Counterfeit products and data vulnerability present significant challenges in contemporary society. Hence, various methods and technologies are explored for anticounterfeiting encoding, with luminescent tracers, particularly luminescent carbon dots (CDs), emerging as a notable solution. CDs offer promising contributions to product security, environmental sustainability, and the circular economy. This critical review aims to highlight the luminescence responsiveness of CDs to physical and chemical stimuli, achieved through nanoengineering their chemical structure. The discussion will delve into the various tunable luminescence mechanisms and decay times of CDs, investigating preferential excitations such as up-conversion, delayed fluorescence, fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence, persistent luminescence, energy and charge transfer, as well as photo-chemical interactions. These insights are crucial for advancing anticounterfeiting solutions. Following this exploration, a systematic review will focus on the research of luminescent CDs' smart encoding applications, encompassing anticounterfeiting, product tracing, quality certification, and information encryption. To survive and reproduce, animals need to behave adaptively by adjusting their behavior to their environment, with learning facilitating some of these processes. Dogs have become a go-to model species in comparative cognition studies, making our understanding of their learning skills paramount at multiple levels, not only with regards to basic research on their cognitive skills and the effects of domestication, but also with applied purposes such as training. In order to tackle these issues, we tested similarly raised wolves and dogs in a serial learning task inspired by Harlow's "learning set." In Phase 1, different pairs of objects were presented to the animals, one of which was baited while the other was not. Both species' performance gradually improved with each new set of objects, showing that they "learnt to learn," but no differences were found between the species in their learning speed. In Phase 2, once subjects had learned the association between one of the objects and the food reward, the contingencies were reversed and the previously unrewarded object of the same pair was now rewarded. Dogs' performance in this task seemed to be better than wolves', albeit only when considering just the first session of each reversal, suggesting that the dogs might be more flexible than wolves. Home health care companies provide health care services to patients in their homes. Due to increasing demand, the provision of home health care services requires effective management of operational costs while satisfying both patients and caregivers. In practice, uncertain service times might lead to considerable delays that adversely affect service quality. To this end, this paper proposes a new bi-objective optimization problem to model the routing and scheduling problems under uncertainty in home health care, considering the qualification and workload of caregivers. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is developed. Motivated by the challenge of computational time, we propose the Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search embedded in an Enhanced Multi-Directional Local Search framework (ALNS-EMDLS). A stochastic ALNS-EMDLS is introduced to handle uncertain service times for patients. Three kinds of metrics for evaluating the Pareto fronts highlight the efficiency of our proposed method. The sensitivity analysis validates the robustness of the proposed model and method. Finally, we apply the method to a real-life case and provide managerial recommendations.

Fish are the most species-rich vertebrate group, displaying vast ecological, anatomical and behavioural diversity, and therefore are of major interest for the study of behaviour and its evolution. However, with respect to other vertebrates, fish are relatively underrepresented in psychological and cognitive research. A greater availability of easily accessible, flexible, open-source experimental platforms that facilitate the automation of task control and data acquisition may help to reduce this bias and improve the scalability and refinement of behavioural experiments in a range of different fish species. Here we present GoFish, a fully automated platform for behavioural experiments in aquatic species. GoFish includes real-time video tracking of subjects, presentation of stimuli in a computer screen, an automatic feeder device, and closed-loop control of task contingencies and data acquisition. The design and software components of the platform are freely available, while the hardware is open-source and relatively inexpensive. The control software, Bonsai, is designed to facilitate rapid development of task workflows and is supported by a growing community of users. As an illustration and test of its use, we present the results of two experiments on discrimination learning, reversal, and choice in goldfish (Carassius auratus). GoFish facilitates the automation of high-throughput protocols and the acquisition of rich behavioural data. Objective: To compare cross-linking (CXL) plus topography-guided photorefractive keratectomy (t-PRK) and intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) in keratoconus patients, at 12 months of follow-up., Methods: This was a longitudinal, retrospective multi-center study. We included a referred sample of 154 eyes from 149 patients with grade I-III Amsler-Krümeich keratoconus with insufficient corrected-distance visual acuity (CDVA). In group 1 (CXL plus t-PRK, 87 eyes), another possible indication for surgery was evidence of progression. Group 2 (ICRS, 67 eyes) included only eyes with paracentral keratoconus (thinnest point at the inferotemporal quadrant) with coincident axes, and evidence of stabilization was required. A subgroup analysis was performed regarding the disease topographic phenotype. At 12 months postoperatively, visual, refractive, and topographic outcomes were evaluated., Results: Comparison of the outcomes between CXL plus t-PRK (group 1) and ICRS (group 2) showed similar improvements in CDVA (in group 1, CDVA improved 0.18 logMAR, and in group 2 0.12 logMAR, P =  .18) and K2 (-2,45 [6.46] D in group 1 and -2.13 [1.67] D in group 2, P  = .34) The improvement in cylinder power was greater in group 2 (-2.37 [2.07] D in group 2 versus -1.18 [2.63] D in group 1, P =  .003); group 1 had a higher decrease in Kmax (- 3.26 [3.64] versus-1.74 [2.67], P =  .001)., Conclusions: Both CXL plus t-PRK and ICRS were equally effective in improving CDVA and topographic parameters in a similar group of keratoconus patients at 12 months., Competing Interests: Declaration of conflicting interestsThe author(s) declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.

Purpose: To evaluate visual, refractive, and topographic outcomes of intracorneal ring segment implantation in relation to the achieved segment depth, using the manual technique., Setting: Ophthalmology Department, Hospital de Braga, Braga, Portugal., Design: Retrospective cohort study., Methods: We obtained 104 eyes of 93 patients with keratoconus submitted to Ferrara intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation, using a manual technique. Subjects were divided into 3 groups according to the achieved depth of implantation: 40% to 70% (Group 1), 70% to 80% (Group 2), and 80% to 100% (Group 3). Visual, refractive, and topographic variables were evaluated at baseline and 6 months. Topographic measurement was performed using Pentacam. Thibos-Horner and Alpins methods were used to analyze the vectorial change of refractive and topographic astigmatism, respectively., Results: We found a significant improvement of uncorrected distance visual acuity and corrected distance visual acuity in all groups at 6 months ( P < .005); no differences were observed regarding safety and efficacy indexes in the 3 groups ( P > .05). Manifest cylinder and spherical equivalent significantly reduced in all groups ( P < .05). Topographic evaluation showed a significant improvement of all parameters in the 3 groups ( P < .05). A shallower (Group 1) or deeper (Group 3) implantation was associated with topographic cylinder overcorrection, a higher magnitude of error, and a higher mean centroid postoperative corneal astigmatism., Conclusions: ICRS implantation with the manual technique showed to be equally effective in visual and refractive outcomes despite the depth of implantation; however, shallower or deeper implants were associated with topographic overcorrection and a higher mean centroid postoperative astigmatism, which explain the lower topographic predictability associated with manual surgery for ICRS implantation., (Copyright © 2023 Published by Wolters Kluwer on behalf of ASCRS and ESCRS.)

