Introduction: Estimating the serum vancomycin (VCM) concentrations of lean and patients with obesity is challenging. Additionally, VCM dosing for Japanese patients undergoing hemodialysis remains particularly unclear. This study aimed to determine the impact of the physical build on serum VCM concentrations of Japanese patients undergoing hemodialysis., Methods: This retrospective cohort study included hospitalized patients undergoing hemodialysis, who received treatment with VCM between May 1, 2019, and December 31, 2021, at Kansai Rosai Hospital, which is a 642-bed acute care hospital in Japan. Patients were divided into the following three groups based on their body mass index (BMI): lean group (≤18.5 kg/m 2 ), normal group (18.5-25 kg/m 2 ), and obese group (≥25 kg/m 2 ). The VCM dose and predialysis serum VCM concentration (PVC) were compared., Results: This study included 191 patients. There were 50 patients in the lean group, 85 in the normal group, and 56 in the obese group. The median loading doses per body weight were 24.0, 22.1, and 21.2 mg/kg for the lean, normal, and obese groups, respectively. The VCM dose per body weight decreased significantly with increasing BMI. The median PVCs of the lean and normal groups were approximately 15 mg/L (not significantly different). Mus minutoides is one of the smallest mammals worldwide; however, the regulatory mechanisms underlying its dwarfism have not been examined. Therefore, we aimed to establish M. minutoides induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) using the PiggyBac transposon system for applications in developmental engineering. The established M. minutoides iPSCs were found to express pluripotency markers and could differentiate into neurons. Based on in vitro differentiation analysis, M. minutoides iPSCs formed embryoid bodies expressing marker genes in all three germ layers. Moreover, according to the in vivo analysis, these cells contributed to the formation of teratoma and development of chimeric mice with Mus musculus. Overall, the M. minutoides iPSCs generated in this study possess properties that are comparable to or closely resemble those of naïve pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). Mouse embryos in the early-implantation stage require manipulation under a microscope. While the extraction of DNA, RNA and proteins from a single sample allows for both determination of genetic type and analysis of gene expression, whole mount analysis is not possible. In this study, we explored the applicability of PCR using extraembryonic tissues, especially the decidual side tissue after isolating the embryos from implantation sites to establish a method for determining the genetic type of embryos. The implantation site was resected at each day from the date of vaginal plug confirmation, separated into embryos and deciduae. Genomic DNA were isolated separately from the embryos and the deciduae. PCR was performed using these genomic DNA, and the band patterns were compared after electrophoresis. As a result, we demonstrated that detecting embryo-derived cells in the decidua allows determination of the sex and presence of transgenes without harming the mouse embryos themselves, from 8.5 days of age. This method enables the determination of the genetic type of mouse embryos without damaging. The African pygmy mouse ( Mus minutoides ) displays a dwarfism phenotype distinctive from closely related species. This study aimed to investigate the growth hormone receptor (Ghr) gene sequence in M. minutoides . We identified several amino acid variations, including the P469L mutation. Our findings suggest that this mutation affects Ghr protein functionality, decreasing Igf1 expression and contributing to the dwarfism observed in M. minutoides . Background: Facet cysts in the subaxial cervical spine are a relatively rare cause of neuropathy. This case series aimed to investigate the radiological and histopathological features and surgical results of these lesions, and provide possible mechanisms of cyst development., Methods: Thirteen subaxial cervical facet cysts in 12 patients were diagnosed on the basis of magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography with facet arthrography. Surgical outcomes were evaluated according to the Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores for cervical myelopathy, or Tanaka's scores for cervical radiculopathy. These results were presented in combination with a scoping review of the literature., Results: Seven cysts were found in the posteromedial region, and six in the posterolateral portion of the spinal canal. Computed tomography revealed degeneration of all involved facet joints. All patients underwent decompression, and the mean recovery rates of Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores and Tanaka's scores were 57.1% and 87.5%, respectively. Histopathologically, all cysts were continuous with the degenerated ligamentum flavum. In the scoping review, the patients' mean age was 65.1 years. The cysts were distributed as follows: 3.6% at C2-3, 10.7% at C3-4, 14.3% at C4-5, 5.4% at C5-6, 7.1% at C6-7, and 58.9% at C7-T1. The presenting symptoms were myelopathy (49.4%) and radiculopathy (50.0%). Radiologically, 55% and 45% of the cysts were of the posteromedial and posterolateral types. Of the patients, 76.9% underwent decompression only, and 23.1% had concomitant fusion. Cyst recurrence was not observed in the mean follow-up period of 15.1 months., Conclusions: The pathogenesis of cysts is closely related to degenerative changes in the facet joint and ligamentum flavum, and rupture in degenerated ligaments can develop into a cavity, which contributes to cyst formation. Background: Recently, the prevalence of elderly patients suffering from cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) without bone injury has been increasing in various countries. Pre-existing factors causing spinal cord compression, such as ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), can increase the risk of CSCI without bone injury. However, no study has compared the prevalence of pre-existing factors between CSCI with and without bone injury. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of pre-existing factors between CSCI with and without bone injury., Methods: In 168 consecutive patients with CSCI, pre-existing factors including OPLL, posterior spur of the vertebral body, developmental stenosis, disc bulge and calcification of yellow ligament (CYL) were evaluated on imaging studies. The prevalence of each type of pre-existing factors was compared between patients with and without bone injury., Results: The prevalence of pre-existing factors in patients without bone injury (86%) was significantly higher than in those with bone injury (20%) (P < 0.001; odds ratio, 23.9). The most common pre-existing factor was OPLL followed by developmental stenosis, posterior spur, disc bulge and CYL in both groups. OPLL, development stenosis and posterior spur were significantly more common in patients without bone injury compared to those with bone injury (P < 0.01)., Conclusions: Prevalence of pre-existing factors, such as OPLL, development stenosis and posterior spur was significantly higher in patients without bone injury than in those with bone injury. Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutation in the Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (SBDS) gene that has a variety of clinical features, including exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and hematological dysfunction. The SBDS protein is considered to be involved in ribosome biogenesis, ribosomal RNA metabolism, stabilization of mitotic spindles and cellular stress responses, yet the function of SBDS in detail is still incompletely understood. The multiple functions imply that certain proteins might associate with SBDS and affect its function. In this study, we identified Ring finger protein 2 (RNF2) as a candidate for the SBDS interactor by yeast two-hybrid screening. Moreover, we confirmed the interaction by GST-pull down assay using recombinant proteins and co-immunoprecipitation in HEK293T cells overexpressing RNF2. In addition, it is shown that RNF2 ubiquitinates SBDS and promotes its proteasomal degradation in HEK293T cells. We determined the nucleotide sequence of the growth hormone (Gh) gene in Mus minutoides, one of the smallest mammals, where was predicted to be distinct in the functional regions between M. minutoides and Mus musculus. To investigate the evolutionary characteristics of Gh in M. minutoides, we constructed a phylogenetic tree based on the putative amino acid sequences of Gh, suggesting that the Gh of M. minutoides diverged earlier than M. musculus. Furthermore, the Gh gene expressed higher in M. minutoides than in M. musculus. Our results suggest that the specific feature of the Gh in M. minutoides is in rather the regulatory mechanism than the sequence.

