Background: The list of medical devices (MD) eligible for reimbursement under the Compulsory Health Insurance in Morocco is set by Ministerial Order comprising 869 items between life-support equipment, external prostheses, and implants. The objective of the present study is to analyze the nomenclature of implantable medical devices (IMD) appearing on this list and compare them with the global nomenclature of MD (GMDN) and the European nomenclature of MD (EMDN)., Methods: The study deals with (i) the mapping of the codes of the IMD list with 170 DM per cardinality and (ii) a metric identification by Sørensen-Dice coefficient of terminological similarity of the IMD with respect to the two databases., Results: The 170 IMD codes are mapped onto 493 terms in the GMDN and 344 terms in the EMDN. The 37.7% of implants are mapped to more than or equal to 2 terms of GMDN while 36.5% are mapped to more than or equal to 2 terms to the EMDN. The comparison of cardinality distributions has revealed no significant difference (P=0.430) between the two databases. This research focuses on an Iranian industrial area with a long history of oil contamination where oil spills occurred over time. Multiple techniques were utilized to determine the contamination source, including chemical, hydrogeological, and geological methods. The results indicated that the main reason for the leak was the rupture of several underground oil pipelines. After repairing the leaking points, the oil skimming method was used for site remediation. A new technique for detecting new live oil spills during remediation was identified using the Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (LNAPL) Distribution and Recovery Model (LDRM). Sperm cryopreservation in small ruminant is an efficient strategy to distribute spermatozoa for reproductive programmes, but this process reduces the fertility potential of frozen-thawed spermatozoa. The aim of the current research was to evaluate the impact of different concentrations of cysteamine (CYS) in soybean lecithin (SL)-based medium on postthawed buck semen quality and fertility potential. Semen samples were collected from five bucks, twice a week, then diluted in the SL-based extender containing different concentrations of CYS as follows: extender containing 0 mM (control, C0), 1 mM (C1), 2 mM (C2), 4 mM (C4) and 8 mM (C8) CYS. Motility characteristics, membrane integrity, abnormal morphology, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity, viability, apoptotic-like changes, lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation, ROS concentration, pregnancy rate and kidding rate were evaluated after freeze-thaw process. In results, C1 resulted in greater (p ≤ 0.05) total motility, progressive motility, average path velocity, membrane integrity, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity, viability, pregnancy rate and kidding rate compared to the other groups. Furthermore, supplementation of freezing medium with 1 mM of CYS presented lower (p ≤ 0.05) apoptotic-like changes, lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation and ROS concentration compared to the other groups. On the other hand, C8 presented the least (p ≤ 0.05) total motility, progressive motility, average path velocity, membrane integrity, mitochondrial activity, acrosome integrity and viability as well as the highest (p ≤ 0.05) apoptotic-like changes, lipid peroxidation, DNA fragmentation and ROS concentration compared to the other groups. Therefore, supplementation of freezing medium with 1 mM CYS could be a helpful strategy to protect buck's spermatozoa quality and fertility potential during cryopreservation process., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH. Background: Adolescent pregnancy is a main health concern in relation to adolescent mothers and their neonates especially in deprived areas., Aim: This study aimed to explore the experiences of adolescent mothers who live in deprived marginal areas in Urmia in Iran., Methods: This qualitative study was conducted in 2022-2023 using the conventional content analysis approach. Participants were eighteen adolescent mothers purposefully selected from healthcare centers in marginal areas in Urmia. Objective: Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is defined as two or more pregnancy losses before 24 gestational weeks, accounting for 1-3% of fertile couples. A vast majority of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in some microRNA ( miRNA ) genes can change the miRNA-mRNA interaction and are associated with the risk of RSA. This study was designed to better elucidate the association between miR-27a, miR-499, and miR-146a polymorphisms and RSA risk., Materials and Methods: SNP genotyping of miR-27a (rs895819), miR-499 (rs3746444), and miR-146a (rs2910164) was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism and tetra amplification-refractory mutation system PCR in 98 patients with RSA and 105 healthy subjects., Results: Our results showed that the miR-499 rs3746444 and miR-27a rs895819 polymorphisms were significantly associated with RSA risk, whereas no significant differences were observed between the rs2910164 polymorphism and RSA susceptibility., Conclusion: We proposed that the miR-499 rs3746444 and miR-27a rs895819 polymorphisms were correlated with RSA in our population, but the miR-146a rs2910164 variant was not associated with the risk of RSA., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest: No conflict of interest was declared by the authors., (Copyright© 2024 The Author. Background: Tinted sunscreens not only shield against UV rays but also provide protection against visible light, as opposed to traditional sunscreens. Universal tinted sunscreens are marketed to complement all skin tones., Objective: To assess color match and subject satisfaction for 7 universal tinted sunscreens across various price ranges in all Fitzpatrick skin phototypes (SPT)., Methods: Products A-G were applied at concentrations of 1 and 2 mg/cm 2 on the dorsal arms of 30 subjects spanning SPT I-VI. Photography, colorimetry, and subject and investigator surveys were utilized to determine color match., Results: Using colorimetry analysis at the recommended 2 mg/cm 2 concentration, two of seven products were identified as suitable matches for SPT I-II, while six out of seven were determined to be a good match for SPT III-IV. However, only one product was found to be a good match for SPT V-VI at the recommended concentration according to colorimetry results., Conclusion: Universal tinted sunscreens do not provide an adequate color match for all skin phototypes, especially for individuals with very fair or very dark skin tones., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterized by the loss of melanocytes, resulting in white patches on the skin. While its exact cause is unknown, it's believed to be an autoimmune disorder involving genetic, environmental, and immunologic factors. Various treatments, including topical drugs, phototherapy, and surgery, exist, but further research is needed for more targeted therapies. Standardization of treatment goals and outcome measures is crucial. Future directions involve personalized treatments based on genetic and immunologic profiles, along with advancements in melanocyte biology for more effective therapies. High-grade glioma (HGG) is an aggressive brain tumor. Sex is an important factor that differentially affects survival outcomes in HGG. We used an end-to-end deep learning approach on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) scans to (i) identify sex-specific histopathological attributes of the tumor microenvironment (TME), and (ii) create sex-specific risk profiles to prognosticate overall survival. Surgically resected H&E-stained tissue slides were analyzed in a two-stage approach using ResNet18 deep learning models, first, to segment the viable tumor regions and second, to build sex-specific prognostic models for prediction of overall survival. Our mResNet-Cox model yielded C-index (0.696, 0.736, 0.731, and 0.729) for the female cohort and C-index (0.729, 0.738, 0.724, and 0.696) for the male cohort across training and three independent validation cohorts, respectively. End-to-end deep learning approaches using routine H&E-stained slides, trained separately on male and female patients with HGG, may allow for identifying sex-specific histopathological attributes of the TME associated with survival and, ultimately, build patient-centric prognostic risk assessment models.

