environmental reaction (pH)., Results: SHCs were classified into the following textural classes: clay loam (D1), clay (D2), and sand (D3). The tested deposits have antimicrobial properties that reduce the bacterial population (10 4  CFU) compared to the control (10 8  CFU). The antimicrobial effect depends on the type of clay and the species or strain of bacteria used. In-house studies clearly showed that Staphylococcus aureus Pcm 2054 and Staphylococcus epidermidis MRSE ATCC 2538 cells were completely adsorbed by clay minerals from clay D3.13. Furthermore, 10% leachates also showed an antimicrobial effect, as a reduction in bacterial populations was observed ranging from 91 to 100%. The results showed stimulation of fibroblast culture proliferation and inhibition of the growth of inflammatory cells (monocytes)., Conclusion: SHCs tested have antimicrobial potential, in particular D2.7, D2.11, and D3.13. The D3.13 deposit had a bactericidal effect against the staphylococci tested. Aqueous solutions of clays also showed bacteriostatic effect. The presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) on bovine and porcine carcasses during 2019-2023 was investigated. A total of 368 bovine and 87 porcine carcasses were tested using the ISO/TS 13136 standard and the STEC isolates were further characterized with whole genomic sequencing (WGS). It was found that 119 (32.3 %) of bovine and 14 (16.1 %) of porcine carcasses were positive for the stx Shiga toxin gene. Further analysis of the stx-positive samples allowed to isolate 32 (26.9 %) bovine and two (14.3 %) porcine STEC, respectively. Bovine isolates were classified into 21 different serotypes with the most prevalent O168:H8 (3 isolates), whereas two porcine STEC belonged to two serotypes that were not identified in bovine strains. Isolates of bovine carcass origin were mainly positive for the stx2 Shiga toxin gene, either alone or in combination with stx1 type (26 of 32; 81.2 % isolates). Two STEC from porcine carcasses were positive for the stx2e variant only. All STEC, irrespective of the origin, were negative for the eae intimin gene. MLST and cgMLST analyses of all strains tested revealed that they were diverse. However, a close molecular relationship between some bovine isolates based on cgMLST schemes was observed. Comparison of the current bovine STEC with those isolated between 2014 and 2018 showed that some of them consisted of the same MLST sequence types. The benefits and risks of delivery should always be considered before initiating preinduction cervical ripening and labor induction. Understanding the benefits and potential complications is crucial for healthcare professionals to make informed decisions and provide optimal care. The research was conducted retrospectively between January 2019 and July 2022. It involved the analysis of the medical records of 154 pregnant women staying in the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the city of Szczecin and 150 pregnant women hospitalized in the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the town of Schwedt/Oder in Germany. Inclusion criteria were consent to participate and the implementation of internal written protocols in line with national guidelines for labor induction. The research concerned a group of pregnant women with postdate pregnancy, calculated according to the Naegele's rule and confirmed by the USG examination conducted in the first trimester of the pregnancy, as well as an unfavorable cervix that received less than 6 points in the Bishop score. Moreover, the pregnant patients with a low biophysical profile and an abnormal record of CTG or comorbidities were also included, as these factors determined the classification of the group above. The study did not include patients who had undergone cesarean section. The average change in evaluation of the cervix marked on the Bishop Score was higher in Germany, and it was 2.7 points, whereas in Poland, it was 1.6 points. The largest percentage of the scores on the Apgar Scale in the first, third and fifth minutes after birth was in the norm and indicated a good health condition of infants. They reached 8 to 10 points in both countries. Significantly more infants in Germany received pH from the umbilical cord within the limits of the norm. And it marks the welfare of neonates (7.20-7.45). The duration of hospitalization in Poland was shorter than in Germany. It was 3.8 days in the case when the median equalled 3. The number of days of preinduction cervical ripening and induction was similar in both countries. The levels of haemoglobin were comparable in both countries. The most common postpartum complications in Poland and Germany were first-degree perineal tears, episiotomies and anemia. Among the postpartum complications, cervical tears, revision of the uterine cavity, and episiotomy were significantly more common in Poland. The production of organic-mineral fertilizers from sewage sludge is one of the ecological options in their management. Though, pharmaceuticals and their derivatives, which accumulate in the sludge, could be a problem due to their impacts on the environment. This manuscript aimed at better understanding of risks posed by antimicrobial agents (AAs) in sludge-based fertilizers. Sewage sludge and sewage-based fertilizers (from two sewage treatment plants in two cities in Poland) were tested for 99 AAs. 26 AAs were detected in the sludge at concentrations reaching 112,000 μg/kg. Several AAs were successfully removed during the sludge treatment process (sulfasalazine, sulfapyridine, isoniazid, isonicotinic acid, erythromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin N-desmethyl, clarithromycin N-desmethyl, azithromycin N-desmethyl, emtricitabine, ANP) with reduction ranging from 34 % to 96,5 %. It is worth noting that penicillin V and ofloxacin/levofloxacin were recorded at higher concentrations in the fertilizer than in the sludge, which indicates the process of concentration of these AAs as a result of drying the fertilizer. Penicillin V content increased by 153 % and 191 % in WWTP 1 and WWTP 2 samples, respectively. The level of ofloxacin/levofloxacin increased by 70 % in fertilizer from WWTP 1, and decreased by 40 % in fertilizer from WWTP 2. The AAs leaching test revealed that 7 AAs (isoniazid, sulfapyridine, ofloxacin/levofloxacin, clindamycin, azithromycin, isonicotinic acid, pyrazinoic acid 5-hydroxy-) have potential to leach into the receiving soil environment after sludge-based fertilizer application. The risk factor (RQ) for sulfapyridine, ofloxacin/levofloxacin, isonicotinic acid and linezolid was too low to estimate, below 0.1, so the risk has mild environmental impacts. An RQ value of isoniazid and clindamycin ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 indicates a low risk to soil. Azithromycin RQ >36 denoted a high environmental risk. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have improved the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC), with the combination of nivolumab (NIVO) and ipilimumab (IPI) showing promising results. However, not all patients benefit from these therapies, emphasizing the need for reliable, easily assessable biomarkers. This multicenter study involved 116 advanced RCC patients treated with NIVO + IPI across nine oncology centers in Poland. Blood markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), eosinophils, and monocytes were assessed at baseline, after three months, and before disease progression (PD). The prognostic significance of these parameters was analyzed using linear regression, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, and Cox regression models. After a median follow-up of 11.8 months, the progression-free survival (PFS) was 12.8 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.7-28.1), while the overall survival (OS) was 27.3 months (95% CI 16-not reached). Patients with an NLR increase of ≥ 25% had a PFS of 8.2 (3.1-24.7) months compared to 17.5 (8.6-28.1) months in those with a rise in < 25% (p = 0.015). Similarly, a ≥ 25% increase in PLR was linked to a PFS of 6.8 (2.8-8.3) months compared to 17.4 (8.4-28.1) months (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis confirmed PLR as an independent predictor of PFS (HR 2.9, 95% CI 1.5-5.6, p = 0.001), while elevated eosinophil levels were associated with a reduced risk of death (HR 0.2, 95% CI 0.04-0.9, p = 0.05). No other analysis was statistically