The basal ganglia are thought to contribute to decision-making and motor control. These functions are critically dependent on timing information, which can be extracted from the evolving state of neural populations in their main input structure, the striatum. However, it is debated whether striatal activity underlies latent, dynamic decision processes or kinematics of overt movement. Here, we measured the impact of temperature on striatal population activity and the behavior of rats, and compared the observed effects with neural activity and behavior collected in multiple versions of a temporal categorization task. Cooling caused dilation, and warming contraction, of both neural activity and patterns of judgment in time, mimicking endogenous decision-related variability in striatal activity. However, temperature did not similarly affect movement kinematics. These data provide compelling evidence that the timecourse of evolving striatal activity dictates the speed of a latent process that is used to guide choices, but not continuous motor control. More broadly, they establish temporal scaling of population activity as a likely neural basis for variability in timing behavior., (© 2023. Aim: Lactation is an important programming window for metabolic disease and neuronal alterations later in life. We aimed to study the effect of maternal glycation during lactation on offspring neurodevelopment and behaviour, assessing possible sex differences and underpinning molecular players., Methods: Female Wistar rats were treated with Glyoxalase-1 inhibitor S-p-Bromobenzylguthione cyclopentyl diester (BBGC 5 mg/kg). A control and vehicle group treated with dimethyl sulfoxide were also considered. Male and female offspring were tested at infancy for neurodevelopment hallmarks. After weaning, triglycerides and total antioxidant capacity were measured in breast milk. At adolescence, offspring were tested for locomotor ability, anxious-like behaviour, and recognition memory. Metabolic parameters were assessed, and the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were collected for molecular analysis., Key Findings: Maternal glycation reduced triglycerides and total antioxidant capacity levels in breast milk. At infancy, both male and female offspring presented an anticipation on the achievement of neurodevelopmental milestones. At adolescence, male offspring exposed to maternal glycation presented hyperlocomotion, whereas offspring of both sexes presented a risk-taking phenotype, accompanied by increase GABA A receptor levels in the hippocampus. Females also demonstrated GABA A and PSD-95 changes in prefrontal cortex. The Compensation Related Utilization of Neural Circuits Hypothesis (CRUNCH) proposes a framework for understanding task-related brain activity changes as a function of healthy aging and task complexity. Specifically, it affords the following predictions: (i) all adult age groups display more brain activation with increases in task complexity, (ii) older adults show more brain activation compared with younger adults at low task complexity levels, and (iii) disproportionately increase brain activation with increased task complexity, but (iv) show smaller (or no) increases in brain activation at the highest complexity levels. To test these hypotheses, performance on a bimanual tracking task at 4 complexity levels and associated brain activation were assessed in 3 age groups (20-40, 40-60, and 60-80 years, n = 99). All age groups showed decreased tracking accuracy and increased brain activation with increased task complexity, with larger performance decrements and activation increases in the older age groups. Older adults exhibited increased brain activation at a lower complexity level, but not the predicted failure to further increase brain activity at the highest complexity level. Signals that reduce uncertainty can be valuable because well-informed decision-makers can better align their preferences to opportunities. However, some birds and mammals display an appetite for informative signals that cannot be used to increase returns. We explore the role that reward-predictive stimuli have in fostering such preferences, aiming at distinguishing between two putative underlying mechanisms. The 'information hypothesis' proposes that reducing uncertainty is reinforcing per se, somewhat consistently with the concept of curiosity: a motivation to know in the absence of tractable extrinsic benefits. In contrast, the 'conditioned reinforcement hypothesis', an associative account, proposes asymmetries in secondarily acquired reinforcement: post-choice stimuli announcing forthcoming rewards (S + ) reinforce responses more than stimuli signalling no rewards (S - ) inhibit responses. In three treatments, rats faced two equally profitable options delivering food probabilistically after a fixed delay. In the informative option (Info), food or no food was signalled immediately after choice, whereas in the non-informative option (NoInfo) outcomes were uncertain until the delay lapsed. Subjects preferred Info when (1) both outcomes were explicitly signalled by salient auditory cues, (2) only forthcoming food delivery was explicitly signalled, and (3) only the absence of forthcoming reward was explicitly signalled. Acquisition was slower in (3), when food was not explicitly signalled, showing that signals for positive outcomes have a greater influence on the development of preference than signals for negative ones. Our results are consistent with an elaborated conditioned reinforcement account, and with the conjecture that both uncertainty reduction and conditioned reinforcement jointly act to generate preference., (© 2022. Objectives: To analyse the state of refractive surgery with Visian ICL phakic lens implantation in Spain, indicating the mean ranges of implanted powers, visual and refractive outcomes obtained and safety and efficacy indices., Method: This is a population-based, cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical, retrospective, multicentre study in which each co-author collected data from at least the last 10 patients (up to a maximum of 30) with Visian ICL phakic lens implantation. One eye from each subject was randomly selected for study inclusion, and the variables analysed were: age, gender, visual acuities with and without correction pre and post-surgery, preoperative and residualrefraction, keratometry, endothelial cellular density, anterior chamber depth from endothelium, central corneal pachymetry, intraocular pressure, white-white, implanted lens (power and size), expected and achieved spherical equivalent (SEQ) post-surgery at one month after surgery., Results: A sample of 140 eyes was obtained from 140 patients with a mean age of 31.35 ± 7.28 years. Mean preoperative SEQ was -6.33 ± 3.69D, mean CDVA was 0.96 ± 0.16, ACD was 3.30 ± 0.29 mm, WTW 12.02 ± 0.40 mm, CCT 535.03 ± 37.68 µm, ECD 2684.37 ± 313.74 cels/mm 2 and IOP 14.84 ± 2.59 mmHg. 66.4% of the implanted lenses were spherical ICLs and 33.6% toric, with a mean power of -7.81 ± 4.09D and a mean cylinder of 2.27 ± 1.23D. 5.7% of the implanted lenses were hypermetropic. The mean SEQ target selected was +0.04 ± 0.27D. 48.92% of the implanted lenses were of size 13.2 mm, with the remaining 36.69, 10.79 and 3.60% being of sizes 12.6, 12.1 and 13.7 mm, respectively. At one month after surgery a residual SEQ of -0.01 ± 0.31D was obtained. The efficacy and safety indices were 1.06 ± 0.18 and 1.10 ± 0.19, respectively. The mean central vault was 508.80 ± 201.04 µm. The accuracy between the calculated SEQ and the obtained SEQ was 99.3% for spherical lenses and 88.2% for Cyl correction. The mean ECD at 1 month after surgery was 2805.53±273.30céls/mm2, which was a difference from preoperative of 0.11% (p = 0.922), similarly, the mean IOP was 13.98 ± 2.57 mmHg, which was a difference of -0.92 ± 2.80 mmHg., Conclusions: ICL phakic lens surgery is an effective, safe and predictable procedure. The behavioural sciences are home to controversies that have survived for centuries, notably about the relation between observable behaviour and theoretical constructs addressing out-of-sight processes in the agents' brains. There is no shared definition for cognition, but the very existence of a thriving journal called Animal Cognition proves that such controversies are still live and help to (a) promote research on the complexity of processes leading to action, and (b) nudge scholars to restrict their cognitive models to those that can be falsified experimentally. Here, we illustrate some of these issues in a limited arena, focusing on the construction and expression of subjective value and choice. Using mainly work from our own laboratory, we show that valuation of alternatives is sensitive to options' properties, to subject's state, and to background alternatives. These factors exert their influence at the time the subject learns about individual options, rather than at choice time. We also show that valuation can be experimentally dissociated from the cognitive representation of options' metrics and argue that experimental animals process options independently at the time of choice, without elaborated comparisons along different dimensions. The findings we report are not consistent with the hypothesis that preference is constructed at the time of choice, a prevalent view in human decision-making research. We argue that animal cognition, viewed as a research program at the crossroads of different behavioural sciences rather than as a debate about properties of mental life, is inspiring and solid, and a progressive and progressing paradigm., (© 2022. The commercialization of amperometric or voltammetric biosensors that operate at potentials lower than -0.2 V vs SHE has been hindered by the need for anoxic working conditions due to the interference of molecular oxygen, whose electrochemical reduction can potentially mask other redox processes and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). A deoxygenation step must be thus integrated into the analytical process. To this end, several (bio)chemical oxygen scavenging systems have been proposed, such as the bi-enzyme system, glucose oxidase/catalase. Still, a few issues persist owing to enzyme impurities and the formation of oxygen reactive species. Here in, we propose a new mono-enzymatic oxygen scavenging system composed of a multicopper oxidase as a single biocatalytic oxygen reducer. As a model, we used bilirubin oxidase (BOD), which catalyzes the direct reduction of oxygen to water in the presence of an electron donor substrate, without releasing hydrogen peroxide. Both the direct electron transfer and mediated electrochemical approach using different co-substrates were screened for the ability to promote the enzymatic reduction of oxygen. An optimal combination of BOD with sodium ascorbate proved to be quick (5 min) and effective. It was subsequently employed, as a proof-of-concept, in a voltammetric biosensor based on a multiheme cytochrome c nitrite reductase, which performs the reduction of nitrite to ammonia at potentials below -0.3 V vs SHE. Purpose: To compare visual, refractive, and safety outcomes of posterior chamber Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation for the correction of myopia according to the preoperative anterior chamber depth (ACD)., Methods: Retrospective, comparative study, patients submitted to implantation of myopic posterior-chamber phakic Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), model V4C/V5, minimum follow-up of 12 months; two groups were created: Group 1 (ACD 2.80 to 2.99 mm) and Group 2 (ACD equal to or greater than 3.00 mm). The parameters evaluated were uncorrected and corrected visual acuity, subjective refraction, efficacy and safety index, predictability, endothelial cell density, central vault, anterior chamber angle and postoperative complications. A total of 558 eyes from 298 patients were evaluated: 111 eyes (19.9%) in group 1 and 447 eyes (80.1%) in group 2., Results: At 12 months, the efficacy index was similar in both groups ( p  = 0.264); the safety index was higher in group 1 ( p  = 0.031); the mean central Vault was significantly lower in group 1 (212.8 vs 410.6 μm; p  < 0.001). Respectively, 93 (83.8%) and 366 (84.1%) eyes were within ±0.50 D of targeted refraction. Anterior chamber angle significantly decreased during follow-up in both groups ( p  < 0.001; p  < 0.001). Intraocular pressure did not change significantly ( p  = 0.310 and p  = 0.446, respectively). There were no significant differences in endothelial cell density loss ( p  = 0.278) or in the rate of complications observed ( p  = 0.733)., Conclusions: ICL implantation is an effective and safe procedure in eyes with shallow anterior chambers, with visual and refractive results and complication rates identical to those obtained in deeper anterior chambers.

