E-cigarette use is a growing public health concern, especially because of the potential health risks it poses. This study focuses on assessing e-cigarette dependence and the factors associated with it among Palestinian young adults. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to May 2023 among university students in the West Bank. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect demographic data, knowledge, and attitudes regarding e-cigarettes. E-cigarette dependence was assessed using the Penn State Electronic Cigarette Dependence Index. The study included 386 university students who used e-cigarettes. Many of them started using e-cigarettes at a young age, and 54.7% were dual users of e-cigarettes and traditional tobacco. High levels of dependence were reported in 11.4% of participants, and moderate dependence in 28.8%. Several factors were identified through multivariate linear regression as significantly associated with e-cigarette dependence: a higher monthly allowance (β = 0.116, 95% CI: 0.128- 1.124, p = .014), having a father who uses tobacco (β = 0.095, 95% CI: 0.030- 1.638, p = .042), having a close friend who smokes traditional cigarettes (β = 0.095, 95% CI: 0.019- 1.667, p = .045), using e-cigarettes in areas where traditional smoking is prohibited (β = 0.175, 95% CI: 0.689-2.330, p < .001), using e-cigarettes to quit other forms of tobacco (β = 0.134, 95% CI: 0.434-2.314, p = .004), and a more negative attitude score (β = - 0.210, 95% CI: - 0.285- - 0.112, p < .001). The study revealed high levels of e-cigarettes dependence among the participants among young adults, with associated variables such as monthly allowance, attitudes, and age of e-cigarette initiation. Background: Family medicine, often known as general practice, is the foundation of sustainable and universal healthcare worldwide. As a new specialty in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), it must recruit doctors and gain public acceptability, which has traditionally favored specialists., Aim: This research examined studies on Arab populations' attitudes toward family medicine and the specialty to discover barriers to creating and embracing this vital specialty., Design & Setting: This review was based on the PRISMA guidelines and encompassed peer-reviewed articles from reputable sources such as PsychNet, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and grey literature., Method: A comprehensive search was conducted across databases for peer-reviewed studies that explored Arabs' awareness, perceptions, and attitudes toward family medicine and physicians., Results: After a rigorous selection process, nineteen studies were deemed suitable for analysis. These studies encompassed diverse participants, including medical students, physicians, patients, and the general public. The overall perception of family medicine was positive, but it was noted that few had direct exposure to family physicians during their medical education or in the clinical setting., Conclusion: Our review suggests five significant efforts: 1) an education campaign for the general public about the role of Family Medicine; 2) increasing training capacity for family physicians; 3) early exposure to family physicians during medical school; 4) developing a process for continually improving the education and quality of family physician, 5) Further research on the challenges to FM practice in Arab countries are required to understand the situation better and work toward its improvement., (Copyright © 2024, The Authors.)

Objectives: The intensive care unit (ICU) mortality rate remains high, especially in developing countries, regardless of the advances in critical management. There is a lack of studies about mortality causes in hospitals and particularly ICUs in Palestine.This study evaluated the demographic and clinical characteristics of critically ill patients and determined the predictors of mortality among patients in the ICU., Methods: A retrospective study assessed all patients who stayed in the ICU for more than 24 h from January 2017 to January 2019. Data were collected from the patient's files. Patient characteristics (background, clinical variables, and comorbidities) were recorded., Results: The study included 227 eligible ICU patients. The cases' mean age was 55.5 (SD ± 18.2) years. The overall ICU mortality rate was 31.7%. The following factors were associated with high adjusted mortality odds: admission from inside the hospital (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 2.1, 95% CI: 1.1-3.9, p < 0.05), creatinine level ≥2 mg/dl on admission (aOR, 2.7, 95% CI: 1.3-5.8, p  < 0.01), hematology malignancy patients (aOR, 3.4, 95% CI: 1.6-6.7, p  = 0.001), immune-compromised (aOR, 2.5, 95% CI: 1.3-4.7, p  < 0.01), septic shock (aOR, 27.1, 95% CI: 7.9-88.3, p  < 0.001), hospital-acquired infections (aOR: 13.4, 95% CI: 4.1-57.1, p  < 0.001), and patients with multiple-source infection (aOR: 16.3, 95% CI: 6.4-57.1, p  < 0.001). Also, high SOFA and APACHE scores predicted morality ( p  < 0.001)., Conclusion: The mortality rate among ICU patients was high. It was higher among those admitted from the hospital wards, septic shock, hospital-acquired infection, multiple infection sources, and multi-drug resistance infections. Thus, strategies should be developed to enhance the ICU environment and provide sufficient resources to minimize the effects of these predictors.

Background: Lower urinary tract symptoms are common and can significantly impact quality of life, especially in men with co-morbidities and end-stage renal disease. The presence of lower urinary tract symptoms affect the quality of life of patients on hemodialysis., Objectives: The purpose of this study is assessing the presence and severity of lower urinary tract symptoms among male patients on hemodialysis. Factors that may exacerbate lower urinary tract symptoms were assessed and studied. The impact of lower urinary tract symptoms on quality of life was also identified., Methods: A prospective, multi-central, and cross-sectional study of male patients on hemodialysis was conducted. Demographics, clinical data, and core lower urinary tract symptoms score questionnaire were all collected. A correlation has been made between all variables., Results: One hundred forty-five patients were enrolled. Eighty-seven percent of hemodialysis patients had at least one storage symptom, and 85% had at least one voiding symptom. The prevalence of storage symptoms (frequency, nocturia, urgency, and urgency incontinence) was found to be 3%, 70%, 44%, and 12%, respectively. The voiding symptoms were mainly weak stream, straining, and incomplete emptying, which were found in 60%, 43%, and 36%, respectively. Fifteen percent of the cohort had a negatively significant impact on their quality of life. The absence of voiding symptoms was statistically linked to a better quality of life ( p  < 0.05). Hemodialysis patients who are over 60 years old, smokers, or obese were found to be significantly more likely to report storage symptoms (18%, 9%, and 79%, respectively; p  < 0.05). Bladder pain was significantly correlated to the dialysis duration of more than 24 months ( p  < 0.05)., Conclusion: Storage and voiding lower urinary tract symptoms are common among hemodialysis male patients with a minor impact on their quality of life. Introduction: Stress and burnout rank among the foremost dentistry-related concerns. Understanding stress and burnout among Palestinian dentists is crucial for developing targeted interventions and support systems. The study aimed to assess stress levels among dentists in Palestine, identify factors contributing to stress, and determine the relationship between stress and burnout in this professional group., Method: ology: A cross-sectional study was conducted, employing a self-administered questionnaire to gather data from 271 dentists from March to June 2023. The Maslach burnout inventory was utilized to measure burnout across emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment dimensions, while the 10-item perceived stress scale was employed to measure stress levels., Results: The findings revealed that 81% of Palestinian dentists reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress. Emotional exhaustion was a prominent aspect of burnout, with 48% of participants reporting high levels. The multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated a significant association between stress scores and female participants (p = 0.001), daily sleeping hours (p = 0.016), as well as emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment burnout subscales (p ≤ 0.001 for both)., Conclusion: The study revealed high-stress levels among Palestinian dentists, which were associated with sex and daily sleep hours. Furthermore, burnout was prevalent among dentists, particularly in terms of emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment, which were strongly associated with increased stress levels. The results underscore the need for targeted interventions and support mechanisms tailored to factors facing dentists, especially among females and those who receive inadequate sleep. Background: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients often experience accelerated bone turnover, leading to osteoporosis and osteopenia. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis in Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) patients using bone mineral density (BMD) measurements obtained through dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan and to explore any possible associations with clinical and biochemical factors., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 76 peritoneal dialysis patients from the dialysis center at An-Najah National University Hospital in Nablus, Palestine. We used the DEXA scan to measure BMD at the lumbar spine and hip, with values expressed as T-scores. We conducted a multivariate analysis to explore the relationship between BMD and clinical and biochemical parameters., Results: Over half (52.6%) of the PD patients had osteoporosis, with a higher prevalence observed among patients with lower BMI (p<0.001). Higher alkaline phosphatase levels were found among osteoporotic patients compared to non-osteoporotic patients (p = 0.045). Vitamin D deficiency was also prevalent in this population, affecting 86.6% of patients. No significant correlation was found between 25 vitamin D levels and BMD. No significant correlation was found between Parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and BMD., Conclusion: A notable proportion of PD patients experience reduced BMD. Our study found no correlation between vitamin D levels and BMD, but it highlighted the significant vitamin D deficiency in this population. Furthermore, our analysis indicated a positive correlation between BMI and BMD, especially in the femoral neck area. Background: The emergence of several SARS-CoV-2 variants may necessitate an annual COVID-19 booster vaccine. This study aimed to evaluate healthcare workers' (HCWs) acceptance of a COVID-19 yearly booster vaccine if recommended and its association with their attitudes and burnout levels., Methods: We used an online self-administered questionnaire to conduct a cross-sectional study of all HCWs in the West Bank and Gaza Strip of Palestine between August and September 2022. We used the Vaccination Attitudes Examination scale to assess HCWs' vaccination attitudes and the Maslach Burnout Inventory to assess work-related Burnout. In addition, we conducted logistic regression to identify factors independently associated with the acceptance of the booster vaccine., Results: The study included 919 HCWs; 52.4% were