Introduction: This study measures the COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (CVE) against hospital admission and severe COVID-19., Methods: This study is a test-negative case-control design using data from eight provinces in April, 2021 until March, 2022. The individuals were classified as cases and controls based on the results of the RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 and matched based on the timing of the test being conducted as well as the timing of hospital admission. The measure of association was an odds ratio (OR) by univariate and multiple logistic regression. The multiple logistic regression has been carried out to take confounding factors and potential effect modifiers into account. The CVE was computed as CVE = (1 - OR)*100 with 95% confidence interval., Results: Among 19314 admitted patients, of whom 13216 (68.4%) were cases and 6098 (31.6%) were controls, 1313 (6.8%) died. From total, 5959 (30.8%) patients had received the vaccine in which one, two, and booster doses were 2443 (12.6%), 2796 (14.5٪), and 720 (3.7٪), respectively. The estimated adjusted effectiveness of only one dose, two doses and booter vaccination were 22% (95% CI: 14%-29%), 35% (95% CI: 29%-41%) and 33% (95% CI: 16%-47%), respectively. Objective: A de novo antineoplastic drug was planned to suppress and modulate the Head, Neck, and Oral Cancer., Methods: Using the computational software tools including molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD), and post-molecular dynamics bond contact analyses, it has been shown that the new drug called ''Innovative Head, Neck, and Oral Cancer Suppressor'', or simply abbreviated as "IHNOCS" is very effective in terms of suppressing and co-modulating TGF-β and KRTAP2-3 together., Result: The drug suppresses the KRTAP2-3 protein activity while also holding onto TGF-β and modulating it to slow down and halt the metastasis., Conclusion: We have effectively created a novel medication using principles of theoretical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry and organic chemistry and organic chemistry to inhibit Head, Neck, and Oral Cancer. This medication should further undergo experimental testing in various stages, including in vitro, in vivo, and human clinical phases. It exhibits significant effectiveness in inhibiting the progression of cancer by simultaneously targeting TGF-β and KRTAP2-3, thereby impeding metastasis and suppressing the disease.

Neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection (HSV infection in infants less than 6 weeks of age) is rare but mortality and morbidity rates are high after disseminated disease and encephalitis. In France, the epidemiology is poorly described, and two decades ago, incidence was estimated to be 3 per 100,000 live births a year. We describe determinants, epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of neonatal HSV infection in a managed-care population attending in two major obstetric and paediatric centres, Paris, France, over a 10-year period. This retrospective case series study was conducted from 2013 to 2023, in infants less than 42 days of age who had virologically confirmed HSV infection. We report an overall rate of neonatal herpes of 5.5 per 100,000 live births a year and an incidence of symptomatic cases of 1.2 per 100,000 live births a year. HSV-1 was the major serotype involved (84.2%) and post-natal acquisition through the orolabial route reached 63.2%. All neonates who had neonatal HSV PCR screening (owing to clinical signs in parents) and who received prompt acyclovir treatment remained asymptomatic. Symptomatic forms accounted for 21.1% cases of the total and mortality was high (62.5% of symptomatic forms).   Conclusion: This case series confirms that neonates at risk for HSV disease and poor outcome are those born to HSV-seronegative mothers, preterm infants, and those who received acyclovir after onset of symptoms (mainly because mothers did not present evidence of acute HSV infection). Our study confirms the major role of HSV-1 and the frequency of its early post-natal acquisition. What is known: • Neonatal herpes simplex virus infection is rare but motality and morbidity rates are high after disseminted disease and encephalitis. National recommendations exist worldwide but mangement of this disease is not always easy. What is new: • As in France epidemiology of neonatal herpes is poorly described, our report is potentially an important addition to the existing literature. Nature has been a rich source of pharmaceutical compounds, producing 80% of our currently prescribed drugs. The feijoa plant, Acca sellowiana, is classified in the family Myrtaceae, native to South America, and currently grown worldwide to produce feijoa fruit. Feijoa is a rich source of bioactive compounds with anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal activities; however, the mechanism of action of these compounds is largely not known. Here, we used chemical genetic analyses in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae to investigate the mechanism of action of a feijoa-derived ethanol adduct of vescalagin (EtOH-vescalagin). Genome-wide barcode sequencing analysis revealed yeast strains lacking genes in iron metabolism, zinc metabolism, retromer function, or mitochondrial function were hypersensitive to 0.3 µM EtOH-vescalagin. This treatment increased expression of iron uptake proteins at the plasma membrane, which was a compensatory response to reduced intracellular iron. Likewise, EtOH-vescalagin increased expression of the Cot1 protein in the vacuolar membrane that transports zinc into the vacuole to prevent cytoplasmic accumulation of zinc. Each individual subunit in the retromer complex was required for the iron homeostatic mechanism of EtOH-vescalagin, while only the cargo recognition component in the retromer complex was required for the zinc homeostatic mechanism. Overexpression of either retromer subunits or high-affinity iron transporters suppressed EtOH-vescalagin bioactivity in a zinc-replete condition, while overexpression of only retromer subunits increased EtOH-vescalagin bioactivity in a zinc-deficient condition. Together, these results indicate that EtOH-vescalagin bioactivity begins with extracellular iron chelation and proceeds with intracellular transport of zinc via the retromer complex. Background: Cherubism is known as a very rare