Nowadays, metamaterial absorbers still suffer from limited bandwidth, poor bandwidth scalability, and insufficient modulation depth. In order to solve this series of problems, we propose a metamaterial absorber based on graphene, VO 2 , gallium silver sulfide, and gold-silver alloy composites with dual-control modulation of temperature and electric field. Then we further investigate the optical switching performance of this absorber in this work. Our proposed metamaterial absorber has the advantages of broad absorption bandwidth, sufficient modulation depth, and good bandwidth scalability all together. Unlike the single inspired layer of previous designs, we innovatively adopted a multi-layer excitation structure, which can realize the purpose of absorption and bandwidth width regulation by a variety of means. Combined with the finite element analysis method, our proposed metamaterial absorber has excellent bandwidth scalability, which can be tuned from 2.7 THz bandwidth to 12.1 THz bandwidth by external electrothermal excitation. Meanwhile, the metamaterial absorber can also dynamically modulate the absorption from 3.8% to 99.8% at a wide incidence angle over the entire range of polarization angles, suggesting important potential applications in the field of optical switching in the terahertz range.

Three different modified solar cells have been passivated with copper sulfide (CuS) on a TiO 2 electrode and manganese sulfide (γ-MnS) hexagonal as photon absorbers. The MnS were prepared using (a-c) bis(N-Piperl-N-p-anisildithiocarbamato)Manganese(II) Complexes Mn[N-Piper-N-p-Anisdtc] as (MnS_1), N-p-anisidinyldithiocarbamato Mn[N-p-anisdtc] as (MnS_2) and N-piperidinyldithiocarbamato Mn[N-piperdtc] as (MnS_3). The corresponding passivated films were denoted as CM-1, CM-2, and CM-3. The influence of passivation on the structural, optical, morphological, and photochemical properties of the prepared devices has been investigated. Raman spectra show that the combination of this heterostructure is triggered by the variation in particle size and surface effect, thus resulting in good electronic conductivity. The narrow band gaps could be attributed to good interaction between the passivative materials on the TiO 2 surface. CM-2 cells, stability studies show that the cell is polarized and current flows due to electron migration across the electrolyte and interfaces at this steady state. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve for the CM-3 with the highest current density promotes the electrocatalytic activity of the assembled solar cell. The catalytic reactions are further confirmed by the interfacial electron lifetimes in the Bode plots and the impedance spectra. The current-voltage (J-V) analysis suggests that the electrons in the conduction band of TiO 2 /CuS recombine with the semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and the iodolyte HI-30 electrolyte, resulting in 5.20-6.85% photo-conversions., (© 2024. The objective of this study is to create a planar solar light absorber that exhibits exceptional absorption characteristics spanning from visible light to infrared across an ultra-wide spectral range. The eight layered structures of the absorber, from top to bottom, consisted of Al 2 O 3 , Ti, Al 2 O 3 , Ti, Al 2 O 3 , Ni, Al 2 O 3 , and Al. The COMSOL Multiphysics ® simulation software (version 6.0) was utilized to construct the absorber model and perform simulation analyses. The first significant finding of this study is that as compared to absorbers featuring seven-layered structures (excluding the top Al 2 O 3 layer) or using TiO 2 or SiO 2 layers as substituted for Al 2 O 3 layer, the presence of the top Al 2 O 3 layer demonstrated superior anti-reflection properties. Another noteworthy finding was that the top Al 2 O 3 layer provided better impedance matching compared to scenarios where it was absent or replaced with TiO 2 or SiO 2 layers, enhancing the absorber's overall efficiency. Consequently, across the ultra-wideband spectrum spanning 350 to 1970 nm, the average absorptivity reached an impressive 96.76%. One significant novelty of this study was the utilization of various top-layer materials to assess the absorption and reflection spectra, along with the optical-impedance-matching properties of the designed absorber. Another notable contribution was the successful implementation of evaporation techniques for depositing and manufacturing this optimized absorber. A further innovation involved the use of transmission electron microscopy to observe the thickness of each deposition layer. Subsequently, the simulated and calculated absorption spectra of solar energy across the AM1.5 spectrum for both the designed and fabricated absorbers were compared, demonstrating a match between the measured and simulated results.