significant. Genetic diversity is crucial to secure the survival and sustainability of ecosystems. Given anthropogenic pressure, as well as the projected alterations connected with the level and circulation of water, riparian forests are of particular concern. In this paper, we assessed the genetic variation of black poplar - one of the keystone tree species of riverine forests. The natural habitats of black poplar have been severely transformed leading to a significant decline of its population size. Using a set of 18 nuclear microsatellites and geographic location data, we studied 26 remnant populations (1,261 trees) located along the biggest river valleys in Poland. Our main goal was to assess the overall genetic variation and to verify if range fragmentation and habitat transformation have disrupted gene exchange among populations. Genotyping revealed that 261 trees were clones. The level of clonality was higher in more transformed river sections. All populations have probably gone through a drastic genetic bottleneck in the distant past, and most of them have low effective population sizes. Still, the overall level of genetic variation remains high, but certain populations require attention due to their lower genetic variation, higher clonality and strong spatial genetic structure. Genetic differentiation was low, yet Bayesian clustering supported the existence of 11 genetic clusters. According to the results, gene exchange is most prevalent between adjacent populations. Relatively free gene flow occurs only along the Vistula, particularly in its middle section which is characterized by the highest genetic variation. Noticeable genetic structuring was observed along the Oder. Populations located at the range margin showed signs of genetic divergence and reduction of variation. We conclude that human activities have impacted the gene pool of black poplar in Poland by disrupting landscape connectivity and preventing the species from generative reproduction. The study provides practical guidelines on how to develop and implement the conservation program for the gene pool of black poplar in Poland. Background: Pharmacy internships are an important part of pharmacy education in Poland; they are an integral part of professional studies. The first two internships are held after the third and fourth year of study during the summer break and last for four weeks. The study aims to analyze the didactic process of the pharmacy students taking place during the summer internship in community and hospital pharmacies in Poland. The analysis emphasizes the acquisition of skills built on the master-student contact, and the results are based on trainees' feedback., Methods: The research tool was a questionnaire addressed to fifth-year pharmacy students who had previously completed summer internships in both community and hospital pharmacy. The survey contained 17 questions that sought to gain insight into their perceptions of the internship's supervision and guidance of work by tutors and pharmacy staff, involvement in different workplace routines and comparison between formal education and everyday practice. The data collection was carried out in the academic year 2015-2016 among the ninth-semester pharmacy students from four Medical Universities in Poland. Information about internships performed in community and hospital pharmacies were collected separately., Results: The paper presents the results of selected questions related specifically to the legitimacy of summer internships and learning about professional responsibilities. Altogether 447 questionnaires, evaluating summer internships in both community and hospital pharmacies were collected. For the majority of students the summer internship made them aware of the profession; however, the internship in some pharmacies did not always provide them with all aspects of pharmaceutical practice. 14-40% of students admitted that their mentors did not introduce the internship program at the beginning of the internship. Only 35-46% of students performed drug formulations on a daily basis. Less than 30% of respondents indicated that drug formulary process in community pharmacies was the same as they have learned at university. Almost every day or very often students were involved in checking or spreading out the drugs delivered to the pharmacy from the wholesale institution. Only two universities conducted regular audits of the internship process by the supervisors (academic teachers)., Conclusions: The summer internship of pharmacy students complements the opportunity to acquire practical skills in the training of future pharmacists. The quality of this didactic process should be subjected to constant verification. What is important is that pharmacists who are tutors of students participating in summer internships should obtain an academic support in the area of education and training, relevant to the professional preparation for the didactic process. Similar rules for summer internships should be developed, despite maintaining distinctiveness, across faculties. The students' responses indicate varying levels of mentor involvement in the implementation of practical vocational training. Background: Uncertain times require healthcare entities to demonstrate strong leadership, develop digitalisation, and respond to change in a creative and flexible manner. Based on emerging new institutional theory, we developed and tested a model of how digital transformational leadership (DTL) affects digital intensity (DI) among healthcare entities through the mediating role of organisational agility (OA). In this article, we also examine the moderating role of the country in the studied relationship., Methods: The study population consisted of 400 managers of primary healthcare entities from Poland and the Netherlands. Data was collected using a questionnaire method with a seven-point Likert scale. The gathered data was analysed using descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling (SEM). The analysis was performed using the statistical package SPSS with Andrew F. Hayes PROCESS macro and AMOS v. 29 (Predictive Solution, Poland)., Results: The results of structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed that DTL directly and indirectly affects DI, and OA mediates this relationship. Moreover, this indirect effect is moderated by a country., Conclusion: This study contributes to the development of DI and offers practical insights for managers of primary healthcare entities navigating the uncertainty and volatility of the post-pandemic market. &lt;b&gt;Introduction:&lt;/b&gt; Central venous thrombosis (CVT) represents a well-documented complication of acute otitis media (AOM) and acute mastoiditis (AM). Despite widespread antibiotic utilization, which has significantly reduced the incidence of severe AOM/AM complications, recent years have witnessed an increasing frequency of thrombotic complications in pediatric patients, not invariably presenting with classical neurological manifestations.&lt;b&gt;Aim:&lt;/b&gt; This study aimed to investigate the potential correlation between COVID-19 infection and increased CVT incidence, while sharing therapeutic experiences, given the absence of standardized treatment protocols for otogenic CVT in pediatric populations.&lt;b&gt;Materials and methods:&lt;/b&gt;A retrospective observational analysis was conducted on patients admitted to the Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Medical University of Warsaw for otogenic CVT between 2018 and 2023, with treatment completion by January 2024. The investigation encompassed the extent of thrombotic changes, concurrent complications, anticoagulation therapy modalities and duration, and therapeutic monitoring protocols.&lt;b&gt;Results:&lt;/b&gt; The study cohort comprised 13 patients, with complete follow-up data available for 11 subjects. Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) monotherapy achieved a 60% success rate (defined as complete recanalization), while combination anticoagulation therapy demonstrated a 16.67% success rate. Notably, all cases exhibited regression of active thrombosis, constituting a satisfactory therapeutic outcome.&lt;b&gt;Conclusions:&lt;/b&gt; Anticoagulation therapy demonstrated both efficacy and safety, with no significant hemorrhagic complications observed. These findings underscore the necessity for multicenter analysis to establish evidence-based clinical guidelines.