autosomal dominant familial disorder of childhood caused by a mutation in the SH3BP2 gene on 4p16.3. It has not yet been observed at birth and is usually diagnosed in children aged 2-7. Here, we present a non-hereditary case of cherubism at a very early age., Case Presentation: A 6-month-old girl presented with bilateral progressive jaw enlargement. On physical examination, bilateral asymmetrical jaw enlargement, predominantly on the left side, and some enlarged, non-tender, mobile submandibular lymph nodes were detected. No other abnormality was observed. Further investigations with radiology suggested cherubism and Burkitt's lymphoma as differential diagnoses. Later on, histopathologic evaluations were suggestive of cherubism. No surgical interventions were indicated, and the child is on regular follow-ups., Conclusion: Non-hereditary Cherubism, despite scarcity, can present in children below two years of age, even as early as the beginning of primary dentition. Accurate and swift diagnosis is essential to avert physical and psychological complications. He was conscious with no focal neurological deficits. His brain MRI revealed an enhancable bifrontal tumor originating from falx cerebri and superior sagittal sinus dura. Due to the patient's preference and decline for gross total resection, she underwent a stereotactic biopsy. The pathology was positive for Rosai-Dorfman diseases. He received definitive targeted radiation with a total dose of 4500 cGy administered in 200 cGy daily fractions. This study investigated batch-fed vermicomposting of cow manure, with a specific focus on assessing the effects of tylosin on the weight of earthworms and the overall quality of the resulting manure. Five reactors, including three concentrations of tylosin (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg) and two control reactors, were employed. Residual tylosin concentrations were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Quality parameters such as pH, temperature, volatile solids (VS), organic carbon content (OCC), electrical conductivity (EC), ash content, C/N ratio, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and microbial content were evaluated. The toxicity and maturity of vermicompost were assessed by determining the germination index (GI). The study also monitored variations in the earthworm's weight. The results demonstrated a decreasing trend in VS, OCC, C/N, and fecal coliforms, along with increased pH, EC, ash content, and TKN during the vermicomposting process. Furthermore, investigations revealed significant reductions in the reactors with tylosin concentrations of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg, resulting in the removal of 98%, 90.48%, and 89.38% of the initial tylosin, respectively. This result confirms the faster removal of tylosin in reactors with lower concentrations. Degradation of tylosin also conforms to first-order kinetics. The findings showed a significant influence of tylosin on the weight of Eisenia fetida earthworms and the lowest antibiotic concentration led to the highest weight gain. The recent scientific focus on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has stemmed from their recognized genotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. This systematic review seeks to evaluate the nexus between exposure to water sources contaminated with PAHs and the associated cancer risk among global populations, encompassing both children and adults. Web of Science (WoS), Cochrane Library, PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Google Scholar, were searched following the PRISMA guidelines, until December 31, 2023. Quality assessment of the selected studies was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The increased lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) attributed to PAH exposure through ingestion and dermal absorption was thoroughly examined across diverse age groups. After extensive searching, screening, and eligibility, 30 articles were included in this review, which was conducted in different parts of the world, including Nigeria (n = 11), China (n = 7), India (n = 4), Iran (n = 3), South Africa (n = 2), Italy (n = 1), Colombia (n = 1), and Iraq (n = 1). Our analysis underscores Nigeria's alarming prevalence of PAH contamination in its rivers, groundwaters, and seawater. Remarkably, the highest cancer risk was identified among children and adults, notably in proximity to the Atlas Cove jetty (seawater) and various Nigerian rivers. This elevated risk is primarily attributed to the combined effects of ingestion and dermal absorption. Furthermore, our findings emphasize the prominent role of combustion-derived and pyrogenic sources of PAH in the examined aquatic ecosystems. This study unequivocally establishes that PAH-contaminated water sources significantly amplify the risk of cancer among both children and adults. The extent of risk variation is influenced by the specific water source, duration of exposure, and age group. Herein, the application of granular activated carbon, jujube, and barberry tree stem powder for the removal of gasoline and kerosene from water was investigated. Kerosene removal rates upwards of 68.48, 83.87, and 99.02% were achieved using jujube tree stem powder, barberry tree stem powder, and granular activated carbon, respectively. Besides, gasoline removal rates upwards of 69.35, 55.02, and 95.59% were attained using jujube tree stem powder, barberry tree stem powder, and granular activated carbon, respectively. Isotherm data were further investigated and fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Elovich models. The results indicated that the adsorption onto jujube adsorbent is a multilayer adsorption process over a heterogeneous surface, which is best illustrated by the Temkin (Ave. R 2 = 0.95) model. It was found that the Temkin isotherm (Ave. R 2 = 0.81) best describes the properties of barberry stem powder in the adsorption of gasoline and kerosene from water. Moreover, the best models to describe the characteristics of granular activated carbon in the adsorption of gasoline and kerosene from water were Freundlich (Ave. R 2 = 0.74) and Langmuir (Ave. R 2 = 0.73) isotherms, respectively. The adsorption kinetics showed that the pseudo-second-order was appropriate in modeling the adsorption kinetics of gasoline and kerosene to the studied adsorbents ( R 2 >0.74).

