Introduction: Ileostomy, frequently created after colorectal resections, hinders the physiologic function of the colon and can lead to dehydration and acute kidney injury due to high stoma outputs. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive measures on ileostomy-induced dehydration and related readmissions in a high-volume unit., Methods: In this prospective cohort study at a high-volume colorectal surgery department in Turkiye, the Prospective Ileostomy-induced Dehydration Prevention Bundle Project (PIDBP) was assessed from March 2021 to March 2022. The study enrolled patients undergoing colorectal surgery with ileostomy and involved comprehensive inpatient stoma care, education, and a structured post-discharge follow-up. The follow-up included the "Hydration follow-up scale" to monitor ileostomy output and related complications. The primary outcome was the readmission rate due to dehydration-related complications. The patients receiving the bundle intervention were compared with patients treated in the preceding year, focusing on the effectiveness of interventions such as dietary adjustments, fluid therapy, and pharmacological management., Results: In the study, 104 patients were analyzed, divided into 54 pre-bundle and 50 bundle group patients, with no significant differences in patient characteristics. While the overall readmission rate due to dehydration was 12.5%, a significant reduction in dehydration-related readmissions was observed in the bundle group compared to the pre-bundle group (2% vs. 22%, p = 0.002). Univariate analysis identified high stoma output (> 800 ml/24 h) (p < 0.001), chronic renal failure (CRF) (p = 0.01), postoperative ileus (p = 0.03), higher ASA status (p = 0.04), extended hospital stays (p = 0.03), and small bowel resections (especially in J-pouch patients) (p < 0.001) as significant predictors of readmission. Multivariate analysis revealed that the mean ileostomy output before discharge was the sole significant predictor of dehydration-related readmission (OR 1.01), with an optimal cutoff of 877.5 ml/day identified with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.947, demonstrating high sensitivity (92.3%) and specificity (86.8%) in predicting readmission risk., Conclusion: The Prospective Ileostomy-induced Dehydration Prevention Bundle Project significantly reduced readmission rates after colorectal surgery., (© 2024. Purpose: This study aims to adapt and validate the Cleveland Clinic Colorectal Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (CCF-CaQL) in Turkish, addressing the significant need for reliable, language-specific QoL measures for colorectal cancer (CRC) in Turkiye. This effort fills a critical gap in CRC patient care, enhancing both patient-provider communication and disease-specific QoL assessment., Methods: The CCF-CaQL was translated into Turkish, verified for accuracy, and reviewed for clarity and relevance. Eligible patients who underwent colorectal surgery for cancer between July 2021 and July 2022 from six hospitals completed the CCF-CaQL and SF-36 questionnaires. For analysis, confirmatory factor analysis using Smart PLS 4 and descriptive statistics were employed. The questionnaire's reliability and validity were assessed using Cronbach alpha, composite reliability, and the heterotrait-monotrait (HTMT) ratio, along with multicollinearity checks and factor loadings. Nonparametric resampling was used for precise error and confidence interval calculations, and the Spearman coefficient and split-half method were applied for reliability testing., Results: In the study involving 244 colorectal cancer patients, confirmatory factor analysis of the CCF-CaQL indicated effective item performance, with one item removed due to lower factor loading. The questionnaire exhibited high internal consistency, evidenced by a Cronbach alpha value of 0.909. Convergent validity was strong, with all average variance extracted (AVE) values exceeding 0.4. Discriminant validity was confirmed with HTMT coefficients below 0.9, and no significant multicollinearity issues were observed (VIF values < 10). Parallel testing with the SF-36 scale demonstrated moderate to very strong correlations, affirming the CCF-CaQL's comparability in measuring quality of life., Conclusion: The Turkish version of the CCF-CaQL was validated for assessing quality of life in colorectal cancer patients. This validation confirms its reliability and cultural appropriateness for use in Turkiye. Background: Anastomotic leakage is a major complication in colorectal surgery, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality rates. Despite substantial progress in surgical technique, anastomotic leakage rates remain stable. An early diagnosis of anastomotic leaks was proven to reduce adverse outcomes and improve survival., Objective: This study aims to find a novel scoring system for detecting anastomotic leaks using inflammatory and nutritional indicators after colorectal surgery. Our purpose was to analyze the diagnostic accuracy of