Traditional electromagnetic interference-shielding materials are predominantly electrically conductive, posing short-circuit risks when applied in highly integrated electronics. To overcome this dilemma, we propose a microcapacitor-structure model comprising conductive fillers as polar plates and intermediate polymer as a dielectric layer to develop insulating electromagnetic interference-shielding polymer composites. The electron oscillation in plates and dipole polarization in dielectric layers contribute to the reflection and absorption of electromagnetic waves. Guided by this, the synergistic nonpercolation densification and dielectric enhancement enable our composite to combine high resistivity, shielding performance, and thermal conductivity. Its insulating feature allows for direct potting into the crevices among assembled components to address electromagnetic compatibility and heat-accumulation issues.

Ultralight graphene aerogels with high electrical conductivity and superelasticity are demanded yet difficult to produce. A versatile emulsion-based approach is demonstrate to optimize multiscale structure of lightweight, elastic, and conductive graphene aerogels. By constructing Pickering emulsion using graphene oxide (GO), poly (amic acid) (PAA), and octadeyl amine (ODA), micron-level close-pore structure is realized while thermal shrinkage mismatch between GO and PAA creates numerous nanowrinkles during thermal annealing. GO nanosheets are bridged by PAA-derived carbon, enhancing the structural integrity at molecular level. These multiscale structural features facilitate rapid electron transport and efficient load transfer, conferring graphene aerogels with intriguing mechanical and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties. The emulsion-based graphene aerogel with an ultralow density of ≈3.0 mg cm -3 integrates outstanding electrical conductivity, air-caliber thermal insulation, high EMI shielding effectiveness of 75.0 dB, and 90% strain compressibility with superb fatigue resistance. Intriguingly, thanks to the gel-like rheological behavior of the emulsion, ultralight graphene scaffolds with programmable geometries are obtained by 3D printing. High ammonia pollution is a common problem in water bodies. However, research on the mechanisms underlying the toxic effects on organisms at different nutritional levels is still insufficient. Herein, based on the environmental concentration, the toxic effects of high ammonia pollution on Daphnia magna were investigated. Overall, the feeding and filtration rates of D. magna were significantly decreased by ammonia. Growth inhibition of D. magna by ammonia was confirmed by the decreased body length. After ammonia exposure, the metabolic status of D. magna changed, the correlation network weakened, and the correlations between metabolites were disrupted. Changes occurred in metabolites primarily involved in oxidative stress, fatty acid oxidation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and protein digestion, absorption, and synthesis, which were validated through alterations in multiple biomarkers. In addition, mitochondrial function was evaluated and was found to inhibit mitochondrial activity, which was accompanied by a decreased marker of mitochondrial activity contents and ATPase activity. Thus, the results suggested that energy metabolism and oxidative stress were involved in ammonia-induced growth toxicity. The landscape pattern determines water pollution source and sink processes and plays an important role in regulating river water quality. Due to scale effects, studies on the relationship between landscape pattern and river water quality showed variance at different scales. However, there is still a lack of integrated study on the scale effect of landscape pattern and river water quality dynamics. This study collected 4 041 data from results of previous publications to address the characteristics of landscape pattern and river water quality dynamics at different scales and to identify the key temporal and spatial scales as well as landscape pattern indices for regulating river water quality. The results indicated that, compared to precipitation events, base flow periods, and interannual scales, the high-flow period was the key temporal scale for linking landscape pattern on river water quality. Compared to the watershed scale, the landscape pattern of buffer zones had a greater impact on river water quality. The high-flow period-buffer zone scale was the key spatiotemporal coupling scale for linking landscape pattern and river water quality. Compared to croplands, water bodies, grasslands, and the overall landscape of the watershed, the landscape pattern of forests and urban areas had a greater impact on river water quality. Fragmentation degree was the most important landscape pattern factor regulating river water quality. In river water quality management, it is important to focus on the landscape configuration of buffer zones, increase forest area, reduce patch density of forests and water bodies, and decrease the aggregation degree of urban areas.

Flexible and adaptable polymer composites with high-performance reliability over wide temperature range are imperative for various applications. However, the distinct filler-matrix thermomechanical behaviors often cause severe structure damage and performance degradation upon large thermal shock. To address this issue, a general strategy is proposed to construct leakage-free, self-adaptive, stable percolation networks in polymer composites over wide temperature (77-473 K) with biphasic Ga 35 In 65 alloy. The in situ micro-CT technology, for the first time, reveals the conformable phase transitions of Ga 35 In 65 alloys in the polymer matrix that help repair the disruptive conductive networks over large temperature variations. The cryo-expanded Ga compensates the disruptive carbon networks at low temperatures, and flowable Ga and melted In at high temperatures conformably fill and repair the deboned interfaces and yielded crevices. As a proof-of-concept, this temperature-resistant composite demonstrates superb electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding properties and stability even after a large temperature shock (ΔT = 396 K). Furthermore, the superiority of the construction of temperature self-adaptive networks within the composite enables them for additive manufacturing of application-oriented components. Smart electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are of great significance in coping with the dynamic performance demands of cutting-edge electronic devices. However, smart EMI shielding materials are still in their infancy and face a variety of challenges (e.g., large thickness, limited tunable range, poor reversibility, and unclear mechanisms). Here, we report a method for controllable shielding electromagnetic (EM) waves through subwavelength structure changes regulated by the customized structure via a direct printing route. The highly conductive MXene ink is regulated with metal ions (Al 3+ ions), giving superb metallic conductivity (∼5000 S cm -1 ) for the printed lines without an annealing treatment. The reversible tunability of EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) ranging from 8.2 dB ("off" state) to 34 dB ("on" state) is realized through the controllable modulation of subwavelength structure driven by stress. This work provides a feasible strategy to develop intelligent shielding materials and EM devices.

Accurate source identification/apportionment is essential for optimizing water NO 3 - -N pollution control strategies. This study conducted a meta-analysis based on data from 167 rivers across China from 2000 to 2022 to analyze the spatial and temporal variation patterns of nitrate pollution in seven major river systems and to quantitatively identify the source composition of riverine nitrate. The average ρ （NO 3 - -N） in the seven major river systems was （4.54±3.99） mg·L -1 ， with 9.6% of river ρ （NO 3 - -N） exceeding 10 mg·L -1 . The riverine ρ （NO 3 - -N） in eastern China were higher than that in western China， and the highest concentration was observed in the Haihe River system. Additionally， tributaries experienced more serious NO 3 - -N pollution than that in the main stream. The ρ （NO 3 - -N） in most river systems in the dry season was higher than that in the wet season， except in the Yellow River system. There was significant nitrification in the Pearl River system， the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River system， the middle reaches of the Liaohe River system， the Songhua River system， and the Haihe River system， whereas there was significant denitrification in the Yangtze River system， the Huaihe River system， and the lower reaches of the Pearl River system. Based on the dual stable isotopes-based MixSIAR model， the major NO 3 - -N source was sewage/manure （ > 50%） in the Yangtze River system， Haihe River system， Liaohe River system， and Southeast River system. Soil nitrogen was the main NO 3 - -N source in the Songhua River system （56.4%）， and the contribution of fertilizer nitrogen， soil nitrogen， and sewage/manure to NO 3 - -N pollution in the Pearl River system， Huai River system， and Yellow River system was 20%-40%. The contribution rate of sewage/manure to NO 3 - -N in the tributaries was higher than that in the main stream， whereas the contribution rate of soil nitrogen to NO 3 - -N in the main stream was higher than that in the tributaries. The contribution rate of soil nitrogen， fertilizer nitrogen， and atmospheric deposition nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen in the wet season was higher than that in the dry season， whereas the contribution rate of sewage/manure to NO 3 - -N pollution in the dry season was higher than that in the wet season. Therefore， point source pollution such as domestic and production sewage discharge should be controlled in the Haihe River system， the Yangtze River system， the Liaohe River system， the tributaries and the downstream main stream areas of Yellow River system， and the downstream area of the Pearl River system， whereas non-point source pollution caused by the loss of fertilizer and soil nitrogen should be controlled in the Huaihe River system， the Songhua River system， the middle reaches of the main stream area of the Yellow River system， and the middle and upper reaches of the Pearl River system. The results can provide a scientific basis for the effective control of nitrate pollution in the river systems in China.