The additive manufacturing (AM) of functional copper (Cu) parts is a major goal for many industries, from aerospace to automotive to electronics, because Cu has a high thermal and electrical conductivity as well as being ~10× cheaper than silver. Previous studies on AM of Cu have concentrated mainly on high-energy manufacturing processes such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Electron Beam Melting, and Binder Jetting. These processes all require high-temperature heat treatment in an oxygen-free environment. This paper shows an AM route to multi-layered microparts from novel nanoparticle (NP) Cu feedstocks, performed in an air environment, employing a low-power (<10 W) laser sintering process. Cu NP ink was deposited using two mechanisms, inkjet printing, and bar coating, followed by low-power laser exposure to induce particle consolidation. Initial parts were manufactured to a height of approximately 100 µm, which was achieved by multi-layer printing of 15 (bar-coated) to 300 (inkjetted) layers. There was no evidence of oxidised copper in the sintered material, but they were found to be low-density, porous structures. Nonetheless, electrical resistivity of ~28 × 10 -8 Ω m was achieved. Multi-layer and multi-rivet connection structures are critical components in the structural integrity of a commercial aircraft, in which elements like skin, splice plate, strengthen patch, and stringer are fastened together layer by layer with multiple rows of rivets for assembling the fuselage and wings. Their non-detachability and inaccessibility pose significant challenges for assessing their health states. Guided wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) has shown great potential for on-line damage monitoring in hidden structural elements. However, the multi-layer and multi-rivet features introduce complex boundary conditions for guided wave propagation and sensor layouts. Few studies have discussed the guided wave characteristic and damage diagnosis in multi-layer and multi-rivet connection structures. This paper comprehensively researches guided wave propagation characteristics in the multi-layer stringer splice joint (MLSSJ) structure through experiments and numerical simulations for the first time, consequently developing sensor layout rules for such complex structures. Moreover, a Gaussian process (GP)-based probabilistic mining diagnosis method with path-wave band features is proposed. Experiments on a batch of MLSSJ specimens are performed for validation, in which increasing crack lengths are set in each specimen. The results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed probabilistic evaluation method. The maximum root mean squared error of the GP quantitative diagnosis is 1.5 mm.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) has been identified as a significant contributor to the rising number of female cancer deaths. As, it has become clear that breast cancer development depends on the interplay of several biological factors against a single molecule. This research aimed to use proteomics to gain a regulatory and metabolic understanding of BC pathophysiology., Method: For the study, a breast cancer proteomics dataset was downloaded from ProteomeXchange and then analyzed by employing MaxQuant and Perseus. Functional enrichment analysis through Metascape and Cytoscape software showed DEPs related biomedical phenomena with potential abruption. The expression of selected lncRNA in terms of the highest connectivity parameters was then quantitatively assessed through RT-PCR in 30 tumor tissues of breast cancer patients, as compared to the adjacent healthy ones., Result: The results indicated that among the 3048 identified proteins, 1149 were differentially expressed, which could be mainly enriched in several key terms. Furthermore, the obtained findings revealed that ITGB1-DT was significantly overexpressed in tumor tissues. Moreover, we found five potential compounds that could be attributed to ITGB1-DT targets (ATN-161, Firategrast, SB-683698, dabigatran-etexilate, and tranexamic-acid)., Conclusion: These analyses proposed that ITGB1-DT could be employed as a differentiated factor to identify breast tumor tissues in healthy samples. Besides this, Firategrast could be introduced as a potential remedial agent for breast cancer patients. A huge concern on global climate/energy crises has triggered intense development of radiative coolers (RCs), which are promising green-cooling technologies. The continuous efforts on RCs have fast-tracked notable energy-savings by minimizing solar absorption and maximizing thermal emission. Recently, in addition to spectral optimization, ceramic-based thermally insulative RCs are reported to improve thermoregulation by suppressing heat gain from the surroundings. However, a high temperature co-firing process of ceramic-based thick film inevitably results in a large mismatch of structural parameters between designed and fabricated components, thereby breaking spectral optimization. Here, this article proposes a scalable, non-shrinkable, patternable, and thermally insulative ceramic RC (SNPT-RC) using a roll-to-roll process, which can fill a vital niche in the field of radiative cooling. A stand-alone SNPT-RC exhibits excellent thermal insulation (≈0.251 W m -1  K -1 ) with flame-resistivity and high solar reflectance/long-wave emissivity (≈96% and 92%, respectively). Alternate stacks of intermediate porous alumina/borosilicate (Al 2 O 3 -BS) layers not only result in outstanding thermal and spectral characteristics, causing excellent sub-ambient cooling (i.e., 7.05 °C cooling), but also non-shrinkable feature. Moreover, a perforated SNPT-RC demonstrates its versatility as a breathable radiative cooling shade and as a semi-transparent window, making it a highly promising technology for practical deployment in energy-saving architecture., (© 2023 The Authors. Oral dosage forms with adjustable drug release profiles were prepared using progesterone (PGR) as a poorly-soluble model drug. The dosage forms were made as stack assemblies of functional modules. The modules were made as PGR-carrying HPMC films cut into wafer-like circular pieces. Two types of modules were used in the study; one exhibited comparatively fast drug release and the other slow release. The fast vs. slow release of each type of film utilized resulted from the grade of HPMC used in each case. Drug loading in the assembly was controlled through the total number of modules. By adjusting the proportions of the two types of modules, it is possible to fine-tune the drug release rate of the multi-layer assemblies to a wide range of profiles, bracketed between a high and low end, corresponding to the inherently fastest or slowest release obtainable with the specific materials and procedures employed. This procedure is suitable for adjusting the spring-and-parachute parameters for enhancing/optimizing the bioavailability of poorly-soluble drugs, and for developing patient-centric formulations.

Ion current rectification (ICR) is the ratio of ion current by forward bias to backward bias and is a critical indicator of diode performance. In previous studies, there have been many attempts to improve the performance of this ICR, but there is the intrinsic problem for geometric changes that induce ionic rectification due to fabrication problems. Additionally, the high ICR could be achieved in the narrow salt concentration range only. Here, we propose a multi-layered bipolar ionic diode based on an asymmetric nanochannel network membrane (NCNM), which is realized by soft lithography and self-assembly of homogenous-sized nanoparticles. Owing to the freely changeable geometry based on soft lithography, the ICR performance can be explored according to the variation of microchannel shape. The presented diode with multi-layered configuration shows strong ICR performance, and in a broad range of salt concentrations (0.1 mM~100 mM), steady ICR performance. It is interesting to note that when each anion-selective (AS) and cation-selective (CS) NCNM volume was similar to each optimized volume in a single-layered device, the maximum ICR was obtained. Multi-physics simulation, which reveals greater ionic concentration at the bipolar diode junction under forward bias and less depletion under backward in comparison to the single-layer scenario, supports this tendency as well. Additionally, under different frequencies and salt concentrations, a large-area hysteresis loop emerges, which indicates fascinating potential for electroosmotic pumps, memristors, biosensors, etc.

Due to increasingly stringent limits for NO x emissions, there is now more interest than ever in cost-effective, precise, and durable exhaust gas sensor technology for combustion processes. This study presents a novel multi-gas sensor with resistive sensing principles for the determination of oxygen stoichiometry and NO x concentration in the exhaust gas of a diesel engine (OM 651). A screen-printed porous KMnO 4 /La-Al 2 O 3 film is used as the NO x sensitive film, while a dense ceramic BFAT (BaFe 0.74 Ta 0.25 Al 0.01 O 3-δ ) film prepared by the PAD method is used for λ-measurement in real exhaust gas. The latter is also used to correct the O 2 cross-sensitivity of the NO x sensitive film. This study presents results under dynamic conditions during an NEDC (new European driving cycle) based on a prior characterization of the sensor films in an isolated sensor chamber with static engine operation. The low-cost sensor is analyzed in a wide operation field and its potential for real exhaust gas applications is evaluated. The results are promising and, all in all, comparable with established, but usually more expensive, exhaust gas sensors.