male, 46.5% were physicians, 30.0% were nurses, and 63.1% worked in hospitals. One-third of HCWs (95% CI: 30.5%-36.7%) said they would accept an annual COVID-19 booster vaccine if recommended. HCWs who are suspicious of vaccine benefits [aOR = .70; 95%CI: .65-.75] and those concerned about unforeseeable future effects [aOR = .90; 95%CI: .84-.95] are less likely to accept the booster vaccine if recommended, whereas those who receive annual influenza vaccine are more likely to get it [aOR = 2.9; 95%CI: 1.7-5.0]., Conclusion: Only about a third of HCWs would agree to receive an annual COVID-19 booster vaccine if recommended. Mistrust of the vaccine's efficacy and concerns about side effects continue to drive COVID-19 vaccine reluctance. Introduction: Waterpipe smoking (WPS) has been associated with a variety of adverse health effects, consequences, and symptoms of nicotine dependence. This study aims to determine the prevalence of WPS dependence among Palestinian university waterpipe smoking students, their normative beliefs about WPS, and their relationship to dependence., Methods: A cross-sectional study of current WPS university students at five major Palestinian universities was conducted from September to December 2022. Participants were recruited using convenient sampling, and data collection was carried out via an interviewer-administered questionnaire. We assessed students' WPS dependence using the Lebanese Waterpipe Dependence Scale. We used the Poisson regression model with robust variance to analyze factors independently associated with high WPS dependence., Results: The study included 746 current WPS university students. Results revealed a high prevalence of WPS dependence, with 69.4% (95%CI: 66.0-72.7%) exhibiting high dependence. Factors contributing to high WPS dependence included dual cigarette smoking (aPR: 1.18; 95%CI: 1.12-1.25), studying medical sciences (aPR: 1.13; 95%CI: 1.10-1.18), friends' approval of WPS (aPR: 1.25; 95%CI: 1.17-1.34), daily WPS frequency (aPR: 1.98; 95%CI: 1.39-2.23), spending more than 50% of daily allowance on WPS (aPR: 1.37; 95%CI: 1.10-1.64), and morning WPS sessions (aPR: 1.97; 95%CI: 1.31-2.27). The study highlighted the influence of social factors, such as peers' approval and perceived prevalence, on WPS dependence., Conclusions: WPS dependence is prevalent among university students, and it is associated with morning WPS, dual smoking, and increased WPS frequency. Notably, peer and cultural factors are essential primary motivators. As a result, it is critical to incorporate WPS considerations into Palestine's antismoking health promotion program. Therefore, it is vital to incorporate WPS into the Palestinian antismoking health promotion policy, and the health education of adolescents regarding the dangers of WPS should coincide with antismoking initiatives., (© 2024. Objectives: E-cigarettes have gained popularity, especially among young adults. This study aims to determine the prevalence of e-cigarette smoking, assess knowledge and attitudes and identify associated factors among Palestinian university students., Design: A cross-sectional study., Setting and Participants: The study was conducted among Palestinian university students in early 2023.A self-administered questionnaire was used to survey 1792 students from six Palestine universities in the West Bank. The questionnaire covered various aspects, including sociodemographic information, daily habits, exposure to smoking, attitudes and knowledge about e-cigarettes. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, χ 2 tests and multivariate regression analysis., Results: The study revealed a high prevalence of tobacco use (41.2%), with e-cigarette use prevalent among 19.7% of participants. Knowledge about e-cigarettes was suboptimal, with misconceptions regarding their safety and health effects. Negative attitudes towards e-cigarettes were common, and students with negative attitudes were more likely to use e-cigarettes (aOR=2.6, 95% CI: 1.9 to 3.6). Gender (aOR=2.1, 95% CI: 1.4 to 3.0), waterpipe smoking (aOR=4.5, 95% CI: 3.2 to 6.3), physical inactivity (aOR=1.4, 95% CI: 1.1 to 1.9), high coffee consumption (aOR=1.6, 95% CI: 1.1 to 2.3), spending time with friends (aOR=2.4, 95% CI: 1.5 to 3.7), having a mother who is a smoker (aOR=1.5, 95% CI: 1.1 to 2.2) and having a friend who uses e-cigarettes (aOR=1.5, 95% CI: 1.1 to 2.1) were significantly associated with e-cigarettes use., Conclusions: E-cigarette use is a growing concern among Palestinian university students. Combating this trend should include educational initiatives, social interventions and policy measures to promote informed decision-making and discourage e-cigarette use. Background: Patients taking SGLT-2 inhibitors may experience delayed peritoneal fibrosis, better ultrafiltration of water and toxins, and higher survival rates. We aimed to evaluate the possible effects of Dapagliflozin in changing the peritoneal solute transfer rate, reducing peritoneal glucose absorption, and, hence, increasing ultrafiltration., Methodology: A pilot pre-post interventional study was used to evaluate 20 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) enrolled in a one-month self-controlled study [Trial#: NCT04923295]. Inclusion criteria included being over 18, and having a Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) vintage of at least six months. All participants were classified as having high or average high transport status based on their Peritoneal Equilibrium Test with a D0/D4 > 0.39. and using at least two exchanges with 2.35% dextrose over the previous three months before enrollment., Results: Following the treatment, 13 patients had an increase in median D4/D0 from 0.26 [0.17-0.38] to 0.31 [0.23-0.40], while seven patients had a decline from 0.28 [0.17-0.38] to 0.23 [0.14-0.33]. Additionally, nine patients had a decrease in median D/P from 0.88 [0.67-0.92] to 0.81 [0.54-0.85], while 11 patients had an increase from 0.70 [0.6-0.83] to 0.76 [0.63-0.91]., Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, Dapagliflozin usage in peritoneal dialysis patients did not result in a reduction in glucose absorption across the peritoneal membrane. Additionally, Dapagliflozin was also associated with a small increase in sodium dip, a decrease in peritoneal VEGF, and a decrease in systemic IL-6 levels all of which were not statistically significant. Background: High-sensitive cardiac troponin T (h-cTnT), which serves as a marker for myocardial damage, has also been linked to adverse outcomes in asymptomatic hemodialysis patients. This study aims to explore the correlation between interleukin-6 (IL-6) and h-cTnT in asymptomatic hemodialysis patients to unravel the relationship between inflammation and cardiovascular risk., Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 81 patients was conducted from November 2022 to March 2023 at An-Najah National University Hospital in Palestine. We gathered clinical data, including comorbidities, and obtained blood samples for measuring IL-6 and h-cTnT levels. We performed statistical analyses, including correlation tests and linear regression, to assess the associations between these variables., Results: The study revealed a notable increase in both h-cTnT and IL-6 levels, and a significant correlation between the two (rho = 0.463, P<0.001) in asymptomatic hemodialysis patients. Likewise, h-cTnT levels displayed positive correlations with age (rho = 0.519, P<0.001) and negative correlations with albumin (rho = -0.297, p = 0.007) and transferrin saturation (rho = -0.227, P = 0.042). IL-6 levels exhibited correlations with age (rho = 0.422, P<0.001), albumin (rho = -0.389, P<0.001), iron (rho = -0.382, P<0.001), and transferrin saturation (rho = -0.362, P = 0.001). Notably, higher h-cTnT levels were associated with diabetes, hypertension, a history of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular accidents, older age, and male gender., Conclusion: This study underscores the significant association between the inflammatory marker IL-6 and h-cTnT in asymptomatic hemodialysis patients, suggesting that inflammation may play an essential role in the elevation of h-cTnT levels. Background and Objectives: Depression and anxiety are common mental health disorders among the elderly worldwide. In this study, we estimated the prevalence of depression and anxiety and related risk factor among elderly attending Primary Health care (PHC) centers in Palestine., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February to July 2021 with a sample size of 380 participants aged ≥60 attending PHC centers in West Bank, using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. We used the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 and the Geriatric anxiety Scale to screen for depression and anxiety, respectively. Logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of depression and anxiety., Results: The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 41.1 and 39.2%, respectively. Elderly people living in rural areas (aOR = 2.63; 95% CI: 1.72-4.20), uneducated (aOR = 2.92; 95% CI: 1.41-6.13), and without monthly income (aOR = 3.42; 95% CI: 1.52-7.61) were more likely to have depression. On the other hand, anxiety was independently associated with living in rural areas (aOR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.23-3.04) and having non-communicable diseases (aOR = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.13-3.49)., Conclusion: Depression and anxiety are common in Palestine, a developing country with a lack of elderly related services. This should be emphasized at the national and regional levels where geriatric health care services are scarce. Background: The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among adolescent students in the West Bank region of Palestine, with a particular focus on the impact of electronic device usage on their mental well-being., Methods: This cross-sectional study included a representative sample of 1,140 adolescents enrolled in governmental secondary schools. We targeted schools located in Nablus, Ramallah, and Hebron districts, which, respectively, represent the northern, central, and southern regions of the West Bank. We collected data on their sociodemographic characteristics, patterns of electronic device usage, scores from the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, all gathered through a self-administered online questionnaire. To explore the independent relationship between anxiety, depression, and various factors, we calculated odds ratios and their corresponding 95% CI using a binary logistic regression model., Results: The study revealed a prevalence of moderate to severe anxiety at 35.4% [95% CI: 32.7-38.3%] and moderate to severe depression at 23.9% [95% CI: 21.4-26.4%]. Notably, anxiety scores were significantly higher among females [OR = 3.8, 95% CI: 2.5-5.9], individuals with lower academic performance [OR = 3.4, 95% CI: 2.1-5.4], and smokers [OR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.1-3.0]. Similarly, significantly elevated depressive scores were observed among females [OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.3-3.1], those with lower academic performance [OR = 3.4, 95% CI: 2.1-5.4], and smokers [OR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.3-2.8]. Conversely, students who used electronic devices for shorter durations were less likely to experience depression [OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.32-0.76] or anxiety [OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.32-0.69]., Conclusion: Considering the alarming rates of anxiety and depression in adolescents, along with their connection to the time spent using electronic devices, we strongly recommend the creation of initiatives and support networks to alleviate this issue's impact. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Polypills, containing various combinations of medications for primary and secondary CVD prevention, have been developed to enhance medication adherence and reduce the healthcare burden of CVD. However, their effectiveness compared to usual care remains uncertain., Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of polypills on cardiovascular risk factors, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and medication adherence., Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search for large-scale randomized controlled trials and observational studies comparing the effects of polypills versus usual care on CVD risk factors and events. Outcomes included changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), lipid profiles, occurrence of MACE, and medication adherence., Results: The use of polypills led to a statistically significant yet clinically modest reduction in SBP (mean difference -1.47 mmHg, 95% CI: -2.50 to -0.44, p<0.01) and DBP (mean difference- 1.10 mmHg, 95% CI: -1.68 to -0.51, p< 0.01) compared to usual care. Polypills also showed a significant reduction in the risk of MACE (RR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.77 -0.95, p<0.01). There was a non-significant reduction in LDL and HDL levels. Adherence to medication improved by up to 17% in polypill users compared to those on usual care (p < 0.01). A multivariable metaregression analysis suggested that adherence may be the underlying factor responsible for the observed effect of the polypills on blood pressure., Conclusion: Polypills were found to significantly reduce SBP, DBP and MACE. An improvement in medication adherence was also observed among polypill users, which might be responsible for the significant reduction in SBP observed users. Background: Polypharmacy is a significant risk factor for using potentially inappropriate medication (PIM), which is using drugs with more risks than benefits, especially for elders. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of PIM using Beers Criteria, polypharmacy, and their related risk factors., Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in West Bank primary health care clinics (PHC)from December 2021 to March 2022. Data were collected from PHC clinic attendees aged 65 and above via an interviewer-administered questionnaire and a review of their medical records. We used the Beers Criteria 2019 update to identify PIM and performed a multivariable analysis to determine its associated factors., Results: The study included 421 older people (197 men and 224 women) with an average age of 73.6 years. The prevalence of polypharmacy was 75.1% (95%CI: 70.6%-79.1%), with an average of six medications dispensed per patient. On the other hand, PIM was identified among 36.8% of the study participants (CI:95%CI: 32.2%- 41.6%). Sulfonylureas were the most common (24.2%) reported PIM, followed by peripheral alpha-blockers (4.3%), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (3.1%), proton pump inhibitors (2.9%), and central nervous system medications (2.1%). Hyperpolypharmacy (> 10 drugs) [aOR = 4.1, 95%CI: 1.6-10.7], polypharmacy [aOR = 2.8, 95%CI: 1.4-5.4], and Diabetes [aOR = 3.5, 95%CI: 2.0-6.0] are the main associated factors of PIM., Conclusion: This study found that over one-third of the older people attending PHC clinics have PIM, with polypharmacy and Diabetes being the main predicting variables. Background and Aims: Variations in the branches of the abdominal aorta are relatively prevalent and can impact certain surgeries. The accurate identification and differentiation of these variations pre- and intraoperatively are crucial to avoid negative clinical sequelae. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of variations in some branches of the abdominal aorta and to identify the most frequent variants as well as any rare variants not previously classified in the existing classification systems. The study's findings may help improve the understanding and management of these variations., Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at the Department of Radiology at An-Najah National University Hospital (NNUH) and included 550 abdominal computed tomography (CT) angiographic scans for patients (51.5% males, 48.5% females) performed between January 2017 and January 2023., Results: Variations were most common in the hepatic arteries (34.7%), followed by the renal arteries (31.3%). Variations in the celiac trunk were the least frequent (9.8%). The gastro-splenic trunk (type V) was the most common celiac trunk variant. The most common hepatic artery variant was the replacement of the right hepatic artery (type III). Accessory renal arteries were more frequent on the left side and among males (P = 0.01). The celiac trunk variations had a significant association with the hepatic artery variations (P = 0.001) and the renal artery variations (P = 0.011), respectively., Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of anatomical variations in the described vessels, and it matches the results in the reported literature. Our findings also suggest the possible coexistence of variants. We have also encountered rare variants, especially in the hepatic arterial system. Some of the hepatic arterial system variants are not included in the older classification systems, calling for an extension of the old systems (Michel's and Hiatt classification systems) or replacement with the newer (CRL or EX-CRL classification systems) to account for rare variants not previously classified. Background: Due to the long waiting time for kidney transplantation, most End-Stage renal disease patients are commenced on either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Reusable fistulas have the lowest risk for death, cardiovascular events, and infections among all vascular accesses. This study aims to report the outcomes of the arteriovenous fistulas and PTFE grafts and the related predictive clinical and demographic variables., Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the charts of all hemodialysis patients between January 2017 and January 2021 at the Dialysis Center of An-Najah National University Hospital, Nablus, Palestine. Our outcomes were a primary failure, primary and secondary patency, and the related factors. Survival analysis using the Kaplan-Meier method was conducted, and the log-rank test was used to compare patency rates. The Cox proportional hazards regression model tested factors relevant to primary and secondary patency rates in univariate and multivariate analyses., Results: A total of 312 procedures were performed during the study period. Primary failure was 7.1% for AVF, 13.9% for arterio-venous graft (AVG) procedures. Peripheral arterial disease and left-sided AVF were associated with more primary failure rates. AVF, primary patency rates at 1, 2, and 3 years were 82%, 69%, and 59%, respectively, while secondary patency rates at 1, 2, and 3 years were 85%, 72%, and 63%, respectively. Factors associated with increased AVF patency in a proportional hazard model were younger age and dual antiplatelet administration., Conclusion: Our study adds further evidence that autogenous AVF has better results than prosthetic AVG in both primary and secondary patency rates as well as less primary failure rates. Purpose: In recent years, the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms had caused the resurgence of colistin use after it was previously abandoned due to its side effects, nephrotoxicity in particular. However, the specific incidence of colistin-induced nephrotoxicity varies in reports with different populations. This study aims to assess the incidence of colistin-associated nephrotoxicity and the associated risk factors., Patients and Methods: This study was on 178 patients who received colistin for more than 48 hours during the years 2019-2022, who were followed up for 14 days after the initiation of colistin, and demographic and clinical data were gained from medical reports. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between nephrotoxicity and study variables., Results: The incidence of nephrotoxicity was 44.9% (95% confidence interval (CI); 37% to 53%), and the overall mortality was 33%, with a significantly higher level among patients with nephrotoxicity. The significant risk factors for nephrotoxicity after adjustment were; higher weights (OR = 1.1, 95% CI; 0.03-1.2), P-value: 0.006, and the combination with carbapenem showed a significant protective effect (OR = 0.09, 95% CI; 0.01-0.8), P-value: 0.03. The severity, according to KDIGO classification, was stage 1 (47%), stage 2 (21%), and stage 3 (31%). Higher stages had earlier onset acute kidney injury, a lower percentage of returning to baseline, and exposure to a higher colistin dose., Conclusion: Colistin-induced nephrotoxicity was a frequent issue associated with higher weights, mitigated by the combination with carbapenems. Background: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial therapy knowledge, attitudes, and practices of primary care physicians in the West Bank and Gaza., Methods: Between January and April 2021, this cross-sectional survey was conducted. A link to the online survey was sent via confidential email lists to 336 primary care physicians who treated patients in Ministry of Health clinics. The survey questions scoring system was devised in order to evaluate the physicians' practice, knowledge, and attitudes. Our scoring system identified favorable (good) and unfavorable (average and poor) antibiotic practices. In addition to independent t -test, the Chi-square test was used to compare the two groups of physicians' knowledge, attitudes, and practices with their background characteristics. A multivariate analysis was performed to identify potential confounding variables having significant relationships., Results: Of the 336 distributed questionnaires, 316 were completed, with a response rate of 94%. More than half (54.7%) were males, half (51.6%) were between 30 and 45 years of age, and most were general practitioners (74.1%). The overall good knowledge and attitude scores were 125 (39.6%) and 194 (61.4%), respectively. More than half (58.2%) had good antibiotic prescription practices. Females reported significantly more favorable practices than males, as did family medicine specialists compared with general practitioners. Finally, knowledge about antibiotic prescriptions had a substantial impact on changing their practices. However, physicians' attitudes toward antibiotic prescriptions did not have a significant role in shaping their practices., Conclusion: Overuse of antibiotics is a significant health issue in Palestine and worldwide. Most physicians know that improper antibiotic usage can cause antimicrobial resistance. More than two-thirds avoided needless antimicrobial prescriptions. In practicing antimicrobial stewardship, most prescribed fewer antibiotics and did not prescribe because of patient pressure. Current studies about the long-term effects of COVID-19 show a wide range of symptoms. This prospective cohort study aimed to find the incidence of long-COVID symptoms and the associated risk factors. We followed 669 confirmed COVID-19 patients. Sociodemographic and clinical data were extracted from medical records and collected via semi-structured telephone interviews on days 10, 30, 60, and 90. The incidence of long-COVID symptoms was 41.6% (95% CI 37.8-45.4%). Females [aOR = 1.5 (95% CI 1.1-2.3)], the elderly [aOR = 4.9 (95% CI 2.0-11.3)], and those who required