Two types of synthetic carbonate apatite [potassium-containing carbonate apatite (CAK) and sodium-containing carbonate apatite (CANa)] were prepared and characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The chemical formulas of carbonate apatite were determined to be Ca 9.36 K 0.12 (PO 4 ) 5.12 (CO 3 ) 0.88 (OH) 1.73 and Ca 8.72 Na 1.33 (PO 4 ) 4.96 (CO 3 ) 1.04 (OH) 1.80 , respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the final weight loss at 1,200°C reached about 11.2% for CAK and 13.9% for CANa. Carbonate loss gradually occurred above 150°C and continued to 1,200°C. The crystallinity of the apatite phase was found to be much improved between 800 and 850°C for CAK and 750 and 800°C for CANa, where rapid carbonate loss occurred. A small amount of CaO formed above 900°C. For CANa, NaCaPO 4 also formed above 700°C in both apatites. Although the lattice parameters of the carbonate apatites varied with temperature, the final a and c lattice parameters attained constant values of 0.9421 and 0.6881 nm.

Biphasic calcium phosphate consisting of hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-tricalcium phosphate(β-TCP) is an excellent bone substitute with controllable bioresorbability. Fabrication of biphasic calcium phosphate with self-setting ability is expected to enhance its potential application as bone substitute. In this study, mixtures of α-TCP and β-TCP with various compositions were prepared through α-β phase transition of α-TCP powder at 1000°C for various periods. These powders were mixed with 0.25M Na 2 HPO 4 at a P/L ratio of 2, and then hardened at 37°C at 100% RH for up to 24h. Material properties of biphasic HA/β-TCP cement with different α-TCP/β-TCP composition were characterized. These cements were also evaluated with respect to cell response in vitro using MC3T3-E1 cell lines. In conclusion, mechanical and biological properties of HA/β-TCP cement could be controlled by changing the heat treatment time of α-TCP powder at 1000°C. Appropriate setting time is an important parameter that determines the effectiveness of apatite cement (AC) for clinical application, given the issues of crystalline inflammatory response phenomena if AC fails to set. To this end, the present study analyzes the effects of the method of apatite seed crystals addition on the setting reaction of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) based AC. Two ACs, both consisting of α-TCP and calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (cdHAp), were analyzed in this study. In one AC, cdHAp was added externally to α-TCP and this AC was abbreviated as AC(EA). In the other AC, α-TCP was partially hydrolyzed to form cdHAp on the surface of α-TCP. This AC was referred to as AC(PH). Results indicate a decrease in the setting time of both ACs with the addition of cdHAp. Among them, for the given amount of added cdHAp, AC(PH) showed relatively shorter setting time than AC(EA). Besides, the mechanical strength of the set AC(PH) was also higher than that of set AC(EA). These properties of AC(PH) were attributed to the predominant crystal growth of cdHAp in the vicinity of the α-TCP particle surface. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the partial hydrolysis of α-TCP may be a better approach to add low crystalline cdHAp onto α-TCP based AC.

The objective of this study was to fabricate a type of bone cement that could fully transform to carbonate apatite (CO3Ap) in physiological conditions. A combination of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous was chosen as the powder phase and mixed with one of three kinds of sodium phosphate solutions: NaH2PO4, Na2HPO4, or Na3PO4. The cement that fully transformed to CO3Ap was fabricated using vaterite, instead of calcite, as a CaCO3 source. Their stability in aqueous solutions was different, regardless of the type of sodium phosphate solution. Rate of transformation to CO3Ap in descending order was Na3PO4>Na2HPO4>NaH2PO4. Transformation rate could be affected by the pH of solution. Results of this study showed that it was advantageous to use vaterite to fabricate CO3Ap-forming cement.

Carbonate apatite (CO3Ap), fabricated by dissolution-precipitation reaction based on an appropriate precursor, is expected to be replaced by bone according to bone remodeling cycle. One of the precursor candidates is gypsum because it shows self-setting ability, which then enables it to be shaped and molded. The aim of this study, therefore, was to fabricate CO3Ap blocks from set gypsum. Set gypsum was immersed in a mixed solution of 0.4 mol/L disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4) and 0.4 mol/L sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) at 80-200°C for 6-48 h. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that CO3Ap block was fabricated by dissolution-precipitation reaction in Na2HPO4-NaHCO3 solution using set gypsum in 48 h when the temperature was 100°C or higher. Conversion rate to CO3Ap increased with treatment temperature. CO3Ap block containing a larger amount of carbonate was obtained when treated at lower temperature.