Metalenses have potential to replace various bulky conventional optical elements with ultrathin nanostructure arrays. In particular, active metalenses with reconfigurable focusing capability have attracted considerable interest from the academic and industrial communities. However, their tuning range is currently restricted by limited material properties and fabrication difficulties. Here, a hybrid optical system capable of three-dimensional relocation of a focal spot is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The system comprises a mechanically actuated passive metalens doublet that can be easily fabricated with commonly available materials and processes. An incident laser can be focused to a desired point in three-dimensional space simply by rotating two metalenses or changing their separation. In addition, exploiting the polarization-multiplexing capability of metasurfaces, a hologram is incorporated to the metalenses to guide rotational and positional alignment of two metasurfaces. Although the phytotoxicity of graphene-based materials has been investigated extensively, the effects of different graphene-based materials on nutrient uptake in plants remain unclear. Here, we analyzed the differences in phytotoxicity between single-layer graphene oxide (sGO) and multi-layer graphene oxide (mGO) by analyzing the growth status and nitrate (NO 3 - ) accumulation in wheat plants at 0, 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg L -1 graphene oxide supply. Both sGO and mGO displayed concentration-dependent inhibitory effects on biomass, root length, number of lateral roots, and nitrogen (N) nutrient status. Treatment with 400 mg L -1 sGO caused 0.9-, 1.3-, and 1-fold higher reductions in NO 3 - -N, assimilated N, and total N concentrations in roots, respectively, than mGO treatment. Analysis of root oxidative stress and in situ NO 3 - uptake revealed that sGO caused more significant damage to the root tip and a lower NO 3 - net influx rate than mGO. In addition, the expression of NO 3 - transporter (NRT) genes in roots, including NRT1.5, NRT2.1, NRT2.2, NRT2.3, and NRT2.4, under sGO treatment were lower than those under mGO treatment. Overall, sGO treatment induced a more severe inhibitory effect on root growth and NO 3 - uptake and accumulation than mGO treatment, accompanied by significant suppression of the expression of NRTs in sGO-treated roots. We investigated the selective etching of Si versus Si1−xGex with various Ge concentrations (x = 0.13, 0.21, 0.30, 0.44) in tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution. Our results show that the Si1−xGex with a higher Ge concentration was etched slower due to the reduction in the Si(Ge)−OH bond. Owing to the difference in the etching rate, Si was selectively etched in the Si0.7Ge0.3/Si/Si0.7Ge0.3 multi-layer. The etching rate of Si depends on the Si surface orientation, as TMAH is an anisotropic etchant. The (111) and (010) facets were formed in TMAH, when Si was laterally etched in the <110> and <100> directions in the multi-layer, respectively. We also investigated the effect of the addition of Triton X-100 in TMAH on the wet etching process. Our results confirmed that the presence of 0.1 vol% Triton reduced the roughness of the etched Si and Si1−xGex surfaces. Moreover, the addition of Triton to TMAH could change the facet formation from (010) to (011) during Si etching in the <100>-direction. The facet change could reduce the lateral etching rate of Si and consequently reduce selectivity. Flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors may exhibit excellent sensing performances to be applied in wearable electronics, medical diagnosis, and electronic skin. Herein, we report a multi-layer and phased-responsive reduced graphene oxide/MXene-based piezoresistive pressure sensor with hierarchical microspines constructed by sandpaper as the template. Thanks to the multi-level and multi-layer structure, the obtained sensor realized phased response and showed wide detection range (up to 70 kPa), fast response (response/recovery time of 40/80 ms), and excellent working stability (1000 fatigue cycles). Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied for detecting various human motions including pulse beats, cheek bulging, nodding, finger bending, speech recognition, handwriting, and other pressure signals. Besides, a 6 × 6 sensing matrix integrated by the sensors was able to sensitively perceive the distribution of plane pressure. The findings in this work conceivably stand out as a new strategy to fabricate high-performance piezoresistive pressure sensors in the fields of intelligent healthcare and medical diagnosis, wearable electronic devices, electronic skin, and human-machine interaction.

Nanocomposite multi-layer TiO2/V2O5/TiO2 thin films were prepared via electron-beam evaporation using high-purity targets (TiO2 and V2O5 purity > 99.9%) at substrate temperatures of 270 °C (TiO2) and 25 °C (V2O5) under a partial pressure of oxygen of 2 × 10−4 mbar to maintain the stoichiometry. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry was used to confirm the layer structure and the optimal stoichiometry of the thin films, with a particle size of 20 to 40 nm. The thin films showed an optical transmittance of ~78% in the visible region and a reflectance of ~90% in the infrared. A decrease in transmittance was observed due to the greater cumulative thickness of the three layers and multiple reflections at the interface of the layers. The optical bandgap of the TiO2 mono-layer was ~3.49 eV, whereas that of the multi-layer TiO2/V2O5/TiO2 reached ~3.51 eV. The increase in the optical bandgap was due to the inter-diffusion of the layers at an elevated substrate temperature during the deposition. The intrinsic, structural, and morphological features of the TiO2/V2O5/TiO2 thin films suggest their efficient use as a solar water heater system.

In the present study, electro-explosive spraying technology was used to prepare a multi-layer composite coating with a staggered spatial structure on a 45 steel substrate, and the mechanical properties and wear behavior of the coating were studied. The composite coating was prepared by spraying Mo as the bonding layer, then spraying high-carbon steel and aluminum bronze alternately as a functional coating. The cross-sectional morphology, surface morphology and the properties of the coating were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and a 3D profilometer. The bonding strength, friction and wear resistance of the coating were studied by the bonding strength experiment and by the friction and wear experiment. The results showed that it is feasible to prepare a composite coating with a sponge-like spatial structure with electro-explosive technology. There was metallurgical bonding as well as mechanical bonding between the adjacent coating layers. The composite coating had the advantages of uniform thickness, high compactness, high bonding strength and good wear resistance.

