Background: Tissue expansion to treat of alopecia of the scalp is the corner stone to restore a hairy scalp, although the process of expansion takes time to achieve a satisfactory result. Overexpansion could help in managing limited areas of donor sites or inadequate supply of tissue expanders. Meticulous patient selection and follow-up is the key to avoid complications and to obtain good results., Methods: Tissue expanders were used to restore the hairy scalp after burns or direct trauma. More than one tissue expander could be used simultaneously or after the first stage; the expander could be reused for the same patient for further expansion in another part of the hairy scalp to complete hair restoration and removal of all scar tissue., Results: Twenty-five patients with alopecia underwent hair restoration with 28 expanders, all of which were overexpanded. Three pairs of expanders were used simultaneously in three patients. Three expanders were reused in the other three patients after removal to complete the second stage. All patients showed complete restoration of their hairy scalp with minimal complications and a high rate of satisfaction., Conclusions: Tissue expansion is a cornerstone in the treatment of scalp alopecia. Meticulous patient selection and follow-up provided the most satisfactory results, with fewer postoperative complications. Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a developmental defect that affects the brain structure due to failure or incomplete division of the prosencephalon at the third week to the fourth week of gestation into cerebral hemispheres. Although the exact cause of HPE remains unclear, it is suspected to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. We report a case of alobar HPE. This case was diagnosed on antenatal ultrasonography in a 42-year-old female (Gravida 3, Para 2) with an unremarkable family history and absence of any risk factors. The association of alobar HPE with an atrioventricular canal defect, left-sided clubfoot, and omphalocele, in this case, constitutes a rare fetal morphological presentation. Doxorubicin (Dox) is widely used as a chemotherapy drug, while anethole (AN) is primarily known as the main aromatic component in various plant species. This research focused on the impact of AN on the cardiac and renal toxicity induced by Dox and to understand the underlying mechanisms. For cardiac toxicity, Wistar rats were categorized into four groups: a Control group; a Dox group, where rats received 2.5 mg/kg of Dox intraperitoneally every other day; and two Dox + AN groups, where animals were administered Dox (2.5 mg/kg/every other day, IP) along with 125 mg/kg or 250 mg/kg of AN, respectively. The renal toxicity study included similar groups, with the Dox group receiving a single dose of 20 mg/kg of Dox intraperitoneally on the tenth day, and the Dox + AN groups receiving 125 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg of AN for two weeks, alongside the same dose of Dox (20 mg/kg, IP, once on the 10th day). Parameters assessed included ECG, cardiac injury markers (CK, CK-MB, and LDH), and kidney function tests (Cr, BUN, uric acid, LDL, Kim-1, NGAL, and CysC). Antioxidant activity, lipid peroxidation, inflammation, and apoptotic markers were also monitored in heart and renal tissues. Gene expression levels of the TLR4/MyD88/NFκB pathway, along with Bax and Bcl-2, were evaluated. Dox significantly altered ECG, elevated cardiac injury markers, and renal function markers. It also augmented gene expressions of TLR4/MyD88/NFκB, amplified oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic markers. Conversely, AN reduced cardiac injury markers and kidney function tests, improved ECG, diminished TLR4/MyD88/NFκB gene expression, and alleviated oxidative stress by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities and reducing inflammatory cytokines. AN also enhanced Bcl-2 levels and inhibited Bax and the cleavage of caspase-3 and 9. The human microbiome is associated with human health and disease. Exogenous compounds, including pharmaceutical products, are also known to be affected by the microbiome, and this discovery has led to the field of pharmacomicobiomics. The microbiome can also alter drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, possibly resulting in side effects, toxicities, and unanticipated disease response. Microbiome-mediated effects are referred to as drug-microbiome interactions (DMI). Rapid advances in the field of pharmacomicrobiomics have been driven by the availability of efficient bacterial genome sequencing methods and new computational and bioinformatics tools. The success of fecal microbiota transplantation for recurrent Clostridioides difficile has fueled enthusiasm and research in the field. This review focuses on the pharmacomicrobiome in transplantation. Alterations in the microbiome in transplant recipients are well documented, largely because of prophylactic antibiotic use, and the potential for DMI is high. There is evidence that the gut microbiome may alter the pharmacokinetic disposition of tacrolimus and result in microbiome-specific tacrolimus metabolites. The gut microbiome also impacts the enterohepatic recirculation of mycophenolate, resulting in substantial changes in pharmacokinetic disposition and systemic exposure. The mechanisms of these DMI and the specific bacteria or communities of bacteria are under investigation. There are little or no human DMI data for cyclosporine A, corticosteroids, and sirolimus. The available evidence in transplantation is limited and driven by small studies of heterogeneous designs. Automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) are decentralized, computer-controlled systems used to store, distribute, and track medications at the point of care in the wards., Objective: The objective of the current study is to evaluate how healthcare practitioners are satisfied with ADCs and scrutinize some influencing factors that could affect this satisfaction., Material: A cross-sectional survey study was designed and distributed online to healthcare providers in Al-hasa hospitals., Results: A total of 166 participants. Regarding the frequency and pattern of ADC use, around 79.5% used ADC and 85.4% were informed about using ADC on a daily basis. As for the level of satisfaction with ADC, an exact 81.9% gave a high rate for overall satisfaction, 81.3% were highly satisfied with the system's accuracy, and 74.7% were highly satisfied with the time it takes to complete the task. Regarding usability of the system, 69.8% thought it was easy whereas 36.8% agreed that the time required for reloading medication is longer than before ADC. Furthermore, 79.5% agreed that ADC allowed them to accomplish their job safely, and 67.4% agreed that it improved their productivity. Regarding challenges, 74.7% agreed that all drawer types assure safe access and removal of medications, and 18.7% agreed that there is a significant potential for loss of data., Conclusion: This study investigated healthcare staff's perceptions and satisfaction with ADCs in Al-hasa hospitals. African American (AA) kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) have poor outcomes, which may in-part be due to tacrolimus (TAC) sub-optimal immunosuppression. We previously determined the common genetic regulators of TAC pharmacokinetics in AAs which were CYP3A5 *3, *6, and *7. To identify low-frequency variants that impact TAC pharmacokinetics, we used extreme phenotype sampling and compared individuals with extreme high (n = 58) and low (n = 60) TAC troughs (N = 515 AA KTRs). Targeted next generation sequencing was conducted in these two groups. Median TAC troughs in the high group were 7.7 ng/ml compared with 6.3 ng/ml in the low group, despite lower daily doses of 5 versus 12 mg, respectively. Of 34,542 identified variants across 99 genes, 1406 variants were suggestively associated with TAC troughs in univariate models (p-value < 0.05), however none were significant after multiple testing correction. We suggest future studies investigate additional sources of TAC pharmacokinetic variability such as drug-drug-gene interactions and pharmacomicrobiome., (© 2024. Smoking has emerged as a predominant risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) in India, contributing significantly to the country's rising cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rates. The adverse effects of tobacco on cardiovascular health are well-documented, exacerbating a public health challenge in a nation with a high prevalence of smoking. Therefore, it is of interest to analyse the impact of smoking on the incidence and progression of coronary artery disease among the Indian population, emphasizing the need for targeted public health interventions to mitigate this risk factor. We included 1000 adults were enrolled from January to July 2023. The group comprised 500 CAD patients (cases) and 500 individuals without CAD (controls). We gathered information on demographics, smoking habits & other CAD risk factors. To assess the relationships between smoking, CAD, and other variables, we utilized multivariate logistic regression. The analysis revealed that current smokers had a substantially increased likelihood of CAD, with an unadjusted odds ratio (OR) of 3.20 (95% CI: 2.45-4.18), compared to non-smokers. This association remained significant even after adjusting for confounders, with an adjusted OR of 2.80 (95% CI: 2.10-3.75). The study confirms smoking as a critical, Adaptable risk element for CAD, independently increasing the risk of the disease. Smoking significantly elevates the risk of developing coronary artery disease among Indians. Comprehensive anti-smoking campaigns and stringent tobacco control policies are imperative to reduce the burden of CAD. Background: Therapeutic drug monitoring for mycophenolic acid (MPA) is challenging due to difficulties in measuring the area under the curve (AUC). Limited sampling strategies (LSSs) have been developed for MPA therapeutic drug monitoring but come with risk of unacceptable performance. The authors hypothesized that the poor predictive performance of LSSs were due to the variability in MPA enterohepatic recirculation (EHR). This study is the first to evaluate LSSs models performance in the context of EHR., Methods: Adult kidney transplant recipients (n = 84) receiving oral mycophenolate mofetil underwent intensive MPA pharmacokinetic sampling. MPA AUC0-12hr and EHR were determined. Published MPA LSSs in kidney transplant recipients receiving tacrolimus were evaluated for their predictive performance in estimating AUC0-12hr in our full cohort and separately in individuals with high and low EHR., Results: None of the evaluated LSS models (n = 12) showed good precision or accuracy in predicting MPA AUC0-12hr in the full cohort. In the high EHR group, models with late timepoints had better accuracy but low precision, except for 1 model with late timepoints at 6 and 10 hours postdose, which had marginally acceptable precision. For all models, the good guess of predicted AUC0-12hr (±15% of observed AUC0-12hr) was highly variable (range, full cohort = 19%-61.9%; high EHR = 4.5%-65.9%; low EHR = 27.5%-62.5%)., Conclusions: The predictive performance of the LSS models varied according to EHR status. Timepoints ≥5 hours postdose in LSS models are essential to capture EHR. This manuscript presents a novel approach for developing an environmentally friendly and effective oil-water separation membrane. Achieving a superhydrophobic (SH) coating on textile fabric (TF) involved a two-step process. Initially, the surface roughness was enhanced by applying bio-zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles obtained from Thymbra spicata L. Subsequently, the roughened surface was modified with stearic acid, a material known for its low surface energy. The bio-ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a circular morphology with an average size of 21 nm. The coating demonstrated remarkable mechanical stability, maintaining SH properties even after an abrasion length of 300 mm. Chemical stability studies revealed that the prepared membrane retained SH properties within a pH range of 5-11, which ensures robust performance. Absorption capacity measurements showcased different capacities for n -hexane (Hex), corn oil (C.O), and silicone oil (S.O), with consistent performance over 10 absorption-desorption cycles. High oil-water separation efficiencies were achieved for hexane, C.O, and S.O, emphasizing the coating's versatility. Flux rate measurements demonstrated that oil passed through the membrane efficiently, with the highest flux observed for Hex. Background: This study compared perioperative outcomes and long-term survival of saphenous vein grafts (SVGs) versus left internal thoracic artery (LITA) to left anterior descending artery (LAD) in isolated coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG)., Methods: In this retrospective, single-centre study, we included patients with primary isolated CABG from January 2001 to July 2022. Baseline demographics were compared between SVG-LAD and LITA-LAD. Univariable and multivariable regressions were performed for predictors of in-hospital death. Propensity score matching was performed for LITA-LAD vs. SVG-LAD. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated for comparison of survival. Cox proportional hazards model was used for predictors of survival., Results: A total of 8237 patients (1602 SVG-LAD/6725 LITA-LAD) were included. Median age was 67.9 years (LITA-LAD; 67.1 years vs. SVG-LAD; 71.7 years, p < 0.01). A total of 1270 pairs of SVG-LAD were propensity-matched to LITA-LAD. In matched cohorts, in-hospital mortality (0.8% vs. 1.6%, LITA-LAD and SVG-LAD respectively; p = 0.07), deep sternal wound infection, new cerebrovascular events, renal replacement therapy and hospital stay >30 days were similar. SVG-LAD did not adversely affect in-hospital mortality (OR; 2.03, CI; 0.91, 4.54, p = 0.08). Median long-term survival was similar between the groups (13.7 years vs. 13.1 years for LITA-LAD and SVG-LAD respectively, log rank p < 0.31). SVG-LAD was not a predictor of adverse long-term survival. (HR; 1.06, 95% CI; 0.92, 1.22, p < 0.40). Long-term survival was better with LITA-LAD for LVEF <30% (log rank p < 0.03)., Conclusions: There was no difference in the propensity-matched cohorts for use of SVG vs. LITA to the LAD. Further contemporary long-term studies are needed for substantiation.