Background: Biosafety and efficacy are essential aspects in the use of implantable medical devices (IMD) in several medical and surgical disciplines. To this effect, and depending on the therapeutic indication, the diversity of IMD imposes enormous evaluation strategies from their design through to their impact on improving the patient's quality of life., Objective: To elaborate cartography which traces back the research tracks published on IMD regarding the three Maghreb countries, namely Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, and this through laying emphasis on a comparative study in view of highlighting the similarities and differences between them., Methods: First, the research work was concerned with studies on IMD published between 2013 and 2023, which met the inclusion criteria, and which used the above-mentioned keywords on the four databases Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect and PubMed. Second, the results are processed for a comparative descriptive study. In second, a descriptive and inferential analysis of association and classification to establish a research map on IMD., Results: Articles selected; 86 articles out of 1081 for Morocco, 70 out of 900 for Algeria and 136 out of 1303 for Tunisia. Antibiotic resistance (AR) is a major global health concern, but current surveillance efforts primarily focus on healthcare settings, leaving a lack of understanding about AR across all sectors of the One Health approach. To bridge this gap, wastewater surveillance provides a cost-effective and efficient method for monitoring AR within a population. In this study, we implemented a surveillance program by monitoring the wastewater effluent from two large-scale municipal treatment plants situated in Isfahan, a central region of Iran. These treatment plants covered distinct catchment regions and served a combined population about two million of residents. Furthermore, the effect of physicochemical and microbial characteristics of wastewater effluent including biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), temperature, total coliforms and Escherichia coli concentration on the abundance of ARGs ( bla CTX-M , tet W, sul 1, cml A, and erm B) and class 1 integron-integrase gene ( intI 1) were investigated. Sul 1 and bla CTX-M were the most and least abundant ARGs in the two WWTPs, respectively. Principal Component Analysis showed that in both of the WWTPs all ARGs and intI 1 gene abundance were positively correlated with effluent temperature, but all other effluent characteristics (BOD, COD, TSS, total coliforms and E. coli ) showed no significant correlation with ARGs abundance. Temperature could affect the performance of conventional activated sludge process, which in turn could affect the abundance of ARGs. The results of this study suggest that other factors than BOD, COD and TSS may affect the ARGs abundance. Therapeutic compliance (TC) refers to the patient's compliance with the prescriptions and recommendations of a doctor. Patients with cancer often exhibit unsatisfactory TC. The objective of our study was to assess TC levels in cancer patients and identify predictors of poor compliance. The authors conducted a cross-sectional study in March 2023 at the oncology centre, where the vast majority of medical activity is performed in the day hospital. TC was measured using a questionnaire or survey. Various parameters were analyzed to identify predictive factors of poor therapeutic compliance. The authors' study included 175 cancer patients with a mean age of 55 years. The study revealed that 85% exhibited good compliance (GC) as indicated by the CI [8.500 ± 0.075], signifying patients who consistently adhered to their medication schedule. Conversely, 15% demonstrated poor compliance (PC), as indicated by the confidence interval [0.825 ± 0.750]. Compliance status was assessed by considering patients who adhered to the prescribed medication timing as good compliance (GC) and those who did not adhere as poor compliance (PC). The analysis of our study results indicated that poor therapeutic compliance was associated with low socio-economic and educational levels. Therefore, it is important to utilize all available resources to improve therapeutic compliance. UNC93B1 is critical for trafficking and function of nucleic acid-sensing Toll-like receptors (TLRs) TLR3, TLR7, TLR8, and TLR9, which are essential for antiviral immunity. Overactive TLR7 signaling induced by recognition of self-nucleic acids has been implicated in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Here, we report UNC93B1 variants (E92G and R336L) in four patients with early-onset SLE. Patient cells or mouse macrophages carrying the UNC93B1 variants produced high amounts of TNF-α and IL-6 and upon stimulation with TLR7/TLR8 agonist, but not with TLR3 or TLR9 agonists. E92G causes UNC93B1 protein instability and reduced interaction with TLR7, leading to selective TLR7 hyperactivation with constitutive type I IFN signaling. Thus, UNC93B1 regulates TLR subtype-specific mechanisms of ligand recognition. Our findings establish a pivotal role for UNC93B1 in TLR7-dependent autoimmunity and highlight the therapeutic potential of targeting TLR7 in SLE.