Purpose: Sites of highest dominant frequency (HDF) are implicated by many proposed mechanisms underlying persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF). We hypothesized that prospectively identifying and ablating dynamic left atrial HDF sites would favorably impact the electrophysiological substrate of persAF. We aim to assess the feasibility of prospectively identifying HDF sites by global simultaneous left atrial mapping., Methods: PersAF patients with no prior ablation history underwent global simultaneous left atrial non-contact mapping. 30 s of electrograms recorded during AF were exported into a bespoke MATLAB interface to identify HDF regions, which were then targeted for ablation, prior to pulmonary vein isolation. Following ablation of each region, change in AF cycle length (AFCL) was documented (≥ 10 ms considered significant). Baseline isopotential maps of ablated regions were retrospectively analyzed looking for rotors and focal activation or extinction events., Results: A total of 51 HDF regions were identified and ablated in 10 patients (median DF 5.8Hz, range 4.4-7.1Hz). An increase in AFCL of was seen in 20 of the 51 regions (39%), including AF termination in 4 patients. 5 out of 10 patients (including the 4 patients where AF termination occurred with HDF-guided ablation) were free from AF recurrence at 1 year. The proportion of HDF occurrences in an ablated region was not associated with change in AFCL (τ = 0.11, p = 0.24). Regions where AFCL decreased by 10 ms or more (i.e., AF disorganization) after ablation also showed lowest baseline spectral organization ( p < 0.033 for any comparison). Considering all ablated regions, the average proportion of HDF events which were also HRI events was 8.0 ± 13%. Focal activations predominated (537/1253 events) in the ablated regions on isopotential maps, were modestly associated with the proportion of HDF occurrences represented by the ablated region (Kendall's τ = 0.40, p < 0.0001), and very strongly associated with focal extinction events (τ = 0.79, p < 0.0001). Rotors were rare (4/1253 events)., Conclusion: Targeting dynamic HDF sites is feasible and can be efficacious, but lacks specificity in identifying relevant human persAF substrate. Spectral organization may have an adjunctive role in preventing unnecessary substrate ablation. As a promising approach in tissue engineering, decellularization has become one of the mostly-studied research areas in tissue engineering thanks to its potential to bring about several advantages over synthetic materials since it can provide a 3-dimensional ECM structure with matching biomechanical properties of the target tissue. Amniotic membranes are the tissues that nurture the embryos during labor. Similarly, these materials have also been proposed for tissue regeneration in several applications. The main drawback in using amniotic membranes is the limited thickness of these materials since most tissues require a 3D matrix for an enhance regeneration. In order to prevent this limitation, here we report a facile fabrication methodology for multilayered amniotic membrane-based tissue constructs. The amniotic membranes of Wistar albino rats were first decellularized with the physical and chemical methods and utilized as scaffolds. Secondly, the prepared decellularized membranes were sutured to form a multilayered 3D structure. Within the study, 7 groups including control (PBS), were prepared based on physical and chemical decellularization methods. UV exposure and freezing techniques were used as a physical decellularization methods while hypertonic medium and SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) protocols were used as chemical decellularization methods. The combinations of both protocols were also used. In groups, A was the control and group B was applied just UV. In group C was applied UV and freezing. In addition to UV and freezing, in group D was applied hypertonic solution while group E was applied SDS (0.03 %). In group F was applied UV, freezing, hypertonic solution and SDS (0.03 %). In group G was applied UV, hypertonic solution, SDS (0.03 %) and freezing, respectively. Based on the histological and quantitative analyses, F and G groups were found as the most efficient decellularization protocols in rat amniotic membranes. Then, group F and G decellularized amniotic membranes were used to form scaffolds and thus-formed matrices were further characterized in vitro cell culture studies and mechanical tests. Cytotoxicity analyses performed using MTT showed a good cell viability in F and G groups scaffolds. The percentage viability rate was higher in G group (81.3 %) compared to F (75.33 %) and also cell viability in G group was found more meaningful according to p value which was obtained 0.007. Cellular adhesions after in vitro cell culture and morphology of scaffolds were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was observed that the cells cultivated in equal amounts of tissue scaffolds were higher in the F compared to that observed in group G. The mechanical testing with 40 N force revealed 0.77 mm displacement in group F while it was 0.75 mm in group G. Moreover, according to force-controlled test, 2.9 mm displacement of F group and 1.2 mm displacement of G group was measured. As a result, this study shows that the multilayered decellularized amniotic membrane scaffolds support cell survival and adhesion and can form a flexible biomaterial with desired handling properties., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. We propose a multi-layer network model for the spread of an infectious disease that accounts for interactions within the family, between children in classes and schools, and casual contacts in the population. The proposed framework is designed to test several what-if scenarios on school openings during the vaccination campaigns, thereby assessing the safety of different policies, including testing practices in schools, diverse home-isolation policies, and targeted vaccination. We demonstrate the potentialities of our model by calibrating it on epidemiological and demographic data of the spring 2021 COVID-19 vaccination campaign in France. Specifically, we consider scenarios in which a fraction of the population is vaccinated, and we focus our analysis on the role of schools as drivers of the contagions and on the implementation of targeted intervention policies oriented to children and their families. We perform our analysis by means of a campaign of Monte Carlo simulations. Our findings suggest that transmission in schools may play a key role in the spreading of a disease. Interestingly, we show that children's testing might be an important tool to flatten the epidemic curve, in particular when combined with enacting temporary online education for classes in which infected students are detected. Finally, we test a vaccination strategy that prioritizes the members of large families and we demonstrate its good performance. Human skin is a complex multilayered multiscale material that exhibits nonlinear and anisotropic mechanical behavior. It has been reported that its macroscopic behavior in terms of progression of wrinkles induced by aging is strongly dependent on its microscopic composition in terms of collagen fibers in the dermis layer. In the present work, a multiscale four-layer 2D finite element model of the skin was developed and implemented in Matlab code. The focus here was to investigate the effects of dermal collagen on the macroscopic mechanical behavior of the skin. The skin was modeled by a continuum model composed of four layers: the Stratum Corneum, the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The geometry of the different layers of the skin was represented in a 2D model with their respective thicknesses and material properties taken from literature data. The macroscopic behavior of the dermis was modeled with a nonlinear multiscale approach based on a multiscale elastic model of collagen structure going from cross-linked molecules to the collagen fiber, combined with a Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The model includes the nonlinear elasticity of the collagen fiber density, the fiber radius, the undulation, and the fiber orientation. An axial tension was applied incrementally to the lateral surfaces of the skin model. A parametric study was performed in order to investigate the effect of the collagen constituents on the macroscopic skin mechanical behavior in terms of the predicted macroscopic stress-strain curve of the skin. The results of the FE computations under uniaxial tension showed that the different layers undergo different strains, leading to a difference in the transversal deformation at the top surface. In addition, the parametric study revealed a strong correlation between macroscopic skin elasticity and its collagen structure.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical results provided by multi-layer cell-free scaffolds for the treatment of knee osteochondral defects., Methods: A systematic review was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane to identify studies evaluating the clinical efficacy of cell-free osteochondral scaffolds for knee lesions. A meta-analysis was performed on articles reporting results of the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Tegner scores. The scores were analyzed as improvement from baseline to 1, 2, and ≥ 3 years of follow-up. The modified Coleman Methodology Score was used to assess the study methodology., Results: A total of 34 studies (1022 patients) with a mean follow-up of 35 months was included. Only three osteochondral scaffolds have been investigated in clinical trials: while TruFit® has been withdrawn from the market for the questionable results, the analysis of MaioRegen and Agili-C™ provided clinical improvements at 1, 2, and ≥ 3 years of follow-up (all significantly higher than the baseline, p < 0.05), although with a limited recovery of the sport-activity level. A low rate of adverse events and an overall failure rate of 7.0% were observed, but the overall evidence level of the available studies is limited., Conclusions: Multi-layer scaffolds may provide clinical benefits for the treatment of knee osteochondral lesions at short- and mid-term follow-up and with a low number of failures, although the sport-activity level obtained seems to be limited. A multi-layer absorber using multi-bias arrays of graphene is proposed. The design methodology using the equivalent circuit model and matching concept is described. A heavy optimization process is performed to optimize bias values for different functionality. Leveraging, increased control parameters due to multi-bias scheme and simple circuit model representation, two operational modes are achieved as wide-band and multi-band absorption. The proposed absorber can perfectly absorb THz incident waves between 5.2  ​ T H z - 6 . 3  ​ T H z in wide-band mode while shows perfect absorption response in 5.3  ​ T H z , 7 . 5  ​ T H z ,  ​ 8  ​ T H z ,  ​ 8.5  ​ T H z ,  ​ 9  ​ T H z , and 9 . 5  ​ T H z in multi-band operational mode. Besides, response dependency to layers thicknesses, electron relaxation time, chemical potentials, and incident angle are reported to express acceptable sensitivity of the device. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application method of universal adhesives on the shear bond strength (SBS) of repaired composites, applied with different thicknesses., Materials and Methods: The 84 specimens (Filtek Z350 XT) were prepared, stored in distilled water for a week and thermocycled (5,000 cycles, 5°C to 55°C). They were roughened using 400-grit sandpapers and etched with phosphoric acid. Then, specimens were equally divided into 2 groups; Single Bond Universal (SU) and Prime&Bond Universal (PB). Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups according to application methods ( n = 14); UC: 1 coat + uncuring, 1C: 1 coat + curing, 3C: 3 coats + curing. After storage of the repaired composite for 24 hours, specimens were subjected to the SBS test and the data were statistically analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance and independent t -tests. Specimens were examined with a stereomicroscope to analyze fracture mode and a scanning electron microscope to observe the interface., Results: Adhesive material was a significant factor ( p = 0.001). Bond strengths with SU were higher than PB. The highest strength was obtained from the 1C group with SU. Bonding in multiple layers increased adhesive thicknesses, but there was no significant difference in SBS values ( p = 0.255). Failure mode was predominantly cohesive in old composites., Conclusions: The application of an adequate bonding system plays an important role in repairing composite resin. Calcium sulfate (CS) possesses many of the requirements for an ideal bone graft material: it is biodegradable, biocompatible, and osteoconductive. However, its relatively low strength and brittleness are major obstacles to its use as a structural bone implant. Although the strength of CS can be improved by reducing porosity, its brittleness remains a major obstacle towards its use as bone graft. Here we combine two powerful toughening strategies which are found in advanced ceramics and in natural bone: Multi-layered architectures and ductile reinforcements. We first used stress analysis and micromechanics to generate design guidelines that ensure the proper failure sequence and maximize properties. We then fabricated and tested fully dense CS by hydrostatic compression layered with layers of titanium woven mesh. Flexural experiments in hydrated conditions confirmed that the ductility and strength of titanium and the adhesion at the titanium-CS interfaces (controlled by the size of the Ti mesh) are critical factors in the mechanical performance of the composite. Background: Single liquid biopsy analytes (LBAs) have been utilized for therapy selection in metastatic breast cancer (MBC). We performed integrative statistical analyses to examine the clinical relevance of using multiple LBAs: matched circulating tumor cell (CTC) mRNA, CTC genomic DNA (gDNA), extracellular vesicle (EV) mRNA, and cell-free DNA (cfDNA)., Methods: Blood was drawn from 26 hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative MBC patients. CTC mRNA and EV mRNA were analyzed using a multi-marker qPCR. Plasma from CTC-depleted blood was utilized for cfDNA isolation. gDNA from CTCs was isolated from mRNA-depleted CTC lysates. CTC gDNA and cfDNA were analyzed by targeted sequencing. Hierarchical clustering was performed within each analyte, and its results were combined into a score termed Evaluation of multiple Liquid biopsy analytes In Metastatic breast cancer patients All from one blood sample (ELIMA.score), which calculates the contribution of each analyte to the overall survival prediction. Singular value decomposition (SVD), mutual information calculation, k-means clustering, and graph-theoretic analysis were conducted to elucidate the dependence between individual analytes., Results: A combination of two/three/four LBAs increased the prevalence of patients with actionable signals. Aggregating the results of hierarchical clustering of individual LBAs into the ELIMA.score resulted in a highly significant correlation with overall survival, thereby bolstering evidence for the additive value of using multiple LBAs. Computation of mutual information indicated that none of the LBAs is independent of the others, but the ability of a single LBA to describe the others is rather limited-only CTC gDNA could partially describe the other three LBAs. SVD revealed that the strongest singular vectors originate from all four LBAs, but a majority originated from CTC gDNA. After k-means clustering of patients based on parameters of all four LBAs, the graph-theoretic analysis revealed CTC ERBB2 variants only in patients belonging to one particular cluster., Conclusions: The additional benefits of using all four LBAs were objectively demonstrated in this pilot study, which also indicated a relative dominance of CTC gDNA over the other LBAs. Consequently, a multi-parametric liquid biopsy approach deconvolutes the genomic and transcriptomic complexity and should be considered in clinical practice.