leak scores ( ( CRP POD 3 ) ( CRP POD 1 ) ∗ preoperative albumin level ) in predicting postoperative complications., Design: The study included colorectal cancer patients who underwent curative surgery at Koc University Hospital between 2014 and 2018. Patients were categorized into two groups depending on the presence of anastomotic leaks and compared in terms of preoperative albumin levels, CRP levels in postoperative days 1 and 3, anastomotic leakage rates, length of hospital stay, and CRP quotient, which was calculated by dividing POD 3 CRP level to POD 1 CRP level. The bedside leak score is calculated by dividing the CRP quotient by the preoperative albumin level. The predictive value of bedside leak score, CRP quotient, and preoperative albumin levels in estimating anastomotic leakage was analyzed, and a cutoff value for the leak score was calculated., Results: A total of 184 patients were included in the study. The leak score, CRP POD 3-1 ratio, and preoperative albumin levels were found to successfully detect anastomotic leakage. The area under the curve for the leak score was calculated as 0.78. The optimal cutoff value was found to be 50.3 for the bedside leak score, which shows 90.9% sensitivity and 59.3% specificity., Conclusion: The leak score may represent a valuable diagnostic tool for detecting patients at risk for anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery and planning a better strategy to reduce morbidity and mortality rates and associated costs. Background: The dysfunctions in the metabolism of iron have an important role in many pathological conditions, ranging from disease with iron deposition to cancer. Studies on malignant diseases of the breast reported irregular expression in genes associated with iron metabolism. The variations are related to findings that have prognostic significance. This study evaluated the relationship of the expression levels of transferrin receptor 1 (TFRC), iron regulatory protein 1 (IRP1), hepcidin (HAMP), ferroportin 1 (FPN1), hemojuvelin (HFE2), matriptase 2 (TMPRSS6), and miR-122 genes in the normal and malignant tissues of breast cancer patients., Methods & Results: The normal and malignant tissues from 75 women with breast malignancies were used in this study. The patients did not receive any treatment previously. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used in figuring the levels of gene expression associated with iron metabolism. When the malignant and normal tissues gene expression levels were analyzed, expression of TFRC increased (1.586-fold); IRP1 (0.594 fold) and miR-122 (0.320 fold) expression decreased; HAMP, FPN1, HFE2, and TMPRSS6 expressions did not change. FPN1 and IRP1 had a positive association, and this association was statistically significant (r = 0.266; p = 0.022). IRP1 and miR-122 had a positive association, and this association had statistical significance (r = 0.231; p = 0.048)., Conclusions: Our study portrayed the important association between genes involved in iron hemostasis and breast malignancy. The results could be used to establish new diagnostic techniques in the management of breast malignancies. The alterations in the metabolism of malignant breast cells with normal breast cells could be utilized to achieve advantages in treatment., (© 2023. Objective: In this study, we aimed to compare long term oncological outcomes of upfront surgery versus neoadjuvant treatment in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer., Methods: A total of 183 patients who were operated for gastric cancer were retrospectively analyzed. The patients received either standard gastrectomy or preoperative NACT + gastrectomy. Neoadjuvant therapy was administered with FLOT regimen (docetaxel, oxaliplatin, fluorouracil, and leucovorin) or DCF regimen (docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil)., Results: Of the patients receiving NACT, 33 received FLOT regimen and 14 received DCF regimen. The number of male patients was higher in both standard gastrectomy and NACT + gastrectomy groups (p=0.385). Leukopenia and neutropenia were the most common hematological toxicities, while anemia and nausea were the most frequent non-hematological side effects in the both of NACT group. The outcomes of the grades of postoperative complications according to the Clavien-Dindo classification is similar between groups. There was no statistically significant difference in the length of hospital stay after surgery between the groups (p=0,001). According to the disease stage, it was found no statistically significant difference in the OS and DFS between the NACT and standard gastrectomy groups., Conclusion: Although we found no significant difference between the patients undergoing standard gastrectomy and those undergoing NACT before gastrectomy, we believe that NACT may contribute to the favorable prognosis of patients with locally advanced disease with improved OS and DFS and this should be examined in future studies., Key Words: FLOT, Gastric Cancer, Neoadjuvant Treatment.