Fahr's disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder with brain calcifications and neuropsychiatric symptoms. It can have variable phenotypic expression and intermittent symptomatology, making diagnosis challenging. In this report, we describe a young female patient presenting with symptoms of psychosis and confusion, which could be indicative of a delirium superimposed on the cerebral vulnerability associated with Fahr's disease. Notably, about two years prior, she experienced multiple episodes of tonic-clonic seizures that spontaneously resolved without pharmacological intervention. She had no previous psychiatric history. Following comprehensive investigations, other organic causes were ruled out, and Fahr's disease was diagnosed based on bilateral symmetrical brain calcifications seen on a head CT scan. Her treatment regimen encompassed antipsychotics and anticonvulsants. This case highlights the importance of considering Fahr's disease as a differential diagnosis in patients with new-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms. The case also explores the atypical early onset and intermittent nature of symptoms in the absence of a positive family history, highlighting the complexity of Fahr's disease. A multidisciplinary approach and regular follow-up are crucial for optimizing patient care and monitoring disease progression. Further research is needed to enhance our understanding of Fahr's disease and develop standardized treatment strategies for this rare condition.

Background: The aggregation of clonal plasma cells causes plasma cell neoplasms, which vary in severity and clinical outcomes. The present research focused on the epidemiological, clinical, immunologic, and cytogenetic characteristics of plasma cell neoplasms., Methods: In this five-year retrospective cross-sectional study, demographic information such as age and sex, calcium elevation, renal insufficiency, anemia, and bone lesion (CRAB) characteristics, as well as laboratory data including bone marrow and peripheral blood film results, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and cytogenetic study outcomes were collected at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics software (version 20.0). Descriptive statistics were reported as numbers, percentages, and mean±SD., Results: 417 newly diagnosed plasma cell neoplasm patients were confirmed by bone marrow or other tissue biopsy tests. 279 patients were men (66.9%). The most prevalent age group was 60-64 years old (18.46%). Plasma cell myeloma (PCM) affected 355 (85.13%) patients, while monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) affected 6 (1.43%) patients. Solitary plasmacytoma was seen in 56 (13.42%) patients. At the time of diagnosis, 119 (33.52%) of 355 PCM patients were asymptomatic, whereas 236 (66.47%) patients had at least one CRAB symptom, 55 (15.49%) had two or more, and 14 (3.94%) had three or more. There were 7 (1.97%) cases of amyloidosis. Cytogenetic abnormalities were found in 51.28% (40/78) of the patients. Twenty-one individuals (52.5%) were hyperdiploid with multiple trisomy, while 19 (47.50%) were not., Conclusion: When diagnosed, Iranian PCM patients might have more advanced disease. Bioinformatics has revolutionized biology and medicine by using computational methods to analyze and interpret biological data. Quantum mechanics has recently emerged as a promising tool for the analysis of biological systems, leading to the development of quantum bioinformatics. This new field employs the principles of quantum mechanics, quantum algorithms, and quantum computing to solve complex problems in molecular biology, drug design, and protein folding. However, the intersection of bioinformatics, biology, and quantum mechanics presents unique challenges. One significant challenge is the possibility of confusion among scientists between quantum bioinformatics and quantum biology, which have similar goals and concepts. Additionally, the diverse calculations in each field make it difficult to establish boundaries and identify purely quantum effects from other factors that may affect biological processes. This review provides an overview of the concepts of quantum biology and quantum mechanics and their intersection in quantum bioinformatics. We examine the challenges and unique features of this field and propose a classification of quantum bioinformatics to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerate progress. Ohmic heating is an emerging direct thermal technology, which uses electricity to heat food products volumetrically. Ohmic heating provides thermal and non-thermal effects like electropermeabilization to inactivate microorganisms. In this study, ohmic heating was used to inactivate Byssochlamys fulva in tomato juice. The main and interaction effects of initial pH (3.5 and 4.5) and voltage gradient (15 and 20 V/cm) were investigated on mold inactivation during ohmic heating at 88, 93, and 98 °C for 20, 10 and 5 min, respectively. The pH, acidity, total soluble solids, and D value were compared. The results showed that pH and voltage gradient had significant effects on D value and Z value ( p  < 0.05). Background: The role of immune cells in collagen degradation within the tumor microenvironment (TME) is unclear. Immune cells, particularly tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), are known to alter the extracellular matrix, affecting cancer progression and patient survival. However, the quantitative evaluation of the immune modulatory impact on collagen architecture within the TME remains limited., Methods: We introduce CollaTIL, a computational pathology method that quantitatively characterizes the immune-collagen relationship within the TME of gynecologic cancers, including high-grade serous ovarian (HGSOC), cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), and endometrial carcinomas. CollaTIL aims to investigate immune modulatory impact on collagen architecture within the TME, aiming to uncover the interplay between the immune system and tumor progression., Results: We observe that an increased immune infiltrate is associated with chaotic collagen architecture and higher entropy, while immune sparse TME exhibits ordered collagen and lower entropy. Importantly, CollaTIL-associated features that stratify disease risk are linked with gene