Spontaneous thoracic spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage is rare, and thus no useful radiological findings for preoperative diagnosis have been reported. We experienced a patient with spontaneous thoracic spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage. A 37-year-old female presented with sudden-onset paraplegia and numbness in the trunk and bilateral lower extremities. The patient had no past history of trauma, lumbar puncture and bleeding disorder. T2-weighted sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical and thoracic spines showed a mass occupied in the ventral space of spinal cord that was dorsally shifted. The mass extended from C6 to Th6 levels, with its largest size at Th2 level. Thoracic spine T2-weighted sagittal and axial MRI showed that the mass compressed spinal cord and was located in the intradural space. There was no spinal cord tumor and no spinal vascular malformation around the mass. Brain computed tomography (CT) showed a high-density area in the subarachnoid space, indicating the possibility of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Brain MRI showed no ruptured aneurysm. The patient was diagnosed as a spontaneous thoracic spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage and emergency surgery was selected. We performed right-side hemilaminectomy at Th1-Th6 and opened dura mater and arachnoid membrane. Hematoma was found in the ventral space of spinal cord and was removed. One year after surgery, numbness in the trunk and bilateral lower extremities had disappeared but paraplegia remained unchanged. Thoracic spine T2-weighted MRI confirmed no hematoma but showed a newly formed intradural cyst. Preoperative combination of brain CT and thoracic MRI is useful to diagnose thoracic spinal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

A sequential retro-ene arylation reaction has been developed for the conversion of N-alkoxyenamides to the corresponding tert-alkylamines in good yields via the nucleophilic addition of a triarylaluminum reagent to an in situ generated N-acylketimine. The reaction is tolerant of a range of functional groups and provides facile access to a series of tert-alkylamines that would be otherwise difficult to access using conventional procedures.

The effect of the solubility of the precursors, alpha tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) and beta tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) on the mechanical strength of hydroxyapatite (HAp) bone substitute was investigated. Uniaxially pressed block starting from these precursors were treated hydrothermally with 1 mol/L of ammonia solution at 200°C for various durations. XRD analysis revealed that α-TCP block took 3 h whereas β-TCP block took 240 h for complete transformation to HAp. The porosity of HAp obtained from β-TCP block was found to be lower than that of HAp from α-TCP block. Diametral tensile strength of HAp from β-TCP block showed a significantly higher value than that of HAp from α-TCP block. It is therefore concluded that solubility of precursor affects the mechanical strength of the HAp block.

Sr-containing carbonate apatite (SrCAp) specimens of varied Sr contents, ranging from 0 to 13.3 mol%, were prepared through a phosphate treatment of set gypsum-and-carbonate mixture at 100°C for 7 days. Effects of Sr content in SrCAp on microstructure, osteoblast-like cell (MC3T3-E1) attachment and proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were evaluated. Sr(2+) ion substituted Ca(2+) ion in the apatite lattice. Carbonate content was about 9-13.6 wt%, increasing in content level as Sr content increased. Sr addition benefited cell attachment but had no significant influence on cell proliferation, although the latter was inhibited at the highest Sr content. ALP activity reached a peak in specimen containing 3.4 mol% of Sr. The present study revealed that SrCAp is a promising candidate for use as a bone substitute material with good resorbabilty and osteoconductivity.

Effects of carbonation temperature and compacting pressure on basic properties of calcite block were studied using Ca(OH)2 compact made with 0.2-2.0 MPa and their carbonation at 200-800ºC for 1 h. Microporous calcite was obtained only when carbonated at 600ºC using Ca(OH)2 compact made with 0.2 MPa even though thermogravimetry analysis showed that calcite powder was stable up to 920ºC under CO2 atmosphere. CaO formed by carbonation at 700ºC and 800ºC is thought to be caused by the limited CO2 diffusion interior to the Ca(OH)2 compact. Also, unreacted Ca(OH)2 was found for Ca(OH)2 compact prepared with 0.5 MPa or higher pressure even when carbonated at 600ºC. As a result of high temperature carbonation, crystallite size of the calcite, 58.0 nm, was significantly larger when compared to that of calcite prepared at room temperature, 35.5 nm. Porosity and diametral tensile strength of the microporous calcite were 39.5% and 6.4 MPa.

Spherical carbonate apatite (CO3Ap) microspheres approximately 1 mm in diameter were fabricated by granulation of calcium hydroxide around a core followed by carbonation and phosphatization through dissolution-precipitation reaction. CO3Ap microspheres with high uniformity could not be achieved without using a core. Solid CO3Ap microspheres were obtained using a calcite core whereas hollow CO3Ap microspheres were obtained using a NaCl core. The obtained microsphere was identified as B-type CO3Ap by Fourier transform infrared analysis and the carbonate content was approximately 7-8 wt% regardless of the type of core used for sample preparation. The mechanical strength of both the solid and hollow CO3Ap microspheres was sufficient for practical use as a bone substitute.

To understand the feasibility of calcium (Ca) modification of type 316L stainless steel (316L SS) surface using hydrothermal treatment, 316L SS plates were treated hydrothermally in calcium chloride (CaCl(2)) solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis revealed that the surface of 316L SS plate was modified with Ca after hydrothermal treatment at 200°C. And the immobilized Ca increased with CaCl(2) concentration. However no Ca-modification was occurred for 316L SS plates treated at 100°C. When Ca-modified 316L SS plate was immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) with ion concentrations nearly equal to those of human blood plasma, low crystalline apatite was precipitated on its surface whereas no precipitate was observed on non Ca-modified 316L SS. The results obtained in the present study indicated that hydrothermal treatment at 200°C in CaCl(2) solution is useful for Ca-modification of 316L SS, and Ca-modification plays important role for apatite precipitation in SBF.

Carbonate apatite (CO(3)Ap) foam may be an ideal bone substitute as it is sidelined to cancellous bone with respect to its chemical composition and structure. However, CO(3)Ap foam fabricated using α-tricalcium phosphate foam showed limited mechanical strength. In the present study, feasibility of the fabrication of calcite which could be a precursor of CO(3)Ap was studied. Calcite foam was successfully fabricated by the so-called "ceramic foam" method using calcium hydroxide coated polyurethane foam under CO(2)+O(2) atmosphere. Then the calcite foam was immersed in Na(2)HPO(4) aqueous solution for phase transformation based on dissolution-precipitation reaction. When CaO-free calcite foam was immersed in Na(2)HPO(4) solution, low-crystalline CO(3)Ap foam with 93-96% porosity and fully interconnected porous structure was fabricated. The compressive strength of the foam was 25.6 ± 6 kPa. In light of these results, we concluded that the properties of the precursor foam were key factors for the fabrication of CO(3)Ap foams.

