Accurate long-term PM 2.5 prediction is crucial for environmental management and public health. However, previous studies have mainly focused on short-term air quality point predictions, neglecting the importance of accurately predicting the long-term trends of PM 2.5 and studying the uncertainty of PM 2.5 concentration changes. The traditional approaches have limitations in capturing nonlinear relationships and complex dynamic patterns in time series, and they often overlook the credibility of prediction results in practical applications. Therefore, there is still much room for improvement in long-term prediction of PM 2.5 . This study proposes a novel long-term point and interval prediction framework for urban air quality based on multi-source spatial and temporal data, which further quantifies the uncertainty and volatility of the prediction based on the accurate PM 2.5 point prediction. In this model, firstly, multi-source datasets from multiple monitoring stations are preprocessed. Subsequently, spatial clustering of stations based on POI data is performed to filter out strongly correlated stations, and feature selection is performed to eliminate redundant features. In this paper, the ConvFormer-KDE model is presented, whereby local patterns and short-term dependencies among multivariate variables are mined through a convolutional neural network (CNN), long-term dependencies among time-series data are extracted using the Transformer model, and a direct multi-output strategy is employed to realize the long-term point prediction of PM 2.5 concentration. KDE is utilized to derive prediction intervals for PM 2.5 concentration at confidence levels of 85%, 90%, and 95%, respectively, reflecting the uncertainty inherent in long-term trends of PM 2.5 . The performance of ConvFormer-KDE was compared with a list of advanced models. Experimental results showed that ConvFormer-KDE outperformed baseline models in long-term point- and interval-prediction tasks for PM 2.5 . The ConvFormer-KDE can provide a valuable early warning basis for future PM 2.5 changes from the aspects of point and interval prediction.

Signal amplification strategies have emerged as a prominent tool in the field of improving the detection sensitivity of small extracellular vesicles (sEVs). It is important to highlight that the utilization of signal quenching strategies is not commonly implemented. A detection technique for sEVs was established based on the unwinding of G-quadruplex using Klenow fragment polymerase (KF), which served as an inspiration for this study. This system is characterized by its simplicity and lack of labeling, making it an efficient approach for signal quenching. In the presence of sEVs, the CD63 aptamer in the capture@sMBs complex binds with the CD63 protein on the surface of sEVs to release trigger sequences, which were employed as a primer to mediate the DNA polymerase/endonuclease-assisted signal recycling. The signal recycling process produces numerous single-stranded DNA sequences that can bind to the toehold section of the G-quadruplex. This leads to the rupture of the G-quadruplex structure and the subsequent deactivation of a DNAzyme generated by the G-quadruplex structure and hemin, thereby inhibiting its biological catalytic function. Consequently, the G-quadruplex structure would undergo a transformation to a duplex structure, leading to the emergence of a discernible differential signal that can be noticed in a majority of instances, even without the aid of magnification devices. The decrease in the prominent signal allows for the efficient analysis of target sEVs, which exhibit a notably low detection limit. In addition to the detection of sEVs, the approach has also been utilized for the investigation of miRNA-21. The approach demonstrates a high level of selectivity and robustness in its capacity to differentiate between target miRNA and base-mismatched miRNA as well as other miRNA families. The purpose of this study is to expand and deepen research in the field of safety production, explore the role of enterprises as decision-making entities in safety production, analyze the role of different types of decision-making behaviors in the process of enterprise safety production, and provide certain theoretical guidance for multi-agent decision-making in safety production. By summarizing and comparing the existing dual system of supply chain safety management, this study proposes dividing supply chain safety management into the two categories of safety organization and safety research and development (safety R&D) in the context of digitalization. Differential equations are established to describe a two-level supply chain safety management problem including manufacturers and suppliers. The research results show that, compared with the Nash equilibrium, when there are strong manufacturers involved in safety management cooperation, the manufacturer's safety R&D subsidy to suppliers improves the total revenue of the supply chain. When the manufacturer's safety organization supervision efficiency is high, the Stackelberg equilibrium is lower. It is a Pareto improvement for the manufacturer to supervise the supplier's safety organization to the Nash equilibrium. In the case of dual safety cooperation in the supply chain, when there are strong manufacturers, R&D subsidies have a crowding out effect on the safety organization cooperation. The disclosure of work safety information of listed companies in high-risk industries is an important aspect of their social responsibility, and it is also an inevitable requirement to meet the right of stakeholders to know, which has a far-reaching impact on the development of enterprises. In order to clarify the impact mechanism of work safety information disclosure on enterprise performance of listed companies in high-risk industries. 222 listed companies in high-risk industries were taken as the research object, and the multiple regression analysis method was used to analyze the relationship between the level of work safety information disclosure of enterprises and their financial performance, safety performance and social reputation. The results show that the work safety information disclosure of listed companies in high-risk industries has a positive impact on corporate financial performance, safety performance and social reputation; unabsorbed slack resources have a positive U-shaped regulatory effect on work safety information disclosure and enterprise social reputation; The shareholding ratio of institutional investors has an inverted U-shaped regulatory effect on the positive relationship between work safety information disclosure and enterprise social reputation. This study has enriched the theoretical and practical exploration of research on work safety information disclosure. As Chi na's shipping industry continues to develop, ship emissions have become a significant source of pollutants. Consequently, it has become imperative to comprehend accurately the nature and attributes of ship pollutant emissions and understand their causation and effect as a crucial aspect of pollution control and legislation. This paper employs high-precision automatic identification system (AIS) dynamic and static data, along with pollutant emission parameters, to estimate the pollutant emissions from a ship's main engine, auxiliary engine, and boiler using a dynamic approach. Additionally, the study considers the sailing state and trajectory of the vessel and analyzes the characteristics of ship carbon emissions. Taking Tianjin Port as an example, this study conducts a multi-dimensional analysis of pollutant emissions to gain insight into the causation and effect of pollutants based on the collected big AIS data. The results show that the pollutant emissions in this region are mainly concentrated in the vicinity of Tianjin Port land port area, Dagusha Channel, and the Main Shipping Channel of Tianjin Xingang Fairway. Carbon emissions peak in September and are lower in June and December. Through accurate analysis of pollutant emission sources and emission characteristics in the region, this paper establishes the regular relationship between pollutant emissions and possible influencing factors and provides data support for China to formulate accurate pollutant emission reduction policies and regulate ship construction technology and carbon trading., (© 2023. Industrial parks make great contributions to the local economy, society, and culture, but they have also encountered many problems, such as limited resources, the longevity of ecological restoration, and the contagion of safety accidents. As a socioeconomic and ecological composite system formed by the interaction of multiple stakeholders, the solutions to succeed in workplace sustainability in industrial parks are still not known. The purpose of this study is to explore how to integrate existing resources to achieve a win-win situation in industrial park safety and environmental protection issues. According to Actor-network Theory and a systematic search, this study identifies the relevant subjects from selected 24 studies and clarifies the interactions made by these subjects. Based on the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), the Psychological Reactance Theory (PRT), and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we revealed the psychological impact factors of individuals' private car purchase intentions during the new normal of COVID-19. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and Bayesian network (BN) were used to analyzed the car purchase decision-making mechanism. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect empirical data from April 20th to May 26th of 2020 in China. We investigated 645 participants and analyzed the data. The SEM results showed that conditional value, pro-car-purchasing attitude, and perceived behavioral control, health value, and cost factors have significant direct effects on car purchase intention. According to BN's prediction of purchase intention, the probability of high purchase intention grew by 47.6%, 97.3% and 163.0%, respectively, with perceived behavioral control, pro-car-purchasing attitude, and conditional value shifting from "low" to "medium" and "high". This study provided a new perspective for researchers to explore the purchase intention of cars during the epidemic. Meanwhile, we could provide a reference for the government and enterprises to develop measures related to the automobile market."