Purpose: To analyze the visual and refractive results after secondary IOL implantation using different surgical techniques - iris-claw aphakic IOL through a corneal incision or scleral tunnel, and 3-piece IOL into the ciliary sulcus., Patients and Methods: Retrospective study including patients that were submitted to secondary IOL implantation from January 2017 to December 2019 at the Department of Ophthalmology of Hospital de Braga, Portugal. We collected demographic data (age, surgical indication, comorbidities, surgical technique, IOL implanted, and intra and postoperative complications) and visual and refractive data [preoperative and 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month postoperative corrected-distance visual acuity (CDVA), spherical equivalent (SE), manifest cylinder, and intraocular pressure]., Results: 128 eyes from 123 patients were included. The most frequent surgical indications were IOL subluxation/luxation (62.5%) and intraoperative posterior capsular rupture (23.4%). CDVA improved from 1.26 ± 0.51 to 0.47 ± 0.49 logMar (p < .001). CDVA was significantly better in the 3-piece into the ciliary sulcus IOL group than both other groups. The final SE was -0.68 ± 0.94 diopters. The mean manifest refractive cylinder remained stable until the 6th month after the surgery (p = .454) and improved in the last 6 months of follow-up (p = .015). In the postoperative period, the cylinder was higher in the corneal incision iris-claw aphakic IOL group and lower in the 3-piece IOL into the ciliary sulcus group (p < 0,05). The corneal incision iris-claw aphakic IOL group presented the most postoperative complications., Conclusion: All techniques showed satisfying results. The 3-piece IOL into the ciliary sulcus group showed the best visual and refractive performance, followed by the scleral tunnel iris-claw IOL group and the corneal incision iris-claw IOL group.

Titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) has been widely investigated as a photocatalytic material, and the fact that its performance depends on its crystalline structure motivates further research on the relationship between preparation methods and material properties. In this work, TiO 2 thin films were grown on non-functionalized wave-like patterned vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (w-VA-CNTs) via the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) analysis revealed that the structure of the TiO 2 /VA-CNT nanocomposites varied from amorphous to a crystalline phase with increasing deposition temperature, suggesting a "critical deposition temperature" for the anatase crystalline phase formation. On the other hand, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) studies revealed that the non-functionalized carbon nanotubes were conformally and homogeneously coated with TiO 2 , forming a nanocomposite while preserving the morphology of the nanotubes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) provided information about the surface chemistry and stoichiometry of TiO 2 . The photodegradation experiments under ultraviolet (UV) light on a model pollutant (Rhodamine B, RhB) revealed that the nanocomposite comprised of anatase crystalline TiO 2 grown at 200 °C (11.2 nm thickness) presented the highest degradation efficiency viz 55% with an illumination time of 240 min. Purpose: To compare visual, refractive, and safety outcomes of toric posterior chamber Implantable Collamer Lens (T-ICL) (STAAR Surgical) and toric iris-fixated foldable phakic intraocular lens (IOL) (T-Artiflex; Ophtec BV) implantation for the correction of myopic astigmatism., Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 312 eyes of 312 patients who had phakic IOL implantation for myopic astigmatism. Two groups were defined: 205 eyes that underwent T-ICL implantation and 107 eyes that underwent T-Artiflex implantation. Safety, efficacy, and predictability outcomes were evaluated preoperatively and at 12 months postoperatively. Refractive and corneal astigmatic vector analysis were performed using the Alpins method., Results: One year postoperatively, uncorrected distance visual acuity was 0.05 ± 0.18 (T-ICL) and 0.10 ± 0.16 (T-Artiflex) logMAR, with efficacy indexes of 1.16 ± 0.27 and 1.05 ± 0.31, respectively ( P < .001). Safety indexes were 1.28 ± 0.30 and 1.21 ± 0.31, respectively ( P = .04). Spherical equivalent was within ±0.50 diopters (D) of emmetropia in 165 (80.5%) and 88 (82.2%) eyes, respectively. Refractive astigmatic analysis showed an index of success of 0.28 ± 0.33 (T-ICL) and 0.31 ± 0.26 (T-Artiflex) ( P = .07). Surgically induced corneal astigmatism was 0.48 ± 0.74 and 0.81 ± 0.61 D, respectively ( P < .001). Mean endothelial loss was 1.11% and 2.05%, respectively ( P = .42). Six (2.9%) eyes in the T-ICL group and 1 (0.9%) eye in the T-Artiflex group had phakic IOL repositioning due to significant misalignment. No vision-threatening complications occurred., Conclusions: Both the T-ICL and T-Artiflex groups showed high visual and refractive efficacy with a good safety profile for the correction of myopic astigmatism. T-ICL implantation demonstrated significantly better efficacy and safety indexes after 12 months. Vector analysis showed similar refractive astigmatic correction in both groups, but T-Artiflex implantation revealed higher surgically induced corneal astigmatism. Multiple functional changes occur in the brain with increasing age. Among those, older adults typically display more restricted fluctuations of brain activity, both during resting-state and task execution. These altered dynamic patterns have been linked to reduced task performance across multiple behavioral domains. Windowed functional connectivity, which is typically employed in the study of connectivity dynamics, however, might not be able to properly characterize moment-to-moment variations of individual networks. In the present study, we used innovation-driven co-activation patterns (ICAP) to overcome this limitation and investigate the length (duration) and frequency (innovation) in which various brain networks emerged across the adult lifespan (N= 92) during a resting-state period. We identified a link between increasing age and a tendency to engage brain areas with distinct functional associations simultaneously as a single network. The emergence of isolated and spatially well-defined visual, motor, frontoparietal, and posterior networks decreased with increased age. This reduction in dynamics of specialized networks mediated age-related performance decreases (i.e., increases in interlimb interference) in a bimanual motor task. Altogether, our findings demonstrated that older compared to younger adults tend to activate fewer network configurations, which include multiple functionally distinct brain areas. The reduction in independent emergence of functionally well-defined and task-relevant networks may reflect an expression of brain dedifferentiation and is likely associated with functional modulatory deficits, negatively impacting motor behavior., (Copyright © 2022. Among the regions of the Southern Ocean, the northern Antarctic Peninsula (NAP) has emerged as a hotspot of climate change investigation. Nonetheless, studies have indicated issues and knowledge gaps that must be addressed to expand the understanding of the carbonate system in the region. Therefore, we focused on identifying current knowledge about sea-air CO2 fluxes (FCO2), anthropogenic carbon (Cant) and ocean acidification along NAP and provide a better comprehension of the key physical processes controlling the carbonate system. Regarding physical dynamics, we discuss the role of water masses formation, climate modes, upwelling and intrusions of Circumpolar Deep Water, and mesoscale processes. For FCO2, we show that the summer season corresponds to a strong sink in coastal areas, leading to CO2 uptake that is greater than or equal to that of the open ocean. We highlight that the prevalence of summer studies prevents comprehending processes occurring throughout the year and the net annual CO2 balance in the region. Thus, temporal investigations are necessary to determine natural environmental fluctuations and to distinguish natural variability from anthropogenically driven changes. We emphasize the importance of more studies regarding Cant uptake rate, accumulation, and export to global oceans.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy on intraocular lens (IOL) position and anterior segment parameters with a new swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) device (Anterion ® , Heidelberg Engineering GmbH)., Patients and Methods: A total of 50 eyes from 50 consecutive patients were included. All patients had visually significant posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after uneventful phacoemulsification surgery with manual capsulorhexis and single-piece C-loop acrylic IOL implantation (AcrySof ® SA60AT) and were treated with Nd:YAG laser. Anterior segment images were captured with Anterion ® in non-dilated conditions before and one month after the procedure. In the "Metrics App", we collected data of the anterior chamber angle (ACA) 3 and 9 o'clock, the anterior chamber depth (ACD), the anterior chamber volume (ACV), and the central corneal thickness (CCT). We also collected demographic and clinical data [age, gender, months from surgery to Nd: YAG capsulotomy, pre- and post-capsulotomy corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and spherical equivalent, and axial length]., Results: We did not find a statistically significant difference in ACD after the Nd:YAG capsulotomy (3.96 ± 0.55 vs 3.97 ± 0.55 mm, p = 0.10). In 28 patients, we noted a backward movement of the IOL; in the remaining 22, the IOL moved forward or did not change at all. We did not observe significant changes in ACA at the 3 and 9 o'clock reference points, ACV, or CCT. There was an improvement in CDVA after the procedure (0.37 ± 0.21 vs 0.12 ± 0.27 logMAR, p = 0.015), without statistically significant differences in SE (-0.15 ± 0.84 vs -0.25 ± 0,93, p = 0.42). Axial length was not correlated with ACD variations after the procedure (p = 0.67)., Conclusion: Our results show that Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy does not change the axial position of a single-piece C-loop acrylic IOL inside the capsular bag, as well as other anterior chamber parameters., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work., (© 2022 João et al.)

The present study reports a novel voltammetric biosensor for cyanide based on its inhibitory effect on cytochrome c nitrite reductase (ccNiR). Interestingly, the earlier development of a point-of-care test for nitrite based on the direct electrochemistry of ccNiR has shown that the cyanide inhibition depends on the type of carbon material employed as transducer (Monteiro et al., 2019). In this work, commercial graphite pencil leads were employed in the construction of both working and pseudo-reference electrodes, with ccNiR being simply drop casted onto the former. In this way, we produced a functional and fully integrated voltammetric biosensor for nitrite quantification that also allows to observe a decrease in the catalytic current due to cyanide addition. Under turnover conditions, the biosensor showed a linear response with the logarithm of cyanide concentration in the 5-76 μM (cyclic voltammetry) and 1-40 μM (square-wave voltammetry) ranges, with a sensitivity of 20-25% ln [cyanide μM] -1 and a detection limit of 0.86-4.4 μM. The application of the pencil lead as a putative pseudo-reference was very promising, since the potentials profile matched those observed with a true reference electrode (Ag/AgCl). Overall, the direct electron transfer between ccNiR and a pencil lead electrode was demonstrated for the first time, with cyanide-induced inhibition being easily monitored, paving the way for the employment of these low-cost bioelectrodes as cyanide probes for on-site surveillance of aquatic environments., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: Surveillance studies for Staphylococcus aureus carriage are a primary tool to survey the prevalence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in the general population, patients and healthcare workers. We have previously reported S. aureus carriage in various African countries, including Cape Verde., Methods: Whole-genome sequences of 106 S. aureus isolates from Cape Verde were determined., Results: Staphylococcus aureus carriage isolates in Cape Verde show high genetic variability, with the detection of 27 sequence types (STs) and three primary genetic clusters associated with ST152, ST15 and ST5. One transmission event with less than eight core-genome single nucleotide polymorphisms (cgSNP) differences was detected among the ST5-VI MRSA lineage. Genetic analysis confirmed the phenotypic resistance and allowed the identification of six independent events of plasmid or transposon loss associated with the deletion of blaZ in nine isolates. In the four ST5 MRSA isolates, loss of the blaZ plasmid coincided with the acquisition of SCCmec type VI and an unusual penicillin phenotype with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at the breakpoint, indicating an adaptation trend in this endemic lineage. Similar events of blaZ plasmid loss, with concomitant acquisition SCCmec elements, were detected among ST5 isolates from different geographical origins., Conclusion: Overall, the genome data allowed to place isolates in a phylogenetic context and to identify different blaZ gene deletions associated with plasmid or transposon loss. Filial imprinting is a dedicated learning process that lacks explicit reinforcement. The phenomenon itself is narrowly heritably canalized, but its content, the representation of the parental object, reflects the circumstances of the newborn. Imprinting has recently been shown to be even more subtle and complex than previously envisaged, since ducklings and chicks are now known to select and represent for later generalization abstract conceptual properties of the objects they perceive as neonates, including movement pattern, heterogeneity and inter-component relationships of same or different. Here, we investigate day-old Mallard ( Anas platyrhynchos ) ducklings' bias towards imprinting on acoustic stimuli made from mallards' vocalizations as opposed to white noise, whether they imprint on the temporal structure of brief acoustic stimuli of either kind, and whether they generalize timing information across the two sounds. Our data are consistent with a strong innate preference for natural sounds, but do not reliably establish sensitivity to temporal relations. This fits with the view that imprinting includes the establishment of representations of both primary percepts and selective abstract properties of their early perceptual input, meshing together genetically transmitted prior pre-dispositions with active selection and processing of the perceptual input.

