Time-resolved spectroscopic and electron-ion coincidence techniques are essential to study dynamic processes in materials or chemical compounds. For this type of analysis, it is necessary to have detectors capable of providing, in addition to image-related information, the time of arrival for each individual detected particle ("x, y, time"). The electronics capable of handling such sensors must meet requirements achievable only with time-to-digital converters (TDC) with a resolution on the order of tens of picoseconds and the use of a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to manage data acquisition and transmission. This study introduces the design and implementation of an innovative TDC based on two FPGAs working symbiotically with different tasks: the first (AMD/Xilinx Artix ® 7) directly implements a TDC, aiming for a temporal precision of 12 picoseconds, while the second (Intel Cyclone ® 10) manages the acquisition and connectivity with the external world. The TDC has been optimized to operate on eight channels (+ sync) simultaneously but is potentially extendable to a greater number of channels, making it particularly suitable for coincidence measurements where it is necessary to temporally correlate multiple pieces of information from various measurement systems.

Light is a versatile tool to remotely activate molecules adsorbed on a surface, for example, to trigger their polymerization. Here, we explore the spatial distribution of light-induced chemical reactions on a Au(111) surface. Specifically, the covalent on-surface polymerization of an anthracene derivative in the submonolayer coverage range is studied. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we observe a substantial increase of the local molecular coverage with the sample illumination time at the center of the laser spot. We find that the interplay between thermally induced diffusion and the reduced mobility of reaction products steers the accumulation of material. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) few-layer films have gained considerable attention for their possible applications in electronics and optics and also as a promising material for energy conversion and storage. Intercalating alkali metals, such as lithium, offers the opportunity to engineer the electronic properties of MoS 2 . However, the influence of lithium on the growth of MoS 2 layers has not been fully explored. Here, we have studied how lithium affects the structural and optical properties of the MoS 2 few-layer films prepared using a new method based on one-zone sulfurization with Li 2 S as a source of lithium. This method enables incorporation of Li into octahedral and tetrahedral sites of the already prepared MoS 2 films or during MoS 2 formation. Our results discover an important effect of lithium promoting the epitaxial growth and horizontal alignment of the films. Moreover, we have observed a vertical-to-horizontal reorientation in vertically aligned MoS 2 films upon lithiation. One of the fundamental applications for monolayer-thick 2D materials is their use as protective layers of metal surfaces and in situ intercalated reactive materials in ambient conditions. Here we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties, as well as the chemical stability in air of a very reactive metal, Europium, after intercalation between a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layer and a Pt substrate. We demonstrate that Eu intercalation leads to a hBN-covered ferromagnetic EuPt 2 surface alloy with divalent Eu 2+ atoms at the interface. We expose the system to ambient conditions and find a partial conservation of the di-valent signal and hence the Eu-Pt interface. The use of a curved Pt substrate allows us to explore the changes in the Eu valence state and the ambient pressure protection at different substrate planes. The interfacial EuPt 2 surface alloy formation remains the same, but the resistance of the protecting hBN layer to ambient conditions is reduced, likely due to a rougher surface and a more discontinuous hBN coating.

Ferromagnetic insulators (FM-Is) are the materials of interest for the new generation quantum electronic applications. Here, we have investigated the physical observables depicting FM-I ground states in epitaxial Sm 2 NiMnO 6 (SNMO) double perovskite thin films fabricated under different conditions to realize the different level of Ni/Mn anti-site disorders (ASDs). The presence of ASDs immensely influence the characteristic magnetic and anisotropy behaviors in SNMO system by introducing short scale antiferromagnetic interactions in predominant long range FM ordered host matrix. Charge disproportion between cation sites, in the form of Ni 2+ + Mn 4+ → Ni 3+ + Mn 3+ , causes mixed valency in both Ni and Mn species, which is found insensitive to ASD concentrations. Temperature dependent photo emission, photo absorption measurements duly combined with cluster model configuration interaction simulations, suggest that the eigenstates of Ni and Mn cations can be satisfactorily described as a linear combination of the unscreened d n and screeneddn+1L̲(L̲: O 2 p hole) states. The electronic structure across the Fermi level ( E F ) exhibits closely spaced Ni 3 d , Mn 3 d and O 2 p states. From occupied and unoccupied bands, estimated values of the Coulomb repulsion energy ( U ) and ligand to metal charge transfer energy (Δ), indicate charge transfer insulating nature, where remarkable modification in Ni/Mn 3 d spectral features, whereas the spectral positions are found to be unaltered. Hereby, present work demonstrates SNMO thin film as a FM-I system, where the FM state can be tuned by manipulating ASD in the crystal structure, while the I state remains intact.p hybridization takes place across the FM transition temperature. Existence of ASD broadens the Ni, Mn 3 d spectral features, whereas the spectral positions are found to be unaltered. The intrinsic stability of the 5 V LiCoPO 4 -LiCo 2 P 3 O 10 thin-film (carbon-free) cathode material coated with MoO 3 thin layer is studied using a comprehensive synchrotron electron spectroscopy in situ approach combined with first-principle calculations. The atomic-molecular level study demonstrates fully reversible electronic properties of the cathode after the first electrochemical cycle. The polyanionic oxide is not involved in chemical reactions with the fluoroethylene-containing liquid electrolyte even when charged to 5.1 V vs Li + /Li. The high stability of the cathode is explained on the basis of the developed energy level model. In contrast, the chemical composition of the cathode-electrolyte interface evolves continuously by involving MoO 3 in the decomposition reaction with consequent leaching of oxide from the surface. The proposed mechanisms of chemical reactions are attributed to external electrolyte oxidation via charge transfer from the relevant electron level to the MoO 3 valence band state and internal electrolyte oxidation via proton transfer to the solvents. This study provides a deeper insight into the development of both a doping strategy to enhance the electronic conductivity of high-voltage cathode materials and an efficient surface coating against unfavorable interfacial chemical reactions.