Background: Epilepsy is a severe neurological disorder associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Vanillin (Van) is a natural phenolic aldehyde with beneficial pharmacological properties. This study investigated the neuroprotective effects of Van in epilepsy and elucidated its mechanism of action., Methods: Swiss albino mice were divided into the following five groups: "normal group", 0.9 % saline; "pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) group", intraperitoneal administration of 35 mg/kg PTZ on alternate days up to 42 days; and "PTZ + Van 20", "PTZ + Van 40", and "PTZ + sodium valproate (Val)" groups received PTZ injections in conjunction withVan 20 mg, Van 40 mg/kg, and Val 300 mg/kg, respectively. Behavioural tests and hippocampal histopathological analysis were performed in all groups. The Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 and HMGB1/RAGE/TLR4/NFκB pathways, oxidative stress, neuro-inflammation, and apoptotic markers were analysed. Furthermore, brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and levels of dopamine (DA), gamma-aminobutyric acid GABA, and serotonin 5-HT were assessed., Results: Van prolonged seizure manifestations and improved electroencephalogram (EEG)criteriain conjunction with 100 mg/kg PTZ once daily. Van administration increased Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 levels, with subsequent attenuation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels with elevated glutathione (GSH) levels and intensified superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities. Van reduced the gene and protein expression of HMGB1/RAGE/TLR4/NFκB and decreased the levels of inflammatory and apoptotic markers. The effective separation of oil and water presents a significant global challenge due to the growing prevalence of industrial oily wastewater. In this investigation, a superhydrophobic (SP) coating based on bio-copper (Cu) was successfully created using the grape seed extract and applied onto a textile fabric (TF) to create a highly efficient membrane for oil-water (O-W) separation. The characteristics of the resulting bio-Cu nanoparticles, including surface area, morphology, and composition, were examined. The developed SP TF (STF) membrane, based on bio-Cu, underwent extensive analysis of its wettability, morphology, surface composition, oil absorption capacity, O-W separation performance, flux rate, mechanical stability, and chemical stability. The STF membrane exhibited excellent SP properties, with a high-water contact angle of 156° and a low water sliding angle of 2°, indicating its exceptional ability to repel water. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrated a remarkable oil absorption capacity, separation efficiency, and the flux rate toward three different oils (diesel, corn oil, and kerosene). It displayed good mechanical and chemical stability, with the ability to withstand abrasion and immersion in solutions of different pH values for varying exposure times. These findings highlight the potential of the bio-Cu-based STF membrane as an effective and durable solution for O-W separation applications.