The inherent scalability, low production cost and mechanical flexibility of laser-induced graphene (LIG) combined with its high electrical conductivity, hierarchical porosity and large surface area are appealing characteristics for many applications. Still, other materials can be combined with LIG to provide added functionalities and enhanced performance. This work exploits the most adequate electrodeposition parameters to produce LIG/ZnO nanocomposites. Low-temperature pulsed electrodeposition allowed the conformal and controlled deposition of ZnO rods deep inside the LIG pores whilst maintaining its inherent porosity, which constitute fundamental advances regarding other methods for LIG/ZnO composite production. Compared to bare LIG, the composites more than doubled electrode capacitance up to 1.41 mF cm -2 in 1 M KCl, while maintaining long-term cycle stability, low ohmic losses and swift electron transfer. The composites also display a luminescence band peaked at the orange/red spectral region, with the main excitation maxima at ~ 3.33 eV matching the expected for the ZnO bandgap at room temperature. A pronounced sub-bandgap tail of states with an onset absorption near 3.07 eV indicates a high amount of defect states, namely surface-related defects. This work shows that these environmentally sustainable multifunctional nanocomposites are valid alternatives for supercapacitors, electrochemical/optical biosensors and photocatalytic/photoelectrochemical devices., (© 2021. The impaired blood flow to the brain causes a decrease in the supply of oxygen that can result in cerebral ischemia; if the blood flow is not restored quickly, neuronal injury or death will occur. Under hypoxic conditions, the production of nitric oxide ( ● NO), via the classical L-arginine- ● NO synthase pathway, is reduced, which can compromise ● NO-dependent vasodilation. However, the alternative nitrite (NO 2 - ) reduction to ● NO, under neuronal hypoxia and ischemia conditions, has been viewed as an in vivo storage pool of ● NO, complementing its enzymatic synthesis. Brain research is thus demanding suitable tools to probe nitrite's temporal and spatial dynamics in vivo. In this work, we propose a new method for the real-time measurement of nitrite concentration in the brain extracellular space, using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) and carbon microfiber electrodes as sensing probes. In this way, nitrite was detected anodically and in vitro, in the 5-500 µM range, in the presence of increasing physiological concentrations of ascorbate (100-500 µM). These sensors were then tested for real-time and in vivo recordings in the anesthetized rat hippocampus; using fast electrochemical techniques, local and reproducible transients of nitrite oxidation signals were observed, upon pressure ejection of an exogenous nitrite solution into the brain tissue. Nitrite microsensors are thus a valuable tool for investigating the role of this inorganic anion in brain redox signaling.

The combined allergic rhinitis and asthma syndrome (CARAS) is a chronic airway inflammation of allergic individuals, with a type 2 immune response. Pharmacotherapy is based on drugs with relevant side effects. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the synthetic alkaloid, MHTP in the experimental model of CARAS. Therefore, BALB/c mice were ovalbumin (OVA) -sensitized and -challenged and treated with MHTP by intranasal or oral routes. Treated animals showed a decrease (p < 0.05) of sneezing, nasal rubbings, and histamine nasal hyperactivity. Besides, MHTP presented binding energy and favorable interaction for adequate anchoring in the histamine H1 receptor. MHTP treatment inhibited the eosinophil migration into the nasal (NALF) and the bronchoalveolar (BALF) fluids. Histological analysis showed that the alkaloid decreased the inflammatory cells in the subepithelial and perivascular regions of nasal tissue and in the peribronchiolar and perivascular regions of lung tissue. The MHTP treatment also reduced the pulmonary hyperactivity by decreasing the smooth muscle layer hypertrophy and the collagen fiber deposition in the extracellular matrix. The immunomodulatory effect of the alkaloid was due to the decrease of cytokines like IL-5 and IL-17A (type 2 and 3), TSLP (epithelial), and the immunoregulatory cytokine, TGF-β. These MHTP effects on granulocytes were dependent on the p38/ERK1/2 MAP kinase signaling pathway axis. Indeed, the synthetic alkaloid reduced the frequency of activation of both kinases independent of the NF-κB (p65) pathway indicating that the molecule shut down the intracellular transduction signals underlie the cytokine gene transcription., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness, safety, and stability of Ferrara-type intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) by manual surgery implantation in patients with keratoconus., Setting: Ophthalmology Department, Hospital de Braga, Braga, Portugal., Design: Retrospective cohort study., Methods: This study included 124 eyes that had ICRS implantation using the manual technique with a follow-up of 5 years. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), subjective refraction, keratometry, aberrometry, and pachymetry maps were evaluated preoperatively and at 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years postoperatively. A secondary analysis of all variables was performed comparing 2 subgroups of patients: a group younger than 30 years and a group of 30 years or older., Results: At 5 years, both mean UDVA and CDVA improved significantly (P < .0001) from a preoperative value of 0.91 ± 0.36 to 0.46 ± 0.32 logMAR and 0.40 ± 0.27 to 0.22 ± 0.20 logMAR, respectively. Spherical equivalent, refractive cylinder, and all topography values significantly decreased postoperatively (P < .0001). No regression was observed in any visual or topographic parameter during the entire follow-up. Regarding the subgroup analysis, both younger and older patients demonstrated similar and stable results from the preoperative to the 5-year visit, except for minimum pachymetry value change over time., Conclusions: Ferrara-type ICRS implantation significantly improved visual acuity, refractive error, and topographic values; the improvement was stable throughout a 5-year follow-up period. Purpose: To compare visual, refractive and safety outcomes of central-hole posterior chamber collamer phakic intraocular lens implantation for low and moderate-to-high myopia., Subjects/methods: This retrospective cohort study included 338 eyes submitted to posterior chamber collamer phakic intraocular lens implantation that completed a 12-month postoperative follow-up. Two groups were defined depending on preoperative spherical equivalent: group 1 comprised 106 eyes with manifest spherical equivalent of -6.00 D or less; group 2 comprised 232 eyes with manifest spherical equivalent higher than -6.00 D. Effectiveness, predictability, stability and safety outcomes were compared preoperatively and at 1, 6 and 12 months postoperatively., Results: At 1-year postoperative, uncorrected and corrected visual acuities were 0.02 ± 0.17 and -0.01 ± 0.12 logMAR (group 1) and 0.04 ± 0.20 and 0.01 ± 0.16 logMAR (group 2), with an efficacy index of 1.05 ± 0.17 and 1.17 ± 0.28. Respectively, 92 (86.8%) and 199 (85.8%) eyes were within ±0.50 D of targeted refraction, and postoperative manifest refraction changes were -0.07 ± 0.25 D and -0.07 ± 0.35 D. Intraocular pressure did not change significantly. The mean rate of endothelial cell loss was 1.12% and 1.10%, respectively. One case of anterior subcapsular cataract (group 2) was observed. ICL exchange occurred in one case (group 1) and three cases (group 2). No vision-threatening complications were reported., Conclusion: The posterior chamber collamer phakic intraocular lens implantation demonstrated high visual and refractive efficacy with an excellent safety profile for the correction of both low and moderate-to-high myopia, revealing equivalent 1-year outcomes regardless of the degree of preoperative myopia.