On-surface polymerization is a powerful bottom-up approach that allows for the growth of covalent architectures with defined properties using the two-dimensional confinement of a highly defined single-crystal surface. Thermal heating is the preferred approach to initiate the reaction, often via cleavage of halogen substituents from the molecular building blocks. Light represents an alternative stimulus but has, thus far, only rarely been used. Here, we present a direct comparison of on-surface polymerization of dibromo-anthracene molecules, induced either thermally or by light, and study the differences between the two approaches. Insight is obtained by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, locally studying the polymer shape and size, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which identifies bond formation by averaging over large surface areas. While the polymer length increases slowly with the sample heating temperature, illumination promotes only the formation of short covalent structures, independent of the duration of light exposure. Monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is attracting considerable attention because of its potential applications in areas such as nano- and opto-electronics, quantum optics and nanomagnetism. However, the implementation of such functional hBN demands precise lateral nanostructuration and integration with other two-dimensional materials, and hence, novel routes of synthesis beyond exfoliation. Here, a disruptive approach is demonstrated, namely, imprinting the lateral pattern of an atomically stepped one-dimensional template into a hBN monolayer. Specifically, hBN is epitaxially grown on vicinal Rhodium (Rh) surfaces using a Rh curved crystal for a systematic exploration, which produces a periodically textured, nanostriped hBN carpet that coats Rh(111)-oriented terraces and lattice-matched Rh(337) facets with tunable width. The electronic structure reveals a nanoscale periodic modulation of the hBN atomic potential that leads to an effective lateral semiconductor multi-stripe. Recently, few-layer PtSe 2 films have attracted significant attention due to their properties and promising applications in high-speed electronics, spintronics and optoelectronics. Until now, the transport properties of this material have not reached the theoretically predicted values, especially with regard to carrier mobility. In addition, it is not yet known which growth parameters (if any) can experimentally affect the carrier mobility value. This work presents the fabrication of horizontally aligned PtSe 2 films using one-zone selenization of pre-deposited platinum layers. We have identified the Se : Pt ratio as a parameter controlling the charge carrier mobility in the thin films. The mobility increases more than twice as the ratio changes in a narrow interval around a value of 2. A simultaneous reduction of the carrier concentration suggests that ionized impurity scattering is responsible for the observed mobility behaviour. Impurity doping in silicon (Si) ultra-large-scale integration is one of the key challenges which prevent further device miniaturization. Using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the total fluorescence yield mode, we show that the lowest unoccupied and highest occupied electronic states of ≤3 nm thick SiO 2 -coated Si nanowells shift by up to 0.2 eV below the conduction band and ca. 0.7 eV below the valence band edge of bulk silicon, respectively. This nanoscale electronic structure shift induced by anions at surfaces (NESSIAS) provides the means for low-nanoscale intrinsic Si (i-Si) to be flooded by electrons from an external (bigger, metallic) reservoir, thereby getting highly electron- (n-) conductive. While our findings deviate from the behavior commonly believed to govern the properties of silicon nanowells, they are further confirmed by the fundamental energy gap as per nanowell thickness when compared against published experimental data. Supporting our findings further with hybrid density functional theory calculations, we show that other group IV semiconductors (diamond, Ge) do respond to the NESSIAS effect in accord with Si. We predict adequate nanowire cross-sections (X-sections) from experimental nanowell data with a recently established crystallographic analysis, paving the way to undoped ultrasmall silicon electronic devices with significantly reduced gate lengths, using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible materials.