Objectives: Prognostic importance of metastatic lymph nodes in pancreatic cancer is always garnered attention due to dismal prognosis, with some quantitative factors drawing attention for significantly predicting outcomes. Size is one of the easy approach morphological characteristics of the lymph node, and data for effect of largest metastatic lymph node (LMLN) size on survival outcomes are lacking in pancreatic cancer. We aim to evaluate the effect of LMLN size on the prognosis of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC)., Methods: This retrospective study evaluates the effect of LMLN size on survival outcomes by grouping the patients who were surgically treated for PDAC, according to their lymph node stage and calculated cutoff value for LMLN size, between February 2015 and May 2020., Results: In the study cohort of 131 patients, the mean age was 63.9±10.8 years and 77 patients were female. Ninety-nine of the patients had pN1, 32 had pN2 stage disease. The optimal cutoff point of LMLN size for predicting the prognosis was calculated as 7.5 mm (sensitivity = 81% and specificity = 81%). 34 (34.3%) of pN1 and 7 (21.9%) of pN2-staged patients had lymph node smaller than 7.5 mm. Three-year survival was significantly longer for patients whose LMLN size was <7.5 mm (56.2-18.2%, p<0.001). Whereas, the patients with LMLN size <7.5 mm had statistically significant longer median survival rate in the subgroup of patients with pN1 lymph node stage, no significant difference in median survival rates was observed between subgroups of pN2 patients (p=0.237)., Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the LMLN size was one of the potential predictors of survival in patients with PDAC., Competing Interests: None declared., (©Copyright 2022 by The Medical Bulletin of Sisli Etfal Hospital.)

Inguinal and incisional hernias are the two most common types of hernias caused by abdominal wall weakness and defects in connective tissue. The structure of the extracellular matrix, mainly collagen and metalloproteinases (MMPs), and their regulators have been studied extensively and found to play a significant role in the pathophysiology of hernias. One of the regulators of MMPs, tissue inhibitor metalloproteinases (TIMPs), bind to MMPs and inhibit its activity significantly shifting the balance towards collagen synthesis rather than degradation. Due to their importance in collagen metabolism, their metabolism might be significant in the aetiology of hernias. Our study used immunohistochemical techniques to investigate the possible effects of TIMP 1 and 2 on the samples taken from the abdominal walls of patients with inguinal and incisional hernias, compared them with control patients, and reviewed the literature. In this study, samples of 90 patients (30 patients from control, inguinal hernia, and incisional hernia groups) were taken and analysed. These samples were stained with TIMP-1 Ab-2 and TIMP2 Ab-5 (Clone 3A4) antibodies and evaluated under ×100 magnification. The degree of staining was classified as (a): No staining (0), (b): Staining less than 10% (I), (c): Staining between 10% and 50% (II), (d): Staining more than 50% (III). Statistical analyses were done. No significant difference was found between groups in terms of patient demographics. Smoking and family history of hernia was not found to be associated with TIMP expression. TIMP1 expression was significantly higher in the incisional and inguinal hernia group than in the control group (P < .05), while the level of TIMP2 was higher in the control group. (P < .05). TIMP1 and TIMP2 levels did not significantly differ between incisional and inguinal hernia groups. We found significantly increased TIMP-1 levels in tissue samples from patients with hernia supporting its suggested role in hernia pathophysiology. Local alterations in MMP and TIMP levels might play a role in the pathogenesis of hernias. Thus detection of TIMP in tissues can be important for clinical use after further validation studies. Purpose: To assess whether size, diameter, and large vein involvement of MR-detected extramural venous invasion (MR-EMVI) have an impact on neoadjuvant therapy response in rectal adenocarcinoma., Methods: 57 patients with locally advanced rectal adenocarcinoma scanned with MRI before and after neoadjuvant therapy were included. Two abdominal radiologists evaluated the images with special emphasis on EMVI, on initial staging and after