Introduction/Study Goals: Thoracic sympathectomy is considered to be the most effective treatment for hyperhidrosis, a procedure traditionally performed under general anesthesia. Nowadays it's a minimally invasive procedure, which makes it possible to perform under sedation with local anesthesia. The goal in this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of this anesthetic technique in video-assisted thoracic sympathectomy., Material and Methods: The study took place in Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte, between June 2017 and September 2019. The anesthetic technique consisted in a propofol infusion titrated to achieve a moderate to deep sedation, in addition to local anesthesia with lidocaine 2% and ropivacaine 0,75% on surgical incisions. All patients were assessed subsequently for pain and anesthetic or surgical complications, with a 30-day follow-up., Results: From a final sample of 63 patients, most were female (70%), with age ranging between 15 and 57 years old. There were no intra-operative complications. On the immediate postoperative period there were only two cases of poorly controlled pain., Conclusion: Results showed efficiency and safety with sedation associated with local anaesthesia as an anaesthetic technique for video-assisted thoracic sympathectomy. This anaesthetic approach avoids possible complications associated with general anaesthesia and one lung ventilation, with good analgesic efficacy. However, there is still the need for a bigger sample to confirm the obtained results and to strengthen sedation as an anesthetic approach in thoracic sympathectomy.

Purpose: To assess the outcomes of implanting a new 300° arc-length intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) in moderate to advanced central hyperprolate keratoconus., Methods: Forty-two eyes with moderate to advanced central hyperprolate keratoconus were evaluated before and after implanting an inferior 300° ICRS (AJL Ophthalmic). The clinical measurements taken included manifest refraction, uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuity (logMAR scale), and corneal tomographic analysis (Sirius; Costruzioni Strumenti Oftalmici). Changes in the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces and the root mean square (RMS) for coma-like aberrations for a pupil size of 4.5 mm were evaluated. All examinations were performed before surgery and 6 months after surgery., Results: The mean UDVA improved from 1.12 ± 0.48 logMAR preoperatively to 0.73 ± 0.37 logMAR postoperatively ( P < .0001). The mean CDVA changed from 0.33 ± 0.20 to 0.20 ± 0.11 logMAR ( P < .0001). Postoperatively, the CDVA improved by two or more lines in 45.2% of the eyes and increased by one line in 19.04%, and none of the patients lost lines of CDVA. All of the anterior and posterior corneal tomographic parameters analyzed were significantly improved after surgery, except posterior flat keratometry, which remained unchanged. In 80.95% of the eyes, the postoperative mean keratometry was 50.00 diopters or less. The 6-month RMS for coma-like aberrations also declined significantly from 1.57 ± 0.68 to 1.06 ± 0.42 µm after surgery ( P < .0001)., Conclusions: These results suggest that implanting a 300° arc-length ICRS is a safe and effective procedure for treating patients with moderate to advanced central hyperprolate keratoconus and clear cornea. Tetragonal Er 0.5 Nb 0.5 O 2 and monoclinic ErNbO 4 micro- and nanoparticles were prepared by the citrate sol-gel method and heat-treated at temperatures between 700 and 1600 °C. ErNbO 4 revealed a spherical-shaped crystallite, whose size increased with heat treatment temperatures. To assess their optical properties at room temperature (RT), a thorough spectroscopic study was conducted. RT photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy revealed that Er 3+ optical activation was achieved in all samples. The photoluminescence spectra show the green/yellow 2 H 11/2 , 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 and red 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 intraionic transitions as the main visible recombination, with the number of the crystal field splitting Er 3+ multiplets reflecting the ion site symmetry in the crystalline phases. PL excitation allows the identification of Er 3+ high-energy excited multiplets as the preferential population paths of the emitting levels. Independently of the crystalline structure, the intensity ratio between the green/yellow and red intraionic transitions was found to be strongly sensitive to the excitation energy. After pumping the samples with a resonant excitation into the 4 G 11/2 excited multiplet, a green/yellow transition stronger than the red one was observed, whereas the reverse occurred for higher excitation photon energies. Thus, a controllable selective excited tunable green to red color was achieved, which endows new opportunities for photonic and optoelectronic applications.

Purpose: The pharmacology and clinical pharmacology and therapeutics (CPT) education during the undergraduate medical curriculum of NOVA Medical School, Lisbon, Portugal, was changed from a traditional programme (i.e. discipline-based, lectures) to a problem-based learning (PBL) programme (i.e. integrated, case-based discussions) without an increase in teaching hours. The aim of this study was to investigate whether this change improved the prescribing competencies of final-year medical students., Methods: Final-year students from both programmes (2015 and 2019) were invited to complete a validated prescribing assessment and questionnaire. The assessment comprised 24 multiple-choice questions in three subdomains (working mechanism, side-effects and interactions/contraindications), and five clinical case scenarios of common diseases. The questionnaire focused on self-reported prescribing confidence, preparedness for future prescribing task and education received., Results: In total, 36 (22%) final-year medical students from the traditional programme and 54 (23%) from the PBL programme participated. Overall, students in the PBL programme had significantly higher knowledge scores than students in the traditional programme (76% (SD 9) vs 67% (SD 15); p = 0.002). Additionally, students in the PBL programme made significantly fewer inappropriate therapy choices (p = 0.023) and fewer erroneous prescriptions than did students in the traditional programme (p = 0.27). Students in the PBL programme felt more confident in prescribing, felt better prepared for prescribing as junior doctor and completed more drug prescriptions during their medical training., Conclusion: Changing from a traditional programme to an integrated PBL programme in pharmacology and CPT during the undergraduate medical curriculum may improve the prescribing competencies of final-year students.