hospitalization [aOR = 5.0 (95% CI 1.3-3.7)] were at a higher risk of developing long-COVID. Patients with dyspnea at day 10 [aOR: 2.4 (95% CI 1.6-3.7] and fatigue at day 60 [aOR: 3.1 (95% CI 1.5-6.3] were also at risk. While non-vaccinated patients were almost seven times more likely to report long-COVID symptoms than vaccinated patients [aOR: 6.9 (95% CI 4.2-11.3)]. In conclusion, long-COVID was common among COVID-19 patients, with higher rates among females, older age groups, hospitalized patients, and those with dyspnea and fatigue, while vaccination provided protection. Background: Uncertainty about vaccination among nurses are major barriers to managing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic worldwide., Purpose: To explore nurseś perceptions about receiving the SARS CoV-2 vaccine to inform the upcoming Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH) vaccination efforts., Methods: Four focus groups were conducted with nurses between January 18 and 30, 2021, before MOH launched vaccinations in Palestine. Participants working in government and private facilities were invited to participate and completed an online or paper form to provide demographics, review the study purpose, and give consent. Meetings were facilitated in Arabic either online via the Zoom platform or face-to-face using the same interview guide. Transcripts were translated into English and coded using a template analysis approach., Results: Forty-six nurses, with a median age of 29.5y (range, 22-57) from across Palestine participated. Three major themes emerged: uncertainty, trust, and the knowledge needed to move forward. Uncertainty related to the evolving nature of COVID-19, the rapidity of vaccine development, the types and timing of available vaccines. The need for trusted experts to share scientific information about the vaccines to counteract the misinformation in social media. Moreover, reliable vaccine information may help vaccine-hesitant nurses move to vaccine-acceptors and to convince others, including their patients., Conclusion: The negative perception of nurses towards vaccines is problematic in Palestine and uncertainty about which vaccine(s) will be available adds to the lack of education and mass-media misinformation. Other countries with vaccination efforts that are not wholly planned or implemented and may be struggling with similar concerns .

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the association between renal impairment and polypharmacy among older Palestinian patients visiting primary healthcare centers and to examine potentially inappropriate medications among older patients., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among PHC clinic attendees aged 65 and older. We used medical records and an interviewer-administered questionnaire for data collection. Participants with eGFR less than 60mls/min/1.73 m2 were categorized as renal impaired; we then calculated the prevalence of renal impairment and used Poisson multivariable regression model with robust variance to identify associated factors. Beer's criteria and literature reviews were used to evaluate renal impairment patients' medication and to determine the frequency of PIPs., Results: The study included 421 participants (224 female, 197 male), and 66.3% were between the ages of 65 and 75. The prevalence of renal impairment was 30.2% (95%CI: 25.8-34.6%). Polypharmacy [aPR = 2.7, 95%CI: 1.7-4.3], stroke [aPR = 2.6, 95%CI: 1.1-2.3], females [aPR = 1.7, 95%CI: 1.2-2.5], and older patients over the age of 80 [aPR = 2.4, 95%CI: 1.6-3.5] were the main factors associated with renal impairment. RAAS (54.3%), metformin (39.3%), and sulfonylurea (20.4%) were the most frequently reported PIP in renal impairment patients., Conclusion: This study demonstrates a relationship between polypharmacy and renal impairment. Some people with renal impairment receive drugs that those with kidney illness should avoid or use with caution. Purpose: to determine COVID-19 vaccination coverage among pregnant women and investigate the factors affecting vaccine uptake., Design: Analytical cross-sectional study., Setting: Palestinian health care facilities. Between October and November 2021 - eight months after the country's first COVID-19 vaccination., Sample: We needed 820 people to estimate vaccination coverage among pregnant women with a precision rate of 3%. Therefore, we invited 950 pregnant Palestinian women who were eligible and had a response rate of 91.6%., Measures: An interviewer-administered questionnaire examined vaccination uptake, attitudes, and concerns about the COVID-19 vaccine., Analysis: Bivariable and multivariable analysis using SPSS., Results: vaccination uptake was reported by 219 pregnant women [25.5%, 95% CI: 22.6% -28.5%]. Knowledge (aOR=2.0; 95% CI: 1.2-3.1), perceived benefits (aOR=1.1; 95% CI: 1.06-1.16), employment (aOR=5; 95% CI: 3.1-8.1), and underlying medical condition (aOR=2.1; 95% CI: 1.1-4.1) predicted uptake. Reporting vaccine barriers reduces vaccine uptake (aOR=.92; 95% CI: .89-95)., Conclusions: Pregnant women's COVID-19 vaccination rates are low. Concerns regarding the COVID-19 vaccine for infants affected their decision. COVID-19 vaccination regulations and legislative nudges drove maternal vaccination. Vaccine fears and misconceptions among pregnant women should be addressed.

Introduction: Kidney failure is rapidly rising in Palestine, as the number of patients receiving maintenance dialysis has quadrupled in the last 15 years. In this study, we share an overview of our experience growing a peritoneal dialysis (PD) program from zero to 178 patients in 5 years at An-Najah National University Hospital in Palestine, presenting some challenges and ways to overcome them., Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study of patients treated with PD from November 2016 to December 2021. Demographic and clinical data were obtained for each patient. In addition, PD discontinuation, peritonitis, and mortality rates were calculated and presented as the primary patient outcomes., Results: A total of 158 patients were eligible for the study. The mean age was 51.8 ± 16.4 years, and 53.8% of patients were male. Diabetic nephropathy was the most common cause of kidney failure. 63 episodes of peritonitis were diagnosed in 48 patients (30.4%) for a rate of 1 episode/ 38.2 patient-months (0.31 episodes/ patient-years). 20 patients had their PD treatment discontinued, mainly due to psychosocial reasons and infectious and mechanical complications. Death was the fate of 27 patients, with cardiovascular disease and COVID-19 being the two main causes., Conclusion: The outcomes of this experience proved favorable and showed that PD could serve as a viable option for kidney failure patients in Palestine. This cross-sectional study aims to find the prevalence of chronic pain and its correlation with the quality of life and vitamin D levels among hemodialysis patients in Palestine. We used the brief pain inventory, the medical outcomes study 36-item short-form health survey, and Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D to assess chronic pain, quality of life, and vitamin D levels, respectively. The study included 200 patients, 38.1% (95% confidence interval 31.3-45.4%) of whom had chronic pain, and 77.7% (95% confidence interval 71.0-83.4%) had deficient Vitamin D levels. Quality of life scores were generally low, with the lowest in role emotional and physical functioning. Sex, comorbidities, and vitamin D level significantly correlate with pain severity. Employment, number of comorbidities, pain severity, and albumin level are significantly associated with the Physical component of quality of life. On the other hand, employment and pain severity are significantly related to the mental component of quality of life. In conclusion, low vitamin D levels, chronic pain, and low quality of life scores are common among hemodialysis patients. In addition, vitamin D is negatively correlated with pain severity. Therefore, healthcare workers should assess and manage hemodialysis patients' chronic pain to improve their quality of life and reduce suffering., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Objectives: This scoping review is to investigate the existing literature on the mental health of Healthcare workers, including stress or distress, anxiety, depression, burnout, insomnia, and fear or phobia within the different countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region (EMR) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We systematically searched to consolidate studies across EMR countries regarding the mental health morbidity studied, the scales, and the methodology used. The review focused on peer-reviewed academic literature published from March 2020 to November 2021. Results: One hundred sixty-seven articles were included in the review. Most publications came from lower-middle-income countries such as Iran, Pakistan, and Egypt. Most of the literature was specific to Stress/Distress ( n = 94), followed by anxiety ( n = 93), depression ( n = 66), burnout ( n = 27), insomnia ( n = 20), and fear/phobia ( n = 12). Conclusion: Fear, phobia, and insomnia have all been examined extensively worldwide, yet they were among the Eastern Mediterranean region's least explored outcomes. Patients on maintenance dialysis therapy are especially vulnerable to COVID-19 and its complications. This study aimed to assess the incidence, epidemiological characteristics, and mortality rate of COVID-19 among maintenance dialysis patients. This retrospective observational chart review study included 548 patients from all dialysis units in the West Bank of Palestine who acquired COVID-19 between 5 March 2020, and 11 August 2021. We collected data on patients' demographics, clinical features, and outcomes. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess independent risk factors for COVID-19-related mortality. The incidence of COVID-19 among maintenance dialysis patients was 35.3%, as 548 out of 1554 patients have tested positive during the study period. Patients on haemodialysis were three times riskier to get infected than those on peritoneal dialysis (37% vs 11.3%). Half (50.2%) of infected patients required hospitalisation, and 24.5% were admitted to an intensive care unit, while the mortality rate stood at 26.8%. Old age, male sex, central venous catheter use, comorbid diabetes, smoking, and having an RH negative blood group type were determined to be significantly associated with increased risk of mortality. In conclusion, the incidence of COVID-19 among Palestinian maintenance dialysis patients was notably high, especially among haemodialysis patients. High rates of hospitalisation, ICU admission, intubation and death were observed, and predictive factors for COVID-19-related mortality were identified. Therefore, the implementation of strict infection control measures and promotion of home dialysis are warranted to reduce the infection rate.KEY MESSAGESThe incidence of COVID-19 among Palestinian maintenance dialysis patients was notably high; more than one-third of the total dialysis population acquired COVID-19, with haemodialysis patients being three times more likely to get infected compared to their peritoneal dialysis counterparts.The mortality rate among maintenance dialysis patients was 26.8%, more than 25 times higher than that of the general population. The risk of mortality was significantly increased with age, male sex, smoking, diabetes, and having central venous catheter as vascular access for haemodialysis.Strict infection control measures, as well as the promotion of home dialysis, are necessary to reduce the risk of infection.