We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) rechallenge in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study included 111 patients who had previously received ICI therapy and experienced disease progression. The primary endpoints assessed were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and objective response rate (ORR). Our findings revealed that the ICI rechallenge showed promising results in improving patient outcomes. OS (r) is the time from rechallenging with immune checkpoint inhibitors to the last follow-up or death from any cause. The median OS (r) was 14.3 months (95% CI 11.3-17.3 months), with a median PFS (r) of 5.9 months (95% CI 4.1-7.7 months). The ORR was 17.1%; the DCR was 82.3%. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that patients without brain or liver metastases had a longer OS (r) compared to those with metastases (21.6 vs. 13.8 months, χ 2  = 3.873, P = 0.046; 20.8 vs. 9.1 months, χ 2  = 10.733, P = 0.001, respectively). Moreover, patients without driver gene mutations exhibited significantly longer OS than those with mutations or wild-type patients (22.9 vs. 16.1 vs. 7.5 months, χ 2  = 10.710, P = 0.005). Notably, patients who switched to a different ICI during the rechallenge had shorter OS than those who did not change medications (10.4 vs. 21.1 months, χ 2  = 9.014, P = 0.003). The incidence of immune-related adverse events did not significantly differ between the two treatment phases. These findings suggest that ICI rechallenge may be a viable therapeutic strategy for select NSCLC patients. The level of carbon black (CB) pollution in the environment is rapidly increasing, owing to the increase in natural and industrial emissions. The water environment has become an important sink for CB. However, studies on CB mainly focused on its impact on air pollution and phytoremediation applications, and the toxicity mechanism of CB in aquatic organisms is relatively limited. Thus, Daphnia magna was used as a model organism to explore the developmental toxicity of environmentally relevant concentrations of CB under a full life-cycle exposure. The toxicity mechanism of CB in aquatic organisms was investigated based on metabolomic and symbiotic microbial analyses. It was found that compared with the control group, the body length of exposed D. magna decreased, while the mortality and intestinal inflammation increased with increasing concentration of CB. The normal reproductive regularity of D. magna was disturbed, and the deformity and body length of the offspring increased and decreased, respectively, after CB exposure. Metabolomic analysis showed that the urea cycle metabolic pathway of exposed D. magna was increased significantly, suggesting a perturbation of N metabolism. In addition, two eicosanoids were increased, suggesting possible inflammation in D. magna. The levels of seven phospholipid metabolites decreased that might be responsible for offspring malformations. Microbiological analysis showed that the composition of the symbiotic microbial community of D. magna was disturbed, including microorganisms involved in carbon cycling, nitrogen cycling, and biodegradation of pollutants, as well as pathogenic microorganisms. Overall, this study found that the inflammatory related metabolites and symbiotic bacterial, as well as reproductive related metabolites, were disrupted after D. magna exposed to different concentrations of CB, which revealed a possible developmental toxicity mechanism of CB in D. magna. Although significant advances have been achieved in developing solar-driven water evaporators for seawater desalination, there is still room for simultaneously enhancing water evaporation efficiency, salt resistance, and utilization of solar energy. Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate a highly efficient three-dimensional (3D) mirror-assisted and concave pyramid-shaped solar-thermal water evaporation system for high-yield and long-term desalination of seawater and brine water, which consists of a 3D concave pyramid-shaped solar-thermal architecture on the basis of polypyrrole-coated nonwoven fabrics (PCNFs), a 3D mirror array, a self-floating polystyrene foam layer, and a tail-like PCNF for upward transport of water. The 3D concave pyramid-shaped solar-thermal architecture enables multiple solar light reflections to absorb more solar energy, while the 3D mirror-assisted solar light enhancement design can activate the solar-thermal energy conversion of the back side of the concave pyramid-shaped PCNF architecture to improve the solar-thermal energy conversion efficiency. Crucially, selective accumulation of the precipitated salts on the back side of the concave pyramid-shaped architecture is realized, ensuring a favorable salt-resistant feature. The 3D mirror-assisted and concave pyramid-shaped solar-driven water evaporation system achieves a record high water evaporation rate of 4.75 kg m -2 h -1 under 1-sun irradiation only and exhibits long-term desalination stability even when evaporating high-salinity brine waters, demonstrating its great applicability and reliability for high-yield solar-driven desalination of seawater and high-salinity brine water.

Disturbance of the cholinergic system plays a crucial role in the pathological progression of neurological diseases that cause dyskinesia-like behaviors. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this disturbance remain elusive. Here, we showed that cyclin-dependent kinase 5 ( Cdk5 ) was reduced in cholinergic neurons of midbrain according to the single-nucleus RNA sequencing analysis. Serum levels of CDK5 also decreased in patients with Parkinson's disease accompanied by motor symptoms. Moreover, Cdk5 deficiency in cholinergic neurons triggered paw tremors, abnormal motor coordination, and motor balance deficits in mice. These symptoms occurred along with cholinergic neuron hyperexcitability and increases in the current density of large-conductance Ca 2+ -activated K + channels (BK channels). Pharmacological inhibition of BK channels restrained the excessive intrinsic excitability of striatal cholinergic neurons in Cdk5 -deficient mice. Furthermore, CDK5 interacted with BK channels and negatively regulated BK channel activity via phosphorylation of threonine-908. Restoration of CDK5 expression in striatal cholinergic neurons reduced dyskinesia-like behaviors in ChAT-Cre ; Cdk5 f/f mice. Together, these findings indicate that CDK5-induced phosphorylation of BK channels involves in cholinergic-neuron-mediated motor function, providing a potential new therapeutic target for treating dyskinesia-like behaviors arising from neurological diseases., (Copyright © 2023 Chu Tong et al.)

Solution processing of two-dimensional nanomaterial inks guarantees efficient, straightforward fabrication of functional films, coatings, flexible devices, etc. Despite the excellent solution processibility and viscoelasticity of MXene aqueous inks, formulation of nonaqueous MXene inks with great affinity to both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates has proven quite challenging, limiting the practical applications of MXenes in printing/coatings on various substrates. Here, MXene surface chemistry is manipulated by asymmetrically grafting polystyrene and further concentrating the flakes into additive-free Janus MXene organic inks. The modified MXene nanosheets exhibit hydrophilicity on one side and hydrophobicity on the other. As a result, Janus MXene nanosheets ensure broad dispersibility in polar and nonpolar solvents, which in turn greatly extends the ink shelf life by slowing down the oxidation kinetics. Janus MXene sheets dispersed in toluene at room temperature remain at 90% of the initial solids after 1 month of storage. Janus surface engineering on MXene flakes guarantees the straightforward formation of uniform yet firm, large-area coatings on hydrophilic or hydrophobic substrates. These coatings demonstrate improved photothermal properties and chemical stability as well as good electromagnetic interference shielding performance. This strategy provides a simple and cost-effective way to promote the performance of MXene electronics in a variety of applications.