Employee safety behavior is a basic element of enterprise work safety. The results of accident investigations and risk assessments in enterprises indicate that management factors are some of the most important factors that affect employee safety behavior. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the behavior of front-line managers (FLMs) and employee safety behavior by integrating a qualitative method, i.e., the interpretive structural model (ISM), and a quantitative method, i.e., the Bayesian network (BN). The results of the BN analysis showed that safety incentives and safety communication were the best predictors of safety participation, while safety supervision and safety control were the best predictors of safety compliance. Moreover, the results revealed that an instantaneous improvement of safety communication, safety incentives, safety supervision and safety guidance was the most effective joint measure to reach a high-level of safety behavior of employees in the workplace.

Accurate and fine-grained prediction of PM 2.5 concentration is of great significance for air quality control and human physical and mental health. Traditional approaches, such as time series, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) or graph convolutional networks (GCNs), cannot effectively integrate spatial-temporal and meteorological factors and manage dynamic edge relationships among scattered monitoring stations. In this paper, a spatial-temporal causal convolution network framework, ST-CCN-PM 2.5 , is proposed. Both the spatial effects of multi-source air pollutants and meteorological factors are considered via spatial attention mechanism. Time-dependent features in causal convolution networks are extracted by stacked dilated convolution and time attention. All the hyper-parameters in ST-CCN-PM 2.5 are tuned by Bayesian optimization. Haikou air monitoring station data are employed with a series of baselines (AR, MA, ARMA, ANN, SVR, GRU, LSTM and ST-GCN). Final results include the following points: (1) For a single station, the RMSE , MAE and R 2 values of ST-CCN-PM 2.5 decreased by 27.05%, 10.38% and 3.56% on average, respectively. (2) For all stations, ST-CCN-PM 2.5 achieve the best performance in win-tie-loss experiments. The numbers of winning stations are 68, 63, and 64 out of 95 stations in RMSE ( MSE ), MAE , and R 2 , respectively. In addition, the mean MSE , RMSE and MAE of ST-CCN-PM 2.5 are 4.94, 2.17 and 1.31, respectively, and the R 2 value is 0.92. (3) Shapley analysis shows wind speed is the most influencing factor in fine-grained PM 2.5 concentration prediction. The effects of CO and temperature on PM 2.5 prediction are moderately significant. Friedman test under different resampling further confirms the advantage of ST-CCN-PM 2.5 . The ST-CCN-PM 2.5 provides a promising direction for fine-grained PM 2.5 prediction.