Particulate matter (PM) and airborne viruses bring adverse influence on human health. As the most feasible way to prevent inhalation of these pollutants, face masks with excellent filtration efficiency and low press drop are in urgent demand. In this study, we report a novel methodology for producing high performance air filter by combining melt blown technique with corona charging treatment. Changing the crystal structure of polypropylene by adding magnesium stearate can avoid charge escape and ensure the stability of filtration performances. Particularly, the influence of fiber diameter, pore size, porosity, and charge storage on the filtration performances of the filter are thoroughly investigated. The filtration performances of the materials, including the loading test performance are also studied. The melt blown materials formed by four layers presented a significant filtration efficiency of 97.96%, a low pressure drop of 84.28 Pa, and a high quality factor (QF) of 0.046 Pa -1 for paraffin oil aerosol particles. Meanwhile, a robust filtration efficiency of 99.03%, a low pressure drop of 82.32 Pa, and an excellent QF of 0.056 Pa -1 for NaCl aerosol particles could be easily achieved. The multi-layered melt blown filtration material developed here would be potentially applied in the field of protective masks.

Significance: Contamination of diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) measurements of cerebral blood flow (CBF) due to systemic physiology remains a significant challenge in the clinical translation of DCS for neuromonitoring. Tunable, multi-layer Monte Carlo-based (MC) light transport models have the potential to remove extracerebral flow cross-talk in cerebral blood flow index ( CBF i ) estimates. Aim: We explore the effectiveness of MC DCS models in recovering accurate CBF i changes in the presence of strong systemic physiology variations during a hypercapnia maneuver. Approach: Multi-layer slab and head-like realistic (curved) geometries were used to run MC simulations of photon propagation through the head. The simulation data were post-processed into models with variable extracerebral thicknesses and used to fit DCS multi-distance intensity autocorrelation measurements to estimate CBF i timecourses. The results of the MC CBF i values from a set of human subject hypercapnia sessions were compared with CBF i values estimated using a semi-infinite analytical model, as commonly used in the field. Results: Group averages indicate a gradual systemic increase in blood flow following a different temporal profile versus the expected rapid CBF response. Optimized MC models, guided by several intrinsic criteria and a pressure modulation maneuver, were able to more effectively separate CBF i changes from scalp blood flow influence than the analytical fitting, which assumed a homogeneous medium. Three-layer models performed better than two-layer ones; slab and curved models achieved largely similar results, though curved geometries were closer to physiological layer thicknesses. Conclusion: Three-layer, adjustable MC models can be useful in separating distinct changes in scalp and brain blood flow. Graphene-metal substrates have received widespread attention due to their superior surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance. The strong coupling between graphene and metal particles can greatly improve the SERS performance and thus broaden the application fields. The way in which to make full use of the synergistic effect of the hybrid is still a key issue to improve SERS activity and stability. Here, we used graphene as a chemical mechanism (CM) layer and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) as an electromagnetic mechanism (EM) layer, forming a CM-EM unit and constructing a multi-layer hybrid structure as a SERS substrate. The improved SERS performance of the multilayer nanostructure was investigated experimentally and in theory. We demonstrated that the Raman enhancement effect increased as the number of CM-EM units increased, remaining nearly unchanged when the CM-EM unit was more than four. The limit of detection was down to 10 -14 M for rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 10 -12 M for crystal violet (CV), which confirmed the ultrahigh sensitivity of the multilayer SERS substrate. Furthermore, we investigated the reproducibility and thermal stability of the proposed multilayer SERS substrate. Multi-layer networks arise when more than one type of relation is observed on a common set of actors. Modeling such networks within the exponential-family random graph (ERG) framework has been previously limited to special cases and, in particular, to dependence arising from just two layers. Extensions to ERGMs are introduced to address these limitations: Conway-Maxwell-Binomial distribution to model the marginal dependence among multiple layers; a "layer logic" language to translate familiar ERGM effects to substantively meaningful interactions of observed layers; and nondegenerate triadic and degree effects. The developments are demonstrated on two previously published datasets.