Tinnitus is a common complaint with potentially negative impact on quality of life. Prevalence of tinnitus ranges from 5 to 43% worldwide. This variation could be due to the heterogeneity of tinnitus assessment. This has limited the progress in understanding tinnitus. Therefore, we employed a standardized and a validated assessment method to determine the prevalence and related risk factors of tinnitus among Palestinians for the first time. This is a cross-sectional study in which we questioned a representative sample of 618 subjects in one-to-one interviews. The prevalence of any tinnitus was 30.6% among adult Palestinians. Participants from the oldest age group were almost five times more likely to have tinnitus. Moreover, participants with head and neck pain syndrome, severe hearing impairment, sleeping disorders or frequent complaints of vertigo were approximately two times more likely to have tinnitus. Our study provides novel information regarding tinnitus in Palestine and improves our understanding of tinnitus. This will improve the diagnosis and consequently will contribute in reducing the prevalence and perhaps in preventing tinnitus. Background/aim: Hypomagnesaemia has been shown to have a significant impact on both glycaemic control and diabetes complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. This study aims to assess the prevalence of hypomagnesaemia in T2DM patients and find the association between serum magnesium levels and outcomes relevant to glycaemic control and diabetic complications in primary care unit., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted and included 373 patients (222 males and 151 females) from primary care unit. Serum magnesium levels were measured by the colorimetric endpoint method using the Cobas C501 system. Hypomagnesaemia was determined to be a serum magnesium level <1.6 mg/dL. In addition, the following data was also obtained: patients' characteristics, anthropometric measurements, smoking status, HbA1c, comorbidities and therapeutic management., Results: Patients' mean age was 56.2 ± 10.8 years, 24.6% were smokers, and most were overweight or obese. About 60% have a history of hypertension, and the majority have had diabetes for more than 10 years. Their mean HbA1c level was 8.5 ± 2%. The prevalence of hypomagnesaemia was 11% (95% CI: 8%-14.6%). It was found to be significantly higher among females (adjusted OR: 2.7, 95%CI: 1.2%-5.8%), patients with HbA1c ≥8% (adjusted OR: 2.4, 95%CI: 1.1%-5.5%) and patients with a history of diabetic retinopathy (adjusted OR: 2.7, 95%CI: 1.1%-7.1%)., Conclusion: The study showed that hypomagnesaemia is more prevalent in females and is associated with diabetic retinopathy and poor glycaemic control. This study aims to explore pregnant women's attitudes to COVID-19 vaccination and determinants of vaccine acceptance. We conducted a cross-sectional study among pregnant women attending PHC clinics and hospitals in the West-bank of Palestine. We used an interviewer-administered questionnaire based on Health Belief Model. The study's primary outcome was COVID-19 vaccination acceptance. We used the Chi-square test to compare those who accepted the vaccine versus those who refused it and conducted binary logistic regression to explore independent determinants of vaccination acceptance. Among the 728 pregnant women who took part in the study, 20.7 percent showed positive attitudes (acceptance) toward COVID-19 vaccination. Employment (aOR 4.0; 95 percentCI: 2.2-7.3), a history of COVID-19 (aOR 1.9; 95 percentCI: 1.2-3.1), and having a relative who died from COVID-19 (aOR 2.3; 95 percentCI: 1.2-4.7) increased the likelihood of vaccine acceptance, as did vaccine perceived effectiveness (aOR 1.9; 95 percentCI: 1.2-3.2) and perceived protection from severe disease (aOR 2.0; 95 percentCI: 1.2-3.5). On the other hand, perceived limited access (aOR 0.540; 95 percentCI: 0.31-0.87) and perceived harm to the baby (aOR 0.346; 95 percentCI 0.22-0.54) remained the main barriers toward vaccine acceptance. In conclusion, pregnant women's acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine is unsatisfactory. Concerns about its effect on unborn babies were major barriers to vaccination.

Purpose: Due to geopolitical and socioeconomic challenges, the Family Medicine (FM) speciality in Palestine is in early stages of development. Volunteer British General Practitioner (BGP) trainers worked with FM faculty to develop an online tutorial program (OTP) and a novel evaluation framework E-QUaL (Evaluation-Quality, Utilization and Learning) to enhance residents' patient-centered communication and clinical skills., Materials and Methods: Three OTP cycles were facilitated and evaluated at An Najah National University (ANNU) in Palestine between 2017-2020. Qualitative data were collected during focus groups and online chats and analysed., Results and Conclusions: The development and joint facilitation of the OTP developed faculty skills and enhanced clinically oriented education. The collaborative (BGPs and ANNU faculty) approach and the use of the EQUaL framework helped to identify and address strengths and opportunities as well as the challenges and threats of the educational content and the virtual learning format with each iteration. The COVID pandemic provided a new and inexpensive platform which improved training quality. Issues such as the volunteer nature of BGPs, internet instability, and differing cultural approaches and expectations between physicians and patients were addressed in a continuous quality improvement approach and continues today. This may be a useful model in other low resourced settings.

Background: In our clinical practice, conventional radial access has been employed routinely for coronary procedures. The distal radial artery (DRA) access site has recently emerged as a novel technique in cardiac procedures., Objectives: This study compares distal radial access to standard forearm radial access (FRA) in terms of feasibility, outcomes, and complications., Method: This prospective, randomized trial was conducted at a single center. The patients were chosen from An-Najah National University Hospital's catheterization laboratory between December 2019 and November 2020. A total of 209 patients were randomized into two groups: DRA group ( n  = 104) and FRA group ( n  = 105)., Results: Access was successful in 98% of patients in both the groups. The DRA group had a longer puncture duration and a higher number of attempts (duration: 56.6 ± 61.1 s DRA vs. 20.0 ± 18.4 s FRA, p < 0.001, attempts: 1.9 ± 1.3 DRA vs. 1.2 ± 0.60 FRA, p < 0.001). Puncture-associated pain was greater in the DRA group (4 ± 2.2 DRA vs. 3 ± 2.1 FRA, p =0.001). There were two radial artery occlusions in the FRA group and none in the DRA group ( p =0.139). Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was performed in 26% of the DRA group and 37.1% of the FRA group. The DRA group had significantly shorter procedure times ( p =0.006), fluoroscopy times ( p =0.002), and hemostasis times ( p =0.002). Over time, the learning curve demonstrated improved puncture duration and a decrease in the number of puncture attempts., Conclusions: DRA is a safe and practical alternative to FRA for coronary angiography and intervention. Background: In response to this extraordinary outbreak, many countries and companies rush to develop an effective vaccine, authorize, and deliver it to all people across the world. Despite these extensive efforts, curbing this pandemic relies highly upon vaccination coverage. This study aimed to determine SARS-COV-2 vaccine uptake among Palestinian healthcare workers, the factors that influence vaccination uptake, and the motivators and barriers to vaccination., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online anonymous self-administered questionnaire during April and May 2021, after the Palestinian Ministry of Health launched the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. The questionnaire collected socio-demographic characteristics, vaccination attitude and vaccination uptake status, and motivators and barriers towards vaccination. In addition, multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify the influencing factors of vaccination uptake., Results: The study included 1018 participants from different professions, including 560 (55.0%) females. Of the participants, 677 (66.5%; 95% CI: 63.5-69.4%) received the vaccine. Higher uptake was observed among males (aOR = 1.5; 95 %CI: 1.1-2.1), single HCWs (aOR = 1.3; 95 %CI: 1.1-1.8), HCWs working in the non-governmental sector (aOR = 1.6; 95 %CI: 1.2-2.4), higher monthly income (aOR = 1.9; 95 %CI: 1.4-2.8) and smoking (aOR = 1.5; 95 %CI: 1.1-3.5). The lower level of negative vaccination attitudes predicted higher intake; mistrust of vaccine belief (aOR = 1.6; 95 %CI: 1.4-1.7) and worries over unforeseen future effects (aOR = 1.2; 95 %CI: 1.1-1.3)., Conclusion: In conclusion, the COVID-19 vaccination uptake was comparable to other studies worldwide but still needs to be improved, especially in the context of this ongoing global pandemic. Background: Digital health interventions have been shown to improve data quality and health services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Nonetheless, in LMICs, systematic assessments of time saved with the use of digital tools are rare. We ran a set of cluster-randomized controlled trials as part of the implementation of a digital maternal and child health registry (eRegistry) in the West Bank, Palestine., Objective: In the eRegTime study, we compared time spent on health information management in clinics that use the eRegistry versus the existing paper-based documentation system., Methods: Intervention (eRegistry) and control (paper documentation) arms were defined by a stratified random subsample of primary health care clinics from the concurrent eRegQual trial. We