Due to the limited work safety resources and the poor awareness of work safety from business owners with absolute decision-making power, safety accidents frequently occur in Chinese micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in high-risk industries. This study identifies the influencing factors of work safety behavior from MSEs, government safety supervision departments, and work safety service agencies. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), the mechanism model of work safety behavior is built from the aspects of behavior attitude, subjective norms, behavior control cognition, past behaviors, and risk awareness of the enterprise. Based on the interview with nearly 600 MSEs in the east of China over 6 months, the results show that the work safety awareness of the business owner determines the work safety lever of the enterprise, and the work safety behavior of MSEs is a passive restraint behavior. Background: Although positive safety leadership has attracted increasingly academic and practical attention due to its critical effects on followers' safety compliance behavior, far fewer steps have been taken to study the safety impact of laissez-faire leadership., Objective: This study examines the relationships between safety-specific leader reward and punishment omission (laissez-faire leadership) and followers' safety compliance, and the mediations of safety-specific distributive justice and role ambiguity., Methods: On a two-wave online survey of 307 workers from high-risk enterprises in China, these relationships were tested by structural equations modeling and bootstrapping procedures., Results: Findings show that safety-specific leader reward omission was negatively associated with followers' safety compliance through the mediating effects of safety-specific distributive justice and role ambiguity. Guiding core enterprises to participate in supply chain work safety governance is an innovative mode of work safety control, which has an important impact on improving the work safety level of small and medium-sized enterprises in the supply chain. Through in-depth interviews, the grounded theory is adopted to explore the driving factors of work safety management behaviors of core enterprise. It is found that the work safety management behavior of the core enterprise is driven by both internal and external factors. External driving factors are the main category of institutional pressure composed of regulatory pressure, normative pressure, and cognitive pressure. Internal driving factors are divided into the main category of behavioral awareness and the behavioral capability of the core enterprises. The behavioral awareness is composed of responsibility sense, problem cognition and behavioral effect perception. The behavioral capability is composed of safety management strength and safety coordination capability. Institutional pressure, behavioral awareness, and behavioral capability all influence the work safety management behavior of core enterprise in supply chain significantly, but with different ways and paths. On this basis, the driving mechanism model of the above three main categories on the work safety management behavior in core enterprise supply chain is explored. Recently, the significance of organizational support and commitment in workplace safety has gained much recognition. The improvement of individual safety behavior needs more convincing and effective evidence. This study constructed a comprehensive theoretical model and used meta-analysis to examine the relationships between perceived organizational support for safety, organizational commitment and employee safety behavior. Support was found for the study's hypothesis that both perceived organizational support for safety and organizational commitment have a positive association with employee safety behavior, with the latter demonstrating the stronger relationship. However, organizational commitment was not mediated by perceived organizational support for safety and employee safety behavior. Results show that the safety behavior of employees in general industries and developed regions is more vulnerable to perceived organizational support for safety and organizational commitment than that in high-risk industries and developing regions. The implications of the findings and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Despite the documented relationship between active-approaching leadership behaviors and workplace safety, few studies have addressed whether and when passive-avoidant leadership affects safety behavior. This study examined the relationship between two types of safety-specific passive-avoidant leadership, i.e., safety-specific leader reward omission (SLRO) and safety-specific leader punishment omission (SLPO), and safety compliance, as well as the moderating effects of an individual difference (safety moral belief) and an organizational difference (organizational size) in these relationships. These predictions were tested on a sample of 704 steel workers in China. The results showed that, although both SLRO and SLPO are negatively related to safety compliance, SLPO demonstrated a greater effect than SLRO. Moreover, we found that steel workers with high levels of safety moral belief were more resistant to the negative effects of SLRO and SLPO on safety compliance. Although steel workers in large enterprises were more resistant to the negative effects of SLPO than those in small enterprises, the SLRO-compliance relationship is not contingent upon organizational size. The current study enriched the safety leadership literature by demonstrating the detrimental and relative effects of two types of safety-specific passive-avoidant leadership on safety compliance and by identifying two boundary conditions that can buffer these relationships among steel workers.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are emerging as promising biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Recognizing low-abundance EVs from clinical samples in an easy-to-operate way is highly desired but remains a challenge. Herein, we established an allosteric probe-initiated dual cycle amplification-assisted CRISPR-Cas12a (AID-Cas) platform for sensitive detection of EVs in a wash-free way. In AID-Cas, the allosteric probe can specifically recognize and bind with target EVs and thus initiate the following dual-cycle amplification. Subsequently, the amplified products were transcribed to generate numerous single-stranded RNAs, which could work as crRNA to trigger the trans-cleavage of CRISPR-Cas12a. Consequently, the proposed approach achieved a good linear response to extracted EVs in a concentration range from 10 2 to 10 6 particles/μL. Because of its high sensitivity, together with its wash-free convenience, the proposed strategy could have promising clinical potentials for early diagnosis of cancers.

Accurate identification of exosomes plays an essential role in facilitating disease diagnosis and therapies. Herein, we proposed an Aptamer-cholesterol-mediated Proximity Ligation Assay (AcmPLA) for accurate identification of exosomes in a dual-probe strategy, one aptamer probe for recognition of exosomal innate surface protein CD63 and another cholesterol probe for biolipid layer targeting. By integrating a proximity ligation of probes bound with exosomal biomarkers for specific recognition and a rolling circle amplification (RCA) strategy for signal amplification, we have successfully developed an exosomes-surface approach that can perform "AND" logic analysis of dual biomarkers, which not only could be used for exosomes quantification, but also for exosomes tracing. Besides RCA-initiated signal amplification, CD9 antibody-labeled magnetic beads were used to capture exosomes for isolation and secondary signal enrichment. Our approach can achieve specific exosomes isolation and accurate identification and thus could be exploited for broad applications in biological science, biomedical engineering, and personalized medicine.

Based on the characteristics of small-scale enterprises, the improvement of occupational health and safety management systems (OHS MS) needs an effective intervention. This study proposed a structural equation model and examined the relationships of perceived organization support for safety (POSS), person-organization safety fit (POSF) and proactivity safety behaviors with safety management, safety procedures and safety hazards identification. Data were collected from 503 employees of 105 Chinese high-risk small-scale enterprises over 6 months. The results showed that both POSS and POSF were positively related to improvement in safety management, safety procedures and safety hazards identification through proactivity safety behaviors. Our findings provide a new perspective on organizational safety for improving OHS MS for small-scale enterprises and extend the application of proactivity safety behaviors.

Numerous studies have shown that exosomes are closely related to the pathogenesis of various diseases, especially cancers. Therefore, a rapid and sensitive method for exosome detection will be of great importance for the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. We report here a method for exosome detection based on the CD63 aptamer and clustered regular interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas12a system. This method consists mainly of exosomal membrane protein recognition based on the CD63 aptamer and signal amplification based on CRISPR/Cas12a. The CD63 aptamer, as an easily adaptable nucleic acid strand, is responsible for the conversion of the amounts of exosomes into nucleic acid detection, whereas CRISPR/Cas12a is responsible for highly specific nucleic acid signal amplification. The detection range of the method was determined as 3 × 10 3 -6 × 10 7 particles per microliter. Additionally, we successfully applied this method to detect exosomes in clinical samples from both healthy individuals and patients with lung cancer, and the results were highly consistent with those obtained by nanoparticle tracking analysis. In general, this method provides a highly sensitive and specific method for the detection of exosomes and offers an avenue toward future exosome-based diagnosis of diseases.

Although the safety production level at small scale enterprises is important for business success, critical safety interactions among the enterprises, its employees, the public, and the government have not been explained well in the literature. To address this gap, a bottom-up method of agent-based modeling is applied here that includes these key stakeholders. The study illustrates how employee protection-oriented safety proactivity behaviors, including whistleblowing and public exposure, can impact the safety production level at small scale enterprises, which are also watched by the public and regulated by the government. The results confirm that protection-oriented safety proactivity behaviors have a significant impact on the safety production levels at small enterprises through the interactions among multiple agents. The model results are validated using an employee questionnaire. The recommendation is for employees to encourage protection-oriented safety proactivity behaviors to improve safety production levels and for the public and the government to provide additional safety support.