signatures corresponding to TCA-Cycle in CSCC, and amino acid metabolism, and macrophages in HGSOC., Conclusions: CollaTIL uncovers a relationship between immune infiltration and collagen structure in the TME of gynecologic cancers. Background: The maternal mortality rate in the United States is high and disparities among non-Hispanic White and non-Hispanic Black women remain. In the State of Georgia, the pregnancy-related death rate is among the worst in the nation., Objective: To examine current pregnancy-related deaths in the State of Georgia using measures of timing and cause-specific mortality across maternal sociodemographic characteristics., Design: This cross-sectional study of pregnancy-related deaths in Georgia was based on 2016-2019 maternal mortality data obtained from the Georgia Department of Public Health., Methods: Our study analysis involved complete-case data of maternal deaths identified as pregnancy-related deaths ( n  = 129). Statistical analyses included two distinct population-level measures: (a) timing (i.e. during pregnancy, 0 to 60 days, 61 to 180 days, and 181 to 365 days postpartum) and (b) cause-specific deaths patterned by sociodemographic groups of women and by rural and urban county of residence. Categorical variables were compared using the Chi square or Fisher's exact test and presented as numbers and percentages. A post hoc power analysis was conducted to inform whether there was sufficient power to detect statistically significant effects given available sample sizes., Results: Among a total of 129 pregnancy-related deaths, 30 (23.3%) deaths occurred during pregnancy and 63 (48.8%) deaths occurred within the first 60 days postpartum. Pregnancy-related deaths were disproportionally common among non-Hispanic Black, 25 to 34 years old, and poorly educated women. Three leading underlying causes, cardiomyopathy (22.7%), hemorrhage (21.6%), and cardiovascular or coronary disease (20.4%), accounted for about 65% of all pregnancy-related deaths. Mental health conditions were common causes of death among non-Hispanic White women during pregnancy and in late postpartum., Conclusion: Continued monitoring, collecting and analyzing reliable data will help identify root causes and find ways to eliminate the disproportionate burden of pregnancy-related deaths in the State of Georgia.

Aim: To describe the time between external ventricular drain (EVD) implantation and mobilization in neurosurgery intensive care unit (ICU) patients with EVDs. Due to increased intracranial pressure, neurosurgery patients with external ventricular drain (EVD) who are admitted to the ICU frequently remain at rest, resulting in prolonged ICU and hospital length of stay (LOS), mechanical ventilator (MV) duration, and other adverse effects., Material and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on 131 neurosurgery patients admitted to the ICU with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) who underwent EVD. Time of mobilization, level of mobilization, ICU and hospital LOS, MV duration, and other factors were evaluated for patients who met the inclusion criteria., Results: Of the 131 patients, 67 survived, and 61 began to mobilize in varying degrees of dangling (26.22%), standing (44.26%), and walking (29.5%). The mean number of days between EVD implantation and mobilization was 10.15. According to the findings, the mean ICU-LOS in patients was 14.56 days, the MV duration was 7.13 days, the time of ICU discharge from EVD removal was 7.08 days, and the hospital-LOS was 16.98 days. In addition, seven patients (10.44%) developed DVT, and three developed PE (4.47%)., Conclusion: Prolonged immobility in patients with EVD is associated with negative outcomes such as PE and DVT, as well as an increase in MV duration, ICU-LOS, and hospital-LOS. Therefore, designing an appropriate and standard mobilization protocol and training nursing staff to assist patients in safely mobilizing can significantly reduce the complications above, reduce postoperative care, and empower patients.

Introduction: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are divided into BCR-ABL positive Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and BCR-ABL negative MPNs including Polycythemia vera (PV), Essential Thrombocythemia (ET) and Primary myelofibrosis (PMF). Evaluation of the Philadelphia chromosome in MPNs is a diagnostic requirement for classic CML., Case Report: In 2020, a 37-year-old woman with negative cytogenetic testing for Janus kinase2 (JAK2), Calreticulin (CALR), myeloproliferative leukemia virus oncogene (MPL), and positive for BCR-ABL1 mutation with reticular fibrosis in bone marrow was diagnosed as CML. Some years ago, the patient had been diagnosed with PMF with evidence of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD). The BCR-ABL fusion gene was initially evaluated which was negative. Then, Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) was confirmed by Dermatopathologist with palpable splenomegaly and high white blood cell (WBC) count with basophilia. Finally, BCR-ABL was detected positive by the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). In fact, the co-occurrence of PMF with CML was identified., Conclusion: This case study highlighted the importance of some cytogenetic methods in the detection and classification of MPNs. Background: In recent years, drug screening has been one of the most significant challenges in the field of personalized medicine, particularly in cancer treatment. However, several new platforms have been introduced to address this issue, providing reliable solutions for personalized drug validation and safety testing. In this study, we developed a personalized drug combination protocol as the primary input to such platforms., Methods: To achieve this, we utilized data from whole-genome expression profiles of 6173 breast cancer patients, 312 healthy individuals, and 691 drugs. Our approach involved developing an individual pattern of perturbed gene expression (IPPGE) for each patient, which was used as the basis for drug selection. An algorithm was designed to extract personalized drug combinations by comparing the IPPGE and drug signatures. Additionally, we employed the concept of drug repurposing, searching for new benefits of existing drugs that may regulate the desired genes., Results: Our study revealed