neoadjuvant treatment. The sensitivity and specificity of MRI for detection of rest EMVI were determined. The association of various MR-EMVI characteristics including number, size, and main vein involvement with treatment response was investigated. In subjects with discordance of radiology and pathology, elastin stain was performed, and images and slides were re-evaluated on site with a multidisciplinary approach., Results: At initial evaluation, 17 patients were MR-EMVI negative (29.8%) and 40 were MR-EMVI positive (70.2%). Complete/near-complete responders had less number (mean 1.45) and smaller diameter of MR-EMVI (mean 1.8 mm), when compared with partial responders (2.54 and 3.3 mm; p < 0.005). The sensitivity of MRI for rest EMVI detection was high, specificity was moderate, and in one patient elastin stain changed the final decision. In five patients with rest MR-EMVI positivity, carcinoma histopathologically had a distinctive serpiginous perivascular spread, growing along the track of vascular bundle, although it did not appear in intravascular spaces., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that not only the presence, but also size and number of EMVI that may be significant clinically and thus these parameters also ought to be incorporated to the MRI evaluation and prognostication of treatment response. From pathology perspective, tumors growing alongside major vessels may also reflect EMVI even if they are not demonstrably "intravascular.", (© 2022. Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Genetic risk factors associated with breast cancer incidence have been identified., Aims: This study is aimed at determining the association of XRCC3 Thr241Met (rs861539), XRCC4 G(-1394) T (rs6869366) DNA repair and BAX G(-248) A (rs4645878), and BCL2 C(-938) A (rs2279115) apoptotic gene polymorphisms with breast cancer., Materials and Methods: Genetic analysis was performed using peripheral blood samples. Gene polymorphisms were detected by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. 175 patients and 158 healthy controls were enrolled in the study., Results: Breast cancer risk was 5.43 times more in individuals with AA genotype of Bax G(-248) A (rs4645878) ( P = 0.002). The risk of metastasis was 11 times with this genotype. It was associated with 6 times more risk of having a tumor larger than 2 cm. The risk of breast cancer was 2.77 times more in individuals carrying the Met/Met genotype of XRCC3 Thr241Met (rs861539) ( P = 0.009). The risk of having advanced clinical stage (stage III+IV) with the Met/Met genotype was 4 times more increased. Objective: This study aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in gastric cancer and to compare MIS versus open gastrectomy (OG) in terms of early mortality and morbidity, long-term oncological outcomes, and recurrence rates., Methods: A total of 75 patients who underwent MIS or OG for gastric cancer at Koç University School of Medicine between December 2014 and December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Postoperative complications and disease-specific survival were compared between surgical approaches., Results: Of the patients, 44 were treated with MIS and 31 with OG. In the MIS group, 33 patients underwent laparoscopic surgery, and 11 patients underwent robotic gastrectomy. Duration of operation was significantly longer in the MIS group than in the OG group (p<0.0001). The median amount of blood loss was 142.5 (range, 110 to 180) mL in the MIS group and 180.4 (range, 145 to 230) mL in the OG group (p<0.706). The median number of lymph node dissection was 38.9 (range, 15 to 66) and 38.7 (range, 12 to 70) in the MIS and OG groups, respectively (p<0.736). The median length of hospitalization, twelve days in the OG group and nine days in the MIS group. Median follow-up was 19.1 (range, 2 to 61) months in the MIS group and 22.1 (range, 2 to 58) months in the OG group. The median OS and DFS rates were 56.8 months and 39.6 months in the MIS group, respectively (log-rank; p=0.004) and 31.6 months and 23.1 months in the OG group, respectively (log-rank; p=0.003)., Conclusion: Our study results suggest that, despite its technical challenges, MIS is an effective and safe method in treating gastric cancer with favorable early mortality and morbidity rates and long-term oncological outcomes, and acceptable recurrence rates., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2021, Omarov et al.)