Our previous study demonstrated that calcium-bonded titanium surface (Ca-Ti) can be obtained by hydrothermal reaction between titanium (Ti) and CaCl(2) and that bone-apatite like formation was observed after immersion in simulated body fluid. The purpose of the study was to determine the in vivo response to Ca-Ti surface using a rodent tibia model. Cylinders of commercially pure Ti were divided into three groups: (1) untreated group; (2) NaOH+hTi group: soaked in 5 mol/L NaOH solution at 60 degrees C then heated at 400 degrees C for 1 h; and (3) Ca-Ti group: hydrothermally treated in the presence of 10 mmol/L CaCl(2) at 200 degrees C for 24 h. The cylinders implanted in surgically created defects in tibias of 8-week old male Wistar rats were retrieved after 1, 2, and 4 weeks. Histomorphometric evaluations were made on stained decalcified thin sections. Results showed that at 1, 2, and 4 week after implantation, respectively, bone contact was 55.2 +/- 16.4%, 88.1 +/- 9.9%, and 96.1 +/- 4.8% for Ca-Ti implants, 5.7 +/- 5.3%, 19.9 +/- 1.2%, 57.4 +/- 4.8% for untreated; and 27.2 +/- 0.7%, 70.9 +/- 7.7%, and 96.0 +/- 5.1% for NaOH+hTi implants. These results suggest that hydrothermal treatment with CaCl(2) provides a bioactive Ca-Ti bonded surface that allows bone formation greater than that obtained with NaOH+heat treated Ti surfaces., (Copyright 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, we investigated a novel method for fabrication of carbonate apatite block without ionic movement between precursor and solution by using precursor that includes all constituent ions of carbonate apatite. A powder mixture prepared from dicalcium phosphate anhydrous and calcite at appropriate Ca/P ratios (1.5, 1.67, and 1.8) was used as starting material. For preparation of specimens, the slurry made from the powder mixture and distilled water was packed in a split stainless steel mold and heat - treated, ranging from 60 degrees C to 100 degrees C up to 48 hours at 100% humidity. It appeared that carbonate apatite could be obtained above 70 degrees C and monophasic carbonate apatite could be obtained from the powder mixture at Ca/P ratio of 1.67. Carbonate content of the specimen was about 5-7%. Diametral tensile strength of the carbonate apatite blocks slightly decreased with increasing treatment temperature. The decrease in diametral tensile strength is thought to be related to the crystal size of the carbonate apatite formed.

Effects of sintering temperature on the physical and compositional properties of alpha-TCP foam fabricated using the polyurethane foam method were examined. When a polyurethane foam coated with alpha-TCP slurry was sintered at 1,400-1,550 degrees C, alpha-TCP foam having basically the same fully interconnected porous structure was produced although shrinkage occurred with increasing sintering temperature. On porosity of the alpha-TCP foam, a higher foam porosity of 95% was obtained when sintered at 1,400 degrees C as compared to the 90% porosity obtained at a higher sintering temperature of 1,550 degrees C. Further, at 1,500 degrees C or higher temperature, frame became dense with disappearance of micropores. On compressive strength, it increased from approximately 50 to 250 kPa when sintering temperature was increased from 1,400 to 1,550 degrees C. Nonetheless, no compositional changes were observed even when the alpha-TCP foam was cooled in the furnace without quenching process. In light of the results obtained, it was concluded that alpha-TCP foam fabricated using the polyurethane method was useful as a bone substitute and/or scaffolding material for tissue engineering. Besides, alpha-TCP foam could be useful as a precursor for the fabrication of other calcium phosphate foams.

Apatite cement containing porogen can be a useful material for the fabrication of biporous (macro- and microporous) apatite, which has gained much attention as a bone substitute material because of its large surface area and that it improves cell penetration. In the present study, the effects of added mannitol on the setting reaction and mechanical strength of apatite cement were evaluated. Apatite cements containing 0-40 wt% of mannitol were prepared and allowed to set in 0.9% saline kept at 37 degrees C for 1-7 days. Although the diametral tensile strength (DTS) value increased with time, it decreased with the amount of added mannitol. SEM observation and XRD analysis revealed that mannitol had no inhibitory effect on the transformation reaction of apatite cement to apatite. It was thus concluded that mannitol was a good candidate for the fabrication of biporous apatite because it is biocompatible, exhibits satisfactory dissolution behavior, and that it caused no inhibitory effects on the compositional transformation to apatitic material.

Transformation of gypsum model fabricated by three-dimensional printing (3DP) into hydroxyapatite (HA) by treating in ammonium phosphate solution is possible. However, 3DP powder supplied by the manufacturer contains unknown additives which may be questionable for biomaterials. Accordingly, pure plaster of Paris (POP) powder was used for fabrication in the present study. For accurate fabrication, reduction of supplied binder ink to 80% of standard amount for 3DP powder supplied by the manufacturer was found to be the optimal condition for POP fabrication. Transformation from POP to HA was done by immersing into 1 mol/L ammonium phosphate solution. However, preheating of fabricated POP specimen at 200 degrees C for 30 min to change from calcium sulfate dihydrate into calcium sulfate hemihydrate could accelerate the transformation into HA effectively. To increase compressive strength, HA transformed specimen was sintering at 1150 degrees C for 3 h. The compressive strength increased four times comparing with as transformed HA specimen. However, crystal structure was transformed to beta-TCP due to the chemical reaction between the transformed HA and remained phosphate from ammonium phosphate solution at the sintering temperature. A sophisticated application of the present 3DP method to fabricate the freeform bioceramic for osseous defect was attempted, and jaw bone defect filling biomaterial of beta-TCP and scaffold with macroporous structures could be fabricated. Present 3DP method has possibility to fabricate freeform bioceramic for osseous defect or scaffold.