used time-motion methodology to collect data on antenatal care service provision. Four observers used handheld tablets to record time-use data during one working day per clinic. We estimated relative time spent on health information management for booking and follow-up visits and on client care using mixed-effects linear regression., Results: In total, 22 of the 24 included clinics (12 intervention, 10 control) contributed data; no antenatal care visits occurred in the other two clinics during the study period. A total of 123 and 118 consultations of new pregnancy registrations and follow-up antenatal care visits were observed in the intervention and control groups, respectively. Average time spent on health information management for follow-up antenatal care visits in eRegistry clinics was 5.72 minutes versus 8.10 minutes in control clinics (adjusted relative time 0.69, 95% CI 0.60-0.79; P<.001), and 15.26 minutes versus 18.91 minutes (adjusted relative time 0.96, 95% CI 0.61-1.50; P=.85) for booking visits. The average time spent on documentation, a subcategory of health information management, was 5.50 minutes in eRegistry clinics versus 8.48 minutes in control clinics (adjusted relative time 0.68, 95% CI 0.56-0.83; P<.001). While the average time spent on client care was 5.01 minutes in eRegistry clinics versus 4.91 minutes in control clinics, some uncertainty remains, and the CI was consistent with eRegistry clinics using less, the same, or more time on client care compared to those that use paper (adjusted relative time 0.85, 95% CI 0.64-1.13; P=.27)., Conclusions: The eRegistry captures digital data at point of care during client consultations and generates automated routine reports based on the clinical data entered. Markedly less time (plausibly a saving of at least 18%) was spent on health information management in eRegistry clinics compared to those that use paper-based documentation. This is likely explained by the fact that the eRegistry requires lesser repetitive documentation work than paper-based systems. Background: In the light of recent years, an increase in the number of life-threatening infections due to various fungi has been observed, especially in tertiary care centres. With Amphotericin B labelled as the first choice in treating these infections, one of its common side effects, nephrotoxicity, along with hypokalemia, were studied to determine the epidemiology, risk factors, and protective measures., Methodology: The study was a retrospective observational chart review study in which patients were receiving conventional Amphotericin B in two tertiary hospitals in Palestine from January 2018 to December 2020 were evaluated for the development of hypokalemia and nephrotoxicity; according to the KDIGO criteria. A total of 117 patients were included in the study. Patients who have received the drug intermittently, in fewer than two doses, through non-IV routes and patients under the age of 12 were excluded. The data collected included, but were not limited to, age, gender, comorbidities, Amphotericin B treatment details, medications, COVID-19 status, risk factors, and hypothesized protective measures., Results: The incidence of conventional Amphotericin B nephrotoxicity and hypokalemia was 46% and 33%, respectively. With a roughly equal representation of both genders and a median age of 52 years in a range of 13-89. No association between the variables and the development of nephrotoxicity was found. However, a 3.4 increased risk (p-value = 0.01) of developing hypokalemia in females compared to males was observed., Conclusion: Our research has shown a relatively lower yet consistent, incidence of conventional amphotericin B nephrotoxicity and hypokalemia compared to literature with gender being a risk factor for developing hypokalemia., (© 2022. Introduction: Despite discovery of effective vaccines, healthy behaviors and good practices remain the cornerstone of the prevention and control of COVID-19 and the mitigation of adverse impacts. This study aimed to assess the Palestinian population's COVID-19 prevention measures and correlate them with their knowledge, attitude, and background characteristics., Methodology: A cross-sectional study was performed between Dec 2020 and Jan 2021 on 1,451 respondents ≥18 years via an interviewer-administered questionnaire, comprising 35 questions assessing knowledge, attitude, and practice toward COVID-19. Data were analyzed using univariate and multivariable regression analyses., Results: Of the 1,451 respondents, 768 were females (52.9%), the mean age was 32.8 ± 13.7 years, and 161 (11.1%) reported having been infected with the coronavirus. Overall, 38.7% (95%CI: 36.2-41.2%), 23.4% (95%CI: 21.3-25.7%), and 50.2% (95%CI: 47.6-52.9%) reported good knowledge, attitude, and practice, respectively. Respondents over 50 [aOR 1.9, 95%CI: 1.3-2.8], females [aOR 1.7, 95%CI: 1.4-2.2], and people who had COVID-19 infection [aOR1.7, 95%CI: 1.2-2.5] were more likely to report good practice. Participants with good attitude were 5. times more likely to report good practice than those with poor attitude [p-value < 0.001, aOR 5.7, 95%CI: 3.9-8.4]., Conclusions: The knowledge, attitude, and practice of the participants are no ideal. A positive attitude is a crucial predictor of good practices for COVID-19 prevention and control. Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) remains a critical issue for cancer patients despite recent treatment improvements. This study aimed to assess the incidence of AKI in cancer patients and its related risk factors., Methods: A Retrospective cohort study was conducted at tertiary hospitals in the period 2016-2018. A data abstraction sheet was used to collect related variables from patients' records. During admission, the incidence of AKI was assessed using creatinine measurements. RIFLE criteria were used to classify it into five categories of severity: risk, injury, failure, loss, and end-stage renal disease., Results: Using RIFLE (Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss, and End-stage renal disease) criteria, 6.9% of admissions were complicated with AKI. The severity of these fell into the categories of risk, injury, and failure, 3.3%, 1.7%, and 1.9%, respectively. In the multivariate model, the odds for developing AKI was significantly higher for patients with congestive heart failure (AOR = 17.1, 95% CI 1.7-80.1), chronic kidney disease (adjusted OR = 6.8, 95% CI 1.4-32.2 ( P value 0.017)), sepsis (AOR = 4.4, 95% CI 1.9-10.1), hypercalcemia (AOR = 8.4, 95% CI 1.3-46.1), and admission to the ICU (AOR = 5.8, 95% CI 2.1-16.2). In addition, the mortality rate was nearly seven times higher for patients complicated by AKI (relative risk = 7.6, 95% CI 3.2-18.2)., Conclusion: AKI was significantly associated with congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, sepsis, ICU admission, and hypercalcemia in cancer patients, resulting in poorer outcomes and higher mortality rates. Background: Headache is one of the most disturbing complaints worldwide, negatively impacting social and regular life activities. In the background of stressful life in medical schools, adding to the stressful situation in Palestine, a developing country under occupation, this study investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of migraines and tension- type headaches among medical students from the Palestinian Universities in West Bank and Gaza., Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted on all Palestinian Medical Students. Students were diagnosed based on ICHD-3 criteria. Demographic characteristics were compared by gender for each type of headache. Frequency, percentage, and mean ± SD. Pearson's chi-squared test, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA were used where needed. P-value < 0.05 was considered significant., Results: The study included 806 medical students; 476 (59.0%) of them were female. TTH and migraine's prevalence was 59.8 and 22%, respectively, with a higher prevalence among basic year students. The female to male ratio was 1:0.6 for both types of headaches. Sleep deprivation, physical activities, and altered sleep patterns were reported as the top triggering factors., Conclusions: The results demonstrate that the prevalence of both subtypes' primary headache is high among Palestinian medical students, with a higher prevalence among basic year students. Background: Breast cancer affects women's lives worldwide, yet early detection is an effective strategy for reducing mortality. The participation of women in mammography screening is linked to their knowledge, attitudes and perceived barriers., Objectives: Our study aims to assess mammography screening uptake and barriers among women attending primary healthcare centres (PHCs) in northern Palestine., Methods: Using an interviewer administered questionnaire, we used a cross-sectional study design to determine mammography screening uptake, knowledge and barriers among 357 women attending PHCs in Northern Palestine between December 2018 and March 2019., Results: The mean age was 50 years. The majority (69.2%) were considered to have adequate knowledge about breast cancer and mammography screening. Mammography screening uptake among the participants was 37%. Almost 85% of the women had a positive attitude towards breastfeeding as a prophylaxis factor against breast cancer, while the most frequent barrier to mammography screening was that the participants believed they did not have any symptoms (28.6%), followed by 22.1% of them who did not want to know if they had breast cancer., Conclusion: The findings of this study highlighted the low mammography uptake among Palestinian women despite the adequate knowledge of those women and the fully accessible and free screening programme. Hence, interventional strategies should be implemented at several levels to enhance mammogram uptake.