Electronic devices generate heat during operation and require efficient thermal management to extend the lifetime and prevent performance degradation. Featured by its exceptional thermal conductivity, graphene is an ideal functional filler for fabricating thermally conductive polymer composites to provide efficient thermal management. Extensive studies have been focusing on constructing graphene networks in polymer composites to achieve high thermal conductivities. Compared with conventional composite fabrications by directly mixing graphene with polymers, preconstruction of three-dimensional graphene networks followed by backfilling polymers represents a promising way to produce composites with higher performances, enabling high manufacturing flexibility and controllability. In this review, we first summarize the factors that affect thermal conductivity of graphene composites and strategies for fabricating highly thermally conductive graphene/polymer composites. Subsequently, we give the reasoning behind using preconstructed three-dimensional graphene networks for fabricating thermally conductive polymer composites and highlight their potential applications. Although electrically conductive and hydrophilic MXene sheets are promising for multifunctional fibers and electronic textiles, it is still a challenge to simultaneously enhance both conductivity and mechanical properties of MXene fibers because of the high rigidity of MXene sheets and insufficient inter-sheet interactions. Herein, we demonstrate a core-shell wet-spinning methodology for fabricating highly conductive, super-tough, ultra-strong, and environmentally stable Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-based core-shell fibers with conductive MXene cores and tough aramid nanofiber (ANF) shells. The highly orientated and low-defect structure endows the ANF@MXene core-shell fiber with super-toughness of ~ 48.1 MJ m -3 , high strength of ~ 502.9 MPa, and high conductivity of ~ 3.0 × 10 5 S m -1 . The super-tough and conductive ANF@MXene fibers can be woven into textiles, exhibiting an excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiency of 83.4 dB at a small thickness of 213 μm. Importantly, the protection of the ANF shells provides the fibers with satisfactory cyclic stability under dynamic stretching and bending, and excellent resistance to acid, alkali, seawater, cryogenic and high temperatures, and fire. The oxidation resistance of the fibers is demonstrated by their well-maintained EMI shielding performances. Background: Gastric cancer is one of the most lethal cancers. Aberrant expression levels of genes are frequently associated with cell immortalization and the occurrence of tumors. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of tankyrase 1 ( TANK1 ) in gastric adenocarcinoma and clarify the underlying mechanism., Methods: The messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of TANK1 , human telomerase reverse transcriptase ( h-TERT ), and telomeric repeat binding factor 1 ( TRF1 ) in clinical specimens and SGC-7901 cells were measured via real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays were utilized to observe the cell apoptosis as well as Ki67 and h-TERT expression in tumor-bearing models. The effects of TANK1 antisense oligonucleotides (TANK1 ASODN) on viability and apoptosis of SGC 7901 cells were evaluated by cell counting kit-8 and flow cytometry analysis., Results: We found that TANK1 and h-TERT were both increased in gastric adenocarcinoma, while TRF1 was decreased. Tumor-bearing models demonstrated that TANK1 ASODN appeared to be effective in inhibiting tumor growth and decreasing the expression of h-TERT . Additionally, TANK1 ASODN inhibited the viability and promoted apoptosis of SGC-7901 cells. Due to increasing active nitrogen pollution loads, river systems have become an important source of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) in many areas. Due to the lack of monitoring data in many studies as well as the difficulty in estimating intermediate parameters and expressing temporal-spatial variability in current methods, a high level of uncertainty remains in the estimates of riverine N 2 O emission quantity. Based on the monthly monitoring efforts conducted for 10 sampling sites across the Yonganxi River system in Zhejiang Province from June 2016 to July 2019, the temporal and spatial dynamics of riverine N 2 O dissolved concentrations ρ (N 2 O), N 2 O fluxes, and their influencing factors were addressed. A multiple regression model was then developed for predicating riverine N 2 O emission flux to estimate annual N 2 O emission quantity for the entire river system. The results indicated that observed riverine ρ (N 2 O) (0.03-2.14 μg·L -1 ) and the N 2 O fluxes[1.32-82.79 μg·(m 2 ·h) -1 ] varied by 1-2 orders of magnitude of temporal-spatial variability. The temporal and spatial variability of ρ (N 2 O) were mainly influenced by the concentrations of nitrate, ammonia, and dissolved organic carbon, whereas the N 2 O emission fluxes were mainly affected by river water discharges and ρ (N 2 O). A multiple regression model that incorporates variables of river water discharge and ρ (N 2 O) could explain 90% of the variability in riverine N 2 O emission fluxes and has high accuracy. The model estimated N 2 O emission quantity from the entire Yonganxi River system of 3.67 t·a -1 , with 29% from the main stream and 71% from the tributaries. The IPCC default emission factor method might greatly overestimate and underestimate N 2 O emission quantities for rivers impacted by low and high pressures of human activities, respectively. This study advances our quantitative understanding of N 2 O emission for the entire river system and provides a reference method for estimating riverine N 2 O emission with more accuracy.

Engineered microorganisms have proven to be a highly effective and robust tool to specifically detect heavy metals in the environment. In this study, a highly specific pigment-based whole-cell biosensor has been investigated for the detection of bioavailable Hg(II) based on an artificial heavy metal resistance operon. The basic working principle of biosensors is based on the violacein biosynthesis under the control of mercury resistance (mer) promoter and mercury resistance regulator (MerR). Engineered biosensor cells have been demonstrated to selectively respond to Hg(II), and the specific response was not influenced by interfering metal ions. The response of violacein could be recognized by the naked eye, and the time required for the maximum response of violacein (5 h) was less than that of enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP) (8 h) in the single-signal output constructs. The response of violacein was almost unaffected by the eGFP in a double-promoter controlled dual-signals output construct. However, the response strength of eGFP was significantly decreased in this genetic construct. Exponentially growing violacein-based biosensor detected concentrations as low as 0.39 μM Hg(II) in a colorimetric method, and the linear relationship was observed in the concentration range of 0.78-12.5 μM. Non-growing biosensor cells responded to concentrations as low as 0.006 μM Hg(II) in a colorimetric method and in a Hg(II) containing plate sensitive assay, and the linear relationship was demonstrated in a very narrow concentration range. The developed biosensor was finally validated for the detection of spiked bioavailable Hg(II) in environmental water samples.