Background: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) causes significant disturbance in an individual's well-being and activity. Whereby, interfering with the dynamic progress in life. Also, anxiety is a product of stress and a major predictor of academic performance. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), measure levels of anxiety and perceived stress, evaluate the academic profile, identify lifestyle characteristics, and explore the relationship between these factors., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 340 Sudanese medical students filled out online questionnaires, composed of the sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, academic profile, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 scale (GAD-2), and Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10). Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 20.0 for data analysis., Results: Of 340 medical students, 3.8% of them were diagnosed with GAD, while 29.1% scored ≥ 3 in GAD-2, indicating a possible diagnosis. The study found that 9.7% of the participants used addictive substances, with 42% of them having high GAD-2 scores. Moreover, high anxiety levels were associated with high-stress scores (p-value = 0.000). Also, high GAD-2 scores were significantly associated with students who spent less than 10,000 SDG (18 USD) weekly, spent more time on entertainment using smart devices (p-value = 0.004), and had an unhealthy diet (p-value = 0.004). Low anxiety levels were associated with better sleep quality (p-value = 0.00), satisfaction with religious practices (p-value = 0.00), and increased leisure/hobby time (p-value = 0.018). High-stress levels were observed in females (p-value = 0.035), those with lower academic performance satisfaction levels, and increased hours of smart device usage for entertainment (p-value = 0.001). Reduced stress levels were associated with being ≥ 23 years old, increased leisure/hobby time (p-value = 0.002), satisfaction with religious practices [F(3, 166.6) = 10.8, p-value = 0.00)], and having a healthy diet (p-value = 0.006)., Conclusion: The low prevalence of GAD corresponded with previous literature, but 29.1% of medical students had a high probability of having GAD. This study presents an eco-friendly approach for constructing superhydrophobic (S.H.) coatings on steel surfaces. The biо Сu nanoparticles are synthesized using a biоgenic process. Two types of coatings, Ni-Ѕ.Α and Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α, were developed and characterized. The EDX results confirm the successful fabrication of two distinct coatings on the steel substrate: one involving the modification of nickel with stearic acid, Ni-Ѕ.Α, and the other involving the modification of nickel with both bio-Cu and stearic acid, Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α. The SEM results revealed that the S.H. coats exhibit circular microstructures which contribute to the surface roughness. The contact angles of water droplets on the Ni-Ѕ.Α and Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α coatings were measured at 158° ± 0.9° and 162° ± 1.1°, respectively. Chemical stability tests demonstrated that the Ni-Ѕ.Α coating maintains its S.H. behaviour in a pH range of 3-11, whereas the Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α coating exhibits excellent chemical stability in a broader range of pH (1-13). The coating's mechanical stability was evaluated through abrasion tests. The Ni-Ѕ.Α coating retained its S.H. properties even after an abrasion length equal 1100 mm, while the Ni-biо Сu-Ѕ.Α coating maintained its S.H. behaviour till an abrasion length equal 1900 mm. The corrosion behavior and protective properties of the S.H. coatings were studied via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) techniques. Background: Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are immature myeloid cells with suppressive function that has been thoroughly documented in the setting of cancer. Our purpose was to evaluate levels of MDSC and their subsets in a cohort of Egyptian patients with breast cancer., Methods: Evaluation of peripheral blood total MDSC and its subset was done using multicolor flowcytometry in 30 malignant, 10 benign breast tumor patients and 10 healthy control females., Results: BC patients had higher total MDSC levels compared to controls (p= 0.01) particularly the Monocytic MDSC (M-MDSC) and abnormal MDSC subsets (p = 0.001 and p <0.001, respectively). A tumor size > 2 cm exhibited significantly higher granulocytic MDSCs (G-MDSCs) compared to tumor size < 2 cm (p= 0.02) whereas abnormal MDSCs were significantly higher in patients with a tumor size < 2 cm (p = 0.037)., Conclusion: MDSC and its subsets can be used as a prognostic marker of tumor size as well as a potential targets for treatment in breast cancer patients.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease that is often resistant to current treatment options, leading to a need for alternative therapies. Herbal products have shown promise in managing various conditions, including UC. However, the potential of Casuarina glauca branchlets ethanolic extract (CGBRE) in treating UC has not been explored. This study aimed to analyze the chemical composition of CGBRE and evaluate its efficacy in UC treatment through in silico and in vivo experiments. LC-ESI-MS/MS was used to identify 86 compounds in CGBRE, with 21 potential bioactive compounds determined through pharmacokinetic analysis. Network pharmacology analysis revealed 171 potential UC targets for the bioactive compounds, including EGFR, LRRK2, and HSP90 as top targets, which were found to bind to key CGBRE compounds through molecular docking. Molecular docking findings suggested that CGBRE may be effective in the prevention or treatment of ulcerative colitis mediated by these proteins, where key CGBRE compounds exhibited good binding affinities through formation of numerous interactions. In vivo studies in rats with acetic acid-induced UC demonstrated that oral administration of 300 mg/kg CGBRE for 6 days reduced UC symptoms and colonic expression of EGFR, LRRK2, and HSP90. Separation of oil and water has become a daunting task at a global scale due to the frequent presence of industrial oily wastewater. This study describes the synthesis of a Bio-Ag nanoparticle and its utilization in fabricating superhydrophobic (SH) films on textile fibers for separating oil-water mixture. The Bio-Ag nanoparticles were prepared from grape seed extract. The study examined various aspects of the synthesized SH textile fiber, including its morphology, wettability, surface composition, chemical stability, mechanical stability, oil absorption capacity, oil-water separation performance, and flux rate. The results indicate that the developed Bio-Ag-based SH textile filter has excellent SH properties, with a low water sliding angle of 1° and a high water contact angles of 159°. The SH textile filter exhibited good separation efficiency, oil absorption capacity, and flux rate toward silicone oil, toluene, and petroleum ether. The SH textile filter also demonstrated satisfactory chemical and mechanical stability. The developed Bio-Ag-based SH textile filter has the potential to be an efficient material for oil-water separation applications.

Objective: Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (H I/R) injury arises due to a temporary obstruction followed by the re-establishment of blood supply to the liver. Linalool (LIN), a main volatile constituent of essential oils in numerous aromatic plant species, exhibited various medicinal and pharmacological actions. This study investigated the protective effect of LIN on the status of H I/R, with the study of the possible mechanisms. In addition, linalool's antagonistic effects were tested against several metabolic targets using in silico molecular docking technique., Materials and Methods: Wistar rats were allocated into five groups. Sham and LIN + Sham groups in which animals were administered either vehicle (1% CMC) or LIN (200 mg/kg/day) orally for two weeks. H I/R group in which rats were administered 1% CMC for two weeks and then experienced hepatic ischemia for 60 min followed by 6 hours of reperfusion. LIN 100 + H I/R and LIN 200 + H I/R groups in which rats were pretreated with LIN (100, 200 mg/kg/day) respectively for two weeks, then subjected to H I/R., Results: H I/R-induced injury resulted in impaired liver function and activated Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 and HMGB1/TLR4/RAGE/NFкB pathways with subsequent oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. LIN pretreatment alleviated I/R-induced impairment in liver function, promoted Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1, and mitigated the HMGB1/TLR4/RAGE/NFкB pathway. LIN pre-administration deterred adhesion molecule, neutrophils infiltration, RAGE, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and apoptosis., Conclusions: LIN demonstrated hepato-protective effects against H I/R via instigation Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 and mitigating the HMGB1/TLR4/RAGE/NFкB pathways with subsequent deterring oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.