The OHS services of SMEs are still in their start-up stage in China. As such, there is an absence of mature market norms, which in turn makes it difficult to guarantee the quality of OHS services. The government, as the "night watchman" of the market, is supposed to not only involve itself in the regulation of OHS service quality, but also introduce and implement proper regulatory strategies. This paper employs a computational experiment approach to construct an experimental platform based on multiagent interactions. By simulating the OHS service transaction activities of SMEs, this paper takes the perspective of dynamic evolution. From this perspective, we probe into the optimal regulatory strategy covering the positive influence of government punishment, policy supports, and service quality ratings of the OHS services of SMEs. These strategies should be built on the foundation of proper punishment standard and intensity, proper support standard and intensity, and quality rating information disclosure.

Enhancing activated sludge dewaterability is of scientific and engineering importance in the face of accelerated urbanization and stringent environmental regulations. In this study, we investigated the integration of acidification and ultrasound (A/US) treatment for improving sludge dewaterability at both bench- and pilot-scales. Our results showed that the A/US process exhibited significantly improved sludge dewatering performance, characterized by capillary suction time, cake moisture, and water/solid content of sludge cake. Synergistic dewatering mechanisms were elucidated with a suite of macro and spectroscopic evidence. Characterization of treated sludge revealed that US-induced thermal, mechanical shearing force, and radical oxidation effects disrupts floc cells and accelerates the decomposition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), releasing bound water into the bulk phase. In addition to enhancing hydrolysis of EPS, the acidic pH environment caused the protonation of functional groups on EPS, facilitating the reflocculation of US decomposed sludge for improved filterability. Our bench-scale and pilot-scale investigations provide a mechanistic basis for better understanding of the A/US process, and enable development of a viable and economical dewatering technology.

This paper aims to promote a national and international occupational health and safety (OHS) intervention for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within internal and external resources. Based on the characteristics of small SME management, the work environment and occupational health may be positively affected by the dual-effects of employees and government. Evolutionary game theory is utilized to identify relevant interactions among the government, small enterprises, and employees. Furthermore, dynamic simulations of the evolutionary game model are used to explore stability strategies and to identify modes of equilibrium.

Bimetallic oxide CuFeO 2 as a new heterogeneous catalyst has shown much higher catalytic ability for activating peroxide than single-metal oxides. The present work demonstrated a synergistic microwave (MW) enhanced Fenton-like process with CuFeO 2 for rapid decolorization of azo dye Orange G (OG). The MW irradiation dramatically enhanced the OG degradation efficiency, achieving 99.9% decolorization within 15min at pH5. The XRD analysis of reused CuFeO 2 , together with metal leaching tests, indicated merits of recycling for CuFeO 2 . The subsequent surface element analysis by XPS for fresh and used CuFeO 2 showed a complex network for reactions between copper-iron redox pairs and surface hydroxyl groups, leading to a synergistic Fenton-like system accelerated by MW irradiation. In the CuFeO 2 initiated Fenton-like reactions, several oxidant species (i.e., OH, O 2 - , electron hole, and Fe IV O) responsible to the OG oxidation were identified by quenching experiments, showing the MW generated high temperature and "hot spots" enhanced the yield of OH by generation of electron-hole pairs. Further, the 26 detected degradation products confirmed the OH dominant oxidation of OG. A planar graphene oxide-based magnetic ionic liquid nanomaterial (PGO-MILN) was synthesized. The prepared PGO-MILN was characterized by transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The results of adsorption experiments showed that the PGO-MILN had great adsorption capacity for 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol (2,3,4,6-TeCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Based on the adsorption experimental data, a sensitive magnetic method for determination of the five CPs in environmental water samples was developed by an effective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) procedure coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The effects of main MSPE parameters including the solution pH, extraction time, desorption time, and volume of desorption solution on the extraction efficiencies had been investigated in detail. The recoveries ranged from 85.3 to 99.3% with correlation coefficients (r) higher than 0.9994 and the linear ranges were between 10 and 500ngL(-1). The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) of the five CPs ranged from 0.2 to 2.6ngL(-1) and 0.6 to 8.7ngL(-1), respectively. The intra- and inter- day relative standard deviations (RSDs) were in the range from 0.6% to 7.4% and from 0.7% to 8.4%, respectively. A new facile, rapid, inexpensive, and sensitive method for the analysis of six trace trichlorophenols in seawater samples was developed by magnetic micro-solid-phase extraction coupled to liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Core-shell covalently functionalized ferroferric oxide coated with aminated silicon dioxide and decorated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes was applied as an adsorbent to perform the extraction process. The effect of factors including solution pH, contact time, adsorbent amount, and ionic strength were investigated in detail. The obtained results revealed that the proposed adsorbent was a highly effective and low-cost magnetic micro-solid-phase extraction material for the enrichment of 2,3,4-trichlorophenol, 2,3,5-trichlorophenol, 2,3,6-trichlorophenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, and 3,4,5-trichlorophenol from seawater. Under the optimized conditions, the recoveries ranged from 88.0 to 99.5% at the three spiking levels, the limits of detection and the limits of quantification were 0.002 and 0.007 μg/L for the six trichlorophenols, respectively. The intra- and interday relative standard deviations were 2.0-6.7 and 4.5-8.9%, respectively. The calibration curves showed a good linearity in the range of 0.02-5.0 μg/L. In this study, graphene oxide-encapsulated core-shell magnetic microspheres (GOE-CS-MM) were fabricated by a self-assemble approach between positive charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride (PDDA)-modified Fe3O4@SiO2 and negative charged GO sheets via electrostatic interaction. The as-prepared GOE-CS-MM was carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer analysis (VSM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and was used as a cleanup adsorbent in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for determination of 15 trace-level environmental phenols in seafood coupled to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The obtained results showed that the GOE-CS-MM exhibited excellent cleanup efficiency and could availably reduce the matrix effect. The cleanup mechanisms were investigated and referred to π-π stacking interaction and hydrogen bond between GOE-CS-MM and impurities in the extracts. Moreover, the extraction and cleanup conditions of GOE-CS-MM toward phenols were optimized in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) were found to be 0.003-0.06 μg kg(-1), and satisfactory recovery values of 84.8-103.1% were obtained for the tested seafood samples. Microcystins (MCs), a group of cyclic heptapeptide heaptoxins and tumor promoters, are generated by cyanobacteria occurring in surface waters, such as eutrophic lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. In this present study, a novel double-sided magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer modified graphene oxide (DS-MMIP@GO) based magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method was developed for fast, effective and selective enrichment, and recognition of trace MCs in environmental water samples combined with high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The synthesized novel DS-MMIP@GO was used as the adsorbents in this work and was carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectra. The adsorption and desorption conditions of DS-MMIP@GO toward MCs were optimized in detail to obtain the highest binding capacity, selectivity, and release efficiency. Under the optimum conditions, the enrichment factors of the method for eight target MCs were found to be 2000. The limits of quantitation (LOQs) of the method for eight MCs were in range of 0.1-2.0ngL(-1). The double-sided MMIP modified structure provided DS-MMIP@GO with abundant adsorption sites and permitted it to exhibit excellent enrichment and selectivity toward trace-level MCs. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of environmental water samples with recoveries ranging from 84.1 to 98.2%. In this work, the decolorization of azo dye Orange G (OG) in aqueous solution by aluminum powder enhanced by ultrasonic irradiation (AlP-UI) was investigated. The effects of various operating operational parameters such as the initial pH, initial OG concentration, AlP dosage, ultrasound power and added hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration were studied. The results showed that the decolorization rate was enhanced when the aqueous OG was irradiated simultaneously by ultrasound in the AlP-acid systems. The decolorization rate decreased with the increase of both initial pH values of 2.0-4.0 and OG initial concentrations of 10-80mg/L, increased with the ultrasound power enhancing from 500 to 900W. An optimum value was reached at 2.0g/L of the AlP dosage in the range of 0.5-2.5g/L. The decolorization rate enhanced significantly by the addition of hydrogen peroxide in the range of 10-100mM to AlP-UI system reached an optimum value of 0.1491min(-1). The decolorization of OG appears to involve primarily oxidative steps, the cleavage of NN bond, which were verificated by the intermediate products of OG under the optimal tested degradation system, aniline and 1-amino-2-naphthol-6,8-disulfonate detected by the LC-MS., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The interlinked fish scales of Atractosteus spatula (alligator gar) and Polypterus senegalus (gray and albino bichir) are effective multilayered armor systems for protecting fish from threats such as aggressive conspecific interactions or predation. Both types of fish scales have multi-layered structures with a harder and stiffer outer layer, and softer and more compliant inner layers. However, there are differences in relative layer thickness, property mismatch between layers, the property gradations and nanostructures in each layer. The fracture paths and patterns of both scales under microindentation loads were different. In this work, finite element models of fish scales of A. spatula and P. senegalus were built to investigate the mechanics of their multi-layered structures under penetration loads. The models simulate a rigid microindenter penetrating the fish scales quasi-statically to understand the observed experimental results. Study results indicate that the different fracture patterns and crack paths observed in the experiments were related to the different stress fields caused by the differences in layer thickness, and spatial distribution of the elastic and plastic properties in the layers, and the differences in interface properties. The parametric studies and experimental results suggest that smaller fish such as P. senegalus may have adopted a thinner outer layer for light-weighting and improved mobility, and meanwhile adopted higher strength and higher modulus at the outer layer, and stronger interface properties to prevent ring cracking and interface cracking, and larger fish such as A. spatula and Arapaima gigas have lower strength and lower modulus at the outer layers and weaker interface properties, but have adopted thicker outer layers to provide adequate protection against ring cracking and interface cracking, possibly because weight is less of a concern relative to the smaller fish such as P. senegalus., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been known to play a pivotal role in the age- and/or disease-related degradation of intervertebral discs. We aimed to explore as to whether the expression of these enzymes is correlated to disc degeneration caused by increasing age and severity of herniation in the East Asian population. Thus, we studied the expressions of MMP-1 (collagenase), MMP-2 (gelatinase) and MMP-14 (membrane-type protease) in 65 patients diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to their age, and the severity of herniation was graded on the basis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Immunohistochemistry analysis was conducted to determine the expression of different MMPs in the post-surgery disc specimens. The results showed that expressions of these three enzymes were directly and positively related to the degree of disc degradation. Whereas, the MMP-1 expression was found to be elevated with the increasing age, the MMP-2 and MMP-14 remained unchanged in groups of different ages. A direct correlation between the expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-14 suggested a role of MMP-14 in the modulation of MMP-2 expression.