Background: Loss to follow-up (LTFU) during post-operative surveillance of breast cancer patients is detrimental. The pattern of LTFU and its risk factors in Chinese breast cancer patients remains unknown., Method: Eligible non-metastatic breast cancer patients who underwent surgery at our institution between 2009 and 2012 were included. The clinicopathological features, as well as the LTFU status, were retrieved from the REDCap database. LTFU was defined as the absence of patients for at least 12 months since her last contact. 5-year LTFU was defined as the LTFU status of each patients at 5 years after surgery. The incidence and potential risk factors of LTFU were analyzed. A LTFU-risk score was developed to quantify the risk of LTFU., Results: A total of 1536 patients with breast cancer were included, and 411(26.8%) patients were 5-year LTFU. 198 patients were LTFU in the first year. Univariate and multivariate analysis revealed that age (younger and older), a lack of medical insurance, longer distance from residence to the hospital, pathology (DCIS/Paget's/Phyllodes), lymph node metastasis, the absence of endocrine therapy and fewer than five contact numbers were significantly and independently associated with the risk of LTFU. A LTFU-risk score was developed and was predictive of LTFU., Conclusions: A series of risk factors were significantly associated with post-operative LTFU of breast cancer patients. Although versatile piezoresistive pressure sensors show a great potential as human motion detection and wearable smart devices, it is still an issue to widen their working range and enhance their sensitivity. Herein, hollow-structured MXene-polydimethylsiloxane composites (MPCs) are fabricated by utilizing nickel foam as the three-dimensional substrate for dip-coating of MXene sheets followed by infiltrating of polydimethylsiloxane and etching of the nickel foam substrate. The resultant MPC performs a wide working range with bending angles of 0° to 180°, an excellent long-term reliability up to 1000 cycles under the bending angles of 15°, 30° and 150°, and a stable durability with a bending angle of 30° in a frequency range from 0.05 to 2 Hz as a bendable piezoresistive pressure sensor, which is attributed to the formation of dense conduction paths due to the interconnection of MXene sheets during the deformation of MPC. The sensor also exhibits an extremely low detection limit of 10 mg for pressure detection. Interestingly, the slippage of adjacent MXene sheets is beneficial for monitoring slight vibration of equipments and detecting subtle human motions. Thus, the MPC sensor could be applied for stereo sound and ultrasonic vibration monitoring, swallowing, facial muscle movement, and various intense motion detections, demonstrating its great potential as wearable smart devices., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Macroscopic three-dimensional catalytic materials could overcome the poor operability and avoid secondary pollution of common powdery counterparts, especially in flow-type setups. However, conventional isotropic graphene-based aerogels and foams have randomly distributed graphene sheets, which may cause stream erosion and reduce the flux seriously. Herein, for the first time, we design and fabricate a novel anisotropic CoFe 2 O 4 @graphene hybrid aerogel (CFO@GA-A) with a hydrothermal synthesis followed by directional-freezing and freeze-drying for a tube-like flow-type setup analogous to a wastewater discharge pipeline. The long and vertically aligned pores inside the aerogel provide an exceptional flux of 1100 L m -2 h -1 , 450% higher than that of the rough and zigzag paths in the isotropic CoFe 2 O 4 @graphene hybrid aerogel (CFO@GA-I), and the leaching of metal ions is obviously inhibited by relieving the erosion of CoFe 2 O 4 . Besides, the CFO@GA-A could sustain the scour of high-speed flowing wastewater and maintain its structural stability. Therefore, organic contaminants of indigo carmine, methyl orange, orange II, malachite green, phenol, and norfloxacin could readily flow over the nanocatalysts and be degraded rapidly within 7.5-12.5 min at varied flow rates from 60 to 120 mL h -1 . The CFO@GA-A also exhibits a much better long-term stability with removal efficiencies toward indigo carmine at 100%, 91%, and 85% for at least 30 h (60 mL h -1 ), 25 h (90 mL h -1 ), and 21 h (120 mL h -1 ), respectively. On the contrary, the CFO@GA-I exhibits unsatisfactory removal efficiencies of <40%. Interestingly, CFO@GA-A could also serve as building blocks to stack on each other for degrading intense flowing wastewater, exhibiting an outstanding composability. The high-flux and long-term stability make the CFO@GA-A promising as an ideal catalytic material for wastewater treatments.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of external application of Traditional Chinese Medicine (EATCM) on acute gouty arthritis (AGA)., Methods: Six electronic data bases were retrieved from their inception to march 2017. 15 randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) were included. The quality of the literatures was assessed according to Cochrane review criteria by using RevMan5.3 software; and related data was counted using Stata14.0 software., Results: There was no significant difference in C-reactiveprotein (CRP) between experimental intervention group and control group [(WMD = 1.093, 95% CI (－2.514, 4.701); P = 0.553)]. In terms of overall efficacy, the EATCM's treatment group was significantly superior to control group [(OR = 3.692; 95% CI (2.408, 5.661); P < 0.001)]. The EATCM was better than western medicine treatments or other interventions in reducing the adverse reactions [(OR = 0.135; 95% CI (0.067, 0.274); P < 0.001)]. All these funnel plots showed unlikelihood of publishing bias. But due to excessive heterogeneity, the statistical results of serum uric acid and visual analogue scale and CRP between the two groups became uncertain., Conclusion: The results indicate that EATCM may have greater overall efficacy with fewer adverse drug reactions, although the evidence is weak owing to the low methodological quality and the small number of the included trials.

Tumor cell migration is a critical step in cancer metastasis. Over-activated Notch pathway can promote the migration of cancer cells, especially in the breast cancer. However, the underlying mechanism of non-canonical Notch signaling in modulating the migration has not yet been clearly characterized. Here we demonstrated that DAPT, a gamma secretase inhibitor, inhibited protrusion formation and cell motility, and then reduced the migration of triple-negative breast cancer cells, through increasing the activity of Cdc42 by non-canonical Notch pathway. Phosphorylation of AKT on S473 was surprisingly increased when Notch signaling was inhibited by DAPT. Inhibition of PI3K and AKT by LY294002 and MK2206, respectively, or knockdown of AKT expression by siRNA blocked DAPT-induced activation of Cdc42. Moreover, immunofluorescence staining further showed that DAPT treatment reduced the formation of lamellipodia and induced actin cytoskeleton remodeling. Taken together, these results indicated that DAPT inhibited Notch signaling and consequently activated PI3K/AKT/Cdc42 signaling by non-canonical pathway, facilitated the formation of filopodia and inhibited the assembly of lamellipodia, and finally resulted in the decrease of migration activity of breast cancer cells.