Purpose: To evaluate vitamin D levels among adult Sudanese RA patients and identify its correlation with RA disease activity., Patients and Methods: A bicentric cross-sectional analytical hospital-based study was performed in two Khartoum State Hospitals between October 2019 and January 2020, enrolling 90 Sudanese patients with RA. Serum vitamin D levels were measured with a standard reference level of 30ng/mL-100ng/mL. A detailed interview-based questionnaire was used to collect the patient's information, clinical data and lab results-disease activity was assessed via the DAS-28 score. The data was then analyzed using SPSS v-24., Results: Vitamin D levels were low in 79 candidates (87.8%), 53 of which (67.1%) showed moderate insufficiency (10-30ng/mL), and 26 candidates (32.9%) had severe deficiency (less than 10 ng/mL). Regarding the disease activity, 57 participants (63.3%) had moderate disease activity (DAS-28=3.2-5.1), and 22 participants (24.4%) had high disease activity (DAS-28 >5.1). A significant negative correlation was reported between high DAS-28 scores and low vitamin D levels with p-value = <0.001 (95% CI: -0.8591 to 0.0015) and r = -0.44., Conclusion: Most adult Sudanese rheumatoid arthritis patients showed low vitamin D levels (87.8%), which was also significantly correlated with increased disease activity (P-value <0.05). The efficient separation of oil and water is a significant challenge worldwide due to the increasing frequency of industrial oily wastewater. Previous work by our group utilizes biological metal-organic framework-based superhydrophobic (S.P) textile fabric for oil/water separation. However, this system is limited due to the low mechanical stability, so there is a need for producing a more robust S.P membrane for oil/water separation. In this study, we report on the synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQD) from banana leaves via a hydrothermal process and their application in producing a robust S.P coating on textile fabric for oil/water separation. The CQDs were characterized using various techniques including TEM, XRD, absorbance spectroscopy, and the BET method. The TEM images showed that the CQDs were circular in shape with a size of 4.4 nm, while the XRD micrograph indicated that the CQDs were crystalline in nature. The UV-vis graph showed a peak at a wavelength of 278 nm, suggesting strong absorption in the ultraviolet region. The BET-specific surface area of the prepared CQDs is 845 m 2 /g, with a pore volume of 0.33 cm 3 /g, and a mean pore diameter of 1.62 nm. We examined the surface wettability, morphology, composition, oil absorption capacity, oil/water separation performance, flux rate, chemical stability, and mechanical stability of the S.P membrane. Our findings indicate that the developed CQD-based S.P membrane possesses excellent S.P properties, displaying high water contact angles of 163° and low water sliding angles of 1°. The membrane demonstrated superior oil absorption capacity, separation efficiency, and flux rate towards three different oils-petroleum ether, n-hexane, and silicone oil. Petroleum ether has the highest separation efficiency (99.5%), and flux rate (13,500 L m -2 h -1 ), while silicone oil has the lowest. However, silicone oil has the highest absorption capacity (218.9 g/g) and petroleum ether has the lowest (194.8 g/g). For the absorption capacity and separation efficiency, a one-way ANOVA test was conducted. The statistical analyses revealed significant differences in absorption capacity and separation efficiency for the three oils, highlighting the efficacy of the superhydrophobic membrane for tailored oil/water separation. Additionally, the S.P membrane exhibited good mechanical (the membrane maintains its superhydrophobicity until an abrasion length of 850 cm) and chemical stability (the membrane maintains its superhydrophobicity in pH range 1-13), withstanding abrasion and immersion in solutions of varying pH values. The CQD-based S.P membrane shows great potential as a promising material for oil/water separation applications, with excellent performance and stability under various environmental conditions.

In this paper, we present a sustainable approach for the creation of superhydrophobic (SP) coating on a stainless-steel substrate based on a biological metal-organic framework (MOF). The MOF was synthesized using aspartic acid as a linker and copper ions as a core metal. Two SP coatings were well constructed on stainless steel utilizing electrodeposition of nickel (Ni) and nickel altered by MOF (Ni@Bio-MOF) coatings followed by soaking in a solution of stearic acid in ethanol. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that the stearic acid-grafted nickel coating (Ni@SA) and the stearic acid-grafted Ni@Bio-MOF composite (Ni@Bio-MOF@SA), were effectively deposited on the stainless steel. The wettability findings displayed that the water contact angle of Ni@SA and Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA are 160° ± 1.1°, and 168° ± 1.2°, respectively. The prepared SP coating was also found to be chemically and mechanically stable. The results show that the Ni@SA coating maintains SP characteristics in a pH range of 3-11 while the Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA coating retained SP characteristics in a pH range of 1-13. Additionally, the superhydrophobic Ni@SA coating demonstrated SP characteristics up to a length of abrasion equal to 1300 mm, while the Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA coating exhibited SP characteristics up to a length of abrasion equal to 2700 mm. Furthermore, the Ni@SA and Ni@Cu-As MOF@SA coatings exhibited significantly improved corrosion protection in a 0.5 M NaCl solution compared with bare stainless steel, with protection efficiencies of approximately 94% and 99%, respectively. The results of this study demonstrate that the proposed approach is a promising method for the fabrication of eco-friendly and corrosion-resistant SP coatings on stainless steel substrate.

Parabolic trough collectors (P.T.Cs) are efficient solar energy harvesting devices utilized in various industries, for instance, space heating, solar cooling, solar drying, pasteurization, sterilization, electricity generation, process heat, solar cooking, and many other applications. However, their usage is limited as the high capital and operating costs; according to the International Renewable Energy Agency's 2020 report, the global weighted average levelized cost of electricity (L.C.O.E) for P.T.Cs was 0.185 $/kWh in 2018. This work analyses the economic, technical, and environmental potential of sustainable energy to increase the use of P.T.Cs in different sectors. To study how self-weight, heat loss, and wind velocity affect P.T.C performance, prototype testing, and wind flow analysis were used. Although P.T.Cs outperform in capacity factor, gross-to-net conversion, and annual energy production, improving their overall efficiency is crucial in reducing total energy production costs. Wire coils, discs, and twisted tape-type inserts can enhance their performance by increasing turbulence and heat transfer area. Improving the system's overall efficiency by enhancing the functioning and operation of individual components will also help decrease total energy production costs. The aim is to minimize the L.C.O.E associated with a P.T.C in order to enhance its economic viability for an extended period. When the nanofluid-oriented P.T.C was included in the conventional P.T.C workings, there was a decrease in the L.C.O.E by 1%. Of all the technologies available, ocean, geothermal, and C.S.P parabolic trough plants generate lower amounts of waste and harmful gases, with average emissions of 2.39%, 2.23%, and 2.16%, respectively, throughout their lifespan. For solar-only and non-hybrid thermal energy storage plants, the range of greenhouse gas emissions is between 20 and 34 kgCO 2 equivalents per megawatt-hour. Coal, natural gas steam turbines, nuclear power plants, bioenergy, solar PV, geothermal, concentrated solar power, hydropower reservoir, hydropower river, ocean, and wind power plants all release greenhouse gases at rates of 1022, 587.5, 110.5, 633, 111, 48, 41, 82.5, 7.5, 12.5, and 41.5 gCO 2 -e/kWh, respectively. This information is useful to compare the environmental effect of various energy sources and help us to choose cleaner, more sustainable options for the production of electricity. In this study, we report an eco-friendly and facile process for the synthesis of biochar, BC, and a cobalt-biochar nanocomposite, Co-BC, using rice straw biomass. We constructed two superhydrophobic coatings on steel substrates using potentiostatic electrodeposition of nickel-modified biochar, Ni@BC, and nickel modified by cobalt-biochar nanocomposite, Ni@Co-BC, then, these coatings were soaked in an ethanolic stearic acid solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the stearic acid-grafted Ni@BC coating, Ni@BC@SA, and the stearic acid-grafted Ni@Co-BC composite, Ni@Co-BC@SA, were well grafted on the steel surface. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the superhydrophobic coatings have nanoscale features. Atomic force microscopy results showed that the Ni@Co-BC@SA coat had higher roughness than Ni@BC@SA, resulting in higher superhydrophobicity. The water contact angles for Ni@BC@SA and Ni@Co-BC@SA coatings were 161° and 165°, respectively, while the values of water sliding angles for both coatings were 3.0° and 1.0°, respectively. Quantitative estimation of the scale inhibition efficiency revealed that the Ni@Co-BC@SA coating exhibited greater efficiency compared to the Ni@BC@SA coating. Additionally, the Ni@Co-BC@SA coating demonstrated improved corrosion resistance, UV resistance, mechanical abrasion resistance, and chemical stability compared to the Ni@BC@SA coating. These results highlight the superior performance of the Ni@Co-BC@SA coating and its potential as a highly effective and durable superhydrophobic coating for steel substrates., (© 2023. Anethole (AN) is one of the major constituents of several plant oils, demonstrating plentiful pharmacological actions. Ischemic stroke is the main cause of morbidity and death worldwide, particularly since ischemic stroke therapeutic choices are inadequate and limited; thus, the development of new therapeutic options is indispensable. This study was planned to explore the preventive actions of AN in ameliorating cerebral ischemia/reperfusion-induced brain damage and BBB permeability leakage, as well as to explore anethole's potential mechanisms of action. The proposed mechanisms included modulating JNK and p38 as well as MMP-2 and MMP-9 pathways. Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly assigned into four groups: sham, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), AN125 + MCAO, and AN250 + MCAO. Animals in the third and fourth groups were pretreated with AN 125 or 250 mg/kg orally, respectively, for two weeks before performing middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)-induced cerebral ischemic/reperfusion surgery. Animals that experienced cerebral ischemia/reperfusion exhibited amplified infarct volume, Evans blue intensity, brain water content, Fluoro-Jade B-positive cells, severe neurological deficits, and numerous histopathological alterations. MCAO animals exhibited elevated MMP-9 and MMP-2 gene expressions, enzyme activities, augmented JNK, and p38 phosphorylation. On the other hand, pretreatment with AN diminished the infarct volume, Evans blue dye intensity, brain water content, and Fluoro-Jade B-positive cells, improved the neurological score and enhanced histopathological examination. AN effectively lowered MMP-9 and MMP-2 gene expression and enzyme activities and diminished phosphorylated JNK, p38. AN decreased MDA content, amplified GSH/GSSG ratio, SOD, and CAT, decreased the serum and brain tissue homogenate inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β), NF-κB, and deterred the apoptotic status. This study revealed the neuroprotective ability of AN against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion in rats. AN boosted blood-brain barrier integrity via modulating MMPs and diminished oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis through the JNK/p38 pathway.

