Spain was invaded in 711 CE by mostly Berber North Africans carrying Muslim religion to a mostly Christian/Catholic Kingdom. A fight to expel Muslims soon started and were apparently driven out of Iberia (Spain) starting in 1492 CE. However, many of these expelled people were of Iberian old ancestry that had become Muslims at Las Alpujarras Mts. (South-East Spain). Also, Muslim North Africans converted to Christianity either remained there or came back after they more definetively were expelled by 1609 CE. Las Alpujarras region was also repopulated by northern Spaniards mostly from Galicia. Our HLA study of present day Alpujarrans shows that typical North Spain and European Atlantic façade HLA extended haplotypes are very frequent in nowadays Las Alpujarras region, i. e.: HLA-(A*29-B*44)-DRB1*07:01-DQA1*02:01-DQB1*02:01 and (A*02-B*27)-DRB1*15:01-DQA1*01:02-DQB1*06:02. We present a new Bayesian inference method for compartmental models that takes into account the intrinsic stochasticity of the process. We show how to formulate a SIR-type Markov jump process as the solution of a stochastic differential equation with respect to a Poisson Random Measure (PRM), and how to simulate the process trajectory deterministically from a parameter value and a PRM realization. This forms the basis of our Data Augmented MCMC, which consists of augmenting parameter space with the unobserved PRM value. The resulting simple Metropolis-Hastings sampler acts as an efficient simulation-based inference method, that can easily be transferred from model to model. Compared with a recent Data Augmentation method based on Gibbs sampling of individual infection histories, PRM-augmented MCMC scales much better with epidemic size and is far more flexible. It is also found to be competitive with Particle MCMC for moderate epidemics when using approximate simulations. PRM-augmented MCMC also yields a posteriori estimates of the PRM, that represent process stochasticity, and which can be used to validate the model. A pattern of deviation from the PRM prior distribution will indicate that the model underfits the data and help to understand the cause. We illustrate this by fitting a non-seasonal model to some simulated seasonal case count data. Applied to the Zika epidemic of 2013 in French Polynesia, our approach shows that a simple SEIR model cannot correctly reproduce both the initial sharp increase in the number of cases as well as the final proportion of seropositive. Introduction. Biological adhesives and effective topical therapeutic agents that improve wound healing are urgently required for the treatment of chronic ulcers. A biodegradable adhesive based on a carbohydrate polymer with zinc oxide (CPZO) was shown to possess anti-inflammatory activity and enhance wound healing, but its bactericidal activity was unknown. Aim. To investigate the bactericidal activity of CPZO against bacteria commonly present as infectious agents in chronic wounds. Methodology. We examined the bactericidal activity of CPZO against three biofilm-producing bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ) through three strategies: bacterial suspension, biofilm disruption and in vitro wound biofilm model. Results. In suspension cultures, CPZO had direct, potent bactericidal action against S. aureus within 24 h, whereas E. coli took 7 days to be eliminated. By contrast, P. aeruginosa survived up to 14 days with CPZO. CPZO had biofilm disruption activity against clinical isolates of S. aureus in the anti-biofilm test. Finally, in the in vitro wound biofilm model, CPZO dramatically reduced the bacterial viability of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa . Conclusions. Together with its previously shown anti-inflammatory properties, the bactericidal activity of CPZO gives it the potential to be a first-line therapeutic option for chronic various ulcers and, possibly, other chronic ulcers, preventing or controlling microbial infections, and leading to the healing of such complicated chronic ulcers.

Underactuation is widely used when designing anthropomorphic hand, which involves fewer degrees of actuation than degrees of freedom. However, the similarities between coordinated joint movements and movement variances across different grasp tasks have not been suitably examined. This work suggests a systematic approach to identify the actuation strategy with the minimum number for degrees of actuation for anthropomorphic hands. This work evaluates the correlations of coordinated movements in human hands during 23 grasp tasks to suggest actuation strategies for anthropomorphic hands. Our approach proceeds as follows: first, we find the best description for each coordinated joint movement in each grasp task by using multiple linear regression; then, based on the similarities between joint movements, we classify hand joints into groups by using hierarchical cluster analysis; finally, we reduce the dimensionality of each group of joints by employing principal components analysis. The metacarpophalangeal joints and proximal interphalangeal joints have the best and most consistent description of their coordinated movements across all grasp tasks. The thumb metacarpophalangeal and abduction/adduction between the ring and little fingers exhibit relatively high independence of movement. The distal interphalangeal joints show a high degree of independent movement but not for all grasp tasks. Analysis of the results indicates that for the distal interphalangeal joints, their coordinated movements are better explained when all fingers wrap around the object. Our approach fails to provide more information for the other joints. We conclude that 19 degrees of freedom for an anthropomorphic hand can be reduced to 13 degrees of actuation distributed between six groups of joints. The number of degrees of actuation can be further reduced to six by relaxing the dimensionality reduction criteria. Other resolutions are as follows: (a) the joint coupling scheme should be joint-based rather than finger-based and (b) hand designs may need to include finger abduction/adduction movements.