Flexible pressure sensors still face a great challenge to combine fast frequency response, wide pressure range, multiple detection modes, satisfactory mechanical and environmental stability, and simple fabrication process into a sensor. Herein, flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors are fabricated by treating the backbone of polyurethane (PU) sponge with chitosan (CS) to obtain positively charged CS@PU sponge, followed by dip-coating of negatively charged Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene sheets. The resulting MXene@CS@PU sponge-based sensor provides a versatile sensing platform with potentials for detecting both small and large pressure signals. Due to the highly compressive resilience of the PU sponge and its polar interaction with the MXene sheets, the MXene@CS@PU sensor has high compressibility and stable piezoresistive response for compressive strains of up to 85% with a stress of 245.7 kPa, and it also exhibits a satisfactory reproducibility for 5000 compression-release cycles. Even after washing in water for 1 h, the sensor still shows good performances. With a rapid response time of only 19 ms and a low detection limit of 30 μN corresponding to a pressure of 9 Pa, the MXene sponge sensor is promising for detecting human physiological signals and insect movements. Meteorin-like (Metrnl) is a novel adipokine that is highly expressed in white adipose tissue. Metrnl stimulates energy expenditure and improves glucose tolerance in rodents. However, whether Metrnl plays a role in coronary artery disease (CAD) remains to be elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the association of serum Metrnl with CAD in Chinese patients. A total of 193 patients with CAD and 156 control subjects were enrolled in this study. Serum Metrnl concentration was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Anthropometric phenotypes, fasting glucose, serum lipids, and inflammatory cytokines were measured. Serum Metrnl was lower in CAD patients when compared to those controls (132.41 vs 173.17 pg/mL, P < 0.001). Serum Metrnl was negatively correlated with metabolic parameters, including body mass index, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol as well as inflammatory markers including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, IL-1β, and IL-11 even after adjustment for potential confounding variables (P < 0.05). In multivariable logistic regression analyses, compared to those in the highest tertile of serum Metrnl levels, subjects in the lowest tertile had the highest risks for CAD (adjusted OR = 2.63, 95% CI = 1.46-4.27, P = 0.001). After adjustment for potential confounding variables, serum Metrnl was also decreased as the number of stenosed vessels increased (P < 0.001). Furthermore, decreased Metrnl level was negatively correlated with the severity of CAD quantified by the Gensini score. This first case-control study shows significant associations of serum Metrnl with the presence and severity of CAD, suggesting Metrnl might be a new promising therapeutic target for CAD., (© 2018 The Authors. The safety of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in patients undergoing dual-chamber pacemaker (Medtronic's EnRhythm MRI SureScan IPG (implantable pulse generator) and CapSureFix MRI pacing electrodes) implantation were evaluated. A total of 86 patients undergoing this pacemaker implantation who were admitted to Huanggang Hospital from June 2006 to March 2017 were continuously selected. On average 6.8±2.3 months after the implantation, the first MRI scan was conducted. The mean scan time was 2.2±0.9 and mean duration was 45.6±12.3 min; mean follow-up visit period was 40.5±15.6 months, and after follow-up, all the abnormal symptoms of patients and pacemaker abnormalities after scans were recorded. Causes of receiving MRI scans included neurological diseases (27%), spinal diseases (14%), cancers (26%), joint injuries (25%) and visceral systems (8%). A total of 12 cases (14.0%) showed significant discomfort symptoms, 10 cases (11.6%) showed pacemaker abnormalities, and the incidence rate was 25.6%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the basic types of cardiovascular diseases, dependence on pacemakers, duration of education, pacing threshold, impedance and MRI scan time were related to the occurrence of adverse scan results (p<0.05). In conclusion, MRI scans show that MRI-compatible dual-chamber pacemaker was relatively safe.

Background The α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), an endogenous neuropeptide derived from proopiomelanocortin (POMC), has been identified to suppress inflammation and prevent osteoblast damage. Objective The present study was aimed to investigate the role of serum α-MSH in non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Methods Seventy-nine patients diagnosed with non-traumatic ONFH and 79 sex- and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Serum α-MSH concentrations were examined with a double antibody radioimmunoassay. The radiographic progression of ONFH was assessed by X-ray plain film according to the FICAT grading system. The symptomatic severity was evaluated by visual analogue scale scores, Harris hip scores and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores. The serum concentrations of protective marker adiponectin and bone necrosis inflammation factor IL-33 concentrations were also examined. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis curve was performed to explore the diagnostic value of α-MSH, adiponectin and IL-33 for radiographic progression. Results Serum α-MSH concentrations were significantly lower in ONFH patients than in healthy controls. The case group included 29 non-traumatic ONFH patients with FICAT grade I/II, 27 with grade III and 23 with grade IV. ONFH patients with grade I/II had significantly higher α-MSH concentrations in serum compared with those with FICAT grades III and IV. ONFH patients with FICAT grade III showed significantly elevated concentrations of α-MSH in serum compared with those with FICAT grade IV. Serum α-MSH concentrations were negatively associated with radiographic progression by FICAT grading system, and symptomatic severity defined by visual analogue scale scores, Harris hip scores and WOMAC scores. In addition, serum α-MSH concentrations were positively related to the expression of adiponectin and negatively associated with IL-33. ROC analysis curve demonstrated that α-MSH exhibited the equal value for the diagnosis of ONFH radiographic progression compared with IL-33. Conclusions Serum α-MSH may act as a protective biomarker for non-traumatic ONFH. Systematic application of α-MSH serving as an adjunctive therapy for treating non-traumatic ONFH deserves further investigation.

Although graphene-based thermal interface materials (TIMs) have great potentials in removing excess heat generated during highly efficient running of electronic devices, their practical applications are usually limited by their unsatisfactory thermal conductions, which are mainly caused by unsatisfactory dispersion and distribution, low loading, and low quality of graphene sheets, as well as the thermal interfacial resistance between graphene sheets and polymer matrix. Herein, we develop vertically aligned graphene hybrid foams (GHFs) with high densities by hydrothermal reduction of graphene oxide in the presence of high-quality graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) followed by air-drying. The reduced graphene oxide sheets play an important role in constructing a vertically aligned interconnection network for accommodating GNPs during the hydrothermal reduction process, while the incorporated GNPs not only make the thermal conductance network denser but also prevent excessive shrinkage of the foams during air-drying. More critically, graphitization of GHF at 2800 °C removes the residual oxygen-containing groups and heals the defects of their reduced graphene oxide component, leading to high-quality graphene foams. The resultant vertically aligned high-quality graphene porous architecture with high density as an ideal thermal conductance network of TIMs is highly efficient in improving the thermal conductivity of its epoxy composite, which exhibits an ultrahigh through-plane thermal conductivity of 35.5 W m -1 K -1 at a graphene loading of 19.0 vol %. The excellent thermally conductive performance makes the annealed GHF/epoxy composites suitable for the thermal management.

Dispersion and spatial distribution of graphene sheets play crucial roles in tailoring mechanical and functional properties of their polymer composites. Anisotropic graphene aerogels (AGAs) with highly aligned graphene networks are prepared by a directional-freezing followed by freeze-drying process and exhibit different microstructures and performances along the axial (freezing direction) and radial (perpendicular to the axial direction) directions. Thermal annealing at 1300 °C significantly enhances the quality of both AGAs and conventional graphene aerogels (GAs). The aligned graphene/epoxy composites show highly anisotropic mechanical and electrical properties and excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiencies at very low graphene loadings. Compared to the epoxy composite with 0.8 wt % thermally annealed GAs (TGAs) with an EMI shielding effectiveness of 27 dB, the aligned graphene/epoxy composite with 0.8 wt % thermally treated AGAs (TAGAs) has an enhanced EMI shielding effectiveness of 32 dB along the radial direction with a slightly decreased shielding effectiveness of 25 dB along the axial direction. With 0.2 wt % TAGA, its epoxy composite exhibits a shielding effectiveness of 25 dB along the radial direction, which meets the requirement of ∼20 dB for practical EMI shielding applications.