Date palm fruit ( Phoenix dactylifera : Arecaceae) is rich in essential nutrients and possesses several pharmacological and medicinal activities. The current study aimed to optimize a water bath-assisted extraction method for two cultivars of date palm fruits, Anbara (An) and Reziz (Rz), and investigated the protective effect of the optimized date palm fruit extract against CCl 4 -induced liver toxicity in relation to oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and DNA integrity. The optimization process of two date palm fruit cultivars was applied, using response surface methodology through adjusting three "factors"; time, temperature, and rotation, to allow maximum contents of total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC), reducing power (FRAP) and scavenging activity (ABTS) of the extract "responses". Extraction factors' application significantly enhanced TPC, TFC, FRAP, and ABTS responses by 1.30, 1.23, 3.03, and 2.06-fold, respectively in An and 2.18, 1.71, 1.11, and 2.62-fold, respectively in Rz, in relation to the convectional water extraction. Furthermore, co-administered CCl 4 with An or Rz optimized extracts enhanced body weight gain, amended hepatic architecture, and diminished collagen fiber accumulation. Furthermore, An or Rz extracts reduced liver enzymes, hydroxyproline, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), MDA, inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α, NF-κB) levels, and DNA fragmentation, while increasing deteriorated adiponectin (ADP) and antioxidant enzyme (GSH, GPX, NO, and IFN-γ) levels, relative to CCl 4 -administered animals. The protective effects of An or Rz-optimized extracts were also evidenced by suppressing hepatic fibrosis and improving liver function and structure via modulating oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, in CCl 4 -induced hepatic damage. Hence, the optimized extraction process for the two date palm fruits resulted in extracts which are rich in phenolic and flavonoid contents and with an elevated antioxidant power. The presence of these rich extracts could help to explain their proven hepatoprotective activity against CCl 4 -induced liver toxicity.

Objective: High-fat diet is one of the most imperative risk factors for cardiovascular disorders. Thymoquinone (TQ) is one of the active pharmacological components of Nigella sativa (black cumin). Salvia officinalis L. (sage) has been demonstrated to have diverse pharmacological actions. The main objective of this study was to determine the effects of sage and TQ combination on hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, blood pressure, and lipid profile in rats fed with a high-fat diet (HFD)., Materials and Methods: Wistar male rats were divided into five groups; normal diet (ND) and HFD, in which rats were fed with a normal diet or HFD for 10 weeks, respectively. In HFD + sage group, animals were administered sage essential oil (0.052 ml/kg) orally along with HFD. In HFD + TQ group, rats were administered TQ (50 mg/kg) orally with HFD. In HF + sage + TQ group, animals received sage + TQ along with HFD. Blood glucose (BGL) and Fast serum insulin (FSI) levels, oral glucose tolerance test, blood pressure, liver function tests, plasma, and hepatic oxidative stress markers, antioxidant enzymes, and glutathione content, and lipid profile were measured., Results: Sage and TQ combination decreased the final body weight, weight gain, BGL, FSI, and Homeostasis Model Assessment-Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR). The combination also lowered systolic and diastolic arterial pressures and liver function enzymes. The combination deterred lipid peroxidation, advanced protein oxidation product, and nitric oxide amplification, as well as restoring the superoxide dismutase, catalase activities, and glutathione content in plasma and hepatic tissue. Sage and TQ combination reduced the plasma total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and amplified high-density lipoprotein (HDL)., Conclusions: The results of the current study verified that sage essential oil, together with TQ exhibited hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and antioxidant actions and thus could be a valuable addition to diabetes management.

This study aimed to explore the long-term effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on spatiotemporal gait parameters and functional balance in children with cerebral palsy. Thirty-nine children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy were randomly allocated to one of two groups: control or study. The children in both groups received traditional physical therapy three times per week for six months. In addition, the children in the study group received hyperbaric oxygen therapy five times/week for eight weeks. The GAITRite system and pediatric balance scale were used to assess spatiotemporal gait parameters and functional balance at baseline, post-intervention, and six months after the cessation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Post-intervention means of all measured parameters were significantly higher than pre-intervention means, but only for the study group ( p < 0.05). However, both groups' means at the six-month follow up were significantly greater than those at pre-intervention ( p < 0.05). At the post-intervention and follow-up evaluations, comparisons between groups revealed a statistically significant difference in all measured parameters for the study group against the control group ( p < 0.05). It can be concluded that adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy to physical therapy rehabilitation could be effective in improving spatiotemporal gait parameters and functional balance in children with cerebral palsy.

Desulfovibrio vulgaris biofilm was pre-grown on Ti coupons for 7 d and then the biofilm covered coupons were incubated again with fresh culture media with 10 % (reduced) and 100 % (normal) carbon source levels, respectively. After the pre-growth, sessile D. vulgaris cell count reached 10 7 cells/cm 2 . The sessile cell counts were 2 × 10 7 and 4.2 × 10 7 cells/cm 2 for 10 % and 100 % carbon sources, respectively after the subsequent 7 d starvation test. The maximum pit depth after the 7 d pre-growth was 4.7 µm. After the additional 7 d of the starvation test, the maximum pit depth increased to 5.1 µm for 100 % carbon source vs 6.2 µm for 10 % carbon source. Corrosion current density (i corr ) from potentiodynamic polarization data at the end of the 7 d starvation test for 10 % carbon source was more than 3 times of that for 100 % carbon source, despite a reduced sessile cell count with 10 % carbon source. The polarization resistance (R p ) started to decrease within minutes after 20 ppm (w/w) riboflavin (electron mediator) injection. Background: SARS-CoV-2 atypical symptoms in older persons include falls, confusion, dizziness, and unusual weariness. Falls and their consequences are among the most prevalent causes of disability among older adults, significantly lowering quality of life and resulting in the loss of independence as well as impaired psychosocial functioning. The study purpose was to examine the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 infectious disease on balance in community-dwelling older adults., Methods: Sixty-four older adults aged ≥ 60 years from both sexes, 31 treated for SARS-CoV-2 infection and 33 matched normal controls participated in the study. The Biodex Stability System (BSS) and Berg Balance Scale (BBS) were used for evaluation of balance and fall risk. The correlation between the Biodex overall stability index and the Berg Balance Scale score was investigated., Results: When compared to controls, the SARS-CoV-2 group had significantly higher values of the Biodex overall stability index (OSI) ( p = 0.011), anterior-posterior stability index (APSI) ( p = 0.013), mediolateral stability index (MLSI) ( p = 0.018), and fall risk index (FRI) ( p = 0.008), as well as statistically lower scores on the Berg balance scale ( p = 0.003). A moderate negative correlation was found between the two assessment tools in the SARS-CoV-2 group., Conclusion: Balance impairment and an increased risk of falling are among the outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 in community-dwelling older adults.