Phishing is one of the most common threats that users face while browsing the web. In the current threat landscape, a targeted phishing attack (i.e., spear phishing) often constitutes the first action of a threat actor during an intrusion campaign. To tackle this threat, many data-driven approaches have been proposed, which mostly rely on the use of supervised machine learning under a single-layer approach. However, such approaches are resource-demanding and, thus, their deployment in production environments is infeasible. Moreover, most previous works utilise a feature set that can be easily tampered with by adversaries. In this paper, we investigate the use of a multi-layered detection framework in which a potential phishing domain is classified multiple times by models using different feature sets. In our work, an additional classification takes place only when the initial one scores below a predefined confidence level, which is set by the system owner. We demonstrate our approach by implementing a two-layered detection system, which uses supervised machine learning to identify phishing attacks. We evaluate our system with a dataset consisting of active phishing attacks and find that its performance is comparable to the state of the art.

A transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) is generally designed to deliver an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) through the skin for systemic action. Permeation of an API through the skin is controlled by adjusting drug concentration, formulation composition, and patch design. A bilayer, drug-in-adhesive TDDS design may allow improved modulation of the drug release profile by facilitating varying layer thicknesses and drug spatial distribution across each layer. We hypothesized that the co-release of two fixed-dose APIs from a bilayer TDDS could be controlled by modifying spatial distribution and layer thickness while maintaining the same overall formulation composition. Franz cell diffusion studies demonstrated that three different bilayer patch designs, with different spatial distribution of drug and layer thicknesses, could modulate drug permeation and be compared with a reference single-layer monolith patch design. Compared with the monolith, decreased opioid antagonist permeation while maintaining fentanyl permeation could be achieved using a bilayer design. In addition, modulation of the drug spatial distribution and individual layer thicknesses, control of each drug's permeation could be independently achieved. Bilayer patch performance did not change over an 8-week period in accelerated stability storage conditions. In conclusion, modifying the patch design of a bilayer TDDS achieves an individualized permeation of each API while maintaining constant patch composition.

One of the major challenges of daily wearable electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring is that there are rarely suitable EEG electrodes for hairy sites. Wet electrodes require conductive gels, which will dry over the acquisition time, making them unstable for long-term EEG monitoring. Additionally, the electrode-scalp impedances of most dry electrodes are not adequate for high quality EEG collection at hairy sites. In view of the above problems, a flexible multi-layer semi-dry electrode was proposed for EEG monitoring in this study. The semi-dry electrode contains a flexible electrode body layer, foam layer and reservoir layer. The probe structure of the electrode body layer enables the electrode to work effectively at hairy sites. During long-term EEG monitoring, electrolytes stored in the reservoir layer are continuously released through the foam layer to the electrode-scalp interface, ensuring a lower electrode-scalp contact impedance. The experimental results showed that the average electrode-scalp impedance of the semi-dry electrode at a hairy site was only 23.89 ± 7.44 KΩ at 10 Hz, and it was lower than 40 KΩ over a long-term use of 5 h. The electrode performed well in both static and dynamic EEG monitoring, where the temporal correlation with wet electrode signals at the hairy site could reach 94.25% and 90.65%, respectively, and specific evoked EEG signals could be collected. The flexible multi-layer semi-dry electrode can be well applied to scalp EEG monitoring at hairy sites, providing a promising solution for daily long-term monitoring of wearable EEGs.

The environmental performance of biodegradable materials has attracted attention from the academic and the industrial research over the recent years. Currently, degradation behavior and possible recyclability features, as well as actual recycling paths of such systems, are crucial to give them both durability and eco-sustainability. This paper presents a review of the degradation behaviour of biodegradable polymers and related composites, with particular concern for multi-layer films. The processing of biodegradable polymeric films and the manufacturing and properties of multilayer films based on biodegradable polymers will be discussed. The results and data collected show that: poly-lactic acid (PLA), poly-butylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) and poly-caprolactone (PCL) are the most used biodegradable polymers, but are prone to hydrolytic degradation during processing; environmental degradation is favored by enzymes, and can take place within weeks, while in water it can take from months to years; thermal degradation during recycling basically follows a hydrolytic path, due to moisture and high temperatures (β-scissions and transesterification) which may compromise processing and recycling; ultraviolet (UV) and thermal stabilization can be adequately performed using suitable stabilizers., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Broad stopband filters are proposed, based on multilayer electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metamaterial structures. The single EIT metamaterial consists of a U-shaped resonator and a strip on a polyimide substrate. The EIT-like spectral feature is firstly utilized to achieve stopband filters by properly coupling two layers of EIT structure. Influences of different rotation angles on the transmission properties of the two-layer EIT structure are investigated. It is found the wider low-transmission band can be obtained for the Transverse Magnetic (TM) polarization when the two EIT metal structures are vertical to each other. Furthermore, the bandwidth of the stopband can be controlled by increasing layers of the EIT structures with the proper architectural design. The design using a coupling effect of multi EIT-like resonances in the metamaterial would provide a new method for broad stopband filters in highly integrated optical circuits.