A novel planar-structure amine-functional magnetic polymer modified graphene oxide nanocomposite (NH2-MP@GO) was synthesized. The properties were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The obtained adsorption results showed that the NH2-MP@GO had great adsorptive ability toward five chlorophenols (CPs), including 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP), 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol (2,3,4,6-TeCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP). Based on these, an effective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) procedure coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the preconcentration and determination of the five CPs in environmental water samples was developed. Various experimental parameters that could affect the extraction efficiencies had been investigated in detail. Under the optimum conditions, the enrichment factors of the method for the target CPs were found to be 1000. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of environmental water samples with recoveries ranging from 86.4 to 99.8% with correlation coefficients (R) higher than 0.9994. Good linearities were obtained ranging from 10 to 500ng/L for 2-CP, 5 to 500ng/L for 2,4-DCP, 2 to 500ng/L for 2,4,6-TeCP and 2,3,4,6-TeCP, and 1 to 500ng/L for PCP, respectively. The limits of quantitation for the five CPs were 0.6-9.2ng/L. A novel amphiphilic polymeric ionic liquid membrane containing a hydrophilic bromide anion and a hydrophobic carbonyl group was synthesized in dimethylformamide (DMF) systems using the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide (BVImBr) and the methylmethacrylate (MMA) as monomers. The prepared amphiphilic ploy-methylmethacrylate-1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide (MMA-BVImBr) was characterized by a scanning electron microscope and an infrared spectrum instrument. The results of solid-phase micro-extraction membrane (SPMM) experiments showed that the adsorption capacity of membrane was about 0.76μgμg(-1) for aniline. Based on this, a sensitive method for the determination of trace aniline, as a degradation product of azo dye Orange G under sonication, was developed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The calibration curve showed a good linearity ranging from 0.5 to 10.0μgL(-1) with a correlation coefficient value of 0.9998. The limit of quantification was 0.5μgL(-1). The recoveries ranged from 90.6% to 96.1%. The intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations were less than 8.3% and 10.9%. Osteosarcoma typically arises in tissues of mesenchymal origin, and is the most malignant bone tumor characterized by high local aggressiveness, with poor therapeutic outcome. Busulfan has been widely used to treat CML. So far, there are no reports on the therapeutic effect of busulfan on osteosarcoma. Here, we showed that busulfan dose-dependently reduced the cell viability and proliferation, and induced cell apoptosis, senescence, and reactive oxygen species levels in two osteosarcoma cell lines. Moreover, a series of loss-of-function and gain-of-function experiments further indicated that busulfan may have its anti-osteosarcoma effect by upregulating the microRNA-200 (miR-200) family which subsequently downregulated its target genes ZEB1 and ZEB2. Furthermore, treatment with busulfan potentially inhibited the growth of implanted osteosarcoma in nude mice. Taken together, our data suggest that busulfan may have an anti-osteosarcoma effect through downregulating ZEB1 and ZEB2 through activating the miR-200 family, highlighting a possibility of using busulfan as a novel therapy for osteosarcoma., (© 2014 The Authors. The authors studied the nuclear magnetic resonance films and the expression of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 in disk specimens' of patients who had undergone operations for lumbar disk herniation. Forty-one lumbar disk patients were evaluated imaging for degenerative changes and their disk specimens immunohistochemical expression of MMP-1 and TIMP-1. The degree of degenerative changes was based on magnetic resonance imaging films. Sections of disk immunostained for MMP-1 and TIMP-1 were evaluated semiquantitatively. Patients were categorized in three age groups: <30 years, from 30 to 60 years, and >60 years of age. The expressions of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 were related to patients' age and degree of degenerative changes. There were statistical differences in the expression of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 between the age and degree of degenerative changes groups. With the degree of degenerative changes, the expression of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 increased obviously. But in old age group, the expression of MMP-1/TIMP-1 was higher than the young groups. The expressions of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 were strongly correlated to the age and the degree of the degenerative changes. An important finding in this study is the unbalance of the expression of MMP-1 and TIMP-1 along with the growth of the age.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy to arise from bone. The pathogenesis of osteosarcoma is unclear, and new therapy molecular target is needed. The miRNAs researched suggested that miRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis of osteosarcoma. MiR-141, which belong to miR-200 family, take a part in tumorigenesis. However, the role of miR-141 in the pathogenesis of osteosarcoma remained unclear. In this study, we focused on the miR-141 in osteosarcoma and found that the expression of miR-141 is lower in osteosarcoma. Overexpression of miR-141 not only inhibits osteosarcoma cell proliferation but also induces cell apoptosis. It is estimated that miR-141 played its role via ZEB1 and ZEB2. In all, miR-141 played a osteosarcoma-suppressing role via ZEB1 and ZEB2. Our finding may elucidate the miRNAs mechanism in osteosarcoma and provide a new molecule target for osteosarcoma therapy.