For the first time, a facile and environmentally friendly approach for producing high-quality graphene from the biomass of banana leaves is described in this paper. Two rough coats of Ni-graphene, Ni@G, and Ni-graphene doped with chromium, Ni@Cr-G, were created on steel substrates by electrostatic deposition. These coatings were then submerged in an ethanolic solution of myristic acid, MA, to produce a superhydrophobic, SHP, surface. The Raman spectra demonstrated that the generated graphene was of high quality. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy findings confirm the modification of the Ni@G coating by MA, Ni@G@MA, and the modification of the Ni@Cr-G composite with MA, Ni@Cr-G@MA. The results of the scanning electron microscope revealed that the created SHP coatings have nanoscale features. The wettability results showed that the water contact angle values for Ni@G@MA and Ni@Cr-G@MA coatings are 158° and 168°, while the water sliding angle values for both coatings are 4.0 o and 1.0°, respectively. The atomic force microscopy results show that both Ni@G and Ni@Cr-G coatings increase the roughness of the steel. The chemical and mechanical stability of the Ni@Cr-G@MA coating was higher than those of the Ni@G@MA coating. The coated steel by Ni@Cr-G@MA exhibits UV stability up to 110 h, while the SHP-coated steel by Ni@G@MA exhibits UV stability for 60 h. The potentiodynamic polarization results show that the value of the corrosion current density for bare steel is 13 times that of steel coated with Ni@G@MA, and 21 times that of coated steel with Ni@Cr-G@MA. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS, results show that the charge transfer resistance for steel coated with Ni@G@MA is 38 times that of bare steel, while steel coated with Ni@Cr-G@MA is 57 times that of bare steel. SARS-CoV-2 virus has rapidly spread worldwide since December 2019, causing COVID-19 disease. In-hospital mortality is a common indicator for evaluating treatment outcomes. Therefore, the developing and validating a simple score system from observational data could assist in modulating the management procedures. A retrospective cohort study included all data records of patients with positive PCR for SARS-CoV-2. The factors that associated with mortality were analyzed, then allocation of potential predictors of mortality was executed using different logistic regression modeling, subsequently scoring system was developed from the most weighted predictors. The mortality rate of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia was 28.5% and 28.74%, respectively. The most significant factors that affected in-hospital mortality were old age (> 60 years), delay in hospital admission (> 4 days), high neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio "NLR" (> 3); higher computed tomography severity score; and CT-SS (> 20), in addition to using remdesivir and tocilizumab in the treatment protocol (P < 0.001 for all). Phosphoric acid is the core material for the fertilizer industry; however, it is incredibly corrosive to manufacturing plants' structures, mainly steel. Corrosion is one of the most severe problems encountered during phosphate fertilizer manufacturing. Recently, plant extracts have been commonly used as corrosion inhibitors because they are cheap and environmentally friendly. Steel corrosion in a 20% aqueous phosphoric acid solution in the absence and presence of fenugreek seed (Fen) or cape gooseberry leaf (CgL) extracts was investigated using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique, potentiodynamic polarization measurement, scanning electron microscope, and quantum chemical calculations. Fourier Transform Infrared, FTIR, was used to identify the functional groups in Fen and CgL extracts. The inhibition efficiency for steel in 20% aqueous phosphoric acid was roughly equal to 80% for 0.4 g/L CgL and 1.2 g/L Fen extracts. A scanning electron microscope showed that the chemical constituents of extracts block the surface roughness of steel, decreasing the corrosion rate. The activation parameters indicated the effectiveness of the extracts at a higher temperature. Measurements of the potential of zero charges showed that the steel surface is positively charged in the phosphoric acid solution. Background: Curcumin is a natural product obtained from the rhizome of Curcuma longa . Rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis ) is a medicinal and aromatic plant that is widely spread in the Mediterranean region. Both Curcumin and rosemary essential oil are natural products of high medicinal and pharmacological significance. The hepatoprotective effect of both natural products is well-established; however, the mechanism of such action is not fully understood. Thus, this study is an attempt to explore the hepatoprotective mechanism of action of these remedies through their effect on MEK and ERK proteins. Furthermore, the effect of rosemary essential oil on the plasma concentration of curcumin has been scrutinized., Materials and Methods: The major constituents of REO were qualitatively and quantitatively determined by GC/MS and GC/FID, respectively. Curcumin and rosemary essential oil were given to mice in a pre-treatment model, followed by induction of liver injury through a high dose of paracetamol. Serum liver enzymes, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant activities, the inflammatory and apoptotic biomarkers, as well as the MEK and ERK portions, were verified. The plasma levels of curcumin were determined in the presence and absence of rosemary essential oil., Results: The major constituents of REO were 1,8-cineole (51.52%), camphor (10.52%), and α-pinene (8.41%). The results revealed a superior hepatoprotective activity of the combination when compared to each natural product alone, as demonstrated by the lowered liver enzymes, lipid peroxidation, mitigated inflammatory and apoptotic biomarkers, and enhanced antioxidant activities. Furthermore, the combination induced the overexpression of MEK and ERK proteins, providing evidence for the involvement of this cascade in the hepatoprotective activity of such natural products. The administration of rosemary essential oil with curcumin enhanced the curcuminoid plasma level., Conclusion: The co-administration of both curcumin and rosemary essential oil together enhanced both their hepatoprotective activity and the level of curcumin in plasma, indicating a synergistic activity between both natural products.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are natural secondary metabolites that are mainly produced in plants, bacteria, and fungi as a part of an organism's defense machinery. These compounds constitute the largest class of alkaloids and are produced in nearly 3% of flowering plants, most of which belong to the Asteraceae and Boraginaceae families. Chemically, pyrrolizidine alkaloids are esters of the amino alcohol necine (which consists of two fused five-membered rings including a nitrogen atom) and one or more units of necic acids. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are toxic to humans and mammals; thus, the ability to detect these alkaloids in food and nutrients is a matter of food security. The latest advances in the extraction and analysis of this class of alkaloids are summarized in this review, with special emphasis on chromatographic-based analysis and determinations in food.

Beta-Caryophyllene (BCP), a natural bicyclic sesquiterpenes, is an abundant biomolecule in red pepper and other plants. Recently, it was reported to reduce the growth and the proliferation as well as enhance the apoptosis in numerous cancer cells, including colorectal, ovarian, bladder cancer and lung cancer. On the other hand, the combination therapy of cisplatin (CDDP) with other phytochemical compounds has synergistically enhanced the killing effect of CDDP on several types of cancer. In the current model, we have tested the role of BCP in enhancing the anti-tumor activity of CDDP on lung cancer cell lines. The results showed that BCP is not toxic at moderate doses and it can prevent lung cancer progression in doses above 75 µM. However, when being combined with CDDP, BCP improved the former chemotherapeutic function through regulating cell cycle, apoptosis and EMT signaling molecules. Gene and protein expression analysis showed that the combined treatment of CDDP and BCP significantly upregulated the level of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, CDKN1A, and the inhibitor of the apoptosis, BCL-xl2. In addition, the combination treatment reduced the protein level of the apoptosis regulator, BCL-2. Moreover, BCP appears to prohibit the EMT process that is associated with CDDP chemotherapy since the combination treatment induced a significant increase in the level of the epithelial cell marker E-cad that was reduced in CDDP-treated cells. In agreement with that, the combined treatment managed to modulate the effect of CDDP on the mesenchymal transcription factor ZEB-2. Additionally, molecular docking has been conducted to check the virtual interaction of BCP with these and other signaling molecules, but only cyclin-dependent kinase CDK6 was found to virtually bind with BCP, and at four sites with higher and stable biding energy (-7.8). Together, these data indicate that BCP enhances CDDP chemotherapeutic function through regulating the cell cycle, the apoptosis and EMT signaling molecules.