Objective: To compare the clinical results of early and delayed intramedullary nailing and locked plating for the treatment of multi-segments tibial fractures of type AO/ASIF-42C2., Methods: Between January 2010 and January 2013,45 patients with multi-segments closed tibial fractures of AO/ASIF-42C2 were treated by early primary intramedullary nailing and locked plating in 20 cases as early group and delayed in 25 cases as delayed group. In early group,20 cases included 13 males and 7 females with an average age of (37.9±14.3) years old ranging from 20 to 56 years;according to soft tissue injury Tscherne classification, 8 fractures were frade I,12 were grade II. In delayed group, 25 cases included 17 males and 8 females with an average age of (38.7±17.2) years old ranging from 24 to 55 years,4 fractures were grade I ,19 were grade II ,2 were grade III. The operative time, blood loss, hospital stay,fracture healing time and complications were recorded. At final follow-up, the Johner-Wruhs score were used to evaluate functional efficacy, and the posterior-anterior and lateral X-ray to evaluate fracture reduction and alignment., Results: All the patients were followed up for (12.5±2.5) months in early group and (13.2±2.8) months in delayed group (P>0.05). No wounds infections were happened. At the last follow-up, the mean range of knee joint was 10°-0°-120°. According to Johner-Wruhs scoring,there were 15 cases in excellent,3 in good,fair in 2 in early group; 21 in excellent,2 in good,2 in fair. The average operative time,blood loss had no significant differences between two groups (P>0.05), but hospital stay in early group was significantly shorter than those in delayed group(P<0.05). Average fracture healing time of early group and delayed group were (5.3±2.6) months and (6.0±2.9) months, respectively (P>0.05)., Conclusion: For multi-segments tibial fractures of type AO/ASIF-42C2 with preoperative minor soft tissue injuries lighter of Tscherne grade I or II, early primary intramedullary nailing and locked plating does not significantly increase the postoperative incidence of soft tissue complications for patients. The early and delayed primary intramedullary nailing and locked plating for treatment of AO/ASIF-42C2 proximal third tibial fractures can get similar curative effect.

In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which the chemotherapeutic agent paclitaxel (PTX) induced the expression of B7-H1 immunosuppressive molecules in the human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line SW480 and the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG2. We found ptX induced B7-H1 protein expression in SW480 and HepG2 cells as demonstrated by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry and mRNA expression by using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Moreover, PTX treatment induced Erk½ phosphorylation in both cell lines. PTX-increased B7-H1 mRNA expression was significantly blocked by MEK inhibitor U0126. However, the protein expression caused by PTX was only partially blocked by U0126. Our results suggest that PTX upregulated B7-H1 expression in cultured SW480 and HepG2 cells via both transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms. This may help us better understand PTX-related tumor immune evasion.

Background: The Wenchuan earthquake was an enormous devastating disaster and caused mass casualties. The descriptive analysis presented here serves as a reference not only for present injury intervention but also for future earthquake disaster response., Methods: A total of 205 patients with a musculoskeletal injury were admitted in two teaching hospitals. We conducted a retrospective review of medical records to document the injury profile, chief complaints, damage locations and types, subsequent treatment, and prognosis., Results: Of the 205 patients, fracture was the major type of injury (78.0%). Forty patients were determined to have crush injuries and 19 patients had crush syndromes. Open fractures, multiple fractures and comminuted fractures were common. Fracture-associated neural injuries and trauma-associated infections were also common. Surgical treatments included debridement, bone traction, external fixation, open reduction and internal fixation, and spinal fixation. All the patients were effectively treated with few complications, a low deformity rate and no death., Conclusion: For emergency conditions after a major earthquake, pre-hospital emergency care is highly important. After the patients are transported to the hospital, we should plan individualized treatment according to the patients' respective clinical features, and at the same time, prevent and cure the related complications in a timely manner in order to reduce mortality and disability rates.

Objective: The objective of our study was to clarify the anatomic and radiologic features of the extraperitoneal fasciae and fascial spaces associated with the rectum., Materials and Methods: Fourteen embalmed cadavers were studied: two for gross anatomy; six for sectional anatomy, of which two underwent histologic study; and six for space perfusion study. These examinations were followed by CT and cross dissection to observe the pelvic extraperitoneal fasciae and the role of the fasciae in the anatomic subdivision and communication of the fascial spaces. Eighty healthy subjects underwent CT or MRI to identify the imaging characteristics of the pelvic fasciae., Results: Cadaver dissection and histologic study revealed a distinct sheath consisting of dense connective tissue encasing the rectum and surrounding adipose tissue like a sleeve that divided the rectal extraperitoneal space into the perirectal space and pararectal space. Perfusion studies showed communication between the pararectal spaces and the vesical extraperitoneal space anteriorly and the anterior pararenal space superiorly, but not with the perirectal space. In healthy subjects, both CT (95.0%) and MRI (97.5%) showed a circular or linear structure representing the rectal fascia outside the rectum encasing the rectum and its surrounding adipose tissue., Conclusion: The extraperitoneal segment of the rectum and its surrounding adipose tissue are encased by a fascia, like a sleeve, that can be seen on CT and MRI in healthy populations. The fascia divides the rectal extraperitoneal space into the perirectal space and pararectal space, and it may prevent lesions of the rectum from spreading to other pelvic extraperitoneal spaces.

The microstructure and spectral properties of Er3+ doped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics with high fluorine content were reported. Two samples with the same initial contents (50SiO2-45PbF2-5PbO-1ErF3) were prepared under the different preparation parameters. The final fluorine contents were detected by a fluoride ion selective electrode. The results shows that the final fluorine contents increase by covering crucibles with corundum lid during melt. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), absorption spectra and upconversion luminescence spectra. The results show that PbF2 crystals were precipitated in the sample with high fluorine content before heat treatment. And the PbF2 crystals precipitated inside the glass matrix are spherical with diameters of approximately 10-15 nm in size from the high resolution TEM micrograph. The absorption spectra, J-O parameters and the upconversion spectra show that the Er3+ ions were located in crystalline and vitreous mixed states. It is different from the sample with low fluorine content which is completely amorphous. After heat treatment, Er3+ ions that remain in the glassy phase entered into fluoride nanocrystals in the sample with high fluorine content. The fluorine environment decreases non-radiative transfer which eases the upconversion processes. Hence, the upconversion luminescence intensity of Er3+ ions in the high fluorine content sample after heat treatment is much stronger than that in the precursor sample.

Background: Findings of adrenal tuberculosis with MR scanning have never been reported in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine MR characteristics for tuberculous Addison's disease, and evaluate the utility of MR imaging as a useful diagnosis tool of the entity., Patients and Methods: Eighteen patients with proven adrenal tuberculosis were included. All patients had conventional T(1)- and T(2)-weighted image. Among the 18 patients, contrast-enhanced T(1)WI had been done in 10. MR manifestations were retrospectively evaluated blindly for the location, contour, signal intensity, and enhancement patterns., Results: All patients clinically exhibited hyperpigmentation and lethargy. Physical examination revealed weight loss, signs of dehydration, and hypotension. Biochemical investigation confirmed adrenal insufficiency. The adrenal glands were affected bilaterally in 16 patients (89%) and unilaterally in 2 patients (11%). Thirty-three glands were enlarged (97%), while one was atrophic (3%). Of the 33 enlarged glands, 20 (61%) were mass-like and 13 (39%) had preserved contours. The central region of the enlarged glands demonstrated T(2) hypo- or iso-SI in 21 (62%) and T(2) hyper-SI in 12 (38%). Among the 18 enlarged glands that had contrast MR, 15 (83%) had peripheral rim enhancement, 1 (6%) had homogeneous enhancement, and the last two (11%) had heterogeneous enhancement., Conclusion: MR characteristics can reveal certain pathological changes of adrenal tuberculosis, and MR imaging could be recommended as the imaging modality for the diagnosis of the entity.