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are at the frontier of research on graphene materials since the 1D quantum confinement of electrons allows for the opening of an energy gap. GNRs of uniform and well-defined size and shape can be grown using the bottom-up approach, i.e. by surface assisted polymerization of aromatic hydrocarbons. Since the electronic properties of the nanostructures depend on their width and on their edge states, by careful choice of the precursor molecule it is possible to design GNRs with tailored properties. A key issue for their application in nanoelectronics is their stability under operative conditions. Here, we characterize pristine and oxygen-exposed 1.0 nm wide GNRs with a well-defined mixed edge-site sequence (two zig-zag and one armchair) synthesized on Ag(110) from 1,6-dibromo-pyrene precursors. The energy gap and the presence of quantum confined states are investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The effect of oxygen exposure under ultra-high vacuum conditions is inferred from scanning tunneling microscopy images and photoemission spectra. Our results demonstrate that oxygen exposure deeply affects the overall system by interacting both with the nanoribbons and with the substrate; this factor must be considered for supported GNRs under operative conditions.

The beamline for advanced dichroism of the Istituto Officina dei Materiali-Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, operating at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste (Italy), works in the extreme ultraviolet-soft x-ray photon energy range with selectable light polarization, high energy resolution, brilliance, and time resolution. The beamline offers a multi-technique approach for the investigation of the electronic, chemical, structural, magnetic, and dynamical properties of materials. Recently, one of the three end stations has been dedicated to experiments based on electron transfer processes at the solid/liquid interfaces and during photocatalytic or electrochemical reactions. Suitable cells to perform soft x-ray spectroscopy in the presence of liquids and reagent gases at ambient pressure were developed. Here, we present two types of static cells working in transmission or in fluorescence yield and an electrochemical flow cell that allows us to carry out cyclic voltammetry in situ and electrodeposition on a working electrode and to study chemical reactions under operando conditions. Examples of x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements performed under ambient conditions and during electrochemical experiments in liquids are presented.

The electronic structures of V-intercalated TiSe 2 and substitutionally doped dichalcogenides Ti 1- x V x Se 2 have been studied using soft X-ray photoelectron, resonant photoelectron, and absorption spectroscopies. In the case of the substitution of Ti by V, the formation of coherently oriented structural fragments VSe 2 and TiSe 2 is observed and a small charge transfer between these fragments is found. Intercalation of the V atoms into TiSe 2 leads to charge transfer from the V atoms to the Ti atoms with the formation of covalent complexes Ti-Se 3 -V-Se 3 -Ti.

We have experimentally determined the lateral registry and geometric structure of free-base porphine (2H-P) and copper-metalated porphine (Cu-P) adsorbed on Cu(111), by means of energy-scanned photoelectron diffraction (PhD), and compared the experimental results to density functional theory (DFT) calculations that included van der Waals corrections within the Tkatchenko-Scheffler approach. Both 2H-P and Cu-P adsorb with their center above a surface bridge site. Consistency is obtained between the experimental and DFT-predicted structural models, with a characteristic change in the corrugation of the four N atoms of the molecule's macrocycle following metalation. Interestingly, comparison with previously published data for cobalt porphine adsorbed on the same surface evidences a distinct increase in the average height of the N atoms above the surface through the series 2H-P, Cu-P, and cobalt porphine. Such an increase strikingly anti-correlates the DFT-predicted adsorption strength, with 2H-P having the smallest adsorption height despite the weakest calculated adsorption energy. In addition, our findings suggest that for these macrocyclic compounds, substrate-to-molecule charge transfer and adsorption strength may not be univocally correlated.

The space between a metal surface and a two-dimensional cover can be regarded as a nanoreactor, where confined molecule adsorption and surface reactions may occur. In this work, we report CO intercalation and reactivity between a graphene-hexagonal boron nitride (h-BNG) heterostructure and Pt(111). By employing high resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) we demonstrate the molecular intercalation of the full h-BNG overlayer and stabilization of a dense R 23.4°-13CO layer on Pt(111) under ultra-high vacuum at room temperature. We provide experimental evidence of a weakened CO-metal bond due to the confinement effects of the 2D cover. Temperature-programmed XPS results reveal that CO desorption is kinetically delayed and occurs at a higher temperature than on bare Pt(111). Moreover, CO partially reacts with the h-BNG layer to form boron-oxide species, which affect repeated CO intercalation. Finally, we found that the properties of the system towards interaction with CO can be considerably recovered using high temperature treatment.