Extreme ethanol ingestion is associated with developing gastric ulcers. Achillea millefolium (yarrow) is one of the most commonly used herbs with numerous proven pharmacological actions. The goal of the hereby investigation is to explore the gastroprotective action of yarrow essential oil against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers and to reveal the unexplored mechanisms. Rats were distributed into five groups ( n = 6 ); the control group administered 10% Tween 20, orally, for two weeks; the ethanol group administered absolute ethanol (5 mL/kg) to prompt gastric ulcer on the last day of the experiment. Yarrow essential oil 100 or 200 mg/kg + ethanol groups pretreated with yarrow oil (100 or 200 mg/kg, respectively), orally, for two weeks prior to gastric ulcer induction by absolute ethanol. Lanso + ethanol group administered 20 mg/kg lansoprazole, orally, for two weeks prior to gastric ulcer induction by ethanol. Results of the current study showed that ethanol caused several macroscopic and microscopic alterations, amplified lipid peroxidation, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and apoptotic markers, as well as diminished PGE 2 , NO, and antioxidant enzyme activities. On the other hand, animals pretreated with yarrow essential oil exhibited fewer macroscopic and microscopic modifications, reduced ulcer surface, and increased Alcian blue binding capacity, pH, and pepsin activity. In addition, yarrow essential oil groups exhibited reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines, apoptotic markers, and MDA, restored the PGE 2 and NO levels, and recovered the antioxidant enzyme activities. Ethanol escalated Nrf2 and HO-1 expressions, whereas pretreatment of yarrow essential oil caused further intensification in Nrf2 and HO-1. To conclude, the current study suggested yarrow essential oil as a gastroprotective agent against ethanol-induced gastric lesions. This gastroprotective effect could be related to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic actions of the essential oil through the instigation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Among the world's leading causes of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the arteries. Both vasodilation and vasoconstriction, low levels of nitric oxide and high levels of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory factors characterize dysfunctional blood vessels. Hypertension, and atherosclerosis, all start with this dysfunction. Geraniol, a compound of acyclic monoterpene alcohol, found in plants such as geranium, lemongrass and rose, is a primary constituent of essential oils. It shows a variety of pharmacological properties. This study aimed to investigate the impact of geraniol on Ox-LDL-induced stress and inflammation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. In this study, HUVECs were treated with Ox-LDL or geraniol at different dose concentrations. MTT assay, Western blot, ROS generation and DNA fragmentation were used to evaluate geraniol's effects on Ox-LDL-induced HUVECs inflammation. The results show that geraniol pre-incubation ameliorates Ox-LDL-mediated HUVECs cytotoxicity and DNA fragmentation. The geraniol inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by Ox-LDL, including TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β. In Ox-LDL-stimulated HUVECs, geraniol suppresses the nuclear translocation and activity of NF-ᴋB as well as phosphorylation of IkBα. Moreover, geraniol activated the PI3K/AKT/NRF2 pathway in HUVECs, resulting in an increase in the expression of HO-1. Taking our data together, we can conclude that, in HUVECs, geraniol inhibits Ox-LDL-induced inflammation and oxidative stress by targeting PI3/AKT/NRF2., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Apart from pinhole leaks, MIC (microbiologically influenced corrosion) can also cause catastrophic failures such as pipe ruptures and support beam collapses due to mechanical property degradation or stress corrosion cracking. In this work, X80 pipeline steel dogbone coupons and square coupons were immersed in 150 ml broths containing Desulfovibrio vulgaris , a common corrosive sulfate reducing bacterium (SRB), for up to 14 days. The headspace volumes in the anaerobic bottles were increased from 150 ml to 200 ml and 300 ml to increase MIC severity. After 14 days of SRB incubation in ATCC 1249 culture medium with X80 coupons at 37°C, the sessile cell counts were 6.5 × 10 7 cells cm -2 for 150 ml, 2.3 × 10 8 cells cm -2 for 200 ml and 1.4 × 10 9 cells cm -2 for 300 ml headspace volumes, respectively owing to reduced H 2 S cytotoxicity in the broth with a larger headspace because it allowed more biogenic H 2 S to escape from the broth. Weight losses were 1.7 mg cm -2 , 1.9 mg cm -2 and 2.3 mg cm -2 for 150 ml, 200 ml and 300 ml headspace volumes, respectively. The corresponding pit depths were 2.6 μm, 4.2 μm and 6.2 μm for 150 ml, 200 ml and 300 ml headspace volumes, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear polarization resistance (LPR) and potentiodynamic polarization results corroborated the increasing weight loss and pitting data trends as a result of increased headspace. Acetaminophen (APAP) is the most extensively used and safest analgesic and antipyretic drug worldwide; however, its toxicity is associated with life-threatening acute liver failure. Cardamom (CARD), a sweet, aromatic, commonly used spice, has several pharmacological actions. In the current study, we tried to explore the chemical composition and the hepato-protective effect of ethanolic aqueous extract of CARD to mitigate APAP-induced hepatic toxicity and elucidate its underlying mechanism of action., Material and Methods: Aqueous CARD extract was subjected to LC-TOF-MS analysis to separate and elucidate some of its components. In vivo animal experiments involved five groups of animals. In the normal and cardamom groups, mice were administered either saline or CARD (200 mg/kg), respectively, orally daily for 16 days. In the APAP group, the animals were administered saline orally daily for 15 days, and on the 16th day, animals were administered APAP (300 mg/kg) IP for the induction of acute hepatic failure. In the CARD 200 + APAP group, mice were administered CARD (200 mg/kg) for 15 days, followed by APAP on the 16th day., Results: The aqueous extract of CARD showed several compounds, belonging to polyphenol, flavonoids, cinnamic acid derivatives and essential oil components. In the in vivo investigations, APAP-induced impaired liver function, several histopathological alterations, oxidative stress and inflammatory and apoptotic status signified severe hepatic failure. Whereas, pretreatment with the CARD extract prior to APAP administration diminished serum levels of the hepatic function test and augmented Nrf2 nucleoprotein and HO-1 and NQO-1. CARD down-regulated MDA, inflammatory mediators (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α and NF-κB) and apoptotic markers (caspase 3 and 9 and Bax) and amplified the activities of SOD, catalase, GSH-Px and GSH-R in hepatic tissue samples., Conclusion: CARD extract mitigated the hepatic toxicity induced by APAP. The underlying mechanism of action of such hepato-protective action may be through upregulation of the Nrf2/HO-1/NQO-1 pathway with subsequent alleviation of the oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis induced by APAP. Many of the compounds identified in the CARD extract could be attributed to this pharmacological action of the extract.

Objective: Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (H I/R) injury is a frequent clinical event during which the leading contributing players are inflammation and oxidative stress responses. β-caryophyllene (BCP), a natural bicyclic sesquiterpene, is an essential oil component of different plant species and edibles. This study aims to identify whether BCP pretreatment could avert H I/R injury with inspections of the underlying mechanisms., Materials and Methods: Animals were devised into five groups; Sham and BCP + Sham; the animals were administered saline or BCP (200 mg/kg, orally) respectively; H I/R group, the animals were administered saline orally for 14 days before induction of H I/R; BCP100 and BCP200, the animals were administered BCP (100 and 200 mg/kg, respectively) for 14 days, followed by induction of H I/R., Results: H I/R showed markedly increased ALT, AST, MDA, and lowered antioxidant enzyme activities, while the Nrf2/HO1/NQO1 pathway components were significantly augmented. The TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 elements were deterred, and subsequently, escalations in the inflammatory mediators (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α), adhesion molecule ICAM-1, neutrophils infiltration (MPO), and apoptotic markers were observed. Pretreatment with BCP amplified the antioxidant enzyme activities and Keap1/Nrf2/HO1/NQO1 pathway components. BCP pretreatment lowered TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway elements, which mitigated inflammatory mediators, ICAM-1, MPO, and apoptotic markers., Conclusions: The protective effect of BCP against hepatic I/R induced injury might be accomplished via mitigation of oxidative stress by regulating the Keap1/Nrf2/HO1/NQO1 pathway and inhibition of the inflammatory process via manipulating the TLR4/ NF-κB/ NLRP3, reflected by inflammatory markers, neutrophils recruitment, and adhesion molecules reduction. BCP might be a potential therapeutic agent for alleviating hepatic I/R-induced injury.