Several phenotypes that impact the capacity of cancer cells to survive and proliferate are dynamic. Here we used the number of cells in colonies as an assessment of fitness and devised a novel method called Dynamic Fitness Analysis (DynaFit) to measure the dynamics in fitness over the course of colony formation. DynaFit is based on the variance in growth rate of a population of founder cells compared with the variance in growth rate of colonies with different sizes. DynaFit revealed that cell fitness in cancer cell lines, primary cancer cells, and fibroblasts under unhindered growth conditions is dynamic. Key cellular mechanisms such as ERK signaling and cell-cycle synchronization differed significantly among cells in colonies after 2 to 4 generations and became indistinguishable from randomly sampled cells regarding these features. In the presence of cytotoxic agents, colonies reduced their variance in growth rate when compared with their founder cell, indicating a dynamic nature in the capacity to survive and proliferate in the presence of a drug. This finding was supported by measurable differences in DNA damage and induction of senescence among cells of colonies. The presence of epigenetic modulators during the formation of colonies stabilized their fitness for at least four generations. Collectively, these results support the understanding that cancer cell fitness is dynamic and its modulation is a fundamental aspect to be considered in comprehending cancer cell biology and its response to therapeutic interventions. SIGNIFICANCE: Cancer cell fitness is dynamic over the course of the formation of colonies. Purpose: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of iris-fixated foldable phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) for the management of myopia and astigmatism after 6-year follow-up., Setting: Ophthalmology Department, Hospital Braga, Portugal., Design: Retrospective cohort study., Methods: Patients included underwent iris-fixated foldable Artiflex pIOL implantation between January 2010 and December 2013. Follow-up evaluations were performed 6 months postoperatively and every 12 months until 72 months. Preoperative and follow-up data on uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction, endothelial cell density (ECD), and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were analyzed., Results: A total of 177 eyes of 98 patients with a mean age of 32.33 ± 7.13 years were analyzed. There was a statistically significant improvement in CDVA from 0.09 ± 0.02 logMAR preoperatively to 0.04 ± 0.02 logMAR (P < .0001) at 6 years postoperatively. The spherical equivalent demonstrated a statistically significant improvement from -9.50 ± 2.93 diopters (D) to -0.41 ± 0.45 D at 6 years. At 72 months, the efficacy and safety indexes were 0.94 and 1.15, respectively. A mean loss of 31.77 cells/mm2 (1.19%) was observed each year until the sixth year. The overall mean ECD loss after correction for the physiological loss was 3.02% after 6 years. No correlations were observed between the mean ECD loss and the preoperative ACD., Conclusions: The Artiflex pIOL was a safe, effective, and a stable option to correct myopia. The aim of this study was to analyze the 4-carvomenthenol (carvo) oral treatment on the experimental model of the combined allergic rhinitis and asthma syndrome (CARAS). BALB/c mice were OVA-sensitized on day zero and 7th (50 μg/mL OVA in 10 mg/mL Al (OH)3) and OVA-challenged (5 mg/mL, 20 μL/animal) for three weeks. In the last week, the animals were dally challenged with aerosol of OVA and the carvo treatment (12.5, 25 or 50 mg/kg) occurred one hour before each OVA-challenge. Data were analyzed and p < 0.05 was considered significant. Carvo (12.5-50 mg/kg) decreased significantly the eosinophil migration into the nasal (NALF) and bronchoalveolar (BALF) cavities as well as on the nasal and lung tissues of sick animals. The treatment also decreased mucus production on both tissue sections stained with PAS (periodic acid-Schiff satin). In addition, the histological analyzes demonstrated that sick mice presented hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the lung smooth muscle layer followed by increasing of extracellular matrix and carvo (50 mg/kg) inhibited these asthmatic parameters. We analyzed the allergic rhinitis signals as nasal frictions and sneezing and observed that carvo decreased these two signals as well as serum OVA-specific IgE titer, type 2 cytokine synthesis, mainly IL-13, with increasing of IL-10 production. Decreasing of IL-13 production corroborated with decreasing of mucus production and these effects were dependent on p38MAPK/NF-κB(p65) signaling pathway inhibition. Therefore, these data demonstrated that a monoterpene of essential oils presents anti-allergic property on an experimental model of CARAS suggesting a new drug prototype to treat this allergic syndrome., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: The purpose was to compare the visual, refractive and aberrometric results of intrastromal corneal ring segments implantation with manual dissection and femtosecond laser-assisted surgery., Methods: This is a multicentre study, which included consecutive patients with paracentral keratoconus, in which the difference between the axes of the topographic flattest and the coma aberration was <60°, who had Ferrara-type intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation using manual dissection or femtosecond laser technique. LogMAR uncorrected (uncorrected distance visual acuity) and corrected (corrected distance visual acuity) distance visual acuity, refractive errors and the root mean square for corneal coma-like aberration were recorded before and at 6 months after surgery., Results: The study included 84 and 110 eyes in the manual group and in the femtosecond group, respectively. After surgery, there was a statistically significant improvement in uncorrected distance visual acuity and corrected distance visual acuity for both groups ( p  < 0.0001), and there were no statistically significant differences between groups ( p  > 0.3). For both groups, there was a reduction in spherical equivalent after intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation ( p  < 0.0001). There were no statistically significant differences between groups in the magnitude of spherical equivalent reduction ( p  = 0.34) The magnitude of the root mean square coma-like reduction was 0.93 ± 0.76 and 0.83 ± 0.80 μm in the manual and femtosecond group, respectively ( p  = 0.2). While in the femtosecond laser group no complications were reported, in the manual group, the intraoperative or postoperative complications rate was 13.09%., Conclusion: Although both surgical techniques provide comparable visual, refractive and aberrometric outcomes, it should be noted that the femtosecond laser is a safer surgical procedure, with no complications reported.

We show an annual overview of the sea-air CO 2 exchanges and primary drivers in the Gerlache Strait, a hotspot for climate change that is ecologically important in the northern Antarctic Peninsula. In autumn and winter, episodic upwelling events increase the remineralized carbon in the sea surface, leading the region to act as a moderate or strong CO 2 source to the atmosphere of up to 40 mmol m -2  day -1 . During summer and late spring, photosynthesis decreases the CO 2 partial pressure in the surface seawater, enhancing ocean CO 2 uptake, which reaches values higher than - 40 mmol m -2  day -1 . Thus, autumn/winter CO 2 outgassing is nearly balanced by an only 4-month period of intense ocean CO 2 ingassing during summer/spring. Hence, the estimated annual net sea-air CO 2 flux from 2002 to 2017 was 1.24 ± 4.33 mmol m -2  day -1 , opposing the common CO 2 sink behaviour observed in other coastal regions around Antarctica. The main drivers of changes in the surface CO 2 system in this region were total dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity, revealing dominant influences of both physical and biological processes. These findings demonstrate the importance of Antarctica coastal zones as summer carbon sinks and emphasize the need to better understand local/regional seasonal sensitivity to the net CO 2 flux effect on the Southern Ocean carbon cycle, especially considering the impacts caused by climate change.

Objectives: Data on baseline drug resistance important in informing future antimicrobial stewardship programs. So far, no data on the antimicrobial drug resistance of clinical isolates available for the African archipelago of Cabo Verde., Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis over years (2013-17) of the drug susceptibility profiles of clinical isolates in the two main hospitals of Cabo Verde. For Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, representing 47% and 26% of all clinical isolates, the antimicrobial drug resistance profile was reported for six representative drugs., Results: For E. coli we detected an increase in resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin and trimethoprim-and for S. aureus to methicillin, erythromycin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. This increase in both the most commonly isolated bacterial pathogens is alarm as it might compromise empirical treatment in a setting with limited access to laboratory testing., Conclusions: When compared to the published low resistance rates in carriage isolates, the more alarming situation in clinical isolates for S. aureus might encourage antimicrobial stewardship programs to reduce in hospital settings, possibly as part of the Cabo Verdean national plan against antimicrobial drug resistance., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest Authors declare no competing interest with respect to the work performed in the manuscript., (Copyright © 2020 The Author(s). The integration of normative and descriptive analyses of decision processes in humans struggles with the fact that measuring preferences by different procedures yields different rankings and that humans appear irrationally impulsive (namely, show maladaptive preference for immediacy). Failure of procedure invariance has led to the widespread hypothesis that preferences are constructed "on the spot" by cognitive evaluations performed at choice time, implying that choices should take extra time in order to perform the necessary comparisons. We examine this issue in experiments with starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and show that integrating normative and descriptive arguments is possible and may help reinterpreting human decision results. Our main findings are that (1) ranking alternatives through direct rating (response time) accurately predicts preference in choice, overcoming failures of procedure invariance; (2) preference is not constructed at choice time nor does it involve extra time (we show that the opposite is true); and (3) starlings' choices are not irrationally impulsive but are instead directly interpretable in terms of profitability ranking. Like all nonhuman research, our protocols examine decisions by experience rather than by description, and hence support the conjecture that irrationalities that prevail in research with humans may not be observed in decisions by experience protocols., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The photophysical properties of iridium(III) porphyrins complexes with two different axial ligands (Cl(CO) and bipyridine (bpy)) in solution and in cellulose acetate polymer matrix were investigated. The axial ligands substitution was made aiming to evaluate the photophysical properties and the solubility in different solvents. Therefore, dissimilar from the free porphyrin, non-polar solvents (as toluene) favours the quantum yield of iridium(III)porphyrins and ligands with a more extended π-conjugated compound as bpy results in higher yields. Moreover, despite all the porphyrins reveals a negative solvatochromism, the substitution of Cl(CO) ligand by bpy ligand exhibits similar solubility either on non-polar or polar solvents. The observed photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature appears at NIR region in contrast to the previously reported iridium(III) porphyrins. Comparing with free porphyrin H 2 TTP, the red/NIR PL spectra of the iridium(III)porphyrins (either in solution and in the polymer matrix) reveals remarkable changes. AIntroduction: Doege-Potter's syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome, consisting in hypoglycemia and solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. These tumors represent < 5% of all pleural tumours and can only be cured by surgery. In this article, we report a case of a patient presenting with severe hypoglycemia, as the only symptom, and a mass occupying the entire left hemithorax. Case presentation: A54 year old female with severe hypoglycemia, a chest radiography with almost total opacification of the left hemithorax and a computed tomography scan with a mass in the left hemithorax. Surgery was performed and a mass with 30cm × 18cm × 11cm weighing 3195g was resected. The postoperative course was uneventful with immediate resolution of the hypoglycemia. The immunohistochemistry diagnosis was solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. Conclusions: Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura are very rare. Less than 5% are associated with hypoglycemia, taking the form of Doege-Potter Syndrome. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy have shown low response rate and complete surgical resection is the only procedure that offers cure. This case reports describes a rare giant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with severe hypoglycemia, successfully treated by surgery. Long-term follow-up of the patient after the surgery is necessary for detection of any possible recurrence.