Low-crystallinity hydroxyapatite (HAP) foam is an ideal material for bone substitutes and scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration, because its interconnected pores provide the space for cell growth and tissue penetration, and its composition induces excellent tissue response and good osteoconductivity. In this study, the feasibility of low-crystallinity HAP foam fabrication was evaluated based on the phase transformation reaction or the so-called dissolution-reprecipitation reaction of alpha-tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) foam granules. When alpha-TCP foam granules were placed in water at 37 degrees C for 1 day, no reaction was observed. However, alpha-TCP foam granules set to form low-crystallinity HAP by treating it hydrothermally at 200 degrees C. The network of fully interconnected pores was retained, and porosity was as high as 82%. Pore size ranged from 50 to 300 mum with an average pore size of 160 mum. Compressive strength was 207 kPa. Although no setting reaction was observed at 37 degrees C, the setting reaction caused by the hydrothermal treatment of alpha-TCP foam granules allowed the fabrication of any shape of low-crystallinity HAP. Background: Yusho an intoxication caused by oral dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls occurred in 1968. Patients suffered from various systemic symptoms, including general fatigue, nausea, muscular and articular pain, acneform eruptions, black comedones, cutaneous and oral pigmentation, and increased eye discharge. The major causative factor was the contamination of rice oil with 2,3,4,7,8-penta-chlorodibenzofuran (PeCDF). Recent technical advances have allowed us to measure blood levels of PeCDF. However, there is little information on which symptoms and laboratory data are directly associated with PeCDF levels., Methods: Yusho patients underwent annual medical check-ups from 2001 to 2003. Blood PeCDF levels were correlated with the presence or absence of symptoms in medical, hematological, dermatological, dental and ophthalmological examinations. This study analyzed all combinations by using the association analysis. This is the most suitable method to evaluate all combinations of the data comprehensively. This method was used to determine the rate of patients with high PeCDF level in the population with each symptom, and to extract combinations of three symptoms which were strongly associated with high PeCDF level., Results and Conclusion: The rate of the patients with high PeCDF level was high in populations with high uric acid, black comedones (face), second highest quartile of age, or high urea nitrogen. The combination of three symptoms associated with the highest rate of patients with high PeCDF level was "high uric acid, female sexuality, and history of acneform eruptions", followed by "history of Yusho in and after 1968, high cholesterol level, and subjective symptoms." This analysis newly suggested that PeCDF concentration may be associated with history of dermatological symptoms, high uric acid, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

The effect of temperature on crystallinity of carbonate apatite (CAp) foam prepared from alpha-tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) foam by hydrothermal treatment was investigated in the present study. The alpha-TCP foams were prepared through a conventional sintering method using polyurethane foam as template. Then, the resultant alpha-TCP foams were hydrothermally treated with Na2CO3 aqueous solution at 100 degrees C, 150 degrees C and 200 degrees C for 72 h. After hydrothermal treatment, the cancellous bone-like macroporous structure of the alpha-TCP foams was maintained. However, microscopic morphology of the foams' frame significantly changed after the 72 h treatment period. The smooth surface of alpha-TCP foam disappeared and the whole surface was covered with plate-like deposits. The plate-like deposits treated at 150 degrees C and 200 degrees C had smooth surface while those treated at 100 degrees C were constructed from spherical particles of approximately 200 nm in diameter. The results of X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared analysis showed that alpha-TCP was completely converted to CAp and the crystallinity of CAp prepared at 100 degrees C was significantly lower than those prepared at 150 degrees C and 200 degrees C. Hydrothermal treatment of alpha-TCP foam at 100 degrees C allowed the formation of low-crystalline CAp foam but complete conversion needs a longer treatment period.

Bone consists of a mineral phase (carbonate apatite) and an organic phase (principally collagen). Cancellous bone is characterized by interconnecting porosity necessary for tissue ingrowth and nourishment of bone cells. The purpose of the present study was to fabricate macroporous carbonate apatite (CAP) blocks with interconnecting porosity as potential bone substitute biomaterials by hydrothermal conversion of alpha-TCP foam in carbonate solution. The fabrication of the macroporous CAP was accomplished in two steps: (1) preparation of alpha-TCP foams using polyurethane foams as templates, and (2) hydrothermal conversion at 200 degrees C of alpha-TCP foam in the presence of ammonium carbonate solutions of different concentrations. The maximum carbonate content of the resultant CAP foam was approximately 7.4 wt %. The mean porosity of the CAP foam was as high as 93 vol %. The macroporous CAP blocks or granules prepared in this manner has properties similar to that of bone in mineral composition and in having interconnecting macroporosity necessary for osteoconductivity and tissue ingrowth. On the basis of composition and interconnecting macroporosity, the CAP foam materials could be ideal biomaterials for bone repair and as scaffolds for tissue engineering., (2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

B-type carbonate apatite (CO3Ap) block may be an ideal artificial bone substitute because it is closer in chemical composition to bone mineral. In the present study, the feasibility to fabricate CO3Ap blocks was investigated using compositional transformation, which was based on the dissolution-precipitation reaction of a gypsum-calcite composite with free-molding behavior. For the compositional change, or phosphorization, gypsum-calcite composites of varying CaCO3 contents were immersed in 1 mol/L (NH4)3PO4 aqueous solution at 100 degrees C for 24 hours. No macroscopic changes were found after the treatment, whereas microscopic change was observed at SEM level. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and CHN analysis indicated that the composites were B-type CO3Ap containing approximately 6-7 wt% of CO3, a value similar to that of biological bone apatite. Diametral tensile strength of the CO3Ap block was approximately 1-3 MPa. Based on the results obtained, it was therefore concluded that gypsum-calcite was a good candidate for the fabrication of CO3Ap blocks, coupled with the advantage that the composite can be molded to any shape by virtue of the setting property of gypsum.

Effects of liquid phase on the basic properties of alpha-tricalcuim phosphate (alpha-TCP)-based cement, BIOPEX, were investigated by employing three liquid phases: distilled water, neutral sodium hydrogen phosphate solution, and succinic acid disodium salt solution containing sodium salt of chondroitin sulfate. When mixed with neutral sodium hydrogen phosphate or succinic acid disodium salt solution, the initial setting times of the cement were 19.4 +/- 0.55 and 11.8 +/- 0.45 minutes respectively. These setting times were much shorter than that of distilled water, 88.4 +/- 0.55 minutes. Formation of needle-like crystals typical of apatite was much faster when neutral sodium hydrogen phosphate solution was used, as compared to distilled water or succinic acid disodium salt solution. Moreover, at 24 hours after mixing, the largest amount of apatite was formed when neutral sodium hydrogen phosphate solution was used, whereas use of succinic acid resulted in the least. On the final mechanical strength of the cement, that yielded with neutral sodium hydrogen phosphate solution was the highest. In contrast, lower mechanical strength was observed--especially at the initial stage--when succinic acid sodium salt was used. It was thus concluded that alpha-TCP-based cement allowed accelerated transformation to apatite, and that higher mechanical strength since the initial stage was achieved when neutral sodium hydrogen phosphate solution was used as the liquid phase.