Background: In view of the descriptions of the CT manifestations on the greater omentum (GO) were not precise and detailed enough in the previous literature, we tried to evaluate the radiologic-anatomical features of the GO and to address the related clinical implications for the radiologic diagnosis and surgical application., Methods: We evaluated the GO by using multi-detector row CT (MDCT) scanning in 50 individuals correlating with anatomical basis and clinical application. Emphasis was placed on the following items: the anatomical distribution and location of the GO; the CT manifestations of the vasculature, fatty tissue and lymph nodes., Results: The gastro-epiploic vessel, the landmark for delineating the GO, was visualized in 50/50 cases (100%). The gastro-colic vein was detected in 34/50 cases (68%). The free-hanging portion, 48 cases revealed, seemed to have the capability of 'migration': it is located in the subphrenic spaces in 9/48 cases (19%) and distributed in the right lower quadrant predominantly in 10/48 cases (21%). Three-dimensional reformatted images, obtained in five cases, demonstrated the return of the gastro-epiploic vein distinctly. Lymph nodes were rarely detected within the GO., Conclusion: The depicted omental vessels, visualized by using multi-planar reconstruction images together with three-dimensional reformatted images, played a crucial role in delineating the GO comprehensively. It can provide the valuable data for the radiologic diagnosis and surgical therapy planning including surgery of reconstruction, pancreas, portal hypertension as well as infections and neoplastic diseases.

By applying nitrogen flow model for farming-feeding system (NFM-FFS) which integrates soil full nitrogen balance model with inventory analysis for agricultural pollution, nitrogen flow in China farming-feeding systems and its environmental impact are analyzed. In 2003, although surface nitrogen surpluses, nitrogen deficit in agricultural soil system in China is estimated to be 623.9 x 10(4) t, and 13.7 kg/hm2 averagely, which implies that soils in China farming-feeding systems are at the risk of nitrogen content decline and potential soil degradation as a whole. With a intense nutrient input in arable land and no extra fertilizer input in grassland in China, there is a nitrogen surplus of 1761.9 x 10(4) t, averagely 142.8 kg/hm2, while grassland has a deficit of 2,385.7 x 10(4) t, averagely 90.7 kg/hm2. As a result, existing negative impact of cropping activities on water environment as well as grassland degradation may be effectively abated by balancing nitrogen input between arable land and grassland. Total nitrogen loss from China farming-feeding system is 2,266 x 10(4) t, including 495.8 x 10(4) t exported into surface water by drainage and surface runoff, and 102.4 x 10(4) t into groundwater by leaching. Lost nitrogen is to be deposited in rivers, lakes and marine system, and is less likely to return to farming-feeding system. Fertilizer should be the priority of rural pollution control and management because of its dominant contribution to nitrogen exported into water environment from farming-feeding system.

Background: The incidence of abdominal tuberculous lymphadenopathy never appears low. In addition to infecting the abdominal lymph nodes through the digestive tract, the tuberculosis bacteria can also infect the abdominal lymph nodes and extra-nodal organs through hematogenous dissemination. This study investigated contrast-enhanced CT features and anatomic locations of hematogenous disseminated tuberculosis involving abdominal organs., Methods: Thirteen patients with documented hematogenous disseminated tuberculosis involving abdominal organs were recruited. Contrast-enhanced CT scanning was carried out in the abdomen of all patients. CT images were retrospectively analyzed for the size, attenuation, enhancement patterns, and anatomic distribution of the foci in infected lymph node, liver, spleen, and kidney., Results: Hematogenous disseminated tuberculosis dominantly affected lymph nodes in the hepatoduodenal ligament (84.6%), the portacaval space (84.6%), the root of the mesentery (84.6%), the peripancreatic region (84.6%), the periceliac region (76.9%), the hepatogastric ligament (69.2%), and the upper and lower paraaortic region (both were 69.2%). Out of the 13 cases studied, 12 (92.3%) had lymphadenopathy with peripheral enhancement accompanied by multilocular appearance; 10 (76.9%) had homogeneous hepatomegaly; 13 (100%) had inhomogeneous splenomegaly accompanied by scattered low-density lesions with peripheral enhancement; and 8 (61.5%) had low-density lesions in the kidney with peripheral enhancement., Conclusion: Anatomically, peritoneal and retroperitoneal lymph nodes are most susceptible to hematogenous disseminated tuberculosis. The hepatomegaly manifested to be homogeneous in most cases while the splenomegaly is of frequently inhomogeneous attenuation. All these characteristics are closely related to the infection routes and pathologic features of abdominal hematogenous disseminated tuberculosis.

By applying OECD surface soil nitrogen balance methodology, the framework, methodology and database for nutrient balance budget in China are established to evaluate the impact of nutrient balance on agricultural production and water environment. Results show that nitrogen and phosphorus surplus in China are 640 x 10(4) t and 98 x 10(4) t respectively, and nitrogen and phosphorus surplus intensity in China are 16.56 kg/hm2 and 2.53 kg/hm2 respectively. Because of striking spatial difference of nutrient balance across the country, China is seeing a dual-challenge of nutrient surplus management as well as nutrient deficit management. Chemical fertilizer and livestock manure are best targets to perform nutrient surplus management due to their marked contributions to nutrient input. However, it is not cost-effective to implement a uniform management for all regions since nutrient input structures of them vary considerably.

Adrenal glands are common sites of diseases. With dramatically increased use of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, more and more uncommon adrenal masses have been detected incidentally at abdominal examinations performed for other purposes. In this article, uncommon adrenal masses are classified as cystic masses (endothelial cysts, epithelial cysts, parasitic cysts, and pseudocysts), solid masses (ganglioneuroma, ganglioneuroblastoma, extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP), neurilemmoma, and lymphoma), fat-containing masses (myelolipoma, teratoma), and infectious masses (tuberculoma), and the imaging features of these uncommon masses are demonstrated. Although most of these lesions do not have specific imaging features, some fat-containing masses and cystic lesions present with characteristic appearances, such as myelolipoma, teratoma, and hydatid. Combination with histopathologic characteristic of these uncommon masses of adrenal gland, radiological features of these lesions on CT and MR imaging can be accurately understood with more confidences. Moreover, CT and MRI are highly accurate in localization of uncommon adrenal masses, and useful to guide surgical treatments.

We report here on a 64-year-old woman with extramedullary plasmacytoma involving the bilateral adrenal glands. Primary adrenal extramedullary plasmacytoma is extremely rare and only three cases of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the unilateral adrenal gland have currently been reported on. This case is of interest in that the bilateral adrenals were involved. In this article, we present the MRI findings and we briefly review the relevant literature.