Osteosarcoma is the 3rd most common human cancer in childhood and young adults, and is the leading cause of mortality. Recent studies suggest that miRNAs could regulate the growth and progression of osteosarcoma, indicating some novel targets for therapy. In our study, we demonstrated that miR-451 was down-regulated in human osteosarcoma U2OS, SAOS, and MG63 cells lines as well as in tumor tissue surgically resected compared with the normal tissues. Overexpression of miR-451 inhibited cell proliferation and resulted in cell apoptosis in osteosarcoma cells. G1 cell cycle arrest was also induced by miR-451. Repressed by miR-451, PGE2 and CCND1 reversed the inhibitory effects of miR-451 on proliferation. In conclusion, miR-451 played a tumor-suppressing role through modulating the expression of PGE2 and CCND1, suggesting a novel target for the diagnosis and treatment of osteosarcoma.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive technique used to treat liver tumors. The current study presents the case of a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma who suffered from post-operative pericardial effusion following RFA treatment. We hypothesize that RFA thermal conduction may damage the diaphragm and pericardium, leading to local edema in the pericardium. RFA is a minimally invasive technique, however, adequate preparatory work must be performed prior to surgery, including a comprehensive assessment of the patient. During surgery, the location and extent of the region to receive RFA must be determined precisely in order to reduce the range of damage and to avoid post-operative complications. This study describes a case of pericardial effusion caused by RFA of liver cancer. We analyzed the causes and preventive measures for pericardial effusion in order to contribute to the prevention pericardial effusion that is complicated by RFA of liver cancer.

Aimed at cost saving and pollution reduction, a novel desulfurization wastewater evaporation treatment system (DWETS) for handling wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) wastewater of a coal-fired power plant was studied. The system's advantages include simple process, and less investment and space. The feasibility of this system has been proven and the appropriate position and number of nozzles, the spray droplet size and flue gas temperature limitation have been obtained by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The simulation results show that a longer duct, smaller diameter and higher flue gas temperature could help to increase the evaporation rate. The optimal DWETS design of Shangdu plant is 100 μm droplet sprayed by two nozzles located at the long duct when the flue gas temperature is 130 °C. Field tests were carried out based on the simulation results. The effects of running DWETS on the downstream devices have been studied. The results show that DWETS has a positive impact on ash removal efficiency and does not have any negative impact on the electrostatic precipitator (ESP), flue gas heat exchanger and WFGD. The pH values of the slurry of WFGD slightly increase when the DWETS is running. The simulation and field test of the DWETS show that it is a feasible future technology for desulfurization wastewater treatment.

The proline-rich coiled coil 2B (prrc2b) is a conservative gene which is found in the genomes of most vertebrates. However, its function and expression pattern remains unknown. This study describes the spatio-temporal expression patterns of the PRRC2B protein in the rat brain with a view to inferring its function. The expression of PRRC2B protein was determined at embryonic day 18 (E18), postnatal day 1 (P1), postnatal day 7 (P7), postnatal day 15 (P15) and adulthood rats by Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining. Western blot results showed that the PRRC2B highly expressed in the whole brain tissues at E18, P1 and P7 but lowly expressed at P15 and adulthood. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the PRRC2B was located in the plasma and neurites of neurons with big size. The PRRC2B positive neurons widely distributed in most brain regions, including olfactory bulb, cerebral cortex, cerebellar cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, superior colliculus, inferior colliculus, midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata, etc. Interestingly, there were obvious morphological differences between positive neurons in mature and immature rat brains. At P1 and P7 the protein highly expressed in the neuronic plasma, especially in the prominences and branches; while at P15 and adulthood, it only weakly expressed in the plasma. Above findings comprehensively revealed the expression pattern of PRRC2B protein in the whole rat brain at various stages for the first time, which should benefit to explore its function.