Background and Aims: Anastomotic leaks (AL) continue to be a devastating complication after colorectal surgery. The purpose of this experimental study was to confirm if Pebisut® applied to intestinal suture lines increases tensile strength in the critical days of healing and to evaluate its anti-inflammatory properties., Methods: Bursting pressures and histological evaluation of suture lines in dogs were performed, comparing the burst strength with collagen or fatty tissue patches with/without Pebisut® (patent granted in the USPTO 8,252.333, 26.01.2006, in the European Union 2,062,602, 01.12.2010, in Canada 2,661,686, 21.08.2007 and in Mexico P.C.T./MX/a/2009/001737)., Results: Pebisut® significantly increases burst strength in suture lines in long-term procedures with both collagen and fat pad patches. The adhesive penetrates rapidly into the suture lines, sealing them and progressing towards the intestinal lumen, disappearing in 14-20 days. It was well tolerated without any evidence of "foreign body" reaction., Conclusions: Application of the biodegradable adhesive Pebisut® is easy, well tolerated by mammalian tissues and consistently increases the burst strength of suture lines. Therefore, it may provide more tensile strength in anastomosis and help protect AL, one of the most serious complications in gastrointestinal surgery. If this experimental finding could be translated to clinical surgery, the protection of colorectal anastomosis could be beneficial to patients. Background and Aims: Anastomotic leaks continue to be a devastating complication for patients and surgeons worldwide. The few surgical adhesives available to date have not achieved the desired clinical results. The purpose of this experimental study was to determine if Pebisut® applied to intestinal suture lines provides increased resistance and protection during the critical days of healing., Methods: Intestinal lesions were caused in rats and dogs and a new biodegradable adhesive (Pebisut®) (patent granted in the European Union 07808494.4-1219, 01.12.2010, in Mexico P.C.T./MX/a/2009/001737, 16.02.2009, pending in the U.S.P.T.O. 60/762,136, 26.01.2006) was applied to compare the resistance of suture lines using bursting pressures and histologically., Results: Under acute and chronic conditions, Pebisut® strengthened and made the suture lines more resistant, while histologically penetrating and sealing them. The adhesive disappears within 2-3 weeks and is well tolerated by the intestinal tissues., Conclusions: This biodegradable adhesive provides greater resistance, temporarily protects suture lines and may prevent anastomotic leaks., (Copyright © 2011 IMSS. Background: The question of whether symbolically mediated behavior is exclusive to modern humans or shared with anatomically archaic populations such as the Neandertals is hotly debated. At the Grotte du Renne, Arcy-sur-Cure, France, the Châtelperronian levels contain Neandertal remains and large numbers of personal ornaments, decorated bone tools and colorants, but it has been suggested that this association reflects intrusion of the symbolic artifacts from the overlying Protoaurignacian and/or of the Neandertal remains from the underlying Mousterian., Methodology/principal Findings: We tested these hypotheses against the horizontal and vertical distributions of the various categories of diagnostic finds and statistically assessed the probability that the Châtelperronian levels are of mixed composition. Our results reject that the associations result from large or small scale, localized or generalized post-depositional displacement, and they imply that incomplete sample decontamination is the parsimonious explanation for the stratigraphic anomalies seen in the radiocarbon dating of the sequence., Conclusions/significance: The symbolic artifacts in the Châtelperronian of the Grotte du Renne are indeed Neandertal material culture.

Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta signalling plays important roles in regulating lung development. However, the specific regulatory functions of TGF-beta signalling in developing lung epithelial versus mesenchymal cells are still unknown. By immunostaining, the expression pattern of the TGF-beta type II receptor (TbetaRII) was first determined in the developing mouse lung. The functions of TbetaRII in developing lung were then determined by conditionally knocking out TbetaRII in the lung epithelium of floxed-TbetaRII/surfactant protein C-reverse tetracycline transactivator/TetO-Cre mice versus mesenchyme of floxed-TbetaRII/Dermo1-Cre mice. TbetaRII was expressed only in distal airway epithelium at early gestation (embryonic day (E)11.5), but in both airway epithelium and mesenchyme from mid-gestation (E14.5) to post-natal day 14. Abrogation of TbetaRII in mouse lung epithelium resulted in retardation of post-natal lung alveolarisation, with markedly decreased type I alveolar epithelial cells, while no abnormality in prenatal lung development was observed. In contrast, blockade of TbetaRII in mesoderm-derived tissues, including lung mesenchyme, resulted in mildly abnormal lung branching and reduced cell proliferation after mid-gestation, accompanied by multiple defects in other organs, including diaphragmatic hernia. The primary lung branching defect was verified in embryonic lung explant culture. The novel findings of the present study suggest that transforming growth factor-beta type II receptor-mediated transforming growth factor-beta signalling plays distinct roles in lung epithelium versus mesenchyme to differentially control specific stages of lung development.

The gene profile of Arabic-speaking Moroccans has been compared with those of other Mediterranean populations in order to provide additional information about the history of their origins. Our HLA data suggest that most Moroccans are of a Berber (Imazighen) origin and that Arabs who invaded North Africa and Spain in the 7th century A.D. did not substantially contributed to the gene pool; however, they imposed their advanced culture and their religion. Present-day Egyptians are also related to Moroccan Berbers and this supports an ancient Saharan origin for part of the present-day Mediterraneans, particularly for the Arabic-speaking ones (also Algerians) and also for the older substratum of Mediterranean people.

Background/aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether there are specific prognostic factors to predict the development of secondary pancreatic infection (SPI) in severe acute pancreatitis in order to perform a computed tomography-fine needle aspiration with bacteriological sampling at the right moment and confirm the diagnosis., Methods: Twenty-five clinical and laboratory parameters were determined sequentially in 150 patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) and univariate, and multivariate regression analyses were done looking for correlation with the development of SPI., Results: Only APACHE II score and C-reactive protein levels were related to the development of SPI in the multivariate analysis. A regression equation was designed using these two parameters, and empiric cut-off points defined the subgroup of patients at high risk of developing secondary pancreatic infection., Conclusion: The results showed that it is possible to predict SPI during SAP allowing bacteriological confirmation and early treatment of this severe condition.

Background: In the present study the year experience of a multidisciplinary team (oncologic, unit for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and surgery) with the use of a new method of central intravenous administration of medication such as that of subcutaneous venous reservoirs (SVR) is reviewed., Methods: The subcutaneous injection capsules were implanted as a venous access in 150 surgical procedures in 146 patients from October 1985 to April 1991 with a total follow up of 29.190 days and a mean length of 251 days for SVR. Sixty-two percent (94 implantations) of the SVR were implanted in the out patient clinic, 20% (30 patients) were admitted for placement of the reservoir although this was only indicated in the first two years of the series, 13% (20 patients) during hospitalization for the base disease and only 4% (6 patients) were specifically admitted for surgical preparation (plasma, platelets, and others). SVR were used for chemotherapy (124 cases, 82%), repeated transfusions (6 cases, 4%) and chronic medication (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, infections) (30 patients, 20%). Forty-two percent permitted chemotherapy administration by continual transfusion on an out patient regime., Results: A series of mechanical complications (3 cases, 2%), septic (9 episodes in 7 patients, 5%) and thrombotic (8 of the catheter) (5%) and 4 of the central veins (2%) were observed. In the present series the rate of infections (5%) (0.072 episodes of bacteremia per 100 days/patient) and thrombosis (3%) was very low due to a strict protocol of maintenance and control by the medical team and hospital staff. The need for radiologic control during surgery is emphasized although, as demonstrated in the present review, the technique of localization by a cath-finder (external detector) permits greater speed with the same security., Conclusions: The degree of patient satisfaction and the minimum incidence of serious complications in determined risk groups (neutropenia, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) demonstrates that subcutaneous venous reservoirs (SVR) constitute an excellent method as a chronic venous access. The SVR present a lower rate of complications if compared with any historic series of external vascular catheterization.