We have reported that low-crystalline porous calcite block, which is useful as a bone substitute or a source material to prepare apatite-type bone fillers could be fabricated by exposing calcium hydroxide compact to carbon dioxide gas saturated with water vapor. In the present study, we investigated the effect of molding pressure on the transformation of calcium hydroxide into calcite and the mechanical strength of the carbonated compact. Transformation into calcite was almost completed within 72 h, however, a small amount of Ca(OH)(2) still remained unreacted at higher molding pressure because of incomplete penetration of CO(2) gas into the interparticle space due to dense packing of Ca(OH)(2) particles. On the other hand, high molding pressure resulted in an increase in diametral tensile strength (DTS) of the calcite compact formed. Critical porosity of the calcite block was calculated as approximately 68%.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)) has been widely used as a bone substitute material because of its excellent tissue response and good resorbability. In this experimental study, we propose a new method obtaining porous CaCO(3) monolith for an artificial bone substitute. In the method, calcium hydroxide compacts were exposed to carbon dioxide saturated with water vapor at room temperature. Carbonation completed within 3 days and calcite was the only product. The mechanical strength of CaCO(3) monolith increased with carbonation period and molding pressure. Development of mechanical strength proceeded through two steps; the first rapid increase by bonding with calcite layer formed at the surface of calcium hydroxide particles and the latter increase by the full conversion of calcium hydroxide to calcite. The latter process was thought to be controlled by the diffusion of CO(2) through micropores in the surface calcite layer. Porosity of calcite blocks thus prepared had 36.8-48.1% depending on molding pressure between 1 MPa and 5 MPa. We concluded that the present method may be useful for the preparation of bone substitutes or the preparation of source material for bone substitutes since this method succeeded in fabricating a low-crystalline, and thus a highly reactive, porous calcite block.

Objective: To test the hypothesis, derived from a previous short-term (7-day) assessment, that the absence of conventional pulp protection is not responsible for long-term pulp complications of composite resin restorations with self-etching adhesives., Methods: All 150 patients who received the restorations with self-etching adhesives were recalled at least 2 years after the placement of restorations. Of the 47 patients (31%) who responded, 106 restorations aged from 2.2 to 6.5 years were examined for tooth sensitivity and pulp vitality regarding long-term pulp complications. The results were subjected to a multivariable logistic regression analysis with regard to cavity depth, provision of conventional pulp protection and short-term pulp complications., Results: No positive cases were found in the assessment of tooth sensitivity. Four restorations (3.7%) made in deep cavities with conventional pulp protection resulted in pulpectomy due to inflammation, of which three cases presented short-term pulp complications. The 95% confidence intervals for the odds ratios estimated by the multivariable logistic regression analysis were (1.54, infinity) for cavity depth (1.50, infinity) for short-term pulp complications and (0.02, infinity) for conventional pulp protection. Namely, the last variable had no significant effect on long-term pulp complications and thus the hypothesis was verified., Conclusions: The absence of conventional pulp protection was not responsible for long-term pulp complications even in deep cavities with the use of self-etching adhesives. A deep cavity and the existence of short-term pulp complications were two critical predictors for the occurrence of long-term pulp complications.

Effects of added alpha-tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) and beta-TCP were investigated to shed light on the setting reaction of apatite cement (AC) consisting of tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous8 (DCPA). Added beta-TCP showed no reactivity, and thus resulted in extended setting time and decreased mechanical strength. In contrast, alpha-TCP dissolved to supply calcium and phosphate ions after initial apatite crystal formation by the reaction of TTCP and DCPA. Although setting time was delayed because alpha-TCP was involved only in the latter reaction of apatite cement, larger apatite crystals were formed due to its addition. As a result of larger apatite crystal formation, the mechanical strength of alpha-TCP-added apatite cement increased by approximately 30%, as compared to alpha-TCP-free apatite cement.

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a CAD/CAM built-up using ink-jet printing technique. Commercially available 3DP system can form only gypsum model and not for bioceramics. On the other hand, transformation of hardened gypsum into hydroxyapatite (HA) by treatment in ammonium phosphate solution was found lately. In the present study, transformation of the 3DP gypsum block to HA was attempted. However, the fabricated 3DP block was soluble in water. To insolubilize, it was heated at 300 degrees C for 10 min, and then, gypsum was transformed to calcium sulfate hemihydrate, CaSO(4) x 0.5H(2)O. The 3D block was immersed in 1M (NH(4))(3)PO(4) x 3H(2)O solution at 80 degrees C for 1-24 h, and the transformation into HA within 4 h was ascertained. A heat-treated plaster of Paris (POP) block was also investigated for comparison. The unheated POP block consisting of gypsum dihydrate took 24 h to complete the transformation, while the heat-treated POP consisting calcium sulfate hemihydrate promoted the transformation into HA; but the transformed thickness in the block was less than the 3DP block. This is probably due to higher solubility of the hemihydrate than gypsum dihydrate. Accelerated transformation of the 3DP block was also caused by its porous structure, which enabled an easy penetration of the phosphate solution. With the present method, it is possible to transform the fabricated gypsum by 3D printing that is adaptive to the osseous defect into HA prostheses or scaffold., ((c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

In diagnosing diseases in clinical practice, a combination of three clinical findings is often used to represent each disease. This is largely because it is often difficult or impractical to assess for all possible combinations of symptoms and abnormal exam findings that occur in any particular disease. For most diseases, diagnostic triads are based on empirical observations. In this study, we determined diagnostic triads for chronic diseases using data mining procedures. We also verified the combinations' validity as well as our procedure for determining them. We used symptoms and examination findings from 477 patients with chronic diseases, collected as part of a 35-year longitudinal study begun in 1968. For each patient there were 295 items from examinations in internal medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, dentistry and blood tests. We judged each item to be either normal or abnormal, and restricted the analysis to the abnormal findings. To analyze such an exhaustive assortment, we used the data mining technique of association analysis. The analysis generated three clinical findings for each disease. Diseases were defined based on blood tests. Searching through all 295 items to find the three most useful clinical findings would be impractical on a commodity PC. However, by excluding normal items, we were able to sufficiently reduce the total number of combinations so as to make combinatorial analysis on a PC feasible. In addition to more accurate diagnoses, we believe our technique can identify those diagnostic data that are more cost effective in terms of time and other resources required for their collection.