Tempo spatially specific expression of many development-related genes is the molecular basis for the formation of the central nervous system (CNS), especially those genes regulating the proliferation, differentiation, migration, axon growth, and orientation of nerve cells. The development-related genes are usually prominent during the embryonic and newborn stages, but rarely express during the adulthood. These genes are believed to be suitable target genes for promoting CNS regeneration, despite majority of which remains unknown. Hence, the aim of this study was to screen development-related genes which might contribute to CNS regeneration. In this study, 1,033 differentially-expressed genes of superior colliculus in the courses of mouse optic nerve development and injury, as previously identified by cDNA microarrays, were hierarchically clustered to display expression pattern of each gene and reveal the relationships among these genes, and infer the functions of some unknown genes based on function-identified genes with the similar expression patterns. Consequently, the expression patterns of 1,033 candidate genes were revealed at eight time points during optic nerve development or injury. According to the similarity among gene expression patterns, 1,033 genes were divided into seven groups. The potential function of genes in each group was inferred on the basis of the dynamic trend for mean gene expression values. Moreover, the expression patterns of six function-unidentified genes were extremely similar to that of the ptn gene which could promote and guide axonal extension. Therefore, these six genes are temporally regarded as candidate genes related to axon growth and guidance. The results may help to better understand the roles of function-identified genes in the stages of CNS development and injury, and offer useful clues to evaluate the functions of hundreds of unidentified genes.

Alcohol soluble fullerene derivative (FN-C60) has been synthesized and used as a cathode interfacial layer for high-efficiency polymer solar cells (PSCs). To examine the function of the FN-C60 interfacial layer, polymer solar cells were fabricated with blends of P3:PC71BM, HXS-1:PC71BM, PDFCDTBT:PC71BM, and PDPQTBT:PC71BM as the active layer. In comparison to the bare Al electrode, power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of P3:PC71BM, HXS-1:PC71BM, PDFCDTBT:PC71BM, and PDPQTBT:PC71BM based PSCs were increased from 3.50 to 4.64%, 4.69 to 5.25%, 2.70 to 4.60%, and 1.52 to 2.29%, respectively, when FN-C60/Al was used as the electrode. Moreover, the overall photovoltaic performances of PSCs with the FN-C60/Al electrode were better than those of cells with LiF/Al electrode, indicating that FN-C60 is a potential interfacial layer material to replace LiF.

The synthesis, characterization, and photophysical and photovoltaic properties of two anthracene-containing wide-band-gap donor and acceptor (D-A) alternating conjugated polymers (P1 and P2) are described. These two polymers absorb in the range of 300-600 nm with a band gap of about 2.12 eV. Polymer solar cells with P1:PC71 BM as the active layer demonstrate a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.23% with a high Voc of 0.96 V, a Jsc of 4.4 mA cm(-2) , and a comparable fill factor (FF) of 0.53 under simulated solar illumination of AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm(-2) ). In addition, P2:PC71 BM blend-based solar cells exhibit a PCE of 1.42% with a comparable Voc of 0.89 V, a Jsc of 3.0 mA cm(-2) , and an FF of 0.53., (Copyright © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Objective: To explore the associations between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms (including Fok I, Bsm I and Apa I) and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal Asian women., Study Design: Databases of Medline, Embase and Wangfang were retrieved to identify eligible studies, with update to 1st February 2012. Standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated by using fixed- or random-effect model. Best genetic comparison model was determined by using the Thakkinstian method., Results: A total of 14 studies with 3243 healthy postmenopausal Asian women were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, pooled analyses indicated that the f allele of VDR Fok I was significantly associated with decreased BMD in the lumbar spine (ff vs. FF: SMD (95% CI): -0.87 (-1.38, -0.35); P=0.001 for lumbar spine; -0.43 (-0.93, 0.06), P=0.086 for femoral neck). In contrast, we did not observe overall associations between VDR Bsm I and Apa I polymorphisms and BMD in either lumbar spine or femoral neck (Bsm I bb vs. BB: SMD (95% CI): 0.61 (-1.30, 2.53), P=0.531 for lumbar spine; Apa I aa vs. AA: SMD (95% CI): 0.66 (-0.16, 1.48), P=0.113 for lumbar spine). When subgroup analyses were conducted according to countries, Indians carrying the VDR Fok I ff genotype were at risk of low BMD at lumbar spine (ff vs. FF: SMD (95% CI): -0.57 (-0.85, -0.29), P<0.001). Sensitivity analyses indicated that no single study had substantial influence on all combined analyses. In addition, no publication bias was identified., Conclusions: This meta-analysis indicated that VDR Fok I, rather than Bsm I and Apa I polymorphisms, is associated with bone mineral density in postmenopausal Asian women (especially for Indian women), and can probably be used with other genetic markers together to identify individuals at high risk of osteoporosis., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Background: MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism is a genetic alteration in an enzyme involved in folate metabolism, but its effect on host susceptibility to cervical cancer is still uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism and cervical cancer by performing a meta-analysis., Methods: Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM) databases were searched for case-control studies investigating the association between MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism and cervical cancer. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were used to assess this possible association., Results: 11 studies with a total of 1898 cervical cancer cases and 2678 controls were included. Meta-analyses of a total 11 studies showed no association between MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism and cervical cancer using all five genetic models (All P values>0.05). However, subgroup analyses showed the odds of the homozygous TT genotype were much less in cervical cancer cases than in controls in Europeans, which implied an association between the homozygous TT genotype and cervical cancer in Europeans (For TT versus CC, fixed-effects OR=0.65, 95%CI 0.45-0.93, P=0.020, I2=0.0%). The odds for the homozygous TT genotype were greater in cervical cancer cases than in controls in East Asians, which also implied an association between the homozygous TT genotype and cervical cancer in East Asians (For TT versus CC, random-effects OR=1.66, 95%CI 1.05-2.62, P=0.029, I2=52.6%; For TT versus CT/CC, random-effects OR=1.55, 95%CI 1.09-2.22, P=0.016, I2=42.4%). Both subgroup analyses and meta-regression analyses suggested ethnicity was the major source of heterogeneity. Publication bias was not evident., Conclusions: This meta-analysis supports an association between MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism and cervical cancer, and the effect of this association may be race specific. Further studies with large sample sizes and careful design are needed to identify this association more comprehensively.