Background: Oncologic outcomes after complete mesocolic excision (CME) in colon cancer are under investigation. The aim of our study was to compare CME and conventional colectomy (CC) in terms of pathological and oncological outcomes for right colon cancer and to evaluate the impact of lymph node metastasis around the vascular tie on survival., Methods: Consecutive patients with right colon cancer who had CME or CC between January 2011 and August 2018 at two specialized centers in Turkey were included. Statistical analyses were performed with respect to demographic characteristics, operative and pathologic outcomes, harvested and metastatic lymph nodes around the vascular tie (LNVT), recurrences, and survival., Results: There were 91 patients in the CME group (58 males, mean age 64 ± 16 years) and 192 patients in the CC group (96 males, mean age 66 ± 14 years). The mean number of harvested lymph nodes (CME: 42 ± 15 vs CC: 34 ± 13, p = 0.01) and LNVT were higher in the CME group (CME: 3.2 ± 2.2 vs CC: 2.4 ± 1.6, p = 0.001). LNVT metastases were 7.7% and 8.3% in the CME and CC groups, respectively (p = 0.85). Three-year overall and disease-free survival rates were 96.4% and 90.9% in the CME group and 90.4% and 87.6% in the CC group in stage I-III patients (p > 0.05). In stage III patients, the 3-year overall survival (92.5% vs 63.5%, p = 0.03) and disease-free survival (85.6% vs 52.1%, p = 0.008) were significantly better in LNVT-negative patients than in LNVT-positive patients., Conclusion: LNVT metastasis seems to be the key factor associated with poor disease-free and overall survival in right colon cancer regardless of the radicality of surgery.

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women worldwide. The TMPRSS6 (Transmembrane Serine Protease 6) gene encodes matriptase-2, which plays an important role in iron hemostasis as the hepcidin regulator and may play a role in breast cancer susceptibility. In this study, we examined the expression levels of the TMPRSS6 gene in healthy tissues and tumor tissues of breast cancer patients; and the relationship between these levels and pathological findings. The relationship between TMPRSS6 polymorphisms (rs733655, rs5756506, rs2413450, rs855791, rs2235324, rs4820268) and patients' hematological parameters. The gene expression study encompassed 47 breast cancer patients and the gene polymorphism study consisted of 181 breast cancer patients and 100 healthy controls. Gene expression analysis was performed by qRT-PCR. The genotyping of TMPRSS6 polymorphisms was performed by RT-PCR. TMPRSS6 gene expression levels in tumor tissues were found to be 1.88 times higher than the expression levels in the control tissues. We examined the relationship between TMPRSS6 gene expression levels and pathological data, statistically significant relationship was found between patient's estrogen receptor (ER) and HER2 findings and TMPRSS6 gene expression (respectively p = 0.02, p = 0.002). When the relationship between TMPRSS6 gene polymorphisms related genotypes distributions and hematological findings was investigated, a significant relationship was identified between mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) parameter and the polymorphism of only the rs733655. According to our findings, the increase in TMPRSS6 gene expression in cancerous tissues shows that matriptase-2 may be effective in the cancer process. Thus TMPRSS6 gene polymorphisms may affect the disease process by affecting the blood parameters of patients.

Purpose: Live surgical demonstrations are considered an effective educational tool providing a chance for trainees to observe a real-time decision-making process of expert surgeons. No data exists evaluating the impact of live surgical demonstrations on the outcomes of minimally invasive colorectal surgery. This study evaluates perioperative and short-term postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing minimally invasive colorectal surgery in the setting of live surgical demonstrations., Methods: Patients undergoing minimally invasive colorectal surgery which was performed as live surgical demonstrations (the study group) performed between 2006 and 2018 were reviewed. These patients were case-matched with those undergoing operations in routine practice (the control group). The study and control group were compared for intraoperative and short-term postoperative outcomes., Results: Thirty-nine live surgery cases in the study group were case-matched with its thirty-nine counterparts as the control group. Operating time was longer (200 vs 165 min; p = 0.002) and estimated intraoperative blood loss was higher in the study group (100 vs 55 ml; p = 0.008). Patients in the study group stayed longer in the hospital (6 vs 5 days; p = 0.001). While conversion (n = 4 vs n = 1, p = 0.358) and intraoperative complications (n = 6 vs n = 2, p = 0.2) were more frequent in the study group, these outcomes did not reach statistical significance. Overall complications were higher in the study group (n = 22 vs n = 9, p = 0.003). One patient underwent a reoperation due to postoperative bleeding, and one mortality occurred in the live surgery group., Conclusions: Live surgical demonstrations in minimally invasive colorectal surgery seem to be associated with increased risk of operative morbidity.