Objectives: The main objective is the characterisation of the setting reaction in glass ionomer cements based on experimental ionomer glasses with different fluorine content and a commercial glass ionomer cement liquid by using 13C CP/MAS-NMR, 29Si, 27Al and 31P MAS-NMR spectroscopy in order to receive information specifically about the cross-linking process., Methods: Different fluorine containing glass compositions based on 4.5SiO2-3Al2O3-1.5P2O5-(5-z)CaO-zCaF(2) where z=0-3, were mixed with a commercially available polymer liquid to form glass ionomer cements. The cements were subjected to 27Al, 13C CP/MAS, 29Si, and 31P MAS-NMR analysis., Results: The 27Al spectra showed clearly the formation of six-fold coordinate Al(VI), that may crosslink the carboxyl groups in the poly-acid molecules. A shift towards to more positive values of the carboxyl peak in the 13C CP/MAS-NMR spectra showed clearly the proton dissociation of the carboxyl groups. A shift towards more negative values was observed in the 29Si MAS-NMR spectra, suggesting formation of hydrated silica gel and consequently formation of additional Si-O-Si bonds. 31P MAS-NMR spectra also reflected changes in the coordination state around a PO4(3-) tetrahedron. Increasing the fluorine content of the glasses resulted generally in increased reactivity during setting, due to promoting cross-linking and repolymerisation of the silicate phase, followed by clear changes in the MAS-NMR spectra., Conclusions: The cross-linking process during the setting reaction of glass ionomer cements can be followed by MAS-NMR spectroscopy observing the conversion of Al(IV) to Al(VI). The acid base setting reaction is completed in 1 day and no further significant changes in the MAS-NMR spectra can be observed. Further study is required in order to understand the role of phosphorus.

Biporous (macro- and microporous) calcium phosphate gains much attention as a bone substitute material because of its large surface area and that it improves cell penetration. In the present study, we evaluated the feasibility of biporous, low-crystalline apatite based on dissolution of mannitol from self-setting apatite cement (Biopex). Mannitol--known as a biocompatible, easily dissolved monosaccharide alcohol--was recrystallized to obtain larger crystals. It was crushed with pestle and mortar, sieved to obtain crystals which passed through a 500-microm mesh but which remained against a 300-microm mesh, and then used as porogen. Although Biopex containing 60 wt% mannitol was not able to be taken out of the mold, addition of mannitol caused no initial setting inhibition to Biopex if the amount was 40 wt% or less. Similarly, transformation to apatitic product was confirmed when the apatite cement was immersed in 0.9% saline kept at 37 degrees C for seven days. The set mass became low-crystalline, biporous apatite with approximately 60% porosity.

Porous hydroxyapatite (HAP) foam permits three-dimensional (3D) structure with fully interconnecting pores as well as excellent tissue response and good osteoconductivity. It is therefore thought to be a good candidate as scaffold material for bone regeneration and as a synthetic bone substitute material. To fabricate better porous HAP foam, improved physical and structural properties as well as higher osteoconductivity are desired. In the present study, the effects of sintering temperature on the physical and compositional properties of porous HAP foam were evaluated by employing high sintering temperature starting at 1,300 degrees C up to 1,550 degrees C. The mechanical strength of porous HAP foam increased with sintering temperature to reach the maximum value at 1,525 degrees C, then decreased slightly when sintering temperature was further increased to 1,550 degrees C. Alpha tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) was formed, and thus the porous HAP foam became biphasic calcium phosphate. Biphasic calcium phosphate consisting of both alpha-TCP and HAP had been reported to show higher osteoconductivity than HAP alone. We therefore recommend 1,500-1,550 degrees C as the sintering temperature for porous HAP foam since this condition provided the most desirable physical properties with biphasic calcium phosphate composition.

The corrosion behaviors of Ti, Ti-6Al-7Nb and Ti-6Al-4V alloys, and an experimentally produced Ti-0.5Pt alloy in 0.05% to 2.0% concentrations of Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride (APF) solutions (corresponding to 226 to 9,050 ppm fluoride at pH 3.5 or 3.6) were examined. While the corrosion of Ti, Ti-6Al-7Nb and Ti-6Al-4V alloys might occur easily even in a diluted 0.05% APF solution, dissolution of Ti from the Ti-0.5Pt alloy was observed only in test solutions with APF concentration exceeding 0.2%. When Ti-6Al-7Nb and Ti-6Al-4V alloys were immersed in 2.0% APF solution, their surfaces were entirely covered by compact corrosion products of Na3TiF6 due to severe corrosion. As a result, Ti dissolution was prevented and the amount of Ti dissolved decreased. However, since Ti was covered by porous, large-sized corrosion products of Na3TiF6 and that Ti-0.5Pt alloy was not covered with any corrosion product, the amount of Ti dissolved increased in the 2.0% APF solution.

This study introduces an objective method for identifying limited types of medical complication cases based only on Hospital Information System (HIS) data. To identify medical complication cases, we established an identifying rule, prepared HIS data, and applied the rule to the data. We identified 3 shock cases with intravenous application of contrast media at CT examination by using only one year (2003/4/1 to 2004/3/31) of HIS data from The University of Tokyo Hospital.