Studies investigating the association between cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1) Asn453Ser (453 A/G, rs1800440) polymorphism and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk report conflicting results. The aim of this study was to quantitatively summarize the evidence for such a relationship. Two investigators independently searched the Medline and Embase Databases. Summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for CYP1B1 polymorphism and CRC were calculated in a fixed-effects model (the Mantel-Haenszel method) and a random-effects model (the DerSimonian and Laird method) when appropriate. The pooled ORs were performed for co-dominant model (GG vs AA, GA vs AA), dominant model (GG+GA vs AA), and recessive model (GG vs GA+AA). This meta-analysis included 7 case-control studies, which included 6375 CRC cases and 7003 controls. Overall, the variant genotypes (GG and GA) of the 453 A/G were not associated with CRC risk when compared with the wild-type AA homozygote (GG vs AA, OR=0.94, 95% CI=0.77-1.14; GA vs AA, OR=0.99, 95% CI=0.87-1.12). Similarly, no associations were found in the dominant and recessive models (dominant model, OR=0.98, 95% CI=0.87-1.09; recessive model, OR=0.94, 95% CI=0.77-1.14). When stratifying for country, study sample size, matched control and source of controls, no evidence of significant association was observed in any subgroup, except among those studies from "Canada". Cyclophilin A (CyPA) is a peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase originally identified as the target of the immunosuppressive drug cyclosporine A. A number of reports have demonstrated that CyPA plays a critical role in the successful replication of viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), etc. However, recent studies demonstrated that CyPA also possesses a repressive effect on the replication of some viruses like Influenza A virus and rotavirus. Polymorphisms in genes involved in folate metabolism may modulate the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), but data from published studies are conflicting. The current meta-analysis was performed to address a more accurate estimation. A total of 41 (17,552 cases and 26,238 controls), 24(8,263 cases and 12,033 controls), 12(3,758 cases and 5,646 controls), and 13 (5,511 cases and 7,265 controls) studies were finally included for the association between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T and A1289C, methione synthase reductase (MTRR) A66G, methionine synthase (MTR) A2756G polymorphisms and the risk of CRC, respectively. The data showed that the MTHFR 677T allele was significantly associated with reduced risk of CRC (OR = 0.93, 95%CI 0.90-0.96), while the MTRR 66G allele was significantly associated with increased risk of CRC (OR = 1.11, 95%CI 1.01-1.18). Sub-group analysis by ethnicity revealed that MTHFR C677T polymorphism was significantly associated with reduced risk of CRC in Asians (OR = 0.80, 95%CI 0.72-0.89) and Caucasians (OR = 0.84, 95%CI 0.76-0.93) in recessive genetic model, while the MTRR 66GG genotype was found to significantly increase the risk of CRC in Caucasians (GG vs. AA: OR = 1.18, 95%CI 1.03-1.36). No significant association was found between MTHFR A1298C and MTR A2756G polymorphisms and the risk of CRC. Cumulative meta-analysis showed no particular time trend existed in the summary estimate. Probability of publication bias was low across all comparisons illustrated by the funnel plots and Egger's test. Collectively, this meta-analysis suggested that MTHFR 677T allele might provide protection against CRC in worldwide populations, while MTRR 66G allele might increase the risk of CRC in Caucasians. Since potential confounders could not be ruled out completely, further studies were needed to confirm these results.

The effect of La on Al/NaBH(4) hydrolysis was elaborated in the present paper. Hydrogen generation amount increases but hydrogen generation rate decreases with La content increasing. There is an optimized composition that Al-15 wt% La-5 wt% NiCl(2)/NaBH(4) mixture (Al-15 wt% La-5 wt% NiCl(2)/NaBH(4) weight ratio, 1 : 3) has 126 mL g(-1 )min(-1) maximum hydrogen generation rate and 1764 mL g(-1) hydrogen generation amount within 60 min. The efficiency is 88%. Combined with NiCl(2), La has great effect on NaBH(4) hydrolysis but has little effect on Al hydrolysis. Increasing La content is helpful to decrease the particle size of Al-La-NiCl(2) in the milling process, which induces that the hydrolysis byproduct Ni(2)B is highly distributed into Al(OH)(3) and the catalytic reactivity of Ni(2)B/Al(OH)(3) is increased therefore. But hydrolysis byproduct La(OH)(3) deposits on Al surface and leads to some side effect. The Al-La-NiCl(2)/NaBH(4) mixture has good stability in low temperature and its hydrolytic performance can be improved with increasing global temperature. Therefore, the mixture has good safety and can be applied as on board hydrogen generation material.

Background: A series of studies have been conducted to evaluate the associations between vitamin D receptor (VDR) and aggrecan variable numbers of tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphisms and the risk of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), but produced conflicting results., Objective: we performed a meta-analysis to address a more accurate estimation of the associations between the above gene polymorphisms and the risk of IDD., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify all the relevant studies. The fixed or random effect model was selected based on the heterogeneity test among studies evaluated using the I(2). Publication bias was estimated using Begg's funnel plots and Egger's regression test., Results: A total of 9, 5, 3, and 7 studies were finally included in the analyses for the associations between the VDR TaqI (rs731236), FokI (rs2228570), ApaI (rs7975232), or aggrecan VNTR polymorphisms and the risk of IDD, respectively. The combined results showed that none of the VDR (TaqI, FokI, ApaI) polymorphisms were significantly associated with the risk of IDD. In contrast, the alleles with shorter VNTR length was found to significantly increase the risk of IDD (≦25 vs. >25: OR = 1.850, 95%CI 1.477-2.318; ≦23 vs. >23: OR = 1.955, 95%CI 1.41-2.703). Subgroup analysis confirmed the above results. After excluding studies deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) in controls, no other studies were found to significantly influence the pooled effects in each genetic model. No potential publication bias was detected., Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested that the alleles with shorter VNTR length significantly increased the risk of IDD, while the VDR (TaqI, FokI, ApaI) gene polymorphisms were not significantly associated with the risk of IDD. Since potential confounders could not be ruled out completely, further studies are needed to confirm these results.