Background University students are at a higher risk of using cognitive enhancers and psychoactive substances. Depression is associated with a noticeable decline in academic performance and can increase the risk of substance use. Due to sociopolitical issues, the use of cognitive enhancers and psychoactive substances among Palestinians has spread in the last decade. However, depression among tobacco and caffeine users remains underrecognized and neglected. Methodology A self-administrated questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory were used to assess the association of depression and the use of cognitive enhancers and psychoactive substances among university students at An-Najah National University in 2020. Results The response rate to the questionnaires was 78.8% (n = 1,051; 38.8% males, 61.2% females). The overall prevalence of depression was high (30.6% males, 34.7% females). The prevalence of cigarette smoking (39.2% males, 3.9% females), waterpipe smoking (43.1% males, 21.6% females), energy drink consumption (59.6% males, 29.7% females), coffee consumption (85.5% for each gender), tea consumption, and chocolate consumption was high, with significant differences in accordance to gender and academic fields. The multinomial logistic regression results revealed that cigarette smokers were more likely to have a higher risk of severe (odds ratio [OR] = 4.5, p = 0.001), moderate (OR = 3.27, p < 0.001), and mild depression (OR = 2.24, p = 0.002) than non-smokers. Severe depression was less prevalent among medical students than health sciences and non-medical students (OR = 0.215, p = 0.015). Moreover, males were less likely to have moderate (OR = 0.5, p = 0.012) and mild (OR = 0.48, p = 0.001) depression than females. Conclusions Overall, the results of this study revealed the high prevalence of depression and the detrimental effects of smoking on students. Moreover, the findings suggest the urgent need to address depression and risk factors among Palestinian university students by educating them about mental health, identifying high-risk students, and offering easily accessible psychological help. Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are the principal causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. The maternal morbidity and mortality burden for Palestinian women is relatively high, suggesting a substandard quality of care. Therefore, an early diagnosis of GDM and gestational hypertension (GH) can improve prenatal care for pregnant women and improve pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies demonstrated that elevated Hb levels in the first trimester indicate possible pregnancy complications and should not only be considered as good iron status. However, ethnic differences could play a role in determining the magnitude of the association. We hypothesized that high Hb levels (≥12.5 g/dl) in the first trimester (6-13 gestational weeks, GW) are associated with increased risk of fasting blood sugar (FBS) ≥126 mg/dl, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥140 mmHg, and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥90 mmHg among pregnant Palestinian women visiting prenatal clinics in Palestine., Methods: Medical records (N=5263) were reviewed for singleton pregnancies who had their first maternity care clinic visit (6-13 GW) at primary healthcare centers of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the north of the West Bank in 2018 and 2019. Women were excluded if they had FBS ≥92 mg/dl, SBP ≥140 mmHg, DBP ≥90 mmHg, ultrasound-based gestational age >13 weeks, or who were previously diagnosed with diabetes mellites, GDM, hypertension, GH, taking drugs for these conditions, or were smoking during pregnancy. Hb levels in g/dl were divided to low (<11.0), normal (11-12.49), and high (≥12.5). The associations between high hemoglobin levels and pregnancy complications in pregnant women were assessed by calculating the odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using logistic regression. P-values of <0.05 were considered significant., Results: The final number of eligible records was 2565. Pregnant women with high Hb levels in the first trimester were at higher risk of high FBS (≥126 mg/dl; OR=2.99, 95%CI, [1.675-5.368]) and high systolic blood pressure (≥140 mmHg; OR=3.048, 95%CI, [1.252-7.421]) at 24 GW. Gravidity was significantly associated with decreased risk of high FBS (OR=0.838, 95%CI [0.704-0.991])., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that Hb level at registration could be utilized in predicting the risk of GDM and HP among Palestinian women who never had a previous history of these conditions. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) total antibodies in the north, middle, and south regions of West Bank and the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 specific antibodies (IgA, IgM, and IgG) in the Palestinian population. This was a cross-sectional study. The serological and epidemiological data of 1269 persons were assessed. Participants were selected randomly among primary health care center attendees in Palestine between November 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. All serum samples were tested for total antibodies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test. IgM, IgG, and IgA-specific antibody titers were measured using ELISA. The overall prevalence (with 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) of SARS-CoV-2 total antibodies and specific antibodies were estimated. A multivariate regression model was used to assess the predictive factors for SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies. The overall seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was 24·0% (95% CI, 21·7%-26·5%). Seroprevalence was significantly higher among people living in south West Bank (adjusted Odds ratio [aOR], 2·22; 95% CI: 1·58-3·11), people who had COVID-19 symptoms (aOR, 3·92; 95% CI, 2·83-5·43), people with a COVID-19 contact history (aOR, 1·44; 95% CI, 1·03-2·03), patients with hypertension (aOR, 1·57; 95% CI, 1·06-2·33), and non-smokers (aOR, 0·47; 95% CI, 0·31-0·72). A total of 171 blood samples from SARS-CoV-2-positive patients were chosen at random for additional serological testing. Specific IgM, IgG, and IgA antibodies were positive in 14·0% (95% CI, 9·2%-20·2%), 88·3% (82·5%-92·7%), and 42·1% (34·6%-59·9%) of the samples, respectively. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were common among PHC center attendees and were significantly associated to sex, smoking, and COVID-19 contact history. Introduction: Due to their stressful lives, Palestinian refugees are prone to use cognitive enhancers (CE) and psychostimulant substances (PS). Recognising health problems associated with CE/PS use can indicate how preventive programs should be directed towards adolescents. Unfortunately, research has not thoroughly investigated the health problems related to tobacco and caffeine products, the most socially acceptable CE/PS among Palestinian refugee adolescents., Methodology: In 2021, schoolchildren from five Palestinian refugee camps (N=271) aged 12-<16 years agreed to give blood samples and to be interviewed to address the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and tobacco smoking, coffee, energy drinks (ED), black tea, and chocolate consumption. MetS was diagnosed based on International Diabetic Federation Criteria. To address the association, we used binary logistic regression models adjusted to age, gender, BMI, and central obesity., Results: The prevalence of MetS was [17 (6.3%)]; (7.4%) in males, (5.1%) in females. The prevalence of substance use was as follows: ED [163 (48.9%)], coffee [255 (76.6%)], black tea [295 (89.1%)], cigarette [35 (10.5%)], waterpipe [59 (17.7%)], and chocolate [309 (93.6%)], with male predominance. Cigarette smokers have increased central obesity (p-value=0.024), and decreased HDL-cholesterol (p-value=0.015) than non-smokers. Similar results were observed for waterpipe smokers besides the increased levels of triglycerides (p-value=0.01). ED consumers have increased central obesity (p-value=0.03) and fast blood sugar (p-value=0.003) than non-consumers. Chocolate consumers have decreased central obesity (p-value=0.008) and increased HDL levels (p-value=0.04) than non-consumers. ED consumers were significantly at higher risk of MetS (OR=9.97, p-value=0.019) than non-consumers and chocolate consumers were at lower risk of MetS (OR=0.14, p-value=0.046) than non-consumers. Waterpipe smokers were at a higher risk of having increased plasma triglycerides than non-consumers (OR=3.4, p-value=0.03)., Conclusion: The high prevalence of ED consumption and waterpipe smoking in Palestinian refugee adolescents is problematic. Objective: To measure COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and related factors to undercover nurses' concerns and fears., Design: A cross-sectional study., Sample: The study included 639 nurses; 83% were women and 80% under 50 years., Measurement: A self-administered questionnaire was used. It included demographic characteristics, COVID-19-related fears and concerns, COVID-19 vaccine perceived benefits, and intention toward getting the vaccine., Results: Forty percent of the nurses planned to get the vaccine when available, 41% would take it later when adequate protection and safety were presented, and 18% would never take it. Significant factors associated with vaccination intention were as follows: age (adjusted OR 1.42, 95% CI: 1.02-1.99); lack of knowledge about the vaccine (adjusted OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.81-3.8); concern about long-term side effects (adjusted OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.4-2.9); fear of injection (adjusted OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.04-2.13); natural immunity preference (adjusted OR 5.8, 95% CI 4.5-8.3); media misrepresentation (adjusted OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.2-2.4); and getting COVID-19 from the vaccine (adjusted OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.1-2.1)., Conclusion: COVID-19 vaccine safety and side-effects concerns impact nurses' intentions to accept the vaccine and may result in low acceptance rates. Introduction: About 14% of COVID-19 patients experience severe symptoms and require hospitalization. Managing these patients could be challenging for limited-resource countries, such as Palestine. This study aimed to evaluate hospitalized severe COVID-19 patients' treatment outcomes managed with supportive care and steroids., Methodology: This was a single-center observational retrospective cohort study that enrolled COVID-19 patients admitted to the "Martyrs medical military complex- COVID Hospital" in Palestine. The managing physicians manually collected data through chart reviews, including patients' characteristics, complications, outcomes, and different management modalities. Continuous and categorical variables between those who were discharged alive and who died were compared using t-test and Chi-squares test, respectively., Results: Overall, 334 patients were included in this study. Median (IQR) age was 62(11) years, 49.1% were males, and 29.6% were ICU status patients. The median (IQR) PaO2/FiO2 ratio was 76 (67), and 67.6% of these patients had moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, and 4.8% of the patients received invasive mechanical ventilation. Most