The structure and electronic properties of carbon-based nanostructures obtained by metal surface assisted synthesis is highly dependent on the nature of the precursor molecule. Here, we report on a combined scanning tunneling microscopy, soft X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory investigation on the surface assisted polymerization of Br-corannulene at Ag(110) and on the possibility of building a mesh of π-conjugated polymers starting from buckyball shaped molecules. Indeed, the corannulene units form one-molecule-wide ribbons in which the natural concavity of the precursor molecule is maintained. These C-based nanostructures are corrugated and merge into a covalent network on the surface.

The comparison of the specifics of the guest-host chemical bonding in the materials with (Fe x TiSe 2 ) and without (Fe x TiTe 2 ) ordering of the iron atoms was performed. For this purpose the electronic structure of the materials were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations (total density of states, partial density of states, and multiplet calculations). For the iron-intercalated TiTe 2 compound iron-chalcogen bonds are formed, whereas the formation of iron-iron bonds is most typical for the iron-intercalated TiSe 2 compound. This leads to an increase in the lifetime of electrons on the titanium atoms and does not allow the formation of atomic chains of intercalated metal.

The electronic structure of the ZrX 2 (X = Se, Te) compounds has been studied using photoelectron, resonant photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, theoretical calculations of the X-ray absorption spectra, and density of electronic states. It was found that the absorption spectra and valence band spectra are influenced by the chalcogen type. The results of the multiplet calculation of the Zr 4+ atom show that the change in the splitting in the crystal field, which is described by the 10Dq parameter, is due to the change in the ratio of covalent and ionic contributions to the chemical bond. The resonance band near the Fermi level in the valence band spectra is observed for ZrTe 2 in the Zr 3p-4d resonant excitation mode. The extent of photon energy indicates the charge localization on the Zr atom. Similar resonance band for ZrSe 2 is absent; it indicates the presence of a gap at the Fermi level.

The nature of the oxygen species active in ethylene epoxidation is a long-standing question. While the structure of the oxygen species that participates in total oxidation (nucleophilic oxygen) is known the atomic structure of the selective species (electrophilic oxygen) is still debated. Here, we use both in situ and UHV X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to study the interaction of oxygen with a silver surface. We show experimental evidence that the unreconstructed adsorbed atomic oxygen (O ads ) often argued to be active in epoxidation has a binding energy (BE) ≤ 528 eV, showing a core-level shift to lower BE with respect to the O-reconstructions, as previously predicted by DFT. Thus, contrary to the frequent assignment, adsorbed atomic oxygen cannot account for the electrophilic oxygen species with an O 1s BE of 530-531 eV, thought to be the active species in ethylene epoxidation. Moreover, we show that O ads is present at very low O-coverages during in situ XPS measurements and that it can be obtained at slightly higher coverages in UHV at low temperature. DFT calculations support that only low coverages of O ads are stable. The highly reactive species is titrated by background gases even at low temperature in UHV conditions. Our findings suggest that at least two different species could participate in the partial oxidation of ethylene on silver.

We have studied the valence electronic structure of Ag 1-x Sn 1+x Se 2 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.25) and SnSe (x = 1.0) by a combined analysis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Both XAS and XPS reveal an increase in electron carriers in the system with x (i.e. excess Sn concentration) for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25. The core-level spectra (Sn 3d, Ag 3d and Se 3d) show that the charge state of Ag is almost 1+, while that of of Sn splits into Sn 2+ and Sn 4+ (providing clear evidence of valence skipping for the first time) with a concomitant splitting of Se into Se 2- and Se 2-δ states. The x dependence of the split components in Sn and Se together with the Se-K edge XAS reveals that the Se valence state may have an essential role in the transport properties of this system.

In this paper, we study the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/graphene vertically stacked ultrathin films by means of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We compare two systems: an iron layer deposited directly on top of the Pt(111) surface, and an intercalated Fe film sandwiched between graphene and Pt(111). The system composed of a submonolayer Fe deposited directly on Pt(111) maintains an out-of-plane easy magnetization axis, even if it has been covered by graphene that quenches effectively the magnetic orbital moment of Fe. However, when the Fe coverage is increased above 1 ML the easy magnetization axis flips in the in-plane direction.