Biodegradable polymer based 'controlled release packaging' technology has ability to release packaging actives in controlled manner to prolong the food shelf-life. Currently available systems are not sufficiently capable of releasing multiple actives in sustainable fashion. Hence, the purpose of this study was to develop dual actives (antioxidant and antibacterial) loaded multilayered microparticles in one step and to release them at rates suitable for long-term inhibition of bacterial growth as well as lipid oxidation in food. In order to achieve this goal, 2 kinds of multilayered polymer particles made up of PLLA (Poly(l-lactic acid)) and PLGA (Poly(dl-lactic-co-glycolic acid) with varying viscosity were developed using emulsion solvent evaporation method. Surprisingly, low viscous PLGA resulted tri-layered particles (PLGA/PLLA/PLGA: shell/middle/core) instead of bi-layered (PLGA/PLLA: shell/core) particles as observed for high viscous PLGA. The mechanism of formation of tri-layered particles was investigated in detail. The outermost layer consisted of relatively more hydrophilic polymer PLGA along with benzoic acid (antibacterial) and the inner core comprised of hydrophobic polymer PLLA and tocopherol (antioxidant). Release study demonstrated that release rate of dual actives were significantly accelerated from tri-layered particles in comparison to bi-layered one and their release profiles can be well explained with the help of Ridger-Peppas model. Both sets of particles exhibited long-term antibacterial (against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) as well as antioxidant effect over a period of 60 days. Temperature and moisture can cause degradation to the impact properties of plant fiber-based composites owing to their complex chemical composition and multi-layer microstructure. This study focused on experimental characterization of the effect of important influencing factors, including manufacturing process temperature, exposure temperature, and water absorption, on the impact damage threshold and damage mechanisms of flax fiber reinforced composites. Firstly, serious reduction on the impact damage threshold and damage resistance was observed, this indicated excessive temperature can cause chemical decomposition and structural damage to flax fiber. It was also shown that a moderate high temperature resulted in lower impact damage threshold. Moreover, a small amount of water absorption could slightly improve the damage threshold load and the damage resistance. However, more water uptake caused severe degradation on the composite interface and structural damage of flax fiber, which reduced the impact performance of flax fiber reinforced composites.

This work demonstrates a mass spectrometry technique to improve data reliability when analyzing degree of polymerization (DP) of high-mass polysialic acids (PSAs). Matrix-assisted laser-desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight mass spectrometry is the technique of choice for analyzing large molecules due to its wide mass working range; however, the observed DP of PSAs using such an instrument is unreliable owing to sensitivity bias towards low-mass ions. A multi-layer MALDI sample preparation protocol is demonstrated in the current study to improve PSA sensitivity, and a dynamic instrument optimization method (DIOM) is employed to minimize detector saturation over a wide mass range. The DP information obtained in the DIOM combines a series of mass spectral data obtained with individually optimized instrument parameters to minimize the problem of sensitivity bias in respective mass ranges. The resultant mass spectra facilitate unambiguous determination of DP in the high-mass range due to significantly improved spectral quality. The main instrument parameters involved in the optimization process include extraction delay in MALDI ion source as well as the cutoff mass of the ion detector. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is attractive in various detection analysis fields. However, the quantitative method using SERS spectroscopy remains as an area to be developed. The key issues in developing quantitative analysis methods by using SERS spectroscopy are the fabrication of reliable SERS-active materials such as nanoparticle-based structures and the acquisition of the SERS signal without any disturbance that may change the SERS signal intensity and frequency. Here, the fabrication of seamless multilayered core-shell nanoparticles with an embedded Raman label compound as an internal standard (ML RLC dots) for quantitative SERS analysis is reported. The embedded Raman label compound in the nanostructure provides a reference value for calibrating the SERS signals. By using the ML RLC dots, it is possible to gain target analyte signals of different concentrations while retaining the Raman signal of the internal standard. The ML 4-BBT dots, containing 4-bromobenzenethiol (4-BBT) as an internal standard, are successfully applied in the quantitative analysis of 4-fluorobenzenethiol and thiram, a model pesticide. Additionally, ratiometric analysis was proved practical through normalization of the relative SERS intensity. The ratiometric strategy could be applied to various SERS substrates for quantitative detection of a wide variety of targets.

Filters made of cellulose fiber and perlite particles were prepared using a wet laying papermaking technique. Polyamide-amine-epichlorohydrin (PAE) was added to provide wet strength. Filters were prepared at two different total basis weights of 200 and 400 grams per square meter (gsm). Single and multi-layered filters were structured for each total basis weights. The effect of total basis weights and multi-layered structure on methylene blue adsorption and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) particle filtration was investigated. Methylene blue adsorption was performed in two modes: constant pressure and constant flow rate. In both operation modes, the adsorption capacity of multi-layered filters was significantly higher (16-100%) than for single-layer filters at the same overall weight. The effect of layer separation was also characterized using polypropylene separators and tested under constant flow rate operation. Separators provided more effective methylene blue adsorption by generating a well-distributed flow. Filtration performance was quantified with 0.5 μm silicon dioxide particles under constant pressure conditions; this is to mimic bacteria rejection. Filtration capability of SiO 2 particles was reduced slightly (12%) with decreasing individual filter layer thickness regardless of the multi-layered structure. Filtering polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules with two different molecular weights was performed; however, no rejection was recorded. The filter internal pore structure was visualized by 3D-X ray computed tomography and the void fraction was quantified. 400 gsm single layer presented areas of low fiber density forming pores, while the pore volume decreased for thinner filter layers.

The Disease Module Identification DREAM challenge  established a framework to evaluate clustering approaches in a biomedical context, by testing the association of communities with GWAS-derived common trait and disease genes. We implemented here several extensions of the MolTi software that detects communities by optimizing multiplex (and monoplex) network modularity. In particular, MolTi now runs a randomized version of the Louvain algorithm, can consider edge and layer weights, and performs recursive clustering. On simulated networks, the randomization procedure clearly improves the detection of communities. On the DREAM challenge  benchmark, the results strongly depend on the selected GWAS dataset and enrichment p -value threshold. However, the randomization procedure, as well as the consideration of weighted edges and layers generally increases the number of trait and disease community detected. Purpose: This study was performed to investigate how increasing the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content within a formulation affects the dispersion of particles and the aerosol performance efficiency of a carrier based dry powder inhalable (DPI) formulation, using a custom dry powder inhaler (DPI) development rig., Methods: Five formulations with varying concentrations of API beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) between 1% and 30% (w/w) were formulated as a multi-component carrier system containing coarse lactose and fine lactose with magnesium stearate. The morphology of the formulation and each component were investigated using scanning electron micrographs while the particle size was measured by laser diffraction. The aerosol performance, in terms of aerodynamic diameter, was assessed using the British pharmacopeia Apparatus E cascade impactor (Next generation impactor). Chemical analysis of the API was observed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)., Results: Increasing the concentration of BDP in the blend resulted in increasing numbers and size of individual agglomerates and densely packed BDP multi-layers on the surface of the lactose carrier. BDP present within the multi-layer did not disperse as individual primary particles but as dense agglomerates, which led to a decrease in aerosol performance and increased percentage of BDP deposition within the Apparatus E induction port and pre-separator., Conclusion: As the BDP concentration in the blends increases, aerosol performance of the formulation decreases, in an inversely proportional manner. Concurrently, the percentage of API deposition in the induction port and pre-separator could also be linked to the amount of micronized particles (BDP and Micronized composite carrier) present in the formulation. The effect of such dose increase on the behaviour of aerosol dispersion was investigated to gain greater insight in the development and optimisation of higher dosed carrier-based formulations., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Liver metabolic information is considered as a crucial diagnostic marker for the diagnosis of fever of unknown origin, and liver recognition is the basis of automatic diagnosis of metabolic information extraction. However, the poor quality of PET and CT images is a challenge for information extraction and target recognition in PET-CT images. The existing detection method cannot meet the requirement of liver recognition in PET-CT images, which is the key problem in the big data analysis of PET-CT images. A novel texture feature descriptor called multi-layer cube sampling (MLCS) is developed for liver boundary detection in low-dose CT and PET images. The cube sampling feature is proposed for extracting more texture information, which uses a bi-centric voxel strategy. Neighbour voxels are divided into three regions by the centre voxel and the reference voxel in the histogram, and the voxel distribution information is statistically classified as texture feature. Multi-layer texture features are also used to improve the ability and adaptability of target recognition in volume data. The proposed feature is tested on the PET and CT images for liver boundary detection. For the liver in the volume data, mean detection rate (DR) and mean error rate (ER) reached 95.15 and 7.81% in low-quality PET images, and 83.10 and 21.08% in low-contrast CT images. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method is effective and robust for liver boundary detection.