In order to run a series of in vitro studies on the effect of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields on cell cultures, developing and characterizing an appropriate exposure system is required. The present design is based on a two-shielded Lee-Whiting coils system. The circular design was chosen because its axial symmetry allowed for both reducing simulation unknowns and measurement points during the characterization, and additionally made the machining of the parts easier. The system can generate magnetic flux densities (B fields) up to 1 mT root-mean-square amplitude (rms) with no active cooling system in the incubator, and up to 3 mT rms with it. The double-wrapped windings with twisted pairs allow for the use of each set of coils either as exposure or control with no detectable parasitic B field in the control. The artifacts have also been analyzed; the B field in the center of the sham control chamber is about 1 µT rms for a maximum of 3 mT rms in the exposure chamber, the parasitic incident electric fields are less than 1 V/m, the temperature difference between sham and exposure chamber is less than or equal to 0.2 °C, and the typical vibration difference between sham and exposure is less than 0.1 m/s 2 . © 2020 Bioelectromagnetics Society., (© 2020 Bioelectromagnetics Society.)

ZnO/ZnO2 composites grown by hydrothermal synthesis at low temperature (180 °C) and thermally annealed at 300 °C were fully analysed by morphological, structural and optical techniques. X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy clearly evidence the presence of both crystalline phases in the ZnO/ZnO2 sample. The differential scanning calorimetry analysis and thermogravimetric profiles indicate an exothermic event with a peak temperature ca. 225 °C, which is accompanied by a 8.5% weight loss, being attributed to the crystallization of ZnO from ZnO2. Upon a thermal annealing treatment at 300 °C the ZnO2 phase was completely converted into ZnO, as measured by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Photoluminescence investigations reveal that the emission is dominated by a broad band recombination in both samples, due to the overlapping of different emitting centres, and that the peak position of the PL emission is dependent on the excitation density. The ZnO/ZnO2 sample exhibits a widening of the bandgap when compared to the one only containing ZnO, likely related to the presence of the additional ZnO2 phase and suggesting a bandgap energy of ~3.42 eV for this compound. Surface analysis revealed that the sample exhibits a surface area of 90 m2 g-1, which decreases to 30 m2 g-1 after the thermal annealing and the full conversion into ZnO. This difference in the surface area showed particular relevance in the stability of the measured optical properties. Particularly, the intensity of the photoluminescence signal was seen to be higher in the ZnO/ZnO2 sample and strongly dependent on the measurement atmosphere, highlighting its potential to be employed in the fabrication of optical-based sensing systems for environmental applications, namely in gas sensors.

3D networks of Al-doped ZnO tetrapods decorated with ZnAl 2 O 4 particles synthesised by the flame transport method were investigated in detail using optical techniques combined with morphological/structural characterisation. Low temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements revealed spectra dominated by near band edge (NBE) recombination in the UV region, together with broad visible bands whose peak positions shift depending on the ZnO : Al mixing ratios. A close inspection of the NBE region evidences the effective doping of the ZnO structures with Al, as corroborated by the broadening and shift of its peak position towards the expected energy associated with the exciton bound to Al. Both temperature and excitation density-dependent PL results pointed to an overlap of multiple optical centres contributing to the broad visible band, with the peak position dependent on the Al content. While in the reference sample the wavelength of the green band remained unchanged with temperature, in the case of the composites, the deep level emission showed a blue shift with increasing temperature, likely due to distinct thermal quenching of the overlapping emitting centres. This assumption was further validated by the time-resolved PL data, which clearly exposed the presence of more than one optical centre in this spectral region. PL excitation analysis demonstrated that the luminescence features of the Al-doped ZnO/ZnAl 2 O 4 composites revealed noticeable changes not only in deep level recombination, but also in the material's bandgap when compared with the ZnO reference sample. At room temperature, the ZnO reference sample exhibited free exciton resonance at ∼3.29 eV, whereas the peak position for the Al-doped ZnO/ZnAl 2 O 4 samples occurred at ∼3.38 eV due to the Burstein-Moss shift, commonly observed in heavily doped semiconductors. Considering the energy shift observed and assuming a parabolic conduction band, a carrier concentration of ∼1.82 ×10 19 cm -3 was estimated for the Al-doped ZnO/ZnAl 2 O 4 samples., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Purpose : To compare the incidence of complications between manual and femtosecond-laser assisted surgery for intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) implantation. Material and methods : This study included keratoconus patients who had ICRS implantation using manual dissection and using the femtosecond laser with a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Uncorrected (UDVA) corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuity (CDVA), refraction, corneal topography and aberrometry, pachymetry map and slit-lamp microscopy were assessed before and after surgery. Results : The study included 265 eyes in the manual group and 111 in the femtosecond laser group. In the manual group, there were complications in 48 eyes (18.11%); while in the femtosecond laser 4 eyes had a complication (3.6%). In the manual group, the most frequent complications were ICRS exchange/adjustment for visual and refractive enhancement (25 eyes; 9.43%) and late ICRS spontaneous extrusion (15 eyes; 5.66%). In the manual group, 81.25% of complications were observed during the first 3 years of surgeon's experience. Eyes who suffered a complication had preoperatively higher mean refractive ( p = .002) and topographic cylinder ( p = .003) and lower UDVA ( p = .005) and CDVA ( p = .002). After a second surgical procedure for complication management visual, refractive and topographic outcomes significantly improved. Conclusion : Manual mechanical ICRS surgery shows a higher rate of intra- and postoperative mechanical and refractive complications when compared to femtosecond laser assisted technique. The incidence is specially higher during the surgeon's first years of implementation of the technique.