To date, the single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) technique has been applied to a wide range of general surgical procedures; however, there are still scant data and debates on adrenal procedures. The aim of this study was to compare surgical outcomes of single-incision versus laparoscopic multiport adrenalectomy. The patients were divided into 2 study groups on the basis of the surgical approach: SILS (group 1) and multiport laparoscopic surgery (group 2). Patient demographics and their perioperative and postoperative results were evaluated retrospectively from the medical records. A total of 80 patients were included in the study. There were 44 patients in group 1 and 36 patients in group 2. The average operative time, estimated blood loss, and tumor size were similar between the study groups. There were no mortalities in both groups and the mean duration of hospital stay was 3 days for both groups. Without using any single-incision access trocars and articulated instrumentation, we achieved the same surgical outcomes in our SILS adrenalectomy series compared with conventional multiport laparoscopy series in terms of postoperative short-term outcomes and cost-effectivity.

A Morgagni's hernia is a congenital defect found in the anterior aspect of the diaphragm between the costal and the sternal portions of this muscle. This defect is also referred to as the space of Larrey. It has been reported that 70% of patients with Morgagni's hernia are female, 90% of the hernias are right-sided, and 92% of the hernias have hernia sacs. This type of hernia is a rare clinical entity and accounts for 3% of all surgically treated diaphragmatic hernias. There are no large retrospective or prospective studies on this topic. This type of hernia is a rare type among adults without a well-described prevalence and without well-established definitive management strategies. There are also few clinical reports about this clinical entity and its surgical treatment. We treated 21 patients with Morgagni's hernia in a 12-year period, and we report our experience while discussing the surgical treatment of this disease. We performed a retrospective review of the 21 patients who were operated between 2003 and 2015. These patients had undergone surgical repair of Morgagni's hernia. For each subject, demographic data, symptoms of presentation, physical examination findings, preoperative imaging studies and diagnosis, and surgical procedures were documented. Location of the hernia sac and its contents, postoperative complications, and duration of hospital stay were recorded and evaluated. Twelve patients were females and nine were males. The mean age of patients was 63.85 years. Dyspnea was the most prominent symptom in our patients. Morgagni's hernias were located on the right side in 19 patients and on the left side in 2 patients. Chest X-ray in 10 patients and abdominal computerized tomography in 17 patients were the major diagnostic tools. Four patients were operated as emergency while others underwent elective surgery (17 patients). Twelve patients were operated with laparoscopy and the remaining nine were operated with the conventional open abdominal technique. Hernia sacs were observed in all of the patients and removed except in four of them. The omentum and the transverse colon were the most commonly seen organs in hernia sacs. Hernia defects were repaired with primary sutures in four patients (all open cases) and primary closure supported with mesh in six patients (four laparoscopic, two open cases). In the remaining 11 patients, hernia defects were closed with synthetic meshes (eight laparoscopic, three open cases). Mean postoperative hospital stay was 9.8 days. No recurrence was observed in any patients. Only one of our patients died during follow-up. In Morgagni's hernias, surgical intervention is necessary as the hernia may cause complications such as strangulation of the colon or intestines. Purpose: Cervical lymph node (LN) metastases in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) are common in tumors especially that are larger than 1cm. Ipsilateral central neck dissection (CND) is usually preferred even in the absence of a palpable LN. This study aims to clarify the incidence and predictive factors for occult ipsilateral central LN metastasis in these patients, and the management of patients without clinical evidence of metastasis., Methods: 204 PTC patients were studied. The patients were divided into two according to the tumor size of ≤5mm or larger. Patient demographics, tumor properties, LN metastasis, preoperative neck ultrasonography findings and surgical outcomes were analyzed., Results: There were 152 patients in study group-1 (nodule > 5 mm) and 52 patients in group-2 (nodule ≤ 5 mm). The mean tumor size was 11.9 mm. Overall, preoperative neck ultrasonography showed central neck LN in 25 (12.3%) patients, however, final pathology revealed metastatic LN at central compartment in 59 (28.9%) patients. There were 56 (27.5%) patients with metastasis in group-1 compared to 3 (1.4%) patients in group-2., Conclusions: Prophylactic CND is advised in PTC for the reduction of recurrence in central compartment. According to our results, in patients with tumors smaller than 5 mm and without evidence of nodal metastasis in preoperative neck ultrasonography, we do not recommend prophylactic CND.