that drug combinations obtained from both specialized and non-specialized cancer medicines were more effective than those extracted from only specialized medicines. Furthermore, we observed that the individual pattern of perturbed gene expression (IPPGE) was unique to each patient, akin to a fingerprint., Conclusions: The personalized drug combination protocol developed in this study offers a methodological interface between drug repurposing and combination drug therapy in cancer treatment. Background: The effect of vaccination on the SARS-CoV-2 baseline viral load and clearance during COVID-19 infection is debatable. This study aimed to assess the effects of demographic and vaccination characteristics on the viral load of SARS-CoV-2., Methods: We included the patients referred for outpatient SARS-CoV-2 qRT-PCR (reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction) test between July and September 2022. Cycle threshold (Ct) data were compared based on the demographic and vaccination characteristics. A generalized linear model was used to determine the factors associated with the SARS-CoV-2 PCR Ct value., Results: Of 657 participants, 390 (59.4%) were symptomatic and 308 (47.1%) were COVID-19 positive. Among 590 individuals with known vaccination status, 358 (60.6%) were booster vaccinated, 193 (32.6%) were fully vaccinated, 13 (2.2%) were partially vaccinated, and 26 (4.4%) were unvaccinated. Most vaccinated patients received inactivated vaccines (70.5%). The median Ct value was 20 [IQR: 18-23.75] with no significant difference between individuals with different vaccination statuses ( P value = 0.182). There were significant differences in Ct value in terms of both symptom presence and onset (both P values < 0.001). Our regression model showed that inactivated vaccines ( P value = 0.027), mRNA vaccines ( P value = 0.037), and the presence and onset of symptoms (both P values < 0.001) were independent factors significantly associated with the viral load., Conclusion: The SARS-CoV-2 baseline viral load is unaffected by vaccination status, yet vaccination might accelerate viral clearance. Background: This study aimed to present a strategic waste management in two private hospitals in Yazd using models of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) and quantitative strategic planning matrix (QSPM)., Methods: The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the organization was identified according to existing documents and expert team. The internal and external factors were identified by internal factor evaluation (IFE) and external factor evaluation (EFE) matrices. The strategies to improve waste management in two hospitals were presented by comparing internal and external factors. Finally, the attractiveness table was compiled and weighted using the QSPM method to prioritize the strategies., Results: The results demonstrated that 24 strengths, 30 weaknesses, 16 opportunities, and 22 threats were identified. The final score of internal and external factors for hospital A and B were (X: 2.37, Y:1.88) and (X: 2.37, Y: 2.01), respectively. Based on the results, 12 strategies were presented. Finally, the strategy of "the improvement of green management indicators" was implemented as a priority according to QSPM matrix., Conclusion: The result of this study duplicated that using the QSPM and SWOT models is assist to present viable strategies to improve the health-care waste management.

Background: The WASF3 gene has been linked to promoting metastasis in breast cancer (BC) cells, and low expression reduces invasion potential. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) function as microRNA (miRNA) modulators and are involved in cancer progression, but the relationship between these factors remains unclear., Methods: This study used bioinformatics methods and a computational approach to investigate the role of circRNAs and miRNAs in the context of WASF3 overexpression. Differentially expressed mRNAs, circRNAs, and miRNAs were identified using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets. A competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was constructed based on circRNA-miRNA pairs and miRNA-mRNA pairs. Functional and pathway enrichment analyses were predicted using a circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network., Results: RNA expression patterns were significantly different between normal and tumor samples. A total of 190 circRNAs, 76 miRNAs, and 678 mRNAs were differentially expressed. The analysis of the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network revealed interactions between hsa-circ-0100153, hsa-miR-31, hsa-miR-767-3p, and hsa-miR-935 with WASF3 in cancer. These interactions primarily function in DNA replication and the cell cycle., Conclusions: This study reveals a mechanism by which WASF3 overexpression affects the expression of circRNAs hsa-circ-0100153, promoting BC progression by sponging hsa-miR-31/hsa-miR-767-3p /hsa-miR-935. Dairy milk production is a quantitative trait that is controlled by many biological and environmental factors. This study employs a network-driven systems approach and clustering algorithm to uncover deeper insights into its genetic associations. We analyzed the GSE33680 dataset from the GEO database to understand the biological importance of milk production through gene expression and modules. In this study, we employed CytoNCA and ClusterONE plugins within Cytoscape for network analysis. Moreover, miRWalk software was utilized to detect miRNAs, and DAVID was employed to identify gene ontology and pathways. The results revealed 140 up-regulated genes and 312 down-regulated genes. In addition, we have identified 91 influential genes and 47 miRNAs that are closely associated with milk production. Through our examination of the network connecting these genes, we have found significant involvement in important biological processes such as calcium ion transit across cell membranes, the BMP signaling pathway, and the regulation of MAPK cascade. The conclusive network analysis further reveals that GAPDH , KDR , CSF1 , PYGM , RET , PPP2CA , GUSB , and PRKCA are closely linked to key pathways essential for governing milk production. Various mechanisms can control these genes, making them valuable for breeding programs aiming to enhance selection indexes.