The epidemiological situation related to infectious diseases is influenced by many factors. To monitor actual trends in selected zoonoses, a total of 473 serum samples from farmers, forestry workers, and veterinarians were collected for serological examination. Anti- Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) antibodies were tested with ELISA and Western blot (WB) tests; the detection of anti- Toxoplasma gondii antibodies was performed using an enzyme linked fluorescence assay (ELFA). Antibodies to bartonellosis, anaplasmosis, and chlamydiosis were determined by indirect immunofluorescent test (IFA), whereas antibodies to yersiniosis and mycoplasmosis were confirmed in the ELISA test. Positive or borderline results of antibodies against B. burgdorferi s.l. in the ELISA test were detected in 33.8% of the study population. The borderline or positive ELISA test results for at least one antibody class were confirmed by WB in 58.7% of cases. The IgG antibodies against Anaplasma phagocytophilum , Toxoplasma gondii , and Mycoplasma pneumoniae were detected in 9.6%, 51.7%, and 63.6% of samples, respectively. Antibodies against Yersinia spp., Bartonella henselae , and Chlamydia pneumoniae were found to vary between 43 and 47%.

Honey contains natural biologically active compounds, and its preventive and healing properties are primarily linked to its antioxidant activity. The antioxidant properties of honey can be related to the botanical origin and content of phenolic compounds. We tested 84 honey samples from Poland, representing eight honey varieties: acacia, phacelia, buckwheat, linden, rapeseed, heather, goldenrod, and honeydew. High-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) was used to determine the phenolic compound composition of honey extracts. Total phenolic compounds (TPC) and DPPH radical-scavenging activity were also evaluated. We detected vanillin aldehyde, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, p- coumaric acid, and trans- ferulic acid, as well as flavonoid pinocembrin, in all honey varieties. The results of our study showed that honeys with high antioxidant activity were characterized by significantly higher total phenolic compounds content. Neither clustering method nor principal component analysis (PCA) showed clear separation of each honey variety, possibly due to high intra-variety diversities. We suppose that the variability of qualitative and quantitative phenolic compound composition within honey varieties may result from the region of origin, secondary nectar sources, and the time of harvest.

Tree-related Microhabitats (TreMs) are essential for sustaining forest biodiversity. Although TreMs represent ephemeral resources that are spread across the landscape, their spatial distribution within temperate forests remains poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a study on 90 sample plots (0.05 ha each) located in a primeval mountain European beech Fagus sylvatica-dominated forest (Bieszczady Mountains, Carpathians). We explored the TreM profile with its link to habitat characteristics and described the spatial distribution of TreM indices. We identified 61 TreM types, with a mean richness of 19.7 ± 4.9 SD TreM types per plot, a mean density of 740.7 ± 292.5 SD TreM-bearing trees ha -1 and a mean TreM diversity of 1.2 ± 0.1 SD. The diameter and living status of trees (living vs dead standing tree) were correlated with TreM richness on an individual tree. The stand structure, i.e. density and/or basal area of living and/or dead standing trees, and topographic conditions, i.e. slope exposure, were correlated with the TreM richness, density and diversity recorded on a study plot. We found no relationship between TreM richness, density and diversity and the presence of canopy gaps, which indicates that the influence of small-scale disturbances on the TreM profile is limited. However, our analysis revealed a clustered spatial pattern of TreM indices, with TreM-rich habitat patches (hot-spots) covering ~20 % of the forest. A moderate TreM richness, density and diversity dominated ~60 % of the forest, while TreM-poor habitat patches (cold-spots) covered ~20 %. Based on our findings, we advise the transfer of knowledge on the spatial distribution of TreMs from primeval to managed forests and advocate the '2:6:2' triad rule: to allocate 20 % of forests as strictly protected areas, to dedicate 60 % to low-intensity forest management with the retention of large living trees and all dead standing trees, and to use the remaining 20 % for intensive timber production. To ensure the continuance of the majority of TreM types, ≥55 living trees ha -1  >60 cm in diameter should be retained. The liverwort Arnellia fennica has a circumarctic distribution with disjunct and scarce localities in the Alps, Carpathians, and Pyrenees. Within the Carpathians, it is only known from the Tatra Mountains (in Poland), where so far only four occurrences have been documented in the forest belt of the limestone part of the Western Tatras. The species is considered a tertiary relict, which owes its survival during the last glaciation period to low-lying locations in areas not covered by ice. Previously, it has been demonstrated that this plant does not produce gemmae in the Tatra Mountains, nor does it reproduce sexually, hence it has not spread in this massif despite the high availability of potential habitats. These studies address the following questions: (1) why A. fennica, an arctic-alpine species, has only been found at low elevations in the Tatra Mountains so far, (2) what were the possibilities of its survival during the glaciation period as verified based on the latest paleoglaciological map, (3) how this species persists in the Tatras and why it remains a rare plant. As a result, nine additional new occurrences were found, bringing the total to 13 throughout the massif. Some of the sites were found in the high mountain area. For the first time, the production of gemmae in the Tatra population of A. fennica was observed and documented, along with the presence of male specimens of this dioecious species. Genetic studies have shown that individuals from all three groups of sites are genetically homogeneous, indicating a lack of sexual reproduction. The only way of dispersal for A. fennica in the Tatras is through propagule production. The uniqueness and specificity of these structures have been described, which differ significantly from the common model known in liverworts. The rarity of the species in the Tatra massif is attributed to the inefficient mode of vegetative reproduction and the absence of sexual reproduction. Paleoglaciological analysis of all montane sites (historical and new) of A. fennica showed that half were located in areas covered by glaciers. The hypothesis of this liverwort's survival during the glaciation period, at lower elevations, should be rejected. In this study, we utilized 2 H SNIF NMR and chemometric techniques to differentiate the botanical origin of raw materials used in vodka production in Poland, specifically focusing on plants with C 3 metabolism such as grain, potato, and sugar beet. Additionally, for the first time, mixtures of alcohols from different C 3 plants were analysed to detect adulteration. Our goal was to determine if it is possible to detect the addition of a different raw material in vodka made from a mixture of alcohols derived from C 3 plants. Significant isotopic differences were confirmed using analysis of variance and Tukey's tests. Linear relationships in grain-potato, grain-sugar beet, and beet-potato mixtures enabled composition determination. The detectability threshold for adulterants ranged from 10 % to 50 %, depending on the type of raw material. Linear IgA bullous dermatosis (LABD) is a rare subepidermal blistering disorder characterized by the presence of linear IgA deposits at the basement membrane zone (BMZ) by direct immunofluorescence (DIF). This entity was first described by Chorzelski and Jablonska from Warsaw Center of Bullous Diseases, Poland. The disease affects children and adults, whereby they differ in terms of clinical picture and course. Among polish patients with LABD mucous membrane involvement was exceptional, although, we reported a case presenting severe scarring of esophagus and conjunctivae with circulating IgG and IgA antibodies to LAD-1 antigen. Severe mucosal involvement was also observed in IgA-epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA). Immunologically, LABD is characterized by circulating IgA antibodies directed to several epitopes of antigen BP180: LAD-1, 97kD, NC16A. Other BMZ antigens, like BP230, laminin 332, type VII collagen or p200 may be affected. We as a first published a case of anti-p200kD pemphigoid mediated by IgA. Our immunoelectron microscopic studies showed that the epitopes recognized by LABD sera are ultrastructurally localized in the lamina lucida. The antigenic heterogeneity, low titer of IgA antibodies and the lack of commercially available tests for some antigens (LAD-1, p200kD) makes the diagnosis challenging in many cases. It is under debate whether these cases are the subtypes of LABD or they represent a separate entities (IgA-p200 pemphigoid, IgA-MMP or IgA-EBA). Since, they differ in terms of clinical course, mucosal involvement, coexisting disorders, response to the treatment and prognosis, their differentiation is mandatory. In the literature there are many cases with undetectable circulating IgA antibodies in whom LABD was recognized based on DIF only. To avoid misdiagnosis, more sophisticated methods should be used, like direct immunoeletron microscopy (IEM), which is a time-consuming technique. The alternative for IEM may be: a) analysis of the BMZ serration pattern, b) immunofluorescence mapping of blister, c) direct salt split (patient's) skin, d) fluorescence overlay antigen mapping by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Central Eastern European countries (CEEc) are characterized both by huge diversity in income inequality and, on average, by lower levels of well-being than in the other European Union (EU) countries. Given that income inequality may affect well-being negatively, the present study aims to explore the links between income inequalities and different dimensions of well-being in the eight CEEc, i.e. Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The analysis is conducted in the two groups of CEEc regarding low and high inequality in income distribution, namely CEE Continental group and CEE North group (corresponding to post-socialist corporatist and post-socialist liberal, respectively). The multidimensional concept of well-being is applied, enabling deep exploration of its links with income inequalities in the following dimensions: subjective well-being (happiness) and objective well-being (material, health, educational, and environmental dimensions). We estimate the vector autoregression (VAR) models based on annual data disaggregated into quarterly data covering 2004 to 2020. The bioaccumulation of pesticides in honeybee products (HBPs) should be studied for a number of reasons. The presence of pesticides in HBPs can provide new data on the risk related to the use of pesticides and their role in bee colony losses. Moreover, the degree of contamination of HBPs can lower their quality, weaken their beneficial properties, and, in consequence, may endanger human health. The aim of this study was to quantify a broad range of pesticide residues in three different HBPs-bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly. Samples were collected in the years 2017-2019 from the apiary in west-central Poland. Bee products were analyzed for the presence of over 550 pesticides using the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) method. Twenty-nine of the contaminants were quantified at least in one of the samples. Nine of them exceeded the maximum residue levels for honey. It should be noted that any dose of pesticides can cause a health hazard due to toxicity, since these substances may act synergistically. This current study revealed the high need for the pesticide monitoring of HBPs and proved that there is a need to expand the European Union Pesticides Database to include more HBPs.

The study assessed the sensitivity of 20 provenances of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) growing at provenance experimental trials located in lowland (Siemianice) and upland (Bliżyn) climate in Central Poland to air temperature and precipitation, including drought. The measure of the tree' sensitivity was their radial growth reactions, i.e. changes in the radial growth in years 1971-2015. We found that rainwater supplies in a soil stored in autumn of the previous year, length of the growing season and thermal conditions in its beginning, as well as thermal and moisture conditions of the year of tree ring formation had a significant impact on the wood volume formed by the larches, regardless of their origin and climatic region in which they grew. The degree of homogeneity of tree' radial growth reactions to precipitation deficit and high temperature was the lowest in a warmer and drier climate in the lowlands in Central Poland. Larch provenances with the lowest and the highest values of drought resilience components (resistance, recovery, resilience, relative resilience of radial growth) originated in different regions of Poland. Greater resistance to drought was observed in larch provenances growing at the trial located in the uplands. The relative resilience index seems to be the most helpful in predicting the future radial growth reactions of the studied provenances, and consequently their viability and survival, as this index showed the highest variability among trees of a given provenance and was most often significantly different between pairs of provenances., Competing Interests: Declarations. Background/objectives: Lyme disease (LD) is a major public health problem in Europe and the United States, with increasing incidence and not many prevention options. Vaccine hesitancy might be a significant barrier to successful vaccination campaigns having in mind previous vaccine development failures. This study aimed to evaluate the public's perception of LD vaccination in Poland, assess willingness to vaccinate, and identify factors influencing vaccination attitudes., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among parents of children hospitalized at the University Children's Hospital in Bialystok, Poland. The survey consisted of 29 questions regarding demographics, LD knowledge, vaccine attitudes, and perceived risks. Data were collected between January and December 2023 and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to identify predictors of respondents' positive vaccination attitudes., Results: A total of 503 valid responses were analyzed. Most respondents (72.4%) showed positive attitudes towards vaccination, while 18.5% were neutral and 9.1% were negative. Trust in health experts emerged as an important predictor of vaccination acceptance (OR 22.84; p < 0.001). More than 80% of participants recognized an LD vaccine as necessary, and 64.21% believed it would reduce their concerns about LD. Willingness to vaccinate was influenced by general positive vaccine attitudes, recognized danger of LD, and belief in the vaccine's ability to ease fears. Notably, 40.8% of respondents were uncertain about vaccine risks, with this group tending to be younger, less educated, and expressing lower trust in medical professionals., Conclusions: Public perception of LD in Poland indicates a high acceptance of a potential LD vaccine. Still, addressing vaccine hesitancy remains critical, particularly among undecided or neutral respondents. Building trust in healthcare professionals and addressing safety worries are important to increasing future LD vaccine use.