of the patients (78.7%) had at least one comorbidity, and 18.3% developed at least one complication. The overall mortality was 12.3% (95% CI 8.9-16.2%), and the median (IQR) length of hospital stay was 11 (8) days. With the planned COVID-19 vaccine, vaccine hesitation is a great challenge, particularly for healthcare professionals. In this study, we examined the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine by health care workers, their concerns about it, and the reasons that might prevent them from getting vaccinated. We conducted a cross-sectional study using an anonymous online survey from December 25, 2020, to January 6, 2021. The questionnaire consisted of demographic characteristics (age, gender, profession, sector, medical history, and general health), COVID-19 related knowledge, and personal history of influenza vaccination. The intention to get the vaccine once it is available was directly asked, and attitudes towards the diseases and the vaccine were studied using a four-point Likert scale statement based on the health belief model's constructs. The study included 1159 HCWs; 62.9% were females, and 52.5% were between the ages of 30-49 years. The intention to get vaccinated was only 37.8% [95%CI: 35.0%-40.6%], while 31.5% were undecided, and 30.7% planned to refuse it. Higher levels of intention were reported among males (OR; 2.7, 95%CI: 2.0-3.7), younger ages (OR 1.7, 95%CI: 1.1-2.8), physicians (OR; 2.9, 95%CI: 2.0-4.0), HCWs at non-governmental settings (OR; 1.4, 95%CI: 1.1-1.9), those who previously received the influenza vaccine (OR 4.0, 95%CI: 2.3-7.1), and those who had higher COVID-19 related knowledge (OR; 1.7, 95%CI: 2.3-7.1). In conclusion, vaccine acceptance among HCWs was much lower than expected, which would greatly diminish the role of vaccination in reducing the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the community., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Background: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a heterogeneous group of inherited ocular diseases that result in progressive retinal degeneration. This study aims to describe different Swept-source Optical Coherence Tomographic (SS-OCT) changes in Palestinian RP patients and to explore possible correlations with Visual Acuity (VA)., Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on Retinitis Pigmentosa patients diagnosed with RP in a tertiary eye hospital. Full history and ocular examination were made. SS-OCT imaging was done for all eyes assessing the presence of cystoid macular edema, epiretinal membrane, macular holes, and external limiting membrane, ellipsoid zone status. Also, central macular thickness and choroidal vascular thickness were measured., Results: The study was run on 161 eyes of 81 patients; 53 males and 28 females. The average age at examination was 26.1 (6-78) years. Twenty-six eyes (16.1%) were of syndromic RP patients, mostly Usher syndrome; 20 eyes (12.4%). The mean Logaritmic minimal angle of resolution (LogMAR) of Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA)of the study sample was 0.66 ± 0.7. The most prevalent change was cystoid macular edema [28 eyes, (17.4%)], followed by epiretinal membrane [17eye, (10.6%)]. A macular hole was noted only in one eye (0.6%). Ellipsoid zone and external limiting membrane were absent in 55 eyes (35.0%) and 60 eyes 37.5%. Vitreous hyperreflective foci were found in 35 eyes (43.8%). LogMAR of BCVA was associated significantly with cystoid macular edema (p = 0.001), ellipsoid zone(p = 0.001), and external limiting membrane (p = 0.001)., Conclusions: Detailed SS-OCT assessment in Palestinian patients diagnosed with RP identified different morphologies from other populations. Cystoid macular edema and vitreous hyperreflective foci may reflect signs of early or intermediate stages of the disease. Disease progression can be monitored by measuring the length/width (area) of ellipsoid zone +/- external limiting membrane and choroidal vascular thickness, which should be evaluated serially using high-resolution OCT., (© 2021. Background: Diabetes is one of the most common chronic illnesses worldwide, and it is increasing in prevalence. Urinary incontinence is another worldwide health problem, with a reported prevalence that ranges from 9% to 67%. It decreases quality of life for men and women and has been associated with many poor outcomes, such as longer hospital stays, recurrent or persistent urinary tract infection, and a higher mortality rate. Previous studies have suggested that diabetes is an independent risk factor for urinary incontinence. In addition, the patients' background and clinical characteristics such as age, obesity, and child-bearing history have been found to increase the risk. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence in women with type 2 diabetes in the north West Bank and to assess the role of potential risk factors, including age, marital status, weight, and diabetes control., Methods: Women with diabetes attending the six governmental primary health care centres in the north West Bank (Jenin, Tubas, Tulkarem, Nablus, Qalqilya, and Salfit) were interviewed using the CDC National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) standardised incontinence questionnaire. SPSS version 22 was used for data entry and analysis. The prevalence of urinary incontinence was estimated and differences between groups (variables of interest) were evaluated using the chi squared test. The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of An-Najah National University, and permission to conduct the study was obtained from the Ministry of Health., Findings: 400 Palestinian women with diabetes were invited to participate in the study by convenience sampling, of whom 381 were recruited (a sample size that was chosen with a sample size formula, based on the population of the north West Bank). The participants were aged 30-83 years, and 44% (165 of 381; 95% CI 39-49) reported incontinence, regardless of the type. The prevalence of stress and urge incontinence were 34% (128) and 35% (133), respectively. 30% of women with urinary incontinence (49 of 165) reported that it did not affect their quality of life, and 34% (56 of 165) stated that it did not affect their daily activity. The presence or absence of urinary incontinence was studied in relation to the background and clinical variables by use of the chi squared test. The analysis showed a significant relationship between urinary incontinence status and age (p=0·0011), previous abdominal and genitourinary surgeries (p=0·0037), and caffeine consumption (p=0·041). There was no relationship between urinary incontinence and the duration, type of treatment, or complications of diabetes., Interpretation: The prevalence of urinary incontinence (regardless of the type) is high among Palestinian women with diabetes. This is similar to reported prevalence in women with diabetes in neighbouring countries, such as Jordan (44%) and Qatar (21%). The majority of participants in this study (70%) reported that urinary incontinence did not affect their quality of life. This may suggest that patients consider the problem to be ordinary, that it does not require medical advice, or that the symptoms are mild. The findings highlight the importance of educating women with diabetes about urinary incontinence. The primary health care medical teams, general practitioners, and nurses who care for patients with diabetes should focus on this neglected problem, and physicians should be alert to urinary incontinence as it may often go unreported and therefore undertreated. To understand whether non-reporting of urinary incontinence reflects mild symptoms, investigating a potential association between non-reporting and the severity or frequency of urinary incontinence may be of interest for future study., Funding: None., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Many primary health care (PHC) clients come in with medically unexplained complaints, leading to frequent consultations and high usage of services and healthcare costs. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) among PHC attendees and explore its relation to other mental conditions and risk factors., Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to interview 400 attendees. Men and women aged over 18 years old without a psychiatric diagnosis were invited to participate. The Somatization scale of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire was used to assess somatic symptom disorders. It is a valid tool to be used in a PHC setting. We used the Chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression to explore determinant variables., Results: Prevalence of SSD was 32.5% (95%CI = 27.9-37.1%). The most common symptoms were painful muscles (61.5%) followed by back pain (52.3%). Female gender [adjusted OR = 2.1 (95% CI = 1.2-3.7)], chronic diseases [adjusted OR = 2.4 (95%CI = 1.3-4.5)], depression [adjusted OR = 3.3 (95%CI = 2.0-5.5)], and anxiety [adjusted OR = 2.1 (95%CI = 1.2-3.6)] were all associated with SSD. In addition, frequent primary health care attendance was found to be associated with SSD [adjusted OR = 2.4 (95%CI = 1.4-4.1)]., Conclusions: SSD significantly higher among females, patients with chronic diseases, clients with anxiety and depressive disorders, and patients with frequent doctors' visits. Painful muscles and back pain are the most common symptom presented by patients, and this could be used initially by PHC physicians as a signal to consider for screening.

Background: University students, who are at risk of eating disorders (ED), are more liable to use cognitive enhancers and psychostimulants to improve their cognitive functions and lose weight. ED in Palestinian male students is a neglected health issue. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and the association between ED and cognitive enhancers, and psychostimulants use among An-Najah National University students (ANNU)., Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted in 2020 at ANNU, 1047 students completed anonymous surveys for cognitive enhancers practice, the Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26), Sick, Control, One, Fat and FOOD (SCOFF) screening tests., Results: The prevalence of ED among ANNU students was 21.2% based on EAT-26 (17.1% in males, 23.8% in females) and 31.5% based on SCOFF (24.0% in males, 36.3% in females). The binary logistic regression revealed that students at risk to have ED were water-pipe smokers (OR: 1.471, p-value 0.047), especially males, while students who were less likely to have ED were males (OR: 0.341, p-value<0.001), coffee users (OR: 0.581, p-value 0.014) and chocolate users (OR: 0.530, p-value 0.041) than nonusers. Moreover, the risk of ED increased with increasing body mass index (p-value<0.01). Clinical medical students showed the lowest prevalence (11.1%) compared to preclinical (22.5%), health sciences (23.7%), and non-medical students (20.9%) (p-value 0.059)., Conclusion: Our findings highlight water-pipe smoking as a significant health problem in males with ED, which may require unique treatment and prevention strategies. Moreover, coffee and chocolate consumption were associated with decreased risk of ED, only among males. The gender-gap in ED prevalence was very narrow compared to international results. These results prompt the need to focus on both genders in future studies instead of females.