Fibrous dysplasia is a condition in which normal skeletal bone changes into fibroblastic stroma and immature bone. We report our experience of a unilateral external fixator applied for the treatment of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia arising in the elbow. The patient was a 38 year-old man. His main complaint was left elbow pain and a mass, which increased in size. The histological diagnosis from the needle biopsy was fibrous dysplasia. An articulated unilateral external fixator was used for immobilization. The lesions in the left distal humerus and proximal ulna were curetted and cancellous bone was packed into the cavity. An external fixator (Elbow Fixator, Orthofix Inc., McKinney, USA) was applied from the proximal humeral shaft to the distal ulnar shaft for postoperative tentative immobilization and preservation of the affected elbow joint movement. At two years after the operation, the range of motion of the affected elbow was 90 degrees in flexion and -35 degrees in extension. The range of motion in pronation and supination of the left forearm was normal. No evidence of recurrence was noted at two years after surgery. The merits of using an external fixator were: an earlier start of range of motion exercises, and a decrease in the risk of tumor dissemination.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of fabricating low-crystalline, porous apatite block using set gypsum as a precursor based on the fact that apatite is thermodynamically more stable than gypsum. When the set gypsum was immersed in 1 mol/L diammonium hydrogen phosphate aqueous solution at 100 degrees C, it transformed to low-crystalline porous apatite retaining its original shape. The transformation reaction caused a release of sulfate ions due to an ion exchange with phosphate ions, thus leading to a decrease in the pH of the solution. Then, due to decreased pH, dicalcium phosphate anhydrous--which has similar thermodynamic stability at lower pH--was also produced as a by-product. Apatite formed in the present method was low-crystalline, porous B-type carbonate apatite that contained approximately 0.5 wt% CO3, even though no carbonate sources--except carbon dioxide from air--were added to the reaction system. We concluded therefore that this is a useful bone filler fabrication method since B-type carbonate apatite is the biological apatite contained in bone.

In order to obtain early and good osteointegration after implantation of a titanium implant in the human body, the surface modified treatments using NaOH or H(2)O(2) etc. were reported. In this study, titanium was hydrothermally treated with CaCl(2) solutions at 200 degrees C for 24hr (CaCl(2)-HT). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation clearly showed apatite deposition on the surface of CaCl(2) HT treated titanium faster than other chemical treated titanium immersion in simulated body fluid. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis demonstrated that Ti--O--Ca bonding was formed on titanium surface by hydrothermal treatment with CaCl(2) solution. And it was revealed that thickness of TiO(2), which was known to play important roles for the formation of bone-like apatite, became approximately three times thicker than as-polished titanium. The amount of initial attached MC3T3-E1 cells on as-polished and NaOH, H(2)O(2) and this CaCl(2) HT treated titanium were almost the same values. After 5 days incubation, the growth rate of MC3T3-E1 cells on CaCl(2)-HT treated titanium was significantly higher than that on other chemical treated titanium. The hydrothermal treatment with 10-20 mmol/L CaCl(2) solution at 200 degrees C was an effective method for the fabrication of titanium implant with good bioactivity and osteoconductivity.

EFA6C is a third member of the EFA6 family of guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) for ADP-ribosylation factor 6 (ARF6). In this study, we first demonstrated that EFA6C indeed activated ARF6 more selectively than ARF1 by ARF pull-down assay. In situ hybridization histochemistry revealed that EFA6C mRNA was expressed predominantly in mature Purkinje cells and the epithelial cells of the choroid plexus in contrast to the ubiquitous expression of ARF6 mRNA throughout the brain. EFA6C mRNA was already detectable in the Purkinje cells at embryonic day 13, increased progressively during post-natal development and peaked during post-natal second week. In Purkinje cells, the immunoreactivity for EFA6C was localized particularly in the post-synaptic density as well as the plasma membranes of the cell somata, dendritic shafts and spines, while the immunoreactivity in their axon terminals in the deep cerebellar nuclei was very faint. These findings suggest that EFA6C may be involved in the regulation of the membrane dynamics of the somatodendritic compartments of Purkinje cells through the activation of ARF6.

In this study, we examined the corrosion behaviors of pure titanium, the alloys Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb, and the new experimental alloys Ti-Pt and Ti-Pd using anodic polarization and corrosion potential measurements in an environment containing fluoride. Before and after immersion in the test solutions, we made observations using a scanning electron microscope. The test solutions included an artificial saliva containing 0.2% NaF (corresponding to 905 ppm F) and an artificial saliva with a low concentration of oxygen. Although the surfaces of the Ti-Pt and Ti-Pd alloys were not affected by an acidic environment containing fluoride, the surfaces of the pure titanium, the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy were markedly roughened by corrosion. The surfaces of the pure titanium, the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy were microscopically damaged by corrosion when they were immersed in the solution containing a low concentration of dissolved oxygen, even with a fluoride concentration included in the commercial dentifrices. In this situation, however, the surfaces of the new Ti-Pt and Ti-Pd alloys were not affected. These alloys are expected to be of use in dental work as new titanium alloys with high corrosion resistances.

A metastatic ball tumor in the right atrium originating from esophageal cancer is extremely rare. A 53-year-old woman had two such tumors without any other types of metastasis. These tumors were associated with severe thrombocytopenia caused by the consumption of platelets. Even after repeated transfusions of platelets and fresh frozen plasma, the thrombocytopenia could not be controlled. Therefore, a surgical resection was performed to improve the thrombocytopenia and avoid sudden death due to a complete obstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract by the tumor. As the throm-bocytopenia did not recur postoperatively, the patient was discharged from hospital. She died, however, of multiple metastases with bilateral pleural effusions 5 months after the surgery.

Effects of added sodium alginate on the mechanical strength of Biopex, one type of apatite cement, were investigated since sodium alginate addition is very effective for Biopex to acquire anti-washout property. Addition of sodium alginate into the liquid phase of Biopex resulted in a slower transformation to apatitic monolith. As a result, mechanical strength of set Biopex in terms of diametral tensile strength (DTS) decreased when it was hardened in an incubator kept at 37 degrees C and 100% relative humidity for 7 days. However, DTS value increased with increase in the amount of added sodium alginate when the Biopex paste was immersed in 0.9% saline at 37 degrees C for 7 days. Set Biopex with less sodium alginate also showed larger porosity. Based on these findings, we concluded that added sodium alginate was effective in increasing the mechanical strength of Biopex by inhibiting liquid penetration into its paste when it is exposed to body fluids.