The European Commission authorized the use of dried yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor - TM) as a food ingredient under Regulation EU 2021/882. As TM emerges as an important allergen source, sensitization and allergy to TM in various populations need investigation. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of sensitization to TM before its introduction as a food ingredient in Poland, as well as checking the occurrence of co-sensitivity to TM and other invertebrate allergenic extracts and molecules. This analysis was performed using serum allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) results in 6,173 individuals using the ALEX2 test to detect sensitivity to TM and other related allergens. A total of 4.3% of the study population had sIgE to TM extract, with 0.7% of those individuals being mono-sensitized to TM. Sensitization to TM was most commonly associated with a positive response to house cricket and migratory locust allergens. sIgE antibodies against TM significantly more commonly (p < 0.001) co-occurred with sIgE against other invertebrate allergens. Patients with sIgE against TM were most likely sensitised to tropomyosins (49.1% of patients), Niemann-Pick C2 protein (43.8%), group 5/21 allergen (38.6%), class III chitinases (37.1%), and cysteine proteases (34.1%). Based on the serum asIgE levels to TM prior to this ingredient being introduced as a food in Poland, we hypothesised that this primary sensitization may be associated with invertebrate allergies. Our analysis showed that sensitisation to TM was most commonly associated with a positive reaction to house dust mites and shrimp tropomyosins. Therefore, we speculate that individuals allergic to shrimp should exercise caution when consuming foods containing TM., Competing Interests: Declarations. Tree species through aboveground biomass and roots are a key factors influencing the quality and quantity of soil organic matter. Our study aimed to determine the stability of soil organic matter in Luvisols under the influence of five different tree species. The study areas were located 25 km north of Krakow, in southern Poland. The study included five tree species - Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.), beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.). Forest stands growing in the same soil conditions (Luvisols) with similar geological material (loess) and grain size were selected for the study. We evaluated labile and heavy fractions of soil organic matter (SOM). Additionally, basic physicochemical properties (pH, carbon and nitrogen content, base cation content) were determined in soil samples. The results of our study showed that soils under the influence of coniferous species were characterized by a higher content of carbon of free light fraction (C fLF ) and carbon of occluded light fraction (C oLF ) compared to deciduous species. Similar relationships were found with the nitrogen content of the free light fraction (N fLF ) and nitrogen of occluded light fraction (N oLF ). Higher C MAF and N MAF contents were recorded in soils influenced by deciduous species. The carbon, nitrogen and base cations content positively correlated with the C and N of free light fraction and occluded light fraction. PCA analysis confirmed the connection of C and N of heavy fractions (C MAF and N MAF ) with deciduous species. Our research shows that avoiding single-species conifer stands and introducing admixtures of deciduous species, which increase SOM, is justified in forest management. Background: The patterns of inbreeding coefficients ( F IS ) and fine spatial genetic structure (FSGS) were evaluated regarding the mating system and inbreeding depression of food-deceptive orchids, Dactylorhiza majalis , Dactylorhiza incarnata var. incarnata , from NE Poland.Dactylorhiza fuchsii , from NE Poland., Methods: We used 455 individuals, representing nine populations of three taxa and AFLPs, to estimate percent polymorphic loci and Nei's gene diversity, which are calculated using the Bayesian method; F IS ; F ST ; FSGS with the pairwise kinship coefficient ( Fij ); and AMOVA in populations., Results: We detected a relatively high proportion of polymorphic fragments (40.4-68.4%) and Nei's gene diversity indices (0.140-0.234). The overall F IS was relatively low to moderate (0.071-0.312). The average F ij for the populations of three Dactylorhiza showed significantly positive values, which were observed between plants at distances of 1-10 m (20 m). F ST was significant in each Dactylorhiza taxon, ranging from the lowest values in D. fuchsii and D. majalis (0.080-0.086, p < 0.05) to a higher value (0.163, p < 0.05) in D. incarnata var. incarnata . Molecular variance was the highest within populations (76.5-86.6%; p < 0.001)., Conclusions: We observed concordant genetic diversity patterns in three food-deceptive, allogamous, pollinator-dependent, and self-compatible Dactylorhiza . F IS is often substantially higher than F ij with respect to the first class of FSGSs, suggesting that selfing (meaning of geitonogamy) is at least responsible for homozygosity. A strong FSGS may have evolutionary consequences in Dactylorhiza , and combined with low inbreeding depression, it may impact the establishment of inbred lines of D. majalis and D. incarnata var. incarnata .