The human brain can be represented as a graph in which neural units such as cells or small volumes of tissue are heterogeneously connected to one another through structural or functional links. Brain graphs are parsimonious representations of neural systems that have begun to offer fundamental insights into healthy human cognition, as well as its alteration in disease. A critical open question in network neuroscience lies in how neural units cluster into densely interconnected groups that can provide the coordinated activity that is characteristic of perception, action, and adaptive behaviors. Tools that have proven particularly useful for addressing this question are community detection approaches, which can identify communities or modules: groups of neural units that are densely interconnected with other units in their own group but sparsely interconnected with units in other groups. In this paper, we describe a common community detection algorithm known as modularity maximization , and we detail its applications to brain graphs constructed from neuroimaging data. We pay particular attention to important algorithmic considerations, especially in recent extensions of these techniques to graphs that evolve in time. After recounting a few fundamental insights that these techniques have provided into brain function, we highlight potential avenues of methodological advancements for future studies seeking to better characterize the patterns of coordinated activity in the brain that accompany human behavior. This tutorial provides a naive reader with an introduction to theoretical considerations pertinent to the generation of brain graphs, an understanding of modularity maximization for community detection, a resource of statistical measures that can be used to characterize community structure, and an appreciation of the usefulness of these approaches in uncovering behaviorally-relevant network dynamics in neuroimaging data.

Sub-monolayers of monodisperse Au colloids with different surface coverage have been embedded in between two different metal oxide thin films, combining sol-gel depositions and proper substrates functionalization processes. The synthetized films were TiO₂, ZnO, and NiO. X-ray diffraction shows the crystallinity of all the oxides and verifies the nominal surface coverage of Au colloids. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the metal nanoparticles is affected by both bottom and top oxides: in fact, the SPR peak of Au that is sandwiched between two different oxides is centered between the SPR frequencies of Au sub-monolayers covered with only one oxide, suggesting that Au colloids effectively lay in between the two oxide layers. The desired organization of Au nanoparticles and the morphological structure of the prepared multi-layered structures has been confirmed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses that show a high quality sandwich structure. Enhancement of non-uniformly illuminated images often suffers from over-enhancement and produces unnatural results. This paper presents a naturalness preserved enhancement method for non-uniformly illuminated images, using a priori multi-layer lightness statistics acquired from high-quality images. Our work makes three important contributions: designing a novel multi-layer image enhancement model; deriving the multi-layer lightness statistics of high-quality outdoor images, which are incorporated into the multi-layer enhancement model; and showing that the overall quality rating of enhanced images is consistent with a combination of contrast enhancement and naturalness preservation. Two separate human observer evaluation studies were conducted on naturalness preservation and overall image quality. The results showed the proposed method outperformed four compared state-of-the-art enhancement methods.

Macroscopic mechanical properties of digitigrade paw pads, such as non-linear elastic and variable stiffness, have been investigated in previous studies; however, little is known about the micro-scale structural characteristics of digitigrade paw pads, or the relationship between these characteristics and the exceptional cushioning of the pads. The digitigrade paw pad consists of a multi-layered structure, which is mainly comprised of a stratified epithelium layer, a dermis layer and a subcutaneous layer. The stratified epithelium layer and dermal papillae constitute the epidermis layer. Finite element analyses were carried out and showed that the epidermis layer effectively attenuated the ground impact across impact velocities of 0.05-0.4 m/s, and that the von Mises stresses were uniformly distributed in this layer. The dermis layer encompassing the subcutaneous layer can be viewed as a hydrostatic system, which can store, release and dissipate impact energy. All three layers in the paw pad work as a whole to meet the biomechanical requirements of animal locomotion. The network architecture of the human brain has become a feature of increasing interest to the neuroscientific community, largely because of its potential to illuminate human cognition, its variation over development and aging, and its alteration in disease or injury. Traditional tools and approaches to study this architecture have largely focused on single scales-of topology, time, and space. Expanding beyond this narrow view, we focus this review on pertinent questions and novel methodological advances for the multi-scale brain. We separate our exposition into content related to multi-scale topological structure, multi-scale temporal structure, and multi-scale spatial structure. In each case, we recount empirical evidence for such structures, survey network-based methodological approaches to reveal these structures, and outline current frontiers and open questions. Although predominantly peppered with examples from human neuroimaging, we hope that this account will offer an accessible guide to any neuroscientist aiming to measure, characterize, and understand the full richness of the brain's multiscale network structure-irrespective of species, imaging modality, or spatial resolution., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. The goal of breast-conserving surgery is to completely remove all of the cancer. Currently, no intraoperative tools can microscopically analyze the entire lumpectomy specimen, which results in 20 to 60% of patients undergoing second surgeries to achieve clear margins. To address this critical need, we have laid the foundation for the development of a device that could allow accurate intraoperative margin assessment. We demonstrate that by taking advantage of the intrinsic optical contrast of breast tissue, photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) can achieve multilayered histology-like imaging of the tissue surface. The high correlation of the PAM images to the conventional histologic images allows rapid computations of diagnostic features such as nuclear size and packing density, potentially identifying small clusters of cancer cells. Because PAM does not require tissue processing or staining, it can be performed promptly and intraoperatively, enabling immediate directed re-excision and reducing the number of second surgeries.