Purpose: To investigate the utility of multidetector CT (MDCT) in the diagnosis of gastric bare area (GBA) invasion by proximal gastric carcinoma (PGC)., Methods: Sixty-eight consecutive patients with biopsy-proven PGC underwent MDCT scan prior to gastrectomy. We evaluated the CT images separately for the site, size, depth, lymph node, and enhancement characteristic of each case. Each postsurgical stomach specimen was axially sectioned and comparison was made to determine the correlation between the CT findings and the pathological examination of each tumor bearing slice., Results: The sensitivity for detecting GBA involvement in patients with PGC was 84%. MDCT correctly identified 32 of 38 patients with GBA invasion and 10/13 (77%) tumors with metastatic lymph node greater than 5 mm in GBA or subphrenic retroperitoneal space. 33/36 (92%) patients with tumor extension within the edge of the gastric wall and 28/32 (88%) patients with tumor infiltration into subphrenic fat were correctly identified. MDCT correctly predicted the infiltration of tumor into the diaphragm in all 14 patients and identified 6/11 (55%) patients with gastrophrenic ligament invasion., Conclusion: MDCT may be of value in assessing the important radiological characteristics of GBA invasion in patients with PGC.

Purpose: To describe CT morphology of untreated adrenal tuberculosis during the different stages of the natural history of the disease and to evaluate the diagnostic implications of CT features., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated CT features in 42 patients with documented adrenal tuberculosis for the location, size, morphology, and enhancement patterns shown on CT images. The clinical duration were correlated with the CT features., Results: Of the 42 patients with untreated adrenal tuberculosis, bilaterally enlarged adrenal glands were revealed in 38 cases (91%), unilaterally enlarged in 3 cases (7%), and normal size in 1 case (2%). Of the 41 cases (98%) with enlargement, mass-like enlargement was seen in 20 cases (49%) and enlargement with preserved contours in 21 cases (51%). Peripheral rim enhancement presented in 22 cases (52%) on contrast-enhanced CT. Non-enhanced CT scan revealed calcification in 21 cases (50%). As the duration of Addison's disease increased, the presence of calcification and contour preservation increased concomitantly (p<0.001), whereas peripheral rim enhancement and mass-like enlargement decreased concomitantly on CT images (p<0.001)., Conclusion: CT may be helpful in diagnosing adrenal tuberculosis when clinically suspected, and CT features are correlated to the clinical duration of Addison's disease.

The aim of the present study is to determine imaging criteria for differentiating tuberculosis from primary tumors in the adrenal gland on contrast-enhanced CT. Non-contrast and contrast-enhanced CT features in 108 patients with adrenal tuberculosis (n = 34) and primary tumor (n = 74) were retrospectively assessed for the location, size, calcification and enhancement patterns. The primary tumors included 41 adenomas, 11 pheochromocytomas, 4 carcinomas, 3 lymphomas, 6 myelolipomas, 6 ganglioneuromas, 2 neurilemmomas and 1 ganglioneuroblastoma. Biochemical investigation was performed for all patients. Of the tuberculosis cases, 31 (91%) invaded with bilateral involvement, while 7 (9%) of the primary tumors invaded with bilateral involvement (P < 0.001). Tuberculosis often showed calcification (20 of 34; 59%), whereas primary tumors infrequently showed calcification (6 of 74; 8%; P < 0.001). Low attenuation in the center with peripheral rim enhancement was more commonly seen in tuberculosis (16 of 34; 47%) than in primary tumors (7 of 74; 9%; P < 0.001). In the determination of tuberculosis, the highest sensitivity (91%) and accuracy (91%) were obtained with bilateral involvement, and the highest specificity (99%) was obtained with the contour preserved. In the determination of primary tumors using a combination of having unilateral involvement and being mass-like, the outcome was a sensitivity of 91%, specificity of 94% and accuracy of 92%. CT findings can differentiate tuberculosis from a primary tumor of the adrenal glands with high sensitivity and an acceptable specificity when combined with the endocrinological examination.

Objective: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the correlation between the enhancement parameters of dynamic CT; the carcinoma tissue microvessel density (MVD, a hotspot method to provide a histologic assessment of tumor vascularity); and tumor nuclear grade in renal cell carcinomas., Subjects and Methods: Twenty-four patients with histologically diagnosed renal cell carcinoma underwent dynamic enhanced CT. Enhancement parameters, slope of the time-density curve, the density difference before and after tissue enhancement (deltaH), tissue blood ratio (TBR), and area under the time-density curve (AR), were calculated for all lesions. Pathology slides corresponding to the CT plane were stained using mouse antihuman CD34 monoclonal antibody and H and E. Fuhrman nuclear grade was used. Vascular hot spots of microvessels were recorded. Spearman's rank correlation was performed to determine the strength of the relationship between enhancement parameters, MVD determinations, and tumor nuclear grade., Results: MVD with CD34 staining revealed uneven distribution of positively stained vascular endothelial cells in renal cell carcinoma lesions. Heterogeneous distribution of contrast enhancement was seen among and within individual tumors. The tumors appeared as uneven patterns on time-density curves of renal cell carcinoma lesions. Enhancement parameters of H (median, 21.0 H; range, 2.2-105.8 H), TBR (median, 39%; range, 10.7-154.7%), AR (median, 1.58 H x sec; range, 0.23-3.67 H x sec), and slope (median, 2.76; range, 0.53-6.76) varied greatly. Renal cell carcinoma tissue MVD significantly correlated with all enhancement parameters of dynamic CT. The correlation coefficients (r) were 0.62, 0.54, 0.55, and 0.44, respectively, for delta H, slope, TBR, and AR (p < 0.0 5). All enhancement parameters did not significantly correlate with tumor nuclear grade. They were not predictive of nuclear grade., Conclusion: Enhancement parameters of dynamic CT may be suited to evaluate tumor vascularity in vivo. Dynamic enhanced CT images may reflect the heterogeneity of tumor angiogenesis on the basis of the correlation between enhancement parameters and MVD of renal cell carcinoma.

Aim: To investigate the correlation of enhancement features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) revealed by single-level dynamic spiral CT scanning (DSCT) with tumor microvessel density (MVD), and to determine the validity of DSCT in assessing in vivo tumor angiogenic activity of HCC., Methods: Twenty six HCC patients were diagnosed histopathologically. DSCT was performed for all patients according to standard scanning protocol. Time-density curves were generated, relevant curve parameters were measured, and gross enhancement morphology was analyzed. Operation was performed to remove HCC lesions 1 to 2 weeks following CT scan. Histopathological slides were carefully prepared for the standard F(8)RA immunohistochemical staining and tumor microvessel counting. Enhancement imaging features of HCC lesions were correlatively studied with tumor MVD and its intra-tumor distribution characteristics., Results: On DSCT images of HCC lesions, three patterns of time-density curve and three types of gross enhancement morphology were recognized. Histomorphologically, the distribution of positively stained tumor endothelial cells within tumor was categorized into 3 types. Curve parameters such as peak enhancement value and contrast enhancement ratio were significantly correlated with tumor tissue MVD (r=0.508 and r=0.423, P<0.01 and P<0.05 respectively). Both the pattern of time-density curve and the gross enhancement morphology of HCC lesions were also correlated with tumor MVD, and reflected the distributive features of tumor microvessels within HCC lesions. Correlation between the likelihood of intrahepatic metastasis of HCC lesions with densely enhanced pseudocapsules and rich pseudocapsular tumor MVD was found., Conclusion: Enhancement imaging features of HCC lesions on DSCT scanning are correlated with tumor MVD, and reflect the intra-tumor distribution characteristics of tumor microvessels. DSCT is valuable in assessing the angiogenic activity and tumor neovascularity of HCC patients in vivo.