Background: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a cholestatic, autoimmune liver disease with the presence of characteristic autoantibodies. The aim of the work was to determine the level of antibodies directed against bacterial antigens: Chlamydia pneumoniae (anti- Cpn), Yersinia enterolitica ( anti -Y.e ), Helicobacter pylori (anti- Hp ), Mycoplasma pneumoniae (anti- Mp. ) and Escherichia coli ( E.coli ) in sera of PBC patients. We also performed in vitro studies on the impact of the bacterial peptides on the specific antigen-antibody binding., Method: We screened 92 Polish PBC patients and sera samples from healthy donors and pathological controls. Autoantibodies and anti-bacterial antibodies were determined by commercially available ELISA kits. Specific inhibition of antibody binding was also detected by the in house ELISA method., Results: Anti- Cpn , anti- Y. enterolitica , anti- Hp , anti- M. pneumoniae and anti- E. coli antibodies were significantly more common in the group of PBC patients than in the pathological and healthy control groups: 74%, 40%, 84%, 39% and 69% respectively. The mean level of anti- Cpn , anti- Y.e , anti- Hp and anti- M.p in the PBC group was significantly higher than those in the healthy group ( p < 0.001). and in patients with other liver diseases. In sera of patients with the presence of positive anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA), specific for PBC, anti-bacterial antibodies have been found in 80% vs. 50% in sera with AMA negative. We observed inhibition of specific antigen-antibody binding by the bacterial peptide: EClpP ( E. coli caseinolytic protease) and adenine glycosylase from E. coli caseinolytic protease P, ClpP Y.e from peptide of Y. enterolitica , Mp PDC from M. pneumonia peptide and adenine glycosylase of E. coli . Background: Legless lizards, the slow worms of the genus Anguis, are forming secondary contact zones within their Europe-wide distribution., Methods: We examined 35 populations of A. fragilis and A. colchica to identify the level of morphological and genetic divergence in Poland. We applied a conventional study approach using metric, meristic, and categorial (coloration) features for a phenotype analysis, and two standard molecular markers, a mitochondrial (NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase chain 2; ND2 ) and a nuclear (V(D)J recombination-activating protein 1; RAG1 ) one., Results: We found clear differences between A. fragilis and A. colchica in molecular markers and phenotype-in meristic features, e.g., ear opening, number of scales rows around the body, and higher than so far known diversity in ND2 and RAG1 haplotypes. The presence of five hybrids was detected in three populations in the Polish part of the European contact zone. In all hybrids, homozygous alleles of RAG1 were detected, which suggests a back-crossing within the genus., Conclusions: The ability to produce fertile offspring by A. fragilis x A. colchica hybrids shows inefficient mechanisms of reproductive isolation of the two legless lizards. Background: Vaccination is one of the most effective ways of protecting individuals against serious infectious diseases and their fatal consequences., Objectives: The aim of this scoping review was to synthesize data on parental attitudes toward vaccination and identify factors influencing the motivators and barriers to children's vaccination based on Polish studies., Methods: The scoping review process and reporting were based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScRs) checklist. In the period between January 2014 and July 2024, the following databases were searched for publications: PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, Ebsco, and Scholar Google., Results: A total of 1531 potentially relevant records were reviewed, and 30 original publications from research samples collected in Poland were selected. According to the findings, vaccination rates varied between 100% and 70%, with parental acceptance levels for mandatory vaccination ranging from 99% to 65%. Parents most commonly cited the physician, the nurse, and the Internet as their primary sources of vaccination-related information. Moreover, parental primary motivators for vaccinating their children were prevention against infectious diseases, the opinion that vaccines are safe, and the belief that childhood vaccination is right and effective. The major barriers to vaccination were fear of vaccine side effects and the belief that vaccines are ineffective. Parents that were better educated, were of younger age, lived in cities, and had a higher income were much more likely to vaccinate their children., Conclusions: Understanding parental attitudes toward vaccination may help develop an educational program aimed at combating misinformation and increasing childhood vaccination coverage rates.

BACKGROUND Dietary supplements (DS) are increasingly popular worldwide, with 78% of Polish adults reporting their use, and nearly half using them regularly. The wide availability, selection, and affordability contribute to this prevalence. However, misinformation and potential health risks from incorrect usage highlight the importance of health literacy in making informed choices about DS. This study aims to assess the knowledge and practices related to dietary supplement use among Polish patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2024 on a representative sample of 1,074 Polish adults, excluding healthcare professionals, using the computer-assisted web interview method. The questionnaire assessed respondents' understanding of DS, sources of information, purchasing habits, and consultations with healthcare professionals. RESULTS Most respondents (71.79%) believed they understood what a dietary supplement is. Women and individuals with higher education were more likely to claim understanding (p=0.001, p<0.00001). The Internet was the most common information source (38.64%), followed by mass media and healthcare professionals. Women and older respondents more often consulted doctors and pharmacists (p=0.002, p=0.004). Brick-and-mortar pharmacies were the preferred purchasing location (61.64%), with men more likely to use online pharmacies (p=0.0002). CONCLUSIONS The study indicates high awareness of dietary supplements among Polish adults, with significant differences based on gender and education. Despite the Internet being a major information source, healthcare professionals remain crucial for informed decision-making. Efforts are needed to enhance public health literacy and ensure safe DS use.

With advancing age, progressive loss of muscle strength, as assessed by hand grip strength, may result in a poorer health-related quality of life. The aim of this study is to determine the associations of hand grip strength with quality of life among people aged 50-90 years from South West Poland. The study group comprised 1 446 people, including 351 men and 1 095 women, aged between 50 and 90 years. The WHOQoL-BREF questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. Hand grip strength of the dominant hand was measured. The general assessment of quality of life shows a significant relationship with hand grip strength. Two domains of quality of life: social and environmental also significantly differentiate hand grip strength. As the number of points in given domains increases, the hand grip strength increases. Among men, the relationship between the environmental domain and hand grip strength is significantly stronger compared to women. Hand grip strength is related to the quality of life among older adults, especially in the social and environmental domains. The results of our study suggest that measures need to be taken to improve the strength of skeletal muscles in adults, which might improve their quality of life., Competing Interests: Declarations. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused psychological distress to the population and healthcare workers. Physicians' well-being is essential and contributes significantly to overall health. This study aimed to assess the strain on Polish general practitioners from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and to ascertain the potential predictors of their distress., Methods: Data was collected using a self-reported online questionnaire from 162 GPs in Poland between December 2020 and August 2021 as part of the international PRICOV-19 study. General practitioners' well-being was evaluated using the validated Mayo Clinic's expanded 9-item well-being index (eWBI). Spearman's correlation was used to measure the strength and direction of association between general practitioners' distress level and continuous variables, and for ordinal variables, Gamma correlation was recommended for many tide ranks. We also checked the association of the level of distress with continuous variables by categorizing them and applying the Kruskal-Wallis test likewise for a comparison of the distress in different practice locations., Results: A vast majority (80%) of respondents were considered at risk of distress during the COVID-19 outbreak, with an eWBI score of 2 or more. Higher distress scores were exhibited among general practitioners who reported increased responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and perceived need for additional training. The experience of collaboration with neighbouring practices and the provision of adequate governmental support emerged as significant protective factors against distress. No correlation was observed between Polish general practitioners' distress level and years of professional experience, number of patients in the practice, number of doctors working there, the practice's location, or working with more vulnerable patient populations., Conclusions: Our findings proved that COVID-19 placed an extraordinary emotional burden on Polish general practitioners and highlighted the importance of targeted support services and resource allocation to primary healthcare in Poland in case of any potential future crisis similar to the COVID-19 pandemic., Competing Interests: Declarations. This study assessed the geogenic radon potential using PECAME, an innovative tool designed to simultaneously measure soil-gas permeability and CO 2 concentration - two key parameters for understanding radon transport in soil. Comparative field studies using the RADON-JOK device in various geological settings in Japan and Poland demonstrate the effectiveness of PECAME. These studies reveal a strong correlation between PECAME and RADON-JOK, with an R 2 value of 0.94 for flow rate of 3.5 dm 3 min - 1 . Since the soil-gas Rn concentration and permeability were measured simultaneously, the geogenic radon potential was calculated. Most measured points fall within the low to medium radon index zones, with two exceptions near active faults located in the high zone. Therefore, permeability and CO 2 measurements using PECAME may facilitate further research in Japan to develop a comprehensive geogenic radon potential map., Competing Interests: Declarations. People from the LGBT+ community often face unique healthcare disparities, including barriers to accessing appropriate and respectful care. The purpose of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the Polish-language version of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT- DOCSS-PL). Before testing its psychometric properties, the LGBT-DOCSS was translated and adapted from the original English version into Polish. Subsequently, we tested the instrument's psychometric properties on a sample of 415 participants. In addition, internal consistency of the questionnaire was checked with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Cronbach's alpha together with discriminative power index were uses as internal consistency measures. There were more female than male participants (58%). More than 57% of the participants were heterosexual and the average age of the respondents was approximately 30 years. The internal consistency of the Polish version and its domains was strong with an overall Cronbach's alpha of 0.789. The alpha ranges for each subscale domains were between 0.780-0.824. The McDonald's omega coefficient was 0.86. The Polish version of the LGBT-DOCSS-PL has good properties of factorial validity.

Objectives: We need to better understand how the menstrual cycle interacts with other biological systems, such the inflammation and immune response. One way to study this interaction is through C-reactive protein (CRP). Studies of CRP concentrations across the menstrual cycle have been inconsistent. This study explores menstrual cycle CRP variation in two geographically different samples of Polish and Polish American individuals., Methods: Analyses were conducted on 76 Polish and 22 Polish American daily urine samples collected on the first day of menstruation until the start of their next period. CRP, estrone-3-glucuronide, and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide were assayed. Sample-specific linear mixed models were used to examine cycle effects and median CRP concentrations across cycle phases and between the start of menses and remainder of the cycle were compared using Kruskal-Wallace and Dunn tests., Results: Polish and Polish American samples had distinct menstrual cycle CRP phenotypes. The Polish sample did not show cycle effects. The Polish American LMM demonstrated that CRP decreases after the first 3 days of menses (estimate -0.17, t-value -5.2). The KW and Dunn tests supported this. CRP concentrations were higher during the early follicular (median 0.406, p < 0.05), specifically the first 3 days of menstruation (median 0.466, p < 0.01), and lower in the luteal (median 0.277, p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Results suggest that changes in CRP during menstrual cycle are not universal across populations. In October and December 2024, circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was detected from two wastewater samples in Poland during routine environmental surveillance. The first isolate was characterised and matched previous cVDPV2 isolates detected in Spain in September, as well as in Germany, Finland, and the United Kingdom in November and December 2024. In response to the event, active surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) has been strengthened, and the frequency of environmental sample collection has been increased.

In 2024, circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was detected in wastewater samples in Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom (UK). All strains were genetically linked, but sequence analysis showed high genetic diversity among the strains identified within individual wastewater sites and countries and an unexpected high genetic proximity among isolates from different countries. Taken together these results, with sequential samples having tested positive in various sites, a broader geographic distribution beyond positive sampling sites must be considered.

Background: The 2022 invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation triggered a refugee crisis, affecting the multidrug-/rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB) prevalence in neighbouring countries. This study examines the epidemiological trends and characteristics of MDR/RR-TB patients in Poland, focusing on the relative contribution of Ukrainian refugees., Methods: Data from the Polish National Tuberculosis Registry and EPIC Project database, covering MDR/RR-TB cases reported between 2010 and Q1 2024, were analysed., Results: The study included 794 MDR/RR-TB cases, showing a demographic shift post-2022. During the 10-year period up to 2021, a median of 48 MDR/RR-TB cases were reported annually in Poland. After 2022, these numbers doubled: 104 cases were reported in 2022 and 101 cases in 2023. Simultaneously, the number of Ukrainian MDR/RR-TB patients increased from 77 (13%) during 2010-2021 to 127 (58%) from 2022 to Q1 2024., Conclusion: Poland is observing an increased number of cases of MDR/RR-TB associated with the large number of displaced Ukrainian citizens who are now residing in Poland. Background: The medical community has shown a growing interest in developing methods for measuring and comparing objective patient outcomes coupled with subjective patient assessments. Questionnaires enable healthcare professionals to obtain the patient's perspective about their experienced vestibular schwannomas (VS) symptoms quickly. To date, in Poland, a cross-cultural adapted version of a disease-specific questionnaire for the measurement of quality of life (QoL) in patients with VS has not been produced., Objectives: This study aimed to adapt the questionnaire evaluating disease-specific QoL in patients with VS (Penn Acoustic Neuroma Quality-of-Life Scale; PANQOL) to Polish and evaluate its psychometric properties., Material and Methods: One-hundred twenty-four patients aged between 24 and 85 years (mean (M) = 60.17 ±standard deviation (SD) = 13.27) diagnosed with VS and treated with Gamma Knife were included in the study. We used a questionnaire translated from English into Polish by a bilingual professional, verified through a back-translation. The final version consisted of 26 items. The internal consistency of the Polish version of the PANQOL scale domains was measured using the Cronbach's alpha (α). To verify the validity of PANQOL subscales, a correlation analysis was conducted between the domains of PANQOL and other questionnaires, including the Assessment of Quality of Life (AQoL-8D), the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI), the 5 Well-Being Index (WHO-5), the Skarzynski Tinnitus Scale (STS) for the presence of dizziness, and the Gardner-Robertson classes., Results: The majority of PANQOL domains showed excellent or good internal consistency (for a PANQOL total of 0.934; for subscales in the range of 0.916-0.424). Our analysis showed strong correlations between the total PANQOL score and AQoL-8D utility score, as well as between the subscales. We observed weak to moderately significant relationships between GBI and PANQOL domains (r = 0.18-0.43), the WHO-5 (r = 0.18-0.56) and the STS scale (r = -0.40- -0.19)., Conclusions: The results demonstrated that the POL-PANQOL is a reliable and valid questionnaire for measuring QoL.