Background: Advances in surgical and neonatal care have led to improved survival of patients with œsophageal atresia (OA) over time. Morbidity remains significant, with one-third of patients being affected by a postoperative complication. Several aspects of management are not consensual, such as the use of œsophagogram before starting oral feeding., Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study, including all children with OA that underwent a primary anastomosis in the first days of life, between 2012 and 2018 in five French centers, to determine the usefulness of postoperative œsophagogram during the 10 days after early primary repair of OA to diagnose the anastomotic leak and congenital œsophageal stenosis., Results: Among 225 included children, 90 (40%) had a routine œsophagogram and 25 (11%) had an anastomotic leak, clinically diagnosed before the scheduled œsophagogram in 24/25 (96%) children at median postoperative day 4. Ten patients had associated congenital œsophageal stenosis diagnosed on the œsophagogram in only 30% of cases., Conclusion: Early œsophagogram is rarely useful in the diagnosis of an anastomotic leak, which is clinically diagnosed before performing an œsophagogram in the majority of cases. The need for a postoperative œsophagogram should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis., Impact: Early œsophagogram is not helpful in the diagnosis of an anastomotic leak in the majority of cases. An anastomotic leak is most often diagnosed clinically before performing an œsophagogram. Early postoperative œsophagogram could be helpful for the diagnosis of congenital œsophageal stenosis. However, dysphagia occurs later and early diagnosis of congenital œsophageal stenosis has no impact on the management and outcome of asymptomatic children. The phytochemical study of the 70% ethanol extract of the aerial parts of Diplotaxis erucoides afforded one new flavonoid glycoside, namely kaempferol-3- O -[ α -L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)- β -D-xylopyranoside]-7- O - α -L-rhamnopyranoside ( 1 ), named diploerucoside A and seven known compounds including one flavonoid ( 2 ), one phenolic glycoside ( 3 ), one monoterpene ( 4 ), one triterpene ( 5 ), one sitosterol ( 6 ) and two monoglycerolipids ( 7 , 8 ). Their structures were established by extensive spectroscopic analysis including 1 D- and 2 D-NMR ( 1 H, 13 C, 1 H- 1 H COSY, HSQC and HMBC), mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) and by comparison with the data reported in the literature.

Diabetes is a major metabolic syndrome, which may be improved using nutritional pharmaceuticals. Some microalgae species, such as spirulina, stand out by providing biomass with exceptional nutritional properties. Spirulina has a wide range of pharmacological effects, mostly related to phycocyanin. Phycocyanin is a protein compound with antidiabetic properties, known as a nutraceutical., Objective: This review delves into phycocyanin applications in diabetes and its complications and ascertains the mechanisms involved., Methods: Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ProQuest databases were systematically reviewed (up to April 30, 2023), in which only animal and cellular studies were found., Results: According to animal studies, the administration of phycocyanin affected biochemical parameters (primary outcome) related to diabetes. These results showed an increase in fasting insulin serum and a decrease in fasting blood glucose, glycosylated serum protein, and glycosylated hemoglobin. In cellular studies, though, phycocyanin prevented methylglyoxal and human islet amyloid polypeptide-induced dysfunction in β-cells and induced apoptosis through different molecular pathways (secondary outcome), including activation of Nrf2, PI3K/Akt, and suppression of JNK and p38. Also, phycocyanin exerted its antidiabetic effect by affecting the pathways regulating hepatic glucose metabolism., Conclusions: Thus, based on the available information and literature, targeting these pathways by phycocyanin may unleash an array of benefits, including positive outcomes of the antidiabetic effects of phycocyanin as a nutraceutical., Other: This systematic review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) at the National Institute of Health. The Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are promising technologies that can help make the health system more efficient, which concurrently can be particularly useful to help maintain a high quality of life for older adults, especially in light of healthcare staff shortage. Many health issues are challenging to manage both by healthcare staff and policymakers. They have a negative impact on older adults and their families and are an economic burden to societies around the world. This situation is particularly critical for older adults, a population highly vulnerable to diseases that needs more consideration and care. It is, therefore, crucial to improve diagnostic and management as well as proposed prevention strategies to enhance the health and quality of life of older adults. In this study, we focus on detecting symptoms in early stages of diseases to prevent the deterioration of older adults' health and avoid complications. We focus on digestive and urinary system disorders [mainly the Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)] that are known to affect older adult populations and that are detrimental to their health and quality of life. Our proposed approach relies on unobtrusive IoT and change point detections algorithms to help follow older adults' health status daily. The approach monitors long-term behavior changes and detects possible changes in older adults' behavior suggesting early onsets or symptoms of IBS and UTI. We validated our approach with medical staff reports and IoT data collected in the residence of 16 different older adults during periods ranging from several months to a few years. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is an anionic surfactant, which has a wide range of usage in the health sector and in dental pharmaceutical products, especially in toothpastes. The objective of this review was to investigate the effects of SLS containing dentifrices on oral and periodontal health, possible side effects, and its benefits. A thorough literature search was done using databases of PubMed and Google Scholar and finally, 40 articles were included in the study. This narrative review revealed the sources of discrepancy and conflicting results regarding the impact of SLS on oral cavity as well as a lack of sufficient evidence in most topics. Hence, the evidence suggests improved drug bioavailability when used as a solubilizer, improved plaque control, and reduction in bad breath. Sustainable municipal solid waste leachate (MSWL) management requires a paradigm shift from removing contaminants to effectively recovering resources and decreasing contaminants simultaneously. In this study, two types of humic substances, fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) were extracted from MSWL. HA was extracted using HCl and NaOH solution, followed by FA using a column bed under diversified operations such as flow rate, input concentration, and bed height. Also, this work aims to evaluate efficiency of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Dynamic adsorption models in predicting FA. With the flow rate of 0.3 mL/min, bed height of 15.5 cm, and input concentration of 4.27 g/mL, the maximum capacity of FA was obtained at 23.03 mg/g. FTIR analysis in HA and FA revealed several oxygen-containing functional groups including carboxylic, phenolic, aliphatic, and ketone. The high correlation coefficient value (R 2 ) and a lower mean squared error value (MSE) were obtained using the ANN, indicating the superior ability of ANN to predict adsorption capacity compared to traditional modeling., (© 2023.