By a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray spectroscopic techniques and density functional theory calculations, we prove the formation of extended patterns of parallel, graphene nanoribbons with alternate zig-zag and armchair edges and selected width by surface-assisted Ullmann coupling polymerization and dehydrogenation of 1,6-dibromopyrene (C 16 H 8 Br 2 ). Besides the relevance of these nanostructures for their possible application in nanodevices, we demonstrate the peculiarity of halogenated pyrene derivatives for the formation of nanoribbons, in particular on Ag(110). These results open the possibility of tuning the shape and dimension of nanoribbons (and hence the correlated electronic properties) by choosing suitably tailored or on-purpose designed molecular precursors.

The properties of β-NaEuF4/NaGdF4 core-shell nanocrystals have been thoroughly investigated. Nanoparticles with narrow size distribution and an overall diameter of ∼22 nm have been produced with either small β-NaEuF4 cores (∼3 nm diameter) or large β-NaEuF4 cores (∼18 nm diameter). The structural properties and core-shell formation are investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance, respectively. Optical luminescence measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are employed to gain information about the optical emission bands and valence states of the rare earth constituents. Magnetic characterization is performed by SQUID and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the rare earth M(4,5) edges. The characterization of the core-shell nanoparticles by means of these complementary techniques demonstrates that partial intermixing of core and shell materials takes place, and a significant fraction of europium is present in the divalent state which has significant influence on the magnetic properties. Hence, we obtained a combination of red emitting Eu(3+) ions and paramagnetic Gd(3+) ions, which may be highly valuable for potential future applications.

Aerosol processing enables the preparation of hierarchical graphene nanocomposites with special crumpled morphology in high yield and in a short time. Using modular insertion of suitable precursors in the starting solution, it is possible to synthesize different types of graphene-based materials ranging from heteroatom-doped graphene nanoballs to hierarchical nanohybrids made up by nitrogen-doped crumpled graphene nanosacks that wrap finely dispersed MoS2 nanoparticles. These materials are carefully investigated by microscopic (SEM, standard and HR TEM), diffraction (grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD)) and spectroscopic (high resolution photoemission, Raman and UV-visible spectroscopy) techniques, evidencing that nitrogen dopants provide anchoring sites for MoS2 nanoparticles, whereas crumpling of graphene sheets drastically limits aggregation. The activity of these materials is tested toward the photoelectrochemical production of hydrogen, obtaining that N-doped graphene/MoS2 nanohybrids are seven times more efficient with respect to single MoS2 because of the formation of local p-n MoS2/N-doped graphene nanojunctions, which allow an efficient charge carrier separation.

Dibromotetracene molecules are deposited on the Cu(110) surface at room temperature. The complex evolution of this system has been monitored at different temperatures (i.e., 298, 523, 673, and 723 K) by means of a variety of complementary techniques that range from STM and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) to high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). State-of-the-art density-functional calculations were used to determine the chemical processes that take place on the surface. After deposition at room temperature, the organic molecules are transformed into organometallic monomers through debromination and carbon-radical binding to copper adatoms. Organometallic dimers, trimers, or small oligomers, which present copper-bridged molecules, are formed by increasing the temperature. Surprisingly, further heating to 673 K causes the formation of elongated chains along the Cu(110) close-packed rows as a consequence of radical-site migration to the thermodynamically more stable molecule heads. Finally, massive dehydrogenation occurs at the highest temperature followed by ring condensation to nanographenic patches. The emerging fields of graphene-based magnetic and spintronic devices require a deep understanding of the interface between graphene and ferromagnetic metals. This paper reports a detailed investigation at the nanometer level of the Fe-graphene interface carried out by angle-resolved photoemission, high-resolution photoemission from core levels, near edge X-ray absorption fine structure, scanning tunnelling microscopy and spin polarized density functional theory calculations. Quasi-free-standing graphene was grown on Pt(111), and the iron film was either deposited atop or intercalated beneath graphene. Calculations and experimental results show that iron strongly modifies the graphene band structure and lifts its π band spin degeneracy.

We have deposited two monolayers of Sn onto Rh(111) single crystal. After the deposition, no ordered structure was revealed by low energy electron diffraction (LEED). We oxidized the obtained system in a low-pressure oxygen atmosphere at 420 K. The oxidized sample was then gradually heated to study the thermal stability of the oxide layer. We characterized the system by synchrotron radiation stimulated photoelectron spectroscopy and LEED. Valence band and core level photoelectron spectra of rhodium, tin and oxygen were used to study the oxidation of the Sn-Rh(111) surface and its behaviour upon annealing. A low stoichiometric oxide of Sn was created on the surface. The oxidation process did not continue towards creation of SnO(2) with higher oxygen dose. The annealing at 970 K caused decomposition of the surface oxide of Sn and creation of an ordered (√3 × √3)R30° Sn-Rh(111) surface alloy.