In this work, Ni and Ni-graphene, Ni-G, films were electrodeposited on copper substrate by potentiostatic deposition. To achieve superhydrophobicity, myristic acid, MA, was used to modify the surface of the electrodeposited coatings. The manufactured Ni film modified with myristic acid, Ni-MA, and the Ni-G film modified with myristic acid, Ni-G-MA, show excellent superhydrophobic, SHP, properties with a water contact angle of 159° and 162°, respectively. The surface morphology of the prepared SHP films was investigated using a Scanning Electron Microscope, and the results revealed micro-nano structures in both Ni-MA and Ni-G-MA films. The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer data showed that the Ni-MA and Ni-G-MA films were successfully grafted on the copper metal. The Ni-G-MA film possessed higher chemical stability and mechanical abrasion resistance than Ni-MA. The Ni-MA and Ni-G-MA films exhibit long-term durability in the outdoor environment for more than four months. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrated that the SHP films on the copper substrate exhibit remarkable corrosion resistance in 0.5 M NaCl., (© 2022. Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (RIRI) is associated with a high incidence of mortality. Existing therapies are mainly supportive, with no available nephroprotective agent. The purpose of this study is to examine the potential protective effect of Agathis robusta Bark Extract (ARBE) in RIRI., Methods: The chemical composition of ARBE was examined by LC-ESI-MS/MS. Network pharmacology was utilized to identify the RIRI molecular targets that could be aimed at by the identified major components of ARBE. Experimentally validated protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and compound-target networks were constructed using the STRING database and Cytoscape software. Molecular docking studies were employed to assess the interaction of the most relevant ARBE compounds with the hub RIRI-related targets. Furthermore, ARBE was tested in a rat model of RIRI., Results: The phytochemical analysis identified 95 components in ARBE, 37 of which were majors. Network analysis identified 312 molecular targets of RIRI that were associated with ARBE major compounds. Of these 312, the top targets in the experimentally validated PPI network were HSP90, EGFR, and P53. The most relevant compounds based on their peak area and network degree value included narcissoside, isorhamnetin-3- O -glucoside, and syringetin-3- O -glucoside, among others. Docking studies of the most relevant compounds revealed significant interactions with the top RIRI-related targets. In the in vivo RIRI experiments, pretreatment of ARBE improved kidney function and structural changes. ARBE reduced the renal expression of p-NfkB and cleaved caspase-3 by downregulating HSP90 and P53 in rats exposed to RIRI., Conclusion: Taken together, this study revealed the chemical composition of ARBE, depicted the interrelationship of the bioactive ingredients of ARBE with the RIRI-related molecular targets, and validated a nephroprotective effect of ARBE in RIRI.

A synthetic dibenzothiophene (DBT) mineralization pathway has been engineered in recombinant cells of Pseudomonas azelaica Aramco J strain for its use in biodesulfurization of thiophenic compounds and crude oil. This functional pathway consists of a combination of a recombinant 4S pathway responsible for the conversion of DBT into 2-hydroxybiphenyl (2HBP) and a 2HBP mineralization pathway that is naturally present in the parental P. azelaica Aramco J strain. This novel approach allows overcoming one of the major bottlenecks of the biodesulfurization process, i.e., the feedback inhibitory effect of 2HBP on the 4S pathway enzymes. Resting cells-based biodesulfurization assays using DBT as a sulfur source showed that the 2HBP generated from the 4S pathway is subsequently metabolized by the cell, yielding an increase of 100% in DBT removal with respect to previously optimized Pseudomonas putida biodesulfurizing strains. Background: D-carvone is a monoterpene that exists in the essential oils of several plant species. Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (Hep I/R) takes place clinically during different scenarios of liver pathologies. The aim of the current investigation is to disclose the hepato-protective actions of carvone against Hep I/R-induced damage and to reveal the underlying mechanism., Material and Methods: Rats were assigned into five groups: sham and carvone plus sham groups, in which rats were administered either saline or carvone orally for three weeks prior to the induction of Hep I/R. In the Hep I/R group, rats were administered saline orally prior to the Hep I/R induction operation. The carvone 25 plus Hep I/R and Carvone 50 plus Hep I/R groups were administered carvone (25 and 50 mg/kg, respectively) for three weeks, followed by the induction of Hep I/R., Results: Liver ischemic animals demonstrated impaired liver function, several histopathological variations, and reduced levels of antioxidant enzyme activities. Furthermore, the Hep I/R groups showed the elevated gene expression of high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), toll-like receptors 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB), and LR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLP3), with subsequent escalated adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), neutrophil infiltration, and several inflammatory mediators, including interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), as well as apoptotic markers. Pretreatment with D-carvone alleviated ischemia/reperfusion-induced impaired liver function, diminished the histopathological deviations, and augmented the antioxidant enzymes. In addition, D-carvone mitigated the gene expression of HMGB1, TLR4, NFκB, and NLP3, with a subsequent reduction in ICAM-1, neutrophils infiltration, inflammatory mediators, and apoptotic markers., Conclusion: Rats pretreated with D-carvone exhibited hepato-protective actions against Hep I/R-induced damage via the downregulation of HMGB1, TLR4, NFκB, NLP3, associated inflammatory mediators, and apoptotic markers.

In response to the industry's difficulty in properly separating oily wastewater discharge, researchers are investigating enhanced oil/water separation materials. In this work, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly superhydrophobic textile fabric was fabricated for effective oil-water mixture and emulsion separation. A biological metal-organic framework consisting of copper as a core metal and aspartic acid as a linker (Cu-Asp MOF) was used to improve the surface roughness of the pristine textile fabric, and stearic acid was used to lower its surface energy. The thermal gravimetric analysis investigated the prepared Cu-Asp MOF's thermal stability. X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy studied the crystal orientation and chemical composition of the Cu-Asp MOF, Cu-Asp MOF@SA, pristine textile fabric, and superhydrophobic textile fabric, respectively. The surface morphology of the pristine and modified textile fabric was studied by scanning electron microscope. The wettability results showed that the prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric has a water contact angle of 158° ± 1.3 and water sliding angle of 2° ± 0.2°. The prepared superhydrophobic textile fabric showed excellent oil-water mixture and emulsion separation performance, oil absorption capacity, chemical stability, mechanical abrasion resistance, and a high flux rate. Background: Renal ischemia/reperfusion injury is a clinically recurrent event during kidney transplantation. Geraniol is a natural monoterpene essential oil component. This study aimed to inspect geraniol's reno-protective actions against renal I/R injury with further analysis of embedded mechanisms of action through scrutinizing the Nrf-2/HO-1/NQO-1 and TLR2,4/MYD88/NFκB signaling pathways., Methods: Wistar male rats were randomized into five groups: Sham, Sham + geraniol, Renal I/R, and two Renal I/R + geraniol groups representing two doses of geraniol (100 and 200 mg/kg) for 14 days before the renal I/R. Renal I/R was surgically induced by occluding both left and right renal pedicles for 45 min, followed by reperfusion for 24 h. A docking study was performed to anticipate the expected affinity of geraniol towards three protein targets: hTLR4/MD2, hTLR2, and hNrf2/Keap1., Results: Renal I/R rats experienced severely compromised renal functions, histological alteration, oxidative stress status, escalated Nrf-2/HO-1/NQO-1, and amplified TLR2,4/MYD88/NFκB. Geraniol administration ameliorated renal function, alleviated histological changes, and enhanced Nrf-2/HO-1/NQO-1 with a subsequent intensification of antioxidant enzyme activities. Geraniol declined TLR2,4/MYD88/NFκB with subsequent TNF-α, IFN-γ, MCP-1 drop, Bax, caspase-3, and caspase-9 reduction IL-10 and Bcl-2 augmentation. Geraniol exhibited good fitting in the binding sites of the three in silico examined targets., Conclusions: Geraniol might protect against renal I/R via the inhibition of the TLR2,4/MYD88/NFκB pathway, mediating anti-inflammation and activation of the Nrf2 pathway, intervening in antioxidative activities.