The European Bison (Bison bonasus) is the largest mammal in Europe and is classified as an endangered species. Leishmaniosis is a vector-borne disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum. In general, this infection has been associated with dogs, cats, and humans. However, epidemiologic studies and reports confirm that the parasite is able to infect many other mammalian species. Recent evidence has demonstrated that ruminants in endemic areas are exposed to L. infantum infection. Moreover, climate change has allowed the northward spread of vector species, causing the expansion of L. infantum infection in regions traditionally classified as nonendemic in Europe. The aim of this study was to determine the presence or absence of anti-L. infantum antibodies in serum samples from 343 European bison in Poland, collected from 2017 to 2023. For this purpose, the presence of anti-Leishmania antibodies was analyzed using an in-house multispecies ELISA. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were detected in four animals, an overall seroprevalence of 1.17%. Introduction: Childbearing and childrearing challenge parents' physical, social and emotional capacities. Childbearing motivations and desires are indicators of person's psychological readiness to meet these challenges and to establish a healthy bond with the child. Yet, much uncertainty still exists on how childbearing motivations and desires develop in the life course and to what extent early experiences in the family of origin contribute to their development., Objective: The overall goal of the present study was to understand the relationship between early caregiving responsibilities (i.e. childhood parentification) in the family of origin and childbearing motivations and the desire to have a first child., Methods: In the cross-sectional design study, childless Polish adults ( N  = 384; 20-35 years old) completed a set of self-report measures. Different dimensions of parentification experienced in childhood were measured retrospectively using the Parentification Inventory, and childbearing-related variables were assessed using the Childbearing Questionnaire. Data were analysed using mediation analyses., Results: We found that past experiences of parent- and sibling-oriented parentification were positively associated with the desire to have a child, and these relationships were fully mediated by positive childbearing motivation. Further, our results showed that satisfaction with childhood caregiving responsibilities positively predicted childbearing desire, and this effect was partially mediated by positive and negative childbearing motivation., Conclusion: Individuals' early caring activities, especially when they evoke feelings of satisfaction and appreciation in the child, may play an important role in shaping childbearing motivations and desires that underlie their future reproductive behaviours.

In deeply Catholic Poland, domestic violence (DV) is often denied, downplayed, or justified, hindering its recognition as a pressing societal issue. This study addresses the scarcity of research on the experiences and recovery of Polish women from DV. Through feminist interviews with 13 women in Norway and Poland who survived DV, our findings reveal a complex entanglement of embodied experiences with history, religion, society, and gender hierarchies during their recovery processes. This article considers aspects of a development aid that provides medical support to strengthen pediatric orthopedics in Rwanda. We present part of the Afriquia foundation work, a nonprofit foundation from Poland involved in supporting the medical sector in Rwanda as a sign of global solidarity and the human right to health. The main foundation's activity is the treatment of orthopedic problems among Rwandan citizens. We present a case study of two children under the care of the Afiquia foundation. 11-year-old Seraphine treated due to the consequences of right tibia osteomyelitis and 11-year-old Lavi suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta. Both children were treated surgically in Poland due to Rwanda's lack of treatment possibilities. After the applied treatment, Seraphine walks correctly without crutches and can attend school and thrive among her peers. Lavi has not sustained any fragility fracture since the surgery in Poland. He is healthy and constantly ongoing his rehabilitation including gait training. The described cases initiated development aid in Rwanda, supplying hospitals with orthopedic implants and training medical staff. The growing number of humanitarian crises across the globe and the people affected requires increasing organizations involved in providing relief. The Polish Institute for Brain Research was established in Warsaw in 1928 to support scientific research on the brain and its functions. The director of the institute was Maksymilian Rose (1883-1937), a distinguished Polish neurologist and neuroanatomist, a disciple of Oskar Vogt and Korbinian Brodmann. In 1931, the Institute was moved from Warsaw to Vilnius. The Institute was well-known in Europe at the time because of the research in the fields of neuroscience, clinical neurology, and psychiatry, as well as the cytoarchitectonic analysis of social activists' brains-a fashionable, neophrenological way to link the mental functions of deceased geniuses with the cellular composition of their central nervous systems. In 1939, the work of the Institute was interrupted by World War II; some of the preparations and materials were moved from Vilnius to Warsaw, some were stored in Vilnius, and some were lost. In this article, we analyze the primary and secondary sources, some of which were obscure for over 80 years, and evaluate the most important scientific achievements of the Polish Institute for Brain Research, as well as its legacy in the early period of modern neuroscience and neurology in interwar Vilnius.

Background: Ageism is one of the common forms of discrimination and prejudice. It has also been shown to be present in health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and medical students., Aims: The aim of this study was to translate the Ageism Scale For Dental Students (ASDS) into Polish, perform a culture adaptation, and conduct a preliminary validation analysis., Methods: The survey was administered to 202 third-, fourth-, and fifth-year students at the Jagiellonian University (No. 1072.6120.283.2020). Data were analyzed using principal components analysis (PCA) with an oblique, Promax rotation, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Cronbach's alpha (α) was calculated to check the internal consistency reliability. Discriminant validity was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis test., Results: PCA produced a 10-item scale distributed into three factors, which explains 59.52% of the total variance. Factor 1 ("preconceived notions about dental treatment") contained four items (α = 0.703), Factor 2 ("cost-benefit of providing care for older patients")-four items (α = 0.660) and Factor 3 ("dentist-older patient interaction")-two items (α = 0.662). CFA confirmed that the model is a good fit (RMSE = 0.058, 90% CI from 0.014 to 0.092, CFI = 0.950, and TLI = 0.926).
